Vicar and a Janner on their chopper bikes for charity! Two Milehouse men, Father Richard Silk from St Bartholomew’s Church and Phil Reed an engineer from Devonport Dockyard, have cycled over 100 miles on chopper bikes – the iconic children’s bikes which became popular in the 1970s to raise cash for a local charity. The intrepid duo raised over £1,500 for St Luke’s Hospice. They took ‘Route 27’ from Ilfracombe to Plymouth - a common route that many keen cyclists have ridden over the years. Many riders do it in just one day but Father Richard and Phil wanted to do something a little different and chose to have some fun on chopper bikes. The ‘grown up’ kids had on simple aim - to raise funds for St Luke’s Hospice, a place of extreme importance to the people of Plymouth, the South Hams and Dartmoor and their families who rely on their valuable help. Before their journey Father Richard said: “Two fortysomething blokes messing around on their choppers may sound fun, but it’s not that easy! These choppers are small for us and so will be quite a challenge but the big challenge is to raise funds for St Luke’s.” The journey was 107 miles long and lasted over four days stopping overnight at Bideford, Okehampton and Tavistock eventually returning to a welcome party at the Mayflower Steps on Plymouth Barbican Saltash businessman Steve Tibbs of M&T Plumbing has spoken of how pleased he was to take part in the last leg

of the unusual cycle ride. Having come across details of the ride on Facebook, Steve, whose local plumbing business has been in the family for over 20 years said he was keen to join in the fun being a big chopper enthusiast himself. Steve said: “When I came across Father Richard and Phil’s ‘A Vicar and a Janner on their Choppers’ Facebook page I couldn’t resist getting in touch and asking to get involved! I’m part of a group of local chopper enthusiasts, known as the Kernow Kroosers and we all own chopper bikes which we regularly go out for rides on together.” Steve was touched by St Luke’s in the past as he sadly lost his brother in law with St Luke’s providing him and his family with much-needed support. “When I saw that they were doing the ride in aid of St Luke’s I couldn’t resist giving them a donation of £700, with the help of some of my suppliers,” said Steve. Steve and the Kernow Kroosers joined Fr Richard and

Phil part way through the last leg of their ride back to Plymouth and helped to spur them on the finish line. After returning Phil said: “It was tough going and a lot hillier than we had hoped for. We had to leave behind our trailer on day three as it was just too heavy to take with us and spending two nights sleeping on the floor of a church hall and a community centre also took its toll. “We were motivated and spurred on by all out supporters on Facebook, the lovely people we met on the journey, the riders that joined us on the last leg and the kind donations that people were sending as we took our journey all who we can’t thank enough.” Having enjoyed their experience Father Richard and Phil are thinking about what their next chopper challenge could be next year... Nicola raises thousands for children’s charity A Plymouth woman has climbed Mt Kilimanjaro to raise £8,000 for a charity that is helping her sister’s family stay together while her nephew is seriously-ill.

A special event is being held in Plymouth to celebrate excellence in the city’s care sector in May.

Nicola Franklin, 31, successfully reached the peak of the highest free-standing mountain in the world for Ronald McDonald House Charities, an independent charity that provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families with children in hospital. Nicola’s sister Lisa and brother-in-law Ben were first given a place to stay at the Charity’s House in Manchester, one of 14 Houses in the UK, when their baby son Dylan was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2014. The couple were staying with Ben’s family in Burnley over Christmas when they were told that Dylan would need to have treatment at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, over 200 miles from their home in Aldershot, Hampshire. Ben and Lisa were able to stay at Ronald McDonald House Manchester for four months while Dylan was poorly in hospital in early 2015 and have unfortunately had to return as Dylan relapsed in August. This return to the House has also brought

new challenges for the family as Lisa was pregnant at the time and recently gave birth to the couple’s second child, Florence.

magnitude of the challenge I’d taken on.

On completing the challenge Nicola said: “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, both mentally and physically. Although struggling quite badly with altitude sickness, giving up was never an option.

Donations can still be made on www.justgiving.com/NicolaFranklinclimbsmountkili/8 or by texting MJMK68 plus an amount to 70070.

‘Celebrating Excellence in Care: Plymouth 2016’ is being held at the New Continental Hotel on Saturday May 14. The event will be a chance to showcase and recognise best practice across care in Plymouth, from nursing homes and care homes to those who provide care in people’s homes, and the New Continental Hotel is Plymouth’s first hotel to achieve ‘Dementia Friendly’ status. If successful it is hoped that this will become an annual event. There will also be a ‘People’s Choice’ category which can be voted for by members of the public at peopleschoice@plymouth.gov.uk There will also be a raffle with proceeds going towards the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund at Derriford Hospital.

NM4 at RWY in July Native Makers will descend on Royal William Yard this summer.

Creative team Rosie Drake-Knight and Emily Dymond have been working on Native Makers since 2014, when they hosted their first event. “We had a vision of a local marketplace for high quality products, made by South West based emerging craftspeople,” said Emily. “We started Native Makers because there was nothing like this already. We wanted to be a part of something like this in Plymouth and so we had to create it ourselves. If there were two of us who wanted this kind of platform then we knew there would be more so we gave it a go! That was two years ago and look at where we are today - on the cusp of our fourth event with over 50 emerging, local makers in our current cohort. We are constantly amazed by the support and encouragement from everyone who has followed our journey so far.’ Native Makers 4 looks to be a much larger event than ever before, with foodie exhibitors, live music from Knee Deep Festival and all kinds of creative entertainment, not to mention the shopping opportunities! Rosie and Emily describe the summer event to be a festival style day out.

Rosie said: “We want to celebrate all of the creative magic that the south west has to offer, and the Royal William Yard is the perfect space to host this. “We’re so grateful for the continued support from Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth Culture and of course Urban Splash for the opportunity to host Native Makers at the Royal William Yard. “Our ambition is to put Plymouth on the map for arts and culture and to improve graduate retention by showcasing the wealth of talent our local, designer-makers have to offer.” NM have also launched their ‘Native Nurture’ scheme for the summer event. Native Nurture is for new makers who have been trading for 1 year or less. Under the new scheme,

Judith and Martin living the dream There’s nothing more Plymouth couple Judith and Martin Soper enjoy than looking after their three grandchildren.

– thanks to KF Kitchens

The range of new appliances also includes a NEFF combination microwave and double oven featuring slide and hide shelves and warming drawer.

But their mid-terraced St Budeaux home needed more space, so they decided to extend upwards and outwards to give themselves the home of their dreams in readiness for Martin’s retirement from the Dockyard in a few years’ time.

One of Judith’s favourite features is the full length Artline pull out larder with a series of spacious shelves which provides a huge amount of storage space for jars, cans, packets and much more.

“We decided to have a loft extension to give us a total of four bedrooms and extend at the back of the house to provide a much bigger kitchen and dining area,” said Martin.

“I love my new larder,” said Judith. “Everything is instantly visible - no hunting around the back of cupboards looking for a long lost bottle of sauce,” she said.

Work began in the middle of last year and the couple soon got used to living in what had become something of a building site.

KF Kitchens team of fitters and trade specialists ensured that the whole installation was undertaken with the minimum of fuss.

Judith, who retired from her job as a teaching assistant three years ago, said: “We virtually lived out of our front room for the best part of six months and Martin even created a temporary kitchen in the lounge while all the work went on.”

“Their fitter Peter was brilliant,” said Judith. “He installed all the bedroom furniture and then moved on to the kitchen when the builders had finished the major works.

The loft extension created a brand new master bedroom overlooking the Tamar Valley and Judith wanted fitted bedroom furniture to complete the transformation. “I visited a number of showrooms and eventually found KF Kitchens who had an excellent display of fitted bedrooms,” she said.

with one of the kitchens on display in their incredible showroom and I knew that anything else would be second best.

“Simon from KF Kitchens could not have been more helpful and he designed the range of bespoke fitted wardrobes, along with bedside lockers and a matching door onto Martin’s walkin wardrobe.

“I was like a child in a sweet shop looking at all the amazing gadgets, appliances and finishing touches that KF Kitchens

“We were really pleased with the end result - but the best was yet to come,” said Judith. “I fell completely in love

have available,” she added.

Their previous kitchen had been small and cramped but the rear extension created a spacious 240 square foot kitchen-dining area.

She and Martin selected a stone grey gloss finish for all the cupboards, doors and kitchen units along with a quartz blanco stella worktop from Plymouthbased Mayflower Stone. A striking red splashback supplied by Armada Glass perfectly complements the cool grey colour scheme.

Nearly nine out of ten primary age children get the school of their choice Thousands of Plymouth primary children have found out which school they will be going to in September. The latest figures show that 97.32 per cent of city children (2095) were allocated one of their three preferences this year. 89.44 per cent received their first choice of school. 6.09 per cent of children received their second choice and 1.79 per cent their third choice. Just 2.68 per cent of children did not receive any of the schools they listed as a preference and so were allocated a place at the nearest school with a vacancy. This figure has improved from last year, only 82 children compared to 112 last year. Letters confirming school places for September 2016 were posted today. Those parents who filled out an online application form were emailed with their results. Parents then have two weeks to respond to the offer which can be done online. A total of 3077 applications were submitted for primary school places this year. That compares with 3045 last year, when the council was able to match 88.12 per cent of families with their first choice of primary school. Assistant director for Learning and Communities, Judith Harwood, said: “We know what a stressful time it can be when you find out which school your child has been allocated, so we work really hard to make sure we are able to match the majority of children with their first choice of school and to support families when this isn’t possible. “As a council we are determined to ensure parents and their children have choice over their education, so we are continuing to invest in our schools through expanding existing ones, encouraging the development of new schools where appropriate and helping to construct new school buildings. “We are currently building two permanent primary school expansions and a new three form entry primary and nursery academy all due to open in September 2016.” The city council has a statutory duty to provide enough school places across the city. Currently there are enough spaces within the city to accommodate everyone who has applied for a school place and there is a reasonable bank of surplus spaces (approximately six per cent). Judith continued: “Unfortunately, it is not always possible to offer your child a place in your preferred school. Any parent who is unhappy about the school place their child has been allocated can call our school admissions team on 01752 307166. “Lines are open between 11am and 3pm or email us primary.admissions@plymouth.gov.uk. “If we were unable to allocate to your first, second or third choice and offered you an alternative which you either need further information about or would like to know about other alternative options please contact us; we work with individual families to support them in finding the right school for their child.” Parents are also being reminded that for any school they ranked higher than the one allocated, their child will automatically be placed on a waiting list for that school and will be considered if a vacancy comes up between now and the start of the school year. Armed Forces weekend

The hugely successful Plymouth Armed Forces Day is returning in June as a transformed spectacular two day event - Armed Forces Weekend.

The Armed Forces Weekend will be introducing some brand new spectacles including; The Rifles Freedom of the City Parade led by The Band of The Rifles, 29 Commando Royal Artillery’s Feu de Joie and Devonport Field Gun’s Association Junior Field Gun Competition.

The award winning event - Silver in the Devon Tourism Awards and Bronze for the South West Tourism Awards - raises awareness, acknowledges and supports the Armed Forces community, celebrating the incredible contribution they make to the country.

They will join two of the main attractions; a thrilling air display and a Saturday evening entertainment concert.

Plymouth City Council is hosting this two day event in association with Babcock. Mike Whalley, Babcock director for warship support said: “Babcock International Group is very proud to support Armed Forces Weekend in Plymouth and is looking forward to once again joining with the local community to celebrate the occasion with serving personnel, veterans and their families.”

“Therefore, we decided to extend the event to a two day extravaganza, with a range of new features to entice the community to keep coming back and to celebrate how proud we are of Plymouth’s naval and military history.

Due to the huge appetite of the public for this annual event, which saw around 50,000 visitors take to The Hoe in 2015, it will now take place over two days with much more to see and do. This extravagant weekend will take place on Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26, providing a whole host of exciting entertainment, airshows, military displays and parades that will attract visitors from far and wide. The weekend will include an RAF and Allied Air Force Memorial Service as well as a Parade of Standards, Cadets and Veterans. A number of arena displays will feature during the weekend which will include Military Bands, a Field Gun Crew Competition, Cadets Programme and Combat Displays. A Bustling Veterans Village, Royal Navy Village, Army Village and RAF Village supported by the Royal Marines will be on show for the local community to experience.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said; “Since 2008, Armed Forces Day has gone from strength to strength, becoming more popular with the local community each year.

“Armed Forces Weekend continues to honour our service men and women and I personally would like to say a huge thank you to the Armed Forces community and look forward to celebrating the outstanding contribution the Forces make to our country. “This event is an incredible showcase for Plymouth and we are pleased to once again be working with such fantastic sponsors.” Commodore Ian Shipperley, Naval Base Commander, Devonport, added: “We are all really proud to be supporting Armed Forces Weekend this year. “It is an ideal opportunity for the local community across the South West to show the depth of support for our military personnel, veterans and their families. This will be the second year I have attended in Plymouth and I am looking forward to what I am sure will be a wonderful day.” For more information visit the website at www.plymoutharmedforcesday.co.uk.

Rising music star recognised at college awards

A musical star in the making has been recognised by City College Plymouth at the Student of the Term awards.

of recording and production. Esther’s compositions and performances show a real rising star in the making and I expect great things for her musical career.”

Esther Cole, 17, from Peverell is studying music at the College and had impressed both her lecturers and fellow students with her broad range of musical talents.

The Student of the Term scheme recognises and rewards students who are making a positive contribution to their course, the college or the local community - over and above what is expected.

Her voice will also be familiar to many people in Plymouth from her community radio show and acoustic performances in venues across the city.

There is an overall winner for each of the college’s curriculum areas, and these are all put forward for three further, special awards: the Students’ Union Award, the Governor’s Award and the Principal’s Award.

Mark Trewin, director of Creative, Cultural & Digital Industries, said: “It is so rare to find a young performer who is so accomplished across a broad musical spectrum, as well as on the technical side

On receiving her award, Esther said: “There are so many talented people on my course, so I was

really surprised to be recognised. I love performing and being able to explore the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff too.” Esther received a certificate and a prize at the ceremony held in the College’s PL1 Restaurant. The event was attended by the Student of the Term winners and their families, as well as their nominating tutors, senior members of college staff and college Governors. Student rides rollercoaster to success

A young theme park enthusiast mixed business with pleasure when he got a tour of two of the country’s most popular attractions as part of a work experience trip for his college business course. Isaac Elwood, 16, from Devonport, who is studying for a Diploma in Business at City College Plymouth, was given a tour of Alton Towers Resort and Thorpe Park after writing to the bosses at Merlin Entertainments to tell them about his dream of becoming a theme park manager. Isaac said: “I’ve always loved visiting theme parks - we used to go to loads around the world on family holidays - so from when I was quite young, I knew that I wanted to be a theme park manager.

resources to the technicians.

“I was given a tour and got an eagle’s eye view of how the park operates. Everyone was so friendly and answered my endless questions. They think I’ve got real potential and that’s really inspired me to go for it. I really appreciate the time and effort they spent on me because they have a busy schedule.

A young student who came to Plymouth from Africa has been honoured at City College Plymouth’s Student of the Term awards. Bryan Nahimana, 18, is originally from Burundi, but now lives in Central Plymouth. He has been studying English at the college and really impressed his lecturers with how quickly he has adapted to life in the UK.

“Of course, I also got to go on some of the rides too. There’s too many to choose a favourite, but I love Nemesis because it still gives me a thrill every time I ride it!”

Teresa Gardner, Director of Business, Hospitality Care and Science, said: “Bryan had to adapt to life in Plymouth very quickly, and he did so with politeness, kindness, good humour and great patience. He has also thrown himself into the local community, participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award and undertaking a ten mile hike along the South West Coast Path in the pouring rain!”

Isaac’s initiative taking and determination in organising his trip to the theme parks was recognised by his lecturers when the college awarded him the Student of the Term award.

“When I wrote to the guys at Merlin, I didn’t know if they’d even get back to me; so when they invited me for a tour, I couldn’t believe it! I’d visited both Alton Towers and Thorpe Park before, but this was something special.”

Teresa Gardner, faculty director for Business, Hospitality, Care and Science, said: “We encourage our students to be resourceful and create their own opportunities. Isaac now knows exactly what he needs to do to achieve his dream job and it has given him a great focus.

Isaac was given special access to both parks, speaking to the directors of the various teams who keep the parks running, from the director of human

Snowdrop Appeal’s fund-raising boost negligence department at Wolferstans Solicitors, holds the position of charities secretary and after presenting three potential charities to the committee, the Charity of the Year has been nominated as the Jasmine and Central Delivery Suite Snowdrop Appeal.

The Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division is a network of young legal professionals who offer support to each other and promote the values and benefits of the legal profession in the city. Part of their work involves fundraising and they have announced that they will support the Snowdrop Appeal as their Charity of the Year in 2016. The committee is chaired by Kyle Klesniks, a paralegal in the employment team at Wolferstans Solicitors. Kyle coordinates the running of the Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division alongside the secretary of the committee, Chloe Hamblin, trainee solicitor at Curtis Whiteford Crocker and 12 other legal professionals across the city.

Kyle Klesniks said: “I have been involved with the Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division for several years and I am lucky to be leading such a reliable and enthusiastic group. We have a several events coming this year and I am confident that we will raise a lot of much needed funds and awareness for such a valuable cause.”

Their initial aim was to raise £1,000 which rapidly became a £100,000 target towards setting up a new specialist unit for bereaved parents of still birth, miscarriage and early baby loss at Derriford Hospital, situated away from the busy maternity area to help in easing the trauma and loss they will experience in such tragic times. They have developed the appeal and provide specialist support for families to help them through their bereavement and loss with experienced specialised staff and now aim to reach £300,000.

A significant part of the work conducted by the committee is to source sponsorship opportunities and to fundraise for their chosen Charity of the Year.

Work starts on Mount Batten Tower

• No Job Too Small

Work has started on Plymouth’s historic Mount Batten Tower which could help the building attract more visitors.

said: “This is an historic building and needs to be handled with care. Installing new rails means we have to lift some fairly heavy granite flagstones and we need to be mindful that it is a scheduled monument.”

• Time Served Tradesman With 20 Years Experience

Contractors will be putting up scaffolding around the tower ahead of a programme of work which will see a new rail or balustrade installed around the top of the tower as well as handrails on the outside staircase.

The work programme had to be cleared by Historic England to make sure it does not compromise the structure.

• Wallpaper Hanging

The 400-year-old tower will be made more watertight with new drainage installed and stonework repointed.

• Free Estimates

Earlier this year the Council opened up the tower to the public to get their thoughts and ideas of what they would like to see at the tower.

The Council also commissioned consultants Levitate to put together a feasibility study to see how the tower can be opened up and the history of the headland better celebrated. From next week contractors Westcountry Stonemasons will be erecting scaffolding around the tower for the project which is likely to take around six months. Other aspects of the project involve removing bitumen from around the tower, tidying up the interior and rewiring. The historic tower takes its name from Captain William Batten, a commander in Cromwell’s Parliamentarian navy. It was built during the Commonwealth period and held up to 10 guns on the upper floor to protect the eastern side of the Plymouth estuary and defend the entrance to Cattewater and Sutton Harbour. From 1913 the headland was used as an airbase by the Royal Navy and then the Royal Air Force. Plymouth City Council secured £155,000 for improvements to the tower including £84,000 from Historic England, £50,000 from the Coastal Revival Fund.

£300,000 donation keeps St Luke’s crisis team nurses on the roads Hundreds of families in Devon will continue to receive specialist care at home for loved ones at the end of their lives thanks to a six figure donation to St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. The hard-working local hospice charity has just received a £300,000 gift from the Garfield Weston Foundation to part-fund their crisis team for the next two years. The money will support the St Luke’s crisis team who work in partnership with local health providers to support families at home and prevent unnecessary or emergency hospital stays. Gold Dust Appeal hits £30,000

Derriford’s Gold Dust Appeal has reached an important milestone in its £100,000 fund raising campaign.

The Gold Dust Appeal aims to raise the six figure to create bright, exciting and welcoming wards for local children and young people at Derriford Hospital. The appeal has now reached £30,000 - almost a third of the way towards the total. Emma Cronin, Gold Dust fundraising manager, said: “We want to be able to care for children in a stimulating and sensitive environment with bright and spacious surroundings, which will provide greater comfort and privacy for children and their families. “A big thank you to everyone who has

helped us so far – organisations and individuals alike. Momentum is growing now and, although we still have a long way to go to reach £100,000, we have some fantastic events coming up for everyone to get involved in and we always welcome new ideas and support. Let’s reach our target to transform Derriford’s children’s wards.” Mason Vosper, aged five, joined Anita Dykes, Matron for Paediatrics, to put stickers on the wall chart and was dressed as a super hero. Mason is the first to sign up the appeal’s children’s fun run. More details to follow soon. For more information about the Gold Dust Appeal and how to get involved visit www. plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/golddust or like the Gold Dust page on Facebook.

This is done by providing a 72-hour window of specialist care to stabilise symptoms or facilitate prompt discharge from hospital. In 2015, the St Luke’s Crisis Team supported 332 people with end of life conditions to stay at home with their families. They also supported carers and loved ones who may be under immense pressure to respond to a rapidly changing situation. Maggie Draper, head of community care at St

Food waste? It’s a valuable resource!

People living in Plymouth or Exeter, unlike residents in the rest of the Devon, have no access to a household food waste collection service. Householders in the South Hams were the first to be offered this facility in 2002. If food waste recycling operated here in Plymouth, householders would be able to keep their brown bins or black bags free from nearly all the messy, smelly bits of rubbish.

By food waste I’m not just talking about good food that gets left too long, I mean banana 12

skins, the tough leaves of a pineapple, tea bags and coffee grounds, meat and fish bones and other inedible parts; these items are not attractive but they’re still full of nutrients and should be dealt with responsibly.

Food waste is what attracts seagulls and foxes, and we’ve all seen the consequences: rubbish bags torn open so that their contents are scattered across pavements and back lanes. A separate collection would mean that householders could securely lock food waste away in special bins which could then be collected and taken each week, for example, to the Anaerobic Digester (AD) at Langage Farm, just outside Plymouth.

The Plymouth Shopper

Story by Pat Bushell of Transition Plymouth You probably know the ice cream that Langage produces, but are you aware that this is a great example of the ecologically responsible ‘circular economy’? The AD unit at Langage creates electricity to run the farm as well as producing a rich fertiliser that goes back onto the fields. This results in lusher grass growth, eaten by the cows whose milk is then made into the ice cream we know. With this system all the goodness, the nutrients in the food waste, are recycled back into the food chain. In the

circular economy everything is recycled and there is no waste. This is why some of us got together in 2014 as Plymouth Food Waste Partnership, with the intention of changing the way food waste is dealt with in the city. The group expanded to include people from commercial organisations, the city council and community groups in Plymouth, as well as individuals who were simply concerned about this issue. We have been awarded a lottery grant to produce a feasibility study and to hold awareness raising workshops in schools, and have also been chosen as one of the runners-up in the Sainsbury’s Waste Less,

Save More initiative this year.

So what happens to food waste now? Unsorted waste collected by the City Council all goes to the Energy from Waste plant (EfW), known locally as the Devonport Incinerator. This plant makes electricity, but leaves behind ash that needs to be disposed of. Apart from the recycling, all of Plymouth’s waste now ends up there. It’s an example of the old linear economy, that is: resources are used up creating rubbish which then needs to be disposed of. Doesn’t the circular economy make more sense? We think so. The success for the Stoke Village Spring Fair held at Blockhouse Park has given encouragement for an even bigger Summer event.

Pension Wise advice Advice Plymouth is the partner organisation of four charities in Plymouth; Age UK Plymouth, Routeways, Plymouth Guild and Citizens Advice Plymouth. Citizens Advice Plymouth runs the Pension Wise service for a large proportion of Devon and is a vital service for many. It is widely agreed that pensions are confusing. From the terminology to the vast amount of potential avenues available; there are lots of obstacles between you and a clear, well-informed decision. The government recognised this and in response created Pension Wise. Pension Wise is a free, impartial government service that helps people approaching retirement to go through their options so they can make informed decisions about their pension pot. James Smith* accessed the Pension Wise service in November. Mr. Smith contacted his local service after seeing the national advertisement on TV and felt that it was time he understood his pension options more clearly. He made an appointment with Citizens Advice Plymouth and felt that “as a first step to looking forward it was very good.” A Pension Wise appointment will help you go through your options so you can make confident decisions that are best for you and your family. The appointment is usually 45 minutes long and is tailored to the individual, taking into account the value of their pension pot and their plans for retirement. Be aware that an appointment is not regulated financial advice – it provides impartial guidance and does not recommend products or providers. The service is there to help everyone understand what it’s all about

By Anna Salisbury of Advice Plymouth and then this enables the individual to clearly look into their options. The dedicated team at Citizens Advice Plymouth offer face to face appointments at any of these locations: Plymouth, Exeter, Totnes, Paignton, Torquay, Dawlish, Teignmouth and Newton abbot. Citizens Advice was chosen by HM Treasury to work on Pension Wise due to their expertise at helping people understand their circumstances and the next steps available to them. Mr. Smith said of the service “It was an ideal place to go, with plenty of stuff to look into.” You can get information and guidance online at www.pensionwise.gov.uk. You can also book an appointment with a guidance specialist on the phone or faceto-face. A pension wise appointment may help you if you: • are approaching retirement or are 50 or over • have a defined contribution pension • are thinking of accessing your pension • have not had a guidance appointment before Call 01752 502695 to book an appointment. *An alternative name has been used for the client’s privacy and protection.

Should we stay in or come out?

That’s the question we will all be answering as (and if) we vote in the EU referendum on June 23 as to whether the UK remains in the European Union. In the meantime we will all no doubt receive literature though our doors, have the opportunity to watch TV presentations and review the posts of Facebook friends who have strong views on the subject. These will mainly seek to argue strongly one way or the other and provide many reasons why their view is justified and seek to persuade us to vote as they recommend. I am not going to use this column to seek to sway you one way or the other but I will attempt to give you an honest and researched view of whether it is really best for the UK to stay in or come out of the European Union. Here it is…are you ready?…..the answer is… “no one really knows”! Much as people will try to convince you otherwise, for me this is the true position. The world is now so complex and so many matters are interlinked with others that it is impossible to accurately predict the effect of such an action on an individual country, European or even global stage. Certainly the financial world is very complex. The global economy is still extremely unbalanced and seemingly becoming more

so as interacting weaknesses continue to amplify each other. The goals of balanced growth, balanced economic policies and a safe financial system still elude us.

Whether we stay in or come out of the European Union, many of the main problem issues will remain in our economy. We spend more than we earn, both as a country and indeed (for many people) as individuals. Such economics are not sustainable in the long run both on a macro (national) or micro (individual) level. Whatever the outcome we will need to get our own books balanced. As a country the effects of this situation are now being manifested in cuts in many public services and benefits. Many at the poorer end of our society seem to be suffering disproportionately more than those who are better off financially. As individuals we are being forced to look at our own household budgets more carefully to work out those items of expenditure we really have to make and then cutting out some of the more “luxury” items, which we may not now be able to afford. Some still have the legacy of high levels of debt to deal with. Low interest rates are possibly keeping the full manifestation of this problem subdued but this could change if the much predicted interest rate rise occurs, even at a small level. If you are struggling with unmanageable debt and require assistance, then seek independent,

City College is one of only a few colleges to buck the national trend by being awarded a ‘Good’ rating. The annual report by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills emphasises just how challenging it is to achieve a good outcome at inspection. It is, therefore, all the more impressive that Ofsted has praised the College for providing “good education and training” to their students. As the premier FE college in Plymouth, City College has 13,000 students studying a range of vocational qualifications, part-time courses, university-level Foundation Degrees and higher education courses, Apprenticeships and other work-based learning options. Inspectors spoke to students, staff, parents and employers to get a clear overview of the breadth, depth and quality of what the college offers. The results show that the college scored highly across the board, with their student satisfaction, teaching, courses, Apprenticeship programmes, facilities, 14

organisations. They use these well to develop a curriculum that reflects the employment priorities of the city.”

The college’s award-winning Apprenticeship programme was also highlighted, with inspectors reporting that apprentices “make very good progress, with a higher proportion than the national average completing their programmes successfully” and that they receive “particularly good advice and guidance” to “match them well to training opportunities offered by employers”.

Phil Davies continued: “We are incredibly fortunate in Plymouth. We have a considerable number of employers in the city who recognise the advantages of engaging in a meaningful dialogue with their local college about their future workforce and the development of their skills base. They ensure that the courses we run are employer-led, that they support economic development and that they are aligned to the priorities of the city and wider region. The result is that we have highlyskilled students who leave us work-ready.

Phil Davies, principal and chief executive of City College, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have maintained our status as a ‘Good’ college with outstanding features. I am extremely proud of the team at the College, our students and employer partners for helping us to achieve this result. Students are happy to study here and the report is full of praise for the work we do. We can all - students, staff and alumni - be proud of the City’s College.” The “experience and expertise” of the college’s Board of Governors and Senior Leadership team was praised by inspectors who noted that: “Leaders have developed extensive links and partnerships with employers and employer

professional and confidential help.

“We are fiercely ambitious for the College, the City and the region. This latest report is not just good news for the college, but also great news for Plymouth. Maintaining our status as a ‘good’ college is an irrefutable quality mark for our students, businesses and local community who can have real confidence in their city’s FE College and the services we provide. “We will continue to build on our successes and further develop our provision to the benefit of our students, employers, community and the city’s economy.”

meets every month to allocate capital funding or authorise more detailed work to various projects. As a result the council will formally allocate £2,345,000 from its Community Infrastructure Levy to projects which are making a difference to the lives of people in the city.

The CIL is a fund made up of contributions developers have made to counter the effect of development. This financial contribution is then distributed according to an agreed list which can range from transport and leisure facilities to open spaces. • £850,000 to support improvements to public spaces around the city centre including supporting businesses through a shop front improvement scheme and redesigning outside public areas around the new-look Bretonside leisure complex. • £300,000 to the new-look Central Library which opened last month and £245,000 allocated to the European Marine Site (which is the Plymouth Sound and its estuaries) to create an action plan detailing key projects needed to protect the site within the context of a growing city. • £950,000 contribution to support the ongoing regeneration of North Prospect. The contribution is to bridge a financial gap which is threatening PCH’s ability to deliver this massive transformation. It will help pay for work associated with Phase 5 of the redevelopment programme and could entail providing or improving open spaces and play areas, traffic calming and parking facilities, installing main sewers to treatment plants as well as flood prevention measures. The council is to also buy a specific property in the city centre as an investment opportunity. The council is currently the freeholder of the property and the acquisition will lead to a good rental income. The sale negotiations are currently under way so the council is not in a position to say which property it is considering. The board has also supported a plan for a new national standard allweather hockey pitch at the College of St Mark and St John. The council has indicated it is prepared to support the college’s bid for funding and is likely to make a contribution once it has considered a more detailed business case.

Road testing a UK first in Plymouth Recent studies show that 76% of adults in the UK now own a smart phone, suggesting that we are hurtling towards a digital revolution that some of us are struggling to keep up with, writes Karen Pilkington.

However, for some digital enthusiasts, smart is only smart if it allows everyone to be part of it, regardless of whether they find technology daunting or liberating. These champions of inclusion and community are actively pursuing new ways of using technology to involve everyone, and here in Plymouth we are lucky enough to have been chosen as a pilot city for an exciting new concept that could bring us closer together and make a positive change in our communities. Priya Prakash, founder of Design 4 Social Change is a keen cyclist living in South London. She had a run in, (should that be cycle in?) with the mother of all potholes – a tale that many in Plymouth will identify with – yet despite numerous attempts to highlight the issue with her local council, fixing the problem proved frustratingly slow. Not being the type to moan without action, Priya’s company developed Changify, the only software in the UK that allows local residents to report and suggest priority issues for their area, and receive feedback from other app users on their ideas. And her action has just won a lucrative award for digital innovation. Winning Innovate UK’s IC tomorrow Connected Cities innovation contest has meant that Design 4 Social Change have been awarded funding for the development and trial of the Changify Smarter Streets prototype enabling them to launch and run a pilot programme right here in Plymouth, which could change the way that highways issues are managed.

Whether you drive, walk, run, cycle, push prams, ride mobility scooters, walk dogs or use a wheelchair, the platform gives users the ability not just to take photos, but also to comment and vote on the issues that you view as most relevant or pressing. A local sharing platform is created whereby you can easily connect with other users as much or as little as you like, including regular invitations to local meetings to meet face to face over a coffee or a pint to take the issues to the next level.

Ideally Changify Smarter Streets would work with 10 local hubs and groups of 20 volunteers and has started using Rockets n Rascals on the Barbican. Plymouth University, who are research partners on the Smarter Streets pilot, has expressed its delight that the city has been chosen for such a unique pilot scheme. Dr Katharine Willis, associate professor in the School of Architecture, Design and the Environment, and coordinator of the smart cities working group, is excited to work with Changify on testing the benefits for the city of smart technology that is accessible for ordinary citizens.

“Plymouth has the opportunity to harness technology for its own social benefit in a way that allows its citizens to inhabit, influence and make sense of their city‚“ said Dr Willis. “Smarter Streets is a great way to start to participate in alternative visions for the city and we are looking forward to seeing how volunteers join in. “Together we can create a city that is not just trying to keep up with technological giants like San Francisco, New York or London, but is everyday smart involving everyone in the benefits that digital technology can bring. “The university wants to work locally and so this pilot is part of our research study on how we can take technology, people and some ways we can change our city and bring them together to improve the experience of living here. If technology cannot achieve that, then it is not smart.” So if you are a road user with something to say, or a local business that would be happy to be a venue to meet, then please get involved by visiting www.changify. org/smarterstreets and prove to the rest of the UK that Plymouth truly is a smart place to live. College is Fairtrade winner

City College Plymouth has won two awards at the 2016 South West Fairtrade Business Awards.

The college won a gold award in the Best Fairtrade university or college category for the third year in a row and was recognised as the overall winner in their category. General Manager for the college’s catering supplier Aramark, Mark Jones, also received a silver award in the Best Fairtrade Advocate category. Laura Parry, sustainability officer at City College Plymouth, said: “We are delighted that the college has been recognised for the work they do promoting Fairtrade. It was also wonderful for Mark to be recognised for the second year running. We are continually looking to improve our provision of Fairtrade products and we actively raise awareness of Fairtrade to both staff and students within the College and to the local community.” The ceremony, held at the At-Bristol Science Centre, was the culmination of

March’s Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations in the region - which included City College’s Fairtrade Brunch organised and hosted by students studying at the college. The brunch forms part of the ‘Sit Down for Breakfast, Stand Up for Farmers’ campaign, highlighting the fact that many farmers in developing countries provide food for us, but don’t get paid enough to feed their own families - an injustice Fairtrade seeks to redress.

THE CHRIS COLE

Experience

Personal conviction, belief and democracy While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.

according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Such is the reality of the spiritual journey. Prayer is often defined as a relational process of communication between us and God. So for many of us “It makes a difference to us.”

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water. He came closer still and called out,

A brief examination of the life of Jesus Christ will reveal that His life, authority and power was undergirded through communication with His Father in heaven. So at least from His perspective prayer worked/works.

“Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The most significant referendum vote for a generation is taking place on June 23rd whether to exit or stay in the European Union. Just before this momentous vote we have local votes on May 5th which impact on our lives locally.

The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.“ The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” To this, the young man replied,

The vote in June is going to be a major nation changing decision which by definition is going to impact on us all with massive consequences at least in the short term, whether we like it or not. It seems that the most important issue is economic and control of our borders, but I think it may have deeper reverberations upon us all. This is a complicated issue.

“The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.” Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!” The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.” This age old story is applicable when individuals are being challenged by others about the actions and choices they make which may seem hopeless or absurd. ‘What’s the point?’ a person will say to the individual with a strong conviction and world view doing something that seems pointless.

So what is the point of all this? I think there is a variation on this story about starfish when it comes to comparing it to voting in a democratic society. During the last national elections there was an initiative called ‘Show Up’ which encouraged people of whatever political persuasion, to at least show up and vote. So all of us should at list familiarise ourselves with the issues at hand.

My head and heart are in conflict over this massive decision of this referendum in terms of how to vote and therefore in examining the issues I will engage in prayer. I Many people are motivated in life through personal conviction. And a conviction of will pray for our leaders in the political sphere as they strive to put forward the issues how people see life is part of living within our liberal democracies. Free will and free of the referendum. Also, we are encouraged to pray for those in authority because choice and acting responsibly for the good within our common humanity are part of they are empowered through our election of them into political office, to make the maturing process as human beings. these political strategies work. Regardless of the outcome, at least in conscience, I will know that from my faith As a Christian, I have a belief Chris Cole, is the founder of Cross Rhythms charity. He is also a Fellow perspective I was engaged in in the power of prayer. I have the process of contributing to of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). History in the spotlight on Local Studies Day Plymouth’s annual Local Studies Day will take place on Saturday May 7 with a day of presentations that celebrate the history of Plymouth. The event, which will kickstart this year’s History Festival, will be held at the Robbins Conference Centre from 9am to 4.30pm. It will also include a series of small displays highlighting current projects and activities from local history societies. A packed schedule for the day includes seven different presentations from local history experts. The University of Exeter’s Derek Gore will look at new evidence for Vikings in the South West. Not a lot of people know that Plymouth’s Cattewater Wreck was the UK’s first protected wreck – the Mary Rose actually came second! Martin Read from Plymouth University will explain more about Plymouth’s own Tudor ship, highlighting the outcomes of new research and scientific analysis. Playwright John Nash and actors from the Barbican Theatre will discuss how performance can help people understand history, drawing on their experience of bringing the city’s historic Elizabethan House to life last year with their production of ‘The Spice Box’. Taxation is very topical at the moment and well-known Devon historian Todd Grey will remind attendees that taxes were just as popular in the period 1550-1640! 2016 sees the continuing centenary of World War I and the 75th anniversary of the Blitz so, fittingly, Dr Ian Hodgins from the Ford Park Cemetery Trust will talk about the ‘Victors and Victims of War’. The day will round off with a step back to into the ‘Plymouth Beats’ of the 1950s courtesy of the South West Film and Television Archive and South West Image Bank, plus updates on future projects from the Council’s libraries and arts and heritage services. Tickets for Local Studies Day are £12, with an optional buffet lunch available for an extra £10. Bookings can be made online or by calling the Museum and Art Gallery on 01752 304774. The closing dates are April 29 for those who wish to book with lunch and May 6 for admission only. Local Studies Day is jointly organised by Plymouth City Council and the Old Plymouth Society, with the support of Plymouth University’s Peninsula Arts.

Work of talented quilters on display The artistic skills of a group of dedicated quilters will be on show at Mount Gould Methodist Church in May.

The group, which is called the Pilgrim Patchers, was started by Pat King and meets every Monday morning at the church between 10am and 12 noon.

“Seven years later the group is still going strong and meets on the second Monday of the month at Plymouth Highbury Trust from 7pm to 9pm.” Pat then decided that there was a need for a daytime group and Pilgrim Patchers was formed and they have met at Mount Gould

Methodist Church for the last three years. Pat later started the Goulden Girl Stitchers to meet the needs of absolute beginners and this group meets every other Thursday from 10am to 1pm. “We have made a Christmas quilt and a Remembrance Day quilt for the church and this year will be the first show at the church.” A number of other craft groups meet at Mount Gould Methodist Church on a weekly basis, including a cardcraft group which meets on Tuesdays and a group called Cro/Knit Stars who enjoy crocheting and knitting on a Thursday morning. The show will be held on May 14 in Mount Gould Church Hall from 10am and will feature the work of the Pilgrim Patchers, Goulden Girls and the other craft groups. There will also be a sales table and goodies from a local trader. Admission is £2 with proceeds going to church funds and the Plymouth Branch of SSAFA. Eggbuckland trio cook their way to chef team title Eggbuckland Community College are the overall winners of City College Plymouth’s annual Young Chef Team Challenge.

The winning team, Alys Doe, Daniel Boucher and Callum Walker, impressed the judges with their innovative and well-presented dishes.

Drawing fierce competition from schools across Plymouth, the competition asked teams of three student to design a three course menu that was suitable for top athletes, Plymouth Raiders’ players, Duane Bailey and Michael Vigor.

Sam Selby, youth liaison officer at the college, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for any budding chefs to experience working in a real life restaurant environment.

The dishes had to reflect the healthy, high energy requirements of Raiders’ athletes diets, as well as fitting to the students’ personal tastes and being pleasing to the eye. The teams were given three core ingredients - salmon, pork and pineapple - to base their culinary creations on. Both Duane and Michael were on hand to taste the food and announced Eggbuckland as the winners at the College’s PL1 Restaurant. Helping the Raiders’ players to judge this year’s competition was City College Plymouth’s Hospitality and Catering Academy Manager, Chaz Talbot.

“We’re really excited to be working with local schools, the fantastic judges and Plymouth Raiders again for this annual event. Each year the standards rise and the young chefs produce high quality food, showing plenty of culinary skills. Congratulations to Eggbuckland Community College for a well-deserved win.” Prizes were also awarded to the team that produced the best individual course: the best starter was awarded to Devonport High School for Boys, the best main went to Lipson Academy B Team and the best dessert went to Lipson Academy A Team. The other schools competing this year included Devonport High School for Girls and Lipson Academy.

EU Referendum June 23 time to make up your mind

#EUreferendum 23rd June 2016 TIME TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND!

Up until recently, many of us may have considered we could determine membership of the European Union with a penalty shoot out - at least we thought we would get a better public response this way, writes Karen Pilkington.

WANT TO KNOW THE FACTS? Question time style Debate Independently and unbiasedly chaired by University of Plymouth Students’ Union and 38 Degrees members from Plymouth

However in just the last few weeks, indifference has given way to much more consideration, and it seems that the great British public are intending to take the matter seriously.

WEDS 18TH MAY | 6:30PM RolanD levinsky lectuRe theatRe, Plymouth univeRsity

For many of us, we find ourselves in a situation where we urgently need to know more to be able to make an informed decision on how to vote on June 23.

Congratulations to Teresa Tyler-Smith who was the winner of the Zuzimo

competition which appeared

in our March edition. She won dinner for two.

For this reason, a group of 38 Degrees members in Plymouth, in collaboration with the University of Plymouth Students’ Union have organised a debate, whereby local people can

put their questions to a panel with regard to answering the referendum question, “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?”. 38 Degrees is a not for profit political activism organisation that campaigns on a wide range of issues, bringing together ordinary people in the UK to work together, independent of any political party. The debate will be strictly impartially chaired to ensure that local voters can be given facts to help them make their own decision. Questions are being asked for by those who register for the event to be put to the speakers in a Question Time Style debate. The debate will be held in the Roland Levinsky Lecture Theatre in Plymouth University on Wednesday 18th May at 6.30pm. Tickets are free, but need to be pre ordered, either via the online ticketing service eventbrite, or by

contacting the Student Union directly. There will be three speakers on each side chosen from the Vote Leave Campaign, Stronger In Campaign and the Green Party. Speakers will include a mix of political persuasions on both sides as, according to the Daily Telegraph, “Public opinion toward the EU cuts across traditional divides, disconnecting the established parties and their voters”. Simply put, this is not a right/left issue. They will answer questions put to them by members of the audience. Questions are welcomed on the 38 Degrees Plymouth Facebook site, Facebook. com/38degreesPlymouth; by emailing info@ upsu.com or by phoning the Students Union on 01752 588372 and leaving an answer phone message. Tickets can also be requested using the UPSU phone number or email address or via the eventbrite link j.mp/eu-referendum-debate.

Devon Chamber of Commerce responds to business calls for clearer information ahead of referendum Devon Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an event on May 13 at the Moorland Garden Hotel to provide clear, factual information from both sides of the EU debate, following results from its recent Quarterly Economic Survey poll where 58 per cent of businesses said they would be interested in attending an event to hear from both sides.

With the EU referendum due to take place on June 23, Devon Chamber of Commerce has surveyed businesses in the county to understand current views on where businesses sit on the EU debate.

factual information from both sides of the EU debate.

Despite a majority expressing the need for further information more than half of businesses (66%) believe that leaving the EU could pose a risk to the UK economy.

It runs from 8.30am to 10am on May 13 at the Moorland Garden Hotel to hear from the speakers present and pose questions to the panel to help provide clearer information on the impact that the EU referendum could have on the UK’s economy.

Speakers at the event will include representatives from the Stronger In Europe, Vote Leave and Open Europe campaigns, with a focus on sharing clear,

Let’s work it out in Efford

A recent study conducted by University College London Department of Epidemiology and Public Health posed the question, does the phrase ‘bored to death’ have any basis?

The study concluded that those who report being bored are more likely to die younger than those who are not bored. It also stated that boredom is almost certainly a proxy for other risk factors and could be a trigger for harmful behaviours such as excessive drinking, smoking, taking drugs and low self esteem. This is not surprising to anyone who has experienced painful periods of not being able to find meaningful work, and is just the reason behind a new initiative in Efford. “Let’s work it out” is an aptly named drop in session run every Monday from 2pm to 5pm in the Efford Youth & Community Centre on Blandford Road. Organised by volunteer, Becky Turner, it offers a friendly atmosphere, free tea and coffee, and childcare to those looking for stimulus in the afternoon. There is access to four laptops Becky Turner owned by the centre, and, with free wifi, participants can bring their own devices along and get support in job searching, writing cv’s, online shopping, and just enjoying the feeling of becoming more proficient and competent using today’s technology. Becky also volunteers at a similar club run by Shekinah,

and is grateful for the support of Shekinah’s drop- in centre manager Nabs Mirza, to help her create the same supportive atmosphere at the Efford centre. “The centre is owned by Plymouth City Council and there is youth work on most evenings, explained Becky. “However, during the day, there is little happening in the area for young adults, those with more complex needs, the unemployed, and older people, especially since the closure of the Heart of Efford Community Partnership. “Not having enough to do during the day can feel really isolating so its been fantastic that Plymouth City Council have allowed us the use of the building on a Monday afternoon. “The building is purpose built with a great kitchen, and lovely inside. It could offer so much to the local community although even locals are often unsure of sharing time and expertise to help us all make the most out where to find it. of life. “We want to ensure that those “The free childcare offered by Noah’s Ark Efford for those living in the area, as well attending sessions is another example of a local business as others travelling in from helping those in the community find their feet.” outside, can get to benefit from Becky continued: “We have support from lots of other its use. organisations as well, so this is a real collaborative effort. “ When my husband and I Barnardos send us a link worker, Alison Harrison to help; moved to Efford, we were so we have a couple of volunteers who work with I-grow Care pleased to see children playing and Support, myself and Vicky Kemp; a member of Efford outside. Celebrating success of Grow, Share, Cook

Tami Skelton, nutritionist and director of Food is Fun, said: “It has been an amazing year working with the families and seeing the difference that Grow, Share Cook has made to people’s lives. The people that have taken part in the cooking sessions with us have become much more confident through having the access to more fresh vegetables by receiving free veg bags, and also having the knowledge of how to cook them.

A celebration event has taken place to mark one year of volunteer cookery sessions with residents.

The Grow, Share Cook sessions up at Plumer House, the headquarters for Plymouth Community Homes, led by Tami Skelton from Food is Fun, have now been taking place for a year as part of the Our Plymouth volunteer initiative.

“They have also been sharing their recipes and passing on their experience and knowledge to their families – it’s all about teaching people valuable life skills.”

The aim of Grow, Share, Cook, is to mobilise volunteers to grow more fresh fruit and vegetables, the development of community gardens and the distribution of the food to those in need, as well as healthy cookery sessions.

Zoe Nile from Plymouth Community Homes said: “Our Plymouth has created a renewed love of home cooking and healthy eating. Grow, Share Cook has enabled our residents to discover new skills in the kitchen, through PCH hosted cooking sessions, cooking healthy meals. Plymouth Energy Community has provided a great help in reducing energy bills keeping homes warm for less. Our partnerships have ensured a true sense of wellbeing has been achieved across the city.”

Since Grow, Share, Cook and Our Plymouth were launched

23,360 meals have been given to 1,611 people;
85% of participants say they now have a healthier diet; 89% of participants say that Grow, Share, Cook has helped improve their cooking skills;
103 families have been receiving free fortnightly fruit and veg boxes and
216 pots and pans have been donated in the pots and pans amnesty. Our Plymouth is based on the Cities of Service volunteer model and Plymouth is one of seven cities in the UK to be selected to take part. Cities of Service is based on an American volunteer scheme initiated by the former Mayor Bloomberg and has been adapted for the UK by the Cabinet Office and Nesta. Locally Our Plymouth is coordinated by Plymouth City Council working with a range of local partners.

The celebration event was aimed at Grow, Share, Cook volunteers and participants and was attended by around 30 residents plus Our Plymouth volunteers and representatives from a range of local partner agencies. There were people of all ages at the event, from preschool to pensioners, the youngest of which was three year old Lilly-Ruth Robertshaw.

Lilly attended the event with her mum Sarah

Robertshaw, who said: “We have really enjoyed going to Grow, Share, Cook and getting the veg boxes, and the kids have enjoyed exploring the different vegetables and recipes. Lilly’s favourite vegetable is carrots.”

Friends Gwen Wengradt and Val Sneddon, who both live in Ernesettle, also attended the event. Gwen said: “It’s been great coming to the Grow, Share Cook sessions and we have all learned a lot of new recipes as a result. I really like making the savoury cupcakes and have tried lots of different recipes.”

Darin Halifax, chief Cities of Service officer for Plymouth City Council, said: “We are really pleased with the

success of Grow, Share, Cook and the difference it has made to people’s lives so far. “The project has worked really well with the help of our partners Food Is Fun, Plymouth Community Homes, Tamar Grow Local, Plymouth City Council and most important of all, the volunteers and participants – we couldn’t have done it without them all.

“The aim of the celebration event was to say a big thank you to all those who have taken part. “The healthy cooking sessions at Plumer House have been really popular and people have taken their learning back home and shared it with their families.”

Rachael Forster for Tamar Grow Local said: “Our Plymouth has real potential to change lives through its holistic approach to tackling issues in the city such as fuel poverty and healthy eating. At the peak of the project we were delivering 100 veg bags a fortnight to front doors across the city, all sourced from Tamar Grow Local growing projects, Tamar Valley growers or English farms which is fantastic both for the recipients who get really fresh food and the small local growers who are benefitting from increased sales. “It’s been a project that has really brought people together and a project we have been really proud to be part of.”
