Wednesday night council needs to hear from experts on both sides of the fluoride issue, again, before making a decision on the practice. But that raised the ire of Coun. Andre Rivette, who along with the other re-elected members of council have sat through about a half dozen presetations already on the subject. Rivette thinks it’s time for council to make a decision one way or the other, and suggested the city has already received enough information on the subject. “(Medical officer of health Dr. Paul Roumeliotis) has already made three presentations to us,” he said. “What the hell are we paying the health unit for?” O’Shaughnessy pointed out with the news faces around the council table, a refresher on the subject is required.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The fourth annual ZwithC ‘Freezin’ for a Reason’ dance/carolling fundraiser collected $1,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District. Christal Bowen led 40 of her Zumba clients from the parking lot of Blessed Sacrament Church on Tollgate Road East into the surrounding neighbourhood, as cars followed the upbeat carollers with loud music blaring into the crisp night air on Friday, Dec. 12. William General, who recently moved to Cornwall after living in Toronto for 30 years, stood in awe while the group danced off to the next home. But before they did he gladly handed over a $50 donation. “This is wonderful, it really is,” said General. “I’m glad they came.” Amanda Brisson, executive director of BBBS

of Cornwall and District, said all the money raised will go towards taking Littles, kids and teens in their program, on a first-time experience, like a skiing trip or a horseback riding lesson. Many of the youngsters were in the crowd dancing with their Bigs. “I support Big Brothers Big Sisters because it is a great organization that helps to motivate and inspire the youth of our community,” said Bowen. The Zumba pioneer in the area going seven years strong has always mixed business and philanthropy. On Dec. 22, every member who brings a toy to the annual ZwithC Gives Back Class gets in for free. Sparky and a group of firefighters will also make a special appearance in holiday fashion. For more information on the non-profit organization, visit www.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/Cornwall.

Council green-lights River Kings rental agreement TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A pocket-sized city council rubber-stamped the latest ownership change involving the Cornwall River Kings - but not without some questions concerning the status of the team and even the arena in which it plays. Councillors and Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy had to give assent to the change because the River Kings rent space to play at the Cornwall Civic Complex. The specifics of the deal are not changing, including fees and the like, just the name on the agreement.

Cornwall recreation manager Christine Lefebvre told council the team does not owe the city any money, and like the Cornwall Colts the rental agreement it has with the city expires in April. “We’re going to sit down with both ownership groups and bring back to council a report with different options,” she said at a special council meeting Friday morning. Coun. Mark MacDonald suggested the complex itself will one day soon be in need of refurbishment because fans are getting upset. “The number one complaint is the arena itself, you cannot sit in those seats,” he said. “The overall thing needs to be looked at. We as landlords don’t have a real good facility there.

“The facility itself needs a facelift and we should be looking at that more in broader terms.” MacDonald also suggested the city should be as fair as possible to all tenants at the complex. “We don’t want the teams fighting,” he said. “We as landlords and community leaders want to provide places where we encourage participation in the community and not discourage it. And

right now that is not happening.” Critics have suggested the Colts, which signed an agreementin good faith, has an unfair advantage when it comes to lucrative in-house advertising rights at the complex. Steven Moreau recently took over the reigns of the River Kings, following the failed Brock Frost/Darren Madden switch.

CORNWALL, Ontario - One of the individuals pulled from a fire in Cornwall last week has died in an Ottawa hospital. Cornwall fire chief Richard McCullough confirmed the man, 59, died and that a postmortem is being conducted. A man and a woman had to be airlifted to an Ottawa hospital with severe injuries, due to smoke inhalation, following the fire last Wednesday evening on Lefebvre Avenue in Cornwall. Cornwall police have secured the home. “It is unclear if it is a police matter at this time and police are holding the scene pending further investigation,” the Cornwall service said in

a release. McCullough could not comment on the status of the female still battling for her life in hospital. “They were found on the floor when (firefighters) went in,” he said last Thursday. McCullough said one of the individuals had tried to take shelter under the kitchen table, while the other was found lying on the living room floor. The chief said the entire dwelling was covered in a thick, noxious smoke. “When they went in it was dark...filled with smoke,” he said. The cause of the main level blaze, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters, is being investigated. McCullough said the investigation is complete, but results are not yet known. Ten firefighters put the blaze out.

Levac will remain as CAO, delays retirement will be extremely beneficial to the new council as they embark on this term. Mr. Levac has enjoyed working as CAO for the past two years and he understands the importance of assisting the new Council during this transition period.” One of the first issues council will be tasked with is the establishment of the 2015 city budget, which will outline spending plans for city programs, services and projects in the coming year. “Mr. Levac’s presence will ensure that we have continuity when it comes time for Council to deal with the budget and other important matters,” said O’Shaughnessy. It’s still Levac’s intention to retire. He has agreed to provide a three-month notice to council prior to his retirement.

Huge pay raise to be axed CORNWALL, Ontario - A huge pay raise approved by city council prior to the October election appears to be on life support. The new city council, with five new faces, approved a motion Tuesday afternoon that shelved the raise and instead directs administrators to come up with something more palatable to both councillors and the public. For the time being council will continue to receive the same pay it got in 2014.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s top municipal manager is staying on the job for a little while longer. City hall confirmed Wednesday Norm Levac, who had announced his retirement as CAO effective in the new year, will remain on the job and help bridge the gap between the former city council and the newly-elected group that assumed office recently. Levac was approached to reconsider his decision in light of all the new faces around the council table. It was felt that also adding a new CAO would add to the steep learning curve already facing municipal leadership. “I am pleased that Mr. Levac has agreed to continue as CAO,” said Mayor O’Shaughnessy. “His experience and familiarity with city issues

Long-time rural journalist Robin Morris passes away emailing us anymore,” said Zandbergen, who credited Morris with sharpening his skills as both a writer and photographer. “From long experience, Robin had a feel for the news, the questions to ask, and the incredible work ethic and discipline necessary to churn out product for readers each week.” “We have lost one of the greats who truly loved a real newspaper and everything it represented and offered its reader,” said Kreg Raistrick, co-owner of Winchester Print, the printing contractor for Etcetera Publications (Morris’s publishing company). Though a traditional newsman in many ways, Morris embraced new technology. Long, long before the iPhone, he was a stalwart fan of Apple computers. He introduced cutting-edge digital camera technology to the shop in the late 1990s — when folks were still amazed by it. The son of Jack and Ida Morris, Robin Morris came from a publishing family. After university, he joined his father and his brother, John — both deceased — at their Prescott-based newspaper firm in 1974. A couple of years later, following Jack Morris’s retirement, the brothers undertook their first major expansion by purchasing The Record,

where their father got his start as a reporter decades earlier. As Morris himself recounted in a story about his brother, the family then purchased the Tupper Lake (NY) Free Press in 1977 and established the AgriNews the following year. They added the Winchester Press to their list of publications in 1981. In the 1990s, Robin wound up going it alone as owner of The Record, AgriNews and The Russell Villager (since amalgamated with The Record). Morris was a fan of both sports — especially the Ottawa Rough Riders — and history. A key organizer of Loyalist Days in Prescott, he went on to revive interest in the Battle of Crysler’s Farm as president of the Friends group associated with the monument. Following in the steps of his parents, the Chesterville Rotary Club inducted Morris as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2007. At the time of the surprise honour, Morris told the Club that covering news in the local area was a “tremendously rewarding” vocation “because of the projects undertaken by people like you.” He leaves behind a wife, Kathryn Guthrie, and two adult sons, Evan and Tristan.

Robin Morris Morris’s good friend Bob Irvine offered a famous quote from the funeral of Admiral Nelson to sum up his feelings about the deceased: “I grieve for the loss of the most fascinating companion I ever conversed with …” The family plans a private funeral, with a public celebration of Robin’s life to follow this summer. - This report contains material reprinted with permission from The Villager.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A long-time rural journalist who maintained a family tradition of steadfast, professional coverage of events in SD and G has passed away. Robin Morris died at the Ottawa General Hospital Tuesday. He was 64. Morris was the publisher of the Chesterville Record, a community newspaper in North Dundas that has stood the test of time for 120 years. His father began a career as a journalist at the newspaper more than 70 years ago. Morris, though, parlayed his family heritage into a lifetime of respect and passion for the written word. He discussed story ideas for The Record and the monthly Eastern Ontario AgriNews with editor Nelson Zandbergen as late as Thanksgiving weekend. Morris had been in declining health related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for the past several years. Still, staff were shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. “It’s just so hard to believe that the voice of Robin Morris has been stilled, that he won’t be calling or

Front-line workers call for action Adam Brazeau

adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Ontario’s developmental services are in a state of crisis, according to a handful of unionized workers picketing at Open Hands in Cornwall. Kier Verner-Prokop, Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) region 4 mobilizer, led several developmental services workers with placards in hand at the corner of Pitt Street and South Branch Road to raise awareness on the issue on Friday, Dec. 12. “Prior to the election, the Liberals promised $810 million to improve developmental services, but that money is still at the table - and $200 million was promised for front-line workers,” said Verner-Prokop. The Ministry of Community and Social Services is currently facilitating talks between employer groups and OPSEU and CUPE to discuss creating a framework for sustainable conditions for workers across the province. But the $200 million will only be doled out over the next three years. “The money needs to come now. The whole field is underfunded,” said Verner-Prokop. “Through these actions we want people to know

what’s really happening.” Over two-thirds of developmental services workers are reportedly part-time, temporary, or on contract, and earn less than $14 an hour. Kathy Leger, a developmental services counsellor at Open Hands (a division of the OttawaCarleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities) for 12 years, echoed his sentiments. “We really need the money from the government now to support our individuals,” said Leger. “And we need a raise because are field is definitely underpaid.” She believes the cash injection will greatly improve services for everyone who lives with intellectual disabilities, their families, and people who provide services. Verner-Prokop said that Ontario Ombudsman André Marin’s office received 800 complaints regarding access to developmental services in 2013-14, and waiting lists have skyrocketed to 21,000 people. He also pointed out that the AllParty Select Committee on Developmental Services openly acknowledged the extent of this sector’s crisis in their March 2014 interim report. Meanwhile, Ontario’s Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk’s 600-page annual report, which was

Kathy Leger, a developmental services counsellor with Open Hands, at a picket information session in Cornwall on Dec. 12.Adam Brazeau released Tuesday, cautioned that the number of people waiting for services in Ontario as of March 31, 2014 was 14,300 adults, almost as many as the 17,400 adults who had received services in the previous 12 months. Lysyk also said that from 2009-10 to 2013-14, the number of people waiting for adult residential services increased 50 per cent while the number served increased only 1 per cent. The Auditor General calculated that it would take 22 years to

place everyone who is currently waiting for residential services. Verner-Prokop claims that the biggest problem is the extremely high turnover with workers, which results in a lack of continuity in care. “A big portion of this effort is getting individuals off waitlists to get into homes and get care - and the $810 million isn’t enough to get it cleared. It was said that it would take over $1 billion to get it done,” he said.

If Pichette does win the nomination, she’ll face the SDSG incumbent Conservative MP in Oct. 2015. Lauzon took office in June 2004 and received 62 per cent of the vote in the federal

CORNWALL, Ontario - A local business owner from Ingleside wants a shot at ending MP Guy Lauzon’s long-standing hold on the riding of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. But before Patricia Pichette can enter the political arena, she will have to get the approval of the SDSG federal Liberal riding association. Jamie Labonté, the association’s president, introduced his party’s first candidate hopeful in front of a few dozen supporters at the Knights of Columbus club on Sunday, Dec. 14. “Running isn’t an easy decision,” said Pichette. “Bernadette (Clement) just said the same thing to me. She thanked me for stepping up. We’ve worked together in the public for a long time now. And she’s aware of the fact that my commitment to SD&G is 100 per cent. This is a beautiful area - it deserves representation.” The glare of flickering cameras forced her to quickly regroup as she joked that it was her first time being under the watchful eye of media. “I’m so happy to go to this event today and events throughout the week with Liberals, and with past Conservatives who are considering the Liberal party because they see that our values are

more in line with their current ones,” she added. “People see that change needs to happen and that we are the ones who need to bring that about.” Pichette, 35, graduated from business in 2000 and became a goldsmith in 2003. She is married to James Allanson. Her jewelry store Fused Elements formerly had a Pitt Street location but Pichette decided to move it online instead. Cornwall city councillor Bernadette Clement, the 2011 SDSG federal Liberal candidate, is still unsure if she’ll run against Pichette. A nomination date has not been set, but said a Labonté front-runner will likely be revealed in Feb. 2015. Pichette says the Liberal party reflects her own personal views of inclusiveness and a transparent government that is accountable. She added that Federal Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau “helped her gain the courage to step forward for SD&G.” But her desire to be a Grit came before he took over at the helm. Pichette is currently in the green-lighting process as she waits for confirmation from the association. Labonté confirmed it’s more of a formality and she’s the first of four or five hopefuls who are interested or have filed the necessary

CORNWALL, Ontario - The United Way of SD&G needs residents to dig deep and donate - otherwise it may not reach its $707,070 campaign goal. The charitable organization announced that only 60 per cent had been reached as of Dec. 12. United Way Executive Director Lori Greer told Seaway News specific decisions about extending the campaign, or ending it short of the goal, have not been made. “It’s something we know we may have to look at,” she conceded. “We would prefer to meet the goal.” Greer said the cause of the shortfall lies in a

series of circumstances, and not one specific reason. The main setbacks were some third-party events done on behalf of the agency were not undertaken this year and some corporate campaigns were either shelved or not as lucrative as in years past. The United Way of SD&G also did not have a golf tournament this year. “We’re just concerned,” she said. “We want to make sure people are aware of that.” Nolan Quinn, campaign chair, says local United Way volunteers and staff are motivated and moving forward with strategies to close the gap. “We are hoping our community can help us

Christmas trees will be collected the weeks of January 5-9 and January 12-16, 2015. (Trees may not necessarily be collected on your regular collection day). Please remember to remove all tinsel, decorations and PLASTIC BAGS prior to collection and ensure your tree does not become stuck or frozen in snow banks.

Please be aware that there are many factors affecting the timeline for winter maintenance service; these include: snowfall accumulation, type of precipitation (i.e. freezing rain, wet snow or “just plain” snow), and/or the time of day the precipitation occurs. The average completion time for each plow route is six (6) hours. Cleanup times will vary depending upon the above noted factors.

DAY 1: Water fresh trees daily. DAY 2: Check all lights before decorating. DAY 3: Make sure you have working smoke alarms. DAY 4: Protect your family with carbon monoxide alarms; it’s the law in Ontario. DAY 5: Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs.

Your assistance during the winter season will help the Township of South Stormont Public Works Department provide efficient and effective winter maintenance. Your cooperation with snow removal is very much appreciated. Trucks with flashing blue lights are performing winter maintenance. Please give them room to work and pass with caution as visibility may be compromised with blowing snow. Park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete. This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone. Residents may find it less frustrating to wait until the plow trucks have completed their street before cleaning the end of their driveway. Plow units are designed to discharge snow to the side of the road and are not capable of skipping driveway areas. Snow from the end of the driveway should be shoveled to the right, facing the street. This will reduce the amount of snow being placed into the driveway during the next plowing. Residents hiring contractors to plow their driveways should remind the contractor that the Highway Traffic Act prohibits pushing or placing snow back into or across the street. Doing so not only creates hazards for drivers, but also makes it difficult to keep the streets clean. Current policy states that the Public Works Department will only replace a mailbox if the post, or box has a direct hit from the Township’s snowplow. Avoid installing mailboxes where they can be damaged by plowing operations. Canada Post can provide guidelines concerning the proper distances from road surfaces. Residents should clear snow from the mailbox area after each plowing. Snow that remains in front of mailboxes will get compacted by post office vehicles and make subsequent plowing less effective. If garbage and / or recycling pickup day coincide with plowing activities, make sure your trash can and recycling bins are behind the curb or in the driveway so the plow will not hit them. Don’t allow children to build snow forts and tunnels in the snow banks adjacent to the curb, or to play near the curbs.

United Way shortcomings will be eclipsed by our selfless community Todd Lihou

We’re a lot of things in Cornwall and area, but selfish is not one of them - which is why this lagging United Way campaign kind of confounds me. Sources indicate there is no specific reason why the campaign is having trouble reaching its goal on time, but instead there are a bunch of little things that are quickly adding up. No United way golf tournament this year, which I’m told has been fairly lucrative in the past. Many so-called “third-party” events, organized on behalf of the agency, never materialized this year. And the successful payroll deduction programs that the United Way has relied on in years past were not universally accepted by employers this year. If I am an agency like, say, the Agape Centre – which is looking to collect a cool million in 2015 for its Within These Walls campaign – I’m just a bit worried when I see the struggles of the United Way this year. Critics have suggested the bad press the United Way has been tarred with in the last year or so hasn’t helped either. I disagree. Last year was one to forget for the United Way. It parted ways with newly-hired executive director Frank Rockett, who lost a battle of differing management philosophies, with what I am told was a United Way board that was in disarray. Not long after Rockett was dismissed board chair Michael Paquette and the agency parted ways too. Paquette was replaced by Danny Aikman and the buzzword at the United Way became a simple one: “stability.”

- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

As I write this our friends over at the local United Way office are praying for a Christmas miracle. They’re going to need one. The United Way of SD and G is up against it as its 2014 fundraising campaign comes to a close. Word out of the United Way office last week is the campaign is lagging. Officials put their best spin on it, but for a layperson like me it sure looks like this campaign needs an emergency visit from Santa Claus, carrying a bag full of money, if things are to finish on time and on goal. As of Dec. 12 the campaign was at about 60 per cent of the $707,070 it needs to be considered a success. Typically the campaign is closed in the days just before Christmas – in this case many of us expected things would wrap up on or about Friday, Dec. 19. I would be shocked (in a good way) if the United Way was able to collect the $282,000 it needs to reach its goal in just a matter of days. But it’s looking more likely the campaign will have to be extended beyond this week in order to allow more time for collecting donations. Then questions begin to swirl about just how long the extension should be, and whether the United Way should close things down without achieving its goal. It’s too bad. I have always marveled at how this region rallies around charities and community agencies like the United Way, the Agape Centre and Hospice Cornwall.

I consider the events of last year anomalous in that they don’t happen every year. When was the last time a high-profile community agency like the United Way dumped both its executive director and board chair within weeks of each other amidst a fundraising campaign that is very much public? It doesn’t happen – so obviously there were specific problems that had to be addresses and indications received at this office suggest that is exactly what has happened. Fast-forward to 2014 and Lori Greer is the new executive director of the United Way. This is her first campaign, while Nolan Quinn has remained on as campaign chair, continuing in the role he had last year. In 2013 the United Way was successful in collecting the $700,001 it sought, despite the leadership sideshow. This year, because of its 70th anniversary, the agency decided to take things up a notch and set the goal at $707,070. Was it too much? Maybe…this is a tough

time of year for people to make massive donations when they are preoccupied with ensuring their children and family receives the Christmas bounty of years past. And the United Way isn’t the only “ask” out there. The Salvation Army has set up its bellringers throughout the city, and while the Agape Centre has not been overly vocal in soliciting donations for its mammoth campaign (yet), it will begin making noise in the New Year. Maybe Agape supporters with fixed budgets, who normally help the United Way, are holding on to their dollars? Hey, it’s only a theory…but in a tightly-knit community like ours, there really is a finite amount of money to go around. The good news is our community typically rallies in situations like this – and I expect that in spite of a campaign extension that seems to be a forgone conclusion, the 2014 fundraising goal will be met.

Canada is a pariah on national stage Dear editor: At the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Lima, Canada is a pariah. We are seen as a holdout and a failure, a problem that the rest of the world is forced to deal with. It’s a dark period for our international reputation. But that’s not the only story. While our climate record is indeed a failure, we still have much to be proud of as a nation, especially when it comes to aid for the less fortunate. Especially for global sufferers of Tuberculosis. In 2010, while the world still reeled from the consequences of economic collapse, Canada launched TB Reach. The purpose of TB Reach is to improve tuberculosis detection, and it has been very successful, at times doubling local case detection of the hardest to reach

sufferers–those poorly serviced and living in remote populations. TB Reach has provided grants to 145 projects in 36 countries, and has helped save millions of lives. But the clock is running out on TB Reach. Although funding runs out this year, the federal government has been silent on the fate of our internationally lauded fund. It is in danger of being abandoned, just when Canada needs to show that we are not just a disappointment to our global neighbours. Climate is a divisive and complex issue, but saving the lives of those suffering from TB is simple and cheap. More than ever Canada needs to fund TB Reach. Nathaniel Poole Victoria BC

Guy Lauzon’s no-surprise decision to seek reelection in next year’s federal election rather than pick up a cheque at the retirement wicket means Eric Duncan could spend four more years warming up in the Conservative bullpen. If re-elected Lauzon would become one of the longest serving MPs in local federal history. He was first elected in June, 2004. Only Bob Kilger and Lionel Chevrier, both Liberals, served longer. If and when Duncan gets the call from the riding association, he will be better prepared than any local Conservative candidate before him. Not yet 28, Duncan has cobbled a long list of impressive political milestones. Just three days after turning 19, and still in university, he became the youngest councillor to serve North Dundas and all of the United Counties. At 22 and up against a two-term incumbent in 2010, he became one of the youngest mayors in Canadian history, taking 72% of the vote. Steve Clark became one of the youngest when elected mayor of Brockville in 1982 at age 22. At 26 Duncan became the youngest warden in the 162year history of the United Counties. He was acclaimed to a second mayoral term. Last week he became the first warden to serve a second consecutive term. At age 23, Duncan, not long out of university purchased his first home, in Winchester, not far from his native South Mountain. It could take some time before we build trust with a new council ED ALLARD Call me old fashioned, but trying to resolve legal matters by press release seems a rather odd way of doing business. If I had some of the personal legal issues that Councillor Frost seems to have on his plate, I’d confine my stories to a lawyer rather than to everyone who reads a newspaper. Then again, I come from a generation that isn’t into letting everything hang out on Facebook, either. I can’t see too many lawyers recommending sending press releases hither and yon, but times may have changed there too. Mr. Frost’s personal affairs are not really the public’s business. But we duly elected him and his colleagues to provide governance and oversight of our city corporation. So his judgement and ability to make rational decisions, whether personal or not, is now quite properly a public matter. The news headlines of the past few

well as the cost concerns of local ratepayers. It might have been nice to see a rate reduction but this is not the time for short-changing capital expenditures on water and sewer. It’s one of the most critical systems in the city’s inventory. With so many old lines in the ground, there’s a real risk of costly surprises that could easily force future rates up considerably. I, for one, am not entirely comfortable with the prospect of reduction-hungry councillors, with no particular knowledge of the complex systems they’re playing with, making illinformed cuts and overriding the professional judgement of experienced, technically qualified staff. Of course, that’s the democratic system we live with and, warts and all, it’s still better than the alternatives. Fortunately, it takes six votes to approve something. But being able to trust the judgement of those we elect is also a fundamental part of what makes that system work. And that’s the way I see it.

Vigil shines light on snowball effect of PTSD Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder are two subjects a Cornwall veteran group wants out in the open. Friends of Vets held its second annual candlelight vigil at the Cornwall Cenotaph on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Garry Samler, president of the local peer support group, called for more government aid to address this year’s rash of military, police, veteran, and first responder suicides linked to PTSD. “There simply isn’t enough being done to help our wounded veterans when they return home with a mental illness,” said Samler. His wife and event co-organizer, Helene Paquin, told the dozen people in attendance who braved flurries of snow, that roughly 20

veterans take their own lives every year. She later explained that the number could be even higher since the government only counts those currently serving in the forces. She estimates that more Canadian soldiers have been lost to suicide than there have been lives lost in combat in Afghanistan. “It’s completely unacceptable more isn’t being done,” said Paquin. “This needs to change.” With close family ties to the military, and a husband with over 20 years in the army and the navy who was previously diagnosed with PTSD, she’s demanding action. Paquin believes one way to assist veterans and soldiers cope with the illness is having an ally like man’s best friend. “It’s been proven that service dogs help,” she said. The candlelight vigil was originally scheduled for Oct. 22, but due to two senseless

municipal works manager John St. Marseille. “We do have a backlog of deficiences in our water network.” City hall is in the midst of completing an asset management strategy which will prioritize the areas in the city in most need of a water main repair or replacement. In the meantime council green-lighted a modest increase to water and sewer bills in

Cornwall by about 1.33 per cent. The increase translates into between $7 and $11 extra on a typical water bill. Some councillors tried to reduce the budget, and the subsequent increase, including shelving an important project to recoat the water tower in Cornwall. The lion’s share of councillors described the budget as prudent and responsible.

CORNWALL, Ontario - While your water bill is set to go up next year, even more disturbing is the number of water mains in the city that need replacement. Nearly 70 of the 277 km of water mains in the city are in desperate need of repair, according to a presentation made to city council at a budget

meeting Wednesday night. It would cost as much as $40 million to repair all the water mains - which means the work won’t be done overnight. The city repairs about 1.5 km of watermains every year, but should be fixing about double that if it wants to keep up with some of its deteriorating infrastructure. “Ideally that’s where we should be,” said

The busy social season

Holidays are a busy time for visiting and being visited – you may be away for extended periods or have a house full of guests. If you’re away, have someone check in on your pet or board your pet. Note that your pet’s vaccinations will have to be up-to-date to be accepted at a boarding facility. If you’re entertaining, you may wish to keep your pets in a quiet room away from the noise and activity. If they’re mingling among the guests, make sure you’re monitoring them so that they don’t share your guests’ holiday finger foods!

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board to increase its natural gas rates effective January 1, 2015. Under the proposal, an average residential customer of Enbridge Gas would see an increase of $11 to the annual bill. Other customers, including businesses, may also be affected. The requested rate increase is based on the rate update framework approved by the Board for the period 2014 to 2018. The rate change is tied to updated costs for 2015 which include measures to promote efficiency.

Secure electrical cords and conceal outlets. Pets may chew on cords; and keep pets away from open flames. Some Christmas plants are toxic to pets. Keep your pets away from mistletoe, holly, poinsettias and amaryllis. If ingested, they may cause vomiting, diarrhea and/or other problems. Charity hockey match scores big for Cornwall food bank CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Colts suited up with local business and community leaders to help raise over $700 and 350 pounds of food for the St. Vincent De Paul (SVDP) Society. Over 250 hockey fans flocked to the second annual charity match on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Benson Centre. “The game is a way for the Colts, along with the Benson Group to give back to the community,” said City Councillor David Murphy, who also does marketing and promotion for the Jr. A team. A chunk of the funds raised are generated from the $50 each player pays to play. Guests either gave a $5 donation or a non-perishable food item. The Catholic-based charity operates an emergency food bank on Tuesday and Friday mornings out of the basement of St. Francis de Sales church on Second Street.

SVDP-Cornwall is comprised of 50 volunteers guided by an executive board of eight, selected from the volunteer pool. Their ‘Christmas Basket’ initiative receives requests from as many as 60 singles, 50 couples, and 50 families; baskets include vouchers, an assortment of food, and children’s toys. “We coordinate our food bank efforts with both Agape and the Salvation Army to ensure fairness of distribution and curb any abuse of our assets,” said Tom Thompson, president. St. Vincent is affiliated with the Ontario SVDP society at-arms-length and has neighbouring SVDP groups in Alexandria, Ottawa, and Kingston. “Our funding comes entirely from personal donations received from parishioners of the various Catholic churches in the area, as well as some corporate and private donations from others,” said Thompson. RESTAURANT ‘SCORES’ BIG WITH CUSTOMERS IN FIRST YEAR By Adam Brazeau

CORNWALL, Ontario - Famous for their mouthwatering chicken and ribs, diners are raving about Scores Rotisserie in Cornwall, the Brookdale Mall’s newest gem.

Owners Robert Cardinal and Stephane April opened the 6,000 square foot family restaurant at 960 Brookdale Avenue on Dec. 9, 2013. And judging by their loyal customers’ appetite for generous portions and friendly service, it looks like Scores is here to stay. But what’s their secret? “We have the best ribs and our salad bar is simply unique in Cornwall,” said Cardinal, the former owner of Sub Place who is well-known in the community as a restaurateur. Whether it’s using his skills as a chef in the kitchen or pitching in with the little things to help the restaurant run smoothly, he’s dedicated to making Canada’s 42th Scores restaurant a success. Meanwhile, April works the front of house. He guarantees Scores offers rotisserie food at the best possible price at lunch, dinner, on take-out, or delivery. “Many of our customers have grown into great friends - that’s the fun part,” said April. Offers valid for a limited time in participating Scores rotisseries’ dining rooms. Taxes are extra. Scores and the Scores logo are registered trademarks of PDM Royalties Limited Partnership used under license. ©Imvescor Restaurant Group inc., 2014. All rights reserved.

As soon as you step foot in Scores, it’s clear this is a restaurant with its own identity. The spirit of Cornwall hangs on the walls in a collection of large, eye-catching photographs of the speedway, high-level bridge, and several landmarks. And while there’s no bar area or tables, the restaurant seats over 200 people, and offers ample free parking. Under warm lighting and high ceilings, over 35 wooden booths with plush seating offer a cozy yet roomy visit. If your table of five doubles in size, just pull the partition in between every booth for more space. Of course, everyone has to wait for their order to be served. But no one waits to eat thanks to the “all-you-can-eat” soup, salad, and fruit self-serve bar, which comes free with rotisserie chicken meals. “Things are going very well and we thank the community for their support,” said Cardinal. To show their gratitude, Scores is offering a Festive Dinner meal starting at $12.95 during the holidays. The next step for Cardinal and April is opening another Scores in Kingston. Their Cornwall location employs nearly 50 people.

Helping others is a great experience Kylee LeClair Focus on Agape Centre

Two years ago, I worked with the Agapè Centre for my Grade 12 co-operative education, and was exposed to how hunger truly affects our community. It opened my eyes to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was at a loss for what to do after high school, when my teacher suggested looking into becoming a social service worker. A spark arose in me and I was able to make sense of how I could apply my passion for helping others to my life. I chose to do my college field placement this fall again with the Agapè Centre because it was where it all started for me. I want to share that experience, because I think it will help people to see another side of the agency. The clientele they deal with is primarily those who I truly feel need the help. Poverty is a huge social issue and has impacted a lot of lives in Cornwall. The center provides basic needs like food and clothing to the community, which are much needed. Poverty and hunger can be a struggle in a person’s life, and they may feel ashamed of this. The centre provides them with a friendly support, where they can come and feel as though life is not so bad. I spent 3 days a week for 4 months at the Agapè Centre, and I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of different clients and hear their stories. The most significant moment that has stuck with me happened one day while working in the

soup kitchen. I had grabbed the client’s meal ticket and gave her a friendly hello. She responded by saying “thank you.” As I proceeded to ask her why, she explained to me the importance of the soup kitchen in her life. She said: “Without this place, I would not be able to eat a full meal a day. The meals that Jayne (the head cook) prepares for us never fail me. They are always nutritious and very filling. I would starve without this kitchen, and for that, I thank you.” This moment will forever be with me. It really gave me a sense of joy that we were able to provide this woman with such happiness over a plate of food. I’ve also had the chance to work in all departments of the centre – the soup kitchen, food bank, client services, thrift store, sorting, etc – and have learned how it functions together. Each different area is essential for the whole to flow well. For example, did you know the money the thrift shop makes is fed into the soup kitchen and the food bank? If it weren’t for the community’s support by shopping in the store, there would be a lack of funding for the other services. Working in the back sorting area allowed me to see the process of how they decide what stuff is in good shape for the store and what is not. The work almost seems endless, but the ladies in the back are very welcoming, and do an excellent job at working through the donations and getting the store stocked.

I really liked working in the reception desk and being the front line person. Everyone comes there – clients, volunteers, staff, donors – and I got to meet so many people. I liked talking with donors about why they give to the centre. I got to see a different side. I was involved with the daily services, but I also got to take on some interesting projects of my own. I was given the opportunity to write a client survey for the food bank with my supervisor. We wanted to know how we can best serve the clients, so we brainstormed what questions needed to be asked. I created the survey and met with clients as they came in for their food bank appointments. Next semester I will get to analyze the results and recommend changes. It’s something the clients appreciated because sometimes they don’t feel like their voices are being heard, and this was an opportunity for them to give input. It was empowering. I also worked at creating a mini cookbook that we hope will be provided in the food bank with each order, if the demand is present. It will have recipes for the basic items clients get in the food bank, the food guide, and a chart of the best seasons to buy fruits and vegetables. This booklet could be an asset to the clients because it contains the basic information about easy ways to eat healthy and cook on a small budget. During my time at Agapè I have had endless encounters with the clients about the appreciation they have

Kylee LeClair

for the centre. There has not been a day where I have not heard “thank you, I really appreciate the help.” For this reason, I will always give my support to the Agapè Centre. I could not be happier with my choice for field placement. It has assured me that this is the right area to be seeking a career in. I was losing my spark at the start of my second year, but being back in the place that opened my eyes to my passion of helping others reignited the spark. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to help the community. I have developed a drive to make a positive impact in the client’s lives, and I gained the skills necessary. I sincerely love what I am doing. I look forward to continuing with the Agapè Centre for my second semester, and I’m excited about the new learning experiences I will encounter.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The ninth annual Aultsville Winter Film Festival promises to take its audience on a trip around the world and back, all within the comfort of the theatre. “It’s exciting because we are growing - from five, to now, eight films,”said Melanie Baker-Brown, festival board member, who views dozens of films each year, at TIFF and at other venues, from which the lineup is selected. “We have to see a lot of films to get a good variety of content, genres and foreign content,” she said. “We’re really excited about the lineup this year, because it’s really a global journey.” Taking place January 23 to 25, this year the format has changed, explained Baker-Brown, “in order to make it more about the films and their discussion time.” “It’s the discussion between the films which is what the audience seems to enjoy. It certainly builds a community atmosphere.” There will be two films on Friday evening, three on Saturday, and three on Sunday, with a cocktail hour between the evening films, and refreshments during the daytime screenings.

This year’s selections include Canadian documentary filmmaker, Gunnarson’s, Monsoon, which takes a look at the weather system’s monstrous power capable of sustaining life and destroying it. It has been described Gunnarson’s love letter to India. Next, Advanced Style, which has gone from blog to book to feature length documentary, captures the positive joyful image of getting older and those aging creatively. Tracks tells the incredible true story of a young Australian woman who in 1977, accompanied by only her faithful dog and four camels, satisfies her craving for solitude by embarking on a solo 1700 mile trek across the deserts of West Australia. Quebec’s young filmmaking phenom, Xavier Dolan, directs and stars in Tom at the Farm, a subtle psychological thriller. In Wadjda, a young Saudi girl enters a Koran recitation competition at her school in hopes of winning enough money to buy her own bicycle, something forbidden, for girls, in SA. The film offers a rare glimpse into the cultural norms of Saudi Arabia and is the first feature made by a female Saudi director

One of the eight films to be screened at the ninth annual Aultsville Winter Film Festival is Boyhood. Vincent Wants to Sea is about young man with Tourette’s Syndrome, who escapes from an institution with two other patients and travels to Italy to fulfill his late mother’s last wish. An incredible undertaking, Boyhood, filmed in vignette type segments over twelve years with the same cast, follows the ups and downs of American family life in a coming of age drama film. The final selection, sure to complement this already-stellar line-up, is yet to be finalized. “We’re hoping to leave our audiences shaken and stirred; we want all the emotions,” said Baker-Brown. Funds raise support the general operation of Aultsville Theatre. Tickets are $120, which includes the eight films two cocktail hours and refreshment. They are available at the Civic Complex box office or order them through online. Visit www.aultsvilletheatre.com for further details.

There is nothing I could write this week that wasn’t covered in the past two weeks and really, what could I offer that has not been said. Jean Beliveau’s passing left that indelible mark on sports and life. One of those moments where you will always remember where you were when the news came. I was reading, it was late, my son knocked on the bedroom door, “Dad, Jean Beliveau died tonight.” Not Jean Beliveau, especially when, who among us in recent weeks, figured the news of a hockey great’s passing, would be that of Gordie

Howe. One of the best moments in this sad time, was been listening to TSN 690 in Montreal in the days following Mr. Beliveau’s death. Fans of all ages called in and shared their stories of their moment with Mr. Beliveau. Those many shared memories, brought me back to the time I met the Canadiens iconic number 4. I embarrassed myself badly. It was during one of those sports card and memorabilia shows at the Civic Complex during the early to mid 90’s.

I collect all things sports and even though I do collect autograph’s, I am not what the players would call a seeker, a sort of ‘Paparazzi’ who waits for the team bus a the rinks, looms about the hotel lobby’s with albums of cards and pictures in hand. But this day, I wanted a Jean Beliveau autograph. I got to the Complex picture in hand, the line up was close to 100 collectors, many just like me. It was one of those days where I had to be three places at the same time. I decided that I just could not wait. I left the line and headed to the door and there he was, gracefully his arresting figure entered the main door to the Salon’s. It was now or never, I chose to simply walk up to Mr. Beliveau, Sharpie in hand. No words had to be spoken, ‘Le Gros Bill’ stared at me, I instantly knew the stare - that stare that wanted to say “get to the back of the line and wait like everyone else,” but was never said. Mr. Beliveau took my Sharpie, signed his picture and as he handed it back to me said, “thank-you for coming.” I thanked him, turned and as I looked back saw the line, saw 200 eyes burning a hole in me, all thinking, who does he think he is? I knew it then, embarrassing myself for an autograph was not what I set out to do that day. As I walked to my car, I looked at that autograph, neat, legible and first class. The players today could take a lesson on how to sign their names, I thought. Twenty years later, with the death of Jean Beliveau, I thought of that day at the Complex and instantly knew why they called him Mr. Beliveau and always will.

Former local basketball star passes away Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame inductee and a basketball star in his time has passed away. Bob Taylor, who was inducted into the hall in the 1970s, has passed away at age 81. His son Robert said in an interview his father was made of tough stuff. “He had a quadruple bypass when he was 54,” he said. “That’s 27 years he had that.” Robert said his father was sociable and enjoyed a good time as much as the next person.

Still playing with CCVS seniors, he joined King George Aces in the strong City League, and was chosen the league’s Most Valuable Player as he led the team to the Eastern Ontario Finals in 1952. Practically unheard of at the time, Taylor was offered and accepted a basketball scholarship at a U.S. university, Clarkson in Potsdam, and was the starting centre on the varsity squad in 1953. Deciding on a teaching career, Taylor returned to Canada to attend Teacher’s College in Ottawa. There he joined the powerful Ottawa Schaeffers in the City League. In 1955, this

Taylor combining size, finesse, desire, and dedication, was Cornwall’s dominant Bob Taylor basketball player during the 1950’s compiling a most impressive record of individual and team honours and accomplishments. Returning to teach in Cornwall, he joined Hodgins Lumber leading them to Championships in 1956 and 1957, and was chosen Most Valuable Player, and won the scoring championship both years. In 1968, he coached CCVS to the E.O.S.S.A. Junior Championship. He coached and held executive positions in both minor hockey and baseball for many years including president of minor baseball in 1975. His funeral was held at Knox St. Paul’s Church.

Diane Deans hérite de son côté du comité des services communautaires et de protection. some painters have heard a request such as, “Could you make that third Wise Man look a bit more like me, and Mary more like my wife? Oh yes, I’d prefer a grove of apple trees around the oasis, rather than those palms. Would there be room for our dog in the far corner of the stable?” Then came the biggest of today’s influences on how the Christmas story is told: Hollywood, Walt Disney and Madison Avenue. They are the ones who introduced the Little Drummer Boy, the dancing Sugar Plum Fairies, Santa Claus, THE REASON FOR THE SEASON – Christmas Sinter Klaas, the partridge in a pear tree, Good without Christ would be like Thanksgiving King Wenceslas, Rudolph and all the other without giving thanks or Remembrance reindeer. What was the scene of the birth of Christ like? And who was there? Our take on the crèche scene varies, depending on our sources and culture. The sources can be sacred scripture, folk legend, ethnic bias, geography, art, Hollywood, Walt Disney, Madison Avenue and family tradition – or a pot-pourri of all. The Gospel according to Matthew (2: 9-11) makes mention of the star, some sort of house and the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Mark, from his first chapter to the sixteenth (the last), tells us absolutely nothing of what might have happened in Bethlehem. Luke (2: 1-18) makes mention of a manger, the

all-booked-up inn, shepherds and their flocks and a host of praising angels. In John’s gospel we get no hint of him having anything to say about the portrayal of the Bethlehem event. Folk legends and ethnic bias influence the interpretation and representation of the Christmas story. Each race and various native peoples have freely interpreted the skin colour, hair, facial features, garb and stature of Mary, Joseph and Jesus. Geography influences the way Berbers, Inuits, Maoris, Aborigines, Arabs and the Nootkas might depict the trees, dwellings, topography and climate of the Christmas story. Every artist that has been commissioned to portray Christ’s birth is influenced by everything in his (or her) upbringing – and what king, millionaire, pope, corporation or religious denomination is sponsoring the work. OPINION

Birthday of the King PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE PASTOR JOHN SCORGIE I will never forget, for as long as I live, a particular skit that was presented by some teenagers and children at Christmas time. The play portrayed a group of youth gathering for the birthday of their friend. At every point in the birthday party the thoughts, feelings, and legitimate expectations of the birthday boy were shuffled to the side. He was left out of the games, refreshments, gift-giving, and so on. The party goers totally ignored the one whose birthday they had come to celebrate. The skit closes with this sobering, thought-provoking line from the birthday boy himself - “I wonder if this is how Jesus must feel?” It is so incredibly easy to miss the heart

BEHIND THINGS

of it all! It is so totally possible, amidst the busyness of the Christmas season, to miss the target by a kilometre. Or do you really mind missing the centre of it all? Do you ever feel gypped by a festive Christmas season that has you preoccupied with the trivialities and trinkets and not the truth? Do you ever feel deprived of the real essence of Christmas because you settled for a sideline stance on the secondary issues, the outer appearances, the going-through-the-motions way of coping? I would strongly challenge you to get back on target and realize that Christmas is the joyful celebration of the birthday of the rightful King - Jesus Christ the Lord! I urge you to choose to “get it right” this Christmas! Your personal joy will be deep and sweet if you do “get it right!”

Shar’s Tip of the Week What you can’t see won’t hurt you may be true in things such as TV and boy/girl watching, but not in cleaning. If it’s left behind or under long enough it becomes attached, smelly, a breeding ground for bugs. This task isn’t an everyday or even every week, but you need to clean behind often enough to show it who’s the boss.

If SDSG Conservative MP Guy Lauzon retires from politics the local Liberals would finally have a chance to win a federal election. That is until you factor in North Dundas and United Counties of SDG Warden Eric Duncan. For anything to change, the Grits will have to find a way to win over rural voters. With Liberals on city council it’s pretty clear where Cornwall stands.

THESE WALLS Building Campaign

This year the Agapè Center proudly recognizes our 43 years of service as the largest hunger relief organization serving Cornwall and the Counties. One way we measure our success is by pounds of nutritious food distributed to hungry people, however the weight of gratitude felt by our clients is immeasurable. Over the past four decades, we have distributed more than 4 million food items. In the past 3 years, we’ve experienced a 30% increase in the number of request for food assistance. Along with the growing amount of pedestrian traffic and daily usage, the amount of wear and tear has also grown. The building that houses our very efforts to help those in need is beyond due for repair. Please consider a contribution to the campaign to help us reach our goals. 5822390

Reader has big thanks to Norman at Staples in Cornwall for providing exceptional service.

The staff at Notman’s Dodge Chrysler Jeep in Cornwall mourned the loss of Montreal Canadiens great Jean Beliveau by wearing their favourite Habs attire. From a caller … Great News! CEO of Champlain Community Care Access, which is supposed to distribute home care for our disabled and seniors, gets a $67,000 dollar raise now earning $314,991.00 annually (poor thing). More money is given every year to help care for the seniors, not for pay raises for management. Caller has great examples of this, being that his wife worked for 17 years at Para-med . The staff had great Christmas dinners catered in while the actual workers had to bring their own food and their significant others were not allowed to go. To top this off, all office staff got nice warm vest for Christmas while the people working out in the cold got a 15 cent plastic whistle in case they would be attacked at night. Millions of dollars are given yearly but it is not getting to the people that need it. This has been going on for a long time and something must be done about it.

Christmas Wishes to Joanne for all the great Say no to Mistletoe - it can cause gastrointes“Avon” service all year. Enjoy the holidays … and tinal problems in your pet. pet kisses to Taco & Pita! Di.

Local readers are upset with Canada Post for not delivering or picking up mail for at least two days last week following the snowstorm. Neighbours picked up shovels and cleared the snow at “our community mail boxes so that the delivery could resume...what’s next we organize volunteers co we can drive the mail truck? Shame.

Mayor Ian Mcleod extends best wishes for a very joyous and peaceful

Mourning Beliveau From a web follower: Thank you to Kevin Lajoie and Tommy Sauve from the City of Cornwall for the very positive information you provide us on the City of Cornwall’s Facebook page. The information you both provide is greatly appreciated. Sour lemons to the people who just go on this page to be so negative. Do you see just how stupid and ignorant you look? If not, you should.
