£175m for Mayflower celebration A huge investment of £175 million is being earmarked to prepare Plymouth for the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020. The figure was revealed as more details of the celebrations were announced by Plymouth City Council. Plans include a Mayflower National Trail, connecting 11 destinations across Britain, a 'Mayflower Muster' week in September 2020, an 'Illuminate' community and art festival of light and the opening of 'The Box' - the £37 million attraction, gallery and museum complex which will become the city's cultural centre. With the countdown to the global celebrations now well under way, Tourism Minister John Glen recently visited the city to meet members of the Mayflower 400 team. John Glen, said: “Mayflower 400 is a wonderful project that will not only celebrate centuries of shared history between the UK and US but also help promote Plymouth to the world." It is estimated that the global celebrations will attract an additional 500,000 visitors to the city in 2020, creating an additional economic impact of £18 million and create hundreds of new jobs. Tourism supports over 7,000 jobs in Plymouth and brings over £316 million into the local economy annually.

The Stoke STARS Annual Summer Fair this year owes a debt of huge gratitude to local businesses, writes Karen Pilkington.

Not only did the Co-op sponsor the event, they also organised a stall and stood proudly in rain and sunshine, contributing to the feel-good atmosphere of the fair that remained undampened despite the changeable weather. Thanks must also go to Palladium Building Supplies for donating sand and soil to help level out the football pitch, and to Lush and Tiger, both in the Drakes Circus Shopping Mall for generous donations to help deck out the toilet block and the community centre in the park, transforming both buildings with a bit of festive gaiety. Local businesses also entered into the community spirit – Victoria’s Second Hand Furniture produced beautifully hand painted furniture, and the Flower Fayre provided some lovely planters to stage the area outside the toilet block; and many local businesses including Il Pezzettino, Dudes Barbers, Eclectic at Home and Stoke Fish and Chips provided raffle prizes. The Stoke Inn gave away free squash to youngsters, and even ran out of Pimms, such was the demand from thirsty adults! Pat and John Kinsman from the Stoke Community Centre cooked up so many burgers then had to get in more supplies – twice! Stoke Christian Centre supplied flowers, tables and indispensable man power on the day. Live music, football, community keep fit and history walks all teamed up with market stalls to ensure there was plenty to do at the fair whatever the weather. The Gables Cat and Dogs Home, ably assisted by Natalie Cornah from Spotlight provided such fun for dogs and their owners that almost every puppy won a prize. Rev Tim Buckley blessed the World War Two mural – a tribute to the role the park played during the Blitz; Archery

Staff from Stoke Co-op were kept busy at the fair

Assault introduced lots of us, old and young, to a great new sport, and Fizz Fitness inspired us to exercise in the great outdoors. Stoke Damerel Community College provided a fantastic event for budding soccer stars, and a large marquee kept revellers dry whilst listening to some stonking sets from bands including Fades, Russel Sinclair and Blasé Blues. Junk band, Sounds of Scrap from the Plymouth Scrapstore, fronted by Alex Noisemaker, kept the beat alive throughout the day as well. Local MP Luke Pollard came along and joined in everything from toilet cleaning to stall erecting. And finally our wonderful local councillors were not only seen helping out at stalls, but also significantly contributed to funds to support the event. Thanks go to Councillor Sam

Davey and Councillor Mike Sparling. Steve Bowen, Chair of STARS was overjoyed at the event. “It was a huge turn-out despite the patchy weather and heart-warming to see a sense of community back in the village after a long absence. We will use this as the building block for next year’s event, which is promising to be even bigger and better already, given the level of interest already shown by other organisations impressed with what they saw today.” Due to their hard work and professionalism, Diverse Events have been invited back to help organise next years event. Councillor’s Corner Hello everyone. Here is a regular snapshot of what’s been happening recently. As ever, please get in touch if you’d like to find out more. Despite a hard fought campaign from ourselves and the local community, the current council administration has sadly decided to close Stoke Library. The library will be closing its doors on September 16. From the following Friday, a ‘Pop-Up Library’ will be visiting Stoke Methodist Church between 10.30am and 4.30pm. Since the current council administration scrapped weekly bin collections, we’ve noticed that streets have been getting messier. We’ve also received increasing reports of fly tipping. Please use www. plymouth.gov.uk to self-report such issues, or contact us directly. We get lots and lots of emails and calls about the lack of parking; ultimately, there are too many cars and not enough spaces. You can self-report parking issues via www.plymouth.gov.uk. Alternatively, again please get in touch if you are concerned. We’ll do our best to try and help. Stoke Post Office will be closing temporarily. The Post Office are still looking for a replacement Postmaster. Can you help? Last month I visited Stoke Memory Café.

They meet on the second and fourth Mondays, from 2pm, at Stoke Christian Centre. Meanwhile, Luke Pollard MP and I had a tour of the incredible Oceansgate development at South Yard and in the Council Chamber, I spoke on a motion calling on fairer funding for Plymouth’s schools. Last but not least, thank you to everyone who contributed to making Stoke Summer Fair and St Levan Fun Day such a success this year! Look out for our next ‘Have Your Say’ meetings. In the meantime here are our contact details and information about our regular casework surgeries: Last Friday of month: 2.30pm to 3.30pm (location still to be determined as Stoke Library is closing). First Wednesday of month: 6pm to 7pm at NPCL, Engage Church, St Levan Road. No appointment necessary, however advance notice is appreciated. We need any children’s, teenage and adult paperback books in reasonable condition - just give me a ring on 01752 672593 and I will come and collect them.” In November 1965, UNESCO declared that September 8 would be International Literacy Day. Plymouth’s plan to transform and modernise its libraries is getting into gear with funding for the first set of improvement projects now approved. Meeting spaces are to be created in three existing libraries at Crownhill, Devonport and Southway so that the buildings can host a wider range of events to encourage people to use libraries as places to socialise and improve their health and wellbeing through clubs such as memory cafes, job clubs and digital skills lessons.

Council leader Ian Bowyer has given the green light to a package worth £121,408 to get the first phase of the Plan for Libraries underway. It also includes buying equipment to enable the service to deliver pop-up libraries in areas such as Whitleigh where there previously has been no service provision. He said: “The Plan for Libraries was always aimed at creating a modern libraries service, which reflects the 21st Century and the fact people want access to computers and advice as well as a full range of services based around reading. “I am delighted to see these improvements now get underway. I am also really pleased to see the Libraries Service team up with CATERed to bring a new generation of library users through their Lunch at the Libraries project. It’s inspiring and just the sort of initiative that can make a real difference to people’s lives.” The Plan for Libraries set out proposals for the next three years and the steps the Council will take with its vision to ‘deliver modern services that inspire learning and creativity, improve health and wellbeing and support digital inclusion.’ Only last week the council launched its search for a partner to redevelop the St Budeaux Library to create more modern and fitting facilities. As well as planning for future needs, staff have been serving up a summer of reading and food. Plymouth Libraries joined forces with CATERed, the Plymouth food provider on its Big Summer Food Tour to feed children’s minds and tummies. Every Wednesday in August at Devonport Library, St Budeaux Library and a pop-up library at the Four Greens Centre in Whitleigh, children can pick up a free lunch and join in with family friendly activities. Free activities from 10am to 4pm include the Summer Reading Challenge, crafts, digital making, coding and more. Manager Mandy MacDonald said: “Last week we had 1,400 visitors at those libraries and 600 lunches served up. This was an amazing take-up and an absolute joy to see so many children getting stuck into books, colouring, making models and having great fun.” Special guests include Dartmoor Zoo, the Theatre Royal, National Marine Aquarium, Shark Trust, Plymouth Music Zone, Devon and Cornwall Police, the Cats Protection League and authors Tom Palmer and Emma Carlisle. Every week, the first 100 children at each venue will be given a free book to take home and keep.

It’s a Swish event!

Plymouth’s New Continental Hotel will be celebrating Fashion in the City Week in September with the second Swish This Way! event.

Fashion In The City takes place between September 9 and 17 and Swish This Way! forming part of the amazing week of all things fashion on Thursday September 14 between 6pm and 8pm. Swish This Way! is an idea born from ‘rock envy,’ according to Elinor Eaton, development manager for the New Continental Group. She said: “It was an idea created last year after the Herald Business Awards when I saw all of the fabulous ladies looking divine in their dresses. “A group of us decided to get together and swap dresses to revamp our wardrobes without spending money! It then grew and grew, finally being held in the Ballroom at the New Continental Hotel, where over 100 ladies came together to help each other look and feel fabulous! “With such an amazing number of special occasions and Christmas parties, it’s impossible to always purchase a new outfit for each occasion. “Swish This Way! gets rid of the guilt of spending money on new outfits but also helps the environment. It is estimated that over £100 million worth of clothing goes to landfill

each year. This way we all get to gain something new to us, and two great causes get supported along the way.”

two causes on the night, and also receive a raffle ticket drawn on the evening, plus welcoming drink and nibbles,

The concept is simple: Ladies take their occasion wear clothes that they no longer wear to the drop off points before the event, and then these are exchanged for buttons and ribbons which act as currency for the evening.

As well as local swishers who came to the event last year, word of mouth is bringing more and more ladies to the eventbrite page said Elinor.

The currency is then used at the event to buy something for the new owner enabling them to build up a new wardrobe. Elinor added: “Your bank balance is barely affected and you’re not contributing to the 350,000 tonnes of annual clothing waste.” Elinors aim is two-fold: encouraging people to be thrifty, while looking after the planet by reducing clothing waste, but also empowering women to feel fabulous no matter what their shape, size or bank balance! At Swish This Way! swishers pay a £5 entry fee, which is donated to

“The feedback last year was so overwhelming. It was such an amazing evening, with as much emphasis on women supporting each other and telling each other how fabulous they looked as the clothes themselves - the atmosphere was tremendous! “There is so much power behind a community that works together to not only share and save the environment but support local causes and help and inspire each other to feel better about themselves,” she added. Weston Mill recycling centre set for £200,000 upgrade Weston Mill Recycling Centre is set for a £200,000 upgrade. Changes will include a brand new drainage system as well as a complete resurfacing of the site. There will also be new road markings, designed to improve traffic flow and help separate residents using the site and plant vehicles. Councillor Mike Leaves, Cabinet Member for Strategic Streetscene and the Environment, said: “This investment in one of the city’s key assets shows not just our commitment improve this particular recycling centre but also out commitment to encouraging recycling in Plymouth as a whole. “We hope that these improvements will not only make the site safer for users and for staff but will also make it easier for people to visit and reduce the amount sent to landfill each year.” The changes to the recycling centre come after extensive dialogue with the Environment Agency. After thorough testing, there were some concerns that in the event of very heavy rainfall, the site could become a flood risk and therefore pose a potential pollution hazard to the surrounding areas. The work, which is expected to last two months, is scheduled to begin in October as historically, this is when the centre sees a reduction in both visitors and tonnage of waste. During this time, the centre will be closed. Chelson Meadow Recycling Centre will continue to operate as normal.

City charity receives Royal grant boost for energy saving A Plymouth-based charity which collects and distributes surplus food supplies to people in need has been boosted by a grant from the Prince of Wales Charitable Trust. Devon and Cornwall Food Action (DCFA), which is based in Stonehouse, supports up to 3,000 vulnerable individuals on a monthly basis. Their impact, however, is not limited to reducing food waste and alleviating food poverty. Food waste also contributes to higher carbon footprints and their impact on climate change – an environmental impact recognised by DCFA for the last six years. It’s one of the reasons why this local charity actively monitors the supplies it manages. To date, they have avoided adding over 117 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions to the environment; the carbon footprint equivalent of a small manufacturing business. Always keen to do more, DCFA have recently adopted a ‘Greening DCFA’ plan with a view to improving the energy efficiency of their Plymouth food hub in Stonehouse. The charity’s commitment to securing new, more energy efficient freezers has recently received a boost from the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation which has provided a welcomed grant for new, more energy efficient, equipment. DCFA Manager Jackie Young, who calculates their carbon footprint on a regular basis, said: “We need to ensure our food supplies are kept at the appropriate temperatures but old and worn out fridges and freezers are not good for our utility bills or the environment. “The six new A and B grade appliances will reduce our electricity use, save money and contribute even further to a low carbon footprint. We are very grateful to the Foundation for their support and pleased to be sharing the Prince of Wales’s commitment to a greener planet.”

Boys are back in town!

Devon-based charismatic Canadian stand-up comedian Craig Campbell and award-winning, fast paced, and witty poet Luke Wright return to Plymouth’s Barbican Theatre in September.

Craig Campbell will be making his third visit to the Baribcan Theatre, with his last tour a massive sell-out. His latest Easy Tiger tour is likely to be just as popular. Craig recently supported Frankie Boyle for the third time on his national tour and was a hit on Alan Davies’ As Yet Untitled (Dave). He’s also performed on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC One), Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC Three), and was responsible for easing the contractions of an expectant mother who laughed so hard at his performance on One Night Stand (Dave) - which detailed an encounter with a badger...her waters broke.

as he spits out visceral, inventive verse that sweats, bleeds and sings.

STRAPPING BUSINESS IDEA BRINGS SUCCESS AND EMPLOYMENT TO PLYMOUTH Andrew Littlejohn has achieved remarkable success growing a business from just an idea from a gap in the market to an international organisation employing 14 local people in a decade. Andrew, who was a lorry driver in a former life, realised that the webbing used by transport companies could be sourced more cost effectively, and Handy Straps was born, initially operating from a room in Andy’s house. Helped from the beginning by family friend, Daniel Roberts, Andy proceeded to dig out the cellar to store more stock, move to a new house with a large double garage, then to a small industrial unit, and currently to Burrington Way Industrial Estate. He is currently expanding his premises in Burrington Way to make way for five containers on their way from Quindao in China to cater for the huge amount of orders in the early part of 2018. “We were so busy in January last year that we ran out of stock,” explained Andy, whose keen business acumen has meant that he is able to redress problems in a very speedy and practical way. Andy found his China connection just by exploring the internet, and took himself off to visit the factory owners. He is now

planning his fourth trip overseas, proving that there is nothing like the personal touch in determining good business practice. “I have a lovely time over there,” enthuses Andy, “I am treated so well, as a fairly big supplier of theirs, and hopefully reciprocate good west country courtesy and mutual respect.” As well as sourcing his materials from overseas, Andy and his team process and package over 500 orders per day from as far away as Australia and the US. Orders vary from a single webbing belt for an individual, to straps used to secure luggage or items on roof racks or trailers, to 6,000 straps for a Bed Company used to transport beds across the country. The straps are made up to order by a team of six seamstresses based in the factory, and then packaged and sent out. Andy is one of only eight wholesalers of Velcro in the UK and can deliver bespoke specifications to include all fixings with ease. He contributes his success to excellent customer care and currently has over 242,000 positive feedbacks on EBay. His staff

are extensively trained over a period of two – three months to take extremely accurate orders, which are dispatched carefully and promptly, (next day delivery on many items); with repeated communication to the customer, including a photograph showing the weight and type of order. “This helps quickly solve any confusion once the order has left the premises,” explains Andy, “as both we and the customer have a picture of what was sent to match against what was asked for, so there’s no argument.” “We also open Sundays to cope with the bulk of orders coming in over the weekend, but close Saturdays to give us all a break.” Whilst not divulging his age, Andy has no plans to retire and is a wonderful example of how our passions and enthusiasms keep us young. He runs a very well-oiled machine, and is always on the lookout for new markets. Recently he has produced a line of dog and cat leads and harnesses in a myriad of different colours and styles to compliment the booming market for pet accessories. And he has not lost his local touch – customers are welcome to visit weekdays where they can see for themselves what is on offer. And whether they are looking for a single lead or wanting to place a large order, they can be assured of personal care and attention that is second to none.

Ofsted thumbs-up for school where staff go ‘above and beyond’ Teachers’ high aspirations and their commitment to going above and beyond for their pupils at a Plymouth primary school have been singled out for praise by Ofsted. Ford Primary School – with just over 200 pupils – was inspected recently by Ofsted and retained its Good rating, with the inspector commenting that the school

Council funding helps Ernesettle youth project shoot for stars An Ernesettle youth project is shooting for the stars after a rocketing £20,000 boost from Plymouth City Council. SPACE Shot supports young people between the ages of 10 and 19 and is run by Plymouth charity Barefoot. SPACE Shot has now worked with a total of 293 individual young people from different backgrounds with different social needs. The council’s City Change Fund, which funds local projects for local people through a partnership with Crowdfunder, has pledged £17,500, the former Lord Mayor Councillor Pauline Murphy has donated a further £3,000 and Councillors Mark Lowry, Peter Smith and John Riley have all added £500 each from their community grants. Councillor Terri Beer, Cabinet member for Children and Young People said: “SPACE Shot is so very important to the community of Ernesettle and I’m so

glad that as a council we’ve been able to support them financially so that their sterling work continues into the future.” SPACE Shot provides three sessions of open access youth work a week and offer a safe place where all young people are welcome. Over time, youth workers have built trusting relationships with the young people who attend SPACE Shot, many of whom face a variety of problems. In 2016/17, the charity supported young people struggling with drug and alcohol issues or suffering from mental health problems, teenage parents or young people facing pregnancy as well as many others who are not in education, employment or training. The City Change Fund is a pioneering project in which some of the city’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money goes to support local projects through a

partnership with Crowdfunder. The CIL is a charge made on certain new developments, like housing or student accommodation. Most of the money is spent on things that keep the city running like roads, schools and parks, but some can be spent by communities to improve what happens in their local area. Crowdfunder is an online platform that allows the public to pledge money towards causes or projects which they feel worthy of support. If you would like to know more or help to fund SPACE Shot visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk/support-space-shotyouth-project/ The City Change Fund is an ongoing fund of over £100,000 that can contribute to any projects in the city that are trying to improve things in the city or a local community. provides “high quality teaching and an environment for pupils to thrive”. “At the heart of your work is your determination to ensure that all pupils and their families have better life chances,” said the inspector in a letter sent to headteacher Jonathan Thomas following the inspection last month. “You rightly have high aspirations for all your pupils and you and your leaders work tirelessly to ensure that they achieve the very best they can.” Mr Thomas said he was ‘delighted’ that the hard work of all those involved with the school had been recognised during the inspection. “This is our second inspection since I took over as headteacher and, although the experience is quite challenging, we welcomed the opportunity to showcase all that is good about Ford,“ said Mr Thomas, who has been headteacher at the school since 2010. “It is a privilege to work in a school such as Ford with such dedicated and hard-working staff who strive to help the children achieve to the best of their abilities.” The report also notes that the pupils are well-behaved, good ambassadors for the school and speak positively about how teachers and support staff help them to improve their work. Chair of Governors, Councillor Philippa Davey, said she was “immensely proud” of the report and the fact the hard work of staff had been formally recognised. “I am well aware of the incredible effort that all our staff and governors put in to ensure the very best for each and every child,” she said. “Thanks must also go to the children, parents, carers and families who make Ford such a fantastic school. We will all be working together to ensure we do the best we can for all our children.”

Innovative new company offers range of services for parents of autistic children

GoCarer launched in Plymouth Therapist and parents can then develop a personalised plan to include therapeutic sessions in the child’s own home or in appropriate social environments, helping the child achieve set objectives over a series of sessions, personalised and suited to the family’s own preferences. Services can be paid for on a pay as you go basis, with no long-term contracts required, meaning families can dip in and out as needed as their child develops, perhaps targeting times such as transition to schools. GoCarer are also pioneering new strategies such as private teaching assistants to ensure they can offer a full service to parents. Alongside this personal involvement, whereby families can really get to know their care worker and therapist, GoCarer offers a user friendly secure website that allows parents and professionals to provide two-way feedback on sessions and communicate seamlessly and promptly with each other, even keeping an automatic record of conversations by text on one platform. Parents can seamlessly communicate with the GoCarer‚ team by SMS and access a record of all their conversation through the website. Secondary diagnosis

Every parent experiences a certain degree of uncertainty and anxiety as they embark on that crazy, roller coaster journey of watching that tiny human being grow and develop into adulthood, writes Karen Pilkington. For many parents, the path is so much more difficult as they must come to terms with additional needs and disabilities that they have never encountered before. Autism is a condition that affects more than one in 100 people in the UK according to the National Autistic Society. It is a broad diagnosis which presents in many ways, and can be very difficult to recognise in young children or diagnose correctly. One innovative company has recently decided to use its expertise in technology as well as personal experience of parenting a young child with autism to create a totally new therapy and social care model right here in Plymouth. Stressful and difficult time Co-founder of GoCarer, Anzel Lai, was commuting to his job as a software engineer in London from his home in Plymouth when his first son, Darragh, was born. After a few years the family knew something was different in Darragh’s development when he ended up in hospital refusing to eat, but it took two years for them to get a diagnosis – a particularly stressful and difficult time of uncertainty for the young parents. It was this experience that prompted Anzel and his friend Kingma Ma to develop the idea to combine professional therapists and experienced carers under one roof to enable families to develop a personalised action plan to give their children the best possible support over the course of their childhood and young adulthood to encourage their future independence. They chose to concentrate on children and young adults under 26 years old to ensure continuity and availability at those very complex transitional times for young people. The company received financial backing to support their ideas to use technology to provide seamless communication between professionals and parents, and

The GoCarer team which is based at Plymouth Science Park

moved into premises in Plymouth Science Park. They have worked very hard to ensure they are compliant with care and health and safety law and best practice and have built good relationships with public bodies in the city as well as Devon and Cornwall. They are commissioned to offer assessment services by Devon CareDirect, and therapeutic care by Plymouth and Cornwall Clinical Commissioning Groups. They can offer an ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) privately. They will work with Plymouth City Council and Devon County Council as well as Cornwall Joint commissioning department. They have recruited Alexandra Barron, a Specialist Occupational Therapist with over 29 years’ experience, and Cara Porter, a Speech and Language Therapist who will be joining in November, in order to extend their multi-

disciplinary team, with the vision to bring all the specialists in house. They have already recruited several carers, carefully screened for their understanding of autism, previous experience and ability to undertake ongoing training to ensure they are aware of the latest research and practical resources available to support young people with autism. They also have experienced manager Mel Isherwood on board who has over 14 years of experience in care management roles including direct payments. They are now ready to offer their services to the local community and can be contacted to arrange a free 90-minute consultation to identify and better understand your child’s developmental stage, whether they have a diagnosis or not. After this, parents may decide to access screening or a full assessment if this has not been done.

Autism is often a secondary diagnosis for children born with a disability and it is exciting to think that Plymouth could be spearheading a bespoke new service that can bring hope to families with children with even the most complex needs. All children are developing at different rates, and the hope of ensuring that they grow to be as independent and happy as possible as adults is core in the heart of any parent. Services like GoCarer can create a more level playing field, helping overcome some of the extra hurdles that parents of children with autism must face. They can be contacted via the website www.gocarer. com, on 01752 875668 or sending an email to info@ gocarer.com. Their office is at 1 Davy Road, Plymouth Science Park, Derriford, Plymouth PL6 8BX.

Education Training Be part of something different – choose a career with City College! September is an exciting time: whether you are heading back to school or starting something new at college or university. For some however, catching up with friends or starting a new course can quickly turn sour. What do you do if you realise that you don’t want to stay in school or study the course you applied for?

72% of UK businesses rely on people with STEM skills, but four in ten employers struggle recruiting staff with the right skill set, this facility will enable the College to embed STEM skills right across the curriculum, meaning their students and apprentices will be in demand. Anna-Rose Chapman, an automotive student at the College, said: “Studying at the College is the best thing I have ever done. I came here to learn and better myself and I’ve done just that, but I have also had so much fun and made lots of friends. City College not only offers fantastic training but also a great social environment, I can’t recommend it enough.”

If you are aged 16 or over and unhappy with your education or career choice, then it’s not too late to try something different. You can still apply for a full-time study programme or Apprenticeship at City College. Mike Jones, Employability & Enterprise Manager at the College, leads their expert team of careers and information advisors and says: “We see many young people at this time of year taking the bold step of saying ‘no this is not for me’ and turning to us for free, impartial advice. “As a leading provider of professional and technical training, we offer career focused courses to suit a wide range of interests. From media to science and plumbing to dance there is a course for everyone and every ability right

through to university-level. If you don’t have a GCSE in English and maths, don’t worry, you can study these as part of your study programme at the College. “There is a lot of misinformation out there. For example, you don’t have to stay in school until you’re 18, like most people think. College courses and Apprenticeships are great

alternatives to school-based education and can set you on the path to further study or a great career.” Students starting at the College this September will be the first to use the College’s new £13million Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). With recent surveys showing that

City College recently placed 1st in the South West and 2nd in the UK for student satisfaction (FE Choices survey, 2017). In addition to an Apprenticeship success rate 14% above the national average that sees 96% of apprentices going in to successful employment, the College also offers an award winning university-level provision. If you are interested in making a fresh start, City College is hosting events with free impartial advice and guidance every Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7.00pm throughout September. Visit cityplym.ac.uk/events for details.

‘Every day at Coombe Dean is an opportunity to learn’ Choosing a secondary school for your child is an important decision – one of the biggest a family makes. So how do you make the right choice? My advice would be to choose a school where your child will feel safe and secure; where he or she will be treated as an individual; where staff will go out of their way to help children grow their talents and achieve their hopes and dreams. A school like Coombe Dean. We believe in “Success built around positive relationships,” which means that we go the extra mile to provide a stimulating place to learn. It means we encourage every one of our students to grow into a confident, curious learner. Every day, we ask ourselves the question, “How can I make relationships even better - so that students have an enjoyable and exciting learning experience whilst studying for vital qualifications?” In our internet-dominated world of rapid change and increasing automation, students need more than excellent academic qualifications: they need great interpersonal skills and self-awareness; they need to be highly motivated and to be resilient. At Coombe Dean, we help them

achieve this because our teachers are role-models in learning, skilled in equipping young people to take the lead in their own development.

hopes and dreams. Every day at Coombe Dean is an opportunity to learn – no matter who you are, what you are doing or how you are feeling!

Teachers in every subject look beyond the obvious skills and knowledge needed to be successful in exams. They provide additional activities that help students to practise the life skills that will make them successful - independently and in teams. These skills are reinforced by a wide range of experiences outside of the classroom, which we tailor to those all-important

If this picture of a vibrant, childcentred school sounds like the right kind of school for your child, please come and see Coombe Dean for yourself: I am sure you won’t be disappointed. Tourism minister John Glen pictured at the Mayflower Steps with Charles Hackett, chief executive of Mayflower 400

Tourism Minister highlights importance of Mayflower 400 events for Plymouth New Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, John Glen, has visited Plymouth to meet the Mayflower 400 team. The Minister’s visit recognises the importance of the 2020 Mayflower commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims’ historic journey across the Atlantic, and the celebration of Plymouth as Britain’s Ocean City. With Britain’s Ocean City planning big things for the commemoration year the Tourism Minister conducted a tour of key areas in the city that will play a role in the 2020 celebrations, including the Mayflower Steps, Barbican, The Hoe and the Royal William Yard. John Glen met with leaders from different sectors in the city to discuss the preparations.

Mayflower masterplan is taking shape Plymouth is leading a partnership of eleven

Plymouth’s plans to mark the sailing of the Mayflower as part of the 2020 global commemorations are now under starters orders.

Three historic trails, which will form part of a national network of trails, will be created in Plymouth as part of a package of physical changes designed to bring to life the story of the Mayflower and its journey. The Mayflower National Trail is a key project of the national partnership and the 2020 commemorations. It will connect 11 destinations across Britain to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower journey, a symbolic moment in the shared history of Britain, the Netherlands and the USA. Council Leader Ian Bowyer has given the green light to £3.5 million capital funding to get the projects underway. He said: “We want Plymouth to look its best in the global spotlight and I hope people are as excited as I am about the physical changes. “We’ve got something brand new in the form of the trails and improvements to public areas – and something very, very old – our incredible Elizabethan houses to help us tell this incredible story. “We are planning a year-long cultural programme including major events, but these projects are about improving areas so that Plymouth people, as well as visitors, can enjoy them for many years to come.” He added: “The immediate impact of these projects during 2020 is estimated to be in the region of an additional 500,000 visitors, creating an additional economic impact of at least £18 million and 360 jobs. Longer term these projects will support our target growth figures for visitor numbers– which is good for jobs, good for local business and good for families living in and around Plymouth.” The three heritage trails are designed to showcase the city’s rich heritage and to help locals look at the city with a fresh pair of eyes as well as enabling visitors to grasp the scale of Plymouth’s part in the nation’s story. One will journey around the historic Barbican and Sutton Harbour area and take visitors back to the 16th and 17th centuries. As part of this proposal, the Elizabethan House will be sensitively restored to create an immersive attraction that will help visitors get a sense of life in this period of history. Another trail will help visitors to navigate between the Barbican and ‘The Box’ the city’s new visitor attraction, 18

locations across England and Leiden in Holland, all commemorating the historic voyage through major international events and the development of Mayflowerinspired projects. Engagement of the US travel market is already underway, with initial signs of positive response to the commemorations and the trail of UK and Dutch locations. Plymouth projects already unveiled include a ‘Mayflower Muster’ week in September 2020; three historic trails in Plymouth, which will form part of a national network of trails, taking visitors on a journey back to the 17th Century; renovations to the historic Elizabethan House, an ‘Illuminate’ community and art festival of light; and the opening of ‘The Box’ – the £37 million attraction, gallery and museum complex which will become the city’s cultural centre. John Glen, said: “Mayflower 400 is a wonderful project that will not only celebrate centuries of shared history between the UK and US but also help promote Plymouth to the world. “The commemorations will help increase the profile of the city and encourage even more international tourists, particularly Americans, to explore Plymouth and the South West. It is an important part of our history and I look forward to seeing how this story will be told in the coming years.” Charles Hackett, chief executive of Mayflower 2020 said: “We are very pleased that the Arts, Heritage and Tourism Minister has chosen to visit Plymouth and engage with the Mayflower 400 national programme early in his time in post. We are busy working behind the scenes to make sure that across the country and in Plymouth we are able to take full advantage of the opportunities Mayflower 400 will bring.” It is estimated that across the national Mayflower partnership there will be an increase in tourism visitors of over 1.4 million visitors during the commemoration year. Celebrations to include public art project

A series of cultural projects will help Plymouth commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s sailing to America in 2020.

The Box – Plymouth’s new £37 million cultural centre – will open in 2020

museum and gallery – which will house the wider history, art and culture of Plymouth. A third will trace the journey along the Hoe, looking out towards Plymouth Sound. It is hoped that local people of all ages will play a big part in the design process and get involved in creating way-markers and interpretation panels by unearthing stories through research with historians. As well as a physical trail, the story will be bought to life through digital resources. There will also be sensitive improvement works to key public spaces in and around the Barbican to make the locations more welcoming. They include improvements to: • the Mayflower Steps and Mayflower Museum • Sir John Hawkins Square behind the law courts • Prysten House – to encourage more people to visit this historic Elizabethan building with its unique American credentials • the entrance to Southside Street, the gateway to the Barbican. The project team is asking for funding to help support further detailed investigations into the condition of the city’s two Grade II* Elizabethan buildings, the Elizabethan House in New Street and the Merchants House in St Andrew’s Street. Given their age – older than the USA – specialist advice and contractors will be needed for restoration. Chief executive of Mayflower 400 Charles Hackett said: “These trails will be a permanent and lasting reminder of the part Plymouth has played in the Mayflower story. “This is an opportunity to put Plymouth at the heart of an internationally significant commemoration – but also

for Plymouth people to get involved as this is their story too. This is why we are so keen to get all of Plymouth on board to help us showcase the great things that Plymouth has.” Plymouth’s Mayflower leadership group and the National Mayflower Compact Partnership are chaired by Adrian Vinken OBE. He said: “It’s exciting to see the ideas and projects we’ve been planning over the past few years finally starting to come together. Parts of the city will be transformed for the better by the time we get to 2020.” The paper also gives the green light to investigate the feasibility of a Mayflower monument as well as the need for waterfront event infrastructure on the Hoe linked to Mayflower events. A host of key projects designed to showcase the city in 2020 are already being developed. Work has started to build ‘The Box’ – the £37 million attraction, gallery and museum complex which will become the city’s cultural centre. In August planning permission was granted to build the 1620 hotel development overlooking the Hoe. Work is currently ongoing to refurbish the City Market, demolition work has started as part of the first phase of work to redevelop Colin Campbell Court in the West End, while towards the other end of the city centre, the old bus station at Bretonside is being knocked down to pave the way for the Drake Circus Leisure redevelopment. City Centre public realm improvements are also being planned. Overall investment in Plymouth in preparing for Mayflower is in the region of £175 million.

Now a group of artists have unveiled their contribution to the celebrations, creating pieces of public art which explore aspects of the city’s history and brings them to a new audience. The Wallflower Project is the brainchild of Dr Jody Patterson, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Plymouth, and art collective Loci, which is made up of graduates from the University’s Fine Art programme. It will see a series of murals created across the city between now and 2020, in conjunction with heritage and community groups and furthering Plymouth’s burgeoning identity as a city of culture. Work is currently underway on the first mural, which is titled The Seafarer – The Eager of Spirit, the Heart to Travel and engages the theme of transatlantic journeys during the 400-year period since the Mayflower. It is being painted on an exterior wall of The Cooperage building in Royal William Yard, and will be unveiled ahead of the Plymouth Art Weekender from September 23-25. Dr Patterson, whose research focuses on the cultural significance of public art, said: “Murals are a fantastic way of not only brightening up a community but telling the stories which have made it what it is today. They can create a sense of cultural identity and civic pride, but you also want them to generate conversation and debate. We felt the Mayflower was the perfect subject to celebrate in this way, and are looking forward to working with artists and the community to create more pieces of this nature over the next three years.” A Crowdfunder campaign has now been launched to fund future murals, and for more information about how to get involved visit https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/thewallflower-project-plymouth2020.

TACKLING ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR IN STOKE Stoke Traders and Residents Association (STARS) have been continuing to meet monthly throughout the holidays, with the next meeting due to be held on September 13 at 6.30pm in the function room of the Stoke Inn. They are a residents and traders group based around Stoke Village and the Blockhouse Park who are trying to make a difference to the common problems that seem to affect so many areas.

Pennywell Farm is just off the A38, near Buckfastleigh, just 25 minutes from Plymouth and offers a full day of hands on animal action, whatever the weather. Race the friendly ferrets, bottle feed the lambs and goat kids, milk the goats, collect the eggs and meet over 200 farm animals and pets. No visit to Pennywell would be complete without enjoying cuddles with one of the world famous Pennywell Miniature Pigs and you can go down to the race track and experience the phenomenon that is pig racing every afternoon at 2.30pm. Meet Shire horse Fusilier, the old gentleman of the farmyard and all his pony and donkey friends. Goatarama is home to some of the livelier Pennywell goats where you can enjoy seeing them at play and meet some exotic poultry from all over Europe in the Funky Fowl area. There are some very sociable Alpacas as well as pets galore, including rabbits, hedgehogs, tortoises, guinea pigs, mice, chicks and ducklings all waiting to make new friends in the pets area.

replanted by members of STARS. It was disheartening to discover that a few days later many plants had been uprooted and stolen from the planters! It was with gritted teeth, that volunteers from STARS replanted once again. It’s apparent that a determination to improve our local areas into rubbish free attractive amenities for everyone to enjoy requires an additional amount of grit and perseverance!

Bins, rubbish removal, petty acts of vandalism, and improvements to the local Blockhouse Park are part of the ongoing issues which the organisation is seeking to resolve.

However, community organisations like STARS are committed to continuing. If you would like to join them in the fight to beat selfishness, thoughtlessness and inconsiderate behaviour, please get along to their monthly meetings or email the committee members to express an issue or offer support for future activities.

As in other areas of the city, this is often an uphill battle. Recently the planters were revamped with donated plants and

Alternatively, head down to the wildlife ponds, grab a net and see if you can discover what lies beneath the surface. Visit at the weekend or during school holidays and you can enjoy one of 2 big shows every day from entertainers, jugglers and magicians to Falconry displays and gun dog shows. Polar explorer Antony Jinman turns dreams into reality

All aboard for real time bus information Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) systems have been installed at bus stops across Plymouth. The RTPI are upgraded versions of the system previously seen throughout the city centre and will be able to give accurate information on bus arrivals and departures. Some existing displays have been refurbished while more than half of the displays have been replaced with a new, more versatile design that allows more information, such as stopping locations and images to be shown.

Displays along Royal Parade are now live and fully operational with the rest of the city expected to follow in the next few weeks. The new system, installed by transport logistics specialist 21st Century Passenger Solutions, operates on a mobile phone network, speeding up communication between buses and displays and improving the accuracy of wait times shown. It will also reduce the number of buses that don’t appear on the system due to a lost connection. It will also be possible to remotely monitor the displays allowing faults to be detected and repaired more quickly.

The flexible system will also allow important service messages to be shown at short notice – for example details of any route or timetable changes resulting from adverse weather, emergency roadworks or other unexpected problems. Other improvements include all displays being capable of providing audio information for the blind and visually impaired, via a special key fob. ‘Like to be’ is the brainchild of successful Plymouth polar explorer Antony Jinman. His goal is to raise a further £70,000 to invest in crucial technology to allow the business to further expand - so benefitting more schools as they engage in a specialist approach to cementing classroom learning.

01752 721528 / 07773339470 www.prideandjoy-homeandgarden.co.uk

His company is successfully establishing links between employers and school children who are encouraged freely to chat, alongside their teacher, with a host of professionals who are actually putting into practice what is being learnt in the classroom. Pupils can talk via the internet, with top experts from a host of disciplines who can explain how classroom theory works in reality.

Science, for instance, can teach you how to build a bridge but it’s the engineers who can show youngsters the challenges they face when doing so. The scheme has already successfully seen partnering of engineers and climate scientists with school children in the south west. With his background in mounting successful expeditions to Arctic wastelands, Antony first encouraged children to talk with polar scientists about climate change so they could gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Students were able to ask questions and hear from the teams of experts who were ‘on the ground.’ They were able to see and provide first hand explanations on how mankind’s influence was impacting the environment. Antony is currently building ‘Like to be’ as an ‘Ed Tech’ (educational technology) company and has based the firm at Plymouth Science Park. It’s an ideal location - due to the scope of on-site firms which are mainly involved in science and technology. Crowdfunding will certainly help the pioneering project increase its reach for schools in the region – and beyond. The team is using the seedrs.com platform so investors gain a stake in the business itself at a price of £15.03 per share. “It’s a cost-effective way to raise aspirations to learn more about career opportunities and for students to learn more about the career opportunities out there,” said Antony. The money raised will be invested into developing online services for the business - which should also see investors benefitting from 30% tax relief from their input.

Financial input also allows for the team to expand further and strengthen links with industries working in the areas of: science, engineering, technology, arts and maths. “It means classrooms can hear from the best of the best who may be hundreds of miles away from the school and who are unable to travel to the classroom but can still provide pupils with a presentation - and answer crucial questions relating to their specialism,” he adds. The team has already developed strong links with its founding partner, Network Rail, which has been involved with the project for the past two years. For details visit the website: liketobe.org. Much-loved Victoria Park gets a much-needed makeover

A much-loved old lady has been getting a thorough makeover - and her name-sake would have been rather more than amused, we think. Victoria Park in Millbridge endured a rather savage ‘reveal’ during July but she’s come through it all and is looking great. This popular city oasis has experienced a considerable injection of enthusiasm and fund-raising since the formation of the Victoria Park Community Project, involving hard working residents and other volunteers. VPCP Chair, Michelle Quintrell said: “Although our park has been gradually spruced up, and is a great place for families and dog walkers, the old Bowling Green has been a bit of a Sleeping Beauty. “As you can see from the photos, Plymouth City Council has really taken the area in hand and cleared an enormous amount of undergrowth and accumulated litter. At the moment, the fate of the two long disused

Story by Karen Pilkington buildings is uncertain, but we have some ideas for them and hope we’ll be able to get them used in some way, as soon as possible.” Affectionately known as ‘Vicky Park’, the locale’s history is being researched, and this is already bearing fruit. As one of the best places in the city to discover boundary stones, there is an existing trail with a map in the park showing where 10 such stones can be found in the park, as well as directions for trails that take you further afield into the city to discover more of these unique emblems of Old Plymouth When Victoria Park was first opened, in October 1902, it was something of a unique enterprise involving Plymouth County Borough, Devonport County Borough and East Stonehouse Urban District. The Three Towns Amalgamation Centenary Stone, unveiled in November 2014, stands near the Millbridge end of Victoria Park. It marks the only place where the

boundaries of all Three Towns; Devonport, Stonehouse and Plymouth met before their unpopular merger in 1914. The park is also home to another controversial element – the steel sculpture created by Turner Prize winning abstract sculptor, Richard Deacon in 1990, titled Moor. Perched on top of a disused railway viaduct at the end of Victoria Park, Richard Deacon’s ‘Moor’ is a huge, curved metal girder, with the best place to view it from a train leaving Plymouth station. The industrial feel of the artwork has echoes of 19th century infrastructure – its proximity to the current railway line reinforces this feeling and, according to the Plymouth Culture Board, ‘will have you asking questions about how our industrial past and modern future are entwined.’ With the Victoria Park Community Project considering replacing the bandstand in the park, and holding regular community events, it’s clear that the future of the park is in good hands.

£27 million to be spent on ‘Better Places and Spaces’ for City Centre A multi-million pound project that will transform the open spaces and pedestrian areas around the city centre has moved a step closer to becoming a reality.

will be working closely with retailers, the City Centre Company as well as other key stakeholders on designs.

A further business case to cover the detailed design and construction costs for the schemes is expected to be submitted later this year.

Plymouth City Council has committed £27 million over the next five years to transform this key location to make sure that the city centre looks its best in time for the Mayflower 400 celebrations and beyond.

A number of major projects are already underway in the City Centre and Waterfront area, including the regeneration of Millbay by English Cities Fund with over 400 homes, employment space, a new school, marina and ‘We are at the start restaurant now complete as well of a programme to as outline consent for a further rejuvenate the heart 600 homes, more leisure, retail, of Plymouth’ office and hotel development.

It’s new ‘Better Places – Plymouth’ programme will look at all streets and spaces in the city centre to improve walking and cycling routes, make the more tired areas more attractive to improve the look and feel for shoppers and visitors as well as encourage more inward investment in retail, leisure, employment and housing into the heart of Plymouth.

Council Leader Ian Bowyer has just given the green light to funding to appoint consultants to work up ideas outlined in the City Centre Masterplan and the Joint Local Plan. He said: “We are at the start of a programme to rejuvenate the heart of Plymouth. We have the visions and the masterplan, now we are looking at the detail, how it will look and feel, and what changes we need to make to attract more people and investment into the city centre.” A tender exercise has been carried out to appoint a preferred design-led consultant team to work alongside the council team. The successful bidder will be announced shortly and through a series of consultations

A new coach station has been opened, work has started on the new £34 million Box – the city’s new history, arts and culture centre on North Hill, a £3m refurbishment of the City Market and a major shop front improvement initiative is underway. Demolition work has just started on part of Colin Campbell Court in the West End and the former Bretonside bus station is now being dismantled ahead of work starting on the Drake Circus Leisure cinema and food and drink complex. Councillor Bowyer added: “We want to build on this sense of momentum and make sure the entire city centre benefits from the change and investment that is taking place.” A City Centre Leadership Board is overseeing the project.

James saddles up for charity Plymouth Surveyor James Barron is gearing up for a gruelling charity bike ride on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society - in memory of his late father David, who suffered from dementia.

The 45-year-old - who owns Barrons Surveying Services, a member of the Plymouth Area Property Professionals Association (PAPPA), - will hit the road with more than 4,000 other cyclists on the 54 mile DIFC London to Brighton fundraiser on Sunday, September 17. It will be a particularly poignant ride for James as it comes just a few weeks before the first anniversary of his father’s death. Towards the end of a distinguished career as a chartered surveyor, David worked with James at his business based in Peverell, but over the last 10 years his health deteriorated before he passed away in October last year at the age of 72. James – who will be part of the Alzheimer’s Society team - said the ride from Clapham Common to Brighton Pier includes a mile long hill climb to the top of the South

Downs and is one of the most iconic cycle routes in the UK. “With the ride being so close to the anniversary of my father’s death, it is certainly going to be a testing event, both physically and emotionally,” said James. “I take a lot of strength from the fact that others will be helped with the money raised from this ride. The Alzheimer’s Society is such a great charity and do fantastic work in raising awareness and funding vital research into this terrible condition.”

James has set up a Justgiving page www.justgiving.com/ JamesBarron44 and is raising money to help fund the ongoing research into finding a cure/preventing the onset of dementia. “Dementia affects the whole family, not just the person with it. I want to do what I can to prevent others from the same heartache, he added. “My father was much respected in his field and I was very fortunate to be able to call on his experience and expertise in my own surveying business for three very enjoyable years,” said James. “He was the consummate professional and an amazing father.”

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

TALKING RUBBISH As a Neighbourhood Watch we are sometimes contacted about items left outside a house which remain uncollected. This is usually due to the wrong items placed inside a bin. The council use machines that are geared to deal with certain items. We can help by simply following the advice they give. RIGHT AND WRONG. If you put the wrong items in your Green recycling bin, they will not be emptied – the bin men do not have the time to sort them. Do not put in food, crisp packets, plastic bags, plastic film, polystyrene, clothes, shoes, batteries or nappies. Do not put in broken glass, drinking glasses or light bulbs. Finally, do not put items in carrier bags. Although you can put glass bottles and jars into the green recycling bin, too many will make them very heavy. You could take them to a Supermarket recycling bank instead. Your choice. Many Supermarkets and DIY stores also have recycling banks for clothes and plastic bags as well as bottles. The Council will collect items over 25kg, such as fridges, freezers, furniture, beds, mattresses and electrical items. Telephone them to arrange collection. For safety reasons ensure fridges and freezers are taped closed.

and Green wheelie bins are for recycling. They come in two sizes, one is narrower than the other. If you need a Brown or Green wheelie bin, contact Plymouth City Council on 668000 or email recycling@plymouth.gov.uk If you want the larger one then ask for it. You will be given a reference number. You can then collect a bin, free of charge, from the Prince Rock Depot, Macadam Road, Plymouth, PL4 0RZ which is open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 4pm, Friday 9am to 3pm. Take your reference number with you and proof of your identity and address. Go to the first office on your left, just inside the gate. If you need the bin delivered, then contact the Council in the same way. In certain circumstances there may be a charge for delivery. Want to know more? Then look up this website: plymouth.gov.uk/ rubbishandrecycling OR email: recycling@plymouth.gov.uk You can find your collection day by using the Council website.

USE IT OR LOSE IT

Whilst I am talking rubbish, do you know how to obtain wheelie bins?

A recent proposal by Plymouth City Council to close the Weston Mill recycling centre has been cancelled – for now. If we want it to stay then we MUST use it more. If it closes then residents will instead have to travel to Chelson Meadow in Plymstock. So take all items that cannot be placed in your Green or Brown wheelie bins to Weston Mill, this includes timber, electrical items (including microwaves, TV’s, etc), items made of metal, building rubble, clothes and garden rubbish. If we do not use it more then the chances of it closing are high. USE IT OR LOSE IT.

Brown wheelie bins are for household waste

We are St. Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch.

AN OFFENCE. It is an offence to dump waste or bulky items onto land that does not belong to you. A conviction could result in a fine of up to £20,000 or six months imprisonment, or both.

MONEY MA££ERS with Tony Jopson

Credit cards - a relatively new phenomena Some of us will know nothing else than freely available credit in society. Others (maybe somewhat older) will remember a day when this was not so – and it wasn’t that many years ago. From the beginning, credit cards offered significant advantages over all forms of money: They’re pocket size, easily portable, relatively secure and have no intrinsic value in themselves. What’s more, true credit cards buy you time to pay your bill, typically with a modest fee attached. Used mainly for travel and entertainment, the Diners Club Card claims the title of the first credit card in widespread use. Although its purchases were made on credit, Diners Club was technically a charge card, meaning the bill had to be paid in full at the end of each month. By 1951, Diners Club had 20,000 cardholders. The more widespread consumer used American Express card was launched in the USA in 1958 and soon expanded its reach to other countries, introducing the first plastic card in 1959, replacing cardboard and celluloid. By 1964, 1 million American Express cards were in use at 85,000 merchants, foreign and domestic. The first British consumer credit card was Barclaycard, launched by Barclays Bank in the UK as recently as 1966 (even I was born before that – yes, honestly!). Access (your

flexible friend?) was launched by a combination of other banks in 1972. From then on numbers of credit cards expanded widely and by 1999 half of adults in the UK had a credit card. Commercial Television also expanded in the 1960s following ITV’s introduction, funded by advertising rather than a TV licence. Channel 4 began in 1982 and in more recent years with the digital revolution, the floodgates have really opened for commercial TV. Now we only have to switch on any of the array of commercial TV channels to be pummelled with a tsunami of adverts all seeking to get us to purchase goods, often on credit, or to borrow money to do this. And so the availability of credit expanded, as did consumption, which keeps the economy going and growing. Credit of course means debt in practice and individual levels of unrepayable debt soon also increased. The numbers of individuals (and companies) becoming insolvent increased dramatically. Partially to accommodate this, a new Insolvency Act was drawn up in 1986, providing a much needed overhaul and updating of bankruptcy law, previously enshrined in the 1914 Bankruptcy Act. Over the past 20 years, Bankruptcy law in the UK has developed into a much more “debtor friendly” and easy process. One can now apply online for both bankruptcy and the new Debt Relief Orders (for relatively small levels of debt under £20,000).

Nonindustrialized countries and countries with stricter bankruptcy laws such as Germany, still tend to have relatively low credit card debt though. Support for people with hearing and sight loss Deaf in their preferred language

Many of us have concerns about sight and hearing and the incidence of sensory loss is surprisingly high. Around two million people in the UK have low vision and this represents those whose sight problems cannot be corrected by the wearing of spectacles or contact lenses. More than 11 million people have hearing loss (1 in 6 of the UK’s population). Although sensory loss can affect children and young people, the chances of acquiring sight and/ or hearing loss increase as we grow older, so most people will have some experience of supporting a family member with sensory loss. The good news is that sensory loss is no barrier to independent living if you take advantage of the practical and technological support available. As a local charity, Improving Lives Plymouth’s Sensory Solutions team provides a range of services that make a positive difference to people with sensory loss. From its centre at 156 Mannamead Road the charity offers: • A well-stocked resource centre showcasing assistive technology designed to support those with hearing and sight loss. A team of staff and volunteers can demonstrate the equipment on display and help visitors select items best suited to their needs • FREE short-term loans of equipment to enable people to trial items in their own home and at their own pace • A FREE Insight training course that runs one day a week for four weeks. This course introduces people with sight loss to the local and national support available to help them

• A Low Vision Advisor offering support and signposting on all issues relating to a diagnosis of sight loss

Improving Lives OrCam device

• Individual and group information technology (IT) sessions designed to help people with sight loss use the accessibility options on their iPads, tablets and mobile phones. Neither age or sight loss are barriers to engaging with new technology as several of the Centre’s IT clients are in their nineties but have learned to keep in touch with friends and family via email, Skype and Facetime • Braille tuition for those wishing to learn the basics of this coding system • Person-centred ‘Skills for Seeing’ training to help those with Macular degeneration make best use of their remaining vision • Tailored training for medical and allied professionals on how best to support patients with sensory loss; and

adjust to life with low vision. It also gives them the opportunity to meet and talk with other people who are in a similar position and thereby develop new social contacts • A home visiting (Outreach) service for those with severe mobility difficulties or health conditions that, combined with their sensory loss, make it impractical for them to visit our centre. Our Sensory Workers visit such people in their own homes and offer a holistic approach to helping them maintain their desired level of independence

• Sensory awareness training for organisations and businesses. Life with sensory loss has its challenges, so to help you, or someone you know to come to terms with and manage their condition, please call us on 01752 201899. Or drop in to see us at 156 Mannamead Road, Monday to Friday.

As a result of his involvement, South West Water identified the reason for the lack of progress and immediately took steps to rectify the situation. A water connection was installed on behalf of South West Water in August and the community have been compensated for the severe inconvenience they have faced. The compensation payment will be used to purchase a much-needed lawn mower

At the time of writing, we’re in the middle of holiday season. The sun has shone (in between the deluge), we’ve been to the beach, and we’ve had some lovely treats as a family. But I am far from rested, and it’s my own fault.

Rest isn’t just taking time off work, or having a holiday. Hands up all the parents of young children and teenagers who know that. No, rest is an inside job, as they say. You can be active at work, and rested. You can be sunbathing on a beach, and rested. Unfortunately, you can do either and be a stress-ridden monster. I know, believe me, I know.

Council leader Ian Bowyer pictured with two of the new bins in Stoke Village

something that’s hugely important to us and our residents. “This has been a huge task on top of the day job for our teams, but we knew that this was an area that needed looking at as some of the bins were looking pretty tired and not up to the job. Our parks are very popular with dog walkers and despite emptying bins several time a day in some cases, they fill up pretty quickly. “The new bins are much bigger, almost twice the capacity of older bins and will help reduce the problem of getting too full, leading to litter dropping out. “We’re keen to keep all our ward councillors involved as they have a lot of local knowledge

“Ernesettle residents, the Four Greens Community Trust and community workers at Plymouth City Council have worked tirelessly to get the allotments up and running and paid thousands of pounds to have water connected. It is only right that the services they have paid for and which are vital to the community making the most of the allotment site are properly delivered. I look forward to visiting the allotments in due course to meet local gardeners.” South West Water commented: “It was very unfortunate that following the recent changes within the [water] industry this particular application experienced unnecessary delays. “Once the issue was brought to our attention by the MP we immediately took steps to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. We have apologised to the customer for the inconvenience and are pleased to confirm that the water connection has now been installed.”

The bigger bins can also be used for bagged dog waste, which makes it easier to collect and more cost-effective as a separate round won’t be needed. There are signs on all the new bins indicating they are for both litter and dog waste.

This includes Wolseley Road, Ebrington Street, St Budeaux shops and Coy Pool car park.

However, since the allotments were opened, the group struggled to get a vital water supply connected. After months of trying to get the water supply up and running, spending several thousand pounds for a connection which never materialised, and a number of allotment holders abandoning their plots, Johnny Mercer intervened and called on South West Water to investigate the unacceptable hold-up.

Johnny Mercer MP said: “I am very pleased to have ensured that South West Water have taken action to get the water supply for the allotments up and running.

Larger multi-use bins have appeared in parks, on streets and playing fields over the past few months as part of the city council’s plan to keep the city cleaner and greener.

The project also includes installing dual recycle-and-go bins at 18 shopping centres and areas where more people pass through so that the public can recycle when they are out and about.

Four Greens Community Trust had successfully fundraised and worked closely with Plymouth City Council to establish community allotments on a piece of unused land in Ernesettle.

Over 400 new, bigger litter bins have been installed across the city as part of a comprehensive review of what bins are where, their size and condition.

Once the reference numbers are marked on the bins, the public will be able to report the exact location of a bin – either online or by phoning 668000 if they spot a bin that needs emptying.

Local MP, Johnny Mercer, has secured the water supply to Ernesettle Community Allotments.

New, bigger litter bins installed across city

The project has involved making sure that bins in over 600 locations – and that doesn’t include the city centre, the Hoe and Barbican – have an individual reference number and an assigned collection regime.

and will be giving them the reference details for the bins in their area, so they can help us make this a success.” Some of the bins that are less used will also have sensors that will detect when the bins are full so that a team can be sent to empty it. Councillor Leaves added: “We have some bins which are in more isolated spots and do not need emptying quite as often. These sensors will let us know when they are full, so we can get a crew down there to empty the bin.” Council Leader Ian Bowyer added: “I’m really grateful for residents’ patience and cooperation whilst the new bins have been installed. Staff have worked hard to minimise the disruption but I’m sure the wait has been worthwhile.”

There’s a rest day (and year if you look!) in the Good Book called Sabbath. It has been so misrepresented as a system of ‘thou shalt not’ that it can sound negative nowadays. But the Sabbath rest that God set up was never meant to be about the rules and regulations of what had to be avoided. Rest (Sabbath) was created by God and given to mankind as a gift from a kind Father. Jesus affirmed this when he said ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.’ This statement really upset the religious leaders who heard him, the Pharisees. They had made Sabbath into another set of rules for hard pressed people to obey. Jesus turned that on its head, and declared that it is

a gift, to be enjoyed. By His actions (see Luke ch6 and Mark ch2) He showed it is a day to bring healing and wholeness to tired and broken minds and bodies, and a table full of provision for hungry hearts. A far cry from the ‘sit still, do nothing, and work hard to be holy’ day that the legalists had twisted it into. In Luke 6, those same Pharisees, lacking in compassion, had set a trap for Jesus, to see if He would heal a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath (against their understanding of the Law). Well, of course He did! And He challenged them to consider, ‘is it right to do good on the Sabbath, or evil; to save life or to destroy it?’ It enraged those Pharisees, and reading the story, we find it hard to understand why; but so often, taking rest today can upset those around us who have no rest within themselves. (Do the words ‘It’s not fair, how come I have to work and you’re not’ ring any bells? They do with me, sadly.) Rest is an inside job, and best enjoyed with a peace that passes all understanding in the midst of life’s challenges – a peace that God promises to those who look to Him in His Son, Jesus, and not just to rules about Him. And my own holiday rest? Let’s just say I’ve found some tendencies in my own heart that echo those of the Pharisees – thankfully forgiveness, kindness, patience and goodness abounds from my family, so I have a hope of changing my attitude and behaviour. After all, it was the goodness of God that gave us rest in the first place. Enjoy it.

Seven editions reaching 64,000 homes New development will offer ‘real work’ scenarios and high-tech resources

£13m STEM Centre is key to future careers City College has been handed the keys to the new Regional Centre of Excellence for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The £13 million state-of-the-art facility, supported by the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Plymouth City Council, and the Regional Growth Fund, has seen more than 100 employers involved in shaping its development. The Centre will provide a flexible learning environment that simulates ‘real work’ scenarios with industry-standard workshops, laboratories and studios. It will be equipped with high-tech resources to support a broader and more relevant STEM curriculum. Principal of the college, Phil Davies, said:

“STEM is a local and national priority for addressing future skills shortages in related industries and so building the Centre is a direct response to that. Our commitment is to train and develop young people and adults that both employers and the economy need. It is an investment in the future job market. “We want to stimulate interest and support for higher-paid STEM jobs, while at the same time encouraging students to develop their careers and remain in the local workforce. Our vision for the Centre is to enable more crosscurriculum learning that embeds enterprise, employability and STEM into everything we do. We are excited to officially have the keys, as this marks the penultimate milestone for the build and we are looking forward to the official opening.” Work on the Centre, which is being built

by Kier, was started in March last year and completed in July.

Andy Shepherd, site manager of the build, said: “On behalf of the construction team I am delighted to be able to hand over the keys to the new Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM. This has been a great project and the team are immensely proud of the building. We hope the Centre will provide a space where people of all ages can explore and discover a career in STEM.” The college is offering tours of the new building in August, to book a place email marketing@cityplym.ac.uk. Alternatively, there are Course Information Drop-in events every Wednesday in September where the College’s Student Ambassadors will be taking groups on tours. Visit www.cityplym.ac.uk/ events for more information.

Topping-out ceremony at Oceansgate The names of the first new buildings to go up inside the pioneering Oceansgate marine technology campus have been unveiled as part of a topping out ceremony.

Council Leader Ian Bowyer helped fit a pane of glass at the highest point of the first building to be constructed within the former naval yard

for the milestone event in the country’s only Marine Enterprise Zone. The buildings – called Endeavour and Endurance – are designed to be flexible for industrial as well as office and workshop space, but also reflect the historic nature of South Yard and the street pattern just outside the boundaries. There are natural rubble stone gables and steep pitched roofs reflecting the old buildings

nearby but the scheme also has all the high tech advantages for adaptable modern business. The £7.7m project – which has been funded by the city council and Heart of the South West Local Economic Partnership – could house office, design suites, testing labs and training rooms for technology development and prototype production spaces as well as workshops for engineering and manufacturing.
