"We plan on doing this for many years and hopefully doubling the amount each time," said Draper. Leger thanked the community for its generosity and Cornwall Spine Care Plus+ patients and staff for continued support. "We're really happy with the results," said Leger. "There are a lot of people in Cornwall who need help, so it's means a lot that we can make their lives a little easier." The Salvation Army food bank serves an average of 350 families each month.

Ye Old Fish ‘N Chip Shop in its final stages of reconstruction on Jan. 17, 2015. Adam Brazeau

Ye Old English Fish ‘N Chip reopening ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A downtown Cornwall restaurant that’s been closed for nearly three and a half months after a vehicle plowed into its storefront will finally reopen in a few weeks. “I’m excited to get the doors back open everything should be ready by early February at the latest,” said Mike Henstock. The 44-year-old Cornwall resident owns and lives at Ye Old English Fish ‘N Chip Shop on First Street East. His parents opened the popular eatery 18 years ago, and he took over a decade later. After a brief hiatus, Henstock’s family legacy will usher in a new era in dining. It seems Cornwall is still hungry for more, since each of his visits to the Cornwall Square are filled with questions about

the restaurant’s return. The exterior still has a small ways to go, but at least the building has a door and walls again. Next are the siding and a front window. Henstock boasted that the interior has really shaped up and is near completion. “We hope to see everyone back at the restaurant,” he said. He invites anyone with an appetite to the reopening which will be advertised in local media. Regular patrons can expect the shop to be restored to its original state, including the menu. A 49-year-old Akwesasne man crashed into the establishment, which is located at 9 First Street East between Pitt and Sydney streets, on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at approximately 2:45 a.m., police sources said. Witnesses at the scene believed the incident was a case of drunk driving. The man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80.

ing submissions from community agencies seeking municipal funding. O’Shaughnessy said while it’s his belief council should target a tax freeze for 2015, reality may be something different. “The challenges we face are quite difficult,” he said. Council will be hamstrung by the fact that transfer payments from senior levels of government are shrinking, while internal pressures like

collective agreements and the rising cost of goods and services are increasing. Council put the finishing touches to committee appointments Monday, rubberstamping a series of appointments made by O’Shaughnessy to a slew of municipal committees on top of the budget steering body. For a full list of committee appointments check out our report at cornwallseawaynews.com.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy expects to step aside so that another member of council can chair crucial budget meetings coming up in the next few weeks. For years former councillor Denis Carr chaired the budget steering committee meetings, but he was defeated in the October municipal election.

O’Shaughnessy said last Wednesday, on the heels of city committee appointments going public, that he plans on stepping aside for the allimportant budget committee sessions as chair. “As a matter of fact I’d like to see a councillor take it,” he said. “I don’t think it’s automatic that I chair it.” All of council will sit on the budget committee this year. In 2014 council was split in two, with one group handling the budget and the other hear-

Wine festival toast of the city ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The glass was more than half-full with rich flavours, paired with fun and fundraising at the 12th annual Seaway International Wine Festival. Nearly 500 elegantly dressed guests filled two stylishly decorated ballrooms at Ramada Inn Cornwall on Saturday, Jan. 17. This year the wine festival benefitted both the United Way of Cornwall/SDG and

Cornwall charity Rachel’s Kids. After a dozen years, the event has collected over $100,000 for local charities and groups. Scott Lecky, owner/general manager of the hotel and conference centre, said it raises between $12,000 to $15,000 annually. “Every dollar helps and it all goes to the kids,” said Rachel Navaneelan. For $100 a ticket, wine lovers and connoisseurs were treated to dozens of varieties of regional and international wines, Jennifer Matheson (left), Louis Cardinal, Michelle Contant, and Michel Contant (right) raise their glasses at the 12th annual Seaway International Wine Festival at Ramada Inn Cornwall on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015. With a deadline extension already passed, the charitable organization is roughly $70,000 shy of its mark. “I don’t have a definitive number, but donations are still coming in and that’s encouraging,” said Lori Greer, executive director of the local United Way. The campaign has surpassed the 90 per cent mark. “If it takes a little longer to get wherever we end up, it’s okay. We’re extremely pleased with the generosity we’ve received so far,” she said.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A new development in the city core promises to add to the urban renewal under way in Cornwall. Officials cut the ribbon on Promenade Miller, and 30-unit condo complex that will be built later this year on First Street East. The complex is being built adjacent to the former Si Miller Arena property and proponents wanted to pay homage to old hockey rink that was home to the Cornwall Royals and Cornwall Colts during its heyday. Jean Leger, who on behalf of Remax Cornwall will be handling the sale of the units, said the construction of the $5.5-million property means more opportunities for those looking to own their own home - especially seniors – who now have an

opportunity to live close to downtown and its amenities. “It’s urban renewal at its best,” he said. “It revitalizes the downtown core.” The condos are being built by C.H. Clement Construction, which just wrapped up a condo build at the corner of York and Third streets in Cornwall and has another planned for the north end of McConnell Avenue near Eleventh Street. “A lot of seniors are buying these places,” said Leger. The condos will sell for less than $200,000 each and come with amenities like heated floors and open concept. The condos are being built on what once occupied older buildings or open space. Mike Gervais of C.H. Clement Construction said similar condo projects are popping up in Casselman, Hawkesbury and Rockland.

Masquer-Aid gala being held Feb. 13

“5

MINUTES LONGER WITHOUT A SMOKE.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – The cost of treating cancer patients is often measured in the how much it costs for medication and hospital stays. But as any family that has grappled with the deadly disease knows, there’s a lot more to fighting cancer than that. A popular fundraising event to help Candlelighters – an agency that supports young cancer patients and their families – is returning next month. Masquer-Aid raises money for Candlelighters’ parking program – a fund that families can access to help the costly fees associated with leaving their vehicles at hospitals and clinics while loved ones are treated.

“It’s huge,” said Jocelyn Lamont, Candlelighters executive director. “The funds raised impact all of our families.” Last year more than $30,000 was raised at the Masquer-Aid gala in Cornwall, which more than covered the costs of the parking program. The second annual Masquer-Aid gala takes place Feb. 13 at the Ramada Inn, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $75 and available at Life’s Little Pleasures, Scotiabank. EMPOWER THE GIRL:

100 young women learn about image, self-confidence TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

A collection of Grade 6 students make dreamcatchers at Empower the Girl, a series of workshops and mentoring sessions Wednesday at Viscount Alexander School in Cornwall. “I feel like I can help them with their selfconfidence and their image of themselves,” she said. About 100 Grade 6 girls from all over Cornwall congregated at Viscount Alexander School to hear positive messages of image and

self-confidence. Local stakeholders from a variety of local groups and organizations taught young women about nutrition, proper exercise and social interactions. Resource teacher Jenn Carr said the mes-

sage is strong, and important. “It’s great to have that support from community agencies,” she said. The first-year event could return next year, and feature a component for young boys as well.

CORNWALL, Ontario - When Lexie Jasiewicz was in Grade 6, life wasn’t fun. She was bullied, had a low opinion of herself, and generally cared little about the world or her surroundings. What a difference a few years can make. Jasiewicz, 16, and now a Grade 11 student at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, has turned her life around to the point that she is educating other Grade 6 girls about the power of positive self-image and confidence. She was one of several leaders at Empower the Girl, a series of workshops and mentoring sessions Wednesday at Viscount Alexander School in Cornwall. Jasiewicz said helping young girls is important, and she would have relished the opportunity at that age to learn more about self-confidence and body image. “In Grade 6 I didn’t have any respect for myself,” she said. “I didn’t care how I looked for felt as a person. “Then I took a look at myself one day, and said ‘What are you doing?’” Jasiewicz has turned her life around. She’s now a part of the Eastern Ontario Training Board’s ‘Young Women Are Leaders’ program and is helping to mentor young women.

South Stormont likely to keep status quo on recording meetings: Hart TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – The deputy mayor in South Stormont said Wednesday her municipality will likely continue to allow the public to record meetings at the township hall. Much was made this week of South Stormont’s decision to seek legal advice on changing policies that would lead to prohibiting the recording of public meetings by journalists and/or members of the public. Hart said council is looking at all the options it has available to it, but has not made a decision. It was put to Hart that instead of making a blanket policy, council could address specific concerns at individual meetings if it felt journalists or members of the public were being too zealous in recording proceedings or taking pictures. “At the end of the day we’ll probably keep (the status quo),” she said in an interview. “I believe that is what is going to happen. “It was just preliminary discussions.”

Critics and others have lambasted South Stormont council for even considering such a ban, complaining that free speech and municipal transparency would be unfairly mitigated by such a policy change. “We certainly have no objection to having residents know all the business of their township,” said Hart. “This has to do with gonzo reporting in the past year. “We’re trying to do our due diligence.” South Stormont Mayor Jim Bancroft has taken heat for suggesting a prohibition on recording council meetings is no different than a ban on cameras at live performances like those at the nearby Upper Canada Playhouse. Bancroft was not immediately available for comment. The City of Cornwall allows the recording of its meetings and picture-taking. The city also broadcasts its meeting via the web, and the sessions are televised by TV Cogeco. South Stormont is mulling a similar move to broadcast its meetings on the web.

Spring job fair unites both sides of border ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall and Akwesasne have formed an alliance to help lower unemployment and assist job seekers in finding work. The Social Development Council of Cornwall (SDC), Akwesasne Area Management Board (AAMB), Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA), and Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) Economic

Canadian employers in one location. “It has grown to the point we don’t have a proper venue - and the civic complex remedies that,” said Roundpoint. “We’re neighbours. Neither one us is going anywhere, and it’s time to work together.” The expanded job fair is expected to draw over 30 employers. MCA director of the department of Tehotiiennawakon Jim Ransom considers the event a win-win situation where both the city

Development Agencies are jointly hosting a job fair at the Cornwall Civic Complex on March 26. Organizers gathered at a meet-and-greet Jan. 14 in an effort to strengthen ties between the two neighbouring communities. “It makes a lot of sense for us to combine efforts,” said AAMB manager Russell Roundpoint. In previous years, Akwesasne has held the International Job Fair in various community locations. Thousands of participants took full advantage of networking with U.S. and

and Akwesasne will benefit. “Last year, we did an economic study and we have a strong relationship with Cornwall,” said Ransom. “We spend $34.1 million dollars here from the Canadian half of Akwesasne.” “We welcome the opportunity to work more closely together. There’s an interdependence we’d like to explore further.” A memorandum of understanding was signed between Cornwall and Akwesasne at the introductory press conference.

INTRODUCING THE ALL-NEW 2015 NISSAN MURANO

OPINION

Target decision leaves 350 locals looking for answers...and hope TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

We call this an old fashioned kick in the teeth. Word came down last week that Target Canada is closing all of its stores in this country, ending a failed attempt to break into the retail market north of the border. It also means a massive distribution centre in Cornwall’s industrial park is on life support – and the buzzards are circling. The company finally confirmed, after a small delay, the Eleven Points Logistics Centre, opened with much fanfare in 2013 as another example of Cornwall’s shift from mill community to distribution hub, will close. Prior to the closure confirmation employees were told to go home the day the store closures were announced, to grapple with the news. A company doesn’t send people home for the day if the news isn’t bad, and at the time some who preferred to remain anonymous privately told me they will once again be looking for a job.

One can use all the euphemisms they like, but it boild down to this: the Target decision sucks – with a capital ‘S’. Is there a silver lining in all this? Probably. Maybe. The fact that Target could not get itself on track in Canada is the real reason the Eleven Points Distribution Centre appears headed for closure. It has nothing to do with the employees, management or the city’s strategic location as a great place for a logistics hub. In short, this was a business decision made by a company that couldn’t get its business on track – in Canada, anyway. Cornwall is still a great place for a distribution centre. You’ve already heard the rhetoric: we’re right on the U.S. border with access to rail, a deep-sea port and a network of highways. We’re also just down the road from Ottawa, Montreal and to a lesser degree Toronto. It was that way before Target’s announcement ruined our day last week, and it’s still that way now.

Which means, in all likelihood, Cornwall’s new identity as a distribution hub will remain intact despute the Eleven Points closure. Of course, in the short term that doesn’t mean very much. People, as many as 350, are destined for a date with the employment office. I’ve been there – once again, it sucks. The good news, and I know about 350 people looking for some right now, is there are already rumours other major distribution companies are eyeing the facility. Just how realistic these rumours are remains to be seen, but Cornwall economic development manager Mark Boileau told me his office often receives inquiries from such businesses with an interest in Cornwall. Anyone who wants a building, and a trained work force – cheap – might just have Cornwall in their cross hairs now, where they wouldn’t have before. FedEx, Loblaws...rumours are swirling with big names. Time will tell if the speculation is attached to

any degree of reality. Of course, on the flipside, it’s not like there’s a distribution company on every street corner looking for a facility and hundreds of employees. As Boileau put it to me: “It’s a short list.” And that’s the key. I have every confidence, even at this early juncture, that the Eleven Points facility will remain a distribution hub, even if a different sign is hanging out front. The big question will be just how long it takes to make such a dream into a reality. With the ink barely dry on the Target pink slips, I’m betting we’re probably in for a wait. You’ve heard before how we’re a strong community. You’ve read, probably in this space, how we often rise above challenges like the one put to us in Cornwall today. We will, again. But it comes as cold comfort, in 350 homes in the city that will grapple with terrible news. It sucks… there’s no other way to describe it.

What happened to these tried and true ‘remedies’? The sniffle season is in full swing and for the folks who make and sell over-the-counter cold remedies, the cash registers are singing a billion-dollar tune. Back in the “good old days”, for some of us that is the Fifties and Sixties, mothers and grandmothers swore by some strange, by today’s standards, concoctions to fight colds and flu. They aren’t the kind of “cures” one will find on the Mayo Clinic website. Nevertheless, many still swear by them. Among the old-time treatments: A sore throat was treated by painting liberal amounts of Vicks Vapo-Rub on the front of the neck and wrapping it with a woollen sock which was secured by a safety pin before going to bed. Vapo-Rub was also used on the chest, up the nose and steamed over water. Somebody I knows swears that a nagging cough can be suppressed by rubbing Vicks on the bottom of your feet before going to bed. I can remember my grandparents talking about treating a chest cold by greasing the chest with a mixture of coal oil and lard covered by flannel and pinned to woollen long johns. It wasn’t for teetotallers, but a hot toddy was a popular cold remedy, especially among the Irish. One recipe called for an ounce of whisky and an ounce of lemon juice mixed with eight ounces of boiling water. For teetotallers, the whisky was replaced with a teaspoon of honey. How about home-made chicken soup laced with cayenne or chili pepper and garlic cloves?

Or, sucking on sugar cubes (do they still make them?) dabbed in camphor. One of the old-time remedies still recommended by medical folks is massaging a sore throat by gargling with warm water and salt. Old-timers used a gargle mixture made of warm water, honey and vinegar. My grandmother made her own cough syrup: juice from a boiled lemon (skin on) was squeezed into a mixture of glycerin and honey. Ah, then there was the mustard plaster or poultice. The paste made from mustard powder, flour and hot water was spread over the chest and covered with flannel. I had an uncle who swore by onion sandwiches. An aunt drank a tea brew that included cinnamon, from a piece of cinnamon stick sold at the general store, honey and two garlic cloves. Camphorated oil, which goes back to the days of Marco Polo, was another standby. It is mentioned in the Battle Hymn of the Republic - “John Brown’s baby had a cold upon its chest so he rubbed it with camphorated oil.” Cold sufferers can find comfort, so the story goes, in warm elderberry wine. Elderberry juice is said to be a cure for colds. Not sure about this one, but a friend said his grandfather claimed that he cured a cold by boiling 10 corn shucks and drinking the brew straight up. Another oldfashioned cold remedy for a sore throat was Iodine. It was rubbed on both sides of the throat with cotton swabs. About Dec. 1 mothers would break out the long johns for the kids

which was a good reason to look forward to spring. And mothers would tell their kids who weren’t bundled up properly, “you’ll catch your death!” TRIVIA ANSWER The church steeple over the main entrance to the Parkway Hotel is from St. Paul’s United Church, First and Sydney streets. The church was sold for $400,000 and torn down in 1978 to make room for the Cornwall Square parking garage. The congregation moved up the street to Knox United. The original church was Methodist. TRIVIA What city facility was at Sixth and Adolphus streets before construction of a senior citizens’ apartment building? SEEN AND HEARD Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon had one of the best attendance records for votes in the House. He missed just a handful of the 269 votes in 2014. The worst attendance belongs to Quebec Independent MP Sana Hassainia who showed up for just 16 of the 269 votes. According to a Globe and Mail survey, since 2006 there have been 34 MPs who never voted in the House, never spoke during debates and never attended a committee meeting. And no, they aren’t deceased. One moonlights as a tour bus driver. MPs earn a base salary of $163,700. THIS AND THAT Don’t know how this has happened but for three years I have been getting emails from one of those anti-Harper groups. The emails sent to my account are addressed to Dr. V.A. Gina. You would think that they would figure out that somebody is

pulling their - er, leg.... Reader notes that after Cecil Barr left Cornwall to run a new Highway 401 service centre near Chatham, the Esso gas station at 15 Montreal Rd. (Jan. 7 trivia) operated until 1978 as Germain’s Gas Station. ... Retired teacher Dave “Pro” McCleary making a great recovery at home from recent open heart surgery in Ottawa. There was a time when a patient spent more time recovering in hospital after appendectomy surgery than heart bypass surgery. ACROSS THE POND St. Lawrence County sales tax revenue in 2014 came in $2 million short of a budgeted $58.5M. Fewer Canadians, mostly from the Cornwall area, shopping in places like Massena is part of the reason. “We have fewer people making the trek over (the bridge),” a spokesperson told the Watertown Times. When the new low level bridge and more efficient CBSA port opened, the Americans figured it would bring more Canadian shoppers across the border. SPORTS STUFF When he coached the Cornwall Royals, Floyd Crawford tried to get Gord Wood, head scout and director of player personnel, to trade Ray Sheppard because “he won’t back check.” Wood told Floyd, “Are you crazy? All he is going to do is get you 60 goals.” Well, Wood was wrong on the goal production. Sheppard scored 81 goals that season, added 61 helpers for a league high 142 points and was named the OHL’s most valuable player. What that about sometimes the best trade is the one you don’t make.

OPINION

Slaughtered like insects OPINION COLUMN  SULTAN JESSA While we were recovering from the horrendous crimes committed in France, I noticed another headline in a Toronto newspaper which read “People slaughtered like insects.” This headline was about an attack on Nigerian civilians who were mercilessly slaughtered by another extremist group calling itself Boko Haram loosely translated as “western education is a sin.” Survivors of an assault Islamist militants that killed a large number of civilians – some reliable sources – put the death toll to about 2,000. One witness said people were slaughtered like insects.

This carnage occurred around Baga, a town in Borno state that lies in the northeastern corner of Nigeria near the border with Chad. Amnesty International confirm the death toll could be even higher than 2,000. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other countries have condemned the Baga bloodshed in which Boko Haram group opened fire. This terrible carnage came soon after the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris. How many people protested about this incident? How many heads of state and governments attended the funeral? There wasn’t even a remembrance ceremony. Boko Haram is an

repeat it here again. Islam does not advocate violence and senseless slaughters. The so-called extremist Islamist groups have killed more Muslims than members of any other religious sect. And this is the fact. These groups are simply hijacking a religion that wants no part of these atrocities. Islamist extremism has become a banner for many misguided groups and individuals seeking a justification for violence. Young boys and girls, many of them from Western countries, have abandoned their peaceful lives to kill innocent people. The Baga massacre did not garner the attention it so rightly deserved. This is indeed sad.

extremist Islamist organization carrying out barbarism in parts of Africa. This group is so heavily armed that even the Nigerian army has not been able to do much to wipe out this group from the West African country. The terrorist group of Boko Haram is based on its own warped interpretation of Islam. More and more terrorist groups are now popping up in troubled spots like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and other unstable countries. Look at how powerful the self-declared Islamic State or ISIS has become. Other terrorist groups go by the name of Al-Qaeda and Al-Shabadh in Somalia. This group has been racking havoc in Kenya. I have said it before and will

FRANK BURELLE: ‘As kids we all draw - I just never stopped’ ROXANNE DELAGE CORNWALL, Ontario - Ever since he was a child, local multi-media artist, Frank Burelle’s quest has been to feed his voracious appetite to create. “As kids, we all draw,” said Burelle. “I just never stopped.” “Whenever you draw as an adult, it is part of childhood that survived growing up,” he said. “That’s the way I see it; I just never stopped. Everybody should have a creative output, anything, it balances people off.” Although it would seem that he was born with a sketch pad and pencil in his hands, Burelle remembers the defining moment, in grade seven, that spurred him on to go beyond simple doodling, and to take his art more seriously. “These guys had a comic book club, I thought it was really cool and I asked if I could join,” he said. “They said, ‘let’s see what you can do,’ so I went home and produced the best stuff I ever had, and the ‘boss’ of the club said that it was garbage and that I couldn’t (join). I was so upset. So I went home and I just started drawing non-stop.”

“I never bothered with them, again; I didn’t want to be in their club.” he adds, with a laugh. “None of them draw anymore, I don’t think.” In high school, Burelle said that he took as many art classes as possible, and praised some of his teachers who saw his potential and focus. “Some teachers let me submit illustrated reports, as long as my illustrations were historically or scientifically accurate. I love them for that.” Not all teachers were as supportive, said Burelle, who admits that he wasn’t a great student. He remembers being told by his guidance counsellor that he was wasting his time with art, and that he should go into plumbing or carpentry. “When you see a passion in someone, you 63194 don’t supress it, or try toDrive drive it out of them.Docket: ” 115 Thorncliffe Park Torontostopped Ontario trying,” said Burelle would Client: 247 - Mazda “I never M4H 1M1 Job has Name: Jan Ont News eventually go on to study animation, and Tel 416•696•2853 Lara Vanderheide produced a series of documentaries on Contact: which spent the past 20 years practicingProduction and teaching the Lost Villages, and others. art in various capacities. SPAMALOT: Camelot, it is not... Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - And now, for something completely different, The Seaway Valley Theatre Company is thick in rehearsal for its upcoming production of the Tony Award winning, Spamalot. Lovingly ripped off from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, as they say, the musical offers the same broad silliness as the original, with some great song and dance numbers added into the mix, explains the show’s director, Lesley Ellam. Set in 925 AD, the plot is loosely based on King Arthur’s search for the Holy Grail, she explained. “Now, whether that’s a vessel or a cup or something inside yourself, it’s up to the audience to decide.” Along the way, the king and his knights encounter an array of wonderful creatures, including the Lady of the Lake, the French taunters, killer rabbits, flying cows, and the list goes on and on and on. The production is choreographed by Amy Mallyon, with musical direction by local legend, Brian McCartney, who will head a 13 piece, live orchestra. “The music is great,” said Ellam. “The audience will leave tapping their toes and singing along; it’s one of those infectious shows. One of the more recognizable numbers is also one from the film, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, which incidentally is the

number one requested funeral songs, in England. With a cast of 30, on stage, and over 80 people working behind the scenes, Ellam, who’s not a stranger to large productions, having cut her teeth on the mammoth task of putting together Chicago, a couple of years ago, still has her hands full. Some of the challenges, she said this time, is working with more men and keeping the focus. “The play is funny and the cast is still laughing (during rehearsal). “That’s a good sign, if they think it’s funny.” Although Ellam calls the experience a “crazy undertaking,” she would not have it any differently. She explains it this way. “I played sports, growing up. I loved playing sports; that got me through life. This is different. It’s the same team work, all working towards a goal together, but we’re not winning or losing. We’re just winning.” Ellam, who warns that there is some adult content in the show, says that the audience can expect to be totally entertained. “The sets the costumes, the songs and dances will not let you down. It’s going to be a great night of entertainment.” Monty Python’s Spamalot runs February 13, 14, 20, 21 at 7:30pm, with a matinée on Feb 15, at 1:30, at Aultsville Theatre. Tickets are available online at Admission.com or at the Cornwall Civic Complex box office.

River Kings fan cashes in at weekend home game THOM RACINE Just when you think you have seen everything, something happens right out of the blue that makes you pinch yourself. At the beginning of this turmoil ridden LNAH season, River Kings (then) new owner Brock Frost came up with an idea to hold a shoot-out during the second intermission. He secured Dominion Lending’s Jenni MacDonald as a sponsor for one of those impossible ‘one in a million’ shoot-outs with a $25,000 prize. We have seen them before, contestants shoot the puck 3/4’s the length of the ice surface and hope to deliver the puck into the net, through a hole big enough for only the puck. As many times as I have seen this contest over he years and as impossible as it seems, it has been done before. The amazing part for me - it is the second time that I have witnessed, in person, this seemingly impossible shot go in. But this time, I had the best seat in the house, or at least one of them. During the 1988 OHL season, every team in the league held the contest and the winners take was $10,000. At a game in Oshawa one

Sunday night that season, the Royals game against the Generals was suddenly transformed into a buzz of disbelief throughout the old Aud, a buzz which continued long into the third period after a legally blind man, fired his 3/4 length ‘hoper’ through the hole to win the big prize. It’s a story I have told now and then, so when Rod Rivette stepped onto the ice as Saturday night’s Dominion Lending contestant, the jeers and cat calls from the North Side crew were just part of the lead up to a very special moment. Rod spent $5 on three chances to have his name pulled and he was pretty excited when (as PA announcer) I announced his name midway through the second period. Rod worked at the Bob Turner arena as a kid and they had a board similar in set up and during down times, he and the other rink rats would try their luck, coming close, but never succeeding. New River Kings owner Steve Moreau asked me when he took over, to ask the contestant what they would do with the money if they won. Donate it, share it, buy a car were just some of the answers I have received. Rod Rivette didn’t now what he would do and settled on “buy my friends a round at La

Rod Rivette and the author watch his shot. Maison.” He moved to his right, so that being a left-handed shooter gave him the entire net to look at. Then, after a few ‘Canadian Boy’ stick handle moves, Rod took a step forward and let it go. I had a good look at it and as the puck crossed center ice, I knew it had a great chance, it was dead on target and as it approached the net it was hard to tell if the puck knicked the left edge, but no matter, it went through that tiny

hole and Rod Rivette lifted the roof off the Ed Lumley Arena. “You always dream you can make that shot, but to actually do it is something special, I will never forget it,” said Rod afterwards. The 1,460 fans that saw it will never forget it either Rod. Kudos to Jenni MacDonald who stood by the River Kings with her contest and really, with all the bad in our world, didn’t that just feel great. Well done Rod.

have a fault indication for a while after it is reinstalled. You will not harm the vehicle by removing the battery. From very cold weather, it may take up to 2 hours to warm the battery sufficiently to increase its available amperage. Consult the owner’s manual. Almost every vehicle today has cold-starting instructions in the Operator’s Manual that instruct you to use a small amount of throttle to help with a cold start. Refer to your vehicle’s Operator’s Manual for further information. If you do not have the owner’s manual for your car, you can order one from a car dealer, find one at a salvage yard or look for one at an auto parts chain.

Freezing cold weather can take a toll on car batteries. That’s why it’s important to be prepared for the winter season and the car trouble that might ensue. If you suspect the battery may be drained from sitting several days, shut the car’s doors and turn off all accessories. This includes the heater blower, radio and lights. This will help to maximize your starting power. However, if you have driven the car more than 20 minutes since the last start and within the last day, you will get some benefit to exercising the battery a while before trying to start the car. Turn the key to start and hold it for up to 10 seconds. Don’t hold it for any longer than 10 seconds, as overworking the starter can cause it to overheat. If the engine fails to crank, wait a couple of minutes and try again. Let the battery recover if the car fails to start. If your car does not start after ten to twenty seconds of cranking, stop and wait for a minute or two before attempting to start again. This gives the battery time to recover, and it will have warmed a bit. Mostly, it allows the starter motor to cool down. If the car is coming close to starting, but seems sluggish, give it a break and try again. If the battery won’t make any effort to turn the engine over, it is discharged and you’re going to need to jump it. If after trying many times the starter is still sluggish, you may need to heat up the battery. You can do this by removing it and bringing it inside, but be aware you may

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Tips for making the most of condo living 3. Consider Colour It’s a fact that pale hues advance, thus expanding a room, while dark tones recede and shrink a space. So for a small room, unless you intentionally want to make it feel snug, choose lighter tones and keep the colours harmonious. Colour can be used to connect rooms—the lines between rooms can virtually dissolve with a shared colour scheme. 4. Add Texture Remember that texture can be used in place of pattern to add interest without interruption. Pirouette window shadings, with soft adjustable horizontal fabric vanes attached to a sheer backing, come in stylish textured fabrics. 5. Absorb Sound Interior furnishings can help block out noisy neighbours and street traffic. All Hunter Douglas products are rated for sound absorption and certain styles of its Vignette Modern Roman shades earn five stars for sound absorption. 6. Add Height

High ceilings can make a small room appear larger. One way to fool the eye and make them seem higher is to add trim five feet up on the wall and paint everything above—including the ceiling—a darker shade than the walls below. 7. Choose Furnishings with Flexibility Use chairs that can move from one room to the other, tables that stack or provide storage space and free-standing bookcases that can serve as room dividers. 8. Entertain with Ease Even if you don’t have a formal dining room, invite your friends over and create a moveable feast by setting up a buffet on your kitchen counter. 9. Make Rooms Multi-task Between meals, the dining table can be used for arts and crafts projects, homework or a home office. Children’s rooms need to accommodate bedroom, playroom and study space. With built-ins and flexible furniture, even a small child’s room can do it all. 10. Break the Rules But break them carefully. If you have a

large piece of furniture you adore, use it. A lot of tiny pieces may actually make a room look even smaller. If you love dark colours, take care of contrasting planes by using a similar shade on floors, furnishings and ceiling.

BATHROOMS Sharon Fortier

Shar’s Tip of the Week How do you tell a dirty bathroom? By the way it smells. A big part of bathroom cleaning is killing germs, because even when a bathroom looks okay, bacteria can cause offensive odours. Always use a spray cleaner with a disinfectant agent. Everything in the average bathroom except the mirror can be cleaned this way in just three or four minutes a day. The secret of efficient cleaning, like all cleaning, is keeping after it.

Your Job’s Done Right The First Time!

www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Seaway News - Thursday, January 22, 2015 - 29

(NC)—The condominium lifestyle can offer all the conveniences of a larger home without the yard work. True, your neighbours may be a bit close and you may not have as much square footage as in a detached house, but you are most likely within walking distance of many activities, from the mundane to the exciting. The following are some tips for making your space elegant and livable from Sally Morse, director of creative services for window fashions manufacturer Hunter Douglas: 1. Clear Out Clutter Most of us will admit to having more stuff than we need. A really rigorous editing of possessions collected over time will make your home appear more spacious. Contemporary window treatments that provide an expansive view of the outside also work wonders in creating an open, airy feeling. 2. Create Space Create the illusion of increased space by letting colours flow from one room to the other and using mirrors to enlarge spaces.

NEWS

Firsts are famous, but…

Everyone knows all about the famous firsts, such as the first to come to America, the first to fly the Atlantic and the first to manufacture automobiles. However, if Columbus, Lindbergh and Ford are the names that come to mind, you won’t get any marks for historical accuracy. Leaving the correction related to those firsts aside, I prefer to briefly explore some concepts and trivia related to ‘seconds’. Starting with an observation, I find it intriguing that we call the third hand of an analog clock the second hand. Today’s digitalsaturated generation would have no idea what is meant by the terms ‘second’ and ‘hand’ when examining a clock or a wrist watch. Second place in the Olympics ‘just’ gets silver. I could never even qualify for any preliminary to most competitions. A tip of the Tilley to those who win silver, but also to those who win bronze, and all those who even earned a place on the competitors’ bus. 99.9% of people have absolutely no idea of the difference between an American military aircraft bearing a ‘Y’ prefix and one with an ‘X’. Using the XF-86 and YF-86 for example, the X-one was the prototype, first of the type, flown for the first time by the manufacturer. When they were satisfied with it, the second of the series, the YF-86 was test flown by the m i l i t a r y. Wh e n e n o u g h g l i tc h e s

and deficiencies had been ironed out, the production aircraft were put into service as the F-86, with the name ‘Sabre’ following the designation, without an X or Y prefix. Playing ‘second fiddle’ to one’s prettier or smarter sibling is tough; taking second place to a spouse’s passion for golf, baseball, fishing or bingo could result in divorce at the very least. In “Second Hand Rose”, a song popularized by Barbara Streisand, everything was second hand. Her father operated a second hand business, offering items ranging from

toothpicks to a baby-grand. Everything in her Second Avenue apartment came from her father’s store, even her clothes, her hats, her pearls, even the piano in the parlor. Even Jake the plumber, the man she adored, had the nerve to tell her he’d been married before. However, if Rose were wise, she’d buy a low-mileage second-hand car. New cars lose two grand as soon as the salesman grasps your hand and says “Deal!” Price-conscious shoppers have no qualms about patronizing ‘factory seconds’ outlets. Of course, if you’re looking for a heart

pacemaker, components for manned flights or operating room equipment, stay away from such places. If you ever purchase a digital single lens reflex camera it almost invariably comes with an 18-80 mm kit lens. The second lens you might purchase would be a telephoto one, 150 mm or above. And now, back to the beginning. If Columbus, Lindbergh and Ford weren’t the firsts, who were? Take a second or so to find out. Seconds are quite often more interesting than firsts.

WIFE

A man received the following text from his neighbour: “I am so sorry Bob. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. Day and night when you’re not around, I have been helping myself to your wife, In fact, I have probably been getting more than you. I do not get it at home - but that’s no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won’t ever happen again.” On reading the text, the man, anguished and betrayed, went directly into his bedroom, grabbed his gun and, without a word, shot his wife dead. A few moments later, a second text came in, “Bloody spell check...!! ...the last word of first paragraph should read, ‘wifi’ .... Sorry about that, Bob”
