Theatre We Will Rock You! (And They Did)!
Students from across all year groups at Saltash Community School, performed with such vitality and enthusiasm for this year’s performance of We Will Rock You recently, directed by Emily Venner.
In short, the story is set 300 years in the future in a futurist and globally corporate world. Planet Earth has been renamed the Planet Mall and is controlled by The Globalsoft Corporation who are in control of what its audience can listen to. The youth are called The Ga Ga Kids, who are forced to watch the same movies, listen to computer generated music, wear the same clothes and hold the same thoughts and opinions. Furthermore, instruments are forbidden and rock music is unheard of.
This juke box musical, (written by Ben Elton), captures many of Queen’s greatest hits spanning over five decades, and is a futuristic tale which everyone can enjoy – from romance, slapstick humour, friendships and some dark aspects too!
Just some of Queen’s songs that were sang by the talented cast were Killer Queen, Radio Gaga, Under Pressure and Another One Bites the Dust and of course not to forget Bohemian Rhapsody (the finale piece and sung with huge significance).
It was apparent that the audience enjoyed the familiar pulse and rhythm of all the songs judging by the synchronised feet tapping and clapping of hands. The cast of We Will Rock You! presented an exceptionally well-rehearsed and dynamic performance, which was apparent throughout, with their high performance energies involving quick and precise cues in a disciplined fashion.
The multi- talented, All Student Rock Band, led by Head of Performing Arts at the school – Jenni Oatway, were outstanding with their musical precisions and symphonic rock which resonated within their complex compositions.
A magnificent show and a wonderful evening was had by all! Thank you again Saltash Community School – You all Rocked!
Emily Venner added, ‘It was a real privilege leading the cast. It’s always hard work putting on a show but fantastic to see the end product and the students’ hard work come to fruition. I’d like to thank everyone that helped make the show a success, from front of house, the PTA, the musicians, the staff and the wider community’.
