babyourself LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
“home” for the holidays ‘Tis the season for giving thanks and celebrating with friends and family. Time for office parties, Christmas programs and New Year’s Eve gatherings. This year my family and I will be in Florida for the holidays. And even though we have lived in Florida for 12 years now, it’s still not “home”. It’s bittersweet I suppose. I love the traditions we have started here in Florida, but oh how I miss “home”. It’s hard knowing all of my sisters and their families - my grandma and aunts and uncles - and yes, my mom and dad will all be together in Iowa. (Okay, please pass the tissues!) So now that it’s official that I’m here in Central Florida for the holidays, there are a few things on my personal “holiday happenings” list. First, I will be “on call” to assist a family with the birth of their second child. I was their doula with their firstborn, and being with them for their second is an honor I couldn’t pass up! With a due date of December 24, I might be spending part of my Christmas with a precious brand new baby! Another item on my list of things to do this season is to help out at the Waterford Lakes Gift Wrapping Event! Babyourself has the privilege to sponsor this month-long event, benefiting Kiwanis Club of Avalon Park, Toys for Tots, and Second Harvest Food Bank. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to donate toys and food items, and also get your kids involved with giving back (plus who doesn’t love having someone else wrap their presents for them?) And to make your trip to Waterford Lakes Town Center that much sweeter, check out page 11’s holiday gift card giveaway. We’ve got something for everyone!

Best Photographers
Orlando’s by Orlando Moms Guide
In addition to listing out your picks for the top photographers, we also sat down with a few to learn what inspires them and how they became a professional picture taker... Your motto? "What would you attempt if you knew you would not fail?" That's what I told myself 10 years ago when I dove head first into starting my business. I knew I belonged somewhere with a camera in my hand, doing what I love, so I jumped and didn't look back. Thankfully it's worked out quite well. Describe the moment when you said, “I want to be a photographer... like for real!” I've always loved photography and pouring over old family photos. I had a full-time career as a newlywed but when we were ready to start a family, I wanted to do something that would give me flexibility to make my own schedule. The fact that it was also something I loved was just a bonus. I had no clue what I was doing at first but I wasn't going to let that little fact stop me. Things took off quickly and I've hung on for the ride ever since.

My most memorable photo shoot? Hmmm, that's a tough one. I have hundreds of shoots every year so there's too many to pick from. Most are fun, some are tough, but it's always an adventure. Who is my inspiration? My girls. They are constantly teaching me, showing me the world in new ways. Because of them, I feel like my work evolved from simple photoshoots into truly trying to capture fun in every moment. I will have kids jumping, screaming, running and laughing. I like feeling that for that little moment in time, I captured the fun of childhood, the love of being a parent, and the warmth of a family. My girls remind me of all of those things daily.

Amy Raub www.amyraub.com
Your Motto? When working with newborns, my motto is "Baby First." From preparing props to safely working with the babies, I keep this in mind. Also, I let the baby determine how the photoshoot will progress. Does the baby need to eat? Are they happiest in mommy's arms? These are all the subjective parts of a photoshoot that we make work for each family. Do you have kids? Yes, I have two boys ages 2 and 4. They are my favorite subjects (of course). They have huge smiles and are extremely funny and outgoing little guys.
Who is your inspiration? Twins Kelley Ryden and Tracy Raver. Their newborn posing class was amazing. They are philanthropists for newborn charities and are so inspiring and open with their instruction.
Sari Underwood www.sariunderwoodphoto.com
Your Motto? Less is more. This is true in so many aspects of life, but it also applies to my work and how I approach sessions. I try to keep things simple.
Do you have kids? Yes, my daughter Olivia just turned 9 and my son Caleb is 4.
Describe the moment when you said, "I want to be a photographer... like for real!" I had been an avid hobbyist ever since my daughter was born and I got into digital scrapbooking. From that, my interest and love for photography grew and after I had my son, I decided to pursue it seriously. Being a small business owner is such a challenge but I really do love it! Describe your most memorable photoshoot... good or bad! My first ever session with a total stranger who found me via a Google search. It was super nerve-wracking, but it went very well and she is still my client today. In fact, I just photographed her second baby girl! Night owl or early riser? Definitely night owl! Confession time, what reality show sucks you in every time?! Million Dollar Listing.
Describe the moment when you said, "I want to be a photographer... like for real!" There wasn’t really a moment when I decided I wanted to be a photographer. You could say photography has been calling me all along. From snapping 100's of shots with my first camera at the age of 6, to photographing 100's of children per day at my very first job. From the beginning, one thing is for sure. I have always had two loves: photography and children!
Erika Hopkins
Describe your most memorable photoshoot... good or bad! Most recently, I took pictures of a baby that spent two months in the NICU. The parents were so excited for the shoot, but we wanted to wait until it was safe to do the shoot and until the baby was off oxygen so they could do shots of him in their arms. Seeing these first-time parents with their little miracle is the best part of this profession.
Do you have kids? Yes, I have an 8-monthold little girl; she is the light of my life. She has completely changed my vision behind the camera. Love is an amazing thing, something you can’t really describe, and something so amazing it hurts.
Night owl or early riser? Night owl. I feel the most productive working into the wee hours of the night. There is something about the quiet darkness that keeps me extremely focused. Plus, for every hour I work at night is an extra hour I am able to spend with my daughter during the day!
Confession time, what reality show sucks you in every time?! Rehab Addict on DIY Network. In my spare time, I enjoy taking old, tired antiques and bringing them back to their glory days. Maybe in my next life I will rehab houses AND be a newborn photographer!
www.erikahopkinsphotography.com
Describe the moment when you said, "I want to be a photographer... like for real!" I was at a newborn posing class in Nashville with arguably some of the best newborn photographers in the South. It was very early on in my career. I still utilize the skill set taught in that class every day.
Your Motto? A portrait session is more than rich colors and soft airy light, it’s about having fun and letting me capture pure unguarded LOVE.
Elisabeth Nixon www.elisabethnixonphotography.com
Do you have kids? Yes! God has blessed my husband and I with three awesome kiddos.
Describe the moment when you said, "I want to be a photographer... like for real!" I think I was maybe three years into owning my own photography business. I wasn't crazy successful or well known – but it was something I enjoyed and I did well. Then it occurred to me one day that it was EXACTLY what I wanted to do. And I really don't want to do anything else! Describe your most memorable photoshoot... good or bad! Well there are a lot of them that involve poop. Yeah, I said it. Photographing babies means I get to see lots of it. During one shoot though, the mom had the wonderful idea to bring her daughter's nursery OUTSIDE and so we chose a beautiful location with lots of trees and shade, mom and dad brought a bunch of stuff from her nursery and as soon as we laid the baby down, poop started raining down on us. There were these big birds nesting above us – TONS OF THEM – and the poop literally was raining on us. We kept the poop off the baby and every time we heard new drops coming we'd all cringe and wait to see who "got it." It was totally worth it – one of my favorite photoshoots EVER. Night owl or early riser? Neither. I'd like to sleep in, take a nap and then go to bed early. I may not actually sleep the whole time but I sure do enjoy a snuggle with my kiddos, to read a book or just lay in the "twilight zone" where ideas come from. (I sound super lazy – I'm not. I actually LOVE physical activity but....I also REALLY love to sleep.) babyourself.com • Holiday 2013

Let’s be honest. Secretly we all hope to bring a dish to our holiday parties that will end up being the hit of the night! That one dish that everyone begs you to bring for every gathering. No need to brag, but being able to whip up something spectacular to bring, while balancing the beautiful chaos each day holds puts you in the “Mom Of The Year” category too! Trouble is most of us don’t have the time! But no need to fear, these babies are easy, quick and will bring on the compliments! This Holiday season, be the hit of night when you bring the best dish to share!

“When my kids were younger, several friends and I would get together regularly for a girls’ night out. Invariably, one of us would order a Monte Cristo sandwich to share. We thought the deep-fried sandwich was so delicious that it surely must be especially naughty to eat. Thus the ‘naughty sandwich’ was born. Those memories are so special to me that I wanted to make something that reminded me of the ‘naughty sandwich.’” ~Vickie
Rosemary Goat Cheese & Cranberry Cheese Ball 1 block of cream cheese at room temperature Several fresh sprigs of rosemary 1 cup goat cheese 1 cup dried cranberries Salt and pepper to taste Mix together all ingredients and serve with crackers.

babyourself MOVE OF THE MONTH
Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain
By Kristen Scruggs
Repeat after me: It does not have to be the “inevitable five pound holiday weight gain” this year! By making a few small changes to recipes, adding exercise and trying out some tips and tricks for saving calories, you’ll be on the right track this year to make it through the big Thanksgiving and Christmas meals!
Tips on saving calories Don’t save all your calories for the holiday lunch/ dinner. You’ll be starving by the time everything is ready and make the wrong choices. Eat breakfast and have a few healthy snacks before the meal and don’t forget to drink lots of water. Don’t go crazy with the cocktails. The calories add up and who wants to drink all their calories and make foolish choices later with the “big meal?” Survey all the options before loading your plate. Fill your plate with lean protein (turkey breast) and vegetables (steer clear of those loaded with butter, cream sauces and oil) and then take small servings of your favorite items that aren’t normally available. It IS a special occasion, so you can splurge a little without going overboard.
Use whole wheat flour by substituting half the amount of white flour. This adds fiber to help slow digestion and increase fullness. Use light or reduced fat products such as reduced fat cream cheese, sour cream, shredded cheese, cool whip, butter or half and half. Use a liquid egg substitute versus whole eggs. Use cooking spray and non-stick pans versus adding butter or oil.
Family exercise ideas Take a morning or afternoon walk or bike ride together and aim for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. Bring the dog along, too! Play tag, jump rope, hula hoop, or toss a ball or Frisbee around. Find a holiday themed fun run with post-race activities for the kids. Some suggestions for local holiday races/5K’s are below. Nov. 23: Light Up UCF Knight Run 5K (evening run with a free iceskating ticket) Nov. 28: Track Shack Turkey Trot at Lake Eola Nov. 28: Avalon Park Turkey Trot Dec. 14: Track Shack’s Reindeer Run at SeaWorld Dec. 14: Avalon Park Jingle Bell Run Dec. 14: Santa’s Foot Pursuit in Winter Garden Dec. 14: Candy Cane 5K in Winter Springs Make exercise a priority! You’ll be consuming extra calories, so burn extra calories, too!
Send leftovers home with friends and family, especially the heavier items. Freeze whatever you have left so you don’t try to eat everything over the next few days before it goes bad. Stock up on Tupperware and Ziploc bags so it will be easier to send goodies home with your guests.
Reducing calories in holiday dishes Use less sugar or substitute with a no-calorie sweetener, such as Stevia. Use less fat. Butter and oil can be replaced with applesauce, avocado, Greek yogurt or canned pumpkin. Check online for a conversion chart.

Is Swaddling Safe?
By Dr. Gregory Gordon
Dr. Gregory Gordon grew up in Gainesville, Florida. He attended the University of Florida for both his undergraduate and medical degrees. After he completed his pediatric residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he joined Pediatric Associates of Orlando. Dr. Gordon is the proud father of eight children. He is the Vice President of “The Gift of Swimming” (a local charity that provides swim lessons to Orlando’s needy children). In early 2010 Dr. Gordon started gregorygordonmd.com to share his pediatric and parenting experience.
Prior to the “Back to Sleep” program popularized in the 1990s, most infants in the United States slept on their tummies (prone). I know my parents placed me on my stomach for sleep. Back then, experts thought prone sleeping was safer, as it was believed to protect infants from choking if they spit up. Parents did not question this advice as prone sleeping infants slept better. Unfortunately, children placed prone to sleep are at a much higher risk for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Once research revealed this startlingly finding, child advocates responded. The United States’ “Back to Sleep” program was launched to educate the public and protect children from SIDS through promoting back (supine) sleeping. As a medical student in the late 1990s, our professors taught us the merits of supine sleep. Our job was to educate new parents – not an easy task! Parents easily understood the theoretical advantage of lowering the risk of SIDS, but their children did not sleep well. Children placed on their backs did not settle down as easily or sleep as well as those placed on their tummies. Pediatricians and parents quickly adopted the technique of swaddling to comfort these children when placed on their backs for sleep. However, as the popularity of swaddling increased, so have concerns about its practice. Some experts today believe that swaddling could increase the risk of SIDS or increase a child’s risk of hip problems.
Place your infant on a rectangular blanket with his shoulders even with the top edge of the blanket. While holding his hands together and down with your right hand, fold the left corner across his left shoulder.
In the first two months of life, swaddling clearly reduces crying, as well as the risk of SIDS. The swaddling/SIDS controversy surrounds swaddling children two months and older. Some experts theorize that after two months, a swaddled child could increase their risk of SIDS by rolling over or covering their head with the blanket. While these are valid concerns, there is insufficient evidence to support them. In fact, current evidence shows that swaddling and placing a baby on their back reduces the risk of SIDS. Yes, it is true that swaddled children placed on their tummies are at an increased risk of SIDS. While this seems obvious, the one study often quoted to say “swaddling increases the risk of SIDS” did not differentiate between swaddled tummy verses swaddled back sleepers. Those studies that look exclusively at swaddling with back sleeping reveal a decrease in SIDS.
Swaddling and Hip Dysplasia Swaddling techniques and practices vary by culture. Swaddling techniques that strap an infant to a rigid board are clearly shown to increase an individual’s risk of developmental dysplasia of the hips (DDH). The Navajo Indian “cradle board” and the Japanese “swathing diaper” are notorious for causing DDH, as they do not allow the baby to flex their hips. Both of these populations had excessively high incidences of DDH until their swaddling practices were reformed.
Roll your son on his side and tuck the left corner of the blanket behind the child’s shoulder.
Fold the right corner of the blanket across his left shoulder. Tuck the right corner of the blanket behind the child’s shoulder.
To date, modern American swaddling techniques have not been directly shown to cause DDH. However, there is significant evidence to warrant caution when swaddling. Dr. Charles Price, a local Orlando pediatric orthopedist and the Director of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute said this about the link between swaddling and developmental dysplasia of the hips: Data from several other countries and an on-going United States study “suggests a mild increase in the number of late presenting cases. A slight increase has been documented and parallels the increasing popularity of swaddling.” It seems that tight swaddling that does not allow for flexion of the hips increases a child’s risk of DDH. As a pediatrician and a father, I cannot imagine raising children without swaddling. Swaddling is an effective way to reduce crying, reduce the risk of SIDS and promote good sleep habits. Parents can continue to swaddle their babies, but it should be done in a safe manner. To reduce the risk of SIDS: - Place infants swaddled on their back to sleep. - Stop swaddling your child when they turn over and sleep prone. - Choose a swaddling method where it is unlikely that a loose fold could cover a child’s face. To protect your child’s hips: - Swaddle them in a manner that allows maximal flexion of their hips. - Swaddling can be snug but never tight. These goals are best accomplished with the swaddling technique where the last fold is up. In this technique, the arms are folded in and in the final fold (up from the bottom), the hips are flexed. This method promotes hip flexion and loose folds that are closer to the feet than face. For more information on “hip safe swaddling”, visit www.hipdysplasia.org.
Fold the bottom flap up and wrap the flaps around the infant’s back.

Colt’s Transportation Nursery by Elisabeth Myrick
Photography by Elisabeth Nixon Photography
While transportation is a common theme for little boys, Colt’s vintage transportation nursery leaves the typical cars and trucks motif in the dust. After finding the perfect furniture, the Batemans scoured local stores, antique shops and even online vendors from Etsy and Amazon for the perfect accents. Cassie kept the overall feel of the room soft and inviting with gray walls and blue linens, adding awesome transportation artwork from Etsy and frames that she painted and antiqued herself. Cassie’s favorite part of the room is the transportation rug, where she and Colt spend most of their time playing and reading. The room fits well into the Batemans’ old-world style home and is a space where Colt will love for years to come!

#holidayhair&makeup #ifeelgorgeous #babyourself #firsttimefakeeyelashes Your holiday Instagram pic is for sure to get a ton of likes if it includes a headshot. Here’s how to get the perfect holiday pic. BY Amy Marie Rodriguez salon 510 Haley Hunt Castille
yourHAIR Soft curls that can be worn down, pulled to one side, or loosely pinned up for a tousled look.
yourMAKEUP Eyeshadow colors in silver, plum, charcoal, and black. Black liquid eyeliner. Natural looking false lashes to open up the eye, especially when using darker tones on the lid. Mascara (L'oreal Paris Voluminous is a favorite!). Soft pink blush. Rose pink lip color (NYX Mega Shine Gloss is my pick!).
Step by Step & Tips:
#1 Tip for makeup:
Sculpting Foam is a conditioning mousse that gives the hair a foundation to build upon, and can be used when the hair is wet before you blow dry. I also use Root Pump Plus while the hair is wet. It is a spray mousse used to give volume and lift at the root. After the blow dry, I used two working sprays, Super Clean Light and Spray & Play, and comb through the hair.
For those who are not makeup savvy, or prefer a look more natural, the biggest holiday trend going this year is a nude eyeshadow with a pop of color on the lip, such as wine, plum, or red! If using a darker color, be sure to use a lip liner and concealer around the lips to prevent the color from bleeding.
Once product is applied, section out the hair and curl taking 1 in. sections at a time. After the hair is curled, it can be pinned up and set with pins, or it can fall loosely. Do NOT touch or re-curl pieces until hair is completely cool from the curling iron. If the hair is touched while warm, the curl will not hold nor last through the night.
Use brushes! Blend out each color as you apply to have a seamless look. (Bargain buy: Sonia Kashuk Brush Set from Target has all the basics.)
