CORNWALL, Ontario - If you have an appetite for politics and a free BBQ lunch with musical entertainment, then you should probably mark your calendar for MP Guy Lauzon’s 10th annual constituency picnic on Sunday, August 10. The Conservative Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry MP’s popular annual event takes place from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at his home at 17276 County Road 18 in St. Andrews West. Lauzon, his wife Frances, and his staff are expecting this year’s picnic to be their largest and most colourful political summer bash yet. Over the years, the crowd has swelled to nearly 400 people. “Frances and I have really enjoyed opening our backyard to constituents. It is a great chance to catch up with friends in an informal setting,” said Lauzon. United Counties of SDG Warden Eric Duncan will also be in attendance. “It’s an informal afternoon at Guy & France’s home that provides constituents

a chance to meet their MP and staff,” said Duncan. “We really enjoy the day because it provides another setting for us to meet people besides the constituency office.” Both local politicians agreed that the event is about family and friends, and not old school politicking. “It’s not political at all,” said Lauzon. “We love attending many dinners and community events throughout riding, and people are always so welcoming. This is our way of returning the favour.” Lauzon noted the unfortunate but unavoidable timing of the event coinciding with the last day of the Williamstown Fair. “This event always falls on the second Sunday of August, and summertime weekends are packed with festivals,” he said. Musician Smokey Léger is providing the live entertainment. And Lauzon’s wife Frances will be singing a few tunes. The family-friendly and alcohol-free event also includes an inflatable bounce house for kids. For more information, call MP Guy Lauzon’s office 937-3331.

Hospital’s new telemetry system doesn’t miss a beat Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A new telemetry system at the Cornwall Community Hospital is helping to keep a patient’s best interest at heart. The hospital has introduced a new system that allows a patient with potential heart problems to be continuously monitored throughout the entire building via a wireless network. Telemetry allows doctors and nurses to

monitor a patient’s heart rate and rhythm via a portable unit attached to their chest and examined from a central nursing station monitor. “The key,” said Mike Kroon, the manager of the hospital’s critical care unit, “is that we can obtain instant, real-time information with no breaks in data.” The device itself is the size of a standard smartphone, with a display screen and five wires connected to patches which pick up signals from the heart before sending them directly to the monitor. The monitor then

displays the electrical signal as a picture of a patient’s heartbeat. The new telemetry device shows the patient’s heart rhythm right on the screen and is transported in a clear bag that is worn around the neck so it will not interfere with the usual routine and care provided during hospitalization. Doctors usually recommend using telemetry when a patient has an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), or to monitor how the heart responds to new medication. One of the major advantages is that the most responsible

nurse or physician can detect emergent medical issues before they become a problem.

After going live at the end of May, the new system has already begun to show off its many improvements. Because the old device had to be removed and then reattached to allow patients to visit different areas in the hospital, many of them would remain in their area until it was time for discharge. “We know walking promotes engagement and quicker recovery time so having technology that permits patient mobility while ensuring total observation of the activity of the heart, is highly preferable to having a patient confined to a bed,” said Jeanette Despatie, hospital CEO.

Busy summer for task force CRTF officers netted 35 garbage bags of fine cut tobacco, weighing a total of 471 kilograms, at the Waste Water Treatment plant in Cornwall on July 12. On June 27, the task force received a tip that a package was observed being placed into the trunk of a late model Hyundai Elantra. The task force stopped the vehicle, and officers found $34,000 in US currency inside a tote bag in the vehicle’s trunk.

Nightmares Over For the first time in 40 years, Denis Labbe is free from the nightmares of a terrible tragedy that took place at a Canadian army base that took the lives of six teenaged boys and injured countless others. Labbe, once a 26-year-old corporal stationed at the CFB Valcartier base hospital, has been haunted by the tragedy since 1974, when , a routine safety lecture at a cadet camp turned into a warzone for 140 cadets crammed into an improvised classroom after a live grenade exploded.

The club donated $2,000 to the girls softball league on June 29. “We have had a long tradition of supporting many minor sports teams and leagues in the community,” said Ray Eady, vicepresident of Kinsmen Cornwall.

Dragon boat races hit the Seaway Saturday, Aug. 9 Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall WaterFest organizers aren’t blowing smoke when they say this year’s event is going to be epic. The fifth annual WaterFest in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be making a big splash at the historic Cornwall Canal on Saturday, August 9. “WaterFest is all about fun family activities, boat racing, music, artists and saving lives,” said Lynne Groulx, event co-organizer and the foundation’s program coordinator. WaterFest kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at the west end of the canal near the Kinsmen soccer fields. Groulx and co-organizer Rebecca Runions guarantees the free event will offer something for everyone with dragon boat racing, a WaterFest Stage, ArtFest, delicious

food vendors, mini-putt, and more. The entertainment lineup includes the MacCulloch Dancers (10 a.m.), magicianmentalist-illusionist David Jans (10:30 a.m.), Zumba with Crystal (11 a.m.), singer/ songwriter Graham Greer (11:30 a.m.), BCDC Dance Group (12:30 p.m.) Mandee Woods and Band (1:00 p.m.), Celtic Fidlin’ with Rebecca (2 p.m.), Jody Marsolais - The Rhythm Room (3 p.m.), and the Keegan Larose Band (3:30 p.m.) The proceeds raised from the event will go towards implementing Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs) throughout the area and life-saving Heart and Stroke research. “This event helps to create awareness for the Foundation, it’s a mix of advocacy and fundraising,” said Groulx. There are over 200 AEDs located across Cornwall, Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, as

well as Prescott-Russell and Akwesasne. “Last year, three local men were saved thanks to AEDs,” said Groulx. “There are fathers, husbands and grandfathers that are still alive because of every donation we receive - no matter how small.” The opportunity to sign-up for the dragon boat races has already passed. But watching the race is almost as fun, according to Runions. A total of 16 boats with glittery gold dragons

baring their teeth will be racing over 200 metres across the St. Lawrence River. A team generally consists of 20 paddlers, a drummer at the bow and is guided by a steers-person at the stern. The ArtFest component of the fundraising event starts at 9 a.m. It features over 25 local artists selling a huge gamut of wares. “Now I lay me down to sleep…” Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

Those opening words of Joseph Addison’s 1711 lullaby continue with “I recommend myself to His care.” That’s my prayer when I sleep in odd places when I’m on the road. Boy, have I slept in odd places! One of the earliest that comes to mind was in 1960. My fellow aviation nut Larry and I had hitchhiked from Toronto to Montreal. After exploring the interesting types of aircraft at Cartierville Airport, we needed an affordable place to sleep. We found an unlocked Sikorsky S-55 helicopter parked at the far corner of the airport. As the September sun set, we clambered into its commodious cabin. We soon realized that the helicopter’s large cabin had become a heat sink during the unusually hot late

September day. “I’ll go up to the cockpit and slide the windows open.” Down below, our sleeping quarters became less hot, then a bit cool, then cooler and cooler. Clambering up to the cockpit around midnight to close its windows proved to be a futile gesture. The horse had already left the barn. Eventually, the starlit sky looked down on us shivering vagabonds. There was a sheen of ice on the puddles. At first light, we left the aircraft, in search of the warmth that could be found in an all-night restaurant. Ever slept in a canoe? I have. I was exploring a meandering river and its tributary ponds and bogs as it made its way through central Ontario’s Canadian Shield country. I had been so mesmerized by the sights of otters, turtles, loons and herons that I had not noticed that darkness was imminent. It was time to set up my tent. Surrounding me were bogs, marshes and bulrushes. I would not have been surprised to find baby Moses

somewhere in the tangle of vegetation. I didn’t find Moses, nor was I able to claim a nine-foot by nine-foot plot of dry, flat land. I slept overnight in ‘After You’, my peacefully bobbing 15-foot canoe. I’ll bet you didn’t know that I had named my first canoe after you. When I hitchbiked across Canada, from Vancouver Island to St. John’s, Newfoundland (and Labrador) in 2005, I had Keesha, my American Eskimo miniature as my travelling companion – and bedside companion. To save weight, we had no tent. We slept on park benches, in picnic shelters, a baseball dugout and airport terminals. In one of the renditions of Addison’s lullaby, it says, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, His love to guard me through the night, and wake me in the morning’s light.” The Lord acted through Keesha during those nights. She kept my soul safe; she guarded

IT’LL DO JUST FINE – A picnic shelter beside a river is an ideal place for cross-country cyclist to get out of the rain, prepare a meal and even spend the night. Been there, done that, many a time. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk) me through the nights by letting out a very low growl to alert me to a stroller, a night watchman, a raccoon, or a skunk passing by. She was my angel that watched me through the night. At morning’s light she would be my alarm clock by licking my face. I have slept everywhere; everywhere, that is, except in a five star hotel.

American eel numbers in the St. Lawrence River are plummeting CORNWALL, Ontario - They may look snakelike and come complete with a revoltingly slimy exterior - but biology experts are working to save the American eel. The eel was once a staple part of the St. Lawrence River ecosystem, but experts are now worried the animal could be in danger of seeing its numbers plummet beyond the staggering statistics suggested to date. “Now it’s rare to meet someone that has seen a wild eel in Ontario, and the public is losing the important connection that First Nations and European settlers once had with this species,” said St. Lawrence River Institute research scientist Matt Windle. “Eel populations in the Great Lakes system declined severely in the 1990s, likely as a cumulative result of habitat loss, overfishing, and

climate change.” Experts like Windle are expected to meet next month in Quebec City to discuss the declining eel population at a science symposium. In the meantime biologists are still trying to get their heads around the drop in eel numbers. Because of steeply declining populations, American eels are classified as endangered in Ontario. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife is considering American eels for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The average number of eels migrating up the St. Lawrence River near Cornwall decreased to roughly 40,000 per year in 2013 from one milion in the 1980s. Windle said American eels used to be kings of the St. Lawrence River, helping to shape the habitat stretching well west of Cornwall.

“Historically, eels would have had a stabilizing effect on Great Lakes ecosystems, through their super-abundance, long life spans, and role at the top of the food chain,” he said. The American eel spawns in seawater but spends most of its life in freshwater lakes and streams. Its spawning zone is the Sargasso Sea east of the Bahamas and southwest of Bermuda in the North Atlantic Ocean at reported depths of up to 1,400 feet. Each female lays up to 20 million eggs during her lifetime. When they hatch, the transparent leaflike larval eels spread to great distances, moving with the ocean currents. They assume the shape of the adults as they reach the mouths of freshwater streams after about a year at sea. Females found in the Great Lakes watershed can remain in freshwater for upwards of 20 years, growing to more than 40 inches and seven pounds before returning to the Sargasso Sea to spawn and die. Males are considerably smaller and seldom exceed 24 inches in length. Only female American eels are found in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. It’s a mystery where the males go because they are present in numbers equal to females at the mouth of the St. Lawrence. American eels have been found far inland as the

Grand River near Lake Michigan, and in Ashland County on Lake Superior in Wisconsin. Eel flesh is considered a delicacy in many parts of the world, especially among Europeans and the Japanese. The global sushi market is driving exploitation of the American and other eels. Although commercial fishing of American eels is now banned in the Great Lakes states and Ontario; a limited fishery remains in Quebec. Dams also undermine the species, thwarting migration upstream in the St. Lawrence River. Hydroelectric facility operators are making adjustments to allow passage. Ontario Hydro and the New York Power Authority have installed eel laddersthat have the potential to restore healthy populations. The river instituteis currently studying the habitat usage of eels in the St. Lawrence River as part of a research project funded by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in collaboration with Ontario Power Generation, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The goal of the project is to fill in critical knowledge gaps regarding the preferred habitat conditions of eels at various life stages. Eels are considered habitat generalists and have the widest habitat range of any freshwater species in North America.

VROOM! Bikers get their motors running for OSPCA Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Local bikers will be revving their engines for the region’s animal shelter, motoring across Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SDG) at the seventh annual Cash for Critters event, Saturday, August 23. Riders with a soft spot for animals are scheduled to rally at the Nav Centre on Montreal Road in Cornwall at 9 a.m. before embarking on a two-hour journey. “The motorcycle rally has become one of our biggest summer fundraisers,” said Christine Russell, OSPCA fundraising committee member. Riders all pay a minimum of $25 to be in the rally, helping to raise some funds for the animal adoption centre. The ride starts at 9:45 a.m. sharp. Russell expects as many as 100 bikers to attend. After they return from their ride, a BBQ lunch and an opportunity to win door prizes will be waiting. “We have a large group of repeat participants every year,” she said. “Even a dog who rides along safely in his side car.” South Glengarry residents Brenda and Dean Sturkenboom rode for the OSPCA in 2013. The duo have been geared up ever since for the event’s return. PHARMACY

“There are motorcycles from as far as you can see all riding to support the critters in a camaraderie of friendship brought on by the same love of animals that we all share,” said Brenda. The Sturkenbooms have made donations to the Cash for Critters event since its inception, but last year was the first year they actively participated. “If the shelter does not have money to run then the homeless animals have no where to go - or the unfortunate animals that are in homes that are neglectful or abusive have no one that can help them out of their sad situation,” she said. Russell noted that the importance of events like Cash for Critters isn’t always measured in dollars. “It’s not just about the funds that are generated, but the information and message we are able to get across,” she said. Other ways to make a positive contribution to the animal shelter are collecting and bringing in empty pop bottles, donating bags of shredded paper and used items to sell at their annual yard sale, and participating at fundraising events. If you are unable to attend this hair-blowing event, make a donation online here. For more information, visit www.sdg. ontariospca.ca or join www.facebook.com/ OSPCAforSDG.

PAMELA CUMMING: Bringing her music back home Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - If Pamela Cumming was unsure that she wanted to make music her career, she certainly came to an immediate and forgone conclusion when she set foot on the campus grounds of the Berklee College of Music, five years ago. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but when the time came to choose a course of study, music seemed to be the obvious choice,” said the 24 year old who has recently returned home to Williamstown, her studies complete. “As soon as I got to Boston and got out of the car, I said: ‘I think I can live here, I like this place.’” Cumming was born into it, you might say, beginning piano lessons with her mother from the age of four, and subsequently, the violin. Homeschooled, throughout her childhood, she was able to dedicate half her day to practice.

That’s how you get to Berklee - to paraphrase an old joke. Despite her tender age, some of her most impressive credits , thus far, include performances with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, as a member of the Videri String Quartet, as well as tours with Berklee World Strings and singer-songwriter Nikolas Metaxas in Cyprus and Greece. A highlight for her was a recent performance with Dream Theatre, a prestigious progressive metal/rock band comprised of Berklee alumni, at the Boston Opera House. Following her four years at school and a year teaching in Boston, now with her visa run out, Cumming is ready to begin the next chapter in her life. As for what her future holds, she says that she would like to teach, play and tour. I “want to do it all; I like doing a great mix of stuff.” Although much of her training was classical, Cumming says that now she enjoys

the singer songwriter genre. While at Berklee, Cumming roomed with a young singer/songwriter from Fairbanks Alaska, Emily Anderson. The two became fast friends and soon discovered their musical chemistry as well. The talented duo will take to the road, as it were, for a small tour, beginning at home, on August 9, at the Williamstown Fair, Center Stage, at noon. The ukulele/violin duo will perform some of Anderson’s originals as well as a great selection covers including Bill Withers’, Ain’t No Sunshine; Come Together, by The Beatles; and Some Chocolates, by The Blow. Other shows in the tour include: August 13, at the Quirky Carrot, Alexandria, 7pm, $20 (includes coffee and dessert); August 14, at St. Andrew’s United Church in Williamstown, 7pm, with Graham Greer and Tracy Lalonde (pay-what-you-want); August 15, Bar 1718, Toronto (also performing that night will be

CUMMING

Winnie Brave); and August 16; Washago Festival, Orillia. For further information about their music, visit, www.emilyandersonak.com and www.pamelacumming.com.

An artsy August at TAG with OBO Studios Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Our Beautiful Obsession (OBO) Studios is unleashing the creative force of 29 artists at The Art Gallery (TAG) Cornwall this month. OBO Studios’ new group exhibit titled Small Wonders opened on August 1 and it runs until the 29th at the downtown gallery located at 168 Pitt Street. The Cornwall art studio, run by Emily MacLeod and Tracy-Lynn Chisholm, will

be at TAG in full force on Saturday, August 9 during an open reception and artist meetand-greet at 2 p.m. Local artists have been masterfully crafting dozens of pieces for over a year, each interpreting the show’s theme on their own terms. “The results are as varied as the colourful artists,” said MacLeod. From large canvases of chic martini glasses to mini still life, from serene Buddha to belly dancer, a single feather to a shoe, and a wild collection of intricately beaded

mosaic eyes that you have to see to believe. A recent grant from Your Arts Council (YAC) Cornwall & the Counties helped TAG really put area artists in the spotlight. “We’re thrilled with the space. The new lighting system at TAG is spectacular,” said Chisholm. “Thanks to YAC, it not only elevates the elegant ambiance, it genuinely showcases every inch of art.” The show will also be graced with a visit and artwork from Ana Lucia de Wilson. The spirited oil painter resided in Cornwall for a couple years before returning with her

family to her native Guatemala. This is OBO’s first group exhibit at TAG. The artistic merger feels like a perfect fit since the studio is located further down the block at 44 Pitt Street. In July, Focus Art’s ‘Summer in the City’ exhibition adorned the walls at TAG. The local association’s 77 original mixed media pieces wowed spectators. For more information about Small Wonders, search for OBO Studios on Facebook and visit facebook.com/ tagcornwall.

Buddy, can you spare a Tenor? Roxanne Delage ROXANNEDELAGE@GMAIL.COM

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Upper Canada Playhouse recently raised the curtain on the third show of its regular summer season, the very funny Lend Me A Tenor, by Ken Ludwig. A great combination of style and silliness, the play is set in 1934 Cleveland, where worldfamous tenor, Tito Morelli is scheduled to appear for a one-night-only performance of Otello. After arriving late and inadvertently taking too many tranquilizers, a plan is hatched to have the assistant manager of the opera perform the epic role. When the real Morelli wakes, there are soon two Otello’s caught up in a mess of female fans, a jealous wife and irate police. As usual, director, Donnie Bowes, has put together for us a who’s who of audience

explosive entrance of Tito (Davis) and his wife (Greenfield); an impressive musical number between Tito and Max (Greeves); and the fastmotion recap of the entire play at the curtain call – just to name a few. Again, as always, the set and costumes are a visual delight. Coming up next at the Playhouse: On A First Name Basis, by and starring Norm Foster, runs from September 4 to 28; Memories of Rock & Roll (from the producers of Memories of the Summer of Love), October 16 to 26; and Lights, Camera… Christmas! … The TV Christmas Special That Nearly Never Was, by Jesse Collins, from November 27 to December Pictured are Playhouse regulars Doug 14. Have a heart, help the hospital Todd Lihou TODD.LIHOU@TC.TC

Contrary to popular belief, turns out I do have a heart. I have proof – I saw it for myself. In an effort to gather more exposure, and see first-hand what it is like to undergo what is quickly becoming an every-day procedure, the Cornwall Community Hospital was gracious enough to subject me to a cardiac ultrasound. So last week, just like a regular patient, I visited the diagnostic imaging department at the McConnell Avenue hospital and lay for about half an hour in a dimly-lit room while a technician probed the inner-workings of my chest. Sure enough, perhaps in record time, the image of a thumping, rhythmic heart took shape on a screen that hung across from my bed. The technician, a thoughtful man named Asad Saeed who is originally from Pakistan but has made Cornwall his home for the last four years, had hooked up a handful of electrodes to me to monitor my heart, and then used the magic wand of the ultrasound to paint of picture

of my innards. It’s a little unnerving, at first. Most of us take our hearts (and plenty of other bodily organs) for granted. At the risk of seeming overly melodramatic, it’s not until you see it on TV, keeping you alive, that you realize how fragile life is. Saeed was the consummate professional. He explained every step of the procedure to me, and was quick to answer every question – except one. I desperately wanted to know how my heart looked to him. Anyone who has had an ultrasound knows that technicians rarely, if ever, tell you what they are seeing with any degree of specificity. Instead they write a report, and days after the procedure a doctor will tell you what was found. Saeed followed this policy to the letter of the law. But he wasn’t without stories. I asked him how it felt to complete a procedure on a patient that could ultimately help save their lives, when considered as part of a plan to diagnose and treat a cardiac ailment. He got very serious and used words like “wonderful” and “pleasant” to describe an

occasion when an individual on his ultrasound bed began complaining of chest pains in the middle of a procedure. Things got so bad that the man began to turn blue. Saeed quickly told a doctor, and before long the man was being air-lifted to Ottawa. Without Saeed’s quick thinking, things could have turned out differently for the man who ultimately made a full recovery after spending weeks in hospital. It’s just another story about a day in the life of the diagnostic imaging department at the hospital. It’s also a department that needs our help. The hospital has undergone, and in some ways continues to undergo, a massive restructuring. Behind all the new bricks and mortar, shiny floors and that new hospital smell, equipment must still be upgraded and improved to ensure patients are getting the best care possible. The Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation, through its upcoming golf tournament, is looking to raise $250,000 for a new cardiac ultrasound machine. The event takes place Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. at

Technician Asad Saeed works his magic while performing a cardiac ultrasound on yours truly. Summerheights Golf Links. If you have the time I urge you to take part in the tournament and help the hospital out. From lying in that dark ultrasound room I can tell you cardiac patients are well served by the technology the hospital possesses. But a little help wouldn’t hurt either.

Police sick time buyback a ‘win-win’ deal Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings

EDITORIAL@cornwallseawaynews.com

City police officers will no longer be cashing in banked sick time for cold cash, but the city had to play banker to close the deal between the police association and police services board. With council’s stamp of approval, the city borrowed $2 million the police services board needed to purchase the banked time, also known as unfunded liability (aka money the employer doesn’t have). The board will repay the loan with money from its annual budgets. The annual payments won’t create a new drain on the budgets. Deputy Chief Danny Aikman said in past budgets money has been set aside for association members cashing in their banked sick time, usually at retirement. This money now can be used to help repay the $2 million the city borrowed on behalf of the board. A case could be made that since taxpayers fund the police service the buyback money is still coming out of the pockets of taxpayers. Police association president Sgt. Dave MacLean called the agreement a “win-win” with short-term financial pain translating into long-term gain for taxpayers while association members with a well-stocked sick time bank account reaped some pretty decent onetime payouts that didn’t take away from their accumulated sick time. Here’s how it worked: For members of the association, it meant selling half their accumulated sick time. The one-time cash outs ranged from a few thousand dollars to $60,000, depending on time accumulated which had

a direct link to tenure. The formula favoured veteran officers who hadn’t had to dip into the sick time bank over the years and was less favourable to newer members just starting to build up a sick-time account. The carrot for the association was that members did not lose any time owed. The time purchased by the board was returned to the members, a Houdini-style now you have it, now you don’t, now you do. If an association member had 2,000 hours in the sick time bank, the board purchased 1,000 hours at the current rate of pay, then returned the 1,000 hours. However, the 2,000 hours no longer carry any monetary value. The buyout deal was the reason so many association members broke through the $100,000 salary level in 2013. In all, 63 police officers and four civilian staff members cracked the $100,000 salary level. And of these, 14 made more than $150,000. Two topped $200,000. Pat Finucan, board chair, pointed out the saving for taxpayers, and it could be substantial, comes further down the road, when the $2 million loan is paid off. The savings will be far beyond the $2 million shelled out at 2013 pay rates. MacLean pointed out that members of the association do not have short-term disability plans, something that greatly reduces the board’s annual insurance costs. To bridge the gap members need 1,040 banked hours to carry them through to long-term disability, if needed. With that in mind, cutting the sick time bank in half would have been a tough sell to the membership, especially those with many years of service ahead of them. The deal to buy half the sick time and return it sans cash value was, as the saying goes, the icing on the cake. Without it, the city would have continued to be on the hook for millions of

dollars in unfunded liability. It is like the commercial that said, “You can pay me now, or pay me (a lot more) later.” Or as police association prez MacLean said, it is a winner ... for both sides. HERE & THERE Willie Wise’s lawyer and the District Attorney’s office in San Francisco said to be working at coming up with a plan for the Wise Guy to repay the $127 million he stiffed investors for. Some lost their life savings while he played fast and loose with their money on the fast lane of life. Dream on. Dream on. ... A cynic might believe that the reason city council pushed through a sizeable salary increase for the next council (which will be mostly the old council) was to get out in front of a provincial salary freeze the Wynne government is expected to impose in 2015. The new council can add to the increase with an annual cost-of-living hike. ... Veteran councillor Denis Carr dealing with some health issues but is expected to be in the October race. You know he’s feeling okay when he says, “About time we got together for a pint.” ... Not so certain is Bernadette Clement who is said to be eyeing the federal Liberal nomination in 2015. And if not that, her strong ties with the upper echelon of the provincial and federal Liberal parties must have her in line for some kind of appointment. ... I know they don’t keep track of these things, but Mark McDonald must be closing in on the record for the most quoted council candidate ever. TRIVIA ANSWER Kentucky Fried Chicken first set up shop in Cornwall at 131 Augustus St. on April 1, 1965. Oleksiuk, who went to work at Howard Smith Paper Mill after he returned to Cornwall following a stint in the New York Rangers’ organization, died two weeks ago at age 84. “He was fearless,” recalled former senior puckster Gary Grant. ... Moe Racine was among the former Rough Riders on hand for the Redblacks opening game at TDPlace. Racine’s No. 62 is among the retired Rider numbers. And in September, the greatest football player to come out this town will be inducted into the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame. As for the Redblacks, Moe is impressed with the way the club is being operated, a far cry from previous post-Rider ownerships. ... Tickets for the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner Aug. 16 at the civic complex available at Gordon’s Jewellers. SEEN & HEARD The “country boys” have had a lock on provincial representatives for ridings that have included Cornwall. You have to go back to Luc Guindon (1985-87) for somebody from Cornwall who served in Queen’s Park. Since then three mayors from neighbouring townships - John Cleary (Cornwall Township), Jim Brownell (South Stormont) and Jim McDonell (South Glengarry) - have gone to Queen’s Park. ... Thoughts and prayers go out to Cornwall Sports Hall of Famers Rob Taylor and Bob Taylor on the loss of a son and grandson. Just 26 years old. ... Terrorism hurting tourism Sultan Jessa Opinion SJESSA@SYMPATICO.CA

Terrorist organizations have found a new way to hurt peace loving countries that do not subscribe to their ideals. Nowhere is this so evident than Africa where tourism potential still remains untapped. Countries like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa just to mention a few have a tough time fighting terrorism which are hell bent on destroying Africa’s determination to spur more jobs and economic development. Many of these nations largely depend on tourism dollars. According to recent reports, terrorism attacks are succeeding in crushing Kenya’s tourism. Kenya is involved in fierce fighting with al-Shabab, the al-Qaeda-linked militia group operating out of neighbouring Somalia. Tourism in Kenya generated more than

$1-billion in foreign currency earnings for East Africa’s biggest economy. Terrorism and fears of terrorism attacks has largely succeeded in bringing tourism on its knees. Many countries, including Britain, Germany, the United States, Australia and even Canada, has been advising its citizens to keep away from countries where are prone to be attacked by terrorist groups. A decline in much-needed tourism dollars has hit Kenya’s coastal areas the hardest. Tourism is Kenya’s second largest foreign currency earner after tea exports. This was the situation when I worked in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Terrorist attacks are on the rise in Kenya. The situation has been relatively calm in neighbouring Tanzania and Uganda. But, there is no guaranty it will remain so for a long time. Recently a German woman was shot dead in Kenya’s coast. This was quickly followed by the murder of a female Russian tourist. In the worst incident, violence claimed

Letters to the Editor

the lives of 60 residents of the coastal town of Mpeketoni. The situation along the coast is so bad that hotels are registering 40 per cent occupancy rate and half the usual bookings. Kenya is not alone in this ordeal. Important growth economies in many parts of Africa are facing some of the world’s most extreme terrorist threats. These threats are

sounding the alarm for investors and tourists. Africa accounts for 15 per cent of the world’s population yet received about three per cent of world tourism receipts. More has to be done to put an end to terrors by terrorist groups, particularly in Africa. Western nations have to help Africa in the fight against terrorism.

Manley slams ‘partisan’ tax guide Dear editor: I recently picked up the Tax Guide at our local post office, published by our MP Guy Lauzon. Most tax measures in the guide are OK, some implemented by the previous Liberal government, and others adopted by the current Conservative government. Otherwise, the document is a disgusting partisan rag paid by our tax dollars. If Guy

Lauzon paid for this from Conservative Party funds, then fine, but the document does not say that. It would be appropriate for the Department of Finance or the Canada Revenue Agency to publish a non-partisan tax guide for circulation in post offices and other public locations. But this thing says “Conservative” in almost every paragraph. It makes me wonder has

opposition MPs can publish a tax guide for their constituents, who have access to the same tax measures. Take Page 11: “By supporting the job creators, our Conservative Government is staying focused on jobs and the economy”. That would be a fine, although debatable, statement in an election campaign, but it has no place in public document from the government

of Canada. It is akin to the Government of Canada using the Conservative logo on symbolic checks for news events, which was common practice a few years ago until a public outcry pushed the government to shelve that practice. Conservative MPs need to stop using public funds for partisan purposes. Tom Manley, Berwick ON

Eye care specialist renovates Sydney Street office adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario A local ophthalmologist has a new vision for eye care in the city. Dr. Tarek Youssef welcomed several guests, including MP Guy Lauzon, into his newly renovated full service eye care centre at 127 Sydney Street during its grand opening on Friday, July 18. Youssef has been practising in Cornwall for six years, and in his current space, Premium Vision Surgical Centres, for the last three, but the facelift has it feeling brand new. “I think Cornwall deserves this investment,” said Youssef. “Because of the expansion many patients will have more options for top of the line service.” His office, which is split into two halves, boasts several large pieces of sophisticated machinery. The first half specializes in the clinical assessment of cataracts and glaucoma, as well as small treatments, and simple laser

procedures. The new edition of the office offers refractive surgery and laser vision correction. “We can achieve even better than 20/20 vision in a significant amount of patients thanks to our top-notch machines, lasers and dedicated staff,” he said. In 2013, Youssef introduced a new treatment in Cornwall for patients who suffer from Evaporative Dry Eye disease. His new advanced treatment, called LipiFlow, treats patients with blocked meibomian glands, called meibomian gland dysfunction, by unblocking the glands and allowing them to resume the secretion of oily lipids needed for a healthy tear film. Youssef considers Cornwall an ideal location to run his business since its surrounded by so many larger cities and borders Quebec and New York. Many of his staff members were on hand to welcome guests into the facility and share a mini-buffet of finger foods and desserts. For more information, contact Dr. Tarek Youssef’s office at (613) 933-9100 or visit www.premiumvisionsc.com.

Quaint market place features area artist, and more Roxanne Delage ROXANNEDELAGE@GMAIL.COM

CORNWALL, Ontario - In the middle of its third summer season as a charming marketplace, along the peaceful Raisin River, the Martintown Mill Market is certainly proof positive as to what a dedicated group of citizens can do when they band together for a cause. Housed in the 167 year old Martintown Mill, which was, only a few years ago, in a grave state of dilapidation, the weekly Sunday market features a variety of artists and artisans on exhibit, as well as a farmers market. “We’ve had just about every type of artist, painter, photographer, wood carver, potter, and jewelry maker,” said Barbara Bracken, artist coordinator, Martintown Mill Conservation Society. A meet-and-greet, where the artists stay all day to talk to the public about their work, an effort is made to show a diverse selection of creations and mediums week after week, she explained. Applications for exhibitors are still

being accepted for this season. A new component, this year, some of the artists will be offering up the secrets to their trade, with workshops, such as creative things to do with a gourd, by “Gourdtimes,” coming soon. There will be a nominal fee for workshops, to cover costs and materials. Other fundraising efforts for this year will include a pig roast, to be held on Saturday, September 6, from 4:30 to 7:00, at The Grand Hotel, just a few doors up from the mill. “What money comes in supports the mill,” said Bracken. “We get no grants or anything like that. We want keep the lights on, the snow plowed and repairs made.” The Martintown Mill market is open Sundays, from 9 to 4, until September 21st. To become a featured artist, or for any further information about workshops, memberships or other, please call Barbara Bracken, 613347-2540, or visit the Martintown Grist Mill Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ MartintownMill.

Scotiabank helps Tagwi

Kuhn receives SLC bursary Aaron Kuhn, who has been a tireless volunteer for the Cornwall office of the Boys and Girls Club, has been presented with a $1,000 bursary to study social service work at St. Lawrence college. Among his efforts, Kuhn introduced longboarding to members of the Boys and Girls Club and schooled them on safety, while also raising money via lacrosse and ball hockey tournaments. The bursary comes from the St. Lawrence College Foundation. He is joined by Boys and Girls Club youth program and colunteer co-ordinator Kaitlyn Bergland.

Despite being from a small rural school, The Tagwi Players have shown once again that they are big on talent. This year’s production of the hilarious farce, John Chapman and Michael Pertwee’s “Holiday Snap,” ran from June 3-5 at Tagwi, culminating in a dinner theatre catered by Quinn’s Inn and sponsored by the Maxville Branch of Scotiabank, who generously picked up where the Avonmore branch left off, donating $1,325.

UCDSB Student Senate: 2013/14 Year in Review

UCDSB Student Senate: 2013/14 Year in Review The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Student Senate wrapped up another incredibly successful school year – one that focused on strategies to improve and promote school leadership, culture, and learning throughout the board, as well as capturing the student voice. The Student Senate, which is made up of two student leaders from each of the UCDSB secondary schools, met three times throughout the school year to talk about important topics and issues that are relevant to student life, and to share ideas about how to make their school experience even better.

Each meeting, student senators participated in Family of Schools discussions, and listened to an update from UCDSB student trustee Tyler Harbers. He would lead the group in discussion and activities, as well as introduce guest speakers. This year, student senators had the opportunity to meet a number of guest speakers including: David K. Thomas, UCDSB Director of Education who spoke of the importance of student leadership and involvement in the schools as well as after high school. He

spoke of how leadership is much more than just telling others what to do. Carla Vanderhelm, Training Coordinator and Tim Martin, Data Centre Administrator spoke to Senate regarding Microsoft Lync, and the many tools available to students to communicate and promote student leadership. Calvin and Chris from Harvest House Ministries, spoke about their experiences of going through a drug addiction and rehabilitation. They shared what drove each of them to the point of addiction, and how Harvest House Ministries helped them to

become sober. In April 2014 Student Senate elected their student trustee for the 2014-2015 year, grade 11 student Shayla Kroeze from Rothwell-Osnabruck. “Throughout the year we all learned a lot about leadership and how we can direct leadership towards helping others and making sure everyone in our schools is supplied with the proper educational experience they deserve.” said Harbers. “I hope the senators take away as much from this experience as I have and I wish Shayla the best in her role as Student Trustee.”

2014 class of Cornwall Hall of Fame Todd Lihou

todd.lihou@tc.tc

The 2014 class of Cornwall Hall of Fame athletes induction night is set for Saturday night August 16 at the Civic Complex. The preparation for the dinner is rolling along and this year’s class is a worthy lot. Several years ago, we tried to move the Hall to the brand new Benson Centre and that didn’t quite get the love we had hoped. It’s tough to live in the basement of the

Complex, but the reality is, many towns don’t even have a hall to display the pictures and names of the greats of their sporting communities. One thing that we have always tried to do, was find a a way to display our artifacts and memorabilia. A few years ago when the Bob Turner Memorial Center’s fate was sealed, I wondered what would become of the cabinets in the lobby, especially the Oak display that belonged to Cornwall Minor Hockey.

There was no possibility that the cabinets would move to the Benson Center with the CMHA, there simply was no room for the big display and as long as the Hall of Fame took charge of their removal, the CMHA would donate them. Enter city Parks and Recreation manager Christie Lefebvre. Carefully, city carpenters dismantled and removed the showcases and stored them for the Hall of Fame. In the spring of this year, the cabinets were installed and recently, we were able to

fill them up with some of the sports history that had been stored away in boxes for years. The Hall of Fame intends to add more displays in the future and we are always looking for sports related memorabilia to display. If you have old gloves, bats, sticks, sweaters, ticket stubs, programs and just about anything from yesteryear, drop me a line at thom_ racine@hotmail.com - Until then, drop downstairs on your next trip to the Complex and check out our new addition.

How to read greens like a pro Ball speed is critical in putting. The factors affecting speed are (1) the type of grass you’re putting on, (2) the direction the grass is growing, and (3) the moisture of the grass. Wet greens tend to slow a ball down. Fast greens tend to drift the ball away from the hole. Reading a green correctly—accounting for how these factors affect your putt— helps you determine not only the speed of a putt but also the direction. To sharpen your skill at this technique, we recommend developing

slope. It will also give you clues about the putt’s speeds * Stand behind the ball to make a final decision on the putt’s direction and speed. When you stand above the ball, your perspective changes, as does your impression of the line. Behind the ball is the best place to take a final look. Once you’ve made the decision, don’t change it. In addition, here’s a few putting tips I always highlight in my golf instruction: watch the roll of another player’s ball, don’t underestimate the break on a putt, and pay attention to the influence of the wind and dampness. Watching another player’s ball, especially if he or she has a similar shot, provides hints on how the ball rolls. Sometimes, it even provides you with a near perfect line. Also, miss a break on the high side of the hole not the low. That way the ball has at least a chance of rolling in. And it doesn’t roll as far away from the hole on the high side as it does on the low. In addition, a strong wind affects the speed and direction of the ball as does dampness. So factor these elements in. A ball rolls a lot slower on wet grass than on dry grass. Finally, watch the ball if it goes by the whole. Don’t turn away in anger. There’s little feedback before and during a putt, so you can’t check your reading accuracy until after you hit the ball. Key questions you need to ask yourself are: Did it have the right direction? Did it have the right speed? Did it have the right on line? Answering these questions is crucial to improving your ability to read greens and sink more putts. And doing that, as my golf lessons point out, will lower your golf handicap.

To all our sponsors, thank you for helping us make this tournament the special event that it is:

a green-reading routine. Let’s look at the putting sequence before getting into specifics. First, your subconscious mind absorbs all the factors affecting ball speed and direction. Next, you decide how hard and where to hit the ball. Then, you putt. You judge the accuracy of your read by watching the putt. If it goes in, you’ve read the green correctly. If it goes by the hole, you’ve may have misread the green. My golf tips stress that experience contributes greatly to reading a green correctly. But I also recommend that you keep the following in mind as you approach a green: * Start thinking about the line of the putt as you walk to the green. The best view of the green’s slope (whether it slopes to the right or left) is from 20 yards or so away. Standing on the green can’t tell you this. If the terrain surrounding the green slopes to the right, the green probably slopes to the right. If a green slopes in the opposite direction, it creates a basin that collects water. No self-respecting landscape architect will do that. * Check from the side of the green if you have an uphill or downhill putt. You can make this judgment by standing behind the putt. The side provides the best perspective for this and for determining the speed of the ball. For downhill putts, the low side of the green offers the best perspective for judging the terrain’s slope. * Stand behind the hole to judge the area around the hole. This area is crucial because a ball loses most of its speed by the time it gets to the hole. Here, the terrain can really influence the ball’s direction. * Read the green with your feet. Use your sense of balance to determine the green’s

5617788

Ever hit a putt you thought was going in only to have it drift wide right? If you have, chances are you misread the green. My golf lessons teach that reading greens takes skill, good judgment, and experience. Since there’s no formula for determining the direction a ball must start based on the slope of the green and the distance to the hole, reading greens is key to sinking more putts. And sinking more putts, as my golf tips emphasize, produces a lower golf handicap. Let’s talk about ball speed for a second.

Cornwall Girls Hockey Association 2014/2015 Season In Person Registration Thursday August 14, 5:00pm-7:00pm Benson Centre Registration is ongoing till divisions are full

The Cornwall Optimist Minor Softball League recently held its year-end playoff tournament. In the Major Division, the Pirates won their playoff tournament. They were also regular season champs. It was an excellent team-earned championship with all players hitting and fielding well beyond their young ages. In the final game against the Blue Jays, the score was tied 6 to 6 in the bottom of the fifth and final inning. Trying to avoid extra innings, Kaedyn Martin got a one out walk followed by a Liam Brunet single. With runners on first and second, Adam Slaney hit the

game-winning 3-run home run to end the game. It was Adam’s third home run of the playoff tournament. Incredible pitching was a big key to winning the playoff tournament. Savannah Michaud started all games and was very strong limiting

the opponents to very few base runners and striking out many. Savannah also had two home runs in the playoff tournament. In all the games both Jett Joseph and Kaedyn Martin pitched in relief and helped seal the wins.

Brakes Tim Houle Auto Talk

Your vehicle’s most critical system is its brakes. Many people never look at the master cylinder until they have brake failure. In late-model vehicles, the master cylinders are often made of semi-opaque plastic that allows inspecting the fluid level without taking off the cover, as is the case with castiron master cylinders. In addition to checking fluid level, look for leaks where the brake lines attach to the master cylinder and where the master cylinder bolts to the power booster. If you see signs of brake fluid, tighten the fittings using a line wrench on brake-line nuts to prevent against rounding off their shoulders. If the master cylinder is leaking at the rear, replace it. In the interest of safety, periodically

get under the vehicle and inspect the rubber hoses that go to the wheels for excessive wear or cracks; replace these hoses as necessary. Finally, check brake shoes and/or caliper pads regularly. Worn pads can damage the brake rotor or drum, turning a simple maintenance job into an expensive replacement procedure. For vehicles with disc brakes, replace the pads with whatever style the manufacturer recommends.

Cake Decorator’s Paradise It is with great sadness I had to close the store permanently effective March 28th, 2014. I would like to thank everyone who had a chance to visit the store at both our locations. The success of the business for those 24 ½ years was thanks to you. You made those years enjoyable for me with the cakes for all occasions. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yours truly, Hélène Bombardier

Wastewater treatment facility online in Iroquois CORNWALL, Ontario - Thanks to a funding partnership between Canada, Ontario and the Municipality of South Dundas, the Iroquois Wastewater Treatment Plant is fully upgraded and operational. After two years of construction, the facility now provides a secondary treatment process, which improves the quality of wastewater effluent released

into the nearby St. Lawrence River. Also, with a larger overall capacity, the plant is now able to significantly reduce the amount of untreated wastewater discharged during wet weather conditions. “Important projects like this one significantly impact the quality of life for local residents,” said MP Guy Lauzon. “Thanks to these improvements, the Iroquois Wastewater Treatment Plant

will now have the capacity to support this growing community while preserving the St. Lawrence River ecosystem for years to come.” Not only does the upgraded plant better protect the environment and ensure the health and safety of local residents, its increased capacity allows the Municipality of South Dundas to treat sufficient wastewater to support future

Black & White

growth. We are also promoting ecologic sustainability of the St. Lawrence River by improving the treatment of wastewater. Without our partners, this would not have happened,” said Mayor Steven Byvelds. Both the province and the federal government spent $9 million each on the project, while South Dundas forked over $62,000.

Decades after Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope, people around the world continue to run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Mark your calendars for the Terry Fox Run in Cornwall at the Civic Complex on Sunday, Sept. 14. HOla AMIGOS

Kudos to Mocktails in Lamoureux Park for making it cool to be corny again. Don’t miss the return of CornFest from Aug. 15-17. Pet Tip of the Week: People sometimes think that in a cottage setting, pets can be allowed to run at large. The truth is that many of these pets become lost, are hit by cars or get into fights. Feeling the heat? For your health, consume at least six glasses of water a day. It’s the best way to quench your thirst. Be careful with BBQ brush bristles. You don’t want to get it in your food and end up swallowing it. Clean your grill before and after you cook. Wash your grill with soap and water and use olive oil before putting food on the grill. This will clear it from any bristles and keep your food from sticking. The Cornwall, Ontario municipal elections are Monday, October 27. Rony Macarone would like to be considered for a city council seat.

SINKS Sharon Fortier

owner/operator shar’s private cleaning services

Shar’s Tip of the Week Kitchen or bathroom sinks are the most used and noticed fixture in the house. A clean sink’s biggest enemies are 1. clutter on and around it, 2. the use of abrasive cleansers that scratch it, 3. stains that have been left over time. Sinks are a cinch if cleaned right after use. Keep a white nylonbacked scrub sponge right on or by the sink. Once you’ve worked it over with this, even plain water will flush away clinging dirt.

SURGERY - FoR LittLE BoYS

Two little boys are going to the hospital the next day for operations.Theirs will be first on the schedule. The older boy leans over and asks, “What are you having done?” The second boy says,”I’m getting my tonsils out, and I’m afraid.” The reply comes.....”You’ve got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up, they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It’s a breeze.” The second boy then asks, “What are you going in for?” The first boy says, “Circumcision.” The smaller boy replies. “Whoa!, good luck, buddy. I had that done when I was born. Couldn’t walk for a year.”

Drivers, Please Pay Attention! Even though the four-way “stop” signs have been operational at the intersection of “Cumberland and Eleventh St.” for quite a while now, there still seems to be a lot of motorists not stopping. Drivers, be cautious before proceeding through the intersection to make sure the other drivers are going to make a full stop. Better safe than sorry!

Get your kids to eat their vegetables … Run frozen peas under hot tap water (don’t cook them). Kids love the way the peas “pop” in your mouth.

OPEN 7AM - NOON ~ FREE PARKING A friend of mine, also a fledgling cook, explained how his eyes had watered when he sliced onions. Trying to be helpful, I told him his eyes wouldn’t tear if he cut the onions under water. “Well, yes,” he said, “but how do you breathe?”

A lake boat travelling downriver to Montreal through the Cornwall Canal at the Augustus Street foot bridge in the early 1950s. All that remains of the pedestrian bridge today is one of the piers. To learn more about the history of Cornwall’s waterfront, plan to visit the Cornwall Community Museum and view the exhibit on the waterfront now on display. Admission to the museum is free, it is open daily 10 to 4 pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Thought of the Week: The key to getting ahead is setting aside eight hours a day for work and eight hours a day for sleep – and making sure they’re not the same hours. How to keep more money in your pocket • Reuse dishpan or bathtub water on garden beds. Leave the dishpan under the faucet to catch water whenever you rinse your hands or sponge off a countertop. • Bring your own shopping bag(s) to the store. (If you are a clever seamstress, make colourful sacks from scraps of fabric.) Some grocery stores give you a 5-cent credit for each one of your own that you use. • Use vegetable scraps (broccoli stalks, celery greens, cauliflower centers, etc.) to make vegetable stock for soups. Freeze the stock until you are ready to use it. • Wash glass jars and plastic food containers and reuse to store leftovers, lunches and so forth instead of buying containers, bags and wrap.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Zombies will fill McMaze, north of Cornwall, later this summer - but fear not, it’s just for fun. The second annual Zombie Run in support of the United Way of Stormont Dundas and Glengarry will be held Sept. 6 at McMaze, in St. Andrews West. Sherry Davis, the new program and event co-ordinator for the local United Way, said the hope is to attract more competitors this year to an already-popular event. “Last year we had 75 runners,” she said. “We’re hoping for 100 this year.”

The 5 km run/obstacle course will begin at 9 a.m. All participants are asked to raise a minimum of $50 in pledges to participate; a gift will be awarded to the individual who collects the most pledges. The United Way is also recruiting Zombies for this fun run. For more information or to register please contact Sherry at 613-932-2051 or e-mail events@unitedwaysdg.com. The event will help raise funds for the 2014 United Way campaign, which will be officially kicked off days after the run with a breakfast. The United Way of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry assists 16 agencies (19 programs) throughout the region.
