P.S. Since our last issue I had an unexpected, unplanned “vacation”. My oldest daughter, Alex, who is 12 years old, underwent a major surgery to remove a mass from her brain with the hopes that it would eliminate her daily, massive seizures. The surgery was a success, however it left her unable to move the right side of her body, walk, and most unexpectedly, talk. We were immediately sent to Jacksonville for four weeks of intense rehab. I am very happy to report that Alex is now walking, talking, moving her right arm, AND she has not had any seizures to report!

P.S.S. Obviously, my schedule came to a screeching halt when I learned that

my daughter would require intense physical therapy. I can’t even tell you how quickly the BABYOURSELF staff came together to assure me this Summer issue would still move forward, and for me to not even worry about it. So thanks go out to all of you and to our creative director, Elisabeth Nixon, “THANK YOU” doesn’t even begin to express my gratitude for all that you have done. Not only for the HOURS that you have invested, but for the peace that you gave me during those months. YOU definitely are in NEED of a well-deserved vacation!

I don’t want to scare any mothers-to-be, but this is a lot harder than I expected. There is a silver lining though... I am so much more amazing than I thought I was! I had no idea what I was truly capable of. - I didn’t know I could love this much... - I didn’t know I could focus on one amazing purpose... - I didn’t know I could be SO tired... - I didn’t know I could still function when I was that tired... - I didn’t know that my family was that unbelivably giving... - I didn’t know that I actually do know enough to be a great Mommy... - ...and I didn’t know that my life was going to change that much, and all for the better. The power of her smile is awesome...in the truest sense of the word. It stops me in my tracks and resets my heart. She is the by far the best, coolest, neatest, sweetest, and most beautiful thing I have ever done. And she has the BEST Daddy ever. Watching him with her melts me...and seeing them together is better than I ever imagined it would be.

babyourself ASK THE DOC

Do I need to drink more water in the summer than usual? What are the signs of dehydration when I’m pregnant? Dr. April Merritt Delaney OB/GYN

Dr. April Merritt grew up in the Charleston, South Carolina area and attended the College of Charleston where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina and became a Doctor of Medicine in 2004. Dr. Merritt trained in the Orlando Health OB/GYN Residency Program, graduating in 2008. After graduation, she joined Delaney OB/ GYN, a division of Women’s Care Florida. Dr. Merritt is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has a number of published research papers. She also plans to become certified in robotic surgery. Dr. Merritt enjoys writing, scrapbooking, and outdoor activities with her two children.

Got a question for Dr. Merritt? Ask away on the Babyourself Facebook page!

Water is so important when you are pregnant. In summertime, it becomes even more important. Your body increases its fluids in pregnancy to support your baby; so when you sweat, you have to replace it. At the beach, you may need to drink twice as much as you would while sitting at home next to the air conditioner. Here are some signs you are dehydrated: 1 - Your urine is brown or dark yellow or you are not making much urine. 2 - Your mouth is really dry – so dry you may even use the word “parched.” 3 - You are contracting. This is a big one! Dehydrated mommies will contract. I often joke that I do not go to theme parks because I see pregnant women there without water and KNOW I will see them in triage later that evening. The best way to solve dehydration is to drink lots of water, especially at the beach or pool. Also, when you come home, you should take a cool shower then sit and drink water. You can alternate water and Gatorade to keep your electrolytes in check too!

after pregnancy but can be annoying during that time. Sunburn is different in pregnancy. If you get a sunburn, you will most likely notice swelling. This will take days or maybe a week to go away. Don’t panic, just expect it to occur and try to prevent it with frequent application of sunscreen. If you do get sunburned, drink lots of water and apply aloe to the area. This will help make you more comfortable. You might also need Benadryl because sunburn can lead to swelling and swelling can cause you to itch. If you get a sunburn severe enough to require medication, you should talk with your doctor. Am I more susceptible to heat stroke when I’m pregnant? I have never personally seen heat stroke in pregnancy. However, you are more susceptible to nearly everything in pregnancy compared to the general population. Heat stroke is no different. So prevent it with lots of water, sunscreen and a really big umbrella.

If you are contracting, sit or lay down, drink water and wait about two hours. If the contractions become more painful or closer together, it could mean labor or preterm labor. In this instance, you should go to the hospital and get checked out. What on earth is happening to my skin when I go into the sun? (Pregnancy mask, etc.) You can burn or tan as you would if you were not pregnant. However, your skin will do some crazy things during pregnancy. Melatonin production increases in pregnancy (thanks to estrogen and progesterone) and this is what causes a darkening of skin. It can happen without sun exposure but can be increased with sun exposure. The most likely areas are across your nose onto your cheeks and around the nipples and down the center of your belly. This will fade anywhere from six weeks to six months

It’s summer! Time to grab your swimsuit and sunscreen and head to the beach or pool. But first, here are some answers to a few common summertime questions.

c i h REALITY c a real mom with real kids & a really messy home by Jennifer Hatcher

Laundry. It’s my kryptonite. At times, my laundry pile has been so high that by the time I get to the bottom, I feel like I just won a whole new wardrobe. You know it’s bad when my kids are putting away clean clothes and one of them exclaims, “Oh, look! I remember this shirt!” But as high as Mt. Laundry is now, it’s a molehill compared to the Mt. Washmore that overtook my bedroom when all my children were little. When I had six children eight and under, my laundry situation was seriously out of control. You’d think with a daughter who wore the same Laura Ingalls prairie dress (and apron and bonnet) every day and a son who wore the same basketball jersey every day and another child who wanted to wear swim trunks every moment of his life, the chore wouldn’t have been so overwhelming. But still, my hamper was constantly overflowing. Ok, ok, my three hampers and two clothesbaskets were constantly overflowing.

ILLUSTR ATED BY JARED THOMAS

The process seemed simple enough. I would sort a big pile of clothes then start carrying them to the washing machine. Along the way, I’d trip over the dog and stop to pick up the toy the baby had thrown from the high-chair.

the machine, (seriously, who knew he could reach the top of the washer?) I would quickly close the lid and start the wash, thankful for that auto-lock feature. But then I would get so busy with homeschooling and playing CandyLand and changing diapers and fishing toothbrushes from the toilet, and I would totally forget about that load of laundry until everyone was tucked in for the night. Then the clothes would smell nasty and sour and need rewashing. And I would be too exhausted to deal with it. So we’d begin the whole process again the next morning. All Superman had to do was leap giant buildings and save the world, yet this Momma has to battle the laundry kryptonite with only a bottle of Tide and some Spray ‘n Wash. Perhaps if Superman had spent less time using his amazing powers to identify the color of Lois Lane’s undies and more time helping wash the load of undies, this world would be a better place.

Dropping the pile of clothes in front of the washing machine, I’d start to search pockets. Inevitably, I’d find a rock, a Hot Wheels, two crayons, old Wal-Mart receipts a child had absconded from the trash, and Luke Skywalker. Then the baby would be screaming for me to pick up his toy again, and the preschool boys would be fighting over possession of the newly found Hot Wheels car. While I was mediating the Great Hot Wheels Debate and using Luke Skywalker as leverage, a sweet helper would have thrown a couple white shirts into the washing machine with the dark clothes. So I’d have to fish those out and pick up the baby’s toy again. Another helper would toss a couple socks over my head and behind the washing machine, where they’d be lost forever (or until we moved). Resuming Operation Pocket Search, I’d discover some quarters, or more likely pennies, that someone had “found” inside my purse. Then, ewwwww, undoubtedly at least one pocket would be stuck shut with some glittery silly putty some kind Sunday School teacher had gifted my children. After dumping the rest of the clothes into the washer and removing the LEGO creation some toddler just tossed into babyourself.com • Summer 2011

Summer Time = Swim Time With the 2012 Olympic Games in London just a little over a year away, the profile of summer sports like swimming is on the rise. Whether you’re anticipating the dynamic return of Michael Phelps or rooting for a home town hero like Sanford’s Logan Mosley to make the US team, the pool is going to be on fire next summer. But you don’t have to wait a whole year to take advantage of the excitement, fun and fitness swimming offers. Local adults and children can enjoy a host of aquatic options this summer and throughout the year. Swimming lessons are an obvious choice for children and adults with little or no swimming experience. From infant lessons that start at six months of age to adult lessons, local pools and instructors offer a variety of services for residents of any age and ability. But, another excellent option for novice and more advanced swimmers is a local summer swim team.

generally run six to 12 weeks (May – August) and are run by local competitive teams, country clubs and municipalities. Instruction focuses on stroke development, as well as racing starts and turns and fees usually include dual meets which offer swimmers the opportunity to experience friendly competition (all swimmers earn ribbons) and learn the importance of sportsmanship. One of the greatest benefits of the summer swim team experience is that it allows children and parents to gain a realistic glimpse into the sport and the commitment competitive swimming entails. While the sport may not require much in the way of overhead, it does require a considerable dedication of time and energy from both parents and swimmers for daily practices, travel to swim meets and cross training. But, the sport’s benefits are truly priceless – swimmers are often high achievers academically and they develop valuable life skills such as time-management, self-discipline and goalsetting, not to mention the outstanding physical and mental health benefits swimming provides.

When your child is ready to transition to a competive swim team, its proximity to home may be an initial concern, but it is also important to consider the coaches’ qualifications and the team’s overall philosophy: -Are six-year-olds required to swim five days a week? -Will swimmers only advance to more challenging practice groups based on their age or are they evaluated on ability? -Do coaches and swimmers take time to celebrate achievements and enjoy periodic fun time? Never be afraid to ask a coach the questions that are most important to you and your swimmer. Of course, with fun and fitness in mind, there is a reason coaches call practice “practice” and not “play time.” Just like learning strokes and turns, children must learn how to practice. As swimmers improve, their coach will ask them to work harder and put forth better effort. This is the only way swimmers can ultimately reach their potential. For kids that are new to competitive sports, at times this can prove challenging and tiring. However, the reality of competitive swimming is that, in order to progress, swimmers must work beyond the “comfort zone.” In the end, the harder swimmers work, the better they get. Swimming can provide you and your child the confidence and skills that can last a lifetime. The next time your son or daughter requests some pool time, consider taking the plunge with your local swim team! Shelley Ouellette is an experienced swimmer and triathlete. She coaches competitive swimming and teaches private lessons for Seminole Aquatics in Sanford. Learn more at seminoleaquatics.org.

Aquatic Fitness for Pregnant Mommas by Angel Feltman

Summer is here! It’s time to dive into a new kind of workout routine that can keep you cool -swimming laps, water jogging, and water aerobics. Check out your local community centers and health clubs for water aerobics classes or other aquatic fitness programs. Or head to your neighborhood or backyard pool. Aquatic fitness is fun, relieves stress, and keeps you fit before, during, and after your pregnancy.

Benefits of aquatic exercise...

16

babyourself

-It’s safe during all three trimesters. -It’s fun and convenient -- exercise with friends or even in your own backyard pool. -It relieves stress and pressure on all your joints and bladder. -You burn twice as many calories in 30 minutes of walking or jogging in chestdeep water than walking or jogging on land.

Things to remember when you begin your aquatic exercise routine... -Always consult with your doctor before beginning any type of exercise program, making sure the form of exercise that you have chosen is safe for you and your baby. -If you have not been active in exercise prior to your pregnancy, begin with a slower pace. Start your workout for 10 minutes 3 days a week, gradually increasing time to 20-30 minutes 3 days a week. -If you have been exercising for a while, you can add water weights to your workout. -If you are uncomfortable swimming laps, use a kickboard or swim noodle to help you. -Drink lots of water before, during, and after your workout. Even though you are in the water, you will still sweat (though it feels better than sweating out of the water). -Wear comfortable bathing suit. If you need more support, wear a sports bra underneath. If you are further along in your pregnancy, you may want to give your belly a little more support with a belly belt. -Most importantly, have fun!

babyourself MOVE OF THE MONTH

Banish the dreaded “Baby Belly”! by Kimberly Kimmig

Baby Boot Comp is a stroller fitness workout for moms. Kimberly Kimmig currently offers classes in the Lake Mary/Sanford/Debary area. Your first class is always free. There is no membership required and the costs of individual classes are very reasonable - plus the added bonus of a personal trainer at all times! Check Kim’s Facebook page for times and locations.

The Problem: During pregnancy the uterus expands and pushes against the abdominal wall. The abdominal wall is made up of three muscles, with the transverse being the innermost. This muscle is often the weakest due to a lack of proper knowledge and training. The bulge that doesn’t seem to go away even after all the baby weight is gone is due to weakness of this muscle. The move: Sit with legs crossed and back pressed up against the wall. Place hands in a triangle with fingers pointed down. As you inhale focus on blowing your belly up like a balloon and letting it expand, then as you exhale pretend someone is pulling your belly button from behind and pulling it to your spine. So as you exhale you flatten your abdominal wall. Repeat this for 2 minutes a day to start. As you progress you can do it several times throughout the day (while driving in the car, sitting in a chair etc).

Diastasis Recti

Tips to keep in mind: Do not begin crunches immediately after your baby is born, you will only worsen the situation. The muscles need time to readjust and slowly strengthen after being stretched out for nine months. Once you have been cleared to begin abdominal exercises keep in mind that as you “crunch” the abs you want to keep them flat and not let them bulge out. Hint: Think “Belly button to spine!”

Kendall’s mom may have a love affair with Etsy.com - but what’s not to love? Clever and unique pieces add a special touch to Kendall’s room. Elisabeth chose a convertible crib and dresser set from Crib4Life in Altamonte Springs that will grow with Kendall to a toddler bed, then a full/double bed. The “Brooke” bedding from Pottery Barn Kids adds to the whimsy of the room, and the owls, which Elisabeth has collected since college, watch over Kendall as she sleeps. The large “K” on the wall Elisabeth made herself from scrapbook paper and a large paper “K”, available from Joann’s. A bit of elbow grease and some Mod Podge, and the “K” was ready to hang!

babyourself DADS TO DADS

ver since I can remember I’ve had a love hate relationship E with my native state of Florida. Why? To be honest I’m not

quite sure. But it always seemed to center around the scorching summer heat, and even though the rising temperatures always brought summer vacation and freedom from school, I still dreaded those 95 degree days. However, I have finally become content with where I live. I have realized that living in Florida does have its advantages. Who doesn’t love loading up the car and heading out to the beach on a beautiful summer’s day or maybe canoeing down the river with my family or changing that stinky diaper at the Central Florida Zoo? Man, I’ve already convinced myself that Florida summers are awesome! I currently have 25 Florida summers under my belt. But number 25 is different because it’s my first summer as “Da-da.” In July, my wife and I will be celebrating our son’s first birthday. Naturally, a birthday is conjoined with a birthday celebration and if I know my wife, this party might rival the royal wedding (but let’s hope not in cost!). July 19 won’t be just a plain old birthday either. No, this day will mark the one year celebration of a great accomplishment. Not only will we celebrate the fact that one year ago we were blessed with a beautiful healthy baby boy, but we will also

celebrate the fact that we are competent and capable of caring for another human life for at least a year. Now I say that jokingly, of course, but also with a serious tone. Any parent knows that caring for a child is not an easy task. As a father and husband who has had the opportunity to experience the role of Stay At Home Dad, I can, with authority, say it’s not easy at all! Most husbands would quickly agree with that statement but, really, mull it over for a moment. I quickly realized that I severely underestimated my ability to multi-task. Caring for a child day in and day out is draining on so many different levels, and I only have one kid! Chewing gum and walking require immense amounts of mental concentration in my case and I’m sure other men out there can relate with me on that one. Multi-tasking with children and all those other things that Super Moms do are a lot more difficult than most men think. Flipping through the sports channels while eating mixed nuts and whistling does not constitute the art of multi-tasking. So all you husbands and fathers out there give a shout-out to those special women who your children call Mom, because they are awesome and they need to be reminded of that. The year has been filled with ups and downs but the joy of having our son has made the “downs” pale in comparison to all the “ups”. Our hearts skip a beat with each new accomplished milestone and our hearts sink with each boo-boo. We’ve gone from our son lying perfectly still within a swaddle to rolling over then rolling over, turned to belly scooting, bellying scooting turned to crawling, and - in our son’s case - we will probably skip walking and go straight to running. This birthday will mark the day when our world changed so much. It’s hard to imagine that all this love and joy has been packed into just one short year. My son’s summer birth has taught me to be content with where I call home. I know now when I feel that summer heat approaching, I can celebrate that another year as “Da-da”. This July when my son raises that one sticky, icing covered finger in the air, I’ll raise mine with him and we will celebrate our first year of life together and pray for more.

Place the salmon on top and sprinkle with pistachios. Drizzle with dressing.

Pineapple Dijon Dressing 3 tablespoons pineapple juice ½ lime 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons olive oil A pinch of salt In a blender, mix pineapple juice, mustard, and salt together. babyourself HUMOR

why am I doing this?

Tell me again...

by Kim Daniels

Do you ever find yourself wondering “Why am I doing this?” You know, when it feels like all you do is change poopie diapers, wipe snotty noses, and clean the results of bodily functions off tiny clothes? Or maybe it’s when you’re cleaning the large puddle of juice that “accidentally” got spilled on your freshly mopped floor. Again. Lest you think it’s only you that “those days” happen to, let me share with you my most memorable. I was cleaning the kitchen while my 10-month-old played with toys on the floor nearby. Suddenly, I heard him gagging on something. Wait a minute, what could he have in his mouth? I was careful not to leave anything small lying around, and he certainly didn’t have food within his reach. So I snatched him up off the floor to discover that his diaper had failed, allowing some of the aforementioned poopie to escape. Now, my child was one of those blessed creatures who loved food and never turned his nose up at anything. That wonderful trait did us a disservice in this situation. Yes, he was eating what fell out of his diaper. As I tried to save my gagging child by scraping the foulness from his mouth, he felt the need to assist me in the effort. Unfortunately, his attempts resulted in disgustingly messy hands, which he then smeared all over my shirt. At this point the smell completely overwhelmed me, and I began to gag too. Grateful that my husband worked close to home, I immediately ran to the phone and called him. My poor unsuspecting husband answered his phone to hear me yell, “I need you to come home! Your son is eating his own poop!!!” You certainly must notice that as of that moment, I claimed no genetic link to this child. He was, at that point, only my husband’s son. So this brings us back to our original question. Why am I doing this? Surely there are more fun ways to fill my days. There are certainly more sanitary ways. Why put myself through this? Well, fast forward a decade and not only are there two more boys, but plenty more days to compete with the story above. And yet I wouldn’t give it all up for the world. I often explain parenthood as a race that is the length of a marathon with the pace of a sprint, but even still, I love it. My boys are getting older; and now that I get more sleep and can 24

think somewhat clearly, I remember the inexpressible joy of holding my tiny babies, of coaxing those precious first smiles, of those early baths in the plastic molded tub. And I have memories of each individual personality starting to come out and wondering whom these little people would become. I treasure so many sweet memories throughout the years, and they far outweigh those frustrating and difficult days. Now that my boys are maturing, and little by little are becoming the young men they’re meant to be, I can see all the hard work starting to pay off. I still have bad days and messes and frustrations, but I also have days when the boys hug me and say, “I love you, Mom.” And I have stacks of pictures they’ve drawn for me and notes they’ve written to me that say “Thank you for being my mom.” But even in moments when I don’t recognize that progress, and even when they don’t seem to be going the right direction toward maturity, they’re still gifts to treasure. And these young men have been entrusted to me. So why am I doing this? Because they’re worth it.
