CORNWALL, Ontario - The long-awaited consolidation of the Hotel Dieu Hospital and Cornwall General Hospital sites into a state-ofthe-art facility was celebrated at a ribbon cutting ceremony. A long list of politicians who have been involved with the $120-million three-phase renovation of the Cornwall Community Hospital spoke to a large crowd in the building’s main entrance on Friday, April 24. Cornwall Hospital Board chair Michael Turcotte introduced all 10 of the speakers. “Much like we watched the new addition take shape brick by brick, it was all your involvement that formed the structure of what is now a state-of-the-art facility in Cornwall,” said Turcotte. Ottawa South MPP John Fraser, parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Long-Term Care, congratulated staff, volunteers, the Cornwall Hospital Foundation Board, and officials from Cornwall, the United Counties of SDG, and Akwesasne for working cohesively together in securing $12-million. “What this project did was bring people together,” said Fraser. He noted that the building boasts six new operating rooms, brighter and more spacious rooms, a high-tech diagnostic centre of excellence, and tall windows to literally brighten up a patient’s stay. Four years later, the CCH opened the West Wing of the new hospital. “Here in Ontario our hospitals are the best, not just in Canada but in the world – and I think the Cornwall hospital is one of them,” said Madeleine Meilleur, Ontario’s francophone affairs minister.

Other speakers included Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, Champlain LHIN CEO Chantale LeClerc, United Counties Warden and North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan, SDSG MPP Jim McDonell, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) Executive Director Sheree Bonaparte,, SDSG MPP Guy Lauzon, Cornwall Hospital Foundation board Allan Wilson, and Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) CEO Jeanette Despatie.

Teenage prank led to Dairy Queen closure: owner Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - It appears as though a teenage prank led to the closure of Cornwall’s Dairy Queen, with customers complaining of fits of coughing, choking and nausea. Emergency officials had to close the restaurant Saturday (April 25) around 9 p.m., after what many thought to be ammonia or some other chemical had spilled at the popular ice cream shop. Instead, owner Nolan Quinn tells Seaway News it appears as though a pair of teenage boys may have approached the Dairy Queen and fired something into the store, and then ran away. Quinn said security camera footage shows a pair of boys, one on a skateboard and another on a bicycle, approach the doors “and do something.” Quinn said the boys then “high tail” it off the Dairy Queen property and into the nearby Home Hardware. Cornwall Community Police Service Sgt. Marc Fortin said that he’s unaware of any of those

details and that the case is closed. “There was nothing suspicious or unusual and nothing came out of it.” said Fortin. In the aftermath customers were left choking and coughing, with some feeling even worse. “My daughter and I were there this evening and everyone in the store started coughing like we all inhaled something,” Suzanne Sauve posted on the Seaway News Facebook page. “Employees as well. They had to open the doors, some people had to go outside, they were coughing so bad. My daughter coughed so bad, she went outside and vomited. Our whole drive home, we coughed.” Quinn put to rest suggestions that ammonia had spilled – his ice cream machines run on Freon. He added all the machines are in top working order and are inspected regularly. He also ruled out natural gas. “We were pretty confident initially that it wasn’t gas as the occurrence of coughing was not behind the grill area or the back of the store and it had no natural gas smell,” Quinn wrote on Facebook, in a message to DQ customers.

Firefighters and paramedics investigate the scene at Dairy Queen in Cornwall on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Adam Brazeau A total of six firefighters and two fire trucks were at the scene. “From the original report there was a smell, but when the fire department went through the building and monitored the air, nothing was detected,” said Platoon Chief Luc Richer. “It was then turned over to police for an investigation.”

Quinn said the item that was potentially thrown into the store was kept to the front area where customers were standing, adding his cooks in the back were unaware of anything that happened. “We called police, fire and EMS because they are the experts,” said Quinn.

Can’t compare taxes in Cornwall and rural communities: auditor “People always come in and say it is much lower (in the counties),” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. Auditor Jamie Pollock pointed out that residents in South Stormont and South Glengarry also have to pay an upper-tier tax bill to the United Counties, in addition to the bills sent out by the lower tiers. Markell suggested more competent comparisons can be made between Cornwall and a city like Belleville, which has a similar population. Cornwall, he said, collected about $59 million in taxes in 2013, while Belleville hauled in

a whopping $77.5 million. He pointed to Belleville’s assessment total, which is a staggering $4.3 billion, while in Cornwall the number is closer to $2.6 billion. The smaller amount of taxes collected can be a double-edged sword, though, said Markell. “You just don’t have the horses to bill for a bunch of things you’d like to do,” he said. “We all know every municipality has issues with aging infrastructure and all that. You’re still in a good financial position. But the other municipalities are starting to catch up to you. Or you’re catching down.”

www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Seaway News - Thursday, April 30, 2015 - 3

CORNWALL, Ontario - City council tried to pour cold water Monday night on a heated debate concerning the amount of taxes people pay in Cornwall versus neighbouring rural municipalities. City councillors got an earful regarding Cornwall’s financial picture, and both council and the auditors waded into the debate concerning the amount of taxes residents here pay, versus residents in places like South Glengarry and South Stormont. Taxpayers pay less in those rural

communities, as much as 30 per cent in some areas, but auditor Ross Markell suggested making comparisons between local municipalities is an apples and oranges argument. “You can only provide a simplistic comparison. There’s too many variables,” he said, pointing to things like assessment and market values that drive up (or down) the cost of properties and taxes, not to mention services provided. “For anybody to analyze it down…is very difficult because someone can always come the other way and say you haven’t brought this in, or brought that in.” But council still hears the argument.

New Cornwall doctor faces prospect of no partners, city hall lobbies for provincial help Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s first medical recruitment bursary winner may be forced to work alone, without the support of more experienced colleagues, if the city is unsuccessful in landing provincial support. But city hall has her back. Dr. Vanessa Carter must start a family practice in Cornwall, as part of an agreement she has with city hall that saw her net $150,000 to help pay for her education. The province is rolling out 20 so-called “Family Health Group” spots this year, where

groups of three or more doctors work in collaboration together. If Cornwall is unsuccessful in getting one of those spots, Carter will have to go it alone. “If she is forced to work on a fee-for-service basis, it would be a huge decrease in the income she had been expecting to make, not to mention the difficulties of working in a solo practice, with no backup, or support from more experienced colleagues,” said Dr. Raji Menon, the president of the Cornwall Academy of Medicine, in a letter to Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Eric Hoskins. City hall received her letter Monday night, and council tasked M ayor Leslie

O’Shaughnessy with writing to the minister as well. O’Shaughnessy will be lobbying for one of the 20 Family Health Group spots. “Make sure the letter is strong,” said DR. CARTER Coun. Brock Frost. A report from economic development manager Mark Boileau suggests the province’s new rules will make it “less attractive to new medical prac titioners in our community.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - The 13th edition of Hike for Hospice gets underway in Cornwall this Sunday. The outdoor fundraiser kicks off National Hospice Palliative Care Week (May 3-9). Sandy Collette, fundraising coordinator for Carefor Hospice Cornwall, said roughly 200 people helped raise $54,000 in 2014. “Online registrations are up, so it looks like we’ll be ahead this year, but usually participants just register on site,” said Collette. The event will begin at the hospice, located at 1507 Second Street West. Walkers will head towards the bike path for about half an hour before circling back.

Since the centre only receives partial government funding, every year $500,000 has to be raised to meet its operational budget. “The hike and our telethon are our two biggest fundraisers,” said Collette. Collette credited Ray O’Collin, a senior resident of Cornwall, for raising nearly $60,000 at the hike over the last six years. He’s already collected another $6,000 of pledges for 2015. “We usually have a moment of silence to celebrate the lives of people who have passed through the doors of hospice,” said Collette. Pledge forms are available at the 10-bed palliative care home. Registration opens at noon. Event starts at 1 p.m. For more information, visit cornwallhospice.com.

Menon agrees, and said in her letter this new reality for med school graduates is a tough pill to swallow and will not mitigate the growing list of residents who have no doctor. “Cornwall has a huge number of orphan patients, and with every physician we can recruit, we hope to improve those numbers by a few thousand at least,” she wrote in her letter. “ Based on the recent events, and the uncertainty of it all, we are afraid our recruitment efforts may not pay off, just when it was ready to bear fruit.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Art Gallery – Cornwall won’t be getting any more money out of city hall this year. Councillors decided Monday night to keep an extra $12,000 that would have gone to the now-cancelled Lift-Off hot-air balloon festival instead of giving it to the gallery, which had its funding capped at $13,500 this year. “To me it was simple – we would have this $12,000, they were the group that was the most impacted (by outside agency funding cuts). Why would we penalize the art gallery when we didn’t have money? Well now we

have money.” But councillors are still troubled by internal strife at the art gallery. Coun. Claude McIntosh suggested Dupelle wanted to shelve art gallery funding until things changed at the art gallery when it comes to governance. “Things have changed – they’ve lost two more board members and the director,” he said. Both councillors David Murphy and Andre Rivette pointed to a slew of arts funding from city hall, including Your Arts Council, Aultsville Theatre and the Cornwall Community Museum among others.

Big Bike rides through Cornwall Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s more than just a bicycle ride for Lana Kovinich. Three years ago at a relative’s wedding ceremony, her father, Vuk, died suddenly of a heart attack. He was 62. In his memory, family members and local lawyers banded together for the Big Bike ride fundraising event at the Royal Canadian Legion in Cornwall on Saturday (April 25). “I’m so grateful to see such a great turnout in support of my dad and the Heart & Stroke Foundation,” said Kovinich. The large red bike has 29 seats, plus one for the driver, and each participant raises funds by collecting pledges. The squad of Kovinichs and attorneys raised $4,275, the second-largest amount of the day.

“It’s a little cool out, but all the participants have warms hearts and are here to ride,” said Cindy Rowe, area manager of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario SDG-PR&A office. The goal is to raise $16,000 from the Cornwall edition of the annual ride before it heads into the townships. The two-day event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Big Bike will start from the RCAFA building on Water Street. An appreciation breakfast for over 120 Heart & Stroke Foundation volunteers was also held at the Legion early that morning. Lana Kovinich (middle) leads the charge in memory of her father at the annual Heart & Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike ride on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Adam Brazeau

CORNWALL, Ontario – City council held off on throwing down the gauntlet with South Glengarry concerning the huge costs Cornwall taxpayers shell out for the Summerstown Airport. Councillors shelved a motion Monday night to pull its funding, as much as 92 per cent of the total bill, if a new agreement was not found by the end of this year. Too many felt it was overly heavy-handed, and instead Cornwall will seek a date to kickstart talks without the threat of a funding cut looming. “It’s not that we have anything against the airport…they do service the municipality,” said Coun. David Murphy. “But we’re looking for a fair funding agreement. “To me that is just not a fair funding agreement – for any municipality. We should kickstart those negotiations. The time is now.” The city will pay $123,800 this year for the airport. But Coun. Elaine MacDonald suggested the city was setting itself up to be seen as threatening “Going about it in this way, laying down an ultimatum…is not conducive to us coming to any kind of agreement,” she said. “We should proceed by diplomacy and forget the threats.” Coun. Claude McIntosh agreed. “I think we should tweak this. We should go in and negotiate,” he said. “What if we say like it or

lump it? What if they say lump it? Then what do we do?” But Coun. Andre Rivette took issue with that. “This has been going on for three or four years. Sometimes we have to stand up and be counted,” he said. “It’s not a threat. It’s concern about the taxpayers of Cornwall.” Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said Cornwall should remain as diplomatic as possible. “It’s the City of Cornwall that wanted the airport and it’s the City of Cornwall that agreed to the terms of the agreement,” he said. “But don’t say (a funding cut threat) isn’t threatening, because it is. “Do you want to negotiate in a business-like manner, or do you want to do it in a threatening manner?” Cornwall CAO Norm Levac is expected to contact his counterpart in South Glengarry to begin canvassing dates to meet.

Step up and walk a mile in her shoes: SASS Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Dozens of men will brave the pain of walking in red high heels to raise awareness for women who endure the agony of domestic violence and sexual assault. Sexual Assault Support Services for Women of SDG&A’s fourth edition of the walk takes place at Lamoureux Park beside the splash pad on Saturday, May 30. “This event is about men taking a stance for women,” said Angela Vinet, executive director at SASS. In 2014, a group of 50 participants varying in ages helped raise $6,000. Once again, manly men will be asked to strut their stuff from the play structure to the former Si Miller Arena site on Montreal Road, before veering back to the starting point. Vinet said a majority of the funds raised last year went into training counsellors to better serve the community, while the remainder helped with day-to-day operations.

SASS, a non-profit organization based in Cornwall, provides free support to victims/survivors of sexual violence. Services include accompaniment to the police station, hospital, or court, one-on-one counseling, information/support groups, as well as public education. SASS has one counsellor, Kim Bauserfeld, and is pushing for funding to get another. Vinet is currently finalizing fourth quarter stats from the April 2014 to April 2015 fiscal year. And the numbers speak volumes. “We’ve already surpassed last year in our third quarter - I’m estimating we served nearly 200 clients,” she said. “They’re looking for the tools to heal.” This week alone five new ones walked through the door. Jillian Reed, public education and volunteer coordinator at SASS, encourages participants to register ahead to save them the trouble of shoe shopping. SASS has 50 pairs of the fancy footwear from sizes 9-14 to lend out, thanks to a grant from the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall.

“If you can’t walk in heels wear your own shoes instead. Either way, we hope everyone comes out to cheer the men on,” said Vinet. This year, the walk will grow to make it more family-oriented. In addition to a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Cornwall Fire Department will be on hand as well as various booths including Seaway Slot Racing. Local businesses, sports teams, and organizations are also encouraged to register and walk a mile in her shoes. Pledge forms can be picked up at SASS for Women (123 Amelia St.) or Summit Health Fitness (1515 Pitt St.). Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. on site. The walk kicks off at 11 a.m. For more information, contact Jillian Reed at 613-932-1755 ext. 27. MELANIE BRULÉE: New release about a new release CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s been a few years since one of our own, local musician, Melanie Brulée, moved to Toronto to pursue her promising music career. It’s been a journey of discovery, healing and creating, as she readies herself to return home, for the release her upcoming French-language CD, Débridée. Meaning “unbridled,” the word, débridé, which would become the creative driving force of the new recording, came up in a casual conversation, a while back, with a couch surfer from Paris (as is the case with most creative inspirations… N’est-ce pas?). “I just became sort of obsessed with that word,” said Brulée. “I held on to it from there on, to the imagery of that and how that felt within me.” “I wanted to feel free of shackles and unrestrained; it personified who I wanted to be.” Later, that year, a trip to France, set in motion a series of events, where one thing would lead to another, and eventually, to the album. “I started writing poetry in French, getting (my) language skills back,” said Brulée, who had attended francophone school, but felt she was losing it, over the years. “I had to make a decision to hold on to my culture.” “Some were good and some were awful,” she said of her poems. “It was a matter of getting that happening in my brain again.” The idea, she said, was to use them as little “memory markers,” to then write songs for the album. The whole process took a lot longer than

6202752

Brulée had thought it would. “I was lucky to do a lot of collaborations with Melanie Brulée other francophone artists; Anique Granger, she’s a huge influence on this album. She really helped me lyrically, helped me paint some pictures and helped me get out what I wanted to say with proper grammar. French is a complicated language.” As art often does, Brulée said that album started changing. The name of the album took on a life of its own. “I realized when all was said and done and written and recorded that the album was about healing the inner children within me” she said. “Particularly, the void left by the death of my father, at a young age.” It turns out there was a lot of her father, not coincidentally a horse trainer, in those poems, but certainly subconsciously, the impetus for the album, and the symbolic interpretation by its artist. Brulée will be bringing her new, four piece band, for a local launch with a dinner and show, at Truffles Burger Bar. Visit www.melaniebrulee. com. Photo by Jen Squires. CORNWALL, Ontario - For the 14th year, hundreds ran for a cure in Cornwall. Cold temperatures and fair-weather runners (and walkers) resulted in a lukewarm response to the annual outdoor fundraiser on Saturday (April 25). Starting at St. Lawrence College, 300 people laced up for a five and 10 kilometre run and a half marathon to help raise $18,500 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Cornwall & District chapter. “Although it was cold and cloudy, that did not

put a damper on the runner’s spirits,” said Guy St-Jean, chair of the local MS Society. Numbers continued to dwindle this year because of bad weather and a harsh winter for training, according to Karen Torrie-Racine, volunteer office manager. “I have participated in the past and even though there were less participants, the event was great,” Stephanie Cowan wrote on the event’s Facebook page. She thanked the numerous volunteers who worked in chilly conditions at various aid stations throughout the course. Proceeds will help the local MS Society

Eeko’s Splash Landing: From storyteller to storywriter Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

5776863

CORNWALL, Ontario - The last time newly minted children’s author and Cornwall native Diane Charbonneau expressed herself creatively was in high school. In her career, the Ottawa resident developed contribution agreements for policing services at Public Safety Canada, which she described as very technical and complex writing. Now Charbonneau crosses the line between fact and fiction with the launch of her first book Eeko’s Splash Landing at the Cornwall Public Library on Saturday (April 25). “One day while visiting my son Jeff and his family, my grandson Xavier and I started playing a game called ‘continue the story,’” said Charbonneau. During one session, an alien crashed in the youngster’s backyard. Then, Xavier gave the close encounter a soggy twist. Motivated by her grandson’s vivid imagination, Charbonneau completed the book in three weeks. PHARMACY

“If you’re motivated to write, that’s the easy part,” she said. “I hand wrote the whole manuscript. For me, it was easier because I could scratch things out, write in the margins, come back to it later.” The next step was to share it with family and close friends. Their encouragement inspired her to publish it. Originally her goal was to send the manuscript to a printer and just get 10 copies. “Not only did I write a book that’s fun and imaginative, but I also put in some life lessons,”said Charbonneau. “There is something in this book for kids to learn.” She described Eeko’s Splash Landing as a story for children that encourages teamwork, making new friends, problem solving, acceptance of diversity and the value in helping others. It’s geared for 7 and 12 year olds despite being inspired by a five-year-old boy. The important questions readers will have to answer: how do you find parts to fix an alien spaceship? Where on earth do you find fuel? Will Eeko be able to return home? “I guess you’ll have to read the book to find out,” she told the crowd of a few dozen.

Cornwall native Diane Charbonneau at the launch of her first book Eeko’s Splash Landing at the Cornwall Public Library on Saturday (April 25). A dam Brazeau Charbonneau researched both going with a publishing house or self-publishing, and for her the safest bet was the latter. This way she keeps creative control of the book. Charbonneau praised FriesenPress for walking her through the introductory phase of publishing her first book. The pages are filled with 25 illustrations by Teghan Sargeant, Xavier’s 15-year-old babysitter. “The artwork blends perfectly with the book,” said Charbonneau. “She captured the essence of the characters and the scenes. It’s almost like she

could read my mind.” Charbonneau encouraged the crowd to follow their creative side, too. “If any of you were ever thinking about writing a book, do so,” said Charbonneau. “It’s hard work, the editing is long, but it was so worth it.” And the adventure has just begun. “There’s a good chance that there will be an Eeko 2, and maybe even a series,” she said. The paperback edition ($9.99) is available at the library and Kid’s Korner and an e-edition ($2.99) can be purchased from FreisenPress.

COUNCIL NOTICE

OPINION

Say a prayer for the rest of us...and the Jedi? Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

To pray, or not to pray? If the Supreme Court has anything to say about it (and it has everything to say about it) the practice at municipal council meetings will need a full-blown resurrection if it is to return. This past week city council shelved “invocation” because a bleeding heart in Quebec felt his rights were being cast aside as he was forced to sit through (gasp!) prayers in the busy little ‘burg of Saguenay. The Supreme Court case dates back to 2007, when Alain Simoneau, an atheist, complained about the Catholic prayers recited by the mayor and councillors at the beginning of each city council meeting. Simoneau also complained about the crucifix and a Sacred Heart statue in the meeting room. So, because Simoneau couldn’t keep his feelings to himself we have to get in line behind a Supreme Court decision that has the faithful screaming and the rest of us wondering just what the hubbub is about. Should prayers be kept? Perhaps a better question is where do you draw the line when it comes to the church and the state? In Cornwall most of the bases were covered. We went to get lengths to be inclusive of everyone. A group, I believe it is referred to as the inter-faith partnership, co-ordinated a

rotating roster of local spiritual leaders who would offer prayers prior to council meetings. It wasn’t like Cornwall city council meetings favoured one faith over another. Christians (all denominations), Muslims and Jews were offered a spot at the table to invoke a prayer in the name of their creator. There were even some suggestions, I am told, that wags who follow something called ‘Dudeism’ were going to ask to be included on the roster. Sigh – anything to create a stir. I suppose Jedi Knights were next. Anyway, the mayor’s office got wind of it, and before the Supreme Court got involved council had planned to silence a debate over what is religion here in Fun City by instituting something called a “moment of silent reflection.” Such a moment would see people offer thanks, and ask for guidance, to whatever deity they deem fit – if any. It gets around the Supreme Court decision and still allows some kind of spiritual expression. Coun. Bernadette Clement wants the Supreme Court decision examined in greater detail – but something tells me once the justices make a decision there’s very little that can be done. It says here we’re going to get that “silent moment” thing…or nothing at all.

Letters to the Editor

In the meantime city administrators will examine the Supreme Court decision and prepare a report to council. Was there a thunderclap Monday night when the prayer was skipped? Nope – unless you count the groans from the audience when city auditor Ross Markell remarked that his firm wouldn’t be poring over every line of the municipal financial statements because “we’d be here until the Maple Leafs make the playoffs again.” I’ve never been an overly spiritual or “religious” person. While others are likely to have a different view, the practice at council meetings was not something I spent a lot of time examining or covering…until now.

To be honest, I consider it pretty harmless. I never felt as though my rights as a Canadian or Cornwallite were being infringed upon because someone wanted to pay respect, in a public way, to god. In fact, I think the Supreme Court probably has a litany of decisions it could have (should have?) spent time on prior to this one. But it’s the price we pay for living in the best country in the world – you have to listen to everyone…even the nuts. *NOTE: Check out Page 35 of this week’s edition for a special treat I have included for local hockey fans.*

Dear editor: I have a concern that this entire event will play out once the country has a majority of French only citizens, the reverse action will play out from the West coast. Provinces will begin to set themselves up as English ONLY, filter into other provinces who allow there towns, villages, cities and districts redistribute via English for election times. Any city or town near our USA will have our English Commissioners turn a blind eye when

they sign up and insist stores and product labeling be in English only, proposing one day even if it takes 50 years like this current French wasted project to accomplish an English Proud ‘take back our country’ motto and special English only flags and banners everywhere. Dare to enter with French speak or written dogma and be arrested or fined by the English ONLY police, ALL WITH FRENCH TAX DOLLARS. Now how ridiculous would the French regime think of it. WELL, this is exactly why all

Protests will speak to Canada, loud and proud of us who live in this same bubble of CANADA, the land of free speech and Constitutional Rights feel is happening right now. It would be better if Quebec did in fact create there own limited bubble than to face 100 years of over burdened tax payers, FORCING FRENCHIFICATION IS MUCH HARDER AND WORSE FOR RELATIONS WITH EACH OTHER THAN TO HAVE PERSONAL DECISIONS AS TO WHETHER OR NOT WE DECIDE ON UR OWN TO LEARN A LANGUAGE.

Choice makes all the difference. NO choice presents a backlash of resentments throughout the country. Face up and fess up. Choice is the real and should be the only way to go. French to learn English, ‘by choice’. English to learn French, by choice. Gee, what a novel idea. We are all brothers and sisters on this planet island in the universe. Time to get along. Dave Windsor CORNWALL, Ontario

The true cost of the Duffy trial Dear editor, Mike Duffy’s diary entries (Globe and Mail, April 9, 2015) reveal his main activities as a Senator were as a front man for selling conservative programs and meeting with supporters and donors, urging donations, in and out of election campaigns. This is a complete corruption of the role of a senator whose job is to review government policy matters and to provide Parliament with sober second thought. Senators may pass bills, propose amendments to them or vote to defeat them. They are supposed to be acting in all our

interests - after all, we the taxpayers pay for their services regardless of political affiliation. Appointing someone like Mike Duffy to the Senate is just one example of the extent to which Prime Minister Harper is blatantly willing to violate our democratic systems to stay in power at any cost. It shows a lack of principles and a cynical abuse of power. It will be the court of public opinion that decides the appropriate judgement at the next election. Susan Towndrow Cornwall, Ontario

OPINION

Hats off to a fellow with a “nose for news” cases (unlike some of our chief Crown attorneys who have a lower profile than the court house custodian) that come through her office in Canton, but she goes for the jugular. She is renowned for crossing swords with County Court Judge Jerome Richards. He is Democrat. She is Republican. ... Get the feeling that you could write the negative responses from opposition parties before a government budget is unveiled. TRIVIA This private company operated Cornwall’s transit system from 1906 until 1971. TRIVIA ANSWER The New York Central Railway station was just east of Hoople Avenue on the north side of what was then Highway 2. The station closed on Feb. 14, 1957, ending 60 years of service. Other stations along the Ottawa-Cornwall line that closed with the final run were Finch, Embrun Russell and Ottawa. When the service was operating at full steam, literally, it also made stops at Black River, Newington, Berwick and Crysler. It was the proverbial “milk run”. Within a year of the station’s closing, the tracks were removed and the sta-

tion torn down. THIS AND THAT When John Kerry ran for president against Dubya, the Republicans attacked his Vietnam War record. (Kerry was a decorated combat vet who turned against the war when he came home). Overlooked was the fact that Bushy 2 sat out the war with an air force reserve unit in Texas. ... Instead of putting up plaques in public facilities honouring the politicians who made it possible, we should have a simple inscription - “Paid for by the People”, or as Bill O’Reilly of Fox News has coined the non-entitled unwashed, “The Folks”. SPORTS STUFF Don Cherry’s on-going claim that no professional hockey players - the good old Canadian variety that is - are involved with illegal drugs shows how out of touch he is with reality. ... Folks over at the Cornwall Colts office who organized the Colts-Royals alumni game can be forgiven if they were pulling for Les Canadiens Sunday night in Ottawa. If the Sens had forced a seventh game it would have been played Tuesday, the same night as the alumni game.

Marc Pilote, who passed away last week at age 63, spent his post-college career as a journalist in Cornwall, working first with the Standard-Freeholder and later taking his news gathering skills and great radio voice to the CJSS Radio news department. He worked for me in the late 1970s during my city editor tour of duty at the S-F. He covered the city hall and education beats. He was a first-class journalist who had, as they say, a nose for news. I can still hear him telling me, upon returning from city hall, “Oh boy. This is a dandy.” He was one of those guys who you figured was goofing off then would turn in two or three stories worthy of front page treatment. Not only was he a good journalist, but he was fun to be around. No ego. Just a great guy with a tremendous sense of humour and a boisterous laugh. Once when it came time to do the annual feel-good Progress Edition stories, Marc lamented at the prospect of possibly being assigned to do a particular story nobody wanted to touch. We decided that to be “fair” everyone would type their name on a piece of paper which would be put in a hat and drawn for the “dreaded” assignment that involved an obnoxious store owner. Marc’s name was pulled from the hat by an impartial participant recruited from the business office. “I knew it. I knew it,” he said, accepting his fate. What Marc didn’t know was that a plot had been hatched over some pops at the Lloyd George Hotel to “rig” the draw. Everyone typed “Marc Pilote” and put it in the hat. Don’t think he ever knew about the conspiracy. Marc loved to eat. Seaway News editor Todd Lihou, then with the S-F, tells the story of travelling with him, then with CJSS, to cover a news conference in Montreal. Marc had, on this particular day, a hunger for St. Hubert Barbecue chicken. “I think we drove around half of Montreal

trying to find a St. Hubert restaurant,” recalled Lihou. Sad that neither the radio station nor S-F mentioned his passing. But then again, the day after I retired after 42 years in the business, they ran a story about the news room intern who had started her two-month stint. I’m forever indebted to sports editor Kevin Gould for dedicating one of his sports columns to my career at the S-F. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Big Mike, as in Mike Heenan, mentions the Harmony Lunch and the Vet’s Cab stand on the west side of Pitt north of Fourth Street, Burton Heward’s car dealership and the neat ice cream store just south of the old police/fire station. ... Kennedy’s Confectionery on Pitt Street which had a great stock of model airplane kits. ... The silk mill at Cumberland and Fourth streets. ... Roy’s Motors at Sixth and Pitt streets, now Jiffy Muffler. ... Clark’s boarding house at Third and Augustus streets. ... The vacant chair factory lot at York and Third streets, now home to First Baptist Church. HERE AND THERE File this one under Class Act: When Bobby Orr heard that Bob Kilger’s daughter-in-law had expressed a desire to have him autograph his best-selling book, “Orr: My Story”, he put a call through to his former Oshawa Generals defence partner. Orr wanted her address so he could send an autographed copy. He also wished the former mayor a speedy recovery in his battle with cancer. ... To retired St. Lawrence College educator Pat Finucan, a bouquet for the touching and tasteful tribute to the late Richard Allaire he gave at the Children’s Treatment Centre bike-a-thon kick-off breakfast last Wednesday. THIS AND THAT The Crown (not the police) decided to drop a year-old case and it was given Armageddon/Second Coming story treatment by the S-F. Hey, this case wasn’t an anomaly. It happens all too often in the court system, along with plea bargaining. ... If you are charged with a serious crime just across the river in St. Lawrence County, the last person you want prosecuting you is District Attorney Mary Rain. I’ve been following her career through the pages of the Watertown Times and not only does she prosecute all the serious

Fatigue can prove a formidable foe to anyone. Exercise enthusiasts and couch potatoes alike periodically can suffer from fatigue, which can affect performance at work and one’s relationships with friends and family. Fatigue can be temporary or chronic, and while quick fixes like an energy drink might work for a little while, such solutions may only mask fatigue for a brief period before it returns once the stimulant wears off. Many times fending off fatigue involves making some lifestyle changes that can boost your energy over the long haul and make fatigue a distant memory. * Eat breakfast no matter what. According to a study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, a high-fiber, highcarbohydrate breakfast can increase alertness between breakfast and lunch, a period of time during which many professionals begin to feel fatigue settling in. Whole-wheat toast or a bowl of high-fiber cereal can pack an energetic punch that lasts all the way to lunchtime. * Choose high-energy snacks. One of the problems many people have when dealing with fatigue is how they choose to combat their feelings of sluggishness. Eating a candy bar from the office snack machine might seem like the ideal energy booster, but a sugar boost does not last very long. Chances are your feelings of fatigue will return sooner rather than later. * Give yourself a break. Burning the midnight oil might be necessary, but failing to take breaks throughout the day will likely exasperate any feelings of fatigue. That’s because taking periodic breaks throughout the workday has been proven to be very effective at combating fatigue. A study conducted at Louisiana State University compared a trio of different work schedules for workers who used a computer.

Leaving the office to take a brief, yet brisk, walk is one way to combat fatigue during the workday.

Those who took brief, frequent breaks were better at fighting fatigue and more productive at work than those who did not. A short break of 5 to 10 minutes can be enough to provide an immediate energy boost and fend off feelings of fatigue. * Hit the road, Jack. Another way to effectively fight fatigue is to get walking. A decades-old study conducted by a researcher at California State University, Long Beach, found that walking briskly for 10 minutes provides people with more energy than eating a candy bar. Though the candy bar led to an initial energy boost, that boost died down within an hour, whereas the boost provided by a brisk walk increased energy levels for roughly two hours. Get up and walk around the office or take a brisk walk around the block or the parking lot of your office complex. You’ll come back to your desk refreshed and ready to resume your workday. Fatigue is no laughing matter for many men and women. But a few tried and tested fatiguefighting methods can increase your energy and productivity.

Earaches were a common occurrence for Jody ever since she started day care 2 years ago. The routine was usually the same: runny nose, a slight fever, then she’d get fussy for 1-2 days, then a full blown earache, which inevitably resulted in a visit to the doctor, and antibiotics. Twice, three times, four times, she was not being cured and Jody’s parents, like all parents, were concerned about the frequent antibiotics. When the sniffles started again, they brought Jody to see me. She started on the remedy Ferrum Phosphoricum; two days later the sniffles were gone. Jody never got to the fever stage, or the fussy stage or the earache stage. Jody has had the occasional runny nose but that was resolved with Ferrum Phos., but she has been earache free for two years now. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease, so two people with the same problem may require different remedies.

Do you have the right set makeup to benefit your game (wedges, hybrids, fairway woods, etc.)? These are questions that you’ll want to answer before going to work on your game. Also you may want to come by and check out one of our demo day’s. If you’re not sure what shaft or loft you need you can come down to Cornwall Golf and Country Club and get fitted.

Safety tips for brake service:

April 29 - MAy 3, 2015 Tickets available @ Scotiabank or the Colts Office (Civic Complex)

• Invest in a top-quality brake pads. • If any rotors are marginal for continued service after refinishing (too thin or very close to the minimum thickness specification), have them replaced. An ASE-certified technician can compare the specification dimension and your rotors’ actual thickness for you on request. If you own an older vehicle equipped with original equipment (OE) rotors, be prepared to replace them at this time. • Have the brake calipers inspected to ensure that any moving parts, such as slides

and bleeder screws, haven’t corroded and frozen up. • Don’t always jump at the lowest quoted price for your brake job. A low price quote can mean that you’re not getting the complete brake system serviced.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Olympia Bowl bantam and junior girls teams have their eyes set on Canadian gold. Both squads are representing Southern Ontario at the Youth Bowling Council (YBC) national championship tournament at NEB’s Fun World in Oshawa from Saturday, May 2 to Monday, May 4. After taking the top spots in 2012 (in Newfoundland) and 2013 (in British Columbia), the bantam team earned silver in 2014 (in Manitoba). “They finished a distant second last year against a Quebec team - and we’ll be facing them again,” said coach Paul Legault. “They’re a strong team, and so are we.” The team: Sophia Dorie, Amy Wang, Savannah Ingola, and Brianna Lauzon. The game plan: roll like thunder, strike like lightning. “We’ll be up against some real competition, but I feel confident,” said Ingola. “It’s a fun sport, and I look forward to growing closer with my teammates at the tournament.” Both groups will be competing in 21 games

against the country’s best. Olympia Bowl donated lanes free of charge for their practices. The bowling alley hosted the YBC Provincial Finals for the bantam girls and boys teams on March 1. Coached by Melissa Russell, the junior girls team consists of Skye Tessier, Madison Tardif, Katelyn Lalonde , and Skylar Boismenu. “They’ve worked very hard this season and are ready to compete,” said Russell.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Watch for red flags

Vacuuming owner/operator shar’s private cleaning services

Shar’s Tip of the Week Nothing will extend the life of carpets(and for that matter, other furnishings)more than faithful vacuuming. Regular vacuuming removes the dirt and grit that grind

and wear away at carpet fibers as we walk over the area. Never use the carpet power head on wood or hardsurface floors. This could create scratches on softer hardwood, use a plain floor brush attachment to vacuum. Take your time and let the vacuum work for you. The power head needs time to loosen the dirt and the air flow needs time to suck it up.

Building inspector Mark Benerowski identifies common mistakes to watch out for. Roofers trying to work too fast: Ensure your roofing company will be providing you with an experienced installer and enough manpower to do the job properly (at least two or three workers). “It’s a seasonal type of business, so roofers can get very busy in the summers,” Mr. Benerowski says. “If a roofer is working too fast and he hasn’t set his pneumatic gun properly, that nail head could be driven too hard with too much pressure. You’ve cracked the shingle and now you have the potential for leakage.” Laying new shingles over old: Specify the full

removal of the old shingles – if you don’t, the roofers may lay new ones over the old ones, which can trap moisture and lead to premature deterioration of the new surface. Not removing old nails from the roof: Leaving old nails is trapping “a bunch of needles underneath the new shingles. When you strip a roof, it has to be fully stripped.” Poor ventilation: Be sure your roofing contractor will be addressing ventilation issues and is up-to-date on current ventilation techniques and products. “If you don’t have any ventilation at all, in the summer the attic gets very hot and you end up baking your shingles and they don’t last as long.”

My blind-date bicycle Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com As I explained in last week’s column, every story I write is as close to being accurate, impartial and complete as the accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. No court recorder’s account could be more reliable. Yes, I would swear upon a stack of Gideon Bibles that what I am about to describe did take place as described. We had booked a downtown hotel room for our two week stay in Havana, Cuba. Rental bikes in Montreal, Barcelona and Lisbon are as

common as Tim Horton’s outlets in Cornwall. To my surprise, it was virtually impossible to rent a bicycle in Havana. However, I did manage to arrange for one from a street acquaintance. I was desperate to do some urban riding. It was as if I had been set up with a blind date who turned out to have tattoos on every bit of exposed skin, was a chain smoker, had a five o’clock shadow and bore evidence of regular needle use on both arms. Not wanting to embarrass my blind date’s well-intentioned ‘older brother’ who had arranged this blind date, I swallowed my

disappointment and promised to return her 24 hours later. A test pilot does a thorough pre-flight walkaround before taking to the air. I just wanted to take off and get out of sight as quickly as possible. I soon found out that this bike could do nothing quickly, neither accelerate, nor stop. At a time in the long distant past, its brake pads (rear only) had been kept in place with scraps of wire no thicker than those found in a hearing aid. By ‘in place’ meant away from the rusty wheel rim. Unfortunately, the pads were in near constant contact with the rim. That limited

my speed to slower than an octogenarian on crutches. Alas, I soon learned that it was also free to pitch backward. I could knock myself out by tumbling backwards. I was lurching as if I were trying to break a feisty bronco. As I cruised along the Malecon, all my weight had to be on the pedals as I could not trust the seat. I was occasionally sprayed by waves that were trying to climb over the concrete break wall. If a foot slipped off a pedal, the crossbar would certainly inflict a painful and debilitating injury.

RIP former local radio journalist Marc Pilote. From an insider: “If you have a sleep test planned in the near future, don’t expect to do a whole lot of sleeping.” I would like take this opportunity to thank Marc Renaud and the team at Farm Boy of Cornwall for helping to make Kelly’s 50th “Surprise” party such a wonderful success. Assisting me with the menu, selection, preparation and packaging of foods was first rate. Their excellent service and guidance this past weekend was invaluable. Our guests all raved about the quality of the steaks and salads. For great steaks and fresh produce, Farm Boy in Cornwall is second to none. Thanks again Blair Fitzpatrick

A slow-pitch softball league for Cornwall and area age 55 & up is being planned. Open to both men and women, it is intended for enjoyment by players with any level of skill and teams will be structured so as to accommodate absenteeism. Cost per person approximates $45 for the full season. If interested in participating please call Gene at 613-703-7920.

Insiders say police are sniffing around what will be a big story. Word around the campfire is it will break soon enough. The art gallery struck out again on getting more money out of city hall...hardly a surprise. New fish and chip shop in Riverdale is set to open any day now. Brookdale Avenue now open (partially) from the traffic circle to Water Street. What a change to drive along the mouth of the old bridge and see...nothing. Musician Tracy Lalonde has made it to the regional semi-finals in CBC’s 2015 Searchlight competition. Fans can vote once per day from multiple phones, computers, tablets, and devices by following this link http://music.cbc. ca/#!/artists/Tracy-Lalonde.

Where have you been? Cornwall’s Wilhelm Schmidt snapped this photo of an osprey returning to its nest with some material to complete construction - under the ever-watchful eye of its partner and supervisor. The photo was shot at the Iroquois Lock.

Why are the length of city council meetings inversely proportional to the amount of playoff hockey on the tube? Speaking of hockey...Go Colts Go!

ElEmEntary, dEar Watson

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson were going camping. They pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes woke Watson up and said: “Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you see.” Watson replied: “I see millions and millions of stars.” Holmes said: “and what do you deduce from that?” Watson replied: “Well, if there are millions of stars, and if even a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are some planets like earth out there. And if there are a few planets like earth out there, there might also be life.” And Holmes said: “Watson, you idiot, it means that somebody stole our tent.”
