Silver success for local youngsters A presentation took place in the Torpoint Town Hall for the first group of young people who had achieved their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards through the Torpoint Open Award Centre. The Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Rachel Tanner presented certificates and badges to the young people, watched by council members. The group had completed their qualifying expedition in the New Forest in the summer after being trained together by the team. They had also undertaken individual volunteering work in the local community, regularly attended a sport activity and learned and progressed with a skill. All these activities have been for an hour a week commitment over a period of months. The Torpoint Open Award Centre has been open for the past year to assist young people in the area who wish to complete or undertake their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The co-ordinator is Paul Smith – who is an experienced youth worker and DofE Leader. Further volunteers for the team are needed and anyone interested should contact Karin Saunders, the DofE Manager at Young People Cornwall on 07840016039 or karin.saunders@ ypc.org.uk. Young people interested in finding out more about taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme or wish to enrol please contact Paul Smith Email: silverfox653@ hotmail.com. Bronze and Silver enrolments currently cost £22 and Golds are £29 (payable to Young People Cornwall). The age range is from 13

Young People Cornwall currently has a licence to deliver DofE activity to disadvantaged, SEND and home educated young people and those that cannot access
it through the normal school route. The team has a wealth of experience behind them and have a small amount of kit funded by a National Lottery Bid that can be supplied to participants. Further funding and donations is being sought to support any disadvantaged young people who wish to take part in the Torpoint
and Millbrook area. It is hoped that the new Torpoint Open Award Centre will benefit all young people in the area and the community in general.
Torpoint police investigating thefts at Mount Edgcumbe and Antony Estate
Police are investigating reports of a burglary at Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park. The incident was reported to have taken place at approximately 5.30am on Thursday December 5. It was reported that entry had been gained to the house where an untidy search was carried out and a number of items taken. These included a Dell Latitude 5490 laptop, a Dell 24 inch flat screen monitor and a Lenovo smart tablet. Torpoint Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or anyone who visited the property on Wednesday December 4 and saw anything suspicious. They would also like to identify and speak to a man who visited the house shortly before closing on Wednesday and may have information vital to the investigation. He is described as a white male, around 6ft tall of stocky build. He had dark hair and prominent crooked top teeth. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a black fleece. Anyone with information please contact police on 101 quoting CR/109290/19. Meanwhile another police investigation is under way following the theft of trees at the Antony Estate. Over the weekend of the December 6 to 9, Prime Oak and Christmas trees were stolen from the estate grounds. The Oak is worth between £7000 to £9000 and the quantity of Christmas trees were valued at approximately £20 each. The police believe it would have taken a large vehicle and trailer to transport the trees. They have appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious or can help with the investigation to contact them by either calling 101, emailing 101@dc.police.uk or contacting Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111, quoting ICR/91685.

Torpoint-based Mothers Ruin 1751 are excited that their amazing ‘Gins & Fins’ event being held at National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth is just a few weeks away! It is set to be the largest gin festival in the region and takes place on February 29. Organiser Craig Brook-Hewitt, business owner and a keen environmentalist wanted to find a venue which would accommodate his love of gin, the stunning South West coastline and it’s wildlife. The National Marine Aquarium is the home of the Ocean Conservation Trust and certainly fitted those requirements! A percentage of the event admission tickets is being donated to the trust and also includes admission into the aquarium and into an undersea world of South West gins! A fabulous selection of distillers have already booked to attend & will be providing guests with taster sampling whilst the themed bars will offer over 70 varieties of gin, served with appropriate tonics and garnish. There will be a goodie bag, canapés, eco friendly traders & a few surprises on the evening all included in the admission price of just £20! Craig said: “I attend all the local gin festivals and most of them offer very little entertainment - so I wanted to do something different. Gin’s & Fin’s will feature around 80 different types of gins as well as food, live music, singers and even mermaids swimming in one of the big tanks in the aquarium. It’s obviously an adults only event which means people who attend can enjoy touring the aquarium without lots of children around. “The event runs from 6pm to 11.30pm, so there will be plenty of time to enjoy the occasion,” he added. Craig combines his business ambitions with a strong environmentally-friendly outlook. “We will have lots of eco-friendly traders there on the night, and we will be launching our own bio-degradable ‘Tipple Box’ – an eco-friendly sustainable drinks product - as well as donating £5 from each ticket sold to the Ocean Conservation Trust.” The ticket includes access to the Aquarium, goodie bag, gin glass, tasters and canape´s. Tickets are available at www.eventbrite. co.uk. For more information about the event visit www.mothersruin1751.co.uk or visit their page on Facebook.

We have once again been overtaken by time, even though all the plans and arrangements that have been made over the last months have gone to plan it still feels like we were paddling furiously to go forward. Anyhow, we started off the Christmas proceedings in 2019 with the switching on of the Torpoint town lights, where hundreds of people lined Fore Street hustling and bustling in and out of shops and stalls lining the route. Santa made his way from the far end of town and set himself up to welcome the children in the hastily made grotto in the library due to inclement weather, and spoke to all and surprising many by knowing their names. Then came the Christmas sleigh ride route throughout the Peninsula, from December 1 until December 23 when Santa had to go home. Many roads traversed and many miles trodden through all the towns and villages in our area brought lots of youngsters out to see the man himself in his newly made and liveried sleigh. This was supplemented by Santa doing two days of ho-ho ho-ing at Mount Edgcumbe House for their Winter Fair, a great venue for a great event. Many thanks go to all those people who came out to support us and wish us good luck for the future. We would like to say that without your support we wouldn’t be able to help those in need, Thank You. Santa came and Christmas passed once again but we had to keep on going with our preparations for the New Years’ Day Dip in Cawsand Bay.
Report by Lion Stephen Murray
The bay area is one of the most attractive places to visit, with both Kingsand and Cawsand offering beautiful views of the coast and warm and inviting pubs and restaurants, added to by many holiday homes for people to rent for the Christmas period. All of which plays a large part in the proceedings of our New Year’s day dip in the sea. Starting at the Kingsand Village Hall, where all those taking part array themselves in their fancy dress outfits to be judged as to which of them had won the various trophies and prizes. Then the procession makes it way down through the villages to gather on the beach, everyone quaking in their wet suits with the prospect of a chilly dip in the sea. The fun and spectacle of the event has been constant over the last 15 years or so and is still a firm favourite for all, young or not so young, and in many cases those who started doing the dip when they were young are still coming and some times bringing their own young ones along to enjoy the occasion. The Lions Club would like to thank in advance all those attending the day and helping to support us with their donations towards ours and all the other charities and good causes represented on the day. Have a great Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Entertainment all the way as town celebrates the festive season Torpoint Town Mayor Chris Goodman accompanied by Mayor’s Cadet of the year Buffy Taylor and Citizen of the Year Declan Kelf pressed the all-important switch to illuminate the town and Christmas tree lights on November 30. Entertainment went on throughout the afternoon and evening along with stalls, food outlets as well as local shops remaining open. There was Torpoint Town Band, various choirs including children from Torpoint nursery and infants school, while Carbeile Junior School acted out a nativity in the Cornerstone Church. Santa turned up to the delight of all the children as the lights went on and then he proceeded to the Library Hub where children visited him in his Grotto. A great time full of Christmas cheer was had by all and a big thanks must go to all the hard work that went on to make it so magical. Well done to all the volunteers and helpers who made the event such a success.

10 January 2020 Through Cawsand then Kingsand, the children’s Christmas lanterns procession wound its way to the Maker with Rame Community Hall in Kingsand, for the switching-on of all the Christmas Lights. Before the big switch on, children enjoyed a snow machine on the Hall lawn. Meanwhile each child was given a numbered draw-ticket, and a draw decided two winners, five year old Alfie and Elsie, agedc six, to actually switch on the Christmas Lights. They are pictured with Gary Farrar, who headed up the lighting team, ably assisted by his wife Laura. Gary and the team, who tested and erected the lights that extend all the way through both Cawsand and Kingsand. Inside the Community Hall, the evening was spent singing carols, eating mince pies and drinking a very special brew of mulled wine. The event is organised annually by the Hall Management Committee, who provide the food and drink as thanks for the support the hall receives from the villagers throughout the year. The mulled wine is brewed from a secret recipe handed down to Stephen and Pam Michael by Sir John Grey, and prepared several weeks in advance, with 36 bottles of red wine and three bottles of brandy, added by ‘brewer’ Pam Michael. The mince pies were kindly donated by the Kirsty and Greg, the new owners of Kingsand Village Store.

Mayor’s Message
From Chris Goodman Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year and trust you have a wonderful Christmas. Dreckly’s Café within Torpoint Library and Community Hub is being run by the staff and volunteers, if you would like to volunteer any spare time in the café or Library please contact them by email at comhub@ torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk. On Saturday November 23 Chris and I attended the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies Winter Festival held at Torpoint Community College. Representatives from Old Cornwall Societies attended from the length and breadth of Cornwall and beyond including The London Old Cornwall Society. Some of the representatives from the villages and towns of Cornwall had not visited Torpoint previously and were extremely impressed by the presentation from Rosemary Pellew of the Torpoint Archives recounting the history of Torpoint. This presentation was expertly crafted by Rosemary. There were performances by poets, musicians and singers which made for a varied, interesting and, in parts, humorous reflection of ‘Old Cornwall’. I should like to congratulate the Torpoint Branch of the Old Cornwall Society for hosting such a successful event. Wednesday November 27 saw the judging of the Best Dressed Torpoint Christmas Window. The number of
entries was up on last year and the quality of entries was impressive. Judging was not an easy task. Such was the quality of the displays that there were only four points between the first three places. First place was awarded to The Portal and in second
Elsie and Alfie with Gary Farrar
place, The Emporium. Gaining equal third place were Town Fryer and The Nail Shack. Thank you to all those Torpoint traders for the time and effort put into creating these wonderful displays at what is a very busy time of year. I am sure we all agree the town is looking very festive. Saturday November 30 marked the opening of the very successful, and well supported, Christmas Tree Festival and craft fayre at St James Church. I hope that you found time to view the entries and cast your vote, as much thought and effort was made by all the entrants. In the evening it was the eagerly awaited Torpoint Christmas Lights Switch On. Lantern makers of all ages paraded along Fore Street holding their lanterns aloft for all to see. A huge queue of children and families waited to meet Father Christmas at the Library and Community Hub. Thank you to all of you who supported this event as it was certainly a cold evening. I have forwarded my thanks, on your behalf, to the members of the Torpoint Town Partnership and everyone involved in making it such an enjoyable community event. On Thursday December 5 I hosted the Volunteering Event at the Community Hub and Library. The community groups that attended were The Torpoint and Rame Lions, Community Health Around Torpoint (CHAT), The Torpoint & Rame Community Sports Centre, Torpoint Rainbows, Torpoint Girlguiding, Torpoint Volunteer Exchange (TVE), the Friends of Thanckes Park, Torpoint Archives and Torpoint Community Hub and Library. Also in attendance were Citizens Advice (Liskeard Branch). We were advised, that if Torpoint could enlist two volunteers there would be the possibility the Citizens Advice service might resume in Torpoint. This volunteering event was well supported by community groups who had the unexpected opportunity to network with each other, but also by many Torpoint residents who were new to the area and wanting to immerse themselves in community life. If you were unable to attend this event or, on reflection, you would like to learn more about community volunteering please do not hesitate to contact me via email at chris.goodman@torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk. We would be very excited to hear from anyone who might be able to support the prospect of supporting a Citizens Advice service in Torpoint.

Adults in Plymouth succeed through lifelong learning Each year On Course South West welcomes over 1000 new adult learners, helping people to achieve a variety of personal development goals. Local learners enjoy studying and retraining for lots of different reasons, from taking part in creative activities, to studying for career training, improving their health and wellbeing and much more. Plymothian Lee is just one example of an adult learner who recently succeeded by retaking her GCSE’s. She told us what this meant to her: “I didn’t do well in school and got really bad grades, so I knew I needed maths to progress. I did functional skills first and once I achieved those, I was ready to start a GCSE. I’ve always had an interest in science, astronomy and cosmology and I knew I wanted a career in that. Passing my GCSE made me feel super chuffed and means I can now go on to study an access course for university.” Lifelong learning plays a big role in the development of communities throughout the city and On Course is passionate about developing skills in adults to support the economic growth and wellbeing of all Plymouth’s communities. This is, in large part due to the inspiration, talent and dedication of the tutors. Counselling tutor Sue explains the process of learning and why she thinks this is so important. “It’s about giving people strategies to improve the quality of their relationships in work and life. I’ve taught learners from many backgrounds, from social workers to customer services, police and even HR managers. I found that learning really does have the potential to change people’s lives.” Whether it’s an art or language class in a community centre, an IT beginners’ workshop in retirement accommodation, or helping families with their maths, writing or communication, On Course and their partners work tirelessly to support people in communities to achieve their goals. As well as working with adults to develop their careers or to help those looking for work, On Course also works with adults to help them with their families, during their retirement, encouraging their hobbies, improving their social lives and helping people to learn something completely new. Manager Joanna Dennison feels this service is vital for the priorities of the city. “We believe local people deserve learning and teaching that is trusted, welcoming and delivered to the highest quality. We feel privileged that our learners choose us to develop their skills and hopes. Everyone comes to us for a different reason and we’re very proud that 99.8% of our learners say they would recommend us to others.” Plymouth City Council offers a range of courses to support adult learners with their adult learner service, On Course South West. Adults in and around Plymouth can choose to learn shorter or longer courses; online and classroom-based; at varying times through the day and night. Want to talk about your learning? Contact the friendly On Course team by phone, 01752 660713, online www.oncoursesouthwest.co.uk or visit them at Hyde Park House, Mutley Plain, Plymouth. PL4 6LF

College Christmas treat for senior citizens The wet and windy weather didn’t deter the senior citizens from Torpoint and Rame going along to Torpoint Community College’s annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas Lunch. A traditional Christmas lunch, served by staff and students, followed by some excellent festive entertainment ensured the guests had a really enjoyable time and they certainly got into the Christmas spirit. The college’s Headteacher, Dr Jeremy Plumb, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome our local senior citizens to the college to enjoy a Christmas lunch and some festive entertainment by our very talented young people. “I am always impressed at how our students interact so positively with the guests that we have in the college, and we really enjoy being able to support our local community with events such as this.”

Bravery awards for Plymouth-based sailors Two sailors from Plymouth frigate HMS Argyll have been recognised for their bravery in saving all 27 crew of a blazing transporter ship in the Bay of Biscay.
Leading Seaman David Groves - who is serving at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint - and Able Seaman Alex Harvey spent at least four hours in towering seas as they struggled to rescue every man aboard stricken car/container ship Grande America in March. The frigate – on her way home to Plymouth after nine months away in the Asia-Pacific region – responded to a mayday from the 28,000-tonne merchant ship about 150 miles southwest of Brest. Despite a swell of six to seven metres – at the absolute limit of safe boat operations – the two sailors volunteered to enter the water in their eight-metre-long craft and attempt to save the Grande America’s crew. “One minute you could see a ship on fire, the next it was hidden by a wall of water. And the closer we got, the more engulfed we were in the

smoke,” said 29-year-old David, from Taunton. Alex added: “It was rough – very rough and as we got near to the ship, it turned out to be a lot worse than we’d imagined it.” When the pair reached the merchant ship they faced a lengthy wait as the crew struggled to launch the lifeboat – the Grande America’s high side and rough weather ruled out climbing down the ladder and into Argyll’s boat. When the lifeboat eventually launched, it hit the water with such force that it left the vessel impossible to manoeuvre. Nevertheless, David managed to bring his boat nose-to-nose with the lifeboat. With Alex on the bow judging the right moment as the two craft moved up and down, four of the merchant crew jumped from a small hatch into Argyll’s boat. “When the first guy jumped I had to grab him to prevent him going overboard. I thought to myself:
This is a bit hairy,” said the 25-year-old from Hull. Next the pair tried towing the lifeboat, but the line parted in the heavy sea. Finally they decided on nudging the boat towards the frigate ‘like a bumper car, or pinball’ said David. It took an interminable amount of time to ‘bump’ the lifeboat the half mile to HMS Argyll – and then they had to pin it against the frigate’s side so the Grande America’s crew could climb the scrambling net if they had the strength – or be hauled up in a hoist. “They were cold, tired, suffering from the effects of fire, smoke, shock and they’d been bobbing around in the sea for a couple of hours – they were exhausted,” added David. He received the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for his actions on the night of March 10-11; Alex, who has joined new patrol ship HMS Trent in Glasgow as her boat’s coxswain, will be presented with the Queen’s
Commendation for Bravery. “We could have called the rescue off given the conditions – but why would we when there are lives at stake,” said Alex, who’s been in the Royal Navy for five years. “It was absolutely a worthwhile experience, something to be proud of and a good way to finish our deployment, but I never thought an award would come out of it. It’s a bit surreal.” David, who’s due to tie the knot with his fiancée Leanne Barratt in September, has previous experience of rescues – a sunken fishing boat in the Channel and saving migrants in the Mediterranean while serving aboard HMS Enterprise. “It is always good to be recognised for the work you do, but at the end of the day this is what we’re trained for. That all kicked in on the night,” he added. “We saw the crew the next day and they were really grateful for what we’d done for them. That was as much recognition as we’d expected.”

Popular Christmas Fayre
Mount Edgcumbe’s Christmas Fayre on December 7 and 8 proved as popular as ever. There was something for everyone and all ages. Food stalls served dishes from around the globe while cooking demonstrations caught the imagination of all. Meanwhile a visit to Santa in his grotto pleased all the children who went to see him and told him of their Christmas present requests. Choirs entertained all day long with many favourite seasonal songs. On Sunday the weather was against the event so a decision was taken to close earlier than planned, but it did not deter everyone that made the effort to visit the festive event. Well done to all the volunteers who work so hard for the event to be so pleasant for all.
Listening is such a special gift... How does it feel when a person is clearly not interested in listening to another during a social gathering? The individual’s eyes glaze over and they appear to be much more interested in glancing over the shoulder at someone else who looks potentially more interesting. It can be very demoralising and dismissive, bordering on rejection. The social gathering can feel that it is going downhill very fast. In our society, being present with the moment has become increasingly difficult to do. It often means that we are not engaging with the person or situation which presents itself before us. People are usually rushing on to the next event or restlessly searching for new experiences which will feed their soul’s taste for excitement and freshly caught diversions.
Often people skim over life like a flat stone scudding across the water at surface level only. Add to this superficial state of being, the demands of mobile phones, it can make face to face encounters surplus to requirement. People long to be valued and listening to someone is like a special gift. It may be surprising to learn that selfawareness is a vital part of listening to another. How does the person listen? Are they interested, focused, or self- absorbed and uncaring? Does the listener give time and space to the individual who is talking? Using open questions can encourage someone to open up, conversely; using too many words can close someone down. Positive feedback is also essential for selfawareness, especially when given by someone who can be trusted.

When we reflect upon the way Jesus encountered people throughout the Gospels, it can teach us so much about how to value individuals in need. He was the perfect counsellor and he had complete attention for what was and was not said when he encountered people. In John’s Gospel (4: 1-42) Jesus met a woman at a well who had come out in the blazing heat of midday because she wanted to avoid people from her town. Jesus allowed the conversation to go to the very spiritual depths and by using many open questions he drew out from her that she had a belly full of broken relationships. Through gentle clarity, Jesus helped the woman to receive healing from him and hope for the future. He shared deep truths with her and she was convinced to tell the townsfolk that she had met her Messiah.
