Might be time to record in-camera council meetings Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

“All in-camera meetings were recorded and that stopped after 2006. I don’t know when exactly…but it was a common practice,” he said. Minutes are kept from such meetings, but unlike open sessions of city council there is no electronic recording of the proceedings. Jon King, a provincial representative from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, told council

members and others waiting to be sworn in that it might be worth the effort to investigate the reason the recordings were stopped. “That might provide some answers to you as a council,” he said. The previous city council came under fire for holding too many in-camera council meetings and was chastized by an outside investigator to that end.

CORNWALL, Ontario - City council may explore a return to recording the comments made by members during in-camera meetings. Coun. Andre Rivette and Mayor-elect Leslie O’Shaughnessy said Friday during an

orientation session that it may be tim to return to the practice that was terminated in 2006. “The recording could be rolling, to see what was said and by who,” Rivette said, adding the clerk could be in charge of operating the audio recording mechanism. O’Shaughnessy suggested the city used to complete such a practice.

Street hockey tournament scores big for charities ADAM BRAZEAU

Three teams from the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG had one goal in mind at the Santa’s Street Hockey Challenge on Nov. 15...FUN. Pictured are Fannie, Sebastien, Masson, and Jazaih.

CORNWALL, Ontario - It only took one look down Pitt Street to know it wouldn’t be a true Canadian Christmas celebration without hockey, on Nov. 15. The second annual Santa’s Street Hockey Challenge, hosted by the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall, transformed a large chunk of the downtown core into an outdoor four-pad arena for dozens of three-player teams aged six to 14. Organizers Jeff McCullough and Robin McIntosh created the popular event to give youth a free, fun day of sports as they wait to see old St. Nick in the annual parade. Thanks to community support from sponsors, a few dozen volunteers, hockey mom and dads, and local businesses, Christmas came early for three great causes. The United Way/Centraide of SD&G received $500 to help make their Dec. 19 campaign deadline of raising $707,070. Koala Place, a centre that specializes in helping young victims of sexual and physical abuse, received the same amount. The final recipient was The Children’s Christmas Fund, which distributes roughly 1,300 baskets filled with food and gifts for families in need during the holiday season. They received a $1,000. McCullough and McIntosh already have plans to expand the event by adding a hockey challenge for schools next year. TC Media and Seaway News are proud sponsors of the event.

On our website Graduation rates up at CCVS

CORNWALL, Ontario Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School (CCVS) has seen its graduation rate rise nearly four per cent over the past two years, due to a wide range of academic pathways and extracurricular activities. This atmosphere has also led to an improvement in Ontario Secondary School Literacy Testing (OSSLT) results, said CCVS Principal Trish Brown in a recent presentation to the school board. OSSLT scores increased from 53 per cent of students attaining the provincial standard in 2012 to 67 percent in 2014. The CCVS graduation rate over that time has jumped to 77.3 per cent from 73.5 per cent.

McDonell lambastes Grits

CORNWALL, Ontario - Local Tory MPP Jim McDonell took aim at the governing Liberals, lambasting poor spending practices as the fall economic statement was delivered at Queen’s Park. Finance Minister Charles sousa read out the document, that was immediately attacked by the opposition. “The Liberal government continues to spend beyond its means without regard to the increasing debt load that is affecting Ontario’s economy,” said McDonell.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Bruce Sheardown had hit a brick wall. His attempt to gather more information on his great grandfather had stalled. The Windsor-area native first believed he’d find more material out of Quebec, only to find out some of his relatives were born in Glengarry. He had a breakthrough, of sorts, when he began researching at Généalogie et archives Saint-Laurent. “The people here have been so helpful,” he said. “I filled in a lot of the holes. I found relatives going back to France. It blew me away.” Sheardown was quietly doing his work while the pomp and circumstance of the grand opening of Généalogie et archives Saint-Laurent took place at the Cornwall Public Library. The archival centre officially opened its doors at its new locale. It will have a public presence in the Cornwall Room on the first floor of

the library, while the basement will contain reams of archival material in storage. “This is great for tourism,” said Nicole White, pointing to people like Sheardown who often visit the genealogy centre looking for material on loved ones or family members. “This is a real joy for us.” Dawn Kiddell, the Cornwall Public Library’s chief librarian, said the partnership between her agency and the genealogy centre goes both ways. “We’re very happy to have them,” she said. “We have resource material, but what they’ve giving us is expertise.” The genealogy centre is open to the public weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. It contains a wealth of information on locals, including an array of death notices and family tree material going back decades.

Bereaved Families may be forced to close its doors TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A United Way agency that helps families and friends deal with the passing of a loved one may close its doors next year. The Cornwall chapter of Bereaved Families of Ontario is facing significant funding cuts in 2015, and may opt to completely close its branch, confirmed Traci Trottier, the agency’s program co-ordinator. “We’re facing cuts from the United Way and we’re trying to find ways to keep the doors open,” she said, adding Bereaved Families wants to continue its operations. But, the situation appears dire. “Our doors may quite simply close and the need for our services is ever prevalent in Cornwall, SD and G and Akwesasne,” Trottier added in an email to local media partners. Lori Greer, executive director of the United

Way of SD and G, confirmed Bereaved Families has been told to brace for some changes next year, but added specifics are hard to come by. “Our mandate is to fund specific programs within our agencies,” she said. “Not just general funding.” When asked if Bereaved Families was receiving so-called general funding Greer could not confirm what has taken place in the past. Greer has only recently been hired as the United Way’s executive director. Danny Aikman, chair of the United Way board, said the decision is not specific to Bereaved Families. “It’s not an easy decision to make,” he said of having to alert a local agency that funding could be curtailed. Other agencies have been put on notice as well. Aikman added the decision is based solely on the money that is available, and agrees

there are plenty of agencies in Cornwall and area that do good work and reach out to the United Way for funding, but often have to be told there isn;t enough available. Trottier said Bereaved Families is a vital component of the community, and suggested demand for its service continues to grow. “We’re in more demand than ever,” she said. Especially at this time of year. “Christmas is a difficult time and a lot of us fail to remember that it can be (trying) for people who have just lost someone,” she said. The agency has been a fixture in Cornwall for nearly 30 years. As the run up to Christmas unfolds Bereaved Families is hosting a number of events to help raise funds and awareness concerning its service.

The 18th Annual Lighting Ceremony of BFO Memory Tree is taking place on Sunday Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. The Memory Tree stands in quiet remembrance, paying tribute to those who will be missed this holiday season. A Memorial Tag is hung on the tree representing a special person who will be missed. The Memory Tree will be displayed throughout the month of December thanks to Cornwall Square. Volunteers will be manning the Memory Tree from Nov. 30 to Dec. 23 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Also, on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. a non-denominational candlelight service will take place at Knox St. Paul United Church in Cornwall. The service will offer a chance to hear stories of strength from individuals who have lost loved ones.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall SPCA raised over $1,000 at a new fundraiser to help offset the cost of spaying and neutering animals in need. The Spay-ghetti Dinner (without the meatballs) was held on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. “It was a little overwhelming because we did much better than I thought we were going to do,” said organizer Christina Russell. Over 105 tickets were sold at $10 a piece to help the shelter cover the cost of surgeries as it adopts animals. Handmade treats by Debbie of ScrumDiddly Umptious were also for sale, with proceeds going to the animal shelter, and attendees had the chance to shop around at the DVD sale. Louis Savard of Cornwall attended the dinner with his son Nicholas, 8, and a couple of friends, while his

wife Angie helped to serve the meal. “The OSPCA events are always great – whether it’s good fun, food, or walks with animals,’ he said. Angie, a colleague of Russell, has been volunteering for a year. She says the best way to describe her experience with helping to prepare the dinner was like planning a wedding. “You get everything done and you know how it’s supposed to go, but up until the moment that it starts you have no idea what’s going to happen,’ she said. Her love of animals brought her to volunteer, but seeing how many animals there are that need help, and what the shelter does for them is what keeps her motivated. “I think anyone can just go to the shelter and have a look around and see that it needs help,’ she said.

Akwesasne miffed over new security web planned for border Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – A massive new security apparatus being erected along the international border near Cornwall is ruffling feathers in Akwesasne. The First Nation Friday suggested the move with further isolate the Mohawk community in an era when Akwesasne wants to create improved relationships with the federal government. “The plan to spend millions of dollars more on external law enforcement is equivalent to Canada

sending in more cavalry soldiers to further surround Akwesasne,” said the Frist Nation in a statement. “We continue to state that other solutions can be found that are more productive and will benefit all.” The RCMP recently announced it plans to erect a $92-million security apparatus that will include everything from radar to thermal imaging and ground sensors. The move is being completed over the next few years in an attempt to curtail organized-crime activities that permeate the border near Cornwall and Akwesasne. “It is true that putting Akwesasne into a police

state that is already surrounded by security cameras and a multitude of law enforcement agencies can be viewed as an attack on not only our sovereignty; but also on our human rights, mobility rights and privacy rights,” continued a lengthy statement from the First Nation. “Akwesasne has made requests for partnerships and has called for increased support from Canada in order to help secure the border that physically dissects our community into several jurisdictions: Ontario, Quebec, and New York.” Akwesasne has proposed the development of a secure border identification card to help make

border-crossing easier, and has also advocated the implementation of a Mohawk Border Security Plan that would include local security/border officers and procedures. The RCMP have countered that increasing border security by way of the new security web planned to be completed in 2018 will be effective in curtailing crime. “(The project) will significantly enhance law enforcement coverage of the border environment that is being exploited by organized crime to facilitate cross-border criminal activities,” said Sgt. Greg Cox, RCMP spokesperson, earlier this week.

Meat thefts are often drug related: cops this year. “It’s being sold or traded for drugs,” he said. Since these products aren’t easy to stash, quite often robbers only get away with roughly $30 worth. Mrs. M., a 65-year-old, recently retired accountant, came to my office because of a terribly painful rash on the left side of her abdomen. The doctor diagnosed it as “shingles” and gave her antibiotics. Mrs. M.’s daughter is quite knowledgeable in alternative health, and encouraged her mom to look at homeopathy for relief. The first thing for Mrs. M. was to help relieve the severe pain with the remedy Mezereum. The next step was to use a diluted solution of Calendula and Hypericum tincture in a small spray bottle which she sprayed on 2-3 times a day. It gave her tremendous relief. Within two weeks she felt a lot more at ease, and felt the pain was reduced by 75%. After two months the symptoms were gone. Mr. Sapiens: Matured like fine wine CORNWALL, Ontario - Jesse Ferguson still believes good poetry can reconnect people with the simple beauties in life, and his fourth fulllength collection does just that. The 32-year-old Cornwall poet and musician released Mr. Sapiens (Wolsak & Wynn) this October. Simply because this new instalment was so long in the making, four years to be exact, Ferguson had much more time to let the poems sit and mature. Like The Shout and the Coo, which was inspired by the birth of his son, Brennan. “It started with an image that seemed interesting to me—the image of me covering his face with my scarf. The obvious suggestion there is that I want to protect him from the perils of life,” said Ferguson. He recently returned to the city, his

When Ferguson’s not creating poetry, touring as a Celtic singer at highland games, or working on independent albums as a tradFERGUSON itional folk musician, he teaches online English literature courses for Cape Breton University. By tackling so many art forms he’s able to express different sides of himself—the more emotional/down-to-earth side in his songwriting, and the intellectual side in his poetry. “The combination helps me avoid writer’s block, as I can usually write something in one

Recording private council meetings openly discussed the council feels slighted, like Rivette did, and wants action taken against one of their colleagues. Councils must maintain a written copy of the minutes of such meetings, but an audio recording would be that much better. Stephen Fournier, the investigator who took council to task for its record behind closed doors, won’t be back during the upcoming term. Not because of any altruistic intentions on the part of city hall – he’s retired. But if there’s anything the incoming city council needs to shelve in the coming years it would be more visits from his successor. The rules concerning in-camera meetings are fairly straight forward and it’s clear they can only be convened for things like discussions surrounding personnel or the acquisition of land. Sources who take part in the meetings tell me the rules are often bent, if not broken. Rarely does one see a city councillor go after their counterparts around the table, or (god forbid) a member of administration, publicly. For the most part councillors have been fair to each other when the cameras are rolling, and when they address administrators

todd.lihou@tc.tc

This accountability thing at city hall may be getting some traction after all – but it’s still early days. Last week at an orientation session at 360 Pitt Street, following a presentation by a representative from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, veteran Coun. Andre Rivette and Mayor-elect Leslie O’Shaughnessy mused about the good old days. Both men openly discussed the practice of recording in-camera meetings, in an audio format, so that a crystal clear record of proceedings can be maintained moving forward. The idea is not new – city council used to record its in-camera meetings years ago but stopped the practice. The reason is anyone’s guess, but it didn’t take long for complaints to flow in. In fact, the city was called out by an outside investigator for its in-camera meetings during the last term of council, and Rivette made claims of being bullied during such private council meetings. The recordings, one can safely assume, would not return so that the public would have access to the discussions. But, they could be used if someone around

they often throw in how they are “the best” at what they do. Reality, during in-camera sessions, is different. There’s finger-pointing, arguing, sometimes even yelling. In fact, it was remarked to me from a source that several council members had questions for Rivette concerning his actions that led to recent fines levied against the city. They were decidedly unhappy with his conduct – but you’re unlikely to get any of them to make such comments publicly. Perhaps that’s why there have been wholesale changes around the council table. The public isn’t buying the whole idea that in-camera meetings are ONLY being used for their designated purpose. Of course the work done by some conspiracy theorists in Cornwall hasn’t helped the

situation. Gone are the days at city hall when one could wait just outside the chamber doors for the public portion of council meetings to commence. Now those of us who want to take in council meetings are marshaled from one part of city hall to the other because some wags thought it would be a good idea to all but push their ears to the council chamber doors to listen to what was going on inside. If council returns to recording in-camera meetings it’s good thing. Of course it boils down to optics more than anything. We’ll never get to listen to those recordings, and if the incoming council has learned anything it’s to make sure they tread lightly on the subject of in-camera meetings. But it will sure look good on a press release.

The gem of Cornwall Dear editor: My husband and I had to pay a visit to the brand new Cornwall Community Hospital which resulted in seven and a half hours in the Emergency department going through tests and xrays. But, we have to say the doctors and every member of the staff on duty were professional, competent, caring and very friendly. They were all very hard-working over all these

The two big lacrosse sticks that hung over the west entrance to the city. They had to be the world’s biggest lacrosse sticks. ... The huge “cow” at the Anchor Motel. ... When cars had running boards and a bylaw prohibited the honking of car horns within earshot of the hospitals. The “Quiet, Hospital” signs. ... Jack’s Place, the popular Lancaster restaurant that was a favourite stopover for truckers travelling between Montreal and Toronto on Highway 2. ... Dominion grocery, next to the Beamish store, on Montreal Road just east of McConnell Avenue. ... Norm Lalonde’s biscuit shop on Montreal Road. This is where the first Canada Day celebration was hatched by Norm and his wife, Therese. The first celebration was modest. It was held at Nativity school yard and instead of fireworks, some 500 celebrants waved sparklers while singing O’Canada. HERE & THERE Bob Kilger’s loss to Leslie O’Shaughnessy marked the seventh time since 1957 that the mayoral incumbent has lost. It started with Aaron Horovitz losing to Emile Menard (who died in office a few weeks later). This was followed by Nick Kaneb losing to Dr. Elzear Emard in 1964 but coming back in 1966 (two-year terms in those days) to defeat Emard. In 1971 Ed Lumley became the city’s youngest mayor, defeating Kaneb. Phil Porier upset Brian Sylvester in 2003 but lost to Kilger in 2006. THIS & THAT Why does southbound and northbound traffic on Brookdale Avenue have to wait for a green light at the Second Street intersection when there is no westbound or eastbound

traffic going through the intersection because of the overhead bridge demolition work? ... Is is just me or is there a lot more late season road construction going on in the city than in previous years? ... Talk about betting on the winning horse(s). The three candidates backed by the Cornwall Professional Firefighters Association (Dave Murphy, Elaine MacDonald and Bernadette Clement) are back on council. The union said it was backing the trio because they“understand the important role firefighters play in our community.” Retired firefighters Mark MacDonald was not endorsed. SPORTS STUFF The broken hand suffered by junior hockey superstar Connor McDavid in a fight last week brought back memories of a fight Doug Gilmour had while playing for the Cornwall Royals. The game was against the Kitchener Rangers. Gilmour was on the ice when a scuffle broke out. He decided to grab Mike Eagles, one of the toughest players in the OHL. As Gilmour dropped his gloves, scout Gordie Wood, parked at rink level behind the glass, yelled, “No, no Dougie ... not Mike Eagles.”Fight lasted about five seconds. Eagles broke Gilmour’s nose with one punch. ... Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray, who is battling cancer, was on the short-list to coach the Cornwall Royals in 1978. It came down to Murray and Doug Carpenter who got the job. Murray went to Regina where he coached the Regina Pats who met the Royals in the Memorial Cup tournament. All three coaches - Carpenter, Murray and Mike Keenan - in the tournament (it was a three-team format) went on to coach in the NHL.

There is a new twist to community policing these days. It is called “Don’t Bother Us With Your Traffic Accident ... Unless”. If you are involved in an injury-free traffic accident, there is a good chance Cornwall Police Service (CPS) will be reluctant to dispatch an officer to the scene, regardless of the damage. Instead, you will be “encouraged” to exchange information with the other driver(s) and report to something called the collision reporting station the next weekday. In short, the drivers become the on-thescene ‘investigators’. They don’t even need to call police. This is sort of like the doctor telling a complaining patient to take an Aspirin and call him in the morning. Somehow, this system saves time, money and helps fight crime. The genesis of this new way of dealing with traffic accidents can be traced to the introduction of no-fault insurance which turned on lights in a lot of police traffic departments. This gave birth to collision reporting stations that have become traffic accident express lanes. I can speak from first-hand experience of the system’s flaws and how helpless one can feel standing beside a wrecked vehicle for about 30 mintues while waiting for a tow truck that CPS so graciously called, while the other driver, who didn’t have his driver’s licence or insurance information with him to exchange, went on his merry way. (He later provided it to police). I’m told that if I had wanted a police officer at the scene I should have asked for one. Whoa. Isn’t that why a call was made to the police station - to have an officer dispatched? I wasn’t calling to get the price of bananas at Farm

Boy. One can understand that well-trained, wellpaid police officers shouldn’t be spending an hour babysitting a fender bender (although these days that can be $500 to $2,000) in a parking lot. But one would think that if a tow truck is needed, especially at a busy intersection, it might be a good idea to send a cruiser to check it out. A retired senior police officer tells the story of his encounter with the new system. When he called the station, he got the same song and dance. But he played the injury card and bingo ... an officer arrived on the scene. The other driver was charged, only because the officer showed up. Coun. Andre Rivette, vice-chair of the police services board, recalled that he too was left on his own after a traffic accident on a busy street. Not a great feeling. And a woman involved in an accident discovered the next day that the other driver provided her with bogus information, never to be seen again. Kind of takes some of the shine off “Serve and Protect”. TRIVIA ANSWER On July 6, 1967, Prime Minister Lester Pearson laid the Simon Fraser Library cornerstone. On the same day Robert Stanfield, premier of Nova Scotia, officially opened a technical library in the city. TRIVIA Cornwall’s first parking meters (along Pitt and Second streets in the downtown core) went into operation on June 3 of a)1952, b)1939, c)1956, d)1946. THESE WALLS Building Campaign

This year the Agapè Center proudly recognizes our 43 years of service as the largest hunger relief organization serving Cornwall and the Counties. One way we measure our success is by pounds of nutritious food distributed to hungry people, however the weight of gratitude felt by our clients is immeasurable. Over the past four decades, we have distributed more than 4 million food items. In the past 3 years, we’ve experienced a 30% increase in the number of request for food assistance. Along with the growing amount of pedestrian traffic and daily usage, the amount of wear and tear has also grown. The building that houses our very efforts to help those in need is beyond due for repair. Please consider a contribution to the campaign to help us reach our goals. 5822390

GIVING TUESDAY:

CORNWALL, Ontario - They’re calling it ‘Giving Tuesday’ and South Glengarry is front and centre with open hands. The township council has signed a proclamation endorsing the newly-created nationwide event that encourages residents to give bac to their respective communities. The United Way of SD and G, in the midst of an ambitious fundraising campaign, is

coordinating the event locally. “The Township of South Glengarry is fortunate to have a number of volunteers and community groups who contribute their time and efforts year round,” said Mayor Ian McLeod, “Our council is proud to support Giving Tuesday and we encourage members of the community to join together and participate in this initiative.” Giving Tuesday takes place Dec. 2, following the kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

FALL SPECIAL

The event has gone viral, with communities, individuals, schools and corporations giving back to their communities, whether it is matching funds, making a donation, helping a neighbor, volunteering, holding a food drive or any other activity that involves giving back. A Letter from Heaven

When tomorrow starts without me, And I’m not here to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes, Filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, The way you did today, While thinking of the many things, We didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of me, I’m right there in your heart. Sadly missed by your wife Beatrice & family.

Candidates who are short-listed may be requested to attend an interview conducted by the Audit Committee’s selection committee. For further information please visit http://www.ucdsb.on.ca/aboutus/Pages/AuditCommittee.aspx.

Attic maintenance: Put a hat on your home (NC)—Just as people lose most of their heat through their heads, houses lose most of their heat through the attic space. Now that fall is here and winter is looming, it’s time to make sure your attic keeps in as much heat as possible. Half of typical home heat is lost due to

poorly insulated walls, floors and attics. Adding insulation is cost-effective, won’t take very long, and could save you 15 per cent on your heating bills, or roughly $200 per year. Nearly 25 per cent of your home’s heat could be leaving via the attic alone; it’s worth concentrating on this problem area.

Changes come to Agape Centre Thrift Store spotlight on the agape centre In case you haven’t noticed, there have been many changes happening at the Agapè Thrift Store recently. We’re open later to 6:00 PM on weekdays (8:00 PM on Thursdays) so that people have the chance to pop by after work to see what’s new in our store. We’ve increased our dock hours to 5:30 PM to make it more convenient for people to drop off their donations. We’ve brought back our bi-weekly auctions on Thursdays at 6:00 PM for those unique hard to find gifts. We’ve cleaned up and expanded our book section as well as our DVD section. Our furniture room is inviting.

However, the bigger changes are about to happen. We will have a live public auction on November 27th at 6:00 PM featuring antiques, collectibles, jewelry, currency and other vintage items just in time for Christmas. You can visit the Seaway Auction Company online to get more details. www.theseawayauctioncompany. com We will be closed on the 28th to refurbish our store and prepare for the 29th. On November 29th, everyone is invited to our grand re-opening of our store under our new name. The shelves will be fully stocked and there are deals to be had at the re-opening of our Thrift Store on 40 Fifth Street West. Our bright, new look will offer a wide selection of gently used clothing and

housewares at reasonable prices. “We really would like the public to know that this store is a store for everyone and it carries lots of merchandise at great prices,” says Johanne Gauthier, operations manager for the Agapè Centre. “3 lucky customers will win their purchase for free that day. There will be draws for gift cards. Cake will be served at 1:00 PM. We are keeping some of our best things and deals for that day.” The Thrift Store offers many goods at incredible savings, while generating funds for the work the Agapè Centre does in the community. But neither of these would be possible without the generous donations of product we receive every day from the community. By

donating, you are giving your gently used items a second life, something new for someone else, while supporting our work with those in need. “It’s very important to get donations to keep the store going,” says Alyssa Blais, executive director of the Agapè Centre. “This time of year is traditionally when product donation slows down a little bit, particularly right now for winter clothing, especially winter boots for kids,” says Alyssa. “We would really appreciate if people would go into their closets and see what doesn’t fit them anymore, or perhaps something that they have three of, and hand it off to us.” The Agapè staff and volunteers are very excited for the grand re-opening and we hope to see you there!

winter maintenance information

Rothwell Osnabruck School is hosting this provincial tournament from November 20 to 22. For more information on game times and results visit www.ofsaa.on.ca/girls-basketball. Come out and see the LANCERS take on the province!

Your assistance during the winter season will help the Township of South Stormont Public Works Department provide efficient and effective winter maintenance. Your cooperation with snow removal is very much appreciated. Trucks with flashing blue lights are performing winter maintenance. Please give them room to work and pass with caution as visibility may be compromised with blowing snow. Park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete. This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone. Residents may find it less frustrating to wait until the plow trucks have completed their street before cleaning the end of their driveway. Plow units are designed to discharge snow to the side of the road and are not capable of skipping driveway areas. Snow from the end of the driveway should be shoveled to the right, facing the street. This will reduce the amount of snow being placed into the driveway during the next plowing. Residents hiring contractors to plow their driveways should remind the contractor that the Highway Traffic Act prohibits pushing or placing snow back into or across the street. Doing so not only creates hazards for drivers, but also makes it difficult to keep the streets clean. Current policy states that the Public Works Department will only replace a mailbox if the post, or box has a direct hit from the Township’s snowplow. Avoid installing mailboxes where they can be damaged by plowing operations. Canada Post can provide guidelines concerning the proper distances from road surfaces. Residents should clear snow from the mailbox area after each plowing. Snow that remains in front of mailboxes will get compacted by post office vehicles and make subsequent plowing less effective. If garbage and / or recycling pickup day coincide with plowing activities, make sure your trash can and recycling bins are behind the curb or in the driveway so the plow will not hit them. Don’t allow children to build snow forts and tunnels in the snow banks adjacent to the curb, or to play near the curbs. Please be aware that there are many factors affecting the timeline for winter maintenance service; these include: snowfall accumulation the time of day the precipitation occurs type of precipitation (i.e. freezing rain, wet snow or “just plain” snow) The average completion time for each plow route is six (6) hours. Cleanup times will vary depending upon the above noted factors. All concerns or requests relative to snow removal should be directed to the Town Hall at 613-534-8889, not individual vehicle or equipment operators.

EDUCATION

Military tradition lives on at St. Anne’s School, for teacher and student Todd Lihou

todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Remembrance Day may be past, but at St. Anne’s School two individuals are continuing to hold a special place in their hearts for one veteran who is gone, and another still serving. Austin Delves, a 13-year-old Grade 8 student honoured his late grandfather this week, by bringing the Canadian Navy veteran’s model warship to school for his classmates to see. The model of the HMCS Sioux was a massive undertaking for Donat Mallete, who served aboard the ship during the Second World War. It stretches from arm to arm and includes every intricacy imaginable, including the Maple Leaf that flies above its deck. The HMCS Sioux was a V class destroyer that also saw action in the Korean War. Delves had always had his eye on the model. Shortly after his grandfather passed away this summer at age 93, Delves was presented with

the ship. He showed it off at the school this week. “It was my inheritance,” he said with a smile, adding the ship raised eyebrows at the school. “It was very heartwarming to see. Ever since I was little I was asking to have that model.” The sacrifices of a military life weren’t lost on St. Anne teacher Mary Miller, whose son Matthew, a serving master corporal in the Canadian army, has been deployed to Afghanistan four times. He’s just 29 years old. Miller said having a son in the forces, especially at this time of year, is special. “Remembrance Day is always an emotional time for families in the military,” she said, adding there is special significance this year, following the recent attacks on Canadian soldiers here at home. “We were all affected by what happened in Ottawa (and Quebec). “Our heart goes out to those families. But it’s their job. We have to accept that is part of the risk of their jobs.”

Christmas market keeps project on track CORNWALL, Ontario - In keeping with the tradition of giving, during the holiday season, the second annual Holy Trinity Christmas Market is hoping to spread the joy, to two great school projects, near and far. The school’s second annual vendors’ market, to be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, will have something for everyone, said organizer, Angela Pilon. The event, which has doubled in size since last year, will have 80 vendors of a variety of products, as well as art displays, food, demonstrations and a visit from Princess Anna, from Frozen, who will have her picture taken with the children in attendance. Proceeds of the event will benefit two school projects. The first $2000 will be given to the school’s Mission Team for their trip to the Dominican Republic, to work in an orphanage, along with St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s, next spring, explained Pilon. The balance of the proceeds raised will go

towards Holy Trinity’s quest for a state-of-theart eight-lane track. “This is a new initiative,” said Renee Rozon, principle at Holy Trinity, who explained that this is the beginning of a two-year fundraising project. The project was launched earlier this fall, with the partnership of many organizations and businesses in the community, at a wine and cheese. “This is just the beginning.” The school has set a fundraising goal of $500,000 for the track, $90,000 of which has already been raised, through the launch and other events, such as leaf raking, the sale of chocolate bars, dress-down days, among others. There are also plans for a golf tournament, next spring. “This is something we’re very excited about. Pictured holding an artist rendering of what will be the new track at Holy Trinity, are It will help our phys-ed classes, out athletics and Angela Pilon, Christmas Market organizer; Renee Rozon, principle and Rebecca also the community,” said Rozon. Macdonell, grade 11, member of the Mission Team. The Christmas Market will be held from 5 to 8 pm, in the auditorium and the atrium at Holy christmas market.weebly.com.

Bad moon rises at Lum Dome Thom Racine So, last Saturday night at the River Kings game, I thought I was stuck in the seventies for a brief moment in the third period. I mean, who drops their pants and moons anyone anymore? I have said many times how much I enjoy

this brand of old time hockey with modern day speed, but for heavens sake, can we not give the city any more ammo or cause to not support this team. Anytime things are thrown and sticks get high, insurance aside, liability issues have to scare them to death. For starters, the game was a very good up

and down affair which saw the home team leading mid way through the final period. Including the previous game, that was five and a half periods of shutout hockey for a team that has struggled early on and it had to feel very good for the players and staff. After an errant high stick dropped Kings defender Brennan Barker, a minor squabble that would happen in any hockey game began and was over just as quick. The players settled down and milled around their respective benches. Then, out of no where, a fan arrives behind the Trois Rivieres bench. I guess for this guy, who not 15 minutes earlier, was standing beside me at center ice as the contestant in the $25,000 shot contest, it didn’t matter that everyone in the building knew his name. Separated by the safety glass, he is animated and gets a water bottle tossed in his direction. Now that was wrong and of course, the bottle is returned to the bench....the usual jawing continues. Just when all seemed to be calming

down, the intruder made his way up the stairs - thats when the ‘cheeky’ interlude commenced. Really, did you have to subject the entire south side with that flabby display? Now, this ‘pressed ham’ will eventually get the fan a season ban from the arena, maybe even a visit from the morality cops, but what it also does, is create more headaches - headaches for ownership when there is and never has been any love between the city and their often maligned tenant. I suppose that this is what you might expect when a league that promotes fast hockey with and edge arrives on your doorstep, perhaps one shouldn’t be surprised. But, it sure puts a damper on the entertainment value that the LNAH has brought to the giant tomb for three years. On the other hand, I suppose it may cause the curious to drop by and see it for themselves, sans the visit back to the seventies, I hope!

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall continues to shine on the world broomball stage. The Eastern Ontario Predators have returned from the World Broomball Championships in Japan with a bronze medal - the fourth such occasion that the group of locals has won a medal at the event. “(We’re) doing our best to put Cornwall and SD and G, Eastern Ontario on the map,” said Eric MacDonald, player/coach, in a statement. The Predators qualified for the medal round

in Japan with a 2-2-1 round robin record. The team lost 2-1 in the elimination round, which kept it from competing for gold - but the guys stepped it up in the bronze medal game and shut out Australia 3-0 for the win. “We were disappointed in not winning gold for our city and eastern Ontario but we are the only team that have won four straight medals at the World Broomball Championships, so maybe we shouldn’t be too disappointed,” MacDonald said. The Predators will try for gold again in 2016 when the world tournament returns to Canada - this time in Saskatchewan.

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas for local group, The Roxanne Delage Band, now in rehearsal for their upcoming Christmas concert, An Acoustic Christmas, to be held in the foyer at Aultsville Theatre. Your Arts Council of Cornwall and Counties (YAC) director, Bruce Davis, approached Delage about performing at a council sponsored art exhibit, held there, earlier this fall. She was unavailable at the time, but pitched the idea of a Christmas concert. “I thought the space would be perfect for a show like that,” said Delage. “Bruce was very receptive to the idea.” “YAC is excited to provide, with Aultsville Theatre, the space for Roxanne’s holiday performance,” said Davis, who invites other artistic collaborations of the same. “Creating this opportunity with Roxanne and Aultsville

CORNWALL, Ontario - Like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, Mandee Woods has decided to fly high on her first solo music project. After spending months recording at Dream Builder Studios in Cornwall with April Wine drummer Roy Nichol (Seaway rock royalty), the six-song project dropped on iTunes on Nov. 10. Hard copies will also be available through

www.mandeewoods.com on the release date. The Cornwall singer/songwriter/guitarist treated every track on her Transformation EP like a mini-story. “I always tend to write in a visual way,” said Woods. “Songs about life, love, and struggle. I think there’s something in there that everyone can relate to. I definitely don’t try to sugar-coat anything.” Her music falls into an adult contemporary genre, but has reflections of pop-country as well.

Stock markets and aircraft aren’t the only things that crash

Nick Wolochatiuk dances with words nuthilltoo@gmail.com

During the month of January 1998, most of us went back to the basics. Water no longer came out of the taps, toilets did not flush. The television screens remained blank. No matter how much we fiddled with the thermostats, no warmth emanated from the baseboard heaters. The ‘Open Sesame’ remotes for the garage door just sulked in silence. Darkness came when the sun set. Canada Post eventually replaced e-mail. There was no satellite-based weather report or forecast. The hoard of food in the freezer began to thaw. The rural folks who hadn’t decommissioned their hand-pumped wells were the fortunate ones. Board games and books were retrieved from the shelves to provide entertainment. Those who had a wood stove and five cords of split and dried hardwood stacked under cover were considered wealthy. The propane lamps

and stoves used on camping trips were brought out to provide precious light and the means to cook. Candlelight was no longer just for romantic tete-a-tete dinners. We just looked to the western sky and extended a wet finger to divine the next day’s weather and the current wind direction. In a race to beat the spoilage that would soon come, we dined like kings on the still frozen ham, shrimp, salmon and steaks that had been reserved in anticipation of special celebrations such as Easter, birthdays and wedding anniversaries. The art of conversation was rediscovered. Children heard tales of previous ice storms and blizzards, camping trips, the Depression, life in The Old Country and the days we did without – but were happy. During the early period of the Ice Storm of 1998, I was a full-time reporter without the convenience of a working computer to research on The Net, compose my stories and submit them electronically. My memory, notebook and pen

were once again the workhorses of my trade. So it is today, 3:00 PM, Sunday November 16, 2014. My laptop has ‘crashed’. All the convenient templates I have prepared, all the details gleaned during my preparatory research and all the preliminary drafts of my future columns are locked in the remote recesses of the inaccessible hard drive of my laptop. Once again, my Spell Check is my dictionary and my wife.

LET THERE BE LIGHT! – And heat! Put some water on to boil. We can roast the potatoes in the coals. There is nothing like heat from an open fire; it cooks the meal and warms the soul. (by Nick Wolochatiuk)

IT’S ALL IN THE INTERPRETATION

A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a sheriff. He thinks he’s smarter being a big shot lawyer from New York and has a better education than an sheriff from West Virginia. The sheriff asks for license and registration. The lawyer asks, “What for?” The sheriff responds, “You didn’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign.” The lawyer says, “I slowed down and no one was coming.” “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration please,” says the sheriff impatiently. The lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I’ll give you my license and registration and you can give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don’t give me the ticket.” The sheriff says, “That sounds fair, please exit your vehicle.” The lawyer steps out and the sheriff takes out his nightstick and starts beating the lawyer with it. The sheriff says, “Do you want me to stop or just slow down?”
