Team Cornwall hands out awards, bursaries to high achievers Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – A group of Cornwall area high school graduates planning different career paths received a cash injection to help with their post-secondary education studies. The volunteer organization geared towards promoting the city handed out bursaries at two separate ceremonies on Friday (June 26) to teens who have exhibited strong leadership skills and community values. “These students are about to begin an exciting next stage in their lives,” said Team Cornwall chair Peter Gault. “Team Cornwall feels it is important to recognize exceptional young leaders and we hope that as they continue in their education they will help us in promoting Cornwall as a great community.” The first gathering at Kawartha Credit Union recognized the winners of the Team Cornwall Youth Volunteer Award: Philippe
Lalonde (La Citadelle), Kisa Lanctot (St. Joseph’s), and Kiran Hashmi (CCVS). They each received a $1,500 bursary. At Pommier Square, the second ceremony honoured graduating students who have exhibited a positive attitude towards their peers, school and community. Bursaries of $400 were awarded to Carly McPhail (R.O.), Hali Flaro King (St. Matthew) Ainsley Hunt (CCVS), Philippe St-Arnaud (L’Heritage), Madison McLeod (Holy Trinity), Ally Lecky (Char Lan), Emilie Contant (La Citadelle), and Kebbie Brown (R.O.) “Positive attitude combined with education can open doors wherever life takes you,” said team member Andre Pommier, who created the bursary program several years ago. “Cornwall has given you the opportunity to succeed, and we hope that you will return and help grow our city.” For more information, visit teamcornwall. com.

17,000 VEHICLES PER DAY: Reconstruction of Marleau begins with busy intersection sector,” he said. “That’s where we want to go. We want to grow that industrial park.” It’s expected the first phase of the project will wrap up next year. The project involves reconstructing the roadway, including the Marleau Avenue/ McConnell Avenue intersection, a particularly busy area of the city. The new road will have expanded capacity and new features like four lanes of traffic, turning lanes, bike lanes in each direction, sidewalks on both sides
and a median within the high pedestrian traffic areas. Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MPP Grant Crack, representing the provincial government, agreed that area of Cornwall needs some traffic improvements. “I get jammed up on Ninth Street when I come to Cornwall,” he said. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said safety is a priority. “This project, which is the result of careful analysis and planning by city administration and Cornwall city
council, will help to address rapidly increasing traffic,” he said. “It will also help to make the entire area safer for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.” Stage two of the Marleau reconstruction, from Alice Street to Iroquois Drive, is expected to take place within the next three years at the earliest, while a stretch from Iroquois to Glenview Boulevard could take as long as 10 years to wrap up. The total cost of the project, including all three phases, is anticipated to be some $11 million.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Marleau Avenue is being completely rebuilt, starting with a stretch of Ninth Street from Marlborough Street to Alice Street that sees some 17,000 vehicles a day in some sections. MP Guy Lauzon announced Wednesday, July 8, at city hall the federal government will contribute $833,000 to the project, as will the provincial government and city hall. “This is important to the City of Cornwall. This is integral to the future, especially for that industrial

Frost tells TV Cogeco he won’t be resigning CORNWALL, ONTARIO – Coun. Brock Frost isn’t resigning, and has finally acknowledged police charges have been filed against him in Quebec. In an exclusive interview with TV Cogeco Wednesday night Frost conceded he sent an email weeks ago saying he would resign from council effective July 1, but then quickly shelved that idea. “I won’t lie. I did initially have a quick thought about resigning,” he told The Source on Cogeco. “That was very short lived. There was an email that was sent out. “No official resignation was ever given.”
Consequently, Frost said he won’t be resigning. “Anyone knows that if an elected official ever resigns, there would be an official press release from city hall. That was never done, because I never resigned,” he told Cogeco’s Todd Lalonde. “We live in a great country where you are innocent until proven guilty unless you’re a politician living in Cornwall.” Frost also waded into the Quebec police charges of fraud and forgery, finally admitting they are real and he is defending them. He even appeared to suggest he had pleaded guilty, though he likely misspoke. Frost confirmed to Seaway News he “plead not guilty” to the charges.
“The charges, they are real. I’m defending them vigorously,” he said on television. “I’m very excited for the truth to eventually get out.” Frost told Lalonde he went on television to address the many issues following him because he felt local media had misquoted his previous comments on the matter. Specifically, he suggested reports that he is now living in Ottawa as a real estate agent are false. He said he lives part-time in Ottawa and continues to own income properties in Cornwall. He emailed local media weeks ago and suggested: “I live in Ottawa and don’t pay much attention to what is said in Cornwall.”

Agape Centre gets a boost The cash injection is from the Best Western for a Better World initiative. According to its website, the Better World Fund helps hotels across Canada with charitable initiatives by allocating resources to the programs with the most critical need. Paul Lefebvre, Best Western general manager, secured the funding after applying online on behalf of the Agape, beating out thousands of other applications. Drouin’s consistent

CORNWALL, Ontario - After a five-year (plus) stretch as an Agape Centre board member, Anne Drouin is still helping to keep the food bank’s shelves stocked with healthy food choices. With her fellow colleagues from Best Western Plus Parkway Inn & Conference Centre in Cornwall by her side, Drouin handed over a $2,500 cheque to Alyssa Blais, the centre’s executive director, on Thursday, July 9.
advocacy for the centre made choosing the charity simple. “We thought it was a worthy cause and something that is really needed locally,” said Lefebvre. The donation will go towards the Agape’s food bank, which serves 25-30 families a day. “In the summer, donations go way down, but our services increase,” said Blais. “During these months, more children go the centre, and parents need more food since the school breakfast programs aren’t running.” Drouin noted that the Agape’s thrift store New For You is a major fundraiser for the non-profit. “It’s a combination how the Agape Centre benefits the community. It’s somewhere for people to go have
lunch. And the store: it helps those who can’t afford to shop at other places and when people shop there they’re helping to pay for food and the building. There’s a huge misconception in the city that the building was donated, but it wasn’t,” said Drouin, past board member from 2007-2008 to 2013. Blais thanked Best Western for their generous contribution and encourages others to donate as well. “This is all going towards food. Donations can be designated to any of our services or the Within These Walls building campaign,” she said. With renovations ongoing, Agape continues to provide food and clothing to more than 1,000 people each month. The building campaign has reached 80 per cent of its goal, leaving $200,000 to be raised.

CORNWALL, Ontario - It takes a village, as they say, and the village has certainly come out in full force this year, partnering up for the annual community gardens at Hamilton Crescent and Lemay Street Housing. The focus, as it has been in the past years, is getting resources to families to work their gardens, and also to be on site throughout the summer,” said Corrie D’Alessio, community health worker, Seaway Valley Community Health Centre, which spearheads the project. “We’re building garden skills, particularly focusing on the kids, but also teaching families skills that
will be offering garden workshops for children, and the Early Years Centre, along with volunteers Kimberly Cameron, Mary Fairbairn, Francine Poisson, YuXuan Lin and Jenna Seguin, will be supporting the families with fun, garden-related activities, to reinforce the skills they have learned. “We work with schools to help them establish garden programs and help them build connections to their curriculum,” said Alain D’Aoust, regional coordinator for Growing up Organic, a program run by Canadian Organic Growers. “This year for the first time we are translating that into the community garden environment, working with multiple age groups. There’s murder on the menu at Upper Canada Village ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – Eddie May Mysteries will transform the peaceful and pastoral vibe at Upper Canada Village into an interactive crime scene on select Saturday evenings this July and August. After a short walk through the village, guests are invited to the Harvest Barn Restaurant for a three-course dinner, as a cast of suspicious characters provides entertainment. And of course, there’s a murder. Detective Eddie May arrives and with the help of the audience tries to solve the case. “In theatre, and in particular interactive theatre like we do, atmosphere is everything,” said Noel
Counsil, crime minister at Eddie May Mysteries. The Ottawa theatre group will perform ‘Gunset Boulevard,’ starring Norman Desmond and Samantha Sheppard. Desmond and his entourage will also be performing his latest docudrama ‘The Silence of the Hams.’ “Our staff and actors have been trained to perform in a variety of settings, from private homes to trains, but never have we had an opportunity like this one,” said Counsil. “To be able to move our plot through a setting like Upper Canada Village will make for a very rich experience for the customer.” The show will feature song, dance and special effects along with audience interaction and improv comedy. Audience members are
encouraged to be as interactive as they choose. Everyone has a chance to solve the mystery with a chance to win a prize (and bragging rights). The Morrisburg venue ran a test program in 2014, and after a series of rave reviews and soldout shows, the murder mystery dinners are back. “Last year was a great success and we look forward to working with this professional team again this summer,” said Geoff Waycik, manager at UCV. “By partnering with established high quality entertainment professionals, we hope to maximize the unique setting of the village during its ‘after hours’ period through the high tourism season as well.” The Saturday evening shows start at UCV’s
Discovery Centre at 6:30 p.m. and last approximately two hours. Dates: July 11, 25 and August 8, 22. There is a limited capacity of 75 guests and reservations are required. Tickets are $69 (plus HST) per person and include a complimentary pass to UCV that can be used for a future visit during the 2015 regular season. The event is recommended for ages 13 years and older. Rain or shine, the show goes on since the entire program takes place in accessible areas. Dining is by a set menu with a chicken or vegetarian option. Summer Beer Fest, the toast of Cornwall
Cornwall’s Summer Beer Fest 2015 attendees toast the inaugural event’s success by raising a glass at Nav Centre’s Jet Set Pub patio on Saturday, July 11, 2015. From left, Kayla Champagne, Kaitlyn Legue, Sara Smith, Lee Theodore, Holly Smith, and Ashley Costain. Adam Brazeau CORNWALL, Ontario - Close to 1,200 beer aficionados poured into the Jet Set patio at the Nav Centre for the first round of Cornwall’s Summer Beer Fest to sip suds and feast gourmet fare. Event co-organizer Sebastien ‘Mani’ Manigat said the inaugural edition’s turnout exceeded expectations.
“At first when we started, we were sceptic, but as it started to materialize in June we started getting excited,” said Manigat. “This is a social event, it’s about culture. People from all slices coming together. It’s not just about beer. We have Cornwall restaurants pushing the envelope with food here, too.” Breweries on-site included Big Rig, Cassel
Brewery, Beau’s, Barley Days, Bicycle Craft, Lake of Bays, and La Tuque de Broue. Festivalgoers also sampled tasty offerings from several Cornwall restaurants and eating establishments: Bar Q, Truffles & Table 21, Schnitzels, and Love Love Food. Three months ago, Manigat approached event co-organizer Ian Bentley, food &
beverage director at Nav Centre, to do another beer garden (similar to the one he hosted at the venue during Summer Food Fest 2014). “My response was: no. I wanted to do a festival,” said Bentley. “We wanted to work together to make sure this was a succcess for Cornwall, not just us. And I think it happened.”

Nine years and counting for Ingleside firefighter challenge CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s nine years and counting for an Ingleside event that become more popular every summer. The 9th Annual Ingleside Firefighter Challenge is just a few days away and this year’s event will offer a full day of activities. Inflatables, pony rides, face painting, a reptiles show and a children’s firefighter challenge, as well as a barbecue and a beer garden have been slated to take place July 18 in front of the Ingleside Shopping Plaza. Invitations have been sent to all neighbouring fire departments in SD&G and surrounding area inviting personnel to go head-to-head in a test of skill, endurance and teamwork as they make their way through a skills course. The challenge is meant to simulate the first couple of minutes of a fire
and will include such demonstrations as forcible entry, hose pulls, victim drag, ladder climbing and more. “We were thrilled with the community support the past couple of years and every year we seem to grow bigger,” said event spokesperson Stacy Charlebois. “The Ingleside Firefighters’ Association plan this event as a way to give back to our supportive community, and along with numerous local sponsors, make this event better every year.” Ingleside will be rocking with live entertainment from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. featuring Kilts, Riffs and Spurs and SwitchGear. This event is free to the public and any proceeds raised will benefit the Ingleside Firefighter’s Association.
Morewood firefighter Ben Baynham competes at last year’s Ingleside Firefighter Challenge.
WET AND WILD: Waterfest takes it up a notch this year

CORNWALL, Ontario - Kinsmen Cornwall Waterfest will be making a big splash at the historic Cornwall Canal Aug. 8. The popular free event will offer something for the entire family with the popular dragon boat races, a new dragon boat tug of war, the Waterfest main stage featuring local performers, ArtFest including local artisans, and attractions for children. Waterfest is also offering a free pancake breakfast to all participants and attendants as well as a corn roast and barbecue. Dragon boat teams are still being sought to join the races All teams have a race complement of 20 paddlers plus one drummer. Veterans and rookies are welcome to sign up. “This will be Desjardins Dragons fourth year participating in the races,” said Caisse Populaire team

captain Shawn Filion. A flower ceremony, which includes a boat with a member from each of the teams paddling to the middle of the canal and tossing a carnation into the water in honor of a survivor or in memory of a loved one, kicks off the event. “The flower ceremony that occurs prior to the final race of the day is a very heartwarming aspect of the festival,” said event co-ordinator Rebecca Runions. Waterfest also focuses awareness on heart ailments. “The nature of Waterfest blends wonderfully into what the Heart and Stroke Foundation is all about,” said Cindy Rowe, area manager. “Physical activity can be a lifesaver – literally. When you’re physically active, you can dramatically lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.”

Bagpipes, kilts and caber-tossing headed to Maxville CORNWALL, Ontario – The 68th Glengarry Highland Games are only a stone’s throw away. The Games committees have been working hard and are excitedly putting the finishing touches to one of North America’s largest and best Scottish celebrations, which opens on Friday, July 31. Fifty-seven pipe bands are expected for this year’s North American Pipe Band Championships, representing eight provinces and eight states, including Texas, Florida, Prince Edward Island and Alberta. Other highlights include over 200 highland dancers performing both Friday and Saturday and a full slate of heavyweights (amateur, women’s, professionals) competing in tests of strength and endurance. The kids’ entertainment lineup features a Scottish puppet show, petting zoo, storytellers, and photos with Nessie, The Dragon. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to sweep through the small village for the two-day event. Friday night tattoo and concert: The evening starts with the massed fiddlers, 100 strong, warming
up the audience. Next skydivers float down from above bearing the flags of Scotland, Canada and the United States, while the respective national anthem echoes through the packed grandstand. The MacCulloch Dancers, celebrating 60 years of dancing, will also thrill the audience with Glengarry favourites, The Brigadoons. “This world-class show presented under the open sky is one of most unforgettable experiences associated with the Games,” said Cruickshank. Lighting up the stage: This year’s headlining acts take a different twist with not one, but three performers – Maritime guitarist, singer and songwriter J.P. Cormier, National Capital’s electric Celtic group Écosse, and the energetic Change of Step dancers. Bringing high energy to the tattoo: Écosse is a combination of six of the National Capital Region’s favourite musicians. Scotland’s native son, Wakefield’s Bobby Watt, a singer since his teens was described by Warren Robinson, a past president of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, as “The best male voice in traditional music, anywhere.” James Stephens who
plays a dozen or so instruments adds his wonderful voice to the vocal arrangements. Duncan Gillis cut his musical teeth amongst the pipe band community and in countless sessions with various Celtic groups over the years. Duncan’s own invention, the Highland hornpipe, is an integral part of Écosse’s sound. Greg Brown, with the infectious sound of his button accordion and fiddle, will link hearts to the Auld Sod for sure. Another talented lad, no stranger to Glengarry audiences, is multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Paddy Maher who also adds his tasteful musicianship to the group. This motley crew is held

together and indeed driven by the wonderful drumming and percussive talents of Rob Graves. Change of Step takes tradition in new direction: This dynamic group of dancers from Nova Scotia and Ontario performs original choreography rooted in Scottish tradition, yet shaped by modern influences. Change of Step dancers include the current Adult World Champion and past Canadian Champions. Accompanying the troupe will be Cape Breton Fiddling sensation Wendy MacIssac. Admission to the tattoo is included in the gate admission ($20 per day and children under 12 free).

CORNWALL, Ontario – Motorists with a soft spot for animals, a messy ride and traveling on Brookdale Avenue were in luck on July 4. The PAWfect Car Wash at Pro Oil Change in Cornwall raised $1,140 for the StormontDundas-Glengarry branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The proceeds help with emergency vet cases, and supply the animal shelter with some added funds to purchase wish list items. The SD&G SPCA operates on fundraising initiatives, fees, and donations alone - it receives no government funding whatsoever. Event organizer Christina Russell said small fundraisers, such as the car wash, give the animal shelter an opportunity to engage with new individuals and further educate the community on the importance of animal welfare and the role the shelter play. In July 2011, the SD&G SPCA hosted its first car wash in Alexandria, which raised $500. “We value the support of our SD&G community and strive to make each of our fundraising events successful and unique in order to engage everyone we can,” said Russell. ‘No Hot Pets’ key-chains were also up for grabs. The campaign, created by the Ontario SPCA, aims to remind pet owners of the dangers of leaving pets unattended in a vehicle during the hot summer months. To volunteer or make a donation to the SD&G SPCA, visit www.sdg.ontariospca.ca.

OPINION
It’s time to stop betting on a casino, and other old ideas Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
By the time you read this, I will be in the midst of my annual summer vacation, which includes plenty of bologna sandwiches and daytime TV. But one of the larger news items to fly across my desk just before stepping (running) out of the office Friday involved a Cornwall casino. Again. Councillors waded into the debate – again – concerning the feasibility of seeing a gaming house established here in Fun City. Councilllors, past and present, have been down this yellow brick road before, hoping against hope that a casino could be built on the shores of the St. Lawrence River and finally put an end to many of the economic woes our fair city is grappling with. A casino, it is thought, will add jobs to our region, draw in thousands of tourists each year and create a money-making Mecca on the waterfront that will return Cornwall to previous grandeur. But the reality is a casino was a pipe dream headed into Monday night, so let’s start coming up with ideas that can actually see the light of day. The latest iteration of the great casino quest came courtesy councillors Brock Frost and Mark MacDonald. Frost, no doubt seeing all the traffic running
into the Rideau Carleton Raceway thanks to his new home in the nation’s capital as an Ottawa real estate broker, wants to see some of that economic success created here. Council, rightfully so, turned down the idea Monday night. The issuse is the province isn’t exactly giving out casino licenses every day. Last year the previous city council found out that Cornwall is nowhere close to securing a casino because new locations for gaming houses in Ontario are not being created. In 2014 the Ontario auditor general released a report concerning the Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) Corporation’s modernization plan. Buried in the report is a specific mention that a Cornwall casino, planned by OLG for winter of this year, is no longer a viable option. “While Cornwall was initially considered as a potential site for a new gaming facility, OLG received government approval for 29 Gaming Zones across the province,” said OLG spokesperson Tony Bitonti last year. “Included in that initial group of 29 zones were the 24 current OLG slots, casinos and resort casinos, as well as the potential for up to five new gaming sites in North Bay, Kenora, Wasaga Beach or Collingwood, Belleville or Quinte West, and the GTA. “At this time, there are no plans to expand the number of gaming zones across the province.” Seems pretty open-and-shut to me.
But instead Frost and MacDonald were looking to see administration come back with a report – again – on what it would take to get a casino in Cornwall. I think I have the answer: an act of God. And given that He is not a big fan of gambling, you can bet (pardon the pun) a casino is not likely to see the neon light of day anytime soon. But there is a bigger issue at play that kind of concerns me…is this the best idea we have from the new city council, a recycled scheme that has already been shot down? C’mon guys. I have no doubt that a casino would be a great addition to the local economy…but we’ve already been told, politely…’No.’ So let’s close the casino file, for a little while at least, and concentrate on coming up with
ideas that can actually be put into practice that will see our community grow. I have a few: explore more partnerships with surrounding communities so we can develop a regional approach to marketing ourselves, for everything from tourism (which needs to be maintained) to services like garbage collection and the delivery of water utilities (that last one has actually begun). What about development charges, a solid strategic plan that maps out the future of our city for the next 10-plus years, or some concrete ideas on how we can get better efficiencies out of an already-strapped tax dollar? Some have been discussed, others are still waiting to see the light of day. Let’s not waste any more time on a casino or other recycled ideas from the past.
of Canada. Hundreds of people, on transplant waiting lists, are dying simply because there are not enough donations. In Canada, most transplants can be performed with organs that come from live donors. Some years back, people on the waiting list in many cases got donations from family members or close friends or even colleagues. This is gradually changing. Many are now willing to donate their body parts to people they have never heard of or known.
The Canadian Society of Transplantation continues to update and come up with new guideless for donations. Social media has been a big help in recent years in encouraging more and more people to sign their cards. Public solicitations certainly help the chances of someone finding a donor. Right now, around 5,000 Canadians are waiting for organ transplants. I hope you will give some thought of signing organ donation card.
Opinion Column - Sultan Jessa I have always been a huge supporter of organ donations. And, yes both myself and my wife, signed donor donations cards many years ago. Organ donations in Ontario have reached a record high. According to the Trillium Gift of Life Network, a record number of residents have registered to be organ donors. This is most encouraging. About 27 per cent of the eligible population, or 3.2-million people, have registered to donate. That’s up from 25 per cent and up from 16 per
cent in 2008 when the Gift of Network started tracking affirmative registration rates. Over the last year, 271 deceased donors saves the lives of 960 people while 278 living donors helped 213 kidney recipients and 65 liver recipients. In Canada about 10 years, organs were taken only from people declared brain dead. But the situation has changed for the better because of more information available to Canadians and media campaigns. There is a big shortage of organs in every part

the folks they served. And, they actually had their phone numbers listed. It was grassroots community policing that started at the top. Our neighbour was Deputy Fire Chief J.A. Wilson. He would walk to and from work, including the lunch hour. ... The old court house up a long flight of stairs above the crowded, antiquated police station that was right out of a Humphrey Bogart movie. Magistrate P.C. Bergeron presided over the court. The court staff consisted of a secretary and clerk. Next door was the century-old fire station with the sleeping quarters upstairs. There was no air conditioning in the summer; an oil burner with just about zero efficiency tried to heat the spacious sleeping quarters in the winter. Firefighters made a dash to the trucks by sliding down a brass pole. Fire trucks that had open cabs. When two firefighters would stand on the back of the truck while hanging on to rails while responding to a call. When they fought fires in cumbersome raincoats. TRIVIA This franchise on Pitt Street between Sixth and Seventh served “beer” in mugs. TRIVIA ANSWER In 1958 Bob Turner was hired as the city’s first full-time recreation director. Before coming to Cornwall, Turner worked as the recreation director in Colborne, Ont. where he became the first black municipal recreation director in Ontario, and some think in North America. He died at age 35 in 1962. The then new arena was named in his honour - the Bob Turner Memorial Centre. THIS AND THAT Police tell us to lock our car doors to prevent theft from the vehicle, usually parked in a driveway overnight. The trouble with that is the crooks, usually young people looking for drug money and who seldom get caught, often

break in, causing damage. Seems better to give them free access, let them sniff around inside and move on to the neighbours. It could save you a few hundred dollars in damage. Just don’t keep anything of value in the vehicle. ... When they shot and killed escaped murderer Richard Matt, authorities said he was reaching for a shotgun. Two weeks later a fresh version was issued: He pointed his firearm at law enforcement officers. Does anybody care why he was shot? ... The Malone state trooper on routine patrol who shot and wounded the second escaped murderer has been played up as a hero. If he was a police officer just a few miles north in Ontario he would have had to immediately surrender his sidearm, fill out a detailed report for drawing his sidearm, and go on indefinite suspension while a civilian body investigated to determine if he should be charged with anything from murder to careless use of a firearm. HERE AND THERE It is against the law to litter, no? City bylaw says so. But has anybody ever been charged with littering? ... Nothing like a pending election to get the vote-buying funding machine out of the garage and running in third gear. There will be plenty of federal funding announcements in the next few weeks. ... Brockville General Hospital has announced the elimination of 25 full-time positions as it, like every hospital in the province, struggles to do more with less. The hit list includes 8.3 RNs, 7.7 PRNs, 6.4 PSWs and 3.2 support service employees. The announcement came with the usual claim that patient care will not be affected. Who are they trying to fool? What were those people doing all day, sitting around knitting?

When I was a kid, back in the other century when we had party telephone lines, watched the Honeymooners on a black and white 20-inch TV and played cowboys and Indians in a vacant field, the local newspaper would dispatch a reporter to interview somebody who had turned 90. It was a demographic milestone that made the front page, complete with photo. It’s still is a sought-after milestone, especially for somebody who is 89, worthy of celebration, but it is no longer news, front page or back page. Just about everybody knows of somebody who has lived to be 90, or longer. When the first wave of Canadian Baby Boomers was in maternity ward bassinets the anticipated life expectancy for males was 65 and 67 for females, a big improvement from their parents’ pre-WW 2 days when it was around 55. Today, the life expectancy is around 79.8 for males and 85 for females, and edging up. This is, of course, good news for the life insurance companies. Not so good news for pension plans and health-care budgets. Folks these days, at least the lucky ones, can collect a pension cheque for 30 years, sometimes for longer than they worked. The recent edition of the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge in-house magazine - The Lodger - highlights the increasing number of folks who have reached 90 and qualify as nonagenarians. It notes that almost one-third of its 130 residents - 42 - are 90-plus. Two have passed the 100year mark and counting. Two others are knocking on the door of the century mark. Eleven are 95 and older.
Studies show that women continue to live longer than men. This is reflected in the Lodge 90-plus club: Only eight of the 42 are men. This living longer thing has raised the question of when does old age begin. Some say that 70 is the new 50. Comic Bob Hope offered this answer: “You know you are getting old when you get one candle on the cake. It is like, see if you can blow this out.” AROUND AND ABOUT Belleville has a new deputy police chief who, get this, believes in foot patrols to enhance the visibility of a police department. In fact, Ron Gignac believes it doesn’t hurt for the brass to get out and walk around. Gignac was police chief in Deep River and before that an Ontario Provincial Police detachment commander in Port Credit, Niagara Falls, Caledon, Queen’s Park and Upper Ottawa Valley. ... Last week the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) took a hit as oil plunged to a three-month low. Meanwhile, at the pumps it was business as usual for the big oil companies. Business as usual meaning hosing us by dropping the price by a penny. ... One morning’s worth of bizarre headlines from a New York City newspaper: “Dad throws baby off bridge amid custody battle”. ... “Boy, 12, wanted for murder in gangland shooting during drug deal”. ... “Parents force teen to live in woods for eating Pop-Tarts when told not to.”. ... “Dad holding toddler shot dead in street”. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR When the police chief of the day lived in a modest abode among the regular folks and sometimes even walked to work. Allan Clarke resided in a little bungalow on Adolphus Street near Sixth. Earl Landry lived on Amelia Street between Fourth and Fifth. They were just a knock on the door away from

Another chapter in the story of Cornwall’s famous pizza CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall is famous for its pizza, and a new restaurant is looking to add to the legend. Esca Gourmet Pizza + Bar is now open on Pitt Street, and local residents are anxious to see what the new eatery has to offer. “The word pizza is in our name, so we knew we had to get it right,” says co-owner Mike Baird. “While we’re offering a variety of other entrees and starters, which we’re really proud of, our pizza is the star of the show!” Esca will offer a full line up of drink choices to help their patrons wash down that pizza. The owners want to introduce alternative tastes that may be new to some people. “As beer enthusiasts, we’ve taken great care in selecting our offerings - especially our line-up of Ontario craft beer,” says R.J. Payette. “We’ve also got a great selection of wine and whiskey and a cocktail menu which we’re excited about.” The new restaurant features a strikingly attractive modern interior that can accommodate 104 guests, while an outdoor patio can welcome another 48. Baird and his brother-in-law R.J. Payette engaged Bourgon Construction to undertake renovations to the two-storey building which formerly housed an LCBO store. The cost of the
renovations were offset in part by funding from the City of Cornwall’s Heart of the City Community Improvement Program. After several months of planning and renovations, the owners are anxious to open the doors to the public. “We want to offer the type of food, atmosphere, and customer service that add up to an exceptional dining experience,” says Baird. “We’re so proud of our menu, and we’ve hired amazing kitchen and wait staff to prepare and present it to our guests.” Esca plans to feature local foods from throughout Cornwall & the Counties. “Some of our local suppliers will be Smart Greens, Cardinal & Son, The Avonmore Berry Farm, The Glengarry Fine Cheese Factory, and Beau’s All Natural,” says Baird. “We’re also hoping to soon carry craft beer from Cornwall’s own Rurban115 Brewing. ” Mike Baird and R.J. Three local girls party with Grammy-winning artist in Montreal CORNWALL, Ontario - A trio of local girls got the thrill of a lifetime this week – they partied with Taylor Swift. Cosette and Zoe Manson of Cornwall and their friend Mireille Girard were three of 18 people (out of the 18,000 at the concert) who were chosen to party with the world-renowned pop star back stage. The girls had to dressed up like they were headed for a party with Swift (which is likely a prerequisite for a Swift concert, anyway) and then hope that concert organizers would spot them out of a crowd of several thousand people. It’s called ‘Loft 89’ and it’s the dream of every Taylor Swift fan to get invited to such an exclusive event. “We were screaming so loud. Everyone was super happy for us,” said Girard, 17. “We couldn’t even talk. We were speechless.” Girard said Swift autographed a picture she had made of the artist. “We talked about that,” she said. “She was so nice.” It has been reported that Swift’s mom Andrea
carefully watches the crowd to see which fans are the most hyped during the show. For their efforts at the Montreal concert Tuesday the girls got to meet the Grammywinning artist, and went home with a pic and an autograph.

GOLF

If you haven’t been in a sunny climate all winter, the time to prepare for your golf season is right now. But before you head out to your first tee-off, think about adopting a good training program that will help you avoid injury. It cannot be repeated often enough: good physical fitness plays an important role in even this slow-moving sport. Regular exercise helps with flexibility, cardio health, and the smoothness of your swing. It will also help you prevent injury to the back, shoulders, and hips. Even simple stretches will help to improve your flexibility and balance. Don’t hesitate to seek the advice of a professional who will know how to adapt the appropriate exercises for your physical capabilities and requirements. Once golf courses open for the season, it is important to plan several sessions on the practice range in order to work your muscles

and regain your rhythm with the iron in your hands. It’s not recommended to make your maiden outing of the season be a full round. Devote your first baskets of balls to your short game, using your 8 and 9 irons as well as your pitching wedge. Apart from sparing your body, you will master shots of less than 100 metres more quickly. This aspect of the game often makes the most difference on a score card. You can then gradually continue your preparations with longer irons, finishing off with your woods. Always take about ten minutes to do some stretching exercises before each round of golf. And it is wise to plan to spend some time on the practice green in order to improve your concentration. Regular visits to the practice range are always a good idea in order to correct errors or to re-establish your routine. A few lessons with a pro can also be of real benefit. Have a great golf season!

GOLF
Increase clubhead speed and power with wrist lag If you want to improve your golf swing cluhbead speed, wrist lag is likely what you will some hard work into. It is difficult to change a way of playing, especially if you have been doing it incorrectly for a long time. And you will need to break a few habits in order to do it. We all know how hard it can be to break a habit, especially if it is a long term one. It is something that you are going to have to be prepared to work at. You will need to be determined to change and have a real desire to do it, or else it is possible that you will just give up and stop before you have really achieved anything. Try deciding on when you want to improve by and writing it down. It has been shown that if you write down the goals that you want to achieve then you are far more likely to be successful at them. It may seem like a lot of effort for a game, but if you really want to improve, then it is well worth doing. You should also start to think about what technique you are likely to try to improve. Perhaps write a list and then tick them off as you
try them and also note down whether you thought they worked or not. If you look at your goal each day, then you are much more likely to stick to it and improve the way that you play, especially your golf swing lag. You will also find some benefits from looking on line and seeing if there are any instructions on there with regards to improving. You will probably find that there is all sorts of advice and it may not all be the same. Think about what you think might work for you and use your common sense to jusge whether you think it is good or bad advice. Also choose something which suits you, applying a new grip each time you play could be the best thing for you or your may find that doing lots of exercises in your free time will be better. You could always try a few different things and then continue just with the one that seems to be working the best or is the easiest for you to do. Remember, that if the most effective is the most time consuming and takes the most effort
and you think that it is unlikely that you will be able to keep up with it, then it is probably a waste of time trying it. You know what is realistic for you and although it is good to stretch yourself, if you really want to improve then you need something that you know that you will be able
to commit to. If you know that it will be worth the effort in the end, because you will improve your golf swing lag then perhaps try something more challenging as you are more likely to be focused and successful.

Many thanks for your prayers, beautiful flowers, sympathy and mass cards, food and generous donations to the Hospice. To Father Dan van Delst, we were so grateful for your comforting words that truly honoured Harry’s memory and to Father Bernie Cameron for assisting in officiating at the celebration of Harry’s life. We are thankful for the beautiful music and song provided during the funeral service. Thank you to the caring and compassionate Hospice Cornwall staff and to Wilson Funeral Home for the respect and professionalism shown to our family. Info: Bev Runions (bgrunions@bell.net) 613-931-3110- Fair weekend only 613-347-2841 Pet Tip of the Week: Horses require access to hay or pasture throughout the day for grazing and nibbling and supplementary grain feedings twice a day. Typically, a horse will consume about 9 kilograms of food and at least 30 litres of water on a daily basis. It’s also very important they have access to shade during warm and sunny weather. Please make sure that all your pets have access to fresh water every day and are in shaded areas, especially when temperatures are hot and humid. Extreme temperatures can cause serious illness and even death in dogs and cats. Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle on a sunny summer’s day. Temperatures can rise rapidly inside your car even when the outside temperature is moderate. Try to exercise your dog during the early morning when temperatures tend to be cooler and never leave your dog or cat outside all day long without access to proper shelter and plenty of fresh clean water to drink.

Priceless Dinner Party My wife hosted a dinner party for all our friends, some we hadn’t seen for quite a while and everyone was encouraged to bring their children as well. All during dinner my wife’s best friend’s four-year-old, sitting across from me, stared at me. The girl could hardly eat her food for staring. I checked my shirt for spots, felt my face for food, patted my hair in place but nothing stopped her from staring at me. I tried my best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for me. I finally asked her “Why are you staring at me?” Everyone at the table had noticed her behaviour and the table went quiet for her response. The little girl said “I’m just waiting to see how you drink like a fish.”

Thank you to Chantal Bergevin, sales girl at Leons who went the extra mile to make sure I had my regrigerator that night. Special thanks to her brother Pete and friend Paul for all the extra work they did to move and set it up for me. It’s nice to know that there are still good people out there. Thanks again, Phyllis.

Please report any suspected animal cruelty or abuse by calling the OSPCA at 1-888-6687722, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, your local animal shelter at 613-936-0072 or the local Police Dept. Unlike most crime victims, animals can’t seek help for themselves. They depend on you to stop their suffering and if you don’t call, who will?
Feeling the heat? For your health, consume at least six glasses of water a day. It’s the best way to quench your thirst. Ways to help Wildlife ~ Avoid cleaning products containing phosphates. Some dishwasher detergents are harmful for the environment, especially when they contain a group of chemicals known as phosphates. Phosphates are often added to detergents because they can help with the cleaning process. But when high amounts of phosphates are concentrated in our lakes and rivers, they allow for the overgrowth of algae. Excessive algae growth can be toxic for both animals and humans. When shopping, look for brands that are phosphate-free.
SEAWAY NEWS Please don’t drink and drive. Statistics show, more impaired driving accidents occur during the summer than winter.
