HOME SOON?: Mike Scott’s new heart is doing great, so far Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Mike Scott’s new heart is doing just fine, thank you very much. The Cornwall man who underwent a heart transplant little more than a week ago is making steady progress in an Ottawa hospital, his wife
said Wednesday. “Mike is fantastic,” said Tia Scott. “The pacemaker was removed and he is now running completely on his new heart. Mike is up walking with a walker a few times a day and feeling a lot better overall.” Doctors plan to release Scott from intensive
care tomorrow and move him to other accommodations within the hospital. Tia said his return to Cornwall will depend on his recovery. “We are hoping he will be released in the next few weeks as long as his improvement progresses,” she said.
Scott suffered a massive heart attack weeks ago and was in a coma for days. Doctors had prepared Tia for the worst but Scott rebounded quickly. He waited only a few weeks for a donor heart, while being prepared for up to two years on the transplant list.

1. Public Safety 2. Reliability of Electric Service Many service outages and interruptions are caused by tree limbs which when affected by wind or ice fall into power lines causing damage to wires, short circuits and other problems. This creates potential danger for the homeowner and their property, danger that can be avoided by not planting tall-growing trees under or near electric wires, and by routine tree trimming. Cornwall Electric utilizes tree trimmers trained in proper tree trimming techniques around energized lines. The trees are cleared the distance required to create a sufficient air barrier around the wires to reduce branch contacts due to icing and wind. Generally the branches are trimmed back to the parent limb on the tree. This practice allows the pruning cuts to “heal” more rapidly, reducing the chances of insect and disease damage, and promotes a healthier growth of branches that are directed away from the power lines. 6153499

CORNWALL, Ontario – Champs Eastside Boxing Club will remain in its current home. City council agreed Monday night to approve a 10-year lease, with an option after five years, with the club that has spawned the solid ring work of Tony Luis, the reigning WBC Continental Americas Lightweight Champion. The boxing club is located on Jarvis Street in Cornwall’s east end in a former library building and has the option in five years of reupping for another five years at the same terms. The city’s move also includes the satellite office of the Boys and Girls Club on Henry Street. The new agreement will see the boxing club and Boys and Girls Club pay for utilities and water as well as an annual rental of $150 as is currently in place. The agreement is effective Jan. 1, 2016. Coun. Elaine MacDonald supported the move spearheaded by Coun. David Murphy, but was concerned about the 10-year term. “I’m a little bit leery about the 10 years. It obligates the recipients
to continue for 10 years potentially,” she said. But Coun. Andre Rivette said the buildings and the tenants appear to be going nowhere. “We have parties in these areas who want to participate and help the city,” he said. Recreation supervisor Christine Lefebvre said escape clauses would be built into the lease agreements to benefit both parties. For 14 years, Luis’ father/trainer Jorge Luis has operated their non-profit club in a modest-sized building at 223 Jarvis Street East on city property beside St. Joseph Pool. Team Luis was at the council chambers. “Nothing changes,” said Jorge Luis after the council vote. “And that’s good. I don’t want to be a burden.” Tony Luis was named 2014 Team Cornwall Ambassador of the Year and is also a co-chair of its youth organization Teen Cornwall. The club has roughly 25 active members and is looking to recruit ages 12-20 for four training sessions a week. Champs’ monthly membership fee is only $30 and the club operates as a non-profit.

GIVING BACK TO CHEO: Cornwall teen designs winning telethon logo Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall teenager who suffered the effects of a rare cyst that grew inside her brain for years was part of a classroom art project to design the logo for the upcoming CHEO telethon. Sara White didn’t really give it a second thought, as she had surgery and side effects to grapple with as doctors worked to remove the cyst from her pituitary gland. When she was told not long ago that her logo
Nadia
had in fact won the competition the news was thrilling. “I think it will be a really awesome to do something like this for CHEO,” she said. “Because I had such a personal experience there.” The 15-year-old Grade 10 student began complaining of migraines a few years ago that medication alone could not stop. Things progressed so much that her version became impaired and doctors finally diagnosed what is known as a Rathke’s cleft cyst - a benign growth on the pituitary gland. “It’s really uncommon in people under 30,” said White. “I spent a lot of time at CHEO.” Surgery in January saw the cyst removed, but there are some side effects. Her short-term memory has been damaged, though doctors are hopeful things will improve over time. Likewise she has
had difficulty focusing her thoughts on specific areas, like school work. But White is a very thoughtful teenager and believes she will come through the immediate issues she has to face. “I feel pretty good,” she said. “The doctors said there is a pretty high chance that there won’t be any regrowth.” And the fact that CHEO Telethon officials thought enough of her logo design to make it the official brand of this year’s event speaks volumes of her artistic talent. Her art teacher at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, Renee Lalande, tasked her class with designing logos for the contest. “I was really shocked,” White said, adding she was in the hospital in Cornwall when she was told she’d won. “I kind of forgot about it, to be honest.”

food bank and soup kitchen. “We chose the Agape Centre to be the recipient of our food drive because of the work that they do to make sure that no one goes hungry in our community,” said owner Diane Besner. Ellen Boulerice carried in nearly 20 pounds of food items every time she worked out. The organization also purchased bags of potatoes and carrots with the proceeds from water sales for the month of March. “It’s so wonderful to receive fresh food like this,” said Alyssa Blais, executive director at the Agape Centre. “People love getting real fruits and veggies with their food bank groceries.” The large donation has already been added to the food bank’s shelves, and will help feed the 1,000 people who access the Agape’s free services monthly. “A big thanks to all that participated in the drive. You made a difference in reaching and surpassing our goal,” said Besner. “We did it!”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Superheroes, pop culture experts and (let’s face it) geeks of all kind have next Saturday circled on their calendar. That’s the day the Cornwall and Area Pop Event takes place at the Benson Centre. Cornwall’s own version of Comicon has grown by leaps and bounds and the inaugural event hasn’t even taken place yet. “We had chosen a couple of smaller venues,” said Randy Sauve, who along with Carol Grant are organizing the event. “But we had to move to the Benson Centre. “Once the 501st Legion and Doctor Who Society got involved it really took off.” For uninitiated (you know who you are) the Capital City Garrison, 501st Legion is a Star Wars tribute club that covers much of eastern Ontario. CAPE will have many of the features of the larger shows held in cities such as Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto and the masses are expected to be measured in the thousands. Some of the major guest announcements include AMC’s Comic Book Men Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic, Degrassi’s Pat Mastroianni (Joey Jeremiah), Voice Actor John Stocker and The Walking Dead’s Amber Dawn Fox (Officer Bello from Season 5), including
others. The show will also feature many other attractions and guests such as the Doctor Who Society of Canada (with Ottawa Tardis, daleks and more), Capital City Garrison 501st Legion (film-authentic Star Wars characters), the League of Superheroes (cosplayers in superhero costumes), Montreal Ghostbusters, Toronto Batman, most of the cast of the Pete Winning and the Pirates webseries and Heroes of the North webseries. A commemorative limited edition #1 issue of the Ninth Doctor Who comic is also for sale only at the show. The show will also feature artists, authors, musicians (not performing), athletes, celebrity guests, exhibitors, panels, cosplay (people in costume), special displays and more. “The local arts community right here in Cornwall has tremendous talent,” said Grant. “We don’t even have to leave Cornwall and could easily feature an entire ice pad of talent alone with the people right here in our city.” Organizers expect CAPE to be a yearly event. Admission is $15 in advance ($18 at the door) and children 12 & under will be admitted free. The show runs April 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be an official Opening Ceremony with ribbon cutting at 9:45 a.m.

MAN AMONG MEN: First Cornwall Big Brother ever passes away tionship continued to blossom. Tyo was best man at Graham’s wedding and the two attended every Big Brother banquet that was held – including the last event when the elder part of the duo was in a wheelchair. “He told him he was going to bring him to the banquet, even if he had to carry him in,” said Big Brothers and Big Sisters Cornwall office executive director Amanda Brisson in an interview. “I just stopped crying so I could answer the phone.” Despite the march of time, the two stayed committed to each other. As the years went on it became clear that Graham was assuming the role of Big Brother to Tyo.
“I think I took him on his first goose hunt,” said Graham, who added the outdoors was a staple part of their relationship. “We would spent hours on woodworking in his shop. “And a weekend camping trip would turn into all summer.” Tyo’s family is mourning a man who dedicated himself to helping young people. “The kids just gravitated towards him,” said Yvonne Last, one of Tyo’s three children. “Dad just wanted to help other young kids. He was no nonsense. He was kind to them and helped them out.” Brisson said the agency is planning a tribute to Tyo in the future.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Chances are if you passed Wilfred Tyo on the street you wouldn’t know the impact he has had on countless lives in Cornwall. But after peeling back the layers it’s clear the first man to ever be a Big Brother in Cornwall touched the hearts of many. Tyo’s life was remembered Wednesday by dozens of people whom he had come to know through years of volunteering his time as a mentor to young people. He passed away Wednesday morning following a short stay in hospital at the
age of 89. Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of Tyo’s time as a Big Brother is Ron Graham. The two were the first match created by the fledgling Cornwall chapter back in 1973. “He was such a posiWILFRED TYO tive role model,” said Graham. “It was nice to have someone to talk to all the time.” The pair spent the next 40-plus years together, sewn at the hip some might say. While their match officially ended when Graham turned 18, their rela-

CORNWALL, Ontario - What does a typical Cornwall-area winter get you? Great conditions for the annual Raisin River Canoe Race. The annual rite of spring takes place April 19 on the Raisin River, and race organizers are pleased to report things are looking downright awesome for the 30-km trek through South Glengarry. “Conditions are ideal,” said Lissa Deslandes, race organizer. “Water is flowing well and most of the ice is gone.” Race officials have had to deal with fickle winter/spring weather in the past, including last year when the event was postponed for two weeks because of the winter that wouldn’t quit. New this year for the race will be signs
hanging on bridges along the route, advising canoeists of how far they have travelled, and how many more kilometres they have to go before the finish line. Last year 160 canoes were in the water, with 303 people paddling their way to the finish line. Deslandes said she’s hoping for more this year, but weather will play a factor. “We have some fair-weather canoeists,” she said. “Hopefully Mother Nature will be on board for us.” Long-range forecast as of April 9 suggested sunny skies at 12 degrees for race day. There will be a pre-race breakfast, as usual, at St. Andrews Hall and post-race awards and banquet at the Char-Lan recreation centre. More details on all the race events, including info on registration, can be found at www.rrca. on.ca.

Dancing around the Port of Cornwall and chemical tanks Todd Lihou
confidentiality agreements have been signed to that end. But I am hearing that some of the progress made after talks began last year has been slowed to a veritable crawl. In fact, at the last meeting of all parties, the delegation from Akwesasne never showed, I’m told. O’Shaughnessy clarified that Monday night, when he said an official was ill and couldn’t make it. But people were still scrambling the day of the meeting, searching for the missing parties. I put it to O’Shaughnessy in plane terms – are we in danger of losing this attempt to gain control of that land because things are getting bogged down? “If it gets to that point certainly the public will know at that time,” he said. “Is it progressing? Yes it is. You have to remember this isn’t an easy process. We are unique in the port divestiture world.” Sure we are (aren’t we always?)…but the silence coming out of this particular file at city hall is starting to make some people nervous. At EVERY city council meeting there is an agenda item titled: “Port of Cornwall Divestiture” where council is supposed to receive an update on the issue. I cannot recall the last public update on this issue. And with the rumblings I am hearing from municipal officials, red flags are
todd.lihou@tc.tc
The mayor and I enjoyed a dance Monday night. He’s pretty good at the Waltz, but not so much when it comes to the Cha-Cha. Leslie O’Shaughnessy and I discussed the ins and outs of the chemical tanks on Cornwall’s waterfront and the fact that some people at city hall (including city council) are grumbling about the fact that negotiations concerning the land have ground to a halt. Now there is genuine concern from some those tanks, not to mention the future of that property, are going nowhere. It was more than a year ago that we broke the story of calcium chloride tanks that would be built adjacent to the Cornwall harbour. The resulting furor led to protests, anger and eventually a desire to see the city, and our friends in Akwesasne, assume ownership of the land. It’s called “port divestiture” and it’s something we should have explored fully years ago when the late Phil Poirier was mayor of Cornwall. In a nutshell, Cornwall, Akwesasne and Transport Canada are negotiating the future ownership of the land, and transferring it so that the city and the Mohawk territory would assume stewardship of that property. The talks are terribly secret and
going up. As we danced around this subject O’Shaughnessy pointed to the fact that reports, including some of the condition of the land at the port, are still being completed. When we find out how contaminated the property is, divestiture talks will likely contain more substance, the mayor assured. Akwesasne, O’Shaughnessy noted, is in a run-up to a June election. “We do know (the Ontario municipal election) slowed down the process in the City of Cornwall,” he added. Fair enough…but why all the secrecy right now? Can’t we give something to John Q. Public who was more than a little miffed back in December, 2013 when word broke that tanks would once again dominate the Cornwall waterfront? The mayor campaigned on bringing more
transparency to city hall, including this particular subject. “When I talk transparency and accountability, at the end of the day nothing will be done in regards to any type of divestiture until it is approved in public in a council meeting with the public dully aware of what a divestiture will look like,” said O’Shaughnessy. “I have to be cautious. These are confidential (negotiations). “If at any point in time we can share information, I can assure you it will be done.” I think it’s time to get something, anything, out on this subject to quell some of the concerns that are bubbling to the surface. I get the impression there is a chance, just a chance, this thing could fall apart before all is said and done. I hope that doesn’t happen.

Dear editor,
Upon expressing my concerns to the editor, I was told that while he sympathized for our situation, there would be no apology forthcoming, because the article is factual. Indeed and unfortunately, it is. However, is a glorified advertisement piece more important than the family and friends who still suffer the loss of a young mother, daughter, sister, friend, and colleague? Is an apology for the insensitive
trivialization of our pain really unwarranted? Perhaps if Adam Brazeau had contacted us, as he did other area residents, the article could have been more balanced. At the very least, it would not have been such a gut wrenching shock. Imagine, Adam, reading about the worst day of your life in a feel good fluff piece. Kathy Dutrisac MacNeill

To all the people that understood that a gate fee is required to bring big name entertainment to Cornwall, I say thanks for continued loyalty and for coming year after year. HERE AND THERE A recent hearing for a police officer accused of “time theft” that resulted in a two-year reduction in rank was by all accounts a public hearing, despite the “private internal matter” attached to the action. However, the time and place of the hearing was never made public by the service. Even the officer involved said he was surprised the media didn’t attend the hearing. When the force discovered the name of the officer might have been leaked to the media, its internal affairs department was instructed to try and find the source of the leak. With a clean record, the officer will get his sergeant’s rank back. However, the problem for the officer and the force will come if he is put in a position of giving evidence under oath in court cases. The service took a tongue lashing for the “secrecy” on Facebook. ... When it comes to dealing with taxpayers’ money, some politicians are using a new math - subtracting by adding. ... THIS AND THAT Most of us don’t need a oneyear study by a group of “experts” to alert us to the fact that auto insurance premiums in Ontario are expensive. By the way, what ever happened to Preem Kathy’s hyped 15% cut in insurance rates? Same folks who have increased the cost of driving with hefty increases in licence and plate fees, not to mention the pending cap and trade rip-off that will increase pump prices and make it even more expensive to drive. ... When it comes to landing a job as a firefighter with Cornwall Fire Department, having experience and training as a rural parttime firefighter is a big asset. Problem is, applicants from the city can’t get that valuable experience because most rural “volunteer” departments require that applicants live in the municipality the department serves. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Recent mention of kids who had part-time jobs delivering groceries with a bicycle caught the attention of Jim Sallie (retired CN). He recalled growing up in Montreal and delivering beer for a neighbourhood depanneur. His best time of year was at Christmas. “On Christmas Eve I’d make $15 in tips, which was big money in those days,” said Jim. He would replace the bicycle with a wagon to haul cases of 24 to neighbourhood customers. ... Singer Sewing machine and TV repairmen who made

If you wanted a straight answer, on just about any subject, you gave Judy Bobka a call. She never pulled any punches, as they say. None of this just tell them what they want to hear. You asked for her thoughts on an issue, you got her unvarnished opinion. Shortly after I was elected to city council, I asked for her views on a variety of subjects. Next day she forwarded an email with a list of ideas and suggestions on how to make Cornwall an even better place to live. Judy was a political junkie without the political correctness b.s. Back in the 1990s she broke a huge gender barrier; she became the first female chair of the Cornwall Community Police Service board. Some what ironic that a staunch big C conservative would hold that distinction. Two things she wore on her sleeve were her loyalty to Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School and the Conservative Party. She truly was Mrs. Conservative. And you could throw in Iron Lady, too. She graduated from the Collegiate in 1958 and returned after university and a teaching gig in Northern Ontario. She finished a 34-year teaching career at her alma mater in 1995. She was instrumental in organizing school reunions and was keeper of the school archives. Interest in her students didn’t stop the day she retired. In local federal and provincial politics, she was a mover and a shaker. She played a big role in the successful campaigns that elected Guy Lauzon and Jim McDonell. Eric Duncan, the young mayor of North Dundas and a rising star in StormontDundas-South Glengarry, had no bigger fan. She counted the late Jim Flaherty and his wife, Christine Elliott, who is running for the Ontario Conservative leadership job, as personal friends. John Baird, too. When Christine Elliott made an early-morning whirlwind visit to Cornwall back in March, she set aside time to visit her ailing friend. She was president of the local Conservative riding association. Last week, shortly after arriving at Cornwall Hospice, Judy passed away. She was 75. The anticipated federal campaign, one that she was looking forward too, won’t be the same, at least for the Conservatives, without Judy Bobka serving as field marshal. A rallying cry for the local Conservatives might be, “Win It For Judy”. TRIVIA This Canadian Prime Minister turned the first sod at Maple Grove (along old Hwy. 2 about two miles west of Cornwall’s western limit
at the time - Cumberland Street) that officially launched the long-awaited St. Lawrence Power Project. He was joined by New York State Governor Thomas Dewey and Ontario Premier Leslie Frost. TRIVIA ANSWER The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was filmed at Upper Canada Village in October 1972. It was produced for CBS Television. It featured veteran actors Jane Wyatt, who played Aunt Polly, and Buddy Ebsen. Wyatt is best remembered as the mother on Father Knows Best and the human mother of Spock in the Star Trek TV series. Ebsen played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz and Jedd Clampett in Beverly Hillbillies. He was Davy Crockett’s sidekick, Georgie Russell, in the Disney TV series Davy Crockett. Wyatt died on Oct. 20, 2006 at age 96. Ebsen died July 1, 2003. He was 95. SPORTS STUFF The hockey playing son of a British rock legend? It is Liam Stewart, son of Rod Stewart and former model Rachel Hunter. He suited up for Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League this season. A forward, he scored 25 goals and finished with 53 points in 71 games. He was born in England but calls Hermosa Beach, Calif. home. ... Gerry Paquette new president of Cornwall Curling Centre’s senior division. He takes over from Brian Landry. ... Wayne Lauber’s rink won the closing seniors draw. ... Bruce Jenner could make history. He could become the first male Olympic gold medal winner (decathlon, 1976) to go on to win a women’s masters gold medal. As they say in Texas, who would have thunk it. ... Activities such as these satisfy a need for an adrenaline rush. At the opposite end of the reason for travel is sheer indolence, inactivity, hedonism. The quest for such travel includes searchi n g fo r a l l i n c l u s i ve f i ve s t a r accommodations. The torpidity can take place under a beach umbrella, in a hotel room or in a cruise ship cabin. There’s a do not disturb sign hanging on the door knob. Some travel as part of their desperate search for their soul mate. Barflies tend to find their barfly mates at bars, birds of a feather flock together, so make sure you look for your soul mate in an environment where you are doing something you are passionate about. The 1989 fall of the Iron Curtain opened up yet another reason for travel: digging for
genealogical roots. Those of us of eastern European extraction are now free to visit the land where their ancestors made ends ‘meat’ by stuffing sausages, or servicing Ladas, Yugos, Skodas and Trabants. The reasons for travel are multitude, but I’ll close for now with epicurean-tourism. Tired of the fare thrust at us through drive-thru windows, some follow their nose down foreign back alleys to find something different for their palate. Strangely, there are also other travellers (I prefer to call them ‘tourists’) who yearn for familiar foods in foreign lands, i.e. a McDonalds in Botswana, English-style fish and chips in Timbuktu or an Argentine poutine. When I travel, I come back with an appreciation for what we have at home – clean tap water, freedom of expression and worship, streets that are safe to walk at night, traffic that moves with a modicum of order and a government that isn’t as bad as all the others.

Winter tires are important for keeping you safe on the road during the hazardous conditions of snowy and icy roads. But as the snow starts to melt and the days get warmer, you might start thinking about switching back to all-season or summer tires. Before you make the switch, here are some factors that can influence your timing. It’s safe to remove your winter tires once the average daily high is above 5 C and the risk of snow or frost has passed. Keep an eye on the averages in your area and take a look at the long range forecast before switching out. Late spring snowfall isn’t unusual in many parts of Canada, so be prepared; Environment Canada can give you the information you need. Remember that black ice isn’t visible, so the temperature is an important factor in ensuring you are safe on the road. Before you take them off, you should know where you’re going to put them. Improper storage of your winter tires can lead to damage that will shorten their lifespan. Ask around; dealerships often offer winter tire storage that will keep
them out of your garage and in a proper storage facility. If you plan to store them at home, be sure to follow these important tips: • Purchase proper storage bags and store each tire in its own individual bag • Do not hang the tires, instead stack them carefully • Do not stack more than four tires high • Store in a cool, dry place

CORNWALL, Ontario - Former Cornwall Colts star forward Kyle Baun has signed a two year entry level agreement with the Chicago Blackhawks. Baun spent the past three seasons playing at Colgate University where he collected 79 points in 113 games. Before that, Baun spent two years as a member of the Colts (103 points in 98 games). The 22 year old Baun was being touted as
one of the top prized prospects from the US College ranks this season. Detroit, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg were said to be in the running to sign Baun, the grandson of Toronto Maple Leafs legend Bobby Baun. Baun joins the list of former Colts with NHL experience including Chad Kilger, Eric Meloche, Kent McDonell, Cam Barker, Yann Danis and Jesse Winchester.

Finding the Knight’s Trophy, sort of Thom Racine A few weeks ago, I ran a story about the Knight’s trophy. Accompanied by a picture, the story told a historical family tale. Problem was, I was asking if the man in the picture was Dr. Knight posing with his Knight’s trophy. The Knight’s trophy was awarded to the town hockey champions for about ten years from 19251935, the trophy was donated by Dr. William Knight, a Cornwall dentist during the first thirty years of the twentieth century. In fact, there were two Knight’s trophies, the first one was claimed by the Howard Smith Papermen after their second straight city league championship in 1927 and not returned, so Dr. Knight minted a second one. The original story solved a few things thanks to you, the readers. Darlene Hollingsworth provided a picture of the first trophy and the HSPM team posing with it. The Knight family also confirmed that the man in the picture was not their father and grandfather, so that mystery still remains, who was the man and what did his trophy commemorate? Bill Amell had the same picture of the man and his cup in his mothers photo album, but she nor Bill, knew why it was there or who the man was. Jennifer Knight got in touch and although

Household maintenance is an essential part of being a home owner. Not only does it ensure that your internal environment stays healthy, but it is also necessary to maintain your new home warranty if you live in a house or condominium that is less than seven years old. All new homes in Ontario come with a warranty that lasts seven years from the date of the first possession, and this warranty is guaranteed by Tarion Warranty Corporation. The warranty protects homeowners from things like water penetration through the basement or foundation walls; defects in the electrical, plumbing and heating systems; and major structural damage, among other problems. But in order to ensure your home stays covered, you are advised to perform regular seasonal maintenance. Here are some tips to ensure it remains in good shape: • Clear eavestroughs of debris regularly and extend downspouts so that water is directed away from your home. Water that flows around the foundation could eventually find its way into the basement. • Have your roof inspected regularly to ensure shingles, flashing and chimney caps are in place and sealed properly. • Fix the caulking around windows and doors and on the roof if it becomes cracked or separated. • Clean or replace your furnace filter. • Check air ducts, remove covers and vacuum dust from vents. • Investigate and identify any musty smells and odours. They are often an indicator that there is a hidden moisture problem. • In the winter, shut off exterior water supply
and drain water lines. • Install winter cover for air conditioning unit. • Check roofing and flashing for signs of wear or damage. • Check/clean heat recovery ventilator (HRV); wash or replace filter. • Clean the mechanisms of the humidifiers. • Check for condensation and proper humidity levels. It’s important to remember that ongoing maintenance helps to ensure that your statutory warranty is protected. After you move in, you are advised to follow an annual maintenance routine to help keep your new home in top shape.

Shar’s Tip of the Week
Washing Machines Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the inside dry after every use. Leave the lid up until the tub is dry. To sanitize the washer, select a rinse cycle and fill the washer for the smallest load size. Before agitaton starts, add 1 1/2 cups of liquid chlorine bleach to the water, and close the lid. Let the washer go through its normal cycle, once completed, dry the inside tub. repeat this about every 4 to 5 months.

He never looks for praises He’s never one to boast He just goes on quietly working For those he loves the most His dreams are seldom spoken His wants are very few And most of the time his worries Will go unspoken too He’s there… A firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold to In times of stress and strife A true friend we can turn to When times are good or bad One of our greatest blessings, The man that we call Dad. A heart of gold stopped beating. Two shining eyes at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Little did we know that morning. The sorrow the day would bring. The end was sudden, the shock severe. We never knew that death was so near. When days are sad and lonely. And evening shadows fall. We hear your voice and see your face. Your sweet memory lingers on. God knew you had to leave us. But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you. The day God called you home. Love and miss you both, Donna, Lisa, Carl, Carli and Bianca

The Agape Centre would like to thank Vivian Theoret of Juliannah’s Dress & Bridal in Moose Creek for her donation of more than $700 and about 100 gowns and prom dresses. Not only will this gift help many young women enjoy their prom experience, but it will also support our services. March Break is over, the clocks have moved ahead one hour and spring is officially here. Bring on the warm weather! Way to Go ... Carmen Beauregard got a “Holein-One” on March 25/15 in Myrtle Beach. Congratulations!

From a reader ... “It’s a shame! We can’t even call it a sidewalk on the side of First St. between McConnell and Belmont St., especially on the northern side. It’s broken cement and asphalt all the way through. We also pay our taxes ... please, pretty please, think of us when it’s time to build new sidewalks.”

Two priests died at the same time and met Saint Peter at the Pearly Gate. St. Peter said, “I’d like to get you guys in now, but our computer is down. “You will have to go back to Earth for about a week, but you can’t go back as priests. “ “What’ll it be?” The first priest asked, “I’ve always wanted to be an an eagle, soaring above the Rocky Mountains .” “So be it,” says St. Peter, and off flies the first priest. The second priest mulls this over for a moment and asks, “Will any of this week ‘count’ St. Peter?” “ No I told you the computer is down, there’s no way we can keep track of what you are 6122076 doing.” “ In that case” says the second priest, “I’ve always wanted to be a stud.” “So be it” says St. Peter, and the second priest disappears. A week goes by, the computer is fixed, and the Lord tells St. Peter to recall the two priests. “Will you have any trouble locating them?” He asks. “The first one should be easy,” says St. Peter, “He’s somewhere over the Rockies, flying with the eagles. But the second one could prove to be more difficult. “Why” asks the Lord. “He’s on a snow tire, somewhere in New Brunswick .”

Thought of the Week: Happiness held is the seed; happiness shared is the flower.
FOR TWO POUR DEUX
Get your garden ready: Before garden season, wash patio containers with a solution of one part liquid bleach and nine parts water to kill disease pathogens. Sharpen shovel and lawn mower blades. Check hoses for leaks, oil garden cart wheels. In the month of April, turn compost piles. Edge the lawn. Uncover roses when buds are red and prune back to live greenwood. Cut back overgrown clematis and honeysuckle vines. Remove last year’s fruit-bearing canes from raspberries. Handy Tip of the Week: You can recycle your plastic bags from bread, buns, English muffins and rolls by reusing them as gloves for handling raw meat, for protecting hands from harsh cleaners or for poop and scoop … and “Bravo” to all the responsible dog walkers out there who bring along their poop bags. You are setting a good example.

Trillium grant rollout: Quilt of Belonging gets a digital upgrade ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - When artist Esther Bryan started the Quilt of Belonging in the fall of 1998, apps were something on a menu, not your phone. Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell announced Wednesday, April 8, a total of $56,500 in Ontario Trillium Foundation funding for the touring textile art exhibit born in Williamstown, Ont. The grant money is to be doled out over 12 months to create a new website with current
technology, information, and educational resources in English, French, Mohawk, Ojibwe, Oji-Cree, and Inuktituk. “The Quilt of Belonging is a tangible testimony to Ontario’s and Canada’s diversity, openness, and unity,” said McDonell at his second Trillium grant announcement of the day. “Through its tours and educational material, the quilt has brought together Canadians across generational, cultural, and geographical divides.” Bryan celebrated the cash boost with Malcolm Robertson, board chair, Helja Thomson, volunteer coordinator, Daphne Howells,
researcher/embroider, and Joanne High, staff/ volunteer, at the QOB office on 2 Oak Street in Lancaster. The quilt consists of 263 11-inch fabric squares, 70 representing all Aboriginal groups, 193 featuring all immigrant nationalities in Canada and the Canadian block. Bryan noted that the Internet and smartphones weren’t a factor when she started what is now considered to be a national treasure, and has already had more than 1.4 million visitors while on tour in the past decade. There are currently three local firms vying for the contract to build the new “dynamic” website
and phone app. “We plan to design new resources as well, that are interactive, fun, and relevant to students and educators at all grade levels,” said Bryan. Quilt of Belonging partners include the Native North American Travelling College, The Debajehmujig Creation Centre, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canadian Ethnocultural Council, Centre Charles-Emile Claude, Centre Culturel de Cornwall, and Akwesasne Area Management Board.
