Welcome Booklet

Welcome Welcome Dia dhaoibh, First of all we would like to extend a warm welcome to you all, on behalf of all of the organisers of Cork2014 and the National Committee of EYP Ireland. We've all been working on this project for so long and it's so exciting to see it all finally coming together. Frankly, the session and all of our work would be completely in vain, were it not for your participation and contribution to the conference. With that in mind, we would also like to thank you all for taking part in this great initiative and demonstrating yourself to be an active European citizen. The theme of the conference, as your are all aware at this stage, is 'Green light for Technology and Innovation'. We aspire to pursue this with you all on board, to develop and evolve the conference to fit the theme as we move forward. As young people, we have the right to question the world around us, to show innovation in our daily lives, and to quickly adapt to technological change! With that in mind, what better group of people to discuss the future of European policy with a focus on technology and innovation? We are looking forward to welcoming you to Cork in a couple of weeks time. In the meantime, you can find any updates to do with the session on our facebook page or on the session website. Alternatively, please feel free to get in touch with our participants' team is wholly dedicated to making sure that all of your questions and queries to do with the session are fully answered and dealt with. Session Theme Welcome Green Light for Technology and Innovation What does “Green Light for Technology and Innovation” mean? The team of Cork2014 propose a session with committees who look at the challenges as well as opportunities provided by the fast paced and ever developing world of technology. Innovation has become a buzzword over the past few years despite its existence being crucial to the evolution of the way we live for a much longer time. The Latin verb innovare means to make or create new, or to adapt or change for the better. This is exactly what delegates of Cork2014 will do. By researching and discussing legislative policies of the European Union, by altering them and aiming to improve upon what is already in existence, the very EYP experience which delegates go through will be innovative and creative. The growing technological landscape which we live in today is exciting; often providing opportunities beyond our imaginations. But why are these developments not always Green? The pace of growth and development is staggering, which equally poses its difficulties and challenges. How can we harness innovation that technology allows us to access? How can we work with new ideas and developments and combine them with ‘Green Thinking’ as the environmental changes and debates continue. But Green Solutions and Innovation don’t just apply to technology. As problems in the Middle East and other parts of the world escalate, delegates of Cork2014 are challenged to come up with Innovative, different solutions to that which has been previously touched upon. Each committee at the forum, consisting of approximately twelve delegates from twelve different European countries and Member States, will require innovative thinking when dealing with their particular topic, in the hope of creating a greater, greener future.

Preliminary Programme Welcome

Elements of the Session Welcome Teambuilding

EuroVillage

Teambuilding is one of the core elements of the Session. It will provide you with a fun and challenging way of getting to know your committee. During Teambuilding, you will be challenged to carry out several activities that are aimed at ensuring you get along well with your fellow participants and that your committee becomes a well-functioning team. Bear in mind that Teambuilding will at times take place outside, therefore we strongly recommend you bring warm clothes and rain jackets in order to protect yourself from Irish weather. Dress Code: Comfortable and warm clothing (rain protection advised) Staying true to EYP traditions, on evening after teambuilding, each National Delegation at Cork 2014 will put together a small stall, featuring items from their country (souvenirs, information brochures, anything that can possibly be linked to your native country) a flag in the background and, of course, lots and lots of national culinary delicacies to be sampled. Note: Alcohol will be allowed in small quantities at Eurovillage, provided it is 15% or under and that Irish law is respected at all times. Underage delegates (those under 18 years) will not be allowed consume alcohol at any events of Cork2014. Dress Code: Casual or National Costumes

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony will be the first truly formal moment of the Forum and, as the name indicates, will serve to officially open Cork 2014. Delegates will be addressed by several respected speakers and important figures, motivating them to work hard on their Resolutions in the coming week. Dress Code: Formal

Committee Work

The central part of any session. Delegates will come together in Committeesand sit down to discuss their given topic. Their goal is to write a Resolution on their assigned topic with which they can all agree on and, of course, defend during the General Assembly. Dress Code: Smart

Elements of the Session Welcome Committee Dinners

Committee Dinners offer the delegates yet another opportunity to get to know one another within their Committee, this time with a relaxing evening meal at one of Cork city’s many restaurants. Dress Code: Casual

EuroConcert

In recognition of the many artistically gifted amongst us, this evening event will offer every participant a chance to showcase their abilities, be that by playing an instrument, singing or dancing or any other talent they may possess. Auditions for Euroconcert will be held during Teambuilding. Note. Euroconcert shall be held after the first day of GA, so dress appropriately in the morning and delegates wishing to change will have to do so in UCC. Dress Code: Formal

World CafĂŠ

World CafĂŠ will consist in a number of short round table discussions, allowing delegates to sit at a table of another committee and discuss their resolution with them before entering GA. The aim is for delegates to ask questions about the other topics as well as the solutions which other committees have come up with. This event will also be attended by a number of local students. Dress Code: Formal

General Assembly

After Committee Work, the participants will convene at the General Assembly. For two days, all of the Resolutions will be presented, defended, attacked, debated and voted on by the delegates. Dress Code: Formal

Closing Ceremony

The Closing Ceremony officially closes the event. There will be speeches from representatives of the Officials teams, of the National Committee of EYP Ireland and the President of the Forum. It is a moment that is usually filled with hugs and tears, as this is goodbye for the participants of the session. Dress Code: Formal

Elements of the Session Welcome Farewell Party

This party, the last one, will mark the end to an incredible week. It will take place on the last night of the Forum and offer a chance for participants to say goodbye to the friends they've made over the past week. The farewell party of Cork 2014 will begin with a Gala dinner and finish up with a masquerade ball in the old city Gaol. Dress Code: Black tie

Dresscode Explained With such a variety of different elements and activities during the session, we understand you may be unsure as to what you are exactly expected to wear! We want you to feel comfortable about your clothes, so please read carefully while we explain the different dress codes below: Comfortable This dress code applies to Teambuilding, where you will be doing various exercises and games, both indoors and outdoors. You are free to wear any type of clothing you feel comfortable in, as long as you are able to run around and are not afraid to perhaps get a little bit dirty! Casual This dress code applies to informal evening activities, and gives you the freedom to choose any type of clothing you feel comfortable in. Smart During Committee Work you will be required to dress smart. You will not be expected to wear your suit, but worn-out jeans with sneakers don’t quite fit the smart clothing requirements either. Preferably you wear something in between. Often we tell people to dress as if you are going for a job interview Formal During Opening Ceremony, Euroconcert, General Assembly and the Gala Dinner you will be expected to dress formally. This means suits with ties for gentlemen, and suits, dresses or long skirts for the ladies!
