UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario – For 40 years Helen Thomson has served her community as a municipal employee with the United Counties of SD&G. Starting on Jan. 22, 1979, Thomson began as an administrative assistant in the Planning Department before eventually becoming County Clerk, a position she has served in for many years. Today, July 20, 2020 Thomson has announced she will be retiring at the end of the year. As County Clerk and Director of Council Services, Thomson handled a range of responsibilities from organizing the Council agenda, signing by-laws alongside the County Warden and CAO, to officiating weddings. “I feel very fortunate to have had such a long career at the County and I truly enjoyed my work,” Thomson said. “I have worked with many great Wardens, Councils and staff. The County has seen me through many of life’s milestones – getting married, having children and now grandchildren.” Thomson said that with mixed emotions, she was ready to enter the sunset of her career. “I discovered through the COVID shut down, I really enjoy being at home,” she
said. “My office visitors were one-, two- and three-year-olds and a farmer who stopped for lunch. I have realized it is time.” Thomson explained that she is ready to spend more time with her husband Don on their Martintown-area dairy farm and with her kids, Drew, Kurtis and Kelsey, as well as five grandchildren, Brooke, Tristan, Scotlyn, Adelyn and Ashton. Counties CAO Tim Simpson congratulated Thomson on her retirement. “I have worked with many staff members over my own 30-year career in municipal government, and I can truly say that there is no one I have enjoyed working alongside more than Helen,” said Simpson. “Her loyalty to the County, professionalism, and work ethic are second to none. She has been my ‘go to’ colleague for almost 10 years and her retirement marks the end of an era in SDG.” Warden Frank Prevost added his compliments as well. “If I have a question, I know that Helen has the answer,” said Prevost. “On behalf of County Councils both past and present, I wish Helen all the best in her retirement and I know she will enjoy her time as a grandmother in the years to come.” A successor as yet to be named for Thomson’s position.
Name shaming may hit close to home Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings
EDITORIAL@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM
When it comes to name shaming, and its slippery slope, no one treads a more tedious tightrope than the author of one of the world’s most beloved hymns. Amazing Grace was composed by veteran slave ship sailor and captain John Newton who during his slave ship career showed no mercy for the kidnapped African men, women and children stuffed below deck like cattle and delivered to ruthless slave owners. The hymn came after Newton had one of those “Jesus” moments brought on by a fierce storm that almost took his ship to the bottom of the Atlantic. Newton went on to become an anti-slave campaigner and re-invented himself as an evangelical Anglican preacher. Unfortunately his conversation came too late for the hundreds of Africans he delivered to slave owners. Ironically, the hymn is Newton’s saving grace. Meanwhile, the Knights of Columbus organization has become a target of the name shaming movement sweeping the United States and Canada. Christopher Columbus, the K of C patron and namesake, stands accused of mistreating aboriginals. A few communities have removed Columbus statues. Others have been vandalized or torn down by vigilantes.
Word out of K of C head quarters is that the name will not be changed. Stay tuned. Closer to home, there is Gray’s Creek, named after James Gray, a British Army major who fled the United States and settled in the area in 1784. He brought his family and a domestic slave named Dorine who had a son, John, born in Upper Canada. Dorine’s grand-father was brought to America from Africa. Slaves in Upper Canada were treated far better than slaves in the United States, nevertheless they were owned by their masters. When Major Gray died in 1795, mother and children became the property of his son, Robert. They were freed a few years later when Robert died in a ship wreck on Lake Ontario. His will granted Dorine and her children their freedom. At the time of Robert’s death, the right to own slaves existed in Upper Canada. However, the importation of slaves was outlawed. There are not many, if any, church baptismal fonts that had a brief life as a bird bath. But the St. Columban’s Church baptismal font is one. Back in 1930s the decades-old font made from one piece of sandstone was replaced by the pastor of the day, Rev. Francis Foley. It was moved to the church basement and forgotten, until 1962 when pastor Msgr. R. J. MacDonald gave it to a priest, Rev. Herb Seguin, who transported it to his Summerstown-area cottage where it became a bird bath. Years later, around 1985, the font/bird bath was tracked down. The property now was owned by a family who graciously, upon discovering the bird bath’s history, gave it back to the
parish. It was placed in the church and rededicated in 1986. SPORTS STUFF In his autobiography “The Bird” hockey legend Wren Blair called Cornwall’s Orval Tessier one of the greatest scorers he ever saw. “When Tess got in range of the goal, I never saw a player who could pinpoint shots the way he could,” said Blair who coached and managed in the National Hockey League. Tessier played with Blair’s Kingston Frontenacs of the Eastern Professional Hockey League. His line mates were Bobby Attersley and Tom McCarthy. ... Years later, back in junior hockey as part-owner of the Kingston Frontenacs, Blair took Chad Kilger in the first round then convinced him to skip an NCAA scholarship to play for the Fronts. Kilger was pencilled in as a first overall pick but teams backed off because they were convinced he would not play in the OHL. Blair got him as a 15th pick. When Kilger was drafted as an 18-year-old by Anaheim and was promoted to the NHL, it was the third year in a row that Kingston lost its first-round pick to the NHL. The others were Chris Gratton and Brett Lindros. THIS WEEK CIRCA 1943 - After pleading guilty to stealing $20 from the Loblaw’s Groceteria, a 13-year-old Cornwall boy was sent to St. Joseph’s Industrial School in Alfred, Ont. for an indefinite period. (Four decades later the school run by a relIgious brothers order was closed by the Ontario government after dozens of sexual assault cases involving the religious brothers. ... For stealing two onions from a local store, two boys, ages 12 and 14, were placed under the custody of probation officer
Joseph St. Denis for a month and given a 7 p.m. curfew. ... Convicted of stealing a crosssaw and rip hammer from Cornwall Street Railway, a city man was given a three-month jail sentence. ... A soldier at the Canadian Army training centre (behind the armoury) was sentenced to seven months in jail after he was found guilty of stealing money in letters sent to other soldiers. ... Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Crites, 451 Fifth St. E., received word that their son, Pilot Officer Clinton Crites, was killed when his plane was shot down over Germany. ... Pte. Kenneth Wilson of Cornwall, a member of the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR), celebrated his 23rd birthday in a German prisoner-of-war camp. He was taken prisoner in August, 1942. ... Bob Surgenor, 19, and Jack Snetsinger, 20, both of Cornwall, graduated as pilot officers at the Royal Canadian Air Force base in St. Hubert, Que. ... Parents of Pilot Officer Mathias “Matt” Laflamme, 22, of Wales and LAC Glendon McGaughey of Cornwall, were notified that their sons had arrived “somewhere in England.” ... Angelo Lebano was elected president of Local 212 of the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers. ... Ovilia Labelle was given the garbage collection contract in the urban part of Cornwall Township at $28 a day. TRIVIA Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Ontario Premier Bill Davis were among the special guests for this event in Cornwall in October 1976. TRIVIA ANSWER On June 32, 1946 Cornwall’s first parking meters were put in operation. They were installed on Pitt and Second streets in the downtown core.

Imagine the following scenario. You live with your partner for 25 years. Never marry. You pay the utilities. You pay the groceries. Your partner pays the mortgage…and is the only person on title. Who gets the house or the equity if one of you wants to leave the relationship? What if your new spouse is now paying part of the mortgage? Or chips in for new appliances? Should they now have a claim to the home that you own and lived in before them? There is a contract for that. Whether you are moving in together before or after marriage, one of the most important discussions you need to have with your spouse (married or common-law) is about entering into a cohabitation agreement or a marriage contract. The idea is to be transparent with your spouse as to what you each are bringing in to the relationship. How you envision each
spouse’s responsibilities towards financial obligations and how you wish for the financial issues to be dealt with if there is a separation or divorce. Do you wish to split everything equally or based on your respective incomes? A good contract should let the spouses know who is expected to pay the mortgage, the bills, the taxes and repairs. Your lawyer can explain some unique rules that deal with the matrimonial home, no matter whose name is on title, when you are legally married. Your lawyer will also advise the common-law spouses that they are not protected in the same way as married spouses when it comes to the home you share. The spouse who owns the home will want to know how to protect the equity that you have built up in the home and what both spouses can expect if the relationship breaks down. There is nothing romantic about these discussions but they are necessary. These issues are much easier to deal with at the beginning then they will be if the relationship deteriorates. *Only my clients get my legal advice. This is strictly general legal information. If you think you have a legal issue, please, hire a lawyer. It can even be me. I can be reached via email at jodie@yourlawfirm.ca
SD&G has cycling tourism ambassadors NICK SEEBRUCH
nseebruch@seawaynews.com
UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario – The United Counties of SD&G has hired two summer students to travel the trails and roads of the region to promote tourism. Aimee Curotte and Andy Gadbois will be travelling the waterfront trails and greeting tourists and staycationers and providing mobile tourism information and support. Amongst their duties, they will be handing out the SDG Cornwall Adventure Club Cycle Map while also building out the Ride with GPS platform. This past week, they helped a cycling tourist from Toronto change a flat tire on their bike.
“As COVID-19 restrictions are loosened, more people are enjoying our popular cycling trails,” said Karina Belanger, County tourism coordinator. “Our students have completed their training and will be spending much of their time interacting – while physically distancing – with visitors and cyclists to showcase amenities in and around SDG.” Andy, 18, of Long Sault, will be studying philosophy online via Carleton University this fall. “This job is a great way to give back to the community. It’s great to help people out and talk to them while we’re out there.” Aimee, 20, of Cornwall, is studying nursing at the University of Ottawa. “I’m really enjoying being able to be outside and help people I wouldn’t normally to able to interact with.”

WATER AND SEWER BILLS
www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Seaway News - Wednesday, July 22, 2020 - 5
The region’s two conservation authorities have declared a level one drought in SD&G. The Township of South Stormont encourages all residents to help conserve our precious water resources. Here are a few ways you can do your part: • Water wisely. Water your lawn and garden only every second day and do it early in the morning. Avoid wasting water on sidewalks and other paved areas. • Wash your car only if necessary. • Wash only full loads of laundry. By washing full instead of partial loads, you could save up to 13,600 litres of water a year. • Fix leaks. A leaking faucet can waste up to 11,000 litres of year and a leaking toilet can waste up to 275,000 litres a year. To check your toilet for leaks, add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the water in the tank, but do not flush the toilet. Watch to see if the coloring appears in the bowl within a few minutes. If it does, the toilet has a silent leak that needs to be repaired.

A problem in the parks NICK SEEBRUCH
nseebruch@seawaynews.com

- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
Last week, I weighed in on an issue that I had received a lot of feedback about from readers, noise from vehicles, this week, I want to use this space to talk about another issue I’ve been sent a lot of emails about. Our parks, beaches and other public spaces are a great asset to all of us. The parks of Cornwall and the St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) in the United Counties of SD&G raise the value of our properties, driver tourism, generate tax revenue and that is all without mentioning the positive impact that these outdoor spaces have on the physical and mental health of those who enjoy them. Our enjoyment of these spaces has been hindered in 2020. First, like many other amenities, our parks were closed by the COVID-19 pandemic, now that they are re-opened however, the ability of local residents to enjoy the parks, especially SLPC parks, is being impaired. This past weekend, parks opened at 10 a.m. and I was told by an eye witness that before they were even opened, the beaches along the Long Sault Parkway were already near capacity. Here is one example of a part of a letter sent to me by a reader, who forwarded that letter to local mayors, MPP, the Premier and the SLPC. “The white elephant here that is not being addressed is the cross border travelling of Quebecers in to Cornwall Area
beaches and parks,” the letter reads. “T hey are coming even after being told the Parkway is closed/ the beaches and Parks are closed. They bring their campers and gather in groups larger than 10, they trash the parks, leave their garbage, and because these parks don’t have bathrooms, they have voided and left excrement on the parks grounds, The Quebecers have also gone into local residence backyards to defecate etc.” One eye witness this past Sunday said they did witness many Quebec plates in the parks and beaches at the Long Sault Parkway. They said that they saw one driver pass a car on the Parkway while going 120 km/h putting other drivers and the many cyclists who frequent the Parkway at risk. These individuals also took the liberty of littering the Parkway with garbage thrown from their car window. I want readers to first understand that tourism is a major economic driver in our region, and that we want to be welcoming to our visitors, however, our own residents also should have every right to enjoy parks and beaches that their tax dollars pay for. I believe that many of those who come into our parks and beaches, whether they are from Ontario or Quebec, are good Samaritans. Those who do not respect these outdoor spaces, park rules, and local property must be better, but there will always be bad actors. It is ultimately the responsibility of the provincial government and the SLPC to police these properties to ensure that the
rules are respected for everyone’s enjoyment. Especially in the era of COVID-19 when social distancing is so important our parks should be made safe for us to enjoy. Our local governments took steps to ensure that we can support and enjoy our local businesses and the same must be done for our parks and beaches. Overcrowding, littering, and dangerous and disrespectful behaviour must end. This weekend, MPP Lisa McLeod, provincial Minister of Tourism announced a $7.1 million investment in the SLPC, must use some of this money to hire individuals to patrol the parks. To address the issue of overcrowding, I think that the SLPC should introduce a strict reservation system. Our parks are
more popular than ever because of the COVID-19 pandemic and this hot summer season, that being said, everyone deserves a chance to enjoy them. The system would be first come, first served with a 30-minute grace period for those who are late. Each reservation could be for up to three hours. Things can not continue the way they are for the rest of the summer. Residents of Cornwall and SD&G who pay their taxes to fund these parks are not able to enjoy them the way they should and our local elected officials, such as MPP Jim McDonell, must take steps to address these issues. Garbage and recycling collection will be deferred by one day during that week as a result of the holiday. The Township of South Glengarry continues to offer more great opportunities to enjoy an active and fun summer this year while staying safe as our community continues this journey of reopening. Through everything, it has been encouraging to see our community support one another and the Township, as well as South Glengarry restaurants, retail establishments, and libraries thank you for your continued support and participation in keeping our community a safe place to live, explore, and grow. CORNWALL, Ontario – For the past year and a half Chloe Paquette, 11, has been growing out her hair and has decided to donate it to a good cause. Chloe plans to donate nearly a foot worth of hair to the A Child’s Voice Foundation’s Angel Hair Program, which provides wigs to children fighting cancer. “Every year thousands of Canadian children lose their hair to cancer treatments, alopecia and other medical causes,” reads a statement on A Child’s Voice Foundation website. “At Angel Hair For Kids, we believe the act of providing a wig or hair loss solution will increase a child’s self-esteem and confidence during a difficult time in their young lives.” In addition to donating her hair, she has also been raising money to donate to the foundation. So far, Chloe has raised $500, but hopes to reach a goal of $1,000. “I’ve been thinking about donating my hair to help kids who have cancer, but it wasn’t until my grandfather was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma around my birthday one year, that I decided to commit to the idea,” Chloe wrote in a post on Facebook. “I hope that the use of my hair in a wig can help a child feel better during such a difficult time in their lives. I hope that this will inspire other kids to do the same as me.” Chloe is planning to cut her hair on Friday, July 25. Her parents Kerry Hug and Stephane Paquette are very proud of her. “I’m very very proud of her,” said her mom Kerry. “She has a heart of gold.”

The Payette family, on behalf of Coleen and themselves, would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the amazing medical team who cared for Coleen. From Cornwall: Dr. Youseff, Dr. Vanessa Carter, Dr. Parns, Dr. LePage, Dr. Prevost, Dr. Leigh, Dr. Poilly, Dr. Williams, Dr. Cook, and Dr. Tombler; from Ottawa: Dr. Karanjia and Melanie (Eye institute), Dr. Malone, Dr. Canil, Fatima, the Immunotherapy Team, Dr. Warren, Dr. Ross and Edith (dietabetic coordinator). In addition, our thanks to all of the hospital staff, clerks, nurses, cleaning staff, orderlies and diagnostics technicians, all of whom contribute to the safe environment and care of the patients. Special thanks to go Joanne, Margot and staff at Shoppers Drug Mart here in Cornwall. Your professionalism, compassion and kindness did not go unnoticed. To Sienna, Vanessa, Grace, Rod, Richard and all of the Bayshore staff, nurses and PSWs, we are eternally grateful. The level of TLC, together with the kindness and empathy shown daily provided Coleen the ability to stay in our home as long as possible. To Cornwall Hospice: Angie, Shannon and the incredible team of nurses, volunteers, cleaning and cooking staff. Words are not enough to express the gift you give both to those in your care and their families. From your guidance in preparing for what was to come, to your tenderness in dealing both with Coleen and all of us through the final journey your contributions to the journey were invaluable, and certainly made a difficult road more manageable to bear. The love and care you show daily sets an example for all humanity. Thank you Lee for always making sure Coleen was well manicured - she loved it when you pampered her! Special mention to my Cousin Mary Doran and her husband Jim, by our side every step of the way! Joanne, Coleen’s sister, put many miles on driving back and forth from Toronto to spend time and help us care for Coleen and we are thankful for everything you did. To all of the Carter Clan, without their support and love, the road would have been even rougher. To all my coworkers at G.L.P.A. and Pilots for their ongoing support, my sincere thanks. To the Cornwall Public Library, for all the people that worked and knew Coleen so well and were there to provide support and encouragement, thank you. To the company of Mama Mia who gave of their free time and talent to sing to Coleen at Hospice, and to Tom McLean for orchestrating the surprise, we can only hope you know the joy you brought to her that afternoon. To all our friends and family that have shown so much love and support, Coleen and I will forever be grateful. The flowers, donations, food, and ongoing support has been amazing! With all your calls, food, visits, and so many acts of kindness, we truly were and are blessed, to have so many wonderful people come to our aid when needed.

don’t wear a mask. Personally , I don’t agree with wearing a mask, but this is my personal opinion. It does not make it right or wrong, but just an opinion. Open business or not to open. We have to remember Canada, is or was, a free democratic country with many freedoms, including freedom of choice, and that we should not lose. There has been more damage done to society than the corona virus itself. Some damage can’t or will never be repaired. When I worked in trauma in Ottawa, we never charged OHIP more when extra PPE was used. Maybe some businesses should have been more aware of cleanliness before the virus. Think wisely before criticizing your neighbour!

Shar’s Tip of the Week
Hand dish washing liquids are formulated to facilitate removal of greasy soil from dishes. They also suspend the soil in the wash water to facilitate rinsing. Although a hand dish soap does not have to produce any meaningful amount of suds to be effective at removing soil, suds stability has become accepted as an indication of a product’s remaining cleaning power. Hand dish washing liquids are very versatile. They can be used to clean dirty hands, they can be used to hand laundry clothing and many other stain removal and cleaning purposes.

Making masks and supporting the community NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Chaudry siblings are working to support frontline workers and while supporting families fighting childhood cancer at the same time. On Tuesday, July 14, Osama, Haleema, and Hafsa Chaudhry donated two dozen masks to the Seaway Valley Community Health Centre (SVCHC) that they had made themselves. With the protective face masks, the Chaudhry siblings also delivered some treats from Tim Hortons to make the frontline workers at the health centre’s day a little bit brighter. The Chaudhrys who are 19, 15, and 10 respectively are making and selling masks for $5 a piece with all of the money raised going to the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Suppor t Programs. The Candlelighters help support families who are struggling with expenses related to childhood cancer, such as travel to doctors appointments, and parking at hospitals.
All of the masks are made by the siblings by hand using fabric purchased from local vendors. The masks come in four sizes to fit men, women, and youngsters. “It is heartwarming and so touching to see the youth in our community following the COVID-19 guidelines and supporting all of us,” said Debbie St. John – de Wit, Executive Driector of SVCHC. The Chaudhrys have been raising money for the past few years to support those fighting childhood cancer. Usually they hold their fundraiser in September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, but decided that there was a need now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their Fight for Life fundraiser will be ongoing into September, and contributions can be made through Facebook. The Chaudhrys explained that their reason for doing this fundraiser was not only to help support those fighting COVID-19 and childhood cancer, but also to set an example for other youths with the hope to get more of their contemporaries involved in the community.
Pictured are Haleema, Hafsa, and Osama Chaudry with Seaway Valley Community Health Centre Executive Director Debbie St. John - de Wit. The siblings were donating handmade face masks and Tim Hortons treats to the staff at the centre on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

I would like to see it open as soon as possible,” he said. “I see this as a mental health issue. I see it as an avenue for our residents to get out of their house and skate a few laps.” Rick Ladouceur, South Glengarr y’s Recreation Director pointed to one sport that seemed ready to restart their activities, the skating clubs. “The other thing I wanted to mention was that figure skating is at the head of the class
with being ready to go. Hockey not so much,” said Ladouceur, pointing the ease of enforcing social distancing in a sport like figure skating over a team sport like hockey. Council mused that perhaps the Char-Lan Rec Centre should be opened at the start of the skating season in October. South Glengarry administration will be meeting with neighbouring municipalities and the EOHU to further discuss best practices in re-opening recreation facilities and will return to Council at their next meet in August to present. Ladouceur did note however that re-opening the Rec Centre will see an increase in cleaning costs in the order of $4,000.
