Art gallery sued by former executive director for $250k Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The fired head of The Art Gallery - Cornwall is suing her former employers for $250,000. Sylvie Lizotte filed a statement of claim against the art gallery, known as TAG, earlier this year, seeking $100,000 for wrongful dismissal, $100,000 for mental distress and $50,000 in punitive and aggravated damages. Lizotte argues she was unlawfully terminated earlier this year by TAG, according to court records obtained by Seaway News, by way of

attacks upon her reputation which resulted in mental distress and were an attempt to get her to quit. TAG has filed its intent to defend against the claim, which names TAG board members Wyatt Walsh and Jamie Gilcig specifically and seeks $250,000 from them as well. In her claim Lizotte says she was summoned to TAG’s Pitt Street offices on Feb. 26, where she met Walsh for the first time and was provided with a letter outlining a suspension without pay for two weeks due to insubordination. At the time she was advised, according to the statement of claim, that if she did not resign

Former TAG executive director Sylvie Lizotte. “In my opinion there was a disconnect between the executive director and board members,” said Setnyk in January. “We had different visions for the art gallery.” But Setnyk wouldn’t go any further with his comments, because “litigation is a legitimate concern.” It was a running theme among many former members of the TAG board, who would not speak out concerning their time with the organization – many citing a fear they could be sued by Lizotte for speaking publicly on their relationship. Nothing alleged against TAG has been proven in court.

within the two weeks she would be fired. “The manner of the...dismissal for alleged cause, without basis and just a few short weeks after Gilcig and Walsh were appointed as TAG board members, and following upon a period of forced vacation and suspension without pay, was heavy-handed and malicious,” reads Lizotte’s statement of claim. In its defense TAG denies these allegations and suggests, among other things, Lizotte’s “reputation” with artists was “poor.” Lizotte was terminated effective March 11. Court records indicate Lizotte was paid an annual salary of $45,000. Lawyers for both TAG and Lizotte have not yet been reached for comment. At the time of her dismissal Walsh said he was completing an internal investigation into the inner workings of TAG. “This was a cut and dry situation,” Walsh said in an interview at the time. “We did our due prudence.” Lizotte had been employed by the art gallery for 20 years, but had begun to run afoul of board members, past and present. Differing visions and a “disconnect” between the board governing TAG and its executive director led to an exodus of individuals at the beginning of 2015. While many former members of the TAG board whom Seaway News spoke with at the time declined to address the issue with specifics, former board member Jason Setnyk lifted the veil of secrecy slightly in comments to this newspaper.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A conflict of interest case filed against the mayor and two city councillors has been dismissed by a judge. Jamie Gilcig had his case against Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy and councillors Elaine MacDonald and Carilyne Hebert shelved. The judge also decreed 100 per cent of the defendants’ legal costs, believed to be some $7,400, will have to be paid by Gilcig. Gilcig filed what proved to be a meritless lawsuit against the elected officials over comments they made during a city council debate concerning the creation of a university in Cornwall. All three council members also sit as members of the committee studying the feasibility of the university in Cornwall. The judge was having nothing to do with suggestions that the council members were in a conflict. “There was no conflict, direct or indirect,” said O’Shaughnessy following the judge’s ruling in a Cornwall courtroom Friday. “The case was dismissed based on the fact that there was no merit whatsoever.” O’Shaughnessy said he was confident heading into Friday’s court session, but added: “There’s always this cloud that hangs over you.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – With two years in the rear-view mirror, the Cornwall Area Mustang Club is showing no signs of slowing. Seventy-six ‘Stang’s – spanning the Ford automobile’s 51-year history – lined the parking lot at the club’s anniversary event on July 4. “It all started because of the cars, but it grew into a social gathering,” said CAMC president Guy Lemay. “It’s not a guy’s club, it’s a family club.” CAMC meet on Saturdays at the Home Hardware in Cornwall (at the corner of 13th & Pitt streets), from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., to discuss life in the fast lane and share updates on their vintage and tricked-out Mustangs, before taking a cruise to a nearby restaurant for coffee or ice cream. Claude Turcotte and his wife Ginette make the

weekly drive from Montreal for two reasons: “the love of Mustangs and friendly people.” To explain why he’s a loyal fan of the Ford automobile, Claude roared the engine of his 2007 Mustang GT Convertible. “It’s the way it sounds when you start it that keeps me in the driver’s seat,” he said. The Turcottes agreed the club’s welcoming atmosphere is a huge draw. “Everybody speaks to everybody. There’s no cliques,” said Ginette. A few rows over, CAMC member Jody Archambault showed off the new custom-built 347 engine in his reef blue ‘93 Mustang Nothchback. As spectators admired the shiny chrome, he promoted the third annual Kinsmen in Motion:

Show & Shine at Lamoureux Park on August 23. “We encourage all car, truck and motorcycle enthusiasts to register ($10 fee) to help support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall-SDG,” said Archambault. According to attendees, the anniversary gathering ran much smoother than last year.

Lemay credited the CMAC’s newly formed event committee for organizing entertainment, food and beverages, and parking, amongst other logistics. “We have about 110 members (65 cars) and we’re still growing,” he said. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ cornwallmustangs.

TOLL HIKE: Bridge corporation announces increase to $3.50 CORNWALL, Ontario - Just before the Canada Day celebration the Federal Bridge Corporation quietly announced a hike to the cost of making the crossing at Cornwall. As of Aug. 1 it will cost $3.50 instead of $3.25 for cars, while similar adjustments will be made

for larger vehicles. A press release detailing the hikes was issues at around 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Seaway International Bridge Corp. (SIBC) is crying hard times, suggesting it has done all it can when it comes to saving operating costs when it comes to maintenance, overall salaries and admin costs. The toll increase is the first in 10 years.

“This increase will generate new revenues as over the next 15 years, SIBC will need to sustain its operations and fund significant projects such as bridge painting, maintenance and repair works and the future deck replacement of the South Channel Bridge,” the agency said in its press release. SIBC recently completed the construction of a low-level bridge in Cornwall and work is being

done to demolish the previous structure. In 2015-16 total toll revenues collected at SIBC were $3.3 million. There has been an ongoing decrease as truck revenues have gone down by 50 per cent over the last decade. “This reduction is mainly caused by the closing of the Domtar, General Motors and Alcoa plants as well as the opening of the Montreal Highway 30 bypass,” said SIBC.

No more visiting-hour restrictions at Cornwall hospital Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - If you have a loved one under the care of the Cornwall Community Hospital feel free to visit with them as long as you like. The hospital announced, effective July 1, there will no longer be restrictions on visiting hours. A new open door policy, allowing visiting at any time, to the patient’s preference, is now in place. The Cornwall hospital is joining a number of other facilities in Ontario and around the world with such relaxed policies concerning visiting patients. “The open-door approach is one element of a larger move toward putting patients and their families at the centre of the hospital culture and improving the

patient experience,” the hospital said in a statement. “CCH is following this trend by allowing the patient to determine or express their visiting preferences.” There is one caveat. Between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. visitors are asked to enter through the emergency department door, ensuring that security is not compromised. The policy advises visitors to stay away if they are feeling unwell, and also gives staff members the authority to ask a visitor to quiet down or leave if being disruptive. “Time spent at the hospital can be a difficult time, and allowing relatives and friends to visit anytime can alleviate the stress,” the hospital’s statement continued. “Visitors can also provide assistance to their loved ones and observe care so that they can meet patient needs when they return home.” Check out some of the reasons why Nissan is

Farmers and agriculture specialists agree that so far the biggest impact of the wet start to summer has been trying to make hay...while the sun shines (pun fully intended). “I’d say we’re about a week or 10 days behind on hay,” said Tom McDonald, a dairy farmer in South Glengarry who also produces

corn and soy beans. Hay is often cut in the field, and then allowed to sit in the sun and dry before being bailed. But when it rains as much as it had in June and even last week, the hay wasn’t drying at all. “I just dumped out the rain gauge - we had 10mm in 24 hours,” continued McDonald, referring to the wet Canada Day that plagued the area. McDonald said his crops are generally weathering well against the rain, and he suggested that is likely a trend one could see across the immediate region - provided farm-

Earaches were a common occurrence for Jody ever since she started day care 2 years ago. The routine was usually the same: runny nose, a slight fever, then she’d get fussy for 1-2 days, then a full blown earache, which inevitably resulted in a visit to the doctor, and antibiotics. Twice, three times, four times, she was not being cured and Jody’s parents, like all parents, were concerned about the frequent antibiotics. When the sniffles started again, they brought Jody to see me. She started on the remedy Ferrum Phosphoricum; two days later the sniffles were gone. Jody never got to the fever stage, or the fussy stage or the earache stage. Jody has had the occasional runny nose but that was resolved with Ferrum Phos., but she has been earache free for two years now. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease, so two people with the same problem may require different remedies.

ers got their weed spraying finished on time. The wet weather means fields are likely “a little soft” right now, and getting weed-spraying equipment out to do it job could be tough, said McDonald. Scott Banks, a crop specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Food and Rural Affairs, said in an interview the region along the St. Lawrence River has been grappling with the flood of rain since May when things were actually pretty dry. “Generally for that area you’ve seen a fair bit of rain - above average rain,” he said. Banks agreed the big impact of the wet

conditions has been on hay production, and that other crops are holding their own. How things will proceed into the future remains anyone’s guess. Banks pointed to a short-term forecast, for the local area, that suggests warm dry weather will dominate. But, long-term forecasts suggest otherwise. CBC reported recently that Environment Canada is forecasting a dull summer for the Cornwall area, with Dave Phillips, Environment Canada’s senior climatologist, saying temperatures will be below average into July, with above average precipitation, too.

Cornwall mom, whose son was abused, wants more regulation for PSWs Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall mother of a man who was abused while in long-term care wants more regulation for personal support workers who look after her son and others - including seniors - on a daily basis. Joy Seguin said her son Andre, who has autism and developmental delays, was abused 10 years ago while under the care of personal support workers, also known as PSWs. Criminal charges were filed and a conviction was entered in the case involving Seguin’s son - but the guilty party has since had their record expunged. Her son has been properly cared for since, for the most part, but Seguin is advocating that more regulation is required for PSWs in Ontario, including a registry for those convicted of abusing clients. “There is a need to raise the standards – absolutely,” she said in an interview. “The PSWs…there’s a lot phenomenal people. But we need more people doing the right thing. “If there’s abuse or neglect most doctors and nurses are covered by a college. And incidents are reported on a registry. With PSWs that is not the case. Any incidents of abuse or neglect are not (listed).”

- with hundreds more likely going unreported. A 2006 report to the Ministry of Health advocates against regulating PSWs, in part because there was no professional association representing the workers at the time. Since then the Ontario Personal Support Worker Association (OPSWA) has created a standards of practice for everything from Alzheimer care, to shaving and tube feeding. Association president Miranda Ferrier saidher group would welcome more regulation for PSWs. “I would have no problem putting the names of people (who have commited abuse) on our website for all to see,” she said, adding the OPSWA wants to be the governing body for regulating PSWs. But the province is arguing it is a conflict of interest to have PSWs policing PSWs. No way, said Ferrier. “Look at the nurses and the doctors,” she added, pointing to colleges of nurses and doctors that rule upon infractions commited by their members. Seguin takes it a step further, and suggests more training be provided to PSWs, and more money from the province offered to fund long-term care facilities that often go with bare-bones staff which can lead to a backlog of clients looking for help to roll over in bed, go to the washroom or eat. “We’ve got to help these front-line workers…

Her petition can be found online at jimmcdonellmpp.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/PSWpetition.pdf, and it is being circulated throughout the community. Because of that, Seguin argues too many employers may not know they have retained an individual with a track record of abusing clients. So, she has begun circulating a petition, calling on the provincial government to do more to regulate PSWs. She has more than 400 signatures so far. “People must start speaking up. People have to make some noise,” said Seguin. Changes in the law implemented to prevent things like elder abuse mandate that anyone who sees or knows of abuse must report it. A person who knows of ongoing abuse and does not report it can face the loss of their own job or other consequences. But there is still no requirement that PSWs must have a criminal background check completed when applying for work, though many employers request such information - including colleges that offer PSW schooling. Seguin said her son’s abuser, and others who have been convicted, can slip through the cracks. “They got their hand sort of slapped. Their record was expunged, and no one was the wiser,” she said. Nearly 80,000 Ontarians live in long-term care homes. CTV News reported last year that in southern Ontario alone there were 1,500 abuse cases reported between July 2010 and December 2013

ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS OF ENBRIDGE GAS DISTRIBUTION INC.

Many thanks

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. has applied for pre-approval of the cost consequences associated with a long-term natural gas transportation contract with NEXUS Gas Transmission. Learn more. Have your say. Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board for pre-approval of the cost consequences associated with a 15-year gas transportation contract commencing on November 1, 2017. The total cost for NEXUS capacity over the term of the contract is approximately $421.6 million (US). If its application is approved, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. says that the benefits will include: • enhancing its gas supply plan through improved reliability, diversity, and flexibility • supporting the development of new natural gas pipeline infrastructure • allowing direct access to new sources of natural gas supply in the Appalachian Basin

The MS Society of Canada recently thanked organizers of the We 3 Girls & Co. Trunk Sale and Pamper Me Party which takes place annually to benefit the agency. Karen Torrie-Racine, standing in the centre, presents a plaque and other goodies to, standing from left, Tony Lacroix and Nancy Sylvester, and seated from left, Julie D’Alessio Hickman and Debbie Burns.

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. says that its forecast cost of gas supply via the NEXUS pipeline is competitive with alternative pipeline projects or existing pipeline infrastructure that accesses the Dawn Hub. THE ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD IS HOLDING A PUBLIC HEARING The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) will hold a public hearing to consider the application filed by Enbridge Gas. We will question Enbridge Gas on the case. We will also hear arguments from individuals and from groups that represent the customers of Enbridge Gas. At the end of this hearing, the OEB will decide whether or not to pre-approve the costs as requested in the application.

River Institute open house, a new chapter and a flood of memories ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – The perks of being a teenage scientist are piling up for Williamstown’s Kate Schwartz. Researching waterlife on boating expeditions, exploring cavernous heights for webwinged mammals, and being mentored by some of the region’s leading marine biologists are just a few on the list. At the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences annual open house on Saturday (July 4), the 17-year-old outdoor researcher became the youngest recipient of a coveted accolade for local environmentalists: the River Award. “It’s such an honour,” said Schwartz. The recent graduate of Char-Lan Secondary School first worked with the institute as a summer intern when she was 15. In summer 2014, she moved up to assistant field

technician. Schwartz said her responsibilities included researching the local population growth of cutlip minnows and turtles and tracking bats with scientist Dr. Brian Hickey. After completing a few more high school credits, the next step is attending university to study fresh water biology. “Without the River Institute, I probably wouldn’t have pursued my interests, because kids think that you’re nerdy if you like bugs,” said Schwartz. “I have so many role models here that are extremely encouraging. It’s a really great facility.” To mark the institute’s 20-plus years of service, 115 RikThorncliffe Saaltink,Park board Jeff 67094 Drive chair, and Dr. Docket: Toronto Ontario Client: 247 - Mazda Ridal,M4H executive director, unveiled a com1M1 Job Name: July Ontario News memorative plaque at the open house with Tel 416•696•2853 Production Contact: Lara Vanderheide several founding members, including John St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences executive director Dr. Jeff Ridal Milnes, Flip Flockton and Sandra S. LEASE FROM

OPINION

Bike lanes, Frost warnings and some news from the courts Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Some random thoughts as we head into the dog daze of summer.

New bike lanes

Actually, he never left. You will remember he filed a resignation last month after reports that he was facing criminal charges in Quebec. The emailed resignation landed in the laps of local media but the documentation has conveniently been AWOL at the city clerk’s office. Frost had a change of heart milliseconds after he pushed the send button. He had no comment for a couple of us who tried to speak with him at the June 22 city council meeting. We only had about two dozen questions concerning his status as a councillor, criminal charges in Quebec and his favourite colour (my bet is blue, for the record). Word around the city council campfire (from a few councillors) is that after months of relative silence from Frost, he has recently begun emailing and texting his colleagues like crazy to make it painfully clear he is on the job for the citizens of Cornwall…while living and working in Ottawa. The AMO conference this summer? He’ll be there. What about getting to work on the council code of conduct? Frost has jumped in with both feet. Getting ready to resign? Cue the cricket sound effects…

My Twitter buddy @moleinthewall will be pleased to know I have seen a veritable traffic jam of bicycles on those new Second Street lanes…not. She (I think it’s a she) has taken me to task for coming down against the bike lanes – which is fine. I welcome the criticism. But I have to say; adding those lanes still hasn’t led to streams of cyclists heading back and forth on Second Street East. I drive that stretch of road every day, and cars/trucks still outnumber bicycles 10:1. What has increased is the fury and vehemence from motorists who are stuck in massive lineups, especially when those businesses in the industrial park go through a shift change. The city is supposed to be tracking the number of cyclists using the lanes and report those numbers back to city hall. I wonder if they are counting on one hand, or two? My wife and I did spot some cycling traffic last week: a pair of jokers going the wrong way, weaving back and forth over the painted line that is supposed to separate motorized vehicles Art gallery lawsuit from the pedal-pushers. Not unlike the calm before the storm, you Mark my words, someone is going to get knew this had to be coming. Former art gallery clipped one of these days. executive director Sylvie Lizotte is suing her old Frost warning bosses at TAG. Brock Frost is back – like it, or lump it. She filed a whopper of a wrong dismissal suit Ottawa’s newest real estate broker (he just got against the gallery in April. Lizotte is seeking his paperwork), who just happens to dabble as $250,000 from the gallery for a host of issues, a councillor from time to time, appears headed including being terminated without cause, mennowhere but back to city hall. tal anguish and so on.

She’s also tacked on another $250,000 for a pair of board members. I’m sure the art gallery has insurance in the event a court sides with Lizotte. But does it have that much? The lawsuit, if it ever gets to trial, will no doubt be ugly. I am told by former art gallery board members that Lizotte was not afraid to flex some muscle (through her lawyer on occasion) if she felt slighted…even a little bit. The board is likewise prepared to defend the accusations Lizotte has levelled – none of which have been proven. Stay tuned to this one.

And speaking of court cases… Are the courts getting wise? Kinda looks that way. Last week Justice Rick Leroy, who was nearly appointed to hero status in some circles, dismissed a meritless lawsuit filed in court against Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy and city councillors Carilyne Hebert and Elaine MacDonald.

The suit claimed that the mayor and councillors were somehow (perhaps on planet Neptune) in a conflict of interest because they had voted to support the work done by a local committee studying the feasibility of establishing a university in Cornwall. You see, the mayor and councillors also sit on the committee. It happens, especially in small cities like ours where people often wear different hats…not unlike screenwriters, activists and media moguls (or people who think they are). The judge, though, was having none of it. He preached against the idea of frivolous lawsuits and suggested people interested in filing such claims had best do their homework before they waste everyone’s time. What a breath of fresh air. And the best part? The defendants aren’t paying the $7,400 it cost to defend the thinlycontrived legal claim. Those costs have been assigned to the complainant…wish I could remember his name.

It’s time for some real strategic planning From sitting back and watching our city council for the past seven months, I’m left with the impression of a kitten that’s caught its first mouse and doesn’t really know what to do with it. They seem directionless – distracted by the latest shiny object, but with no clear vision of

how to get to the future. Seven months is a long time in a 48-month mandate and, by now, you’d think they’d have gelled as a team with some purpose. Instead they’re banging away on transparency and accountability when, in reality, voters will judge that for them in another three years. It’s perhaps a testament to the emptiness of

the exercise that the one leading the charge on a code of ethics appears to be somewhat ethically challenged himself, at least from accounts so far. In fairness, provincial rules are not kind to city councils, especially councils with a fair proportion of new recruits. The fall election date leads immediately into budget deliberations before they’ve even managed to figure out who sits where. Most have never had to handle a budget much bigger than the average household, let alone that of a huge and complex corporation. So, it’s hard to find time amidst the onslaught of numbers and issues to really understand each other and develop the cooperative skills they need to function as a team. If I were to ask each of them to list the four or five most important things they need to accomplish in the remaining three years to move this city forward, I’m afraid the responses would be all over the map. Pulling the city in eleven different directions according to their individual visions isn’t going to work. They need to work collectively towards something that delivers lasting benefits for the city as a whole, not something that tops today’s

popularity ratings or merely satisfies somebody’s bag of election promises. It’s time for some strategic planning – time to come together and firm up those four or five most important things. But before they can get their minds around that exercise, they need to develop some teamwork. Right now, they don’t look like a team that could deliver a good cup of coffee let alone a cultural centre, a university or even reduced taxes. There are many unique skills around the table as well as a variety of backgrounds and experience. But those alone aren’t enough. They need to learn how to gain the most from each other to capitalize on them in order to move forward. I understand they’ll all attend the Association of Municipalities of Ontario annual meeting in Niagara Falls later this summer. That may be good news. Rubbing shoulders with councillors from across the province and learning about some of the larger issues facing municipalities might help to focus their minds somewhat. At least, I surely hope so. Because at the current rate, they’re not headed anywhere anytime soon. And that’s the way I see it.

OPINION

Some stories from the newsroom Claude mcIntosh

of matches, while Kennedy’s charged an extra penny. Ab never knew it but for a penny I wasn’t going two blocks out of my way. I always paid the penny. * I still have my first Canadian Press cheque for passing along a local story to the national news agency - $1.75. * You could fill a book on the escapades of a colourful sports editor called Ray Shank. His unofficial office was the draft room of the Lloyd George Hotel, just across the street, where he presided over the shuffle board league. Nobody could write a better account of a hockey game (or any sporting event for that matter) without seeing it. One holiday weekend Ray said he needed a staff car to cover a softball tournament in Massena. Instead, he filled up at Halliwell’s, where the S-F had an account. He also filled up three 20-gallon gas cans and took off for North Bay, to rendezvous with friends. For six months he lived at the office, literally, after being evicted from his apartment. He put a mattress in the big newsroom clothes closet. He bragged that he had the best apartment in town - free phone, free heat, free lights and four washrooms. He used the press room showers. This lasted, without management knowing, until he slept in one morning (he was first in) after being overserved at the Lloyd George. The female managing editor rolled back the closet door to hang up her coat only to find Shank stretched out on the floor and “dead” to the world. Thinking he really was dead, she let out a scream heard throughout the building and nearly fainted. HERE AND THERE The federal riding that includes Cornwall hasn’t had a cabinet minister since Ed Lumley. However, a strong, stiff Liberal wind blowing across the riding (StormontDundas-South Glengarry) in the fall election

could open the door. Justin Trudeau said women would make up at least 50% of his cabinet. If he becomes the next prime minister and Bernadette Clement wins the riding, she will be a cabinet contender. TRIVIA ANSWER The YMCA moved from First Street West (just west of Pitt Street) to its new building on Fifth Street East in 1962. The hall used by the First Street building was a former army hut from the Second World War basic training centre behind the Cornwall Armoury. TRIVIA This former pro baseball player was Cornwall’s first parks and recreation director. SOCIAL NOTES Summer brings visitors from far away back to the home town. Brian “The Cat” Rouleau is in from New Orleans (30 hour drive). Says he is working on a book about his 40-plus years in the night club biz. It’ll be called “Stuck in Stupid”. ... Scott Marlin came up from Ohio for a couple of days. ... Former MP/ mayor Bob Kilger and Courtney May tied the knot on June 27 in Ottawa. She is Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson’s executive assistant. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Back in the 1950s one of the service clubs ran a boys’ summer camp near Lancaster. It was called the Fresh Air Camp and was a free camp for underprivileged kids in the city. Eugene Bergeron recalls being one of the young campers transported to the camp down old Highway 2 in everything from pick-up trucks to a dump truck..... Rustic Camp Kagama on Sheek Island, a summer paradise. It was displaced by the St. Lawrence Seaway Project and rebuilt on Morrison Island. SPORTS STUFF King George Park ball diamond doesn’t look the same without the club house just outside the right-field fence. It is like Fenway Park without the Green Monster. ... Looking like a sore thumb is the portable john just behond the centre field fence. Quite a hike for from the bleachers.

Time to time I’m told that I should write a book. If I did (hey, enough trouble writing a weekly column), it would be about life in the news lane. So, excerpts from a book that will never be written. * When somebody tells me about being paid double time (or more) for working a stat holiday, I think of a battle years ago I had with a managing editor over pay for stat holidays. The guy insisted that the Ontario Labour Act didn’t allow the company to pay non-union staffers double time, the same as S-F union employees. (He also believed that the time and half had to be taken in time, not money, because the company didn’t put money for overtime in the budget). This, he wrongly believed, was because the act said persons working stat holidays had to be paid time and half. His interpretation was that this was the maximum amount to be paid. This was the same guy who sent out a memo reprimanding reporters for doing too much research on stories and scolded a talented up-and-comer that he didn’t want to see any more references to “white stuff” in his winter snow storm stories because “white stuff” was a slang for cocaine. (I’m not making this up). * And then there was the idiotic bell installed in the newsroom by wacky publisher John A. Farrington who was convinced we were ignoring incoming telephone calls (this was before voice mail). So, he had Bell Telephone install the contraption in the newsroom. It gave off a high pitched ring similar to a school bell when a call came through to the newsroom. In those days, a lot of people actually called the newsroom, so there was a lot of bell ringing, up to 20 an hour. If you were talking to someone on the phone, they would ask, “What is that?” My line was that

it meant somebody just escaped and any minute they would hear the guard dogs springing into action. The first thing Milton Ellis did when he returned as publisher (replacing the ousted Farrington) was to get rid of the bell. A cheer went up in the newsroom. * A publisher circa 1970s made it a rule that all the mail that came into the building had to be piled on his desk each morning. He would spend an hour or so opening every piece of mail, regardless of who it was addressed to. And that included mail marked personal. Each Christmas I would get a card from one of the beer reps. Opened of course. The year after the publisher was transferred I received the usual card from the rep, but this time with a gift certificate for a case of 24 beer. A few weeks later I was told by the rep that he had always put a gift certificate in with the card. And all that time I thought the publisher wasn’t a beer drinker. * The Windsor Star newsroom had two steel trash bins about the size of a casket. One evening while everybody was trying to beat deadline an annoying little guy kept pestering the labour reporter, a Greek with a fiery temper, about having too much work to do. Suddenly, the burly labour reporter grabbed the little guy, about half his size, by the back of the neck, threw open one of the bins, tossed him in, and put a chair on the lid. I can still hear the pest kicking the lid and yelling “Let me out, I’ve got a story to write.” * Managing editor Ab Gratton, a talented journalist who could write headlines on a scrap of paper while carrying on a conversation, would summon me to his office each morning. He would ask me to pick up a pack of cigarettes on my way to the police station (morning beat check) but to make a detour to the Cornwallis Hotel cafe rather than stopping at Kennedy’s next to the station. That was because a pack of smokes at the Cornwallis came with a free book

ENTERTAINMENT & RESTAURANTS

Two bands, but one frame of mind for Trench Town Oddities, Winston Marley Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - There is a palpable kinship between a close-knit group of local musicians, in two different bands, that has, for years, blurred the lines of membership. That tradition now continues with a recent collaborative recording. “The camaraderie is special,” said Sean Harley, frontman for Trench Town Oddities (with Steve Restinetti, Shane Levac, Jessy James Brown and Randy Lalonde), one of two bands on Bonk!, a six-song EP, released earlier this summer. “We’re almost like one band; we hang out all the time,” said Harley about his group and the guys in Winston Marley (Joel Plamondon, Marc Brault, Ron Piquette and Steve Restinetti), who not only share billing on the new “album,” but a guitarist, as well. We’re all interchangeable,” said Plamondon, who explained that it all began a decade ago with a group called The Dub Dogs. Eventually they would split in to two bands – some coming, some going - however continued to play together, socially and professionally. As a marker of sort, they all decided to put together a collection of songs, each contribut-

ing two originals, and a cover of the other’s. Assembled in bits and pieces, over a period of time, individually and collectively, the project is very raw, said Harley. “It’s very much what we’re all about; a real co-op; a close knit community of musicians. It’s really nice.” With two distinctive sounds, Winston Marley, an “up-tempo, fun, party band” with Ska and Reggae influences, and Trench Town Oddities, self-described folk-rockers, there is no mistaking their common passion for music. “We’re all at the same level musically,” said newly-wed, Plamondon, who explained that although he and his band take their music very seriously, they are not planning on taking it on the road, whereas Harley and his boys are ready to go wherever it will take them. With a couple of close calls to some major gigs, and no doubt more great things to come, Trench Town Oddities, puts a lot of mileage on their passports, playing every weekend in the States. Upcoming, locally, they will be rocking the stage at Ribfest. “Obviously we’d all like to make a living out of playing music,” said Harley about his aspirations. “It’s been an interesting ride for us, we’ve had

GOLF

Golf putt Perfect putting posture One of the quickest ways to improve your putting game is to improve your posture. Jack Nicklaus was the first great golfer who made it popular to put your eyes directly over the ball when you are putting. This is very hard to do for many golfers so it has been suggested that a small mirror can be placed on the green and your golf ball can then be placed right on top of the mirror. Eyes over the ball - To see if your eyes are indeed over the ball, make sure and stand in such a way that you can actually see your own eyes in the mirror. If you can’t see your own eyes, then you

need to adjust your posture. A simpler method might be to let your putter hang from between your eyes and then make sure the club extends down directly over your golf ball. These techniques are great for getting the proper stance and alignment to the hole. Placement of Your Feet - In terms of posture, it is also important to think about the way you place your feet and how you hold your body. If you typically miss your putts to the right, you may be standing too close to the ball. If you are missing to the left, you may be standing too far from the ball.

grip that is comfortable to you and experimenting with the various postures will eventually give you a stance that is right for you. Consider the basic techniques for improved posture and then settle into a stance that is most comfortable. Stick with What Works for You- Once you determine that successful stance, go ahead and stick with it even when you have a bad day. Practice it until it becomes perfect. Too many golfers become overly concerned with each specific detail of their stance, changing things every week and never really settling in to a relaxed posture. Don’t forget that a general relaxation and enjoyment of the game is paramount to having a successful swing and a low score. You have to have fun out there in order to truly enjoy the game!

These are not hard and fast rules but they are something to consider when you are adjusting your posture. Shoulders Over Hands - Your foot position will also effect the way your hands are hanging down from your shoulders. It is usually best if your hands are hanging directly beneath your shoulders. This will typically create a smoother stroke and a better direction on the ball. The most important consideration, however, is to keep your head and your body very still as you putt. You only need to move your arms and your hands. Nothing else! Relax and Enjoy - Finally, it’s important not to get too caught up with the mechanics of your putting. Some people will insist on certain grips that will supposedly be better than others. Finding a

Weak turnout for strong performance CORNWALL, Ontario - Headlock for Hospice II raised just over $1,100 for Hospice Cornwall. Despite only selling 100 tickets ($12 each), Mecca Pro Wrestling (MPW) promoter Pat Paquette says there will be a round three. “Although disappointed with the turnout, we’re still satisfied nonetheless, because of where it’s all going,” said Paquette. The non-profit organization’s annual operational budget is $1.4 million. Sandy Collette, fundraising coordinator for Carefor Hospice Cornwall, and her team of volunteers must raise $500,000 of it. Headlock for Hospice II featured MPW talent like Payne (MPW champion), KL Shock & Ray Steele (MPW tag team champs), managed by Cornwall wrestler Randy ‘The Rage’ Berry, The

Barbarians (Damien & Myzery), and Ruffy Silverstein. “It had everything you can wish for in a wrestling show: action, comic relief, drama, and suspense,” said Berry. There’s no disputing the latter (click here for video proof). As his opponent laid on the mat, twisting in pain, MPW’s Bearicade attempted a big splash when the top rope gave out. “He could have died instantly,” said Berry. “He was slightly concussed, but fortunately he’s fine.” He started Headlock for Hospice in 2013 after his father passed away at the palliative care facility. The TVCogeco televised wrestling charity event took a one-year hiatus before making its recent return to the ring.

The power of funny Cornwall comedian Mark Vincent delivered some lasting punchlines as the special guest ring announcer. The owner and operator of Off Your Rocker Productions, an event-promotion business, booked three-time former WWE champ Mankind (AKA Cactus Jack and Dude Love) for his one-man stage show Hardcore Legend: An Evening with Mick Foley, at Ramada Cornwall in October 2014. His next wrestling-themed event features two WWE legends from the 80s and 90s. The ‘Tales from the Road’ tour with Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts’ featuring ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, takes place at La Maison in Cornwall on Tuesday, August 4. Tickets are $20 (w/ meet & greet $40) and available at the tavern and Floral Expressions.

The second round of Headlock for Hospice at the Agora Centre in Cornwall on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Paul Potvin

done annually. Hoses and drive belts should be checked for cracks, bulges or frayed edges. The radiator should be kept clean by periodically using a garden hose and a soft brush to carefully remove bugs, dirt and debris. It takes very little time and money to make sure your car runs properly during summer, and although breakdowns happen, they can definitely be minimized by taking a few extra preventive maintenance steps.

Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. The cooling system works harder during hot temperatures to prevent overheating of the engine. To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. As a reminder, never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir. As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles. This will keep the cooling system fresh and clean inside, which helps prevent corrosion and assures that the coolant has the proper boiling point and protection. A pressure test, thermostat test, a cooling fan test and a visual inspection for leaks and corrosion should also be

living? I expected the Colts boss to stand pat on this new contract and he did. But how could our council still vote when really, like me, they are all in a conflict. Sure they have nothing to gain, but I would think that David Murphy made sure that many of his colleagues voted in favour of the Colts. I would have done the same thing. It may be unethical, but it happens all the time, it’s called lobbying the vote or is that just politics? This one should have been left with a mediator of some sort. Someone from Neptune with no ties to either side and then we all live with the decision.

6317057

Keep Your Cool….

Coun. Bernadette Clement simply suggested it, so why then, when Maurice Dupelle tried for 60-40, was he was ignored? There was no discussion at all on his 60-40 suggestion. It was like the first one up sets the standard. All the councillors made mention of the Colts history, the usage of local players and some even took shots at the Kings players who do not live here. (Some actually do live here). When Ian MacInnis failed to budge last year when it came to giving up advertising rights at the civic complex, I supported him 100 per cent - it is his livelihood and I asked everyone who wanted my opinion, would you give up your

6315509

Really? 70-30? Sometimes, you really should stay quiet when it comes to things like this, it’s not my realm, but after some thought - I can’t. What was our council thinking when they voted on the advertising contract at the complex for the Cornwall Colts and River Kings on June 22? Obviously not happy about making the decision, they went ahead and voted for a 70-30 split (if you can call 70-30 a split) in favour of the Colts.

To make matters worse, two of the eight councillors present deferred because of conflicts, David Murphy works for the team and Brock Frost sort of owned the team for a few months. Two others, were not even present. That left six members to decide the vote and one of them arrived midway through the comment and discussion portion. Before I go further, I must disclose that I too have a conflict, I cheer for the Colts and I work for the River Kings, so obviously, I hoped for an even share for both clubs or a manageable deal. Where did the 70-30 decision come from?

After five service stations in a row are selling at the very same price, I confidently continue on until the last of those stations is 50 kilometers behind me, then I give in when I’m running on fumes. Shar’s Tip of the Week When you don’t want to take a crystal chandelier apart, here’s an easy, no mess way to clean it. First, put a few towels on the floor under the chandelier and spread several thicknesses of newspaper over the towels. Next, to prevent any moisture from getting into the sockets, cover each bulb with a small plastic bag and secure it with a twist tie. Now, spray enough window cleaner on each pendant so that the dirt runs off onto the newspaper. The pendants can then dripdry, or you can polish them with a soft cloth for more shine.

The place is an overpriced dive, but you take it. Next morning, bright and early, you’re glad to be on your way. You’re glad, until just over the next hill there’s a brand new motel, offering loss-leader opening special rates. Yes, there are other things in life, other than death and taxes that are certain. My mother used to say, “Nicky, things could be worse.” Sure enough, she was right. Things did get worse. However, I have since learned that after they get worse, they are certain to get better, far better than I could have hoped for.

new moon. It is absolutely certain that there will be no mosquitoes or black flies during that July during the last century. It is absolutely certain that the air pump and patches will remain completely unnecessary during the entire five-week bike trip. When have the Maritimes been without rain for five-weeks? It was during the summer of a five-week bike trip when an umbrella and a rain cape took up space in my panniers. When I make an expensive purchase I carefully retain the purchase receipt and manufacturer’s warranty, and even take out an extended warranty. Only when I accidentally dispose of the receipt and decide to forego the extended warranty, guess what happens. Yup, you’re right.

Born in Dartmouth, April 3, 1922, Al was raised in the loving Nova Scotia home of Percy Francis Ring, and Emile (Waterfield) with four brothers, Reg, Tib, Charlie and Don, all of whom have predeceased him. He is also predeceased by his wife Lorraine and nephew David Ring. He is survived by his daughter Joyce Ring-Kaneshiro of Chicago and sister-in-law Jean Horne Ring of Dartmouth. A big thank you goes out to the management and staff at Quinn’s Inn for going above and beyond. The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband’s occupation. “He’s a funeral director,” she answered. “Interesting,” the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40’s, and a preacher when in her 60’s, and now - in her 80’s - a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and explained: “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.” (Oh, hush-up and just laugh.)
