Flying Start Becomes First Plastic-Free Nursery in Saltash

SALTASH, January, 20 2020 - Flying Start nursery in Saltash has become the first nursery in Saltash to be awarded the Plastic Free School award by Plastic Free Saltash as part of the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Communities initiative. The programme has been developed to tackle unnecessary single-use plastics in communities, schools and nurseries across the UK.

Flying Start Saltash is run by manager Amy Mayer. Amy said “The children really enjoyed taking part in the process with the trash mob walks being a big hit, they are now much more aware of the litter around in our community with parents telling me how their children point out the rubbish when they are on local walks and doing mini litter picks with family.

In order for a school or nursery to be awarded Plastic Free School status, they must complete five objectives. These objectives work alongside the EYFS framework helping children’s personal, social and emotional development, understanding of the world around them and expressing themselves through art and design with a positive environmental message at its core.

The objectives include…

• Creating a Plastic Free Nurseries Action Club

• Organising litter picks

• Learning about single-use plastics

• Creating plastic-free campaign artwork

“As a nursery, we found the process really easy, we made some really simple changes in the setting, we no longer use nappy sacks when changing the nappies but put them straight into the large nappy waste bin. We no longer purchase small plastic soap pumps instead we have large 5-litre containers and refill our new wall soap dispensers. We had the best time making our new nursery Christmas tree from the boxes our fruit and veg comes in weekly- all from another plastic-free company veg box fresh,” said Amy.

The award was presented by Saltash’s Plastic Free Community Leader, Georgina Caro and Councillor Julia Peggs.

Georgina said: “It’s fantastic to have our first Plastic Free Nursery in Saltash and we can’t wait to get others on board too”.
