WHAT ARE YOUR
Final wishes? QUELLES SONT VOS
Dernières volontés? My final wish at the end of my life is to be honoured in a way that is important to me and meaningful to my loved ones whom I leave behind to mourn my death. More importantly, my final wish is to derive satisfaction from the way I chose to live my life.
My final wish at the end of my life is to be able to look back on a good life, a full life, a life well lived.
Ma dernière volonté est de pouvoir réaliser que j’ai vécu une bonne vie, une vie bien remplie.
My final wish at the end of my life is to know that I loved without barriers. That I loved with intention and purpose, and that I allowed myself to be loved in the same way. That I am able to die with an abundance of this love in my heart, and that I leave this love in the hearts of those I leave behind.
My final wish at the end of my life is to know that I lived a life with purpose and meaning that has impacted the lives of the people who surrounded me. My final wish at the end of my life is to know that I left no stone unturned. That I uttered every word of forgiveness needed, and that I asked for forgiveness when it was needed, so that I can die with peace in my heart, and my loved ones too can have peace in theirs with no regrets.
My final wish at the end of my life is to leave this world with ripples for generations to come because of how I loved and lived my life. To perpetuate my legacy in the hearts of many generations after me.
My final wish at the end of my life is to die in a dignified, supportive and loving state both for myself and for the loved ones who surround me at my bedside. To create open and honest conversations about the emotional, mental, spiritual, physical and practical matters that play such a significant part in the passage from life to death.

Cornwall Living promotes success Cornwall’s future has never looked better. Cornwall’s economic base continues to grow and the demand for more employees has never been higher. Investment continues to flow into existing and new facilities. Our cover story profiles the changing face of Cornwall – the people who have made Cornwall their home and have worked hard to succeed. They are our future. Available jobs are attracting people from around the world to our city and region. Cornwall is a community that accepts and works with visible minorities; and with St. Lawrence College training our youth, our workforce will only get stronger. It's always a great feeling to publish stories from across our community about
local people and businesses. In its 28th year, Cornwall Living once again features some amazing stories and photographs, touching on all aspects of life in the area – including business, sports, arts and the success of individuals in all walks of life. 2022 saw continuing support from both senior levels of government to support local businesses, including support for the agri-food sector. More people are calling Cornwall home; the 2021 population tally sits at 47,845 - the highest ever! Ontario is funding 143 new and 113 upgraded long-term care beds in Cornwall and Lancaster. The River Institute will be studying the ecological impact of waves and shoreline
erosion on near shore habitat in the St. Lawrence River. Seaway News - Cornwall's weekly community newspaper since 1985 - has covered the region's major news stories for 4 decades, and I can say without a doubt that our hard work as business owners and neighbours, teachers and health care professionals, is now paying off as we build vibrant, active and welcoming communities. When Seaway News published the first Cornwall Living magazine in 1994 I knew we were on to something special, and the last 28 years has proven me correct. To be successful you need a great team and this edition I dedicate once again to the entire Seaway News staff, with a special shout out to Colleen Parette who enhances the contributions of so many with world-class design. To Bob Peters - who has helped shape our vision, thank you. You have the dedication, spirit and drive to make Cornwall a better place to live, to work and raise a family. I have enjoyed every hour we have collaborated to make these award-winning magazines not only reader-friendly but more importantly an annual testament to the people who make our community so rich. To read Cornwall Living is to walk in the greatest place in Ontario where you feel at home and fit right in. Housing, waterfront, employment, recreation, small business, and smiles…enjoy your stay within our pages. It’s been fun, thank you.

CHOOSE CORNWALL UPDATES NEW DEVELOPMENT COMING TO THE CORNWALL BUSINESS PARK The Cornwall Business Park has never been more attractive to companies looking to invest in Eastern Ontario. The City has recently sold over 300 acres and is working towards extending roads and services to accommodate new development. “We are very happy to welcome new investment in the Cornwall Business Park, which will lead to new assessment and new jobs,” says Mayor Glen Grant. “Council has worked with City administration to ensure that we maintain a ready supply of employment lands and this strategy is achieving the desired result of new development.” The Cornwall Business Park is located in the eastern part of the city, immediately adjacent to Highway 401. At well over 1,600 acres, it is home to some of Canada’s largest distribution centres, award-winning manufacturers, innovative food processers – along with some great transportation companies. Many of Cornwall’s largest employers are located in the Business Park and are constantly reinvesting and expanding their operations. This activity has attracted the interest of other companies, and along with near zero availability of built space, has meant that new investors are
increasingly turning to building new facilities. “Cornwall enjoys a strategic location in Central Canada with excellent transportation linkages which makes it ideal for logistics, manufacturing and food processing operations,” says Bob Peters of Cornwall Economic Development. “The business community has dozens of companies and organizations that are in place to support new development, a willing workforce that can help a company meet its goals, and a friendly community that welcomes growth and investment.” Recent land sales provide a
specified period of time for the purchaser to undertake due diligence efforts and as such, development of the lands in question will take place over the next number of years. About the Cornwall Business Park Fully serviced land in the Business Park is currently for sale at $75,000 per acre, making it some of the most affordable land in Ontario. The Park is zoned to include a wide range of manufacturing and commercial uses. A detailed map and brochure of the Cornwall Business Park are available on www.ChooseCornwall.ca

CORNWALL… EVER EVOLVING » BY NICK SEEBRUCH
One of the strengths of the Cornwall community is its diversity. Some of the most important moments in Cornwall’s history have turned on the issue of diversity. One of the longest serving mayor’s in the City’s history was Aaron Horovitz who, when elected became the first Jewish mayor in the history of Ontario. Bob Turner was not just the City of Cornwall’s first black employee, but also the first black recreation director in the history of the province if not the country. His struggle against bigotry and racism in Cornwall became one of the defining moments in the City’s history. In 2018 Cornwall experienced another milestone in its history when it elected the first black female mayor in the history of Ontario, Bernadette Clement. In 2021, Clement was elevated to the Senate of Canada. “Cornwall has gone through a lot of change and it has been exciting to see that happen, and my election was a small part of that,” Clement said. Clement explained how diversity
adds to a community’s strength. “Diversity brings more people to the decision table. The more diversity you have, the greater the complexity you have in your solutions,” she said. “It is also a sign of maturity in a community,” she said. Clement reflected on the issues of diversity that the community had faced in the past four years, including challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, and growing awareness around Indigenous issues.
“Since 2018 there has been such intense change in the world, and you have seen Cornwall keep up with that,” said Clement. Clement believes that Cornwall is continuing to become a more diverse community as new residents move into the city. “We have to make sure that we are welcoming,” she said. “I think we need to invite people to the table. Community members have to go to their neighbours, and groups and team members and invite them into the conversation. When I came to Cornwall 31 years ago that is how it worked for me. They invited me into their homes.” “I am really proud of Cornwall,” Clement concluded. “I chose Cornwall 31 years ago, I still choose it, and they chose me back. Diversity is how we will remain competitive and continue to grow as a community,” she concluded. There are a range of organizations in the city that celebrate, promote, and advocate for individuals of diverse backgrounds.
cornwall LIVING 2022

One such organization is Diversity Cornwall, which supports individuals from the LGBTQ+ communities. Steph Coleman is a transgendered man who is a member of the board of Diversity Cornwall. Coleman explained what diversity means to him. “I think that having lived here all my life and coming into my own later in life, it comes down to the word ‘inclusion’ and being able to be who you are without bias,” he said. Coleman said that over his years living in Cornwall, he has seen how the community has become more diverse, in the number of young families moving to Cornwall, and in the growing diversity of its elected representatives. “We need to keep looking for ways to include everybody and I think that this is the only way for a community to thrive in my opinion,” he said. Some of the ways that Diversity Cornwall as an organization has worked to promote diversity in Cornwall is through its programming, including the organization of the annual Pride festival, and through their Gender Affirmation Program, which helps connect trans individuals to services they can use to feel more comfortable with who they are.

Much like diversity itself, the advocacy of community diversity comes in many different forms and voices in the Cornwall community. Another voice is that of Raheem Aman. Aman is of Barbados, Jamaican, and African ancestry. He lives in Cornwall with his wife, and is currently training to become a full-time member of the Cornwall Police Services. In 2019, he stood in the federal election as the candidate for the Green Party in the riding of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. In 2019, Aman helped found the African Caribbean Cultural Society of Cornwall, a group he says has grown rapidly in the few short years since its founding. “We came together, recognizing a lack of a community for our particular culture,” Aman said. “We felt that community was important and so we set out to create a solution to what we perceived to be missing. A space for members of our community to speak freely about our thoughts, beliefs, and opinions on cultural hot topics, issues, and occasions for celebration. A space to be able to carry out some of our unique cultural traditions, such as Kwanzaa, and much more.” Aman explained that the African
josiane
Caribbean Cultural Society works to promote diversity by practicing and promoting culture and dispelling stereotypes. “We showcase our African and Caribbean culture in a unique way,” he said. “We distinguish who we are from how pop culture often portrays members of our community, which is a large part of the reason we are so poorly received by the average North American. We are promoting diversity through many different ways, including fresh approaches to literature, spirituality, religion, language, folkways, mores, and norms. We create and publicly celebrate our own cultural holidays and persons of special interest to us. We show the power in coming together to do something good for a positive change and meaningful impact on society.” Being a force for positive change and solving racial disparities is also one of the reasons that Aman chose to run for political office and become a police officer. “I was motivated to run for office to put into practice the concepts I had been studying throughout high school, university, and independently,” he said. “To try to make a difference in regards to the environment in which we live and to ensure that a politician
was more than someone merely trying to maximize votes. I was motivated to serve the community as a police officer to solve the racial disparity in how some members of the community were interacted with. There is much work to be done here throughout North America and I want to be a part of the solution rather than complain from the sidelines.” Much like the African Caribbean Cultural Society of Cornwall, Association Des Femmes Immigrantes Francophones Cornwall-SDG (AFIF) is a relatively new organization that has seen rapid growth in demand for its services and programs. Started in 2020, AFIF has grown to include Francophone immigrants from Africa, Europe, Quebec, as well as having members who are native to Cornwall. “Diversity is a fact, inclusion is a choice,” said Josiane of AFIF. Josiane also highlighted how diversity in Cornwall is a strength by bringing together people of different backgrounds and experiences. The Coalition for Unity, Respect, Equity/Equality for All (CUREA) was founded in Cornwall and advocates for a more integrated and equitable community. “Diversity is important because we live in a diverse society. Diversity, however, is the lowest achievable bar for which we can strive. We can exist in a diverse community while those who have been historically minoritized continue to experience inequities and exclusion. Diversifying your community or your workplace is not the be all, end all solution to systemic oppression,” explained Stacey Ottley, a board member with CUREA. “We need to work towards true equity and inclusion in all aspects of social life. Everyone has a role to play when it comes to eliminating systemic oppression. Anti-oppressive practices and frameworks need to be at the forefront of everything we do, and it needs to come from the top down. In my observation, decisionmakers (those with the power to affect meaningful change) are the least likely to put in the necessary effort. If they did, organizations like CUREA would not need to exist,” Ottley added. Ottley challenged community leaders to use existing research and data, include the views and perspectives of oppressed individuals and groups, critique and change existing practices, include ongoing reflection and evaluation of current practices, and invest the necessary finances and lead the efforts to build an anti-oppressive framework for the community. Cornwall is a growing city. According to the 2021 Canadian Census, Cornwall sat at a total population of 47,845 at the time the census was taken, the highest population number Cornwall has ever reached. Whether from within Canada or from overseas, people are moving to Cornwall and the city is becoming more diverse. Organizations like the ones showcased here will play an important part in guiding Cornwall to a more diverse future.
From Sri Lanka with love
» BY SUE STEWART
In 1993, Dr Rachel Navaneelan, along with her late husband Dr. Christie Navaneelan and 2 young children, decided to start a new chapter in their lives and move to Cornwall. She opened up what is now known as a highly respected and very successful dental practice. In 2004, tragedy struck in Rachel’s native country of Sri Lanka. A deadly tsunami left thousands of children orphaned and/or displaced. Rachel immediately took action by holding a charity auction and garden party to raise funds to assist the victims. The event was so successful that it turned into an annual fundraiser which, over the last 18 years, has helped rebuild many schools and orphanages in Sri Lanka. Through her leadership, the people of Cornwall and area have helped supply food, clothing, and educational supplies - giving the opportunity for education to hundreds. As Rachel’s volunteer team grew, the needs of local families did not go unnoticed. Generous donations gave a bit of financial freedom to families who were struggling to make life a little better to that child who is battling a life threatening or terminal disease. For three decades Dr. Rachel has been a philanthropic force for good. Her efforts have touched the lives of so many people here - and abroad. Her true legacy is the path of kindness that she forged, so that others may now follow. We are thankful and appreciate the fact that she is a huge part of our community.

FINDING YOUR INNER ARTIST » BY FRANCIS RACINE
The Cline House Gallery and Studio will once again be booming with activity within the next few months. Emily MacLeod, who recently joined the City of Cornwall as Visual Arts Coordinator, has been tasked with transforming the Victorian space into a hub for the visual arts and already, things look very promising. The front of the building will once more be home to a gallery. There, aspiring and professional artists alike will have the chance to feature their works of art in rotations. Although the gallery will of course be open to local artists, it will also welcome exhibits from all over the country. Already, artists from as far as Toronto have expressed their eagerness to not only showcase

their art in the space but also provide locals with workshops. “The whole goal of this is to create community connections, raise the cultural profile of the city and build awareness of Cornwall’s support of the arts,” said MacLeod. “We want
to establish Cornwall as a premiere visual arts destination in Eastern Ontario.” Already, an impressive textile exhibit has confirmed that it will make a Cornwall stop on its journey from Vancouver to Newfoundland. Albeit exciting, the gallery isn’t the only amenity that is sure to make local artists rejoice. A spacious workshop studio, located at the rear of the building, will also assist in fostering and maintaining creative community connections. Various workshops are scheduled to be offered, as well as open studio and easel times. These will be easily booked, thanks to the city’s Perfect Mind system. Artists will also have the chance to book a spot in person.

Having been an art educator, a small business owner and above all else an artist, MacLeod knows full well the value that arts and culture bring to a community. “I see how people thrive when they come to workshops, explore different mediums and styles and when they are instructed by artists that have a lot to share about their own professional practices,” she said. “I can also see how the gallery will be a tourist draw and help the local economy.” “There is always a need for local artists to be celebrated and exhibited and this will provide a dedicated space for that.” Programming at the Cline House Gallery and Studio is set to cover many genres — from painting to sculpture and
30

photography, just to name a few. Both seasoned and emerging artists will be more than welcome to join. Children’s programming is also being scheduled for the summer. Future artists will also have the chance to be mentored through workshops and activities. The goal, according to MacLeod, is to create an artistic development circle and open studio times for artists and students looking to develop their careers as professional artists. Yet it isn’t just visual arts that will be celebrated at the gallery and studio — so too will intimate cultural events, such as book signings, poetry readings and small concerts. The space will also offer a general event and meeting rental space for private celebrations, fundraisers, retirements, and anniversaries. Through all these exciting initiatives, the Cline House Gallery and Studio will position itself as a cultural destination that will in turn attract a population of tourists whose lifestyles will support the local artistic community, culture, and economy. The program will also allow for several opportunities to collaborate with other heritage attractions, the first being the annual Doors Open event that takes place in August. Offering access to the Cline House — itself a designated heritage site — will bring to life Cornwall’s history and show the city’s pride in the preservation of its local history. With the importance that art and culture plays in everyday lives, it’s no wonder that it occupies an important place in the city’s Strategic Tourism Plan. “It’s mentioned quite a lot,” said MacLeod, “and here is a great big piece of that puzzle.” Programming at the Cline House starts in late Spring of 2022. www.Cornwall.ca

Insider Tips FOR NAILING THAT
INTERVIEW
COVER LETTERS, RESUMÉS, CLEAN SHIRTS, OH MY!
NICOLE TE ET BISSONN It seems like there are as many ways to apply for a job as there are jobs. The end goal, however, remains the same. Follow these tips to give yourself the best shot at getting noticed, and how to excel once you get that interview. How long should a resumé be? • If you're applying for a general labour position, logistics position, or a production position, a 1-2 page resumé is fine • For technical, management or leadership positions, the resumé can be longer (2-3 pages)
We reached out to Nicole Bissonnette and Dawn Jerome from Biscuits Leclerc in Cornwall to help local job seekers. The two seasoned HR professionals provided the following answers to frequently asked questions.
What are the most common mistakes applicants make? • Incomplete or incorrect resumés (lying on resumé, omitting education, gaps in employment history, etc.) • Being a no-show or late to the interview. (Especially if you don't call to let the interviewer know!) • Excessive phone calls, emails to the recruiter (multiple times per day/week) • Giving an answer to a question that is clearly memorized from a textbook as opposed to expressing your own thoughts
• Be sure to include job history, including dates, education and other transferrable skills
• Providing inappropriate references, incomplete contact information and not contacting the references prior to giving their names
How important is a cover letter?
• Avoiding answering the question or outright lying during the interview
• A cover letter is a must when applying for any management or leadership position • It is preferable for a technical position and nice to have but not necessary for an entry level position What is an employer really looking for from an employee? • Enthusiasm • Positive attitude • Capable and willing to learn • Transferrable skills and/or experience • Someone looking for a career not a job
What should I do to prepare for an interview? • Research the job and learn as much as you can about the company • Visit corporate website • Learn how to perform well during interviews (free courses are available locally) • Prepare for questions on how your skills match the job, and have answers ready to go for questions relating to your experience • Arrive a few minutes early • Dress in clean and presentable attire
DAWN JEROME Where do I find available jobs? • Most jobs are posted online • Visit local recruitment websites (ChooseCornwall Job Board, local media, career pages, etc.) • Visit the career sections on the corporate websites of local employers • Visit general recruitment websites such as Indeed and JobBank.gc.ca • Speak with local employment agencies (JobZone, GIAG, etc.) I don’t think I have the right skills for the job. Should I still apply? • Absolutely! It never hurts to apply. The company may be hiring for fit, not for skills or experience • Most companies are willing to train • You may fit a role that is not advertised Final Thoughts/Advice: • Be prepared • Be able to sell yourself for the job you want • Communicate with confidence and most importantly, be honest! Biscuits Leclerc, along with other local employers, are currently recruiting to fill over 500 available positions. Visit www.ChooseCornwall.ca to view current job postings and download the Cornwall Career Guide.

eritage Heights Retirement Home is now developing an expansion to their current building called Heritage Suites, including 80 private suites for senior residents who want to live more independently. The suites are intended to be ready this summer of 2022. The owner, Dean Rushlow, purchased Heritage Manor Retirement Home in 2010, and Heritage Heights Retirement Home in 2012. Dean has used his experience in this field to introduce a new senior residence to Cornwall and SD&G. He feels that it is important to give seniors the opportunity to live out their retirement in comfort, while receiving the support they deserve. Dean plays an active role in the community, from supporting organizations in need, to being an active member of the Cornwall & Area Chamber of Commerce, as he is very interested, and passionate in the economic growth, and prosperity of Cornwall. Dean has actively been part of the development of the new home. From planning, design, and con-
struction phases of the Home, he has made it a family affair; you can find Dean and his sons most times on the construction site. While his wife Corry is actively developing the interior design and décor. An important part of Dean’s team is Heritage Heights and Heritage Manor’s General Manager, Sue Crepeau. “I’m very proud to be able to offer this to our great community,” said Sue. “It’s what our seniors want and deserve, to live comfortably, feel safe and cared for in an environment that enriches their lives.” Sue takes pride in her work and is very excited
to take on the role of continuing to assist seniors with this new project. “It’s the simple things in life that really mean the most, and if that comes easy by waking up every morning eager and willing to help people, then I have it made, it’s that simple.” There are several suite layouts offered, from one bedroom with walkin closets to open concept suites. Prices will be comparative and vary from square footage, balcony/view. Cable, phone, and Wi-Fi will be included. All suites will have kitchenettes, fireplaces, and panic buttons. The home will have 24-hour surveillance for the safety of our seniors and will be staffed 24/7 by professional health care staff. Heritage Suites will be offering their seniors many amenities, which include, three meals daily, pampering in their hair/nail salon, staying fit by using their gym, or participating in several social activities/programs, even play a round of golf just next door. Do you dream of becoming your own boss? Every year more and more entrepreneurs are choosing to open small businesses in our area. These small business owners play a large role in the strength and vibrancy of our community. But what does it take to launch a successful business? There are key elements that all successful businesses share. The Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre (CBEC) works with entrepreneurs when starting, growing or purchasing a business. The CBEC team works closely with Starter Company Plus participants to ensure they have the tools and support to succeed locally and expand to outside markets. Chelsea Malyon from Bend & Snap is a local maker that has taken her small home business to the next level. “Bend & Snap has always been bright, and playful, said Malyon. We like to use fabric with fun patterns that are attractive to children, but are also festive and fun for adults to wear.” In 2021, while trying to source a specific kind of fabric, Maylon found a gap in the market and seized the opportunity to expand their product line to include a wholesale division called Oh Snap Supply. Oh Snap Supply now distributes quality leather fabric to bow makers across Canada and the US. The company continues to sell through their online shop and the products can be found in retailers across Canada. Within the last year five new team members have come on board allowing the company to accept more orders and expand their market share. To help the company scale up production the Starter Company Plus micro-grant provided funding for additional equipment to increase marketing and make order fulfillment more efficient.

The Starter Company Plus micro-grant has also helped launch Greenlock. Brothers Andre and JeanGuy Grandmaison are urban farmers in Cornwall who have created an online subscription service to supply their members with freshly grown micro-greens grown indoors. Greenlock’s primary product is The Mighty Mix. The ready to eat microgreens is a mixture of Sunflower, Dun Peas, Radish, and Broccoli. These microgreens provide up to 40 times the nutrients of their fully matured plants, making them a popular food choice amongst healthy individuals. “Micro-greens go with everything! You can eat them raw, put them in a salad or in a smoothie.” “I really like stuffing some of the microgreens right into a BBQ burger patty”, explained Andre. It just adds something else to the flavour.” Participating in the Starter Company Plus program provided the Grandmaisons with the support they needed to prepare their business plan which included a strategy to expand their online store into the retail market. Recently, Greenlock secured space in two local grocery stores: Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer in Cornwall and Épicerie Henderson's Grocery in Lancaster. “We believe that Cornwall is uniquely located in Eastern Ontario and can be a staple town for the future of green technology and sustainable agriculture” explained Jean-Guy. As retail stores shake off the last two years of shut downs, the new owners of Bud’s Records and Kool Things are ready to welcome music lovers into their
40

downtown Cornwall record shop. Jason Lavoie and Emily Restoule purchased the music store in 2020. “We have created an atmosphere that helps feed peoples love of nostalgia”, said Emily. “We’ve worked hard to create a unique experience for music fans and collectors”. The shop is the only one-of-its-kind in the region, offering music lovers a one-stop shop for vinyl, CDs, cassettes, band T-shirts and other music-related accessories. Jason and Emily have been active on social media hosting online auctions and keeping in touch with their customers. The team have fostered an online community that spans the region but has also crossed into Montreal and Ottawa. While working on developing their online community the partners took advantage of the Starter Company Plus program and the micro-grant to upgrade items in their shop to enhance the customer experience. “We’ve got all kinds of music genres. There’s pretty much something for everyone,” said Jason. “We are ready for our customers to come into the shop and browse the collection of new and old music”. Anyone looking to follow in these entrepreneurs’ footsteps should contact the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre. You could be the next successful entrepreneur to qualify for the Starter Company PLUS program! Already a business owner? CHOOSING THE RIGHT BIKE FOR YOU » BY BOB PETERS
The sun is shining, the sky is blue and the trail is calling. You’ve decided to explore Cornwall’s amazing (and award-winning) bike trails. All that is left is finding the right bike. Sounds simple, right? Before you go ahead and purchase that bike, here are a few things to consider. Road, Mountain or Hybrid? Fat or Electric? Most of us learned to ride on a bike that was likely a hand-me-down from a sibling. It may even have had a banana seat and the odd hockey card in the spokes. Today, there are distinct types of bikes to choose from – each specialized to give you an amazing riding experience. Road bikes are all about speed and
52
cornwall LIVING 2022
distance on flat paved surfaces. Drop handlebars allow the cyclist to bend over and create a more streamlined shape. Thin tires, light frames and pedals that work with special bike shoes all help to create efficiency. If
you are looking for long rides over county roads, road bikes are for you. Gravel bikes provide a road bike position with wider tires, perfect for exploring backroads. If you are more interested in offroad adventures, mountain bikes offer wider tires with more grip, a suspension system to smooth out the bumps and sturdier frames to handle whatever the trail can throw at you. Fat bikes take this notion a step further with massive tires and are just as comfortable on snow as they are on dirt. Hybrid bikes offer the best of both worlds. Their medium size tires can handle both dirt and paved trails, typically sport flat handlebars and are designed for recreational or
cornwall LIVING 2022
53
One of the great things about cycling is the places you discover along the way
commuter cyclists who still want a little bit of performance from their rides. Electric bikes have recently risen in popularity and help extend a cyclist’s enjoyment of the sport. They can still be pedaled like a regular bike, and the power assist comes in handy on hills and when riding against the wind. Choosing the Right Bike Size Bikes, like cyclists, come in all shapes and sizes. The right-sized bike will provide safe, optimal handling and reduce fatigue. Most bike frames have clearly marked frame sizes defined by the measurement of the tube that connects the pedals to the seat. Generally speaking, shorter people should consider small and medium frames, while those with longer legs will be more comfortable with larger frames. Most
54
cornwall LIVING 2022
bike seats can be adjusted so that you have a slight bend in your knee at full extension. Ensure that you can comfortably stand over the top tube, with your feet on the ground and at least an inch between your groin and the bar. Brakes, Helmets, Lights … oh my! One of the best parts of cycling is the opportunity to customize your ride. You can choose between traditional and disc brakes, attach a bell, storage bags, and especially a water bottle to stay hydrated. Be sure to add lights to help you see (and others see you). You can download apps such as Strava that let you track your rides and share with friends. A good properly fitted helmet is essential – and you can even get bicycle shorts with padding in all of the right places.
Get Rolling The best way to get started is visit one of Cornwall’s fine bike shops. The experts there will help you explore options, get you fitted properly on a bike, and help you choose any accessories. You can event rent a bike to take the sport for a spin. If you have bought a used bike, local bike mechanics can give you a tune up and make sure your ride is ready for the trails. TALK REAL ESTATE WITH A GOLDEN REALTOR® :
SOPHIE GOUDREAU
The housing market in Cornwall, SD&G and Eastern Ontario keeps rising. With homes selling quickly, and often time above asking price, having an experienced Realtor® to guide you is crucial. Both buyers and sellers need that seasoned experience now more than ever to guarantee that they are getting the best deal for their dollar. Coming to the table with more than 17 years of experience, Sophie Goudreau is a bilingual award-winning Realtor® with Century 21 who specializes in residential, rural, agricultural and commercial real estate as well as staging and unique marketing. Sophie was voted ‘’Rookie Of The Year’’ right from the get-go in ‘05, and has since won several other awards, including the Prestigious Centurion Award for 2020 and 2021, recognizing the Top 5% in Canada and was also recognized as the first Sherri McCullough Award winner designating the Top Producer by volume in the Century 21 office for Cornwall and SDG. “I take a lot of pride in accompanying my clients on their journey, there is nothing more gratifying than being able to help people during this important time, making the most important purchase of their lives. Most of my clients become friends! Regardless of the property value, I give everyone the “VIP” treatment,” said Goudreau. Sophie also helps people outside of her work as a Realtor®. For years, Goudreau has been an active supporter, and planned many fundraisers for Carefor Hospice Cornwall and other charities. Cornwall Living interviewed Goudreau and asked her about her thoughts on the current state of the housing market, and important things to consider when buying or selling a home. Q) The Cornwall housing market is hot, and I worry that if I buy a home, it will lose value. Is now the right time to buy? A) Without having a crystal ball, no one can predict exactly what can happen down the road. But I can tell you that we are at the mercy of the Bank of Canada and interest rate hikes, and many worldly circumstances have an effect on real estate, such as Covid restrictions, and so on. If you need to sell or buy, don’t wait for it. One of my favourite sayings is: Don’t wait to buy land, buy land and wait! speaking, 56 Historically cornwall LIVING 2022even when
the market slows down a bit, it eventually goes back up. So, if you buy and hold, invest for the long run, you normally won’t go wrong. I can’t tell you how many buyers who decided to wait in the past two years thinking the market would crash, and around here, the opposite has happened, we’ve seen increases we’ve never seen before, as high as 30% year over year. We are now starting to see a small correction in the larger markets across Canada. But the smaller ones are still in high demand since prices are still affordable! Multiple offers are still happening in Eastern Ontario. Now is a good time to buy, with a long-term strategy in mind, you shouldn’t go wrong. Keep in mind, if you sell low, you also normally buy lower. According to some experts, prices may be higher than in the past years and with record breaking sales and increases, but this is now the new normal and its unlikely prices will ever go down around here. We are seeing the housing market getting out of reach for many first-time buyers. While some are lucky enough to have their parents able to help out with down payments, if that’s not your situation, then you should start somewhere, and buy a condo or small house, at least get in the market and start gaining equity. Q) How has the rental market been affected since COVID-19, and is it a good time to invest as an investor? A) We are and have been in a seller’s market for the past two years and I worry there are less rentals, especially affordable rentals are also very low on inventory. Many investors have decided to sell their investment property taking full advantage of a hot market but in turn,
leaving many tenants struggling to find new rentals. The latest income properties sold at such higher prices; therefore, they are also being rented at much higher rates. Rents have also increased approximately 30 per cent on average in the area and with shortages or low supply come higher prices. But for new or avid investors, it is still a very good time to buy as the demand for rental is currently very high. Now is an even better time so one can beat the upcoming interest rates hikes. Speaking of rates, it is so important for anyone considering buying in the near future, even if you own a home and are convinced you’ll have no issues getting a mortgage, I still recommend getting fully preapproved and locked in at the lowest rate. You’d be surprised how many buyers come to me without this crucial tool in place. Plus keep in mind, sellers will choose offers from pre-qualified buyers over anyone who isn’t. Q) When buying a home, what are some overhead costs that I should be prepared for? budget two per cent A) We approximately of the purchase price ... give or take. It’s a good guideline to follow, it covers land transfer tax and lawyer fees normally. You then have to budget for moving costs of course. For example, a $500,000 property may cost you approximately $10,000 in closing costs, on top of your down payment and moving expenses. For the first time buyer, you should take into account that you’d get a land transfer tax credit, always best to check with your lawyer. Q) How is commercial real estate doing? A) Businesses are very excited about moving to Cornwall and Eastern Ontario in general and setting up shop around here. Cornwall is a hub locally and affordability is key. More and more with being located so close to Ottawa, Montreal and the U.S., makes it a truly viable option to be considered for any business. They find commercial spaces in Eastern Ontario in general are far more appealing than the larger cities and appreciate that their operating costs and bottom lines are much more profitable. If you want to get into the Cornwall and Eastern Ontario area market, but aren’t sure how, or if you have a property and want to get the best bang for your buck, go with Gold, call Sophie’s office at 613-363-4233.

THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER KANIATAROWANENNEH | THE GREAT RIVER » BY PAM MALONEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANY HILDEBRAND
What is your connection to the river? For many, the river represents a source of sustenance and survival from drinking water, food, work, transportation, electrical power, and more. For others, it is a playground for recreation, fishing, boating, and swimming. For most, it is a beautiful part of our lives, flowing through our communities, reflecting the seasons, and bringing a sense of peace.

cornwall LIVING 2022
Throughout history, the St. Lawrence River has remained consistent and strong, but it is also complex and fragile. A river holds more than water – it is an environment for thousands of living things that depend on one another. Humans have disrupted the natural balance and health of the ecosystem in many ways. Physical alterations such as locks, canals, and dams alter the natural flow of the river,
and other impacts such as climate, contaminants and invasive species affect its composition and balance. Memories of lost villages and stories of the powerful rapids remain in our hearts and remind us of our past. As we move forward, we look to the river to guide us in a direction of renewal. Our Indigenous neighbours teach us to respect the river for what it provides and to offer respect and care in return. We must consider this
responsibility together. Although our history has not been kind to the river ecosystem, scientists, communities, and citizens are working together to ensure a healthy future for the Great River. Local organizations such as the River Institute, the Raisin Region Conservation Authority, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and the Parks of the St. Lawrence work together with municipalities
and volunteer organizations to study and protect the changing environment. Volunteers from the Great River Network, Transition Cornwall+, and the Citizens for Marshland Conservation (formerly Cooper Marsh Conservators) and other non-profit organizations such as Watersheds Canada and Water Rangers are currently involved in ecosystem protection and restoration initiatives in the
local area. Collaborative projects such as the River Institute’s Great River Rapport provide gateways to translate science to communities in ways that connect us to the river and inspire us to become involved in its protection. The pandemic compelled many of us to slow down and reconnect with nature. Environmental awareness, outdoor education, climate conversation,

and eco-tourism are now a priority for communities and individuals who want to explore these connections further. The need for expression via the natural environment also inspires art, culture, health, and spirituality. The current times have created a perceptible shift in attitude, concern for the future, and an urgency to act. The City of Cornwall and the Counties of SD&G provide public access to the river via waterfront parks, campgrounds, marinas, and conservation areas. The Waterfront Trail provides many rest stops, lookouts, and places to sit and appreciate the beauty of the river. Next time you are by the river, take a moment to reflect and think about your relationship with our Great River – are you grateful for all that it provides? Do you treat it with the same kindness and care you give to other personal relationships and responsibilities? If you want to know what you can do to support a healthy environment, visit the City of Cornwall and/or the River Institute websites. www.RiverInstitute.ca www.Cornwall.ca

Brenda and Bob Burnie with Laurie Sullivan-Kennedy Bob and Brenda Burnie have a good life. Their days are filled with spending time with family and friends and staying active in the community. Bob is an avid reader, chauffeur to their active grandchildren and loves to play music while Brenda has immersed herself in the world of genealogy as she tracks their family trees. The Cornwall couple has been retired for 8 years, and while working, they were able to put away enough money to allow them the freedom of choosing how to spend their days. It’s a good life, and health permitting they plan to enjoy their treasured family time for as long as they can. Bob and Brenda know, however, that life often throws curveballs when you least expect it. When Bob’s mother (at the spry age of 83) sat down to pre-arrange her own funeral, the couple quickly realized this was something they should take care of in advance as well. “It was not easy thinking about what should happen if one of us

passed away, but who better to deal with these questions than us?” notes Bob. “The last thing we would want is to burden our children with these details. We have a son with special needs and it was imperative to us to take care of this for his sake.” Bob and Brenda sat down with Laurie Sullivan-Kennedy, a Family Service Counsellor with Lahaie & Sullivan Cornwall Funeral Homes. Laurie was able to explain the wide variety of options available to the couple, from funeral, burial and celebration of life ceremonies. “Our approach is to provide our clients the information so that they can make a stress-free decision that is right for their family,” says Laurie Sullivan-Kennedy. “There is no timeline or right answer, each pathway is unique.” With a better understanding of the process, the Burnies were able to arrange all of the details of their funerals, so that they could get on with the business of enjoying their life.

“We liked that we were in control of all the decisions, and Lahaie & Sullivan were able to offer suggestions we had not even considered,” said Mr. Burnie. “Music has always been a big part of our lives so selecting those pieces was a must for us.” The advantage of pre-planning your funeral extends beyond choosing farewell options that reflect your personality and passions. “Not only did we arrange things exactly to our liking, but there is a significant financial benefit with the prepayment plan,” notes Brenda. “Paying in today’s dollars for something that may happen in 10, 20 or 30 years will be a large relief to our children.” The Burnies recommend taking action today so that your future self will thank you. “If we could share one thing with people sitting on the fence about this, is just do it!” The Burnies chuckle in unison. “It has freed up space and energy in our lives to live every day to the fullest.”

A VERY NICE PLACE TO STAY You have different choices when renting a room in Cornwall
» BY KEVIN LAJOIE
When it comes to staying in Cornwall and area, the options are about as diverse and unique as the region itself. From the modern comfort of brand name hotels to the vintage charm of historic inns and B&Bs to the rustic appeal of cottages, campsites and farm stays, the accommodations scene in Cornwall and SDG Counties has something for pretty much every taste. And with the introduction of the Staycation Tax Credit for Ontario residents this year, there’s no better time to plan an overnight visit to the area. The city is home to a wide array of brand name hotels and motels that have enhanced their cleaning protocols and adopted new safety measures in the wake of the pandemic. These properties host thousands of guests each year who take advantage of the convenient location, modern suites and extra amenities that the properties offer. From welcoming anglers with boats in tow to accommodating cycle tourists with their bikes, the establishments go that extra mile wherever possible to enhance the visitor experience. “We’ve seen a growing number of outdoor adventure seekers over the
last couple of years and we love to host them,” said Scott Lecky, owner of the Ramada by Wyndham on Brookdale Avenue. “We’ve also made a significant investment in upgrading our rooms, suites and amenities like our indoor pool to make our establishment even more appealing to visitors.” The proximity to local attractions, cycling trails, restaurants and shops is another big perk for those looking to stay in the city. “Our visitors really enjoy being close to all that Cornwall has to offer,” said Priti Ahlawat, assistant manger of the Comfort Inn Cornwall on Vincent Massey Drive. “We’re no
more than a few minutes’ drive from pretty much everything.” Those seeking a more historic stay can get their fix at establishments like the beautiful Russell Manor Bed & Breakfast in Morrisburg or the popular Chesley’s Inn in Downtown Cornwall, which has the distinction of being Ontario’s oldest inn. “Guests love being able to walk over (to Pitt Street) for dinner or a drink or to jump on their bikes and hit the trail. It’s all less than a block away,” said Robert Prowse, the innkeeper at Chesley’s Inn. For outdoor enthusiasts, the options are endless, from experiencing a yurt stay at Groovy Yurts in Alexandria or Springfield Farm in Apple Hill to sleeping under the stars at one of the many campsites that dot the region. This includes the Parks of the St. Lawrence, operators of the renowned Long Sault Parkway and 10 campgrounds along the St. Lawrence, featuring pristine waterfront camping and cottage options to enjoy. Visitors can elect to sleep under the trees or, in the case of the Robin’s Roost Treehouse, sleep among them. Adding to these traditional accommodations are a growing

number of stay options at homes, cottages and other unique spaces through online platforms like Airbnb and VRBO. Ferme Butte & Bine is one of them, offering farm stays at their beautiful 1812 farmhouse near the Peanut Line Trail in Williamstown through Airbnb. The Dutrisac family launched the new venture in October 2020 and the response has been extremely positive. “We love seeing the guests come and completely disconnect. Our Wi-Fi and cell reception isn’t ideal and no one’s every complained,” said Sylviane Dutrisac. “About half of the people want to come and just relax, stay in the countryside to stop and

take a breather. The other half want to explore the unique places and restaurants we have in the area.” Dozens of Airbnb properties are now listed for the Cornwall region, spanning everything from waterfront cottages to loft apartments to fullyequipped Downtown bungalows – like the one managed by Ashley Willis of AshNa Airbnb Property Management. Through the handful of Airbnb properties she manages, Willis has hosted guests from nearly every province as well as Spain, France, Australia, the United States and beyond. “Airbnb’s offer short and long-term options that can accommodate a
single person or an entire family or work group,” she said. “Our guests love the community feel and outdoor vibe of Cornwall. We partner with local businesses to help our guests explore the city during their stay.” As the accommodation options continue to grow in Cornwall and SDG Counties, so too does the potential to welcome even more visitors. “We have such an amazing region for people to discover,” Willis added. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Farming for growth in Cornwall & SDG
» BY KAT RENDEK
Cornwall has become a major hub for sustainable and ecological farming in Ontario, with investments and business connections spanning across the globe. Don’t believe me? Sounds like someone needs to unlearn what it means to farm. Unlike the traditional and highly seasonal production models which depend on large plots of land, ideal weather conditions, and many helping hands, Cornwall’s new era of farming is rooted indoors. Indoor farming has many forms but generally involves growing produce in highly controlled indoor environments using soil, hydroponic (water trays or towers), or aquaponic (water tanks with fish) technology. By growing indoors, farmers can maximize production times and meet local demands for fresh produce during the winter months. Fieldless Farms, a wholesale hydroponic grower in Cornwall founded in 2018, produces readyto-eat lettuce for over 40 Farm Boy grocery stores across Ontario. “Farm Boy saw the opportunity to partner with us immediately,” said Jon Lomow, Fieldless Farm CEO and founding partner. “We started with three stores in Ottawa and within
70
cornwall LIVING 2022
weeks we were supplying every store in Eastern Ontario. When they contacted us a month later to supply their stores in Toronto, we knew we were doing something special.” The preference for ready-to-eat and locally grown produce isn’t new, but consumer satisfaction and demand during the pandemic has changed the landscape for indoor farming in Canada. “I never thought we would build a fan base for lettuce,” joked Lomow. “I figured we might build a reputation for what we are doing in terms of sustainable agriculture, but the biggest feedback we get is how much people love the lettuce. That was eye-opening and it helped us Eric Bergeron Cultivtd
plan for future growth.” The benefits of indoor farming have inspired both existing and new entrepreneurs in the region, including Cornerstone Organics and Green Lock. “For ten years we have been growing produce to supply local farmers’ markets and a weekly box program,” said Jaime MacRae, coowner of Cornerstone Organics. “We’ve been successful but have always wanted to expand our operations and grow year-round.” After considering the options, Jaime and her partner Matt Lalonde chose aquaponic technology because it offers a high yield without compromising their growing standards. “The wastewater from the tilapia is perfect food for the plants which, in turn, help to filter the water for the fish,” explained Lalonde. “In this system, we don’t need to use synthetic fertilizer and we can even offer fresh tilapia to customers a few times per year.” Taking their production indoors will allow Cornerstone Organics to sell wholesale to regional restaurants, schools, daycares, and long-term care facilities all year round.

“We know our consumers are looking for reliable fresh produce so when we found someone selling the equipment we needed, we decided it was time to make the jump,” explained MacRae. There are many indoor farming systems on the market these days however, one Cornwall-developed product stands up from the others. “ZipGrow Inc is a full-service provider of vertical hydroponic and aquaponic systems,” explains Eric Lang, President of ZipGrow Inc. “Our soilless ZipGrow™ Tower systems are efficient and scalable which makes it possible for anyone to successfully grow indoors.” Founded in 2016, ZipGrow Inc now sells their systems

to farms all over the world. Despite their success, the company continues to prioritize the development of new products in their 5,000 sq. ft. indoor vertical farm and through partnerships with key research institutions. Ongoing product development is also evident from local software company Canobi AgTech, based in Maxville. Although originally created for the medicinal cannabis industry, developers recently enhanced their “smart” indoor environment management services to support the unique needs of indoor food farming. Their focused efforts have caught the attention of investor and local indoor farming brokers. Industry brokers in Cornwall? Why, yes! Last year, Eric Bergeron and Eric Levesque established Cultivatd, an indoor farming brokerage firm to help new and expanding producers select the best technology for their needs, cover initial costs through capital funding, and contract skilled indoor farmers if needed. “It’s an old business model for a new industry,” explained Eric Bergeron, managing partner of Cultivatd. “Our firm ensures indoor farmers understand exactly what they are buying and guarantees they get the support they need to be successful.” Although new to the industry, Cultivatd already works with 40 companies around the world and is establishing offices in the US, UAE, and Australia over the next few years. “As we continue to build our global network, I know our head office will always be in Cornwall,” said Bergeron. “As broker, we won’t need to have a big team. Instead, we need quality services to ensure indoor farmers around the world use the best possible technology so they can succeed and continue to grow fresh food for their community.”

A PLACE TO LIVE There are options in finding a place a place to live in Cornwall
» BY FRANCIS RACINE
There’s quite a lot of growth taking place in the City of Cornwall. It’s no surprise then that the 2021 census showed a population increase of 2.7% — from 46,589 to 47,845. That’s more than five times the growth rate of the city from 2011 to 2016. The increase, mixed with the COVID-19 pandemic, has resulted in a housing pinch throughout the country. Although Cornwall isn’t immune to the issue, the city has fared considerably well. That’s due to several initiatives — both private and public — that have been taken in order to ease housing pressures. Several apartment buildings and condominiums are currently being constructed throughout the city. In all, nearly 300 units are set to be built within the next year. Take the new Prime Square for example. The five-storey building, being constructed by Tri-Star
Construction at the corner of Pitt and Second, will be home to not only an amazing view of downtown Cornwall, but also 44 apartments. There’s also quite a lot of construction being undertaken in the city’s historic Cotton Mill District. Once home to bustling industrial operations in the late 19th century, the area is now the target of significant investment that has seen the mill

buildings transformed into condos and commercial spaces. The Cotton Mills’ Bell Tower, a completely new build currently under construction, will feature a staggering 56 condo units. These will be at a stones throw of the scenic St. Lawrence River and will therefore offer an observation deck on the top floor. Once the Bell Tower is completed, R.M.P. Construction, the firm in charge of the construction, will begin work on the Stephens Building, which will create an additional 76 units. Yet it gets even better! A new build at the southwest corner of McConnell Avenue and Ninth Street East, currently under construction and slated to open in early 2023, will be home to 77 residential units. These will be a mix of Rent Geared to Income, attainable and market units. A second build, which will feature stacked townhouses, will create an

additional 16 housing units, and will be constructed on immediately south of the Highway 401 overpass, in the city’s North End. These will vary in sizes, which will allow them to be available not only for single individuals but also families. “The (City’s) Human Services Department is committed to creating housing developments that provide sustainable solutions that would include varied/mixed income groups, including those seeking attainable market rental units,” said Mellissa Morgan, Administrator of the Cornwall SD&G Human Services Department. “Our two current developments are examples of those solutions.” According to the City of Cornwall and United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Housing Revitalization Plan, “human capital is an important determinant of economic performance. An economy’s stock of knowledge, talent and creativity determines its ability to increase productivity, innovate and sustain growth.” Several studies have drawn a connection between availability of housing to the wellbeing and prosperity of communities. The type, price, and quality of housing can have a significant impact on the attractiveness of cities to different types of workers. It’s not just apartments and condos that are being built in Cornwall — so too are houses. Local construction companies have been kept busy lately, expanding subdivisions. These include the Belfort Estate and Northwood Forest developments, among others. With all that growth, the average value of a house in Cornwall has risen considerably. Despite that increase however, prices in the city still sit well below their Ottawa and Toronto counterparts, making Cornwall an ideal place to settle.

BRICK AND MORTAR INVESTING Local investment of over $750,000 breathes new life into long standing downtown buildings
» BY AMY MALYON
It’s exciting to learn why people and businesses are choosing to invest in Cornwall – especially when the heart of the city is their destination of success. Recent investments in revitalizing two downtown buildings are the perfect example of an exciting new venture of risk, investment, partnership and growth. Nancy Vigeant and Troy and Neviana Maleyko purchased the two story building at 116 Pitt Street. Formally home to a long-standing retail store, Nancy has opened Carrots N’ Dates – a restaurant and bake shop offering a variety of healthy food choices. Ms. Vigeant had the dream of owning her own café and met the Maleyko’s in Windsor about 3 years

It was clear to Nancy that Carrots N’ Dates would be her future but it wasn’t until she saw a building for sale in Cornwall that she realized just how much. “I have always loved the peacefulness and scenery of Cornwall, and when the opportunity arose to purchase the property on Pitt Street, I knew this was my chance to have my own café,” says Nancy. “I was torn with the thought of leaving Carrots N’ Dates, but when I shared my idea with Troy and Neviana they wanted to be a part of it and offered me a partnership in Carrots N’ Dates! Thus, Carrots N’ Dates Cornwall was born.” The trio purchased the building, which included a residential space on the second floor and immediately

proceeded with a complete retro fit of the space. Transforming the building into a 1,650 sq. ft. restaurant complete with commercial kitchen, dining area for 24 guests, and a 400 square foot covered patio, required vision, patience and money. The Cornwall Heart of the City Community Improvement Plan (CIP) helped ease a bit of the financial risk and burden of their new venture. The CIP is designed to assist commercial property owners make improvements to building façades and repair structure and functionality of existing buildings. CIP funding leverages additional investment by the property owner that results in a functional building that adds to the Cornwall economy over the long term. There was close to $2 million in CIP funding approved in 2021 alone. “With assistance from the CIP and BDC we were able to create the space we needed to fulfil the company’s philosophy,” says Nancy. “The renovations went well, and we now are
84
cornwall LIVING 2022
able to prep all of our food in house; soups, stews, salads, dressings, dips, raw desserts, bread, kombucha – all served in a loving environment.” The CIP played a role in the complete renovation to another well established commercial building – just up the block and around the corner at 113 Second Street East. The two storey office building was purchased from the Chamber of Commerce by local businessmen Tim Ming and Ian MacDonell. The pair made the decision to purchase the building after leasing commercial space for their respective financial establishments for many years. “I had been looking for a building Downtown for many years and even almost bought several years ago,” says Mr. Ming. “This opportunity offered everything we were looking for - a great location, a solid building and lots of parking. We saw it as an investment for the future.” The building has been given a new lease on life, with a complete redesign
under the watchful eye of local general contractor Grant Marion. Upgrades include façade improvements, a relocation of the main entrance, installation of an elevator, energy efficient LED lights, and a new natural gas forced air heating and cooling system. “The renovations have created a bright, welcoming, professional space and there is still more to come,” notes Mr. MacDonell. “As part of the renovation, we have extra space to welcome new tenants.” While Ming and MacDonell spread the wealth, Carrots N’ Dates spread the health and together they are spreading the love for Downtown Cornwall. The combined investment of over $750,000 was supported with CIP funding of $79,500 and there is now essentially two brand new buildings in the Downtown core. www.ChooseCornwall.ca.

Cornwall Community Hospital looks to the future of exceptional care Good things are happening at Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH). As our healthcare system begins recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, CCH has developed a new Strategic Plan to address the current and future needs of our community. Beginning this year, CCH will chart a course Leading Innovative Transformation in our community, with a focus on three strategic directions: Recovery, People and Integration. The hospital’s new Strategic Plan will create measurable positive impacts on our population by: • Restoring and enhancing access to care services; • Supporting the wellbeing of patients, their caregivers and healthcare workers; • Responding equitability to the needs of our diverse patients and staff; and, • Working with partners to transform locally integrated healthcare, including members of the Upper Canada, Cornwall and Area Ontario Health Team. “We spent a number of months engaging with our CCH teams,
86
cornwall LIVING 2022
partners and stakeholders to set strategic directions that will chart a course for our future and enhance the care and services we provide to the community,” says Jeanette Despatie, CCH President and Chief Executive Officer. “The result of this collective effort is a Strategic Plan that positions CCH for a strong post-pandemic recovery, focuses on people, and promotes health system integration.” In recent years, CCH has solidified itself as a regional leader in healthcare delivery. The hospital has made strides in areas of health informatics and technologies; surgical programs; community programs; family and caregiver engagement; and nationally recognized health quality initiatives. Last year, while in the midst of managing the COVID-19 pandemic, CCH became one of few hospitals in Canada to offer a procedure called Breast Seed Localization; a more comfortable and efficient alternative to wire localization to pinpoint and remove nonpalpable tumours. CCH also introduced new digital tools last year that put patients and caregivers at the center of their care
teams. These include MyChart, a personal online portal for your health records, and SeamlessMD for remote pre- and post-surgical monitoring. “We are proud of the advancements made to improve the patient experience, and are confident that our new Strategic Plan will deliver on our commitment of providing Exceptional Care. Always.” adds Despatie. CCH’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, Leading Innovative Transformation, can be found at www.cornwallhospital.ca.

SUPPORTING EASTERN ONTARIO St. Lawrence College (SLC) has long been at the forefront of developing skilled workers to meet the needs of employers and industry in the Cornwall region. Whether in health care, trades and construction, supply chain, or other industries, through various partnerships and support from government funding, SLC works with area sectors and employers to ensure the continued growth of a talented regional workforce. Health Care With funding from the Ontario government, the College has provided critical Environmental Service Aide training at the Tsiionkwanonhso:te Long Term Care home on Cornwall Island. Training included basic housekeeping, equipment maintenance, and infection control. After the fourweek program, staff members received a certificate of completion from the Canadian Healthcare Housekeepers Association and an Acknowledgement of Participation. Staff members also completed CPR and WHMIS training which are key to their roles and work environment. “The training provided by St. Lawrence College elevated the ability of our staff to help keep our

facility and residents safe during the pandemic, but also increased their skills and knowledge,” says Vincent Barry Lazore, the home’s administrator. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with the College as our staff appreciate the access to this critical training in healthcare.” SLC plans to deliver an Office Assistant Healthcare program and Environmental Service Aide training to other area employers, as well as upskilling for nurses in critical care nursing and perioperative care. Construction Through government funding and in partnership with the Eastern Ontario College Consortium
(EOCC), SLC has trained employees with Bourgon Construction in Cornwall. The training included upskilling employees in Construction Management, Plan Reading, Cost Estimating, Construction Drawings and Methods, and Project Management. “We’re happy to partner with SLC to utilize the funding available through the EOCC construction program,” says Greg Bridge GSI, Operations and Safety Manager. “The funding has allowed us to provide additional training for our staff, which may not have been possible without financial support. As a result, we benefit from increased knowledge and skills in our workforce." Other training the College will do in Cornwall includes a five-day construction safety training program covering Working at Heights, Elevated Platform Lift, Traffic Control, Confined Space Awareness, and WHMIS. The College is excited to offer a Timber Frame course on the Cornwall campus as well, which runs over six-days and uses a blend of hand tools and power tools, where participants work on prepping each piece for its specific role and place in the frame being built.

WORKING COLLABORATIVELY A waterfront workspace for modern day business
» BY LESLEY McDOUGALL
WB Hub is bringing the wow into the workplace with their new coworking space where old-world charm meets modern innovation. Purpose built to serve established enterprises, growing startups and freelancers, the 7,400 sq ft. space with high ceilings and unobstructed views of the mighty St. Lawrence River has flexible options to suit all modern-day office workers. “We saw the need in Cornwall to create an inviting, collaborative, professional workspace for both startup companies and existing companies with people working remotely,” said Tom Hughes, VicePresident of the Weaving Baskets Group“ and what better space to do that in other than the historic Cotton Mill District." The Smart dynamic area consists of 20 closed offices, from single use up to a large business suite for
92
cornwall LIVING 2022
10 people. Tenants can pay a small premium for a river view office should they wish to upgrade. Opened in February, 85% of the offices are already rented. Keyless entry by phone and automation of booking space and services online streamlines the entire process. “I believe coworking spaces are the future for startups and entrepreneurs” added Mr. Hughes. With the rise of work from home becoming permanent for many in
the workforce, WB Hub also allows individuals to have a low-cost alternative hybrid solution where they can interact with others in an open shared area with fully wired dedicated desks. By incorporating modular and mobile furniture into the design, the space can also be transformed for events and business gatherings of up to 50 people. The model of a co-working space isn’t new, but it is accelerating in popularity as people see the value now more than ever in connecting in person and networking. It allows businesses the ease of scaling up or down their space based on activity. Eric Bergeron co-founder and managing partner of Cultivatd, a Cornwall indoor farming brokerage is discovering this firsthand and has leased over 1,500 sq. ft. of office space to adapt to his company's growth.

“We're a start-up, we really like the energy that comes from other startups,” said Mr. Bergeron. He sees this as a space that will generate a culture of collaboration and innovation whilst also having a space to work privately within their team when needed. “Entrepreneurs feed off other entrepreneurs. It’s coworking but it’s also professional and private”. Mr. Bergeron and his team enjoy the benefit of boardroom access and as a global company, the prestigious business location and environment provides the professional services in a space that aligns with the company's modern vision. With flexible options from a 1 hour booking through to a one-year lease, plans can be tailored to fit everyone's business needs. Staying a while? Hang your pictures and settle in. All packages include Wi-Fi, free tea and coffee, along with access to a functional kitchen. The building is completely wheelchair accessible, and free parking is available in the north parking lot. Soundproof phone booths are available for those using the open space and customized extras include access to boardrooms with smart boards, printing services, and a prestigious business address and mail service. When transforming and designing the old mill, they left no stone unturned when it comes to modern-day business. WB Hub is located at 705 Cotton Mill Street (Unit 116) and overlooks the St. Lawrence River. www.wbhub.ca
