Lac Manitoba headed for the scrap heap Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – One down (make that up), one to go. The Lac Manitoba was removed from its would-be watery tomb in the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall Saturday and was atop a barge at the city harbour. This leaves the LCM 131, a smaller tugboat, still capsized in the river. Both ships sank more than a month ago positioning a barge on the river. “On Friday and Saturday (last week) a light sheen oil was detected, with its origin coming from the final volume of water draining from

the Lac Manitoba after being lifted from the water.,” McKeil Marine, the owners of the tug, said in a statement Saturday. “The materials released quickly dissipated in the strong current.” A Seaway inspection has been scheduled for early this week. Following Seaway clearance, the barge will be assisted away from the dock and towed to Hamilton where the tug Lac Manitoba will be scrapped. The river in the vicinity of the Seaway International Bridge is still closed to all vessel traffic. The LCM 131 is expected to be salvaged this week. Canadian Coast Guard officials have indicated the vessel is nearly empty of fuel.

Coroner investigating sudden death of man in his 60s CORNWALL, Ontario – The local coroner’s office is investigating a sudden death at an apartment complex in east-end Cornwall. Cornwall police are assisting, but the death has not been ruled criminal yet, said Sgt. Robin McIntosh. “Any type of sudden death is a coroner’s

case,” said McIntosh, adding police could assume control of the investigation in the event the coroner deems it criminal. Police were at the scene of the apartment complex, located in the area of Victoria Avenue and First Street. The deceased individual, a male, is believed to be in his 60s, McIntosh said. McIntosh said police got a call to attend the apartment building Monday afternoon. Officers, including forensics experts, could

The building houses not only residential dwellings but private businesses as well. Homeopathy and CHroniC EaraCHE

Earaches were a common occurrence for Jody ever since she started day care 2 years ago. The routine was usually the same: runny nose, a slight fever, then she’d get fussy for 1-2 days, then a full blown earache, which inevitably resulted in a visit to the doctor, and antibiotics. Twice, three times, four times, she was not being cured and Jody’s parents, like all parents, were concerned about the frequent antibiotics. When the sniffles started again, they brought Jody to see me. She started on the remedy Ferrum Phosphoricum; two days later the sniffles were gone. Jody never got to the fever stage, or the fussy stage or the earache stage. Jody has had the occasional runny nose but that was resolved with Ferrum Phos., but she has been earache free for two years now. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease, so two people with the same problem may require different remedies.

Treat your tastebuds to the Local Food Challenge Other organizers include Transition Cornwall +, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, the Eastern Ontario Agri-food Network, Growing Up Organic, Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie, Seaway Valley Community Health Centre, and Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects. “We already have a number of great activities and prizes lined up for the week” said Sarah Mulvihill, Local Food Challenge communications assistant. “So make sure to register and follow us on social media for your chance to win.” There is no cost for business or community residents to join the Local Food Challenge, however online registration is required at www.sdgprlocalfoodchallenge.com.

Once registered, participants are provided with a tracking sheet to log their daily consumption of local food during the ten day period, easy access to the Prescott & Russell, Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Local Food Map, and updates with tips and tricks for enjoying the season’s harvest. Local businesses and community organizations who specialize in local food within the region are also invited to register with the challenge as a way to advertise their business, products, and special events. Interested parties will have access to promotional tools, social media channels, and event resources leading up to the 10 day event. The Challenge will not entirely focus on buying SDG & PR food products, but will also aim to

encourage gardening, healthy food preparation, and basic food preservation skills. “Enjoying local food is about more than just meeting your local farmer or chef,” said Alain D’Aoust, regional co-ordinator for Growing Up Organic. “It’s about learning how to grow, harvest, and prepare nutritious meals for the whole family to enjoy.” A series of events and toolkits have been scheduled to help novice gardeners and cooks feel more comfortable with local foods and to try new things. The full calendar of events and resource list are available on the Local Food Challenge website and social media pages.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Registration is open for the first ever SDG & PR Local Food Challenge, a 10-day event which challenges residents of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott, Russell, and Cornwall to enjoy as much local food as they can. Participants are also being encouraged to share their experiences across social media using #eatSDGPR. The event runs from Aug. 14 to 23. “This event is meant to be a fun yet competitive way for residents to explore their local food community and all that it has to offer,” said Kat Rendek, co-ordinator for All Things Food, one of the agencies spearheading the event.

New sex abuse support program will make house calls throughout SD and G Todd Lihou

todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Dozens of sexual abuse victims in SD and G are expected to benefit from a new outreach program created by Sexual Abuse Support Services in Cornwall. SASS, as it’s known, has received an unspecified grant from the United Way of SD and G to create an outreach program that will see a caseworker visit clients of the sex abuse prevention agency right in their home community throughout the counties. Angela Vinet, executive director of SASS, was “ecstatic” when she received word of funding for

the new program. “It’s wonderful. We’ve always had the demand to go out there, but we never had the manpower to do it,” she said. Karina Boucher has been hired by SASS for the duration of the one-year program to act as an outreach worker/counsellor. Lori Greer, executive director of the United Way, said in an interview it’s the first time since she took over in her role that a new agency has been brought aboard. “We were really pleased to fund this program because of the outreach going out to women in SD and G who can’t access the service otherwise,”

she said. Those looking to book an appointment with Boucher can phone SASS at 613-932-1755, ext. 27. She will begin circulating in the United Counties next week, dropping off business cards and posters to let residents know about the new program which is geared towards women 16 and up who have been a victim of abuse, or witnessed an attack.

CREATURE CAMP

Civil war re-enactors heading to Lost Villages this weekend CORNWALL, Ontario - The American Civil War is over, but a local historical society wants to today mark the sacrifices men made in battle. The Lost Villages Historical Society is hosting the ‘Grays and Blues of Montreal’ Aug. 8 at its South Stormont museum, to mark the contribution Canadians made to the war that saw union soldiers and secessionists wage war on each other. The event will serve as a rallying cry for fundraising efforts that are taking place to erect a $40,000 monument to memorialize the more than 50,000 Canadian (British North American) veterans who volunteered and fought in the

American Civil War. The monument will be the first of its kind in Canada. “This day is really (illustrating) the connect between Canada and the U.S. because of these volunteers,” said Lost Villages president Jim Brownell. The so-called ‘Living History Day’ on Aug. 8 will feature a visit from the family of William Ellis, a veteran of the civil war who made a home in Moulinette - one of the lost villages that was flooded for the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Ellis’ family will be in attendance at 1 p.m. for a recognition ceremony. A barbecue will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Brownell said the historical society has

collected about $10,000 in pledges so far towards its $40,000 goal. A model of the monument will be on display during the day’s events. The monument will be erected within Ault Park, on County Road 2, which also includes the Lost Villages Museum. Brownell said the monument will face the highway and become a focal point of the property. The proposed 14-foot black granite obelisk will be paired with eight-foot black granite side stones and a small paved pedestrian walkway. The historical society has entered into an agreement with the Grays and Blues of Montréal (GBM) - a mid-19th century living history reenactment association, to erect the

monument. The monument should be completed in time for the 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation, which takes place July 1, 2017. Over the bloody four-year American Civil War more than 50,000 volunteers from Ontario, Québec and the Maritimes travelled to various northern or southern U.S. cities, to enlist on either side of the battle lines. By the end of the war more than 620,000 on both sides, including thousands of Canadians, were killed. Some 34 Canadians on the federal side were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Today no war monument exists to commemorate and remember the Canadian volunteers.

POOL PARTY:

Donation to Lancaster family makes a world of difference for little Isabella Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - In a matter of just a few days Isabella Carriere has gone from life in a wheelchair, to floating on what will probably feel like a cloud. The 13-year-old Lancaster girl is grappling with metachromatic leukodystrophy - a mouthful of a degenerative disease that attacks the brain’s ability to communicate with nerves. This communication breakdown often leads to a host of issues for patients, including loss of function, paralysis, blindness and seizures among others. Isabella’s case has kept her confined to a wheelchair, and has led to complications like scoliosis, separated hips and shoulders that are beginning to separate. What it hasn’t dampened is her spirit, and that of her family. “Isabella was given a poor prognosis,” said her mother Melissa, adding at birth her daughter appeared normal until the diagnosis at 20 months of age. “At the time, of course, we were devastated.” Isabella eventually lost the ability to sit, crawl and eat orally. Her spirit, though, endured and has helped the family grow. “Now she’s 13, and although her health is

complicated, for the most part it is stable,” said Melissa. “It’s not a journey we planned on experiencing. “But she has made us see life in a different light. We’re just thankful for every day we have with her. There are a lot of blessings we’ve enjoyed.” A rather large blessing took place recently. A therapeutic pool was installed last week at the family’s home. Thanks to a partnership between Rachel’s Kids in Cornwall and Cobra Pools and Spas in Perth, the pool (complete with heated water and jets) has been donated and will allow Isabella to enjoy some relaxation away from her wheelchair. “It’s just the perfect therapy for her,” said Melissa. “It will relax her...and it’s fun.” For the whole family. Melissa and her husband Stephane are looking forward to seeing their other daughter Mya, 11, splashing around too. “It’s difficult for a sibling in the shadows, so I told her it’s just as much for her,” said Melissa. “Bill Brady from Cobra Pools organized the In back, from left at the grand unveiling are Bill Brady, George Baird, Tim Quinn, whole project, donated two days of his time Stephane Carriere, Matthew Brady. New look for Agape Centre’s food truck CORNWALL, Ontario - There’s a new way for businesses to help the Agapè Centre bring fresh food to people in need. The local food bank, soup kitchen and thrift store’s pick-up and delivery truck was refinished with a large photo of fresh veggies and the charity’s logo on one side, and a display of the centre’s resale store on the other side. The new look also features some prime space for corporate sponsorships. “Since our truck travels around the city on a daily basis, it’s a moving billboard. It made sense to spruce it up in a way that shares our mission and vision, with space to generate some funding to support services through advertising,” said Johanne Gauthier, the Agapè Centre’s operations manager. “Now the truck showcases what we are all about: good, fresh food driven by community support,” she said. Between repairs, maintenance, fuel and insurance, it costs more than $12,000 to keep the vehicle on the road for a year. So the seven advertising spots on the truck will cover the annual operating costs, and then some. The truck use has significantly changed

over the past year. “Before, it was mostly used to pick up donations for the thrift store. But now it is being used primarily for picking up fresh food for the food bank, soup kitchen, and some of our food programs such as TLC (Teach and Learn with your Child at the Early Years Centre) and the Curious Chefs program,” said Gauthier. So far, the local non-profit has four businesses on board: Bourgon Construction, Olymel, Cornwall Truck Maintenance, and Marleau Mechanical. “Bourgon Construction is pleased to be involved in the restoration and renovation of the Agapè Centre’s building and are proud to support the excellent work they do for the community,” said the construction company’s President and Project Manager, Chris Markell. The Agapè Centre says it will provide great care to ensure that the advertising spaces are not sold to two competing businesses. “We’re the biggest food manufacturer in town, so it makes sense to support the food bank,” said Jay Willyard, plant manager of Olymel. Gerry ten Brink has been driving the Agapè Centre’s truck for eight years, and enjoys the

opportunity to get out into the community and meet the people Agapè works with. “The truck brings visibility and awareness to what we’re doing, so the sponsorships are a great way to show the community involvement of the businesses in the area,” he said. Jason Pascheck, owner of Cornwall Truck Maintenance, explained that his company sets aside funds in the budget to support charities. “Our father believed in giving back to the community and started donating to Agape years ago, and it has been a part of our business’ core belief. We’ve also been helping with Agape’s truck maintenance for years,” he said There are only three spaces left, so any company hoping to see its logo traveling around the city every weekday, will have to act fast. The agreements are renewable on an annual basis. “By buying an ad space on the vehicle, sponsors are directly helping us bring fresh food to local people,” said Gauthier. The local non-profit also hopes the fresh look will help people to become more familiar with its thrift store that was rebranded last fall to the name ‘New For You’. Its sales provide a

Gerry ten Brink, Agapè Centre’s truck driver, Jason Pascheck, owner of Cornwall Truck Maintenance, Jay Willyard, plant manager of Olymel, and Brian Danaher project manager for Bourgon Construction. large portion of the Agapè Centre’s operating budget. For more information about the sponsorship program, contact Johanne Gauthier at 613-938-9297 ext. 27 or operationsmanager@agapecentre.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Be a ‘Citizen Scientist’ and help the St. Lawrence River Institute identify the creatures and plants that call Island Park home, on Saturday (August 8). The Alexandria BioBlitz, a race against the clock to catalogue as many species that live in the St. Lawrence River watershed as possible, gets underway at 10 a.m. Rain or shine. Lacey MacDonald, the science education specialist working with the biodiversity project, is recruiting ‘Citizen Scientists’ of all ages. “No find is insignificant,” she said. “We are thrilled to have those with specific expertise join us as volunteers such as members of birding or fishing clubs, but all interested individuals and families are more than welcome to come out as well. We provide the tools for gathering data and it provides an opportunity to get into the great outdoors and have fun at the same time.” Prizes will be awarded to the environmental investigator(s) with the most species recorded over the course of the day. For the last several months, the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences has been coordinating an inventory of birds, insects, plants,

CORNWALL, Ontario - The summer of comedy has been packing theater-goers in at The Upper Canada Playhouse, all season, and now, with the AnnaMarie Lea return of an old friend and audience favourite, you’d better hurry and get your tickets before it is too late. A theatre fixture in the area for years, actress, AnnaMarie Lea, of Cow Patti Theatre fame, moved back to Alberta, a few years ago, but has continued to return, each summer. For over 15 years, she has charmed Playhouse audiences in such hits as The Amourous Ambassador, The Sensuous Senator, Wally’s Café and The Cemetery Club. Lea is back, again this year, for a turn in the hilarious comedy, Touch and Go, by Derek Benfield, which opens this week. “Sparkling and entertaining comedies like Touch and Go have intriguing and hilarious plots involving every day characters making a huge mistake and then trying to create a fool-proof cover-up that never goes to plan,” said artistic director, Donnie Bowes, who is directing this production. The story… When his wife, Jessica, is away on business, George lends his place to his pal, Brian, for a romantic liaison with his lady friend, Wendy. This arrangement works well for George, since it gives him the opportunity to meet up with Brian’s wife Hilary, without Brian knowing… Well, you can just imagine how that will go. The top-notch cast also includes real life couple, Brian Young (Lights, Camera..Christmas, No Sex, Please We’re Sixty, The Foursome and Odd Couple Female Version) and Alison Lawrence (Bedful of Foreigners, On Golden Pond, The Affections of May) who also play husband and wife in the show. Susan Greenfield (Bedtime Stories, Lend Me A Tenor and Having Hope at Home) and Ed Leefe (The Long Weekend, The Odd Couple and Maggie’s Getting Married), round it off. “I feel fortunate to have a fabulous cast of actors who well-understand and brilliantly execute the challenges of a fast-paced comedy,” said Bowes. “I’m really glad these actors were all available for this show, all of them are Playhouse favourites and bring a wealth of comedy experience to the show.” Touch and Go runs, from August 6 to 30. Coming up: The Gentleman Clothier, by Norm Foster (September 10 to October 4); Fort Mac Attack, with Lucien and Jimmy the Janitor (October 14 to 18); Midnight Hour Memories of Rhythm and Blues, created by Chris McHarge and Colin Stewart (October 27 to November 1); and Have Yourself a Singing Little Christmas, Created by Leisa Way (November 26 to December 13). For further details or tickets, contact Upper Canada Playhouse at 613-543-3713 or 1-877550-3650; or visit www.uppercanadaplayhouse.com.

Participants row for the Heart and Stroke Foundation at WaterFest 2014.

Waterfest takes it up a notch this year Boys & Girls Club CORNWALL, Ontario - Kinsmen Cornwall Waterfest will be making a big splash at the historic Cornwall Canal this weekend. The popular free event will offer something for the entire family with the popular dragon boat races, a new dragon boat tug of war, the Waterfest main stage featuring local performers, ArtFest including local artisans, and attractions for children. Waterfest is also offering a free pancake breakfast to all participants and attendants as well as a corn roast and barbecue. Dragon boat teams are still being sought to join the races All teams have a race complement of 20 paddlers plus one drummer. Veterans and rookies are welcome to sign up. “This will be Desjardins Dragons fourth year participating in the races,” said Caisse Populaire

team captain Shawn Filion. A flower ceremony, which includes a boat with a member from each of the teams paddling to the middle of the canal and tossing a carnation into the water in honor of a survivor or in memory of a loved one, kicks off the event. “The flower ceremony that occurs prior to the final race of the day is a very heartwarming aspect of the festival,” said event co-ordinator Rebecca Runions. Waterfest also focuses awareness on heart ailments. “The nature of Waterfest blends wonderfully into what the Heart and Stroke Foundation is all about,” said Cindy Rowe, area manager. “Physical activity can be a lifesaver – literally. When you’re physically active, you can dramatically lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.” TC Media is proud to help sponsor the event.

Boys & Girls Club held its 7th Annual Tim Hortons Scramble Fore Success Golf Tournament on July 10. Local NHL player Jesse Winchester from the Colorado Avalanche returned as Tournament VIP for the 7th consecutive year. It was a great day on the course with 152 golfers and over 35 volunteers coming together to raise over $33,000 for BGC youth programs. From left are Brendan Shoniker, BGC board member, Jacquie Richards, BGC executive director and Winchester.

Something big, really big, was brewing Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com No, it wasn’t a dark and stormy night. It was a bright and calm day in a foreign country. The men were quite dark in complexion and in mood. My knowledge of the street language was limited to, “Yes, please”, “No thank you”, “I do not understand” and “Where are the toilets?” To cross the city’s Square Central we had to make our way past a large group of very muscular and angry men. They were shouting heated threats and profanities at each other, gesturing wildly in each others’ faces. Was a revolution being fomented? Was a pro-

test directed at white foreigners being planned? I tried to keep a safe distance, cowering in the shady recesses of the trees that encircled the square. I should have just moved on and retreated to the now questionable safety of our nearby third floor hotel room – but I didn’t. As usual, I was drawn to something interesting happening. As discreetly as possible, I shouldered my 200 mm telephoto lens and started shooting. A local, one who was not part of the melee, eventually joined me. “Who do YOU think will win?” he eventually asked. “I have absolutely no idea what’s going on” I replied, not taking my eye away from the camera’s viewfinder.

PASSIONS BOILING – Was it a lynch mob, the beginning of yet another revolution or, the start of a civil war or a protest against the tyrannical government? I could see the threatening gestures, but could not understand any of the words that accompanied them. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk)

Haul that election firewagon off the blocks Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Officially the 2015 federal election kicked off on the weekend when Prime Minister Stephen Harper asked the governor-general to dissolve parliament. Unofficially the local campaign didn’t begin until Monday, when MP Guy Lauzon, fittingly, had his first campaign sign pounded into the Bobka property in Cornwall. The late Judy Bobka, a staunch Conservative right up there with the late Joe Gunn, was surely looking down with a smile when her husband Dan accepted the sign. What will follow is the longest campaign in Canadian federal history, with wall-to-wall rhetoric, promises and political double-speak right up to Oct. 19. To understand the length of the campaign look at it this way – today you’re reading this wearing shorts and a t-shirt…by the time your vote is counted you’ll still be working off the Thanksgiving turkey and putting the final touches to your Halloween costume. What can we expect here in Fun City, and across the rest of SD and SG in the weeks to come? MP Guy Lauzon goes into the campaign as the man to beat for two reasons: 1) He’s the incumbent, and 2) His opponents will have a hard time convincing the electorate his record in

this last term is enough to warrant a change in Ottawa. Lauzon’s not invincible. Points his opponents will hope to make include the fact that a pair of chemical tanks are back on the Cornwall shoreline thanks to a deal Transport Canada struck with a private firm. Lauzon, it appears, was not in on the deal, but it happened on his watch…and critics are suggesting he didn’t do nearly enough to see the tanks removed from the waterfront once word began to circulate that they were being built. One term ago he was also the MP when the Mohawks of Akwesasne forced CBSA officers out of the border checkpoint on Cornwall Island when the law-enforcement types started to arm themselves. At that time there were also whispers that Lauzon was more concerned about his status within the circles of power in Ottawa, as opposed to the work he was supposed to be doing on behalf of local residents. The local New Democrats have sent Patrick Burger into the mix (cue the newspaper headlines about getting fried, cooked or grilled and so on). Burger, a relative unknown on the local political scene, will look to capitalize on a wave of left-wing support that appears to be gaining momentum, if you believe in all that polling data. Despite the successes made by NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and his party, I still can’t see a day

when the New Democrats win a federal election. I might be eating crow in October, but I doubt it. Finally, Bernadette Clement will carry the Liberal banner in hopes of (again) trying to trade her city council seat in for an MP’s office in Ottawa. She ran in the last federal election against Lauzon, and got trounced. Clement is exactly the kind of candidate political parties dream about. She is a successful female professional with a political pedigree who can carry herself well before the cameras in both official languages. What she hasn’t been able to do is convince voters beyond the city limits that she can do the job, and that will be her biggest challenge. Lauzon, for all the shortcomings critics suggest concerning his track record when it comes

to Cornwall-specific issues, is almost universallyloved in the United Counties. His right-hand man, Eric Duncan, is warden of the United Counties and mayor of North Dundas township. And the United Counties is where I think this election will be decided when it comes to debating the merits of another Lauzon triumph. If his opponents can score points in the rural parts of the riding, they will have a shot at defeating Lauzon – because the veteran MP has some serious questions to answer concerning issues in Cornwall. If Burger and Clement fail to convince rural voters that Lauzon needs to be sent packing, then this riding will once again be bathed in blue. See you in October, when the weather will be cooler, but the political rhetoric will be red hot.

residential First Street where all the bikes are. Here is my favourite gripe. I refuse to eat at that kindly old white haired southern gentleman’s restaurants, you know the man, he made goatees vogue, dressed in white from head to toe and teased us with secret herbs and spices. I refuse to eat there again until some one at head office actually visits our fair town and realizes that their restaurants have been blanched as white as that kindly old mans hair. Maybe they like the dusty rose and sun baked white look, but come on. And finally, why is it that many people I talk too seem to

want to tear down those ‘awful’ smoke stacks on the Domtar site. I have no idea if those stacks can be saved, but if they can, clean them up, paint them up, print HOWARD SMITH on one and SMITHVILLE on the other and preserve our history by creating a monument to our changing times. Now, just to show that I am not a complete cranky SOB, on July 25, I started up my sprinkler and heard my neighbour yell....”Mr. Even numbered address, today is an odd numbered day.” I grumbled back to the hose bib and twisted off the water supply all in the name of following the rules.

It must be the dawg days of August upon us, that or I am getting crusty about certain things. I qualify for free coffee at Burger King now, I better start cashing in, maybe it will calm me down. By now we have all heard and read about the worm selling Cadieux kids making headlines for all the wrong reasons. If I fished, I would drive over every day, they couldn’t pick enough worms and I am sure everyone so inclined would do the same thing. Chins up kids, its not your city shutting you down, it rules made by grown ups, good rules that get

exploited by grumps messing with a good thing. Just ask the people who had to tear down their rink last winter. While outdoor rinks and worm dilemmas are sticky situations, this one bugs me more. How is that Second Street one lane, shaved markings main artery working out? Just last week I passed a bike west bound near St. Felix. I think it was Thursday. I got hung up at the red light at McConnell and the bike passed me. Same thing happened at Marlborough. If the idea was to slow everything down, standing ovation, it worked. Please bring back our four lane main artery, I make better time on

CFRA coverage of ‘wormgate’ creates a frenzy Claude McIntosh

sleeping in doorways or on sidewalks in our business district, or strung-out drug addicts pestering passers-by for spare change. Our murder rate per capita is one of the lowest in the country. Our parking bylaw enforcement people have been known to actually hang around an expired meter for a few minutes in hope that the owner will show up before a ticket has to be slapped on the windshield, unlike Ottawa where the Green Hornets hand out tickets as if they are working on commission. We don’t need transit cops to protect our bus drivers and passengers. Our transit drivers smile and say hello to passengers. They even know many by their first name. And if they spot a mother with a stroller running for the bus, they don’t leave her standing in the exhaust fumes. Few months back a group of city police officers kicked in to buy back a down-on-their-luck couple’s wedding ring from a pawn shop. Several city firefighters have taken a blind man who barely survives on a disability pension under their wing, helping him out with groceries and other essentials. The same man’s hefty vet bill for his guide dog was paid by an anonymous person. All we know is that he was a city firefighter. TRIVIA Christ Anglican Church at Upper Canada Village came from which of the Lost Villages - 1) Maple Grove, 2) Mille Roches, 3) Moulinette, 4) Dickinson’s Landing, 5) Aultsville. TRIVIA ANSWER Smithville was - literally - in the shadow of Howard Smith Paper Mill with a few dozen homes on Hazel and Hickory streets

that ran off Second Street. Smithville disappeared in 1959 when the mill added No. 6 paper machine, at the time Canada’s biggest fine grade paper machine. It was housed in a 450-foot building. Some of Smithville’s residents re-located to Lakeview Heights, a post-seaway subdivision. HERE AND THERE One day’s worth of New York City headlines that may indicate society is going to hades in a hand basket: * Florida boy, 11, charged after toddler strangled. * LA gangs initiate contest to see who can kill 100 people first. * Man kills lover, keeps her body in closet for three weeks. * Mother says she forgot baby was left in hot van while she went shopping. AMEN! “The men and women in blue have certain rules of engagement that they have to follow, but at any given minute in a 24-hour day they’re dealing with folks who have no rules of engagement.” - Memphis Mayor Wharton on the shooting death of a veteran Memphis police officer. Ouch! That was a double-over kinda kick to the groin. Of all the acerbic critical attacks on our city the past few days over wormgate, one of the most cutting came during an Ottawa radio station Wednesday morning talkfest. Rob Snow is one of my favourite CFRA talk show personalities. He is smart, articulate and unlike the often cantankerous Lowell Green, gives callers the opportunity to disagree with his take on a hot-button issue. But Wednesday morning was something to behold. Snow was filling in for Green. Perhaps it was the record heat wave that had seized the Capital City on that Wednesday, but the pinch hitter came out swinging for the centre-field fence. He spent the better part of the first hour beating up on Cornwall, suggesting insanity is in no short supply here and we are a bunch of heartless, callous clouts. He even, somehow, managed to work in a comparison to Stalingrad. If you can’t find Stalingrad on the map, it is because in 1961 its name was changed to Volgograd. He suggested that not only was a kid-operated worm business nixed by a city bylaw, but the bylaw cops also had shut down a lemonade stand operated by some kids. Just not true. That is a social media myth. Ironically, the host spent the second half of the show bemoaning the untruths that saturate social media.

To say he primed the pump and worked his audience into a frenzy with all the zeal of an Elmer Gantry type evangelist warming up for an altar call would not be an understatement. The lines lit up with callers eager to add their two cents’ worth and skewer Cornwall. Oh, and did they, with the host cheering them on. Somewhat baffling, however, was a call from a Cornwall woman. The host assumed she wanted to talk about wormgate. Surprisingly, she hadn’t heard about the controversy. She wanted to talk about the dentist who killed Cecil the lion in Africa. So, she got a 15-second briefing on the worm issue, then was asked what she thought of it all. Whaddya think she said. He even reached back in time and brought up the Dodge City smuggling days that gave the city a black eye, and the mayor of the day who allegedly had to go into hiding. I don’t know if Rob Snow has ever been to Cornwall. Perhaps the economic development folks should invite him down for a day. He might be surprised to discover that it is a great, caring community filled with good, hardworking folks. So caring that they not only support their own hospital, but donate to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and The Ottawa Hospital. Check it out. Just a warning, Rob. We are a bit different than Ottawa. We don’t have rival gangs shooting up the town, or carrying out home invasions every third day. Can’t recall a car jacking. Muggings are rare. We don’t have hoards of homeless people

DANCING QUEEN: Cornwall’s Julia Kuipers headed to Paris for performance tour Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - As she has done for several years now, Cornwall’s Julia Kuipers competed in the 5-6-7-8 Showtime dance competition in Mont Tremblant at the end of April. This time, however, the competition was made even sweeter with the news that among 2,100 dancers, she was 1 of 10 selected to join the prestigious Dance Tour in Paris for one week this August. “It is a dream come true,” said Kuipers. The contemporary and hip hop dancer explained that she had set her sights on this goal upon her return to dance after a knee injury which required surgery. The absence from dance made her want to

“community partner since 1985”

compete even more. Now in her 10th year of dance at the Double Creation Dance Studio in Alexandria, Kuipers is grateful to her teachers for their inspiration and support. Her solo and the three group dances performed with her peers garnered a number of accolades at various competitions this year. Kuipers, 18, is thrilled by the prospect of this trip to France - and with good reason. While there, she will be taking classes taught by top choreographers of ballet, contemporary, lyrical, salsa, new style and hip hop. She will also take part in a photo shoot with the other 29 dancers invited on the tour. Though in receipt of a $500 scholarship toward the trip, Kuipers will be hosting some fundraising activities to offset the cost of the tour.

education

Key challenges unearthed in employment survey Ed Allard The Akwesasne Area Management Board has recently released the results of its first labour market survey, which covers Akwesasne territory on both sides of the international border. Some 222 employers from a wide range of employment sectors across the territory participated in the survey, as did 454 individuals. While the survey indicates a fairly diversified, sustainable business economy, perhaps weighted more towards small businesses with less than five employees, it also points to some key challenges. The overall workforce is about 4,000, but about one third comes from outside the native community, the majority being from Cornwall. The estimated unemployment rate for the community as a whole is about 16%, which suggests an eligible workforce closer to 5,000. For the Canadian side alone unemployment is about 22%, which is well above local averages. The survey also highlighted a demographic challenge. Over the next 10 years, approximately 5,800 people in the age range 10-24 can be

expected to enter the workforce. About 3,300 people in the age range 55-65 would normally be expected to retire over the same timeframe, though that’s somewhat speculative because a growing number of employees are continuing to work past age 65. So, Akwesasne must find some 2,000+ additional jobs in the next 10 years to keep pace with employment needs, over and above the current unemployment situation. After that, the baby boom, which, for Akwesasne, lags the rest of the country by about 10 years, will begin to take things in the opposite direction. According to the survey, employers plan to hire about 400 full and part-time employees in the next 12 months, nearly half of which will result from business restructuring or expansion. That is certainly good news for the community in the short term and indicates a healthy business environment. Sustaining that rate of hiring is the greater challenge. Akwesasne boasts a higher level of college and university education than the Ontario

average. Yet, one of the challenges is finding suitable employment opportunities for that level of education within Akwesasne and its immediate surroundings, which leaves people unemployed, under-employed or moving away from the area for work. There are a number of training and subsidized work programs available for those who need to develop or upgrade their skills. Employers cite management and leadership skills as their top priority, followed by customer service skills, sales strategies skills, bookkeeping and communications skills. However, the appropriate training is not always available within Akwesasne. The distance to travel to the training site and lack of awareness of training and support programs are other barriers. Although Cornwall has a much larger labour market, there isn’t a large native presence in the workforce, when compared to the number of non-natives in the Akwesasne workforce. The international border doesn’t help matters, but there are also some widely held perceptions and

misconceptions on both sides. While some Cornwall employers may be reluctant to hire natives, according to the survey some 95% of natives are reluctant to apply for jobs outside of Akwesasne. Akwesasne represents a significant impact on the Cornwall economy. The combined population is around 20-25,000, some 10-12,000 of whom live on the Canadian side. Approximately $32 million per year is spent in one form or another in Cornwall. As a minority group, it’s not unusual for native shoppers to patronize places that employ members of their group. That can boost revenues for those Cornwall businesses and add employment opportunities for Akwesasne at the same time – something that both sides need to consider. Overall the survey provides some very valuable data on the current labour market across Akwesasne. It will be a valuable tool for community leaders to focus efforts on training and employment strategies and to identify and deal with the various barriers to employment.

Jobs Now: Empowerment to Employment Looking to hire reliable, motivated, efficient and adaptable staff? How does 12 weeks of financial assistance ($11/hr) to help offset the cost of wages sound? By participating in the JOBS NOW program, we will provide you with an employee who fits your requirements, AND provide you with a 12-week subsidy. Your employee will be pre-screened and

trained for the job. We will assist with integrating employees with disabilities into the workplace, implementing accommodations and provide oneon-one coaching. The Jobs Now program allows skilled disabled individuals the opportunity to enter the labour market. Studies have shown that people

Even though school is officially out for the summer, many students throughout the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) were still learning. More than 250 students participated in the UCDSB Summer Learning Program – a three-week literacy initiative designed to improve student achievement, engage reluctant readers and reduce summer learning loss, through the exploration of non-fiction reading and writing.

Golf: A family sport

6201057

Are you tired of sitting on the bench, watching your children play a sport while you’re not included? Maybe it’s time to consider golf. One of golf’s main advantages is that it can be played by the entire family. Parents and kids can play together on the same course. In fact, golf courses are seeing more and more families playing together-and each member being equally passionate about the sport. Golf is well adapted to kids; even young children can play it. Little ones can start off by simply hitting balls; it’s not even necessary to step foot on the course. Gradually, as they develop their putting and driving skills, you can introduce them to the rules of the game. For adults and kids alike, the greatest joy of playing golf is hitting balls. Each shot offers the satisfaction of watching the ball shoot up and away. And the more you improve, the more you want to become even more precise and consistent. important that they are coached well, since Golf is a sport in which you can improve, blos- the same.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Chesterville Special Olympian is coming home with a boatload of medals. Christina Judd-Campbell has captured four gold medals and a silver at the World Special Olympics taking place in Los Angeles currently. Her medal haul includes gold for rhythmic hoop level 4A, rhythmic ribbon level 4B, rhythmic clubs level 4B and rhythmic all-around level 4B, as well as a silver in rhythmic ball level 4A. The New Cab Driver

Last Wednesday a passenger in a taxi heading for Tampa International Airport leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then the shaking driver said “Are you OK? I’m so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me.” The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, “I didn’t realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly.” The driver replied, “No, no, I’m the one who is sorry, it’s entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I’ve been driving a hearse for the past 25 years.”

“let it all hang out!”

MacDonald was a trailblazing politician Opinion Column - Sultan Jessa Canada has lost a renowned and trailblazing politician. She will be missed by many. I met Flora MacDonald several times in Cornwall and at the Maxville Highland Games. MacDonald, originally from Kingston, died in Ottawa at the ripe age of 89. She was a cabinet minister in two Tory governments over the course of a political career that stretched from the early 1970s to the late 1980. She became Canada’s first foreign affairs minister. MacDonald was also the one of a dozen candidates seeking the leadership of Progressive Conservative Party. She became the second woman in Canadian history to make a serious bid

for the leadership of a major federal party in the country. The Kingston MP did not give up. Even after retiring from active politics, she began serving humanity around the world. She made a real difference in the lives of many, young and old. MacDonald ran against Joe Clark. Many had predicted MacDonald was going to win the leadership. However, when the results of the first ballot were announced, she only received 214 votes. Many political pundits later admitted her loss of support during the leadership convention was partly due to people getting cold feet about a more left-leaning candidate. Many others openly explained MacDonald lost because people were

as minister of external affairs. MacDonald was probably also the first woman foreign affairs minister in the world then. She was good at her job and during the Iran hostage crisis when rioters seized the United States embassy, she oversaw plans to spirit six Americans sheltering in the Canadian embassy in Tehran out of the country. MacDonald quit politics after losing the 1988 elections. Born in Nova Scotia, MacDonald was introduced to politics at the young age of 11 when her father took her to a Conservative Party meeting. Times have changed and we see many women in federal, provincial and municipal politics. A century ago, women could not even vote in Canada. We have come a long way.

reluctant to vote for a female leader. “I am not a candidate because I am a woman,” MacDonald told convention delegates in February 1976. “But I say to you quite frankly that because I am a woman my candidacy helps our party.” The “Flora power” did not convince delegates. She was a woman in what was traditionally a man’s game. MacDonald pulled out of the race asking her supporters to vote for Clark, who eventually won and then went on to serve as prime minister for less than a year. MacDonald, a good friend of Cornwall, was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1972 general election to represent Kingston and the Islands.
