In the December 2010 issue we mistakenly credited a designer for the amazing nursery design in our Featured Nursery section. The designer was Scot D. Vaughn, Principal Designer with House of Watermark, not Heather Krauklis Interiors. Scot’s painting (the Lichty Family Coat of Arms) was just one component of this amazing nursery design that offers a very custom look. House of Watermark is also available for commercial, residential interior design, re-design and event styling. To see more samples of his work, you can go to www.wix.com/sdvaughn/ houseofwatermarkcom ... or contact Scot at 407.965.6432 for a complimentary consultation.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR My First Mother’s Day - 1999 Ah yes, the days of poofy hair and clear mascara. I can’t believe 12 years have gone by since I entered motherhood and experienced MY first Mother’s Day! I honestly couldn’t remember what we did to celebrate the occasion, until I went back to look through some pictures. Keeping with tradition, we traveled to Iowa to spend the holiday with my mom and family. We always have been a sentimental family, making sure to gather together especially on holidays. One of my most vivid memories growing up involved the buzzing sound of a sewing machine. My mom would sew us all matching dresses, including her own, and we would proudly wear them on Mother’s Day. We would then have our picture taken on the hill beside our house, each of us holding the present that we got Mom. I am so thankful for my mom! I know I gave her grief through my childhood years, however she was such an amazing example of unconditional love. She taught me the importance of family, and to keep your head up, even when times get rough. I love you Mom, Happy Mother’s Day.

We asked on facebook, What is your favorite memory of your MOM? My mom is the hardest worker I know. She worked two jobs at times throughout my childhood to pay the bills, while raising four children as a single parent. My favorite memory of her is the summer she coached my girls softball team. My mom taught me that you have to work hard and not forget to play hard also. She is the strongest person I know! - April, via Facebook My mother was terrified of spiders (and bugs in general), which was pretty bad, seeing as I grew up in FL. One day, there was a spider on the wall. The only thing my mother could find was a can of hairspray, so she sprayed the spider until it was either too stiff to move, or asphyxiated ... not

sure which. The spider remained stuck to the wall until my father came home and removed it. - Tenley, via Facebook My mom used to read and pray us to sleep each night. I remember her sitting on the floor in between the two bedrooms my three sisters and I shared. She’d read a few chapters each night and then would pray until we were all asleep. (I’ll admit, about 30 seconds into her prayers we were all out!) Pilgrim’s Progress, The Lion, Witch & the Wardrobe...It was so unappreciated at the time how she spent her evenings reading to us, but I smile when I remember her voice as she’d read to us! - Elisabeth, via Facebook

babyourself ASK THE DOC
Doctor! I think my water just broke! Dr. April Merritt Delaney OB/GYN
Dr. April Merritt grew up in the Charleston, South Carolina area and attended the College of Charleston where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina and became a Doctor of Medicine in 2004. Dr. Merritt trained in the Orlando Health OB/ GYN Residency Program, graduating in 2008. After graduation, she joined Delaney OB/GYN, a division of Women’s Care Florida. Dr. Merritt is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has a number of published research papers. She also plans to become certified in robotic surgery. Dr. Merritt enjoys writing, scrapbooking, and outdoor activities with her two children.
What do I do if my water breaks? This is one of the most common “oh my goodness” moments for mommies and one of the most common “don’t panic” moments for daddies. Breaking water can occur in several different ways, but the most common is a gush of fluid that soaks your clothes or leaves a puddle behind when you get up. This is a pretty good indicator that you did not just wet yourself. The other way people describe it is “I am constantly wet, more so than usual. I have had to change my pants several times in the last few hours.” Either way, don’t panic. If you don’t have pain or pressure or anything hanging out of your vagina, take a shower and pack a bag and head into the hospital, driving at the speed limit. Nearly 70 percent of women will deliver in 24 hours of broken water. For others it may take a little over 24 hours. It depends on if you’ve had a baby before, when your contractions start and how dilated you are. Please do NOT wait until contractions start to go to the hospital. Some women will not have contractions for over 12 hours after broken water. After 12 hours, it is considered prolonged rupture of membranes and it will require antibiotics at that point in labor. It’s better to get it started before the 12 hour mark.
What about GBS? My doctor says I have it. Should I be worried? GBS is group beta strep. It is a bacteria that some women have in their vagina and others do not. We test you for it at 35-36 weeks of 6
babyourself.com • Spring 2011
pregnancy. If you have it, you get antibiotics in labor as the baby will be at risk for infection with GBS. GBS can make your baby sick, but it is rare. It is rare because we treat you in labor. The bag of water protects the baby and keeps the baby in a sterile environment. Once this breaks, the clock starts ticking. If you have GBS, again, it’s not an emergency to get to the hospital immediately but you want to be there sooner rather than later to get treatment.
I want to labor naturally. Can I do that if my water breaks and I do not have contractions? It depends on what your idea of “natural” labor is. Yes, you can do this whole process without an epidural. You can sit on the birthing ball. You can walk and get into the shower as well. You will need pitocin if you are not laboring on your own, and you will need antibiotics if you have GBS. Broken water does not change your plan. You will still have a baby. It might just change the timeline a bit. Important to know: you can be closed (no dilation) and still break your water. You can be 10cm (the most dilated you can be) and still not break your water. Sometimes you break it on your own; other times it is broken for you. The end result is the same - a beautiful baby in your arms.

Move
by Kimberly Kimmig
of the Month
the LUNGE! The lunge targets the muscles in the upper leg and the glutes. It is a great way to help tone the legs. TIP: For pregnant and newly postpartum moms, stand next to a chair or your stroller and hold only for balance.
Complete this exercise at least 3 times a week and be sure to give your body 24 hours of rest in between. Remember to always warm up before beginning any exercise. Walking for 3-5 minutes is a good way to get the blood flowing to the muscles and prepare them for exercise.
Place the right leg in front and step back with the left leg (your legs should form a triangle). Slowly lower your body straight down as if almost dropping the back knee to the floor. Only go down as far as is comfortable. TIP: Remember during pregnancy, hormones are released that make the joints more lax and prone to injury! Raise back up to starting position and repeat. Complete a set of 10 lunges on the right leg and then switch to left leg forward, and do this two times through. For the more advanced mom, you can turn these in to “walking lunges” in which you will step forward with the right foot and lunge straight down (no leaning forward here), raise back up and step forward with the left foot. Keep this up for 5 steps and then hold for 5 stationary lunges before completing 5 more walking lunges. Repeat this cycle one more time for a total of 40 lunges. For an extra challenge, do the beginner version followed by the advanced version.

Yoga Momma
Ahhh... Breath, stretch, tone, and relax!! It’s time to do some Yoga, Mommas.
Y
oga is a low impact form of exercise that you can do throughout your entire pregnancy and continue to do after you deliver your sweet baby. Yoga can be done in your own home with a workout DVD or in a yoga studio. If it’s your first yoga experience, I would highly advise you to check into finding a yoga studio that specializes in prenatal yoga. It is very important to know which poses you are allowed to do and which poses you should not do during your pregnancy. Prenatal and postnatal yoga have many benefits for mommas. Yoga is a fantastic stress reliever, reducing tension in your muscles and joints. Yoga keeps your growing and changing body more flexible. And keeping those hips and pelvic muscles flexible can really help with labor and delivery. That awful pain that you have been feeling in your lower back, hips, and knees? Yoga can help relieve those aches and pains too. Studies have shown that women who do yoga while pregnant are more prepared physically and mentally for labor and delivery. Yoga teaches you how to breathe and to be calm during labor pains and contractions. As a result. many women who do yoga choose to have natural births.
After the birth of your baby, yoga can help strengthen and tone your entire core area. Your tummy will soon be back to where it was before your pregnancy, and your back can be strengthened to carry your new little baby. Yoga can also help stimulate the pituitary glands, which can be very helpful in producing breast milk for nursing mommas. As you continue yoga, it can help reduce the stress that comes with all the sleepless nights and the demands of being a new momma.
your 1st trimester because lying flat on your back can reduce the flow of blood to the uterus.
5. Remember, if you are not taking a
yoga class specifically for pregnant women, tell the instructor that you are pregnant and she will modify the moves and poses to keep you and your baby safe
6.
Avoid going to a Bikram yoga studio, also known as hot yoga, while you are pregnant. The intense heat in those rooms can be dangerous to the health of you and your baby.
Some women have also said that yoga helped to relieve feelings of postpartum depression. Here are a couple of things to remember while you are doing yoga.:
1.
Consult your doctor before you begin any kind of exercise.
2. Remember to drink lots of water before, during and after yoga.
3. Purchase or borrow a yoga mat. It is a necessity!
4. Avoid the following poses while pregnant: Backbends, balancing poses on one leg (unless supported by a chair or wall), camel, handstands, headstands, and upward bow. Don’t do any asanas poses on your back after

A LITTLE FOR MOM CAN BE GOOD FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY by Megan Smith
I have been thinking a lot about fashion lately. Clothes, hair, beauty products, etc. It began during my pregnancy when I discovered I was in love with Sephora. I had heard of women going bonkers over Sephora stores, but I had never even been to one of them. Overall, I was the type of gal to stick to a basic beauty routine: wash my face, put on moisturizer, brush some bare minerals on and head out the door. That began to change, though, during my pregnancy, when I was feeling frumpy and not too sexy in those maternity jeans and oversized shirts. I really wanted to be one of those hot, sexy pregnant mamas, but I really had no desire to spend money on designer maternity clothes that I would never wear again.
So I turned my attention to skin care. I didn’t do this intentionally, but I began to notice myself meandering for a long time in Sephora or Ulta, reading up on the latest night cream in Marie Claire, and watching late-night QVC when Philosophy products were featured. There was a side of me that found this slightly indulgent and unnecessary, having traveled to remote parts of Third World countries and seeing the most basic standards of living. This part of me rejected the idea of spending extra money on unnecessary things because, well, they really weren’t necessary. But then, I also began to look at things in another way. In fact, it ties in with the idea of “homemaking.” Homemaking for me, or the idea of making a house a home, is not just in the décor I choose for our mantle, the table setting we use when entertaining guests or the meal I make for dinner. It also is in the overall attitude and environment of our home. And frankly, I feel much more energized, engaged and happy when I take care of myself, and that directly correlates with the energy of our home. So I gave myself permission. Permission to think more about fashion and beauty and not feel guilty about it. Permission to take a longer shower and use yummy-smelling soaps and lotions. Permission to spend extra money on a new lipstick or earrings from time to time. Of course, all of this will be done frugally. But it will be done. Not because I “deserve it,” but because my family deserves to have a mother and wife who can feel beautiful daily and bring that level of energy to the home that happens when I put a spritz of perfume on or wear extended-lash mascara.
You need some YOU time!! It refreshes you, revives you, and makes you feel normal again! How do you find YOU time? A pretty bracelet?A new lipstick? babyourself MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL
It’s not until a daughter becomes a mother herself that she realizes just how profound motherhood really is - and all of the sacrifices and love that were poured into her as a child. Pause a moment to consider all that your mom has done for you. by Elisabeth Myrick
Dear Mom, Happy Mother’s Day!
Before we get to the celebration part of this day, I want to get something off my chest. Shortly after becoming a mom myself, I came to realize something. I owe you a HUGE apology. Many of the things I need to apologize for are things I had very little control over; however, I still would like to apologize for them, because really, you deserve it. - I’m sorry I never let you use the bathroom alone or respected any personal boundaries for way too many years. There are some things you really do just need to do alone. - I’m sorry for opening the stall doors in public restrooms before you were finished or loudly asking about some one else’s bodily functions. - I’m sorry you never got to take a bite of food without my immediately running to your side, giving you the “baby bird face,” and asking for some. And while we are on the subject of food, I’m sorry you didn’t get to enjoy a hot meal for far too many months. - I’m sorry I never let you enjoy an entire drink without asking for a sip and for backwashing into it every single time. - I’m sorry for not grasping how wonderful sleep really is, or for not learning to sleep through the night until I was well over a year old. - I’m sorry for pooping immediately after you changed my diaper.

- I’m sorry for making you watch the same movie or television show or listen to the same song over and over and over and over. - I’m sorry for randomly cutting my hair, as well as the hair of my Barbies and other dolls, lying about it, and then hiding the hair in strange places. - I’m sorry for being such a dare devil while learning to crawl, walk, run, and ride a bike and causing you to worry constantly about my every move. - I’m sorry for poking your stomach and asking why it was so squishy. - I’m sorry for borrowing your clothes and ruining them. - I’m sorry for challenging your rules and breaking them countless times. - I’m sorry for never wanting to hang out at home and always choosing to spend time with my friends, rather than you. - I’m sorry for cutting our phone conversations short because I felt like I had more important things to do. - I’m sorry for all the times I talked back or showed you, the one person who loved me more than anything, any disrespect. But through all that, I’m thankful for a lot of things as well. - I’m thankful for all the nights you rocked me back to sleep when I was sick or teething. - I’m thankful for your generosity, even when it likely pained you to have to share your treat for the millionth time. - I’m thankful for all the books you read to me and all the wonderful movies and plays you introduced to me. - I’m thankful for all the borrowed clothes that eventually came to permanently live in my closet. - I’m thankful for all the shuttling back and forth to friends’ houses. - I’m thankful for all the years of piano that you encouraged me to continue, long after I wanted to give up. - I’m thankful for all the years you told me I was beautiful and smart and funny. - I’m thankful for every time you answer the phone, even when it is late at night and well past your bedtime. - I’m thankful for every long trip you made to visit me at college when I was incredibly homesick but too proud to tell you.

But most of all, I’m thankful for all the years of unconditional love and teaching me what it means to be a mother. Love, your daughter

babyourself PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT
The Truth About Cloth Diapering
by Elisabeth Myrick
1. Research, research, research. There are countless different types of cloth diapers and this is likely to be the hardest part of the process – choosing what type of diapers are right for you, your lifestyle and your budget. See the next page for a quick overview of the main types of cloth diapers.
2. Laundry love. Aside from choosing what type of diaper you want to use, the other daunting element of cloth diapering is finding a washing routine that works for you, and a cloth diaper safe detergent. The most basic washing routine for a traditional top-loading washing machine consists of a cold wash and rinse, hot wash and rinse and an extra cold rinse, done every other day. I usually set my washer on the shortest full wash cycle for the first cold rinse and the medium wash cycle for the hot wash and rinse, and turn the knob to the “extra rinse” option to automatically get the final cold rinse. Most cloth diaper manufacturers recommend air drying covers and diapers with PUL outers (the plastic-y outer layer) and drying inserts on a medium heat setting. I air dry my pocket diapers after most washes, and throw them into the dryer once a month or so to “reseal” the PUL (also recommended by most manufacters). Choosing the right detergent is really a matter of preference. There are numerous cloth diaper friendly detergents available from cloth diaper retailers. Many cloth diaper uses also like to use wool dryer balls to help their inserts dry faster, or white vinegar in the final rinse cycle as a natural fabric softener and to help combat the ammonia in your baby’s urine. Both are acceptable and up to your personal preference.

3. Let’s talk numbers. So how many cloth diapers do you need to purchase? To do laundry every other day, you’d need to purchase only 12 diapers. But let’s be honest. Some days you are going to go through more than six diapers. Eighteen diapers is a safe bet and 24 will give you a ton of cushion for travel, heavy wetting, or any other diapering emergency that may arise.

4. Feeling the difference in your wallet and your trash can. Each year there are more than 4 million babies born in the US. Most children remain in diapers for an average of two and a half years, using approximately 5,600 diapers, averaging a little more than 6 diapers a day during those two and a half years. Based on estimated US sales of disposable diapers and the above estimates, diapering those 4 million babies will use 22.4 billion diapers and cost their parents $12 billion dollars. So how does cloth diapering help? Choosing cloth can help families save approximately $2,350 – and that even allows for the purchase of some of the more expensive diapers! If you choose an even simpler option like prefolds, you could save nearly $2,800. This means that if all the babies born in 2011 were cloth diapered from birth to potty training, US families would spend just $2.6 billion, instead of $12 billion.

Cloth diapers first caught my attention long before I was even thinking about getting pregnant. I frequented a message board that encouraged “greener” living, and many of the women there used cloth diapers for their children. I was drawn to the bright colors, bold prints, and to be honest, how adorably fluffy their kids’ bottoms were. The environmental aspect and cost savings? Those were just a bonus. My daughter wore her first cloth diaper when she was two days old. As soon as I snapped that tiny newborn fitted on her and added the brightly colored cover, I was hooked. Eighteen months later, I will be the first to admit I don’t have all the answers. But I have learned a few things along the way, so if you are considering using cloth once your baby arrives, or are contemplating making the switch, read on.

Spring 2011 Fitteds: The name says it all! Fitted diapers are sized based on height and weight, usually ranging from extra small or newborn, to extra large. Fitted diapers are not waterproof and required a cover, but you do have several options including PUL, wool or fleece.
Hybrids: These diapers are a hybrid of reusable, cloth diapers and disposable diapers. They come with a reusable cloth cover and your choice of a biodegradable disposable insert or reusable cloth insert.
All-in-ones: These are the easiest type of cloth diapers to use. They are all one piece, no stuffing of inserts required! All-in-ones consist of a waterproof cover pre-sewn on to the absorbent layers of cotton or fleece. They fasten with either Velcro (hook and loop) or snaps. These diapers are the most similar to disposable diapers.
Pocket diapers: These diapers allow you to individualize the fit, as well as the absorbency, by adding additional inserts to suit your baby’s specific needs. Pocket diapers are sold with inserts, which are usually made of microfiber that you stuff inside the pocket.
Blast From the Past Prefolds: These are what most people think of when they hear the words “cloth diaper”. Prefolds are pieces of cloth that have been folded into layers and sewn into a rectangle. These diapers require the user to fold the diaper to fit your baby and must be fastened with pins or a Snappi, or can be folded in thirds and placed inside a diaper cover. Prefolds are by far the most economical cloth diapers available.
Flats: Truly the old-fashioned cloth diaper, flat diapers are large squares of single-layer fabric, typically birdseye weave cotton. Similar to prefolds, these diapers are folded a variety of ways to achieve the best fit for your baby and require fastening with either pins or a Snappi.
Don’t get me wrong, I realize that buying 24 diapers at approximately $18 apiece is expensive, especially if you are shelling it out all at one. But remember, trust me, cloth diapering does save money in the end. Even with several more expensive, fancy diapers, and having an unusually large stash based on daycare requirements, I still broke even on the investment shortly after my daughter’s first birthday. And what about all those soiled disposable diapers? They have to go somewhere. And based on the above estimates, all those disposable diapers result in more than 2.5 billion tons of untreated fecal matter, urine, plastic and wood pulp being thrown into landfills in the 2.5 years that most children are in diapers. That....is a lot of trash. Modern cloth diapering is a far cry from the old-fashioned cloth diapers your parents may have used. They function more and more like disposable diapers, except they are far more budget-friendly and environmentally friendly! And just think of all those adorable brightly colored baby bottoms! babyourself.com • Spring 2011

In a MOMent “Medic 17, Engine 17, Ladder 16 and Battalion 1, Respond to a 3 car crash, 2255 West Berry Ave, possible victims trapped, one victim with late stage pregnancy.”
A
s a Firefighter/Paramedic for the last 15 years, and father of 4, this is the type of dispatch call that can really get the heart racing. In the role of Medic, a number of different thoughts come rushing in and I begin to formulate my treatment plan as we weave our way through the snarled traffic. “At least the cars couldn’t have been going too fast,” I hope to myself. “Maybe it’s a simple stuck door and not something more serious,” I think. “Is my expectant patient one of the trapped victims?” These are just a few of the questions and thoughts that scroll through my mind as we work our way quickly and safely to the crash scene. At the same time, as a Dad, I remember clearly a similar emergency during my wife’s last pregnancy. A distracted driver drove through a red light and broadsided her vehicle at 65 mph, flipping my wife’s SUV onto the car beside her before pinning her to a telephone pole. At 39 weeks gestation, my wife amazingly kept her composure when she called to say there had been an accident, she was fine, but she was stuck in the car. We had just completed a conversation the week before about the necessity of proper seatbelt placement and appropriate distance from the steering wheel because 22

of her altered physical profile. My wife assured me that she had placed the lap belt low on her belly, resting securely on her hips with the shoulder belt squarely between her breasts. Because her accident was a side impact, the front airbags did not deploy; but the side curtains did come down, protecting her from flying glass and preventing her from striking her head on the door frame. And since she was sitting as far back from the steering wheel as possible to still operate the foot pedals, she did not strike her abdomen on the wheel. Because all late-stage pregnancy trauma requires an immediate evaluation and observation at the closest Emergency Department, I insisted my wife go in for evaluation. Four hours later, with a clean ultrasound and stress test in hand, we all went home to count our blessings. There is nothing like hearing that precious heartbeat to help you sleep soundly following a possible emergency. Now, saying a prayer of thanks in memory of my wife’s accident, I arrive on the scene of our three-car crash. As suspected, due to the time of day and traffic load, the speeds were slow. I check with all the involved victims and find no pregnant women, trapped or otherwise. This is a multi-car, rear ender crash, though, and the driver of the first car is unable to open her back hatch door
to remove her very pregnant English Bulldog, who is scheduled for C-section later today at their local vet! That’s our pregnant trapped victim! Thankfully, “Maddy-girl” was in an appropriate travel kennel and is quickly extricated from the vehicle. A few moments later a ride is found for her to get to the vet where she successfully delivers four beautiful new puppies! From the toughest old firefighter to the newest rookie, we all had feel-good warm fuzzies in our hearts this day. It’s the little things in life that make us smile the biggest sometimes, just as it’s the little things that can have the most positive impact in an emergency. Always wear your seatbelt, even in late stage pregnancy. Keep it as low as possible, snug to the hips and pelvis, with the shoulder belt across the middle of your chest. Be as far back from the steering wheel as you can safely be and still operate the foot pedals. All late-stage pregnancy trauma victims must see an OB GYN for immediate evaluation, even if you feel fine. And if you are transporting a pregnant dog and get into a car crash, take a deep breath and try to let the 911 dispatcher know a few more critical details! -Firefighter/Paramedic Dan Corley

If you’re nursing, spicy food may bother your baby. Start off with a small amount of spicy food, and if you don’t see any major changes in your baby, then you can increase to your desired level. On average (and this is only an average) it takes about 4-6 hours for the food you eat to reach your milk. However, it can be as soon as one hour or take as long as 24 hours.

our favorite things... Summer Infant Sleek & Secure Handheld Color Video Monitor After I bought and returned over half a dozen monitors, my mom purchased this one for me. My husband and I love it. It simply sits on top of our daughter’s crib. The picture is great, and it is extremely easy to move and place anywhere you need it. The handheld is especially nice. The portability is wonderful; it is very small and lightweight. And if you feel you absolutely need it with you at all times, you can even attach it to a belt or piece of clothing. I wish it had been my FIRST monitor purchase. www.summerinfant.com

California Baby Calming Botanical Moisturizing Cream My daughter suffered from extremely dry skin at birth. This cream was a life-saver. It is amazingly smooth to the touch and well worth the price. You will notice a difference as soon as you apply this cream, and a little goes a very long way. My angel is 6 months now and I still use it on her hands, feet and face almost daily even though her skin is no longer dry or peeling. Regardless of the brand, I ALWAYS prefer cream over lotion and that applies to both mommy and baby. www.californiababy.com
Kroma Makeup Botanical Concealer This dreamy creamy concealer is a daily lifesaver! It is a must-have basic for a quick 1-2-3 pick me up. This concealer is a real task-master, providing natural light-weight cover-up for a multitude of skin imperfections. It's delicate enough to tackle dark circles and tough enough to even out your overall skin tone. All natural ingredients are a plus for gals with sensitive skin. If you can splurge on a makeup basic, spend the $37 at this Central Florida based makeup studio. A little goes a long way, so one pot can last for months. www.kromamakeup.com
