“Seven years ago I was 24 years old, 100 pounds overweight, and a new mom.”
CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall police have charged a noted city financial advisor with dozens of additional counts of fraud and related offences as its investigation continues to evolve. Gilles Latour, former chair of Team Cornwall, was arrested last Wednesday and has been charged with 37 fraud related offences including breach of trust, theft by conversion, fraud over $5,000 and obtain by false pretenses.
Court documents suggest a pair of initial complainants associated with the earlier Cornwall police charges is missing $201,000. Latour was also under investigation by the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada, which had been seeking a prohibition from his work in the securities industry before proceedings were terminated weeks ago. Latour is no longer practising securities work, the MDFA has said. None of the allegations against Latour, criminal or otherwise, have been proven.
That’s in addition to similar counts he was charged with earlier this year. There are now seven complainants who have come forwarded to police with allegations. Police said it is alleged that between August, 2008 and April, 2014 Latour defrauded five individuals and police were contacted to investigate. On Wednesday Latour attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on Jan. 8.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall’s new mayor wants residents to know things have changed at city hall. Leslie O’Shaughnessy, who along with the balance of city council was sworn in Monday night at the civic complex, told those in attendance that new leadership has arrived – in spades. “If an old boys club existed yesterday, it is gone as of today,” he said to applause from the audience. “Each and every person at this table agreed we must do a better job of informing the public.
Starting this evening that must be a priority of this council the community voiced its concern…it’s now our responsibility to ensure it happens.” Many councillors, O’SHAUGHNESSY along with thanking family and volunteers who helped them get elected during the campaign, agreed changes are required at city hall. “It’s not going to be easy, because we’ve been handed a big mess,” said Coun. Mark MacDonald.

“Clearly the citizens of Cornwall were not happy with the direction we were taking. “The only thing is, the expectations are now high and the challenges are going to be great. We desperately need a strong team. We are going to have a lot of issues that will separate us…but we need to focus on some common goals.” Others agreed, suggesting there are promises that must be kept. “I hope that this next four years brings out more transparency and accountability we campaigned on,” said returning Coun. Maurice Dupelle. The new dean of city council, Coun. Andre
Rivette who returns for his fifth consecutive term of office, suggested the game plan of council should be simple. “Our mayor is very much in favour of transparency,” he said. Council rookies agreed the challenges are significant. “I hope I live up to your expectations,” said Coun. Claude McIntosh, who finished in second place overall Oct. 27 with more than 5,000 votes, adding he sees strengths around the table. “I think that we’re up to the job.” City council will actually do business at its first meeting of the new term next Monday.

Building Better Men draws the line
CORNWALL, Ontario - White ribbons on a tree’s branches in downtown Cornwall call for an end to violence against women. Building Better Men chair Ron Graham and his son Samuel tied dozens of the symbolic gestures outside of the Pitt Street police station on Wednesday, Nov. 26, as part of the annual White Ribbon Campaign (WRC). It took a matter of seconds for it to take effect. A woman stepped out of a vehicle and approached them with tears in her eyes and a
small heart keychain in her hands. “I want you to have this...thank you,” she said before asking to remain anonymous. The 10-year-old boy accepted the small gift and smiled. “Everyone is the same, and should be treated the same,” said Samuel. “I hope people stop abusing each other, especially women.” That sentiment was reiterated by his father. “It’s always been a woman’s issue, but it’s a man’s issue, too,” said Graham. “Men need to stand up and be accountable.” The local chapter of Building Better Men, also known as BBM or BBM NO, was formed in
75 Cornwall Centre Road
Nov. 2011 and is an extension of the Mayor’s Task Force on Violence Against Women and Children, established in 2008. At the group’s unveiling, city officials declared November as Woman Abuse Prevention Month in Cornwall. BBM currently has about 12 members, including Corrie D’Alessio, a community health worker at Seaway Valley Community Health Centre, and Ivan Labelle, a community health agent at Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie. Both were helping the Grahams hang ribbons from the tree. During a two-week speaking tour at local high schools, the male-led group will hand out

Bart Heinen puts an ornament on the BFO Memory Tree in Cornwall on Nov. 30, 2014, at the 18th annual lighting ceremony in remembrance of his partner who passed away in Sept. after battling cancer. Adam Brazeau you have a long journey ahead - it gives you hope,” said Heinen. He finds relief from his grief with their opendoor policy and free literature to help with the various stages of loss. The group sessions especially keep him anchored. He encourages anyone dealing with loss not to feel alone and to reach out to BFO. After being a fixture in Cornwall for nearly 30 years, the organization is facing significant funding cuts in 2015, and may opt to completely close its branch, confirmed Traci Trottier, the agency’s program co-ordinator. She was not in attendance at the tree lighting due to illness. Terry, BFO’s treasurer and board member, agreed that the loss of United Way funding will have a major impact. CORNWALL, Ontario - Heartstrings were stretched tight as Bereaved Families of Ontario of Cornwall & Area lit up the Cornwall Square on Nov. 30. The 18th annual Memory Tree Lighting service is a family tradition for Cornwall’s Chantal Dean and her son Zoey, 9. For four years, they’ve hung a special memorial ornament on the towering pine to commemorate Dean’s grandparents. This year it reads: “Christmas in Heaven.” “They’re always in our hearts,” said Dean. Her loved ones passed a few years ago, but time can only take the healing process so far. Dean’s emotional wounds still feel fresh for her as expressed in her teary eyes and shaky voice. “Just before Christmas we’ll come take our ornament and hang it in our own tree,” she said. Jack Terry, a facilitator for the Cornwall branch of Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO), shared with the crowd that when his son died nearly 10 years ago, the charitable organization helped him so much he decided to pay it forward. “The first Christmas without your loved one sucks. There’s no other way to say it,” said Terry. “But it gets better and as you can see, you’re not alone.” He pleaded with mourners to not shut down and distance themselves away from others, and reminded them that many people are sincerely there to help. In between his brief speech and a few others, all heart-wrenching stories, the Centennial Choir softened the mood with a series of stirring ballads. And then it was time to hang the memorial ornaments. Bart Heinen felt a small cathartic release as he participated. But the loss of his partner, Kendra, to a rare form of cancer in mid-September, still overwhelms his senses. He has been finding solace in support groups and other free services offered by the local BFO. “This doesn’t make you feel so alone when

Cornwall woman alleges abuse at school for the blind, $200M suit filed CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall woman who endured a nightmarish childhood at a school for the blind in southern Ontario is speaking out. Carol Hutt is part of a class-action lawsuit that has been filed against the provincial government for alleged abuses that took place at W. Ross MacDonald School for the Blind, located in Brantford. The $200-million suit claims students at the school suffered abuse and neglect at the hands of staff over many decades. According to the plaintiffs, the school’s caregivers – known as “house mothers” and “house fathers” – took advantage of the students’ disabilities and used physical violence and degrading tactics as a means of discipline. None of the allegations have been proven in court. “No one ever believed us when we spoke out about the abuse we endured,” said Hutt, 57. “By sharing my experiences today, I hope that I can
encourage others to come forward and do the same. We need to come together. “We deserve justice.” On many occasions her condition, which left her totally blind, would result in blisters on her eyes that would sear with pain. But unless she presented herself to the nurse at the school on the day when an ophthalmologist was available (usually a Tuesday) her complaints of pain were brushed off or otherwise ignored. “On a scale of one to 10 the pain was a 10,” she said. “I wasn’t believed. “(The nurse) would jerk my head around and she was very aggressive about having to call an ophthalmologist in.” Often Hutt simply had to endure the pain that burned its way into her head. “It was traumatizing,” she added. “I cried with pain.” Hutt said similar stories are told by other students. Her situation was confounded by the fact that her relatives were of no help. She was one of 11 children in the massive Cornwall family,
but the only one who was shipped off to school, far away from Cornwall, every year for 13 years. “My family was what you would call dysfunctional,” she said, adding: “It would not have helped if I had said anything to them.” In the early going the completely blind sixyear-old was put on a train to Brantford, alone, with a note pinned to her coat explaining her situation. “There was a conductor named Jimmy,” she said. “He would take of me.” James Sayce, a lawyer with Koskie Minsky the firm representing the complainants, is working to raise the profile of the suit and encourage others who were abused to come forward. “W. Ross MacDonald employees failed to properly provide for the students placed under their care,” he said. “It is our hope that we can meaningfully engage with the government and their counsel and encourage a timely settlement. The victims deserve to get justice.” Last week the complainants and the law firm went public to talk about the case and the abuse each victim allegedly suffered while

The class action, certified in May 2012, concerns allegations of abuse against students enrolled at the school from Jan. 1, 1951 to today, and who were alive as of Feb. 22, 2009, according to a report in the Brantford Expositor.

EDUCATION
Labour plan to examine local imbalances Ed Allard The Eastern Ontario Training Board recently released its Local Labour Market Plan for Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and also Prescott and Russell counties. The plan is for the period 2014-17 and will include annual updates. Its main purpose is to address imbalances in the local labour market. An imbalance in the labour market occurs when the number of workers in an occupation is greater than the number of jobs. That generates unemployed workers, underemployed workers and low labour force participation. The other part of that equation occurs when the number of workers in an occupation is less than the available jobs. That will lead to unfilled vacancies, constrained business growth and a stagnant economy. The plan identifies those imbalances in some detail and offers strategies and priorities for correcting them to support economic growth across the five counties. There are several conditions locally that are creating an imbalance. One is that only 60 percent of eligible workers in SDG are participating in the labour force. In the rest of Ontario, that figure is 65 percent. Prescott-Russell enjoys a much healthier 69 percent average, due in large part to Russell County abutting the
large and diverse Ottawa market while, in Hawkesbury, participation rates are as low as 52 percent. That suggests a lot of people with marketable skills and abilities are sitting on the sidelines – about 57,000 of them across the region according to Statistics Canada. People leave the labour force for a variety of reasons. Some opt for early retirement. Some women and perhaps a smaller number of men choose to raise their families at home rather than to work. Some people have medical issues or handicaps that make it difficult to function in a normal workplace. Some have criminal records, which makes accessing jobs more difficult. And there are a number of other equally valid reasons. A key strategy is to encourage some of those people to return to work through better marketing of available positions. Another important strategy is to encourage employers to find ways to make their workplaces more flexible, where possible, through work at home strategies, more flexible hours and so forth. Another cause of the imbalance is an aging workforce. This is gradually reaching across the spectrum but is especially evident locally in management level positions. About 30 percent of managers across the region are age 55 or more. It’s natural that people in management positions are somewhat older than the
Business students can now transfer to other institutions and keep their credits Todd Lihou CORNWALL, Ontario - The president of St. Lawrence College is heralding a decision that will allow business students to transfer from one provincial institution to another and keep their credits. Ontario’s 24 colleges have signed the first-ever province-wide agreement that grants recognition for credits already completed when a student in a business diploma program transfers to the same program at another college. “Post-secondary students who transfer to another institution shouldn’t have to repeat courses they have already completed,” said Glenn Vollebregt, president and CEO of St. Lawrence College and co-chair of the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT).“This new agreement will help eliminate duplication and cut costs for students.” The agreement, announced by Colleges
Ontario and ONCAT, applies to students in accounting, business administration, human resources and marketing programs. This unique universal college agreement allows students to easily transfer among all college business programs across Ontario. The agreement means that business students who transfer at the end of their first or second year will receive full credit for their completed courses. Given the high enrolment of business programs, these pathways provide additional flexibility for a significant number of students. “Ontario’s colleges and universities continue to strengthen their systems for transferring credits among post-secondary institutions,” said Glenn Craney, the executive director of ONCAT. “We are pleased that all of the province’s 24 colleges have signed this agreement which demonstrates their high level of commitment to institutional collaboration on student mobility.”
essential employee skills such as the abilities to communicate, to learn quickly and to be flexible in the workplace. New technologies are putting further pressure on skills requirements and are demanding even more flexibility. Of the 5,100 people in SDG and PrescottRussell who used employment services such as Job Zone in the past year, over 1,000 or 20 percent of them did not have a Grade 12 diploma. Now some of those were students seeking part time employment while they continue in school. But too high a proportion are those who have left the education environment. Over 700 of them are now accessing available Literacy and Basic Skills programs. Therefore, addressing the needs of employees to acquire basic skills and become more adaptable to ongoing workplace changes is a critical element of both labour market planning and economic development planning. Eastern Ontario Training Board continues to work with employers, employment services, training institutions and other labour market partners to develop workable means to put these strategies into action. The full details of the Local Labour Market Plan are available on the Board’s website: http://www. eotb-cfeo.on.ca. Further information is available by contacting the Board at (613) 932-0210.
Anti-bully message
Recently it was antibullying week and the students at La Source School in Moose Creek had several activities to mark the event. One particular activity was a presentation given by Daniel Gauthier from the Équipe Psycho-Sociale. The workshop included how to recognize bullying, how to react and how to be proactive in preventing bullying. All students enjoyed the interactive workshop and can now use the three steps which are Stop, Walk away, and Talk to someone. average worker. They are not usually entry level positions and require a degree of skill and knowledge that can only be acquired through some work experience. Because the general population is aging, this imbalance will likely continue to grow. One strategy is to encourage employers to develop succession plans to enable younger employees to acquire the necessary skills. Another is to reach out more actively to student populations to interest them in employment opportunities to fill in the gaps. The other cause of the imbalance is a surplus of workers in one occupation and a lack of workers in a related occupation which may use similar skills. The key strategy there is to transition workers from one to the other. That may mean some short term skills development for workers or the unemployed through formal or on-job training. In other cases, longer term training or education may be required. It also involves a willingness and an ability on the part of those looking for work to undergo training to up-skill. The local economy depends heavily on having an educated and adaptable workforce if the region is to remain competitive and able to attract new businesses. According to a survey of local employers, one of the barriers to successful employee retention is the lack of

100 days from now we should start to see synergies at city hall - or not Todd Lihou
a couple of months, to get its feet moving. Heck, some old city councillors are still having trouble remembering the names of new ones. That’s not to say that council shouldn’t be held to a high regard, even from day one. But the fact is everyone needs a chance to get acclimated to a new job – even politicians. An easy place to start is exactly the area mentioned time and again Monday night – transparency. Monday’s quote of the night went to O’Shaughnessy, who flat out suggested the days of an “old boys club” if there ever was one, are now over. The onus is on O’Shaughnessy to make good on his promise. The rest of council can be lumped in, as well. But how this new spirit of openness translates into reality is still kind of a mystery. Political roundtables? Maybe. More details on the goings-on of in-camera meetings? Meh – I guess it’s possible. Fireside chats in the mayor’s office? It could happen (though the office would need an actual fireplace). Ultimately the only way this new administration will be judged on a pledge to be open is with time. Don’t expect (though it would be nice) a breakdown of answers to all the burgeoning questions that have piled up in recent months/years. The answers, if we’re to believe the rhetoric, will come…I’m just suggesting we may have to be patient. We’ll get a small sneak-peak into the
todd.lihou@tc.tc
They hit all the right notes on Monday night- now it’s up to city council to follow through. Councillors and newly-minted Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy were sworn in at the Cornwall Civic Complex in a ceremony that was long on tradition and included some references to the looming priorities for Cornwall. The buzz words attached to this collection of civic leaders, which is laden with political rookies, are ‘transparency’ and ‘accountability’. The belief, both on the street and in some doorways at city hall, is that council has been too secretive. Closed-door meeting investigations, courtroom convictions for employee retaliation and perceived lethargy when it comes to those chemical tanks on the waterfront helped usher in some new blood around the council table. In short, we wanted change and that’s exactly what we got. But what can we expect from this new city council, in the short-term? The answer, unfortunately, is not much. There are four city councillors, Claude McIntosh, Carilyne Hebert, Brock Frost and Justin Towndale, who have never held the job before. Throw in Mark MacDonald, who may need to shake off some rust, and O’Shaughnessy who is new to his job as well, and council can be forgiven if it will need a few weeks, or even
decision-making process of this council next week. Word is the setting of water and sewer rates (you know, the other tax) will be a priority on the agenda. While there are no more meetings for the month of December, councillors won’t be able to simply kick back and enjoy the Christmas holidays. A metric ton of reading and informal meetings looms for council as it busies itself in the education process that is the 2015 budget. This time will be especially taxing for the rookies, who will get to see first-hand that being a city councillor is more than showing up every couple of weeks at city hall, while also attending the odd committee meeting. In the United States they have what is called the “first hundred days.” It’s a time when a newly-elected administration is said to be at its most powerful in shaping legislation, making changes, and generally governing at its best.
The public often gives the new (or re-elected) president a pass on a lot of things, and for the most part the government is allowed to do its job. After that the pressure starts to mount for politicians to follow through on the pledges they made during the election. The same could be said about this new Cornwall city council. It won’t be able to make all the changes it wants to overnight, that much is clear. But, 100 days from now, its first municipal budget should be all but wrapped up, a strategic planning session may have taken place (and if not, one should have been at least scheduled) and relationships will have been created around the table. It’s at that time voters should start to see just how fruitful the seeds of this new council will be. Or not.

“silicofluorides” (i.e., hydro-fluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate). Silicofluorides are not pharmaceutical-grade fluoride products; they are unprocessed industrial by-products of the phosphate fertilizer industry. Since these silicofluorides undergo no purification procedures, they can contain elevated levels of arsenic — more than any other water treatment chemical. In addition, recent research suggests that the addition of silicofluorides to water is a risk factor for elevated lead exposure, particularly among residents who live in homes with old pipes. The Cornwall drinking water report made available on the city website, shows drinking water flows average around 35,000 cubic meters per day. Theoretically if every person in Cornwall were to drink an average of four litres of treated city water per day (equivalent to 2x2L Pepsi) with the current population of Cornwall at 47,000, this would equal less than one per cent of the treated water consumed. This would leave 99 per cent of the treated water not being consumed, which has been dosed with an average of 0.5mg/L to 0.7mg/L of hydro-fluorosilicic acid. This acid is making its way into the
environment and artificially fluoridating the St. Lawrence River, not to mention the additional chemical containments found in hydro-fluorosilicic acid. The financial breakdown if the City of Cornwall currently spends approximately $60,000 on water fluoridation and then less than 1% is drank, that means $59,000 of the fluoridation is literally going down the drain. Could this additional money not be put towards an oral hygiene education program at the elementary levels? If not $59,000 buys a lot of toothpaste and tooth brushes. Just to mention the upgrades required to make the fluoride system at the treatment plant “up to date” and safe is pushing $300K and possibly more future costs. We are ingesting hydro-fluorosilicic acid and the one ingredient “fluoride” only makes up 23.92% of the chemical being added to the water. This product is laden with contaminants and is very inefficiently delivered. I for one would have to say, “Please DO NOT bring back the Hydro-Fluorosilicic Acid.” Syl Cardinal, Cornwall

It’s the kind of stuff of which Canadian minor hockey players dream: Standing in a National Hockey League arena while being cheered by thousands of fans who have risen to their feet as your picture is flashed on the jumbotron perched over centre ice. On Dec. 13, in the always sold-out Air Canada Centre, a Cornwall native will soak up the experience. He will be in uniform that night, but he won’t be wearing one of the two oldest “battle” uniforms in the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. Instead, Master Cpl. Patrick Johnson will be wearing a more sacred uniform, that of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Johnson, a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School, will be one of two members of 8 Wing in Trenton to be honoured as part of the popular, at least in Toronto, ‘Lupe’s Troops’ program that throws the spotlight on members of the Canadian Armed Forces, especially those who have served in Afghanistan. Johnson, who completed two tours in Afghanistan, was chosen for the honour by the brass at the Trenton air base. His brother, Major Tony Johnson, now serving alongside U.S. Air Force personnel of the Southern Command defence system based in Miami, also served in Afghanistan. They are the sons of Don and Linda Johnson. Don is a prominent Cornwall defence attorney. The program was started by defenceman Luke Schenn and the Leafs in 2009 as a way to recognize the contribution by members of Canada’s Armed Forces. The program was christened ‘Luke’s Troops’. After Schenn was traded (to Flyers for James Van Riemsdyk), forward Joffrey Lupul took over and it is now called ‘Lupe’s Troops’.
Naturally, the program has received the blessing of Hockey Night In Canada’s Don Cherry. Lupul donates tickets and jerseys (Leafs, of course). The fans supply the standing “O”. The Maple Leafs have a long association with Canada’s military, going back to the days when they were owned by Major Conn Smythe, a veteran of World Wars One and Two as was noted by Leafs’general manger Dave Nonis in a press release, “Our organization has a long-standing and proud connection with the men and women that serve our country.” But not everyone in the Big Smoke endorses the Air Canada Centre salute to the military. One commentator railed against the gesture, saying it promoted warmongering. Of course, we had the same type of mentality poke its head out of the sand few years back when some folks argued against city council’s decision to put “Support Our Troops” decals on city emergency vehicles, claiming it promoted war. The Barra MacNeills will be in Cornwall Dec. 8 as part of their annual Christmas tour. Stewart MacNeill, in an interview from Calgary, said the family musical group, said the performance is one that many people use to usher in the season. “We’ve heard from people who have told us it’s how they begin the holidays,” he said. “It’s a really uplifting show.” The Cape Breton siblings have been performing in Canada, the United States and Europe
for decades entertaining audiences with their special Celtic spirit. Sheumas, Kyle, Stewart, and Lucy MacNeill began performing in 1980 and brothers Ryan and Boyd joined the group in 2005. Their name comes from the island Barra in Scotland where their clan is from. Stewart said he’s probably travelled the breadth of Canada a dozen or so times over the years - but never grows tired of the trip. “It’s great to mix with the people and enjoy what our country has to offer,” he said. Tickets for the Cornwall performance, which takes place Dec. 8 at Aultsville Theatre, can be purchased at the box office and also online at admission.com.

Fires keep Cornwall service busy last week Todd Lihou and Adam Brazeau todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - An early morning fire in the west end last Wednesday sent a couple of residents scurrying from their home in the morning. And now Cornwall police are investigating an arson. Firefighters responded to the smoky blaze at about 8 a.m. Wednesday at a Second Street West home. The owner of the home, who was not identified, said the fire was sparked in a basement bedroom, and quickly engulfed a mattress. She could not say how the fire was started and officials are still investigating. But Cornwall police Const. Dan Cloutier said the service has assumeed control of the investigation. “(The fire service) has determined it is arson,” he said. “The scene has been turned over to police. “The investigation is not completed.”
The scene is cordoned off with yellow police tape and police cars have been parked at the home for much of the day. The homeowner said it didn’t take long for rooms to begin filling with smoke. “I called 911 when I saw all the smoke,” she said in an interview in her driveway. “A police officer arrived first. “He came in and saw the smoke downstairs and said ‘We’re not going down there.’” The officer ushered the occupants of the home out, and firefighters who arrived shortly after doused the flames. Completion ceremony for new wastewater treatment plant Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s even got that new wastewater treatment plant smell - you know, sewage? But that’s a good thing, because it told visitors to the city’s $55.5-million wastewater treatment plant that the facility is up and running normally. A completion ceremony for the new plants - the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the municipality - was held Friday at its Montreal Road locale.
evenly between the city, province and Ottawa at $18.5 million each. Mayor Bob Kilger, in his final public act as the head of council, joked: “I personally picked this location for my last press conference.” But the outgoing mayor turned serious when discussing the impact of the project. “In 2009 we began putting $1 million a year on the side because we knew this project was going to happen,” he said. “It clearly demonstrated to our partners...we were serious.” The upgrades will help to ensure the health and safety of local residents while protecting
The plant is a so-called secondary treatment facility, which means cleaner effluent released from the city’s sewage system into the St. Lawrence River. “After two years of construction, the plant now provides a higher level of wastewater disinfection through the use of ultraviolet technology and advanced sludge thickening, filtering and screening processes,” local MP Guy Lauzon said Friday at the event. Plant upgrades have also increased the facility’s treatment capacity. The cost to upgrade the facility was split
the surrounding environment by providing improved wastewater effluent and reducing the incidents of sewer overflows that are discharged into the St. Lawrence River. Project partners cut a ribbon to mark the completion of the project - though some in the audience joked that perhaps it should have been a roll of toilet paper, given the surroundings. The completion ceremony took place in the bowels of the wastewater treatment plant, some 60 feet below ground, according to estimates.

Here’s a summary of what I’ve learned about this type of motorcycle: it’s nicknamed ‘KRAD’ (short for Kraftrad), formally known as a BMW R75 (BMW: Bayerische Motoren Werke; in English: Bavarian Motor Works). The type was manufactured from 1941to 1943. Used by messengers, it also transported officers and critically-needed spare parts; it was sometimes fitted with a sidecar machine gun for self-defence and propaganda shows. Astride the restored motorcycle sits Hubertus von Ruville of Jever, in Germany, whose sister, Sigrid Kube of Finch, is a good friend of mine. She translated her brother’s snail-mail correspondence about the
motorcycle for me from the original German. It belongs to Ralph Habersetzer, also resident in Germany, who bought it in 1994 and, with his son, restored it to its present splendour. I will soon be able to correspond with him via e-mail. I also contacted Léon Chamois, curator of the SD&G Highlander Military Museum at the Cornwall Armoury. According to Chamois, there is even a motorcycle similar to the one that started all of this right here in Cornwall. There are perhaps 70 of these machines still in existence, owned and operated by individuals who are neither neo-Nazis nor weapons fanatics. They are self-described as being ‘techno freaks’. Genuine replacement parts are rare nowadays and very expensive, but Poland does manufacture new parts. From Chamois I also learned that its registration plate indicates it belonged to the ‘Wehrmacht’ (German armed forces). An H indicates ‘Heer’ (army); L is Luftwaffe (air force) and M is ‘Kriegsmarine’ (navy). Because the SS belonged to the Nazi
SIGRID KUBE – In 1995 she became an acquaintance through my research for a ‘Hometown’ story. Later, it was through her efforts I was able to bring you the Percy Adams WW I soldier’s letters stories. She was once a stranger, but is now a close friend. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk)

party and not the Wehrmacht, its vehicles showed SS as a prefix (Schutz Staffel: Security Staff ). Finally, ‘Mr. Google’ was consulted as a source of additional information. ‘Mr. Google’ was once a stranger to me. Now he’s an acquaintance, but he could never become a friend. However, he sure teaches me a lot. As a result of being willing to talk with strangers, many strangers have become acquaintances. If any of us ever manage to make the crossing of the Atlantic, we could become real friends.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The signature pounding of traditional Sri Lankan drumming set the tone at the annual Multicultural Festival on Saturday, Nov. 29. Hundreds filled the civic complex salons at the two-day event for a special meet-and-greet with representatives of over 30 countries. Dressed in colourful regalia, Jeyon Jeanandan, 16, stood by a table display full of instruments and various garments showcasing his ancestral origins. The Montreal-born Cornwallite and several other youths and teens captured the crowd’s attention with a stunning drum performance and stick dance. “This event is important because it shows people that Canada is a multicultural country and that it respects everyone,” said Jeanandan. Marie Morrell, event organizer and founder of the Parade of Nations for the Developmentally Challenged, started the festival in 2007. Her non-profit organization has been rallying the community for years in an effort to showcase the city’s diversity. “People need to understand we’re all immigrants,” said Morrell. “We all learn from each other. If this festival can set aside our differences, we can unite.” Ottawa’s Gundega Auzina, 21, spoke to
onlookers in a traditional folk costume, surrounded by tourism materials at the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia booth. She described the Northern European country, which is roughly 64,500 square kilometres with an estimated population of over 2 million, as 54 per cent forest. “I grew up in a culturally rich Latvian-Canadian family, with lots of singing and dancing,” said Auzina. “We’re also big fans of hockey, hearty foods, and beer.” She added that the famed Latvian Song and Dance Festival as a key component of the country’s cultural identity. Menakah Yoharaja, 20, specializes in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form. Her masterful control of rhythmic movements earned her the festival’s best dance award and a standing ovation. “Performing is a big part of my life and expresses who I am,” said Yoharaja. “It’s very important that Cornwall has this festival.” The Queens University student has lived in the city for over a decade. She was born in Sri Lanka, but spent a few years in Japan with her family before moving to Canada. The festival also boasted a market area with artists, artisans, and small business owners, as well as a flag parade at the closing ceremonies. TC Media and Seaway News are proud sponsors of the event. For more information, e-mail info@paradeofnations.com or visit www.paradeofnations.com.

Homeopathy for Constipation
The constipated person who best benefits from taking the Homeopathic Alumina is usually a thin, dry person. His stool is usually dry, his skin also. Rectum is sore, dry, itchy and can occasionally bleed. Even if he hasn’t had a bowel movement in 2-3 days, he still has little desire to go. Often that person will have very little vital heat. Whereas the constipated person who benefits from Colubrina has many ineffectual urgings to have a bowel movement, so usually only small quantities are eliminated at each attempt. There can be itching and painful hemorrhoids. Alcohol and spicy foods add to the problem. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease. So two people with the same problem may require different remedies. 5789427

Members of the Twistle Guild of Glengarry and Cornwall Newcomers Alumnae Chapter sponsored a raffle in support of Carefor Cornwall Hospice. The Twistle Guild purchased fibres and spun it into yarn over several weeks. They donated the yarn to the Newcomers Alumnae. Then many Alumnae members did the knitting. Each lady knit one or two nine-inch squares which were then assembled into a beautiful afghan to be raffled. Pictured is Sandy Collette, Fundraiser Coordinator for Carefor Hospice being presented with the check from Lise Marvell, President of Alumnae and Claudette Voet, President of Twistle Guild. Both Lise and Claudette are active members of both groups.

Goalscorers for Cornwall included Grant Cooper, Ross Craig, Kevin Hope, Tristan Elie, Cal Hofford and Zach Tierney into an empty net. The win gives Cornwall 45 points, good enough for second place in the Robinson Division. In the photo above the Colts faced the Cumberland Grads and won 4-3. Photo by bob Lefebvre www.icelevel.com.

exploits, and other tidbits of his past, immortalized in a book penned by his son Thom. A number of books signings in Cornwall have been scheduled, including Dec. 13 at the Cornwall Square, near the food court, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., while a similar event is planned for Dec. 17 at Galaxy Cinemas during Team Cornwall’s Year in Review. Thom Racine said the demand for the book has been strong, with 60 selling out at the recent We Three Girls & Co. Trunk Sale to benefit the MS Society. “People were very excited to get the printed copies,” he said. “Moe The Toe - Never My Dream” tells the story, and then some, of a shy Cornwall boy who became a man on the football field. The book includes interviews and recollections with dozens of former CFLers who lined up with, and against, the elder Racine. Moe The Toe is available at Coles, Shulman’s Men’s Wear, Cornwall Toyota, Neo-Vintage Furniture, Esso on Marleau Street, Making Waves hair salon, Pommier Jewellers and the Cornwall Public Library.

Thousands look to food banks for help Spotlight on the Agape Centre The Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) released its 2014 Hunger Report, revealing that almost 375,000 individuals – more than one third children – are turning to food banks each month. This year’s report also finds a 20 per cent spike in first time use and illustrates some surprising statistics about who is going hungry, and why poverty and hunger numbers haven’t dipped since the
2008 recession. “There are over a 1000 men, women and children in Cornwall who face hunger every day. Their stories are as diverse as the city and three counties served by the Agapè Centre: working families hit hard by the recession, women and children, seniors trying to make ends meet. The one thing they have in common is being part of a food system that desperately needs additional support.” says Alyssa
Blais, executive director of the Agapè Centre. The 2014 Hunger Report includes a Working Poor feature that explores some of the conditions affecting Ontarians who are working but struggling to make ends meet. These include areas where the provincial government is falling short on implementing policies that create long-term solutions to ending poverty and hunger in Ontario. “We are calling for the Ontario government

to implement a monthly Ontario Housing Benefit for low income tenants, based on their rent and income,” said Amanda King, Ontario Association of Food Banks. “We are also making it clear that increased payments and updates to Ontario’s social assistance programs, as well as funding for the transportation of fresh healthy foods for Ontario’s most vulnerable communities, are crucial.”

We would like to say Thank You to all our special family for all your support on the loss of the worlds best Dad & Papa. We are blessed with wonderful Aunts, Uncles, cousins and friends. Special thanks to Boulerice Funeral Home for the amazing job and support you gave us with open arms. To Father Marc Piche for a really nice service and to the amazing singer. Also to Constable Jeremy Flynn for your caring words and the wonderful support you gave to us. Thanks also to all of Jean-Louis’ neighbours. Most people will never truly value what us hunters see and these memories will always stay with me. I leave this place leaving nothing to chance. I will now ask the Lord, may I have this dance? I will now fish and hunt every day for it was God’s wish to me to stay. Don’t cry or feel sad for me. I will be the one up in the sky for all of you to see. Thanks Dad for all that you did and for all the good hunting memories that we have. You were the best and will be missed.

YOUR HOROSCOPE for the week of Decmber 5-11, 2014 ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20: Aries, expect to be called into action several times this week. You may prefer to avoid the spotlight, but that won’t be the case this week. Make the most of this opportunity. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21: Taurus, all of a sudden you are so busy it can be difficult to find a few moments to rest. Thankfully, you are able to keep up with all of the activity. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21: Gemini, seek advice from a trusted confidante as you contemplate a major lifestyle change. This person will provide valuable insight as you look to make the best decision possible. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22: Cancer, going solo on a project may not seem like the ideal situation. But you don’t want to be distracted this week, so going it alone is the best way to tackle
the tasks at hand. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23: Leo, following your gut may not always work out, but this week everything works out for the best. Curb impulsiveness as much as you can, though. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22: Virgo, although you might be dreaming of a lavish vacation and an escape from the daily grind, it’s just not possible at this time. Start saving for this dream excursion. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23: Libra, although it’s noble to offer assistance to everyone you meet, you may be struggling to take care of yourself in the process. You must put your needs first. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22: A desire to detach from others and be entirely self-sufficient can have some challenges, Scorpio. You don’t need to give up independence to have the sup-
port of others. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21: Sagittarius, your energy levels are high and there is nothing you can’t accomplish this week. Avoid extra caffeine because you’re already buzzing. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20: Find a balance between caution and carelessness, Capricorn. You cannot control every situation, and this week you may have something unexpected come your way. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18: Aquarius, if you’re on the lookout for new work opportunities, look no further than your own supervisor for guidance. He or she may be your biggest ally. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20: You have boundless creativity, Pisces, and this week you get to channel it into a special project. Don’t overextend yourself until everything gets done.

From a reader: Not all businesses only think of the almighty BUCK. One particular establishment, AUTO MD, went above and beyond the call of duty. My mother, an octogenarian, brought her car to this garage thinking there was a major problem. After an inspection and test drive, the vehicle was delivered to my mom’s residence. When she noticed she had not received an invoice, I was asked to inquire on her behalf. AUTO MD said NO CHARGE as they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. How many businesses would react this way? Kudos to AUTO MD.

Caller has three great big cheers for Ron Bergeron’s article in the Seaway News for telling it like it is, regarding city taxes and new council having its work cut out for this year. Caller also agrees that it is time to have all of Cornwall’s high paying jobs filled in with only city residents, again like in the past.

A few minutes before the church services started, the congregation was sitting in their pews and talking. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate. Soon the church was empty except for one elderly cowboy who sat calmly in his pew without moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God’s ultimate enemy was in his presence. So Satan walked up to the man and said, ‘Do you know who I am?’ The old cowboy replied, ‘Yep, sure do.’ ‘Aren’t you afraid of me?’ Satan asked. ‘Nope, sure ain’t.’ said the cowboy. ‘Don’t you realize I can kill you with one word?’ asked Satan. ‘Don’t doubt it for a minute,’ returned the old man, in an even tone. ‘Did you know that I can cause you profound, horrifying AGONY for all eternity?’ persisted Satan. ‘Yep,’ was the calm reply. ‘And you are still not afraid?’ asked Satan. ‘Nope,’ said the old cowboy. More than a little perturbed, Satan asked, ‘Why aren’t you afraid of me?’ The old cowboy calmly replied, ‘Been married to your sister for 48 years.’
