More to Ontario than GTA: Wynne Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Premier Kathleen Wynne went to lengths Thursday to suggest there is more to Ontario than the GTA. In an interview following her prepared remarks at a reception for the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s annual general meeting in Cornwall, Wynne disagreed with assertions from some that the eastern part of the province ends at Kingston. “It’s just not how I see the province,” she told Seaway News. “I’ve been to Cornwall many times and I will be in Cornwall many times again.” The premier suggested her government’s 2015 budget includes provisions for all parts of the province, not just the GTA. “We’re talking about the roads and bridges in rural small towns – eastern, northern, southwestern Ontario - not just the Greater TorontoHamilton area,” she said. “(It’s) the reason I emphasize that we are dividing the money for transportation infrastructure spending per capita inside the GTA and outside the GTA (and) I want that message to get to people.” While it was quiet inside Table 21 on Pitt Street in Cornwall where a reception took place,

outside protesters with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union were demanding action from the premier on labour discussions. Wynne made reference to their arguments, and conceded both sides are in a tough spot. OPSEU has indicated that at the same time that the Wynne Liberals are slashing funding for much-needed public services, they are wasting billions on private sector contracts and spending billions more on corporate tax cuts. “I apologize for my friends outside,” said Wynne, to a smattering of chuckles. “And because we are in a tough fiscal moment and…we’ve said we have to have net zero at the table. There’s no new money for compensation. That’s why it’s tough bargaining - I totally get that.” For more on the protest click here. Wynne went on to tell dozens of chamber of commerce delegates in a jammed restaurantturned meeting room that business has the ear of her office. “I want to hear your ideas on what government can do to create jobs and drive growth,” she Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Ontario Chamber of Commerce president Allan O’Dette meet with delegates at a reception in Cornwall Thursday evening. said. “We know (politicians) don’t actually create jobs, you do that. we ask,” he told Wynne. “So I have a vested interest in your success.” Carr. “We’re a city that’s on the move and we know The Ontario Chamber of Commerce AGM The news was welcomed by Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce president Denis you can depend on you to help us in whichever continues all weekend at the Nav Centre.

And the best thing of all - it has put a smile on her face. “Every year I had been buying her bikes, and she wouldn’t even get close to them,” said her mother Carolyn. “She jumped up on this one right away. “I’ve been waiting for this for 10 years. It’s wonderful.” The bicycle was a gift from Rachel’s Kids, a local agency that helps children in need in Cornwall and area. Kim Lauzon, executive director of Rachel’s Kids, said helping families like the Larivieres, who have a child with Down Syndrome, is another facet of work they want to focus on. East Front principal Joe Harty said Gabrielle will thrive. “The gateways that have been created now for this child are phenomenal,” he said. Rachel’s Kids is hosting a movie event at Galaxy Cinemas in Cornwall May 23 for families of Down Syndrome children. The event takes place at 9 a.m. and will feature the movie ‘Shrek’ as well as another new release.

said Young, adding full-time soliders have retired or left the service and reservists are being used to fill those positions. He also added that many reservists transition out of the army when life takes over and people begin having families and developing full-time careers outside of the forces. But Young said the training and education offered to reservists sets them apart from others typically looking for work - and also grabs the attention of prospective employers. “It’s going to give them an extra skillset,” said Young. “They are trained planners. They know

how to think through problems. “Reserve soldiers make great employees.” It can take a few months for an application to be reviewed and approved by the army. Young said after that training begins - about 13 weeks - to turn a raw recruit into a soldier. And he said students looking to fill empty summers with work can look no further than the armoury. “I have a ton of work,” he said. Those interested in the reserves can stop by the armoury at 505 Fourth Street East, or call 613-936-9124.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The SD and G Highlanders are dozens of soldiers short of a full complement and are in search of recruits. The Glens, as they are also known, are currently 73 people short of a full complement of 170. Commanding officer, Lt-Col. Steven Young, said in an interview he has another 18 people who are moving on to complete other training and deployments, which will further reduce the regiment down to 69.

“I’m short a lot of guys,” he said. The reason? It appears many part-time soldiers want to be full-time. The Glens are a reserve unit, which requires a time commitment of one night a week and two weekends a month. But an increased number of reservists recently returned from tours of duty in Afghanistan have decided to make the army a career and have joined full-time - which means their regimental spots in places like Cornwall have gone empty. “A lot of them stayed (in the regular force),”

Case of deadly dog virus confirmed in Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - The highly contagious parvovirus that affects dogs has been confirmed in a puppy in Cornwall. Kari Brown told Seaway News that her 14-month-old male Collie-Labrador mix, named Able, contracted the viral disease. She received the disturbing news after visiting the St. Lawrence Valley Animal Hospital on Tuesday (April 28)around 7:30 p.m. The next day she started to spread the word on social media. “I’m not sure where to post this, but I feel a responsibility to let people know,” Brown wrote on the SD&G SPCA’s Auction for Paw Paws Facebook page. As a safety precaution, she urged pet owners to steer clear of Able’s stomping grounds: the south-west corner of the Walton Street and Lefebvre Avenue, in the city’s east-end. In 2014, the contagious disease in dogs swept across the city keeping pet owners on high alert. One Cornwall animal hospital had

reported seeing dozens of puppies with early symptoms of the virus. “In general, there’s definitely a higher than usual amount of parvovirus cases in Cornwall,” said Dr. Ashley Virag of the St. Lawrence Valley Animal Hospital. “We’ve already had cases this winter and one as of lately.” She described the disease as “lethal.” “If you do have a dog that’s affected, be responsible to your community - don’t go to public areas like parks or sidewalks,” said Virag. According to the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA), parvovirus is a serious and potentially fatal condition that attacks the gastrointestinal tract and immune system of puppies and dogs, causing severe vomiting and diarrhea. “I didn’t get my dog vaccinated and it was a huge mistake and negligent on my part. Now the love of my life is paying for it,” said Brown in another post. During his recent visit to the animal clinic, Able received a shot and was given two

different medications. The poor pup is currently under quarantine at home. To help with Able’s dehydration, Brown has had to boil ground beef, rice, and squash for his meals. Virag encourages dog owners to start vaccinating their puppies at eight weeks of age. She noted that the required series of shots costs approximately $300. The veterinarian believes the city’s unemployment rate is reflected in the number of animals that cannot be treated due to “cost concerns.” OVMA: Fast Facts The parvovirus disease can also attack the hearts of very young puppies. The virus is highly contagious and spread through direct contact with infected dogs or infected feces. It is easily carried on hands, food dishes, leashes, shoes, etc. The virus is very stable in the environment and can survive for years in feces and soil Canine parvovirus warning in Cornwall, through extremes of heat, cold, drought, or Ont. Alissa Umberger humidity. Though 85 to 90 per cent of treated dogs survive, the disease requires extensive treat. In untreated dogs, the mortality rate can supportive patient care and can be expensive to exceed 90 per cent.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Someone once said that if you have a guitar, you have a friend for life. For local jazz guitarist, Robert Cote, music has always been a major part of his life’s journey, and now more than ever, a source of solace, support and hope. It all began at a very early age for Cote, originally from Quebec, who was born and raised in a musical family. “My grandparents were musicians and my mother was a honkytonk piano player, said Cote. “She played bars and stuff.” Naturally, talent didn’t fall far from the family tree. “I studied classical piano and then The Beatles came along and it changed everything,” he said. “Then I started to pick up the guitar.” After 30 years on the road, Cote settled in Cornwall, to raise his family. “That changes your tune,” he said. “I had to work a mainstream life. I hated it.” During that time, though, he continued to hone his guitar skills, and would eventually go on to create Quiet Moments, his live solo jazz act, which, for the past 15 years, has been a fixture on the local music scene, at events, restau-

rants and other venues. “There’s a freedom with jazz,” he said. “It is open for expanding yourself. You’ll never see an end as long as you have feeling. You can venture in jazz where you can’t in rock.” Cote, along with old friend and former bandmate, Paul Giroux, of Ottawa, are in the process of recording their second album of originals, to be released in June. The project was a saving grace for Cote, who found strength through his guitar, more than ever, when his beloved wife succumbed to a brain tumour, last year. A very special track on the new album is dedicated to her, he said. “’Still, You Are the One,’ (tells) the whole ordeal of her sickness, the guitar cries at the end of the song, but it finishes with some chimes. She’s happy she’s home, watching over me.” “I’m getting better,” he said. “It was a shock, I was pretty screwed up for a long time, but you have to learn to move on.” A lesson he’s learned well. Cote continues to gig regularly and encourages the community to get out and support live music, and maybe try on some jazz for size. For more about Cote and a sample of his sound, visit http://www.rcquietmoments.com.

Hike for Hospice raises over $53,000 Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Amber’s Angels honoured a 14-year-old girl who passed away at Hospice Cornwall a year and a half ago, by soaring to the top of the popular fundraiser. Dwight Grant, bagpiper with the South Glengarry Pipes and Drums, led over 200 people from the centre’s parking lot on a 30-minute trek around the city’s bicycle path at the 13th Hike for Hospice Sunday (May 3). Sandy Collette, fundraising coordinator for Carefor Hospice Cornwall, thanked the community for helping to raise $53,455. Once again, the top individual fundraiser was Ray O’Collin. The dapper gentleman collected a whopping $7,300; his running tally is roughly $65,000. For Tara Marsolais, like many others, the hike was a personal journey. Her daughter, Amber Hickey Brunet, spent her final days at the 10-bed palliative care home last January. “She was one of the youngest to pass away at hospice,” said Marsolais. Amber’s Angels raised about $2,000. Family, friends, and one of her primary nurses (Wendy) were all there, donning white T-shirts and placards with heartfelt messages. Amber passed away four days before she turned 15 – her wake was held on her birthday. “She was an amazing girl,” said Marsolais. “I was involved with the pediatric hospice

in Ottawa and our hospice is beyond comparable - almost like a family, a home, not institutional-like, it’s very warm. I wouldn’t have been able to get through it without them and they continued to support my youngest daughter Abigail as well with their social work program for about six months after she passed.” Marsolais said the lovable teen would light up the room without saying a word. Over 300 people attended her funeral. “She never spoke her entire life, but she touched a lot of people,” she said fighting back tears. Amber was born without an esophagus, had paralysis of the vocal cords, a lot of congenital anomalies, and was developmentally delayed; nothing you could put into really one syndrome, according to her mother. She ultimately passed away of a terminal lung disorder. “The hike is a way for us to give back and honour my daughter at the same time,” said Marsolais. “It’s a way of remembering her in a positive way. It’s not just a moment of grief; it’s a moment of hope. This hospice needs to stay here because it’s an amazing place.” Since the centre only receives partial government funding, every year $500,000 has to be raised to meet its operational budget. “The annual hike and telethon are our two biggest fundraisers,” said Collette. CORNWALL, Ontario - Engineers provide simple solutions for complex problems, helping to advance society and better everyday life - that’s how Emma Barlow sees her profession. So it’s no surprise she’s the recipient of a prestigious award. The 25-year-old civil engineering graduate of Queen’s University from Cornwall won the 2015 G. Gordon M. Sterling Engineering Intern Award. Barlow has worked as a junior structural engineer for over two years with Engineering for Industry, a division of Lowe, Gravelle and Associates in Cornwall. Thanks to the accolade, she has also been invited to a “relevant and insightful leadership training course.” “This award encourages young engineers to take their role in society, and promotes lifelong leadership development,” said Barlow. The self-professed shutterbug sees engineers as influencers, policy makers and world changers that go far beyond “crunching” numbers and the technicalities of design. The annual Sterling Award celebrates professional leadership achievements of engineering graduates who are registered in Professional Engineers of Ontario’s (PEO) engineering intern (EIT) program. As a member of the POE’s Upper Canada Chapter, she has served on the executive since 2012, as well as the chapter’s education outreach committee, through which she spearheads an annual bridge building competition and promotes the profession to local students.

management plans and environmental approvals for industrial sites in eastern Ontario and upstate New York. Barlow chose to practice engineering in her hometown because she believes it’s important to be able to leave the office at the end of the day and be home or enjoying the waterfront bike path and the St. Lawrence River in less than 20 minutes. “Cornwall is a great city with a strong focus on community, providing an ideal work-life balance for its residences,” she said.

As an undergraduate student, Barlow was actively involved with Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), and served as the director of logistics for the PEO Student Conference held at Queen’s University. She has also worked on a wide range of projects, including structural additions and modifications to industrial buildings and electrical substations; the analysis and design of support structures for piping and conduits; the development of transmission tower foundation repair procedures; and seismic restraints design for mechanical equipment. Furthermore, the award winner has also been involved with completing storm water

SPRING FLING: Leaving a legacy at Cooper Marsh Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

5776863

CORNWALL, Ontario - This “local hidden gem” isn’t much of a secret anymore - Judy Bobka made sure of that. The Cooper Marsh Conservation Area’s annual Spring Fling ushered in the season with wine tastings and food pairings (a la Love Love Food) on Sunday (May 3). As the former chair of the Cooper Marsh Conservators (CMC), Bobka’s legacy lives on at the major wetland and tourist attraction. After a brief battle with cancer, the tireless community and political volunteer passed away at Hospice Cornwall on April 9. She was 75. “Judy would’ve had her hands all over this event,” said CMC board member Gera LeBlanc. “An organizer par excellence, she was very quiet - in the background. But my god, Judy knew how to get people to work. People followed her lead because she was so dedicated.” Having deep roots with the Conservative party helped secure

grants for the marsh’s ongoing restoration costs. Original marsh land owner Agnus Cooper recalled the numerous invitations for local events Bobka would send via email for causes like the Children’s Treatment Centre. “She was involved in so much and made it a point to keep everyone informed,” said Cooper. Dan Bobka, Judy’s longtime husband, noted that most remarks focus on her uncanny organizational skills and having a contact list only rivaled by the white pages. “She was able to pick up her Blackberry and contact John Baird – he often referred to her as his Blackberry buddy,” said Dan. He believes her unflinching character was the Cooper Marsh Conservators board member Dan Bobka, CMC board member Gera attribute that made her exceptional, as a mother, LeBlanc, CMC fundraising chairman Robin Poole, Cornwall & Area Birding Club grandmother, teacher, and political stalwart. President Mike Chegrinec, original marsh land owner Agnus Cooper, and CMC “Judy was honest and straightforward – Treasurer Jacques Legault. Adam Brazeau people liked that,” he said. “She never wanted accolades and was more of a backroom credited Bobka for keeping the volunteer group wetland boardwalks, climb the viewing platforms and visit the viewing blinds to enjoy more in motion for well over a decade. operator.” Roughly 15,000 people visit the local hidden than 130 species of birds. CMC fundraising chairman Robin Poole The Cooper Marsh Visitor Centre, located just gem, as she used to call it at least once during outside of Cornwall in Summerstown, is open each interview, on an annual basis. Poole encourages everyone to explore the seven days a week during regular business hours. PHARMACY

Just like Bethlehem: no room in the inn Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com Continuing with last week’s narrative: it was a dark and stormy night… actually, no! It had been a warm, sunny pleasant day, but the bicycle seat that had been falling up and down was causing me to pitch forward and backwards, forcing me to put all my weight on the salt spray slickened pedals. The threat of crashing onto the crossbar was like a Sword of Damocles hanging over my head. I could make some progress on the level, but the non-adjustable high gear, the dragging rear brake and my date of birth made any zooming uphill out of the question. In addition, I had to walk the bike down any grade since I had no useful braking power. Evening came. It was time to trundle the bike

to the hotel. My day with the bike left me frustrated and exhausted. I humped the bike up hotel’s grand staircase and through the lobby. As I pressed the call button for the elevator, I was approached by a young member of one of the security staff lingering in the shadows between the ornate pillars. His command of English was even less than my meagre comprehension of Spanish. His repeated finger wagging and utterances of “Prohibido, prohibido!” clearly indicated that the bicycle was not to travel in the elevator. By shrugging my shoulders I feigned a complete lack of comprehension. Simultaneous with the arrival of the elevator from the ninth floor was my confrontation with the next level of authority. This was a man not to be trifled with. Even a dullard could understand what his blunt but unpolished edict was:

“Absolutely, no bicycle is to be taken to your room, absolutely none, ever.” Crossing my arms as if to say, “I really mean it”, I murmured, “I have this bicycle and have rented a room in this hotel for two weeks. I have nowhere else to keep the bike. It is going up to my room.” He stomped off, instructing his young minion to stay with me. Behind his boss’s back, the young lad shrugged his shoulders, indicating he sympathized with me, but his job was on the line. A few minutes later, he returned. “Come with me” he gestured. He led me around to the service elevator. Aha! A face-saving compromise had been achieved: no bicycle in the passenger elevator, but I can take it to my room using the service elevator. This was his Plan B. However, I was hurried past the elevator and directed through a series of dog-leg passageways to an open courtyard in the bowels of the

hotel complex. It was where the garbage awaited pickup, surplus tables and chairs were stacked and where my bicycle was to be deposited. “No way!” I folded my arms across my chest and shook my head. With that he disappeared back through the dimly-lit corridors, leaving me alone. I explored my surroundings, finding yet another elevator, an escape. I hurriedly rolled the bike into it and pressed the button for my floor. Emerging, I discovered this was a completely separate wing of the hotel. It offered no access to our section, so I had no choice but to go back down, only to be confronted by my adversary as the door opened. His gestures clearly indicated I was to once again follow him – and stay with him. Tension was rising, but I was not going to back down. Stay tuned for next week’s episode.

Brown disassembles the donated dresses, and completes some of the hand-sewing on her own, but also has a pair of seamstresses who are donating time and resources to turn the dresses into angel gowns. “They’re still coming in,” Brown said of the donations she has received to date. She created a Facebook group, ‘Angel Gowns of Cornwall and Area’ so that she can create a network of potential donators. So far the response has been positive. “Some are women have had a stillbirth, and others who just want to help,” said Brown.

Penny Brown’s mission was to help women who have given birth to stillborn children - but she’s found a way to help herself in the process. She shows off some of the angel gowns she has helped create.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Penny Brown’s mission was to help women who have given birth to stillborn children - but she’s found a way to help herself in the process. Brown, of Apple Hill, is collecting wedding dresses and the like to help create so-called “angel gowns”, which she is donating to area hospitals. The gowns are provided to parents of stillborn children, for use during funerals. It sounds like a depressing, perhaps even

macabre initiative, but Brown said she has found a home for the dresses - and in the process is helping to ease the pain of her own losses. Brown has three children of her own, but has also suffered through nine miscarriages, including eight in a stretch from 2008 to 2014. “It’s just to give these parents something less to worry about,” she said. “And it’s helping me heal too. “It was a roller coaster, for sure. I said I wanted to do something different. I don’t want my kids to see me crying all the time.”

A bouquet of flowers is a classic gift that never goes out of fashion. They’re beautiful, colourful and fragrant, and they’re always appreciated by the recipient. What sort of flowers will you be offering your amazing mom on Mother’s Day? Ideally, you should give your mom a bouquet of her favourite flowers, but maybe you don’t know which ones she likes best. Don’t worry; there are a few general guidelines to help you choose. Peonies symbolize sincerity of feeling, lilies express both sweetness and purity and white orchids represent purity of love. They are all popular for Mother’s Day, right alongside classic roses, the ultimate symbol of love. You could choose a bouquet of only one kind of flower or a floral composition combining lilies with other varieties. When choosing a colour scheme, opt for soft pastels such as pink and white. If your mom prefers brighter colours, opt for a bouquet in shades of orange or purple, or for a bouquet of different-coloured roses. If you want to give a gift that lasts more than a few days (and your mother has a little bit of a green thumb), you can opt for a potted plant rather than cut flowers. Lilies and orchids, for example, are usually available in pots as well as in bouquets. One last tip: go to the florist’s early enough in the day to avoid the rush and have your pick of the choicest flowers. Flower shops are always busy on Mother’s Day.

OPINION

Memorial Park Public School - thanks for the memories Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

A little piece of Cornwall history is soon to be no more – but very few of you are likely to notice. Crews ripped into the former Memorial Park Public School this week. It hasn’t been a ‘real’ school for years, and was listed back in 2006 as too prohibitive to repair. The Upper Canada District School Board sold the property more than a year ago. So, the inevitable began this week, and the Third Street West school is coming down. Neighbours said the whole things is being demlished and they don’t know what is going up in its place. It sucks. I understand the rationale for the removal of the school, and it makes sense, but Memorial Park was the only elementary school I knew. From kindergarten to Grade 6 it was where I learned everything from the ABCs to fractions and writing with a pen. It was what many would consider an innercity school. Memorial Park drew the majority of its students from the working-class neighbourhoods within the old square mile that used to be Cornwall. I grew up on Yates Avenue, and most of the kids I knew lived on streets like Cumberland, Bedford, McLean and York. We loved Memorial Park.

It wasn’t the bricks and mortar as much as it was the teachers who made it a great place to go to school. Even at 40, when I can’t remember what I had for lunch or where I put the car keys, I can recall all the teachers I had, the principal and even the office secretary. For the record, they were Joan Mack (kindergarten), Josette Leduc (French kindergarten), Mrs. Mitchell (Grade 1), Mrs. McLean (Grade 2), Graeme Miltimore (Grades 3 and 4), Andy Petepiece (Grade 5) and Jill Molinga (Grade 6). Jackie Markell was the resident French teacher, Mrs. Murphy was the secretary in the office and Grant Edwards was the undisputed leader of the school as principal. Edwards made the school great…despite the fact that I was scared to death of him. He commanded instant respect and was a person you called “sir” and answered with “yes” instead of “yah.” He was also a helluva drum player, if I remember correctly, dazzling the school with the sticks during one of the monthly “assemblies” he instituted at Memorial Park, where classes would congregate in the gym and perform skits, plays or sing songs. When he left the school (coincidentally the year our class ‘graduated’ in 1986) the assemblies stopped. Parents were not amused. When I learned the school would be no more a flood of memories returned. Things like

of Fort Knox, so I had to turn back. It used to be that school was a welcoming place. Today, with all the security, job action and strikes, the places all too often look anything like what Memorial Park used to be – home. I’m going to miss Memorial Park. Jill Molinga, whom I’ve mentioned was the Grade 6 teacher, also taught music. She would often lead students in a song about the school and classes would often sing it during Edwards’ assemblies…or just about any time they felt like it. I remember a lot of things about the school, but I’ll be damned if I can remember the words to the song. I hope the rest doesn’t fade as well.

the ‘apple’ bus that brought kids to school (it had an apple in the front window so kids could tell it apart from others), the ‘apparatus’ that would fold in an out of the wall in the gym so that we could climb ropes and do pull-ups, a first-generation McIntosh computer that rolled from room to room on a huge kitchen table-like desk with wheels…and a massive field/playground that actually had slides, swings and (gasp!) monkey bars. It’s all gone now…well, mostly. Later, as an adult, I tried to get on the property just to have a look around and see if classrooms still had those massive closets that would line an entire wall, or the alphabet written in cursive across the top of the blackboard. The gate was locked up like something out

One to chew on: dental trivia to test your wisdom (tooth!) Spring has finally come to Cornwall after a long and snowy winter, giving us all something to smile about. To celebrate spring and the smiles it brings I’ve pulled together some trivia to test your knowledge of weird and wonderful facts about the mouth and teeth. See how many of the following statements you can correctly guess are true or false: 1. Cheese has been found to protect teeth from decay. 2. Over the course of a lifetime, your mouth

will produce enough saliva to fill one whole swimming pool. 3. Every year in China, people celebrate a special holiday called “Love Your Teeth Day”. 4. Most Canadians (70 per cent) floss daily. 5. Myth or fact? The enamel on your teeth is the hardest substance in your entire body. Answers: 1. True – a study published in the journal General Dentistry in 2013 demonstrated that eating cheese increased pH levels in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth erosion. Additionally, compounds in cheese can adhere to your teeth and protect them from acid. Try eating a small

piece of cheddar, which is high in alkali, after a meal to lower acidity in your mouth. 2. False – over the course of a lifetime, your mouth produces 25,000 quarts of saliva, the equivalency of two whole swimming pools of water. You’d literally be swimming in saliva if you could collect it all. 3. True – it’s a fact, “Love Your Teeth Day” started in 1989 as a dental awareness campaign and is now celebrated every September 20th in China. 4. False – According to Dental Statistics Canada, 70 per cent of Canadians floss their teeth, but not every day. In fact, a 2014 national

survey revealed that Vancouverites are the most likely to floss daily (36 per cent) while Torontonians are the least likely in Canada to floss every day (18 per cent). 5. True – your enamel is, in fact, the hardest substance in your entire body. That said, your teeth still need to be protected from wear and tear so avoid opening items with your teeth, brushing too vigorously or eating foods high in acidity or sugars without rinsing your mouth afterward. Let me get this straight. Con artist Willie Wise who is starting a 19-year prison sentence for swindling hundreds of folks out of millions of dollars - some of it life savings - continues to sit in a California prison cell while his legal team and prosecutors discuss how much and how Willie will repay his victims. Restitution. You must be kidding! The guy (Cornwall native, former city councillor and owner of the beloved Cornwall Royals Hockey Club) blew it all on the fast lane. The Caribbean party mansion, the yacht, the swank home in Raleigh, N.C., the private jet, the expensive cars are gone. Willie`s wardrobe is down to a prison jumpsuit. If Willie were getting out of prison today he would need a tin cup and a busy corner to stand on, preferable near the local mission. So, unless there is a dramatic increase in pay for working in the prison laundry, the good folks who put their trust and life savings in Willie`s Ponzi scheme shouldn’t expect to get much more than pennies on the dollar. ******** How tough was George Chuvalo? Well, in a career that covered three decades and included 93 professional fights against some of the most feared punchers in the boxing business, the four-time Canadian heavyweight champ was never knocked off his feat. Never. Not by Muhammad Ali. Not by George Foreman. Not by Floyd Patterson. Not by Joe Frazer. Nor by Ernie Tyrell and Jimmy Ellis. All

men who wore the heavyweight title belt during their careers. Not exactly the ‘stiff’ variety. He went 15 rounds with Ali. Not once, but twice. The first time, in 1966, was just two years after Ali and his rope-a-dope theatrics turned the champ, Sonny Liston, inside out. Ali called Chuvalo the toughest opponent he faced. Patterson, a two-time heavyweight champ, said the same. When he hung up the gloves, Chuvalo owned a respectable 73-18-2 record. And not only could the Toronto native take a punch, or two, or three, and keep on a comin’, but he packed a pretty good wallop. He knocked out 64 of his opponents. Chuvalo grabbed the attention of the Canadian boxing community when he was 18 years old. During a Jack Dempsey Novice Heavyweight Tournament, he knocked out four opponents in one night. In retirement, Chuvalo took on a new opponent: drug addiction. He has lost three sons and a wife to substance abuse or suicide. He has spent countless days and hours speaking to students, parents and anyone else who wants to listen about the dangers of drug use. On Saturday night, the boxing legend will be in Cornwall as a special guest of the Children`s Treatment Centre amateur boxing night at NAV Centre (dinner and boxing). Tickets (individual and tables) are still available. For information and tickets contact ScotiaBank in Cornwall. Kitchen helper graduates land employment CORNWALL, Ontario – A half dozen graduates from a popular Cornwall-based cooking program have found jobs – including full-time positions. The students, who recently completed an intensive 16-week in-class training session, and then finished a six-week placement as part of the Eastern Ontario Training Board’s kitchen helper program, have parlayed their success into work. The students have landed jobs in kitchens at area restaurants and conference centres. The news was confirmed in a media release issued by the training board this week. The training board is hosting the program on behalf of Youth Skills Connection, a provincial government initiative. “We’re so proud of the accomplishments of

our students,” said program manager Kimberly Vass-Lihou. “They worked so hard during our classroom sessions, and it has paid off because now employers are seeing first-hand how valuable they are.” The kitchen helper program is designed to help unemployed youth with barriers, between the ages of 18 to 25, get the skills and experience they need to get a job, explained Vass-Lihou. The 16-week, full-time session offers curriculum and kitchen practice, followed by a sixweek field placement. The first two components of the program were completed in Cornwall. The current component is taking place in Alexandria. “A kitchen can be anywhere,” said Vass-Lihou. “You can work at a hospital at a restaurant, you

can work in fine dining or you can work at a bar.” “I’ve loved cooking for the longest time,” said program participant, Guy Gougeon, who is working at the Nav Centre. “It’s very helpful; it’s taught me a few things I didn’t know.” Gougeon, who wants to make a career in the kitchen, said that the program certainly helped point him in the right direction. “It made me realize, that there’s a certain type of cooking that I really love more than other types. I love more bar food cooking as opposed to high end cooking.” From left are Daniel Ward, Brendan Graveley, Guy Gougeon, Matthew Delorme-Derouchie, Chaney Lauzon.

‘Job for life’ has largely disappeared Ed Allard As I’ve written here before, the employment landscape is constantly evolving due to new technologies and changing consumer demands. It’s not just in Cornwall, but across Canada, and the trend is showing no sign of ending anytime soon. Consequently, the ‘job for life’ that our parents and grandparents had has largely disappeared. Many of the jobs people did just a few years ago no longer exist – a machine is now doing them. As technology advances workers must be prepared to change careers or gain new job

skills to keep up. Today’s workers can generally expect to work in five different careers over their working lives. Workplace injuries or other life changing events can also generate a need for a new career. People facing these challenges don’t have to do it alone, though. There are a number of retraining options out there to help navigate the road to new job skills. This past month I spoke with Bryan Merkley and Wanda Bender at Academy of Learning and Cornwall Career College and Carilyne Hébert at Contact North, two local organizations that offer somewhat dif-

offered online by publicly funded universities, colleges and even school boards across Ontario. So, it’s a broader brush that covers both employment related upskilling as well as pure academic advancement. A major challenge for most prospective students is cost. Money is available from various government programs aimed at second career training, such as the Labour Market Fund, for example. Both organizations can help students find and apply for available funding, though it’ll likely cover only part of the cost. Training isn’t cheap no matter where you go. Tuition for a single course can run into a few hundred dollars, which adds up quickly when you need multiple courses for a diploma. So, for many, cost is a big factor in deciding what to do and how far to go. Some of the more popular programs lately are home inspection and health care related programs. The latter makes some sense because baby boomers are coming to an age where health care needs generally increase. Also those baby boomers who work in healthcare are beginning to retire and will have to be replaced. This seems somewhat at odds with recent headlines announcing layoffs of nursing staff as hospitals struggle with limited budgets. But over the long term, employment opportunities should grow. So, overall, the labour marketplace continues to evolve, but so do the organizations that provide the training necessary to keep pace.

Projects – Labour Market Resources - News & Events - Articles Our mandate includes directing the workforce planning and development in support of government training programs and employment related services. This includes identifying priorities for training; making recommendations on programs and services to ensure they are accessible, effective and responsive to local needs; and working with Community Partners to resolve labour market and socio-economic development issues.

ferent types of help. Both organizations are geared to the mature student, generally 25-50 years of age, though students as young as 18 can also use their services. They can assist people who need to finish off their high school diploma or GED. In fact that’s the focus of about 40% of Contact North’s clients and, for many, it’s a critical first step to a second career. The other focus is on providing post secondary training and practical skills geared towards employment. The Academy of Learning College was founded in 1987 and boasts 51 campuses across Canada. It’s allied with Cornwall Career College, which has operated locally for 25 years. Together they offer both online and in-classroom training in some 300 courses ranging from computer applications and web design to health care programs, accounting, office administration, marketing, personal development and so forth. The training is fairly intense and is geared to enable a student to reach diploma level in most programs within a year. They handle about 50 students over the course of a year. Contact North is Ontario’s Distance Education and Training Network. It was set up originally in Northern Ontario (hence the name) to help residents who lived some distance from the bulk of available programs. It has since expanded across the province and the scope has also grown. Contact North doesn’t conduct any training itself but it provides access to over 19,000 courses and 1,300 programs that are

Discontinue the fluoridation of drinking water Dear editor: Todd Lihou recently reported in SN that Cornwall City Council awaits a presentation on hydrofluorosilicic acid that is added to the city’s water. In the USA, the EPA refuses to certify it as safe, Environment Canada classifies it as being “toxic” and Transport Canada classifies it as a “hazardous good”. It leaches lead from water pipes that young children subsequently ingest. The skull-and-cross-bones are displayed on

packages that contain it as well as on vehicles that transport it. In the human body, it bonds to calcium from within the body to form calcium fluoride (CaF2) also known as fluorite and fluorspar, a valuable material in the optical industry. Some 40-cities across Canada, a few dozen across the USA and several hundred cities across Western Europe no longer add hydrofluorosilicic acid to municipal drinking water. There has been no mass outbreak of tooth cavities or of

diseases in any of the fluoride free cities, despite a warning to such effect by a representative from Health Canada that removing fluoride could put the population’s health at risk. The “expert” from Health Canada is regarded in some circles as having as much credibility as another medical expert who served as a coroner in Ontario, Dr Charles Smith whose findings led to numerous convictions. Except that other experts exposed serious flaws in Dr Smith’s

research and resulted in numerous convictions being overturned. Elected officials in several cities across Canada rejected the scare tactic by Health Canada and ended fluoridation. Fewer than 3% of municipalities in Quebec fluoridate their drinking water while municipalities across British Columbia are phasing out water fluoridation. Harry Valentine Cornwall.

Local club offers opportunities for you to get fit CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s the perfect time to come enjoy the great outdoors with the Cornwall Multisport Club. Maybe your New Year’s resolutions included running a 5km race this year, or perhaps you’d be thrilled to make it around the block without having to catch your breath. Perhaps you’ve envied a peloton of cyclists neatly tucked into a pack as they swiftly peddle down a local road. Or maybe you’ve had your eye on completing a tri-a-tri this summer but the thought of staring down the weeds of the mighty St. Lawrence River is a tad daunting. The clock is ticking and you’re seeing those resolutions fade into the sunset of yet another fall evening. But stop right there: the summer is just beginning. “It’s been a rough winter for everyone, but it’s now a perfect time to get moving on your personal goals,” states Rick Croney, Cornwall Multisport Club president. “The snow is finally gone and temperatures are warming up. “It’s the best time of the year to begin making your goals a reality.” The CMC offers many activities for all levels of members and ages. Offering both individual and family memberships, a wide variety of events and training opportunities will help to keep you motivated and on the fast track to a healthy lifestyle. While many people might associate it with running, numerous cycling and

swimming events ensure it maintains a wellrounded approach to fitness. “While our club is home to a number of stellar athletes who’ve participated in renowned events such as the Boston Marathon or various Ironman competitions,” said Croney, “our prime goal is to help encourage people to become more physically active while enjoying themselves. “Our mandate is to have fun, make new friends who share common interests and motivate each other to do well.” The year officially kicks-off with the club’s annual Spring Duathlon taking place at the Long Sault Parkway on May 2 for those aiming to multitask their running and cycling abilities. Most months throughout the year feature a club event with the emphasis on fun through gatherings such as the Victoria Day Chase, Super Sprint Tri, CMC Kids’ Day, Jumble Run, Labour Day Chase, Fall Duathlon, Frightening Fall 5K, Fall Road Race and, leading into the next year, Family Day Fun Run. All work and no play makes for a bunch of cranky athletes, so there’s also the annual Spring Social and Awards/AGM/Winter Party to keep things interesting! As well, Monday evening duathlon training has also commenced now, and – as soon as the water warms up a bit more – there will be late Friday afternoon swims in the St. Lawrence River. “It seems that it gets colder and colder each

year for the Family Day Run,” says Croney, with a wry laugh, “but it doesn’t seem to deter anyone!” The CMC will also be holding its popular Learn to Run clinic again this summer. Although previously held in the winter months, a switch last year to late summer proved to be a hit, said Croney, who coordinated it. It concludes with the Fall Road Race which is open to all club members. “We had a large group who not only participated in the 10-week program, but who are still continuing to run. That’s what is really important. Like anything, it can be difficult to get going, but even harder to keep going. The supportive atmosphere of the Cornwall Multisport Club helps to ensure continued success.” Kids never take a back seat either with the CMC. Each July the annual CMC Kids’ Day plays hosts to not only children of club members, but to kids within the entire community, during a fun-filled morning in Lamoureux Park. Everyone goes home a winner with their own keepsake medal, and there are snacks for the participants. The CMC Kids of Steel also aims to encourage fun and fitness among our youth. Members also receive a weekly email club newsletter, access to its closed Facebook group, sponsor discounts and are eligible for year-end awards. CMC registration is $4 for individuals, and $85 for a family. To register, visit http://cornwall-

Seaway Roller Derby Girls betting on casino fundraiser’s success Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s not a gamble, if the money goes to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Seaway Roller Derby Girls (SRDG) second annual Casino Night fundraiser returns on Friday, May 8, at Cornwall’s Ramada Inn & Conference Centre (805 Brookdale Avenue). Doors open at 7 p.m. “We’re going bigger this year,” said ‘Reckless’ Angel Kisnics, three-year member of the Cornwall Power Dames and event organizer. The first edition raised roughly $4,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. “Last time, we had 10 tables, this year we have 13 and we’ll be in the Simon Fraser

ballroom. Plus we’re going to have an auction (in support of SRDG), prize draw, and door prizes.” Former SRDG member Linda ‘Lynch An-Aideur’ Lynch’s teenage son Myles’ battle with the multi-organ disease has been an emotional rollercoaster. She had to pull away from the team because of her son’s hectic schedule. The brave young man received a double lung transplant in October 2014. But he was rushed back to Toronto at the beginning of March because his body recognized the cytomegalovirus antibodies in the new lungs. He’s currently in rehabilitation at home with family. “We will continue supporting cystic fibrosis,” said Kisnics. “We’re a group of misfits that help each other and work together great, on and off

the derby rink.” Test your luck at poker, blackjack, and roulette in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada to help with research and their local clinic in Ottawa. Tickets are $30 (which includes $500 in casino playing chips). The event is open to ages 19 years and older. For ticket purchases, sponsorship or other information, please contact Angel Kisnics at 613-938-8455 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2015 Seaway Roller Derby Girls (SRDG). Adam Brazeau

Set realistic expectations for the course: Remember that those first few rounds of the year will be a little rusty; therefore, do not get frustrated on the golf course when your scores are not where you would like them to be. While on the course, I suggest you take notes on what you think you need to practice so that when you return to the range you can work on the things that will improve your game most. At this point in the season you’ll want to work on your short game little more to try and get some of that feel back. Get some help: I would strongly suggest that everyone at least consider taking some lessons or attending a golf school or clinic to be certain that you are starting the year off with the correct fundamentals.

What happened to Nigeria’s kidnapped girls? Opinion Column - Sultan Jessa

A great partnership Each year the Cornwall Fire Department partners with the Meals on Wheels program to offer an invaluable service to local seniors. Fire fighters visit the homes of Meals on Wheels recipients to check that their smoke detectors are in good working order and when needed they change batteries or install new smoke detectors. Meals on Wheels wishes to thank past Chief Richard McCullough for being instrumental in coordinating this initiative and the Cornwall Fire fighters for providing the service.”

Bargain hunter’s wonderland CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s not your average garage sale, according to organizers. The Cornwall chapter of Royal LePage Performance Realty’s seventh annual National Garage Sale for Shelter in support of Maison Baldwin House takes place on Saturday, May 9. The event will also feature a silent auction and BBQ. “Expect to find plenty of nice things, not junk,” said co-organizer Linda Giroux-Daigle, Royal Lepage sales representative. The real estate agency is still accepting dona-

tions for both the sale and auction. A pick-up route will be operating on Saturday, May 2 between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will go on rain or shine since Royal Lepage is located in a strip mall beside two vacant spaces. Joanne Lecompte, Royal Lepage branch administrator, said the women’s shelter heavily relies on the support of local fundraisers to help offset annual operational costs. The event takes place at Royal Lepage, located at 722 Pitt Street #111. For more information, call (613) 938-3860.

A lot has happened since Boko Haram fighters stormed a boarding school in Chibok, Nigeria, and ruthlessly kidnapped 276 girls preparing for exams. This incident which received world-wide attention happened more than a year ago. Since then Africa has decided to unite and jointly deal with horrendous crimes being committed in the name of religion by this extremist group. A few days ago, some girls were rescued from Boko Haram terror camps in Sambisa Forest. But, a government official confirmed these are “not the Chibok girls.” Nigerian troops rescued 200 girls and 93 women in the Sambisa Forest. Nigerians are paying a high price for the terror unleashed by Boko Haram, the so-called Islamist terror group, which not too long ago mercilessly slaughtered more than 2,000 people in a single incident. Since then Nigeria has a change of government. The previous government was powerless to deal with Boko Haram. The new government pledged to deal mercilessly this group. But, we have yet to see any positive results. Boko Haram has been carrying out barbarism in parts of Africa. This group is so heavily armed that even the Nigerian army has not been able to do much to

wipe out this group from the West African country. We never heard if the African leaders sent 7,500 troops to fight the Boko Haram in northern Nigeria as pledged in Addis Ababa. Maybe the African nations want to keep a low profile and launch a surprise attack on Boko Haram. African leaders are members of the 54-nation African Union. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon openly threw his full support to help African Union’s initiative to defeat Boko Haram. Boko Haram is based on its own warped interpretation of Islam. We have still to hear what happened to the school girls kidnapped from a boarding school. Are these girls still alive? Are they safe? Have they been sold as slaves? Have they been secretly married to other terrorists? The world needs to know the fate of these girls. This terrorist group has displaced more than 1,000, 000 people and killed about 100,000 last year. The international media has turned its attention to other events, namely trying to defeat the Islamic State, a more ruthless terrorist group than Boko Haram. The brazen mass abduction gave Boko Haram instant notoriety. Even America’s First Lady Michelle Obama expressed horror at this abduction. African nations and the international community must pursue with vigor to find these school girls.

If so, then talk about a waste of money. Why is it that every time I see a motorcycle on the roads these days they are made more for extreme volume than anything else?”

How many exchange students can you fit in a car?

The rain was pelting down, it was windy and cold and there was a big puddle just outside the beer parlour in Dauphin, Manitoba. A bedraggled old farmer was standing near the edge with a fishing rod, his line dangling in the puddle. A curious young salesman came over to him and asked what he was doing. ‘Fishing,’ the old guy simply said. ‘Poor old fool,’ the young salesman thought and he invited the old man into the pub for a drink. As he felt he should start some conversation while they were sipping their whiskey, the haughty salesman asked, “And how many have you caught?’ ‘You’re the eighth,’ the old Ukrainian answered.

‘Walk for Alzheimer’s’ has plenty of spring in its step Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District has revamped one of its biggest fundraisers. The ‘Walk for Alzheimer’s’ (formerly known as “Walk for Memories’) will be held in downtown Cornwall at Lamoureux Park on Saturday, May 9. “This is great news because we can build off the energy of our colleagues - the new walk, logos, and message are nationwide,” said Shelley Vaillancourt, the local Alzheimer Society’s executive director. At the 11th annual edition of the event held

in January, roughly 40 participants helped raise awareness and around $10,000. The event proceeds go to local Alzheimer’s care, support, and education. (Read our previous coverage here.) “Now that it’s happening in the spring, it’s opening up the walk to community so we can collectively look at ourselves as being more dementia-friendly,” said Vaillancourt. There are roughly 2,400 people living with Alzheimer’s disease across Cornwall and Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry. Data also shows that women make up 72 per cent of the Canadians living with Alzheimer’s disease and 70 per cent of caregivers. Sharyn Duffey, the local Alzheimer Society’s

campaign and volunteer coordinator, encourages businesses, sports teams, and corporations to join the cause. “Strength in numbers will help show everyone caring for those with dementia that they’re not alone,” said Duffey. The organization provides family support, support groups, educational material, access to conferences, and are starting half-day information workshops. Vaillancourt said a majority of the funds raised actually stay local. The Cornwall & District chapter covers SDG, Akwesasne and PrescottRussell. Last year, a total of $10,000 was given to the Alzheimer Society of Canada for research.

Walk for Memories took place in 150 communities across the country for 24 years. In 2015, the Alzheimer Society of Canada decided to give the walks a fresh new look and name to help fight the stigma head on. There are currently 747,700 Canadians living with dementia, and thousands more who care for them. The walk’s new tagline is ‘Make Memories Matter.’ Registration starts at the Cornwall Bandshell at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 9:45 a.m. For more information, contact Sharyn Duffey at 613-932-4914 or email alzheimerrdcoord@ one-mail.on.ca. Pledge sheets can be picked up at the office at Cleo Cornwall Square, 106 Second St. W.
