Mayor’s Award honour for Torpoint Nursery’s head Mike Pearn has announced the winners of his Mayor’s Awards for 2015-16. He chose Rosemary Pellew as Citizen of the Year, Torpoint Nursery and Infant School headteacher Elisabeth CarneyHaworth as the Person of Courage while St Columba and Torpoint Rugby Club won the Community Award. In his citation for Rosemary Mike commented: “Rosemary has been part of the fabric of Torpoint for over 55 years and has in her career, probably taught over 1,000 of our children, not only educating them, but providing life skills and maternal care. In 1993 before she retired as a teacher, Carbeile Junior School celebrated its 40th anniversary and she prepared a display celebrating the time that the school had been in existence. Two other teachers from the Senior School Pat and Freda Manning who was instrumental in recording and investigating Torpoint’s history, saw the display and were so impressed, they asked her to join them in setting up Torpoint Archives. She agreed to this in 1993 and in 2001 she became Chairperson of Torpoint Archives and has led a small, but dedicated team of volunteers, in moving the Archives forward in its work to record, catalogue and maintain historic records of Torpoint. In addition she makes public talks, prepares presentations and displays, as well as writing magazine and newspaper articles. She is in touch with people from all over the world who contact the Archives for information on their past family, into which she will dig and delve. Her local historical knowledge is unsurpassed. Standing down from the Chair last month, she continues to manage Torpoint Archives and works

Rosemary Pellew receives the Citizen of the Year Award from Mike Pearn tirelessly in moving it forward.” Presenting Elisabeth with the Person of Courage Award, Mike said the ‘truly amazing lady’ had shown enormous courage after being thrown from her horse in June last year, breaking her neck in two places. She had to have two major operations and the surgeon said that he had used a lot of metalwork to mend her, but it had gone well. Mike added: “Despite the pain she showed a lot of grit and determination and was upbeat about her recovery. She was determined to return to her school before the end of the term in the July, Which she did!” Mike said he had chosen St Columba

Elisabeth Carney-Haworth receives the Person of Courage Year Award and Torpoint Rugby Club as organisation of the year, mainly because of their efforts in raising funds for St Luke’s Hospice and also for their service to rugby, which includes young people and a ladies team. “Many Torpoint friends and family have received care from St Luke’s. Secondly it is to thank them for the ongoing support which they have given to me and the town at events such as the Carnival and the Christmas lights. “Now that a lot of us are ‘getting on’ they have provided the much appreciated muscle and man power to help generally to set up for these events and lift and shift all the heavy gear. They are always ready and willing to give their support.”

on Torpoint Civic Parade

The sun shone for the annual the Torpoint Mayor’s civic parade and church service. Local dignitaries gathered to parade down Antony Road and then attend a church service at St James church after which the parade returned to the Council Chambers for refreshments. Local clubs and organisations attended and were led in the parade by the Royal Marine Cadet drum band, while the Royal VIP Guests waiting to parade British Legion banner bearers paraded with their banners. The streets were lined with spectators all the way down to the church and also for the return. New Mayor John Crago was delighted that so many local residents turned out to see the parade.

Mosquito rowers raise much needed funds for new boat Two rowing crews Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club set off just before low tide at 10am on July 2, not far beyond the Torpoint Ferries enduring the first of many sudden heavy showers, with the aim of reaching Calstock by 1pm.
Rowing against the tide, as far as Cargreen, called for brute force and a fair bit of determination, as the tide and wind had made the river very choppy. The stretch from Torpoint , passing Saltash on the left, with trains and cars overhead as the bridges were passed, to the approach to Cargreen was the hardest stretch of the day.
Sunshine bathed the rowers from time to time as the miles totted up though and soon the river narrowed and became calmer on the approach to Weir Quay, on the Devon side. Several yachts, day boats and kayaks were encountered at various stages and many a friendly wave or greeting exchanged. The wildlife was amazing, so many different bird songs with more to come on the return journey.
Passing Pentillie Castle and Cotehele Quay on the Cornish banks, the rowers were treated to waves from onlookers and the end was in sight after the Danescombe bend, albeit 30 minutes behind schedule.
It was a fitting finale to the first leg to pass under the lofty viaduct that connects the two counties. Family and friends greeted the crews with pasties, bananas and water, although some discovered the delights of the riverside ice cream parlour and the local pub.
After a slight delay to allow a pleasure boat to head off back down the river first, the crews returned with the tide kindly with them all the way this time. The wind had dropped and the showers did not materialise on the way home. Morale was high and the incentive of a warm reception, with a well stocked bar and tasty food from the restaurant, back at the sailing club spurred the rowers on.
Just passed Cargreen the shout from the safety boat came to advise there was a seal in the water and not much further down a fish jumped clean out of the water in front of the boat.
The rowers, passing Saltash and Wilcove for the second time, put on an admirable strong finishing spurt to pass the ferries and arrive home at 7.30pm.
Eight weary rowers and their cox had successfully completed the 20 plus miles, there and back, in their giglet more than 30 minutes earlier than expected and have raised in excess of £500 towards their fundraising goal, to purchase a pilot gig for competitive and more inclusive rowing in future.
Any further donations would be very welcome and the group have a Facebook page, called TMSC Rowers, and details of the rowing programme are also available on the TMSC website, along with all the other watersports and facilities available.

Carbeile’s Ofsted joy • Continued from front page desire to succeed has resulted in progress for all pupils and a school that is positive and fun but with a focus on learning at every opportunity. “To hear the lead inspector say that Carbeile is ‘an upper good, well on the road to outstanding’ was particularly exciting and we now have a number of targets to work on so that the ultimate aim is to receive that ‘Outstanding’ judgement at the next inspection. “Coupled with SATs results that are significantly above national averages in all subjects, 2016 has been a very successful year for Carbeile and we can’t wait to get started on that ‘road to outstanding.’ To see the full report, go to www.carbeile.cornwall.sch.uk

It’s College Prom night Year 11 students at Torpoint Community College have attended their leavers prom which was once again held at the college. This year the Sixth Form Common Room was transformed into a classy black, white and silver theme, to complement a marquee attached to the outside area which was adorned with photo bunting and balloons by Kardkadia. The students enjoyed a soft drink cocktail bar, buffet provided by Tina Crago the college canteen manager, sweet table, dress up photo booth and disco by Zak Nicholson as well as professional photography by Rob Frost. Many prizes were awarded throughout the evening: Prom King was awarded to Will Milliner and Prom Queen was Lucy Hallard; best transport to Josh Staniford and Lauren Huxtable; best dressed male Ollie Moran and best dressed female Chloe Sweetlove; Disco Dude was Sam Wainwright; and finally Disco Diva was Steph Holmes. Prom organisers Jenni Howard, Julie Haggerty and Teresa Hodgetts said that a great time was had by all students and staff who attended and once again the sun shone for the students.

All the fun of the Fair

A congratulatory card from Her Majesty the Queen took pride of place at the anniversary celebration

Diamond celebration in Cawsand As usual Torcare set up its annual ‘Strawberries and Cream’ stall at the Torpoint Community College field as part of the Lions Summer Fair. Sally, Catherine, Liz and Ann enjoyed the beautiful weather and sold over £120 worth of local strawberries and Cornish clotted cream. The money raised will supplement the Resident Amenities Fund which subsidises treats and activities for our residents, throughout the year. Thank you to everyone who continues to support Torcare and don’t forget that we are always on the lookout for good staff to join our team. Interested parties can contact us on recruitment@torcare.co.uk

People always come first at Torcare

A couple from Cawsand recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary. John and Joyce Roberts shared the big day with family, friends and neighbours, holding an open house at their home in the village. John, who was born in Cawsand, has lived there all his life. Joyce was living in Millbrook when they met and they were married at Maker Church in 1956. They have two children, Stephen and Margaret and one grandchild. Margaret now lives in Penzance, while Stephen travelled down from his home in Aberdeen to share in the celebration. John, who is 83, worked for local authorities for 33 years, before retiring as a housing inspector. Joyce, who celebrates her 80th birthday in September, worked in retail in Plymouth for many years. Pride of place at their 60th anniversary celebration was a special greeting card from Her Majesty the Queen.

Cawsand Sailing Club anniversary

Trip of a lifetime Pictured (from left) Dennis Turley (founding member), Brian Simmons (longstanding member), Commodore Mark Lentell, President Andy Negus, Joyce Smith (longstanding member), Brian George (longstanding member) Over 100 people celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Cawsand Bay Sailing Club, with a buffet and dancing to The Jaguars in The Maker With Rame Community Hall. Sailing activities have taken place in Cawsand Bay for well over 100 years, but 1976 was the formal founding of the Cawsand Bay Sailing Club. In a break from the dancing, Club Commodore Mark Lentell cut the celebratory cake. The Saturday evening closed relatively early, in deference to member’s regular Sunday morning race.

Somme centenary marked in Torpoint

Torpoint Royal British Legion remembered the start of the Battle of The Somme on July 1 at the town war memorial with a brief service led by Canon Lynn Parker. The service was attended by the Royal British Legion’s County Chairman, Torpoint branch President and Chairman, members, MP Sheryll Murray, Torpoint Mayor John Crago, Vice-Admiral Duncan Potts and Commander Sean Brady. They were joined by children from Carbeile and Torpoint Nursery and Infants School and members of the public. Whistles were blown at 7.30am to commemorate the exact time that the Battle of the Somme started in 1916.

With the help of families, friends and the local community over £4500 was raised to help Brownies from two units to embark on a dream holiday of a lifetime to Disneyland Paris. A total of nine Brownies, two Young Leaders and their leaders within the local area made the long journey during the Whitsun holiday to the Magical Kingdom within Paris. Brown Owl of both Brownie units, Helen Bunston, organised the trip with the vision of providing local girls with this amazing opportunity that they wouldn’t necessarily have been able to fulfil otherwise. All of the girls, along with their peers, got involved with the fundraising which covered the costs of return travel to London, insurance, catering whilst in Paris and personalised clothing to provide as a memory of the trip. The girls, and their leaders, took part in various fundraising activities such as bag packing in supermarkets, a sponsored walk, two discos, a Christmas show, letters to local businesses, a meal specifically for fundraising, a quiz night, silent auction, jumble sale, collection pots and by no means least supported by many raffles with prizes donated from all around! If there was a badge for fundraising the girls have certainly earned it.

Mosquito Sailing Club celebrates its 125th anniversary

Flags flying to celebrate 125 years at Torpoint Mosquito Photo by Marjorie Creek

Fun on the water Photo by Bonnie Watts

Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club celebrated its 125th birthday by opening the club to one and all on July 16. The club was blessed with perfect weather conditions and in what was the warmest day of the year so far, lots of visitors and members came along and tried out some of the water sports based at the club - rowing, dinghy sailing, yacht sailing, windsurfing and kayaks - and found out about the scuba diving section. Visitors were able to look around the club’s facilities which include a licensed bar and members’ restaurant as well as updated changing rooms and workshop and storage facilities made possible by funding secured in 2013 as part of the ‘Inspired Facilities’ legacy after the London 2012 Olympics. The club also has a thriving cadet section, a great social programme and is a RYA training centre. But perhaps the main focus of the day was indoors where there were stalls, live music and a display of the club’s history. The club has a long history of sailing and racing starting with historic Mosquito class boats‚ gaffrigged boats with huge canvas mainsails, lifting iron keels and rudders and rolling head sails. This history was commemorated in the form of a magnificent birthday cake made by club members Jane and Simon Harris-Wood which was topped by a replica of a Mosquito-class dinghy complete with hand-sewn sails. Event organiser Laurie Barton-Ingram said: “Thank you so much to everyone who came out to support and help us celebrate the club’s 125th birthday. I would also like to thank all the volunteers and organisers who helped make the day possible. It has been an extremely successful day for all sections of the club and we have gained a number of new members.”

Perfect weather for annual Summer Fair Torpoint and Rame Peninsular Lions had perfect weather for their annual Summer Fair with plenty of entertainment refreshments, stalls, bar, bouncy castle, donkey rides, Punch and Judy, stilt walkers, dancing, junior field gun challenge and lots more to keep everyone happy all afternoon. Mayor John Crago and Mayoress Tina Crago along with Lion President Andy Brownhill started proceedings at 12pm with Town Crier Clive O’Shaunnessy making a welcome call to welcome everyone to the event, the sun shone throughout the afternoon making it even more special. The Lions tea tent was busy all afternoon selling pasties, cakes, cream teas and sandwiches –all helping to raise money for the Lions charity. The bar was also kept pretty busy with cold drinks. A special presentation was made by the Lion President Andy to the Carbeile Junior School of a new set of tops complete with Lions Logo and Andy said they would supply new tops every year which was welcomed by the team and trainers. Mrs Hilary Pym was very brave and had her purple tinted hair shaved by Barbara and Lion Dave Rosson to raise money for CLIC Sargent charity, which supports young cancer sufferers and their families throughout the illness. The Fair was a complete success with young and old enjoying the spectacle and stallholders raising some money for their own charities. A good day was had by all.

The Father’s Day walk in June was definitely affected by the abysmal weather. It was held in between mist and heavy rain meaning attendance was definitely down from 2015, which was disappointing as it was our main event that month. It was such a shame as the walk around the beautiful Mount Edgcumbe Estate is always so delightful and by attending the event it enables all the walkers to raise money for their own charity or club. Maybe better weather next year and moving it slightly away from Father’s Day will encourage more walkers. Thank you for those who attended and for the money raised. Our July business meeting started with an informative talk by Sian Ward-Edwards, the fundraising manager for Plymouth, North Devon & Tamar Valley Macmillan Cancer Support. Sian thanked the club for all the support it has provided to date and then went on to inform us about the bigger picture of Macmillan support, which involves providing counselling for the sufferer and family, supplying nurses, even providing grants to help patients struggling to pay for certain treatments. The talk concluded with an explanatory video of all aspects of Macmillan support. President Andy Brownhill thanked Lion President Andy Brownhill welcomes guest speaker Sian WardSian for the visit and informing us Edwards of Macmillan Cancer Support what our donations are used for. Lion Viv Bennett was declared Vice President for 2016/17 year to support new President Andy. Viv has held the office as President before so is well used to carrying out the duties of Vice President and Andy and Viv will receive full support of the club members. Lion Dave Rosson himself a past President and in fact a past District Governor will take over the task of Zone Chairman from Lion Andy Burnham from the Callington Lions Club. Good luck in that role David and know you will support all the clubs in our zone. Please remember if you are in need of a wheelchair we have them available, all we ask is a donation at the end of use. Lion Norman Nethercott is the maintainer of the wheelchairs and what a good job he does keeping them up to a good standard, if you do require one Norman’s telephone is 01752 812567. Lion President Andy Brownhill with Lion Viv Bennet newly appointed Another appeal as usual for new for 2016/17 Vice President members! We could do with some new members or even helpers: being a Lion is all about raising money for the local community and it is very rewarding when we give money to good causes. We only meet once a month and only have a few bigger commitments a year. We do have fun events and also a really nice annual Charter Dinner evening so please think if you could spare a little of your time to help us raise money. If you or your club is in need of funds you can contact Lion Steve Morris on 01752 816427 Appeals secretary. Thank you once again for your support.

Love and peace above all The Referendum will be well and truly over by the time this article is printed. We will either be in or out of Europe, I just hope and pray that whatever is best for this country has been decided. Life is all about choices, not quite from the minute that we are born but soon afterwards we learn to choose what we like to eat and drink etc. We are not puppets on a stage being controlled by God the grand puppeteer, we are individuals with minds and wills. I know that some Christians believe that everything is mapped out for us and that God controls everything, but I do not. We are all entitled to our own opinions and beliefs. I do believe that God knows what is best for us, and wants what is best for us. The teachings of Jesus all show a kind, compassionate and fair way of living, in harmony with one another, doing our best for each other. There would not be any hunger, poverty, injustice or violence if we all lived by His teaching, especially The Beatitudes. Although the Old Testament part of the Bible includes a lot of violence and murder, and even

suggests that revenge is good ie ‘an eye for an eye’, the New Testament clearly presents a peaceful way of living. Jesus taught that this is wrong, and instead if we are hit on the cheek, to turn the other cheek – He showed forgiveness over and over again, even when dying on the cross. ‘Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.’ As far as I know every faith has similar teachings to that of Jesus, which makes the horrific murder of innocent people in Orlando a very evil act. All people have the right to live as they please, providing that they are not hurting anyone. No one has the right to take another person’s life, however offended by a particular lifestyle they may be. I was a child of the 60s and remember badges with ‘make love, not war’ written on them, they were probably associated with the protestors of the Vietnam War at the time. So whatever your faith or if you have none, I agree with them, love and peace, not hate and war. And all this starts in our own homes and with our own families.

Wilcove WI members out and about and enjoying cream teas! Wilcove WI members started the summer with several enjoyable visits, which seemed to involve eating a lot of cream teas as well! Falmouth WI hosted a visit during the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival which several members from Wilcove attended and thoroughly enjoyed. Despite the dull weather everyone enjoyed the street entertainment and craft stalls in the town before embarking on a river trip up the Carrick Roads. The scenery was glorious and the cream tea provided on board was delicious! A group of members and their families enjoyed a fascinating visit to the Bere Ferrers Station and Heritage Centre. Owned and run by Chris Grove and Bill Bailey, it has been an ongoing fulfilment of boyhood dreams, which Chris has been enthusiastically working on, with other equally dedicated volunteers, for over 25 years. It was like walking back into history. The day began with a beautiful scenic train ride from Devonport station to Gunnislake, along the lovely Tamar Valley, passing Bere Austin, Calstock, over the viaduct (and Cothele House) to Gunnislake and back to Bere Ferrers. Once there Chris, dressed in full porter uniform, provided a quick history of the station and its restoration. The station itself had pretty flower beds and hanging baskets as well as railway paraphernalia going back to early days of steam travel. In the heritage centre were several museum carriages, the signal box, with its simulation of links to the Honiton and Exmouth signalmen (via a microprocessor), model railways, and refurbished sleeping and dining Pullman style cars. After lunch in the old 1926 Teak Brake Carriage, coupled to one of three Hunslet diesel engines which Chris has restored, the group were treated to a ride in the carriage on the short stretch of restored track. Some visited the nearby church where there were fascinating artefacts connected to the family of Sir William de Ferrers and a beautiful piece of the original carved rood screen. There was just time to fit in a tea of scones with cream and strawberries and cake, before returning to Devonport. The group were thoroughly delighted and full of admiration for the work done by Chris and his friends.

It is an ideal visit for all the family and you may be assured of a warm welcome from Chris – but best to phone in advance to make sure he will be there and get the full benefit from your visit. Information may be found by Googling ‘Bere Ferrers Heritage Centre’ or phoning Chris on 07813 360066. Yet another opportunity to enjoy a cream tea was not missed by some Wilcove members when they attended the Crafthole WI Strawberry Tea event – a perfect relaxing afternoon with delicious refreshments. Members were very creative at their July meeting, making fun but very wearable bracelets and brooches from buttons, under the expert tuition of Lizzy Evans from Funky Poppy, now in the excellent Make shop, workshop and café in Vauxhall Street, Plymouth.

MAKER WITH RAME WI

We were very pleased to welcome Anne Hill to our meeting this month - back from Wales for a visit. She was a member of our group for very many years when living here. Arrangements were made for our coffee morning on July 30, and also for a window display in the Rame Centre in Millbrook from July 13 to 20. Two beautiful posies, made by Pam Harris, were presented to our birthday girls - Janet and Jennie. We then had a very interesting and lively talk by a member of the charity ‘Cornish Blood Bikes,’ who give up their spare time to transport blood and other urgent medical supplies for the NHS. They are able to provide a very fast service as motor bikes can weave in and out of traffic in an emergency, and can overtake on narrow roads much easier than cars. After joining us for tea and cake, our two bikers took us outside to have a look at the special bike, which is equipped with flashing blue lights and a siren (although they are not allowed to use them except in special circumstances), and we had our photos taken with them. Many of us took the opportunity to sit on the bike for our picture, which was quite a thrill Next month the WI will be paying a visit to Trematon Castle instead of our normal meeting in the Institute.

The Mayor of Torpoint John Crago and outgoing Mayor Mike Pearn were among guests at one of the Carbeile pop up restaurants. Parents and other guests are pictured below with some of the enthusiastic students

Pop in for the Pop Up! Year Five children at Carbeile Junior School opened Pop Up restaurants for their families and members of the community. In a geography lesson, the children learnt about Fairtrade products and decided to raise the profile of Fairtrade produce by opening Fairtrade restaurants. The children carried out surveys to find out the public’s favourite pizza toppings and their expectations from a restaurant. The results were used to create the menus, which the children also translated into French to make links with the curriculum. The children also created a questionnaire to find out how to run a restaurant, which the staff at The Jetty Restaurant in Torpoint completed. The children found out the most

important part of running a restaurant is good teamwork. The Jetty came to one of the Pop Up Restaurants and commented on the professionalism of the children. The Mayor of Torpoint also ate at one of the restaurants. The children worked collaboratively to prepare the food, decorate the restaurant and serve the customers. Once the desert had been served, the restaurant managers asked thecustomers to complete questionnaires and also suggest an amount they would pay for the food and service. The following week the children calculated the profit in their mathematics lesson. One of the children said the day was a dream come true, as when she is older she wants to run a restaurant.

Concert in the Park

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth invites you to a Concert at Benodet Park, Thanckes Park, Torpoint at 7pm on Thursday August 4. Please bring your own seating or blanket. Teas and coffees will be on sale. Free entry. No dogs allowed please.

On Wednesday June 29 at approximately 8.30 I was walking my dogs down Trevol Road (Captains Hill) when I slipped on a drain cover and severely damaged my knee. The response from passers by was wonderful. A lady on a school run stopped to take care of my dogs and some MOD Police officers making their

way to HMS Raleigh to use the range stayed with me sheltering me from the rain until the emergency units arrived. Special thanks to ‘Tim’ and the MOD gang for keeping me as dry as they could, safe from oncoming traffic and awake. I have had the knee rebuilt and I am starting the long road to recovery. Thank you again guys and ladies. Kelvin Spicer

Action from Carebeile Junior School Sports Day

From left to right Isla Hill, Ruby Pearce-Casey and Annabel Colwill work out how to transport a vital piece of equipment to Bahrain

Raleigh work experience

Photos by Andy Campfield

A group of 32 young people from Devon, Cornwall and further afield visited HMS Raleigh in July for work experience placements. The Royal Navy training base in Torpoint welcomed students aged between 14 and 18 for a week long programme. Open to young people who have an interest in joining the Armed Forces, the programme was designed to give the students a taste of the opportunities available, the training and the chance to learn new skills. Highlights of the week included the opportunity to experience some of the training undertaken by new recruits. The students were given the chance to get out onto the river, test their marksmanship skills in Raleigh computerised indoor training range and undertake practical challenges such as marching and PT. The programme also included a visit to the Royal Navy Submarine School based within HMS Raleigh and a look onboard the submarine HMS Courageous at Devonport Naval Base. At the Defence Maritime Logistics School, the young people were given an understanding of the vital contribution sailors specialising at writers, chefs, stewards and supply chain

ratings make to a warship’s effectiveness. After completing a challenge to transfer a fictional item of stores from the UK to Bahrain, 15-year-old Annabell Colwill from Millbrook, said: “I’d like to join the Navy in the future. I’m undecided on what option yet, but I quite like the look of the supply chain specialisation. I also enjoyed the shooting and the obstacle course, and I’m looking forward to the cooking later in the week. I think I’ll take away that teamwork is a big part of being in the Navy. Overall I think it’s made me want to join more.” HMS Raleigh’s work experience officer, Warrant Officer 1 Paul Stevenson, said: “HMS Raleigh has been offering work experience placements for a number of years now. We aim to show the young people what it’s like to be part of the military. “They march as a platoon around the establishment and we encourage those who are members of the Cadet Forces to wear their uniforms. “We hope that they all took something away from the experience; whether that’s something that helps in their future career within the Armed Forces or something they take to a civilian role.”
