CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall police service is still owed as much as $5,000 for providing security for Cornwall Lift-Off last year and the chief says his agency would think long and hard about providing security this year unless the bill is paid. Chief Dan Parkinson confirmed Thursday to Seaway News the police service staffed the 2014 event with about 10 constables over the course of the four-day event, racking up a bill of up to $5,000 that remains unpaid. Parkinson said the bill shows up as an “unpaid receivable” in the 2014 budget, and because officers have been paid for their work taxpayers are now indirectly on the hook for that amount. “I think we’re almost talking about a cash-upfront basis,” Parkinson said of any security requests for the 2015 Lift-Off event. “We will have to consider (staffing the event) based on bill payment.” Officers typically patrol Lamoureux Park during Lift-Off, paying special attention to the beer tent area, among other locales. Terry Muir, the new chair of Lift-Off, was surprised to learn of the chief’s comments. “I’m very shocked,” he said. “It’s not secret the festival is struggling. The intention is to pay all debts. “We’re trying to satisfy as many (accounts) as possible but also assure that the event goes forward this year.”

A copy of the Cornwall Lift-Off Hot-Air Balloon Festival’s draft budget, obtained by Seaway News, suggests organizers were at one point forecasting a small deficit this year of $8,100 – with $646,250 in revenue coming in, but estimates of $654,350 in expenses. Muir suggested the document provided to this newspaper is a working document, and doesn’t represent the final plan for 2015. Instead, he suggested the Lift-Off board is continuing to make changes to its budget to mitigate expenses and pay down debt. Part of the 2015 expenses, according to the draft budget document, is some $67,050 in administrative costs that also includes previous debt accumulated by the festival. Just how much trimming the board will have to do, and what it will mean for the final product, is unclear. Lift-Off has set aside July 9-12 for its 2015 event in Lamoureux Park. When asked if the festival will go ahead this year, Muir suggested common ground will have to be found. “It will depend on how organizations such as the Cornwall police service, work with the event,” he said. “(If) everyone gives us some breathing room there will be an event.” The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall will no longer be the title sponsor for Lift-Off, ending a relationship with the festival that dates back a few years in that capacity. But the Kinsmen Club is expected to continue to partner with Lift-Off in another capacity and a new title sponsor will be named.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Public service workers fed up with the Liberal government’s push towards privatization opened a strike headquarters in Cornwall. Inside the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) local 453 membership office on Cornwall Centre Road, a small but dedicated group of over 30 union members rallied in solidarity on Friday (Feb. 6). Newly minted picket signs emblazoned with boldface letters read, ‘Public service, not private profits,” “I’m worth more than zero,” and “Privatization always costs taxpayers more.” The current collective agreement expired Dec. 31, 2014. And with negotiations at a standstill, OPSEU says it’s being forced into a strike situation. “A few weeks ago, the Wynne government came to the table and said we’re not going to bargain a contract anymore, we want to bargain a strike,” said David Lundy, OPSEU regional vice president for Region 4. In addition to creating dozens of picket signs, union members, on their lunch hours, also readied the new headquarters, designated picket captains, and registered for strike pay. “We’re doing everything that’s necessary to be prepared should we be forced out,” said Lundy. “But of course our goal is to get a fair contract, not to end up on the sidewalk.” The issue boiled over in Cornwall on Jan. 30, as OPSEU held an information picket line at the Service Ontario office at the intersection of

Union members lined up at a new “strike headquarters” at the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) local 453 membership office in Cornwall, on Feb. 6, 2015. Adam Brazeau Second and Pitt streets. Lisa Chalmers, with the local 453 communications team, said the union represents 650 public service workers in Cornwall and SDG. Lundy said a strike could happen after an essential services agreement between the government and OPSEU is signed. Chalmers said local jobs potentially impacted range from maintenance workers at the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, artisans at Upper Canada Village, parole officers, “inspectors that are monitoring environmental issues,” amongst others. Lundy added: “OPSEU believes that when you work for a living, you should earn a living wage, and it should come with the benefits to support a family, and the ability to retire with dignity. The direction of the provincial government now is a real attack not just on public services, but on the family unit itself.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - The numbers that mattered were on the pledge sheet, not the scoreboard. The 37th annual Tim Hortons’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters Cornwall & District took over Olympia Bowl and Nativity Lanes on Saturday, Feb. 7. “This is our main fundraiser of the year and the energy here is amazing,” said Danielle Brisson, a program coordinator with the agency. Some $68,000 was raised at the event, which also included games in Chesterville Sunday. “It’s team building, and a lot of the groups see it as that,” said Bowl for Kids’ Sake chair David Murphy. Fifteen years later, and staff at Job Zone d’Emploi in Cornwall couldn’t agree more.

Dressed in outlandish wigs and loud accessories, 10 members representing two teams helped raise hundred of dollars. “The children, that’s what this is all about,” said Kim Winchester, job developer. “So they can grow up with great role models and have things to look forward to. Big Brothers Big Sisters needs the support and the money from the community to help them do that.” Murphy applauded the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall for donating $5,000 to the cause in addition to the pledges raised by the club’s numerous teams. The funds support seven free BBBS mentoring programs offered to the community. Despite being able to boast dozens of active matches, there are currently over 110 kids from Cornwall and SDG on a waiting list. Seaway News is a proud sponsor of the event and bowled under the team name TC Media Kingpins.

Councillors frustrated with slow snow removal in parking lots

DENTURE CLINIC

CORNWALL, Ontario – Frustrated city councillors want to know why it is taking so long to clear public parking lots and spaces of snow and ice that continues to pile up this winter. Coun. Maurice Dupelle complained that many municipal parking spaces, not to mention the nine city parking lots, have still not been cleared of snow, despite the fact that we are well into February. He further suggested some residents have fallen and injured themselves in the lots, or trying to reach parking meters, and that the city could find itself in a liability situation. “We’re going to have lawsuits from people falling an injuring themselves in these parking lots,” Dupelle said. “If this is the only extent of snow we

LunaFest: SASS, Port Theatre put women’s issues on silver screen Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

6070746

CORNWALL, Ontario - A travelling, fundraising short film festival dedicated to promoting women in cinema is ready to roar in Cornwall. LunaFest will be premiering at the Port Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 28. All proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund based in San Francisco, and, in major part, Sexual Assault Support Services of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry – Akwesasne (SDG&A). “We hope this event sparks a conversation about women’s issues and all the amazing filmmakers,”said SASS executive director Angela Vinet.

The nine short films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. “It tackles a lot of the things women go through, but it’s not too heavy, families are very welcome to join us,” said Vinet. Tickets are $15 in advance ($20 at the door) and can be purchased at Summit Health Fitness, Echo Trends, Salon on Second, SASS, and the Port (132 Montreal Road). The event will be licensed to sell beer and alcohol. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show starts at 7:00 p.m.

SASS, a non-profit organization based in Cornwall, provides free support to victims/survivors of sexual violence. Services include accompaniment to the police station, hospital, or court, one-on-one counseling, information/support groups, as well as public education. With a fundraising goal of $6,000, Vinet’s vision of a happy ending to LunaFest would fade out on a packed theatre. Larry Sylvain, co-owner of the Port, echoed those sentiments. “It was important to help SASS with this event because we really need their services in the community,” said Sylvain, in between setting up the theatre for a Canadian Cancer Society movie fundraiser. He encourages non-profits and charitable organizations, as well as businesses and individuals to reach out for their events. In addition to competing with a cineplex, the stark reality of convert or die facing vintage theatres across North America has come to a head. The spools of 35 mm ribbon still used at the Port have turned into a tangled mess. Now major studios only send digital cinema packages, or DCPs. Old technology means (almost) no new flicks for the Port and a lukewarm response from local moviegoers. The price tag to go digital: $60,000. A staggering amount for a neighborhood movie theatre where all regular tickets are now $7.50 and snacks sell as low as a dollar. “We’re struggling,” said Sylvain. “We can’t access any first-run movies; the major studios won’t send us anything.”

Larry Sylvain, co-owner of the Port Theatre, stands with Angela Vinet (right), SASS of SDG&A executive director, and Jessika Thompson, SASS public education coordinator, to promote LunaFest. Adam Brazeau

Fundraising attempts have been made to no avail. “We’ve tried public pleas,” he said. “But we’re hopefully going to nail it down this year. And fortunately we have some new indie films coming up that we are able to show.” As part of the Bishop’s Pix Movie Series presented by the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, the Port will also be screening a documentary called ‘The Rule’ between Feb. 20- Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. For more information on LunaFest, visit sassforwomen.ca, call the Port box office at (613) 933-4547 or join www.facebook.com/liveattheport.

Council requests report on reversing Second Street lane decision Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - City council will take a second look at a plan that saw a busy city street reduced to two lanes. Coun. Mark MacDonald floated the idea of “putting things back in order” on Second Street East by switching back to four lanes of traffic from two. He wants to task administration with preparing a report on the feasibility of such a move. He’s got some support already. “I have no problem supporting something like that,” said Coun. Andre Rivette. “There are

“(But) it doesn’t make sense to have bike lanes on Second Street, or they could have used something a couple of blocks over.” Coun. Brock Frost agrees. “I think the entire bike lane was a mistake. Not in general, but on Second Street,” he said. “There are much better streets that could have been used, including Fourth and Fifth (streets) which are three lanes wide, and one direction.” But not everyone is feeling the heat. Coun. Carilyne Hebert said she wants to give the bicycle lanes one summer to see how much they will be used.

some issues there.” Councillors have been feeling the heat from angry motorists who are upset with the move last summer that reduced Second Street East - a busy Cornwall thoroughfare - to two lanes from four, with addition of a centre turning lane and bicycle lanes. “Traffic safety, congestion, the amount of time people are spending in their vehicles. There’s a number of factors to consider,” said MacDonald, who was quick to point out he isn’t seeking to reverse the move just yet - he wants to know how much it would cost. “I know we’re going to be dealing with a lot of major issues.

“I don’t think we should be wasting staff time. It would be a shame to go back. Bring it back at the end of next summer,” he said. “Let’s not forget the money in switching all this. We have no money.” It’s unclear just how much it will cost to reverse the move. Coun. Bernadette Clement agreed. “I’m sensing I want to give more time. I’m starting to get some positive reaction, as well,” she said. “I’m hoping the report also addresses trouble spots. There may be certain intersections more problematic than others. Change is tough. Sometimes we have to give it a year.”

30 years of comic book history alive and well on Pitt Street Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - You’ll have to forgive Randy Sauve, he forgot his Spider-Man underwear at home. The owner of Fantasy Realm, the Cornwall version of Mecca for all things superheroes and alter egos, is instead wearing the prototypical guise of the comic book store owner - black jeans and a black short-sleeved shirt. His hair is a little shorter, and there are a few more lines on his face, but after 30 years of selling comics, sports paraphernalia, magic props and the odd Pokemon card, one would concede that things are bound to change a little. Fantasy Realm has been a fixture in downtown Cornwall for three decades, rolling with a landscape that has changed literally (Pitt Street was a mall when the doors opened) and figuratively (the World Wide Web back then was spun by his beloved Spider-Man). Sauve’s encyclopedic knowledge of superheroes, and his comic books, are some of the few constants in a business that has evolved over the last 30 years. So is the passion for his craft. “I knew there were comic book readers out there, I just had to find them,” he said of the early days of Fantasy Realm, in February 1985, when he worked full-time at another job and opened the store as a way to feed his, and others’, addiction to the genre. “Word of mouth was all I had to go by. “When I opened I didn’t even have parking. But it didn’t matter, because most of my customers

were coming in on their bikes or skateboards.” Perhaps the biggest thing that has changed over the years is that, for all intents and purposes, today it’s cool (or cooler?) to be a nerd. TV shows like the Big Bang Theory and The Walking Dead, and the film series attached to the Marvel universe have made comic books and superheroes more popular (and lucrative) than ever. Sauve has been able to capitalize on the demand for Superman, Captain America, the Fantastic Four and The Flash, while also supplementing his business with other hobbies and collectibles. In 1980s Dungeons and Dragons was popular, by the early 1990s it was sports cards...then a few years later magic...and then Pokemon...now people reach out online to feed their addiction but comics have been a fundamental part of his business all the way. “That’s always been the passion,” said Sauve. Things have now come full circle. Saturday’s at Fantasy Realm are known informally as “Family Day” because the men who were children in the 80s when his store opened, are now returning with their own kids to swap stories about the good guys, the baddies and the adventures they enjoy. Sauve has been steeped in discussion since being a child himself. “As a teenager as I delivered my paper route I would pass the apartment complex on Fourth Street and I envisioned this comic book shop, with multiple rooms that had different themes,”he said. “And then when I was working at Carl’s Smoke Shop, Carl used to let me hang some comic books

on the wall. That really opened the door for me.” To be certain, like any other businesses there have been ups and downs. At one point there were three stores affiliated with Fantasy Realm, including locations in the Eastcourt Mall and another in Brockville. Things were restructured in the late 1990s and shoe-horned back into the Pitt Street locale. The Internet has also helped Sauve’s business, both locally and around the world. “I have customers in Belgium and Puerto Rico,” Sauve gave as examples. “I get stuff in, set it aside and then send it out to them. “But with the Internet I wanted to think small, not big. If you’re a guy in Morrisburg, you have to drive almost an hour in any direction to find a comics shop. But now, you can just point and click.” Which character does a self-confessed comics junky identify with the most? The answer is simple: Spider-Man. Spider-Man. Spider-Man. “It always has been,”said Sauve, particularly the storylines of the late 1970s when he was a teenager. “He was a regular person when he was Peter Parker - he was picked on and bullied. “But as Spider-Man he enjoyed doing right by people.” Even the name “Fantasy Realm” is a reference

Randy Sauve, owner of Fantasy Realm in Cornwall, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, shows off a caricature of himself in full Spider-Man regalia complete by local artist James Lapierre. to Spider-Man. “With great power there must also come great responsibility ... and so a legend is born and a new name is added to the roster of those who make the world of fantasy the most exciting realm of all,” reads a line from Amazing Fantasy Number 15 the first appearance of Spider-Man. “I could never see myself doing anything else,” said Sauve, 53. “I don’t have any regrets about any of the stuff that I have done.”

The bike lanes are here to stay TODD LIHOU

happen all the time on busy streets, and people SHOULD relax when they’re behind the wheel - but the reality is they don’t. I can’t find anyone against bike lanes per se – there are, though, a host of others (me included) opposed to the lane reductions on Second and the aforementioned safety concerns that have been created. Should the city be wearing this? Are the rest of us to blame for taking a blasé approach to following the decisions made at committee levels? Are some of us north of 40 (just barely folks) becoming too curmudgeon when it comes to change? It’s probably a little of everything. The Second Street changes are authored in the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (a copy of which, I’m sure, can be found under every pillow in the city), which was complete in 2010. If one leafs through the 121 pages (!) contained in the report they will find, on Page 59, the details concerning the Second Street changes. “The proposed bikeway would basically reduce the four travel lanes from Yates Avenue to Lynwood Drive/Lefebvre Avenue to two travel lanes and a centre two-way left-turn lane, with bike lanes. This type of lane reconfiguration, known as a “road diet”, has been successfully implemented on arterials in North America that carry up to 20,000 vehicles a day and more.” A “road diet”…I love new buzzwords (rolls

todd.lihou@tc.tc

At the risk of beating a dead horse, here we go with the Second Street traffic debacle… again. First of all, we need to make one thing clear: those bicycle lanes aren’t going anywhere. It says right here there aren’t enough votes around the city council table to reverse the decision that turned Second into two lanes from four. Those councillors on the fence, and others who are trumpeting the addition of the bike lanes, outnumber others who may feel the city erred when it redesigned one of Cornwall’s busiest streets. Proponents are already crowing that there hasn’t been enough time to study the effectiveness of the new bicycle lanes. So we’re going to get at least one summer of them… and by then city council and the rest of us will be on to a new all-consuming crisis and the bike lanes will be relegated to the back burner. It also says right here that I’ve got a big fat ‘I told you so’ column ready to go the minute a cyclist gets clipped by a car, piloted by a frustrated motorist. It was only a few years ago that someone was killed while WALKING down Second Street East when they were accidentally hit by a vehicle backing out of a driveway. Accidents

eyes). Anyway, proponents will point out their intentions, in black and white, were recorded years ago. And they would be right…it’s just that they’re buried in a five-year-old report that wasn’t effectively communicated with the public. Oh sure, there were public meetings and news reports on Cornwall’s new plan for bike lanes in the city – which to the lay person looks wonderful. “More bike lanes in Cornwall? What a great idea!” But I would argue the message should have been: “We’re going to put more bike

lanes in Cornwall – but it’s going to mean changes to Second Street …is that something you can live with?” Then an old fashioned debate could have taken place. Unfortunately, that isn’t what we got. For the most part, motorists woke from their fog last year to news that the city was making changes to their beloved Second Street. In our house it came via a Facebook post from by buddy Kevin Lajoie. Should we have been paying closer attention? Of course…maybe we will from now on because this type of finger-pointing situation is exactly what you get when you’re asleep at the wheel (pun fully intended).

mates” at the cash across from her. They were having an in depth conversation about her experience she had at the nail salon earlier in the day. She went off listing the terrible mistakes they had made on her all-important nails. I remember her specifically saying how unprofessional the person was doing the task. I bet she did not even realize if it was a man or woman that she was putting groceries through for. She even stopped at one point to lean over the counter and show her friend where they screwed up the nail polish. When I finally got to my turn for her to start with my order, she never once looked at me to even acknowledge me. She continued on with her conversation scanning item after item. When I tried to stop her to ask about a discrepancy in price of one of the items, she had already put through three more items because she did not realize I was talking to her. The younger generation seems to just want to glaze over the time they have to be at work.

Try to find whatever way possible to get through the part time hours they have to work to satisfy their parents or make enough money to get them through the week. It used to be nice to have a little conversation with the cashier while your groceries were going through. Most people only look at you when they ask if you are going to pay with cash or debit. I think the hospitality industry is going downhill more and more as time goes by. We might as well have self-checkout because we don’t get any interaction as it is now. I now make it a point to say hello to whomever it is passing me through to both make their day a little brighter and make sure no mistakes are made that they may miss if not paying attention. I try to go to check-outs with the older cashiers because they seem to still care about the customer. Raymond Pond, Cornwall

when he headed for Raleigh, N.C. and set up shop. If Willie were to serve his entire sentence, an unlikely prospect, he would be getting out at age 84. A well-informed friend said a more likely scenario is that Willie will do four to five years in the U.S. (in addition to the two years he served prior to sentencing) before becoming eligible for a transfer to a Canadian prison and early parole. By the time he hits the streets in Canada, he would be 70 years old. If he really didn’t hide any of the Ponzi scheme loot, he will be living on old age security and minimum Canada Pension Plan cheques. And you can bet that hockey fans in this town won’t be organizing a tag day for him. Odd, isn’t it? For years Willie Wise bathed in the high life using other people’s money. Today, he is living the low life on other people’s money. Willie has taken up residence in a tax-funded U.S. federal prison after being (finally) sentenced to 21 years for his role in swindling hundreds of investors, some out of their retirement savings, in a Ponzi scheme that he ran through a bogus bank. He has exchanged his tailored business suits for a onesize fits all orange prison jump suit with a number affixed above the right breast pocket. He’ll earn around 50 cents a day performing mindless prison duties. One of the prison destinations mentioned was the same medium security prison that houses Ponzi king Bernie Madoff. Could be some interesting conversations. With time already served, The Wise Guy is looking at 19 years, albeit given the non-violent nature of the crime he won’t be working the rock pile. It is one heck of a finish for a guy who lived in a milliondollar home, had his own jet, partied on a Caribbean island, uncorked $1,000 bottles of wine when partying with his pals, some from Cornwall, his hometown, and blessed hot-looking girlfriends with $10,000 a month “gifts”. According to court documents, Willie gave his wife a $12,000 a month allowance, just for putting up with his philandering. He once dispatched his jet and crew to Massena airport to pick up some old Cornwall friends and bring them to a

lavish New Year’s Eve party held at his Caribbean digs. Just to show that he was a nice guy, one of Willie’s friends talked him into donating a big chunk of money to the Cornwall Community Hospital. Any record of that “gift” has been quietly expunged by the hospital. Not sure if the money was turned over to U.S. authorities. And why not play fast and loose. Investigators estimate that Willie’s Ponzi scheme pulled in at least $75 million from investors. Two years ago, before giving up to U.S. authorities, Wise told a Toronto newspaper that he was broke. That is a lot of spending. Some folks believe that he managed to tuck away some of that money under a mattress. “I don’t have billions squirrelled away,” he told the Toronto newspaper. “I don’t even have hundreds (tucked away).” There is speculation that Willie turned himself over to U.S. authorities because he felt safer living in a jail cell than being on the lam, not only from the law but certain people he had bilked. Willie grew up in Cornwall and by all accounts fit the pampered brat mould like a glove. He came back to his hometown after getting a law degree and set up shop. He got elected to city council (198385) and started developing land. Then he bought a piece of the Cornwall Royals hockey club and ended up owning most of it. He moved the team to Newmarket and a year later sold it for $950,000, most of which went to cover the team’s debts. The team is now called the Sarnia Sting. That’s

Council to eye cutting weekly recycling pickup

CORNWALL, Ontario – City council is looking at halving the number of times a year curbside recycling pick-up takes place. Councillors David Murphy and Maurice Dupelle want to find out if any money can be saved by going with once every other week, as opposed to weekly, pickup. “All things have to be on the table. This is a tough budget,” said Murphy. The city is currently eyeing a 5.5 per cent tax levy hike that no one around the council table has an appetite for. Murphy said if a report to the city’s budget committee shows significant savings can be found, then council needs to act. “We have to look at it,” he said. It’s his belief the savings could total a few hundred thousand dollars - and the city wouldn’t exactly be breaking the mould if it curbed the number of times recycling is picked up. Other municipalities in Ontario do the same. It was pointed out to Murphy that many household recycling bins could be overflowing after sitting for two weeks, and he suggested the city could provide additional blue boxes to residents - and even more could be purchased by homeowners for a nominal fee.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The city won’t be hiring an arts co-ordinator this year – and Coun. Brock Frost is not happy. The rookie councillor railed against his colleagues Monday night before they turfed his plan to hire an arts and culture co-ordinator, which would have added $75,000 a year in additional spending. “The cost is actually less than I suspected. We spend more than that in overpriced legal fees,” said Frost. “$75,000 is a drop in the budget, guys. We should be ashamed of ourselves. “How further are we going to keep pushing this down to the future? My question is when are we going to take arts and culture seriously in our city? Right now it’s a tab in the planning budget. This was a huge campaign issue and one that most of us supported.” His comments touched a nerve among other councillors, who took exception to the strong words. “I’m not ashamed of myself. What I said is we should all pull together,” said Coun. Andre Rivette. Rivette pointed to the fact that a feasibility study is underway to determine what it will take to create an arts and culture centre in Cornwall. Most other councillors agreed that study should be done first before spending taxpayer money. “To come up and just give somebody $75,000 and not have any game plan to go with it…that culture plan is not even finished yet,” said Rivette. “Let’s get it finished and see what we really need. Cornwall’s art scene, though, continues to take it on the chin. The same city report suggests that money set aside in the 2015 budget to study the idea of creating an arts centre in Cornwall isn’t enough. For full report see cornwallseawaynews.com

Bridal Dreams Ceremony, officiant, and reception It’s never too early to reserve

Have you made the big decision to get married? Then there’s no time to lose, especially with regard to the venue for both the ceremony and the reception. It’s no secret that the best dates get snapped up quickly, especially for the most beautiful settings. Even the services of the marriage officiant should be reserved early. The first step is to determine whether you want a religious or civil wedding. Then comes the choice of reception venue. The possibilities abound: reception hall, conference centre, restaurant, hotel, country inn, golf club, outfitter, ski resort, spa, vi neyard, orchard, farm, sugar shack, museum, botanical garden, marina, cruise ship, or cottage. The options depend only on your imagination. Narrow down your list of choices by finding out if they can accommodate everyone on your guest list. Ask about the services and equip ment available, such as ta bles and chairs, decorations, catering, entertainment, liquor license, bathrooms, kitchen area, and audio and video equipment. Be sure to check what is and what isn’t included in the package.

The legalities

You want to unite your destinies abroad? Find out about marriage legalities in your destination country so you can be sure your union is legally watertight. You and your fiancé should also discuss a marriage contract that clarifies your financial contributions and responsibilities to each other, especially if either of you has children from another marriage. It may not seem very romantic, or one of you may feel the other is preparing to abandon the marriage before it even gets started, but that’s not what it’s all about. A prenuptial agreement shows that you take marriage seriously, as a legal and moral commitment. A future spouse who is well informed before saying “I do” is a worthy counterpart.

Announce your engagement in your community newspaper

20 - Thursday, February 12, 2015

- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

Once you have become engaged, nothing makes it more official than posting your engagement picture and announcement of your upcoming nuptials in your local newspaper. This is when becoming engaged and planning a wedding really starts to sink in. Telephone or e-mail your newspaper to get the information that is required by them. Normally a newspaper will have a form for you to fill out with the appropriate information that they need to complete an engagement announcement. Hopefully by now you have had an engagement picture taken to include with your engagement announcement. Engagement pictures can be as formal or informal as you want them to be. The style of picture that you choose to have taken depends on your personalities and your lifestyle. Whether you choose to have your engagement photograph taken at a department store photography centre or an independent photography studio is up to you and your overall wedding budget. Be sure to ask the newspaper staff what their photograph requirements are. You’ll need to verify what the size requirement is (4x6 or 5x7) and if they will keep or return the photograph. Be sure to order extra pictures from your photographer for engagement announcement submissions. There are no rules to how many newspapers to announce your engagement in. The average number is two and this is based on one announcement in the bride’s hometown and one announcement in the groom’s hometown. 6044840

Bridal Dreams The 12 essentials of a dream wedding A wedding is the event of a lifetime. This special day has to be perfect, hence the importance of taking care of even the smallest of organizational details. You don’t want to forget anything, whether it’s a reservation, a fitting, or a trial run for your menu and hairstyle. Here’s a checklist of the 12 key elements you’ll need to take care of along the path to your dream wedding.

1. The ceremony, the officiant, and the reception Are you going to have a civil or religious wedding? Have you asked your best friend to unite you in wedlock? And will the reception be in the country, on a cruise ship, or in a hotel ballroom? Make sure the location you choose can easily accommodate all your guests. You’ll also want to think about signing a marriage contract or prenuptial agreement.

2. The meal and the wedding cake There are loads of things to think about when organizing the meal: the format; the menu; a children’s menu; the bar; and the wedding cake. Say, why not set up a candy bar? And don’t forget to ask about your guests’ food allergies.

3. The atmosphere

How will you immortalize your wedding: photos, videos, or both? Remember to plan for an indoor photo session in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate on your big day.

5. The invitations Don’t wait until the last minute to send out your invitations if you want all the important people in your life to be with you for this celebration. Remember to indicate the theme and dress code. And do think about including self-addressed stamped envelopes for those essential RSVPs.

6. Wedding bands Your wedding bands are the symbols of your love; choose them with care. Do you both want gold, silver, or with diamonds? Discreet or extravagant? With or without an engraving?

7. Beauty appointments Hairstyle, manicure, waxing, and makeup: leave nothing to chance if you want to be stunning on your big day. Make your appointments for just the right time; you don’t want your roots to be visible under your veil!

8. The dress, suit, and accessories The outfits of bride, groom, and wedding party should be coordinated. Will you be a vision in white or will you choose to add a colourful note? And will the perfect dress feature something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue?

9. Flowers and decorations Have you chosen a colour scheme for your flowers and decorative accessories? What are your favourite flowers? How will the tables be dressed?

What theme will you choose to set the tone for your wedding: a colour, a culture, a historical period? Which DJ will get your guests out on the dance floor? Will you surprise everyone with a unique first dance?

10. Transportation Will you arrive by boat, car, horsedrawn carriage, or maybe even by parachute? Whatever your choice, be sure to take your dress and the weather into consideration.

You will need a certified copy of your marriage licence for many of these - be sure to have it handy!

11. Guest favours A personalized trinket, a gourmet sample, or a home decor object: have you found the perfect wedding favour to thank your guests for joining you?

12. The honeymoon A truly idyllic honeymoon shouldn’t break your budget. Are you tempted by an exotic island or a vibrant city? Choose the destination and the timing carefully to stay in line with your means. Get out your calendar, get set, and reserve! Make your reservations early in order to secure the top experts in every domain. Remember that their talents are in big demand.

Four smart ways to invite your guests to table What you give your guests to eat at your wedding reception shouldn’t be decided lightly, especially as the meal generally swallows up a large part of the wedding budget. Here are a few options.

1. A banquet

2. Tapas

3. A cocktail party This format involves an informal seating plan that allows guests to circulate and nibble on a variety of finger foods throughout the evening. It’s a great way to encourage mingling among your guests.

4. A buffet Simple and affordable, a buffet has the advantage of offering a wider variety of food. Guests get to serve themselves, according to their specific tastes.

Discuss the different options with the person responsible for the reception. Whatever format you choose, always provide options for the children and ask guests about allergies, intolerances, and dietary laws. Think about whether you want to offer an open bar or a cash bar, and whether you want to serve a dessert in addition to your wedding cake. These days, other sweet ideas are gaining in popularity at receptions, including cupcakes and all-youcan-eat candy bars. Ask your caterer about all the latest trends.

6063236

It’s possible to replace the traditional three course meal with tapas, or assorted samples of different dishes. These can be a meal in themselves when served at the table and in sufficient quantities.

www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Seaway News - Thursday, February 12, 2015 - 23

This is the classic wedding dinner format. It’s often preceded by a cocktail reception with appetizers and a cash- or open bar. The meal, which includes several courses, is served to guests at their tables by wait staff. The cost varies according to the number of courses and the choice and variety of dishes on offer.

Bridal Dreams The most beautiful bride from head to toe The excitement, joy, and anticipation you’ll feel on the big day will make you radiant with beauty. After all, there’s nothing like a good dose of happiness to put a blush on the cheeks, a sparkle in the eyes, and a beautiful smile on every bride’s face. But to truly glow from head to toe, perhaps you should think about consulting some beauty professionals.

1. The hair stylist A stunning bride needs a fabulous hairstyle. Whichever style appeals to you, you’ll want to entrust your hair to the expert hands of a real hair salon professional. Remember to

make two appointments: one to try different hairstyles, and another for the big day.

2. The esthetician Manicure, pedicure, hair remo val, fa cial, eyelash extensions, and massage: a wedding is the perfect excuse to pamper your body. Not to mention that stray body hairs, dry skin, and damaged nails are not on the guest list! Don’t forget to make two separate appointments for your makeup as well.

3. The dentist Because laughter is the right of every newly married couple, treat yourself to a teeth Future brides should make their appointments early; the best beauty professionals are always in demand. whitening treatment for a sparkling smile.

A beautiful and organized bride:

• Make your appointments as soon as possible. • Carry a photo of your dress and accessories to all your appointments, along with inspiring images from magazines. • Find out the best time to pamper yourself with the various treatments. This way you won’t have any regrets, such as hair colouring done too early (hello, roots!) or a microdermabrasion done too close to your big day.

The bride

On your big day all eyes will be on you. Even though the pure white wedding dress remains a classic, many brides break with tradition by opting for a more colourful outfit. No matter what your preference, be sure to choose a dress that enhances your figure and is comfortable to wear.

The groom

Even though the groom isn’t supposed to see the dress before the ceremony, he should at least know its colour so that your outfits are somewhat harmonized. A light or a dark suit goes well with a white dress, while a light-toned suit (yellow or ivory) is suitable alongside a dark dress. Whatever the case, choose a suit made of top quality material, such as linen, wool, or raw silk.

One thing is certain about your wedding: the bride and groom are going to be the centre of attention all day long. So be sure to think colour and style coordination when making your fashion choices.

Accessories add the finishing touch to both your outfits. For the bride: choose a veil (or head accessory), jewellery, shoes, and a bouquet that enhance your dress. Don’t forget to have something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. For the groom: choose between a tie, cravat, or bow tie. And to look like a perfect gentleman, dare to wear a hat, vest, cufflinks, and pocket square. You can leave out the matching cummerbund, though; alas, they belong to another time. And don’t forget, the bridal party’s suits and dresses should harmonize with the bride and groom’s outfits.

Bridal Dreams The perfect wedding band to tie the knot Since time immemorial, wedding bands have symbolized the continuity of marriage. Legend has it that a wedding ring is customarily worn on the left ring finger because of the vena amoris, or “vein of love”; it was thought to have a uniquely direct connection to the heart. We know today that all the fingers have similar privileges, but your choice of wedding ring is still as important as ever. After all, you’re hoping that it will adorn your ring finger until death do you part. Your tastes, your gender, and especially your budget are the main factors to consider in choosing the right band.

Surprise!

The metal

• Gold. Whether it’s yellow, pink, or white, gold is always a safe bet. The price varies according to the number of Karats (abbreviated by K or kt). • Platinum. This metal is attractive and very durable, but more expensive. • Titanium. It’s less expensive and doesn’t scratch or fade, but it isn’t as shiny as gold or platinum. • Silver. This is typically the most affordable option, but pure silver oxidizes over time.

Discretion vs. extravagance

You might enjoy having a ring that’s striated, bejeweled, or engraved with a personal message from your beloved. There’s nothing to stop you from being creative and commissioning tailor-made wedding bands from your jeweler.

Gold, platinum, silver, or diamonds: what will you choose for your dream wedding ring? Men typically prefer to opt for discretion and comfort; jewellery without gemstones is less fragile and thus more popular with them. And even though rings are available in an endless range of possibilities, most women still choose diamonds, which are, of course, forever.

Favours from Mother Nature

test runs so you can choose the perfect combination. Prepare a make-up kit for any touch-up jobs on your big day. •Leave a guest book at the entrance of the reception hall. It’s a great souvenir to keep, along with your photo album. • Leave a disposable camera on every table so that guests can record magical moments during the reception. • Give yourself enough time to find a wedding gown that really suits your personality.

Decorative favours

Nature lovers, this gift is for you: a pretty box filled with potting soil and some tiny succulents so your guests will leave with some genuine greenery. Or, opt for seeds to symbolize the beginning of your new life together.

A magnet for the fridge, coasters, photos, or snow globes: think traditional souvenir trinkets. They’ll feature a photo of you both that your guests will treasure.

Scented favours

Luxury favours

Scented candles are perfect for most weddings, as they’re available in all shapes and colours. You could also consider giving bath salts or shell-shaped soaps for a nautical theme, or rose potpourris for a vintage wedding.

Don’t let your guests leave without a little favour to thank them for joining you.

Be warned, small budgets should steer clear of this suggestion. Some brides and grooms go all out in order to impress their guests; if that’s you, why not offer a box of cigars, a small item of jewellery, or a bottle of good wine. This is especially suitable for smaller weddings.

Good tips to keep in mind • Avoid giving important jobs to the parents of the bride and groom — unless they really want to be involved that way. Instead, let them enjoy being with the guests. • If you intend to create a gift list, be sure to put it on the Internet so that it will be easily accessible to everyone. • If small children will be at the reception, plan to have a space available where they can play and a quiet room where they can sleep. • Take photographs of your hair and makeup

Bridal Dreams An invitation like no other

Five destination ideas for your honeymoon

The countdown has started; sending out your wedding invitations makes it all seem official. It is an important step indeed. In addition to announcing your wedding, this little piece of cardstock, tucked so neatly into its pretty envelope, gives your guests a taste of the celebrations to come. Their curiosity will definitely be aroused. To show all this promise, your invitation should include: • the names of the bride and groom (include those of the respective parents if you want to follow the tradition of the parents hosting the wedding) • the location, date, and time of the ceremony • RSVP cards and envelopes (encourage your guests to confirm their presence by including a pre-stamped reply card) • an invitation to the reception (feel free to invite only certain guests to the party following the ceremony; specify the theme, dress code, location, and menu choices)

While that convention is alive and well, many couples today choose a modern take on dessert, such as a selection of small cupcakes and pastries, a pyramid of chocolate éclairs, or even a variety of tarts and other sweets. At least two months before the big day, meet with your caterer or pastry cook to taste several flavour combinations. Choose the texture you want — perhaps a sponge cake, a tiramisu, or even a cheesecake. Next comes the choice of flavour and the filling. Imagine a chocolate, carrot, or vanilla cake embellished with a filling of cream, caramel, or a generous layer of ganache. For the icing, or just for decorations to

adorn a plain cake, you might opt for a firm sugar paste that can be coloured and cut into shapes and decorations. Butter cream icing is softer and is similar to the frosting normally found on cakes. The queen of all cake coverings is, without a doubt, marzipan, which adds a texture and flavour without compare. The cost of a cake is always calculated by the number of portions, so while a stunning seven-layer cake can feed an army of guests, you’ll have to be reasonable if you have a limited budget. The type of cake, the decorations, and the difficulty of its construction will also influence the price.

From small intimate gatherings to large exquisite affairs, we work with every budget.

Cornwall was not part of my past, but Toronto was. Anyone who was brought up in that city, or any other large Canadian city during the days of my childhood, will have shared the following with me. Here are some of the highlights of the year I was born: Germany invaded Poland; Franco became dictator of Spain; New York hosted the World’s Fair; the Heinkel He 178 became the first jet to fly. The following are some of my early memories in the Parkdale area of Toronto. Our home was heated by with coal, delivered by horse drawn wagons. Vendors brought the following products to our home: crusty rye bread, hearty Kaiser buns,

JUST PLUG IT IN – If you have an old house, you just can’t plug anything in without first checking the orientation of the power cord’s male end to verify it’s of a vintage compatible with the outlet. (Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk)

When my toddler years were behind me, the male plugs and the female outlets were dissimilar two-prong polarized. By the time I became old enough to drive, building codes had mandated three-prong grounded. It sure was a different world back then.

We earned money for going to the movies and buying balsa wood to make model airplanes by shovelling snow and collecting bottles that offered a deposit return. My first real job was delivering for a drug store. Other boys delivered goods for grocery stores. Their bikes had heavy iron baskets attached directly to the front of the frame. Even though the handlebars swung left and right, the heavy load of pop bottles, potatoes and canned goods did not. The front wheel had to be smaller than the rear. dairy products and blocks of ice. Money for the bread was left on the front window sill of our Sorauren Avenue home. The bottles of un-homogenized milk, packets of cottage cheese and jars of sour cream were left in the ‘milk hole’ at the back of the house. My friends and I used to filch shards of ice off the ice wagon. My mom used to threaten us with, “Don’t you dare eat any of that ice – you’ll get polio!” Scrap collectors plied the residential areas with their horse drawn wagons calling out “Harry, hoot! Harry hoot!” They were scrounging any kind of scrap metal. The clang of a hand-bell announced the approach of the knife-sharpener’s cart with its grindstone and files, offering to sharpen scissors, knives and saws. The popcorn and toffee-apple vendor slowly pedalled his three-wheeled cart around the neighbourhood. A little stove heated a kettle of butter and powered a high-pitched whistle like a tea-kettle. One year has gone by, when we think back over the years and remember all the special things, we realize that you’re not only a wonderful grandson, but a unique person. We made some great memories when you were growing up. Having you in our life was the greatest gift we could have ever asked for... But it was way too short a time.

A shopper’s delight at Purely Handmade show in Cornwall Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The retro-futuristic glamour of steampunk fashion was too much to resist for Judy Kroon. Hundreds of shoppers flocked to the civic complex for the Purely Handmade Cornwall Art and Craft Show featuring 35 exhibitors on Saturday, Feb. 7. “This hat is the perfect score,” said Kroon as she browsed the ES Essential & Co. booth. The Cornwallite leaves for Holland on Tuesday, where she’ll show off the unique headpiece at the Carnival festival. Kroon has attended

the event three times and describes it as a “European version of Mardi Gras” and “like being in a Wizard of Oz movie.” She never expected to find such a perfectly suited addition to her festival attire at a local show like this. The caliber of craftsmanship inspired her to make purchases at several booths. Seeing Kroon ecstatic over her work was welcomed praise for Ottawa’s Elaine Stuart. For nearly two years, she has specialized in steampunk-inspired handcrafted beaded spider, pins, Victorian hats and choker necklaces, and hair accessories. Stuart described steampunk as “an era that

small businesses here today,” said Reid. She estimated roughly 1,000 visitors attended. Reid added: “The venue is great and its close proximity to Ottawa and Montreal helps draw a diverse crowd.” After making new connections for upcoming projects, Stuart noted that the networking opportunities were highly beneficial as a small business owner as well.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG have a story to tell. Nearly 70 local young authors have penned and illustrated the third instalment of an ongoing ‘Doing the Write Thing’ series of anti-bullying books. Belonging-Appartenance, a collection of eight short stories, was recently launched at the BGC 506 Clubhouse. “If kids are being bullied, they’ll know how to deal with it better,” said contributing author Malika Marleau, 12. BGC senior staff member Trevor Smith said

the creative process helps kids twofold: the first is openly talking about bullying, which he claims is a greater problem these days than ever before. The second: being able to create. “It’s special for them because they actually get to see a finished product,” Smith added. He noted that seven of BGC’s eight after school program sites contributed one short story each, and the Francophone location submitted two. Another young scribe, Benjamin Weight, 11, considers the book a must-read for an unlikely audience. “If bullies check it out they might realize they’re hurting other people’s feelings,” said Weight.

The book sells for $10 and can be purchased at the BGC clubhouse on First Street East. Former Cornwall principal and local theatre veteran Bill Roddy gave a special reading at the book launch event. “This project goes along with our ‘Pink Shirt’ Day anti-bullying fundraiser and movement on February 25,” said Smith.

Shirts in all sizes are $10 and are for sale at Scotiabank and Baxtrom’s YIG. In 2014, the non-profit agency served over 1,600 youth in Cornwall and SDG. Currently, there are 400 children in BGC after school programs, which are run at eight different locations. There are also two teen programs that serve hundreds of youth.

The Panthers are the final entry into the “High School Challenge” for the 2014-15 season. CCVS, ESLC and SLSS also took part in the promotion in which the school with the best attendance at their Colts game will win 300 tickets to the final home game of the regular season. The Colts are 18-4-2-1 on home ice this season while the Rangers have won their last 3 games coming into this Thursday’s match up. Cornwall (31-16-4-2) sits in 2nd place in the Robinson Division (4th overall) with 68 points. The Rangers (26-26-0-1) are 3rd in the Yzerman Division with 53 points. The Colts travel to Gloucester Friday night to wrap up the home-and-home series before returning home for a special Family Day matinee vs Nepean Raiders. Please note Monday’s game time (3pm) as the Colts have a special on ticket prices for that game - $25 (plus HST) for two adults and two children’s tickets (a $9 saving). The specially priced tickets are available from now until game day at the Colts office, downstairs at the Civic Complex.

SHARK ATTACK: Renee Lortie, a silent leader making noise CORNWALL, Ontario - St. Lawrence College Sharks women’s hockey team member Renee Lortie has been named the SLC athlete of the week. The forward/right-winger is in her first year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program through Laurentian University. She is expected to graduate from SLC-Cornwall in 2018. Previously, Lortie attended the Ontario Hockey Academy and thereafter pursued a scholarship at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. She graduated in 2014 with a Bachelors Degree in Biology. Lortie played three out of those four years in women’s hockey. As a freshman, she won a national title in Division III and rookie of the year in the ECAC east conference. “I’m extremely honoured and privileged to receive athlete of the week,” said Lortie, who received the distinguished title on Jan. 26. “I’m grateful to be a part of the team and to bring my experiences and knowledge as apart of being victorious.”

According to her coaches, she pays attention to the finer details in the game, ensuring she fulfills her responsibilities at both ends of the ice. Lortie was put on the ice in key moments at the Fleming College Invitational where the Sharks went a perfect 4-0, outscoring their opponents 20-3. She won important face-offs and was a key penalty killer, especially in the semi-finals against the host Fleming where the Sharks successfully killed three consecutive penalties. “We have a team full of talent and skill in which we should undoubtedly capture the provincial title in March,” said Lortie. The young athlete says juggling academics and sports doesn’t take up as much time as it did when she played NCAA hockey, because she’s a part-time student with transfer credits from her biology degree, however, Lortie does have to miss clinical hours to attend tournaments. “The school is extremely supportive of athletes and will accommodate make up days. With that said, being a student athlete is greatly about having time management skills. With previously acquiring those skills, I’m able to excel both on and off the ice,” she said.

MOONLIGHT RIDE: Taking it on the road Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - With the full moon lighting up the night sky, this week, the timing was perfect for local music duo, Moonlight Ride, to premier, to the public, their first original song, Rushing for Red Lights. The congenial pair, Art Levert, on guitar, and Mike Pilon, on percussion, who have been playing out together, in and around the area, for the last year, are looking forward to even more of that, taking their act “on tour.” Some of us remember Levert from the “gentle jam” open mic nights he hosted in the early 2000s, at then-called Papa Gedoro’s (now Schnitzel’s). He would follow that with a band called Frasier Creek, which played in and around the area for a stint. Pilon, who says that his love of drumming started at the tender age of three, “banging on pots and pans,” met Levert, a couple of years ago, when they began playing in a band together. The band didn’t last, but their friendship did, and the rest is history. Performing what Levert calls “crowd pleasing music,” like the Eagles, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, Dwight Yoakam. … Classic Rock, Country, Blues,” they are hoping to add many more originals to the show, as time goes on. In the meantime, check them out at www. facebook.com/pages/Moonlight-Ride/6855068

98187017?ref=ts&fref=ts. Here’s just some of the live music happening in and around the area. Rock Bottom will be Live at Lola’s, on February 7. This month at the Jet Set Pub (NavCentre) Sean Harley, on the 7th; Bruce Ciccarelli, on the 13th; Brian and Tim, Feb. 20; and Sean Harley, on Feb. 27. For something completely different, the Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s production of the comedy/musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot, opens February 13, and run 14, 20 , 21 at 7:30, and February 15, at 1:30, at Aultsville Theatre. Visit www.aultsvilletheatre.com, for further information. The Def Leppard tribute, Hysteria, will be live on stage, at La Maison, February 28. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 the day of show. Also on February 28, Retro Night, at Aultsville Theatre features tributes to ABBA, The Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, and Cher. This is a fundraiser for Roy & Cher’s Animal Rescue. Tickets are $46.50 (plus applicable surcharges) and available at the Cornwall Civic Complex Box Office Mon-Fri, 8:30am-4:30pm (613) 938-9400 , online www. admission.com or Aultsville Theatre box office 1 hour before show time.

Reader: These bike lanes seemed like a pretty good idea at the time… Not so sure anymore. It’s creating more traffic and confusion as to where the lanes are! They are so poorly indicated, we do not know where they begin or end! Barely a week left until Cornwall’s version of the Academy Awards – the Business Excellence Awards. The best part of the awards at this time of year is that it means winter is nearly OVER. Bumped into Bob Kilger the other day – he’s giving his battle with cancer a helluva fight. They opt to select the most faithful female officer and after a series of selections, interviews and testing, only three candidates are left. For the final selection, the recruiting officer puts the women in front of a metal door and hand them a gun. “We must be sure that you follow our instructions, and you must obey these instructions, whatever the circumstances. Behind this door, you will find your husband sitting in a chair and you will kill him.” The first says: You’re not serious? I will never kill my husband. You are not the woman for this job. The officer gives the second woman the same instructions. She takes the gun and enters the room. All is quiet for about five minutes and then the woman comes back, in tears. “I tried, but I can not kill my husband.” You also are not made for this job. Take your husband and go home. Finally, it is the turn of the third. The officer gives the same guidelines, stating she has to kill her husband. She takes the gun and enters the room. There are shots heard, silence, then another and then another. Screams are heard as well as loud banging noises on the walls and furniture being smashed. After a few minutes, everything becomes calm. The door opens slowly and the woman comes out. She wipes the sweat from her brow and said, “Who is the idiot that put blanks in the gun! I had to finish him with the chair! “.

Word around the campfire is city council is considering a code of conduct that will govern city councillors and the actions of others in the gallery. Interesting to see what new protocols will be put in place.

Did you know that the origin “Close but no cigar!” and its variant ‘nice try, but no cigar’, are of US origin and date from the mid-20th century. Fairground stalls gave out cigars as prizes, and this is the most likely source, although there’s no definitive evidence to prove that.
