...to this month’s bumper bi-monthly edition! At this time of year Jenny and I, and all of you other working families out there, are generally pulled in about a hundred directions at the same time. We have school shows to go to, work to cram in to a shortened month, just to get a few days off, and family visits to arrange and shop for! However, despite all this madness, our house still gets excited about Christmas. Whether it’s the expectations, the nostalgia or just the specialness of the season - it’s so important for us to make time in the busyness to pause and thing about what is really important in life. This is the reason why we looked at our print schedules and made the difficult decision to combine December and January into one magazine. We hope you can hang onto it that little bit longer until our February edition comes winging its way into letterboxes, heralding the end of dark evenings. Our Out and About section is packed full of interesting activities that run right up until the
end of January. And you can certainly make the most of the excitement and vibrancy of the Saltash Christmas Festival, bringing Fore Street alive on 2 December, as well as the Christmas Tree Festival, Pantomime, and the spectacular fireworks on 10 December. Saltash comes alive when it comes together to celebrate. So we urge you to take a little time yourselves and get out and meet your neighbours. Bring the family to prove that fun and wonder are not only to be found in theme parks across the ocean but can also be found just up the road. And when we all take a little time, we can remember the bitter-sweet, the lost loved ones and the full range of emotions that come to the surface at this time of year too. Sharing these makes us all a little kinder and more sensitive to each other - and that’s a great gift to give at any time of year.

IN BRIEF
FOOTBALL Making the WITH HEART Community Safer Saltmill Football pitch is the place to be at 11am on Christmas Eve this year as teams packed full of “Saltash Legends” lock horns again. The current champions, the Under 28’s will be managed by Callington Town Goalkeeper Sam Borthwick and Saltash United 3rds stalwart, Adam Stiff. The opposition, the Overs will be managed once more by highly experienced Will Swales and assisted by former St Stephens Borough hot shot, Stuart Fort. A suggested donation of £1 or an item of sports kit will be enough to gain you entry to this year’s special event which has a very poignant addition. Earlier this year Alfie Hopes and his mum Laura were tragically killed in an accident near Landrake. Alfie was a player for Saltash United Juniors Under 6 side, coached by his Dad, Lee Hopes, and Sam Borthwick amongst others. The “Alfie and Laura Hopes Memorial” game will be held at half time when Saltash United Juniors under 6’s and 7’s will take to the field to showcase their talent. A raffle and refreshments will raise funds which will be split between Kits4Causes and a charity selected by Lee Hopes and his son Tommy. This year’s whole event is sponsored by B&G Haulage. The main game is sponsored by Saltash Tyre Recycling Ltd. The Memorial game is sponsored by S W Flooring. The Man of the Match Trophy, which will be named the “Alfie Hopes Trophy” is sponsored by Gareth’s Barbers Saltash. If you would like to donate a raffle prize or offer any help on the day, please get in touch with any of the management teams or Charity Ambassador Julian Chenery.
Burraton Community Association has followed the example of other organisations in Saltash by providing lifesaving equipment at its community centre. The management committee felt that as the centre was used by so many community members of all ages and possible vulnerabilities, it would provide an additional service by installing a potentially lifesaving defibrillator. David Phillips of Cardiac Science was invited to the centre to demonstrate how to use the defibrillator and gave other valuable advice on how to save lives in association with using the equipment. There is now a defibrillator in the front entrance to the centre which the management committee feel will be of great importance if needed by the users of the centre and beyond.

IN BRIEF
A day with the royal Navy for local students Battling through a darkened ship to find an item of stores was among the challenges faced by local school children during their visit to HMS Raleigh. Around 150 students from schools in Plymouth and Saltash attended the open day hosted by the Defence Maritime Logistics School (DMLS) at the Royal Navy training base in Torpoint. At the supply chain squadron the students became members of HMS Dreadnought’s Ship’s Company, tasked with searching their way through the storerooms to find a vital piece of equipment as the ship suffered damage and the lights went out. In the writer squadron the visitors had to prepare a ship for its arrival in a foreign port, matching the currency with different countries around the world. This reflected the writers’ job as the ship’s HR and administrative specialists, dealing with cash, pay and other tasks. Over at the catering school the students learnt how to prepare nutritious and wholesome food with limited resources, as well as icing cakes that
were later served to them as part of their lunch, and saw a demonstration of flambé cooking. Leon Peacock, aged 12, said: “In cooking I’ve been thinking why do the Navy need chefs and why don’t they just pack up food when they go away, but I now realise that’s not the case because it will take up too much room. If they packed a case it probably wouldn’t fit down a submarine. The day has been really fun and I’ve learnt a lot.” The groups were also shown the secondary roles carried out by members of the Logistics branch, including fire-fighting and first aid. Summing up her day, 11-year-old Shaenae Bennett said: “I’ve learnt how to march. I’ve learnt how to decorate a cake. I’ve learnt how to salute and I’ve learnt how you have to train. I’m really interested in what goes on in the Navy.” Everyone attending had shown an interest in the Royal Navy or had family members serving or previously serving. The children taking part were aged between 11 and 15 years.

Jasmyn- REMINDER Bernice for dog BraveS owners the Shave
Jasmyn Bernice Lowe is donating ALL of her hair and raising money for CLIC Sargent who were such a wonderful support to her best friend Charlotte, diagnosed a week after their fifteenth birthdays, with Pre B Lymphoblastic Lymphoma - a type of cancer treated like leukaemia. Jasmyn is having her head shaved in January, donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust who make extraordinary wigs for young women. She is raising money through the Justgiving website, www.justgiving.com/fundraising /jasmynbernice, asking friends, family, and neighbours to give what they can. Jasmyn has good reason to brave the shave. “Charlotte has inspired me so much and continues to inspire me every day, she is an amazing person. So even though this is only something little, I hope I can show how much I care through this as well as helping others who are just as cool as Charlotte.”
Cornwall Council has introduced a Dogs on Leads by Direction Order which means that should your dog be causing a nuisance in an area that the public are entitled to be in, an authorised officer can direct you to put the dog on a lead and keep it on a lead for a specified period of time or until you leave that area. Failure to comply with this is an offence and as such is liable to either a fixed penalty for £100 or a prosecution where you would face a maximum of £1000 fine. There is also an exhaustive list of play areas in Saltash where dogs are excluded, which can be found at cornwall.gov.uk under Dog Exclusion Order 2017. The law also states that dog fouls in any area to which the public are entitled access must be cleaned up. Failure to remove faeces will result in a fixed penalty of £100.00 or the possibility of prosecution and a fine of up to £1000.00 if the penalty is not paid.

putting sparkle into
saltash shopping Despite feeling a little overwhelmed by commercial pressures sometimes, the Festive Season has always maintained its touch of glamour, sparkle and shine. You can be five or 95, but the pull of a sequin is universal. Whether we dress for ourselves, or for others to show we have made an effort for our family and friends, there is no better excuse to help us out the door on dark evenings, than a little bit of glitz and glamour. Saltash offers it all when it comes to advice and professionalism to help you and yours bedazzle – fashion, hair and beauty, and reasonably priced accessories on our doorstep! We can tick everything off that Christmas list without having to step out of the town centre. There is so much to be grateful for, living in an area where we can meet and greet those we know whilst attending to seasonal tasks. We may never completely lose the pressure and stress that can come from our consumer society
at this time of year, but putting our best foot forward and having a chat and a laugh with our friends bemoaning all the extra work certainly puts a lot more joy into the experience.

POP UP TO THE
POP UP THIS
CHRISTMAS The Saltash Pop Up Shop is bursting with ideas for thoughtful, quirky gifts and decorations to drive home the Shop Local message this Christmas. Coordinated by Jo Baskott, the Pop Up Shop was originally the brainchild of the intrepid CEPL12, bringing an empty shop into use by negotiating a short lease and reasonable rent. Jo now deals directly with the landlord, a local man, who is happy continuing to support the initiative that brings such vibrancy and freshness to Saltash’s shopping experience. The idea is based on a loose cooperative of individuals who buy the space they need to display their work, and all these smaller amounts are combined to pay the monthly rental, making it much easier for start-up businesses to gain confidence and experience selling to the public, and quite a bit warmer and drier than open air markets! Everyone takes a turn in manning the shop once a month and sales are carefully allocated. For the discerning customer, it is a chance to browse in comfort and choose from a beautiful array of quality handmade gifts, directly from the makers, without having to pay an expensive mark up. And money spent goes directly back into the community via a wealth of talented people who all live locally. Saltash Pop Up has extended its opening hours to include Sundays and late-night Thursdays during the festive season.

TOASTING SUCCESS
Prestige and a little bit of tongue in cheek formality always add an extra bit of flair to events. Saltash is home to many former service personnel who will remember well the fun of traditional, formal occasions, and the feeling of getting married in uniform. Previously a Second Officer Women’s Royal Naval Service, Janet Moyse, has embarked on a new career that brings all these qualities into one. She has recently undergone training by a former Toastmaster of the year, Peter York, to be able to pass the stringent requirements to join the Executive Guild of Toastmasters and Town Criers. “Having some time on my hands, a loud parade ground trained voice, years of experience in supervising sea cadets, and a hearty understanding of naval humour, I felt I had many skills to bring to the job” explained Janet. “I am once again one of a handful of women in a traditionally male role, so finding a uniform to flatter and fit was something I had plenty of experience of!” Janet, who lives in Greenwich Place, a sheltered housing scheme run by The Church of England Soldiers’, Sailors’ & Airmen’s Housing Association, has entered her new profession with a relaxed attitude, content to cover her costs, so enabling
her to attend charity events without a fee. We are certain her organisational skills, ability to remain sober, and sense of humour will contribute immensely to any private or corporate events wanting to run smoothly and be remembered for all the right reasons.

ELLIOTT’S STORE SUCCESS Huge congratulations are in order for the team of volunteers involved in the preservation and ongoing use of Elliott’s Store in Lower Fore Street. Led by Gerry Sweet, they have worked tirelessly for the last three years with the support of the museum development officer for Cornwall to achieve accredited museum status. They needed to submit a very detailed report, agree many policies and procedures, and be scrutinised by representatives of the Arts Council. Passing with flying colours, Elliott’s Store museum is now able to access further training and funding streams to ensure the team of volunteers from the Tamar Protection Society (TPS) can continue enchanting visitors with the “Time Capsule” of pre-decimalisation, as well as new exhibitions upstairs, and they have plenty of plans to celebrate our unique social history.
Volunteers photographed, Benita Pedley and Mike Couch are both very enthusiastic about their roles, behind the scenes and interacting with the public, and would encourage anyone with some spare time to get in touch as there are lots of ways to get involved. The Museum is open for refreshments during the Christmas Lights Switch On, December 2, and the chair of Tamar Protection Society, Brigette Dixon is happy to chat through volunteering opportunities over the phone, 01579 384381. Elliott’s Store, and Mary Newman’s Cottage, also run by the TPS will reopen their doors from April 14 to the end of September 2018. YOUTH NEWS
HIGH FLYING RESULTS FOR YOUNG STAGERS Youngstagers and Stagerite, the Youth Theatre group in Saltash has won three accolades at this year’s Cornwall Drama Association Awards. Youngstagers were placed second for the Best Musical award for this year’s production of Peter Pan the Musical up against some stiff adult competition, and received a Special Award for the flying effect which had the young Darling children flying over the rooftops of London to Neverland. Ryan Bailey who played Peter Pan was also awarded the Roy Crosley Award for outstanding performance by an under 18 year old. Marilyn Grose, Chair of the group said, “It’s always an honour to have our work recognised by the Cornwall Drama Association and be nominated for any awards, but to walk away with three accolades is amazing! It’s testament to the cast and production crew and all their effort and hard work that we achieved such a high standard of performance. This production of Peter Pan stretched our creative resources, and for the flying effects to be acknowledged with a separate award is just perfect. It shows the impact such dedication and hard work can have.”
President of Youngstagers/Stagerite Sue Hooper MBE said, “As a lifetime supporter of Youngstagers, I continue to be amazed at the standard of performance that this outstanding performing arts group has achieved. To receive such acclaimed recognition from the CDA underpins the youngsters’ own efforts, but also the production and stagecraft team who work tirelessly to keep the shows coming year on year, and who keep the youngsters interest in theatre. I applaud and congratulate them for this recognition of team work within the Youngstagers theatre family.” The Youth Theatre Group, which is in its 26th year, is not resting on its laurels. Rehearsals are in full swing for their Christmas Festival performance, with new members joining the fun. Marilyn Grose added, “We’re working hard on our preparations for the Christmas performance on Fore Street on Saturday 2 December. We’re hoping there will be something for everyone, with added festive fun before the Christmas lights are switched on at 5pm. We look forward to performing for Saltash residents and supporting the Chamber of Commerce in this year’s event.”

Ella raises £590 by having the chop!
Before
Saltash seems to have a huge amount of entrepreneurial young people who are keen to show their support for all manner of causes. Ella May who is 10 years old is one such person with a desire to raise money for the CLIC Sargent Houses in Bristol after discovering that her friend Alfie was diagnosed with cancer at just two and a half years old. CLIC Sargent was formed in 2005 after a successful merger between CLIC and Sargent Cancer Care for Children. Sargent Cancer Care for Children was founded in 1968 by Sylvia Darley as a lasting memory to the late Sir Malcolm Sargent, and CLIC, Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood, was founded in 1976 in the south west by Bob Woodward following the diagnosis of his young son Robert with cancer two years before. Ella had thirteen inches chopped of her hair by Becky Smith at Bombshell Saltash in Fore Street. The hair has been donated to the Princess Trust to be made into a wig for a child who has lost their hair due to illness. Joanne May, proud mum of daughter Ella said,

“Ella had been growing her hair for years and loves it, and this is something she has thought hard about to help others. I am very proud of her!” Becky Smith, senior stylist at the popular salon on Fore Street said, “Ella was super brave waiting patiently while I plaited her hair before chopping the plaits off. For those of us in the trade, we know what a big deal that is! I was able to give the hair to Joanne in pristine condition to be sent off to the Princess Trust, which felt great.” In total Ella raised an amazing £590. Jordan Anderton, Fundraising Engagement Manager for CLIC Sargent in Cornwall, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Ella for such a brave and generous act, she is a real ‘life-shaver’ in our eyes. “We rely entirely on donations to fund our vital work, so thanks to Ella and everyone who donated, we will be able to help even more young people thrive not just survive after their cancer diagnosis.” For more information about CLIC Sargent’s work and how to get involved in fundraising yourself go to: www.clicsargent.org.uk

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO FIGHT FIRES? Saltash Community Fire, Rescue and Safety Station are recruiting on-call firefighters. Oncall firefighters are people who live or work very close to their community fire station and are on stand-by, ready to respond to emergency situations. They also help the service carry out essential prevention and education work. The station is looking for the right person for the job, irrespective of who they may be, but they are actively promoting the role through Positive Action to women, people who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or from across the wider spectrum of sexual and/ or gender self-identities, as well as people from a black or minority ethnic group. You may be asking, why does the Fire service need Positive Action? The fire service want to be representative of the communities they serve, only then can they truly appreciate and identify local
needs in local neighbourhoods. A workforce that reflects the diversity of its local communities inspires confidence and makes it easier to access those at most risk and to deliver the health, safety and wellbeing messages in a way that is easily understood. Having difference in a team is so important to create new ways of thinking and having different points of view. It keeps an organisation alive with ideas and innovation. The service wants to create a safe place where everyone feels they can come to work and be themselves and our inclusive culture is ready to welcome anyone who wants to join the Fire, Rescue and Community Safety Service team. If you are interested in joining or would like more information, or if you require a recruitment pack or application form, please contact 01872 323800 or email firecareers@cornwall.gov.uk

Walk and Talk in Good Company - starting Spring 2018 At a Dementia consultation event held earlier this year, several participants expressed an interest in walking as a group. As a result, three members of the Dementia Voice PL12 team will be undertaking Walk Leadership training with ‘Walking for Health, Southwest’ and hope to offer a programme of short walks twice a month beginning in the Spring of 2018. The walks of between 30 and 90 minutes will generally start in Saltash and finish at a venue where we can enjoy a coffee/tea together. At times, we would like to venture further afield but, in order to achieve this, it would mean hiring the Hopper Bus which would incur a small charge to each participant. We are keen to have more volunteers join us, to help with both the planning of routes and to assist on the walks. If any business or individual would be willing to either sponsor us or make a donation to running costs, we would greatly appreciate it. Contact us by email, info@dementiapl12.uk. The group is seen here on a recent trip see the Poppy Wave at the Royal Naval Memorial on Plymouth Hoe. With the convenience of hiring the Hopper Bus, the group visited on a Friday evening so that they could be there for the Last Post ceremony which was very moving.

saltash.net School Report
STUDENT
REPORTERS
By Isobel Whittam
Be Well Be Well is a new subject that has been introduced at saltash.net. Years 7 and 8 receive one hour of Be Well once a fortnight and all students receive sessions during tutor time. But what is Be Well? This new subject encourages students to look after their mental and physical health. It also builds resilience, which will support them for the rest of their lives. Recently the country has focused on young people and their mental and physical wellbeing. Schools can support this through education and making sure students understand the importance of good wellbeing. To get all of the school (years 7-11) involved in this new subject, saltash.net had a Be Well themed day, on Wednesday 18th October. This gave students the opportunity to choose five different activities to explore during the day. Students could choose to experience creative
sessions, such as sugar craft, colouring and music which could help them to relax and find something they enjoy. Various sports sessions were also on offer for students who wanted were keen to try something active. Tramlining, boxing and martial arts were just some activities available. There were also sessions giving advice on how to live an enjoyable life such as how to get a better night’s sleep and support for dealing with anxiety or anger, in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. To give the best outcome for the day, saltash.net also invited some visitors to offer advice and experience. The Army joined saltash.net to help students develop teambuilding skills and St John’s Ambulance and an ex-student provided sessions on how to build resilience. Overall students at Saltash.net are excited by the new subject of Be Well and hope to see more of the subject in the future. The school would like to say thank you to Mrs Feldwick for organising the amazing day and for putting in so much effort to make the day such a success.

YOUTH VOICE
NEW YOUTH PANEL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE of saltash By Rose Bonner, Secretary of Saltash Town Youth Council and graduate of saltash.net community school.
There has been a revelation for the youth of Saltash. Over the past few months, pure dedication has been demonstrated to create a new ‘Youth Panel’ to be set up to go alongside the Saltash Town Youth Council. This month, it has finally materialised and the young people formulating new ideas to
of Saltash are already benefit the town. The Youth Panel was initiated by Camille Smith (co-chair of the Saltash Town Youth Council). The innovative concept was ongoing for a while as the council had all agreed it would be a marvellous platform to voice the concerns and desires of the youth of our town.
YOUTH cOUNCIL CELEBRATES
25 YEARS
On 17th October, the Saltash Town Youth Panel was launched at Livewire where the first meeting was held. After having played games such as ‘Human Bingo’ to get to know each other, serious topics such as safety, mental health and LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and queer) were discussed and it was clearly evident that the youth took these issues with great empathy and concern. Camille states: “The Youth panel met for the first time in October. 11 young people from organisations across Saltash came together to form a new group. This group will seek to provide children and young people aged 10 and up to have a say on their experiences of Saltash and what they would like to support to change locally. The group is a by-product of the hugely successful Saltash Town Youth Council. This group will meet on a monthly basis and will over the next couple of sessions form officially with the young people taking on lead roles and planning the way the group will move forward.” For more information please get in touch. Camille. smith@ypc.org.uk 07422505646
To celebrate 25 years since the formation of the Saltash Town Youth Council, a number of awards will be presented at a ceremony on December 1. The categories are Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Outstanding Young Adult, Award for Outstanding Achievement, Award for Outstanding Peer Support, Inspirational Young Person Award, Young Volunteer Award, Community Impact Award, Young Creative Person of the Year, Young Performing Artist of the Year, and Young Sports Person of the Year. The Sue Hooper Perpetual Award will also be given to the young person who stands out in more than one category. We are looking forward to celebrating the success of the amazing youth projects and young people of Saltash in our next edition.

SUCCESS FOR SALTASH.NET STUDENT SAM!
A saltash.net student has enjoyed success in a prestigious Cornish architectural competition for students. Year 13 student Sam Sowden won second prize in the Royal Institution of British Architects (RIBA) Cornwall Work Experience Competition 2017. All students undertaking an architectural work experience placement in Cornwall this year were eligible to participate in the competition, which required the student to produce a design for a structure to a particular brief. Sam chose to design a temporary outdoor performance area that could be suitable for Saltash, producing sketches based on a traditional Victorian bandstand with a nautical theme to represent the town’s strong maritime links. The competition was judged by two qualified
Architects, assisted by eight undergraduate Architecture students from the University of Plymouth. In their comments they said that, ‘All were very impressed with the overall standard and quality of submissions, showing innovation, good interpretation of the brief and a good standard of overall presentation.’ The judges added that Sam’s submission, ‘was of a higher standard’, putting him in second place. Adam Killeya, Head of Sixth Form at saltash. net, said, “We think work experience is a very important part of students’ education, and helps to prepare them for their future studies and careers. We’re always proud of the feedback that our students receive and this prize shows that Sam really went the extra mile to get the most out of his placement.”

SOLID ONLINE ADVICE Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) sounds like one of those terms that you feel you should know something about in our modern digital world, but are a little scared to admit that you don’t! David Groom, who has recently moved his business from his home in Saltash to a new office space, knows so much about this area of growing your business online that he’s increased the online exposure and sales for many businesses. After studying a BSc (Hons) in Multimedia Computing at Plymouth University he has spent nearly 10 years working with digital media agencies around the UK and in London to ensure David many very well-known and upcoming Groom brands stay that way by constantly improving their visibility online.
His passion, however, is to use these skills for small local businesses to uncover their target markets through searches, mobile searches, voice searches and reviews, which facilitate clear and frequent signposts to their business online. David is also able to analyse the wealth of data that Google provides to help businesses develop easy routes to and through their websites, driving traffic and improving sales. It’s such a shame when a great business fails purely because of lack of exposure. So, whether that is online, offline or a healthy combination of both, make sure your messages, products and services are seen, heard and understood and that potential customers have an easy job of finding you.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are legal documents enabling your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs and make decisions, if you are not able to do so. Should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident or lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a Lasting Power of Attorney would be invaluable. You are not legally obligated to have a LPA in place, similarly there is no obligation to have a will or a life insurance policy, but if you don’t, things could be very difficult and expensive for your family and loved ones.

GIRL GUIDE NEWS Queen’s Guides Logo
Rangers Logo
THESE GIRLS CAN! Saltash has a great selection of uniformed young peoples’ groups running in the town. Saltash Senior Guides re-started in 2015, changing their name to Rangers. Rangers are older guides aged 14-18 and are part of Girlguiding UK. They were called the Senior Section for several years but their name has just changed back to Rangers due to popular demand and to emphasise the amount of adventuring they do! Several local Rangers recently fundraised to visit Adelboden, Switzerland on a trip organised by Cornwall Guiding, to celebrate a hundred years of Ranger Guiding. Money was raised in all sorts of ways – grant applications, stalls at the Christmas and May Fayre, quizzes, cooking and organising meals as well as the inevitable bag packing. The ten-day trip was fantastic. In addition to doing the Guiding linked activities such as visiting Our Lady’s Chalet, they also went white water rafting, up the Famous Jungfrau Mountain, ate lots of cheese and chocolate and made loads of new friends. The Rangers meet on the
third Monday of the month at Saltash Guiding HQ between 7.30pm and 9pm. In addition they attend all sorts of fun and exciting events such as surfing or “escape rooms”. They also do voluntary work and raise money for various charities and the local community. Future events include a theatre trip to London and Pax Lodge, a Cornish Coast to Coast walking event organised by the scouts, and a Queen’s Guide evening. The Queen’s Guide award is a prestigious award, similar to the Gold Duke of Edinburgh or Queen’s Scout. Saltash is hosting a Queens Guide evening on Monday 19 March from 7.30pm until 9pm to share past experiences and discuss what is now needed to get a Queens Guide award. Please contact Corinne Ashcroft is you would be interested in attending, either as a girl aged between 14-18 wanting to get involved, or as someone who can share their experiences of being a Queen’s Guide in the past. Corinne can be contacted. on 07803 422456.

Plymouth Citybus and Cornwall Go Bus launch contactless payment
Richard Stevens, MD of Citybus
Contactless payments are now available on all Plymouth Citybus services including those operating in East Cornwall under the Cornwall Go Bus banner. Buses are accepting contactless payment methods including bPay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, Visa and MasterCard. Customers can simply ask the driver for a ticket or multiple tickets and instead of paying with cash, use a method of contactless payment. Multiple tickets can be purchased in one contactless transaction as long as the total amounts to £30 or less. This means that tickets including day-rider, week and group-rider for example can all be purchased on board using contactless. Plymouth Citybus is the only operator in Plymouth and the first in Devon to offer contactless as an on bus payment method. The payment method has
been introduced after an extensive trial period on new ticket machines, which were installed across the Citybus fleet in October. Richard Stevens, Managing Director, Plymouth Citybus, said: “This is a big step forward for us in removing the barriers to bus travel. “We find that a common reason people choose not to use the bus is that they don’t carry cash or are afraid they do not have the correct change. From now on passengers won’t need to carry cash to board our buses. Contactless also makes boarding faster, so we hope to see a direct improvement in boarding times.” Contactless card payment is just one of the recent improvements to the service offered by Plymouth Citybus who in October 2017 was named ‘Medium Bus Operator of the Year’ at the routeone Awards and was highly commended as ‘Bus Operator of the Year’ at the National Transport Awards.

MUSIC SCENE we began at school together, and we played together a few times here and there back then. We ended not seeing each other for quite a while, as when we got older, we both had different priorities and different friendship groups. One night, Cormack messaged me about forming our own band, which is now Fight of the Valkyries. We have had a few extra band members in the past that have come and gone, but we find the two of us works really well and we bounce off each other easily. LS: What bands do you find influence your musical journey? KT: We have a few influences such as the Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T and Catfish and the Battlement, and one day we’d love to be able to play at the levels they are. LS: You’ve just released your EP Laughing Matters on Spotify and Apple music etc, how did you find the recording process? KT: We actually found the recording process very stressful! We both have quite difficult full time jobs with long working hours, so trying to fit in the recording was quite hard. Trying to find the money was reasonably hard as well! different ideas as to how they should sound. The mixes definitely ended up being sent to and fro many times to get the perfect sound that we wanted, but in the end we’re really happy with how the album sounds. LS: Are you pleased with the response to the EP so far? KT: Very happy! We’ve had over a thousand plays of the album in under a month and quite a lot of downloads too! We played a set at Elements Festival recently and even had a few fans come up to us. They asked if we were Fight of the Valkyries and then proceeded to start singing ‘Rudi’ to us, which was the first song that we ‘bedroom recorded’ so that was nice! LS: What have you guys got lined up for the future? KT: We’re going to start writing an album, but this time spend a lot more time on it. ART @
ASHTORRE IN 2018 A recent survey of visitors to Ashtorre Rock showed that, along with the friendly welcome and the stunning riverside views, the art exhibitions were one of the most popular attractions of a visit to the community centre, down at the Waterside. Ashtorre Rock has been showcasing the work of Saltash artists since 2010 and, by the end of 2018 there will have been 70 exhibitions. Nearly 40 artists who work in PL12 or have connections with Saltash and five groups associated with Ashtorre have shown their work, reflecting the level of art activity going on in and around the town. They include amateurs who come together to share their enthusiasm and experienced professionals who sell their work widely across the region and beyond. The programme for 2018 is now in place and we look forward to the impressive portraits of Jo Beer, imposing abstract landscapes by Hilary Hughes, the often surprising insights of Rosalie Wyatt, the careful oils of Ken Dean, imaginative and experimental work from Ashtorre Artists and displays by three Ashtorre groups: Tamar Art Group, Ashtorre Watercolour Group and Riverside Quilters. Meanwhile, Ashtorre is open for drinks and snacks and a Christmassy welcome, daily from 10am to 4pm. Tamar Art Group will kick off the 2018 programme with their latest watercolours from January 6.
