corner of Second and Adolphus streets at 4:09 a.m. on Saturday (July 18). Platoon Chief Platoon Robert Cotnam said every unit was occupied when an upstairs apartment caught fire. “While they fought the flames, one tenant needed to be woken up,” said Cotnam. “The whole building has smoke damage, it spread to the roof and the attic. That’s where we had problems. It’s an older building. There were renovations done, walls built on walls. The fire caught between them.” On Sunday, yellow caution tape lined the unoccupied building. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Frost launches anti-defamation group, posts bizarre video CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall Coun. Brock Frost has released a video announcing the creation of a non-profit organization aimed at tightening laws related to libel, slander, defamation, verbal abuse and online bullying. In the two-minute-and-one second YouTube clip posted on Tuesday (July 14), Frost launched the Canadian Organization

Against Libel and Slander (C.O.A.L.S.). Watch the video here (https://youtu.be/ uXrvi3FKspM). “The entire purpose of the organization I have founded is to protect victims of unnecessary and cruel defamation and to punish those guilty of such offences,” Frost said. The rookie councillor bizarrely spends the first 42 seconds listing accusations leveled against him over the past two years, including British spy, loan shark, illegitimate father and even murder for hire.

“I understand that being a public figure comes with public criticism, but the level of lies and gossip I’ve experienced is something of a different magnitude,” he said. “I’m pretty thick-skinned and the majority of comments don’t really affect me. I find it rather sad and pathetic to be honest. But there are many individuals whose lives have been dramatically affected due to similar defamation and verbal abuse.” Frost encourages the public to contact him if they have also been victimized. But there is

no website link or e-mail for the organization provided with the video, which was posted on his YouTube page. As a city councillor, Frost’s contact information is available on the City of Cornwall website. “It’s time that the lawmakers in our country recognize that libel and slander legislation, as well as the Criminal Code of Canada for that matter, are outdated and unable to protect the citizens of Canada,” Frost said. “Everything needs to change now. If you have ever been a victim, please tell me your story.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – MP Guy Lauzon has graced the cover of countless Conservative mail-outs delivered in the Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry riding during his four-term stretch. But a new billboard ad with the incumbent candidate’s image portrays him in a not-soflattering light. SDSG federal Liberal candidate Bernadette Clement, joined by members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 522, unveiled the large sign on Ninth Street in Cornwall, Ont., on Wednesday, slamming Lauzon over Canada Post stamping out door-to-door delivery. The billboard says: “Conservative MP Guy Lauzon has not spoken out to save your doorto-door delivery. Does he deserve your support in the next election?” “We want to work with postal officials to continue to make postal service the best that

CUPW launched the national billboard campaign to spread awareness of the Conservative government’s plan to cut postal services. The union represents roughly 90 local workers. Clement noted that supporting CUPW is part of ‘Real Change’ - a plan introduced by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau on June 16 to “restore openness and transparency to government.” “Real Change begins with issues that affect us all at home, within our riding,” she said. “That is why I endorse the Liberal commitment to stopping the Harper government from doing away with door-to-door mail service in Canada, and I endorse the Liberal commitment to protecting rural mail delivery and service.” The federal election is scheduled for Monday, October 19.

Seaway Train Show chugs through Long Sault CORNWALL, Ontario – After bringing out the curious kid in young and old, alike, the annual model train event has left the station. The Seaway Lighthouse 3rd Rail Modular Club wrapped up its fourth edition of the Seaway Train Show at the Long Sault Arena on July 19 and 20. Organizer Marie Morrell said more than 2,700 people attended the event, which raised roughly $2,900 for the local non-profit organization Parade of Nations for the Developmentally Challenged. “This was our biggest show yet,” said Morrell. There were 17 exhibitors, 26 vendors from all over Ontario and Quebec, and nine volunteers. Alex Raycroft, 6, spent over four hours visiting a variety of displays showcasing railroad history and modern locomotives, as the model trains rolled by, over and over again. “He waits for this all year-round,” said Raymond Raycroft, Alex’s dad. Morrell says plans for the 2016 edition Seaway Train Show are well underway. She thanked the event’s sponsors, including TC Media - Cornwall Seaway News, for their in-kind support and gifts. But a special shout out went to the UPI Gas Bar on Brookdale Avenue for being the only sponsor

Cornwall’s Holly Nichols won the raffle for a Via Rail trip from Cornwall to Halifax, for two people including a sleeper, a value of $2,147. Safe zone created around tugboat wrecks CORNWALL, Ontario - A so-called ‘safe zone’ has been created around the wreck of a tugboat that still remains capsized in the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall. Officials with Nadro Marine said Monday the zone extends through the entire area surrounding the wreck, including mooring lines and a safety line running from a barge at the wreck to concrete bridge pillars and the shore. The zone is expected to be in place until mid-August, though a small channel has been opened along the south side of the river, off the shore of Cornwall Island, to allow traffic to pass. “For public safety, we are reminding everyone to remain outside of the boundaries to ensure we can efficiently move ahead with

salvage of the Lac Manitoba,” said Nadro Marine general manager Jamie Nadrofsky. Weeks ago the Lac Manitoba and LCM 131 capsized when trying to secure a barge in the swift-moving current. Crews on site continue to monitor river current, along with regular daily inspections for environmental and site safety. Salvage work on the tugs has been suspended while officiald try to determine how to safely complete the project. The tugs Seahound and Sharon M I are standing by in the area to assist in response operations if the status of the wreck changes. The Lac Manitoba is a 64 ft, twin screw, 1000 hp tug. The LCM 131 is a much smaller vessel.

Shifting the paradigm in mental health care family recovery, it is hoped that these procedural and policy enhancements will also provide benefits to the hospital, by lowering re-admission rates, improving client satisfaction and increasing the frequency of successful outcomes,” said Christine Penney, the hospital’s vice-president of community addictions and mental health. and welcomed visitors,” said SDSG MPP Jim McDonell. A concept plan was developed for the South Lancaster Wharf in 2011, which identified the need for a floating dock to provide public access for canoes and kayaks. The township applied to the OTF grant program with assistance and input from the Friends of the Lancaster Wharf group and was successful in obtaining the funds needed to purchase and install the floating dock in 2014. South Glengarry Councillor Trevor Bougie extended thanks on behalf of council to the Friends of the Lancaster Wharf volunteers, who played an integral role in the development of this project. CORNWALL, Ontario – The Township of South Glengarry officially unveiled a new floating dock at the South Lancaster Wharf, thanks to a $14,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Regarded as one of the few places along the St. Lawrence/Lake St. Francis Shores that provides public access to the waterfront, the wharf is well-used for swimming, fishing and community events. The addition of the floating dock will provide canoes and kayaks with access to the wharf and includes a ramp to increase accessibility. “In the shadow of our Glengarry Cairn, this newest amenity of South Glengarry enhances our pride and will be enjoyed by all residents

FUNERAL FRIDAY:

Earle’s friends say his loss is a void that can’t be filled Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Jamie Carr, in typical comedic fashion, pulls no punches in discussing his friend John Earle, who died unexpectedly on the weekend following a scuba dive. “The last conversation I had with John, I think I said ‘Where’s my money?’” Carr said with a laugh, pointing to some project or another where the duo had collaborated. “When (providing other media interviews) I said I’m going to say things that John would want me to say.” But beneath the smiles, old stories, and jokes, Carr indicates the pain of Earle’s passing remains quite real. Earle’s best friend Frank Burelle agrees. “He was as flawed as the rest of us. He was human like everybody else,” said Burelle. “(But) he just had the craziest ideas. He wasn’t conventional by any means.” Earle was a lot of things, but conventional was certainly not one of them. “Everybody is going to tell you a story about John making them feel good,” said Carr. “I can’t remember exactly what we were talking about…we were just driving to Ingleside or something. John was one of those friends where we could make each other laugh…we were telling a story and we had to pull over.” The three men and Ron Piquette worked on a variety of projects together, the most highprofile - arguably - being ‘10 Days Across Canada’ where they travelled across the coun-

try to find out what it is to be Canadian. “But he said let’s do it in 10 days. I said ‘Are you out of your mind?’” recalls Burelle. “But he was a master of organization. He organized so well.” And while from a layman’s perspective the film worked on a variety of levels, Carr suggests one of Earle’s greatest gifts was his ability to shrug off an unsuccessful project and try again. “He wasn’t afraid to fail. I mean look at that pilot…that didn’t work,” said Carr, referring to the TV project ‘Wingman’ that never really got off the ground. “And even the documentary (10 Days Across Canada), when you think about it, it was in like 20 theatres. That was it. “He took risks and he knew when he failed…but it didn’t stop him.” Earle’s projects include a laundry list of dreams and aspirations. He had a production company with Burelle called Fishrizzo Productions, operated an antique store called Earle’s Vintage, sang and performed in a number of bands, helped create a board game, ran for MPP in 2014 carrying the Liberal banner and had a family. Burelle said the two were buddies for nearly 40 years, finding each other on the playground in kindergarten at La Nativite in Cornwall. They grew apart slightly in high school when Earle went to St. Joseph’s for a time while Burelle continued his studies at La Citadelle. The two reconnected when Earle’s band Rapunzil’s Tower held an EP release party at

what was once Moviola’s in Cornwall. Burelle, an artist, found a novel way to sign a guest book at the party. “It was really nice to see him and I drew this picture of a fish and he was like ‘Wait, you’re artistic,’” said Burelle. “That’s when our bromance rekindled.” What followed was more concerts where Burelle would act as roadie, helping to connect sound equipment for shows in Lamoureux Park, produce documentary-style movies…and create a lifetime of memories. “My greatest adventures were with John,” said Burelle, adding life wasn’t always fun and roses. “I was there for the dark stuff. Like when he got sick. That was really tough,” said Burelle, pointing to Earle’s battle with tongue cancer. Surgery to remove the cancer resulted in his inability to continue performing live music, which effectively led to his pursuit of movie-making. “Of course he got tongue cancer - because it’s absolutely ridiculous,” said Burelle. “He never smoked, he’d never drink. The recovery was tough and that ended his singing career.” The same question keeps coming up in discussions with Earle’s friends, and that is what happens now? “What makes me sad is we didn’t just lose John,” said Burelle. “We’ve all lost out on what he was going to do next. What other insane projects or ideas did he have? We’ve lost that.

You don’t know how big his dreams were going to get.” The circumstances of Earle’s death have still not been determined. He was in the midst of a dive in Lake St. Lawrence west of Cornwall when he suddenly became distressed. He was pronounced dead in hospital after being recovered from the water. Police have turned the investigation over to the Ontario Coroner’s Office and a post mortem has been ordered. Earle leaves behind his wife Alyssa Blais, children Arianna and Ryland, step-daughter Kassy Blais, his mother Joan Levy-Earle and sister Lisa Earle. A trust fund for Earle’s children can be contributed to by email transfer to inmemoryofjohnearle@gmail.com, a cheque payable to Michele Allinotte, a Cornwall lawyer, in trust with “In memory of John Earle” on the memo line. Her law is located at 160 Pitt St. or visit any branch of the Bank of Montreal to deposit funds directly. The name on the account is Michele Allinotte in trust for Arianna Earle and Ryland Earle. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS: Friends will be received Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at John Sullivan Funeral Home 341 Pitt street, across from city hall. Funeral will be held on Friday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis De Sales Parish, 434 Second St West. For more see page 14.

SOUTH STORMONT NEWS

Firefighters turn up the heat in South Stormont CORNWALL, Ontario – It will be a few more years before Bennett McCourt can battle a burning blaze, but the four-year-old showed he can stand the heat at the annual Ingleside Firefighter Challenge. Donning a mini red fireman’s hat, the youngster ducked and dived through a children’s firefighter challenge on Saturday (July 18). Five times in a row. “He loves watching the firefighters compete,” said Lindsay Wells, Bennett’s mom. “We come every year. And it keeps growing bigger and getting better.” South Stormont’s four volunteer fire departments (Long Sault - Station #1; Ingleside - #2, Newington - # 3, and St Andrew - #4) battled it out with neighbouring firefighters across SDG and the surrounding area in a test of skill, endurance and teamwork. The challenge simulated the first couple of minutes of a fire, with demonstrations of forcible entry, hose pulls, victim dragging, and ladder climbing.

After narrowly beating Mountain firefighter Shawn Lavertue, Hawkesbury firefighter Patrick Mayer rewarded himself with several bottles of water. “Going through the obstacle course is tough. You can’t imagine the amount of muscles working to get through it,” said Mayer, 33. “This lets the crowd see what it’s like being a fireman. But the heat we’re facing here is nothing compared to when we fight a fire.” Jennifer MacIsaac, event committee member, said over 1,000 spectators flocked in front of the Ingleside Shopping Plaza for the challenge’s ninth year. In addition to battling firefighters, the competition featured inflatables, pony rides, face painting, a reptiles show and live entertainment, as well as a barbecue and a beer garden. The Women’s Charity Challenge component of the event raised $1,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. All other proceeds from the free event benefitted the Ingleside Firefighter’s Association.

something new in the last few months and after having included the community as well as my school, there are many people who can say much the same. This is the same group of people who look up to and depend on the work Alison does and I personally have her to thank for the outcome of my project as well as providing and maintaining such a unique, heart-warming organization. Of course, the immediate response and final outcome of my project would not have been possible without my school community, as well as the outside community. The Kindergarten to Grade 6 classes at RO participated in a coin drive that emphasized the power of children to children, while the outside community proved to not only help me on my quest to redefine the definition of Paying It Forward, but redefine the definition of community as well. A sincere thank you goes to a former recipient of the Pay It Forward Award, Calla Legue, for giving me the opportunity to share my interest in the MOM2MOMafrica program with everyone, and to those who shared the intent of my project and information about the organization itself. Thank you to our Rothwell Osnabruck principal, Mr. Macintosh, for kick-starting the fundraising as well. As the all-day scrapbooking event was the basis of the fundraising that took place, I’d like to recognize those who helped plan and prepare, those who attended, the small businesses who donated items

to the silent auction, and the members of the community who took the time to stop in. I’m also very thankful of the many people, near and far, who sent monetary donations or school supplies which helped me to reach my goal of filling a suitcase! All efforts combined resulted in two large suitcases, 100lbs, of school supplies sent to the schools in Arusha, Tanzania. All 70 students at the CHETI 5 School received a full, individually packed pencil case containing each a pack of pencils, erasers, a notebook, pens, crayons, a ruler, a pencil sharpener and some Canadian maple candies. I was able to send a teacher’s care package and supplies for the students who attend the CHETI 4 School! Unexpectedly, I was also able to send a monetary donation of $330 that was put towards the well project that is taking place in their school community. As the group of Canadians set to travel to Arusha on April 29th, I was anxious as I knew my suitcase would be arriving soon and pictures and videos of the children would start appearing. I was overwhelmed by the first photos I received, all smiles with a few tears. There was a group photo of the children gathered around their teacher holding their new belongings, photos of the students holding a picture of me and a photo of one of the girls we have been in contact with for two years doing a happy dance in celebration! It was my pleasure to have seen the project through, although I could not have done so without

the help of the generous people who are all around me. I look forward to contributing in the years to come, hopefully working towards the opportunity to deliver a suitcase to the schools myself. Through the course of the project I targeted those of all age groups in hopes to bring awareness to the importance of global issues and the organizations that support them, I hoped to emphasize the power of children to children while keeping on top of the education topic, and the realization of the fact that the “things” in life in which we surround ourselves with everyday are not always as important as we see them to be.”

www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Seaway News - Thursday, July 23, 2015 - 13

After the success of a local pay-it-forward project, a young Cornwall-area teen has a mountain of thank yous to circulate. Chlöe Zummach, a 15-year-old student at Rothwell Osnabruck, wrapped up a school project that saw her fill a suitcase with much-needed learning supplies for children in Arusha, Tanzania. The suitcase was taken to Tanzania by Allison Fraser, a representative of Mom2Mom Africa, a Canadian non-profit agency that helps to educate and empower women in that continent. “Our family has been part of it for three years,” said Chloe. “It’s something I’m interested in. We support the education needs of a girl named Prisca.” Following the success of the project, she reached out to Seaway News with a letter of thank for her supporters. We have included it below: “While preparing the suitcases, I thought it would be easy to open up a word document and begin writing instructions as to what goes where and to whom once it arrived in Africa, but I quickly corrected myself by knowing that this project meant much more to me than to do that. It was the type of experience I struggle to put into words, all of which I have Alison (Fraser) to thank for. This ‘Fish’ had us all hooked Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

“In your story, just call me ‘Fish.’” “I’m not calling you Fish.” And so began my first interview with John Earle, years ago when Cornwall still had restaurants like Mexicali Rosa’s and bands like Rapunzil’s Tower – a pair of city icons from the past that he helped put on the map, in one way or another. He wanted to be known by the moniker ‘Fish’…a more suitable nickname would be hard to find. Sometimes in this life dreams are just too big and the ideas so overwhelming that any one person cannot experience them. But John enjoyed them all, and then some. We reported, very painfully, John’s death Saturday night following a scubadiving incident. To say that his passing has sent shockwaves through the community is a profound understatement. John was, and still very much is, one of the most creative people to call Cornwall home in some time. He ran for political office, made movies, performed on stage and ran a business. John even helped invent a board game that is still, I think, tucked away in some closet in my home (Concatenate, is its name). If there was a project, an idea or a task that needed to be done, John was your man because chances are he had been dreaming that dream long before you had. John knew everyone and everyone knew him. Grief and condolences have flooded the city, most of which cover the fact that John Earle was full of life, and dreamed big - bigger than most, and achieved only by a few. When I learned of his passing the first thing that entered my mind is I would no longer have someone to wave at while on the way to work, picking up groceries or just out for a ride. For whatever reason, John could be found passing us in his little blue Beetle, or that red SUV. Like, every day…it would almost be creepy if it hadn’t become so routine. And every time he passed by there was a toothy grin and a cheerful wave. It illustrates how closely-knit our community has become, and how we often take each other for granted until one of us is gone.

John James Earle 1972-2015

“My greatest adventures were with John,” Frank Burelle

When he ran for office last year, his first attempt at a political run against MPP Jim McDonell, John knew he was in tough. But you would never know it from the way he carried himself both on and off the record.

I had set up a time to interview John at his Pitt Street campaign headquarters, where I happened upon him speaking to a bunch of school children that had congregated on the sidewalk. I snapped a photo of the exchange, and afterwards asked him what was going on. “Oh, nothing. They were just walking by with their teacher and asked me what I was doing,” he said with a laugh. John was also aboard the same hot-air balloon as my wife and I during Lift-Off a few years ago. He was completing another of his film-making projects for the local tourism office and had hitched a ride to see our region from the air. He took a picture of my wife and I and some of our family, and made more than a few cheerful wisecracks during our flight…including one that will live forever on a short video I happened to take when we landed (some might say crashed) in a corn field. John never missed a beat, and loved every minute of that flight, his political run, his business, his movies, his friends and his family.

The stories and memories related here are nothing compared to the wealth of goodwill John helped to spread in our community. Jamie Carr, Frank Burelle, Ron Piquette and a host of others with whom he partnered on projects will no doubt find the days ahead to be both long and arduous. His family is likewise feeling a pain no one should have to endure. Perhaps my favourite tribute this week came from his best friend, Frank. “My greatest adventures were with John,” he said. “What makes me sad is we didn’t just lose John…We’ve all lost out on what he was going to do next. What other insane projects or ideas did he have? We’ve lost that. You don’t know how big his dreams were going to get.” You got that right, Frank. May John rest in peace, and his family and close friends find strength.

Don’t let it happen to you Dear editor, When it comes to accidents, it’s common to think, oh, it will never happen to us. That is what we thought until our nine-year-old daughter, Zoe, a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, lost her leg in a lawn mower accident.

A few years ago, Zoe was playing outside when she slipped on the grass and fell underneath a riding lawn mower. This was a difficult time for us but today Zoe is an active and energetic child thanks to help from The War Amps with financial assistance for artificial legs, regional seminars and peer

It took a single responding officer 25 minutes to arrive. “Maybe I didn’t have the right connections,” he said with a sly chuckle. Rolland Larochelle became the first Cornwall firefighter to die in the line of duty, but it wasn’t wasn’t while fighting a fire. Larochelle’s tragic death came in the icy waters of the St. Lawrence River while attempting a risky but brave rescue attempt of two men who had fallen through the ice at the foot of McConnell Avenue in the early afternoon of March 2, 1964. The 37-year-old father of three young children - twins Gilles and Joanne aged five and 11-year-old Celine - volunteered to make the rescue attempt along with Capt. Clarence Snider. The two gingerly crawled out on a fire ladder extended over the ice. Neither the fire department nor police department had a boat available to help in the rescue. A few feet into the attempt, the ladder broke through a pocket of black ice, plunging both firefighters, wearing coats and boots, into the freezing water. The captain was pulled out. Larochelle grabbed a rope thrown to him but he couldn’t hold on and slipped beneath the water as horrified would-be rescuers looked on. The sevenyear veteran’s body was recovered by scuba divers two hours later in 20 feet of water. Firefighter Larochelle had answered his last alarm. A news release from the Cornwall Professional Firefighters’ Association noted that “The rescue attempt (of the two civilians) proved successful, but the cost was high.” An emotional Fire Chief Lucien Carriere said, “Today, we lost a good man.” The day could have ended with more deaths. Both civilians were pulled to shore despite spending at least 10 minutes in the icy water.

First to respond to the call that two civilians had fallen through the ice were Det. Herb Raymond and Const. Cecil Runions. Both fell through the ice twice in rescue attempts of the two civilians and firefighters Snider and Larochelle. Const. James Burke fell through the ice while attempting to save Larochelle who was struggling in the water. Three days later the body of the first Cornwall firefighter killed in the line of duty was carried on a pumper from Miller’s Funeral Home, past the old fire hall on Pitt Street to St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church. Hundreds of residents lined the streets despite a cold wind-driven late winter rain. City police charged the two civilians with being a common nuisance. The firefighter’s son Gilles, five at the time, didn’t grow up to be a firefighter. He chose a career in law enforcement. The former deputy chief of Ottawa Police Service is police chief in Kingston. TRIVIA ANSWER The second A and W in Cornwall - first one on Vincent Massey Drive still at the same site - was on the west side of Pitt Street between Sixth and Seventh, now Lola’s Pub. For a period of time after it closed it was a dry cleaners. TRIVIA In 1937 the federal government announced that $100,000 had been budgeted for construction of a federal building in Cornwall, the first time since 1882 that Cornwall had received a federally-financed public building. The building is still in operation. HERE AND THERE Former SD and G Ontario Provincial Police inspector Mike McDonell in charge of security at the Pan-Am Games in Toronto. Many memorable maritime experiences Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com Within the last year I have been on the water many times. Other than air, water is my favourite travel medium. I’ve been on a 3,000 passenger cruise ship going through the Panama Canal, a ferry going from Manitoulin Island to the Bruce Peninsula and our canoe on the St. Lawrence River. The cruise ship experience was memorable because of its many stop-overs between Fort Lauderdale and Vancouver, its enriching lectures and the wonderful variety of dining opportunities. Our passage across the Georgian Bay’s Main Channel was memorable because of its sparkling clear waters and the rocky sedimentary layers that underlie the many islands and headlands that we encountered en route. Our many days of paddling down the St. Lawrence, from Kingston to Cornwall were filled with delightful sojourns on its islands and in welcoming harbours such as Gananoque, Rockport and Waddington. However, my most memorable maritime travel experience ever was this February on a

Cuban ferry crossing from Habana Vieja to the fortress that overlooks the harbour. If you’ve ever taken the Glenora ferry from Prince Edward County to mainland Adolphustown, I can use it to give you a comparative idea of size. That Ontario ferry has a capacity of 21 vehicles and 117 passengers. It’s modern and well-maintained. In contrast, the Cuban ferry is about one third the size, wellbeyond retirement age and probably receives an absolute minimum of maintenance. We were the first to board it. Our intent was to remain at the gaping opening on the port side because it would offer an unobstructed vantage point for photo opportunities of the city. More and more people scrambled aboard. The crowd shoved their way past us and into the enclosed deck area behind us. After it was loaded beyond capacity, even more people squeezed aboard, blocking all hope of access to a closet allegedly holding life jackets. For more than one reason, we were both sweating. Thoughts of the many stories of overloaded Indian Ocean island-hopping freighters and ferries swarmed into my mind. So did the names Titanic and Lusitania.

If this thing gets swamped, I don’t want to be trapped below deck, trampled, suffocated and drowning. That’s why we resisted being forced away from the opening on the vessel’s hull. We determinedly clung to its framing. As soon as the little ferry’s engines stopped shuddering, we were the first to disembark upon arrival at the fortress side of the harbour. Fortunately, it had not been a dark and stormy

night. Methodically, we both tallied the number of passengers as they eagerly scrambled onto the wharf. 278 – and a bicycle had been on board! In Canada, the absolute maximum would have been no more than eighty. The moral of the story is this: always have an exit strategy, a Plan B and a ‘What if...’ procedure.

Mother Canada monument will boost tourism I am not a huge fan of mammoth monuments. But, during my recent travels, I have built up a lot of affection for some monuments and how these have helped boost tourism. The most recent and perfect example is Christ the Redeemer monument visited in Brazil. Other monuments visited include the Big Ben in London, Machu Picchu in Peru, Taj Mahal in India, the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia, Blue Domed Church in Santorini in Greece and the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark, etc. etc. There are numerous other monuments around the globe. These monuments are huge tourist

Homeopathy for FEVER BLISTERS Fever blisters are caused by a contagious virus called “Herpes

Simplex”. Once a person is infected with oral herpes, the virus remains inactive, waiting for a weakened defence system to have the next outbreak. Sam was susceptible to these fever blisters when term papers and exams were approaching. He’d often get them on the lip, but lately he’d been getting several of them on the edge of his nostril. There would be itching and tingling for a few hours then a few fluid-filled blisters would erupt, and then finally, a yellow crust would form over the sores. These painful blisters looked awful for 7 to 10 days. Sam started taking the remedy Rhus Toxicodendron as soon as the tingling started and was surprised to find that the two very small blisters that did come out were uncomfortable for 3 days then nothing was left. The student understands that managing his stress is the answer to his herpes problem and promises to schedule an appointment with me to work on that issue. That way, Homeopathy can help by re-establishing the immune system to better control the stress. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease, so two people with the same problem may require different remedies.

Newfoundlanders who died during overseas conflicts and whose remains are buried in foreign lands or lost in the depths of the ocean. Many argue it will spur the economy, create many jobs where they are needed most. Others argue this proposed monument, expected to cost between $25-million and $60-million, will spoil the natural beauty of the area. I don’t buy this argument. This monument should get started and should be completed when Canada marks a special anniversary in 2017. It will be country’s 150th birthday. On the other hand, I am not too impressed with the proposal to erect the Memorial to the victims of Communism at the proposed site in Ottawa. My reason is simply the proposed site is not the right fit for this monument.

attractions. These types of monuments are awesome and magnets. This is precisely the reason I support the hulking Mother Canada monument proposed at Green Cove near Ingonish in Nova Scotia. Controversy over this project has swirled for years. It is time Canada adds another attraction to boost tourism. The Niagara Falls and other attractions like Kenora’s Husky the Musky and Sudbury’s Big Nickel are simply not enough. We have to attract tourists to lesser known parts of Canada like Nova Scotia. Plans are to build a huge 24-metre tall statue on Green Cove in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. This Mother Canada centerpiece pays tribute to more than 114,000 Canadians and

Focusing on seniors: Cornwall gets $35K age-friendly community planning grant Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – A funding boost from the province will help ensure that seniors in Cornwall can participate fully in community life. The city received $35,000 from the Ontario Government’s Age-Friendly Community Planning Grant Program, the maximum provincial grant allowed for medium-sized

communities with populations between 20,000 and 99,000. Cornwall’s average age is above the provincial average of 40.4 years, and continues to rise. In 2006, the median age in the city was 42.7 years, which increased to 45.6 years by 2011. “Since Cornwall has a higher proportion of older adults it is critical that we actively continue to seek opportunities that will allow residents to lead active, safe and meaningful lives in our community,” said Mayor Leslie

O’Shaughnessy. “We will be creating an advisory committee to provide recommendations, guidance and advice on this important initiative.” The City of Cornwall has posted a call for two community members to join the advisory committee, asking that applicants be knowledgeable in at least one of the following areas: outdoor spaces & buildings, transportation, housing, respect and social inclusion, social participation, communication

and information, civic participation and employment, or community support and health service. Click here to access the application form. Project coordinator Carmen Cousineau will also be meeting residents, organizations, social groups, businesses and the non-profit sector to gather information and suggestions. For more information, email ccousineau@ cornwall.ca or call (613) 362-6514.

The heart and soul of the Glengarry Highland Games are the pipe bands. Each year the Games proudly hosts the North American Pipe Band Championship™ that attracts bands from across North America and beyond. The Championship is the last major competition before the Worlds’ that take place two weeks later in Scotland and pipe bands that win at Maxville are confident that they will fare well against their peers in those competitions. It is no wonder then that the number of pipe bands competing at the Games is larger than anywhere else in North America. This year’s North American Championship on Saturday, August 1st will see over 55 pipe bands competing in five grades. Grade One, the highest level, has 4 of North America’s top pipe bands entered to vie for the honour of being best on the continent. Grade 2 has 10, Grade 3 has 13, Grade 4 has 14 and Grade 5 rounds out the field with 15 pipe bands. Bands will travel from eight provinces including Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan, and eight states representing California, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and Ohio. The grounds will be filled with the stirring sounds of the pipes and drums with pipe bands competing in Judging Circles spread throughout the Games site. Come early to ensure a good spot at the popular Grade One Circle with its bleachers and shady trees for the multitudes of fans who gather to make their own decisions on who is the worthiest of the bands. World’s Finest Come to Judge the Pipe Bands: Along with many fine judges for the Professional Solos and Pipe Band Competitions, Pipe Band Director Gilbert Young has secured two of the best piping judges in the world in piper John Wilson from Scotland and drummer John Fisher from Vancouver. Two Days of A Wide Range of Piping Competitions: The North American Pipe Band Championship™ isn’t the only time to hear excellent pipe band music at the Games. On Friday, July 31, the amateur solo piping and drumming competitions take place followed on Saturday by the professional solo piping and drumming events. In addition, there are amateur piobaireachd (pronounced pee-brock) competitions on Friday as well as Professional Piobaireachd on Saturday. While the Games site is alive with the sounds of the pipes and drums, there is another piping competition taking place. On Friday in the United and Anglican churches in Maxville, the classical Piobaireachd Society Gold Medal Contest will be underway. Director Jack Yourt announces that this prestigious event has a full slate of pipers and that he has indeed had to turn six competitors away. The Glengarry Highland Games are the only games in North America to host the Piobaireachd Society Gold Medal Competition that is sanctioned by the Piobaireachd Society of Scotland. The Games attracts thousands of people for many reasons – vying for a trophy in one of the many competitions, searching out more about Scottish heritage, listening to the fiddles or harps, dancing up a storm to favourite celtic bands, being awed by the Tattoo spectacular or visiting with friends and family. All of music, movement and laughter come to a hush as the time draws near for the pipe bands’ entry onto the field for the closing massed bands. Wave after wave of pipe bands march onto the field from all corners to the skirl of the pipes playing the crowd’s favourite tunes. Cheers go up from the crowd until over 1600 musicians are arranged on the field before them. Then the crowd goes quiet again as the bands start up in unison for the most unforgettable sight and sound of the massed pipe bands performance.

ENTERTAINMENT & RESTAURANTS

FOOD FEST: New downtown event helps chase dreams CORNWALL, Ontario - The city’s newest summer festival, Cornwall Food Fest, benefitting the support program for developmentally disabled adults, Beyond 21, will be making its debut next month. To be held on Saturday, August 22, from 11 am to 8 pm, the event will feature a variety of food trucks, local artisans, vendors, musicians and a beer tent. The United Way will also have a children’s area at Pommier Square. “Basically, we’re just having a big party in the downtown,” said event organizer, Jane McLaren. “Local restaurants are getting on board. The ones on Pitt Street are either going to do pop-up tents, or have specials on their patios or in-house; people are excited.” “It really started as a dream,” she said. “As a parent who was watching her child grow up, and when she hit 21, had to leave the high school program and there was no place for her to go.” McLaren went on to explain that at the age of 21, as young adults, they do get into some programs, but for the most part, they sit and watch television or play video games. Their parents might have to quit their jobs to stay home with them, or they have to hire somebody to “babysit” their child. “And even though they have developmental

disabilities, they are adults, so they know when they are being babysat. That’s not what they want; it’s not what any of us want at the age of 21, and they see their peers graduating, leaving and making plans, school, college, university or a job.” That’s were Beyond 21 was really born out of, she said. “The whole premise is we call ourselves dream chasers. The people that come to us have dreams and our role is to help them reach those dreams to the best of their ability - independent living, getting a job, volunteering or just being with friends. They all have dreams, and our goal is to chase those dreams with them. Beyond 21 is a place where they could go, on a daily basis, and be connected with people, peers, community and maintain involvement in the lifestyle that they had known from school.” Volunteers are needed in many areas, to take tickets, in the beer tent, and general runners as well as musicians to volunteer their talents. There is still room for more artisans and vendors ($50 table fee). “Everyone who is participating will be labeled a dream chaser for the day,” said McLaren. For further information, to volunteer or to become a vendor, contact at jane.mclaren@beyond21.org or call 343-370-5521.

It may help to imagine that the tee is a thumbtack that you’re trying to push into your left hand at impact. When you lift your right palm off the grip to help close the clubface, you’re headed left. If you start hitting some shots to the right, that’s O.K. Just start rotating your right hand over your left earlier in your downswing, but always keep your right hand on the grip. Why It Works Many good players — even guys like Fred Couples and Vijay Singh — let their right palm come off the club to keep the ball from going right. For guys with great timing like Singh and Couples this can work, but for most players it’s a recipe for regular snap-hooks. Keep it simple and make sure your right hand stays above your left in the downswing. It’s a tip that cured Lee Trevino’s hook, and it can cure yours, too. 6201054

The problem Place a tee here to help you keep your right hand in place. Your most common mistake off the tee during the round you just finished was short and left — an ugly snap-hook that got you into tons of trouble. The solution You snap it when your right hand slips underneath your left hand in the downswing. The clubface swings open, and the only way to get it square is to arch your right wrist and snap the clubface — and the ball — to the left. To fix it, keep the heel of your right palm on the grip on the way back down so it doesn’t slip underneath and force you to make the snap compensation. Try this Take a tee and place it between your two hands as you grip the club; the tee should be wedged between the top knuckle of your left thumb and the heel of your right palm at the

Kings name captain, new head coach CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall River Kings have filled two leadership roles from within. Brennan Barker, a 30-year-old defenceman from Long Sault, has been named the team’s captain. “Brennan has been with this team since Day 1 and he’s a great leader on and off the ice” said Rick 2C, 100% Black + Green PMS 368

Lalonde, general manager of the River Kings. “He’s a good community guy and well respected in the dressing room.” Barker replaces Steve Simoes, who retired at the conclusion of the 2014-15 campaign. “I’m very honoured to be named captain and I know I have big shoes to fill,” said Barker, who was fortunate to have Simoes as his stall mate in the locker room the last three years. “I can use him as a blue print because he did such an amazing job.” The hard-hitting, stay-at-home defenceman had three points and 90 penalty minutes in 31 games for the River Kings last season. He also chipped in three points in Cornwall’s seven-game series with Sorel.

Barker believes the potential the team showed in its post-season play is just the beginning. “It’s very exciting going forward with the stability in place to build on what we did last year in the playoffs,” said the captain. “We will have a new swagger and confidence that is only going to help us starting the season.” Lalonde himself will step behind the bench this season; he will serve as the team’s GM and head coach. “I’ve been around this league a few years now and I’m ready for the challenge,” said Lalonde. “I understand the differences between junior and senior Quebec hockey and I’m looking forward to moving this program in the right direction.” Lalonde resigned from his head coaching

duties with St. Jerome (Jr. AAA) and will focus solely on the River Kings in 2015-16. Meanwhile, Lalonde has come to terms with two key players. Antony Courcelles, the team’s leading scorer last season, will return to Cornwall. After a season overseas in France, the 23-year-old rookie from Laval led the Kings in goals (21) and points (34) in 2014-15. “He’s an exciting player to watch and has found a home in the LNAH,” said Lalonde. “We expect big things from Antony now that he knows the league.” Cornwall has also agreed to terms with local defenceman Ryan Sullivan. The 6-foot-4, 210 lb. defenceman from Cardinal, ON, appeared in 23 games with the River Kings last season.

The Cornwall Colts are pleased to once again offer a free season ticket to all “Littles” with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cornwall and District. In front, from left, are Ian MacInnis, Colts owner, David Murphy, Cornwall Colts marketing & promotions. In the middle, from left, are Tiana, Savanna, Trinity, and Desiree. and In back, from left, are Amanda Brisson, BBBS executive director, and Danielle Brisson, BBBS caseworker.

Fabric softeners are waxy materials that are related to soap. They work by coating your laundry with waxy lubricants and humectant chemicals. The lubricants let fibers slide past each other, reducing wrinkling. They also separate a napped fabric’s fibers and stand them on end, which makes a towel, for instance, feel fluffy. The humectancts help the fabric retain moisture to dissipate the static charges that would otherwise cause clothes to cling and sparks to fly when you pull them apart. There are three basic types of fabric softeners. Rinse liquids are added to the wash during the rinse cycle. Dryer sheets are absorbed with softener. When you put a sheet into the dryer along with the laundry, contact and heat release the softener. Detergents with fabric softeners are added at the start of the wash cycle. The most effective is liquid softeners but dryer sheets soften to roughly the same degree and detergents with fabric softener is the lesser of the two.

Ribfest begins on Friday Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Can you smell the ribs? We sure can. Cornwall Seaway Lions Club Ribfest is this weekend, with all it’s lip-smacking, mouthwatering, smokey delights. The Cornwall Seaway Lions has announced the finalized entertainment line-up for Ribfest 2015 earlier this year. The sizzling summer festival, sponsored once again by Ontarioeast.net, is happening

from Friday to Sunday at Lamoureux Park and is free to enter. Kicking off the festival on Friday is local singer and songwriter Grace Willison. Headliners include AC/DC Who Made Who on Friday, KISS Sonic Boom on Saturday and Ridin Shotgun on Sunday. “We’re very excited with the bands we’ve booked this year,” said Phil Shorey, event chair, in a previous interview. “We’ll be rocking the park, no doubt.” In addition to great entertainment, awardwinning ribbers and a wide variety of other food

vendors, sponsors, and exhibitors will be offering their goods and services for sale. “All of last year’s ribbers are back for 2015,” said Shorey. “Be prepared for the great smell of BBQ to take over the city once again.” You can find the full line-up of Ribfest on the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club website at http:// cornwallseawaylionsclub.ca. Ribfest is July 24 to July 26 at Lamoureux Park.

Three Women

Three women go to Mexico to celebrate their college graduation. They get drunk, and wake up in jail, only to discover that they are to be executed in the morning, though none of them can remember what they did the night before. The first one, is strapped in the electric chair and is asked if she has any last words. She says: “I just graduated from Trinity Bible College and believe in the almighty power of God to intervene on the behalf of the innocent..” The executioner throws the switch and nothing happens. They all immediately fall to the floor on their knees, beg for forgiveness and release her. The second one, is strapped in and gives her last words. “I just graduated from the University of Illinois School of Law, and I believe in the power of Justice to intervene on the behalf of the innocent.” They throw the switch and again, nothing happens. Again, they all immediately fall to their knees, beg for forgiveness, and release her. The last one,is strapped in and says: “Well, I’m from Ohio and just graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and I’ll tell ya right now, y’all ain’t gonna electrocute nobody if you don’t plug this thing in.”

Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips: The best maintenance tip is to have a licensed professional service, evaluate and start your central air conditioning unit before the cooling season starts. Here are a few tips to keep your cooling system running effectively and efficiently: • Check your indoor drain hose for leaks or blockages. • Clean or replace furnace air filters once a month. • With the power off, use a hose to keep the outside air conditioning unit clean and clear of debris. • Basements seldom need cooling so close basement air vents and close doors to the basement. • Shut off the water supply to the furnace humidifier and turn it off for the cooling season.

Dogs get hot too! Please remember to keep your dogs in a cool safe place this summer. Keep Mowing – Keep it stable ~ Mow across the early mornings for your walks together and make sure they have plenty of fresh cool water slope when using a hand mower. Drive up and at their disposal. They depend on their owners down the slope for stability when using a riding to care for them and in return, they will give you mower. unconditional love!

Water is the most important resource on earth and Canada is blessed with approximately one fifth of the world’s freshwater. But this supply is not endless and we need to do a better job protecting and conserving it. Polluted water can impact fish and wildlife leading to reduced fertility, damage to immune systems and deformities. And remember, our drinking water may come from these same systems. While our water may look clean and pristine, a closer look may prove otherwise. Let’s all work together to conserve this precious resource. Let’s be more aware of our actions so that we can put an end to pollution. You can conserve water by reducing the amount you use, avoid the use of pesticides or harmful household products and don’t release organisms from one water body into another.
