MAT FINISH! Sailors from HMS Raleigh have been digging out at Torpoint Nursery and Infant School to remove an area of soft-play matting.

A team of five sailors spent the day at the school lifting and shifting the redundant matting in an area of the playground, where a climbing frame was previously sited. Four of the group have recently completed their specialist training at HMS Raleigh and are about to embark on their first posting. Chef Will McGowan said: “It’s not easy digging up two layers of matting by hand, but we used a bit of team work, morale and communication. That’s what the Navy is all about.” During their visit the sailors were also able to meet some of the pupils and helped to plant two camellia bushes, donated to the school by Capt Bob Fancy, the Commanding Officer of HMS Raleigh, and his wife Sarah. Writer Joe Broadhead, who is part of HMS Raleigh’s Ship’s Company, said: “It’s good to help the local community and important to keep a positive relationship between HMS Raleigh and the people of Torpoint. There’s quite a few children at the school who have parents in the Royal Navy and also one member of the staff whose dad is currently

One of the Raleigh team helping youngsters to plant a Camelia bush serving at HMS Raleigh, so that’s a nice link too.” Head teacher Lis CarneyHaworth said: “Taking up the surface is such a big job and we were thrilled to have the volunteers to help with this task. I think they had earned a good lunch. “It will now be up to the children to develop this space in whatever way is most appropriate. It was lovely that the camellias, which

were the most wonderful gift from Capt and Mrs Fancy, arrived whilst the sailors were here as they could help the children to plant them near the new Wildlife Area. We are very appreciative of the links that we have with HMS Raleigh, which benefit both parties.”

Tyre-ing work for the two PTIs

Two super fit Marines aim to raise £1000 for charity

Two super-fit Royal Marines physical training instructors have marked the 350th anniversary of the birth of the Royal Marine Corps by flipping a tyre around HMS Raleigh. Sergeant (Sgt) Rob Garthland and Corporal (Cpl) Kris Foster set themselves a 350 themed test of strength and endurance for charity, which included the 3,500 metres tyre flip equating to two laps of the perimeter road around the Royal Navy training base in Cornwall. While this feat may have been hard enough for some, the two Royals warmed-up in the gym with a run, swim and row of 3,500 metres each and also completed a 350 metre rope climb. They finished their activities with a Spartan 350, seven sets of 50 bodyweight exercises. The Royal Marines started the challenge at 7.30am and finished just before 1 pm. They aim to raise £1000 for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charitable (RNRMC) trust, which supports today’s serving personnel, veterans and their families. Sgt Garthland said: “Individually we felt all the events are easily achievable, but we wanted to make it slightly harder for ourselves so decided to do everything in one day. The hardest thing was the swim. The most I’ve ever swam was 30 lengths and so 100 odd lengths is slightly out of my comfort zone. “When we were flipping the tyre we didn’t seem to be going anywhere and it was slow. Mentally that was draining and we finished it at about 12.30. So we were basically flipping a tyre for two hours, but thankfully the rest of the camp got involved to encourage us, which was great. Then it was the Spartan 350, which took about 15 minutes and then job done.” The two Royal Marines met at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone, in July 2001 when they both arrived for their initial training. Sgt Garthland, age 33, is currently serving at HMS Raleigh, where he is responsible for taking Royal Navy recruits through their 10-week initial naval training course. Cpl Foster, aged 32, is presently undergoing his Senior Command Course at Lympstone and is due to replace Sgt Garthland at HMS Raleigh in October. Donations can be made in support of the two Royal Marines’ efforts online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/350RMChallenge

New-style lettings agency launched A & A Lettings and Property Management is a new local letting agent covering Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula who are offering clients a new approach in the way landlords can chose their letting agent.

With more than 25 local years joint experience in the letting and estate agency market, Agnes Rice and Amanda Notman have decided to team up and launch A & A Lettings in order to serve people in the area with their expertise and fresh approach. Agnes said: “With increasingly busy lifestyles landlords can be safe in the knowledge that this new letting agent will have you at the forefront of their business with a personal and dedicated service at all times.” Previously Agnes and Amanda have worked side by side for several years in the industry and have decided to combine their skills and knowledge to form their unique letting agency believing there is a real gap in the market to be filled. Agnes has lived in Cornwall for more than 35 years and her experience and dedication to the letting industry of over 15 years is an attribute that can only be obtained through time, commitment and hard work. She has increasingly succeeded in growing and developing the lettings industry in the area and has built strong relationships with clients based on trust and transparency and knows how to deliver a seamless , professional service that can make people feel at ease and confident they they are in safe hands. Amanda grew up in Torpoint and has a wealth

of experience in the local property market having worked in estate agency for 14 years. In addition Amanda has gained many estate agent qualifications and is a member of the professional body for individuals working in residential property Lettings. Amanda’s professional and friendly personality means she has the skills and advice to offer clients looking to rent out their most important assets. This fresh new approach to the Lettings business means no shop front, no big salaries and no big overheads enabling them to offer a local, competitive and professional service to landlords and tenants alike. Over the years Agnes and Amanda have noticed a dramatic decline in the number of clients coming into offices, most people now like to browse the internet in the comfort of their own home and as a result on line letting agents are the fastest growing UK Lettings sector, transforming the way many landlords now think when using an agent. The Lettings market is extremely buoyant in the area with strong demands across all property types ranging from one bedroom flats to four bedroom detached properties. Amanda said: “We’re confident A & A Lettings will find you the right match not just the first match.” Agnes says this model is simple, cost effective and works, they will do pretty much everything that needs to be done during the course of the tenancy leaving landlords to get on with other important things in their lives.

A group of newly qualified sailors have raised over £300 for a charity committed to providing practical and emotional support to military personnel in hospitals, rehabilitation or recovery centres.

The Supply Chain Logisticians held a cake sale to mark the end of their 14 week specialist course at the Defence Maritime Logistics School (DMLS). They chose the military charity, Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS), as the beneficiary of their efforts after being told about the organisation by one of their instructors. The organisation’s Welfare Officers support patients from all three Services, wherever they serve, and also look after the families of military personnel and other entitled civilians. Logistician Supply Chain Matt Kelly said: “This was something nice to do to finish off our course. It’s been a nice class and we’re a great team. There was a pulling together of people to bring in cakes and the support from our instructors, the other classes and people in Raleigh was fantastic. I hadn’t heard of this charity before, even though they have been supporting the Armed Forces for over 70 years, so it’s a good way for us to develop our knowledge of organisations that are available to help military personnel.” DMWS’s Welfare Officers provide a 24/7 service and support troops in NHS hospitals and Ministry of Defence Hospital Units in the UK, including Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. They are also based in overseas hospitals in Germany and Cyprus, the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court and Recovery Centres in both the UK and Germany. What makes them unique compared to other Military Charities is the fact that their Welfare Officers deploy to areas of

conflict to support the troops on the frontline. The charity currently has Welfare Officers based in the Field Hospital in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan and have previously deployed to Iraq, Kosovo, the Falklands and World War II to name a few. Former Royal Navy medic Rachael MarlandRoberts, who is now one of the charities Welfare Officers, said: “All money raised by the sailors will go towards providing support to serving military people and their families. We support over 13,500 military personnel and their families every year, many that are coming to terms with a life changing illness or injury. “We cannot change the outcome but the support and comfort we provide to patients and their families has a huge impact on their wellbeing and resilience. We also offer a confidential ‘listening ear’ service to military personnel if they are experiencing difficulties in their professional or private lives.” Further information on the Defence Medical Welfare Service can be found online at www.dmws.org.uk.

Last October, a team from the ‘Walk Cornwall 2’ initiative were invited to Torpoint by Churches Together. One of the activities of the ‘Walkers’ was to conduct a doorstep survey, and this has produced a very comprehensive picture of how people in this area think about God. We thought that you would like to see a brief summary of the results: 1. Do you believe in some kind of God? Yes 67% No 17% Not sure 16% 2. Which of these statements best describes what you believe about God? Distant 9% A personal God 34% A force 21% Other 36% 3. Which of the following best describes what you believe happens after people die? We die and that’s it 9% Return to earth in another form 16% Everyone goes to Heaven 29% Go to Heaven or Hell 19% Not sure 27% 4. Do you believe Jesus Christ was? Didn’t exist at all 6% Just an ordinary man 19% A prophet or messenger from God 33% The only Son of God 24% Other 18% 5. If you could meet God and ask Him a question would it be about ... Why don’t You show yourself so everyone could believe? 9% Why is there suffering? 45% Why did you make the world? 5% Why am I on Earth? 5% Other 36% 6. If you could know God personally, would you be interested? No 17% Yes 53% Not sure 30% It was interesting to see that the majority of people we spoke to believed that God exists, and that Jesus Christ was a historical character, possibly a messenger from God. Many went further and said they believed his claim to be the only Son of God. Jesus himself once heard some of the rumours that were going round about him at the time, and so he asked his disciples ‘Who do you say that I am?” Now we are asking you the same crucial question, Who do you say that Jesus is? Your answer will have eternal repercussions. Peter’s response to Jesus’ question was to affirm that Jesus is the Holy One of God, who has the words of eternal life (John 6:68). The questionnaire results show that people feel some confusion about what happens after we die. It’s true that we often avoid thinking about this critical issue, and we risk leaving it until it is too late. With the approach of Easter, surely now would be a good time for us all to give this matter our serious attention? We each have free will to make our own, personal response to Jesus, and this can mark the beginning of eternal life for us, as it did for Peter and has done for millions of Christians since those early days. In the book of Revelation (3:20) Jesus speaks in a vision to us all: “I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

He worked with them to understand the play Woyzeck by Georg Buchner and to explore the different characters and their relationships. Martine Holmes, head of the Performing Arts faculty at the College said: “I am so proud of the professional way the students worked with each other in their approach to this set text and it was great to see them learning from each other as well as having a real actor to guide them.” Andy added: “It was great to return to Torpoint Community College, I love it here. Staff and students are all so welcoming and great to work with. I’m really looking forward to coming back again in the future.”

Job Vacancy – Light Vehicle Mechanic We are looking for an experienced light Vehicle Mechanic with full driving licence to work in our busy workshop. All applicants must be fully qualified. Ian Moore is presented with the Captain’s Prize by Rear Admiral Clive Johnstone

Top award for recruit Ian A 27-year-old from Saltash has been awarded the prize as the top recruit of his entry at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint. Trainee Submariner Ian Moore arrived at the Royal Navy training base in January for a 10-week induction course, designed to teach him the basic skills he will rely upon throughout his career. The course culminates in the passing-out-parade attended by families and friends, when Ian was presented with the Captain’s prize by Rear Admiral Clive Johnstone, the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy), who was invited to be the guest of honour. A former student at Plymouth University, Ian previously worked as a salesman. He was selected as the class leader at the beginning of the course and his duties included taking charge of the group in the absence of their instructor. Ian said: “I joined the Royal Navy for an exciting career with promotion prospects. At the beginning of the course I felt very overwhelmed, but I quickly settled into the routine and my confidence grew. “The 20 kilometre walk on Dartmoor, the weapons handling and the drill training were my highlights of training. I’m very excited to be moving on to the next stage of my training and then eventually joining my first submarine.” With his basic training complete Ian will move on to HMS Sultan in Hampshire for four months training. There he will learn how to maintain the machinery on board the submarine and to make components. Once fully qualified as an Engineering Technician Ian will be taught how to operate beneath the waves at the Royal Navy Submarine School based at HMS Raleigh. Details of career opportunities within the Royal Navy are available online at www.royalnavy.mod.uk or by calling the Recruitment Line on 08456 07 55 55.

Spring has sprung at Porte Rouge After a long and wet winter it was Porte Rouge’s turn to welcome the approach of spring with thoughts turning to blue skies and warm sunshine. Residents, relatives and staff all enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment provided by Poslips a local ’two piece’ who play the organ, the accordion and the fiddle whilst singing a range of favourites. In between we were regaled with jokes and stories which we all enjoyed. The afternoon was punctuated with homemade cakes, tea and coffee which always go down well. Everyone joined in with singing along and clapping and Poslips were invited to join us again in June when we are hoping that the doors will be wide open and we can enjoy the entertainment whilst sitting in the garden enjoying an ice cream.

Advertiser April 2014 WILCOVE

Sincere thanks to the Cornerstone Vision team who have assumed responsibility for the Advertiser and ensured that not only that a fresh and vibrant paper ‘hit the streets’ last month but that it also incorporated the WI Inspiring Women logo in conjunction with our monthly reports. Well it’s that time of the year when the Wilcove WI members turn their focus towards their 64th birthday celebrations and the more serious business of annual elections. While Sue Walters was re-elected as chair and new members welcomed onto the committee; a vote of thanks was also extended to those committed and ‘inspirational’ women like Paddy who left the committee having ensured that our WI branch has been an enjoyable experience for all involved. In the run up to 2015 and its centenary celebrations the National Women’s Institute is certainly witnessing an increase in media coverage and membership. Indeed in this month alone, several well-known women’s and in-house supermarket magazines have focused on how the WI has changed since its inception in 1915 to reflect the changing roles and diversity of 21st century women. While the WI still places importance on developing those traditional culinary and craft skills upon which it was founded, there is also a growing focus upon on the wider social and environmental issues affecting women in today’s society. In late March two of our members were attending the ‘Inspiring Women - working together’ conference in Westpoint, Exeter. The national ‘Inspiring Women’ initiative which was launched in 2013 aims to sign up some 15,000 women to a schools programme which involves them in talking to young women about their working lives. For more information visit www.inspiringthefuture.org While the campaign has attracted high profile ambassadors such as BBC’s Fiona Bruce or Carrie Longton (Mumsnet co-founder) it also focuses on recruiting ordinary women to act as role models and assist young women in achieving their potential. As JK Rowling once said ‘It’s our choices that show who we truly are far more than our abilities’. The Wilcove WI ladies would like to invite interested new members to join us in April when Helen Round an ‘inspirational’ local textile artist will demonstrate the craft of felt making. Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall.

TORPOINT

After the welcome to the annual meeting by President, Rosemary Slee, ‘Jerusalem’ was sung. Rosemary thanked Jean Morgan for arranging the craft session at the last meeting when members were able to take home some lovely craft items they had made. The Group Meeting at Wilcove on May 16 when the theme will have a ‘Who Dunnit’ theme. As it is going to be a very busy year for Torpoint WI we have decided not to take part in the Royal Cornwall Show competition but several members will be involved with stewarding and teas. Following the usual meeting business the WI Byelaws were read and the new Constitution was produced. Sandra Hocking read the financial statement explaining the receipts and payments made for the year. Barbara Brimacombe gave a report on the many activities, speakers, and meetings over the year and in her President’s address, Rosemary thanked

all the members of the Committee for their help and hard work. The Committee will stand as it is and nominations were requested and a ballot carried out for the position of President and Rosemary was unanimously appointed once again. The competition results for the year were announced and Rosemary said the support has been brilliant for the Alphabet competition. The overall winner who received a glass paperweight and a cheque for £10 was Sylvia White, joint second were Enid Gaved and Jean Price and third Betty Tarrant. The Flower of the Month Competition winner for the year was Enid Gaved, who received a cheque for £10, second was Jean Price and third Betty Tarrant. Following tea Jean Morgan held a brilliant quiz which proved highly competitive and great fun! The monthly competition winners for February were:- Competition ‘S’ - 1st Pat Woodhouse, 2nd Betty Tarrant and in 3rd place were Jean Price, Barbara Brimacome and Corrie Hamblin. Flower of the Month: 1st Jean Morgan, 2nd Betty Tarrant and 3rd Enid Gaved.

MAKER & RAME

Guest speaker Mick Ryan spoke about the work of a charity called CHICKS - which stands for Country Holidays for Inner City Kids. The charity was founded 22 years ago to give disadvantaged children. Originally camping holidays were provided but now there are two retreats, one in Cornwall and the other in Devon. They are similar to youth hostels and can accommodate eight boys and eight girls in dormitories. During the day they are introduced to climbing, horse riding, ice skating, swimming and other activities and more importantly good wholesome food. They have fun, make friends and gain confidence. Fresh air and exercise work their magic and by the end of the five days they are hugely improved and healed. The children come from all over UK and are referred by social services, Banardos, young cares groups and other agencies. For each camp there are eight volunteers and three staff who are all trained to take care of any problems thrown at them. The children are taken to the nearest railway station by whoever has referred them and CHICK staff pick them up from there. Sponsors include Jennifer Saunders, Jenny Agutter, David Gower, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Seth Lakeman. We inundated Mick with questions before plying him with tea and cakes. Earlier we decided on outings and lunches. Two birthday bouquets were given, one to Pam Harris and one to Anne Pleasence and plans made for the group’s 60th Anniversary lunch.

Chance to meet the local policing team Local residents can meet representatives from their local Neighbourhood Policing Teams at various events and locations during April. There are drop-in surgeries at the Maker with Rame Village Hall between 10am and 11am and the Community Shop in Antony between 11.30am and 12.30pm, both on April 19. Torpoint residents can meet members of their local Neighbourhood Team at the Sainsbury’s store on Antony Road, Torpoint on April 24 from 2pm onwards. Drop-in surgeries are also due to take place on May 24 between 10am and 11am at the Community Shop in Crafthole and between 11.30am and 12.30pm at Tanyard in Millbrook. For more information go to the Neighbourhood Policing section of the Devon & Cornwall Police website at www.devon-cornwall.police.uk

World Book Day at college Students and staff at Torpoint Community College entered into the spirit of World Book Day by running workshops and dressing up in the theme of Alice In Wonderland. Many other staff and students also dressed as famous literary characters. Year 11 students Aimee, Hannah, Beth ,Tianne, Jake and Jack ran literacy workshops in the library for year 7 students with nonsense poems, book extracts and performances. Cheryl Lockett, Head of English at the College, said: “I am so proud of the year 11 students for their commitment to making a real buzz about reading on World Book Day.”

All weather pitch plan moves a step closer Torpoint and Rame Active Community Sports Network has been working hard over the last few years to install a multi use games area alongside the YMCA Sports Hall in Torpoint. The Network has now made a significant step forward in making this aspiration a reality with planning permission obtained last August for the games area and changing facility to be constructed to the rear of the Sports Hall on the Torpoint Community College site. It has taken a significant amount of time, effort and money to get to this point and the Network is hugely grateful for the support offered by local businesses, the local Parish Councils, Torpoint Town Council, Cornwall Council, and CHAT amongst others. The Network now faces the challenge of securing approximately £1 million to complete the works. Efforts are being made to secure this funding through national organisations to deliver what is hoped to be a welcome and long overdue sports facility for the Torpoint and Rame Community. This facility will be used by the Community College during term time and by the community of Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula during the evenings and at weekends.

Sport Relief badminton tournament

A range of fund raising events in aid of Sport Relief took place at Torpoint Community College in March. The events included the second staff and student doubles badminton tournament. A total of 30 staff and students showed their support for the event and all donated generously towards the cause. After some excellent play from staff and students alike, Mr Pease and Ethan met Nuruz Zamal and Sam in a hotly contested final. After an early 5-1 lead was built up with powerful play from Nuruz and Sam, Mr Pease and Ethan mounted a comeback. Ethan in particular showed a strong determination and much skill to remain in the match. In the end Ethan and his partner left themselves with too much to do and Nuruz and Sam were the eventual 2014 Staff and Student badminton winners.

Cornwall Council one of most successful in England for meeting first choice of secondary applications Cornwall Council is one of the most successful authorities in England for meeting the first choice of schools for secondary school pupils. 98.9% of pupils in Cornwall will go to their first choice of secondary school this September. Cornwall Council’s performance has consistently been one of the best in the country. Last year 99% of pupils in Cornwall went to their first choice of secondary school – making the authority one of the top performing local authorities in this area. Congratulating the Council’s admissions staff for their hard work and commitment, Andrew Wallis, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said “Our staff work extremely hard to ensure that school places are allocated in a fair and transparent way and these impressive figures show that the vast majority of parents in Cornwall have been able to get their children into the schools of their choice”.

The Council received a total of 5,068 on time applications for secondary schools places this year. Of the 4,939 applications which were for schools in Cornwall, 4,885 (99%) received their first choice. 113 on time applications were received for out of county schools, of which 87% received their first choice of schools. This means that 4,998 children in Cornwall (98.9%) were allocated a place at their first choice of school. 33 children were allocated a place at their second choice of schools, with 7 receiving a place at their third choice. The remaining 30 children were allocated a place at their nearest school with room. All children who applied on time have been allocated a place at a school for September. Any parent who has not been allocated a place at their first choice school has a legal right of appeal to an independent appeals panel. This panel is completely independent of Government, local authorities or schools’ own governing bodies.
