CORNWALL, Ontario – Eric Duncan made history at last Friday’s United Counties council meeting – but he had a little bit of luck on his side, too. Duncan becomes the first warden in the history of the upper-tier municipality to serve consecutive terms as warden. In a counties council vote he and North Glengarry Deputy Mayor Jamie MacDonald were tied at six votes each after two rounds of balloting. His name was finally drawn from a hat by county clerk Helen Thompson. “It’s humbling,” Duncan said of making history. “I’ve enjoyed the opportunity. I know government will never be perfect. “(But) to have the opportunity to make changes and tweak what we do…it’s a great feeling.” Duncan said the United Counties has worked to improve relationships with its regional partners in the last year, including its six member townships, as well as the City of Cornwall. He suggested areas like economic development, especially when it comes to working with the city, will be important as 2015 looms. “Mayor (Leslie) O’Shaughnessy has made

some positive comments about working more with the counties,” he said. “Economic development, tourism – those are areas we need to work on.” Gone are the days when those who talked about more collaboration among municipalities were in the minority, the North Dundas mayor added. “Considering where we were about 10 years ago, the idea of working together more was a negative,” he said. “Now people see the value of more collaboration.” Townships within the United Counties worked this year to improve upon sharing their own resources, especially when it came to workplace health and safety policies, as well as emergency preparedness. “Everyone was coming up with their own plans,” said Duncan. “We’re looking at more synergies.” He said increased communication, both with the public and the media, will be a priority in United Counties Warden Eric Duncan 2015. Duncan suggested while individual town- returns to the big chair in 2015. ships have healthy social media accounts, the townships to put our via their social media conupper-tier does not. The warden said a decision will be made tacts, or create Facebook and Twitter accounts whether to keep ferrying information to the that are specific to the United Counties.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For Boston Bruins fanatics dressed in the team’s signature black and gold colours, the nostalgia alone was worth the price of admission in Akwesasne on Saturday. The Bruins Alumni team defeated the Akwesasne Mohawks 10-6 in a hard fought match, hosted by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA), at the A’nowara’ ko:wa arena in front of 1,000 fans. Sporting matching toques with the trademark B emblem, Norman Herne and his daughter Julie cheered their favourite former NHLers. The lineup included Ray Bourque, John Wensink, Terry O’Reilly, Rick Middleton, Bob Sweeney, Bruce Shoebottom, Bruce Crowder, Tim Sweeney, Jay Miller, Tom Fergus, Reggie Lemelin, Ken Linseman, and Rick Smith, coached by Brian Goodleaf. “I’ve been a Bruins fan for all my life,” said Herne, 52. “I used to watch them on TV and now I actually get to see them.” To help capture the moment he brought a collection of vintage hockey cards to be signed after the game. During the warm-up, Julie listened intently as her dad pointed out players and recalled their greatest triumphs on the ice. “I’m glad I got the opportunity to experience this with him,” she said. Bruins royalty Ray Bourque, arguably one of

the best defenceman of all time, spoke with Seaway News moments before the puck dropped. He explained why after 13 years of retirement he still loves the game. “Hockey is still fun to play - we still go out there to have fun and compete,” said Bourque. “We also have a great following. Hockey has given me a lot and we get to raise a lot of money.” Dozens of young fans waited eagerly beside the dressing room doors before the Bruins arrived - and when they finally did, the excitement was contagious. It reminded Bourque about growing up in Montreal and dreaming of being a Canadien, before he embarked on a 22-year career. “I love meeting people who are really into the sport,” he said. His advice to future hockey stars in training focused on strengths both on and off the rink. “You should be playing because you love the game...and if you’re going to play, work hard,” said Bourque. “When you do that, you might end up somewhere special.” Last year, MCA hosted a similar event featuring Habs alumni. Former Cornwall Royal and Akwesasne resident Mark Thomas has played in both games. To prepare for this match the Mohawks held four scrimmages on home ice. The roster was also cut in half to 14 players. “I grew up watching a lot of these NHL legends so sharing the rink is an amazing experience,” said Thomas.

frustration with Frost and some of his public comments concerning the team. A collection of other volunteers who did not want to give their names to Seaway News, said frustration is bordering on anger. “I volunteered at barbecues this summer. I won’t put up with this (expletive),” said one man wearing a River Kings t-shirt. After the council meeting Frost suggested the fans could have good news soon. He said a new

owner for the team will be announced soon by the league. As for the people who showed up Monday night? “I don’t know why they came tonight. It’s a council meeting,” he said. Control of the River Kings was recently acquired by the Ligue Nord-Americaine de Hockey. The team lost an 8-0 stinker on Saturday, and had its Sunday away game cancelled.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Coun. Brock Frost was escorted from city hall Monday night by plainclothes police officers after frustrated hockey fans filled the council chambers looking for answers. Frost did not request the escort, but was urged by police to take advantage of their offer in the interests of safety, Seaway News was told. The hockey fans, perhaps a dozen or so, sat stoically during Monday night’s meeting, but in interviews outside the council chambers there was frustration. Frost, the former owner of the Cornwall River Kings semi-pro hockey team, is facing a barrage of criticism in many circles for his handling of the team that is in the midst of another ownership change. “I just want to get a point across,” said Robert

MacFarlane, a self-professed “hardcore fan” of the Kings. “I have questions for Brock Frost and the mayor too.” MacFarlane and other fans want the city to negotiate a deal with the Kings that will allow BROCK FROST for more revenue-generating opportunities like concessions and rinkboard advertising. The lion’s share of the revenue opportunities within the Cornwall Civic Complex are controlled by the Junior A Colts, which signed a deal in good faith years ago with the city. “Of course they have struggled,” lamented MacFarlane of a litany of River Kings owners - four in just two years - including Frost. “It’s not just blaming Brock.” But MacFarlane and other fans voiced

Council may green-light audio recording of in-camera meetings

City committee members may have to be screened by police

Todd Lihou

CORNWALL, Ontario - City council is exploring a return to recording the comments made by members during in-camera meetings. Coun. Andre Rivette said Monday during a council session that it may be time to return to the practice that was terminated in 2006. Rivette said the audio would offer a better tool for keeping a record of the comments made during in-camera meetings. Minutes are kept from such meetings, but unlike open sessions of city council there is no

CORNWALL, Ontario - City hall could soon require members of municipal committees undergo a police background check before being approved for their role. Councillors David Murphy and Maurice Dupelle agreed committees that deal with vulnerable persons, including the youth advisory committee, should be screened. The city may have the cart before the horse a little bit, given that volunteers looking to sit on committees had to submit their names last week without being asked to have their background screened by police. “In the private world, when you’re going on 5776863

electronic recording of the proceedings. Rivette suggested using the same technology that records open meetings for recording the in-camera sessions. Jon King, a provincial representative from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, told council members at a recent orientation session that it might be worth the effort to investigate the reason the recordings were stopped. “That might provide some answers to you as a council,” he said. The previous city council came under fire for holding too many in-camera council meetings and was chastized by an outside investigator to that end.

a field trip or coaching...in most cases you need a criminal background check and in my estimation we should be no different,” said Murphy. Dupelle, who sits on the youth committee, agreed the city should change its policy. “We have an obligation as a city to do our due diligence,” he said. But Coun. Claude McIntosh wondered if the city was reaching too far. “it’s hard to impose it,” he said. “I’m really wondering if we need someone to do a background check if they’re going to sit on the goose committee.” Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy pointed out committees, like the goose control comittee, are under review and could be eliminated.

It wasn’t your typical crowd at the South Stormont Community Hall on Sunday, Dec. 7. High school students from Germany, Mexico, China, and Korea enjoyed a traditional potluck dinner/gift exchange as a DJ pumped out radio hits. Meanwhile, some students were out helping the local fire department with their annual boot drive. Their connection to SD&G stems from a partnership between Canada Homestay Network and the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). Laura Christina, of Brazil, and Susana Torres, of Columbia, had plenty of great things to say about Avonmore’s Laurie and

Shawn McAlear, their “second family.” “We’re having so much fun,” said Christina. “Everyone is so nice here.” The McAlears have been a host family for the last four years. With all five of their own children living across Ontario, having new additions in the household filled a void. “They keep us young,” said Shawn. Both Christina and Torres agreed that embracing a Canadian winter is no easy task. But they’re up for skating, snowflakes, snowmen, maple taffy, and tobogganing. On weekends, the foursome has travelled across the province, visiting tourism staples in Niagara Falls and Toronto, as well as taking camping trips. Two weeks before Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down while standing guard at the National War Monument in Ottawa, they were there on a visit to the nation’s capital. Tree-killing ash borer is sinking its teeth into Cornwall TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - It could cost homeowners in Cornwall hundreds of dollars to help defend against a tree-killing insect that has the Seaway City in its cross hairs. Scott Porter, the city’s arborist, said in an interview the vicious Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is already plaguing Cornwall, mostly in the Ninth and Marlborough area of the city. The insect is a non-native wood-boring beetle that has been plaguing forests in North America, killing millions of trees. The insect lays eggs just below the bark layer and when the larvae hatch they begin to feed on parts of the tree that conduct nutrients – resulting in its death. City hall has set aside some $800,000 to deal with problem via a low-grade insecticide, Treeazin, that is injected into trees and disrupts the EAB’s lifecycle – prohibiting it from reproducing. It’s good news for the ash trees on city property, which are being inoculated over the next two years.

But trees on private party are not part of the city’s plans - so homeowners will have to pony up the money to protect them. “It costs about $5 a cm...of the tree’s diameter,” Porter said in an interview prior to a city open house on the subject Wednesday. “It could be $300 or $400 a tree.” And homeowners looking to save their trees may have little choice but to spend some money, either via pesticides or having the trees removed, because every ash in the city will be targeted by the EAB. “It doesn’t distinguish between white ash, green ash or black ash,” said Porter. “It will go after all of them.” Treeazin cannot be purchased in stores. An arborist or other expert must be retained by homeowners. SANTA SHUFFLE:

Raising funds on the run ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - On a chilly December morning, Santa Claus and his elves laced up for a fun run across Cornwall to help raise over $5,000 for the Salvation Army. More than 150 participants lined up at St. Lawrence College for the first local edition of the Santa Shuffle and Elf Walk on Dec. 6. Oren Cole, Salvation Army pastor, described the event, one of many Shuffles across Canada, as a way for families to have fun, get outdoors, and support a good cause. “We’re here to raise funds for our work in the community as we fight back against poverty,” said Cole. The Santa Shuffle stretched 5 kilometres and the Elf walk/run for kids was 1 kilometre. The Salvation Army teamed up with The

Running Room and the Cornwall Multisport Club to bring the popular fitness fundraiser to the city. A member of the Cornwall Multisport Club and Cornwall Cycling Club, Alexandria’s Yvon Duval finished fourth overall, completing the trek in 23 minutes and 18 seconds. “I didn’t feel like running today, but it’s for the Salvation Army so I came anyways,” said Duval. He added that nearly 50 club members also participated for a chance to improve their time and collect points for marathons. In the iconic red suit, Nick Vida, 15, darted across the finish line. His father, Thomas Vida, dressed as a giant teddy bear, followed shortly after. “It was important to be here as a family to help bring a little holiday cheer to everyone on the course,” said Thomas.

OPINION

Well, it’s a start...

Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

One down and, uh, about 120 to go if my math is correct. City council met for its first ‘real’ meeting Monday night. As mentioned in this space last week there is a steep learning curve awaiting this bunch. But what can we take away from meeting number one? Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy runs a looser ship than his predecessor Bob Kilger. There’s no doubt he wants to effect change and things did seem a little more relaxed Monday night. Still, critics suggest the pendulum may have swung a little too far away from the rigidity of past council meetings. Monday night there were references to councillors by their first name (not just the MacDonalds), more than a few interruptions as councillors tried to speak to each other instead of through the chair, and perhaps a few too many bad jokes. But hey, it was the first one. Let’s not get too bent out of shape. I appreciate O’Shaughnessy’s desire to put his stamp on meetings at city hall, and while there is a danger that things could stray further

away from the script that is a city council agenda, as a guy who has sat through hundreds of city council meetings, I’m not overly concerned at this point. I’m not sure if I would put Kilger in the same category of some of his critics, but there was no doubt he was in charge during a council meeting. O’Shaughnessy appears to be taking a different tack. He has gone to great pains to suggest he’s just “one of the team” and prefers “Mr. Mayor” to the pomp and circumstance of “Your Worship.” Fair enough - it’s not unlike changing an NHL coach. My beloved Montreal Canadiens parted ways with Pat Burns in the early 1990s. The former cop was known for taking a hard line against players. The team hired cheerleader Jacques Demers who brought a fresh atmosphere to the team – and they won a Stanley Cup. Perhaps O’Shaughnessy’s strategy will ultimately pay similar dividends. Senior management is taking notice, with one member of the inner circle suggesting to me Monday night there’s little doubt our new mayor is passionate about creating a different atmosphere at city hall.

The other new faces around the council table made their city hall debuts Monday night. Coun. Brock Frost, thanks to the River Kings saga, took the Cornwall police up on an offer to be escorted from the building following the meeting. A source suggests to me intelligence received by the cops indicated Frost’s safety was in danger, so they walked him out. The hockey fans, perhaps a dozen or more, were a model of decorum, sitting quietly in the gallery without so much as a whimper. Frost kind of had it right – why did they show up? Just to glare at him? Coun. Carilyne Hebert had a quiet start to her political career, quite literally. I had to step out of the chambers a few times, but I don’t think she uttered one word Monday night. Methinks that won’t last long. It appears Coun. Claude McIntosh enjoys a one-liner as much as the next guy. There were more than a few groans from the gallery and press table following his terrible joke about a milking contest at the looming International Plowing Match and O’Shaughnessy being the “udder” favourite in such a contest. Like I said – it’s a different era at city hall. Coun. Justin Towndale had a quiet start too. He asked a few questions and held his own.

The other newcomer (well, kind of ), Coun. Mark MacDonald, is desperate to see the city convene a so-called strategic planning session to map out its priorities for this term in office. He mentioned it nearly every time he got up to speak Monday night. His colleagues around the table have indicated to me, privately, it’s time to “change the record, Mark.” A planning session is coming, I’m told…so MacDonald and the rest of us will just have to be patient. Monday was a pretty easy start. Aside from the hockey distraction it was a pretty low-key meeting. The heavy lifting (if you can call it that) begins Wednesday night with the rubber stamping of the new water rates for the city. The “other tax” is pegged to jump by about 1.3 per cent, costing you as much as $11 more depending on how many fixtures your home contains. Next up is the 2015 budget – which I’m told is holding steady at about a four per cent tax hike to start deliberations. It’s a manageable figure that will undoubtedly be whittled down to something more palatable to taxpayers before the document is approved.

was premier of Ontario while Joey Smallwood held sway in Newfoundland. A movie ticket cost $1.25 to see shows like Barefoot in the Park, To Sir, with Love and The Dirty Dozen. The Packers beat the Chiefs 35-18 in the first Super Bowl and Bobby Orr won his first of eight straight Norris Trophies. Expo 67 played in Montreal where Jean Drapeau was mayor. We watched the Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched and Hogan’s Heroes on TV. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles were at the top of the charts while Bob Dylan wailed about the war in Vietnam. Elvis married Priscilla. Faith Hill was born. The first heart transplant was performed in South Africa. Polaroid cameras were the rage. The average household income was $7,300, you could buy a new car for $2,700, rent a house for $120 a month and gas was 33 cents a gallon at a full-service station. Full service meaning you didn’t have to get out of your vehicle, and you filled up and got change back from a $20. Oh yes. One more thing: 1967 was the last time they had a Stanley Cup parade in Toronto. Two points if you can name the team they beat in the final. AROUND’N’BOUT Children’s Treatment Centre has a great Christmas stocking stuffer. It’s the “Hockey Road Trip” raffle - $1,000 cash, hockey tickets (for two) for three NHL games in three different cities (Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal). Transportation (Via) and hotel accommodations. Tickets are $20 each or three for $50. Contact the treatment centre.

SEEN & HEARD Pierre Karl Peladeau has purchased the Quebec City Remparts of the Quebec Junior Hockey League. If PKP follows the same cost-saving formula he used to destroy his newspapers, this could see the team reduced to two and a half lines and the end of the dressing room water cooler. .... Ever wonder why a donation to a political party reaps a much bigger tax write-off than a donation to a charitable cause? Well, not all that hard to figure out when you consider who makes the rules. ... According to one sets of stats quoted by a U.S. news agency, three times more U.S. white teens are shot and killed by police officers than black teens. ... Missing in action (MIA) are the great black civil rights leaders of the past, folks like Martin Luther King, Andrew Young, James Meredith, Charles Evers and Ralph Abernathy. They’ve been replaced by a buffoon like Al Sharpton and the hate-mongering Louis Farrakhan. ... 46 years later and I still consider the silent protest by Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the Mexico Games one of the most profound, bravest non-violent civil rights protests of all time. In the 200m final, Smith won gold and Carlos took bronze. As they stood on the victory stand and the U.S. national anthem was played, each bowed his head and thrust a black-gloved fist in the air. It was a defining moment in the civil rights movement. Today they are Dr. John Carlos and Dr. Tommie Smith.

Life as a waiter was never easy A young guy from Berwick arrived in town during the early 1950s looking for a job. Just so happened the owners of the old Central Hotel across from the police station (now a funeral home, which is the direction the bar business has taken in the last few years) were looking for a good waiter for their busy beverage room. Mel Ouderkirk took the job and turned it into a career. Now 92 (turns 93 in June), he might want to reflect on it all and count himself as a survivor. They were rough and tumble times for the bar business, especially during the Seaway days when the city was flooded with transient workers. It was not unusual for the beverage room to go through 100 kegs of draught in a week, so there was a lot of drinking going on. As a retired cop told me, “Working the night shift on the weekends in those days was like going to war ... and most times it would start on Thursday night. And you knew it was a dandy if they called the police because most places could handle it themselves.” “If you couldn’t fight, you couldn’t work (as a waiter),” said Mel. “There were no bouncers ... you soon learned who you could count on.”The secret, recalled Mel, was for everybody (bar staff ) to watch the other guy’s back. One of the toughest waiters he worked with was a chap called Lauzon. “He never took the first punch, or suckered punched anybody, but he always took the last punch,” said Mel. And big Billy

Ingram was no slouch either, said Mel. Art Gagnon wasn’t big but he was a pretty good boxer in his day and could handle himself if the situation needed some tough love. Ironically, some of the best behaved customers were the ones who had been barred from all the other hotels. “They were running out of places where they could drink,” said Mel. “So they didn’t want to get kicked out (of my bar).” He started at the Central, then owned by the Miller Furniture folks, for the princely sum of $69 a week ... a week being about 60 hours. Years later, the city’s most popular drinking spot, the Cornwallis Hotel, came calling. They reeled him in with a huge $10 a week pay increase. And his tips soared to 10 cents. A glass of draught sold for 15 cents and a customer could only order two at a time, which gave birth to the call “Two up.” Every now and then somebody will holler at Mel when he is out, “Mel ... two up.” A good waiter, Mel recalled, could carry 15 glasses on a tray without spilling a drop. There was a strict dress code in place for beverage room waiters. White shirt and bow tie. Long ties were too dangerous in a fight. Looking back, would he do it all over again? Yes, said Mel, but at 92 he thinks he might have trouble finding somebody to hire him. THE RECALL BUTTON If you are old enough, some things you might recall from 1967: Lester Pearson was our prime minister, John Diefenbaker was leader of the Opposition and LBJ was president of the U.S. John Robarts

well. And now we have an upgraded sewage plant. But over the past two years, in particular, the respect they had for each other around the table seems to have diminished. Not in all cases, but enough to be noticeable. It reduced their ability to work together on the really difficult issues. Their debates became more dissonant and, at times, not unlike dialogues among the deaf. Passion seemed to overrule logical thought and there seemed to be no clear goals. It was also noticeable that the respect between council and staff has also diminished. It’s not to the point of trench warfare, but it’s enough to strain relations, which does nothing to serve taxpayers’ interests. Of course, the whistleblower issues were the catalyst and became the defining issue for the past term. City council didn’t create the problem, but they just couldn’t handle it very effectively. The main action they did take, terminating the HR manager, wasn’t enough to end it. The reverberations continued right through the election campaign nearly three years later. They couldn’t escape the constant need for closed-door meetings, many of which dealt with legal repercussions from the original issues. Investigations of complaints from those meetings raised worrying questions about their integrity and further eroded the public’s

shared ownership of the land, with the tanks still in place. The need for confidentiality hasn’t helped, given all that has gone on before. Approving an obscene wage increase for themselves this past summer probably added the last poison pill. It sent absolutely the wrong message to local taxpayers about council’s priorities and its sense of proportion. By that time, a good majority of residents were already looking for change. The only questions that remained were who and how much change. And that’s the way I see it.

confidence. The later case of the Waterfront Committee, where the public was asked to leave a public meeting because a presenter disliked a member of that public, just fuelled suspicions that the public’s interest was secondary. The storage tanks issue also happened to them and options to do much more than they did were somewhat limited. But expectations that an experienced and well-connected mayor could get to the right people and sort things out politically were not realized and we’ve ended up in protracted negotiations for

By the time you read this, a new city council will be in office. Since it’s far too early for them to have done very much, I thought I’d take one last look back at the old council and where things went wrong. They were a fairly good group to begin with. Every one of them was certainly dedicated to their role, although they differed somewhat on their approach to it and on their priorities. That, in itself, should be quite healthy because it can bring a good diversity of issues and concerns to the table. They accomplished a number of good things over their term. While we may complain about taxes, city spending was kept under control and taxes were kept within the limits of inflation, despite some significant spending pressures. That was an improvement over previous councils. Financially, the city is in excellent shape with a healthy balance sheet, some solid reserves, very little debt and the Progress Fund still intact. Quite a few new businesses have located here, which has helped the local economy and has noticeably reduced some of the pressure on residential taxes. Property standards are being addressed to remove some of the eyesores around town, which affect property values and lead to potential safety or fire risks as

CORNWALL, Ontario - Vietnam Cultural Day immersed more than 50 people in the aromas, sounds, colours, tastes, and history of a diverse country. Ha Luong, one of 18 Canada World Youth volunteers who have spent the last two months in Cornwall, showcased Vietnamese traditions at the Nav Centre on Sunday, Dec. 7. Guests enjoyed ‘nem,’ otherwise known as spring rolls, with tea, an ‘ao dai’ (Vietnamese long dress) fashion show, traditional performances, games, food, and some left with a souvenir. “It’s a community event for people to experience our culture,” said Luong. He boasts that Vietnam’s 4,000-year history has seen 54 diverse ethnic groups living in harmony, and has some of the healthiest cuisine in the world. Swanky holiday gala nets $39,000 for United Way adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The United Way of SD&G has received an early Christmas gift. The Corus Cares Holiday Wine and Gourmet Tastings committee announced that the event raised $39,000 for the local agency, which helped push its 2014 campaign to the 50% mark. “This is an important fundraising event for the United Way – it helps to profile and create awareness for the work they do all year long supporting 16 agencies and 19 programs,” said Angie Baker, Corus Wine Event committee

member. Over 400 guests enjoyed an assortment of wonderful wines, tasty treats, and live music in the Cornwall Civic Complex salons on Saturday, Nov. 22. Almost 100 local business sponsors rallied to make the holiday gala a record success. The Scotiabank volunteer program assisted the event by matching $5,000. Lori Greer, executive director, confirmed Tuesday that $353,535 of its $707,070 goal has been reached. TC Media and Seaway News were also proud sponsors of United Way’s signature event.

Scotiabank team members Diane Dupuis, Kimberly Simpson, Sue van Loenen and Sheila Youmelle were on-hand along with Scotiabank manager Tina Lamarche to present the matching donation to Pat Clarke - Wine Event chair, Lori Greer – United Way executive director, Angie Baker and Peter Mahew – Corus Entertainment, and Rick Shaver – TC Media Cornwall general manager.Submitted photo

SUE AND TOM McGILLIS – From them comes a story of near tragedy, survival, courage, community, hard work – and the admiration and respect a couple have for each other. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk)

A story of survival Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com

Sue McGillis and her husband Tom told me this amazing story of survival. We were relaxing comfortably in the shade of a shelter in their rural backyard, one of Tom’s many projects, when this story unfolded. It was a bitterly cold day on February 24, 2013. Sue was away in Cornwall at her teaching job; Tom was working alone in the back forty, hauling trees out of the bush. Anyone who’s worked with a chainsaw knows how dangerous it can be. A 60-foot cedar fell the wrong way, landing on Tom’s tractor and pinning him against it, severely injuring him. He had a broken pelvis, an open fracture of his thigh and torn knee ligaments. Thinking fast, he applied a makeshift dressing of ice and snow to staunch the bleeding. Frostbite was setting in. It took Tom three hours to crawl out of the remote accident site to a telephone in the sugar bush shack. By a stroke of luck, years before he had laid the phone cable underground. As he was dragging himself to the shack, a medevac helicopter flew over, but it was not for him. It was on another mission. However, Tom was eventually taken to Ottawa by a later medevac flight. The near-tragedy spawned another story: the caring qualities of the people in their lives. An important part of what Sue wanted to share was the amazing support from their community. One of Tom’s hospital nurses was one of her own former students Neighbours and relatives checked in on Tom often, bringing home-cooked meals, providing rides to Ottawa for his extensive therapy sessions and welcome company, allowing Sue to continue meeting her teaching responsibilities. Then Sue added, “There’s more to Tom’s story. He’s a human machine; he doesn’t quit. He harvests about 100 cords of wood each year, even now, after his accident. He’s even made a firewood splitter out of parts he’s cobbled together. He’s planted 1,500 pines for the future. Just look at all the things around us. That’s all his work. My Tom can do anything!”

In a split second, Mrs. Giroux was back in that classroom, she was thrilled to see her young face again and her boys, her first ever class at St. Albert school. Stella Giroux had seen the picture before, but it was lost many years ago in a fire. Seeing it again, on the pages of one of her first pupils book, made

her day. What were the chances of that, what were the chances that Stella at age 95 would still be alive to tell that story. Stella thanked me several times, but Stella it is you that needs to be thanked. Thank you for making my day and you can expect that tall skinny kid to drop by and see you. That should be, another moment in time.

On Dec. 1, I held a book launch at Shoeless Joe’s for the release on my father’s memoir - My dad was suddenly hospitalized a few hours ahead of the launch, but we decided to go ahead as planned, he wanted it that way. While it was great to see friends and a few of his old teammates from the St. Lawrence High School Days, something happened that makes researching stories like these, so worth it. Allow me to set this up... The year was 1946, my dad was a big skinny kid, the tallest in his grade 4 class at St. Albert School on First Street in Cornwall’s east end. Miss Houle was only 19 that year and it was her first year teaching. By the end of the year, Stella Houle would be known as Mrs. Giroux. During the research for our memoir, I received a picture of that class, it included the last names of most of the kids (all boys) and right in the middle at the back was Mrs. Giroux. Also in the back row was the tall skinny kid, Maurice Racine. I included the picture in the book, because it

just needed to be included, it really was a moment in time. Monday morning, about a half hour after we started the book sales, an elderly woman came into the restaurant, with her daughter at her side, they made their way towards me. I heard the woman ask her daughter, where is Maurice? I explained dad’s sudden situation, there was a second or two of disappointment and then this wonderful lady began to tell me a story. “I was Maurice Racine’s teacher a long time ago in 1946-47 at St. Albert school, I had to tell him to be quiet and sometimes to listen in class, but he was not a bad boy. At recess, we played baseball and the other kids would be so upset at Maurice, because he would hit the ball out of the school yard and into the bush behind the school. Later, when he played football, I often watched and told everyone, that I was his teacher.” As I listened, my mind wandered to that old picture, she did say - St Albert School, she did say Grade 4 in 1946-47 and I am sure I heard her say her name was Mrs. Giroux. I grabbed a book and turned to page 9 and with one flick of my wrist

If roses grow in Heaven, Lord, please pick a bunch for us. Place them in our Mother’s arms and tell her they’re from us. Tell her that we love and miss her and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while. Because remembering her is easy, we do it every day. But there is an ache within our heart that will never go away. We wish we had the chance to say – We love you and miss you each and every day.

Glass doors are a convenient additon but can quickly cloud up with soap scum. For some heavy-duty cleaning, try: Shaving cream: Squirt on the foam and wipe clean; the foam will leave a light film that keeps the doors from fogging and makes it harder for scum to stick. White vinegar: Keep a spray bottle in the shower so you can make washing down the surfaces part of your post-shower routine. Baking soda: Make a solution of 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup baking soda. Then scrub with a sponge. A small amount of vegetable oil poured onto a sponge or paper towel and applied to the doors after cleaning will prevent a buildup reoccuring.

At this particular point in December, do you have any serious doubts that you will be fully prepared when Christmas morning arrives? You may wonder if all the cleaning, decorations, gifts, and food will be ready for the big day. The level of your physical energy may not be keeping pace with the level of your emotional enthusiasm or your psychological expectations. Could I suggest to you a key element in preparing well for this festive season? To keep your mind from slipping and your spirit from sagging, I would recommend that you give due diligence to preparations of the heart. If you are in agreement with me so far, then please take some precious moments for quiet meditation to focus on the reason for the season – Jesus Himself! Read from the New Testament accounts about the birth of Christ in Luke (chapters 1and 2), and Matthew (chapters 1and 2). Attend a sacred concert that is presenting the true meaning of Christmas. Think of, pray for, and give to people you know who are struggling financially at this time of year. Make up a Christmas food hamper for a family or a shoe box filled with items which a boy or a girl could practically use. Help out at the local soup kitchen, give money or donate things to a mission organized to help the needy in the community. Phone or visit a lonely person. Seek to lift people’s spirits, boost their hope, and renew their faith in the Lord!

Former mayor Bob Kilger related to us recently the first year he began refereeing in the NHL was the last year Montreal Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau played in the league. “Everything that was said about him being a gentleman was true. On the ice and off,” said Kilger. Beliveau passed away last week.

Note to the individuals who submitted pictures for the Remembrance Day feature that ran Caller and many others, would like to know in our newspaper on Nov. 6. You may stop by why gas is only .95 cents a litre in Ottawa and our office at 501 Campbell St. Unit #6 during still $1.06 in Cornwall? Also, why is diesel still at office hours to pick them up. Thank You! $1.26 per litre when it costs much less to refine? It is a shame especially with oil at $66 a barrel. Cereal drive The Cornwall & District Horticultural Society helped the Children’s Christmas Fund Cereal Drive kick off their yearly campaign during their Annual General Meeting and Potluck. The members generously donated 67 boxes of cereal and $344.50 to assist in purchasing milk. As well, a cheque for $983 was presented to Theresa Taylor.
