How long he will stay depends on the progress of relief efforts. “As the need for foreign help goes down... that’s when all the countries will start pulling out,” he said. But that could take some time. While Borer said the Nepalese are now sorting through the rubble to save what construction materials they can to rebuild, it will be a Herculean effort. “What we’re up against now, is the monsoon season starts in a few weeks,” he said. “Every year they have landslides. “But the people here are very resilient.” Borer has been in touch with his family, including his wife and children who live in Ingleside. He said the emails he has received from his family have been a great support, given that he is nearly 12,000 km away from home. And Borer added he is heartened by the help he and his soldiers are offering. “This is why I got into the army, to do these kinds of things,” he said. His boss in Cornwall, Lt.-Col. Steve Young who is the commanding officer of the Highlanders, said troopers love this kind of deployment, despite the harships of the countries involved. “That’s we train for. And that’s our business,” said Young. “I’m a big believer of sending people out to do things like this. “We’re pleased to be able to provide people as they are available.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - It was his 26th anniversary as a Canadian soldier and Capt. James Borer celebrated in typical military fashion - with hard work. Borer, a reservist with the SD and G Highlanders, is also a member of Canada’s Disaster Assistance Response Team and has been deployed to Nepal to help with earthquake relief efforts.
His job is simple: Borer takes a team of soldiers into hard hit Nepalese communities (right now he’s in the Charikot region of the country) and assesses the severity of the destruction. capt. borer His team then reports back to decision-makers who send assets into those communities to help with relief. The work is difficult, and the scenes are right out of a warzone, though no bombs have been dropped. “Ninety per cent of these villages have been destroyed,” he said. “Most of these villages have not had access to quality cement (for construction). They are completely destroyed. “It’s the same everywhere.” Borer has been in Nepal for a little more than a week as part of Canada’s aid effort in Nepal - a country ravaged by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25, where nearly 7,800 people have been confirmed killed.

A sweet Melody for Mother’s Day CORNWALL, Ontario - Generations of wisdom and a kind gesture made a big impression on new parents at the Cornwall Community Hospital. Residents from Chartwell Chateau Cornwall handed out Mother’s Day cards and knitted toques to hospital patients and visitors on Friday (May 8). When the trio of do-gooding seniors was introduced to Erica Primeau and her newborn daughter (and second child), a lifetime of memories as moms, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers washed over them.
Melody Primeau was born at 8:44 a.m. on May 8, 2015. “Enjoy the times you hold your baby in your arms – always keep that wonderful feeling,” said Stella Marleau, 89. Erica was able to hold Melody immediately after the caesarean (C-section) birth while still in the operating room thanks to a new skin-to-skin initiative at CCH. “The babies are much happier being close to their moms,”said Jackie Girard, RN-manager of the CCH Women and Children’s Health Department. She noted that a lullaby rings out over the PA system whenever a baby is born (twice for twins). The staff considers it “a real morale booster.”
The cards being handed out came with special messages of encouragement and sage guidance. Some featured quirky parenthood survival tips for the bumps along the way. The refreshing dose of offbeat humour was provided by the trio’s socalled “wild card.” Chartwell Chateau Cornwall sales consultant Brianne Vervoorn and office manager Roxanne Lafrance also joined in on the fun. “Our residents will still be celebrated on Sunday with a special brunch, complete with delicious food, flowers, family and friends. But this year we wanted to do something a little different and get involved with the community.”

Fake blood, real message: Teens crash their prom in drunk driving simulation CORNWALL, Ontario - The graphic head-on car crash staged for high school seniors delivered a sobering lesson, and judging by the hundreds of shocked expressions it may have been learned. Police, paramedics and firefighters hosted Safe Grad 2015 to educate students on the dangers of driving while impaired during prom night and graduation season. The annual event on Thursday (May 7) gathered nearly 1,100 teenagers from across Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry. Students acted as accident victims and real rescue personnel responded to the scene sprawled across the concrete floor of the Cornwall Civic Complex. Playing the drunk driver was RothwellOsnabruck senior Shayla Kroeze who was covered in fake scrapes, cuts, and blood from the staged event.
“Just acting it out made a few of us cry because we thought about if it happened to one of our friends,” said Kroeze. “We want people to make safe choices. If you’re drinking find another ride home.” Fellow R.O. senior Calla Legue played one of the injured victims. “Even though it was just a simulation, it felt absolutely terrifying,” said Legue. Bradley Nuttley, community safety coordinator with Cornwall SD&G EMS, said the event’s focus this year’s is “making smart decisions.” “It’s not only about underage drinking, it’s about distracted driving, especially texting, and getting behind the wheel while being high on drugs,” said Nuttley. Over 24 community partners rallied at Safe Grad to help push the message, knowing prom parties are currently being planned in the city and the neighbouring townships. St. Joseph’s student Shawnia Labelle vowed she would never get in a vehicle with an impaired

She plans on getting her driver’s licence this summer, so she tested her skills at an interactive display manned by Ivan Labelle of Centre de sante commnautaire de l’Estrie. Labelle attempted to text as she guided a tiny
vehicle attached to a stick along a street map sketched on a large cloth. Barely two messages were sent before she ran a mock red light and collided into a street pole. “Students realized when you’re driving you can only you do one thing at a time, or people get hurt,” said Ivan Labelle. “I was glad to hear a lot of them say that texting and driving is not a realistic option.”

Stay Thirsty: Summer Beer Fest coming to Jet Set Pub patio CORNWALL, Ontario - Seaway Food Festival founder Sebastien Manigat’s taste for untapped potential has led to Cornwall’s inaugural Summer Beer Fest. The event will take over the Jet Set Pub patio (Nav Centre) on Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “At the moment, there is no similar event in the SD&G area,” said Manigat. “Our belief is that there are growing segments of Cornwall residents who are yearning for this type of social and cultural experience.” The festival aims to attract all members of the community to a unique gathering that will promote local restaurants and various regional breweries via tastings, samples, promotional materials, and one-on-one information sessions. Breweries such as Big Rig, Cassel Brewery, Barley Days, Bicycle Craft, Lake of Bays, and La Tuque de Broue will be on site during the

Homeopathy for Constipation
The constipated person who best benefits from taking the Homeopathic Alumina is usually a thin, dry person. His stool is usually dry, his skin also. Rectum is sore, dry, itchy and can occasionally bleed. Even if he hasn’t had a bowel movement in 2-3 days, he still has little desire to go. Often that person will have very little vital heat. Whereas the constipated person who benefits from Colubrina has many ineffectual urgings to have a bowel movement, so usually only small quantities are eliminated at each attempt. There can be itching and painful hemorrhoids. Alcohol and spicy foods add to the problem. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease. So two people with the same problem may require different remedies.

Several restaurants and eating establishments will also be participating as food vendors during the event, including Bar Q, Truffles & Table 21, Schnitzels, Moustache Joe’s, and Love Love Food. Christian Barque, owner of Bar Q, witnessed a tremendous response from his customers and the community in the past two editions of the Seaway Food Festival. “People are genuinely excited that we are promoting our businesses and our community as a whole in this manner,” said Barque. “This is another way for us to do so in a fun summer setting. We are very much looking forward to it!” Local craft brewers have recognized the Jet Set Pub and Cornwall as a community starving for the craft industry, according to Ian Bentley, food & beverage director at Nav Centre. “My goal since arriving to the Nav Centre last fall has been to increase the overall awareness and selection of craft in the area,” said

SERVING CORNWALL’S GREATEST NEEDS SINCE 1933 NEWS
Young African woman looks to continue her schooling in Cornwall Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Beti Girma has already spent a couple of years in Cornwall - and the transplanted Ethiopian wants to finish her schooling right here in the Seaway City. It was on March 23, 2013 that she made the move to Cornwall and took up residence with Sandra Knight and her husband Scott. The Cornwall couple have already adopted four children from Ethiopia, and took Girma under their wing a few years ago. They helped her with schooling and other facets of life in Ethiopia, and a couple of years ago were granted permission by Immigration Canada to bring Girma to this country to stay with them on a student visa. Girma said making the move to Cornwall has been eye-opening, and could eventually become life-changing. When asked about some of the biggest changes she’s experienced since making the move to Canada, Girta answered without hesitation. “I can eat three meals a day...maybe more,” she said
matter-of-factly. “And it’s so safe here. I feel safe.” Ethiopia remains a work in progress, both economically and politically. If residents wish to talk about the economy, or the government, it’s done in hushed tones, and only with trusted friends or family. “To her, this is a dream,” said Sandra Knight. “We were helping her as best we could. But we wanted to get her to Canada.” Knight, who has made as many as five trips to the African country since she and her husband adopted their last two children in 2007, said the country continues to struggle despite a young population that is educated and motivated to work. But it appears a lack of jobs and a withering economy is holding young people back. It’s why she wants to see Girma not only succeed at high school in Canada, but perhaps move on to post-secondary studies as well. The problem is, it won’t come cheap. Because Girma is a non-resident, her education at Holy Trinity Secondary School must come out of pocket – to the tune of nearly $12,000.

Council to create code of conduct committee Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – Councillors and city hall administrators will sit on a committee that will determine the look of a code of conduct for elected officials in Cornwall. City council Monday night approved the creation of the committee. It’s expected the committee will only meet on a few occasions before coming back to council with the code. “A two-day committee, not a long-term, drawn out committee process,” said Coun. Brock
The members of the committee will include Frost, O’Shaughnessy, Coun. Bernadette Clement, Coun. Justin Towndale, CAO Norm Levac and human resources manager Geoff Clarke. City hall wants to hear from residents on what they think a new code of conduct for the mayor and councillors should focus on. The city has rolled out an online survey which coincided with council’s Monday night debate. The survey can be found at http://cornwall. survey.esolutionsgroup.ca/TakeSurvey.
Frost, the chief proponent of the creation of the code of conduct. “I’d like to get this code adopted as soon as possible.” Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy pointed out that a previous iteration of council passed on such a document, so putting another one together shouldn’t be difficult. “I don’t think the wheel has to be reinvented,” he said. A code of conduct will require council to amend its procedural bylaw, as well as tweak its council/CAO covenant that was created a few years ago.
aspx?SurveyID=78KJ37l. It includes seeking public opinion on where council should focus its code of conduct, including increased transparency at city hall, conflict of interest accusations and the role of council/ administration. The idea of a code of conduct is not new among Ontario municipalities. Frost was successful in getting both the idea of a new code, and the appointment of an integrity commissioner forwarded to city administrators to examine the issue further. - With files from Seaway News.

UN-SEXY: Comic Strippers know they’re not hot, it’s what makes it funny when they try Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Roman Danylo isn’t a real stripper, he just plays one on the stage. The creator of the Comic Strippers Improv Group, which will play in Cornwall May 21 at Aultsville Theatre, is the first to admit he’s not a person who takes his clothes off for a living (well, not all of them, anyway) and wouldn’t be able to make a connection with that industry, even if he wanted to. “I wouldn’t because what we’re trying to do is show the irony of that kind of show,” he said. “Everyone is aware early on, we’re not super sexy.”
The Comic Strippers are a fictitious male stripper troupe, played by a cast of some of Canada’s best improvisational comedians including Danylo, Ken Lawson, David Milchard and Chris Casillan. Their intent is to be sexy...but it just comes out funny. Danylo got the idea after his wife returned from a real male strip show and told him that the venue was packed. It’s how he got the idea to turn that kind of show on its ear by introducing characters who are decidedly unsexy yet think they are what (nearly) every woman wants. “We’ve got torsos - we can do that,” he said. “The audience really plays a role too - they get into it.” Danylo was quick to point out two things: one, there is no gratuitous nudity in
the Comic Strippers Show (you probably wouldn’t want to see it anyway)...and the performers are committed to the comedy in their craft. “We did nine shows in a row in Australia,” he said. “You’re not supposed to do that kind of thing in your late 40s, but also we started to get into shape - which takes away from the irony of what we’re doing.” Not unlike real male strip shows, audience members are offered pictures with the cast members of the show. But the dif- The Comic Strippers, Ken Lawson, Chris ference is Comic Strippers gives the photos away. Hitting all the right notes in our region Roxanne Delage Here’s some of what is going on, musically, in and around the community… Let’s start off with some exciting music theatre news. Q: What do you get when you mix “a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood-red cape, and a slipper of gold?”… A: The ingredients required in the Tony Award winning musical, Into the Woods, which the Seaway Valley Theatre Company recently announced will be their musical production, next year. Break a leg to the company for what, I am certain, will be a great one. The Seaway Winds Concert Band is “Banding Together Again,” on May 25, at Aultsville Theatre,
with musicians from around the province. “It’s a composite community band - Seaway Winds plus another 40 musicians from other bands - coming in to join us for the weekend,” explained Barb Hunter, founder and director. “It’s a chance for all these community bands to get together. We did this a couple of years ago and it was very successful, so we thought we’d try it again.” Concert tickets are $15 for adults and free for children 10 and under, and available at Cornwall & the Counties Tourism, 691 Brookdale Ave., Unit E, or at the Cornwall Square Administration Office. Visit www.seawaywinds.ca for further details. The St Lawrence Acoustic Stage recently announced that they will be moving from their
home of several years, the OETIO/Morrisburg Meeting Centre, as it is no longer available for rent to them as of the end of June. The music, however, won’t die, as the Upper Canada Playhouse has opened their arms and fabulous theatre for this very special showcase. Closing off its 2014/15 season, on June 6, is the Juno-nominated duo, Madison Violet, who has had the prestigious distinction of touring with Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Cafe, and has shared stages with contemporaries such as Chantal Kreviazuk, Ron Sexsmith, and The Indigo Girls. Next year’s lineup will be announced as dates and performers are confirmed. For further information, visit http:// www.st-lawrencestage.com.

Hundreds of jobs as Walmart takes over former Target distribution centre
todd.lihou@tc.tc
Todd Lihou
CORNWALL, Ontario - The promise of 1,000 jobs and millions in economic spinoffs was presented Friday morning when Walmart Canada announced it is taking over a former distribution centre in Cornwall. Walmart said it will find a new home in what was once the Target Distribution Centre (also known as Eleven Points Logistics) in Cornwall’s industrial park. The $165-million Walmart deal also includes a sizeable retail expansion as Target pulls out of the country. “Walmart is committed to the Canadian market, and this agreement helps us accelerate our growth plans ensuring more Canadians have access to our low prices,” said Dirk Van den Berghe, President and CEO of Walmart Canada, in a statement. “The 13 stores acquired are well situated, and we are excited to bring Walmart’s successful Supercentre offer to customers in these markets. We have served millions of loyal customers, and look forward to continuing to serve them through our stores and growing e-commerce business.” The transactions are subject to the approval of the court in accordance with Target Canada’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act proceedings and certain other customary conditions. Walmart expects to invest a further approximately $185 million to renovate the 13 stores it has acquired, as well as the Cornwall distribution centre, bringing Walmart’s total investment to approximately $350 million. “Whenever the building came available I did communicate with a few companies and Walmart was one of them,” said Cornwall economic development manager Mark Boileau. “They recognized it as a good building. “There aren’t too many companies that can use a building like that.” Work on all locations is expected to start within the next few months subject to all necessary approvals. Grand opening dates and specific details for each location will be confirmed over the coming months. The Target Distribution Centre in Cornwall employed hundreds of people, trained in logistics, which could help Walmart when it begins to staff its new acquisition. Walmart plans to hire approximately 3,400 new associates in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec and these projects are expected to generate approximately 1,500 trade and construction jobs. Walmart has not said what it will do with its existing distribution centre in Cornwall.

Confrontations with five levels of security His opening words were something like, “It seems WE have a problem here.” He spoke perfect English. He had worked in hotels in Europe and North America – even Toronto. There was a conciliatory tone in his body language and his carefully measured words. Here was a man I believed I could reason
with. “Yes, WE have a problem. I have a bicycle and a hotel room. You have a job to maintain security and enforce rules – no matter how bizarre and unreasonable those rules appear to be.” Can you guess how the struggle over the bicycle was finally resolved? I’ll tell you next week.

After the Mexican (Cuban?) standoff, backup now arrived in the form of the supervisor, a short, stout lady who left no doubt that the rules were to be enforced. Her appearance reminded me of the nursery rhyme “I’m a little teapot, short and stout, tip me up and pour me out.” I guess the simultaneous arrival of her and the little teapot image, a flashback from my days in grade one, made me laugh a little. She took that as if I were flouting her supreme authority. In crisp, well-rehearsed English she repeated what I already knew. “We do not allow bicycles to travel in our elevators nor be taken up to our rooms. It is a rule. It is the law. It has always been so. We have troubles when people bring bicycles to their rooms. We have never allowed bicycles in our hotel rooms!”
In my mind I tried to imagine what troubles can be caused by the bicycles that are never allowed in a guest’s room. My mind conjured a sort of Tour de Cuba being conducted around and around an obstacle course consisting of our two single beds, a night table, a chair and our suitcases. “It is the rule. It has always been so. If you do not obey, I will call the police.” Once again, I crossed my arms over my chest and planted my feet firmly. “Okay, call them!” She disappeared, never to reappear. After about twenty minutes of silence filled with just a tiny whiff of apprehension, I came to the conclusion my bluff just might have worked. I headed for the elevator. My young guard shrugged his shoulders, indicating he still sympathized with me but was caught between a rock and a hard place. As I made my move, yet another performer came on stage, no less a person than the chief of security of the hotel.

Council code of conduct is a lot of window dressing Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
City council is about two steps away from creating and ultimately endorsing a code of conduct for itself. Council put the final touches to the first step in the process Monday night, creating a committee of some of its members and administrators to draft such a code. Their meetings shouldn’t last very long. A previous iteration of city council passed on such a document, but there’s likely a copy kicking around somewhere. The vote on the matter will be fairly anti-climactic…council is going to pass it. The real question is, does council actually need such a document to govern effectively? The short answer is, no. Despite all the rookies around the table, every member of council knows how they should be ‘conducting’ themselves as a member of public office. So let’s call this code what it actually is…window dressing. Coun. Brock Frost campaigned on the idea of a code (though the idea had been discussed long before he took office) and the ink was
barely dry on the 2015 budget, the first major task of this new term, before the what I like to call “pet projects” surfaced. Every councillor has something they want to see done while they’re in office. Or they made a promise during the campaign they have to follow up on. This idea of a code of conduct is Frost’s…and some others. Of course on its surface a code of conduct is a solid idea – create a set of rules that councillors must adhere to while doing their job. But it’s also a lot like “mom” and “apple pie”… those are great ideas too and both deserve our love and support. Where the code falls short, at least in my book, is that the rules contained in such a document are likely to be things councillors should be doing anyway, right? Brampton has a code of conduct for its council. It calls for things like transparency, respect for staff, courtesy during meetings, keeping a lid on confidential material, etc. Am I to assume without this code the poor people of Brampton would have a city council hell-bent on lawlessness and chaos? Probably not…but you see my point. Putting what many of us would simply deem
to be common sense down on paper does not necessarily transfer into good governance. Elected officials are (most of the time) capable of that one their own…or at least they should be. When Cornwall councillors finally get around to endorsing a code of conduct it will be another feather in their municipal cap, something they can show the voters they “did” during their term of office to prove they have the best interests of the electorate at heart. I have no doubt that’s the case anyway, without this exercise. There are already so many rules in place by
way of the provincial ministry of municipal affairs, the Ontario Ombudsman and investigators that can be retained to make sure council is doing its job that a code of conduct. While good on paper, and nice for the city council resume, a code of conduct will do very little to change the way our city is governed. It’s hard to believe that the day, month or year after a code is adopted our city council will suddenly take a giant leap forward. They’re more than capable of such a thing on their own, without a map telling them how to get there. It’s why we elected them in the first place.
does not have a magic wand to solve the province’s multitude of problems. Do you remember when Bob Rae belonged to the NDP and formed a majority government in Ontario from 1990 to 1995? Ontario was a rich province then and Rae, now a Liberal, did little to change things around. The NDP win in Alberta has national leader Tom Mulcair exhibiting a huge smile, which will not last for too long. It will not bolster the federal NDP. Also the election results in oil rich Alberta will not help Prime Minister Stephen Harper or
the national Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. The Liberals in Alberta have only one seat and the mighty Tories became the third party. Much of the NDP win in Alberta is nothing but a protest vote. But, the protest will not dramatically change things around in Alberta. It will make the economy even worse. Notley capitalized on the perfect storm of political conditions to topple the Tory rule. Now begins the real task. Notley will soon found it is not easy to govern when the economy is already in ruins.
Alberta elections a huge surprise The opinion polls were right this time and the Alberta elections not only surprised Albertans but people right across Canada. The New Democratic wave swept across Alberta in a historic win. During the 2012 elections, the majority of polls had predicted the Wild Rose Party would form the majority government. Instead, the Tories returned with a majority. Also in most recent elections in Ontario, all the polls were predicting the end of the Liberal
rule. Exactly the opposite happened. Politics can often be very confusing even for veteran pundits. The main thing is the Tory rule has ended after more than 44 years in power. No one really expected this. The Progressives lost to the NDP in a land of Canada’s deepest and bluest ridings. The results of this election will be felt in Alberta which is big economic problems due to the constantly falling oil prices. The province’s economy is already in ruins. The New Democrat leader Rachel Notley

Liberal decision on utility is short-sighted Dear editor: The Ontario Government’s decision to sell off 60% of Hydro One, the Crown corporation that builds and operates the province’s power grid, is a short-sighted gamble for a one-time cash grab. It is definitely not in the best interests of Ontarians. Privatization will result in higher electricity rates as ratepayers will be responsible for paying for the profit margins of the private companies. Earlier privatizations of the hydro sector since 2002 have already led to the tripling of hydro bills. The provincial government will also lose
annual income from Hydro One, a public monopoly whose profits flow back to the provincial government to support vital public services. When the Mike Harris Conservatives announced plans to privatize Hydro One in 2002, the Liberals were strongly opposed because it would drive up electricity prices. What was a bad idea in 2002 is still a bad idea today. Nor did Premier Wynne campaign on the privatization of Hydro One during the June 12, 2014 election campaign. Brian Lynch, Cornwall, Ont.

Traditional prayer hasn’t a prayer of returning Claude McIntosh
superb industrial commissioner, is the only city administrator to have a street named in his honour - Anderson Drive. ... AROUND AND ABOUT Families are getting smaller and homes are getting bigger. ... Methinks freshly minted Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry NDP candidate Patrick Burger (a headline writer’s gift) is creeping out on a limb with his bold prediction of an NDP victory in October not only in this riding but across the country. The task is pretty simple when it comes to unseating Guy Lauzon - just find a way to take most of the Liberal votes from last election and get about 5,000 Conservative supporters to jump on the bandwagon. ... Funny isn’t it. In the sports world, predicting a victory (except for boxing and rasslin’) is viewed as giving the opposition an advantage. Not so in that blood sport called politics and elections. ... Biggest spectator sport this summer might be the dismantling of the north span of the Seaway International Bridge. CTV and CBC are interested in dispatching television crews to the city when time comes to lower the centre piece of the bridge. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Stuff from the Sixties: Far-out dance crazes included “The Stroll”, “Mashed Potato”, “The Hully Gully”, “The Watusi” and the grand-daddy of them all, “The Twist” made famous by Chubby Checker. Your grand kids will say a “what?” ... A great trivia question is “What is Chubby Checker’s real name?” The Chubby Checker handle was given to him by Dick Clark’s wife. ... The number one song this week in 1967 was “Something Stupid” by Frank Sinatra and his daughter, Nancy. Old Blues had
another Sixties No. 1 hit “Strangers in the Night”. ... The year before, 1966, the Mamas and Papas had the No. 1 hit, “Monday Monday”. ... What ever became of the Singing Nun who had a No. 1 hit with “Dominique”. And who was the “Singing Nun”? ... Dion had a No. 1 hit called “Runaround Sue”. The part about “She took my love and ran around with every guy in town”, always wondered how big was that “town.” ... The No. 1 song with the longest name “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini”. This was one of those songs everyone stood around waiting for the next song, hoping it would be a waltz. IN THE REAR-VIEW PART TWO One of the best local bands from the Sixties was The Ambassadors. All CCVS students. Singer Harry Young went on to have a pretty good run as a singer in the Ottawa area. ... Weren’t many better slow dances at the high school sock hop or Friday nights at the Knights than The Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” or “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”. Put your head back, close your eyes and relive it. ... Wonder how many times David Rose’s naughty instrumental “The Stripper” was played at Christmas office parties after the bar had been open for a couple of hours? The good thing (perhaps) is that it lasted just 1:55 minutes. ... The song you didn’t want to hear the day after being dumped by your girlfriend or boyfriend was “The End of the World” by Skeeter Davis. ... Hard to believe that Fats Domino performed at the old Willow Grove in Massena on a Sunday afternoon in the Sixties. This was a time when his “Blueberry Hill” reached No. 2 on the charts. Conway Twitty did a gig at the old Highland Hotel.

For the first time since anyone can recall, there has been no opening prayer prior to regular Cornwall city council meetings, the result of the Supreme Court of Canada siding with an atheist who complained that a Quebec community council’s opening prayer offended him. Somehow the prayer, read by the mayor, violated his right to deny the existence of God. Here in Cornwall, the reaction to a no-prayer council meeting has been no reaction. There was no bolt of lightning. No shaking of the earth. City hall still stands. Pastor Tom didn’t show up with a placard and bull horn. It can be safely stated that the traditional prayer hasn’t a prayer of returning, albeit a handful of councils are carrying on the tradition ... for now. But this anti-prayer thing might be the start of something much bigger. Will the next complaint be against prayer said at any public event? Will the clergy be muzzled when it comes to saying a prayer at something as public as the Nov. 11 ceremony at a cenotaph? Something that might offend a single atheist. And what about the mention of God in our national anthem. Is that on the atheist hit list? Will the people’s network, the CBC, be obligated to hit the mute button anytime a prayer is said, or God is mentioned? As they say in the TV business, stay tuned. HERE AND THERE One of the tactics used by teachers’ unions in contract battles is
the with-holding of report cards or not adding comments to the report card to be read by parents who take an interest in their kid’s education. Why couldn’t they have done that when I was in school. Of course, in those days we never heard of class sizes, strikes and work to rule by teachers. ... Don’t know about you but if a food product label says it is a product of China, I leave it on the shelf. Heard enough stories about how food is produced in that country. ... CORNWALL, Ontario - Green thumbs got down and dirty at the 10th edition of Bark & Compost Day. The Cornwall & District Horticultural Society (CDHS), also known as Friends of the Garden, hosted the event in partnership with the City of Cornwall at the city’s landfill site on Saturday (May 9). Hundreds flocked to help raise over $5,000, with funds matched by Scotiabank. Final results will be announced in the coming week. Self-described newbie gardeners and Cornwall residents Kyle Beaudette and Chantal LalondeBeaudette picked up several bags for their starter garden. “We’re going to try to start a small edible landscape on our front yard, with herbs and heartier stuff that grows in the sun,” said LalondeBeaudette, who heard about the event at work through Transition Cornwall +. The 33-year-olds put their muscles to work and shovelled their own bags of compost. “It’s hot out and the volunteers are working so hard. It’s an

Shrek hits the stage this month at Holy Trinity Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - What was old is new again at Holy Trinity Secondary School, as teachers and students are preparing for the stage production of Shrek. As many as 80 students are taking part in the play, from actors to set designers and stage hands, that will run from May 21 to 23 at the school. Drama teacher Jim Malyon and music teacher Andrea De Coeur agreed the experiences they had as students, with similar productions, helped instill a sense of pride and fun for students now. “All the teacher here did something similar
to this when they were students,” said De Coeur. “We really see the benefit of this,” continued Malyon. “It’s something we all enjoyed.” Meagan Brodie, who will play Princess Fiona, said jumping into the character was relatively easy. “It was a lot of fun,” she said. “She’s quirky. She’s out there - and that’s exactly who I am.” Tickets for the show are available at the school and cost $10. The shows will take place at 7 p.m. each day, with a 1 p.m. matinee added May 23. Meagan Brodie (Princess Fiona) and Ben Pilon (Lord Farquaad) go over some lines in advance of the Holy Trinity production of Shrek.
Murder can be a funny business Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - Karaoke becomes a vicious game when a grand, grand prize is at stake in the hilarious new murder mystery, Rockin’ With Bernie, a Murder on the Funny Side Theatre Productions production, which will be staged a The Social, later his month. Among the zany characters involved, Inspector Clumso, who started singing karaoke to relieve job stress, is on the case when the contest’s host, Bernie, is murdered. He is joined by Goldie Bullion, a Canadian Idol star who thinks she is a shoe-in for the contest; Lacy Frock, a reporter; Jessica Jetski, a travel agent; Rolly
Dice, a gambler; and Ellie Fisher, an Olympic swimming hopeful, whose career was sidelined after a car accident, and is now a major suspect. A fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society, the evening includes a great selection of hors d’oeuvres, throughout the night, cash bar, plenty of audience participation, and an entertaining show, featuring live karaoke performance by the likes of Elvis, Tracy Chapman, Shirley Bassey, Gloria Gaynor, Miranda Lambert, and Richard Cheese. “This cause is near and dear to my heart because my father passed away from Alzheimer’s,” said Laurie McRae-Bingley, Murder
on the Funny Side, writer and director. “I remember having to get an alarm system for my mother because (my father) would leave in the middle of the night, she said. “My mom was in her 70s, and when I would stay there for a week while she would go on holiday, I was exhausted. I couldn’t imagine how she could do it every day - the hours and the confusion. I don’t think a lot of people understand how difficult it is for the family. They need a lot of support.” The fundraiser will also include a raffle and silent auction with many great items to bid on from Archambault Iron Works, Best Western Parkway Inn, Pommier Jewellers, Gordon
Jewellers, Vital Glow, and many more. “The show is a lot of fun,” said McRae-Bingley. “I have to stress that because I think people get a little nervous that it’s something too serious. I want them to come out and have fun. And I don’t want people to think that we’ll go out and pick on certain people. We know who doesn’t mind; we can tell. We want everyone to have a good time.” Rockin’With Bernie fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society, will be held on Saturday, May 23, at The Social Conference and Event Centre, 130 Sydney Street. Cornwall ‘forest’ contains some 800 trees and shrubs Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - A parcel of land in north Cornwall has been donated to a local conservation authority, with designs on turning it into a forest. The Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) is receiving 1.1 hectares, now known as the Gambhir Memorial Forest - donated by Dr. Indu Gambhir, a long-time doctor in Cornwall. Prior to acquiring the land, the RRCA assisted in the restoration of the property and planted approximately 800 native trees and shrubs in 2012. The trees were planted in partnership
with Gambhir and students from Eamer’s Corners Public School. The restoration and protection of the property was inspired by the vision of her late husband, Raj Gambhir. “We are very grateful for this land donation that we may use as an outdoor classroom,” said Roger Houde, RRCA General Manager. “Students will learn about the important role trees play in urban areas.” A ceremonial tree planting took place Tuesday to mark the transition. The Gambhir Memorial Forest is located at the northeast side of Pitt Street and Highway 401 intersection.
The RRCA’s Norm Genier, a forestry specialist, discusses the Gambhir Memorial Forest.

GEORGE CHUVALO: Boxing has nothing to fear from mixed martial arts Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Canada’s toughest boxer has a message for those who thinks the squared circle will one day be eclipsed by the octagon: he’s not impressed. George Chuvalo, in an interview Friday night prior to offering the keynote address at Saturday’s Boxing for Change event, held at Nav Centre to benefit the Children’s Treatment Centre, said the hype and success of mixed martial arts lacks the art of his sport. “When I watch the UFC I get bored,” Chuvalo said. “They kind of look at each other and then they start grappling and go for the legs, and they stay there. “It’s not exciting to get guys in a hold. You don’t see much movement. There’s not much science to it. It doesn’t excite me. When I watch it I am looking for action. But there’s no action.” Chuvalo may know a little baout what he’s talking about. He was ranked number four on ESPN’s greatest chin in boxing history list (having never been knocked down or knocked out as an amateur or professional boxer). Chuvalo fought as a heavyweight during the
1960s and 70s and was a five-time Canadian heavyweight champion, and two-time world heavyweight title challenger. Chuvalo lost to heavyweight legends such as Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman. Ali has often cited Chuvalo as his most fearsome opponent. Today Chuvalo spends a lot of time mentoring young fighters. He spent time Friday talking with Cornwall’s Tony Luis, the WBC Continental Americas Lightweight champ. “I feel for them. I can identify with them and I wish them all the best,” said Chuvalo. “I hope I can be some good to them in terms of advice.” Luis said that is exactly what he was seeking from Chuvalo when they spoke. It’s an honour to pick his brain...to get his opinion on similar experiences that may be I am going through in my career,” said Luis. Like? “I asked him how hard it was for him when he had to walk away from the sport, and how it affected him mentally,” Luis answered. From left are Jorge Luis, George Chuvalo and Tony Luis. Does that mean the Cornwall pugilist is considering hanging up the gloves. Indeed. Luis will fight June 26 in Niagara 1 record and six knockouts. “Not anytime soon. No, no, no,” he said with Falls, N.Y. at Seneca Casino. He is scheduled to He’s also been KO’d five times. CORNWALL, Ontario – After striking gold at the 2015 Youth Bowling Council (YBC) national tournament, Sophia Dorie is changing lanes. The victory marks the end of the 11-yearold’s successful run with fellow Olympia Bowl bantam girls teammates (who represented southern Ontario): Amy Wang, Savannah Ingola and Brianna Lauzon. “It feels so good to reclaim our title,” Dorie said at the Olympia Bowl YBC awards banquet in Cornwall on Saturday (May 8). The foursome’s main competition this year sent them home with silver in 2014. “We knew our very first game against Quebec was the match we needed to win to set us apart - and we did,” said Coach Paul Legault. Of the 21 matches played against seven provinces, the girls boasted a 12-game winning streak and only three losses overall. “We won the title the old-fashioned way:

Basic strategies to proper putting
6201045
The average golfer could easily make up 10 strokes a ROUND by putting properly. This one point makes proper putting perhaps the most important part of any player’s game. And since most of us are not able to get onto the links anyway because of the winter weather, putting is something you can practice at home. There’s an old adage that the game of golf should be learned from the green back to the tee. That means putting, chipping, fairway shots, and THEN drives. Remember, most shots in a round are from around the green or on the green itself. It’s not uncommon for some players to take as many (and often more) shots while on the green as they did to get to the green. Putting is paramount to a solid game. The average golfer’s tendency, when putting, is to use too much of their wrists and arms, thus breaking down their wrists through the putt. This is wrong and is the main culprit for poor putting. Do not break your wrists when putting! Why? Because as soon as you do, you lose control. That wobbly wrist action is transmitted down to the putter face and the ball will go just about anywhere when contact is made.

Bend your knees slightly, and hang your arms over the ball. Shift your weight slightly forward on your left foot, favoring the left side of your body. Your hands should also be slightly forward in your stance. Before making your stroke, make sure your arms, shoulders, knees and feet are all parallel with your target line. Notice I said target line. This doesn’t mean the hole but rather the path that the ball needs to travel in order to get to the hole. Keep all these elements intact, and you should see improved putting in no time. There is a standard rule of thumb for putting that usually works, but depends on the terrain, so adjust accordingly. For a five foot putt, bring your putter back five inches, and then follow through five inches. Why do most putts miss? Because the stance and the putter head are NOT square to the target line. With putting, this issue of being square cannot be overstated. It’s vital that you get comfortable with being squared up on putts. Keep your

Anywhere except where you want to go, that is. To become a great putter, the perfect combination of shoulders and arms should be used throughout the entire putt. Any wrist action involved is through the motion of the weight of the putter. In other words, it’s a natural motion, not a break. During your putt, concentrate on your shoulders. On the backswing, your left shoulder naturally moves down and your right shoulder naturally moves up, like a pendulum. When you focus on your shoulders as if they were a clock works, your backswing becomes fluid. Your left wrist should stay nice and firm throughout this motion. In order to set up the putting grip, first place the grip in the palm of your left hand, and your entire hand around the grip. Place your right hand underneath your left, in a similar palm grip. Now, overlap your right hand with your left index finger. Your palms should be opposite to one another, for a nice locked-in feeling. When setting up to address the ball, make sure your eyes are over the ball, specifically your left eye (if you are a right hand golfer).
shape. Read on for some pointers to help ensure your summer is pain and injury free: • Take it slow. You’ll have to work up to that Wimbledon-style tennis match, or the Olympic gold medal for track and field. Now’s the time to begin some regular exercise to ease into your favourite spring and summer sports. Try some easy jogging, indoor swimming, and daily stretching to start. Always stretch before and after each activity. Ask your chiropractor about a regular routine of exercise that’s best for you. • Use the right equipment. Adults and children should always wear helmets for biking, and sun protection – a hat and sunscreen – is a must. So is good footwear. The right shoes will give you balance, support, and protection. • Eat well. Make healthy eating part of your daily routine. Include at least eight glasses of water a day (beer and coffee don’t count!). When you’re active, make sure you have lots of water or sports drinks to replenish your body’s fluids, especially in warmer weather.

Practice first with short swings then full swings: Start with putting to establish rhythm and tempo. Chipping and pitching also require a lot of feel and tempo and therefore are another great place to start practicing. Think of these shots as a miniature full swing, which will allow you to make a smoother transition to a correct full swing. Once you move to the full swing, make sure your grip, posture and setup are correct. I like to think of these three areas as the engine that starts the golf swing. Without the grip, posture and setup being correct, it becomes almost impossible to swing the club correctly and to get consistent results.

How to protect against floods in your home the health problems from the mold and mildew caused by the water damage. “Flooding events often go undetected for hours causing extensive damage to your home and personal belongings,” said Patrice De Luca, vice president of marketing and business development for Reliance Protectron Security Services, a leader in home security services who offer, among their suite of products and services, affordable solutions to help thwart the threat of water damage. According to De Luca today’s security systems are capable of monitoring much more
than just intrusion detection devices like motion detectors, door/window contacts and glassbreaks. Flood sensors, water flow switches, temperature sensors and many other devices can be installed and linked to a remote monitoring centre that protects homes 24 hours a day to help minimize and, if detected early enough (like for a sump pump with a high water level sensor), prevent losses due to environmental factors with specially trained professional operators standing by and
dispatching appropriate emergency services if required. De Luca says “the latest technology in security systems (when monitored by a professional monitoring centre) can even allow for the monitoring and detection of water damage in your home from a distance by wireless transmission (TeleGARD) on your cell phone or PC at work for example.” More information on protecting your home while you’re away is available online at www.protectron.com.

Over the years most homeowners can expect to experience at least one form of water damage to their home. It could be their washing machine hose that splits, their pipes that freeze and burst, the dishwasher that leaks, toilet that overflows, or water heater that fails. Any one of these conditions can lead to expensive property damage, and destruction of personal belongings such as photographs, furniture or computer data – items that are often irreplaceable. According to the Insurance Information Institute, more than seven times as many insurance claims are caused by water damage and freezing (17 per cent) than by theft (2 per cent). Of those water related claims, 60 per cent were caused by faulty indoor appliances or plumbing leaks, 25 per cent were caused by heavy rain or flooding and 11 per cent caused by sewers or sump-pumps that overflowed. Preventing a water leak from causing extensive damage is even more crucial now with the trend towards homeowners investing thousands of dollars in their basements creating home theatres, play rooms, guest rooms and laundry rooms. These flooding events can lead to several inconveniences and unexpected costs such as having to relocate while the problem is cleaned up (in severe cases), having to replace damaged items and most importantly dealing with

Lalonde adds new title: OCSTA Regional Director Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - After nine years on the job, the vice-chair of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario is expanding his knowledge on the distinctive needs, as well as the accomplishments of local students in a new leadership role. CDSBEO Trustee Todd Lalonde was acclaimed as Ontario Catholic School Trustees’
Association Regional Director for Region 10 at the association’s annual general meeting in Toronto on May 1. “I am very honoured and excited to take on this new role,” said Lalonde. Region 10 includes the CDSBEO, the Algonquin and Lakeshore CDSB, and Renfrew County CDSB. The CDSBEO operates 40 elementary and 10 secondary schools across eight counties, serv-
ing 12,900 students. Established 85 years ago, OCSTA’s mandate is “to promote and protect Catholic education.” According to the media statement announcing Lalonde’s new appointment issued on Wednesday (May 6), the foundation for that work is established at its AGM. The association is managed by a board of directors consisting of a president, a vicepresident, a past president and 15 additional
trustees elected from 12 regions. Catholic district school board trustees in Region 10 are encouraged to contact Lalonde “to make them aware of issues that might be brought forward to the full board of directors,” which meet five times per year. “I hope to expand my knowledge further, and help to enrich the experience of Catholic education for all students across Ontario,” he said.

*Dad’s Reply.... (also by texting)...* My Dear Lilly: Like, Wow! Really? Cool! AWESOME! Whatever... I suggest you two get married on Twitter, have fun on Tango, buy your kids on Amazon, and pay for it all through Paypal. And when you get fed up with this new husband, sell him on Ebay! L.O.L. * Text Message from Daughter to Dad...* Daddy, I am coming home to get married, soon. So, get out your checkbook. LOL :>) I’m in love with a boy who is far away from me. I am in Australia, and he lives in Scotland. We met on a dating website, became friends on Facebook, had long chats on Whatsapp, he proposed to me on Skype, and now we’ve had two months of relationship through Viber. My beloved and favorite Dad, I need your blessing, good wishes, and a really big wedding. Lots of love and thank you sooooo much!, Your favorite daughter, Lilly
