NEW YORK, NEW YORK
Direct from the success of the runway launch in New York, Johanna Johnson’s ‘Muse’ collection is now available. Her latest designs are inspired by the Art Deco architecture of New York City, so it was only fitting that this opulent collection was shot and launched on the streets of her ‘muse’. Johanna describes the collection as being reminiscent of the silver screen age of New York and much of her inspiration was drawn from the city’s buildings; from the elegance of the Chrysler Building to the Empire State Building. The collection is built on the construction of embellished beaded designs, panelled silks, detailed French lace and reflective metallic silhouettes. www.johannajohnson.com

PROFILE
Charlotte Balbier is one of the UK’s most talented and successful bridal designers and as a recent bride herself, we thought it would be a good idea to catch up with her. She took time from her busy schedule to chat with Cornish Brides.
What drove you to become a bridal designer? I am a third generation bridal designer in our family. I was born into bridal heritage with both my grandparents being in bridal design, manufacturing and retail. They had several bridal boutiques across the UK and a manufacturing business that supplied independent boutiques both in the UK and abroad. My Mum is the award-winning bridal designer Amanda Wyatt, who is celebrating 20 years at the forefront of British bridal with her own brand Amanda Wyatt. So, bridal has been a family business and it still is; even my grandfather still works in the industry. But I’ve also been driven by my own aims over the 10 years I have been a designer. I wanted to create fresh and exciting designs that still remain true to the brand identity and that are instantly recognisable as a ‘’Charlotte Balbier’. I have achieved this and grown and evolved the brand from scratch in 2003 to now, in 2014, being one of the UK’s best known and loved British bridal brands with over 50 stockists nationwide. What do you love most about designing wedding gowns? As a bridal designer, you are part of one of the biggest days of a girl’s life! So it’s a rewarding job making brides feel special and happy. I am a big social networker on Twitter and Facebook with all my brides and I am one of only a few bridal designers to have such a personal connection with their brides. I am personally in touch with a great number of them and love listening to all the feedback they give me on my designs. Having this personal contact with my brides makes the job even more rewarding! Where do you find your inspiration for new collections? Everywhere and anywhere, every day brings new inspiration and ideas. I love to take myself away with my dog Buster for a long walk whilst mulling over ideas and taking in the countryside. I am also addicted to Pinterest and love to follow all kinds of lifestyle, fashion and wedding boards. My biggest passion is high fashion and haute couture and I love to keep an eye on all the latest collections from my favourite designers. Do you spend as much time designing as you would like or do you get 'bogged down' with running your business? I have a good balance, there are so many things to do when running your own business but I do have time to let my creativity flow! I have a great team around me to help with logistics and I always make extra time ahead of the new seasons for design time. Being a designer, I am constantly looking for new ideas and inspiration and time-management is important. Who are your main influences within the bridal industry? I have always had huge respect for Jenny Packham, not only are Jenny’s designs beautiful, but she has developed her brand to a global level. Also, obviously, my Mum has had a huge influence on me. What is a typical day (if there is such a thing)? Everyday can be different, which is what makes it all exciting! This week is really busy and varied as I am holding interviews for a sales position within the company which is very exciting. I have a lunch date with a magazine to review our advertising. A stylist we work closely with is popping in to select some Red Carpet gowns for a celebrity client and the rest of the week will be the usual mix of crazy and busy days designing gowns, sourcing new fabrics and working on new ideas .. oh yes, and dealing with my never-ending inbox of emails!
What do you do when you are not working? I love to spend time with my friends and family. Dinner and drinks with the girls, having friends round for dinner, cooking a big Sunday roast for all the family. I also love long walks, reading and yoga. On the rare occasion I cane get a week or so off, I love to fly off to New York for an exciting city break or to Ibiza for a beach side chill-out. Has the bridal industry changed much since you became involved in it? There are more bridal designers entering the market place. I have also noticed that brides no longer want to pay £5,000+ for a designer gown when they can buy a designer gown for £1,500 to £3,000. Charlotte Balbier has great price point for brides who want to look their best, super stylish and without the designer label price tag! Where do you see you brand going in the future? I am now embarking on a new chapter and looking forward to another 10 years and more staying at the forefront of British bridal and looking to also take the Balbier brand international. What is your long-time career goal? We’d love the Charlotte Balbier name to be around for generations. We’re constantly keen to grow and expand and we’ve also created a Charlotte Balbier evening and dress-wear line, so watch this space, you’ll be seeing a lot more from us in the future. We’re always keen for more brides to know about the Charlotte Balbier brand. As a recent bride yourself, what advice would you give to other brides just starting out on their wedding journey? Keep an open mind. It’s good to use magazines like Cornish Brides and to look online for inspiration, but when you go for bridal appointments at the boutiques, listen to what the sales advisors suggest as they are experts and 9 times out of 10, they will suggest a dress that turns out to be ‘the one’. Any plans to visit Cornwall any time soon? I have only been to Cornwall once and I fell in love’ it’s a beautiful county; so I think a trip in 2014 is a must!

When Ruth was looking for shoes for her own wedding, she found the task quite daunting and was concerned that she was going to have to compromise her sense of style. DAVID FIELDEN David Fielden is internationally renowned for his innovative designer bridal and evening wear. Stocked in many of the world's shops as well as his new contemporary flagship store in Chelsea's fashionable Fulham Road, David trained as a theatre designer and also as a dancer and choreographer, winning many international awards. His progression from dance came when he inherited a wonderful vintage collection and started to incorporate antique lace in his bridal designs. He then introduced evening wear and immediately attracted the world's leading shops and press, which garnered a following of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Julia Roberts, Bette Midler, Bianca Jagger and many more. Fast forward to today, David is still the designer of choice for international press and many celebrities including Amanda Holden, Kate Moss, Myleene Klass, Sheridan Smith, Kelly Osbourne and Patsy Palmer. His philosophy has never wavered in his desire to create contemporary and exciting dresses which also flatter and have a romantic edge. His 2014 collection is based on an ‘edgy romance’, with dresses taking on a softer turn, yet maintaining their distinctive simple, modern shapes. The result is a collection best described as contemporary, romantic and directional. www.davidfielden.co.uk

WHAT MEMORIES ARE MADE OF
Cornish Brides Awards Finalist, Silver Memories, has launched a chic new range of personalised silver cufflinks - perfect for the groom’s party. The company recently worked in secret with a bride-to-be who wanted a special gift for her groom. A pure silver cast of her son’s fingerprints was taken by the talented design team, which was then fixed to a pair of quality sterling cufflinks. The delighted bride left the beautifully gift-wrapped cufflinks on her fiancé’s pillow on the eve of their wedding, with a note explaining exactly what they were. The groom couldn’t have been happier as he proudly wore his new - and totally unique - cufflinks on his wedding day! CREATING A CLASSICAL ATMOSPHERE Cellists Danielle Jones and Coralie Ward’s shared enthusiasm for the beautiful sound of two cellos led to their decision to form the duo, Cello Cornwall. Often described as the instrument ‘closest to the human voice’, the cello has a rich, warm sound and is a versatile instrument, both mellow and vibrant, which lends itself to a wide and varied repertoire. A cello duo is a beautiful alternative to a string quartet and Cello Cornwall can offer a bespoke musical accompaniment for your wedding or special event, adding atmosphere to your ceremony. www.cellocornwall.co.uk

#CornishBrides Love them or hate them, hashtags are now a common feature of our online lives. Hashtags were quickly adopted by Twitter users en masse and have now become a standard across the web. On the offchance you don’t know what a hashtag is, it’s a ‘tag’ created by putting a # sign in front of something that you want to be searchable. By doing this, you turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your tweets and posts. Cornish Brides have adopted three hashtags to help you stay connected with us across Facebook and Twitter. #CBMag - for all the latest on the new editions of Cornish Brides Magazine; #CBShow allowing you to stay informed on dates and exhibitors at each Cornish Brides Show and #CBAwards - where you can find out who’s the best bridal businesses are in Cornwall. TAKE THE
PLUNGE! There are never enough hours in the day to achieve everything and when it comes to organising your wedding, time really is of the essence. Cornish Brides Editor-inChief, Janice Robinson, offers some helpful advice to brides-to-be on how to best manage their time.
As soon as you announce your engagement, you will find that everyone you know has something to say on the matter. Every friend and family member who is already married will be all too willing to offer you the benefit of their own experiences and their advice will differ greatly depending on when and where they got married. Now there’s nothing wrong with listening to and even taking advice from other people, just so long as you keep in mind that the wedding industry is always evolving and every person has their own individual sense of style. Budgets also play a big part in your wedding preparations and again, couples’ budgets vary hugely, so don’t let yourself get too bogged down with other peoples’ weddings. Your wedding will be as individual and unique as you are and that’s exactly how it should be. However, that said, there are a couple of things you should be aware of and the first and perhaps, most important thing, is that the wedding industry is not in any kind of decline, despite what you might hear on the news or read about in the papers from time to time. Yes, the country (indeed the world) is in something of a recession and it is true that many people are finding times hard and, as a result, are tightening their belts a little. But the wedding industry is buoyant; couples are still getting married and demand for the products and services available within the wedding industry is still high. I have heard a lot in recent months about how ‘quiet’ the industry was last year and how the number of weddings taking place was down on previous years and, don’t get me wrong, I am not disputing that for a moment. But let’s take a step back here and examine the facts. As we’ve already established, some people are being a little more wary at the moment, due to a whole variety of reasons and many couples are taking longer to save for their wedding, especially those who don’t want to incur excessive debt in the current economic climate. There is, however, another reason why the number of weddings were down
slightly - and I do mean slightly - in 2013 and the clue is right there in the year. Believe it or not, an awful lot of brides (and, no doubt, grooms) are superstitious and we have heard from a lot of couples who simply did not want to get married in 2013. Many of these brought their plans forward and exchanged their vows in the latter part of 2012 and many have delayed their wedding for a year or so, which has seen quite a surge in the number of weddings taking place this year. Yes, bookings are definitely up for 2014 and superstition has a lot to do with it. Now the point of this is that we have seen a lot of brides coming to our Cornish Brides Shows in the last 12 months who have been, shall we say, a little complacent, blasé even about booking suppliers for their 2014 and 2015 weddings and the reason for this appears to be that many of these brides believe that the wedding industry is in a bit of a lull and that there are bargains to be had if they leave it later to book. In some instances, that may well prove to be true, but what we are seeing is that many brides are now being disappointed because their preferred supplier is already booked and they are having to either look elsewhere or make quite significant compromises. I’m a great believer in getting the absolute best value for money and personally, I see nothing wrong with negotiating with a supplier. But instead of leaving it until the last minute to book, why not ask your preferred supplier if they will accept a smaller or deferred deposit or see if you can negotiate a discount if you book and pay early, rather than waiting until later. Alternatively, see if they will throw in a little something extra if you book in advance; perhaps, in the case of your photographer, an extra set of images or a better deal on any additional prints you order or even a complimentary framed photograph of your choice. In the case of your florist, how about asking for a dozen complimentary buttonholes if you confirm your booking for bouquets or, from your cake-maker some additional bite-sized cupcakes that
you could use as favours? You can even try this with your chosen venue and see whether they would agree to a complimentary dinner for you and your fiancé in the run-up to the big day, so you can enjoy a nice romantic meal together before the wedding; some might even offer you an overnight stay if you agree to foot the bill for any wine or drinks taken with your meal. There are already good deals to be had within the bridal industry if you know where to look. For example, if you are prepared to get married outside the busy Spring/Summer season or if you don’t mind getting married on a weekday as opposed to a popular Saturday, then many companies will offer special rates. It’s always worth asking and as long as you don’t ask for the earth, you will find that most suppliers are open to a bit of negotiation along the way. Remember, negotiation does not necessarily mean discount; try to think outside the box a little. Of course, we all love a bargain and no-one is going to blame you for thinking that a late booking will automatically result in the best deal. The reality, however, is not quite like that as most reputable bridal businesses get booked up well in advance and don’t, therefore, have a great deal of late availability to offer. More often than not, these tactics can back-fire because for every couple who is happy to take the risk and wait it out, there are three couples who are simply not prepared to gamble with their wedding day preparations and will get right in there and book. It all comes down to what you want and whether you can be flexible, but if you’ve set your heart on say, a particular venue or photographer, then take my advice and get that booking confirmed. Something else we hear quite a lot is that many of you brides-to-be seem to have a rather blasé attitude when it comes to buying your dress. So, can I please have a quiet word? Buying a wedding dress is completely different to popping into town on a Saturday afternoon to buy a new pair of jeans or a jumper. The two are poles apart and whilst I am not disputing that some brides-to-be may get lucky and find their perfect dress in their first outing, that is not the norm. You also need to bear in mind that there can be quite lengthy lead times for a bridal boutique to order and receive your dress from the supplier. Then there are alterations to take into account, which can add weeks to the process, especially if you are getting married in Spring or Summer, which are always going to be the busiest times for bridal boutiques and suppliers.
If possible, start looking for your dress 9-12 months ahead of your wedding. I know that might sound ridiculous, but I did say ‘start looking’, I didn’t say ‘buy’. The reason for this is that there is an incredible amount of choice out there and don’t forget, designers generally bring out two collections each year, so there are always new designs coming along. You need to get a good feel for what is available and, more importantly, what suits you and what you are going to feel most comfortable and beautiful in. Remember, one bride, one dress, one day - you are not going to get a second bite of this cherry, so you must get it right. It is always best to visit several bridal shops and you should take advantage of the knowledge and expertise of the staff in each store. Try on as many gowns as you like and never allow yourself to be pushed into making a purchase that you are not entirely happy with. Another thing you must bear in mind is that bridal shops simply cannot stock every single gown in every single size; again, this is not high street shopping and it is highly likely that some gowns will need to be ordered in. As for making that all important decision, you really should order your dress within 3-6 months of your wedding day, to ensure delivery and alterations can all be completed in a timely fashion. This eliminates stress and anxiety, which is the last thing you want as the big day approaches. Of course, it may be that you only have a short period of time between making the decision to get married and the day itself, in which case, you will find that Cornish bridal suppliers really will bend over backwards to help you get everything arranged and achieved and many bridal boutiques will have sales at certain times of the year. But if you have the time, then please use it wisely. So, to re-cap; the important thing to bear in mind is that it is never too early to book the things that mean a lot to you and which are absolute must-haves for your wedding. Please don’t leave everything until the last minute unless you are incredibly laid-back, have nerves of steel or are extremely flexible. Good suppliers are taking bookings now for 2015, so if there is something you have been holding off booking, just stop and think for a minute and if it is important to you, get out there and book it now!

The Evolution of
Marriage
There have been many notable landmarks in the history of marriage and perhaps one of the most significant is also the most recent. Last year, legislation was passed to allow the marriage of same sex couples and whilst it was initially thought the new law would not come into effect until the summer, the first same sex marriages can, in fact, take place from March 29, 2014 after the Coaliton brought the date forward in time for an Easter ‘wedding rush’. Any same sex couple wishing to be amongst the first to exercise their right to marry, will need to give formal notice of their intention by March 13, although you have slightly longer if you would prefer an Easter wedding, with Good Friday falling on April 18 this year. The new legislation will also grant any couple who are currently registered in a Civil Partnership or any couple who married under foreign law, the ability to convert that partnership into a marriage. Under the terms of the Bill, which gained Royal Assent on July 17, religious organisations will have to ‘opt in’ to offering same sex weddings. However, as the Churches of England and Wales have stated that they do not wish to conduct same-sex marriages, the legislation will explicitly state that it would be illegal for them to marry same-sex couples. A report commissioned by the Church of England has, nonetheless, proposed that members of the clergy should be allowed to offer blessing ceremonies to same sex couples. The Changing Face of Modern Marriage In Anglo Saxon times, marriage was seen as a strategic tool to establish diplomatic and trade ties. There was no formal marriage ceremony and no consent was required from the ‘bride’ who was simply told by her father that she would be entering into a relationship that would benefit her family.
During the 11th century, marriage was more about securing a political or economic advantage and again, arrangements were loose and mainly put into place by the family elders. The first significant landmark came in the 16th century when Thomas Cranmer, the architect of English Protestantism, laid out the purpose of marriage and scripted modern wedding vows in his Book of Prayer, which was completed in 1549. Although the book was revised in 1552 and 1662, the basis of the marriage service as we know it, including ‘to have and to hold’, ‘for richer, for poorer’ and ‘for better, for worse’, were set out some 465 years ago. In 1670, Parliament passed an Act allowing John Manners, Lord Roos to divorce his wife, Lady Anne Pierpont, which created a precedent for parliamentary divorces to be granted on the grounds of a wife’s adultery and, in effect, this marked the beginning of the modern day divorce. The Clandestine Marriage Act of 1753 saw the beginning of the state’s involvement in marriage, requiring couples to be married by a Minister in either a church or a chapel, although this changed 110 years later with The Marriage Act of 1863, which allowed for non-religious Civil Ceremonies to be held in a Register Office. In 1929, Parliament raised the legal age of marriage to 16, where it remains to this day, although anyone under the age of 18 requires parental consent to marry in England. In December 2005, Parliament passed the Civil Partnership Act allowing same sex couples to take part in a Civil Partnership, effectively affording them the same rights and responsibilities as a ‘married couple’ and now here we are in 2014 with, perhaps, the biggest and most significant landmark of all about to alter the constitution of marriage forever.

PIZZA ON THE MOVE A local pizza company has just announced that it is launching a mobile wedding catering business. Jon and Vicki Crwys-Williams, who own and operate The Cornish Pizza Company, based in St. Agnes, are no strangers to success having won Best Local Food Takeaway in the South West in the Taste of the West 2013 Awards Programme and a Gold Award in the National Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Industry Awards. The awards reflect their high standards in both the food they offer and their friendly and professional customer service. So, it seemed a natural progression to take their award-winning pizzas ‘on the road’ and offer a quality mobile catering service. Nicknamed, The Colonel, their classic VW camper van has been kitted out with a state of the art, stone-based Italian oven and offers the same high quality thin crust pizzas that Jon and Vicki produce in-store with bases made from organic, unbleached flour, stretched to order and topped with quality Cornish ingredients before being flash cooked for a fresh, light and delicious taste. Toppings include Cornish cheeses such as Yarg, Cornish Blue and Tintagel, roasted vegetables and Cornish ham. Plus there are healthy options including a low fat pizza with homemade tomato sauce, semi-sundried tomatoes, black olives, fresh basil, capers and garlic. A mobile Pizza Van serving delicious fresh pizzas to your guests would be a unique and fun addition to your wedding and, for a limited period, The Cornish Pizza Company are offering a free tasting at their shop for any bride and groom who would like to try their award-winning pizzas ahead of making a wedding booking. www.thecornishpizzacompany.co.uk
SO MUCH MORE THAN BISCUITS
We first ‘discovered’ Biscuiteers when we received a press release from them shortly after the company was set-up in 2007 and we’ve been fans ever since. The success of the company has soared and their online store is massively successful with biscuit orders being despatched daily around the world. But, make no mistake, these are no ordinary biscuits; these are lovingly crafted, delicious biscuits which are then painstakingly iced by a talented team to reflect just about every occasion and they make absolutely wonderful wedding favours and gifts. And now the company produces beautiful chocolates and cakes as well, so a visit to their website is a mouth-watering occasion in itself. www.biscuiteers.com

BALLOONIN’ To win an award for what you do over two
consecutive years is pretty impressive, but to
then win another award for being the ‘best of the best’ is just amazing. Cornish Brides
Awards triple award-winners, Partini Balloons told us exactly what winning has meant to them. Here is their story ...
You were crowned Bridal Business of the Year at the recent Cornish Brides Awards, how did that feel? It felt absolutely amazing! We were so shocked to win that award, especially being up against so many brilliant businesses from across Cornwall. The competition was really tough, but it makes you so happy to know that the work and effort you put into someone's special day really makes a difference to them. You also won the Venue Styling of the Year award, for the second consecutive year. So, what sets you apart from your competitors? To win the venue styling award again was just fantastic as this is what we do best. I think the main point that sets us apart from our competitors is that we can really transform a venue and give the 'WOW' factor when our couples first walk into a room. We love to work with our brides and grooms to really create something special for their day. The Cornish Brides Awards recognises and rewards excellence, how important are they to your business? The Cornish Brides Awards are now firmly in our yearly plan as they are so great for our business, not only because of the exposure you get from reaching the finals or winning an award, but they really make you take a step back and help you realise where you could improve your business. We have made so many improvements to our business since we first entered two years ago, which is why we think we won our awards this year. What would you say to any other businesses considering entering the Cornish Brides Awards? Just go for it, you can only gain from the process of entering and if nothing else, it will make your business better. I can't stress enough how great it has been for us and more than anything, if you make it to the final, the Awards night is so much fun; it is amazing and definitely a date for the diary. What are your secrets to styling a venue? We don’t really have a secret, but we always think about our own wedding; how we felt and what we wanted from our special day and we try and pass that onto our couples. We want them to be able to have exactly what they want and most importantly, for the process to be stress free. We always try to give our customers confidence, so they don’t have to worry about anything and can simply enjoy their day. Are there any current or future trends for venue styling? There are many trends at the moment but we are finding all our brides are looking for something different, which in our line of work is brilliant as we can be really creative if given the opportunity. Vintage is definitely a popular trend at the moment and it’s a theme which balloons can really enhance and work well in. Do you have a favourite wedding you’ve styled? That is a very difficult question because every wedding we’ve styled is unique and has its own little quirks which makes them great. I can say though, that along our journey we have met some lovely people and made lots of friends.
What do you love most about your job? Working alongside my gorgeous wife Angie, and doing as I’m told! Meeting all the wonderful and interesting people in the Cornish wedding industry and most of all the feeling you get just knowing that you have contributed to making a couple’s wedding day one of the happiest of their life. Oh and lets not forget, sucking in the helium and talking in a high pitched voice is also a lot of fun! Do celebrity weddings have an influence on how brides want to style their own wedding? Most definitely and this isn’t just celebrity weddings these days; online blogs have a massive influence on what people want. How do you feel Cornwall compares to the rest of the UK bridal industry? I think Cornwall has some of the best and most diverse wedding suppliers in the country, so much so that we have even been asked to style venues as far afield as London. There is so much competition in Cornwall, you really do have to be on top of your game all the time. In your opinion what makes Cornwall such a special place to get married? We think Cornwall is an extremely beautiful county and has some wonderful wedding venues. There is so much choice, from beach weddings to country house estates and historic buildings and with the relaxed attitude of most of the people who live in Cornwall, it really is the ideal place to get married. Have publications such as Cornish Brides helped your business? Absolutely, without the support from Cornish Brides we wouldn’t have been able to meet lots of our potential customers. The Cornish Brides Shows at Kingsley Village have been an absolute must as part of our business plan as they give us the chance to meet couples before they even consider booking and to see our work on display. The shows are always well attended and Colin and Janice always make us feel welcome. They’ve been really supportive of our business and without this, I’m sure we wouldn’t be where we are today. If you’re serious about business, we would highly recommend any business to advertise with Cornish Brides magazine and to attend a Cornish Brides Show. Do you have any plans for the future you can share with Cornish Brides? We have lots of ideas on the go as we have to keep moving with the times and the ever-changing trends of weddings. There are lots of things in the pipeline and you can be sure that you’ll hear about it first in Cornish Brides magazine or see it first at a Cornish Brides Show. Any final thoughts? We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Cornish Brides as well as all the wedding suppliers we have made friends with and all our customers who have supported us over the years and made it possible for us to win these amazing Cornish Brides Awards. We are really looking forward to our next year of trading and to working with lots more lovely couples in 2014. www.partini.co.uk

e all have to work for a living, so if you are lucky enough to have a job that you truly love and enjoy, it is a real bonus. If you then work in an industry that actively promotes happiness, you know that you have chosen a good career path. But to top it all off, how amazing must it feel to know that your clients have a forum where they can openly and publicly sing your praises and ultimately, you can be the recipient of an industry award that will generate more business for you and make you even more successful and happy? For the answer, just ask any one of the thirteen lucky winners at the recent Cornish Brides Awards because they know exactly how that feels. Our 2013-14 Awards were launched last April and more than 220 bridal businesses entered. A staggering 5,000 votes were cast and 48 finalists were invited to join us at The Alverton, Truro for a glittering ceremony. The really great thing about the Cornish Brides Awards is that they are all voted for by brides - and grooms, of course - who have actually experienced the products and services offered by the businesses taking part. The competition this year was fierce and we knew from early on in the voting process that it was going to be a close-run thing. Mid-way through the year, we announced our 48 finalists and voting then continued until the end of October with many of the contested categories going right down to the wire. The evening itelf was spectacular and the Alverton’s Grand Hall was transformed into an elaborate and stunningly beautiful venue that was worthy of the Oscars themselves. Our 120 VIP guests had a ball and we just can’t wait to do it all again this year!

GET ME TO THE
CHURCHe ... m i t y r e ev Wedding invitations are a bit like buses. You wait ages for one to arrive and then three or four come along together. Cornish Brides ‘best friend’, Carley Wetting, shares more light-hearted bridal experiences.
It happens to the best of us and I’m afraid there is absolutely nothing you can do to avoid it or change it. One day, you are part of a happy-go-lucky group of young women, excitingly starting out on your chosen careers and generally living life to the full. The next day, you are sitting at home alone in the evenings with just your cat for company and a bottle of wine (one glass, of course). One by one, that happy group of girls has dwindled and in two shakes of a mascara brush, you are the only member of the group left. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not looking for sympathy here and, just for the record, I don’t actually have a cat, but the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of my girlfriends have progressed to being someone else’s girlfriend, fiancée and eventually wife and I am happy for them, honestly. It just makes you wonder ‘how did that happen’? To be fair, I am not the only one of our ‘little gang’ to remain unmarried, there are actually a couple of us left, clinging dearly to singledom, but it is true to say that I am the only one of an original group of very close friends who met at junior school and remained inseparable ever since. A couple of others have sort of ambled up along the way, some have stuck around, others were only passing through and there are a number of people I could - and do - call if I fancy a night out. Also, I should point out at this stage that it is not always me doing the calling. Quite a few people call me on a more than regular basis to enquire if I am up for a social event. Also, it’s not like I have not had my fair share of boyfriends over the years, but I can say with absolute certainty that not one of them ever really figured more than half way up my marriage radar. Most of the guys I
have dated have been ‘friends’, dinner companions - occasionally with dessert on the side and less occasionally with breakfast as an optional extra and I am not at all unhappy with the way things have panned out. I certainly don’t put myself in the ‘always a bridesmaid, never a bride’ category, but I don’t let it consume me either. Like most things in life, I just take it in my stride and leave it to fate; if it’s meant to be, it will be ... que sera sera (I’ve always loved Doris Day and no, please don’t read anything into that either). So, what has got me feeling a little melancholy as 2014 starts to take a hold? Let me think ... could it possibly have anything to do with the fact that in the last 6 weeks, I have actually received four wedding invitations? Um ... yep, I think that has possibly got something to do with it. Now I don’t know about you, but when I receive a wedding invitation, I am not automatically filled with a sense of excited anticipation. In fact, the opposite is usually the case. I firstly check who the happy couple are, then consider how well I know them, followed swiftly by whether I actually like them and finally, if there any remote possibility that I might have a previous engagement on the date in question - and not to another wedding, by the way. Perhaps that doesn’t sound very magnanimous of me and I am sure some of the more cynical among you may even think it reeks of sour grapes. But honesty, that isn’t the case, because I really do love a good wedding, so even I can’t explain what it is that makes my heart sink a little every time I rip open an envelope and a beautiful little hand-crafted invitation drops onto the table. In my defence, I have to say that the dread doesn’t last - well not unless I discover that it
actually is a couple I don’t like very much and then I have sleepless nights pondering how I can decline the invitation without my dislike for one or both of them becoming apparent. But that’s another story. So back to this one. There I was at home writing out my Christmas cards on December 18 - a little late, I know, but what can I say - I was never very organised at the best of times - when the postman dropped a small stack of mail through my letterbox. With the exception of what was clearly a gas bill, all the others looked like cards, Christmas cards I assumed, from family and friends who had managed to get their cards written and posted in a more timely fashion than I. So, I put them on the side to open later and that was when I discovered that one of my Christmas cards was, in fact, a wedding invitation. Now I have to admit that when I first read the names of the couple, I was at a bit of a loss and I even checked the envelope to ensure that I was, in fact, the correct recipient of this particular invitation. But then the penny dropped. Charlotte. Of course I knew Charlotte; not terribly well, I hasten to add, hence my initial confusion, but she was one of those girls I mentioned earlier, one who ‘just passed through’, but I definitely remembered her, although we hadn’t really kept in touch, so I didn’t give the matter a lot of thought as there were more important things to think about with Christmas just days away (sorry, Charlotte). Then in that strange week between Christmas and New Year, you know the one when you never quite know whether it’s a Bank Holiday or not, I received another wedding invitation. Again, I examined it closely and discovered that this one was from a couple, Jen and Ross, who I do know reasonably well, and although I knew they were together, I had no inkling that they were anywhere near the getting-wed stage - in fact, I couldn’t even remember an engagement! I was back at work in the new year when the third invitation arrived not by post, but by email and this one was not unexpected at all. It was from one of my ‘best’ friends and a fellow member of our original gang. It simply read: ‘So, Saturday, June 19. You know where. You better be there’. Not the most eloquent invitation to a wedding, I grant you, but as I say, it was something I had been expecting for a while and the delivery and terminology was a bit of an in-house joke amongst those of us who knew Lisa well. It brought a smile and allowed me to RSVP with a quick, ‘Yeah, I guess’. Job done - if only all invitations could be dealt with so swiftly and effortlessly. The fourth and final (for now) invitation arrived yesterday and to be honest, I feel as if I have already attended this wedding, seen the photos and got the T shirt. It is from my cousin, Alison, who is marrying her childhood sweetheart, Gary. They’ve been together forever, have a house, a mortgage, two cars and three children, but for reasons best known to themselves, they have decided to get married. Well, let me re-phrase that, Ali has decided to get married and Gary, being Gary, has decided that life will be far simpler if he just goes along with it. Now, please don’t mis-understand me, I adore Ali - we are the same age and, as cousins, we grew up together. We lived just a few doors along from each other, we went to school together, we played together. I also love Gary. He is probably the nicest, most easy-going and thoroughly generous man I know. My Mum and Ali’s Mum are sisters and they still live within walking distance of each other. Alison and Gary also live close-by,
so they all see quite a lot of each other. This wedding has been on the cards for the last 12 months, so every time I have seen or spoken to my Mum, I have heard all about ‘the wedding’, every single last detail, right down to the cake design, the colour of the flowers, the music for the church, the music for the reception, the music for the evening, the way Ali is wearing her hair and even the style of lingerie she has chosen. Let’s just say that nothing about this wedding is going to come as a surprise to me on the day! So, it looks like 2014 is going to be a busy year on the wedding front, which in practical terms, means it’s going to be an expensive year for me. Three of the four weddings I have been invited to will have some cross-over on the guest front, so that means I am going to have to buy at least three separate outfits - perish the thought that I be seen in the same outfit twice. Then there are the gifts I am going to have to buy and the cost of travel to and from the weddings and the overnight accommodation. You see, people just don’t think about this sort of thing when they include you on their guest list and when four couples, who are getting married within 3 months of each other, have decided that they just can’t get married unless I am there with them on the day, it leaves me seriously having to consider whether I should take out a second mortgage! And the worse thing is that I don’t think this is the end of it. I know of at least two other couples, who are booking weddings later this year, so I am pretty sure two more invitations will be winging their way to me soon. But why is 2014 such a popular year for weddings? I have a theory about this and it’s a theory I have arrived at after speaking to some people who have decided to tie the knot this year. And the problem doesn’t lie with 2014, it lies with 2013 and the simple fact that quite a number of brides decided that it would be unlucky to marry in 2013, so have deferred their weddings until this year. Strange, but possibly true! So, a word to anyone else who thinks that I would be an invaluable additional to their 2014 wedding guest list. I am very happy for you and wish you a truly wonderful day, but seriously ... I’m all weddinged out this year!

Queen of the Board
y r e l e w e j d r a o b e t a k s recycled
Cornwall has a thriving skateboard scene and one Cornish skater has taken her passion for both skating and recycling and combined them to create a unique and flourishing business. Working from her ‘Greenhouse’ studio in Falmouth, Nat Rigby reincarnates each scrap of wood from broken skateboards into stylish and unique homewares and fashion accessories for men and women. The concept for her company, Thrashion Ltd, came to her when she fell over a pile of old skateboards, which she and her husband were hoarding in their attic. “I've been passionate about recycling for years and started out making jewellery from vinyl records, but after tripping over our old skateboard decks, the idea of using them for jewellery and accessories seemed like the perfect progression”, Nat told Cornish Brides. This was back in 2007 and Nat’s first product was a simple bangle, but this has now expanded to her current product range, which includes accessories, bangles, belt buckles, cufflinks, dogtags, earrings, homewares, keyrings, necklaces and rings. Supplied with skateboard decks ridden and donated from friends, skateshops, skateparks, skate companies and pro-skaters, Thrashion has seen an amazing level of growth from selling locally to now having stockists across the UK, USA and New Zealand! Nat believes the secret of their success is their dedication to using every element of the deck, including the original graphics of the board. “Being skaters, we know that a skateboard is not just a toy; it holds history and has a huge amount of meaning to a skater from the start of its life until it eventually breaks. The beauty of our jewellery and accessories is in the thrashed state of the board as every scratch or ding is important and we take great care to produce high end products that befit the life of the broken board. All our items are one of a kind and unique and I think that makes them extremely special to our customers, especially future brides and grooms.” With an expanding customer base across the world, the future looks bright for Thrashion, but Nat Rigby is not one to rest on her laurels; "I think it’s definitely an asset to have a unique concept or selling point with your business but I’m always looking for more. We've recently been doing a lot of partnership projects, teaming up with other artists and companies to create something a little different to keep ahead of the game and to ensure we’re constantly evolving. I think this is another reason why Thrashion is so unique: We’re not scared to try something different; we’re always creating.” www.thrashion.com

SO, WHAT’S EXPECTED OF
YOU?
Without doubt, your wedding is one of the biggest and most important events of your life and you want it to be an occasion to remember for all the right reasons! The day, which will pass in whirlwind of excitement, is the culmination of months (sometimes years) of planning and it will make a significant dent in your finances - not to mention, at times, your sanity! Many grooms seem to think that having plucked up the courage to ask the question, they can then take a back seat and let their bride get on with the important business of planning the wedding. Wrong! OK, you can probably get away with some stuff, like the colours for the bridesmaids’ dresses, the flowers and the table settings, but in between popping the question and popping the Champagne corks after the ceremony, you do have a number of important responsibilities that you need to take seriously. The best thing for you and your fiancée to do is sit down and make a list because there is so much to plan and organise that it is extremely easy to forget, sometimes the most important things and let’s be honest, the sooner you get started, the more relaxed you will be when the big day finally arrives. One of the first things you should discuss is your budget and you really must be realistic. Don’t promise the earth if your finances won’t stretch that far and don’t be talked into unnecessary expenditure. Decide what is important to you both and plan accordingly. Traditionally, the bride’s father picks up the bill for the main event, with the groom paying for the church/register office fees and the all-important honeymoon. However, these days, arrangements are very loose and usually both families sit down together and work out who is going to pay for what or what contribution they can each make. Certainly as the groom you should be looking to foot the bill for the wedding rings, your own outfit and that of your best man, all church/register office expenses, the bride’s bouquet and the bridesmaids’ flowers, the transport, the wedding night accommodation and the honeymoon.
You may not be the star of this show, but as the groom you have a very important supporting role to play. Embrace it and put in the performance of your life.
It may well be that you have been saving for this wedding for quite some time, but you might also want to think about taking out insurance. This will cover you for many eventualities such as damage to the bride’s dress, theft of presents, cancellation of the reception and double booking of the venue. All unlikely, but if fate should deal you a glancing blow, any one of these events could potentially ruin your big day. There are a number of ways that you can look at saving money if your budget is tight. Firstly, you should only book services that you really want and need. For example, do you need a photographer and a videographer? Shop around for the best value as far as caterers, transport and photographers are concerned and get the deal that suits you. You might want to consider a weekday or winter wedding when prices are invariably lower. Consider whether you know anyone who could perhaps do your flowers or make your cake or perhaps make use of a friend or relative’s car if they have something suitable. There are lots of money-saving ideas, but don’t cut corners for the sake of it or if you think it will have a detrimental affect on your wedding. Getting a friend to take the photos might seem like a good way to save some cash, but if the photos are not up to scratch, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it after the event. Weigh everything up before making any decisions and be absolutely certain that you are doing the right thing. If you’re having a best man, remember it is his role to support you, not the other way around! Choose someone you can rely on - there is more to being a best man than just organising a boozy stag do. And whilst we’re on the subject, if you are having a stag party, get your timing right. Don’t do anything too close to the wedding day. Make sure everyone has plenty of time to get home and recover fully before the wedding celebrations get underway. Keep on top of things and have a pre-wedding check list so you can tick things off as you do them. Confirm any formal arrangements in writing and ensure you get written receipts and confirmations back for the services you are booking. Do your research and check-out the
businesses you are going to be relying on to give you the wedding of your dreams. Don’t be afraid to ask for references from previous clients and make sure all your requirements can be met in full. If you are in any doubt, check and double check and put it in writing again! Ideally the groom and the male members of the wedding party should dress in similar attire and it will fall on you to arrange this. Ensure you choose a style that will suit everyone, regardless of their shape and size. Keep everyone in the loop and make sure they are all aware of the dates of fittings. Co-ordinate your accessories and allow plenty of time to find the right accessories for your outfits, cufflinks, tie-pins, shoes and socks - keep the colours co-ordinated. Your bride will be working tirelessly to ensure that she looks her absolute best on the day and you should too. Adopt a fitness regime in the months leading up to the wedding and try to eat well. Stress can play havoc with your skin, so give yours the best chance possible by looking after yourself. And don’t forget your hair; book an appointment with your stylist well in advance to ensure it’s looking its best on the day. Help your bride with as many things as you can and try to keep her calm. You might feel as though you are under a lot of pressure, but that is nothing compared to what she is feeling, so be understanding and take as much pressure off her as possible. Do things together - it’s so much more fun that way and you can make it enjoyable and exciting, which is how it should be.

shoes - you are going to be on your feet a lot on your wedding day, so you need to choose your shoes carefully; ensure they fit well and are comfortable • accessorise well - choose the accessories you are going to need; cufflinks, watch, socks and underwear • go online - even if you’re not comfortable purchasing clothes online, do your homework about designers and retailers and check out the styles that are available at the time • your grooms-party - decide who is going to be a member of your grooms party; usually this is your bestman, your father, the father of the bride and any ushers you are having • keep costs in mind - if you are organising outfits for the whole group, set a realistic budget and do bear in mind that you will all be different heights and shapes, so pick a style that will look good on you all • micro-manage - make sure your grooms-party are on the ball; the last thing you need is for one or more of the party to miss a fitting or forget to pick up their suit on time • keep a schedule - make a note of important deadlines and allow an extra day or two for emergencies or mishaps; be prepared for all eventualities • tie that tie - if you don’t know how to tie a tie, there will never be a better - or more important - time to learn - ask your outfitter for expert advice • look your best - consider a proper skincare and fitness regime; book your hair appointment in advance and how about a simple manicure a day or two before the wedding - it will make your hands look good and keep your nails from catching on your suit - or more importantly, on your bride’s gown • enjoy the experience - your wedding day is one of the few times in your life where you’ll be looking fabulous in front of a large group of people and regardless of how daunting that might sound, you really should try and enjoy the day!

and finally ... 2014 FLORAL TRENDS As the new year gets underway, early indications for 2014 seem to be favouring a swing away from the pastel and vintage-style flowers favoured by brides over the last year or so towards more bright, bold and vibrant colours. Brightly coloured flowers add style and drama to any wedding and make a real statement about a bride and with this year’s wedding gown trend being all about the dramatic, now really is the time to think bright and bold!
So it looks as though 2014 is going to be a really busy ‘wedding’ year and we’re going to have our work cut out keeping up with all the wonderful and exciting things that will be happening on the bridal scene. As usual, we’ll be on the lookout for all the very latest news, gossip, trends and information from the world of weddings so we can keep you fully up-todate with everything. If you’re looking for inspiration, then you really can rely on Cornish Brides to deliver, so do make sure you come along to a couple of Cornish Brides Shows this year. Each show has a different set of exhibitors and there’s always something new and exciting to see. The next issue of Cornish Brides will be out at the end of April and will be our ‘bumper’ Summer issue with a fabulous White Gallery London feature. Once again, Cornish Brides will be in attendance at this spectacular show, which takes place in London in early April. We’ll have access to all the best bridal designers from around the world and we’ll have exclusive previews of their latest collections straight off the catwalk. It’s an issue you won’t want to miss!

A Final Word ... Your wedding day is the most important day of your life and we really cannot stress too strongly how important it is to consider taking out Wedding Insurance to safeguard against the unexpected. The recent fire at The Alverton, Truro demonstrates yet again how something totally beyond anyone’s control can potentially ruin a couple’s big day. Fortunately, this fire was relatively minor and no-one was hurt, but there was a wedding due to take place four days later! Don’t take chances with your wedding; there is too much at stake.
If you are going to be a 2014 bride, we would love to hear from you and if you need any assistance with anything, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team. We are always happy to help in any way we can, so just email us. We would also love you to take part in the Cornish Brides ‘I Do’ Survey which we will be conducting throughout this year as part of our continued commitment to bring you the very best bridal magazine and bridal shows. The survey will be aimed at brides who have already tied the knot and those who are still in the planning stages and full details will be announced on the Cornish Brides Facebook Page (facebook.com/cornish.brides) and in the next issue of Cornish Brides. It’s a simple survey and everyone who takes part will be entered into a fabulous prize draw. And, of course, there are this year’s Cornish Brides Awards to look forward to. Voting will open in April and we will be posting regular updates on our Social Media sites to ensure you’re kept fully up to date. So, for now, we will leave you to your wedding planning, but we look forward to seeing you at a Cornish Brides Show soon.
