NEWINGTON, Ontario – Rock climbing, midway rides, carnival games, unique local vendors, petting zoos, the demolition derby, live music, competitive softball and more are just some of the attractions that have drawn large numbers to the 2019 Stormont County Fair in Newington from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.

Secretary-Treasurer of the Fair BarbaraAnn Glaude said that this year local competitors will face off for the first time in a new addition to the fair: provincially sanctioned Extreme Cowboy Racing.

“Our beef show and dairy show were excellent on Saturday. Our kids have had great fun in the Kidzone…ball keeps on, we have the finals on (Monday, Sept. 2) for the modified and mens teams,” said Glaude.

Glaude thanked all volunteers and attendees of the 152-year-old Fair, saying it’s a monumental occasion in the area before school begins and fall ensues.

CORNWALL, Ontario – A lineup of over 1,500 spectators anxiously awaited entrance into the OHL Labour Day hockey game at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Monday, Sept. 2.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Back to school is here and St. Lawrence College is investing in the future of its students.

The college has new teachers and programs coming for the 2019-2020 school year and will also be providing bursaries to 140 students in Cornwall to the sum of $172,000.

The bursaries include he Joyce Family Foundation Ed Lumley Bursary which will support 12 Cornwall students for up to three years of their schooling.

“It is important to note that these bursaries and scholarships have been made possible through the generous support of members of the Cornwall community,” said Brianna Doyon, Communications Officer with St. Lawrence College.

Students at St. Lawrence College will also have the opportunity this year to take advantage of a new partnership program

with Saint Paul University in Ottawa. The program will allow graduates from seven programs to receive a Bachelors Degree two years sooner.

“We are grateful for this partnership with Saint Paul University, as it provides yet another important way for our students and graduates to continue on with their educational goals,” said SLC President and CEO, Glenn Vollebregt. “These ‘2 + 2’ pathways provide full recognition of the credits achieved at SLC and offer exceptional opportunities for students to further their education.”

Also new this year is an expansion of mental health services for students on all St. Lawrence College campuses.

St. Lawrence College promises that its new Student Wellness & Accessibility Services (formerly known as Counselling & AccessAbility Services) will provide a range of customized services and shorter wait times.

“I enjoy doing it, my daughter enjoys doing it.

We get to go outside together and she’s learning.

I find that she is quite gentle and she wants to hold the caterpillars; she loves letting the butterflies go. I think it’s good for her because it’s a different type of patience, learning and handling them with care, respecting them,” said Katie. “It’s still a process of learning and it has turned into a fun little family project.”

Katie shared a recent memory of a butterfly

floating up and landing on Emma’s head upon being released, which she had a good laugh at and wanted to see happen again.

“That’s part of why we started doing it. It just makes her so happy — she’s got butterflies,” said Katie.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Emma Andrews, who is only 3-years-old, picked a tomato in her garden last summer with a monarch butterfly chrysalis attached to it. Mother Katie Andrews helped her daughter transfer the metamorphosing bug, allowing it to safely emerge and fly away. This summer, the pair have made it their hobby together to help the monarch caterpillars in their transformation.

“My daughter, she loved it — seeing the process. I thought, it would be really neat if we could find a caterpillar and see the whole thing,” said Katie, remembering back to her daughter’s first reaction.

Last fall, the pair ran through their field adjacent to their family’s business, Summer Heights Golf Course, and shook out milkweed pods in hopes of spreading more of the plant.

“I’ve never seen so much milkweed grow so fast,” said Katie, aghast at the sudden biodiversity.

“I’ve seen so many other butterflies, bumble bees…grasshoppers in the field.”

Sure enough, the duo found a caterpillar on a milkweed plant just outside of their door at the beginning of the summer. After taking it inside, they quickly realized they needed more of the plant to feed it, and when they went foraging for

its dinner, they stumbled upon two more caterpillars, who moved in moments later.

From there, the project grew and transformed much like the butterflies themselves. Katie began researching different structures to keep the insects inside of, soon creating her own makeshift Caterpillar Condo, where she keeps detailed notes about how many creatures take up residence. To date, about 80 caterpillars have been taken inside this summer and about 15 butterflies have been released in what they denote at Mable’s Meadow. Named after original owner of the land Mable Clark, Katie has signified the field between her house and the golf course in her honour.

“It’s this accidental thing that happened on her property,” said Katie with a chuckle. “I know if she was here she would love it that I have my daughter running around in the field with butterflies; it’s just such a joy, so I named it after her.”

Throughout her research on the creatures, Katie soon discovered Monarch Watch, a network of individuals dedicated to the study of Monarch Butterflies. Through the organization, Katie registered Mable’s Meadow as an official Monarch Waystation and obtained butterfly tags. Katie has carefully placed a small tag on almost every butterfly’s delicate wing that has passed through her Caterpillar Condo, in hopes that their number will appear on the organization’s website having reached another point in the world during migration south. Katie has also registered the property a part of Monarchs in the Rough, which promotes butterfly conservation in partnership with golf courses.

“Golf courses have so much land and out of play areas…if you don’t cut them, things like milkweed and wildflower will grow,” said Katie, who explained that many people might not realize that staff take into account biodiversity when maintaining courses.

The project has received a lot of buzz on social media, with people continually inquiring about Katie and Emma’s butterflies, or presenting questions on how to get started with a similar initiative. Katie has spoken to member of the public twice during the month of August, once with the Martintown Horticultural Society and once at Summer Heights, explaining what she has learned, tips and tricks and the beauty of the

This week, we are celebrating the anniversary of our community paper Cornwall Seaway News. The history, present and future of the paper can be summed up in numbers. It has been 34 years since the paper was founded, we go to nearly 39,000 homes every week and we reach hundreds of thousands more online every month.

“In September 1985, we produced and delivered our very first Seaway Shopping News,” said Seaway News co-founder and General Manager Rick Shaver. “Circulation was 29,850 and the internet wasn’t even a word yet. Our friends at Remax (Terry and Jamie) bought our back page and still advertise with us today. Out of the 39 advertisers that day, we still have a handful including Remax, Cornwall Square, Accesoware, Farm Boy, Julius Miller (now Leons) Cameron Real Estate, Rogers Cable TV (now Cogeco) and Brookshell (now Seaway GM) who are active clients.”

While our numbers grow, our close-knit team has grown as well.

The team which began with co-founders Rick Shaver and Dick Aubry, who has since retired, has grown to include long time members like Jennifer Mayer, Colleen Benton-Parette and Kim Froats.

Sales Coordinator Jennifer Mayer has been with Seaway News for most of the past 34 years and remembers the wonderful people she’s worked with in that time.

Jennifer Mayer has been working at Seaway News almost since the start and she remembers the many changes and evolutions that have

taken place in the business. One thing that has not changed has been the close-knit character of the team that makes Seaway News possible.

“There are a lot of memories,” she said. “Too many good ones to list. We’ve had a great staff over the years.”

Colleen Benton-Parette began at Seaway News as an intern and has risen to become the manager of the Production Department and a liaison with the business’ owners and administration.

Kim Poirier-Froats has worked at Seaway News for 15 years in the Production Department.

She and Colleen Benton-Parette make all of our products, the paper, the magazines and even some of our web components look beautiful.

“It’s pretty awesome when you have a career where you don’t mind going to work,” she said.

“You know how people always ask you “How’s work?” I always answer “great, I love my job!”

Also, my co-workers … they are like my second family. We all get along.”

Shaver said that he was proud of the work accomplished at the paper by his Sales Coordinators and Production Department.

“Both are instrumental in our ad order system,” he said. “Their contribution is as important as Editorial and Sales.”

The paper has grown and added new sections over the years. Every week included with Seaway News is Cornwall Express for our French readers who want to read local stories about their community. Our cartoonist of 25 years James Lapierre has brought a lot of fun and laughter to our editorial page. Seaway News has also added popular columnists such as Claude McIntosh of Mac’s Musings and Nick

Sadly, this year we lost long-time columnist Sultan Jessa, who passed away in August. Sultan was a pillar of the Cornwall community and a beloved journalist. We were glad to have his columns grace our pages for more than 10 years.

One of the most successful and popular additions to the paper has been the famous, or infamous, Scuttlebutt section. Scuttlebutt is a section that Seaway News is very proud of, our readers are always excited to see the names of the people they know in Scuttlebutt.

Rick Shaver explained that in its 34th year, Seaway News is committed to growth and being a leader in news in Cornwall and SD&G. “This year we will not only focus on the growth of our paper, but reaching hundreds of thousands more online,” he said. “Who would have guessed that 34 years later, our shopper

would become the blanket news coverage for our area.”

For myself, being Editor at Cornwall Seaway News for the past three years has been a great experience. There is nowhere else where I could grow the way I have, and I feel privileged to be able to tell the stories of the community I grew up in.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Conservative Party of Canada candidate for the riding of SDSG Eric Duncan opened his campaign office on Wednesday, Aug. 28 and was joined by over 300 supporters throughout the evening, a slightly larger than anticipated crowd according to Campaign Manager Adrian Bugelli.

“It’s great to see the big blue team coming together and we are feeling very confident cutting the ribbon tonight with knowing the numbers of supporters we have,” said Bugelli.

Supporters from across Cornwall and SDG created a sea of blue inside 691 Brookdale Ave., spilling outside where a BBQ dinner was served alongside popcorn and Dairy Queen treats.

Children ran about with blue balloons and many excitedly sported Eric Duncan shirts and pins.

“We’ve got the best candidate possible. Eric Duncan has been training for 15 years and you know, the only downside about Eric Duncan is he’s going to make the former MP look bad,” said retiring MP Guy Lauzon with a laugh.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird was in attendance of the event, marking his first time in Cornwall.

“I’m thrilled to be here,” said Baird. “This is an exciting time for Canada and the Conservative Party. I never would have imagined four years ago that we would be this close to forming a government again.”

Baird said that Andrew Scheer needs MPs like Duncan across the country to encourage sensible economic policies, reasonable foreign policy and a greater focus on voters rather than photo opportunities. Baird commended Duncan’s experience, working for a man with integrity like Guy Lauzon for a number years.

“Working with Guy, I got to know Eric over many many years. He is smart, his is articulate, he is hard working. CORNWALL, Ontario – Families did not let the rainy weather stop their fun during the annual Labour Day picnic at Lamoureux Park between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“I think there has been some kind of event

on for 70 years now,” said Louise Lanctot, President of the Cornwall and District Labour Council, who have hosted the fun over the last several years.

Lanctot explained that there was a good turnout despite the weather, enjoying the live music and magic, bouncy castles and slides, face painting, a train ride and food. Lantot said

that the Council tried to offer everything for free. Donations and proceeds will support leukemia research, which has been the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) charity of choice for several years.

“This is also a good chance to talk about the steps forward…(including) the Labour Council asks in the federal election,” said Lanctot.

“In this election, we’re asking voters to aspire to more,” added Lanctot, who noted anti-racism campaigns within the Council.

“This is about upholding values like fairness and equality…we know that people in Canada are better than that, so we’re asking them to demand fairness for everyone in this next federal election.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – With beautiful weather on Tuesday, Aug. 27, hundreds of community members attended Touch-a-Truck with family and friends between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at Lamoureux Park, envisioning and exploring dream careers involving cool automobiles.

“Touch-a-Truck was a huge success,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement following the event.

“I loved seeing so many kids and adults taking interest in the trucks and asking City workers all kinds of great questions.”

The free event featured multiple municipal vehicles, including fire trucks, police cruisers, ambulances, recreation trucks, zamboni machines, garbage and recycling vehicles, street sweepers and more. Staff of each department gave brief tours of the vehicles and

described how they help them perform their jobs. Cornwall Fire Services also rigged up the City’s largest sprinkler once again, one of the public’s favourite, no cost events of the summer.

Some participants got suited up, adorning City jackets and safety equipment, like gloves and protective glasses, to get the full feel of the experience. Others even nestled into paramedic stretchers, seeing from the City workers perspective as well as the patient.

“This event (was) taking place to encourage children and their parents to discover all the ways the City of Cornwall serves them. Touch-aTruck (was) also an opportunity to inspire young people to pursue careers offered by the City,” read a City of Cornwall statement.

Mayor Clement said she hoped perhaps the event would lead some young local to discover their passion for a future career.

CORNWALL, Ontario – September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and to raise awareness and support to help fight the disease, the City of Cornwall raised the Childhood Cancer Awareness flag over City Hall on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019.

“I never thought about childhood cancer until I brought my boy to CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) and they told me

that he has Leukemia and that he wasn’t going home that day,” said Cheryl Tourangeau, who’s son Alex was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 9.

“They told me that if I hadn’t brought him in that day, that he wouldn’t have survived the weekend.”

Alex Tourangeau, now 16, says that events like Childhood Cancer Awareness Month mean a lot to survivors like himself.

“It means to me that people are coming together and helping kids with cancer,” he said.

Tourangeau explained that during the

month of September, he and his family will be hiding painted rocks around town as a part of a social media campaign to raise awareness for CHEO. “If someone finds a rock, they should take a picture of it and share it on social media with the hashtag #CHEORocks and then re-hide it,” Tourangeau explained.

Cheryl Tourangeau said that events like Childhood Cancer Awareness month could lead to better funding for research into these diseases affecting children.

Tourangeau explained how less than four per cent of all cancer research funding goes into childhood cancer research.

“You can beat it, but there is no guarantee you will live to your 80s because they don’t track that,” she said. “There are kids we know who are 16 and they are battling cancer for the fourth time. That’s why painting Cornwall gold for the month of September is so important.”

This is the fifth year that Cornwall has recognized the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

RE: Climate Change Dear Editor, In response to your article on the city’s Strategic plans. I agree that the environment should be a high priority. As you said the installation of water meters when new house are being built would be the time to do it. The cost would be negligible. But the city missed the

boat on this as hundreds or thousands of homes have been built already, since this idea has been talked about in the last few years.

Funny how our politicians talk about the environment as they try to make themselves look green so they can brag when it comes time for re-election.

McGuinty refused. They wanted to go green with solar and wind power. Solar power as we all know is dependent on the sun. No sun no power.

Wind turbines on the other hand depend on wind. No wind no power. Let’s have a look at the people who are hell bent on having us change our way of life while they continue reaping the benefits of fossil fuel energy – Al Gore, David Suzuki, Catherine McKenna, Trudeau and Barack Obama but to name a few. In 2006, Al Gore (net worth $ 200 million) said among other fear mongering platitudes that sea levels were to rise 20 feet within a very

short time. It has been proven that sea levels rise about 3 mm per year. He owns several properties in the US and uses 20 times more electricity in a year compared to ordinary Americans. The ultimate slap in the face. He bought a 9 million dollar home on the beach in California back in 2010. Why would anyone buy a seaside beach home with rising sea levels? David Suzuki (net worth $25 million) owns several properties throughout the world starting with his home ($8 million). Suzuki tells us all to cut down on our carbon footprint and half an hour later he flies off to Australia to give a speech on climate change. Catherine McKenna, our minister of climate change (?) is loud and boisterous. She will never accept the fact that some people have differing ideas on climate. She does not have time for these

deniers. Her baby is the carbon tax. Do you know that in 2017 she (Liberal government) gave 2.65 billion dollars to certain developing countries to fight climate change. The odd thing is they give millions of our dollars to TBA – to be announced. In other words they give the money away but they don’t even know to whom or where the money is going. Is that what the carbon tax is going to be? The government collects our tax money and sends it to other countries. Finally our prime minister. Our virtue signaling PM was asked by a reporter a few weeks back why is it that he wants us to cut back on our carbon emissions yet he had been to BC 10 times in 2 months. In his eloquent and arrogant way he did not answer the question at all. Trudeau’s motto seems to be: Do as I say and not as I do. Trudeau and McKenna like to go to these COP meetings in exotic locales. They discuss different ways that ordinary people can change their lifestyle while they bask in

opulence. This is where they decide to give our money away for climate change.

The last one is a doozy. ‘The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear.

CCoastlines are shrinking’. Believe it or not these words were pronounced by the president of the US in 2009 – Barack Obama. It is ironic that he has just bought a 29 acre estate on Martha’s Vineyard for 15 million dollars. Again why would you buy property on the beach if, according to them, sea levels are rising. I could also name a few Hollywood celebrities who are climate change ‘proponents’. You see them attending these meetings always in a beautiful setting yet they get there in their gas guzzling jets and million dollar yachts. Unfortunately, environmental activism has become a religion. Yes we do need to protect our environment but with a lot more common sense.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Nathan Da Silva, front man of prog rock group The Slyde, remembers playing music with drummer Brendan Soares as a teenager, jamming out to Metallica and Rush, when the friends were growing up in Cornwall.

Now, the peers and their band mates are returning to the area to perform a homecoming act in honour of their 10 year anniversary of producing rock & roll tunes together.

“I’m pretty excited we’ve lasted this long,” said Da Silva with a chuckle. “Band longevity is hard to come by...it feels good, definitely to look back on the 10 years of music we have released and share

In honour of a decade together, the band will be playing sets across the province this month, even incorporating some of their classic hits like The Craving, Soldier’s March and Lies. The band also plans to write and record new music soon and are already booking for festival seasons next year.

Just last month, The Slyde performed at Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany, one of the world’s largest heavy metal festivals, after winning the 2019 Wacken Metal Battle Canada among 80 other competing bands. Da Silva is proud of all his band’s accomplishments and looks forward to continuing doing what he loves with his peers.

Two sent to hospital after four vehicle collision CORNWALL, Ontario – Two individuals were sent to hospital after a four vehicle crash on Ninth St. between Augustus and York streets in Cornwall on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The accident occurred around 12:15 p.m. and police, fire and paramedics were

quickly on scene.

The two who were sent to hospital were sent there as a precautionary measure according to Cornwall Police Service (CPS) Communications Officer Stephanie MacRae.

CPS arrest two, seize over $22k in drugs, currency CORNWALL, Ontario – As a result of an ongoing investigation by the CPS Street Crime Unit, two men have been arrested and charged in relation to drug trafficking in the City of Cornwall.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, members of the Street Crime Unit conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle and located a significant quantity of drugs, including heroin, cocaine,

crack cocaine, speed pills and crystal meth.

Police also located a loaded handgun, in addition to a quantity of Canadian currency.

The seized currency and drugs are estimated to be a combined street value of over $22,000.

As a result of the investigation, two individuals were taken into custody.

Being on social media this weekend, I saw that many of my Cornwall friends had headed down to Brockville to check out the Tall Ships festival.

I had never been to Brockville, so I figured that this was a good excuse as any to check it out for the day.

Despite being half our size, Brockville is Cornwall’s closest comparator city, but in many ways, I feel there is no comparison at all.

The first major difference I noticed was that all of the old historical architecture and buildings that are still everywhere throughout Brockville’s downtown core.

These buildings are all beautiful and it is great to see that Brockville has learned how to preserve its history and repurpose it. These old buildings are not just museums, but they’ve become doctors’ offices, restaurants and businesses.

The preservation of history does not have to mean the halt of progress. Interwoven with these historical structures are newer condo buildings and other offices. Preserve what you can, and allow progress where it fits. Although Cornwall has lost much of its history to fires or cleared away for newer buildings, it is good to see that when it comes to the Cotton Mills district of our city, we are following a similar path as Brockville. Older structures are being preserved, and new developments are going up where they fit.

When it comes to Brockville’s downtown, the difference is like night and day. The downtown of Brockville is vibrant and there are no empty storefronts. It almost reminded me of Old Montreal with the variety of stores and how busy it was.

Cornwall’s downtown along Pitt St. is very

different. We are still experiencing growing pains in our downtown. There are quite a few empty storefronts. This is not to say that there aren’t those who have taken important steps forward. Business owners like Randy Sauve and Andre Pommier are strong advocates of our downtown core and have made strides towards making their part of Pitt St. a place to be. The same goes to our Tourism Department and those who hold events in the downtown like Art Walk and Food Fest. These are all great things in Cornwall, but it is hard to go to Brockville and see every downtown storefront filled and not wonder if something could be done differently.

I think the differences you see in Brockville and Cornwall come down to history and culture.

Cornwall has a rich history as a manufacturing town, a history we should be proud of, but as we all know, the factories and mills are gone now, and the transition away from that economy has not been easy. Brockville on the other hand seems to have embraced the tourism economy wholeheartedly and it shows in its downtown.

Cornwall is currently developing a plan for its future waterfront. The Brockville waterfront plan is titled the “Downtown & Waterfront Master Plan”. Perhaps Cornwall should take a similar approach. There are a lot of great ideas in the latest draft of the waterfront plan, but because of the downtown’s proximity and need for attention, I think that it should be included in that plan as well.

Finally, Brockville has a beautiful waterfront filled with not just living spaces like condos, but also restaurants. They have a beautiful boardwalk, something that would be worth emulating to draw people to our waterfront.

In this age of energy conservation and climate change awareness it is hard to image a utility urging its customers to use more electricity as a way to keep monthly bills from rising, but in 1960 that is what Ontario Hydro was pitching to households and businesses.

In a speech at the annual United Counties Warden’s Banquet on Sept. 6, 1960, an Ontario Hydro official warned that if Ontario consumers didn’t step up to the plate and start using more power, Hydro would be forced to increase rates to make up for the financial shortfall.

“Customers must use more power to keep rates from increasing,” he said. “If we can get people to use more power, Hydro will not have to increase rates.”

The Hydro pitchman told his audience that hydro power was a gift from nature and mankind (customers) should make better (more) use of it.

He announced that Hydro was set to roll out a public relations campaign to convince consumers to use more power.

Cornwall Street Railway Light and Power Co. was on the use-more-electricity bandwagon with the slogan “Live Better Electrically (the safe, clean modern way).

Of course, hidden in the sales pitch was the fact that the more power a household, or business, used, even without a rate increase, the bigger the monthly bill. ************ Two escaped Joyceville Penitentiary prisoners, one a Cornwall native, abducted Cornwall grocer Robert Leroux from his home at 462 Fourth St. W. and forced him at knife point to

drive them to Montreal, where he was released.

The men took a change of clothes from Mr. Leroux’s closet and relieved him of $30.

Three days later they were captured, one in North Bay and the other in Montreal. They were charged by city police with armed robbery and abduction.

The two, serving three-year sentences, escaped the medium-security prison in a guard’s car that they had been working on, unsupervised, in the prison yard.

The car was ditched near Harrison’s Corners when it ran out of gas. The two made their way to Cornwall and the Leroux home on foot.

INGLESIDE, Ontario – Dog lovers could enjoy the presence of 1,570 dogs at Farran Park in Ingleside this weekend during the annual Cornwall District Kennel Club Dog Show.

“We had 1,570 dogs over the four days; that represents a 32 per cent increase in the average (turnout) over the last eight years,” said Mike Lanctot, President of Cornwall District Kennel Club. “We are really really pleased this year with an exceptionally good entry.”

Lanctot explained that this is a popular season for dog shows, and this particular show has been held in the region for the past 25 years, at least.

This year, the competition was humbled to see the current top dog in Canada, a black newfoundland dog by the name of Tupac, in attendance.

“We’ve got some of the top dogs in Canada here this weekend, and the top dog. To have people with dogs of high caliber here is a compliment,” said Marilyn Boissonneault, Vice President of the Cornwall District Kennel Club.

Boissonneault noted that competitors had

come from across North America, and some international judges were also in attendance, performing diligent rankings for many consecutive hours.

This year, the event included a new popular event called the Sprinter, which is similar to a Lure, but just a straight sprint forwards. There were also obedience trials, rally trials and conformation shows over four days.

“This year we were fortunate to have the national speciality of both the Newfoundland Dog Club of Canada and the Shar Pei Dog Club of Canada…its a nice thing to host,” said Lanctot. “It was a wonderful weekend, the weather cooperated…and the exhibiters certainly had a great time. We’ve got a lot of positive feedback for next year.”

The competition ran from Thursday, Aug. 29 to Sunday, Sept. 1 this year.

CORNWALL, Ontario – A lineup of over 1,500 spectators anxiously awaited entrance into the OHL Labour Day hockey game at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Monday, Sept. 2, with the Kingston Frontenacs facing off against Ottawa 67’s.

The final score saw the Frontenacs victorious 8-5. The game was action packed, with a few goals scored within minutes of the puck drop and a few jovial fights on the ice.

This is the second year an OHL face-off has taken place locally during the Labour Day long weekend, according to Lorne Taillon, City Leisure Arts Coordinator.

“It’s kind of a nice day to start the hockey season off. It’s good to see all the kids here. I’m excited to watch the game, sit here and have some popcorn and enjoy…” said Mayor Bernadette Clement, who noted that this was her second puck drop in the Ed Lumley Arena.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The beginning of a new semester and school year saw several excited students at St. Lawrence College Cornwall Campus’ orientation during the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 3.

This year, SLC Cornwall has new professors and programs, bursaries for 140 students amounting to $172,000 and expanded services, such as mental health support. The college also has a new partnership with Saint Paul University in Ottawa, allowing graduates from seven programs to receive a Bachelors Degree two years sooner. “SLC staff and faculty are really excited to meet you,” said Kathy O’Brien, SLC Senior Vice President during a presentation. “Our team is really incredible and we are here to support and inspire you as you work towards achieving your goals…I want to encourage you to get informed about everything SLC has to offer, from student clubs and activities to…student government

events, your time at SLC can be about creating friendships as much as it is about learning and growing.”

Marg Hogan, Manager of Student Services congratulated students on deciding to attend post-secondary education and encouraged students to inquire about financial support, the student food bank and mental health services on campus.

“It’s a small student body which is really good. I’ve been to university before and when you have a lecture hall of 300 students you can feel a bit like a number…it’s a lot nicer, you can talk to your instructors…on a personal level,” said paramedic student Nathan Mader, who also noted that tuition is more affordable in comparison to other institutions.

“I find it more of a family here as well with your classmates. Everyone is willing to help each other,” added Andrew Edson, paramedic student.
