LEAVE ONLY YOUR

footprints How to be an Eco Tourist

G

reen is the new black for holidays, with people seeking richer, authentic experiences which are beneficial for communities, and good for the planet, too. We understand that traveling isn’t the most environmentally-conscious of activities, but there’s no need to extinguish your passion for discovering new destinations. By making small conscious decisions, we can all play our part in protecting the future of the planet, backpack and all. A few changes in our traveling habits can have a huge impact on the health of our environment while reducing our carbon footprint.

Ecotourism encompasses nature-based activities that increase visitor appreciation and understanding of natural and cultural values.

WHY CHOOSE ECOTOURISM? From the Daintree Rainforest to the Undara Lava Tubes, Byron Bay’s beaches to the Great Barrier Reef; most of what we seek to explore in Australia is dependent on its natural beauty and pristine environment. These aesthetically pleasing environments are what attract visitors every day, but this makes them especially susceptible to the impact of tourism on its preservation. To preserve these incredible places for the future, we rely on tourists as well as local communities to play their part in looking after the ecosystems. Seek to minimise your carbon footprint as you travel, be choosing consciously when booking accommodation and tours. Seek to experience authentic and educational tours which provide opportunities to support local communities, indigenous culture and which actively protect the environment they operate in. Ecotourism opportunities often provide more enriching experiences from locals who are passionate about protecting the environment they love. Of course, the point of a holiday is to have a good time. But if it's guilt-free and great for the environment as well, it is even better.

7 EASY TIPS ON HOW TO BE AN ECO TOURIST WHAT IS ECOTOURISM? Ecotourism Australia defines Ecotourism as “ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation”.

16

Reduce plastic This seems an obvious choice, but there are many, many ways you can consciously do this when you travel. Take reusable material bags with you shopping – not just the grocery store, but when you shop for clothing and souvenirs

too. Avoid the cute mini condiments at breakfast and don’t use the mini bottles of shampoo in the hotel. Take your own shampoo and conditioner in refillable bottles. You’ll end up using a nicer product anyway. Take your own refillable water bottles, refuse straws in restaurants, take reusable coffee cups and dine-in more often rather than opting for takeaway.

Skip the room service Do you really need your sheets and towels laundered daily? You wouldn’t do this at home, so it seems almost ridiculous that we become accustomed to this on holiday. Another consideration is spending more time in one place rather than hotel-jumping from place to place. You’ll get to know the neighbourhood and culture better, often offering a more enriching and authentic experience.

Offset your travel This is often as easy as ticking a box when you book flights and other forms of travel. Simple. If you want to do more, consider planting a tree or donating to a tree-planting organisation each time you jet set.

Ditch disposables Did you know that around 40 billion disposable chopsticks are thrown away in China each year alone? While eating with chopsticks in Asia adds to the experience, consider purchasing a quality set of reusable chopsticks as a souvenir. Pop them in your bag and use them each time you crave a bowl of noodles.

Walk instead of drive Taxis are tempting, and tour busses make sightseeing seem easy, but think of how many hidden gems you are missing sitting on your butt. Often, better experiences can be had by walking the streets rather than covering a larger area in a vehicle. Most cities offer free walking tours too. When you do need to travel across town, opt for public transport, it’s lighter on your wallet too.

Pick up some rubbish Sure, it’s not your job. But the simple act of picking up litter can benefit the environment greatly. If you need added motivation, think of it as potentially saving the life of an animal or marine creature.

Flick the switch Remember to turn off all electricity in your accommodation before leaving. Never have the door open with aircon on and use aircon as little as possible. Yes, Australia can get very hot! And you should be comfortable, but when you minimise the use of aircon you’ll acclimatise better and enjoy your time outside more.

Thanks for keeping Australia beautiful!

THE COAST OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES Awash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities, a rugged hinterland and hundreds of annual sunshine hours, the East Coast is where Australia shines. Once you venture out of the capital cities and hit the highway for an epic road trip, lesser-known treasures arise in many of the smaller shires.

DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW?

Located just north of Bundaberg, 1770 is the only town in the world which has a number for a name! Lieutenant James Cook made the first landfall by a European on what was to become the Discovery Coast, and the birthplace of Queensland, on May 24, 1770. From the town of 1770 discover Lady Musgrave Island, an island cay with an internal lagoon, unique to the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and the iconic Heart Reef. The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle, a blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene. South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

DID YOU KNOW? Queensland is home to five of Australia’s 11 World Natural Heritage areas. These include the Scenic Rim National Parks, Fraser Island, Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the Wet Tropics (including Daintree National Park), and one of the great natural Wonders of the World; the Great Barrier Reef. A fascinating place of exceptional beauty, Fraser Island is 120km in length. It contains more than 100 freshwater lakes all ringed by sand, and the surrounding rainforest is the only rainforest in the world which grows on highelevation sand dunes! Visit famous 75-mile beach, see migratory humpback whales during the winter months and view native dingoes on the beach.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation. With so much to see and do, Australia’s East Coast is a land of possibility. It’s your time to shine!

Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique duck-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River. Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays. Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770, when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship. For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Soar above the island in the Red Baron; the only two-passenger, open cockpit biplane on floats, in the world. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts. The exotic rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled inbetween these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above the lush rainforest canopy. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be more than 135 million years old.

DID YOU KNOW? Byron Bay is Australia’s most easterly point, the first place on the mainland to see the sun rise. A surf haven for wave riders, Byron Bay has earned its reputation as a world-class surf destination. But if you’ve never picked up a board before, never fear, Byron Bay still provides a veritable feast of attractions; from music festivals and art studios to markets, organic food, cultural tours and natural beauty. While it still retains an alternative vibe and laid-back atmosphere, Byron Bay is a destination for discerning travellers wishing to explore its stretches of pristine coastline, hinterland waterfalls and rainforest retreats. MUST DO: Once a hippie community hidden in the rainforest, Nimbin provides an insight into the alternative lifestyle that embodies the Byron shire today. The village is as intriguing as it is quirky, with a fascinating mural streetscape of indigenous, rainforest and psychedelic facades. Continue your journey north across the border into Queensland, where the beer is cold and the sun is hot.

Magical Mission Beach Stop and soak up the serenity of one of Australia’s most tranquil tropical destinations. As the halfway point in-between Townsville and Cairns, take the opportunity to meander barefoot along one of Mission Beach’s pristine shorelines, where the rainforest fringes the glimmering turquoise tide. Sound’s magical? This is only the start of why Mission Beach should be on your travel itinerary. Mission Beach is one of the few places along the Queensland coast where two World Heritage areas meet, the Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. This stretch of paradise is also one of the closest mainland destinations to the Great Barrier Reef, only 38km away. Visitors wanting a unique diving or snorkelling experience are in luck, as it only takes an hour to reach some of the reef’s most beautiful and unique coral, meaning more time in the water viewing nature at its finest and less time on a boat. 14km of tropical sandy beaches line the four rustic villages which collectively make up Mission Beach. The villages of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach each add their own unique vibe to this relaxed community. The village of Mission Beach is a great place to start your holiday. Stroll the eclectic array of gift stores and art galleries, then familiarize yourself with some of the town’s popular eateries, from cafes to bars and gourmet restaurants. Don’t let the relaxed ambience and casual way of life fool you, hiding among the villages are some of the best seafood delicacies and resort luxuries on the Queensland coast. Alongside breathtaking scenery, Mission Beach is home to unique and endangered wildlife. The Southern Cassowary is one of the most extraordinary looking large birds in the world, and the rainforest surrounding Mission Beach is where the majority of them reside. If you’re lucky, you may see one walking through bush or even through the grounds of your accommodation, though weighing on average 60kg, it’s advisable never to approach them.

This breathtaking experience is only the start of what will imprint lifelong memories. Following are two action-filled days of beautiful snorkel and dive locations onboard one of the only boats of divers cruising around an expanse of World Heritage reefs. Your experience is topped off by the opportunity to dive what was voted as the world’s best wreck dive, the SS Yongala. Sleep the reef, dive the reef, live the reef. This is an epic adventure unlike any other.

What does the 3 day / 3 night liveaboard cruise include? Everything you need for the experience of a lifetime is included in the price. The liveaboard cabins are spread over three decks. There are shared bathroom facilities onboard with the luxury of hot water. There is even a social area on the top deck where guests and the crew gather for meals, barbecues, entertainment and relaxing in-between dives. Cold and hot options are served for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Morning and afternoon tea is also provided each day. • Up to 10 Dives including two night-dives and two dives on the Yongala Wreck • Three night’s accommodation in airconditioned cabins • All bed linen • All meals • Environmental Management Charges and site mooring fees • Tanks and weights for divers • Snorkeling equipment for snorkelers

Is this adventure suitable for beginners? Yes, absolutely. First-time divers receive a theory lesson as well as gear training; such as breathing and equalizing techniques and pressure underwater. Beginners practice easy skills in shallow water to build confidence before diving in deeper water and dive in small groups of up to four students with an instructor. The first dive on each liveaboard trip is a safety-check dive where the experience of divers is ascertained, from certified beginners through to advanced divers. From there we choose the reef and dive sites visited based on the individual interests and needs of the divers as well as the weather. Most reefs reach the surface, which makes them accessible no matter the experience of the diver, or if people opt to snorkel only.

What makes the SS Yongala a worldclass dive site? Everything is big – big fish, big schools, big wreck. The Yongala was a luxury vessel making her way from Melbourne to Townville when in 1911 she sank during a cyclone with the loss of all 122 passengers and crew on board. The 110m hull and deck are completely intact. Protected by the Historic Shipwreck Act, altering or removing

artefacts is strictly prohibited. As a result, port holes, lights, bottles and toilets are still visible, providing for a fascinating dive. For the invertebrate enthusiast, the wreck is covered in hard and soft corals, anemones and a range of crustaceans and molluscs including giant murex, octopus and nudibranchs are often spotted. Witness Giant Bull Rays waking up and ‘flying’ over the top of the wreck, and, if you can tear your eyes away from the symphony of batfish, cod and giant trevally long enough, look out for the formidable resident Queensland gropers, bottle-nosed wedgefish and leopard sharks. An unrivalled open ocean location means lucky divers even have a chance to see migrating manta rays, whale sharks and humpback whales at certain times of the year. The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi). This is your best chance to visit the Central Section of the Great Barrier Reef, which has some of the best snorkel and dive sites.

To book, phone 07 4724 0600 or check out adrenalindive.com.au to view the dates of its scheduled 2018 liveaboard voyages.

AQUARIUM ANIMAL PROFILE: Species: Northern Wobbegong (Orectolobus wardi) Background: One-hundred and thirty three species of sharks and rays can be found on the Great Barrier Reef. Reef HQ Aquarium have increased their shark diversity with three northern wobbegongs. This trio squeeze into tight rock crevices, revealing only a glimpse of their intricate patterned body, which aids camouflage. Wobbegongs lay on the sea floor, unseen, whereby they ambush small fish to feed upon. These wobbegongs may be shy, but often seen snuggled together it seems they enjoy each other’s company. Species information: Northern wobbegongs are endemic to shallow water habitats in northern Australia; from the far northern region of the Great Barrier Reef, and along the Northern Territory coastline to Western Australia. They are a small species, reaching a maximum of 60cm in length. Unlike other sharks, wobbegongs have a compressed body and growths around their mouth, which is the inspiration for the name, wobbegong, believed to mean “shaggy beard” in an Australian Aboriginal language. Reef HQ Aquarium hope to increase scientific knowledge on this species, as currently very little is known about this cryptic, yet endearing, shark.

Wombats Cute, cuddly and native to Australia, the wombat is a timid marsupial not often seen in its natural habitat. In the wild, wombats are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the evening. But this isn’t the only reason they are rarely seen. Stout and muscular, wombats are born to dig. The talented tunnelers carve intricate burrows underground, ranging in length anywhere from three metres to 30, and can have multiple burrows. The main burrows are sometimes shared between wombats with one using each burrow at a time, with a sleeping chamber housing a nest made of grass and leaves. They have the distinction of being the world’s largest burrowing animal. For these reasons, wombats weren’t noticed by European settlers for at least 10 years after their arrival to Australia. A wombat can travel up to three kilometres during an evening in search of food, but will have other burrows near in case of danger. Shorter burrows are commonly used by wombats as escape tunnels when predators are nearby. DID YOU KNOW? The rump of a wombat is covered by a tough, thick skin. If threatened by a dingo, a wombat will dive into a nearby burrow, using its rump as protection from the teeth of the dingo. The wombat is also capable of crushing the dingo’s skull against the burrow roof. There are three species of wombat: the Common wombat or Bare-nosed wombat; the Southern Hairy-nosed wombat and the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat. DID YOU KNOW? Queensland’s only wombat, the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat, is critically endangered and one of Australia’s rarest marsupials. The species is only found in one location in the wild, the Epping Forest National Park, west of Clermont in Central Queensland. A 20km predator fence protects these wombats against dingoes.

Billabong Sanctuary

Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m.

At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. Wildlife and interpretive experiences feature all day. Don ‘t miss one of the most popular feeding shows, where giant crocodiles will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength eager to take the food offered to them. Hear the tremendous jaws snap shut as crocodiles are fed by our experienced rangers.

Billabong Sanctuary has on display, the Bare-nosed wombat and the Southern Hairy0nosed wombat. Two of the Billabong’s most loved animals are wombats Rueben and Wanda who come out twice a day for a pat and cuddle. Visitors have the opportunity to hold a wombat for a souvenir photo.

Snappy Tom, at 4 metres, is an impressive crocodile, while Bully, the largest crocodile at the Sanctuary is 4.5 metres long and weighs in excess of 750kgs. The most famous of the crocodiles at the Sanctuary is Jupiter caught on Townsville’s main beach The Strand in February 206. Jupiter is 4.3 metres long and weighs 500 kgs.

Due to their rarity, and the fact they are extremely hard to find in the wild, many visitors come to Billabong Sanctuary specifically to hold a wombat, as they are often a favourite out of all the marsupials.

At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you on many misconceptions people may have about different animals.

Wombats are marsupials because they carry their young in pouches the same way that kangaroos and koalas do. DID YOU KNOW? The female wombat’s pouch opens backward to prevent dirt entering while she is burrowing. Cute and cuddly, the wombat’s nearest relative is the koala. The koala and the wombat are Australia’s two most endearing animals, and at Billabong Sanctuary, visitors have the opportunity to hold and cuddle both. Feed a croc, cuddle a koala, pet a kangaroo and hold a wombat. Get up close and personal with your favourite native Australian animal, at Billabong Sanctuary

To see the crocodiles in action is an unforgettable nature experience.

See a different side to this magnificent animal, the dingo. The Sanctuary’s 3 dingoes are walked around the grounds daily between 11:30 and 12:30 where you can meet them and give them a pat or pose for a photo with a dingo following the dingo talk at 2:45pm Billabong Sanctuary is involved in captive breeding programmes for the endangered Southern cassowary and the threatened Greater bilby. You can view both of these species in displays that mimic their natural habitat Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Stay with Koalas on

Magnetic island

With 23 secluded bays and beaches to explore, hidden among the beauty of a National Park; Magnetic Island is a piece of paradise. It is one of only three community-based islands on the Great Barrier Reef, with 2,500 locals calling the island home. Making your stay even more memorable; Bungalow Bay Koala Village is Australia’s ONLY hostel offering the chance to stay on-site with koalas and wombats. A nature-lovers nirvana, our Tripping Magazine journo stayed in a Private Bungalow.

WHAT WAS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE? The Beach Bungalows are set amongst seven acres of natural bush. It was rustic and relaxing, away from the crowds, set amid the beauty of nature. There was a koala in a eucalypt mere metres from my bungalow! I had the comfort of a Queen-sized bed and my own bar fridge to keep beverages cold. It was the ideal blend of privacy and comfort with the natural native aspects.

WHAT IS SOME OF THE NATIVE WILDLIFE YOU CAN EXPERIENCE? As Bungalow Bay adjoins the National Park an amazing number of native wildlife is found within the

38

village. Rock Wallabies and Agile wallabies can be found on dusk and curlews between the bungalows, possums make an appearance at night and wild koala’s are often sotted in the eucalypt trees. Winter time also sees the “butterfly walk” come alive with a migration of blue tiger butterflies in their thousands making the paperbark forest their destination. There is a rainbow lorikeet feeding daily at 4:15pm, an opportunity to get covered with colourful friends! Of course, Bungalow Bay has its own amazing Wildlife Park too. Four full time rangers conduct three daily educational tours featuring Australian Wildlife. Hold a crocodile, wrap a python around you and meet the four resident koala’s. Cuddle a Koala opportunities are available. Fun fact - Australia’s most northerly wild population of koala’s can be found in the surrounds with over 800 calling Magnetic Island home.

HAVE BREAKFAST WITH KOALAS! Enjoy a setting that is very Australian with paperbark trees and pandanus forming a canopy over the breakfast area. Hosted by rangers you will not only get the chance to meet the resident koala’s, you will take away

www.bungalowbay.com.au

an educational experience that will make a difference. Hosted three mornings per week between 8.30 to 10am on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday morning you will enjoy a gourmet breakfast with a twist. Hang out with “Hagrid” and learn about his story, a rescue koala that now calls the village home.

WHAT ELSE MAKES BUNGALOW BAY KOALA VILLAGE GREAT? The friendly team know the island’s secrets intimately. Grab snorkel gear from reception and be guided to the best snorkelling spots on the island. They also know the best walking tracks to spot koalas in the wild. The open-air Deck Bar is a great place to relax and grab a pizza. Lay back in a hammock, relax on a beanbag and enjoy meeting and mingling with people from all over the world with a cold beverage in hand. The nearby pool and spa is a great place to relax after walking one of the nature tracks. Magnetic Island is an Instagrammable paradise; every corner you turn there’s a wallaby, view, beach or piece of nature to capture. Base yourself at Bungalow Bay Koala Village for the best of nature in abundance.

Go Your Own Way! With

W

hy not hire your own boat for the ultimate independent adventures tour of the Whitsunday Islands? The local boat hire company depart from Abell Point Marina and are essentially your mate, with a boat. They deliver your vessel to the boat ramp so all you need to do is board and bon voyage! With family visiting from the UK we decided to take them to see the Whitsunday Islands and chose Airlie Boat Hire because we loved the freedom you get with a self-drive tour. We could avoid the crowds, explore remote inlets and, most importantly, go at our own pace. Our hire boat was comfortable and well maintained; it glided through the water easily and was straightforward for my husband to navigate. Everything is provided or available upon request. We stocked the eski (cool box) with drinks and snacks for the day and took fishing gear, snorkeling equipment and even an inflatable tube for my twelve year old son to enjoy. Airlie Boat Hire also provide sun shelters, wake and knee boards and water skis. As we flew across the bay, the sun on our faces, the sea air running passed our ears and the stunning Whitsunday seascape racing by, we knew we were fully prepared for an exciting family adventure. The Whitsunday Island group is the perfect playground for all types of vessel. Even the inexperienced can feel safe in its sheltered waters, protected by the islands and Great Barrier Reef. We navigated easily from

Airlie Boat Hire

island to island and managed to find many secluded bays, taking-in some sensational snorkeling sites. Pulling up at Hill Inlet was an unforgettable moment. We anchored in the sandy bay and took a bushwalk through the rainforest to the lookout point so we could see the swirling sands of Whitehaven Beach. From here we walked down to the pure white silica beach and watched sting rays and tiny lemon sharks play in the shallow sandy seabed. On the way back to the marina as we traversed the passage between the islands and the mainland we couldn’t believe how much marine life we saw. From breaching whales (visible in the winter months only) to pods of dolphins and even a rare form of snout-nosed dolphin; we were given a special Whitsunday welcome by them all! The entire day was a fantastic adventure, which was made even more special by the friendly, personal service offered by owners Deb and Bob. Airlie Boat Hire have recently re-branded and you can see their vibrant green vessels from miles away! We chose to go with an Independently owned company because we enjoy a personal service where nothing is too much trouble. The beauty of Airlie Boat Hire is having the freedom to go where you want, when you want. We saw the Whitsunday Islands our way and because of that, we had a family adventure we will remember forever. Visit airlieboathire.com.au for more information.

Alani on Hamilton Island FOR THE DISCERNING TRAVELLER SEEKING EXCLUSIVITY IN LUXURIOUS SURROUNDINGS, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE ALANI EXPERIENCE. Alani’s luxury motor yacht is an 82 foot, Sunseeker masterpiece, with lush interior appointments by famed New York designer, Alan Wanzenberg. This 5-star cruising experience is the best way to see and experience the wonder of the Whitsundays, with completely customisable charter options, from three hour day-trips to opulent overnighters complete with your own private chef. Alani completes the luxury holiday offering with the equivalent in fine architecture on land at the Alani House on Hamilton Island.

ABOUT THE CRUISE… We opted for a six hour cruise, allowing us to experience some of the lesser-known signature experiences the Whitsundays has to offer. We had an intimate group of six passengers and our bare boat experience came with two crew members supplied, who took us to incredible locations I had never experienced in the Whitsundays before. With the ability to cater for 35 passengers onboard, Alani is a surprisingly affordable luxury option for larger group celebrations. A highlight of our excursion was Nara Inlet, where we saw incredible Aboriginal cave paintings and beautiful waterfalls. Of course we had to spend time at world-famous Whitehaven beach, but our crew knew where to anchor and what time to visit to beat the crowds. We had a large part of the beach to ourselves while enjoying time on the stand-up paddle boards and our very own inflatable water slide! Who says you can’t have a little fun on a luxury cruise. We opted for the inclusion of canape platters, with a sublime selection of cheese, fruit and seafood. Our crew also found an exclusive location for snorkelling where we saw a beautiful array of tropical fish. It was, quite simply, a perfect way to see the Whitsundays.

AFTER THE TOUR… We opted to continue the elegant experience on land for one night in pure opulence. With five bedrooms and six bathrooms, The Alani House provides unsurpassed luxury with breathtaking 180-degree views of Hamilton Island. The three-story home envelops you in luxury the moment you step inside. Incredible sunsets are a given from the three balconies, including an infinity pool, and the home comes complete with two golf buggies to zip around the island.

Yoga with a View

W

alking down towards Shingley Beach to meet-up with the local Stand-up Paddle Boarding guru, Mark Pearson, I felt a buzz of adrenaline. It was 4.45pm and I was about to do an hour of yoga whilst balancing on a paddleboard to the backdrop of a beautiful Whitsunday sunset. Marks’s colleague, Californian born stand-up paddleboarding yoga expert, Soy, was to be our instructor. If her bronzed toned limbs were anything to go by, we were about to be taught by a pro! Soy introduced herself enthusiastically and explained we would be paddling across the bay to a long rope and would tie our paddleboards to this rope for the duration of the lesson. I was

relieved to hear this as I wondering how I was going maintain a yoga position while preventing my paddleboard from drifting. Fortunately, we were enclosed within the rock walls of Abell Point Marina and the location was stunning. Rows of white yachts were moored close-by and at a distance the sun was still beating brightly. I was in a group of six women. Two older Australian ladies who were in Airlie Beach on holiday, one Canadian backpacker and two local mums who were here to get away from their children. We paddled out into the bay and all drifted around, laughing at our inability to direct the boards properly while Soy fastened us to the ropes. Once we were all lined-up, Soy drifted out in front and we began the class with slow breathing exercises followed by some gentle stretches. She instructed us to listen to our breathing, become conscious of our bodies, and as I did this I felt myself drift off into a kind of trance. I could sense the gentle lapping of the water against my board, the breeze as it brushed past my face and my breath in the

cool afternoon air with such clarity. All the while, Soy’s soothing voice directed each move. With each new position, we pulled and held, I could feel the energy flow through my body like never before. It was amazing how simple stretches made my body feel so good and at ‘peace’. As the sun began its final decent behind the silhouetted hillside beyond, a slight breeze pickedup and little birds dashed and dotted around the water. The serenity and beauty of our location was breath taking. Afterwards, I felt I had emerged from my trance newly awakened and energised. My body felt invigorated from a workout but without the breathless sweat, pounding heart and heavy lifting I normally had to endure. At all times I felt safe and comfortable on my board. Any age can try this and Soy is an exceptionally good teacher who ensures everyone works to their own pace and level of difficulty. A lasting memory will be the final position where I had one leg stretched in front of me and the other curled under my bottom. From here, I stretched my arms up over my head and brought them down to the paddleboard directly behind me, folding my head under so I could see upside down. The shimmering glass-like water appeared to be the sky and the houses in the hillside in the distance underneath. It was totally surreal. Would I try this again? I would do it every day if I could!

Namaste.

g n i t f a R Ocean ARE YOU READY FOR THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE? Ocean Rafting offers a selection of highspeed, life-changing tours around the Whitsunday Islands, combining the very best of iconic experiences. Within the space of seven magical hours you’ll find yourself immersed in an underwater wonderland, snorkelling pristine coral surrounded by a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. Then, set foot on the purest white silica sand in the world on Whitehaven Beach before embarking on a guided bush walk through a national park to arrive at the panoramic lookout of Hill Inlet. Three bucket-list worthy adventures packed into one excursion. Can you handle this much fun?

What tours are available? Ocean Rafting provide two main tours, tailored to your preference of snorkelling or spending more time on Whitehaven Beach. Northern Exposure takes you on an exhilarating ride to the northern islands of the Whitsundays for two epic sessions of snorkelling around secret locations surrounding Hook Island. Catch a glimpse of Hayman Island as you glide past to see where the rich and famous hang out in the Whitsundays before arriving at your first snorkel destination. After two snorkelling sites, your high-speed boat zooms toward world-famous Whitehaven Beach. Enjoy a buffet-style lunch on the white sand of Hill Inlet at the Northen end of Whitehaven Beach before embarking on your bush walk to the iconic Hill Inlet lookout, to see the silica swirls among the turquoise and aqua water. The second tour option is Southern Lights, where you visit one snorkelling destination

and then enjoy two hours relaxing at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach. You then get to experience the northern end by Hill Inlet before bush-walking to the Hill Inlet Lookout.

What is included in the tour? Other than life-changing experiences and a whole heap of fun, both tours include expert guides who fill you full of information about the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef along the journey. Ocean Rafting’s semi-rigid inflatable vessels are super-fast, making the ride itself part of the adventure. Twist and turn across the waves for a ride that resembles an adrenalininspired jet boat adventure for added fun. They are the fastest day-trip boats in the Whitsundays meaning you’ll have more time snorkelling and on the beach by reaching your destinations faster! The buffet lunch can be included for a small additional cost; but the spread of seafood, meat, fruit, bread and salads is certainly worth it! After snorkelling, the bar officially opens; beer, cider, water and soft drinks can be purchased throughout the journey. If you don’t have an underwater camera, no worries! The guides will take photos of your group throughout the day and images can be purchased online a couple of days after your tour.

What were the best parts of the tour? The biggest highlight of the tour for me was when our boat cruised up Hill Inlet to deliver us to a special beach within Hill Inlet at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. Ocean Rafting are the only commercial operator in the world to have access to this exclusive area, so this was an exciting first for me.

A A match made in heaven

lmost too good too eat (but not quite), Fish D'vine's beef and reef masterpiece puts the Cor! in Corden Bleu, and it's easy to see why it is co-owner and Food Junkie Bec Clark's favourite way to enjoy a steak. Inspired by a classic dish, but with a modern twist and more than a nod to local sourcing, Great Barrier Reef diners bow before thick cut, grain-fed Angus sirloin crowned with fresh tiger prawns. Pairing meat and shellfish is nothing new. The world's first celebrity chef, Antonin CarĂŠme, floated Napoleon and Josephine's bateau with veal chops and oysters, and almost every culinary tradition celebrates the best that field and foam gifts the matchmaking cook. But something special happens when they share a plate in Airlie Beach. Fish D'vine's char-grilled marriage of land and sea is served on a bed of slow-roasted thyme and garlic infused potatoes, and naturally sweet, caramelized Bowen organic zucchini. And as if this foursome weren't seductive enough, the succulent steak arrives draped in a silky garlic and Reisling number that barely conceals the dish's modesty. A world away from your average surf and turf offering, it comes as no surprise that Fish D'vine have succeeded in elevating the gastronomic union of seafood and red meat to new heights. The award-winning eatery in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef has romanced dining for nigh on 15 years. These days, 17 chefs share Collin's and Clark's appetite for authenticity well-seasoned with imagination, and like ushers at the wedding of the year, this dish is their happy couple.

Mika Live BBQ & Bar “Luscious Latin delicacies are available alongside an appetizing array of the best Brazilian BBQ dishes at Mika. This authentic Brazilian restaurant offers a traditional rodizio-style dining experience that is flavourful, entertaining and unforgettably delicious.”

G

et serenaded by some slammin’ samba and prepare your tastebuds for smokin’ BBQ skewers; it’s about to get hot, hot, hot at Airlie Beach’s Mika Live BBQ & Bar. What food is available? Mika has recently launched a new menu which showcases a tempting lineup of both vegetarian and meat-loving taste sensations. Proving that Brazilian isn’t only about the protein, the vegetarian menu includes a dairy and glutenfree veggie lasagna and veggie ‘wings’ which are crispy battered cauliflower florets, tossed in a house-made sweet chilli sauce and served with a citrus aioli dipping sauce. The vegetarian sizzling hot plate is also a feast for the senses. Mika’s famous chicken wings come in a range of mouthwatering flavours and can be ordered in half-kilo serves. If you’re sensitive to spice, try the lemony pepper or Brazilian BBQ flavour, but if you like your bite with a bang, opt for the mango habanero or ghost. A full menu is available serving favourite fare such as wraps, burgers and salads as well as full meals with a focus on seafood and steak. A Kid’s menu with free ice cream is a hit with the little ones. Importantly, it’s also affordable. All-day $15 specials for pasta, steak and seafood are available.

What is Churrasco – all-you-can-eat Brazilian BBQ? Pronounced Shoo-Has-Co, Churrasco is quite literally Latin food love. The heart and soul of Brazilian cuisine, Churrasco originated in the early 18th century among the gauchos or cowboys of the Rio Grande do Sul region in Brazil, on the wide-open plains of the pampas. The phenomenon of cooking tender skewered meat slowly over coals quickly reached Brazilian cities and then the rest of the world. At Mika, a selection of prime cuts are slowly barbecued over smoked wood coals until tender. This unique dining experience is thanks to a twometre tall hot coal live BBQ rotisserie filled with smoked wood coals to flavour the meat. Three levels of rotating skews produce flavours that you would normally have to fly overseas to experience, but thankfully, the taste of Latin America is here in Airlie Beach. Accompanied by a selection of tasty sides, Churrasquerios (barbecue chefs) circulate throughout the restaurant, brandishing skewers of succulent meat and carving delicacies for guests at the table. This all-you-can-eat feast of meat, seafood and sides is available Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings – from 5:30 p.m.

Where is Mika located? Mika Live BBQ & Bar is located at 1 Airlie Esplanade, opposite the main beach and parkway in Airlie Beach. When is Mika open? Open 6 days per week (Closed Mondays) Open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. – open all day during these times. What about functions? Mika can host groups varying in size up to 90 people. Get in quick for Christmas bookings, Mika are taking bookings now for over the Christmas holiday period for work functions, family gatherings and parties; no group too small, you can reserve a table with two people! Mika brings the rich culture and distinct flavour of Brazil to Airlie Beach. With its vibrant ambiance, delicious food and specialty drinks, pure joy awaits at Mika.

Whatever you devour, make sure it’s washed down with one of the fruity cocktails or a jug of refreshing ale.

Mantra Club Croc is conveniently located on Shute Harbour Road within walking distance of the Whitsunday Shopping Centre and a short two minute drive to the vibrant main street of Airlie Beach. What makes Mantra Club Croc a great place to stay? The modern décor greets you as you enter Mantra Club Croc’s refurbished reception area. This is where the magic begins. The amenities are fabulous, the pool is beautiful and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, but the biggest stand-out feature of Mantra Club Croc is the level of service. I was greeted warmly and personally shown to my room. Throughout my entire stay, every staff member I encountered was friendly, polite and professional. They went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect, down to delivering cocktails poolside, taking my wet towel after a swim and recommending nearby attractions. They also make a fantastic coffee which can be a rarity at a hotel. The atmosphere at dinner is memorable, dining poolside with live entertainment and delicious locally-inspired cuisine. Breakfast is a must-do, the buffet is exceptional with plenty of choice and food is replenished frequently. It’s affordable luxury, providing service well above its price-point, delivering an exceptional Whitsunday experience. www.mantra.com.au

ROSE BAY RESORT, BOWEN

UNTOUCHED BEAUTY AT ROSE BAY RESORT, BOWEN

T

here is a feeling of seclusion and intimacy at Rose Bay Resort that leaves a special place in your heart. Located in Bowen, a small holiday town at the northern end of the Whitsunday Islands, Rose Bay Resort is situated in a private remote bay. This little nook of paradise is a discreet, hidden area with no passing traffic and a raw, natural beauty.

Our one bedroom apartment was fitted with a full-kitchen, modern appliances and tea and coffee making facilities. In addition, the bathroom had a large shower with a separate bath tub for a long leisurely soak after the days activities. Downstairs, the landscaped gardens lead directly to the beach and also the resort’s swimming-pool. These areas are charming and well-maintained. Stunning Surroundings

In fitting with this, the small picturesque Rose Bay Resort has a relaxed, casual atmosphere and charming ambiance. With its absolute beachfront location and uninterrupted views across the pristine bay and out towards the Coral Sea, the resort is a unique and truly special place to holiday.

The peace and tranquillity of Rose Bay Resort means we could do as little as we like but also venture off on quiet walks in nature. Our favourite place was Kings Beach, which is close-by, and, at low tide, we could walk the whole length of the bay, which is stunning.

Award Winning Accommodation

Rose Bay offers some of the most untouched coral reef in Bowen. The marine life in this area is incredible. It is a place where turtles hatch, possums play, dolphins dally, coloured crays are caught, and whales can be watched in the winter months.

Winner of several Tourism Awards, Rose Bay Resort offers a variety of self-contained accommodation options. This includes twobedroom penthouses, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and one-bedroom studios. The accommodation is spotlessly clean with well-maintained appliances and a homely feel. During our stay we enjoyed the luxury of a private balcony with uninterrupted sea views. This spacious outdoor area was our favourite place to relax and we often kept the doors open to allow the cool sea breeze to flow through.

A Sunrise Spectacular The easterly facing aspect of the resort provides guests with a sunny surprise each morning as the sun rises. One of our lasting memories will be watching the bright orange globe transform the sky and light up our room while we laid in our bed each morning. It was a special experience we will remember forever. www.rosebayresort.com.au

AIRLIE APARTMENTS

1, 2 & 3 Bedroom Holiday Apartments

WHERE ARE AIRLIE APARTMENTS LOCATED? This was our first visit to Airlie Beach and we were thrilled to discover everything was in walking distance. The apartments are perfectly positioned overlooking Abell Point Marina and a short five minute walk into town. We were close to the lively town centre but far enough away to enjoy the quiet sanctuary when we returned home in the evening.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE? There are 15 apartments in total ranging from 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms. For a little extra you can book poolside rooms or even the Superior Ocean View apartment. If you are on a budget, however, all the apartments are affordable yet comfortable and that’s why we chose Airlie Apartments. We took a one-bedroom garden view apartment which suited our budget and well-surpassed our expectations. Our apartment was spacious, light and airy with a comfortable lounge, flat screen T.V., a fully equipped kitchen which had been recently renovated with new appliances and air-conditioning throughout. We also had our own private verandah which quickly became our favourite place to sit as it had a partial sea view which was another hidden extra we didn’t expect!

WHAT FACILITIES ARE ON OFFER? Free Wi-Fi is available in all the apartments. Onsite under cover car parking for all guests and if you have a small boat, there is space to keep it onsite if you are out boating. There is a large shaded swimming-pool which is the social heart of the apartment complex. The pool overlooks Abell Point Marina and there are bbq facilities with comfortable seating for large groups. The atmosphere was light and friendly and it was easy to chat to other holiday makers.

Unlike the majority of accommodation in Airlie Beach, Portside Whitsunday is located roadside, so there are no hills to climb when you take the leisurely stroll to the town centre.

What makes Portside Whitsunday a great place to stay? As a regular traveller, I couldn’t fault our two-bedroom apartment. This is what impressed me the most personally, is that every feature is thoughtfully considered. From premium appliances and plenty of cooking essentials in the large kitchen, to a full-size dining table, plentiful comfortable seating in the spacious lounge and a large television with a selection of premium Foxtel channels (cable television). The master bedroom also has its own television as well as access to the sea-view balcony. Each room has modern airconditioning units and ceiling fans for fast comfort on a hot tropical day as well as large closets and mirrors. Our apartment came with two bathrooms, providing another level of comfort and luxury; allowing for hisand-her vanity space, two toilets, a bath and a separate shower. Of course, the highlight is when you go up one more level of stairs to open the door to your own private rooftop courtyard. This spacious area featured a large jacuzzi, barbecue, dining furniture and private sun loungers. Pure bliss. Portside Whitsunday also provides a heated wet-edge pool and spa nestled amid the privacy of a tropical garden setting as well as an undercover barbecue area. The friendly reception team are more than happy to recommend the best of Airlie, can assist with tour bookings and can arrange airport transfers. A delight for the discerning traveller, Portside Whitsunday provides luxury you can afford. www.portsidewhitsunday.com.au

SUNLIT WATERS

P

eter and Sandra Wilson are from Tasmania and have been retired for ten years. During this time they have travelled extensively overseas. When they were looking for an Australian holiday where they could relax and unwind, a friend suggested they might like the Whitsundays. “Our friend suggested Sunlit Waters as they had been going back every year for more than 13 years and couldn’t recommend it highly enough,” said Peter. “Fortunately we followed their advice and discovered this little piece of paradise,” agreed Sandra. This is the second year in a row that Peter and Sandra have spent their holiday at Sunlit Waters in Airlie Beach, Gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. We caught up with them to find out more about their experience. Tell us about the accommodation at Sunlit Waters:

Sunlit Waters has the ability to book numerous tours and activities for the same price as local tour desks. Fiona and Chris have excellent local knowledge and can recommend some great experiences and adventures, having been on many themselves. Location? Sunlit Waters is located only a short walk from Airlie Beach town centre, far enough away from the Main Street to be very relaxing and peaceful at night. It is situated on the crest of Airlie Crescent with the best views in Airlie Beach. It is the perfect location from which to explore the local area. We enjoyed a scenic helicopter flight to Whitehaven Beach with ample time to view the scenery of the outer islands by air. We also took a day trip to Hamilton Island which is just a short ferry ride away.

We stayed in a studio apartment, which is spacious and very well equipped with everything you need to be self-sufficient. The room is spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and a weekly full clean provided. There is a semi private balcony with a fabulous view over Abell Point Marina and a brilliant view of Airlie Sunsets.

Sunlit Waters is a short walk to Saturday Markets located at the foreshore where you can purchase fresh local produce.

How are the facilities?

Fiona and Chris made our stay so enjoyable right from the outset. They are so accommodating and do little extras to ensure your stay is enjoyable.

Fiona and Chris are so friendly and welcoming to all their guests. It has a feeling of home away from home and a great place to escape the Tasmanian winter. So much so, we have booked again for next year!

We would definitely recommend Sunlit Waters
