Sherford Life Matt and his family Life is a marathon, so we should be able to look forward to the finish line!
It seems to be race season at the moment: a few weeks back we had the London Marathon, and as I am writing this we are looking forward to the Plymouth Half Marathon By Revd Tom Brassil in a few days’ time. The London Marathon had plenty of stories this year – stories of joy, pain and trials overcome. We had the winner, Eliud Kipchoge, running the second-fastest official marathon time in history. Then we had those iconic pictures of Hayley Carruthers collapsing just short of the finish line and crawling the last few yards to the end. And for a bit of fun why not look up the video of when the man who ran 26.2 miles dressed as ‘Big Ben’ finally got to the end – but couldn’t fit through the finishing gate! Of course the race was as much about the local heroes from all over the country as the elite international sports people. All the people who run raise recognition and money for a huge variety of charities. From our own locality, Sherford residents were cheering on their own star runner Mel, racing for local charity Jeremiah’s Journey and doing us all proud in the process. In advance of the main race, we actually had a Sherford mini-marathon the day before, where people of all ages were encouraged to run a mile around the nearby King George V playing fields, all in aid of Jeremiah’s Journey. I just about managed to keep up with our seven-yearold pacesetters over the mile, although I wasn’t good for much else for the rest of the day! Perhaps running is your thing, but it certainly isn’t mine. What’s more, I’d be willing to bet that there would be far fewer people putting their names down for the London Marathon or the Plymouth Half Marathon if it wasn’t for the charity sponsorship, and the medal and hero’s welcome each runner receives at the finish line. Extending this out to life in general, it may cause us to ask, “What is waiting for us at our finish line?” Probably the thought behind the question is that it had better be worth all the pain and struggle along the way! In Sherford Community Church we have spent the last month looking through chapter 15 of Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian church (a part of the Bible), which is all about what happens when we die. And we have found good news there! Because if Jesus really did rise from the dead, then we know what is in store for us too: a wonderful everlasting life to look forward to. In marathon terminology, if we are running for Jesus, we can keep going, even through the hardest miles, because we have the most amazing prize to look forward to at the finish line. If you want to know more, why not join us one Sunday morning? If you have any questions about Sherford life, or if you would like to chat more about life beyond the finish line, please contact me at tom@ sherfordchurch.net

Matthew O’Connor pictured with a member of the Taylor Wimpey sales team
A Plymouth family say they couldn’t be prouder to be part of their new community after relocating to the new development in Sherford. Looking for a home that offered more space, Matthew O’Connor, 34, moved to Sherford with his young family after selling their barn conversion in South Devon. Using the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme, the family was able to buy a five-bedroom Willow townhouse from Taylor Wimpey with just a 5% deposit. Matthew said: “I’d heard a lot of positive rumours about Sherford but my first
impressions were that it was amazing. I’d never seen anything like it. The homes were completely different to what you’d normally see in a new build.” Matthew added: “I absolutely love the Willow - the brickwork, the height of the ceilings, the sash windows - and every room has so much space, and the kids are definitely happy that we’ve turned one of the five bedrooms into a playroom for them. Sherford itself is a pleasure to live in and we feel very proud to call it home. The best thing about the development is simply being a part of it. So many people say we’re lucky to live here.”
Melissa Langton, sales and marketing director at Taylor Wimpey Exeter, said: “It’s always brilliant to hear about our happy customers. “Anyone who has visited Sherford already will know how impressive the design of our new homes is and the Willow is a real highlight of the development. “At Taylor Wimpey we’re proud of both the quality of the homes we provide and the initiatives we offer to help make purchasing one of our homes as easy as possible.” For more information visit www. taylorwimpey.co.uk.

cause. My hair is my signature and a bad hair day is just generally a bad day so the last thing I wanted to do was to shave it off. “I’m really close with my mum, we’re like best friends. So to see her going through this and to lose all her hair, it’s heart-wrenching. I don’t want to see my mum like that and I don’t think anyone else would either.” On Mother’s Day weekend, Kairen did the honours of shaving off Josiah’s full head of hair in front of family and friends.
They visited the Mustard Tree together recently to present a cheque for an amazing £6,710. The Mustard Tree is planning to fund a dietitian one day a week for patients undergoing treatment. Josiah’s generous donation will be able to fund a dietitian for almost 12 months.“ They’re an amazing charity,” Josiah continued. “They help everyone affected by cancer, whether you’re going through treatment or know someone who is.”
Josiah in hair-raising fund raising for Derriford Mustard Tree Josiah Carter from Newton Ferrers has donated a staggering £6,710 to the Mustard Tree after shaving off his hair to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre at Derriford Hospital.
Last year, Josiah’s mum, Kairen, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a mastectomy, but unfortunately, the cancer spread to her lymph nodes and required chemotherapy. “Since I first shared the news about mum on social media, we were overwhelmed by all the loving and supportive messages we received,” said Josiah.“I thought this was a real chance to harness all this support and to try and do some good for others who are fighting a similar battle. “I wanted to do something visible to encourage people to donate to such a worthy

Plympton salon honoured for their fundraising efforts The owner and staff of a Plympton hair and beauty salon are celebrating after receiving recognition at a national awards ceremony.
The Hair & Beauty Community Awards run by the National Hairdressers Federation and the National Beauty Federation (NHF/NBF) took place at a reception held at the Houses of Parliament in May. The awards were launched in 2019 to recognise and promote the work hair salons, barbershops and beauty salons do to support their local communities. Kelly Tolhurst, Minister for Small Business, Paul Uppal, the Small Business Commissioner, Mark Pawsey and many other MPs attended the Hair & Beauty Community Awards to learn more about the sector and their contribution to high streets. The reception was also attended by hair and beauty business owners from across the country who were invited to attend as a result of entering and being shortlisted. The firm reached the finals in recognition of their charity work. Throughout 2018 Skin Deep Hair raised money and held a charity ball for the charities Ava’s Fund and Pregnancy Crisis Care. In total they raised more than £14000 for these two charities. Nicola Willson owner of Skin Deep Hair said: “These charities are close to our hearts after they helped support one of our stylists, Kayley, and her partner Gareth when they delivered their baby girl Ava Rose Hendy still born. It’s been an honour to be able to help these charities continue their work and we will continue to support them. “We’re feeling overwhelmed at the support we have received from customers and friends and family of the salon. We will continue to support our amazing charities - Pregnancy Crisis Care and Ava’s fund. Skin Deep won a highly commended award for their impressive fund-raising achievements which was presented to Nicola and Kathryn Kaye. Finalists came from across the whole of the UK. Nicola added: “It was an emotional event listening to why and what salons across the UK have done to help within their communities. I am so proud to be a part of the hair and beauty industry and to have received this award for my salon team’s efforts. “The community keeps small businesses like ours successful and to be able to give back is something the whole team takes pride in. “It was a nice bonus for us to be welcomed into the Houses of Parliament to sip Pimms and enjoy afternoon tea over looking the Thames from the Terrace.” Read more about the two charities at www.pregnancycrisiscare.org.uk and www. facebook.com/AvaHWilliams2016

Plymouth’s best local taxi firm serving residents across Plymouth taking you anywhere you want to go across the city!
The state-of-the-art facility will be built on the east of the city adjacent to Drake Memorial Park off Merafield Road near the Stag Lodge entrance to Saltram Park. The designs have been produced by local architects Stride Treglown and Aecom show single-storey buildings nestled in green spaces with water pooled around the ceremony rooms. Inside, light and open ceremony spaces with large windows are in keeping with the desire to provide a modern quality facility. The plans have been developed with insights from the public and the funeral industry received during consultation events held last year. Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “The granting of planning permission marks an important milestone in this project. I look forward to seeing work start later this year.” The new facility will incorporate two ceremony spaces providing differing seating capacity to cater for larger funerals and with the flexibility to accommodate a diversity of faiths and cultures. The two ceremony rooms will seat approximately 200 people with time slots for funerals generally between 9am to 5pm on weekdays. There will also be a bereavement suite and ancillary café located at the site entrance, providing refreshments to relatives and close friends of the deceased, prior to or following the ceremonies. It will feature three modern cremators with the latest abatement equipment to provide clean emissions. Also included are waiting room facilities, toilets, book of remembrance area and flower room, a reception with meeting room for sensitive discussions, along with landscaped grounds to include memorial gardens and reflection spaces, with public realm planting. It is proposed that approximately 10 staff will be on site at any one time, with a total of 18 staff being employed across the wider bereavement service. The new crematorium will replace the existing crematoria at Weston Mill and Efford, owing to their age and outdated facilities.

Plympton nursing home celebrates CQC rating Meadowside and St Francis Nursing Home in Plympton has announced that it received an overall rating of ‘good’ in a recent CQC inspection.
David and Gina Smallridge, the home’s owners and registered providers, said they were very pleased with the outcome. In July of 2017 the home had been placed in special measures with an ‘inadequate’ rating. A new management team was assembled and the home worked with its loyal staff team to improve the standards and the quality of experience for residents. With drive and passion the home invested its energy into improving the quality of experience for everyone. Residents and staff remained the focus for the home’s managers as they strived to improve standards. CQC rated the home ‘outstanding’ for care and gave an overall rating of ‘good’ in the other four key areas. The inspection report quotes: “People were at the heart of the service, they were truly respected, valued as individuals and were empowered in their care… People were cared for and supported in a service which had a strong and visible person-centred culture.” The report also said: “People were truly respected and valued as individuals and as partners in their care in an exceptional service.” Earlier this year the home celebrated winning the Peoples’ Choice award in the annual Plymouth City Council ‘Excellence in Care’ awards ceremony. The award recognised the home’s activity coordinators Debbie Cunningham and Gemma Wright who were described as being truly outstanding in their job role. The relative who nominated them said: “They are two diamonds in the organisation sprinkling gold dust over everyone.” He added: “Their warmth and understanding of everyone is exceptional.” David and Gina said that they are very proud of the home, their staff and their recent achievements.
Back to school for Plymstock congregation After more than 50 years of meeting at Plymstock Chapel, its Sunday congregation has moved premises.
In 1968 an old telephone exchange was purchased and refurbished by a group of Christians with the support of a church in Plympton. This building has received thousands of visitors over the years but for a number of years recently, its size has been an issue on the minds of the people who meet there. When the church leaders spoke to Plymstock School earlier this year the school was very welcoming to the idea of hiring its main hall to be used for Sunday services.
Since Palm Sunday on April 14 Plymstock Chapel has been meeting in Plymstock School - just across the road from where it met before, but now they have the opportunity to grow and make more people welcome. Everything else that happens at Plymstock Chapel is continuing in the chapel building on Church Road. So, mothers and toddlers on a Monday morning, the student drop-in after school on a Monday, the various bible studies and groups that meet through the week are all there as normal. Keep up to date on the website at www.plymstockchapel.co.uk or its Facebook page.
Vital help for people with long term health conditions Improving Lives Plymouth delivers a free, four week course called ‘My Health, My Way’ which helps people develop knowledge, skills and confidence to selfmanage the challenges of living with a long term condition (LTC).
The course is delivered as part of the Longterm Conditions Self Management service at Improving Lives. Nichola Royal lives with the chronic pain of fibromyalgia (also known as central sensitisation disorder) and she was a delegate on one of the courses held earlier
this year at Improving Lives Plymouth’s Mannamead Wellbeing Hub. Nichola’s job as a biomedical scientist with the NHS became too much for her shortly after the birth of her baby. Chronic fatigue, pain and sensory overload were eventually diagnosed as fibromyalgia after she used her scientific skills to narrow down the options and ask her GP to confirm. She found it hard to explain to her family, and was getting defeated by her inability to do the things she used to do until she was referred to the Long Term Conditions Self Management team. She joined nine others with a wide range of LTCs and received support from trained volunteers, most of whom live with long term conditions themselves and so have empathy for course delegates. “It was a relief to be able to talk about my condition with others who had similar experiences,” she said. “It’s a safe place to find tools to manage life.” People attending the courses (soon to be held in a wider selection of community
venues) can include carers as well as those with an LTC. During weekly, 3½ hour workshops, people gain skills to manage their condition; they set achievable goals, meet others and talk about their experiences. For someone who is isolated and whose family can often become frustrated with them, the adaptable course can be life changing; it helps them to explain their difficulties to others in a way they can understand. “The course helps you find ways to explain how you’re feeling to those who love you but often don’t get it,” said Nichola. “It gives you some hope that you are normal, just a different normal. “I learned to set achievable goals for myself,” she said, “and to accept ‘that’s OK for me’; it helps you become more positive and kind to yourself.” Long term conditions self management coordinator, Lorraine Grave said that they are looking to expand into more venues, so they need more volunteers. “Ideally volunteers will have their own experience of living with a long term condition; full training is given and we expect them to facilitate two, four week courses a year. The courses are very informal and rewarding - they really take the pressure off the delegates and help them find a better quality of life.” To find out more or to apply as a volunteer, go to www.improvinglivesplymouth.org. uk or call the Long Term Conditions SelfManagement team on 01752 201892, or email self-management@improvinglivesplymouth.

Friends of Ford Park are holding a Hog Roast and Victorian Fancy Dress event on June 15. Why not go along, join in the fun and dress as your favourite Victorian character. Entrance is 50p and the fun event gets under way at 12 noon.
A new feature this year was the ‘Human Fruit Machine’ which caught the eye of a number of those turning out for the event. Various well-known figures in the community took a turn at being the humans in the ‘machine’ as they randomly pulled items of plastic fruit from a bag with punters hoping each would select the same item so they could win a prize. There was live music during the day including a set performed by Plympton’s Rustic Busker, Jay Urquhart. A selection of vintage cars were on display in the Livewell Clinic Car Park, including a Swift motor car from the early 1900s which was displaying an original 1959 tax disc. Swift was a motor manufacturer based in Coventry and made cars from 1900 to 1931. ‘Nothing will change unless we do’ Story by Erin Downes
Younger generations have started to stand up to fight the devastating and irreversible impacts of climate change around the world.
The #YouthStrike4Climate movement has inspired thousands of students to protest against the seemingly lack of government action to combat the climate crisis putting futures in jeopardy. In the wake of these protests and the revelation that the human race could have just 12 years to reverse the serious climate change humans have caused, students at Plymstock School have jumped into action to help make the necessary change happen. Ten members of the school’s Eco Club were at the heart of this push, spending recent weeks focusing on how everyone can become more sustainable to help limit any further climate issues. Towards the start of their work, they spent time delivering an assembly to Year 7 students about environmental pollution and what the school and individuals can do to help tackle the issues facing the world. With 200 species going extinct every day and water shortages affecting up to 360 million people, according to UK Student Climate Network, education and action is crucial to secure a future for younger generations. As a group, the Eco Club has already put some of these new initiatives into practice, collecting many bags of litter from around the school site
as part of their weekly litter picks. They have also spent time educating other students on the issue of climate change and raising awareness of the issues through their participation in the school’s drive to become part of the Eco Schools Network. This educational programme is run globally with around 20 million children across 67 countries taking part in helping to improve environmental awareness. For almost 25 years, the programme has been empowering children to drive change through a simply seven-step framework to achieve an international Eco-Schools Green Flag award. Plymstock School’s involvement is being led by teachers Olly Hurd-Thomas and Andrew Schindler who have been creating the Eco Committee to help
improve the immediate school environment, raise environmental awareness and develop pupils’ skills. The students involved in this Eco Club have recently been given the opportunity alongside the Marine Champions Project to discuss the matter further as part of the Wembury Beach Conference. The conference gave 120 pupils from 10 schools the chance to have their voices heard in conversations about different aspects of marine conservation, all whilst learning more about our beautiful planet. Students were able to work alongside organisations such as the National Marine Aquarium about plastic pollution, The Shark Trust about the dangers of overfishing and Devon
Wildlife Trust, who discussed climate change as a wider issue. The students involved investigated the impacts of climate change along our local coastline whilst also developing further strategies to make a difference to our environment. Later this year, once they have had the chance to implement all of their initiatives, they will also be presenting their work at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, allowing them to continue to inspire and encourage others. Rob Diment, headteacher of Plymstock School said “The students are a real credit to their generation and it is great to see an active group so keen to address the issues many are unaware of. With continued support, I’m sure they will go on to help make Plymstock an even stronger school. Well done, Max, Ollie, Ryan, Rowena, Lucie, Jess, Charlie, Sam, Amelie and Leo.”

Impact of lost pets grows on Woodside sanctuary Plymouth’s Woodside Animal Welfare Trust has been taking in pets for decades, and while many are bought to the charity due to personal circumstances, lost pets are proving to be a growing area of concern. This National Microchipping Month, Lisa Darcy, deputy manager, said: “We could have reunited pets with their owners far quicker if they’d been microchipped.” With the highest number of lost pets being cats due to their independent nature, Woodside’s telephone incident book has recorded 78 cats as missing in Plymouth and surrounding areas in the last six months. Perhaps the most obvious method for returning lost felines, a microchip can allow vets and shelters to scan and receive details about an owner and allow a simple reunion. However, it is important to make sure your details are always kept up to date with the database company. When a pet is lost, owners and members of the public can help too. Here are just a few things you can do when a cat is lost or found: • Cats can often be lured home by smell. If your cat has gone missing, try hanging out its
bedding or placing litter trays outdoors. • If you suspect a returning cat is a stray, avoid feeding it; they could be an opportunist and may decide that your home is better than their own perfectly good and loving one. They may also be on dietary medication or a special diet, and treats could cause them to become ill.
Lost cat Sammy
• Don’t assume that a skinny cat is a stray. Cats can live for over 20 years and, while healthy and well cared for, may not look it. They may also be on medication or have medical issues that can affect their weight. • While also promoting neutering and spaying, the Trust highlight how entire cats are more likely to distance roam to look for a mate, and can be seriously hurt during territorial fights. It is recommended that your pet is neutered for this reason, amongst many other benefits. Cats aside, Woodside still cares for 19 different species of pet, and felines aren’t the only animals found and bought to the Elfordleigh Sanctuary. While stray cats have been in the highest number, Woodside have also taken in other animals who have been found too. Just this year alone, abandoned or escaped hamsters and rabbits have been taken in, while the charity’s welfare team have also assisted in the capture and reunion of a peacock and lamb with their rightful owners. Menopause day aims to help women take control of the change Only half of women who suffer from menopausal symptoms ever seek professional help. Sally Fletcher, a nurse from Derriford, is going through the menopause herself following cancer treatment and was shocked at how little information is available.
Now Sally has joined forces with local GPs, mental health specialists, nutritionists and local businesses to organise a day dedicated to the menopause for the women of Plymouth and the surrounding areas. The event is hosted by Emmanuel Church in Mannamead on Saturday June 22, from 10am to 3.30pm. Speakers will talk about the physical and psychological effects of the menopause as well as the effect the menopause can have on a woman’s identity. Following a menopause friendly lunch, there will be workshops on sleep, nutrition, the workplace, HRT, relationships and re-inventing your life. Participants will also be able to see displays from Livewell Southwest, Plymouth Options and the Royal Osteoporosis Society. Confidence about body image can be a casualty of the menopause, so Sally has invited Olwyn Friday of Revive Beauty and Esther Friday aka Girl Friday make-up artist along to the event to help inspire women, to promote the concept of self-care and encourage women in their busy, demanding lives, to take a little time out for themselves. Sally’s message to women going through the menopause is clear. “Please don’t suffer in silence, help is available and you are not alone. So many of us are going through the menopause and I hope by coming together we can feel more in control of this stage in our lives,” she said. The day is being financially supported by Transforming Plymouth Together, a Church of England initiative born out of the Poverty in Plymouth report. To book a ticket for the day, go to https:/bit.ly/2SBPCxJ or search Eventbrite or follow the link from www. emmanuelplymouth.co.uk or phone the parish office on 01752 260317 . Tickets cost £5 which covers all refreshment and lunch.

Friends support The Box’s Native American art commission
Big date at Pavilions Introduces for rising young Plymouth band
Ramona Peters with the Wampanoag Cooking Pot Photo: SmokeSygnals
The Friends of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery (FPCMAG) have donated £2500 to The Box for its first-ever work by a Native American artist.
The funding is for a ceramic cooking pot based on the historic designs that would have been used inside traditional Wampanoag dwellings in the 1600s. The pot will be one of the many items on display in The Box’s ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition when it opens in 2020, and is being made by Ramona Peters. Peters, also known as Nosapocket, is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation. Working in partnership with Wampanaog cultural agency SmokeSygnals, she has already started developing the piece and is making great progress. Once the ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition has finished, the pot will become part of The Box’s permanent collections. Stefan Aloszko, chair of the Friends said: “We immediately recognised the greater cultural significance of Ramona Peters’ elegant Wampanoag cooking pot. It’s a work that allows us to appreciate the universal importance of the shared bonds that we experience through culinary heritage and subsequent ideas of home, community and conversation. “For the Friends, this piece is a most welcome addition to the city’s permanent collections.” Members of the The Friends recently visited The Box’s construction site for a hard hat tour and officially presented a cheque to The Box chief executive Paul Brookes and exhibition curator Jo Loosemore. Paul said: “The Friends of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery have helped fund many important acquisitions for our collections over the years. “We’re very grateful for their continued support, particularly for an object which is so symbolic and which will be a real legacy from our Mayflower 400 activities.” To stay up-to-date with all The Box’s Mayflower 400 related news and blog posts visit www.theboxplymouth.com/ mayflower400.
One of Plymouth’s fastest rising young bands will play their biggest headline show in June, when they appear at Pavilions Introduces. The Native is made up of Charlie Noordewier, Ben Andrew, Tom Booth and Harry Youngs, who are all 18, and Max Williams, who is 21. The boys are all local to the Plymouth area and all but Max are studying A Levels at Devonport High School for Boys. Max works for his family’s ice cream business based on Dartmoor. The formation of the band can be traced back to Charlie and Ben writing songs during their lunch breaks and in between lessons whilst studying for their GCSEs. They were quickly joined by their two friends Tom and Harry at the beginning of 2018 after the group of school mates realised they had a real passion for music. In June 2018, the band were lucky enough
to win the public vote to play at MTV’s Ocean City Sounds 2018 but were short of a drummer. Max was known from previous gigs and when asked, he stepped up and took on the role with only a week’s notice. Since this he has become a key part of the band, and has solidified the line up now known as ‘The Native’. With this line up the band has gone from strength to strength, focusing on playing as many shows as possible and writing new material. The boys describe their music as ‘Indie/ Alternative’ and their sound has been likened to artists such as Fleetwood Mac, James Bay, Amber Run and many others. Last year saw the release of their debut EP ‘Fall Down’ which has just reached over one million streams on Spotify. They have played at some of the UK’s major festivals including opening up for Bastille at MTV’s Ocean City Sounds, Boardmasters, Port Eliot,
Leopallooza and Tunes in the Dunes. Their upcoming gig at Plymouth Pavilions on June 22 is their biggest headline show yet and is incredibly important for the band as it will start off their summer season of shows. Band member Charlie said: “It’s crucial that the Pavilions Introduces shows are supported by the community as it gives local bands the opportunity to play at one of the South West’s premier venues. “With the closure of venues such as The Hub, support of Plymouth’s local music scene is needed now more than ever. This is a great honour for the band as we will be playing on the same stage as many of our idols we have seen at the Pavilions over the years.” The band hope to see as many of their fans and new faces as possible. Tickets are available from PlymouthPavilions.com. To follow the band’s progress with their career and for any gig/news updates visit wearethenative.com.

Lord Mayor’s Day returns to the city centre on Saturday May 25 welcoming the new Lord Mayor of Plymouth to the role.
This year, the family-friendly event is themed around science and the future, with a world of discoveries to be made and lots of scientific, technological happenings. The star of the show this year is the eight foot tall Titan the Robot, who will be appearing on stage and in the Piazza twice during the day. There’s a huge programme of entertainment planned including the ‘Planet Trail’, supported by the Plymouth City Centre Company. The trail will entertain children on a journey around the city centre with the chance to win amazing prizes including an Amazon Fire Kids tablet. For an immersive experience, families can step inside the Science Dome to explore the surface of Mars and the Moon via the 360 degree projector, which uses real NASA
surface terrain data, or try on the National Marine Aquarium’s Virtual Reality headset for a virtual dive around one of their tanks. On the stage, visitors can enjoy performances from local dance and theatre groups and choirs including the Military Kids Choir. There will also be lots of activities taking place on the Piazza and in Guildhall Square, including free circus skills workshops and appearances from the Plymouth Party Princesses. Two alien visitors will also be making a visit to Plymouth from outer space, interacting with young visitors using humour and physical theatre. Community groups and charities will be showcasing the work they do in Plymouth with stalls set out along New George Street and Armada Way, alongside a number of food and craft stalls. Councillor Pete Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Lord Mayor’s Day is a brilliant day out for the whole family, with lots of exciting activities for children of
all ages to get stuck into and enjoy. “But it’s also an important celebration of all the fantastic people, charities and groups in our city that work hard, supporting our communities and helping to make it a great place to live.” As a new addition to this year’s event, free tours of the Council House will be given throughout the day by the Lord Mayor’s Macebearers. Visitors can discover more about this impressive building and the intriguing artefacts kept there, as well as learning all about the role of the Lord Mayor in Plymouth (advance booking required). Councillor Richard Ball is currently Lord Mayor Designate and will be officially inaugurated as Lord Mayor of Plymouth on May 17, ahead of the event. Councillor Terri Beer will be Deputy Lord Mayor for the year. Lord Mayor’s Day takes place from 10am to 4pm on May 25. For more information and the full event schedule, head to visitplymouth.co.uk.
...and council shortlisted in national awards Plymouth City Council has been shortlisted in the Co-operative Council of the Year category at the Co-operative of the Year Awards. The Co-operative Council award, sponsored by the Co-operative Councils’ Innovation Network, recognises the best practice demonstrated by local authorities and celebrates the great work delivered at a local level. Plymouth is a co-operative council, with co-operation one of the key values in the Corporate Plan, ensuring that the council works together with partners in order to best serve the interests of the city and its communities. This joint partnership working has led to the creation of the new Plymouth Plan and Joint Local Plan, as well as Crowdfund Plymouth and support for social enterprises. Plymouth City Council has also played a key role in the creation of new co-operative businesses including PEC Renewables, CATERed and Four Greens Community Trust. Last year, Plymouth became the first
council committed to doubling the size of its co-operative economy. Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Co-operatives are a great driver for positive economic growth which benefits the whole community and there’s some amazing work already being done in Plymouth. “We’re committed to supporting the city’s co-operative economy and are incredibly proud to be one of just six councils shortlisted for this award. “The winners will be decided by a public vote, so we’re asking you to please cast a vote for us – it would be such a fantastic achievement and a celebration of all the good work done by Plymouth’s cooperatives.” There are 23 co-operative enterprises already based in Plymouth with a combined turnover of £18.6 million and membership of over 9,500 people. By 2025, the aim is for Plymouth to have double the number of co-operatives, the turnover, the number of members and the number of employees.
In November 2018, the Council adopted an action plan which includes strategic actions designed to promote and support co-operatives which has so far included innovative funding, hosting staff and community asset transfers. Plymouth City Council will also be celebrating Co-operatives Fortnight from June 24 to July 7, with a programme of events and activities. The awards are organised by Co-operatives UK, the network for Britain’s thousands of member-owned businesses. Ed Mayo, secretary general of Co-operatives UK said, “Judges were particularly impressed with the diversity of entries for the awards and the shortlisted co-ops all have very inspiring stories to share. We wish them the very best of luck in the public vote.” To vote for Plymouth City Council, go to www.uk.coop/COTY_Shortlist. Voting closes at midnight on June 13. The winners wil be announced at the Co-op Congress event in Manchester on June 21.
This year the event starts and finishes on The Hoe on Saturday July 13 and organisers are hoping that the fabulous turn out last year will be repeated - or even bettered this year. Last year a total of 230 walkers took part, covering either the 5km or 10km route around some of the city’s favourite locations. Their efforts raised a total of £11,000. One of the walkers who took part in last year’s event said: “I just loved the whole atmosphere. My sister who has Crohn’s Disease was able to talk to others about it and they all knew how one another were feeling. It was such an enjoyable day.” People can register as an individual or as a team and will receive a free t-shirt with the £14 registration fee. Children are £7 to register and they also get a free WALK IT t-shirt. Walkers are being challenged to raise £100 or more - a sum which could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis. Walkers will explore the city’s sights before returning to the event village at The Hoe for a great afternoon of fun, food and entertainment. Organisers are also keen to hear from volunteers who can help on the day. Nationally WALK IT has grown massively from 3,500 participants to over 5,000 and this year it is expected that more than 7,000 people will be part of these incredible events around the country, helping to raise crucial awareness and funds for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). These chronic, debilitating illnesses affect mainly young people, and there is no cure. WALK IT is one of the fastest growing charity events in the UK and every 30 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis. The chances are most people will know or work with someone who has IBD. For information or to register visit www. crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/walkit

Missing wallaby returns home A wallaby which went missing from a special education facility on the edge of Plympton has returned home.
Bespoke Engaging Educational Services (BEES) at Newnham have a number of wallabies and two of them went missing on the evening of May 8 after being spooked by something. One was quickly located at nearby Newnham Park and returned to its ‘mob’ but despite a search continuing overnight and into the morning the second wallaby could not be located. Later the next day, however, the absconder was seen trying to get back in with his fellows in their paddock. The returning wallaby was noticed by Ryan from Longcause Special School who regularly send pupils to BEES. Ryan along with a fellow pupil from Longcause and a team from BEES safely guided ‘Jimmy’ back into the paddock to be with his kinsfolk. Nathan Potts from BEES said: “We’d like to thank those members of the public that took the trouble to contact us with sightings, and who sent us messages of support on social media. We’d also like to thank our neighbours at Newnham Park for allowing us access to their grounds so we could expand our search. Both of the animals are well and seem unfazed by their escapade.”
Appeal for foster carers in Pymouth Plymouth City Council has joined forces with councils across Devon on a mission to find people with time, energy, motivation and a spare bedroom who are able to care for some of Devon’s most vulnerable children and young people as part of this year’s Foster Care Fortnight campaign from May 13 to 26.

Thumbs up for new road layout Over two thirds of respondents to an online survey have indicated a controversial mini roundabout at the top of Cot Hill has improved traffic flow in the area. The roundabout was recently installed after more than five weeks of roadworks at the site to recontour the pavements and paint the mini roundabout onto the road surface. Some locals had preferred an alternative proposal of simply changing the traffic flow at the junction in favour of traffic exiting right toward Haye Road and having give way lines across Merafield Road for traffic coming from Underwood.
However, despite some people saying they didn’t feel it would make a difference, the roundabout was the favoured option in a past consultation with residents in the area. Since the work has finally been done and the new layout bedded in, the majority of people now seem to accept queues at the top of Cot Hill have reduced as a result and that the scheme has proved to be an improvement on traffic flow at the junction. 463 people voted in an online poll conducted by the Plympton Podcast in which respondents were asked of the new layout “Has this improved traffic flow along Cot Hill and Merafield Road?” 316 (68%) said Yes and 147 (32%) replied No. (Story courtesy of the Plympton Podcast)

Foster Care Fortnight is a national campaign which raises the profile of fostering and encourages more people to consider this rewarding career. Nationally, 9,070 new foster families are needed in the next 12 months alone to care for a range of children, with the greatest need being for foster carers for older children, sibling groups, disabled children and unaccompanied asylum seeking children. The overarching theme of Foster Care Fortnight 2019 is ‘change a future’. The theme reflects the fact that foster care doesn’t just transform the lives of the young people who are fostered; it also has the power to change the lives of foster carers, their families and all those who are involved in fostering. Fostering can be for as little as a few weeks or a few months until a child is able to return home to their family or longer term until a child grows up and is able to move on to independence. Foster carers can be single or couples; with or without children; retired, unemployed or working. What matters most is that potential carers have time, space, commitment, patience, a caring nature and skills to work with children and their families. “Fostering is immensely rewarding,” said Plymouth based foster carer Rosemary Kinder. “You can have difficult days. Many children who come into care find it difficult to trust and have confidence in the adults around them. As a carer you help promote self- confidence by sharing your life, home and providing opportunities and experiences that hopefully enable each child to reach their full potential. “You have so much support from the local authority. It’s not like you are left on your own to deal with things, there is always someone there to help, 24 hours a day. “But you have to go in with your eyes open; there are some very difficult times but being a foster carer is amazingly rewarding.” Rosemary is encouraging anyone in Plymouth who is passionate about providing support for children and young people to contact their local council and discuss the possibility of becoming a foster carer. Andrea Powell, service manager for Family Placement at Plymouth City Council, said: “There are still many myths about who can foster but all that really matters is that carers have the time, commitment, space and personal qualities to offer a secure and stable home to a child or children who have been separated from their birth family. “We all know that a childhood is too short to waste and we’re looking for people who can open their home and heart to a child who has had a difficult start in life and to help them to reach their potential.” Full training and support is given to foster carers, who are matched to one or more of the different foster care schemes, depending on what suits their lifestyles and commitments. Carers are also paid an allowance and receive a competitive fostering fee. Training and support is an ongoing commitment to all foster carers. Anybody interested in finding out more about Fostering for Plymouth can contact the fostering team on 01752 308762 or visit www. fosterforplymouth.co.uk

RESIDENTS GIVE THUMBS UP TO NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN
Voters in Plympton St Mary created local history on May 2 when more than 90% of those voting decided to back the Plympton St Mary Neighbourhood Plan, put together by a group of local residents, in Plymouth’s first ever planning referendum.
The plan will now be adopted as part of Plymouth City Council’s planning policy for the ward. The adoption of the plan is the culmination of three years of hard work for members of the Plympton St Mary Neighbourhood Forum who exercised their rights under the Localism Act to formulate the plan and ultimately bring it to a
referendum in the ward. They were assisted and supported along the way by ward councillors and officers from Plymouth City Council. The plan tackled issues such as housing, leisure, well-being, heritage, green spaces, transport and education. The forum held a full consultation over several weeks around eighteen months prior to the referendum involving exhibition meetings in Woodford, Colebrook and Plympton Library. These meetings attracted a good attendance and the forum took into account hundreds of views given about the initial draft plan before completing the referendum version. In the three weeks leading up to the referendum volunteers delivered
over 5000 double sided leaflets about the Neighbourhood Plan and the referendum to every home in the Plympton St Mary Ward. Just over 36% of electors in the ward turned out to vote on the referendum question “Do you want Plymouth City Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Plympton St Mary to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?” A simple majority of votes cast was needed to determine the issue and in the event the answer was overwhelmingly in favour with 3,240 people voting yes to the question and just 344 voting no. The scouting parade leaving St Mary’s Church at the end of the service
Scouts celebrate St George’s Day A St George’s Day Service was held for Plym District Scouts at Plympton St Mary’s Church on Sunday April 28 in the presence of Sir Gary and Lady Streeter and the 2017/18 Stannator Andrew Hill who was deputising for current Stannator Natalie Harrison.
Beavers, cubs and scouts proceeded into the church holding their standards as a processional hymn was played. Prebendary Robert Harris gave a captivating address, getting the congregation to identify a number of flags which came up on a display screen inside the church. With varying degrees of recognition flags such as those for Brazil, Ethiopia and Catalonia in Spain came onto the screen as the congregation mused on what the relevance of all these flags was.
The penny came close to dropping as the England flag was revealed and Prebendary Harris eventually put the congregation out of their suspense by informing them that Saint George is the patron saint of all those locations and that the relevance of this to the service was that he is also the patron saint of Scouting. During the course of the service Graham Barnes was presented with a 20 year service certificate for his involvement with Scouting, Ross Drummond received one for 10 years and Emma Drummond was recognised for completing her training as a section leader. A collection was taken in aid of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a military charity dedicated to supporting children who have lost a parent serving in the British Armed Forces. Wheelie good challenge for teams
Registration for the second annual Every Ride Counts challenge is now open. The workplace cycle challenge, organised by Plymouth City Council’s Plymotion team, pits teams from organisations in Plymouth against each other to achieve the most bike trips through their daily commutes. The ‘wheelie’ good competition runs during June and takes in Bike Week during June 8 to 16. It’s all about encouraging more people to get out and about on their bike, reducing car trips in Plymouth throughout June and beyond. Last summer’s challenge had 86 employees from ten different organisations making up 23 teams to take part in the challenge. A team of four cyclists from Babcock International won Best Team in Every Ride Counts 2018. This year’s challenge
will see teams competing again for the top place, and each bike trip they take, whether a long or short journey, counts. More prizes are up for grabs, including the Every Ride Counts Workplace Award, nominated by employees for being a cycle-friendly employer. Registration to enter Every Ride Counts closes on June 7. Increasing the number of people cycling to work and leaving the car at home can improve the health and wellbeing of staff, cut down travel costs to work and help solve limited office parking spaces. It also reduces traffic
congestion and leads to lower carbon emission. One of last year’s participants said: “I have often thought about riding my bike to work, but always found an excuse not to! This was just what I needed to get me to take the plunge and I have carried on cycling into work now the Plymotion event is over and intend to do so until the weather gets pants again!” A prize of £100 worth of vouchers is on offer for best team (four in a team) and best individual. There is also a prize draw of £50 worth of vouchers up for grabs when people register. To find out more about the challenge, go to the Plymotion website or contact Plymotion@ plymouth.gov.uk. You can also follow the Facebook page and Twitter account. Register online at www. plymouth.gov.uk/parkingandtravel/ cycling/everyridecounts2019

Scouts rewarded for life skills Interest in Scouting has increased significantly in recent years with waiting lists now in place to join.
The Plymouth District, which covers everywhere west of the Plym, now has over 800 young people involved in its programmes, supported my 300 adult volunteers. At a recent event to celebrate the highest accolades in scouting, District Commissioner for Plymouth, James Littlejohns, spoke of his heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who form the backbone of the Scouting movement. He said that Scouting is indeed a force to be reckoned with with 11 out of the 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon having been Scouts! The recent awards ceremony, held in Four Greens Community Trust Building in Whitleigh, honoured the young people who had recently completely Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards through Scouts and to bequeath the Queen’s Award for Scouting, the pinnacle of awards for Scouts. Vice Admiral Sir Richard Ibbotson, one of Devon’s Deputy Lord Lieutenants, presented the awards and spoke of his admiration for Scouting, both as a former head of the Royal Navy’s training organisation and as chair of Trustees at the Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust where he sees the added value of achieving such awards in future careers. Awards were presented to Kushla Magee (Bronze DoE), Matthew Noble (Bronze DoE), Tom Perkins (Silver DoE), Zoe Woods (Silver DoE and Chief Scout Diamond Award), Louis Robinson, Matt Bull, Amy Jarvis (Gold DoE), Dino Squara, Kiera Vickery, Beth Little and Cameron Walker (Gold DoE and Queen’s Scout). Scott Fearn was given the Commissioner’s Commendation and the Scouts Dragon Award for camping out every month in the year, and volunteering to support a group of DoE candidates

who were cycling over three days for their awards and desperately needed another person to validate their trip. It was clear the young people loved what they do! Scott seemed to be more than happy under the stars, and Dino, who is studying A levels at Hele’s School and wants to attend drama school explained that Scouting was a great experience. “I’ve been involved since I was five,” said Dino. “I’ve made lots of friends and learnt things I’ll hold onto for life - everything from social skills to fire making.”
Reunion for swimming community
A reunion for who people have been connected with swimming in Plymouth over the last 60 years is taking place in June.
The reunion is for anyone who has been involved with any aspect of swimming either as a swimmer, diver, water polo player, committee member, coach, fundraiser or volunteer. At previous reunions people have come from as far afield as New Zealand, as well as various parts of the UK. This year swimmers from London, Oxford and several other places around the country, including Devon and Cornwall, have confirmed they are attending. The reunion is being held at the Caffeine Club, Tavistock Place on June 22 starting at 7pm. Attendees are welcome to bring a friend or family member for an event which promises to be a night of nostalgia.

When slowing down is important... THE
By Ian Pilkington, Trustee of Cross Rhythms Plymouth
Experience
Slow down. I heard those words at 5am recently. It was in that quiet, inside space where sometimes words drop like whispers of wisdom and pull you up short before you have time to edit them.
Some may say it was the voice of conscience, or self-talk; some may say it was the ‘still, small voice’ of God who speaks to us in the deepest places. Take your pick, but for me I’m going with the still small voice. Slow down. Funny thing to hear, seeing as I’d just woken up. I lay still, thinking over the last few days. I’d taken time out, deliberately to regain lost resources of patience, good temper and kindness. My colleagues at work were very pleased I was doing this. Family too. Slow down. I thought I was, gardening and occasionally thinking of the ‘bigger picture’ of where the business is going outside of the micro detail. But the Voice was softly persistent.
Slow down. I had enjoyed the end result of the work in the gardens, yet that sense of something missing still remained. As I lay there quietly, another question arose out of my heart: ‘Did you enjoy the process?’ The answer – No. I hadn’t enjoyed that very much. I was looking forward to the end of hours of work when I could sit back, crack open a beer and relax in the results and say ‘Aaaaaahhh that’s better.’ Slow down. I was so fixed on the goal that I treated the process as just the way to get there as fast as I could. I had been blessed to take some precious time, time that can’t ever be recovered, Ian Pilkington and instead of enjoying that time I had ploughed through it unheeding. I have no recollection of whether it was warm, sunny (it was) or even if the birds were singing.
So, I’m slowing down. I’ve noticed, as I slow down, that my responses to my children are different. Instead of barking with just enough edge to get their attention and get that job done, I’m a bit gentler. In that space, my youngest (seven going on 16) has started to make her own choices to help around the home and to simply do what she’s asked. Not always (oh Heaven!) but enough to make me realise that when I shortcut quickly to the barked command in order to get the job done, she hasn’t even time to grow in her own choices. Slow down, indeed. Thinking back over the years bringing up her older brothers, I marched them through life from goal to goal; at times I treated relaxing as a task.

Cornerstone Vision has a superb reputation for leaflet distribution throughout Plymouth and the surrounding areas. We are seeking people who can commit to delivering excellent service as part of our high quality team.
So we all missed some simple pleasures. Always moving on to the next task, all of which were undoubtedly important, at least to me. There are definitely times to run, times to focus and times to just dig in and get on with it. But not all the time. As someone who has struggled with mental health issues I know the results of that ‘always on’ mind-set pretty well. I’d prefer to slow down than crash, and I’m enjoying the thought of the people around me benefiting from that, too. Slow down. Last word goes to the Good Book, a promise that there’s a time for all of it and there’s Someone who can replace those lost resources: ‘(God) gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.’ (Isaiah chapter 40 verse 31)
Calling all Plymouth choirs! Mayflower 400 needs you Do you lead a choir or singing group? Your group could be part of a momentous, global event on Plymouth Hoe for the Mayflower 400 commemorations.
2020 is the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage, one of the most influential journeys in global history and a defining moment in the shared history of Britain, the US and the Netherlands. Plymouth was the Mayflower’s final departure point in the UK and the city is the lead partner in the commemorations. As part of Mayflower Week, a major four nations ceremony is being planned for Wednesday 16 September 2020. The ceremony organisers are looking for existing choirs and vocal groups from Plymouth and the surrounding area to take part in the event. While event details are being kept under wraps for now, there will be a new piece of music for the chosen choirs to learn and perform during the ceremony. A wide range of singers are wanted to create a stunning musical performance. This includes people of all ages, backgrounds and differing experience levels – from beginners to fully trained singers. The event offers the chance for a significant number of people to be involved, but to ensure the right balance of singers, choir leaders must complete an online application form for their group to take part. Applications must be submitted by Sunday June 9 and all choirs will be notified of the outcome at the beginning of July 2019. Choir leaders will be required to attend a session to learn the piece of music in January 2020 and then teach it to their groups during normal rehearsals. There will be a full rehearsal in September 2020, just ahead of the main event. For more information visit www. mayflower400uk.org

Prayer Group Tuesdays 9.30am-10.30am (In the Lounge). In all the hustle and bustle of life these days, people struggle to cope, but look to fill that gap in their lives where something is missing. That gap can be filled with the loving family of God in a local church. Giving up a bit of time for regular prayer, together with others, can help you cope with the stresses and worry that life throws at you. We provide a non-judgemental circle of friendship and welcome everyone, regardless of background, luggage and history, to come and seek our friendship. We open our doors every week, for anybody and everybody to walk in freely and pray with us. Every word spoken is treated with the upmost confidence and privacy, along with unconditional friendship. The group, which meets at Chocaccino in the Barbican, first heard about BASICS - which stands for British Association for Immediate Care Schemes - in April last year and after finding out more about the charity’s work decided to fund raise for it. Jude, the Chocaccino knitting group organiser said: ”Although the Knit Group has been going now for several years, it was only three years ago that we discussed the issue of fundraising. “In 2016 we each produced a few Poppies - some in crochet and some knitted. By the end of the venture we produced 100s of them raising around £300 for the British Legion. “We then decided to support on an animal charity called the Cinnamon Trust. During 2017 we raised £200 to enable them to upgrade some of their facilities in Hayle. “So early in 2018 we had a group discussion as to who we would next support? Fatima, in her role as a GP, told us about all the amazing stuff BASICS Devon guys do. So that was us sold!” Jude said they raise the vital funds by knitting, music such as gospel, contemporary, sacred, world folk, pop, funky bass lines etc. No previous experience is necessary and you don’t need to be able to read music as we learn ‘by ear’ and repetition. Come and give us a try and see what you think! Our choir leader is Sarah Pennington and she can be contacted on 01392 437792 or by email plymouthcommunitychoir@ gmail.com. It’s a grand day out at Aardman for Plymouth students! Thirty animation students from Plymouth College of Art have visited Aardman Animations in Bristol for a day of workshops with the internationally-acclaimed animators.
Among the party of BA (Cons) Animation students was Elliot Rowe, a former carpenter and boatbuilder from Elburton, who was so enthused by the hands-on skills offered by Aardman that he returned to Aardman Academy soon after for further modelmaking training. The students attended a workshop led by Jim Parkyn, a senior Model Maker with almost 20 years industry experience. He taught students the process of how to model the Aardman character Morph, first seen on television in the 1976 BBC show Take Hart. He has also worked on animated movies including Shaun the Sheep, Chicken Run and The Pirates! A second workshop was led by Neil Pymer, a creative director at Aardman working on the studio’s interactive and immersive projects. Neil, who was nominated for a BAFTA for his work on BBC’s Escargot Escape Artistes, taught students how to build and prototype their own interactive stories. Elliot said: “I’ve been a fan of Aardman Animations since watching Morph on Art Attack as a boy. Visiting the Aardman studios was a dream come true for me, particularly when senior model maker Jim Parkyn led a workshop on how to make our own Morph models. “Aardman offer such incredible opportunities, because not only do they

teach you these invaluable skills, you’re also getting a chance to work under and network with respected figures in the animation industry. I feel like I took a part of Aardman away with me that will be with me for the rest of my life. “Growing up I struggled at school because of my dyslexia and my family felt like I needed a practical trade, so as a result I became a fully qualified carpenter and boat builder. But I’ve always had a passion for art and animation, and Plymouth College of Art have helped me discover the worlds of stopmotion animation, set and prop fabrication. I’d been working in carpentry since I was 14 years old. “ I’m 27 now, preparing to graduate in BA (Hons) Animation, and because of the skills I picked up along the way I feel like now I can design and build anything.”
Tim Pattinson, senior lecturer and programme leader for BA (Hons) Animation at Plymouth College of Art, said: “One of my first teaching jobs in North America involved bringing a studio pipeline model for animation into a Higher Education environment - creating a pipeline for creating and delivering animation assets to deadline, in the same way that students will be expected to when they go on to work in the industry. “A layout artist from Disney features came to visit us and was blown away by how successfully we’d implemented that live studio model within the classroom. That’s what I’m putting into practice now at Plymouth College of Art, preparing students for work at the big animation studios, which is why we’re so fortunate to have an internationally-respected studio such as Aardman based in Bristol, so close to us. “We’re very grateful to everybody at Aardman for making us feel so welcome and giving students such an excellent opportunity to network and learn invaluable skills.”
