Are you tired? I’m tired It has been an incredibly challenging year for me both personally and professionally. My elderly parents have struggled during this time and I have often felt powerless and unable to make it better for them. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted my plans and forced me to pivot, sometimes weekly, towards whatever needs arose in the moment. From the arrival of Canadian cruise ship passengers at the NAV Centre, to the most recent discussions around the safest way to manage Halloween, I have heard your frustrations, your kindness, your questions, and your worry for the future. It feels as though we are now at a turning point. This second wave is hitting Cornwall hard, at a time when many of you are feeling COVID-restriction fatigue. We are seeing cases in schools, and watching numbers increase locally. Following health restrictions is still so important: please continue to wear your mask, wash your hands, and keep your

distance. Last week, I saw many social media posts about how mental health is being impacted by this pandemic. Isolation, fear, and a disruption of our routines has affected how many of us are feeling. If you are feeling the effects of this pandemic on your mental health, please reach out to a mental health professional or organization for support. Call a friend or a helpline (1-833-456-4566 is the number for the Canada Suicide Prevention Helpline). You are not alone. Do you remember how sidewalk chalk brought us together this spring? I was so moved by the messages of support and uplifting drawings on Cornwall sidewalks and driveways during the first wave. I loved the lit-up hearts on lawns and windows. I hope we can find even more ways of communicating warmth, love, and gratitude as we move into the winter. If you have an idea for how we can stay connected, please email me at bclement@ cornwall.ca or find me on Facebook. Take care.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) have announced that as a part of their partnership with the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), a lane at the Cornwall Port of Entry will be designated for domestic travel only. The new pilot project is expected to begin on Tuesday, Nov. 3 and will run for at least six months. “The concept of a domestic lane has been talked about for several years. I’m pleased to see that a domestic lane pilot project is now being implemented at the Cornwall Port of Entry,” said Grand Chief Abram Benedict. “Wait times are a known contributor to many frustrations while crossing through the port. We hope that by implementing this pilot, wait times will be reduced. I look forward to the implementation, review and feedback from the community. We will continue to work collaboratively with the CBSA on other initiatives to improve the crossing experience.” The new lane will be for those who are passing through the Port of Entry, but have not travelled through the United States to get there. “It includes those who are travelling directly from Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island), such as residents, and any traveller who has travelled to Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) directly from Cornwall, such as visitors, business people, teachers, service vehicles, etc. Domestic

travel can include both Akwesasne residents and non-residents,” reads a statement from the MCA. ““International Travel” is defined as travellers who have been to the United States or transited through the United States (such as from the districts of Kana:takon (St. Regis) and Tsi Snaihne (Snye)). International travel can include both Akwesasne residents and non-residents.” The domestic travel lane will be in what is now Lane 4 at the Port of Entry and will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. After the six month trial period, the initiative will be reviewed and modified as necessary. “The domestic lane pilot is a great example of the ongoing collaboration between the MCA and the CBSA. It will facilitate travel and improve the border crossing experience at the CBSA Cornwall Port of Entry, especially for local residents needing to cross on a regular basis, whether that’s for school, shopping or attending appointments” said John Ossowski, President, Canada Border Services Agency. “This pilot shows what can be accomplished when people talk, listen and work together. It also demonstrates what our shared commitment to the Border Collaboration Initiative can achieve.”

UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario – The United Counties of SD&G in partnership with the OPP and the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) have launched a new initiative to provide mobile expertise for mental health related emergencies. “Mental health-related calls continue to rise in SD&G and the severity of the mental health concerns that police encounter are increasingly more complex. The new Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) will provide early intervention for those who need it. People, not knowing who else to turn to in a mental health crisis, have typically called the police. Previously, police had few options in this type of call,” reads a statement from the OPP. Mental Health Nurse Don Depratto of the

CCH has been patrolling with members of the OPP and responding to mental health related calls since Sept. 28 of this year. Depratto is able to offer risk assessments, mental health assessments, screen for mental illness or substance use, advocate for client care, and more. “(It’s) the perfect blend of two professions working together for the community,” he said. “(I’m)extremely proud of the collaborative efforts and common vision demonstrated by our OPP members, our partners, especially the Cornwall Community Hospital and the United Counties of SD&G to provide an alternate approach of service delivery, thus increasing our service excellence to the community we serve, especially for some of its most vulnerable members,” said S/Sgt. Simon Hardy of the SD&G OPP.

FRONT PAGE STORY

Kinsmen support Legion Poppy campaign PROVIDED BY KINSMEN CLUB OF CORNWALL @R:Since 1933, the Cornwall Kinsmen Club has raised funds through a range of activities and invested these funds in order to meet the Community’s Greatest Needs. These needs change from year to year and thus we adjust the flow of funds accordingly. To assist us in our strategic process we have identified 7 broad categories: Relief of Poverty; Advancement of Education; Culture and the Arts; Health and Welfare; Enhancement of Youth; Enhancement of Public Security and; Community Service. Over the last year, a strategic planning

process was undertaken internally to determine the levels of funding that would be allocated to each of these broad categories. Today’s donation falls under the relief of poverty thrust of our strategy. All community applications received were reviewed by members of the Cornwall Kinsmen Club and a budget for the year was established. Groups may still submit requests during the year for consideration – application form is available on our web site Today we are pleased to announce the 2020/2021 donation to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 Poppy appeal. The Poppy Appeal donations are used to support members of the Armed Forces and the money is divided into various areas of the community. One of the main focuses of the funds is to help with the welfare of Armed Forces

members including rehabilitation courses and career advice for people who have left the service. This donation was increased dramatically this year from previous years given the increased pressures on the Royal Canadian Legion and the effect COVID has caused to their normal fundraising activities. The Cornwall Kinsmen Club would like to encourage all other service clubs that are able and local citizens to think about increasing their support of this worthy cause in 2020. The Kinsmen Club wishes to thank all our community supporters that make these donations possible. Friends! Romans! Lend me your…. Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

We’ve come a long way from the days when the nearly deaf used ear trumpets to help them hear. However, even the best of today’s hearing aids cannot sift out the clutter of background noise in a crowed room. Being in a living room with a hearing-impaired person who is listening to a television newscast can be a painful experience. Today’s ears are forced to multi-task: the ends of the temples of our eyeglasses rest atop our ears; hearing aids and ear buds are inserted in or behind our ears; ear lobes are pierced so that pendants can be hung from them; so that we can minimize the transmission of COVID-19, mask strings are looped around ears. If their ears were as large as those of elephants, some people would probably get them tattooed. I’m sure that in Italy, some have pleaded, “Friends! Romans! Lend me your mask. I want get some gelato in the gelateria, but I left my mask at home.”

We’re here becauseYOU care … Your donations matter. It’s important for charities to demonstrate the truth behind this statement. With the CCHF yearly audit now complete, our team and Board is proud to share a list of urgently needed equipment that will be purchased to support local patients at our Hospital – because donors like you care. Though timelines have slowed across the province (and world) due to COVID-19, the following equipment is either in the process of being secured – or has been secured in 2019/2020 – by CCH thanks to our Hospital Foundation: • A new mammography machine • A cataract microscope for CCH’s surgical eyecare program (in partnership with The Cornwall Lions Club) • A colposcope for women’s health procedures • Portable ECG fleet, pumps and seating for the emergency waiting room area (thanks to fundraising by our CCH Auxiliary)

• A new van to assist staff at St. Denis Centre, Residential Addiction support services • Children’s seating for the Assault and Sexual Abuse Program at CCH • A bariatric bed for palliative patients • A urology table (funded by our Cornwall Kinsmen Club) •… and more items to come Each of us will be touched by our hospital in some way, shape or form over the course of our lifetime. Together, we can help purchase vital equipment so CCH’s physicians and staff can support us, and our loved ones, now and into the future. Over the past few months, I’ve connected with other Executive Directors across Ontario to determine their approach to our charitable landscape, given the broad economic impact of COVID-19. Like me, these leaders feel a depth of gratitude toward their communities for remaining engaged and supporting frontline needs during the pandemic. And, like

No, this will not be a Latin lesson, nor a treatise on Roman history or politics. This week’s discourse will be about the body part that’s most precious, least appreciated, most abused and least recognized. No, it’s not the part that you first thought of, nor is it the one that was your second choice. This week’s 469 words are about one of God’s best gifts to us, the ear. The tongue did not evolve in the embryo until after the ear. It came before the tongue, to remind us that first we must listen to learn a language. We then have to use that language to listen to and learn from those around us. Only after that does the child learn to speak. He reminds us not to overuse our tongue by giving us twice as many ears as

tongues. In the dictionary, and in Wikipedia, ‘hear’ comes first, then ‘listen’, only then followed by ‘talk’. Another reason for giving us two ears is so we could enjoy the wonders of stereophonic sound. We learn to locate a singing bird or an oncoming threat by virtue of having not just one hearing receptacle but two. I’ve had the pleasure of studying how a fox rotates its head and changing the angles of its ears to determine the exact location of its prey hidden in the tall grass. Today’s ears are being abused. Rock concerts have a decibel register greater than the Concorde’s. Without any ear protection people operate lawn mowers, chain saws, vacuum cleaners, leaf blowers, boom boxes, power boats, tractors and dirt bikes. Some have their ear buds emitting such a volume of sound that can be heard from the other end of the room. Without ear guards, deafness can occur. Impaired hearing is socially isolating.

South Glengarry Council is between a rock and a hard place. On the one side are the supporters of Cooper Marsh, who want to protect their greenspace and the wildlife who live there. On the other is a potential development of land abutting the marsh, and South Glengarry Council caught in in the middle. A local property developer, Weaving Baskets Group (WBG), is petitioning South Glengarry Council to rezone land adjacent to the marsh so that they can develop it into a new campsite with 25 spots for caravan camping. The Conservators of Cooper Marsh warn that this development will harm this wetland area and the animals who depend on it as a habitat. Specifically, that area of the marsh is a nesting site to several bird species such as the Least bittern and the Virginia rail which they say cannot be found in other parts of the region. I have sympathy for the position of the Conservators of Cooper Marsh. Our green space is precious. Not only are green spaces essential to wildlife, but they help promote physical and mental health to the people who enjoy them as well. Woods, wetlands, green space, these things truly are precious if for no other reason than this, there won’t be more green space made. Our supply of wild areas shrinks every day, so when a forest is cut down, or a wetland cleared, it’s gone. Whenever development encroaches on these spaces, serious thoughts should be given to its preservation. That being said, the developer in this case is not developing on the land of Cooper Marsh, they are on private property. To their credit, the developers have met with the Conservators of Cooper Marsh and representatives from the Township of South Glengarry and have attempted to address any concerns. “During his process we have retained Fotenn Planning Consultants, and Beacon Environmental Engineers to ensure that there would be no negative impacts to our property, the neighboring properties, any species, or the environment surround the property (St. Lawrence River, floodplains, and Wetlands) by performing an Environmental Impact Study,” wrote Tom Hughes, Vice President of WBG in an email to Seaway News. “This report from Beacon Environmental was required by the Township and the RRCA, and it has proven that there will be no negative or harmful impacts to the environment or any species.” Furthermore, WBG have stated that the land that they intend to develop is 400 ft. away from the property line with the Marsh, and that they are willing to work with the Conservators on educational signs informing their patrons of the environmental significance of the wetlands. Those who oppose the planned campsite are asking South Glengarry Council to not approve the rezoning of the land, there by blocking the development. It isn’t that easy though. Even if Council wanted to block the development, they could open the Township up to costly legal jeopardy if they did so. WBG dotted their “i”s and crossed their “t”s. As stated above, WBG has already done the environmental impact study, they followed the procedure to have this land re-zoned. So, if WBG has followed the rules, then it would be arbitrary of South Glengarry Council to deny their request. My view outlined above about South Glengarry Council not being in a position to refuse WBG’s rezoning request isn’t held by myself alone, members of South Glengarry Council understand this as well. “While I understand there are definitely concerns from residents, but if they (the developers) are following provincial regulations who are we to put up a roadblock,” said Deputy Mayor Warden in an interview with Seaway News at the end of September. “If we turn it down, it will probably go to the LPAT (Local Planning Appeal Tribunal) where it would likely be overturned anyway.” Ultimately, I think that the only ones who can stop the development, are WBG themselves. They have already shown a willingness to work with the Conservators on this issue. Hopefully if the Conservators and WBG can get together again compromise will prevail and an agreement can be found that everyone can live with. As far as South Glengarry Council goes though, I think their hands are tied. What’s your opinion on the situation at Cooper Marsh? Email me a Letter to the Editor at nseebruch@seawaynews.media

Think of small businesses Dear Editor, This is in regard to Cornwall going into a “modified Stage Two.” A good many small businesses are just hanging on by a thread as it is, and this will hurt them even more. The big-box stores are laughing as it is not going to hurt them at all. If the EOHU is so confident that masks protect people, then why are they threaten-

ing to close certain things down again. Small family-owned businesses should protest against this as nobody is going to help them if they lose their business. The COVID numbers will rise and fall, we just have to wear our masks and ride it out. Yours truly, Mrs. C. Campbell, Cornwall, Ontario

Have we all gone mad? Dear Editor, While doing groceries, I noticed a senior citizen (75+) not wearing a mask. I was horrified and turned down another aisle to avoid him. I am also a senior and know that COVID19 could be very dangerous for me and my loved ones. Cornwall has been doing so well in avoiding high numbers of infection. This in turn reduces stress for our frontline workers and keeps our local economy going. Ninety-nine point nine per cent of citizens are doing their bit to protect themselves and others. Children in schools wear masks for eight hours ever day, so wearing a mask for 15-20 minutes in a busy store is not a big sacrifice. If you’ve got a “mask exemption” from a doctor, this does not protect you from the ravages of COVID. In fact, your risk is higher,

especially if you have respiratory problems. Doctors should consider their liability surrounding this issue. Stores should stand firm on not allowing people without masks to enter their building. <@Rb>Your building, your rules!<@$p> The manager of a hardware store told me last week there is push back towards employees. Really? It would only take a few to be ejected for word to get around. By not doing so, employees and customers are at risk. I and others are surprised at the weakness store managers exhibit when it comes to protecting 99.9 per cent of their clients. I’ll support businesses that make wearing a mask mandatory. There is a story of a mother attending a United States Military Academy (West Point) graduation who announced to all within ear shot as the 200 cadets marched past, “How about that. All the cadets except my Johnny are out of step.” So it is with the small but vocal group of de-maskers who rail against the use of face-masks, claiming they are a health risk, while medical/scientific evidence is paraded before the public that masks are safe and a key front-line tool in the COVID-19 protection kit. The science supporting the three pillars in the fight against COVID-19 – masks, social distancing and hand washing – is overpowering. Medical experts worth his or her salt – and that includes most of the world’s top epidemiologists – agree that masks help reduce the spread. Even Trump’s health secretary is on board. Many in the anti-mask camp have arrived from the anti-vaccine/conspiracy movement. Think of where we would be without vaccines for polio, smallpox, yellow fever and measles. _________________________________ Prominent Ottawa defence lawyer J. C. Counties court room. In the pre-dawn hours of July 31 Roodman had left his broken down truck parked on the side of the shoulderless stretch of highway without any lights on. An eastbound Colonial Coach bus crashed into the truck and rolled into the Williamsburg Canal. Only 17 passengers, including the driver, survived. It remains one of North America’s most deadly bus cras hes. Horowitz said his 40-year-old client had the mental age of a 12 year old. “He should not have received a driver’s licence (from the provincial department of transport),” said Horowitz. Persons who apply for a driver’s licence in Ontario should have to pass an “intelligence test,” said Horowitz. The brother of the accused, an Ottawa dentist and the only witness called by the defence, testified that his brother lacked the intelligence to be driving a truck. He was surprised that his brother was able to get a driver’s licence. Horowitz described the narrow, curvefilled Highway 2 between the Quebec border and Brockville a “death trap” and said it contributed to the accident. It was the main highway between Montreal and Toronto. Highway 401 replaced it years later. After just 60 minutes, the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Before sentencing Roodman to one year in reformatory, Justice Barlow said he agreed with the defence lawyer that persons applying for a driver’s licence in Ontario should undergo a “mental test.” ALSO THIS WEEK IN 1953 – The screams of clerk Loretta Denis scared off a would-be robber. The man entered the Adelard Denis grocery store at 302 Sixth St. W brandishing what appeared to be a revolver. He demanded the money in the cash register.

Honouring those who served and sacrificed

5 facts about Remembrance Day On November 11, Remembrance Day ceremonies are held across the country to honour the courage of Canadians who fought to defend our way of life. Here are five facts to help you better understand this important occasion. 1. The First World War officially ended on November 11, 1918, with the signing of an armistice agreement. This occurred at precisely 11 a.m. — that is, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

4. Remembrance Day is celebrated by a number of other Commonwealth member states, including the United Kingdom and Australia, as well as other countries such as France, Belgium and Poland. 5.Canada’s National Remembrance Day Ceremony is held in Ottawa at the National War Memorial. The event is presided over by the Governor General and is attended by the prime minister, veterans’ organizations and the general public.

AN EASY WAY TO HONOUR OUR VETERANS From the last Friday in October

until November 11, Canadians are encouraged to purchase and wear a poppy. This is an easy way to show you remember those who died for their country. Additionally, donating to the Poppy Campaign directly supports Canadian veterans and their families.

GERALD CHARLEBOIS - OLIVER CHARLEBOIS - ANDRE CHARLEBOIS 3 Brothers Overseas - Shawn Runions for my grandfather Andre Charlebois Over one million Canadians served in the Second World War. More than 45,000 gave their lives and another 55,000 were wounded. Three brothers from Cornwall. Andre, Jerry, and Oliver Charlebois serviced and survived WW2. But they were not destined to come home immediately after V-E Day, May 8th 1945. There was still work to be done. Andre Charlebois, who had been wounded in Holland, recovered and stayed on with Occupation Force guarding the trains that ran supplies to Berlin. Gerald Charlebois was stationed in Italy with the Medical Corps. His ship had been torpedoed in the Mediterranean Sea. Jerry was one of the last to leave after providing medical assistance to those unable to go home immediately. Oliver Charlebois was with the Air Force. After the war he took on the tough job of protecting German war criminals at the Nuremberg Trials. Today the youngest, Andre Charlebois is the last surviving brother. At the age of 94 he lives independently at home in Cornwall. He asks that everyone during this pandemic time to remember the sacrifice of those who have died for Canada. Be proud of the military men and women who are representing Canada around the world.

Veterans’ Week, which runs from November 5 to 11, is an opportunity for Canadians to pay tribute to the extraordinary sacrifices made by our nation’s soldiers. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Veterans’ Week is taking place online. As a result, more people will have the chance to participate in the events. A SHARED MESSAGE The National Veterans’ Week Speakers Program has asked current members of the Canadian Armed Forces to deliver segments of this year’s Veterans’ Week speech. The resulting video collage will be played in schools and community organizations across the country during Veterans’ Week. A COMMON HISTORY Every year, Veterans Affairs Canada highlights a significant exploit in Canadian military history. In 2020, the event being commemorated is Victory over Japan (V-J) Day, when Japan surrendered to the Allies, effectively ending the Second World War. This year is the 75th anniversary of V-J Day, which occurred on August 15, 1945. On that day, crowds gathered in the streets in Canada and allied nations to celebrate the end of the war in the Pacific and an international conflict that had lasted six years. Do you want to join the conversation about the anniversary of this historic event? Use the hashtags #CanadaRemembers, #VJDay75 and #EndofSWW on social media. Clean-up day at Summerstown Trails PROVIDED BY FRIENDS OF THE SUMMERSTOWN TRAILS SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The fact that there was not a cloud in the sky and no wind made you (almost) forget how cold it was last Saturday for the annual Trails Clean-up Day organized by the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST). For the record, it was minus four degrees when FOTST president Vic Leroux got the activity going at 9.00 a.m. Speaking of records, the turnout was impressive with no less than 32 FOTST members and friends taking part in this activity. Among those were a few students from La Citadelle H.S. who came to fulfill some of their volunteer hour obligation. Unfortunately, or fortunately for the participants, they had less work to do on the trails this year. President Leroux explained that as a consequence of the COVID situation, there has been a sharp increase in the number or users at the trails in the past months. “I guess the people clear the branches off the trails as they are walking and biking the trails. The bikers are especially

conscious of the eye-catchers and break them off.” assumed President Leroux. He then went on to add that there was virtually no garbage (cans, wrappers, etc.) on the trails. “This is surprising given the increase in user traffic. I see this as a change in public mentality, with more people following the garbage in, garbage out principle.” concluded Vic Leroux. Still, the Clean-up Day is a necessary activity in order to make sure that the 20-plus kilometres of trails are made safe for the users. With the help of health professionals, the Friends of the Summerstown Trails has adopted a COVID plan for their organized activities and events. This plan meets the requirements and recommendations of the Government of Ontario and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. This was done in order to provide a safe environment for the FOTST volunteers and members and for all those who use the trails. The trails are situated on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north La Citadelle High School students Elissah Bergeron of exit 804 of the 401. Visit the FOTST website at www.summer- and Owen St.Louis, with FOTST member stowntrails.com and Facebook page for more information. Jake Villemaire. Submitted photo.

Talk about a big fish story. Direct Muffler owner Denis Lafave sent us this photo of him with this once in a life time catch. That is one big muskie. Lafave used a custom lure to hook the big fish, and it bent his net when he brought it in. The muskie was returned to the water unharmed.

CELEBRATING

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) in partnership with the Summerstown Coyote Nordiq Club to hold weekly cross country ski racing, or skate skiing sessions. The sessions will be lead by National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) instructor René Sauvé. “As per Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSSA) competition format, this program will be about skate skiing, a fast and fluid form of cross-country skiing which requires coordination, balance and stamina,” he said, adding that the courses will be opened to new, and experi-

enced skiers alike. “The Summerstown trails provide the perfect setting to offer this new program: it’s outdoors, our main trail is more than two metres wide and we have developed a COVID master plan in order to offer a safe environment to our volunteers and participants in which to conduct our activities. This plan meets the requirements of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU),” said FOTST President Vic Leroux. The course will be held Saturdays at 10 a.m. at the Summerstown trails beginning on Nov. 14 with dry-land training. Ski rental equipment is available, but limited.
