SHOP LOCAL
Once again, we have been beavering away putting together this issue of Love Saltash. The time has come around so quickly, and we are rushing to meet our print deadline to get this July issue out to you! One of the comments Jenny had consistently when she started the magazine was, “I never knew there was so much to do in Saltash”. This has certainly proven true, as we discover just how much local activity there is. The pages of this edition are full to bursting with stories of what is happening on our doorstep.
This is being written very early in the morning just before the famous Saltash Regatta weekend, which has consumed the early mornings and late nights of the last few months of its volunteer organisers. Hats off to them for all that they do to bring visitors into the town, and celebrate the great waterside community that Saltash is. One of Jenny’s main drivers to begin Love Saltash was to produce a magazine that was truly representative of the community it serves. This is the reason that we work so hard filling these pages with content that we know will be of interest to our readers. Please do get in touch with us to tell us what is important to you. As you are probably aware we are funded purely by the hard-earned pennies of those amazing local businesses who choose to advertise with us. Love Saltash is published by Cornerstone Vision in association with Backbone Media Editorial: Karen Pilkington & Jenny Lightley Design: Naomi Girdler Front Cover Illustration: Watercolour of Lower Fore Street and Royal Albert Bridge by Saltash artist Simon Young. To see more of his work, go to www.simonyoungart.com
The revenue this brings keeps us going, but we also need your support. With no means to pay for a full, or even part time reporter, we rely on genuine community journalism. And that means actively looking for contributions from local people. We believe that you are best placed to tell the stories that really matter. When tumultuous events are happening across the world and in our nation right now, it’s important to be mindful of the quality of day to day living we enjoy - not to hide out heads in the sand, but to value the preciousness, diversity and delight of what we have and sometimes take for granted. This magazine is paid for solely by the contributions of local businesses and organisations, all of whom are having to dig deep in these taxing times. Please do send them your support by getting involved, using their services and considering them each time you need to make a purchase. And please mention us when you do, so we can all support each other!

Mayor TA L Ks ay s AGE CONCERN
Saltash Age concern members were given a special treat when Sue Hooper former Mayor and a Saltash Freeman of the town visited and gave the members a talk on the Tudor period and Queen Elizabeth 1 of England (born September 7 1533). Sue said that Queen Elizabeth 1 is considered by many to be the greatest monarch in English History. Daughter of Henry V111 and Anne Boleyn Elizabeth inherited a bankrupt nation, torn between religious discord. Queen Elizabeth 1 was only the third queen to rule England in her own right; the other two examples were Lady Jane Grey and half sister Mary 1 and their reigns proved to be disastrous. Queen Elizabeth 1 reigned for 45 years. During her reign Elizabeth survived plots against her and Court gossip of her supposedly numerous love affairs. Elizabeth held the country together in relative peace for 45 years and united Scotland and England. She settled the religious discord of the previous decades; and gave the generations that followed her example of courage, education and intelligence. Indeed Elizabeth proved, that after all her father Henry V111 strived and killed his Queens for, she did not have to be a son to rule her beloved Country. Queen Elizabeth 1 died in 1603
thanks Councillor Mrs Jean Dent the new Mayor of Saltash and Mr David Yates the new Deputy Mayor would like to give their sincere thanks to the members of the former Council.
There are a number of councillors who did not stand for election in May and the new Council are very aware of how much we owe to their tireless work over many years to have left Saltash the dynamic place that it is today. Who can forget the innovative schemes and committees that they have left us. The Cross, Ellwell Woods, Ann Glanville on her bench, STIG, The Christmas Festival with The Lantern Parade, Kalan Gwav and many many more. So, ladies and gentlemen of the former Council thank you so much and we will do our very best to carry on your good work.

VETERANS COMMEMORATE D-DAY Dementia Voice Veterans Group meet every fortnight on a Saturday from 4.30pm - 6.30pm at No 4 Fore Street Saltash where a complimentary afternoon tea is served. On Saturday June 3 the group commemorated D-Day and in attendance were veterans as well as serving members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Saltash’s new Mayor Jean Dent and her consort Bill Dent, who is also the President of the Saltash Branch of the Royal British Legion, were also present at the event. To start proceedings Bill Dent recited the Exhortation followed by The Last Post, a minute’s silence and reveille, after which the Chairman of the Saltash Royal Naval Association,
Roy Nobel proposed the toast to Splice The Mainbrace with Rum which was kindly donated by Amy Newland, landlady of The Bullers Arms at Landrake. Carol Emmett, Mayor Jean Dent and her consort Bill Dent
One of the veterans, ex-Royal Marine Ken Emmett, whose father was a D-Day veteran, brought along several items of WW2 memorabilia, which was of great interest to the veterans.
Facilitator Carol Emmett said: “As a group we feel it is so important to uphold and commemorate these military dates and occasions. As with many of our veterans in our group these honourable men and women have stood in harms way during wars and conflicts and should be honoured and revered accordingly.”

TOWN MESSENGER
Saltash Station
On 31st May 2017 the Town Council took ownership of the station building and land following prolonged but ultimately successful negotiations by the Station Working Party. At one point the Town Council had considered using a Compulsory Purchase order to obtain the site which was causing so much concern after falling into disrepair. However, this was not necessary and with the assistance of a grant from GWR (Great Western Railway) the purchase was completed. The purchase is only the first part of the story. To return the station building to its former glory will require additional funding and considerable work. The hope is to provide not only facilities for visitors to the town and users of the rail service but also space for community use. The finished project must be economically viable.
The Town Council will apply for s106 funding towards the next stage of development and the Working Party is identifying other opportunities for funding. Business case options will have to be prepared with consultation on uses – suggested ideas are for a cafÊ, waiting room and toilet facilities; possible exhibition space and office facilities on the first floor. An architect will be engaged to draw up plans and provide concept drawings. Whilst it will take time to complete the project, the town can be confident that the station will once again be a source of pride welcoming visitors to the Gateway to Cornwall.

STARS SHINE AT COLLEGE AWARDS Students from The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) have been recognised for their outstanding achievements at this year’s Student STAR Awards. The Student of the Year award went to Business Administration apprentice Ben Mailes. Ben has suffered with cerebral palsy since birth which has left him with no speech. Despite being unable to speak, Ben is currently an apprentice with Cornwall Council and is excelling in his studies.
Ben was delighted to win the award: “I was surprised but very pleased. I was offered a place at university, but decided that being an apprentice was better for me. It is good be able to study and get qualifications whilst working and getting paid. "Cornwall Council have been great employers, I have several roles including data analysis, general administration and finance. I’m working with 2 brilliant teams - they have supported me and looked past my disabilities. They have also
student NEWS allowed me to volunteer with the Council and NHS, helping children with speech difficulties.” This year the categories for the awards were based on the Group’s values: Can do, Caring, Celebrating, Consistent, Connected, Courageous and Creative. Each category saw three candidates shortlisted from hundreds of nominations, with the winners each receiving a trophy and a cheque, and the runnersup receiving a certificate of commendation. The Students’ Student award, sponsored by Domino’s Pizza, was won by Corey McNeil from Plymouth. Corey, who is studying an Advanced Technical Diploma in Professional Cookery at Cornwall College in Saltash, was delighted to receive the award: “It feels amazing to win an award and it was a real surprise. I must thank my amazing lecturer Chris Penk as without his guidance I wouldn’t be where I am today. His dedication inspires and motivates me to achieve my best.” One of the award nominations for Corey said: “Corey is a real people person; he’s approachable, friendly and lively at all times. Corey has been at this college over 3 years and he has made some amazing changes, including being involved in the refurbishment of the new Café area and getting new seating allocated. “Corey is also passionate about charity work and this year he and the campus have raised over £1,300 to date for local charities. He can communicate effectively with his peers and also with management, getting the best results from all. His heart is at Cornwall College Saltash and it really shows, keep up the great work!” Sponsors for the event included Niddocks Ltd. Duchy Health Charity, Cornwall by Kernow and Domino’s Pizza. Principal and Chief Executive for The Cornwall College Group Raoul Humphreys said: “Our annual STAR Awards ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements of our students, recognising the growth of high achievers from across The Cornwall College Group. While every student’s story is unique, they all share some important traits, those of commitment, endeavour and character. You will hear stories of students blossoming through their studies, shrinking violets transforming into confident and engaging members of the community. There are inspirational young people who have overcome incredible adversity to not only succeed, but excel in their work and lives” continued Raoul. “But the roots of their success are found in the support provided by their families, friends and the incredible staff at The Cornwall College Group. Many of our winners have said they would not be here this evening without the unrivalled support and dedication of their tutors.
It feels amazing to win an award and it was a real surprise
“While this is the culmination of a great deal of hard work for our students, it is just the beginning of their adventures into the wider world and we wish them all the success in the world. They are all winners and impeccable ambassadors for The Cornwall College Group.” For more information on the range of courses available across The Cornwall College Group visit www.cornwall.ac.uk or call 0330 123 2523.

The School’s Big Vote Students, parents and staff all get a say in new saltash.net community school uniform The new school uniform vote has taken the entire school by storm. Lots of questions have been asked, some more than others- for example, how much is it going to cost? Do we get a say in the matter? Do we have to wear a tie? Well, all of our students’ questions have been answered. In the school newsletter everything was explained: how much it was going to cost, what items of clothing you were going to need for each option, and most importantly, the fact that it wasn’t just going to be Headteacher Miss Littledyke’s decision - it was going to be taken by us all! All we had to do
was go on to our website and vote for the style of uniform we liked best! We decided to take some quotes about what some pupils thought about the new uniform and what impact they thought it would have on the school. “I think it could make us look smarter in comparison to the uniform we have now,” said one student, and, “I think it’s going to be interesting to see what people will vote for,” said another. We can reveal that the winning vote was decisively in favour of the blazer option- so expect to see some smart new students come September!

General Election Hustings Our Year 13s experienced an invaluable opportunity on 24th May to expand their political understanding before the up and coming General Election. They were lucky enough to be visited by two local candidates for the General Election: the Liberal Democrat candidate, Phil Hutty, and the Labour candidate, Gareth Derick. Due to the devastating events earlier that week in Manchester, the Green Party, withdrew as a mark of respect, while the Conservative candidate, our current MP, Sheryl Murray, declined the offer. This session allowed a variety of issues to be discussed as candidates answered questions from the Sixth Form on subjects such as tuition fees, Brexit, immigration and terrorism. For some undecided voters within Year 13 this

provided them with a clearer understanding of how the different party policies would affect them. A Year 13 who was previously set on who they were going to vote for said, “This debate has changed the way I will vote on polling day”. As this election is of such importance, the school felt it was necessary to provide our new voters with information to make an informed decision for themselves. Lower down the school, saltash.net students have been learning about democracy by taking part in the school’s own mock election. Voting took place the day before the real General Election. At the time of writing, our school opinion polls suggest a close contest between Labour, Libdems and Conservatives is on the cards!

SALTASH.NET UNDER 18s make cup history Saltash.net’s U18 football team have made history by becoming the first Saltash team to ever win the U18 county cup, following their victory against Helston College earlier on this month. The final, which took place at Bodmin, saw saltash. net run out dominant 6-1 winners and claim the trophy for the first time. Goals came from Reece Kyffin (2), Ben Holter, George Soper and Ben Reynolds (2), with each member of the team representing the school fantastically throughout the tournament. Mr. Budd, who coached the team this season, said, ‘The cup win was very well deserved. This is a truly special crop of players and young men. They are so proud to have represented the school for so many years and it’s very fitting that they end their career as county champions. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with them this year.’
The squad has been led brilliantly not only this season, but throughout their entire time at the school, by captain Ryan Winfield, who was agonisingly ruled out of the final due to an ankle injury just four days earlier when he was helping Saltash Youth to victory in the U18s Rathbone cup final. A number of other saltash.net team members were part of that Saltash Youth victory, so it was an incredibly sweet week for them. The match capped off a fantastic competition for the team, who dominated en route to the final, beating Callington 6-0, Launceston 8-0 and Torpoint 7-2. The win builds on an extremely strong year of sporting performances at saltash.net, particularly from our football teams, who have already claimed the U16 girls’ Cornwall cup and the U13 boys’ Cornwall cup.

SALTASH VOTES INDEPENDENT The cut and thrust of the hustings, the buzz of the polling station, the drama of the count and the thrill of the close result ... not the real General Election, but more importantly – the saltash.net mock election! Over the weeks leading up to June 7 seven candidates vied for the votes of the whole school – speaking in assemblies, persuading voters, and plastering their colourful posters around the site.

On the eve of the General Election, a dedicated team of students helped turn the lecture theatre into a very lifelike polling station – voters queued up to register to vote, they received an official stamped ballot paper, entered a voting booth to vote in secret and then posted their ballot paper into the sealed ballot box before departing. At the end of the day, over a thousand students and staff had voted. The final result saw the Independent candidate, Josh Slocombe, win the contest with 312 votes. Awe-some Anjola Anjola Awe, a 14-year-old student from Devonport High School for Girls won a trip to the USA after coming top in a UK competition. Anjola, from Saltash, travelled to Los Angeles with Heather Williams, chief executive of Young Engineers, along with a group of other UK students who have a passion for STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Anjola won the UK Broadcom Masters title in Birmingham with her project on the Science of Language Development. Her success meant she qualified for the Broadcom Masters International event in LA. Alan Thomas, deputy headteacher of Devonport High School for Girls said: “The judges in Birmingham said that Anjola was a genuine
credit to her school and a total delight to spend time with. She blew the judges away with her friendliness, her abilities, her social skills and her amazing project. For the UK competition students were interviewed for 30 minutes while they demonstrated their STEM project, discussed their love of STEM, their views on the importance of STEM and how STEM shapes the world both now and in the future. They had to display an ability to be mature and socialise with other students from all ages and walks of life, work together on two STEM projects with the other candidates and prove they would be an asset in representing the UK at the International Science and Engineering Fair. Alan Thomas added: “It was a stressful time but Anjola handled it magnificently. Congratulations to Anjola – we are very proud of her achievements.”

Shopping local is not just about ensuring that we have somewhere easy to get to when we run out of necessities. It is also about keeping wealth within the community – initiatives like the Bristol Pound have shown that by committing to spend money within a geographical region, we help create vibrant, creative and community minded thinking that benefits us all. And this enlightened thinking benefits, not just our attractive, vibrant high street; but also all those countless local households who we can support by supporting local trades and retailers.
The fantastic community businesses in the following pages are all based locally, and your support means the world to them.
The following pages are dedicated to those individuals who rely on their skills for their livelihoods – whether that is fixing a leaking tap, installing a kitchen, creating a fabulous up do, or sourcing great materials to improve the look of our homes, inside and out. Committing to preferring local services over ones that take our money out of the region, means that our pounds do go further – we pay the local electrician, he buys his meat from the local butcher, who in turn pays a local carpenter to fit his kitchen, who turns up at the Regatta and spends lots of money enjoying the day with his kids (as any parent will know, entertaining children out of the house means losing any profit in the process!) And, we have accountability! NO self respecting local trader is going to risk having rumours of poor quality or bad customer service going around the school gate, especially whilst their partner is standing there waiting to pick up the kids. So, at the risk of sounding like a politician, let’s vote with our hands and feet! Pick up the phone to call a local tradesman, and pop to the local shops to buy your necessities for the week. It might take a bit of an effort, some renewed thinking, and the breaking of a few habits – not the least overcoming our lemming-like leanings to be as busy as possible – but the future of our communities does lie in the buying behaviours of each and everyone of us.

Impressive 2016 results see
major expansion for local
waste management firm
Local waste management company Alpha Logic is enjoying a successful 2017 following impressive growth across all sectors of their business last year. The last 12 months, have seen the Saltashbased company expand their geographical reach into Exeter and Torquay, as well as their service offering, premises and team. Due to increasing demand for their innovative and highly sustainable methods of waste
management the firm needed new and additional premises to their original site in Saltash, leading to a significant investment in their new transport depot in Plympton, Devon. The new transport depot can easily accommodate Alpha Logic’s current fleet of 10 vehicles, which will grow to 12 vehicles in the first quarter of 2017. The space also has enough storage to support Alpha Logic’s newly launched service for

The purchase of this new site reflects how well Alpha Logic’s unique offering has been received in the Southwest and the value that their customers place on Alpha Logic’s dedication to continually push the boundaries of recycling with a mantra of all waste recovered, recycled and managed. The extra space in Plympton houses Alpha Logic’s fleet of ten vehicles which range from a 7.5t top loader to a brand new 26ft trade waste

Mr Stallard, speaking about the company’s growth says: “Last year was hugely successful for the Alpha Logic team and we’re making sure that we continue our positive growth in 2017 too. To have strengthened our work force from 18 to 28 in just over one year is a great achievement and it’s all down to the vision and dedication of the wonderful team we have here. “Last year we focused on increasing our geographical reach to ensure as many businesses and organisations could benefit from our comprehensive range of services as possible,

A QUALITY SERVICE A SENSIBLE PRICE
The Threat posed by long term care fees
It is estimated that there are nearly a million people living in residential care homes in the UK. Whilst the government will pay those costs relating to nursing or medical care, the individual is liable for the costs of residential and personal care, which is means-tested. If a person has to go into care, local authorities can charge residential care fees to that person’s home. A local authority can sell the deceased’s property - if it obtains a court order - in order to meet the charge (or bill). Therefore, to do nothing could be the equivalent of bequeathing all of your home to the local authority rather than to your family. The Property Protection Trust Will has been specially designed to protect part or all of your home against care fees in certain circumstances.

BAKE FOR HEROES
Young people from Devon and Cornwall have risen to the challenge of raising money for Help for Heroes by hosting a Bake for Heroes event.
Student, Chloe Spear, said it was “a great opportunity to help raise money for Help the Heroes”.
Help for Heroes is a British charity that aims to provide better facilities for British servicemen and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty.
“It was a really fun day, I have enjoyed helping to bake and decorate the cakes and it was nice working as part of a team. “
Participants from Help for Heroes Plymouth Recovery Centre were each teamed up with a Professional Cookery student from Cornwall College Saltash, to bake and decorate a cake around the theme ‘Great Britain’ in a ‘bake offstyle’ competition. The cakes were judged by catering lecturers and then donated by the college to the Recovery Centre’s bake sale. Shirley Gray from Help for Heroes, said the day “was really successful.” “All the students have been extremely helpful. The hospitality from the College has been excellent and all the guests have really enjoyed it.”
Team Lead for Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said the event is a “fantastic opportunity to see how well the students work together.” “This has been a great opportunity for our students to develop their planning, preparation and execution of an event as well as their customer service skills. These are skills students would require for Level 3. It was great to see the students undertake the day with such enthusiasm and to help raise money for such a worthwhile cause.” For more information on the range of Hospitality and Professional Cookery courses available across The Cornwall College Group visit www.cornwall. ac.uk or call 0845 22 32 567.

BUSINESS FOCUS
PRESTIgE CELEBRATION Prestige Nursing+Care has had a local office since 1997 and recently celebrated its 20th Birthday Party, opening the doors to members of the local community and raising over £1400 for the Mustard Tree Unit in Derriford. MD of Prestige Nursing+Care, Jonathan Bruce, travelled down from Surrey for the occasion. “Although Prestige has grown to having a presence in over 40 towns and cities across the country,” Jonathan explained, “Our Plymouth branch was one of our very first. We were lucky enough to take on a very young Emma Bonney 17 years ago and have been delighted to retain her services as office manager. She personifies our attitude towards care, one in which we would only wish to appoint carers who we would be happy to look after our own family members. Emma is extremely professional and extremely personable at the same time – qualities that we seek in everyone we recruit.
“Our local office is lovely and light now,” enthused
Emma, who lives in Saltash. “We have rooms to conduct interviews privately with prospective staff and clients; and we have a fully equipped training room with a bed and hoist facilities. Our specialised nurse trainer, Jane Lys, has been with us many years and now is in demand for the whole of the South West region. She ensures that we are fully up to date in current best practice required for caring for those individuals with complex needs. “I love my job and find it so easy to travel to work from Saltash,” commented Emma, “And wholeheartedly believe that the bridge is NOT a barrier to anyone looking for work or a place to live on either side. NATURE NEWS
SEARCH FOR RARE BUTTERFLY Nature lovers in Devon and Cornwall are being asked to create a home for a rare and declining butterfly in the hope of boosting its numbers. The Heath Fritillary butterfly has suffered significant declines in the last forty years, with abundance falling by 87% between 1976 and 2014. Wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation (BC) needs volunteers to help create and expand current breeding habitat for the butterfly in the Tamar Valley, one of just four locations in the UK where the Heath Fritillary is still found. Woodland restoration work is planned at 10 different sites, thanks to funding from Biffa Award for Rebuilding Diversity. The project will also offer opportunities for people to come and see the butterflies and get involved in the conservation work to protect them, such as taking part in survey work and helping to create the sunny clearings favoured by the butterfly. BC’s Project Officer, Jenny Plackett, said: “There are a number of small colonies in the Tamar valley. We hope to extend the areas occupied by the butterfly and link the sites where it’s already thriving to other sites of suitable habitat, enabling the Heath Fritillary to spread more effectively.
“It’s fantastic that we have been granted this Biffa Award, which will enable this important management work to take place and we are hopeful that the habitat improvements will soon show a positive impact on butterfly numbers – the Heath Fritillary tends to respond very quickly to management.” The butterfly, distinguished by its black and orange dusky wing colours, can be seen throughout June and early July and the Tamar Valley colonies are found in coppiced or newly felled woodland. The Heath Fritillary is one of our smaller fritillaries and has historically been linked with the traditional practice of woodland coppicing, giving it the nickname of the ‘Woodman’s Follower’ as it follows the cycle of cutting around a wood. This butterfly requires sunny clearings with lots of plants for its caterpillar to feed on. The caterpillars generally prefer Common Cow wheat, although in the Tamar Valley sites they will also feed on Ribwort Plantain and Germander Speedwell. If you would like to find out more about the ‘Saving Tamar Valley’s Heath Fritillaries’ project, please contact Jenny Plackett jplackett@butterflyconservation.org

JUNKYARD SKATEPARK
SOUTH WEST Junkyard Skatepark represented the Cornwall region, in this year’s South West Youth Games, with the final being held at Mount Hawke Skatepark in St Agnes. The South West Youth Games were introduced as part of the Millennium Games in 1999, where every county created a Youth Games of their own, with the South West faction going for 18 years. The South West Youth Games is now the largest community sports event for children and young people in Devon and Cornwall, offering over 20 sporting competitions on one day from badminton and gymnastics to dance and street sports including skateboarding, BMX and scootering. The Junkyard Skatepark had a great turn out at the trials with judges
scoring the riders in order to decide who would get to go to the finals and represent the Cornwall region. There was a great team of scooter riders, BMXers and skateboarders with ages ranging from eight to fifteen, who were up against eight other regions including Exeter, East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torbay and Plymouth. The day of events began with each individual team having ten minute runs on the ramps, collecting points all the way going towards the final score. Junkyard Skatepark’s very own secretary of the committee James Lancaster, based in Saltash, took home the gold for the scooter competition, which left everyone buzzing for the regular at the skatepark. The success continued

YOUTH GAMES into the BMX and skateboard competitions with the whole team riding really well, landing trick after trick. The youths had a great day of activities, with a huge crowd of support compiling of friends, family and parents. However, easily the best part of the day for Junkyard Skatepark was the win of the gold medals for the Cornwall region, by scoring the most points throughout the day. Everyone was waiting with baited breath, expecting the win to go to Exeter, so imagine everyone’s surprise when they called out the Cornwall team! Seeing everyone’s faces light up was a priceless moment, with everyone so hyped to be able to take home the gold medals after a long day. Junkyard Skatepark would like to thank everyone who
supported the team on the day, as well as to South West Youth Games for organising the event and Mount Hawke Skatepark for hosting. There’s already so much anticipation and excitement for next year’s event. Lastly though, a big well done to all who took part from the team, to the Junkyard youth workers and volunteers who continue to make the Junkyard Skatepark proud. Skateboarders: Hamish Price, Shay Stone, Finley Mccormick, Kiah Allen, Lola T, Judah Cross, Jacob Cross BMXers: Ben Turner, Jay Andrews, George Ought, Connor Broad, Kian Scooter riders: James Lancaster, Bailey Thomson, Jay Moore, Owen Cole, Alfie Libby, Finley Wandless, Tyler Jones, Taylor.

hundreds flock to pentillie for a day of music
A one-off performance from the inimitable Mad Dog Mcrea performing on a pontoon floating in the middle of the River Tamar at Cornwall’s Pentillie Castle was a roar away success. On Sunday May 21, the much-loved Gaelic band played floating down the river on Weir Quay Boatyard’s pontoon on the Tamar, assisted by folk superstar Seth Lakeman, who made a surprise guest appearance. The audience of some 950 people watched the stunning spectacle from picnic blankets and deck chairs on the estate’s beautiful riverside fields. The performance was arranged less than three weeks ago after Mad Dog Mcrea successfully performed for Weir Quay Boatyard on their new pontoon - then decided to sail on up the river to do a impromptu performance for Pentillie. Everyone loved it so much, they decided to do it again - this time based at Pentillie - and with the public invited.
Local suppliers who rallied round at fairly short notice to provide food and drink included World Pizza, Paul Bray & Son, Harding & Scoots and Salty Rims. People were also encouraged to bring a picnic. Beautiful shepherds hut loos were provided by Signature Blue toilets alongside Andy Loos portaloos. Kite Vision provided an amazing video of the event to record it for posterity. The Pentillie Team said: “It was an amazing experience, watching Mad Dog and Seth Lakeman perform on the river. Hearing them float down the river playing their music was a magical Cornish moment. Thank you to all those who volunteered to help on the day in return for free entry. Everyone who came to the event were extremely respectful and there was very little clean up operation! The tide was right, the weather was perfect, making it a truly unforgettable Pentillie experience.” For more information go to www.pentillie.co.uk or follow the story @pentilliecastle
