Award for Rame’s first responders
Rame Peninsula’s volunteer first responders have received an award for outstanding service. The award was made by the South West Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust which recognised the vital role that the eight volunteers who comprise the Rame Peninsula Community First Responders provide on the Peninsula, including the villages of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand. Community First Responders are unpaid volunteers, who have received training from the South West Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust in basic life support procedures and respond to 999 emergencies when called upon by the Ambulance Control Centre. Such emergencies could involve cases of cardiac, respiratory and medical illness. The role of the First Responder is to give emergency treatment to lifethreatening conditions prior to the arrival of a paramedic or an ambulance. Providing immediate help within a critical few minutes of the onset of the illness can in many cases make a significant difference to the recovery of the patient.

Top award from Michelin Guide for Carew Arms Who would have known that in a little over a year of trading, The Carew Arms in Antony would have been included in the Michelin Guide 2018 as a Regional Standout, as well as being recommended in the Good Pub Guide and hold their Award for both food and wine. Since July 2016 the Carew Arms has worked extremely hard to help put heart and soul, as well as footfall, into the village of Antony, and is now a focal point for the community hosting regular quiz nights and cocktail tasting for locals, employing six full-time staff with numerous opportunities for parttime seasonal work. The pub is owned by Tremayne Carew Pole whose family has lived in the area since the 15th century. Keeping the family connection, Tremayne asked his sister-in-law, Emily Watkins of the Great British Menu fame, to help design the menu, which serves up affordable, seasonal food with an emphasis on local produce and exceptional quality. The menu is completely changed every three months, meaning if you have been lucky enough to visit already, you can treat yourself repeatedly to sampling new twists on traditional British cuisine with a modern edge. Head chef Jack Clayton, formerly heading up the kitchen at The Gurnard’s Head, Zennor makes the best use of seasonal produce, including pigeon and fresh produce from the Antony Estate. He can also be found foraging along the Lynher
Story by Karen Pilkington Estuary on his rare days off. Christmas is a great time to sample the delights on offer, with Christmas Party Menu’s starting from just £22 for three courses, and an attractive loft private dining area seating up to 20, or 35 for a drinks party. There is also a midweek set menu with two courses for £12 and three for just £16. Booking is advisable, but the friendly staff are happy to accommodate most impromptu calls and visits. The pub is a great place to sit and relax waiting for a table, or just to have a great bar meal. And cocktails, created by experienced bartender Harriet, are a visual as well as liquid delight. Who could refuse a Cornish Salted Caramel Espresso Martini or a Tregothnan Tea Berry Cooler! All of this comes with a good dose of informality and unpretentiousness – children are welcome, as are dogs in the pub, and the adjoining café and farm shop provides an excellent space for breakfast, or just great coffee and homemade cake. And whilst you are there you can pre-order a normal or needle-fast Christmas tree from the Antony Estate at the same no nonsense affordable prices that you’ll pay for your food. Carew Arms’ Field to fork and living room policy saves you and the environment pounds on reduced transport, packaging, and middle man mark ups. It’s a great ethos to live by.

Fantastic fireworks
Fireworks night at HMS Raleigh went with a bang with around 2,500 families, friends and members of the public joining staff and recruits for the spectacular show. The Band of Her Royal Marines Plymouth started the evening with a rousing performance leading into a ceremonial sunset ceremony, with a Guard made up of recruits undergoing the first stage of their Naval training. A 20-minute display saw fireworks light up the sky over the training base in Torpoint. The fireworks were provided d by two-times British champions Fantastic Fireworks and were accompanied by a mega-mix of hits to get toes tapping across the parade ground. Warrant Officer 1 Paul Bell, HMS Raleigh’s Base Warrant Officer, said: “It was an amazing night and we’d like to thank all those who attended. This was HMS Raleigh’s and the Royal Navy’s opportunity to show our appreciation to members of the local community for their much valued and continued support.”

Torpoint Lady Singers have presented a cheque for over £2500 to YMCA Torpoint Onside. Members were delighted to welcome Katie Singleton, YMCA’s fitness supervisor instructor, to one of their practice sessions where Chris Trethewey, chair of Torpoint Lady Singers presented her with a cheque for £2550 raised at the 25th 12 Hour Annual Singathon. Chris thanked YMCA officials for the help provided on the day of the Annual Singathon.
Katie thanked the choir and said the money raised helped to purchase equipment which enabled disabled children to exercise and have fun doing so. The Strollercise group also helped young mums to become fit after suffering from pre-natal and post-natal depression. The club welcomes young people up to the age of 30 and disabled children who want to develop their interests, skills, health and confidence through sport.
Dear Editor On Sunday afternoon of November 19 on our way to have lunch out, we passed a very, very hard working team of people clearing the footpath on the stretch of pavement that stretched from the Wilcove turn off, up to the entrance to Antony House. This, I believe was the continuation of what had been done some weeks prior to this. These people are just like you and I, ordinary folk who are fit enough to join in and help...and giving up part of their Sunday to help make Torpoint look ‘ship-shape’ again. A HUGE vote of thanks goes from myself and my family for all the wonderful work you do...and for having the pride in Torpoint to want to do this in the first place! For far too long, Torpoint has been the ‘poor relation’ when it comes to having things done by the council, so this wonderful troop of people have decided to ‘stand up and be counted’ and do it themselves. Sadly, I am not in the best of health, but if I was, I would be out there with them, even if it only meant taking coffee or tea for their short ‘breather’ time. However, if you are fit, have a wish to want to see YOUR town and surrounding areas looking great again, just contact this paper and they will be only too pleased to give you a contact number Huge thanks again my friends. Plymouth Citybus and P e r s o n a l I n j u ry Go Cornwall Bus launch Richard Harris contactless payment SOLICITORS Contactless payments are now available on all Plymouth Citybus services including those operating in East Cornwall under the Go Cornwall Bus banner. Buses are accepting contactless payment methods including bPay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, Visa and MasterCard. Customers can simply ask the driver for a ticket or multiple tickets and instead of paying with cash, use a method of contactless payment. Leader of the Plymouth Council, Ian Bowyer, and Plymouth Citybus managing director, Richard Stevens, formally launched contactless on board one of the new Citybus fleet in November. Multiple tickets can be purchased in one contactless transaction as long as the total amounts to £30 or less. This means that tickets including dayrider, week and group-rider for example can all be purchased on board using contactless. Plymouth Citybus is the only operator in Plymouth and the first in Devon to offer contactless as an on bus payment method. The payment method has been introduced after an extensive trial period on new ticket machines, which were installed across the Citybus fleet in October. Richard Stevens, managing director, Plymouth Citybus, said: “This is a big step forward for us in removing the barriers to bus travel.

From now on passengers won’t need to carry cash to board our buses. Contactless also makes boarding faster, so we hope to see a direct improvement in boarding times.”
Contactless card payment is just one of the recent improvements to the service offered by Plymouth Citybus who in October 2017 was named ‘Medium Bus Operator of the Year’ at the Routeone Awards and was highly commended as ‘Bus Operator of the Year’ at the National Transport Awards.

A chapel in Millbrook is among the latest winners of a charity initiative run by a leading Cornwall housebuilder. Millbrook Chapel has been chosen to receive £880 from Persimmon Homes Cornwall, from the housebuilder’s Community Champions scheme, which has gifted over £1.5million to good causes. The Friends of Millbrook Chapel of Rest are aiming to raise funds to repair and refurbish the building, which dates back to 1904. They have been set the target of raising £20,000 for the charming chapel – with plans to reopen it as a heritage and educational centre. Bruce Taggart, chairman of the chapel, said: “Persimmon’s donation is a step in the right direction for our works. “After a structural survey, it’s been identified that the chapel is sound but requires considerable repairs.
We plan to employ local trades to carry out the building work. “We have a Christmas craft fayre and a spring flower festival on the horizon to help fundraise, so we’re sure the future is bright for Millbrook Chapel.” Daniel Heathcote, director in charge at Persimmon Homes Cornwall, said: “We are committed to supporting the communities in which we are building and the Community Champions scheme is just one way in which we do that. “Millbrook Chpael is a great cause which we are delighted to support and we would certainly encourage further Cornwall charities and community groups to apply.” Organisations can apply for funding by completing a simple online form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity

Farewell to Kath and Sharon A lovely afternoon was had by all at the Old Vicarage, Antony as staff and residents alike came together to celebrate Sharon Bindon and Kath Williams 21 year length of service with Torcare. The general manager Ann Newcombe presented the ladies vouchers from Torcare in appreciation of their long service. Flowers, thanks and good wishes were toasted in Prosecco and Dawn, Antony’s cook produced a lovely afternoon tea chosen by the girls of quiche, individual pavlovas and cheesecake. Ann said: “Congratulations to you both and we hope to have your support for many years to come.” Meanwhile, several lucky residents of Torcare’s Nursing Home enjoyed the spectacular sight of the Poppies Wave, a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads suspended on towering stalks, was originally seen at the Tower of London as part of the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red. Situated centrally on the Hoe, which looks directly towards Plymouth Sound commemorating the almost 7,300 servicemen and women of the First World War who have no known grave and the seamen of the Royal Navy who sailed from Plymouth. The small party then moved onto the Barbican where they enjoyed a fish n chip supper before returning home. This year Torcare is sponsoring a Christmas tree in St James Church. Residents and staff have all had a hand in making the decorations. The newly appointed Wellbeing Co-ordinator for Torcare along with much support from the staff has organised an array of entertainment over this Christmas period to which all family and friends are welcome – from the panto Wizard of Oz, to the Sherry and Minced Pie afternoon and lots of local artists, bands and singers coming along to entertain. We should all have a merry and jolly Christmas. As usual The Old Vicarage, Porte Rouge and The Torpoint Nursing Centre are selling raffle tickets for their in house raffle prizes. Thank you to all who have donated prizes. All proceeds go toward the Residents Amenities Fund. Please continue to support us by buying raffle tickets. Torcare would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas.

Youngsters create their own poppy masterpiece
Children at St Nicholas Church of England Primary School in Downderry produced their own poppy masterpiece. Before half term, every child in the school made a poppy out of clay. After half term a group of children visited Roseacre Care Home in St Winnolls and worked with the residents to create more poppies for the school’s masterpiece. Inspired by a visit to the Poppy Wave in Plymouth, a poppy masterpiece was built on the school field on Friday November 11 and a Remembrance service Dinghy section prize-winners 2017 Photo: Brigitte Mann was held. Some of the residents from Roseacre Care Home visited the school for the service. The clay poppies were sold to parents and members of the local community to raise for money for the poppy appeal. Choirs raise thousands for cancer diagnosis equipment Cornwall’s choirs are uniting in song to improve local cancer treatment. An evening of music in Torpoint on November 17 raised £1,154 for molecular diagnostic equipment at Derriford Hospital’s oncology department. Currently patients from Devon and Cornwall have to travel to Bristol for the nearest equipment capable of providing the fastest diagnosis - usually within 24 hours. Otherwise patients can wait several weeks, with samples being sent around the country, and consequent delays to critical life-saving treatment. Patients from the more remote parts of Cornwall are obliged to make a round trip of 400 miles to Bristol as there is no such equipment any nearer. Prompted by the loss of several members to cancer, the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir launched a campaign in late July, to help Derriford Oncology purchase the £80,000 equipment. The machine’s effectiveness can be enhanced by a range of add-on options costing tens of thousands. The aim is to help bankroll as much extra technical kit as possible, to broaden its scope and effectiveness. With the mantra of ‘Help save a life - It could be yours!’ a total of almost £7,000 has already been raised. “We hope to reach £10,000 by Christmas,” said Rame chairman Clive Brinkmann. Rame approached the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs who have helped the appeal gather momentum, with several choirs from south west Cornwall planning events in the coming weeks, and into new year. The remotest communities are the ones where cancer victims can face round trips of 1012 hours for diagnoses. The Torpoint concert in St James’s Church featured Burraton and Pelynt choirs, while members of several other choirs including Leskerrit, Fisherman’s Friend, and Wadebridge also turned out in support to perform with Rame under their musical director Jonathan Lewsey. Molecular scientist Jo Farrugia put the role of the equipment into perspective, while a Torpoint resident, Vicky Hilborne, in remission from a brain tumour, spoke eloquently and movingly about what treatment had meant to her. The evening was superbly compered by Adrian Wilton, and included solos from Rame accompanist Liz Sidebotham, and an organ solo from Burraton musical director Phil Taylor. The evening concluded with Taylor conducting all the choirs and visiting choristors in most rousing renditions of The Lord’s Prayer, American Trilogy, and Trelawney. Wadebridge MVC had staged a concert of their own earlier in November, with The Kingsmen, where £716 was generously turned over to the oncology cause.

Townsfolk of Torpoint turned out in large numbers again, reflecting the fact that the parade gets bigger every year. Everyone is keen to show respect for past and present armed forces personnel who served to keep our country safe.

Torpoint Athletic Football Club held a special Remembrance commemorative event at their South West Peninsula League match against Plymouth Argyle Reserves on November 10. The ceremony involved uniformed Service personnel connected with TAFC, standard bearers and a bugler from the Royal British Legion who participated in the Remembrance ceremony prior to kick off. TAFC offered free admission to service personnel and veterans which drew a larger than normal crowd and contributed to an excellent atmosphere. The wreath was laid by Lt Cdr Bill Booth, who is Club Secretary. Paul Whitworth, TAFC Club Chairman, a Royal Navy veteran himself, stressed the close links the club has both with the local community and the services, particularly the Royal Navy. “We have many supporters, players and committee members who have service links so were very keen to mark Remembrance and pay our respects, whilst hopefully involving service personnel new to the area into the club. Tonight has been a great success and we would like to thank all who made it possible,” said Paul.

Rame Gig Club celebrates Rame Gig Club’s presentation evening at Kingsand Community Hall was a huge success with many well deserved awards being given for various achievements over the 2017 season. Special thanks to Jo and her team for putting the evening together and also to Woody and Geoff for keeping everyone dancing the night away. The club is in its 25th year and continues to go from strength to strength, having three traditional gigs: Spirit of Rame, Penlee Point and Minnadhu, not forgetting our training gig Maker Wave. Changes are about to take place in the fitness suite with the arrival of new equipment, which means the club soon be able to hold indoor rowing competitions linked with British Rowing The club has enjoyed a variety of social events, alongside the racing season, including fun days, barbecues, a man overboard drill and others. There has also been plenty of fund raising by the members for local and national charities. The main rowing season has been rounded off – due mainly to the outstanding performances of the Junior crews – by the club being shortlisted for the Club of the Year Award by Cornwall Sports Partnership. Although the club did not take top honours its members are very proud
to have been recognised for their commitment to sport and fitness within the local community. In November, eight members of the club travelled to Holland, taking one of the club gigs, Penlee Point. This was to compete in the 26th MuidenPampus-Muiden Roeisloepenrace. There were around 200 boats of various classes competing to row three 7k races over two days. Rame Ladies finished eighth and the Men finished 14th in their class. The Dutch sure know how to party, pleased to say Rame competed well in that department too! They even managed a day trip to Amsterdam. A great time was had by all. Since the racing season has finished the members are enjoying social Sundays. Most times having enough rowers to put three gigs on the water. On Remembrance Sunday the three crews observed the two minute silence and showed their respect, to the fallen, by having all three crews with paddles up and heads bowed. Thanks to Norman and Ali for the choreography and remembrance poem. Membership for 2018 is due in January. The fee is £100. Payment in full by January 31 attracts will be a 10% discount. Check the club’s web page for other membership details, winter training, the Christmas Communal Dinner and other activities.

Monthly message from the Mayor It is with great sadness that I report the passing of former Town Councillor Ivan Southworth, Ivan was a member of the Town Council for a number of years and served on several organisations in the town. Ivan will be sadly missed by all those who knew him and we send sincere condolences to Councillor Mrs Rose Southworth and her family. Some previous events attended in the last month, have included: October 21 - Maureen and I attended Trafalgar Night Dinner held at the Torpoint Athletic Football Club on behalf of the Torpoint and Rame Branch Royal Naval Association. We were treated to a stupendous dinner and listened in awe to the guest of honour, Commander Irvine Lindsay OBE MA Royal Navy, Officer Commanding Royal Naval Submarine School to his many exploits throughout his naval career. November 2 – Maureen and I attended the HMS Raleigh Fireworks Display as VIP guests of Capt Ellie Ablett. What a fantastic event with over 2,000 in attendance and a display that exceeded over 15 minutes. November 3 – Maureen and I attended the Charity Fashion Show in aid of Bone Cancer Research Trust held in the Council Chambers. Clothes and gifts were shown by Studio 2 and over £1,000 was raised on the night. Well done to Janet Jenness and her team, especially the models you did a sterling job parading along the catwalk full of poise and confidence. I am looking forward to the summer show, if that is at all possible. November 10 – I attended the Torpoint Nursery and Infants School Remembrance Day Service. Headteacher Mrs Elisabeth CarneyHaworth and the rest of her team must be proud of how well the pupils behaved and led the service from start to finish. The reading ability of the pupils was amazing. November 10 – The Mayor’s Cadet Chris Hancock and I attended the Remembrance Festival at Plymouth Pavilions. It was a sombre occasion but filled with warmth and respect. November 11 - I attended the Remembrance Service held in Sparrow Park. The children from our local schools and the many standards on parade made the whole service extra special. November 12 - Maureen and I attended the Service for Remembrance held at St James Church Torpoint. The windy weather did not stop over 50 poppy wreaths being laid, and the parade was one of the largest I have ever seen in Torpoint. Over 2,000 people attended the open air service held at Eliot Square. Torpoint Town Council is continuing to look at ways of providing inspiration and meeting aspirations for services which fall under its jurisdiction within the town. One area which we are keen to have an
impact upon are the parks in the town. Currently the town council oversees the upkeep of the following parks: Rendel Park, Sparrow Park and Benodét Park. These small parks are maintained by the town council and issues within these parks can be reported in the first instance at admin@torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk or 01752 814885. The other parks and green spaces within the town are currently maintained by Cornwall Council, and issues within these parks can be reported on www.cornwall.gov.uk/report-it Dialogue between Cornwall Council and the Town Council is continuing about the devolution of assets and services from Cornwall Council. It is hoped that once these are under the town council control, improvement to facilities can be implemented to provide a safe environment especially for our young people. Broken play equipment will be replaced and improved, and it is hoped that even outdoor multi gyms will be installed in suitable locations. Budgets for these improvements have been included in next year’s budget proposals and if required will be used accordingly. New bus shelters are being installed and a replacement programme for those in need of refurbishment is being considered. With winter fast approaching I am sure these will be most welcomed by regular bus users. Dog fouling is yet again a major problem throughout the town. Besides being unsightly it is a major health and safety issue particular where young children may walk or play. Please can I ask all dog owners to be responsible and clean up their dog fouling, thank you. The enforcement officer has the power to issue on the spot fines to owners caught not clearing up after their pet. Remember Bag It and Bin It. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the following residents of the town: Jasmine Vigus-Huggins crowned Little Miss Teen Great Britain 2017/18 at the finals held in Blackpool. Well done Jasmine for putting Torpoint on the map yet again and best wishes for your year ahead. Tom McHale, Truro City goalkeeper, who made the FA Cup 1st Round, but unfortunately were defeated by Charlton, after a fantastic effort. What a great experience Tom playing at The Valley, and best wishes for the rest of the season. Councillor John Tivnan, Torpoint Town Council and his recent presentation of the British Empire Medal for services to Local Government and the community. Well done John and carry on the good work. Until next time….
The Mayor of Torpoint Coun Lambert Keise
Personal service guaranteed, as Jack leads family firm of funeral directors into 4th generation At just 23, Jack Weekes didn’t have to think twice when he was given the opportunity this summer to take over as head of his family’s independent firm, J Weekes Funeral Directors. Jack is the fourth generation of the Millbrook firm, which was set up by his great granddad, Harry Weekes, in 1934. When Jack’s granddad, John, finally called it a day after a remarkable 59 years of service, Jack decided it was time to step up. “Grandad took over the business at quite a young age when his father died and he wanted to be able to pass it on,” said Jack. “I’d been working as a joiner for three years and went self-employed after my apprenticeship so I would always come and help granddad when he needed a hand. “He hoped I’d go into it eventually and I always wanted to do it once he retired. But he hasn’t left completely. He didn’t take a holiday in 27 years and he still comes in to help even now! He only lives two doors up the road and it’s nice to be able to draw on his experience and advice.” Jack will be putting his carpentry skills to work by offering the option of hand-crafted coffins: “It always used to be the case that the local funeral director would be the local carpenter because he would make the coffins. That’s how our family firm started. But then manufactured coffins came along. We’re still offering manufactured coffins, obviously, but I think the option of a hand-made solid oak or mahogany coffin is a unique addition. I don’t know of anyone else that’s doing it.” It’s one of the traditional services Jack is keen to re-introduce. Another in 2018 will be the offer of a horse-drawn hearse, with his partner, Charlotte Pine, at the reins with her four-year-old Fell cross horse, Missy. The hearse is being hand made by Fenix Carriages, whose customers include the Royal Family. “We have three churches within a one-mile radius and I think the horse-drawn hearse will be very popular,” said Jack. “But it will be available, wherever the service is held.” Jack, his brother Tom and dad Shaun all helped out when the new family funeral home in St John’s Road was built three years ago. With living accommodation upstairs at the premises, care and attention is assured 24/7, and Jack is available on call at all times. Although J Weekes is best known in South East Cornwall including Torpoint, Saltash and the Rame Peninsula, Jack offers a wider service which takes in the Plymouth area. And he said: “Bigger firms can’t offer the same sort of personal service. The only person people will see is me so they don’t have to deal with lots of different people, I’m there to support them every step of the way. People often comment on the attentive, compassionate service. They like to have a more family-orientated experience during this testing period in their lives.” Jack added: “It’s very rewarding, actually, being on the whole journey with people who are rock bottom when you first see them

Jack Weekes..fourth generation funeral director but who are comforted through the journey to the point where they come in afterwards to say ‘thank you’. It’s knowing how to talk to people and it’s supporting people through a very difficult time.” Jack will arrange every aspect of the funeral service, removing as much of the strain as possible to allow families to focus on remembering and celebrating their loved ones. He will always visit people in the comfort of their own homes, unless they prefer to come into the office for personal reasons. “I will take care of everything and they can rest assured that everything will be arranged as they wish,” said Jack. There is a set price list for a range of funerals, from £2,200 to £3,118, which includes the church or crematorium fees. Bespoke arrangements can also be made to suit families’ requirements. “And we can offer rates that are much more competitive than most large firms,” said Jack. The company supports other businesses by working with independent florists and printers in the area: “We’re a well-known local family and we play an active part in the community, part of that is working with other local businesses. We also raise money for charities and we sponsor matches and match day programmes at Plymouth Argyle.” For peace of mind, J Weekes – a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors – also offers pre-paid funeral plans. Contact Jack to discuss a plan suited to your needs. As for the family business, it seems it’s in good hands for the foreseeable future. Heaven...the ultimate destination of happiness “What is Christmas all about daddy?” I was asked this question by one of my children who was in a thoughtful mood. Unusually amongst Catholic priests I am married with children – 10 children in fact! Don’t worry there is no scandal – it is all above board. When I left the Church of England to become a Catholic, the Pope granted me a dispensation from celibacy, which meant as a married man I could become a Catholic priest. Getting back to the question my child asked, I want to share the sort of thing I try to say to this sort of question – something that is both truthful and as simple as I can manage! To the Jewish people, God revealed not only that He existed but that also He was for them – He was on their side. They had to keep His laws and He would keep His promises. God revealed Himself as the Jewish people’s ‘Abba’ or as we would say, Father. Now Christmas is all about the next thing God wanted to reveal about Himself. For when the time was right, and when there was the absolutely perfect woman to help Him, God became a human being. God revealed Himself as God who is with us (in Hebrew this is ‘Emmanuel’).

Opera singer William is group’s guest Opera singer and film star William Shimell was the guest at the Torpoint Wives Group meeting at Cornerstone Church in October. William, who now lives in Torpoint, was introduced by chair Eve Oates. William, who has been an opera singer for 37 years, was accepted as a choir boy at Westminster at the age of eight. He was later one of the few chosen from 400 applicants to study at the Guildhall School of Music. During his illustrious career, his glorious voice took him to 20 different countries singing over the years in 60 different operas in premier opera theatres such as La Scala in Milan. Members had the immense pleasure of listening to his recordings from those operas.
He spoke of humorous incidents behind the scenes and some mishaps on stage, the conductors
Wilcove WI remember their founder member Members were saddened by news of the death in November of Wilcove WI founder member, Marjorie Harwood, at the age of 99. Marjorie organised the inaugural meeting of Wilcove WI in March 1950 and held the offices of President, Secretary and Treasurer during her amazing 50 years of membership, taking the WI through both tough and good times. Marjorie was able to attend the 65th birthday celebrations in 2015 when she spoke about the value of the WI to its members and the community. There was a short tribute to Marjorie at the beginning of the November meeting, followed by a toast in her memory. Items illustrating her contribution to the WI were chosen from the archive and displayed at the meeting. In line with Marjorie’s wishes, Wilcove WI provided the catering in Cove Hall following her funeral service on Friday 24 November. On a happier note, Wilcove WI members reflected on their very successful coffee and craft
morning held in November, which raised over £450. The speaker at the November meeting was Mike Griffiths, who gave a fascinating account of the work of his father and other amateur expert radio operators during the Second
World War. His father was sent to St Erth and recruited to listen to and transcribe enemy radio signals and send them on to Bletchley Park to contribute to the vital work carried out there. A very convivial four-corner craft afternoon was held on Tuesday 28 November, where members of Wilcove and other local WIs were able to choose 2 activities from: making Christmas sugar paste figures; folding wrapping paper to make gift bags; using stamps and watercolour to
God asked the perfect lady called Myriam (in Hebrew) or we call Mary (in English), to be mother of God become a man – Jesus. God did this so that everyone could come to know that not only is God for us, but God is with us. And the fact that God became a human being with Mary’s co-operation, this changed everything. And this is what Christmas is all about! The meaning of Christmas is ‘Immanuel’ – God is with us. Christmas begins the earthly lifetime of Jesus during which Jesus shared the next revelation about Himself. Not only is God for us, not only is God with us, but God also greatly desires to be in us if we allow Him. Jesus revealed that God is also Holy Spirit and that, if we want to, the Spirit of God can live in us and make us children of God. In making us children of God the Holy Spirit leads us towards the heaven – which is the ultimate destination of perfect happiness, God wants for us all. Answering children’s questions is never easy – even for a Catholic priest who is also a veteran father! May the God who came at the first Christmas bless you and all your loved ones with peace and joy.
create unique Christmas cards or sewing folded fabric decorations for the tree. Mulled wine and mincepies were provided to contribute to the seasonal theme of the event. Wilcove WI will host a Carol Service in Maryfield Church at 2pm on Friday 15 December, and all are welcome to attend. The next full meeting will be at 7.30 pm on Tuesday January 16, in Cove Hall, Wilcove, when Christine Wiseman will talk about ‘Researching your family tree’. Visitors would be most welcome.
TORPOINT
Torpoint WI is celebrating its 43rd Birthday this month. Rosemary Slee, President, welcomed everyone and advised members of the passing of one of our former, long-standing members of the Torpoint Group, Marjorie Harwood, and in her memory we all sang Jerusalem at the start of the meeting. Members enjoyed a delicious birthday meal at the Little Fox, Crafthole, earlier in the month and Rosemary thanked Sue Hale for arranging a super evening.
We were then treated to a fascinating talk by Mr Philip Rodda on the history of Rodda’s Creamery who produce the original Cornish Clotted Cream in Scorrier, Cornwall. Rodda’s is very much a family concern, started over 120 years ago and despite the lack of production during the Second World War, re-started production at the end of food rationing in 1953 and still produces the famous clotted cream which is exported within the UK and worldwide. As well as clotted cream, Rodda’s now produce Cornish butter, custard and skimmed milk. We all learned so much more about the production of one of our most famous local products. William said his entry into the film world was unexpected , how he starred with Juliette Binoche and walked the famous red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. He is now retired, but just recently was the soloist at one of The Torpoint Lady Singers concerts. William moved to Cawsand whilst still singing abroad, commuting to Milan and New York for concerts, in between his travels he took the opportunity to sing with The Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir, singing locally at that time. Two locals honoured Two local people awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours attended a special ceremony at Mount Edgcumbe House where Colonel Edward Bolitho, the Lord Lieutenant thanked them for their service to their communities. The two recipients, who were among five people from Cornwall to be honoured were: Peter Lavers, for services to the community in the Rame Peninsula. Peter has been a committed volunteer and fundraiser for the Rame Peninsular branch of the RNLI and has been credited with much of its success. He has been a local Parish Councillor including a term as Vice Chairman and now volunteers for Mount Edgcumbe. John Tivnan for services to local government and the community. John has dedicated himself to the community of Torpoint for many years. He set up the Torpoint Community Events Company to support the Christmas lights, and the organisation has supported many other events.
