ROCKET MEN: Collecting pieces of missing stunt car that plunged into the St. Lawrence River CORNWALL, Ontario - A pair of men are hoping to put together the pieces of a puzzle that connects the present to a bizarre stunt from the past that dazzled some and confused others. Cody Glive and Andrew Whitton are stockpiling a small collection of relics from the failed attempt by Ken Powers in 1979 to jump the St. Lawrence River in a rocket-powered Lincoln Continental near Morrisburg and land on Ogden Island, in the United States. The men have managed to collect pieces of the wrecked car that was designed to make the leap from Canada to the U.S. They want more. “We are searching for the car,” said Whitton. “We’re trying to collect as much as we can.” Glive said ultimately the duo would settle for collecting the pieces to build some kind of tribute to the spectacle. “We’d like to display it somewhere,” he said. The stunt was an unmitigated failure. The car disintegrated after barely leaving an 85-foot ramp built years before the jump actually took place. Powers was replacing Canadian Ken Carter who had initially planned to complete the jump in a rocket-powered Lincoln Continental. Financial problems plagued the stunt, and there have even been rumours that organized crime played a role in financing and forcing the stunt to be completed.

The failed stunt effectively bankrupted Carter, who was killed years later in a doomed jump in Peterborough that saw another rocket-powered car sail past its intended landing spot and land on its roof, crushing the ‘Mad Canadian.’ Glive and Whitton have laid claim to one of the wings from the Lincoln that was destroyed in Morrisburg, as well as assorted pieces of fiberglass from the car that still show the effects of the jump. The fibreglass appears to have been shredded in places by the cables that connected the parachutes to the car. Both men said scavengers who watched the jump grabbed what they could when pieces of the car washed ashore. The car itself was stored near Morrisburg after the jump, but has since gone missing. They were able to get the parts by calling people who lived in and around Morrisburg and had storied them in basements and sheds. “We used to go up there to pick apples,” Whitton said of the jump area. “For years we would drive by that ramp.” The ramp, and condition of the track leading to it, sealed the fate of the car and Ken Powers in 1979, the date of the jump. Many winters had created bumps and undulations in the track that sent the car bouncing towards the ramp, instead of smoothly accelerating. “The bumps in the runway...tore apart the fibreglass body,” Glive wrote in an online report on the subject. “Powers, who was shorter than Carter,

Cody Glive and Andrew Whitton show off some of the pieces of the destroyed rocketpowered Lincoln Continental, as well as other memorabilia, from the failed 1979 attempt to jump the St. Lawrence River. was thrown around in the cockpit and was unable to keep his foot on the accelerator. “As a result the car, which was supposed to leave the ramp at 270MPH, was only going 180MPH. When the car left the end of the ramp, the wind caught the fibreglass body, taking away all momentum generated by the rocket thrust. The cracked body work deployed the parachutes ahead of schedule and the car sailed only 506 feet into the shallow waters of the Canadian shoreline. The car was destroyed. Powers had broken his back, but survived.” After the financiers of the stunt defaulted on

paying local construction companies, the ramp soil was sold off as fill, and the steel beams salvaged. A Facebook group has been created by Glive to pay tribute to the event, and serve as a place for people to contact he and Whitton with information on the stunt. The men were heartened to learn that another stuntman, Mike Hughes, had planned a similar jump of the river this year. But this winter Hughes had to pull the plug when he could no longer provide assurances that he could get the proper permits, liability coverage and logistics.

Baby caught from second-storey window, mom jumps jumped from the second storey, severely injuring her knee in the process. “We were just sitting on the couch talking and I could smell smoke,” said Gauthier. “I went into the kitchen and saw flames at my door.” Gauthier said with access to the front door blocked, the apartment began to fill with thick acrid smoke. “Panic-mode kicked in,” she said. After Mole jumped from the window Gauthier hung her son outside to keep his tiny lungs away from the smoke. At first she wasn’t even sure help was out there. But mercifully help was reaching up to save mother and son.

“Cameron was there, and he was telling me everything was going to be ok,” she said. Bennett, his friend Zach Avery and Cory Dwyer helped usher Gauthier and her son from the house while it was on fire. “This guy (Dwyer) helped boost me up on to the roof above the front door,” said Bennett. “She had her baby out the window, because of the smoke. I had to lean up and I grabbed the baby. “I was trying to help her, but she was really freaking out.” Once the baby was safe Gauthier jumped from the window. Gauthier has an injured back, but Mole is expected to undergo surgery. Riley was not injured.

“She’s really bruised. She’s on crutches right now,” Tammy Turbide said of her daughter Gauthier. “They lost everything.” A fundraiser has been launched online and can be found here. Bennett said Avery was helping Mole who had jumped, trying to get her across the street before she laid down in the grass. “We were going so fast,” said Bennett. “We thought there might be an explosion.” Gauthier said Bennett and the others are heroes. “I don’t have words to express how grateful I am,” she said. “They saved mine and my child’s life.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - It was high drama during a late-night fire Monday on Larin Avenue in Cornwall that saw a woman hang her infant son from a second-storey window, before leaping to the ground to escape the flames. The fire has left Michaela Gauthier and her son Riley with nothing. They escaped the flames after some local men heard screams from the burning apartment complex and rushed in to help. Gauthier had to literally hang her infant son from a second-storey window into the waiting arms of passerby Cameron Bennett, who grabbed him and kept him safe. This was before her friend, Lark Mole, had

CORNWALL, Ontario - Instead of running after bad guys, Cornwall police chased a common goal: raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics. Nearly 80 people marched through city streets as the ‘Flame of Hope’ blazed, marking the end of Police Week on Friday (May 15). The annual Torch Run hosted by the Cornwall Community Police Service began at its east-end station on Montreal Road and worked its way to Baxtrom’s Independent on Ninth Street. Nearly 40 students from the Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School’s System

Designated Class, 25 CCPS officers, and 15 teachers and teacher aides participated. Alex Coteau, 17, has made the trek many times during the event’s nearly 25-year run. “Meeting new people – that’s what I like the most about the Torch Run,” said Coteau. Along the route, participants armed with collection pails collected over $2,000. All the proceeds go to Special Olympics Ontario to help provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. “We made a lot of noise throughout the community,” said CCPS Sgt. Bryan Snyder. “The people in Cornwall were very generous – just like always.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Alexander Lazore is only 14 months old, but he’s already in for the fight of his life. The little Cornwall fellow, just weeks ago, was diagnosed with a stage four brain tumour. Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario nearly lost him, on April 23, when the pressure in his tiny head became so intense that he stopped breathing. They were able to revive him, and on the next day performed a surgery that saw 60 per cent of the orange-sized mass removed from the back of his head. But he is far from out of the woods. His mother, Britney Truelove, said in an interview the balance of the tumour that had to be left inside her son can only be treated with radiation and chemo therapy. So at barely more than year old, little Alexander will have to undergo daily radiation

treatments for the next six weeks, in addition to regular chemotherapy. “They usually don’t do chemo when they’re less than three years old,” said Truelove. “But this is his only chance.” Doctors were forced to leave a large portion of the tumour because it is so close to his brain stem and spinal cord that his quality of life, and chances of survival, could have been compromised. Truelove said last month she noticed that her son appeared to have a slight kink in his neck. He was otherwise developing just fine and was a normal, happy baby. But doctors quickly discovered that he was a very sick little fellow. The official diagnosis is anaplastic astrocytoma, a type of brain cancer that can be very aggressive. Truelove is hoping for the best. “It’s hard. We never saw this coming,” she said. Truelove and Alexander are staying at the

Former city gas station site, contaminated with toxins, subject of MOE focus Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The former home of a Cornwall gas station, now contaminated after years of fuel storage, is being monitored to ensure the toxins aren’t leaking into neighbouring properties. The Ministry of the Environment is keeping an eye on the site at the southwest corner of Second and York streets in Cornwall that is contaminated with hydrocarbons and toluene - the latter of which is a colourless, water-insoluble liquid with the smell of paint thinners. The worry is that the contaminants could spread to nearby private properties, as well as city-owned land. “In 2013, during an inspection at the site, the ministry identified potential concerns with the condition of the site,”said Mike Seguin, a supervisor with the local office of the Ministry of the Environment. At one point the property was the site of a Gulf gas station but has been vacant since the early 1990s. It is owned by Suncor today. “We required the owner, Suncor, to undertake work at the site to assess the site and identify any contaminants present,” said Seguin. “Suncor conducted soil and groundwater sampling at the site that confirmed contaminants such as hydrocarbons and toluene that are typically associated with fuel.”

Erin Rees, a spokesperson from Suncor, confirmed the company is monitoring the site. “We are working closely with the Ministry of the Environment and adjacent property owners,” she said. “We continue to investigate and monitor the area and will take necessary steps based on those findings.” The ministry has told Suncor to continue monitoring the site to make sure contaminants aren’t spreading. “The ministry will review this work to make sure any contaminants that are migrating from the site are identified and addressed to make sure the surrounding community and environment are protected,”said Seguin.“Monitoring work done to date has shown contamination in soils and groundwater at the site typically associated with fuel dispensing facilities.

ALLERGY ARMAGEDDON: Worst season ever for people who sniffle through spring Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - If you’re sneezing more often than normal this year, or your eyes feel like they’re running off your face there’s a good reason. WORST. ALLERGY. SEASON. EVER. Thanks to a snowy winter and a delayed start to spring, Mother Nature is hitting us with a mixed bag of allergens all at once.

This year it seems everyone is getting into the act all at once. “It’s not unexpected,” said local medical officer of health Paul Roumeliotis. “Whenever we have a situation where it goes from cold to hot quickly, you get increased pollenization at the same time.” No kidding. While April was cold and generally miserable, there have been some beautiful May days that have trees exploding with microscopic pollen that is plaguing areas sinuses.

“At this time of year it’s the tree pollens that are the culprit,” said Roumeltiotis. Typically trees like oak and birch release their pollen first, and next comes ash and poplar, while grass gets into the act during the dog days of summer. Ragweed follows in the fall. Roumeliotis urged people to use allergy medication when necessary, increase the use of puffers if they have asthma or COPD, and keep windows closed in the morning when pollen is most active.

The Globe and Mail reported that a 2010 survey from pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson, shows that more than eight million Canadians have an allergy with symptoms of one kind or another – coughing, constant sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose. “It can feel like a cold that never goes away,” said Roumeliotis. Allergies are created when the body’s immune system releases histamine to respond to incoming pollen, leading to the cold-like symptoms.

College bursary boost for students Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Team Cornwall is investing in future community leaders. The ambassadorial group is accepting applications for three youth volunteer bursaries of $1,500 (sponsored by Kawartha Credit Union) for Cornwall graduating students interested in pursuing or accepted into a university or college post-secondary program. “We have some extraordinary youth in our community and our bursaries seek to recognize their efforts in making Cornwall a great place to be,” said Team Cornwall chair Peter Gault. A committee will review nominations for the youth community volunteer bursaries. Deadline for submission is June 5. Nomination package forms

PETER GAULT

are available online: teamcornwall.com/wp/ docs/Team-CornwallYouth-Volunteer-Bursary. pdf. Gault said the initiative began 14 years ago, and was originally spearheaded by longtime team member Andre Pommier of Pommier

Jewellers. In addition, there are six Team Cornwall high school bursaries of $400 being awarded to one graduating student pursuing further education from: St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, École secondaire catholique La Citadelle, Cornwall Collegiate and

Vocational School, École secondaire publique L’Heritage, and St. Lawrence Secondary School. This year, the bursaries were doubled from $200. Each one has its own criteria and selection process. “This will help people focus on that next level of education, which I think is really important to the Cornwall community at large, and also highlighting the city’s next generation of ambassadors,” he said. The Team Cornwall-SLC Community Award is also up for grabs. This accolade is issued annually to an entrance student enrolled full-time in any program on the Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College. Hopefuls must demonstrate above average academic achievement and contribution to community service, and be residents of the City of Cornwall or the United Counties of Stormont,

Dundas & Glengarry. Applications are made directly to the college (www.stlawrencecollege.ca). Team Cornwall has over 400 members, and international appeal thanks to its approach to spreading the good word about living, working, and doing business in the city with their popular business cards (that look more like hockey cards). Gault added: “We also have a youth ring, and we’ve combined that back with Team Cornwall to re-focus on its initiatives. We have a group that worked with the bursaries originally called Teen Cornwall, and they are still there in presence. This is our way to demonstrate to teenagers that Team Cornwall think they’re important and we’re trying to incorporate them into our group as they become local ambassadors.” For more information visit, teamcornwall.com.

HEART TO HEART: Mother of youngster with heart defect rallies to support CHEO Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Long Sault woman and her daughter know first-hand what life is like when you have to lean on doctors for help. Heidi Roy (Van De Glind) is organizing a fundraiser later this month to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, specifically a cardio pulmonary bypass machine to replace an aged piece of equipment that helps young ones

HEIDI ROY

breathe and circulate blood while their heart is operated on. Roy and her daughter Aliya have benefitted from the machine and the doctors who used it for the little girl who was born with a congenital heart defect. She has undergone

multiple heart surgeries to correct what is known as a transposition of the great vessels, where the two major vessels that carry blood away from the heart - the aorta and the pulmonary artery - are reversed. Roy is quick to point out that the fundraiser is not for her daughter, and creating awareness around heart defects is likewise not a way to shine a spotlight on her family. “She’s just one example for this fundraiser,” said Roy. “She’s not THE reason.”

The South Stormont Community Fundraiser for CHEO takes place May 30. A slew of activities are planned, including the South Stormont Amazing Race (9 a.m. to noon), a softball tournament (11 a.m.) and children’s activities at the South Stormont Arena (1 to 4 p.m.). All the details on the fundraiser can be found on a Facebook page created for the event. “CHEO was absolutely incredible for us,” said Roy. “Not only the medical staff, but all the people. We never had an issue.”

he explained. Taking advantage of the program, which he learned about through a Union Gas community service partner, was a painless process for the homeowner. After meeting the Home Weatherization Program’s eligibility criteria, he was put in touch with an authorized Union Gas contractor “They got the ball rolling,” said Paul. An energy assessment of his house was scheduled, and a certified energy adviser confi rmed that the attic, exterior walls and basement of his home were under-insulated.

Gardening lessons from developing countries (NC)—Any gardener in Canada can share at least one story of challenge and triumph when trying to grow their favourite vegetable. In Africa, Asia, and South America, families who plant essential food items are constantly challenged by the harshest of climates, a lack of water, and the most basic harvesting tools. Yet, they have learned to be innovative and creative with their knowledge and resources.

Lessons Canadian gardeners can learn from those who plant in developing countries are: •Diversify by planting different varieties. In drought and pest-prone climates people know not to put all their eggs in one basket. You may love tomatoes but if they don’t come in as well as you hoped, then you can enjoy a back up harvest of cucumbers or peppers. •Share your expertise with a neighbour. Those who plant in the developing world

share their know-how and understanding with their community for all to benefit. Talk with your neighbors to get gardening tips. Implementing their gardening secrets will help your garden flourish. •Get to know your environment. Your soil may not be appropriate for all types of seeds. Take a cup of soil and study the particles you find in it. Is there clay, sand, gravel, and organic material? Find out what would grow best in the type of soil you have in your garden.

•Remember to share the fruits of your labour. If you are blessed with an abundance of vegetables and fruits, don’t create waste – share with friends, neighbours, and local food banks who accept fresh goods. You can also provide nutritious food to families in developing countries by purchasing vegetable garden seeds for $15, fruit trees for $20, or garden tools for $50 at www.ccfcanada.ca/ Gifts. Make a difference to children and families living in poverty.

ORGANIZED CHAOS: New shades of Blais Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Alyssa Blais didn’t expect her first collection of tiny mixed media paintings to be her big launch into the art world. She may be best known as the executive director for the Agape Centre, founder of Politigal (an initiative encouraging women to join politics), and a close-finishing candidate in the 2014 municipal election. But after the feedback circulates from her debut exhibition Organized Chaos in Cornwall at author-artist Joan Levy-Earle’s private studio (Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16), talented artist will surely add to that list. “It’s a fun way to decompress and for people to see another side of me,” said Blais. She discovered art journaling - a blend of words, sketches, and occasionally mixed media elements such as collages - in 2014 as a way to relax from her day job. After watching online tutorials, she quickly began working on canvas using paper, acrylic,

pen, watercolour, stamps, stencils, and water. Blais describes her process as largely spontaneous, and prefers mixed media as an art form because of its versatility, ease and absence of rigidity. Each piece (4x4” or 4x5” or 5x7”) starts with a base of paper, then roughly six layers of paint are added, a series of stamps and letters follow (usually vintage prints and old music sheets), and then more paint is smeared on. Without the drying time, each portrait takes about three hours to complete. “There’s a really ugly phase that happens, but what comes out is something very unique,” she said. The beauty surfaces when Blais finishes with sketches of flowers, women, and animals. This transformation is the inspiration behind the show’s title. After originally showing some pieces to LevyEarle (Blais’s mother-in-law), she was encouraged to share her artwork with the public. “And it just kind of snowballed from there,” said Blais.

Cornwall’s Alyssa Blais at her first art show Organized Chaos held at the private studio of author-artist Joan Levy-Earle on Saturday, May 16, 2015. Adam Brazeau when you don’t become a city councillor, you’ve got to put your energy into something else,” she laughed. Blais had sold 50 of her pieces during the two-day showing, and says this is just the beginning. “I’m still young and I’ve still got a lot in me,” she added. For more information, visit alyssablais.ca and joanlevyearle.com.

Two more shows are already lined up. Fifteen paintings will be on display at the After Stonewall Gallery on 370 Bank Street in Ottawa from 6-8 p.m. on June 3. Blais and Levy-Earle (at her studio located at the back of the 812 Pitt Street shopping plaza) will also be participating in the Apples and Art tour happening across SDG on September 26-27. “Bernadette (Clemente) dropped by the show and I was telling her – this is what happens

OPINION

Apartment-climbing heroes don’t grow on trees Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Whoever writes the media releases for the Cornwall Fire Department needs a lesson in drama. Of course I’m teasing just a bit, but in the 12 or so lines from the fire department Tuesday morning, we got all the facts concerning Monday night’s fire on Larin Avenue that nearly cost a handful of people their lives. But that’s all we got…the who, what, where and when (the ‘how’ is still under investigation), including the exact time of the blaze, the number of firefighters on the scene and whatnot. Yawn. The most important details of Monday night’s spectacle were missing…you know, the part about a trio of Cornwall men getting elevated to hero status as a city mom, her son and her friend leapt from a burning building with their lives hanging in the balance. With all due respect to the good work done by the fire department in extinguishing the blaze (hat tip to firefighters everywhere) the other stuff has got people talking today. In a scene right out of the movies, Michaela Gauthier and her friend Lark Mole JUMPED from the second-storey of Gauthier’s Larin Avenue apartment while the place was con-

sumed by flames and smoke. Fortunately Cameron Bennett, his buddy Zach Avery and Cory Dwyer were close by at 11 p.m. Monday when the fire broke out. Dwyer helped Bennett scale to the top of a small roof above the building’s front door, where the young man snatched baby Riley from Gauthier’s outstretched hands. Gauthier told me that she wasn’t sure, at first, if anyone was around to help at such a late hour, and there was no way she’d be able to make it out the front door of her apartment, as it was completely blocked by fire and smoke. “They saved our lives,” she said of the three men. No kidding. Things were so bad that Mole had already jumped from the second-storey, shattering her knee in the process. In a panic, after Riley had been saved, Gauthier jumped as well. In an interview with me Bennett lamented the fact that he couldn’t help Gauthier, who landed on the ground, injuring her back. Hey kid, you can’t win ‘em all, but you did a helluva job. We often read about these stories, but (thankfully?) they seem to happen in other cities and communities. That wasn’t the case Monday night, and

Green party leader’s comments in poor taste Green Party leader Elizabeth May’s lengthy, profanity-laced speech at the annual parliamentary press gallery dinner in Gatineau, Que. was in poor taste. It is as simple as that. Prior to this, I had some respect for American-born Canadian environmentalist and politician and MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands in British Columbia. May was clearly not acting like herself at the dinner. Some reports suggest she was too tired, not feeling well and perhaps had a few more drinks than she could handle. May has apologized for use of partisan putdowns and the “f-bomb” during the well attended and well publicized speech at the

dinner. It is strange she said her apology is specially directed to constituents in her Saanich-Gulf Islands riding. What about the rest of Canada? With the federal election scheduled for mid October, May needs to get re-elected and therefore sad sorry to her constituents. Don’t forget she is the leader of the Green Party of Canada. “The people I care about the most in the world are my constituents and their opinion matters the most to me,” she said. “I hold myself to a very high standard of respectful discourse and standard of behavior in Parliament.” Of course she realizes she needs full support of her constituents to get re-elected. Her apology is not at all an apology.

Dear editor, for 10 years, Stephen Harper has been ignoring the people who do most of the heavy lifting in our economy. Those who work longer and longer hours for an ever shrinking piece of the pie, and less and less financial security. Middle class Canadians need to have money in their pockets to save, invest and grow the economy – to bring fairness and to strengthen the heart of the Canadian economy. But Mr. Harper’s unfair system has been giving money to those who need it least. The Liberal Party has a better, fairer plan: we will give a tax cut to the middle class and provide middle class families with more money to raise their kids. Our plan will make the tax system fairer and cut the middle class tax rate from 22 percent to 20.5 percent. We will ask the wealthiest Canadians – those in the top one percent of incomes – to pay a little more so the middle class can pay less.

This tax relief is worth up to $670 per year, per person, or $1,340 per year for a two-income household. We will also provide one bigger, fair, tax-free, monthly cheque to help middle class and low-income families with the high costs of raising kids. A typical two-parent family, with two kids, earning $90,000 per year will get $490 tax-free every month. Under Mr. Harper, the same family only receives around $275 after-tax. Over a year, that’s $2,500 more help, taxfree. We will also provide more help to lower-income families. All families in the middle class, and those hoping to join it, will receive more in monthly child benefits than under Mr. Harper’s system. That is 9 out of every 10 families. Liberals will continue to present solutions to grow the economy. Our plan will put more money in the pockets of the middle class and those working hard to join it. Justin Trudeau, Liberal Party of Canada

men whom you’ve never heard of before have become the talk of the town…and a local mom, her son and her friend are counting their blessings. “We were living a good life,” Gauthier told me. “Then, all of a sudden, my apartment is on fire.” We’ve all got things we take for granted family, friends and even our possessions. thank god for Bennett, Avery and Dwyer, who rushed towards a burning building, instead of away from it…not unlike firefighters. They are heroes, in every sense of the word, because if Bennett and company had not been in the right place, at the right time, I’m sure we would be talking about something much worse today. This should also serve as a reminder of how fragile our every-day lives are. As I write this, it has been barely 12 hours since the fire. But in that time three Cornwall

Ex-Royal is now listed as one of the most wealthy men in the U.S. hockey career started and ended in the East Coast Hockey League, finishing with the Johnstown Chiefs of Slapshot fame. He started out on the path to the financial big leagues by establishing a company called Web Group. Within four years it had grown from one employee, Stromback, to 90 with $10 million in annual sales. That is a phenomenal 1,400% compounded growth. Stromback used his money to finance the start-up of Web Group. He was on his way to becoming a billionaire. Funny how things work out. Stromback left his Michigan home, and family, for Canada wh en he was 17 to chase a hockey dream. He got a $30 a week allowance in junior and never made more than $500 a week during his brief tenure in pro hockey’s purgatory. Then he gets this idea of starting up a high tech outfit. Ah, capitalism at its best. Meanwhile, the rest of us buy lottery tickets and light a candle. One of the best radio voices to come out of Cornwall died last week in Halifax. Ron Roberts launched his radio career in the late 1940s with his hometown station, CKSF. (The SF stood for Standard-Freeholder which owned the station that was next door to the newspaper office.) Ron grew up on Third Street West, just a hop, step and jump from Memorial Park. We were neighbours, albeit he was a few years older. After leaving CKSF, Ron worked for a couple of major stations: CFRA in Ottawa (Fred Davis was part of the on-air staff) and CJAD in Montreal along with big out fit in Syracuse, N.Y. These were the radio heydays. Many DJs, as they were called, were more popular

Others included The Ronettes (Be My Baby), Ronnie Dove (One Kiss for Old Time’s Sake and Right or Wrong), Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels (Devil with a Blue Dress On and Jenny Take a Ride) and the Knickerbockers (Lies), The Knickerbockers became regulars on Dick Clark’s TV teen dance show. He didn’t play at the Willow (remember Dick the doorman who looked like a marine drill sergeant) but Conway Twitty had a run at the old Highland Hotel. One Friday night a group from Cornwall Collegiate (drinking age was 18 in New York State) got talking to Twitty during a break about a big football game coming up on Wednesday against cross-town rival St. Lawrence. The singer mentioned that he might take a ride across to border for a look at the game. Of course, nobody expected him to show up. But, shortly after the game started, guess who pulled into the Athletic Grounds on a Harley? Another frequent entertainer at the Highland (think it has morphed into a nursing home) was comedian Doc Circe (and his All-Star Review). He was the prince of vulgarity. Downright (for the time) fility. But oh so funny. Odd thing is, Circe never used the F word. He often played Larry Moquin’s club in Montreal and Just in case you have been staying awake nights trying to think of his real name, in real life Chubby Checker was Ernest Evans. And Conway Twitty? He was Harold Lloyd Jenkins.

In July 2004 he sent me a neatly typed letter. He had just read one of my “Looking Back” columns, sent to him by a Cornwall relative, and as he put it, “I was immediately transported back to my misspent youth (in Cornwall.” We had mentioned the days when a car with a loud speaker on the roof would meander the city streets blasting out announcements. Ron noted that he got his start in the announcing biz babbling into a microphone in the car with the loud speaker on the roof. “I think the guy (with the car and sound system) was a Locke.” He talked about the days when milkmen with horsepulled wagons (he recalled Alex McDonald and his horse Snootzer) delivered milk in glass bottles and left them at the front door of homes in the neighbourhoods. Folks would purchase milk tickets or just put the change in an empty milk bottle. This was a time when folks didn’t lock their doors. We had neighbourhood watch before Neighbourhood Watch. And he mentioned one of those “small world moments”. A couple of years earlier he was standing outside No. 10 Downing Street in London. Another tourist looked over at him and said, “I think I know you. Are you the guy from Cornwall who had the little white poodle?” Turned out the visitor was from Cornwall. He had been Kathleen Robert’s (Ron’s mother) hairdresser at Fox’s. Small world indeed. Claude McIntosh Most of us who followed the Cornwall Royals over the years can name all the big names, the guys who went to prime time and those who have been enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. You know. Hawerchuk, Gilmour. Battlin’ Billy. Murray. Paterson. Daoust. Schneider. Sheppard. But one fan, Shawn Sturgess, passes along the mother of all Cornwall Royals’ trivia brain twisters. This ex-Royal became one of America’s most successful and wealthiest venture capitalists/entrepreneurs in that bastion of capitalism. Before he celebrated his 40th birthday, a time when many have just finished paying off their student loan, an influential business magazine named him one of the top under-40 business leaders in the U.S. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Time Magazine have featured the native of Michigan. Six years ago his 40th birthday party was held in Davos, Switzerland during a meeting of the rich and powerful. (The two go together). The party guests list included Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon, Texas real estate tycoon Ross Perot Jr. and Facebook co-founder Sean Parker, who organized the party that by all accounts oozed with excess. These folks might scrimp when it comes to their employees but they hit the generosity button when it comes to themselves. We won’t keep you guessing. The name is Rick Stromback. I know. Rick who? He is not exactly a household name when it comes to former Royals, but nevertheless he logged ice time with the Ontario Hockey League club in the 1988-89 season. He was brought in from the Belleville Bulls to play an enforcer role. His job performance review rated an A ... as in adequate. He was no John Wensink. But that is setting the bar pretty high. His post-junior

Plowing match primer set for later this month Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL Ontario - The Super Bowl of agriculture comes to the Cornwall area this summer - but there are still a number of people who are unsure just what the International Plowing Match is all about. To help with the puzzlement in some circles, The Ontario Plowmen’s Association (OPA) will be holding a pre-match Plowing Day in Ingleside on May 30. Plowmen from western Ontario will join local plowmen and judges for a Field Plowing Workshop, a full day of plowing demonstrations and preview of the BMO Plowing Competition which will take place at the 2015 Stormont Dundas Glengarry International

Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) in Finch, Sept. 22-26. “We will be presenting demonstrations of complete range of plowing styles. Historical plowing techniques will include antique tractor plowing and both walking and sulking plowing,” said Charles Leduc, president of the Ontario Plowmen’s Association. “Modern conventional plowing and reversible plowing will also be demonstrated.” Members of the OPA and local organizers of the 2015 IPM will be on site to answer questions about the plowing competition, special events, cultural displays and entertainment at the upcoming International Plowing Match. Plowing Day begins at 9 a.m. May 30 at David Brown Construction, 14855 Dafoe Road, Ingleside.

Counties Update: Big rigs roll, war on weeds CORNWALL, Ontario - As the United Counties look to rid an unwanted pest from several roads, half-load restrictions came to a screeching halt across StormontDundas-Glengarry and the City of Cornwall. The Counties roads department is officially declaring chemical war on noxious weeds by spraying approved herbicides along pre-selected roads throughout the townships starting this Wednesday (May

20) until June 30. One of major concern is wild parsnip, which was added to Ontario’s list of noxious weeds this year, although it was designated locally in 2013. The annual practice is part of the region’s vegetation management program. According to Benjamin de Haan, director of transportation and planning services for the Counties, it targets unmaintained rural

CORNWALL, Ontario - The 51st edition of the Cornwall Lions Club Sports Awards Dinner was a clean sweep for Matthew Camm. In addition to being named Curler of the Year - again - on Wednesday (May 13), he was awarded the Jacques Richard Trophy, an honour bestowed on Cornwall’s top sports

personality. “As athletes we work so hard to excel in our sport – events like this really put that into perspective,” said Camm. The Rockland-born 25-year-old plays third for Team John Epping, currently ranked eighth in the world. He represented Ontario (with Team Mark Kean) at the 2015 Brier in Calgary, and most recently competed in the Grand Slam of Curling and the Player’s Championship, both in Toronto. “Curling is such a finesse and mental game – it’s an all-around fun sport about delicate precision and extreme force,” he said. “We’re working with millimeters. And the physical aspect is ridiculous. Sweeping is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.” Camm is an active member of the Cornwall Curling Centre, competing in the Wednesday night ‘men’s competitive A draw’ and mixed league. After meeting his girlfriend there during a bonspiel, he moved to the city in December 2014. “When I started, it was just to play and meet people – it’s such a social sport, which is hard to find these days,” said Camm. To keep ahead of the competition, he practices three times a week and plays almost every weekend. “The drive to win is what pushes me – I love

3-4 days per week. Obviously, he would not be passing his courses. His parents were so worried and didn’t know what to do anymore. The headache never left him; he’d go to bed with it and he’d wake up with it. With traditional medicine, the headache took on different intensities, but nothing seemed to make it go away completely. Of course, Greg had been to specialists where a scan reassured everyone that he didn’t have a tumor. But he couldn’t go on like this. After some initial questions, 15 minutes into the conversation, I asked Greg what had changed in his life before these migraines started. He said his best friend had committed suicide. That was the key that helped me select the homeopathic remedy Phosphoric Acidum. The improvement was gradual. Within a few weeks the headaches had become less intense. In another few weeks, his time spent at school increased and Greg’s attitude improved. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease, so two people with the same problem may require different remedies.

AVIS PUBLIC

Programme de transfert des installations portuaires Le gouvernement du Canada a récemment lancé le Programme de transfert des installations portuaires dans le but de gérer le transfert des 50 installations portuaires au pays qui appartiennent à Transports Canada. Voici quelques-uns des éléments clés du nouveau Programme : • échéanciers précis pour les négociations et les transactions avec les parties intéressées; • critères moins limitatifs pour permettre aux nouveaux exploitants de ports d’agrandir ou d’améliorer des installations;

Eliminate the backswing dip! Please understand that if you dip your back shoulder in your backswing this could cause many different problems in you swing. Your timing, hand position at impact, weight shift through the ball, and follow-through position could all be negatively affected. Solution Fortunately there is simple solution. Go to the practice range and take a golf ball. Place the golf ball underneath your back foot (please make sure that ½ the ball is in the ground so that you don’t fall over). If a ball is uncomfortable use a towel or something that is at least an inch off the ground. The ball/object should be placed underneath your back heel in order to ensure that you have no weight transfer and that your back shoulder does not dip in your backswing. Then simply take your normal swing. If you choose you can hit a ball or you can just take a Check your equipment: Do you need new grips? Are your shafts adequate for your swing speed? Are you playing with the right loft in your driver to maximize distance? Do you have the right set makeup to benefit your game (wedges, hybrids, fairway woods, etc.)? These are questions that you’ll want to answer before going to work on your game. Also you may want to come by and check out one of our demo day’s. If you’re not sure what shaft or loft you need you can come down to Cornwall Golf and Country Club and get fitted.

few practice swings. Focus on not dipping your shoulder in your backswing (keep your back shoulder up and not down). I guarantee that if you master this drill you will make solid contact with the ball on a more consistent basis. This drill will force you to practice a swing with no weight shift back and away from your target and simultaneously help you with dipping your back shoulder. Practice this drill and be aware that if you are having difficulty hitting behind the ball at any point in your round, the problem could lie in shoulder position in your backswing. 6204710

We teach a fairly horizontal swing plane in comparison to most. Even though there are major benefits to this version of the golf swing certain complications can arise very quickly. This tip in particular was designed to keep golfers from hitting behind the ball. My objective is to inform you of all areas of the golf swing so that when certain situations arise, you can adjust accordingly. And ultimately checkpoints pre-established. Problem The player(s) back shoulder in his/her backswing dips down; meaning that the back shoulder is lowering towards the ground. This is hard to do when you have no lateral movement or weight shift back and away from the target, as we teach. However, this is very common among players who have a horizontal swing plane. The tendency is to lower your back shoulder as your swing plane becomes more horizontal.

Shar’s Tip of the Week Fabric softeners are waxy materials that are related to soap. They work by coating your laundry with waxy lubricants and humectant chemicals. The lubricants let fibers slide past each other, reducing wrinkling. They also separate a napped fabric a napped fabric’s fibers and stand them on end, which makes a towel, for instance, feel fluffy.

Recruiting

CARRIERS

Foams, like those from Icynene, are known to decrease the presence of common airborne irritants, reduce air and water penetration and reduce energy costs. When you sell your home, spray foam insulation stands to give a better return on investment than dated insulation.

The humectancts help the fabric retain moisture to dissipate the static charges that would otherwise cause clothes to cling and sparks to fly when you pull them apart. There are three basic types of fabric softeners. RINSE liquids are added to the wash during the rinse cycle. DRYER SHEETS are absorbed with softener. When you put a sheet into the dryer along with the laundry, contact and heat release the softener. DETERGENTS with FABRIC softeners are added at the start of the wash cycle. The most effective is liquid softeners but DRYER SHEETS soften to roughtly the same degree and detergents with fabric softener is the lesser of the two.

Common problems centre on air leakage and poor insulation issues, experts tell us. The latest research for example, indicates that traditional fibreglass and cellulose insulation are less reliable than contemporary spray foam insulation.

New speech processors help young deaf children to hear with greater clarity CORNWALL, Ontario - A pair of Cornwallarea children can hear with greater clarity thanks to advancements made in the field of Cochlear implants - and gifts from a local charity and the community at-large. Marc and Jenna Borer, of Lunenberg, were both born deaf. The youngsters were fitted with cochlear implants at a young age - a technological marvel that allows many deaf people of all ages to regain the ability to hear. But the implant isn’t infallible. The sounds people hear do not come with the same clarity produced by a normal ear. And background noise can result in speech and music getting drowned out in a cacophony of white noise. Marc and Jenna, aged 10 and 9, would often strain to hear their parents speaking, especially while riding in the family car. “As a parent, you always want the best for your kids, and when that means spending thousands of dollars you don’t have, it’s absolutely heartbreaking,” said their mom Julie. “The technology of the external devices have made many improvements recently. In fact, the speech processors are now Bluetooth enabled.” But the new technology is far from cheap. “The cost of four new speech processors is in excess of $11,000 after the government subsidies,” said Borer. But Rachel’s Kids, a local charity that helps

Cornwall and area children who face barriers to thriving, stepped in to help. “In tears, I explained to Rachel’s Kids how the new technology would adapt to the kids environment, reducing background noise to ensure superior hearing,” said Borer. Rachel’s Kids stepped in with a $3,000 donation. That was on top of a slew of donations from other community organizations and individuals. Recently the children were outfitted with their upgraded cochlear devices. “It was better than Christmas morning to see their reaction when they heard the difference in sound quality. They can’t believe how loud the background noise was before,” said Borer. “With this new technology, the wind noise is reduced as well, which makes it easier to hear their friends at recess. Music sounds better to them now too. “And with a mini microphone we wear in the car, our voice is wirelessly transmitted to their implants. They don’t say ‘what’ anymore when we are driving.” A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain. Julie said it’s tough to find the words to thank the people who helped, including Rachel’s Kids.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Sure, a new Cornwall business is quickly making a name for itself with its ice cream and food, but it’s the French fries they are most proud of. Surinder Gill, who along with his wife Kuljit owns of Capt. George’s Fish ‘n’ Chips in west-end Cornwall, said while people are raving about the fish, he said they often come back for the fries. “We only use fresh-cut fries,” he said. Capt. George’s, with more than 20 locations throughout Ontario, recently opened a Cornwall restaurant on Second Street West. Gill owns another store in Brockville. “We had people coming from Cornwall to

Brockville, asking when we would open one there,” he said. The opening was earlier this month. The restaurant offers fish and chips, in addition to other seafood fare like shrimp, scallops and clams as well as something for the land lubbers including hamburgers and souvlaki chicken. If you’ve got room left, Gill will soon be opening Cowan’s Dairy next door, which offers 40 flavours of hard ice cream, in addition to ice cream cakes. Gill said his Brockville operation quickly became famous for its ice cream cake decorating. For more information check out Capt. George’s here.

The following are the varieties currently offered by the Quaker brand: Hearty Medley; Quick; High Fibre; Wild Berry Medley; Protein; Crunchy; Lightly Sweetened Apple & Cinnamon; Regular; Peaches & Cream; Apples & Cereal; Maple & Brown Sugar; Flavour Valley Assortment; Large Flake; One Minute; Wheat Bran; Dino Eggs; Cookies ‘n Crème. Back then, porridge was just oatmeal, nothing added. In some of the above listed varieties there are 15 different ingredients. What an alphabet soup of additives!

At one time in the distant past…. Okay, you ask, “What do you mean by ‘the distant past’? When was that?” In the scale of the Earth’s history, the distant past wasn’t that long ago. Cars had two-piece split windshields and triangular vent windows on the side. Texaco gas station attendants checked your oil and offered free road maps, company logo glasses and cardboard fireman’s hats. Two dollars was almost a fill-up. Five cents would buy a variety of treats at a confectionery store. Appliances could be repaired instead of just being replaced. Cameras were loaded with film. All those things were in the distant past. A recent visit to Walmart prompted me to share my thoughts about how simple things used to be in the distant past. I remember when my mom put two quarters and a note into my hand. She said: “Nicky, run to the corner store and get me this. There’ll be some money left over, but only use a nickel of it to buy some candy for you and your friends.” The note read, “Porridge – let Nicky spend five cents of the change for himself”. A few minutes later I came home with a bag of porridge, some red licorice and a packet of aviation bubble gum cards. I had no use for the bubble gum. These days, $.50 will buy you almost nothing. To buy anything today, the decimal point

SANDTRAPS

A woman turned 80 years old. She was an avid golfer, so she decided to move to Florida and join a country club. On her first day at her new club, she was told that there wasn’t anybody else available for a game just then. Seeing her disappointment, and wanting to make her feel welcome, the female assistant pro offered to play with her, and asked her how many strokes she wanted for a bet. The older woman said, “I don’t think I need any strokes. I’ve been playing great lately. I just have a heck of a time getting out of sand traps.” True to her word, the 80 year old played beautifully. When they came to the par four 18th, she and the pro were all even. The pro hit a gorgeous tee shot, knocked her next one on the green, and two-putted for par. The older lady hit a great drive, but her second shot landed in a steep-sided bunker next to the green. Playing from the sand, she lofted a high, soft shot. It came down a few feet from the cup and rolled in for a birdie, winning her the match and all the money. The 80 year old was still standing in the trap when the pro walked over and said, “Beautiful shot! I thought you said you had a problem getting out of traps?” “I really do,” the 80 year old replied. “Would you mind giving me a hand?”
