Thanks to generous donations across our three counties and partnerships with the City of Cornwall and CCH, the first two doctors from CCHF’s “Adopt a Medical Resident” program are now halfway through emergency specialization training with Queen’s University.

Doctors selected for our program come from a highly competitive field, they’re already licensed GPs, and they’ll access emergency specialization training thanks to our

fundraising. In exchange for training, Drs. Brittany Aziz and Mike Heseltine will each work at CCH’s Emergency Department for at least two years following their program.

Drs. Aziz and Heseltine are already spending time at CCH, training in our Emergency Department, Anesthesia, Orthopedics and Critical Care Unit. Additional training occurs in Kingston and at CHEO. In July 2020 these talented doctors will officially join CCH’s Emergency Department.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The 17th edition of the Seaway International Wine Festival will be taking place on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Ramada by Wyndham Cornwall.

Every year this celebrated event brings 18 wine and spirit vendors and brewers to the city

and it also traditionally supports a good cause.

This year, some of the proceeds from ticket sales, as well as the live auction and giveaways will go to support the St. Lawrence River Institute.

Local lung transplant survivor showcases his storytelling talents

CORNWALL, Ontario – When Myles Lynch of St. Andrews West opened his eyes in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Toronto General Hospital on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, he was astounded and thrilled: he was alive.

Having been wheeled into the Operating Room (OR) three days earlier on Sunday, April 21, the then 21-year-old knew the risks associated with his surgery, as well as the rewards: if he were to survive the second phase of his surgery, which would commence the next day (Thursday, April 25), he would become the first ever Canadian to successfully receive three double-lung transplants.

The surgery took place over a number of days due to many serious incidents: Lynch’s pulmonary artery ruptured (for the second time ever), he required an Aortic patch, surgeons needed to remove a number of blood clots and his body needed time to adjust to donor blood after losing so much during the initial 21 hours of operation.

Although Lynch feels a sense of invincibility having overcome so many health scares, all while approaching life with a pragmatic optimism, he often feels that this successful feat is not something he has necessarily earned, but rather a status that has been bestowed on him.

Now, Lynch is taking control of his narrative, sharing the details and challenges he has faced throughout his life, all while showcasing his multi-faceted qualities and

kaleidoscope of talents. With his film 8 Thousand Myles, the now 22-year-old is proud to remind friends and supporters that he is much more than any label associated with a health circumstance: he is a fun solo-traveller, an artist, and someone who has bravery to overcome obstacles and try new things.

On Sunday, Dec. 22, Lynch will be showing his debut feature-length movie, which he filmed and edited on his own over a fivemonth period, at the Port Theatre in Cornwall.

Attendees are asked to arrive at 6:30 p.m. and donate $5 in cash for their ticket on site.

The movie will follow Lynch on a seven-week journey across Canada where he attended a cousin’s wedding in Golden, B.C. His trip commenced on Sunday, Aug. 18 and ended when he returned to his South Stormont home on Sunday, Oct. 6. Throughout his journey he stopped to see friends and family along the way, different landmarks and took part in some cool activities, including acting as an Uber Eats driver — an occupation he has experience with and enjoys — and downhill mountain biking in the West Coast, just to name a few.

Before he left, he posted some promotional videos of his adventure on Facebook, including a clip of him removing a car seat from his trusty Volkswagon.

Province provides funding to fight impaired driving NICK SEEBRUCH

LONG SAULT, Ontario – Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell presented local police services with $31,682 to help fight impaired driving.

The presentation of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) Grant was made at the OPP detachment in Long Sault. The money will be split equally between the OPP’s SD&G detachment and the Cornwall Police Service (CPS).

“With this funding, our local police services will be able to conduct regular roadside spotchecks and education campaigns needed to detect impaired drivers and keep our roads safe,” said McDonell. “It will help pay for sworn officers’ overtime and paid duty RIDE activities, and that’s really important.”

CPS have laid 47 impaired charges in 2019, while the OPP have laid 160.

“This funding will assist the Cornwall Police Service in combating impaired driving in our community,” said CPS Chief Danny Aikman.

“Through increased RIDE programs and education campaigns, we hope to continue to raise awareness to the dangers of impaired driving and remind the public of the various means of transportation available for a safe and sober ride home.”

OPP SD&G Detachment commander Inspector Mike Mulhearn reminded residents to drive sober this holiday season.

“I would like to remind our residents and visitors not to drink and drive and to facilitate safe roadways and trails this Christmas and New Year’s season. OPP members from SD&G Detachment will be conducting RIDE Programs throughout the three United Counties,” said Mulhearn.

This column will first appear in the Jan. 1, 2020 edition of Seaway News. It is the start of a new year and new decade. I’m going to take this time to set some goals and predictions for our coverage area over the next ten years.

1. Cornwall will break 50,000 population It has been a milestone that has been on Cornwall’s horizon for many years, breaking the 50,000 population mark.

According to current projections, if Cornwall’s population growth continues along current trends, we are not expected to hit 50,000 until 2036, but there is a lot going on in this city today, and I am optimistic that because of other factors that are in our future that we will exceed 50,000 people by the end of the 2020s.

2. Council size will shrink Over the past few years there has been talk about Cornwall City Council cutting a few seats. I’m hearing this talk more and more over the past year both inside and outside Council Chambers. I’ve heard a lot of discussion about two things, whether or not Cornwall should reconsider the ward system and that Cornwall needs to shrink the size of Council.

While I no longer think that a ward system would be beneficial to the city, I do think that there is merit to the idea of cutting council seats. Ten councillors and a mayor seems like a lot for a city Cornwall’s size. Even the mayor has said that the number of councillors seems high to her.

By cutting the size of council, not only will it save a little bit of money for the taxpayers, but I also think that it would lead

to a shrinking number of committees as committees merge to better suit the fewer number of councillors to go around.

3. Waterfront development Another one that has been in the works for a long time, but now that a new Waterfront Master Plan has been adopted

by Cornwall City Council, expect to see development begin.

I think we will see relatively small projects completed first, such as the implementation of pop-up shops as lobbied for

by Councillor Todd Bennett, and at least one major land purchase from the federal government, perhaps in partnership with Akwesasne, perhaps not.

I expect that we will see big moves on this file sooner rather than later. This Council passed the new waterfront plan, they must be the first to make a big move if they want to set the tone for the future.

4. Economic diversification I think we are already starting to see the dawn of a changing economy in Cornwall.

This year we’ve added new distribution centres, and a new call centre, but I think we should not discount the number of new businesses we have seen spring up over the past year.

Especially downtown, we are seeing formerly empty storefronts be filled by unique and attractive shops, whether they be for popcorn, brunch, or a great gifts. Cornwall is showing itself as a great place to start a small business.

We are also seeing that Cornwall is a place seeking to upskill. Institutions like St. Lawrence College, the Ontario Emerging Jobs Institute (OEJI), and The Cornwall Innovation Centre, now known as CREATE, are not only supporting small

businesses through their remote workspaces, guidance and other resources, they are also helping us grow a skilled workforce and future entrepreneurs.

This growing skilled workforce will attract new business sectors to Cornwall.

The City will become more tech friendly creating better paying jobs and attracting young families.

5. Diversification of the Cornwall identity I’ve talked about how in Cornwall’s future lies a growing population and a growing economy, but the future also has in store a growing cultural identity for Cornwall.

We are already seeing the beginning of this. Cornwall’s French community is actively working to bring more Francophones to Cornwall. Cornwall has many advantages for new Canadians. We are close to major cities, we are affordable, we are big

enough to have all the amenities, but small enough for newcomers to feel welcomed and to find their place.

Like population and economy, cultural identity is a fluid thing. The cultural identity of Cornwall will change. New immigrants will come to Cornwall because it is a great place to live. There are plenty of jobs to be had, and new ideas and new ways of thinking will make Cornwall a more dynamic, rich, and innovative community.

In the quiet of his office, at the end of his first official day on the job, the new mayor of Toronto sat down and penned his first official letter on “Mayor’s Office” letterhead.

The letter was from Nathan Phillips to his mother, Mary, back in Cornwall.

The date was Jan. 3, 1955.

Phillips grew up in Cornwall where he attended Central Public School and Cornwall Collegiate before becoming a prominent Toronto lawyer and politician.

Several years ago his nephew, Bernard (Bernie) Miller, gave me a copy of the letter, which had become a Miller family keepsake.

“Frankly, I have tears in my eyes as I write, for joy of course ... because it is a long way up the ladder from 22 York St. in Cornwall to the office of mayor of one of the great cities of the world,” he wrote.

The red, brick two-storey house with a large veranda on York Street, across from what was then Hotel Dieu Hospital, was long ago torn down.

His first day in office was busy. It started with a call from the lieutenant governor of Ontario, the Queen’s representative. This was followed by a visit to the Armoury where he was received by the officers’ and sergeants’ messes.

“You would have got a thrill seeing the pipers in uniform pipe me around the armouries,” he told his mother.

He later called on Cardinal McGuigan and the Bishop of Toronto before taking in

a Leafs’ game at Maple Leaf Gardens with his son, Howard.

He noted that except for the hockey game, the others were a sampling of some of the “social affairs the mayor must indulge in.”

Phillips’ mayoral victory made history.

He became the first non-Protestant, and first non-Orange Lodge member in the 20the Century, to hold the office, something he noted in his letter. The new mayor was from a prominent Cornwall Jewish family.

“Well, your white-haired boy has made history and he will try to do a good job,” he told his mother.

He finished the letter with “So, the Mayor of Toronto, your devoted son, closes his first letter written by him from the mayor’s office to the best mother in the world.

With love, Nathan.”

Phillips would remain in office until 1962. In all, he spent 36 years as a Toronto councillor and mayor.

The new Toronto City Hall along with the parkland around and outdoor skating rink was named in his honour: Nathan Phillips Square. It is one of Toronto’s best-known landmarks.

As he said, not bad for a Jewish kid who grew up in a modest two-story brick house at 22 York St. THIS WEEK IN 1938 Cornwall post office reported a record volume of mail during the week leading up to Christmas Day. The post master said 200,000 cards and letters went through the system in the seven-day period. ... The city and United Counties were hit with a 12-inch snowstorm on Boxing Day. Roads were so bad one resident said it took 2 1/2 hours to travel from Chesterville to Cornwall. ...

Stormont MP Lionel Chevrier was named to the King’s Counsel honour list. The 34-year-old had been practising law in the city since 1928. ... Only one Christmas Day baby was born in the city. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Cadieux of 211 Third St. E. ... A 19-year-old man from Winchester was given a six-month prison sentence for receiving stolen poultry. ...

City council approved the annual $2,700 grant for the local fire brigade. ... J.D. Campbell had hardwood for sale at $3 a cord, delivered. .... William Ray was re-elected trustee for S.S. No. 4, Cornwall. ... The fire brigade answered six alarms in a six-hour perod, five were to deal with chimney fires. ... Two city men convicted of stealing belting from the Howard Smith Paper Mill property were sentenced to three months in jail. The men claimed that they found the belting while rumaging through the mill dump and thought it had been discarded. However, witnesses from the mill testified that it wasn’t discarded.

The two men said they planned on selling the belting to farmers. Total value of the belting was $35. Magistrate P.C. Bergeron said the stiff sentence was to discourage others from trespassing on mill property. ... County Court Judge Francis Costello ordered the United Counties to pay a total of $15,255 for 14.5 acres it expropriated in Charlottenburgh Township from two owners. Mrs. Catherine Purcell was awarded $8,337 while Mrs. Annie Craig was granted $6,918. ... Cornwall Police reported that during 1937 it provided overnight lodging in the station’s cells to 3,417 transients passing through the city in search of work. The youngest was 12. The oldest 72. Only a handful of those given overnight lodging were women.

HERE AND THERE Thoughts and prayers go out to retired city police sergeant and Hall of Fame president Thom Racine who is scheduled for surgery on Jan. 8.

Same for curling colleague Barry Millet. ... No suprise that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was stumped when asked for the definition of middle-class. What does he know about middle-class? ... We now have baseball players who work every four days from May to October making more money than what the CEO of General Motors is paid. Of course, when a reporter pointed out to Babe Ruth that he made more than the president of the United States (during the Great Depression), the Babe noted that he was having a better year than the prez.

SPORTS STUFF Norm Leroux parlayed a fourth-place finish in the Rona Christmas Bonspiel round-robin into a gold medal performance in the 12-team final. His supporting cast included Roger Comtois third; Ken Joseffson second and Mario Merizzi lead. Alex MacDougall, who slipped into the championship round with a 6-4 win in his round-robin final game finished second. His team include Ken Munroe, third; Roger Roy, second; Luc Tremblay, lead. Rounding out the top three was Peter VanLoon with Ron Racine, third; Larry Marshall, second and Luc Tremblay, lead.

TRIVIA Dalton McGuinty was just the second Roman Catholic to serve as premier of Ontario. The first Roman Catholic premier was born in Glengarry and spent most of his adult life living in Cornwall.

Infants and young toddlers have little or no concept of the outer limits (peripheries) of their world. Originally, it was within the spindles of their playpen, then to the living room walls, with a safety gate at the top of the stairs leading to the basement.

Up until about ‘the age of reason’, i.e. about five or six years, the periphery of a child’s solo travels was the stipulation: “You can go around the block, but you can’t cross the road.” By the time the youngster’s age becomes a two-digit number, the law is, “When the street

lights come on, you come straight home.”

When I got my first real bicycle, the world became my oyster: Lake Ontario to the south, Downsview Airport to the north, the Scarborough Bluffs to the east. When my one-speed was up-graded to a ten-speed, only the daylight hours limited my travels.

When my two wheels became the four of a 1962 VW Beetle, Key West, San Diego and Kapuskasing became the extremities of my travel map.

Then came the Douglas DC-8 and the Boeing 747: Colombia to the south, Tuktoyaktuk to the north, the black sea coast of Bulgaria to the east and Honolulu to the west.

What will 2020 and beyond bring? I do

not know. I discovered what the limit of one’s travels might become when I recently visited a friend in a long-term care facility. To enter was easy: the first door slid open automatically. Once I was captive inside the double-doors of the ‘air lock’ vestibule, I commanded the second door to open, allowing me to enter into the large common area.

The room was filled with dozens of residents sitting motionless in their wheelchairs. Most were gazing passively at a large television screen. This is what their world had shrunk to. Shocked, I experienced a more than seven-decade flashback to my childhood: “You can go around the block, but you can’t cross the road.” Their world had shrunk to something smaller than that!

When it came time to leave, I was confronted by the same door that had allowed me enter. A placard stated: “To exit, enter the five-digit code on the key pad”. I glanced about. Nothing. I looked all around. Couldn’t find it. The door was barring my way to the outside world. For a moment I was prevented from leaving, unable to escape. I had the unnerving feeling that my world had forever shrunk to the common room’s walls. I imagined what it would be like: no more canoeing in the Adirondacks; no winter stay in Portugal; no flight in my type number 358; no exploring the Maritimes in our VW camper.

To my relief, my troubled imaginings were interrupted by an attendant’s kind voice: “Are you trying to get out, sir?”

CORNWALL, Ontario - L’Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario (ACFO) pour SD&G a accueilli des dizaines de nouveaux Canadiens lors d’une fête pizza et bowling à l’Olympia Bowl le samedi 21 décembre 2019.

«Ce fut une vraie surprise pour nous d’apprendre qu’il y a beaucoup de familles francophones qui s’installent ici», a déclaré Céline Baillgeron-Tardiff de l’ACFO. Baillgeron-Tardiff a estimé qu’il y avait environ 120 personnes de 33 à 35 familles qui ont été invitées à l’événement samedi.

Dianne Poirier, également de l’ACFO, a déclaré que des liens ont été établis avec ces nouveaux Canadiens par l’entremise d’organisations francophones des Caraïbes et d’Afrique.

«Il y a un an, nous ne connaissions pas la plupart de ces personnes. Certains ne sont

ici que depuis trois semaines », a-t-elle déclaré.

Il y avait deux invités spéciaux qui sont venus pour célébrer l’événement, le Père Noël et la mairesse de Cornwall Bernadette Clement.

Clement a salué l’événement comme un excellent moyen d’aider les nouveaux Canadiens à se sentir les bienvenus à Cornwall.

«Beaucoup de ces liens concernent les familles qui aident les familles», a-t-elle déclaré.

Yethaschedly Adam, qui est venu au Canada en juin d’Haïti, était l’un des nouveaux Canadiens présents à la partie de bowling. Pendant ce temps, elle a tissé des liens solides avec la communauté et a donné naissance à un bébé maintenant âgé de trois mois.

«J’adore Cornwall», a-t-elle déclaré. «C’est une communauté très calme et accueillante.»

AMPS seek assistance identifying early morning shooter PROVIDED BY AMPS ST. REGIS – The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance with an investigation into an incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, Dec. 20 in the village of Kana:takon (St. Regis).

At approx. 1 a.m. AMPS observed a dark coloured Chrysler 300 travelling towards the intersection of First St. and Angus Thomas

Memorial St.. Police were conducting general patrol duties when an officer noticed a firearm protruding from the subject vehicle in the direction of the marked police vehicle.

A number of shots were discharged from the firearm and the Chrysler 300 fled immediately into the southern jurisdiction of Akwesasne. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police were contacted and will be assisting in this investigation.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police are

offering a monetary reward for any information that can lead to the arrest and subsequent conviction of the suspects responsible for endangering the lives of our community members.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The team at Century 21 in Cornwall presented a cheque for $4,125, which represents funds collected over the past year through the firms Homes for Hospice program.

The program allows realtors with Century 21 to donate a part of their commission from the sale of a home to Carefor Hospice Cornwall.

The Homes for Hospice program is dedicated to the memory of Sherry MacCulloch, a Century 21 realtor.

“The program because of what she meant to Century 21 and because of our desire to give back to the community,” said Troy Vaillancourt,

co-owner and realtor with Century 21 Cornwall.

Sandy Collette, Fundraising Coordinator for Carefor Hospice Cornwall said that some of the money will go towards a new van to help their clients get to appointments and attend day programs at Hospice.

Collette said that come spring, Hospice is planning another fashion show fundraiser in support of Camp Erin, a camp for children and teens who are living with the loss of a loved one.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Joel Gibeault and Jaymie Secord, also known as Johnny Mountaintop and Joe Wilderness have some pretty lofty aspirations, literally.

The pair plan to climb each of the 46 peaks of the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York state.

Johnny Mountaintop has been climbing peaks for two to three years, but Joe Wilderness only started last June.

“I love the solitude and being in nature gives you an excuse to stay in shape,” said Wilderness.

So far Wilderness has climbed 23 of the 46 peaks and Mountaintop has climbed 18.

Mountaintop plans on catching up to Wilderness when climbing season starts up again in spring. Over the winter months, they are going to train and do indoor rock wall climbing.

“We’ve taken up rock climbing to keep ourselves active,” explained Mountaintop. “Its a new hobby for us that helps with cardio and conditioning while challenging your brain.

Climbing it is like a puzzle and I really enjoy that aspect of it.”

Wilderness and Mountaintop have already conquered the highest peak of the Adirondacks, Mt. Marcy.

The pair have some big plans for 2020. In addition to planning some climbs in Costa Rica, the pair also have applied to be in the

next season of Amazing Race Canada.

“Every time we climb we grow and we get more and more competitive and a show like his will test our team,” Wilderness said.

Wilderness explained that they should know in early 2020 if they have been selected for the show.

He went on to say that they have received great support from Cornwall.

“We’ve gotten awesome support from the city, and from our sponsors,” he said. “It is awesome to have such a supportive community.”

ACFO welcomes new French Canadians with bowling NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario (ACFO) for SD&G welcomed dozens of new Canadians with a pizza and bowling party at Olympia Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019.

“It was a real surprise to us to learn of all of the Francophone families moving here,” said Céline Baillgeron-Tardiff of ACFO. Baillgeron-Tardiff estimated that there were around 120 people from 33 to 35 families who were invited to the event on Saturday.

Dianne Poirier, also of ACFO, said that connections were made with these new Canadians through Caribbean and African French organizations.

“A year ago we didn’t know most of these people. Some have been here only three

weeks,” she said. “We said we could do an event with everyone and they said, let’s go bowling. Some of the guests today have never been bowling before.”

There were two special guests who dropped in to help celebrate the event, Santa Claus and Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement.

Clement praised the event as a great way to help new Canadians feel welcome in Cornwall.

“A lot of these connections has to do with families helping families,” she said.

One of the new Canadians who was at the bowling party was Yethaschedly Adam, who came to Canada in June from Haiti. In that time she has made strong connections in the community and has given birth to a now threemonth-old baby.

“I adore Cornwall,” she said. “It is a very calm and welcoming community.”
