200 YEARS AND COUNTING: Fergusons have been farming for generations in the Cornwall area

David Ferguson is flanked by his uncle, Gordon (left) and father Ken at the family farm on South Branch Road in Cornwall. The farm is 200 years old, and the house in the background is a sprightly 166. with as many as 10 living under one roof at a time. Those children went on to become teachers, lawyers, soldiers, nurses…even a clock maker – and more farmers, of course. “The heritage of it – that means a lot,” said David, who is getting married July 4 to his

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall family that carved a niche for itself on South Branch Road is celebrating a huge anniversary next month – one that only comes around once in a lifetime. Make that several lifetimes. The Ferguson family has been farming a 100acre plot of land on South Branch Road for 200 years. While the given names of those farmers have changed over the decades – things began with Duncan Ferguson, a veteran of the War of 1812 who was wounded in the Battle of Ogdensburg in 1815 – the surnames of the owners of what is now a small dairy operation have remained constant through everything from Canadian confederation to the Great Depression and every world war in which this country has fought. The current owner of Oakwood Farms is Ken Ferguson, who at 74 is looking to turn the reigns over to his son David in the not-too-distant future and continue the tradition of family farming on a property that includes a 166-yearold solid brick house that reeks of history. “I often wonder how they made an existence, especially with the last two winters we’ve had,” said Ken, when asked about farming land that has stood the test of time for dozens of growing seasons. “There used to be a log cabin about 100 feet from this house,” he continues, gesturing with

his hand to an original piece of shelter the Ferguson family ancestors enjoyed. “There’s still an impression in the ground, of where it used to be. When we would plow it some old dishes used to come up.” The big thing coming up now is a party. The Fergusons are inviting family, friends and neighbours to a 200th anniversary celebration July 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the farm. Partygoers will get a chance to talk about the past…and the future. Ken’s son David is set to take over the farm. Both father and son agree heritage is part of their daily lives. “We have acres on the farm that is rough, that you don’t work,” said David. “The settlers couldn’t work it either, because the stones are at the surface.” Some of the stones that could be cleared 200 years ago still have all the hallmarks of the backbreaking work that farming was…and in some cases still is. “We come across big stones on the line fences that the pioneers put there,” said Ken. How did the pioneers put them there? They drilled holes, by hand, into the massive boulders, and would then drag them, with a team of horses, to the edge of the property so that the land could be used to grow crops. But crops weren’t the only thing grown on the Ferguson farm. The old brick house that supported much of the family (it’s now 166 years old) saw 30 children raised since 1849,

Frost emails colleagues to say he is on ‘vacation’, plans return to city hall next week CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall city councillors are becoming increasingly frustrated with their colleague Brock Frost who has still not addressed an emailed decision to resign. Frost has emailed his colleagues, apparently, suggesting he is on a much-needed vacation and won’t be attending Monday’s planning advisory committee meeting, said one councillor. But Frost has indicated he will be in attendance at the June 22 council meeting, according to the

same email. But that missive has only served to heighten questions about Frost’s intentions, since he emailed Cornwall media weeks ago and said he would be resigning effective July 1 after reports that he has been charged with fraud and forgery in Quebec. He is scheduled to appear in court June 19. “I don’t really know what the hell is going on,” said Coun. Andre Rivette. “We’re getting the odd email from him. He’s said he’s going to (the Association of Municipalities of Ontario meeting) in August.” The Frost sideshow is creating talk in the city and

a distraction that many councillors agree they do not need. “It is a distraction absolutely,” said Coun. Maurice Dupelle. “It creates people talking. And they’re talking about council as a whole. “I think he’s got to make a decision. And I think that will create the answers for council and we’ll proceed in whichever way.” Frost was once again sent emails from Seaway News, and voicemails have been left, but he has not responded to requests for comment. Coun. David Murphy suggested enough is enough in that regard.

“Most politicians go out of their way to make it painstakingly clear as to what they are doing,” he said. “If I was in his shoes I would want the public to know what my full intentions were, regardless of what they are. “I think there needs to be some clarification. It’s discussion I’ll have with him one on one. As councillors we always have to be respectful of each other and work as a unit.” Coun. Carilyne Hebert agreed. “It’s the first thing people ask me,” she said. “I’d just like some clarity.”

Four inquiries made about creating medical marijuana operations in Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - Four inquiries have been made at city hall about setting up medical marijuana operations within Cornwall - but don’t expect to see anything built soon. Planning staff at city hall will be drafting standards that will have to be followed should a medical marijuana operation gain a federal license to begin production within Cornwall.

Last year Health Canada introduced regulations pertaining to the commercial production of medical marijuana in those facilities which have secured a federal license. “The license necessitates that the zoning on such facilities be appropriate,” says a report going to the planning committee Monday. Many cities have introduced this new land use into their zoning bylaws using appropriate land use criteria. A city report later this year is

expected to provide a review of the different approaches used by other municipalities, related to the introduction of medical marijuana operations. “It should be noted that while hundreds of applications have been made to Health Canada, a small percentage have been approved,” reads a report from city senior planner Mary-Joyce Smith. “Municipalities which receive legitimate and complying facility proposals, and which are

approved by Health Canada, stand to gain economically.” Public comments on the matter are expected to be collected at a meeting scheduled for Aug. 17 at city hall. The closest medical marijuana facility to Cornwall is located in Smiths Falls, though a Quebec company is looking to create such an operation in Bombay, N.Y., just over the international border.

Outdoor art show returns: These kids have talent Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Budding artists showcased their masterpieces at Hye Kung’s fifth annual kids’ art exhibition. Artwork, from more than a dozen students who attend the private art class that Kung runs from her home, was displayed in a large tent on her front yard Sunday morning (June 14). With mom and dad by her side, Fabienne Lafrance, 12, described her pieces, in particular a painting of a flower that took three weeks to complete, using the shading and mixing techniques

she’s learning in class. “This one I blended the purple and white just like a real flower, and I put more details,” said Lafrance. The artistic streak runs in the Lafrance family, and her mother, Marie-Claude, was quick to assign the credit to Fabienne’s father, Norm. “Her talent is all from her dad – he’s an artist,” said Marie-Claude. The Long Sault resident dabbles mostly in pen and ink, but has tried his hand at pencil, charcoal, and pastel. He has started to work with acrylic, but finds it can be a difficult and complicated medium, dealing not only with colours but also shading.

news

“I’m so happy and proud to see Fabienne keeping up with it,” said Norm. Kung enjoys hosting the public exhibit for her students, all aged nine to 15, almost much as much as they relish the accolades. “The turnout was amazing. It was really packed, and it’s been busy,” said Kung. The teacher, who specializes in watercolour and acrylic painting, graduated with honours from a four-year fine arts program at Wonkwang University in South Korea, and has since been in juried art exhibitions and festivals in Cornwall, Ottawa and Kingston.

“It’s nice to see their friends and family discover their artwork. Every time they finish something, I want them to show it,” she said. Surrounded by family, 13-year-old Lauren MacDonell showed off her paintings of flowers, trees, and animals. It was her second year exhibiting. “The class is really fun, and it’s nice for my family to come out and see what I’ve made,”said MacDonell. Her mother Colleen MacDonell was just as excited to be there. “She’s very proud of her efforts,” said Colleen. “And so am I.” For more information, visit facebook. com/HyesArt.

The rule book may indicate drought, but the weather says otherwise Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - While the government rule book suggested we should be bracing for a drought, one only has to look outside to see there’s anything but on the horizon. Both the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) and the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNCA) had instituted so-called “Level 1 Low Water Responses” that can be a precursor to fullblown drought warnings.

But Phil Barnes, a water resources engineer with the RRCA, said in an interview no one should be panicking. “It sounds terrible when you hear drought,” he said. “You think of California and what they are going through. “But it’s not a Third World War headline. It’s just a warning.” And with all the rain we’ve had so far in June, it’s safe to say a drought is hardly a concern for the time being. The RRCA lifted its low-water response Monday.

The low-water response was instituted thanks to Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry guidelines which suggest that it must be implemented when precipitation levels fall below a certain mark over a specific period of time. In this case, from March to May, there had not been much in the way of rain compared to historical averages. Barnes said if the region receives less than 80 per cent of historical average, a lowwater response is triggered. The issue, though, is that Mother Nature

responded - big time. “Since (June 1) the skies have opened up,” he said. In fact, in the last 30 days, we’ve received 134 per cent of historical averages when it comes to rain, with more forecast this week. The RRCA monitors precipitation and water levels throughout Cornwall; South Glengarry; and portions of North Glengarry, South Stormont and North Stormont\, while SNCA handles the balance of our region.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The third edition of a casual, yet chic patio party raised upwards of $45,800 for the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation. Over 300 people attended BDO Canada and the CCH Foundation’s sold-out Denim & Diamonds fundraising event at the Nav Centre on Saturday night (June 13) to help bring a chemotherapy program to the local hospital. CCH Foundation Executive Director Erin Killoran boasted that the Seaway City could have it up and running by the end of 2015. “The proceeds always go towards the highest priority need at the hospital, and right now we’re working on chemotherapy,”

said Killoran. “It’s coming soon.” This year’s outdoor event featured specialty barbecue stations, a silent auction, signature drinks, and live music. Pommier Jewellers donated a $1,000 ring that was raffled off at the event. “A good hospital makes a great community,” said store owner and sponsor Andre Pommier. “We’re here helping out a worthy cause but everyone is having so much fun.” His downtown establishment will be holding a silent auction on another handmade ring (one-carat diamond) with all proceeds going to the CCH Foundation, along with matched funding. CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall bikers against brain cancer rallied for an annual day-long fundraiser that ends on a ‘Crazy Train’ to La Maison this evening. Dr. Paul Poirier, a Cornwall chiropractor who is battling a terminal form of the disease, founded the annual Bikers Against Brain Cancer fundraisng ride in 2010. The day began with an open invitation for breakfast in the large parking lot at his Pitt Street business, before embarking on the scenic route through Lancaster, Alexandria, St. Albert and returning to the city. The motorcycle circuit to draw awareness and raise funds for brain cancer research first sped off with 55 riders. This year the number ballooned to more than 100. Mya Jackson, a six-year-old diagnosed with

a rare disease known as NF2 - an inherited ailment that leads to the formation of tumours in the brain and parts of the nervous system, was the ride’s guest of honour. Find out more about her story here. “Everyone is showing up here to support what we all believe in,” said Tanya Lamarche, Mya’s mom. “We all have a story of someone close to us who has gone through something like this.” Mya had brain surgery two months ago and has since been “doing great.” She still has a tumour on her spine and around her ears that are being monitoring with MRIs every three to six months. The energy from the day carries into the night with the Crazy Babies, a Sabbath-Ozzy Osbourne tribute band, at La Maison, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The local watering hole will also host the fundraiser’s final event on Aug. 8, with a Led Zeppelin tribute band. Other events throughout the week helped raised funds and awareness for the cause. Riverdale Terrace’s Supper and Magic Show brought in over $5,000 to support brain research at McGill University’s Montreal Neurological Institute..

CORNWALL, Ontario – A multi-million dollar windfall is just weeks away for Cornwall and the surrounding area. Jim Brownell, chair of the 2015 International Plowing Match, which takes Sept. 22-26 at a Finch-area farm, spoken Wednesday of the massive economic benefits the event will include for the region at the Team Cornwall annual general meeting. “We couldn’t be in a more strategic place to play host to these people,” he said. “We have a huge opportunity to show these people who we are and what we have to offer.” And in return the plowing match, described as the Super Bowl of agricultural exhibitions, will generate millions of dollars within the local economy. As many as 100,000 people are expected to walk through the doors of the event. The 2012 event generated $20 million for the Waterloo region. “Operators and businesses are going to be very busy,” said Brownell, who noted that nearly two-thirds of the attendees come from farther than 40 km away when they visit the IPM. “In tourism jargon, if you come from farther

than 40 km you are considered a tourist,” he said to laughs from attendees at the Team Cornwall AGM. “Even though we’re from SD and G, I guess we can be tourists.” The Team Cornwall AGM saw the installation of new captains, including Peter Gault, Bob Peters, Amanda Brisson, Nada Kovinich, Paul Desnoyer, Alison Hudson, Denis Lapierre, Wendy Hargreaves, Diane Brown, Joanne Brault, Valerie Dore, Dani Tedesco-Derouchie, Todd Bennett and David Murphy. Desnoyers, Team Cornwall treasurer, told delegates the community-advocacy agency has an operating surplus of nearly $70,000. He noted some savings will be seen this year because Team Cornwall no longer employs clerical staff.

YOUTH NOW: New branding for Cornwall agency helping young people in need Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall agency that advocates for, and helps shelter children in need has undergone a rebranding - but one of their former clients hopes things don’t change too much. Youth Now is the new name of an umbrella agency that has helped young people in city and area through group homes like Grace Arbour in Cornwall, and through partnerships with community agencies like the Children’s Aid Society.

A launch event was held Wednesday in Cornwall at the OPG Visitor’s Centre. The branding will help put a new face on the agency, but its help with local children over the years is not expected to change - and Eliane Bergeron wouldn’t have it any other way. Bergeron, in 2008, was a youth in transition. She was looking to escape the abuse she was suffering at home, and was placed at Grace Arbour in Cornwall. She readily admits she had trouble with drugs, brushes with the law and was at a cross roads in her

life. Bergeron said caseworkers at Grace Arbour, including Alanna Wall and Kimberly Hayward, helped guide her back on track. “The reason I made it, is because of them,” she said. “I would have never come out of those struggles.” Today she advocates on behalf of young people who are facing similar challenges. “I want to be someone’s Alanna,” she said. Youth Now is in the midst of renovating a residence at the north end of Pitt Street, which

includes three apartments and two rooms that will house youth in transition. Dave Wood, Youth Now’s executive director, said the residence is expected to be ready for use by the end of the summer at the latest. Youth Now has supported children in Cornwall and area, Akwesasne, Prescott-Russell, Ottawa and Peterborough. Wood said as many as 30 young people are helped annually in Cornwall by Youth Now. Youth Now can be reached at youthnow.co and 1-888-644-9647.

OPINION

Rankings only count if you care - and we shouldn’t Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

The toughest part of this job, from week to week, is trying to find a topic to fill this space. Not unlike a serious case of pizza cravings, it keeps me up at night…and most days. But along with finding a weekly rant to subject you to, the perks of this job are pretty sweet – with perhaps my favourite being trips to the grocery store, Cornwall Square and (god, forbid) Wal-Mart. After doing this job for the better part of 20 years in a city as small as this, you run into people all the time. It’s great. In this business, in this community, journalists (read: hacks) meet people we’ve interviewed or photographed all the time – usually while we’re grabbing a shawarma, or picking up some groceries. It usually takes me a few minutes to figure out who they are for a couple of reasons: 1) I’m not very bright. 2) See number one.

But things came home to roost, quite literally, for me this week when I interviewed the Ferguson family at their farm just north of Cornwall on South Branch Road. The farm, as you can tell from reading our report at cornwallseawaynews.com, and on Page 2 of this week’s edition, is this summer celebrating its 200th anniversary as a family-run operation. As Mrs. Ferguson opened the door to the family home on Monday morning, just minutes after I had phoned her looking for directions, she asked me how I could forget their location after having been there before. I politely told her that I had never been to the farm in my life. “Yes you have, you did a story on that treehouse,” she said, pointing to the wooden structure that still stands guard in the Ferguson front yard. I still didn’t believe her, until she produced a clipping from a 20-year-old (probably more)

Standard-Freeholder that included my name, and a story I wrote as a teenager. The story was how her children, not even 10 yet if I remember correctly, built the treehouse with their own bare hands. One of those children, David, is now in the process of assuming ownership of the farm. He’s getting married soon, and it’s a safe bet that his children will one day play in the treehouse he helped build as a boy. Why do I bring this up? We’re a tightly-knit community, and getting tighter all the time...and sadly, the annual municipal rankings from the bozos at MoneySense magazine were released earlier this month. Not surprisingly, we were ranked near the bottom…again. I think we’re at around 174 of 209 places – and given the fact that the communities are in Canada means we’re probably somewhere between ‘fantastic’ and ‘awesome’ on a global scale. We scored well on taxes (take that newspaper

editors who think otherwise), affordable housing and even the weather – not counting this month. How can we do better? I’m not sure we can… and I don’t think we should even try. While I respect MoneySense as a publication, I don’t put a lot of stock in what they think of Cornwall, and you shouldn’t either. I wouldn’t trade my backyard in Cornwall, Ont. for a plot of land in Syria, North Korea or Russia …so let’s not attach too much legitimacy to a magazine that couldn’t find the Seaway City with a roadmap and a chauffeur. But I do care about what we think of ourselves, and the people we are. And with the amount of time I’ve spent getting to know Cornwallites that include politicians, business owners, police, judges, taxpayers, moms and dads there is one clear truth – outside rankings won’t change who we are. Even those that we forget about, only to be reminded years later. And that is a good thing.

basements and end up in waterways and landfill sites. Mayor Dennis Coderre is offering a unique opportunity to examine our relationship with plastics. Now is the time to support a full ban on plastic bags. Turtles, dolphins and whales can choke or starve by confusing plastic bags for jelly fish. On land, plastic bags kill birds, livestock and wild animals. Toronto was going to the first major city in Canada to ban retailers from offering plastic bags as of Jan. 1, 2013. This never happened. Many other cities were going to follow Toronto’s way and ban plastic bag.

If Montreal is serious, many cities will follow this lead. The huge opposition in Toronto came from the Ontario Convenience Stores Association and the Canadian Plastic Bag Association. Quite a few countries around the world have banned plastic bags. And according to available reports the ban is working fine. Bags made from cloth can be washed with other clothes. Let us hope that more and more municipalities across Canada will impose a complete ban on plastic bags. Plastic bags are an environmental problem. We all have to do all we can to improving the environment.

legislature around 2009, but there was a loophole regarding development on public land and private land. It’s just a shame the environment has to suffer in the name of progress. Hopefully the UCDSB followed the correct

procedure and had an environmental impact study done before clearing the land. Hope someone is listening. Regards, Ian Summers, Cornwall

War on plastic bags! Opinion Column – Sultan Jessa More commonly known as the society’s main symbol of wastefulness is under attack again. Several years back Toronto was going to ban plastic bags. Then it changed its mind. Now, Canada’s second largest city is seriously considering condemning plastic bags. This may not happen. This is the way I look at the proposal. Canadians use around 10 to 15 billion plastic bags every year. Some experts say if we tied 10 billion bags together, it would circle the earth more than 55 times. This may dramatic but it is true.

Plastic bags are made from non-renewable resources. Experts also tell us the average plastic bag is used for five minutes to carry your groceries or other purchases home. Yet, these single use plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down. Now this is a big problem and something drastic has to done to solve this. Plastic bags are known to kill sea birds, sea mammals and fish. Montreal has an opportunity to position itself as forward thinking community as far as the environment is concerned. If it ever imposes the ban, Montreal will become the first major Canadian city to make this sacrifice for a much bigger cause. Plastic bags also clog drains and flood

Dear editor: The UCDSB school being built at the corner of Nick Kaneb Drive and Marleau Ave. couldn’t have been planned in a worse spot. The site is at at the corner of a high traffic intersection and as far as I’m concerned will become even more congested when the school opens.

I would also suggest, although not a stringent environmentalist, that the land (Lynwood Forest?) on which the new school is being developed contained one particular plant species, namely the Trillium flower, which is supposedly protected in Ontario. There was a bill passed in the Ontario

Vacancies, cabinet ministers and the rearview mirror HERE AND THERE In the last 80 years, only two MPs from a federal riding that included Cornwall have served in cabinet - Lionel Chevrier and Ed Lumley, both members of a Liberal government. ... Get the feeling that the departures of John Baird and Peter McKay may be a harbinger of the demise of the Harper government come October? The Conservtives will go into the October sweeps minus three key people - McKay, Baird and the late Jim Flaherty. ... Set aside political loyalties, NDP leader Thomas Mulcair is the kind of guy most would enjoy having a beer with. If it is a toke, then J.T. is your man. AROUND AND ABOUT: Double celebration for city residents Mel and Jessie Ouderkirk on June 24. Mel turns 93 and on the same day they celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. ... Running a gun trafficking operation out of an eatery across the street from Cornwall Police Service headquarters might have been a brazen, nose-thumbing move but it was a gift for investigators who were given a perfect perch from which to observe the comings and goings at the shop. THIS AND THAT: If you want to watch the lowering of the centre section of the bridge, might want to bring a lawn chair and pack a lunch. It could take up to eight hours from start to finish. It is expect to be carried out late August or early September. ... The massive search for the two Dannemora escaped prisoners is costing New York State $1 million a day. That is about $999,992 more expensive than two bullets. ... Don’t know about you but I’m in the early stage of Mike Duffy trial fatigue. ... Claude McIntosh For some reason, there has been a lot of chatter on how to replace a vacant council seat. For the record, the rare time a seat becomes available a city council has three options: 1) hold a by-election, 2) give the seat to the person who came closest to being elected, and 3) appoint somebody who didn’t run for office. Twice since 1957 a mayor has been replaced. Emile Menard died just weeks into his term after upsetting long-time mayor Aaron Horovitz. Council voted to appoint Ald. Archie Lavigne who finished out the two-year term and kept the title in the 1958 election. In more recent history, Ron Martelle resigned late into his second term that started in 1994. Again, council voted to appoint one of its own. It went with the steady hand of veteran councillor Dick Aubry who finished out the term. He did not seek the seat in the 1997 election that put Brian Sylvester in the mayor’s office. When it comes to councillors, vacancies have occurred a half dozen times in the last 30 years. Once, an “outsider” was appointed. The other times the 11th place finisher was elevated. Never has the city considered a by-election. In fact, it is hard to find a municipality that has gone the by-election route. There is a cost, about $35,000 in our case. TRIVIA ANSWER: Richard Nixon, then Dwight Eisenhower’s vice-president, attended a St. Lawrence Power Project ceremony at the Robert Saunders Generating Station with Queen Elizabeth on June 27, 1959. TRIVIA: A 1948 map of Cornwall shows the Cornwall Brass Foundry factory on this street near the eastern boundary. It is now a residential area.

Homeopathy for Fever Blisters

Elegance School of Esthetics

Fever blisters are caused by a contagious virus called “Herpes Simplex”. Once a person is infected with oral herpes, the virus remains inactive, waiting for a weakened defence system to have the next outbreak. Sam was susceptible to these fever blisters when term papers and exams were approaching. He’d often get them on the lip, but lately he’d been getting several of them on the edge of his nostril. There would be itching and tingling for a few hours then a few fluid-filled blisters would erupt, and then finally, a yellow crust would form over the sores. These painful blisters looked awful for 7 to 10 days. Sam started taking the remedy Rhus Toxicodendron as soon as the tingling started and was surprised to find that the two very small blisters that did come out were uncomfortable for 3 days then nothing was left. The student understands that managing his stress is the answer to his herpes problem and promises to schedule an appointment with me to work on that issue. That way, Homeopathy can help by re-establishing the immune system to better control the stress.

Dan Cloutier said the police service will be looking to press criminal charges against the culprit(s). “Someone did this,” said Coleman. “I can’t see it being from the river, because of the injuries. A lot of the fur was still intact.” In response to the incident, Cornwall area animal lovers have created a Facebook group dedicated to raising reward money for information that will lead to an arrest and conviction.

He immediately informed Cornwall Community Police Service officers who, after arriving on scene, transported the young animal’s remains to the Stormont-DundasGlengarry SPCA branch in Cornwall. CORNWALL, Ontario - The latest update on the circumstances surrounding the death of a dog found in the St. Lawrence River: “The necropsy is complete.” Alison Cross, the Ontario SPCA’s director of marketing and communications, told Seaway News on Friday (June 12) that the post-mortem

examination has been conducted, but no further details will be released at this time. “We don’t place a deadline on our investigations. Reason being, as information unfolds it could result in a longer or shorter investigation,” said Cross in an email interview. At Lock 15 in the east end of Cornwall around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 26), Paul Coleman found what he described as the mutilated carcass of a Labrador retriever puppy.

Laying tracks for IPM & Rural Expo 2015 CORNWALL, Ontario - Young farmers followed in footsteps of generations past at Plowing Day in Ingleside. Plowmen, 4H Plowing Clubs and curious on-lookers got a small scale preview of the 2015 Stormont Dundas and Glengarry International Plowing Match (IPM) and Rural Expo at the Ontario Plowmen’s Association’s annual event on Saturday (May 30). The demonstration and coaching event held annually in advance of the IPM for prospective competitors included contemporary tractors and plows, antiques and horses. Kim Hadwen of Belleville brought Jake and Roy, his team of heavy horses, to the plow day at David Brown’s farm north of Ingleside. His grandson Tristan Boutilier, 12, also of Belleville, has been competing at the IPM for three years and will return to compete at the 2015 IPM at Finch, September 22-26. Historical plowing techniques: Kim Hadwen and his grandson Tristan Boutilier practice sulking plowing for the IPM & Rural Expo 2015.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Bust out your tents, flashlights, and marshmallows for Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley’s Unplugged Campout overnight fundraiser. The Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry chapter of the community-based, non-profit, faith-based organization invites families and local residents to set up a tent and sleepover at the Bonville Lion’s Club grounds on Friday, July 10, starting at 5 p.m. “We are planning to have six campfires for marshmallow roasting, a ceremonial Chinese lantern release at sundown and a stargazing area for participants,” said Charles Leclair, special events coordinator for Habitat Seaway Valley. Campers will rise and shine with a complimentary home-cooked breakfast, served up by the Bonville Lion’s Club from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday night will offer the option of either packing a supper or purchasing hot dogs on-site between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets for Habitat Seaway’s Unplugged Campout are $15 for adults and $10 for children (aged 16 and under). They can be purchased at the UPS Store (Cornwall), Home Hardware (Cornwall) and the Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley ReStore (Bonville). Leclair said the fundraiser is an electronicfree, no alcohol, tent only, rain or shine event. While camping under the stars for a night is fun, the charity hopes the event will get people thinking about those who are permanently without a place to call home, and bring awareness to the issues of affordable home ownership and inadequate housing. Proceeds will help build safe and affordable homes for low-income working families throughout SD&G (11 families including 28 children have been helped to date). The next home build is scheduled for 2016 in Glengarry County. The Habitat Seaway Valley’s Unplugged Campout overnight fundraiser is located at 17413 McPhail Road, St. Andrews West, Ont. NEWS

SEAWAY VALLEY THEATRE: New play, new director Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - The Seaway Valley Theatre Company is soon ready to raise the curtain on a new production, seen through the eyes of a brand new director. Opening on June 19, Figments, by Billy St. John, tells the story of a struggling playwright trying to finish his murder mystery. All the while, he is having relationship issues with himself, his mother, his imaginary mother, a neighbour he is in love with, and an imaginary version of her, explains first time director, Grant Reso. “When I first read it, I laughed all the way through” he said, but after just a handful of acting gigs under his belt, he wasn’t sure that he was up to the challenge of directing. “I thought, ‘I have no business;’ I’m still wet behind the ears.’” Despite some apprehension, he mentioned his interest in the project to fellow company member and stage veteran, Lacie Petrynka, who encouraged him to submit his pitch to the committee. “The rest is history,” said Reso who credits his stage manager, Mike Petrynka, another veteran, for having his back throughout the rehearsal process. “Luckily, if I’m stuck, he’s there to help

me. It’s not like they just threw me into the deep end; I have had some guidance.” A skilled comedic actor in his own right, Reso says that he has gained a great deal of respect for the work that directors do, through this experience. “I never thought this was going to be easy, but being on stage, I don’t really have an idea of what’s going through their head. It’s a lot of fun; it’s been a learning curve, but I’m enjoying it.” The talented cast of 13, including Jamie Carr - who incidentally gave a most entertaining performance in the recent production of Spamalot - have help with the task, he says. There are actually 14 characters, explained Reso, but Carr did such a great job at the audition that he was given two roles. “They’re really great people, somewhere or another most of us have worked together,” he said of the chemistry and working dynamic of the group. We have that camaraderie already in place.” As for what audiences can expect, Reso says a lot of laughter and a few tender loving moments. Parental guidance is suggested. “It’s nothing that a 12 year old hasn’t heard. There are a couple of risqué scenes, but it’s really not all that bad.” Figments a comedy by Billy St. John runs June 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 evening shows and June 21 matinee at Dream Builder Studio, 2107 Second Street W. Tickets are $20 and are available online at www.admission.com, or the Cornwall Civic Complex Box Office, 100 Water Street E. 613-938-9400.

Pictured from the Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s production of Figments are (in front L-R) Kyle Beaudette and Terry Mazerolle, (in back L-R) are Jennifer Robertson, Grant Reso, director, and Melissa Robertson.

be played by the entire family. Parents and kids can play together on the same course. In fact, golf courses are seeing more and more families playing together-and each member being equally passionate about the sport. Golf is well adapted to kids; even young children can play it. Little ones can start off by simply hitting balls; it’s not even necessary to

step foot on the course. Gradually, as they develop their putting and driving skills, you can introduce them to the rules of the game. For adults and kids alike, the greatest joy of playing golf is hitting balls. Each shot offers the satisfaction of watching the ball shoot up and away. And the more you improve, the more you want to become even more precise and

consistent. When kids are first introduced to golf, it’s important that they are coached well, since progress will keep them interested in playing. Golf is a sport in which you can improve, blossom and take on challenges. No two shots are the same. Golf also requires a lot of concentration and analysis. And it’s a great sport for kids.

Shar’s Tip of the Week Around the house, its a handy deordorizer. Although a baking soda and water solution is often recommended as a general-purpose cleaner, it doesn’t have as much cleaning power as a detergent. Its main purpose is to absorb odors. A sprinkling of dry baking soda before vacuuming a carpet will not help in the cleaning process but it will freshen carpeting just as well as any commercial carpet deordorizer such as Carpet Fresh. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a less alkaline powder. Leave an open box in the refrigerator and freezer, or sprinkle a little in the dishwasher, drains, garbage cans and cat litter boxes as it will absorb and deordorize.

and front. The eye is attracted to the brightest or lightest things, so avoid white on trim unless you have really great trim. Instead, go tone-ontone and make the trim a lighter or darker version of the body colour. Warm grey works with all colours. Paint out ugly things in the body colour so they disappear. If you want flowers or special features to stand out, give them a backdrop of greyed or dark colours. Painters always advise to invest in top quality exterior paint. From PPG, for example, the Manor Hall Timeless exterior line is self-priming, bridges cracks, gives one-coat coverage in many cases and comes with a lifetime guarantee. They say the modest incremental cost is well worth it. If you want to use bold colours but feel cautious, use them close to ground level where they are less obvious to neighbours, can be easily changed but still show personality where you can see and enjoy it. Don’t worry that summer colours may seem a little odd in the winter. You won’t be sitting out there in the cold months.

Bold, exterior colour is something we love to see on holiday homes in exotic places. Why is it then that we shun it for the exterior of our own home? While we want our paint investment to stand the test of time and feel it should blend into the streetscape, colour experts like Janice Lindsay of PINK colour + design tell us that the back of our house can tell quite a different colour story from the front. “It may seem strange to choose a different palette for the back,” says Lindsay, “but in fact, we use the back of our home quite differently.” The back is more personal and less formal, she observes. “And since you never see the front and back at the same time, they don’t have to be the same colour.” Lindsay advises to make a smooth transition on the side, and then do what you like. Have fun. “Think about where you would like to vacation, and choose your backside colours to take you there. It will feel like you are on holiday every time you step outside,” she says. From the PPG Pittsburgh Paints Voice of Colour palette, Lindsay offers this guide to colour holiday destinations: • Whites like Winter Mood (512-1) are tropical. Add indigo blue to white for the Mediterranean (Blue Odyssey, 347-6). • Pastels are Miami in general and South Beach in particular. Try Cedar Beige (227-4), Frosty Glade (256-4), or Bleached Spruce (208-4). • Blacks and charcoals on the body and trim look Japanese. Try Black Magic (518-7), or Black Elegance (531-7). • Ochre and sienna (Toffee Crunch, 216-4) evoke Tuscany or the South of France. • For the warm and rustic feel of Mexico check out the sunny yellows and oranges of the Hacienda Style collection at voiceofcolour.com. • A mix of bold colours can be Jamaica or Latin America. (Look at your summer wardrobe for inspiration.) • Mixed greens melt structure into foliage and enhance the garden experience. (All greens look good together.) Some of the same rules do apply to back

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in thee all my interests and desires. O St. Joseph, assist me by thy powerful intercession and obtain for me all spiritual blessings through thy foster Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord, so that, having engaged here below thy heavenly power, I may offer thee my thanksgiving and homage. O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating thee and Jesus asleep in thine arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near thy heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Say for Nine Mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail. (What A Man) 6287268

A big day at the Seaway Bridge Arch Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com “We’ve been planning this day for weeks and weeks. I told you and the kids we’d have to leave early, so let’s get going. Traffic leading to Cornwall will be heavy.” “Both of the grandkids are really looking forward to this. Charlie says he’s been practising with his new camera and Everleigh is going to use it as a project for her social studies class. Kyle and Krista say that for once, they’re going to work together.” “This will be a very special day for more than just three reasons: it’s the 65th anniversary of the official opening of the Seaway, June 26, 1959, when Elizabeth and Philip were here with their HMY Britannia. Then there was June 26, 2019, when the Seaway Bridge Arch was inaugurated. And today, June 26, 2024, the opening of the restored Cornwall Canal for pleasure craft.” “There’s some personal significance for me: April 17, 2014. That was my 746th ‘Dances With

Words’ column for the Seaway News. That was the one I pleaded for them to spare the centre span of the old bridge. Finally, someone listened!” “Grandpa, how high will we be when the elevator takes us to the lookout today? Will it be as high as the CN Tower?” “I’m not sure how high it is, Charlie, but they show a short movie all about it up there, and there is a display of photos too.” “Grandpa, can we throw some things, like paper airplanes or little parachutes off the Arch when we get up there?” “Of course not, Everleigh. Besides, it’s enclosed by some sort of safety glass all around. However, you’ll enjoy the fireworks they’re going to set off after the sun sets. Long before that, when the canoes and kayaks paddle under the Arch, the Snowbirds will do a flypast with their new aircraft. Until all that happens, take a look around. There’s so much to see. Way over there are the Adirondack mountains. Closer, you can see the ships heading for the Eisenhower lock. Even closer, there’s the

Moses-Saunders generating station.” And now, back to the reality of May, 2015. The demolition heavy equipment is inexorably making its way southward, away from the traffic circle, closer and closer to the centre span that has been Cornwall’s landmark since the late 1950s. The demolition work is going well. Every day there are many sidewalk superintendents gazing upward from their Brookdale Avenue lawn chairs. Unfortunately, there is negligible gazing forward into the future by municipal, provincial and federal politicians. The civil servants have been muted. There don’t seem to be any investors, businessmen or entrepreneurs ready to step into the breach. Am I the only one who sees potential value in rescuing parts of our heritage from the scrap yard? We failed to preserve the NYC (New York Central) right of way as a recreational path between Ottawa and the St. Lawrence. We failed to prevent the eastern end of the Cornwall Canal from being filled in. I can’t imagine Paris without the Eiffel

2024? – Daisies will still be blooming at the foot of Brookdale at Water Street, but I doubt that the ‘wise men’ who were at the helm of Cornwall’s politics and economy in 2015 will have awakened in time. Photo by Nick Wolochatiuk)

Tower, Ottawa without the Rideau Canal, San Francisco without the Golden Gate – or Cornwall without the Seaway Bridge Arch.

Drama camp set for this summer CORNWALL, Ontario - For 24 years groups of children have had the opportunity to gather at a special place to use their imagination, and to practice the ancient art of storytelling. This summer Dream Maker will be offering an opportunity for kids to do just that. Their acting/music camp features many aspects of

stage acting, drama, filmmaking and music performance and production. The young actors will get to perform in a well-rounded arts program that will teach them improvisation, speech projection, makeup, role playing, scene development and film making, TV shows and commercials. BUT it isn’t

all acting up. There are many other fun activities like swimming, sports in the park. This year’s camp has something amazing taking place. The movie “Star Kids” will be filming in Cornwall and is using the camp for a few of their scenes.

On the last day of the camp the young performers will have participated in a music video, movie making, and a live stage show. Call (613)-932-3510 for more information. DATES OF WORKSHOPS: JULY 6th to the 10th 8:00 am to 4:00 p.m. JULY 13th to the 17th 8:00 am to 4:00 p.m.

80 golfers had a wet day of golf at Summerheights Golf Links on Friday June 12th!! The 32nd annual Golf to endMS sponsored by Cornwall Tire Service and Scotiabank still raised $16,827.00 and everyone enjoyed the day immensely.....a great steak dinner was had by all and golfers got to pick from many amazing prizes to finish off the day, they loved their gift from the chapter as well!! Thank You to all participants, volunteers and corporate sponsors for their continued dedication and support. One city councillor, who spoke with us this week, had this take on colleague Brock Frost: “It’s time to take his head out of his butt.” Only they didn’t say butt. Congrats to Michael Galvin on his recent appointment as chair of the 2015 United Way campaign. He’s sure to do a great job – too bad he cheers for the wrong hockey team. You can check out our report on Galvin at cornwallseawaynews.com. Check out that CBC report on a Cornwall photographer who snapped some images of a woodpecker fighting off a squirrel. Google “CBC Cornwall photographer.”

If you want to find out when the sun will shine just ask Seaway News editor Todd Lihou. When he schedules time off…it rains. So just do the opposite of what he does. In fact, you should apply that strategy to everything. “Lihou did this? Let’s do something else.”

After being married for 40 years, I took a careful look at my wife one day and said “Forty years ago we had a cheap house, a junk car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10-inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 23-year-old girl. Now, I have a $500,000 home, a $35,000 car, a nice big bed and a large screen TV, and I’m sleeping with a 62-year-old woman. It seems to me that you’re not holding up your side of things.” My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 23-year-old girl and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap house, driving a junk car, sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 10-inch black and white TV. Aren’t older women great? They really know how to solve an old guy’s problems.
