Ribfest cooks up an appetite for thousands CORNWALL, Ontario - The sizzling grills from the fourth edition of the popular threeday event filled the air with mouth-watering aromas at Lamoureux Park. The Cornwall Seaway Lions Club’s annual Ribfest served up live entertainment, fairway, Carnival Diablo’s World of Wonders, dozens of exhibitors, and, of course, ribs, from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26. Event chair Phil Shorey says about 30,000 people filled the park on Friday alone. “It was chaos,” he joked. To accommodate the growing crowd, the beer tent was expanded an additional 20-feet. The city’s skyline is emptier this summer without the usual pillars of concrete and hotair ballons drifting by, but Cornwall’s appetite for Ribfest rumbles on. Shorey attributes the free admission and entertainment for the festival’s continued growth, as well as a dedicated group of volunteers and loyal sponsors. He thanked Ontario East, Budweiser, and the Kinsmen Club of

Cornwall. “Other than that, the ribs are the real draw,” he said. This year’s lineup of grill masters: Chop Shop BBQ, Crabby’s BBQ Shaq, Fat Boy’s BBQ, Ribs Royale (2014 Ribfest champs), Smokehouse Bandits, and Pig Kahuna Island BBQ. The ribbers compete annually in several categories: best sauce, best ribs, best pulled pork, best chicken, and best overall ribs. Except this year. “We’re not judging this weekend. There was a problem in 2014, so we let it slide,” said Shorey. “One of the ribbers wasn’t happy another restaurant cleaned house.” Feast your eyes on Carnival Diablo: “Come and see the freaks” Believe it or not, Ribfest is about more than ribs. Carnival Diablo’s World of Wonders, a menagerie of freaks and strange artifacts, awaited Carnival Diablo’s Scott McClelland and Jessica ‘The Human Marble’ Huether at Ribfest those who dared to enter. in Cornwall on Saturday, July 25, 2015. Adam Brazeau Tour guide Jessica ‘The Human Marble’ McClelland performed in Prof. Crookshank’s Huether is also a sideshow performer. Her act and lying on a bed of nails. includes walking on pathways of glass shards Carnival Diablo owner and operator Scott Traveling Medicine Show on Sunday. 5776863

Former Williamstown man killed in B.C. ‘speed-flying’ accident Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A former Williamstown resident was killed in a so-called “speed-flying” incident in British Columbia on Sunday, the coroner’s office has said. Kyle MacDonald-Wolochatiuk died in the incident at the Stawamus Chief Mountain, a popular hiking and hang gliding area in Squamish, B.C., his father Nick told Seaway News in an email. Barbara McLintock, a spokesperson for the B.C. coroner’s office said MacDonaldWolochatiuk died after hitting the ground when he encountered problems during a speed-flying session at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday. McLintock said speed-flying is not unlike paragliding “but you use a much smaller wing... to give you a more adrenaline-filled descent.

“It’s one of the extreme sports.” McLintock said MacDonald-Wolochatiuk crashed after experiencing some problems in the air. “It seems probable he hit a tree. Then fell all the way to the ground,” she said. MacDonald-Wolochatiuk’s death is tragic for a number of reasons. His wife Krista Besner is due to deliver a child Wednesday, and his sister Kara was killed 20 years ago. “One life has just been ended, and another is on its way to take his place,” said Nick, who is also a longtime contributor to Seaway News through his ‘Dances With Words’ column. RCMP in Squamish, B.C. told Seaway News that officers responded to a search and rescue request Sunday but have since turned the investigation over to the provincial coroner’s office.

Missing USB stick mailed back to its owner - but who is the Good Samaritan? Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Lunenburg man who had lost a USB stick at a Brookdale Avenue grocery store figured it was as good as gone. That is, until he opened the mail last Wednesday. Jonah Gillard received a polite note, and

his coveted USB stick, in the mail and couldn’t be happier. The only problem is, the mysterious Good Samaritan did not include their name in a short letter sent along with the stick. “My grandfather found this at Food Basics. Just hoping to return it to its owner,” was all the note said. Gillard is understandably relieved.

Gillard has posted imagery of the USB stick and the note on Facebook, in hopes that he can track down the person who snagged it and mailed it back. Gillard can be found on Facebook.

Sr. Barbara Hackett reflects on multiple decades of faith Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - When Sr. Barbara Hackett began life as a nun, things were decidedly different. It was the 1950s, and nuns wore habits, they taught here in Canada and as many as 20 young girls might choose a life of faith at a time. Today the habits are gone, many nuns are focusing their work in the Third World instead of more developed countries and the chances of finding a young Canadian girl who wishes to enter a convent are slim to nun...er, none. Hackett, part of the Blessed Sacrament

parish in Cornwall, will mark her 60th year as a nun on Aug. 16. Celebrating 60 years as a nun is quickly becoming commonplace, as at a recent anniversary celebration Hackett said others marking 50, 60, 75 and even 80 were noted. But what is not so common is the strength of her faith in God. It’s special. “Seeing God in others - it’s not something I was aware of before,” she said. “Talking to people...you see God in them. I knew he was in me, but I started to see him in others too.” Her life of faith almost never happened. As a young girl she and friend Inis Tucker were on their way to visit the sister at the Sisters of Holy Cross in their hometown of Montreal.

She moved to Cornwall is 2002 and was a companion of Sr. Terry Wilson. She holds a special place in her heart for Sr. Margaret Mary Conway, who helped her focus on her studies many times. Hackett added the future of nuns, especially those who dedicate their lives to educating people, will be in developing nations. “I don’t think our work is in Canada anymore,” she said. “Our work is in Third World countries.”

Tucker wanted to be a nun...Hackett did not. “It had to be the grace of God, because I never wanted to be a nun,” she laughed. “But I just decided one day, passing the school, that I had to give this a try.” Try she did. While Tucker never became a nun, her friend Hackett has spent 60 years among the faithful…and not so faithful. Most of her work as a nun involved education in Montreal, Ottawa and native reserve in Northern Ontario and Alexandria.

$100k invested in trail rehab at bird sanctuary CORNWALL, Ontario - Nearly 400 feet of a heavily-used scenic trail at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary is being replaced starting this summer. MP Guy Lauzon announced Monday the government is forking over $100,000 “as an investment” in the Red Wing Trail at the sanctuary. The reconstruction will widened to six feet, to accommodate sanctuary guests of all abilities. “This is not an expense. This is an investment,” Lauzon told officials with the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, as well as members of the Friends of the Sanctuary, on-hand for Monday’s announcement. “I’ve never seen such an enthusiastic group like this group, especially when it comes to fundraising.” About $190,000 has been raised to date to reconstruct the trails at the bird sanctuary. Chuck Clavet, president of the Friends of the Sanctuary, said the reconstruction work will add to the tens of thousands of people who have visited the nature area west of Cornwall near Ingleside. “It’s going to open it up to a large amount of

people who wouldn’t normally go out into the woods,” he said. Earlier this year the federal government provided about $45,000 for similar work on the trail. “(The funding) will also allow us to begin development work on Phase 3 for the Blue Heron Trail,” said Lou Seiler, manager of parks and recreation facilities for the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. “This is an important project that will make our nature trails safe and accessible for the thousands of visitors who come here each year.” The bird sanctuary is a wetland area west of Cornwall home to huge numbers of wildlife as well as flora. It includes trails for hiking and cycling.

MP Guy Lauzon, left, discusses a $100,000 investment with Friends of the Sanctuary president Chuck Clavet.

CORNWALL, Ontario - New decorative banners have been erected on Second Street to commemorate Veterans Walk. The project was a joint venture between the City of Cornwall and the Cornwall Legion Branch 297. “This is a dream come true – a project three years in the making,” said Ken Heagle, past president of Branch 297. “We would like to thank Mayor O’Shaughnessy and city council for their support.” Veterans Walk was created to recognize soldiers whose sacrifice is honoured each Remembrance Day at a ceremony at the

Cornwall Cenotaph. Veterans Walk links the cenotaph to nearby Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297. The banner design features the official poppy image of the Royal Canadian Legion. During the period leading up to Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a symbol of national pride and respect, a visual pledge to never forget the more than 117,000 Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. Cornwall city council approved the project earlier this year, and it has been supported by Cornwall Electric, owners of the poles on

Children and youth in BGC summer programs harvested the first yield of radishes, carrots, lettuce, and beans from the 506 Clubhouse organic garden beds that were planted this May.

The junior green thumbs tasted the benefits of growing their own food after mixing the freshly picked ingredients into a humungous salad at a special luncheon on Thursday (July 17). “The kids are really embracing it, and willing to get their hands dirty,” said BGC program manager Deborah Locke. “It’s a great partnership we hope continues to bloom.” From starting seedlings to transplanting,

Cornwall-SDG EMS rolling into South Glengarry CORNWALL, Ontario - Knowing every minute is precious in emergency situations, first responders are hoping to arrive on scene earlier, thanks to the new paramedic response units in Lancaster and Long Sault. Cornwall-SDG Emergency Medical Services added the pair of SUVs (bringing the total to three) to rush emergency responders to very sick patients as they wait to be taken to the hospital. The PRUs, combined with existing paramedic resources on the road, are scheduled to roll out on Sunday and will run during the day for 12-hour shifts. Four new paramedics have also been hired to help with the enhanced coverage. “By reducing the need for resources to respond from the city to the county, and vice versa, our resources will be better positioned throughout the day to arrive at an emergency in less time,” said Myles Cassidy, general manager, shared services and EMS chief. The service enhancement stems from a

consultant’s review of EMS response times in Cornwall and SDG that began in the fall of 2013, which identified options to maximize existing resources, including shift times, deployment posts, staffing and resource configurations. “Cornwall-SDG EMS has a proud record of service and this enhancement will serve to build on our solid track record,” said Cassidy. The enhanced emergency coverage will cost taxpayers $477,567, with the provincial government covering half of the amount. The remaining amount would be split between the City of Cornwall (21 per cent or $100,289) and the United Counties (28 per cent or $138,494), based on the existing sharing agreement. “This is a tangible example of excellent intermunicipal cooperation between partners,” said SDG County Warden Eric Duncan. “We are committed to ensuring all residents have the best possible access to EMS resources.” Cornwall-SDG EMS provides 24-hour 365-day

An integral component of the regional 911 system, paramedics respond to victims of sudden illness or injury. Highly trained and skilled in the pre-hospital management of a wide spectrum of emergencies, paramedics attempt to stabilize and

render treatment to patients at the scene and on route to medical facilities. In 2014, the service responded to just under 13,000 calls for service. As the regional designated delivery agent for Land Ambulance Service, the City of Cornwall maintains six ambulance stations throughout the United Counties of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry.

Get ready for a patriotic Williamstown Fair committee that worked on creating a new flag for Canada. The Matheson family’s strong Glengarry connection reaches back to Sir John Johnson. To focus attention on the 50th anniversary, Canadian flags have been installed on HydroOne and Bell poles along the north side of John Street from the high school to the fair entrance. The Williamstown Fair Board supplied the Maple Leaf banners, the Royal Canadian Legion

Branch #544 in Lancaster provided the aluminum poles and mounting hardware, and the Township of South Glengarry handled installation. The flags will remain until after the fair. Visitors can expect plenty of family fun steeped in agriculture with a kids’ tractor pull, extreme cowboy race, Highland dance competition, K-9 agility competition, home and garden competition, 4-H demo, horse show, petting zoo, and livestock on display.

Live entertainment will be played on center stage all weekend, including local talents Roxanne Delage, Bang on the Ear, Jesse Ferguson, and Nancy Beaudette. The Williamstown Fair begins at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday (August 6) and wraps up Sunday (August 9). Day passes: $10. Weekend passes: $20. Children 12 and under get in free. ENTERTAINMENT & RESTAURANTS

Theatre in the park asks audience to suspend disbelief Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - “Is progress always a good thing?”, is the central question in The Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, Seascapes, which opens on Thursday, in Lamoureux Park. As part of the Arts in the Park summer entertainment series, in association with the City of Cornwall, the play is about change, evolution and reclaiming lost youth, explained director, Paul Aubin. “It is about two couples who are facing profound changes in their lives,” he said. “One of the couples, a husband and wife, of late middle-age, on the cusp of their retirement, are joined by a second couple, - now this where the element of fantasy comes in - two sea lizards, who are contemplating the very frightening yet exciting possibility of evolving into land-based creatures.” Aubin explains that the audience will have to come into this with a much stronger suspension of disbelief, than your average night at the theatre, but, he says, that once they get past the element of fantasy, they will begin to see and understand what dilemmas these characters are going through. Blending all manner of theatrical genres, comedy, drama, pathos, fantasy, absurdism, Albee’s words just “dances off the page even right down to the stage directions,” said the director. “Just

reading the words on the page really proves how deserving it was of this Pulitzer.” After some trepidation, the conversation turns into a very fascinating, existential discussion of the meaning of life itself, and change, said Aubin. “It’s one of those things where you speak the same language but you come from completely different cultures. There is a strong element of culture shock, because although the lizards speak perfect English, they can’t grasp (human) concepts. It’s the same for the humans themselves. It’s very metaphoric.” Seascapes runs July 30, 31, August 1 and 2, at 7pm. The show is free of charge, but the company will be passing the hat. Donations will be greatly appreciated. Weather permitting the play, which is set on a sand dune, will take place on the hill beside the band shell; otherwise it will be held under-cover in the band shell. OPINION

City hall opened up a can of worms on this one Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

These guys might need a lesson in tact. Our friends in the city’s bylaw department stepped in it last week, when they dropped off an inspection notice at a Cornwall home advising the owners that they could no longer keep signs on their property advertising a worm business. A neighbour had complained to city hall, suggesting signs advertising the sale of worms (by children no less) contravene a municipal bylaw prohibiting commercial sales on a residential property. Sigh…have city officials forgotten that big fat rink debacle last Christmas? That was the one where the Vincent family erected a sweet-looking rink on their Monaco Crescent front lawn that just happened to impinge on the municipal right of way. The story blew up into a national rallying cry for the preservation of the great Canadian game. Here we are, six months later, and the city’s bylaw department is stirring the pot once again – with the help of an angry neighbour who complained. Last winter I suggested the city, grudgingly, made the right decision in requiring the rink boards be removed from the Vincent family rink. But has the city not learned a little bit about how to deal with something as innocent as mom and apple pie…like little kids selling worms in the dog days of summer? Of course the city is within its rights to send the family a notice suggesting if the signs aren’t removed fines of $240 a day will be on their way. The signs are breaking the rules… and if I file a complaint at city hall, I sure as hell expect it to

be addressed promptly and professionally. In this case there was a sign on the front lawn, and apparently another one on the house, advertising the sale of worms. The children could often be found digging up the wriggling little rascals and selling them later for a small profit. No one is suggesting the kids can’t sell their worms, but putting the signs out was enough to see a complaint filed at city hall. Where I think this thing falls off the rails is not the fact that city hall responded (it had to), but how it addressed the issue, and the timing of the response. Dropping off a letter late on a Friday afternoon, without so much as a phone call, can be perceived as being heavy-handed. It sure looks that way to me. Perhaps it would have been better to meet with the family, or give them a call, and advise them of the rules and that a complaint had been filed. If that avenue had not worked, then I suppose sending written correspondence is the next step. But city officials confirmed Tuesday that the protocol is to file a written notice of inspection following a complaint. So, by the book, that’s what was done. What happens next? Just your garden-variety social media poop storm where the city gets tarred and feathered…again. This time I think the city needs to be told its protocols lacks some serious bedside manner. Just because you’re breaking the rules, or in this case the law, doesn’t necessarily mean you deserve a letter with threats of massive fines. Is it too much to document the complaint internally, and have a bylaw officer advise the offenders by way of a phone call or a home visit

to explain the situation, without the pomp and circumstance of sending a written warning? I know there are cops, all the time, that pass by children playing street hockey out in front of their homes. Streets are not meant for hockey games, but you never hear of cops issuing tickets for such an infraction. Most of the time an officer will simply have a chat with the players and the game will be moved to a park…case closed. The same thing happens, on occasion, when you get pulled over for rolling through a stop sign, going 10 km/h over the speed limit or jaywalking in the big city. It’s called discretion, and I think the city missed the boat on this one. Not because the bylaw people broke their own rules, but because they followed them. Let’s face it, the city had to know there was the potential to open a big old can of worms (see what I did there?) on this one…what’s more

innocent than kids selling worms? This thing is a PR nightmare. But to have protocols in place that immediately required written warnings to be filed (in this case at 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon) only paints the city in a bad light. Those rules need to be changed, because we now have two cases where the city’s bylaw department has been called out for being too over-the-top. The rules are in place for a reason and I support them. But operating in a vacuum, robotically following protocols for addressing complaints with offenders, needs to change. You can bet the next time bylaw officers file a written warning, the offenders are going to scream bloody murder too, in hopes of garnering public sympathy. Maybe a courtesy call/meeting before the written notices go out will quell the issue before it takes on a life of its own...again.

at 13th St.) as I came to a stop just behind the sidewalk. At that precise moment, a young lady approx. 16 swished directly in front of me using the sidewalk for her bicycle transport. In one of her hands were two ice caps on a tray while her second hand had fortunately kept her bike

letters Editor: Every year from time to time, we hear or read about traffic warnings. They can be about snowmobiles or all terrains in winter and in summer, about motorcycles, bicycles or skateboards....in all cases, it’s the rider who is at risk. Let’s say the

average vehicle weight is approx. 3,000 to 5,000 pounds (okay x 2.2 for kg.). Add to that the speed of said vehicle coming towards you. What do you get? Well, you get anything from messy bug on your window or a body bouncing off your grill. I was driving down Lisieux St. (St. Theresa’s Church

grease the wheels. No surprise that Calgary Southwest leads the pack with $444,373. The riding is represented by Stephen Harper. Four other ridings ahead of SD and SG are represented by cabinet ministers. Another is represented by Green Party leader Elizabeth May ($235,940) . And the riding served by Finance Minister Joe Oliver is only $2,000 up on the local riding association. That’s hanging out with some pretty hefty company. The other local contenders, Liberal and New Democratic Party riding associations, can only look on with envy. Their campaign war chests are much smaller. A longer campaign will put a strain on their thinner financial resources. As the AC/DC rockers scream, “Money talks, yeah, yeah”. A MOMENT IN THE CONFESSIONAL I’m not sure how the statute of limitations works with such things, but in wake of wormgate I can’t live with the guilt any longer, so I’m fessing up: As a kid I wasn’t into the worm-selling racket, but at age nine or 10, in cahoots with a couple of other enterprising neighbourhood urchins, I operated a lemonade/Kool-Aid stand biz on the front lawn without a permit from the city. If what the AC/DC rockers sing about in “Money Talks” is true, the Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry Conservative Party Association will be “talking” up a storm in the days leading up to the Oct. 19 federal election. Not only is their candidate backed by a seasoned campaign machine that crushed the opposition in 2011, but money will be no object this time around, not that it was in short supply last time. The local association is, as the saying goes, flush with cash. In fact, the association has much more cash than it will be allowed under the rules of engagement to spend on incumbent Guy Lauzon’s re-election campaign, once the PM nails the writ to the starting gate. Some think the writ dropping exercise could come as earlier as mid-August, which will give well-funded riding associations, mostly of the Conservative persuasion, more spending room. Lauzon is backed by one of the best-funded riding associations in the country. Only eight other associations - be it Conservative, Liberal, NDP or Green - have more money in their war chests. The local Conservative riding association has $212,261 (if you want to be picky, it is actually $212,261 and 52 cents), which puts them in the upper half of the top 20 in the country. It shows how the local federal political landscape has shifted over the years. A couple of decades ago the Conservative association ran second to the Red machine in harvesting campaign dollars. Fishing/hunting club hopes to secure grants for conservation work Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The first female president of the South Lancaster Fish and Game Club wants to make sure local natural resources can be protected for future use. Shawna Rousseau said the club will begin exploring avenues for government grants, including sources like the Trillium Foundation, in an effort to access funds that will be used to protect wildlife areas, including fish spawning grounds. Rousseau said the logic is simple. “If we don’t make efforts to conserve what we’re hunting and fishing...the resource will only last so long,” she said. “Conservation is integral to hunting and fishing.” First on her list of priorities is getting an update on the condition of walleye spawning grounds in Hoople Creek (Ingleside) and an area around the Martintown Mill. She said the spawning grounds have been in place since the 1980s when her club took an active role in their construction. “Our long-term goal is to secure grants in 2016,” said Rousseau. “We need an assessment of these spwaning grounds to see if they’re still a viable resource.” What also comes along with that is partnering more with Raisin Region and South Nation

Coyotes claim silver The U14 Coyote Boys brought home silver medals from Gatineau in the Coupe de Soccer Outaouais Tournament. They won their first game 2-0 against LRSO Arsenal, second game 4-0 against the LRSO Vikings and third game 4-0 against LRSO Express. The boys had a long six-hour wait in 40 degree humidex weather, heading for gold or silver. They lost against the Road Runners 2-1 in the final. Shawna Rousseau, president of the South Lancaster Fish and Game Club, shows off a seven-pound walleye she caught. conservation authorities. Despite its name the South Lancaster club is open to all local residents, and splits its activities pretty evenly between hunting and fishing. The club is hosting a walleye tournament Aug. 22 on Lake St. Francis. First prize in the tourney will be $1,350.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Next weekend dozens of golfers will gather at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club for the crown jewel in its annual crown - the Cornwall Open. The 59th edition of the popular summertime tournament takes place Aug 1 to 3, with a mix of all classes, including pros and A-class competitors on the final day of the event. Moe Bellefeuille, club pro at Cornwall, said officials are looking forward to 59, but next year’s 60th anniversary will be even more special. “We’re really gearing up for the 60th,” he said. “We really want the 60th to be a good one. So we’re making sure this year is good too.” No kidding. This year’s event is being televised on TV

Cogeco, and is completely open to the public. “We’re putting in a grandstand on the ninth hole, at the green,” said Bellefeuille. “People can sit and watch the pros come up nine.” Ray Champagne, the club captain at Cornwall, said the tournament will also offer a chance for top-notch local golfers to rub shoulders with the professionals from out of town. “It’s a lot like a pro-am,” he said. “Two pros will go out with one of our better amateurs.” Some of the professionals on the circuit stopping in Cornwall this year will be Graham Gunn, Hocan Olsson, Mac Boucher and Bob Flaro (former pro at the Cornwall club). The event begins Aug. 1 with B, C and senior classes. The mixed class will play Aug. 2, followed by the professionals a day later. Live entertainment will also take place on Aug. 2 at the club.

NEWS

The mode is the medium – and it matters Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com How you get there is much like Marshall McLuhan’s ‘the medium is the message’. The mode of travel itself can be more significant and memorable than the eventual destination. Let’s briefly explore the modes of travel, starting with the most basic, progressing toward the most technological. Walking: we were created to walk, we automatically come with what we need (two legs, ten toes), but it’s slow – and painful if done with bare feet. Then God created the canoe. He always intended us to go canoeing because I know that the canoe was invented long before Reeboks, Adidas and Nikes. Besides, some of those fancy

D.R. fencing

shoes cost more than a canoe, paddles and life jackets included. Horse: without a doubt, four legs are better than our two. Besides, when travelling, the equine-based view is strategically superior. Ever seen a horseless knight? Unfortunately, horses leave a pollution problem behind them. Humans tend not to travel via cow or pig, because what they leave in their wake is even worse. Bicycles must have been invented by God the Son, as unlike God the Father’s canoe, they are still useable for travel during our typical Canadian eleven months of winter freeze-up. Automobiles are special, very special. In the 30s and beyond, they were referred to as ‘horseless carriages’, but then it was discovered that they had potential for being ‘bedrooms on wheels.’ That tag was particularly appropriate

when the Nash Rambler’s special feature became available. It was the automobile that made suburbia possible. After that has come the ‘bedroom communities’. Thanks to cars and new four-lane highways, communities such as Russell, Winchester and Kemptville have burgeoned as places where those who work in Ottawa commute to and from five days a week. In the 30s, many workers walked to work, their lunch pail under their arm. Trains are being relegated to being things of the past in Canada. It’s virtually impossible to go from here to there by train in Canada. We have far more abandoned railway rights of way than active ones. Airplane (or ‘aeroplane’ if you prefer), as opposed to ‘a i rc ra f t ’ w h i c h is

any man-made flying machine, including hot air balloon, dirigible (commonly called ‘blimp’), gliders (aka ‘sailplanes’) helicopters, etc., all of which tend to operate out of aerodromes or airstrips (which people tend to call ‘airports’). If God intended us to fly, why is it that only the angels got wings? The wings that Douglas, Cessna, Bombardier and Boeing are far inferior to those of the angels, archangels and seraphim. For them, flying is easy, with lots of leg room and interesting places to visit. I’m not sure what the aerodynamic function of that gold disc that encircles their head is. Maybe once we humans get the gold discs, we’ll be able to fly too. By the way, 346 – and counting, and hoping for more. With life, how you travel will determine what’s at the end of ‘the trip’.

We carry all your roofing supplies.

YAC IS BACK: Arts council makes changes in wake of funding cut Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - After facing a few challenges, earlier this year, Your Arts Council Cornwall and the Counties (YAC) is back up on its feet and poised to move forward and grow. The organization was dealt a road block, earlier in the year, after the city had originally cut its budget to $12,000 – a fraction of what was requested, said Richard Salem, YAC facilitator. “We did have some original cuts to what we had asked for from the city,” he said, but after a petition was launched, city council reconsidered and fully funded them at $35,000. Salem explained that at the same time, YAC executive director, Bruce Davis, was beginning a personal four-month leave of absence, but it was still presumed that they would be able to match funds with grants, which paid for his salary. The program expired, and most of the alternative granting programs were closed, as

well. “We got caught without the matching funds we had hoped for, so the board deliberated and decided that with the funding from the city, we couldn’t maintain the position of executive director, said Salem. “We had to tell Bruce that we can’t bring him back; we just don’t have the budget for it.” The board decided to hire a contract administrator a part-time basis, which, for now is Salem, who calls himself a facilitator. “So we closed the position of executive director,” said Salem, who is in for the interim, to get things back up and running. “Eventually the board is looking to hire a part-time general manager.” In the meantime, the organization continues its work, including the addition of a third space within the Incubator Program, which offers affordable studio facilities for visual artists. As well, YAC now provides three galleries for

local artist to exhibit, including the third floor at YAC office, in the Aultsville Building; the Aultsville foyer gallery, which is in the process of expansion; and at the Grind Café. Cornwall Tourism is now on board as a circulating gallery. They will also be providing a partnership with the Apples and Arts Studio tour, in the fall. YAC will be at the International Plowing Match, in September, in partnership with Cornwall Tourism, providing performance opportunities for local acts. Other changes to the group include a new and improved website and the elimination of the annual membership fee. Visit www.yourartscouncil.ca, for further information or to register. The “Let’s Talk” community meeting sessions will reconvene, later in the fall. “The top most objective of this organization is that artists are successful; It’s that simple,” said Salem. “That’s our purpose; that’s what I’m continuing to do here.”

Summer writing camp delves into murder mysteries Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Children heading to this camp can be forgiven if they leave their tents and sleeping bags at home, instead opting for a notebook and a pen. The Teen Summer Writing Camp begins Aug. 4 in Cornwall. Sara Murphy, the organizer of the camp, said young people will be given a chance to explore

their creativity over four days at Limelight Music Academy and other venues in the city. “We do a lot of word games and exercises, to really get their vocabulary going,” she said. “It’s a perfect camp because it’s for kids who are not into sports, or dance and things like that.” This year the focus is on murder mysteries, and students will tour the former Cornwall Jail and the Cornwall Community Museum to view artifacts and get inspired.

“We also put together an anthology for the young writers as a keepsake of the camp experience,” said Murphy. “The kids who attend our camp are not ‘learning how to write.’ They are already very gifted writers in need of the opportunity to stretch their writing muscles outside of the classroom, meet other youth who also love to write and become inspired by seeing just how far they can go with their writing and creativity.”

Two local authors, Melissa YI, author of Terminally Ill and The Dragon and the Stars, as well as Jennifer DeBruin, author of A Walk with Mary and The Shadow in the Trees, will provide guest lectures to students as well. The camp has eight spots and is open to ages 12-17. Registration is $130. Email saramurphymedia@gmail.com or call 613-360-1627 for more information or to receive a registration package.

Many years ago, our governments requested the automobile manufacturers to design bumpers that could absorb a 5 mph hit. These companies honoured that request. But now, we see many pick-up trucks and SUV’s with trailerhitches sticking out of their back bumpers, some as much as one-foot long. Thus, a simple little 5 mph bump can tear-up a front bumper to shreds and even pierce your radiator. Why don’t these people store away those removable hitches when not in use?!

Here’s a few tips to help control the mosquito population in your back yard this summer: • Destroy or dispose of tin cans, old tires, buckets and similar water-holding containers. • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left outside and cover trash containers to keep out rainwater. • Clean clogged roof gutters on an annual basis. • Change water every week in birdbaths and wading pools. • Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. • Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps and arrange them so they drain properly. • Clean animal troughs weekly. • Irrigate lawns and gardens carefully to prevent water from standing for several days. Since mosquitoes are known to carry diseases such as the West Nile virus, canine heartworm and viral encephalitis, every preventative measure is important. With a little extra effort, summertime in the backyard can be an even more enjoyable experience.

The best bang for your car buck: Buy or lease? Cornwall Honda has the answer.

Sales manager Dan Gagne says the best way to get behind the wheel is leasing your vehicle. “Drivers get so much more value and options out of leasing,” said Gagne. “The average Canadian finances their vehicle for six to seven years, but trades on average in four to five. So do you really own your car?” Satisfied customer Allison Samson says she leases her Hondas for a variety of reasons. “I never have to worry about having an older vehicle that may break down and leave me stranded. I can’t afford for that to happen - I travel a lot,” said Samson. “I enjoy having a new vehicle every few years, and that’s made possible by Ryan Scott, Cornwall Honda New & Used Sales & Leasing Consultant. He always stays in touch, and optimizes my ‘trade-in time’ so I get great value. My family and I use this vehicle without worry with Honda’s lease guard. And the dogs love it, too.” Gagne says there has never been a better time to lease a Honda Civic. “Payments are the lowest we have seen, this car is the bestselling selling car in Canada for 17 years in a row and built here in Ontario. It’s like employee pricing without the marketing aspect of it,” he said. Lease the new Honda Civic with cutting-edge technology, such as rear backup camera, ECON mode, Bluetooth, heated seats and an automatic transmission for *$255.09/month, with $472.51 up front over 60 months at 0.99% or $117.76 bi-weekly, with $335.18 up front over 60 months @0.99%, taxes included, licensing extra. Your guaranteed residual value at lease-end would be $7940.00 plus HST. “A lot can change in five years. Even the law has changed, not all cars had Bluetooth and a rear backup camera five years ago, which is now mandatory,” said Gagne. “That is the nice thing about leasing, it accommodates your lifestyle throughout the years without compromising the risk of depreciation.” If there is an accident on your trade, legally it must be fully disclosed to the next buyer. This law affects the value of your trade. But with a lease, the co-owner takes all the risk in deprecia-

In case the answer wasn’t already clear, Cornwall Honda offered a few more reasons to lease: guaranteed future value; gap protection; joy of new car experience more often; lowest cost of ownership (maintenance); always under warranty; only pay taxes on the portion you use, taxes not paid up front and under lending rate; options instead of an obligation are return to prevent a loss, sell to make a profit or keep and complete the ownership; latest technologies and safety features; more car for less money; added accessories at a lower monthly cost; bankruptcy protection; adapting to your lifestyle needs; change of model, options, and color; protection against monetary loss due to an accident by opting to return the vehicle; and owing less on a lease than a purchase.
