Thousands of people in Plymouth regularly raise funds for good causes - and we’re happy to feature two of them in this issue. Plympton father of four Andy Sacker made the news a few years back when he trekked to the North Pole in aid of charity. Not satisfied with that feat, the intrepid entrepreneur is taking on a new challenge - rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic. He hopes to raise £20,000 for the National Autistic Society in the process. We wish him all the best especially as he suffers badly from sea sickness! You can read about Andy’s amazing plans on page 14. Meanwhile, if you don’t have a head for heights, you will be impressed with the efforts of young mum Naomi Temple, who abseiled down the side of Plymouth’s Holiday Inn to raise funds for Derriford’s Gold Dust Appeal. The appeal has a target of £100,000 to create a bright, exciting and welcoming environment throughout the children’s and young people’s areas on Level 12 at Derriford. Naomi decided to do her bit for the appeal as a way of thanking the staff on Woodcock Ward who looked after her young son Jenson, when he was taken seriously ill at the age of just six weeks. Naomi’s story is on page 54. Elsewhere in this issue we meet the family team at the popular Fisherman’s Arms on the Barbican. Donna Phillips and her partner Lee Cameron took over the hostelry two years ago after it been closed for many months. It has become one of the top rated eateries on Trip Advisor, thanks to their successful formula of creating a typical village pub atmosphere in a city centre inn. Plymouth Property News The 22,643 Plymouth Savers batten down the hatches with low interest rates set to continue into the 2020’s You might ask, what has the plight of the Plymouth savers to do with the Plymouth Property Market … everything in fact. Read the newspapers, and every financial Ben Dreher wizard is stating MNAEA that with the Director decision of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee in early August to cut the Bank of England base rate to an alltime low of 0.25 per cent, savers should prepare themselves for interest rates to stay low well into the early 2020’s. ... And this isn’t some made up story to capture the headlines of newspaper editors. The yield (interest rate or return) on 10-year Government bonds is currently at time of writing 0.61 per cent. This indicates that the money markets believe that the Bank of England’s base rate will, on average over the next ten years, be below the 0.61% rate they are buying the 10 year bonds at (because they would lose money if the average was over 0.61%). UK Interest rates are going to be low for a long time. For those who have saved throughout their working lives and are looking for ways to maximize their savings, tying their money into property could prove advantageous. You see as a saver, I did a search of the internet and the best savings rate I could find was a 5

year fixed rate at 2.5% a year. On this basis your £200,000 nest egg would earn you £5,000 a year – not much. However, on the other side of the fence, growth in Plymouth house prices and princely buy to let yields have made property investment in Plymouth an appealing option for many. According to my research, the...

Average Yield over the last five years for Plymouth Buy to let property has been 4.5% a year … and average Property Values in over the same period have risen by 17.1%. Using these averages, the Plymouth landlord’s property would be worth £224,200 and they would have received a total of £45,000 in rent – making the total return £269,200. Meanwhile, whilst our 22,643 Plymouth Saver’s, using the average savings rates for the last 5 years, even if they had reinvested the interest, their £200,000 would only be £221,184. There are risks as well as benefits to buy to let though. As followers of our articles know, at Mansbridge Balment we tell it like it is and investing in buy to let means locking up capital in a property that may fall in value. Another option would be stock market income based investment funds, which are paying around 5%, especially if put your nest egg into a tax free Stocks and Shares ISA. Although you can only add £15,240 a year into an ISA, but you would also have the ability to sell up quickly if you want ... but one last thought…

The other side of the coin is that you cannot buy an unloved ‘stock market income based investment fund’ and set about renovating it and adding value yourself. The investment fund isn’t something that you can touch and feel, isn’t something tangible, isn’t something physical, isn’t something concrete, it isn’t bricks and mortar ... and that is why for many Plymouth homeowners and landlords the British love affair of investing in Property will continue. Natalie loves to be lost in translation One day it might be a complex business document, the following, oysters. Plymouth-based translator Natalie Soper never knows what will arrive in her email inbox next. “I do become a temporary expert in lots of things as part of this job,” said Natalie, who studied French and Spanish at university before completing an MA in Translation Studies. She now translates from French and Spanish into English specialising in business documents as well as the arts and culture sector. “Most translators have their niche, mine is business and corporate documents and I have an interest in arts and culture too, mostly because of my work at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.” After returning from university Natalie worked as a bilingual training co-ordinator at Hemsley Fraser as well as being an usher at the theatre where she continues to live-caption certain performances in a voluntary capacity. “It’s nice to still have that link with the theatre and it’s another way of indulging my love of language,” said Natalie. Setting up her business Bellingua Translations 18 months ago, Natalie used to combine translation work with her theatre shifts but she has now decided to take the plunge and concentrate all her energies on building her business. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else, I love language and every day is a challenge and every day offers something new,” she said. “Lots of people I know have moved to London to work as translators but I want to make it work in Plymouth which is where I’m from and where I love living,” she said. “You can do this kind of work anywhere as long as you have your laptop and the internet and Plymouth is a great place to have a small business. “I’m a member of the Devon Chamber of Commerce too which is a good way of networking and sharing ideas.” There is also a very active online community of translators which Natalie is an enthusiastic part of. “It’s great because if you’re stuck on something or just want some general advice people are really willing to help.”

In October she appeared on Translators on Air - an online talk show for translators and interpreters, sharing hints and tips about how to work with translation agencies. Has she ever encountered a word she has been unable to translate? “Just once, in an extremely complex geology report which had already been translated from Chinese into French,” she said. “I was then translating it from French into English and there were some words for fault lines that I just couldn’t translate. None of my fellow translators could help – so I had to go back to the agency who had given me the work and say I was stumped!” Natalie’s work comes via a variety of translation agencies as well as personal recommendation and her plan is to expand her client base over the next few years and she doesn’t see online translation sites as much of a threat to her business. “Things like Google Translate have their place but a computer can’t add context so, while it might be ok for a bit of help on holiday, important documents need the input of a skilled translator and I can’t see that changing.” Business may be Natalie’s niche but if she could choose just one project to land in her inbox it would be a children’s book. “It’s a really delicate art, translating writing for children, my MA was about the particular challenges of translating Alice in Wonderland and I’d love to get into that area one day.” Brexit is one word which is certain to be coming up a lot in the future and Natalie hasn’t yet come across a foreign language version of it. “So far French and Spanish newspapers have also been using the word Brexit or le Brexit in the case of the French,” said Natalie. “I anticipate seeing it in a lot of translation work in the future - it’s become quite the buzzword!”

A caring environment is child’s play for Jack and Jill Childcare! Jack & Jill’s Childcare isn’t like any other childcare service you’ll find in Plymouth. Run by the charity, The Royal Naval Pre-School Learning Organisation, it has, for the past four decades, provided a caring environment for military, ex-military and civilian families alike. With staff specially trained to look out for and respond to children and parents who might be struggling to cope with separation or loss, Jack & Jill’s is uniquely qualified when it comes to offering support to families when they most need it. Set up in 1972, the charity today has seven sites around the city, most of them in homely settings and all of them with secure outdoor spaces designed for play. Jo Jenkins, area co-ordinator, said: “Our staff don’t just know all of our children, they know their parents too. And this is important because it means they are able to recognise if anyone needs any extra support. We have 40 highly qualified and dedicated staff who go out of their way to make sure everyone is ok.” An integral part of this increased understanding is the charity’s recognition of the Emotional Cycle of Separation that both civilian and service families can experience when a loved one goes away. “We are empathetic to service life and many of us who work here have family members who are in the services,” said Jo. “But the issues faced by service children can apply equally to a number of situations and circumstances that any child might go through. There are times when all children will miss someone.” The charity has put together an ‘Emotions Box’ at each of the seven childcare settings, a sort of ‘tool box’ of carefully selected books and games to help children cope with sad times. A local charity has just provided a £1,000 grant to pay for seven more boxes so that each site has one that can go out to families in times of need. The seven Jack and Jill’s childcare settings are at Plympton, Radford, Goosewell, Crownhill, Eggbuckland, Trevorder and Widewell, where the admin office is also based. All seven are

BUSINESS MATTERS rated ‘Good’ by the schools inspectorate, OFSTED. While some are for pre-school children aged 2-4 years, others, like the purpose-built day nursery in Hillcrest Close, Plympton, take in children aged 0-8 and are open from 8am to 6pm, 50 weeks of the year. Places are currently available at Jack & Jill’s at Plympton, which was completely refurbished in 2013 and accommodates a maximum of 20 children. As well as a large, bright play room, there is also a smaller room for up to three babies and a secure outside play area. Spaces are also available for children aged 2-4 years at Jack and Jill’s Radford, a purpose built premises next to Radford Family Centre in Plymstock, where there is a bright, open play room and a large safe garden. All of the Jack & Jill’s settings offer free flow play, while meal times are a social occasion where staff and children sit down at the table to eat and chat together. The day is deliberately flexible and can take unexpected turns if the children decide on a particular theme: “We want our children to be engaged and learning and we encourage them to have their own ideas,” said Jo. “One of our sites had an impromptu The Radford Family Centre space-themed day because one of the children pretended they were on a space ship. That sparked the imagination in the other children so the staff went with the flow and extended the play through additional resources.” Jack and Jill’s endeavour to keep children safe and healthy in everything they offer and do. Healthy eating, good manners, life skills and becoming school ready are all part of the ethos, while the mission statement sums up what they do in a nutshell: “To provide quality childcare facilities to military and civilian families both in times of peace and conflict, ensuring all children are safe and stimulated through

activities provided through play.” Being a not-for-profit organisation ensures that childcare fees are very competitive for all families, and the charity reinvests back into the childcare settings with the help of a cuddly toy character called Guzz. “Guzz is designed by a local company and is used to raise funds to support children and families to provide excursions and social events throughout the year,” said office administrator Jane Sherrard. “We launched him on Armed Forces Day in June and we’ve sold 200 of him so far.” Guzz – who is named after an old call sign for Devonport Naval Base – is made in South Devon and costs £5 plus p&p. Contact Jane in the Admin office if you’d like a Guzz of your own. Visitors are welcome to view the facilities at any of the Jack & Jill’s childcare sites: “We have an open door policy for parents who want to come and take a look around any of our settings,” said Jo. “It’s very important to us that children and parents are happy and feel welcomed and settled in our groups. Some people think that we are only for military families but that’s not the case; we are here for ALL families.” Morning, afternoon or full days are available, along with school holiday play days and before and after school provision at the Plympton Jack and Jill’s. How your business could benefit from fresh young talent at no cost! An award-winning vocational college in Plymouth is calling on more local businesses to get involved in a European initiative which gives enthusiastic young adults the chance to gain invaluable experience and provides employers with talented people who are eager to contribute. Tellus College on Mutley Plain finds work placements for vocational students from across Europe on a short term basis as part of the EU-funded Erasmus Programme. Some 37 countries have signed up to the programme including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Austria and Romania. The idea is to give young people the opportunity to spend a short time living and working in another European country. In return, employers benefit from the energy and fresh perspective which the students bring. The majority of the students are here for anything between four weeks and three months – although some stay for up to a year. While here, they get to learn about the area, with weekend and evening events organised by the college. Many of the city’s best known companies have been participants for some time, such as Debenhams, River Cottage Canteen, Simply Lets, Rocksalt restaurant, Kitley Pick Your Own, and The Range. The voluntary sector is also a keen partner, with Oxfam, Shekinah and Scope among those who have provided work placement for the students, who are aged 17-25. The programme was launched in the 1980s and Tellus have delivered it in Plymouth for the past 10 years, matching students

with appropriate employers. Twice in the last four years – including last year – Tellus won Student Travel Magazine’s ‘Work Placement of the Year’ Award. As a result of the college’s success, more employer partners are needed. Some have recently stepped up, including Rockfish, Element Design Solutions, Dura Manufacturing and WITT Renewable Energy. In the week that Plymouth Magazine visited Tellus at the beginning of October, 136 students were out and about, working in the city. But, says Kerry Gibson, the college’s work placement development co-ordinator, there are many more who are awaiting placements: “The students are there, the funding is there, we just need more companies who can offer quality placements,” said Kerry. “I think a lot of companies just aren’t aware of the programme. But those who are aware and do work with us have nothing but praise for the students.” WITT Renewable Energy on Plymouth Science Park has just taken on two engineers through Tellus. Mairi Wickett, from the company, explained why they’ve got on board: “As we advance the technology, we will need in-house expertise in transmission design and electronics. I had the great pleasure to discuss our needs with Kerry and she was immediately on the case. Although it is early days we feel this is a great opportunity for WITT Limited.” All of the Tellus students can speak good English, although some will have a short refresher course in the college’s classrooms before heading out to work. “The aim is for everyone involved to find value from the programme,” explained Kerry. “Employers are benefiting from

potentially new ideas or a different way of doing things. For some, with pinch periods during the year, it’s good to have some extra help and our students have a terrific work ethic. “For the students, they are learning about work and life in another country, they’re able to use and improve their English and they’re getting an experience which will be with them for the rest of their lives. “Some of our employer partners are looking for students who have a specific skill or language and this is where we match the skills of each student to their placement,” added Kerry. “The best possible outcome is to have the right person in the right position at the right time!” Tellus currently have students booked to come to Plymouth until 2018, all of them with something to offer: “I know, for example, that we have nine students who will be here in January who want experience in the care sector,” said Kerry. “Others areas are business administration, logistics, mechanical engineering and IT. “Others want to work in hospitality or the charity sector because this gives them the chance to meet the public and to use their English. The voluntary and charity sectors are

Challenge, known as the world’s toughest row. The trio have been training and preparing for the race for more than a year and will be one of up to 30 teams - solos, pairs, trios and fours - from all around the world who head out from Tenerife in the Canary Islands on December 14. It will take upwards of 50 days battling storms, 40 foot waves, adverse weather conditions, hunger and sleep deprivation, before the teams cross the finish line on the Caribbean island of Antigua. Andy, 46, faces another major hurdle in the race - he suffers from sea sickness! Online marketing expert and entrepreneur Andy said: “I had only been on the Torpoint Ferry before, so I’m dreading what we may have to face in the Atlantic!” Andy and his team mates have already been training on the Mediterranean in their specially built boat, which measures just eight metres by two metres. They have also undergone sea survival training and taken part in a range of other activities designed to prepare them for the task ahead. He is spending as much time as possible on the rowing machine at his Plympton home, as well as putting in plenty of weight training. Andy said: “We are three ordinary dads who want to make a positive difference in the lives of others through the charities we support. We also want to be an inspiration to our children and encourage the younger generation to believe that nothing is impossible.” Andy hopes to raise £20,000 for the National Autistic Society - a charity close to his heart as one of his sons is autistic. “The race is the opportunity of a lifetime to raise awareness of autism and how it affects individuals and families,” said Andy. “About one in 100 people in the UK are on the autism spectrum - which means 2.8 million people are affected by autism every day,” he said. the three dads. They first met in 2013 when they took part in a trek to the North Pole. Andy had been inspired by adventurer and motivational speaker Jock Wishart at a business conference the previous year. “He shared that he had walked to the North Pole at the age of 60 and I was blown away,” said Andy. “I thought ‘if he can do it’ then I can do it too. “I had done parachute jumps and walked on hot coals before, but nothing quite prepared me for the North Pole trek. It was life changing.” Andy became close friends with the other two Andy’s and when Andy Styles contacted him two years ago to invite him to take part in the Atlantic Challenge he jumped at the chance. “I will be away from my family at Christmas, which is the hardest part, but my fantastic wife Julie and the children have been really supportive,” he said. The trio have established a website www.a-adventures. co.uk which has details of the event and information on the sponsorship opportunities available. Andy said: “We already have a number of corporate and individual sponsors, but we would welcome more. “The event attracts global media coverage with National Geographic being the official broadcast sponsor. We really hope to secure a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a trio of rowers.”

Donna Phillips and her partner Lee Cameron took over the historic Fisherman’s Arms in the Barbican in December 2014 - and the business has gone from strength to strength ever since. With page after page of positive reviews on Trip Advisor and a faithful following of regular customers, Donna and Lee will have plenty to celebrate on their second anniversary in the pub next month. “It was a huge leap of faith when we bought the Fisherman’s, “ said Donna. “It had been closed for several months and everybody thought we were crazy when we sold our home to secure the property.” Donna’s dad Barry was a publican in Plymouth for 35 years and he always told his daughter: ‘Never take on a pub.’ But even Barry admits he was wrong. “They have Donna Phillips with Mr Jones and the ale named after him been extremely astute and I’m delighted they have succeeded by getting back to basics.” The Fisherman’s Arms, which is one of the oldest pubs in the city, is now a real family affair. Lee’s sister Clare is bar manager, while her partner John Paul Rimmer is one of the chefs - along with Lee, whose parents were in the catering trade. Barry is very much a part of the team as well, helping out in many different ways, while Lee’s eldest son Andrew also works part time at the hostelry. pub food, a warm and welcoming environment and a great selection of ales and wines. One of the pub’s beer has actually be named after Mr Jones, the couple’s miniature Schnauzer. Produced by Plymouth’s Summerskills Brewery the ale is, appropriately, named ‘The Famous Mister jones’ and is a firm favourite with customers. While the pub’s real ales attract a growing number of customers, its food is also proving a big draw. Food is served from 12 noon to 3pm and from 6pm to 9pm and from midday until 8pm on Sundays. An extensive menu - including lighter meals at lunchtime - is available weekdays, but on Sunday it’s just the traditional roast - at just £6.95. Lee said: “Everything on our menu is freshly cooked from scratch and the Sunday roasts, in particular, are hugely popular.” The main menu includes British pub favourites such as beer battered cod and chunky chips, slow cooked gammon egg and chips, home made curry or chilli, mussels in white wine and garlic sauce and Cumberland sausage and mash. With mains starting at just £7.95, and a selection of vegetarian dishes from £6.95, the Fisherman’s Arms has succeeded by offering good food at affordable prices. There’s not only a children’s menu - but also a special dog’s dinner menu for customers who take their canine companions to the hostelry! A daily specials board invariably features a choice of seafood dishes and a selection of home made desserts are also available at £4.50. The stars of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs brought some early Christmas cheer to Plymouth as they officially launched this year’s spectacular Theatre Royal Plymouth pantomime. Duncan James, perfectly cast in the role of The Prince and Ben Nickless, as Muddles, were joined at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel by Charlotte Haines who will play the title role of Snow White. Duncan James can currently be seen playing the role of Ryan in the popular Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks. He has also recently starred as Tick in the UK tour of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Duncan rose to fame in boyband Blue in 2001 who racked up forty number one singles worldwide, three number one albums and sales of over 16 million records. Ben Nickless career took off in 2006 when he appeared on the BBC television series Let Me Entertain You alongside Brian Conley and Christine Bleakly. Since then, Ben has become popular on the comedy circuit and has played Muddles, this comic role in pantomime, numerous times. Charlotte Haines trained at the Guilford School of Acting and since then has appeared in various productions such as My Cousin Rachel, Stone Cold Murder and Sleeping Beauty. This will be Charlotte’s second time playing Snow White for Qdos Entertainment. Also starring, as The Wicked Queen, will be one of the nation’s best-loved actresses Lesley Joseph. Volunteer Vivien is all smiles again - thanks to Foot Solutions Retired accountant Vivien Warne is a keen walker who regularly treks dozens of miles every week. But her favourite pastime was brought to a standstill earlier this year when she started to experience severe pain in her knees, ankles and feet. It not only affected her ability to walk very far, but also had an impact on her work as a volunteer in the Exhibition Centre at Ford Park Cemetery, where she was used to spending long periods of time on her feet. Vivien had a knee replacement seven years ago and everything had been fine until last year when her knee started to ache and then a few months later she experienced severe pain in her ankle as well. Vivien, who lives in Woodford, said: “As a result of the pain I was suffering, I had a rheumatology review of my knee, which identified that I had arthritis in my ankle along with fallen arches in my feet.” Vivien was also having regular physiotherapy treatment to help ease the condition. She said: “The pain was so severe that I could hardly walk at all. I had heard of Foot Solutions and decided that I needed to do something more to try and overcome the situation. “I caught the bus to Royal Parade and went into Foot Solutions to see if they could help me.” An extensive assesment of Vivien’s feet and posture was carried out which identified that in addition to the problem with her knee and ankle she also had plantar fasciitis, a common condition which causes pain under the heel. Vivien was initially provided with an off-the-shelf ankle support and heel pads to help ease the discomfort while custom-made insoles were made for her. Vivien said: “The difference was incredible. The sharp pain went and I could walk further than I had for months. When I next saw my physio he could see the difference Foot Solutions had made.

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday with a gala concert of the most popular British music.

Philharmonia Orchestra, London Mozart Players and Royal Philharmonic Concert orchestra performing in major venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Bath and Gstaad Festivals. The Battle of Agincourt from the Henry V suite is Walton’s second appearance in the programme followed by the very recognisable and rousing ‘bringer of war’ – Jupiter from Holst’s The Planets suite. Edward Elgar’s popular Enigma Variations were composed between 1898 and 1899 as an orchestral piece with 14 variations. After the premiere of the work in London in 1899 the variations were immediately popular and helped to establish Elgar’s international

The latest in Jeanie Moore’s International Concert Series features a flute recital by Guo Yue at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel on November 16. Guo Yue is a virtuoso of the Chinese bamboo flute (dizi) and bawu Chinese free reed pipe (bawu). He was born in Beijing, China and as a young boy experienced the Cultural Revolution. In 1982 Yue left China for England, where he went on to study the silver flute at the Guildhall School of Music. He plays many kinds of bamboo flute and currently lives in London, recording for Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. His music is inspired by the images and sounds of his childhood in China.

Thousands of people will flock to the city centre for this popular annual event, with entertainment starting from 4pm. There will be something for all the family as the city prepares for another bumper yuletide. Plymouth’s Christmas Market returns to the heart of Plymouth City Centre from December 1 to 18 and will see over 50 stalls in the style of traditional pretty log cabins selling the best arts, crafts and foods from around the South West. New for this year is the Bavarian style bar with heated seating area where shoppers will be able to sit and soak in the atmosphere. Also new for this year and in the heart of the market there will be a large marquee which will be host to a selection of entertainment in the form of choirs and singers performing all your favourite Christmas songs Thursday – Sunday every week. Visitors will also be able to pick up a real Christmas tree from Rise Garden Centre who can also be found in the marquee. They are offering a deliver to car service for a donation to charity. Visitors to the market will be able to enjoy an array of local produce to sample or to pick up that unique Christmas gift for that special someone. Trading Hours will be: Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm (late night until 9pm on Thursday); Sunday 10am to 5pm. Parents and children can visit Santa’s Grotto in Drake Circus Shopping Centre from November 17 to December 24. Make the children’s dreams come true by taking them to visit Santa in his magical grotto. Meanwhile Plymouth will host the third Illuminate and Thanksgiving event on Thursday November 24. Plymouth wrestling ‘Showdown’ event Plymouth Wrestling Association are debuting a brand new event in the city in November. Entitled ‘Showdown’ the event promises an encounter of epic proportions, as ‘The Belgian Bull’ Robin Lekime challenges Plymouth Wrestling Association heavyweight champion Tyler Hawke for his wrestling crown. The main event will be about much more than the title after the events that unfolded at PWA’s September Slam, with ‘The Belgian Bull’ choking out the champion before then going on to beat down PWA ring announcer Luke Parnell. After the destruction that was caused by ‘The Belgian Bull’ in the September Slam, organisers were keen to get the match on as soon as possible and arranged the event for November 13 at the Plymouth School of Creative Arts in Millbary, starting at 6.30pm. The event will feature a fantastic undercard, which will include up and coming PWA star Max Alexander getting his first opportunity at PWA gold, as he wrestles Grayson Reeves for the PWA British Championship.

The show follows the story of Snowy the Fluffy Snow Creature and the frightfully charming deer as they work with the audience to save Christmas and remember how it can bring joy to all. Classic Victorian elegance with a 21st century twist Mark and Alison visited the KF Kitchens showroom in Faraday Mill and were immediately impressed with the huge range of kitchen styles available. They discussed their requirements with the KF Kitchens team - Nathan and Derinda Damarell and fellow director Simon Rice – and began working on design ideas. The Ashwell’s spacious new kitchen features units painted in soft grey with antique bronze handles and knobs and white Unistone worktops in Carrara Letano. A centrepiece island accommodates a breakfast bar and features a contrasting Colonial White granite worktop with units coloured Slate. Also incorporated in the island is a marble sink with Quooker boiling water tap, which provides hot, cold and constant boiling water from one tap.

A range of units along one wall include two built-in eye-level NEFF ovens and a NEFF induction hob. One oven is a compact NEFF Steam Oven and the other a conventional NEFF oven with slide and hide doors. Rita’s work on show at the Artmill Gallery

Talented contemporary artist Rita Smith’s latest one person show runs until November 5 at the Artmill Gallery in Hyde Park Road, Peverell. Rita is a contemporary artist whose career began as an abstract painter, making large oil paintings based on urban landscape, architecture and interior spaces. During this period she also began experimenting with watercolours, both abstract and figurative, exploring mood and atmosphere, attempting to bring a richness not normally found in the medium. Speaking about her latest show Rita said: “I have drawn together a selection of work which appears to come from two very different approaches to painting - still life and abstract but which share the theme of ‘Interior Views.’ “Still life is my everyday meditation on the tangible objects of domestic life, seeking poetry and purity in the lovely transparent medium of watercolour, while abstract painting allows me to contemplate the inner life beyond the tangible outer world and gives me freedom to explore the richness and texture of both oil and watercolour paint.” The show is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 10am to 4pm. Until Nov 17 DOUGLAS GORDON: SEARCHING FOR GENIUS Peninsula Arts Gallery Explore ideas about talent, skill and genius with this exhibition featuring a selection of acclaimed works by Turner Prize-winning artist Douglas Gordon. Gordon’s works are shown alongside some personal items of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). The Plympton-born portrait artist and founder of the Royal Academy who believed that genius could be acquired through dedicated study and hard work. From the skill of an international footballer, to the glamour and aura of pop stars, the talent of a composer and filmmaker, to the vision of a famed artist, this exhibition poses questions about what genius is and how it is achieved. See the acclaimed moving image installation ‘Feature Film’ (1999) alongside a selection of works from Gordon’s ‘Self Portrait of You + Me’ series alongside Reynolds’ spectacles. An accompanying series of talks and films further explores notions of genius and its impact on history and the present. She’s 23ft tall and 30ft wide and she’s made out of bronze… meet the new ‘star’ who Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) hopes will be making her debut appearance soon. Theatre bosses have unveiled plans for a giant sculpture inspired by a character from one of Shakespeare’s best known plays to be sited outside the theatre’s main entrance. At the time of going to press, Plymouth City Council was due to consider a planning application from the theatre for the sculpture. If you’re finding it hard to visualise, imagine the top of the sculpture reaching the second floor of the theatre and the lower section forming an archway for people to walk through. The sculpture is a collaboration between the theatre, award-winning London theatre company Frantic Assembly and Cornish-born sculptor Joseph Hillier. If all goes to plan, Joseph is ready to start work in December, with the grand unveiling taking place in 2018. The £450,000 piece of public art would be funded from TRP’s £7.5m regeneration project. The statue is inspired by Bianca from TRP and Frantic Assembly’s co-production of Othello. At a media launch of the project, the chief executive of TRP, Adrian Vinken OBE, said it was “very exciting news for the city of Plymouth and the journey it is currently on.” He said: “As part of the theatre’s regeneration we wanted to make a statement that this is a centre of ideas and of creativity. We wanted a public, tangible statement of that.” And he said that the theatre’s regeneration was part of a wider picture that could be seen across Plymouth as a whole: “For a while there was a feeling that the city had lost its way and had lost its sense of ambition. But in the past 10 to 15 years there has been a resurgence of ambition. There’s now a sense of pride and confidence.”

The idea for Bianca grew – quite literally – as a result of an earlier commission in 2014 when Joseph was asked by TRP to produce 21 small sculptures based on the Othello production, which was one of the first to be staged at the venue following the refurbishment. The tragedy had originally had its World Premiere at the theatre in 2008. These 21 pieces can be found dotted throughout the theatre. The original, small Bianca – based on the performance by Frantic Assembly’s Nicola Kavanagh – can be found under the stairs. Joseph explained: “I said to Adrian: ‘This piece would work really well as a big, public sculpture where you could walk through it’. It all came out of that conversation.” For his research, Helston-born Joseph has spent time on stage in rehearsals with the actors so that he could “get a feeling of freezing that motion and depicting time and movement” through a piece of sculpture. Joseph, who lives near Newcastle, usually works in his own studio but for this piece he would have to work in a converted foundry. A team of around 15 people would be needed to work on the sculpture at one stage or another. The sculpture will be made in three or four sections before being put together. This isn’t the largest public sculpture Joseph has ever been asked to create, however. In 2009, he made the 55ft steel piece, ‘In Our Image,’ in County Durham. Director and co-founder of Frantic Assembly, Scott Graham, said the plans were another example of TRP’s “bravery and ambition”. For TRP, the statue would be an “eye-catching landmark to rival other cities in the UK” and would reemphasise the theatre’s reputation as a big player in the arts. Adrian Vinken also believes it will give the city something to be proud of: “There is always a difference of opinion when it comes to public art,” he admitted, “but when pieces become established, you try taking them away again!”

A lot of the flooring is designed and manufactured in the UK – a conscious decision by Natalie and a response to an increasing trend. Although primarily serving the residential market, Love Flooring also supplies and fits at retail units and for property landlords. The shop has samples and brochures and can also source the brand of your choice. All the flooring is compatible with underfloor heating. For Natalie, opening the shop is like a dream come true. For a start, she loves all the designs she stocks! And, after a career in HR, she’s enjoying the change: “Matthew has been a fitter for about 15 years and has run Vista Flooring for seven years. I was working in HR and we thought it would be nice to get a shop,” explained Natalie. “We wanted to open it in the Hyde Park area because it’s full of lovely independent shops, so when this place became available, we jumped in. It took us a couple of months to get it looking just the way we wanted it but we’re really happy with the shop and where we are. The other traders have been very supportive and we’re really pleased with the response we’ve had from our customers. We couldn’t have asked for a better start.” Natalie runs the shop from Monday to Thursday, with Matthew coming in on Fridays and Saturdays while Natalie looks after their two young sons. Havana great time By Travel Expert

My recent visit to Havana fulfilled another of my 'bucket list' must do trips before I hang up my travelling shoes. In truth I knew very little about Cuba, but somewhere at the back of my mind I was sure the week ahead was going to be a bit of an eye-opener.

Before I launch into any detail I think it’s worth mentioning that there are three distinct sides to this vast island and it unlikely that all of them will appeal to you. I ended my stay with a couple of nights in Cuba’s largest beach resort, Varadero, and that is where I will begin. The beaches here are stunning by any measure. Miles of soft white sand, blue skies and a warm inviting sea add up to a picture perfect sunshine holiday destination. Accommodation within the resort ranges from modest 4-star holiday hotels right up to top-draw couples only 5-stars. Personally I feel the more basic hotels are where the true value lies, after all you’re visiting a new country and it seems a shame to closet yourself away in sterile luxury. I don’t think anyone could say Cuba is the place to visit for haute cuisine and trading Photo: Fotolia © kmiragaya up your hotel choice food standards should rank high. Generally though expect good size swimming pools, buffet style eating and amazing beaches. Out of interest, branded soft drinks seemed much harder to come by than mainstream spirits, a real turn on the head from much of the world’s allinclusive offerings. My stay at the modern Melia Marina Hotel was comfortable and I think it represented a great mid-range choice. The bottom line here is that my enduring memory of Varadero is relaxing on the sand and swimming in the clear blue sea. If that’s your idea of a perfect holiday stop reading now. If you’re still with me it’s time for some culture Cuba style. The

first thing you will notice is that the cars are old – and I mean old. We all have that vision of the pristine antique American cars parked outside vibrant coloured Havana houses. They do exist, but outside the capital vehicle standards slip to an almost pitiful level. This is your first reminder that this Communist controlled society has shut itself away from the Western World for decades. Cars are a privilege of the few and the majority of locals travel around packed into ageing charabancs or perched precariously on the back of flatbed lorries. The law in Cuba is simple: if you have a vehicle and you have space then you are obliged to take passengers. Just in case you don’t fancy sharing with others, a Government official is positioned every mile or two to enforce the rules. Thankfully tourist and party members are exempt. Surprisingly the roads are well maintained and traffic flows quite freely. A hire car would be a viable option to get the best out of Varadero, but I would advise against touring the countryside unaccompanied. The lack of commercialism here is best illustrated by a total lack of advertising. Can you imagine a day without encountering McDonalds or Coca Cola along the way? In Cuba, apart from the occasional roadside poster-board bearing the name Fidel and maybe the national flag, there is no branding to be seen. What you are left with is long straight roads bordered by lush tropical greenery and a surreal feeling of calm. I never at any time felt unsafe. I spent my time between Havana and Veradero taking in some small towns viewing Casa’s (privately run guesthouses) and more boutique style properties. Hotel space is at a premium in Cuba so your budget and availability may dictate that a Casa is the only viable overnight option. These family-run lodgings are relatively basic, but the owners are extremely accommodating. Because of the distances involved I feel a night or two at a Casa would be perfectly acceptable as a means to an end for an adventurous holidaymaker seeking an authentic taste of the Island. Cuba boasts several UNESCO World Heritage sites. At the Valle de Viñales spectacular limestone mountains rise up through a sea of green tobacco fields to create a stunning landscape, while a visit to the old city of Trinidad rewards visitors with striking colonial architecture and museums. I was particularly fortunate that my overnight stay in Spanish

The official mantra isn't complicated; • Christopher Columbus discovered the island on 28th October 1492 • The Nobel Prize winning author Ernest Hemingway took-up a boozy residence of Daiquiri’s and Mojito’s between 1940 & 1960 • Fidel Castro ably assisted by Che Guevara led the Cuban Revolution (1953–59) There are many sites to seek out devoted to this condensed view of the past and visiting them helped me in my understanding of why the Cuban people seem so remarkably content with their lot. I am not sure they really know what their country has been saved from, but they passionately worship their liberators none the less. Cuba is large, but it would still be possible to take in many of these places on extended day trips if the thought of a rural Casa stay was a little daunting. My own thoughts are that the average Brit would get most out of a twin centre Havana/Beach combination with perhaps the odd excursion. I started my stay at The Parque Central Hotel which as its name suggests is bang in the centre of Havana. It wasn’t very long before I fell in love with the place. Havana oozes attitude combining a glorious colonial past with a buzzing capital city vibe. It doesn’t seem to matter that half the buildings are falling down, why worry when the sun is shining and the cocktails are flowing? One morning I was lucky enough to take a tour of the town courtesy of a vintage convertible Chevrolet. I would have happily spent the whole day cruising the seafront and drinkingin that exhilarating feeling only truly iconic cities exude. I got a glimpse of the scale of the new building projects now underway and I hope with all my heart they get it right. Havana is quite simply unique. American citizens will be descending on Cuba for the first time in over 50 years from this November. I fully expect they will be accompanied by all the merchandising and branding which Cuba has resisted for so long. The good news is that you don’t have to spend all day up to your ears in chemicals, scrubbing away at all those nooks and crannies to seemingly little avail; you can put your feet up and let Keith Zachlod from Oveanclean Plymouth do the job for you – and without the use of caustic materials. Keith even removes all of the parts that can be taken out and deep cleans them in a tank of boiling water in his van, using the advanced Ovenclean system. The result, say his customers, is an oven that looks almost as good as new. Keith has been the Ovenclean franchise holder for Plymouth and the surrounding area since May and already has over a dozen reviews on the Checkatrade website, scoring an almost perfect average rating of 9.98. The reviews, all verified as genuine by Checkatrade, include comments such as “absolutely outstanding,” “brilliant,” “looks as good as new and a very good price,” “very good and I will be using him again,” and “Keith was meticulous; using a head torch to help show signs of dirt. I paid the price quoted and the oven looks like new again. Thank you, very happy.” To prove the point, before and after photos can be viewed on the Checkatrade site. And it’s not just ovens and hobs that are left looking sparkling; Keith also cleans barbecues, microwaves and extractor fans and will replace worn extractor filters, too. Plymouth Magazine visited one happy customer in Plymstock to see Keith’s work at first hand and to interview the householder, Michelle. Michelle called in Keith to clean her range, grill and hob – and was blown away by the results: “I was very impressed by the attention to detail,” she said. “He didn’t miss a thing. And taking out everything that wasn’t fixed – including the

oven fan – and putting it through the deep clean system resulted in a far better clean than I imagined. “There were no abrasive materials and because no caustic chemicals were used either, it meant there were no smells and I could use my oven straight away. “I’m amazed at how the Range looks now,” she added. As well as the shining results and the less environmentally damaging materials used, Keith says another selling point with customers is that he offers a fixed price in a pricing structure, irrespective of the oven’s condition. The prices range from £45 for a single oven to £95 for a range. The work takes 2-4 hours. Keith advises people who are thinking of buying a new appliance to contact him first: “I’ve had some customers ask if their oven can be salvaged and they said they were considering chucking it out! But after it’s been cleaned it looks almost new again.” Keith also advises householders to have their ovens, grills and hobs cleaned once a year. A build-up on grills and hobs can even be a fire risk: “Regular cleaning prolongs the life of your oven and keeps it safe and hygienic.” At the moment, Keith is busy doing pre-Christmas cleans: “People don’t want their ovens looking grubby with visitors

coming round,” he said. “In fact, I had one lady customer who had her oven cleaned because her sister was visiting for the first time in over three years and it was like a Royal visit!” Keith underwent Ovenclean’s specialist training when he joined the franchise in May; before that, he had been a floor layer with the same company for 20 years: “It was a big step for me to take,” said Keith. “But I wanted the freedom and independence of being my own boss and I am really enjoying it. I like meeting people, that’s one of the nicest parts of the job, and seeing customers look so pleased with my work gives me a lot of pleasure, too. “And the customer reviews I’ve received have been brilliant. Why dentists are a little weird!

Watching Poldark recently there was a scene where he was wondering around an underground Cornish mine with only a candle lamp to light the way, struggling to find a thin vein of copper somewhere on the wall of the mine. On a different scale it reminded me of the difficulty for dentists looking around in the dark trying to find minute cracks in teeth or other tiny problems that are causing pain, but just how lucky we By are nowadays to have great technology available to help of John Moore Dental with this sort of thing. You might have noticed your dentist wearing a funny headlamp light and odd looking spectacles with big lenses in front of his or her eyes: the lenses are to magnify what is being looked at and the light is of course to make it easier to see clearly and it is remarkable how effective (and necessary!!) this is in helping both you and your dentist or hygienist to achieve good quality care. But just try this simple experiment: hold a mirror in your hand and use it to look at a clock on the wall. Telling the time is quite awkward as everything is back to front! Now imagine that the mirror is only 2cm wide and then having to do precision work using an image that is both upside down AND back to front AND in a dark place! Although with time and practice it does of course become second nature for your dentist, it is one of the things that makes dentists slightly weird, as not many other jobs require this odd way of working.

Horizon programme will help put Plymouth on the cultural map Plymouth Culture is a body that exists to develop the city’s cultural scene. Its simple mission is to nurture creative talent, help to engage more Plymothians with arts and culture, support major culture projects and also help facilitate international projects. In partnership with Plymouth City Council, Visual Arts South West, city arts organisations and local artists, Plymouth Culture has been helping to develop an ambitious visual art plan for the city. ‘Horizon’ is Plymouth Cultures two-year initiative for Plymouth and has been awarded £635,000 from Art Council England’s ‘Ambition for Excellence’ funding programme. Starting this November, the two-year Horizon strategy will develop four major arts festivals and events, support a talent development programme for artists and visual arts producers, and will enable communities to commission visual artworks. The ambitious Horizon programme will feature the ‘Atlantic Project’, a major international public

art festival (2018); two editions of the ‘Plymouth Art Weekender’ festival (2017 and 2018) and the ‘Three Towns’ project, a cross-city art exhibition working alongside communities in Stonehouse and Devonport (2017). Young mum Na out for Gold Du Young mum Naomi Temple has abseiled off the roof of the Holiday Inn hotel in Plymouth to help raise vital funds for the children’s wards and the ‘brilliant staff’ who cared for her son, Jenson. When Jenson was just six weeks old he was very poorly with bronchiolitis and was rushed to Derriford Hospital. He was cared for on Woodcock Ward but his condition deteriorated and he was moved to the children’s high dependency unit. He was later transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he was treated for two weeks. He recovered well and all was fine until June this year when he developed the infection again and, due to the damage to his lungs from the previous episode, he was admitted to Derriford’s Woodcock Ward for treatment. This time he remained in hospital for four days. “When Jenson was admitted to Derriford, it was the single most terrifying experience of my life,” said Naomi. “The staff on Woodcock Ward were brilliant and very caring. They kept me and Sash [Jenson’s dad] very well informed of any changes in his treatment. “Unfortunately he nearly went into cardiac arrest. The staff were very quick to respond to this but decided he needed more specialised care, hence he was transferred to the high dependency unit and then the intensive care unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital. “When he returned to Woodcock Ward the second time

WORLD CEREBRAL PALSY DAY Wednesday 5 October 2016, is World Cerebral Palsy Day.

World Cerebral Palsy is aimed at not only raising awareness of the condition but also to gather ideas from people with cerebral palsy and their carers as to how their lives could be made better, and make the best of those ideas a reality. There are 17 million people across the world living with cerebral palsy. Another 350 million people are closely connected to a child or adult with Cerebral Palsy. It is the most common physical disability in childhood. Cerebral Palsy is a permanent disability that aﬀects movement. Its impact can range from a weakness in one hand, to almost a complete lack of voluntary movement. It is a complex disability: 1 in 4 children with Cerebral Palsy cannot talk, 1 in 3 cannot walk, 1 in 2 has an intellectual disability, 1 in 4 has epilepsy. Approximately 10% of children with

cerebral palsy suﬀer from this condition as a result of complications that happen at birth. In some of those cases it is possible to prove that diﬀerent management of the birth may have avoided this type of injury happening.

Fir the best trees So it’s that time of year again and I have been out to the plantations looking for lovely Christmas trees! Take a look at some of the pictures - anyone for a 20 feet tree? Perfect for a top floor apartment! Basil particularly enjoyed our trip to the plantation‚ running in and out of rows of trees, chasing lots of smells from wildlife including some deer we saw in the distance. It was a lovely sunny day and the trees looked great. Really good shapes and when the grower says ‘this is your type of tree Fiona’ you know it’s going to be a good year for getting what we want and what the customers want. This year we will get a lot of Norway Spruce from this supplier as they will be cut fresh and delivered within a couple of days, exactly what you want. Next month we will give you more information on how to take care of your tree, but here is the brief run down on varieties for those who may not be experienced fresh tree buyers. There are three types of Christmas trees which we stock and each look and feel different. The first is the Nordmann Fir which is the most popular. This is a gorgeous tree, with deep green, long, waxy needles. The needles are soft to the touch and densely packed on the branches. Nordmann Firs are wide bushy trees that form the typical Christmas tree, triangle shape. They have densely packed branches that are strong and sturdy, making them great candidates to be heavily decorated and will support your lights with ease. They are the best for holding on to their needles. The most popular sizes are the six foot and seven foot trees; these sell out quickly, so either order from us in advance and we will choose a great looking tree for you or come down early before they sell out. Our next needle retaining tree is the Fraser Fir. These are still a relatively new tree to be offered, and many people still do not know about them, but they are gaining in popularity. These are known as slim line trees. They have a narrower shape to them than traditional trees, but still retain that iconic conical shape. They are great trees for those where space is limited, or perhaps want a more modern, contemporary Christmas tree. The needles are bluey green colour with an almost silver sheen to them. They are slightly stiffer than a Nordmann Fir’s needles, but are not prickly. They also have an extremely pleasant scent that will waft throughout your home. The branches tend to be full and dense, giving the tree a full appearance. The last type of tree we stock is the traditional Norway Spruce. This the good old fashioned tree that people have been decorating since Victorian times. It has the classical conical shape and the delicious pine scent we all associate with Christmas. It has stood the test of time and many of our customers will not choose anything else. It’s a beautiful tree, but it does shed its needles and the needles are very prickly. However it is a great tree to use in a cool room, and they are very good value for money. The needles are fine and narrow, and cover the branches and arms. These are very bushy, full trees. Big can be beautiful....

here is what is looking good at this time of year: Cercis canadensis (Forest Pansy), is a dramatic small tree that is perfect for a focal point in smaller gardens, or used as a splash of colour in larger gardens to break up the greenery. It is primarily grown for its beautiful, striking, heart shaped leaves that are ruby red in spring, turning to rich plum in summer. In the autumn, the leaves turn bright crimson and amber before falling. This has got to be one of the most beautiful trees there is, especially when the sunlight illuminates the leaves from behind, they glow! It also has the added bonus of pink, pea like flowers in the spring. The flowers are formed on bare branches, before the leaves come through in the spring. Ideally grow it in full sun, where it can be backlit in the evening to appreciate it at its best, however it will grow happily in dappled to partial shade, the colours of the foliage just won’t be as strong. It will grow to a small tree in the ground to around 4-5m (12-15ft) in height and spread, but can be kept contained and pruned in a pot where it will grow to a height and spread of 2-4m (6-12ft). Nandina Domestica ‘Obsessed’ is a beautiful dwarf evergreen shrub commonly known as Heavenly Bamboo, as the leaves can resemble that of a bamboo, but is not related to them in any way. Nandina is primarily grown for its handsome foliage, which is a fiery shade of red in the autumn and a burgundy, plum colour when it first emerges in spring, before turning golden then to a rich green as it ages. The conical clusters of white flowers it produces in midsummer are also attractive and turn to red berries when they have faded and add further to the plants appeal. It is a great plant for patio pots where it will provide year-round interest, as well as being a colourful addition to beds and borders. It grows to a height and spread of approximately 60cm (2ft) and likes a sunny to partially shaded position in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil. See you when the Christmas tree madness starts!
