CORNWALL, Ontario - Lift-off has been cancelled for this year. Officials with the popular hot-air balloon festival that has found itself saddled with some significant financial obstacles, including a mountain debt, made the announcement official in a statement to local media. “The board was relying on raising funds to secure this year’s entertainment roster and to cover the remaining deficit from the 2013 LiftOff festival which suffered a large loss due primarily to adverse weather conditions,” read the statement. “The board of directors of the Cornwall Hot Air balloon Festival has voted to cancel Lift-Off 2015 citing an inability to garner major sponsors.” Terry Muir, chair of the event, said in an interview things began to pile up when news broke that city police may require cash up front to provide security this year. “After the thing about the police was out, most of the corporate sponsors” pulled out, he

said. Seaway News reported in February the Cornwall police service is still owed as much as $5,000 for providing security for Cornwall LiftOff last year and chief Dan Parkinson said his agency would think long and hard about providing security this year unless the bill is paid. Fundraisers will continue this year and it is hoped the event will return in 2016. “With less than three months until the 2015 festival date it was determined by the board that it would not have the time to raise the funds required and attract the talent that festival goers are anticipating,” continued the Lift-Off statement. “We are thankful for the evident support from the City of Cornwall which was a step in the right direction. We are hopeful the same or greater level of commitment will be in force when Lift-Off applies for funding for 2016.” Lift-off has been cancelled for this year. The board said municipal funds allocated for Lift-Off 2015 will not be requested from the City until an audit of the books is completed by an $67,050 in administrative costs that also includes of Cornwall. previous debt accumulated by the festival. outside accounting firm. Muir would not confirm the amount of debt Muir said the fundraising scheduled for this A draft Lift-Off budget document obtained Lift-Off has incurred, preferring instead to wait by Seaway News in February showed some year will help to mitigate the debt.

Many service outages and interruptions are caused by tree limbs which when affected by wind or ice fall into power lines causing damage to wires, short circuits and other problems. This creates potential danger for the homeowner and their property, danger that can be avoided by not planting tall-growing trees under or near electric wires, and by routine tree trimming. Cornwall Electric utilizes tree trimmers trained in proper tree trimming techniques around energized lines. The trees are cleared the distance required to create a sufficient air barrier around the wires to reduce branch contacts due to icing and wind. Generally the branches are trimmed back to the parent limb on the tree. This practice allows the pruning cuts to “heal” more rapidly, reducing the chances of insect and disease damage, and promotes a healthier growth of branches that are directed away from the power lines. 6153499

Chamber spring show will warm you up Executive Manager. “Once again we’ll have close to 100 exhibitors on hand with all of the latest in home and garden products and services and it promises to be an exciting event for people across the Cornwall region.” As is the Show’s tradition, there will be many demonstrations and each exhibit will have professionals on hand to answer questions and offer handy tips for your latest home improvement project. It’s a great way for local consumers to get a firsthand look at terrific new products and services to help them get the most out of their lawns

and gardens. “Of course, the ever popular City Central will be back,” continues Strasser. “Having representatives from various municipal departments gained an enthusiastic response from Show visitors who took advantage of the opportunity to chat with City staff and get a better idea about how the community serves them.” Two perennial favourites at the Spring Home and Leisure Show are the golf challenge and kids corner. The Chamber is pleased to announce that both of them will be back for this year’s event.

Along with the exhibits and fun activities are the prizes and once again, some lucky show visitor will walk away with a bonus — just for visiting. This year’s grand prize is a spectacular appliance package from Leon’s that includes a Whirlpool stove, fridge, dishwasher and microwave valued at $4,000.00! The Spring Home and Leisure Show kicks off at 4:00 p.m. on Friday April 10 and continues until Sunday, April 12. Cornwall girl back home after brain surgery days ago Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – A five-year-old Cornwall girl who underwent brain surgery just days ago is home, safe and sound. Mya Jackson had a massive brain tumour removed by doctors last week and despite some scares as a result of a 25-minute seizure following the surgery she has rebounded so quickly that her mother is astounded. “It’s a miracle for real,” said Tanya Lamarche. “The fact that she’s home in seven days showed a lot. “She will be home for at least a month. This is just the beginning of this horrible disease but she was a trooper and we made it through phase

one.” Mya suffers from a rare disease known as NF2 - an inherited ailment that leads to the formation of tumours in the brain and parts of the nervous system. She has other tumours near her ear, and on her spine, but the one attacking her brain was of special significance. Lamarche said if the tumours left within her daughter grow then doctors will have to perform more surgeries. But for now she’s just counting her blessings. Doctors we concerned that Mya would lose her senses of taste and smell, and there was a real danger she would undergo personality changes as well, because of the size and location of the tumour in her brain.

“The prayers on her Facebook page and the community were answered - she still so far has both,” said Lamarche. “She has a little personality change but I still have my crazy happy little Mya. “She’s moody from the steroids for sure…but her personality is different- it’s more mature I’d say. I can’t explain it, I just know as a mother. It may change again. She had a tumour bigger than a ping pong ball and the swelling takes weeks (to recede).” Social media posts of support from the community rolled in while Mya was recuperating from the surgery. “This (week) she goes for bandages off and follow up,” said Lamarche. “She still has other tumors so she will still be followed every six months.”

Agape receives $150k for new accessibility ramp CORNWALL, Ontario - The Agapè Centre has a happier future, thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Local MPP Jim McDonell joined Coun. Bernadette Clément in congratulating the Agapè Centre at an announcement ceremony Tuesday afternoon. “The Agapè Centre provides the neediest residents of Stormont-Dundas-South

Glengarry with essential services and support and they fulfill their mission with great dedication and care,” said McDonell. “Their focus on the centre’s accessibility is further testimony to their commitment to ensuring no local resident in need is left behind. “By providing Agapè with the necessary funding to invest in their accessibility, the Ontario Trillium Foundation is recognizing the prominent role played by Agapè in our community, bringing together donors and clients in the spirit of generosity and cohesion that

makes our region the best place to call home.” The Agapè Centre applied for a grant last year so that a new accessibility ramp could be installed at the store entrance. “This new ramp is part of our ‘Within These Walls’ building campaign which compliments the other four major infrastructure projects,” said Alyssa Blais, Executive Director of the Agapè Centre. “Our building renovations is intended to provide a safer and more accessible environment for our clients, volunteers, staff and customers.”

The other areas Agape plans to focus on includes new HVAC equipment, washroom renos, window replacements and interior finishes/flooring. The Agapè Centre is a not-for profit organization, supported by the community to ensure that no family goes hungry, cold or without any of the basic necessities of life. The Agapè Centre has been providing food, clothing and furniture to more than 1,000 people each month for the better part of the decade.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For six months, Lorraine Breau sewed her gratitude for the Heart and Stroke Foundation into every stitch of a handembroidered quilt. Then she gave it away as part of a raffle to raise funds for the volunteer-based health charity’s Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry, Prescott-Russell & Akwesasne (SDG-PR&A) chapter. The 61-year-old Lorneville Apartments resident had a heart attack at the age of 29. She underwent a triple bypass operation at the Ottawa Heart Institute in 1997, and then again in 2002. Three years ago, the quilter had a stent put in. “The Heart and Stroke Foundation has done so much for me, I just wanted to give back,” said Breau. According to 2011 stats, every seven minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke. With the help of her friends and fellow Lorneville tenants, Sharon Lavoie and Phil Howells, she sold 1,000 raffle tickets for the quilt at $2 apiece, or three for $5, which resulted in over $1,800 for the foundation. The trio gathered at the foundation’s Second Street office, across from the Cornwall Public Library, to announce Andrea Lazore as the lucky recipient of the heart-themed, queen-sized quilt, valued at $1,000.

Cornwall’s Lorraine Breau donated the quilt she’s pictured holding to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of SDG to help raise funds for research.Adam Brazeau Howells and Lavoie are also members of The Lorneville Riders, a seniors group competing in the Heart and Stroke Foundation Big Bike team event on Saturday, Apr. 25, at the Cornwall Legion, and Sunday, Apr. 26 at the RCAFA building. Teams of 29 pedal through the city on a humongous red bicycle and each commit to raising $50 or more to support heart disease and stroke research. “We challenge other apartment buildings or any other groups, to form a team and take the ride to help out the foundation - it doesn’t matter what your age is,” said Lavoie. One Lorneville Rider is 94. For more information, call the local office at (613) 938-8933 or visit www.heartandstroke.on.ca.

New Cornwall fire chief anounced by city hall CORNWALL, Ontario - There’s a new fire chief in Cornwall. The City of Cornwall announced Wednesday Pierre Voisine has been appointed the new fire chief, replacing retiring chief Richard McCullough. “We are excited by this solid addition to the City of Cornwall management team. Pierre brings more than 20 years of fire fighting and management experience and an established approach to fire service management,” said Geoff Clarke, Director, Human Resources. Voisine will start in the position on April 27, and there will be an overlapping period where McCullough will be available to assist in his orientation.

“I am excited at the prospect of working with the Cornwall Fire Department team,” said Voisine. “There are many opportunities and challenges ahead, and I look forward to navigating them in this wonderful city.” Voisine brings a broad range of experience to the position. TRAGIC LONG WEEKEND IN CORNWALL AREA

Man dies after Sixth Street fire Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

Murder in the east end, cops charge male Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Police now confirm a woman was allegedly killed by her son. Cornwall police said the death at a Carleton Street home has been deemed a murder and cops later confirmed the body of a 52-year-old woman was found inside with “visible trauma.” A 28-year-old man, Jonathan Michaud, the woman’s son, was later taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, said police Tuesday. He was held for a bail

hearing. Seaway News was told by a source that the woman was stabbed to death, but police are not confirming those details yet. “There would have been signs of a struggle,” said Cornwall police Const. Dan Cloutier. “But we cannot confirm the cause of death.” An autopsy has been ordered and the investigation into this matter continues by the Cornwall Community Police Service Criminal Investigation Division. The home is taped off and there were plenty of officers congregating at the property, said witnesses.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall police confirmed that a man has died as the result of an early morning fire on Friday, April 3, in the city’s west end. Sgt. Pat Paquette, of the Cornwall Community Police Service, said the unidentified man “passed away this morning.” “We’re still determining if this was accidental or of suspicious activity, so the investigation is ongoing - the fire marshal was out of town and is expected to arrive at the scene shortly,” said Paquette. Police were unable to release the man’s identity at the time. The Cornwall Fire Services Department said

the blaze started at 2:28 a.m. on the 0-100 block of Sixth Street West. Seven firefighters battled flames as clouds of smoke billowed from the burning upstairs apartment; other crews were already involved with a large gas leak on the 0-100 block of Albert Street. Six additional fire personnel were called to assist with suppression activities. In total five trucks and 19 firefighters were on scene. The man was removed from the two storey multiplex and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died. Officials noted that the fire was difficult to extinguish, leading to three firefighters being treated for minor injuries. The Ontario Fire Marshall’s office was dispatched to investigate the cause of the fire.

Thirty firefighters battled blaze at Williamstown clubhouse CORNWALL, Ontario - A fire that destroyed the clubhouse at Paul Rozon Park in Williamstown is being treated as suspicious by the South Glengarry Fire Service. According to their report, the building was severely damaged by the three-alarm fire on Friday, April 3, and will likely need to be taken down. Fire Chief Vic Leroux confirmed that the township-owned structure is covered by insurance. Thir ty firefighters from Williamstown, Lancaster, and Martintown were at the scene. No injuries have been reported. The OPP and the Office of the Fire Marshal

and Emergency Management have been notified of the incident. On the Williamstown Friends of the Park Facebook page, concerned residents used words like: sad, terrible, shocking, and awful. A post from the page admin said: “the storage room at the back is ok but the other part has been destroyed.” South Glengarry councillor Trevor Bougie commented: “It is very unfortunate that the clubhouse was destroyed but the Township and the community will work together to ensure it is rebuilt so that we can continue to enjoy our great park in South Glengarry!”

City confirms woman, 79, killed in apartment fire CORNWALL, Ontario - Officials have completed their investigation into a fire at an apartment unit at 15 Edward Street on Sunday. The fire claimed the life of a 79-year-old woman. Firefighters extinguished the fire and found the victim upon the initial search of the scene. She was removed from the apartment unit and treated by Firefighters before Paramedics arrived on scene. She was pro-

were also on hand to provide assistance. Sunday’s incident follows another fatal fire that occurred on Friday, in the 100 block of Sixth Street West. That fire claimed the life of a 57-year-old man. In both cases, the fires were caused by smoking articles. “Smoking and kitchen fires are the two leading causes of fires in Ontario,” said

Cornwall Fire Chief Richard McCullough. “I would urge all residents to be mindful when it comes to smoking and cooking in their residence.” The investigation of the fires was conducted by the Ontario Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM), Cornwall Fire Prevention Division and Cornwall Community Police Services.

Deslauriers to rock The Port Roxanne Delage

“We’re really looking forward to coming back. Every time we come to perform in Cornwall, it’s very special for me, it’s my hometown, I grew up there and there’s always something special, magical every time I come home.” The electrifying trio will be performing material from The Paul Deslauriers Band album and more. “Just rocking and rolling for the good folks in Cornwall.” Deslauriers and his band have been very busy touring their last release (self-titled) and recently returning from the Maple Blues Awards in Toronto where bass player, Greg Morency, was named top blues bass player for 2014. Deslauriers and his drummer, Sam Harrison, were also both nominated in their category. Deslauriers took home the award the year prior, along with acoustic act of the year. The band is currently nominated in six categories for the upcoming Lys Blues Awards for Quebec. They will be touring Ontario, Quebec and BC Paul Deslauriers. for the next couple of months, and will be in Omaha, Nebraska in June and other summer fes“We’re concentrating on breaking out intertivals to be announced. nationally with the band, in Europe and the US,” The next Paul Deslauriers Band CD is in the said Deslauriers. “We’re just spreading the gosworks, and will hopefully be released by the end pel in the old school way, just getting out there of next year. and playing and playing.”

The Paul Deslauriers Band will be rocking The Port, on Saturday, April 25. Tickets are now available, $20 in advance and $25 at the door. This is a licenced event. No opening act has been announced as of yet.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For a local musician, who left town years ago to pursue his career, coming back to Cornwall to play is always “magical,” and now even more so, with the announcement of his upcoming performance at The Port Theatre, later in April. It’s a coming-home, full-circle-thing,” said Paul Deslauriers, accomplished Rock/Blues guitarist, who is very pumped about bringing his act to the iconic building. “As a kid, who didn’t go to The Port to see movies, it’s been there for ever.” Long-time acquaintance, Larry Sylvain, now co-owner of The Port, had previously extended engagement invitations to Deslauriers, who is thrilled that he and his band were finally able to work out a mutually available time. “I haven’t been to The Port for years, so I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a flashback experience. I think, the last time, I may have taken my mother there to see something and we were the only two people in the place.” Deslauriers has not been, since major renovations to the beloved landmark have been completed, making it a premier venue for live music in the city. He and his band are surely in for a pleasant surprise.

RRCA extends tree order deadline deadline from March 31 to April 10. “We have taken a carpooling approach,” according to RRCA Forestry Specialist Normand Génier. He says there’s no better time than now to think about planting trees. “Tree planting subsidies are always available for landowners with greater than 1 hectare (2.5 acres) of land,” said Génier. “Subsidies can cover up to 80 per cent of the total cost of establishing a

new forest.” He explained that all seedlings are indigenous species often unavailable at local nurseries. This bulk purchase by the RRCA allows for acquiring these trees on a cost recovery basis. No long drives out of town, no excessive gas consumption, and a reduction in your own carbon footprint. Tree seedlings come in multiples of ten per species and must be ordered before the new deadline. In total, 28 species are available this year

and includes conifer trees such as White Spruce and White Pine, deciduous trees like Black Walnut and Shagbark Hickory, and even deciduous shrubs such as Nannyberry and Smooth Arrowood. All species are reasonably priced and sell from 66 cents to $1.67 each. Order your tree seedlings using the online form at www.rrca.on.ca, or by calling RRCA administrative assistant Josianne Sabourin at 613-9383611, extension 221.

Travel could simply be defined as ‘going from one place to another’. In recent times, several new reasons for travelling have evolved. ‘Medical tourism’, to obtain affordable and timely treatment not readily available in one’s own country, is increasing. ‘Porn tourism’, whereby perverts seek to satisfy their un-biblical appetites abroad, exists. An equally appalling reason for travelling to foreign lands could be represented by the phrase, “Folks, I’m out of here and off to join ISIS”. Let’s leave those last two reasons mouldering under some dank refuse pile and explore some of the motivations normal people have for travelling. The first that comes to mind is simply to get from where one is to some other place - to attend a loved one’s funeral, a friend’s wedding, to get a new job, to seek freedom from oppression or simply as an economic refuge from a Third World Country with numbing hardship. Places such as Bangladesh, Haiti and Somalia come to mind. These days, in our affluent society, escape is a common reason for travel. Some seek to escape winter’s ice, snow and darkness. Others seek to escape the demands of an exhausting job, the

challenge of raising teen-age offspring or just the boredom that comes with the lack of stimulation of living in a seventh-floor, one-bedroom apartment. Then there are the noble reasons for travel: volunteering for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Doctors Without Borders or one that is erecting a school or community centre in a destitute community. Some people travel to become immersed in a foreign language and culture. Book learning can take us to a limited level, but being in the ‘sink or swim’ situation of making one’s needs understood, and comprehending what is being said, can go a long way toward making one fluent in a second language. Some photographers and writers find being transported to a completely different physical environment can get the creative juices running, overcome writer’s block and stretch the ability to innovate. There is a limit to how often a photographer is willing to change the arrangement or lighting on a bowl of flowers or fruit for tabletop photography. Photographing a black Lab or a black cat eventually loses its appeal. It’s hard to take a boring photograph of the Grand Canyon or the Taj Mahal, but some people manage to do

Fluoride presents too many risks to workers - and costs us too much

Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Sometimes you get it wrong…and I got it wrong. It was nearly two years ago that I penned a column suggesting city council made the right decision when it comes to maintaining the fluoridation of our water supply. But after some sober second thought, and a little investigating, I’ve changed my mind. It’s got little to do with the conspiracy theorists and left-wingers who are ready to suggest death looms behind every drop of fluoridated water. It doesn’t. Instead, I think the issue here in Fun City boils down to wasting taxpayer money and the safety of the guys that keep our drinking water flowing. It costs about $50,000 a year to fluoridate our drinking water. It might not seem like much when considered within a city budget of $160 million, but for the rest of us who work for a living, 50k is indeed a lot of money. And where is much of that money going? Down the drain, pun fully intended. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see most of our drinking water ends up going right back into the St. Lawrence River instead of the mouths of Cornwallites. Think about it, more water is used in Cornwall for washing clothes, dishes, flushing toilets, keeping lawns green and bathing than simple drinking or even cooking. So what are we spending the money on? People are still getting fluoride from sources like tooth pastes and mouth washes. Naysayers

suggest fluoridated tap water helps dental health among people who don’t take care of themselves by brushing and flossing regularly. In the U.S., studies have shown that sodas, juices, sports drinks, beers, and many other processed foods, including infant foods, now have elevated fluoride levels – which leads me to think we’re getting the fluoride anyway, like it or not. Which brings me to my next point. If we’re already being exposed to fluoride, and most of the fluoridated water created in Cornwall is simply getting a one-way trip to the sewers instead of first passing through human bodies, then perhaps the guys who work at the water filtration plant are being put through undue risks. Cornwall’s water isn’t treated by simply adding fluoride to the system. Instead highly corrosive and potentially dangerous hydrofluorosilicic acid is added to create fluoride in our water. How bad is that stuff? “There are significant health and safety risks associated with handling this product,” said environmental services manager Morris McCormick in a report to city council last fall. “Hydrofluorosilicic acid vapours react with moisture in the air to produce a very corrosive environment that can cause severe skin and eye burns. Contact with liquid hydrofluorosilicic acid can also cause severe burns.” I’m told holes in the ground (not a lot, but some) at the filtration plant, where hydrofluorosilicic acid has dripped and eaten away at anything it touches, can be found. If we were getting more bang for our fluoride buck I would argue the practice should be

maintained and the guys at the filtration plant would have to live with the reality. But we aren’t. Most of the fluoride is not being consumed…which creates an undue risk for water filtration plant staff. Of course no one is drinking fluoridated tap water in Cornwall right now. Concerns about worker safety suspended the practice about a year ago. Since then city council has booted the issue around like another in a long line of political footballs. Critics have argued before council that the risks of using chemicals to treat the water present too many risks to workers, while also creating a danger for those who consume it. But medical professionals have long suggested the benefits of water fluoridation, especially in terms of dental care, far outweigh other concerns. The doctors may well have a point about how important dental care is to the socioeconomic stability of a community…but that would be in a perfect world where most of the fluoride in the

municipal water supply was actually being consumed by residents. Councillors are expected to wade into the water issue again, in large part because there are so many new faces around the table at city hall. So Paul Roumeliotis, the top doctor in the region, will be addressing council on the subject (again). So will critics, if council is fair about hearing (again) from all parties. All of this will (hopefully) bring the issue to a head, once and for all. I haven’t heard about a run on dentist appointments in the last year, which leads me to think that keeping the fluoride out of our water supply hasn’t resulted in an avalanche of cavities and dental trauma. In the meantime we could be saving a bunch of money that is being wasted…and also put at ease the concerns of staffers at the water filtration plant that work alongside poison we probably don’t need.

to Cuba, want to get there before the Americans dominate many tourist spots. Having been to Cuba a couple of times, I can vouch that many years of isolation has had a devastating effect on Cubans. Many Cubans are proud and will never admit this openly. As you venture into small towns and cities away from the hustle and bustle of tourist resorts you begin to see the real Cuba and poverty. In many areas, infrastructure is falling apart. You will see old American cars which have been restored to working conditions. Obama has done the right thing. The U.S.

policy towards Cuba has been a dismal failure. The political situation in Cuba has been gradually improving since Fidel Castro, 89, handed over power to his brother. When you visit Cuba now, you are bound to see many privately owned restaurants and eating places. Many new enterprises are springing up in Havana and elsewhere. Cuba has survived and continued to grow and exist even after the Soviet Union collapsed. Tourism will soon experience a big boom in Cuba. When prosperity returns to Cuba, the ordinary people will benefit.

Opinion Column – Sultan Jessa Thousands of Canadians, including many from the Cornwall area, are flocking to Cuba in search of warm weather, sandy beaches and reasonable vacation. Many Canadians are eager to enjoy the friendliness and accommodating people before Americans turn the small communist island in their playground. Numerous steps have already been taken to normalize relations between the two countries. Many had thought this would never happen. United States President Barack Obama took the

initiative of restoring ties with this tiny nation. Tourism is bound to foster economic boom for Cuba. Many are confident ordinary Cubans will greatly benefit from America lifting the 50-yearold embargo. New hotels and tourist resorts will popup up everywhere to accommodate hordes of Americans who will be heading there for vacations. Until now, the unilateral sanctions have hurt ordinary Cubans more than the country. A new tourism boom will provide jobs and economic opportunities for thousands. Many Canadians, who have previously not ventured

around Cornwall” was published in 1976 by local publisher Vesta Publications. Retired educator Dave Hill has one of the few copies of “Seaway Valley Cartoons” still around. It is a stroll down memory lane. Back in the 1990s the managing editor of the day brought back a local cartoon. When No. 1 took a swipe at the mayor, a Pitt Street merchant, who was chummy with the mayor and well-known for trying to dictate editorial policy to the newsroom, threatened to organize an advertising boycott of the paper unless the cartoon feature was dropped. It was dropped. SPORTS STUFF Earl McBean offers this neat sports trivia gem - The son of this famous British rock star plays in the Western (Junior) Hockey League. He will play for Great Britain in the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation championship. ... Operating an Ontario Hockey League team is a much bigger business than it was when the Royals were playing out of the LumDome with three or four full-time employees. The departure of the Belleville Bulls to Hamilton will put 16 full-time and 50 parttime Bulls’ employees out of work. Even the guy who did the cable television games for $7,000 a season is out of work. Charities will take a hit too. The Bulls contributed around $100,000 a year to charitable causes. ... Keep an eye on the Peterborough Petes. They could be the next OHL franchise to be sold and moved. ... If Belleville gets another OHL franchise, the team can be called the Bulls. The nickname was left with the city by the new owner. The Hamilton franchise will be called the Bulldogs. The Royals handle left town with Willie and is now the property of the Sarnia Sting.

IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Each Saturday from 1946 to 1963 the Standard-Freeholder published a “Jest around Cornwall” cartoon composed by city resident Bob Eadie, who said his wife, Betty, sold him on the idea of the “Jest around Cornwall”. The cartoons had a rich local favourite and became one of the best-read features in the daily newspaper. They covered a wide range of issues that included the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project, the housing shortage, the high cost of rent and city council. The talented cartoonist was cut loose in a cut-cutting exercise by the Thomson Newspaper folks after they added the S-F to the company’s rapidly expanding newspaper empire. For years living in and around Cornwall offered up two Good Friday traditions that had nothing in common. One filled the pews of local churches with worshippers. The other filled the bars in Massena with drinkers, a tradition that went back to the 1930s. This, of course, was before Ontario allowed bars to open on Good Friday. When the province shelved the Good Friday ban, one of the biggest one-day windfalls for several taverns and road houses just across the bridge came to an end. How big was the holy day for the Massena beer slingers? It was a microscopic version of Spring Break in Daytona, sans the beach and bikinis. By 3 o’clock in the afternoon Sprague’s, a longtime favourite road house on old Route 37 just west of Rooseveltown, had an overflow crowd that packed the large gravel parking lot that created a tailgate party atmosphere. Getting into the joint to buy a beer or attend the Depression era washroom, was a challenge. One year an enterprising Cornwallite went down the road to a store, purchased several dozen six packs and was back in the parking lot selling beer from his trunk for a buck each. By late afternoon the mob moved (invaded) into Massena and packed places like the Willow Grove (later Coach’s Corner), Charlie’s Tavern, Tex Montana’s Diamond Horse Shoe, Nadeau’s and Woodlawn’s. In later years, Trombino’s with its cheap beer and pizza became a favourite Good Friday destination. It was one of the biggest single-day toll grabs for the bridge authority. Even the Massena Police Department got in on the financial windfall. Rowdy Canadians were

rounded up and hauled to the dingy station in the basement of the ancient Town Hall. In most cases, the transgressors were out on bail (nobody can recall getting their bail money back) soon after arriving. With Cornwall and area bars open on Good Friday, and the crack down on drinking and driving on both sides of the border, not to mention monitoring at the CBSA port, the Good Friday exodus to Massena has been reduced to a trickle. The Good Friday financial tap has been turned off. These days local watering holes reap the financial harvest. TRIVIA ANSWER Gerald Parisien was elected mayor in 1974 after two previous unsuccessful bids for the job. He defeated Douglas Warner and Aurele Clement who had served on the previous Ed Lumley council. Parisien retired after three terms. TRIVIA This made for television (CBS) movie was shot at Upper Canada Village in 1972. Jane Wyatt and Buddy Ebsen starred in the two-hour movie. HERE AND THERE Brockville Police Service managed to reduce its budget in 2014 and cut crime, rubbing against the conventional wisdom that a police service has to spend more to keep the lid on crime. It finished 2014 with a $200,000 surplus. And the service thinks it can make another cut into the 2015 budget. Another unique feature is that Brockville cops still walk the beat. ... Meanwhile, the Waterloo Regional Police Service finished 2014 with a whopping $3.4 million surplus. ... In Sarnia, the firefighters union is feeling some heat for providing financial help to some municipal candidates in the 2014 election. Said one taxpayer in a letter to the Sarnia Observer, “The moment the money was

Your front door serves both as protection against the outside and insulation for your home. Of course, you also want a door that you like the look of and that goes well with the rest of your home. Here are a few tips to help you make the right choice. The most popular material for front doors is steel. Easy to maintain and durable, it also gives excellent value for money. In addition, it’s ideal for all architectural styles. You like the look of wood? While a wooden door can add curb appeal to your property, it’s going to be less effective as far as insulation is concerned. If you go ahead with wood, be sure to use the latest in weather stripping, which is more efficient than it used to be. Many wooden doors have also been designed to prevent warping with time. Are you looking for a durable material that is resistant to shocks, cracking and warping? Fiberglass will meet all these expectations. This type of door is almost indestructible and doesn’t require maintenance, but it is more expensive than steel. Stores now also stock PVC doors with excellent energy efficiency. They are resistant to

Chrome, brass, gilt, and copper are the most popular in shiny, matt, or brushed versions; just keep in mind that finger prints aren’t as visible on a matte finish. the difference? It’s elementary, my dear Wats on — weigh them. Good quality faucets are significantly heavier. Another sought-after sink element is no-drip taps and spouts. Traditional valve faucets are being gradually replaced by models with cartridges or ceramic discs. This technology is very efficient, especially if your water is hard. On the other hand, they are not recommended if your water supply comes from an artesian well, as just one grain of sand could jam the mechanism.

The world of faucets has evolved so much in recent years that it’s easy to feel lost without a few guidelines. Indeed, manufacturers now offer products in a huge range of shapes, finishes, and styles. While some models have truly eye-catching designs, faucets are primarily utilitarian. In the kitchen, high faucets facilitate rinsing pots and cleaning food. The simpler their shape, the easier they are to clean. However, you should always ensure that they fit into your decor.

Is winter taking its toll on your garage floor? Is it all salt and grime when you open the door? In cold climates lots of salt and road grime accumulate under your car. Due to whatever else might be in you garage, and temperatures that might be below freezing, hosing down the floor is not always an easy option for quick cleanups. Over time the mess gets worse, and surface gunk starts becoming permanent stains. Salt left for long periods is bad for concrete, too. So what’s a homeowner to do? Sealing goes a long

way toward keeping concrete in good shape. It makes cleanups easier, too. Painting a garage floor helps, but has its down side -- like peeling and lifting where tires sit overnight. A better solution is specific concrete sealers. They’re available at your local hardware store. General-purpose water sealants are OK, too, but will have to be applied more often to remain effective. Either way, a good cleaning first and proper preparation (per directions) are a must.

In short, they are the perfect way to ensure your backyard experience is ideal in every outdoor season for many years to come. They can be attached to homes to cover decks and patios or built as stand-alone covers in any corner of the yard. If you are looking for more than just a patio or deck cover, Natural Light Patio Covers has five different ways to fully enclose the area. From screened rooms to sliding Lumon glass walls that preserve your view, they can create a three season room that will allow you to extend your outdoor season into the spring and fall months. here’s nowhere anyone would rather be on a beautiful summer day than on the backyard deck, in a comfortable chair, sipping a cool drink. And yet, this perfect scenario can so easily be spoiled if the sun is too hot and too direct. There are dozens of solutions to block the sun, but nothing is as effective or rewarding as a Natural Light Patio Cover. With almost magical qualities, the covers block all U.V. rays and 75 per cent of infrared rays (which create heat). Now you can protect your family and furniture from the elements, yet stay comfortably cool. And when the weather shifts, you’re still protected from the wind and rain. Natural Light Patio Covers use Acrylite panels to filter out heat and U.V. while letting the natural light shine in, to create the perfect patio atmosphere. There isn’t a giant solid awning casting a shadow not only on the deck but on the room behind the adjacent windows. There isn’t a large umbrella that has to be folded down every time the wind picks up. And there isn’t a retractable sunshade that has to be cranked into position every time someone wants to sit outside. Natural Light Patio Covers are permanent structures, engineered specifically for the Ontario climate to take the wind and snow without

If you’re having problems getting into tight spaces because of your brush handle, just cut the handle off. Then, you’ll be able to get into those tight spaces. When you want to take a break in the middle of your paint job, you don’t have to stop to clean your brush every time. Just store it in a plastic bag, make sure it’s sealed and

put it in the refrigerator. It will keep it fresh until you can get back to it. Finally, one last tip: use an ordinary cotton swab. Dip it in paint and use it to touch up those tiny, hard-to-reach spaces. When you’re done, throw it away—it’s that easy.

Deck Maintenance

How to Repair Cracks in Your Asphalt Driveway

In many parts of the country weather has changed. Thus, family activities have moved indoors. This means you’ll never have the deck more available for deck maintenance than now. But if you’re waist deep in snow, you might have to wait a bit. But if it’s just chilly and grey, that’s an ideal time. Perform a full inspection of all surfaces -- looking for boards that need repair or replacement. If one is damaged or has cupped or checked, flip it over or exchange it with a better one from another location. Once things are all tightened, secured and shipshape, test to see if it is time to reseal. Then consider those special touches you’ve wanted -- like benches and planters. The weather might not be the best, but you won’t have kids, dogs or relatives to contend with either. So hit the deck.

A small crack in your asphalt driveway is how it starts. Then water seeps in below the base, which leads to even more cracking and bigger and wider gaps and, eventually, potholes. Before long, really big potholes appear. To keep cracks in check, and to stop potholes before they start, apply an asphalt sealer every 3 to 4 years. Also known as emulsified asphalt, these sealers are available in 5-gallon ready-to-pour buckets. While it’s great for patching and filling small cracks, larger cracks should first be filled with a heavier and thicker asphalt caulking compound. Still wider cracks -- those more than a half an inch -should be patched and filled with a paste made of

sand and emulsified asphalt sealer. And, those really big potholes and larger repairs, like missing chunks and broken edges, should be made using an asphalt cold-patch material. If you catch problems early or keep up with them once you’ve made big repairs, you’ll have a driveway that’s worthy of a man without cares.

without doing damage to the surface it was stuck to? Here’s an easy way to get it off: Use a hairdryer! Hold the hairdryer just three or four inches away from the tape. The heat will soften the adhesive as you gently pull it off the wall. This technique will work on almost any kind of tape or label and remove it from wallpaper, paint, wood finishes or even furniture.

Kungalv beats Seaway Valley in friendly at Benson Centre Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - For the ninth year, two styles of hockey clashed in Cornwall. The Seaway Valley minor bantam AA Rapids is hosting a group of 80 players and family members from Kungalv, Sweden, between Wednesday (April 1) to Monday (April 6). The young athletes faced off in a series of three matches at the Benson Centre. Two of them were mixed teams, but one game pitted Swedes against Canucks. The crushing 8-0 defeat suffered by the Rapids was still considered a win, according to Mark Desnoyers, president of Seaway Valley Minor Hockey Association. “The kids look forward to this all year long,” said Desnoyers. “The group we have coming up next year in minor bantam are already excited.” All players ranged from 13 to 14 years old.

Team captain Jacob Levin marveled at the Benson Centre and its three NHL-sized ice pads. “My favourite part (about this experience) is being right here and playing the game,” said Levin. Desnoyers added: “For a place that has one rink and roughly 36,000 people, these kids can really play. I don’t know how they do it, they’ve got the right system going.” Coach Marcus Andersson and Lars-Ove Haraldsson, tour organizer for the Swedish group, said they’re already planning for 2016. After Saturday’s match, the players were taken to the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata to watch the Ottawa Senators against the Washington Capitals. On Sunday, the young players, their families, and hosts spent their last day together off-ice for Easter. The Swedish group left for home on Monday morning.

ExSELLENCE TEAM REALTY IS LOOkING fOR OUR NExT TEAM MEMbER!

Is it time to replace your roof? (NC)-With winter behind us, there’s a sense of excitement in the air as we head into spring. But along with the longer days of sunshine come April showers. For some, the ‘pitter patter’ of rain is just another simple sign of the season. But for others, it can be a complete nightmare, especially when ‘pitter patter’ turns to ‘plunk plunk’— the sound of rain leaking through the roof of your home. If this sounds familiar, it’s time to fix or replace that leaky roof. Eventually, there comes a time when every home’s roof must be replaced. Indications of roof age or damage are not always obvious, so don’t hesitate to ask a qualified professional to do a thorough investigation of your roof. The health of your roof depends on many factors: its age, maintenance done during the life of your roof and damage caused by external weather conditions. If you’re uncertain if your roof needs repair or replacement, here are a few warning signals: Ice damming areas: During fall and winter, ice dams can occur on the lower edges of the roof along the eaves. When snow melts and runs down the roof, it refreezes at the eaves resulting in an ice dam. This may cause a back up of water, which can move under the shingles and into the attic. Examine the areas of your roof where snow often builds up and inspect the shingles and sheathing. Worn out flashing: Flashing is sheet metal that’s used to weather-proof a roof at its angles and joints. If a roof’s flashing is worn out or not properly installed, it can allow for

ongoing leakage that may damage the roof structure and cause rotting, staining or structural damage. That’s why damaged or improperly installed flashing must be replaced or repaired properly by a trained professional. When you take the time to maintain your roof you’ll have peace of mind and will stay dry no matter what the season brings.

Glass Shower Doors Sharon Fortier

owner/operator shar’s private cleaning services

Shar’s Tip of the Week Glass doors are a convenient additon but can quickly cloud up with soap scum. For some heavy-duty cleaning, try: Shaving cream: Squirt on the foam and wipe clean; the foam will leave a light film that keeps the doors from fogging and makes it harder for scum to stick. White vinegar: Keep a spray bottle in the shower so you can make washing down the surfaces part of your post-shower routine. Baking soda: Make a solution of 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup baking soda. Then scrub with a sponge. A small amount of vegetable oil poured onto a sponge or paper towel and applied to the doors after cleaning will prevent a buildup reoccouring.

Pet Tip of the Week: Water levels are rising in rivers and streams. Watch your pets carefully around bodies of water. You should always supervise your pet in and around a pool, pond or other body of water. If your dog falls into a pool, he can panic or get trapped and drown before help arrives. Drinking lake, pool or stagnant water can give your pet digestive problems, so it’s best to bring along a supply of fresh water when going for a stroll with your pet. A tiger was walking through the jungle one day and saw two men relaxing under a tree. One was reading a newspaper, and the other was working feverishly on a manual typewriter. The tiger leapt on the man with the newspaper, and ate him up. The tiger did not bother the other man at all. That’s because any predator knows that readers digest, but writers cramp.
