Rough Guide Building Blitz 2010 9th Building Blitz - Cape Town 2010
A Message from Niall I would like to welcome every one of you onto this our 9th Building Blitz. I am especially proud to welcome back our returning veterans and to welcome on board our new volunteers. This is once again going to be a great trip and truly, is only possible because of each of you. It seems a long time since the beginning of my own journey to build a few homes for shack dwellers in Cape Town in 2002. What I had started then, became better and more achievable when volunteers came to help. Year after year many of you have returned and new faces have joined in working towards what is now “Our Mission”. Years later Nelson Mandela would talk to me as to how impressed he was about the special nature of Irish people and how much it meant to him to watch the Irish volunteers return to help build decent homes for his fellow South Africans. He mentored me one time about the power of the collective and how “everything is possible through the collective effort of people‘“and each one of you, and our 13,000 volunteers are living proof of this. We have together housed 80,000 people. We have done this by uniting together for a joint purpose, with all our lives enriched through common effort. Putting a proper roof over a child’s head has been a priceless privilege for all of us. I thank all of you once again for your part in making so much possible. We build all year round, but every year this week is the highlight of the charity’s year. I know you have made many sacrifices and fundraised very hard to get here and on my own behalf and all my staff’s behalf I sincerely thank each of you for this . Over the last 8 years 13,000 volunteers (6,500 Irish) have helped us to make a real difference in each of the communities we have worked. South Africans are now volunteering in significant numbers and this year alone we will have had over 3,000 proud South African volunteers working with us. Our volunteers from previous years have inspired South Africans to get involved. I welcome volunteers coming from England, Wales, the USA, Australia, Belgium and Gabon. When I see our houses emerge from the dust I recall the faces of all our volunteers who worked so hard to build them and it fills me with such pride to remember your effort. Despite all our challenges at home I am adamant that we must push forward and strive to reach our next milestone. By the end of next year I want to bring our overall total of people housed to 100,000, we can only do this together.
Niall Mellon

Shacks to Homes Our journey over the last 9 years...
In the 9 years since the charity began, we are very proud that over 80,000 people have been housed. This remarkable achievement is thanks to all the hard work our volunteers and staff have put in over this time. 15,000 houses have been built and these houses mean a complete change in lifestyle for the families living there. Not only do they now have a roof over their heads, but a secure home, long term health benefits and a safe place in which the children can grow in. We have very exciting times ahead. Next year is our 10th anniversary and we have set ambitious targets by trying to make it 100,000 people housed by the end of our 10th Building Blitz in November 2011.
Meet the Families
This year we plan on housing over 140 families. Below are two families who are moving from a shack to a home, this small synopsis will give you an insight into how hard a struggle life is in a shack….
Bongiwe Marongo, Beneficiary, 2010
Bongiwe will be receiving a house during the Building Blitz in November. I am 36 years old, unemployed and living in Wallacedene. I am married with 4 children and I have been living in a shack for the past 12 years. I earn a small amount of money by selling sheep heads (‘smiley’s’) to my local community. Life in a shack is hard, it is always damp during the Winter months and this has affected the health of my family. I don’t ever feel safe living in a shack especially at night as my shack is not secure and I worry for my family. I never would have been able to afford a proper house and I am so thankful to be receiving my very own house keys in November. I cannot wait to move into my new home and I am really looking forward to seeing the Irish volunteers arrive. I do believe that living in my new home will change my life forever.
Lindiwe Ndyamboti, Beneficiary, 2010
Lindiwe will be receiving a house during the 2010 Building Blitz and is so excited at the prospect of moving into her own proper home. My name is Lindiwe, I am 42 years old and I live in a one bedroom shack with my two children and three other relatives. I have been living in a shack for the past 14 years. My shack leaks when it is raining and it is also incredibly hot during the Summer months. The corrugated iron roof flaps when the wind blows and this noise is so loud, often I wouldn’t sleep for fear it would blow away and the noise often keeps the whole family awake on windy nights.

Nov 2010 Blitz | Project 1177 3 | Wallacedene | Charity News When I move into my new home this November I will be sleeping in my own ‘proper house’ for the very first time. I will no longer have to walk to use the public toilet (which is often blocked) and I will be able to wash myself without having to use a bucket. I am so excited about my new home and more importantly my family have a brighter future to look forward to.
Life in a New House Alfred Mjangaza (‘Oupa’) received a house during the 2009 Building Blitz in Wallacedene. I am 64 years old and I live with my wife, Trifina and our two children. We have been living in a shack in Wallacedene for 8 years prior to receiving a house last November. You cannot imagine how living in a house has completely changed my life and the lives of my family. Life in a shack was a constant struggle. Due to the damp conditions our family suffered with constant chest infections. It is unsafe to live in a shack and I constantly worried for my family and their safety. Living in a house has now brought about a much healthier and safer lifestyle for my family. We no longer have to walk to use a public toilet as we now have our own bathroom. My daughter Siphokazi, is also doing better at school as she finally has a proper place to study. I am so grateful to the Irish because now we finally have a beautiful safe house to call home. Thank You.
Ilse Williams, received a house during the 2009 Building Blitz in Wallacedene. I live with my husband Gerald and our three children in one of the Blitz houses that was completed during the 2009 Building Blitz. I was so overjoyed to finally have a proper house of my own after spending many years living in a shack. It’s hard to imagine that I will no longer be kept awake at night worrying about flooding or the threat of fire. We are also feeling much safer now that we have solid walls, burglar bars and a lockable door, for this I am so graetful. I must admit that my children are now much healthier since they have moved into our home. My husband and I now have our own privacy unlike in the past when we all lived on top of one another. The biggest change for me is the fact that we now have running water and our own toilet. I can’t wait to see the Irish volunteers once again in November 2010. Thank You.

Nov 2010 Blitz | Project 1177 3 | Wallacedene | Charity News Daniel and Christine Wagenaar’s story After 12 years of waiting our dream has come true. When we moved in we had nothing but we were blessed because now we have everything! This house is a gift from God and we are very happy to be on our own in our own home. Thank you.
Alice Buka, received a house during the 2005 Building Blitz in Imizamo Yethu Five years ago, Alice and Cecil finally moved into their own home at 24144 Labohemie Street, Wallacedene. “My life is now indescribably different to that of living in a shack” Alice Buka is a separated mother with one son. She is 55 years old. Her son Cecil Buka is 22 years old and is mentally challenged. Alice recall’s how difficult life was whilst living in a shack as she had no financial support or physical assistance with the shack structure. As she could not physically secure a roof on her shack, the top was covered with a tarpaulin sheet. In winter she and Cecil suffered with a constantly wet shack and ill health. But since moving to a house her life has changed dramatically. Every time I put my key in the front door I am so grateful for a roof over my head.
Sophie Morris, received a house during the 2004 Building Blitz in Imizamo Yethu Getting a brick house changed my whole life. I knew my children would be safe; having a house made me very proud. I lived in a shack for 14 years in the township of Imizamo Yethu, this was the first township the Niall Mellon Township Trust built houses in. When I lived in a shack I had no running water, bath or shower and the toilet was outside, you cannot imagine how difficult this was. The worst thing happened in 2004 my shack burnt down, we lost everything and had no money to replace it. This was a very bad time for me. Since I received the keys to my own house it has been life changing. My children are now safe and I have set up a small business from my house minding other people’s children.
Skills Development The charity initiated a Skills Training Programme in 2009. Our skills training programme includes training in plumbing, bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, painting, roofing and electrical. For many long-term unemployed people living in townships where unemployment rates are over 50%, it is a huge opportunity to take part in a training programme and learn a new skill and hopefully obtain a job. Your efforts and fundraising has helped us to provide training courses for 200 people since 2009.

Zelda Adams – Graduate of Skills Development Programme. Zelda Adam’s lives in Paarl with her two children and mother. Walking past one of the charity’s building sites she noticed a group of people painting the newly built houses. She asked about the possibility of working for the charity and within days she found herself employed with a paint brush in her hand! Zelda along with 11 other women completed a painting training course which includes a life skills component during September 2009 with the charity. “I learnt a lot and the training is definitely going to help me! I will have more employment opportunities and can provide a better future for my family.” Zelda Adams

Look what you have inspired! SOUTH AFRICAN BLITZ 2010 3079 Volunteers 25 Blitzes
You are truly inspirational, thanks to your energy and enthusiasm you have inspired over 3000 South Africans to be part of this journey. This year we set an ambitious target to recruit 2000 South African volunteers to participate in our South African Blitzes, we are delighted to announce that we exceeded our target and 3079 volunteers took part in 25 Blitzes this year, our last Blitz will take place on the 29th December 2010.
Corporate Groups:
We have had 24 individual corporate groups as part of their Corporate Social Responsibilty programme take part in our Building Blitzes this year. Oracle International, UCT Engineering Dept, Metropolitan Health Group, Rhema (1st),National Prosecuting Authority, Saint Gobain, Exceed IT Solutions, Old Mutual, SAB, Beekman CC, Umvoto, Oxion Consultants, Pragma, Translux, Huisamen, Westraadt Inc, MLCCT, First Contact, Oricon Van Der Sluys Structural Engineers, WSP Coastal Engineers, Allan Gray, Tenk Loubser Engineers, UCT Engineering Dept, Round Table Switzerland, Cambridge University, Standard Bank, Cargill International, Future Growth Investments, WBHO Construction, Southern Sun International and USA International Corporate
Oracle Team, Gauteng
University Groups:
We have had groups from Tsiba, University of Cape Town, University of South Africa and Cambridge University take part in out Building Blitzes this year. A quote from a South African volunteer who participated on a Blitz this year and was very moved by the work of the charity. Thami Mngoma, volunteered on site with his company Oracle. He commented, “As a South African I feel humbled by the founder of this initiative especially given the fact that growing up in rural Kwa-Zulu we were taught that this is exactly how our ancestors built their homesteads and ploughed their fields – all neighbours coming together to build from one house to the next and from one field to the next hence “umuntu – ngumuntu ngabantu” to loosely translate a human is a human by other humans. To be reminded of that by the Irish people who volunteer here clearly shows that human consciousness is one and we are all connected”.

Pick n Pay is a leading South African food retailer, for decades they have always shared their success and we are very proud to announce that they have very generously donated a tree for every house we build in Wallacdene. We hope their example will inspire other local donations
The Year in Brief...
It has been an exciting year for the charity through various achievements, awards and inspirational fundraising ideas by volunteers from both Ireland and South Africa. Read below and get a quick insight into some of the many activities that have been going on.
March 2010: Minister Visits Mellon project
In March of this year Peter Power TD, Minister of State for Overseas Development at the Department of Foreign Affairs visited the Niall Mellon Township Trust project in Wallacedene. The Minister was greeted by local community leaders, school management committees and residents. Residents explained to the Minister their life changing experiences of moving from a shack to a house.
April 2010: Blitz: 150 Volunteers
150 South African volunteers followed in Irish footsteps and participated on a build in Wallacedene. The volunteers were made up of different groups from around Cape Town including UCT, Standford and Tsiba students and 1st Contact Accountants.
July 2010: Washington
A delegation from Ireland and South Africa travelled to Washington on a congressional visit to push forward future funding of the Trust from US legislatives.
August 2010: The Longford Marathon
One of our veteran volunteers, Liam Fenelon had the fantastic idea of organising the Longford Marathon in aid of the Niall Mellon Township Trust. Despite having his own funds raised, he was instrumental in helping volunteers from Longford, Roscommon and Cavan raise their funds. 70 volunteers got their training gear on to pound the streets of Longford. A large amount was raised which helped these volunteers greatly. Indeed for anyone wishing to join in the fun next year, Liam and his daughter Sharon are already in the planning stages of the event.
September 2010: “On yer bike”
Another determined volunteer Alan Clancy, trained for 6 weeks in preparation for his 220km cycle from Maynooth to Galway. In cycle time he completed it in just over 8 hours (not including the pit stops!). This fantastic achievement allowed Alan to raise the majority of his fundraising goal.

The Volunteers We have some truly amazing volunteers who travel with us year after year. Without you our journey would not be possible. As much as we would love to publish every story we hear, we cannot. Here are some volunteer stories we would like to share with you.
Pete Agoma - First time Volunteer We moved back to Ireland in 2004 where I work in civil engineering. I was born in Port-Gentil, Gabon and in early 1990 I moved to America where I met my Irish wife Roisin. When I heard about the Niall Mellon Township Trust I became very interested in what the charity was doing in South Africa and I thought about becoming a volunteer. In 2010 while talking about charity work and other ways of giving something back, the Niall Mellon Township Trust came to mind once again. I have a personal attachment to the area and can relate to how people live in poor conditions. After signing up I joined the Meath Volunteer Club who played a pivotal role in my fundraising and through their support and my many bag packing initiatives I was able to raise the funds to go on the trip. This was not an easy task but I think when you have strong will and determination, anything is possible! I am really looking forward to being part of the team of Irish volunteers who are improving the lives of the communities in South Africa. Looking at the way these communities are struggling with social issues, makes me realise how fortunate I am to live the way I do. I will continue to give back and I hope to inspire other people to volunteer including people from African origin living in Ireland.
Mary Kelly - Three year Veteran Volunteer The charity Building Blitz is now the highlight of my year and I am very proud to be earning my 3rd stripe on this year’s trip. This is largely due to the help and support of a large family and friend network and each year I run an event to help raise my sponsorship. This year I had 120 people attend a table quiz and I got a hole in one at a golf event all of which not only helped raise funds but became great social occasions. The pride and sense of achievement that you feel at the end of the week is something that will always stay with you. To see the faces of the family when they move into their first home, with a door they can lock and a proper roof over their heads and to know that you helped that to happen is the reason we keep returning. I was a Team Leader both times last year which was a great experience. This year I will be a labourer as I have my sister and niece from Pennsylvania, USA and my sister from Devon all joining me. I’m really looking forward to sharing this special week with them, who knows maybe they will become veterans like myself!

Volunteers Fundraisers With nearly 750 volunteers going on this year’s blitz, there were many whacky and wonderful fundraising events. The two below will give you a flavour of what was going on around the county.
The Moatrix Fest: Stuart Clifford, Zara Malone and Damien Claffey, 1st year volunteers. The Moatrix Fest was a 2 day outdoor music and family festival. Patrons were treated to excellent live music, BBQ, bar, and pig on a spit, while the face painted children enjoyed the inflatable garden. This was the second year of the Moatrix Fest, the sun was shining which helped with the great atmosphere of the event. Hogan and Ka Tet headlined the Moate gig a fabulous original act which has rubbed shoulders with appearances next to Westlife and Jedward! The team raised the bulk of their fundraising from the event which attracted up to 1,000 people. The event was well organised and capitalised on their audience selling branded Moatrix t-shirts with the names of all the 16 acts on the back.
Rock ‘N’ Roll Bingo: Fiona Rooney, 1st year volunteer. I heard about Rock ‘N’ Roll Bingo through a DJ from my hometown of Sligo. It’s a really addictive, fun version of normal bingo where you replace the numbers with songs. When the DJ starts playing, listen out and mark the songs you hear off your bingo cards. If you manage to get either a full line or a full house you win a prize! It helps if you know the name of the songs you hear! It turned out to be a fantastic fundraising night. Everyone was really supportive and bought loads of bingo cards, which in turn meant that we all got really addicted to the game! All in all I was hugely happy with my fundraising night and I would reccommend Rock ‘N’ Roll Bingo to everyone!

Tips for a better week 1. Heat. 20 mins in the boiling sun can leave you with burns bad enough to keep you in bed for a week. You need to keep applying and re-applying your suncream regularly. Drink lots of fluids and take some oral rehydration salts. 2. Pace yourself. We have said it already but please remember it is a long week so please work within your own fitness level. 3. This is a serious mission and people’s lives depend on us staying focused until the end of the week. Celebrate when the job is done. The charity has a very strict policy in relation to alcohol consumption. You will not be allowed on site if the charity has reason to believe you are still under the effects of alcohol or any other substance. You are not only a danger to yourself but also to those around you. Yellow cards are issued to those who do not adhere to our guidelines. Two yellow cards and you will be sent home. 4. Teamwork. If you are a tradesperson please make allowances for those that are not. 5. Don’t over react to minor inconveniences. It is a hard week and life changing for both you and the families you are housing. 6. Please be safety conscious at all times. In the past most accidents have occurred in the first hour on site and the last hour of the week. Please be safety aware at all times and be mindful of those around you.

Education & Development
_____________________________________________________________________ Rough Guide ______________________________________________________________________ 1 35
Nov 2010 Blitz | Project 1177 3 | Wallacedene | Educational Development Education is an integral part of the volunteer experience. It is important that you understand your role as an overseas volunteer and the positive effects you can have in alleviating poverty. When travelling to a developing country, it is crucial that volunteers are aware of the country’s cultural context. We aim to provide our volunteers with the opportunity to learn more about the people we are working with, to gain a greater understanding of the issues affecting the people in the townships as well as South Africa as a whole. We believe that all of our volunteers have a role to play in affecting positive change, to help shape the landscape of the future. It is a privilege to be able to learn about the community you are working with and their way of life.
Our South African Development Team
Our South African Development Team is headed up by our Director of Development, Crystal West. Our Development Team are the primary link to the beneficiary communities. Our Development Team ensure that the organisation provides facilitative support to our partner communities, giving them the practical support they need to improve their lives and that of the community. The emphasis is placed on partnering with specialist organisations to afford beneficiaries and community staff the opportunity to complete registered and accredited skills training programmes in construction trades and further income generation by specific training programmes.
Development Education on the week of the Blitz
The Development Team will be responsible for organizing educational visits for volunteers during the Blitz. Use your time wisely and ask lots of questions. Understanding is an essential ingredient in assisting the community you are working with.
Shack Invitation
This is definitely one of the highlights of your week, and an absolute must. Seeing a shack on the outside is one thing, seeing inside is a whole other level of insight. As a volunteer you will be made especially welcome by the families living in these shacks. The community of the township have selected a number of families who are proud to open their doors for you to come and see how they manage to live inside these shacks.
Creche Visit
You will probably be surprised to know there are creches in townships . Working parents have the same needs everywhere however the conditions of these creches are very basic and this visit (one hour round trip) is a really worthwhile experience.

Amawele
We are delighted to introduce another Irish charity working in the same township of Wallacdene. Based in South Africa and Ireland they are called Amawele. The Niall Mellon Township Trust fully supports the aims and objective of Amawele which is to create partnerships between schools in Ireland with schools in South Africa. Amawele was founded in 2007 by a group of Irish business people. The word “Amawele” comes from the Xhosa word for ‘twins’, Xhosa being the home language of Nelson Mandela and one of 13 official languages in South Africa. An Amawele link offers students and teachers the opportunity to share information, skills and projects. It encourages pupils to express and share their views and their vision about themselves and the wider world. Amawele is involved in providing the building blocks for a young person’s future through working to provide a better education. Nelson Mandela said that, “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world”. Young people need a safe home environment and an education – both NMTT and Amawele are working together to provide this for the people of Wallacedene. The Wallacedene schools have partnered with schools in the South Hill area of Limerick city. During the Blitz week Amawele will be using Skype to allow pupils and teachers link up to a part in a ‘virtual book club’ where they will both discuss a book based on the life of Nelson Mandela. We are pleased to incorporate them into our brochure as a gesture of support to continue their great work and wish them well for the future. If you would like to involve a school in your area in the Amawele School Twinning project find out more at www.amawele.org
The children of Wallacdene invite you to an evening of song and dance
Four schools within Wallacdene (all partnered with Amawele ) have come together to put on a one hour performance to welcome and thank our volunteers for their involvement in the Wallacedene community. The concert will take place on Thursday 18th from 17.00hrs to 18.00hrs. The concert will also celebrate their ongoing link with schools in South Hill, Limerick. The schools performing are Bloekombos Primary School, Imvumelwano Primary School, Enkululekweni Primary School and Wallacedene secondary school. Last year these schools received visits from Irish volunteers and benefited tremendously from their generosity. This year through the concert the schools will showcase a variety of talent to entertain our volunteers. Members of the community and parents of these children are also invited. This short experience takes place straight after work on Thursday 18th on site.

Community Development Initiative 2010
This year our gardening team will be working on greening and restoration projects at a creche and a secondary school in Wallacedene. These sites were chosen through a participatory process whereby creches and schools in the Wallacedene area were asked to put forward proposals as to the projects they would like to have done at their schools. These proposals were assessed together with NMTT’s capacity and the resources that were available. After much deliberation two sites were chosen:
Wallacedene Secondary School
Wallacedene Secondary School is a prominent high school in the Kraaifontein community and has just been relocated in new buildings provided by the Education Department (July 2010). This is a huge change for this school which has been previously operating out of dilapidated mobile classrooms with no area for activities such as practical work, science laboratories, sports grounds, etc. The school accommodates roughly 850 learners, 24 teaching staff and 10 non-teaching staff. The school set up a Building Blitz project committee that has developed plans together with the Niall Mellon Township Trust. These plans will have volunteers creating a vegetable garden, chill out areas for the students, artwork for the hall and also painting initiatives which will give the school a new identity in their brand new surroundings. The school caretaker will be directly involved during the Building Blitz to ensure that the work being done will be maintained by the school.
Masakhane Educare
Masakhane Educare was the first creche to be established in Wallacedene in 1992. It is easily one of the largest educare centres in the community with 180 children currently registered at the crèche (although the actual figure attending each day is closer to 200). Niall Mellon Township Trust has worked closely with the management team at the creche to identify the needs of the centre. Volunteers will be giving the crèche a complete face-lift by painting the crèche building and the perimeter walls. The children’s playing equipment will also be restored together with the creation of a sand pit. The creche’s existing vegetable garden will be enhanced and the main entrance gate will also be fixed.

Donations Our Donations Policy
Our donations policy is based on the past experiences of Niall Mellon Township Trust staff and the feedback given by volunteers from previous Building Blitzes. We want to ensure that gifts are given in an appropriate manner and distributed fairly. Every year we are asked by our volunteers about giving donations and gifts to the communities we work with. We would like to emphasise that you do not have to donate as you have already worked very hard to fundraise to come on the Blitz and we are very greatful for all your fundraising to date.
Donations On Site
We would ask that you do not give out any gifts or donations directly to individuals on site or in the schools. This can have quite negative implications. For example, it can contribute substantially to a culture of dependency in the communities. Additionally there are safety issues to consider when bringing and distributing donations on site for both volunteers and recipients. Please try to keep in mind that crime is a huge issue in the townships. In the case of giving confectionary items to children please be mindful that some parents may not want their children to recieve sweets from volunteers. We want to limit any negative repercussions that the Building Blitz can have on the communities and instead ensure an optimal effect. In light of this, donations need to be managed properly by our staff to ensure that they are distributed fairly. Our staff will know where the greatest need is and where your donation will have the greatest benefit.

How do I make a donation?
There will be two donation days on site during the Blitz week - Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th. Any physical items you wish to donate, please bring them to your Team House on either of these two days, during which a member of our staff will collect any donations. If you have an queries regarding donations please consult your Team Leader. For all the schools and beneficiary families we visit throughout the week our development facilitators will put together a specific donation/gift basket as a thank you. Each basket will have a variety of items to suit the needs to the beneficiary family.
Recommended Gifts
Stationary, educational toys, toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, face cloths, white school shirts and baby clothes.

Useful Information Money Matters
The local currency is the South African Rand (commonly known as ZAR) €1.00 EUR = 10. ZAR. To convert South African prices into Euro prices divide the Rand price by 10. For example R 60 is the equivalent of €6.00 and R 5 is the equivalent of €0.50. Currency will be available for exchange at each hotel and ATM machines accept cost international cards. Most big shops and restaurants will accept credit cards. Please be watchful when using ATM cards if using them in shops or restaurants do not let them let them out of your sight. Card skimming is a common problem which is on the increase, so please be careful. Tipping: A tip of 10% in restaurants is acceptable and if porters carry your bag they will expect a tip of between R5 and R10 per bag. However we have previously suggested due to time constraints you look after your own baggage in the hotel.
Phone Calls
Making and receiving incoming phone calls are charged at €1.70 per minute. Outgoing calls are charged at €1.30 per minute. Text messages charged at roughly 50 cent per message. Hotel Phone Please note that hotel rates can be very expensive. Calls from your hotel room to Ireland is charged at R 20 (€2.00) per min. Calls from your hotel room to a local mobile number at R 8 (€0.80) per min. *We Recommend You* Purchase a SIM card and credit for the week upon arrival in South Africa. SIM cards only cost R 39 (€3.90) which includes R 25 talk time. International text message is R 1.75 (€0.18). International call is R 10 (€1.00) per minute. SIM cards can be purchased from the V&A Waterfront which is a very quick taxi ride away. Taxi’s From Waterfront Hotel to The V&A Waterfront Shopping Centre is R25/30.
