MacDonald wants $10M from the feds to fix waterfront “screw up” Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

on the matter yet - he won’t be sworn in until next week along with the rest of council. But he has tasked administrators with forwarding his request to Lauzon. “I put that ($10 million) as the minimum,” said MacDonald. MP Guy Lauzon suggested the money to remediate the land would likely be discussed by City of Cornwall representatives, as well as others from Akwesasne and Transport Canada, as part of port divestiture talks. For weeks the three parties have been discussing a plan that would see the city assume ownership of the lands. “If there is remedial action money, that’s

part of the negotiation process,” he said, adding the government will return the land to Cornwall in remediated fashion, or provide the money to accomplish that goal. The new city council gets sworn in Monday night at the civic complex. It will have to hit the ground running, as budget deliberations here in the city will begin in the New Year. MacDonald said it’s his hope council will make time for a strategic planning sessions, where the mayor and councillors map out their priorities for the coming term, while budget talks continue. “We can’t have a budget without meeting to find out who wants what,” he said.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A councillor-elect who gets sworn in next week is already planting the seed to gain access to money to fix Cornwall’s waterfront “mistake.” Mark MacDonald, who was re-elected to city council in October, is petitioning local MP Guy Lauzon to have the federal government set aside $10 million, maybe more, in so-called “crisis management” funding to clean up the waterfront lands where a pair of controversial chemical tanks now sits. “They screwed up,” MacDonald said of the federal government decision to enter into a

lease agreement with a private firm, Trillium Distribution, to build a pair of chemical tanks adjacent to the Cornwall Harbour. “We need to leverage our position with them. “I think we’re in an extremely good position.” Perhaps, but what is the likelihood of the federal government setting aside $10 million for just one municipality? “That’s their problem,” MacDonald responded. Local MP Guy Lauzon is soliciting material from the general public as the federal Tories head into budget deliberations. MacDonald cannot act as a city councillor

A Christmas tradition that’s fit as a fiddle Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Multiple Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods and his band will be bringing classic holiday music, sensational step dancing, and trick fiddling to Cornwall Thursday night. This two-hour concert titled Christmas Tradition will take place at the Cornwall Civic Complex at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25. Children aged six to 12 get in for $10, and there’s no charge for youth five and under. Woods has played classical violin since he was four years old. As far as fiddlers go, he’s the real deal. The two-time winner of the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest and the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championships will wow the audience with front running summersaults and tumbling

as he performs. Woods is inspired by pioneer fiddlers Al Cherny, Tommy Hunter, and Graham Townsend. But he recognizes the importance of new blood on the strings, and noted the extreme talent of Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac. “I like modern things and appreciate younger fiddlers who modernize old tunes,” he said. This concert is but one of over 45 performances that the Scott Woods Band has booked through to Aug. 2015. There are no other Cornwall dates, but the band will play at Alexandria’s Glengarry District High School in April 2015. The motivation to keep such a grueling tour schedule comes from the crowd. When his tour bus broke down in Chatham recently on the way to a gig, he said the audience made it all worth it. “During a sentimental Christmas song a

senior couple held hands. That’s the real reward: keeping this music alive,” said Woods. “Before smartphones, you had entertainment; you went to an old-time dance hall with real live music. We’re doing our part to keep it going.” He will be joined on stage by: Nadine Boles, guitar/singer, Gary Boles, upright bass/singer, Ron Dyamond, drums, Nova Scotia’s Bruce Timmins, lead guitar, and 14-year-old singer, fiddler and step dancer Amanda MacInnis. The band has its roots in The Merv Woods Orchestra, originally started by Woods’ father in 1950. Pick up your tickets at the Cornwall Civic Complex box office or order by phone anytime by calling 1-855-SCOTTWOODS (1-855-7268896) to charge. CORNWALL, Ontario - MP Guy Lauzon announced recently that young Francophones with a sense of humour will get to flex their funny bone, thanks to $75,000 in funding over the next two years. The cash injection will go to the Association Canadienne Francaise de l’Ontario - Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (ACFO-SDG) for a youthoriented culture and heritage project. Over 80 high school students from the French school boards have already signed up, including La Citadelle’s Frédrik Larivière, 15. “We had our first meeting and we’re learning what’s funny and what’s not,” said Larivière. “This will help students relax and have fun in between their studies.” Being a stand-up comic is not his career choice, but he says the training is an exciting way to find his own voice as he learns how to

speak to large crowds. The young humorists will be expected to present comedy sketches they prepared following several workshops and training offered by the École nationale de l’humour and the Just for Laughs Festival. But all joking aside, Larivière hopes to be one of the 15 participants who get to perform at a special edition of the Just for Laughs Festival, on May 28, 2015, at Aultsville Theatre in Cornwall, which will celebrate the 400th anniversary of French presence in Ontario. “This funding is critically important for local French culture because one third of Cornwall is Francophone,” said Lauzon. He made the announcement with Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger, and Pierre Lemieux, MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, on behalf of Heritage Minister Shelly Glover.

As the legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald lives on, so does the legendary Gordon Lightfoot, who performed at Aultsville Theatre, last Friday night. It was an intimate affair as just over 400 fans of the iconic Canadian minstrel, hung on his every note. Lightfoot, 76, who is on the last leg of his 2014 tour, performed such classics as Carefree Highway, Beautiful, If You Could Read My Mind, and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

United Way’s signature event doubles in size Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A swanky affair in the salons of the Cornwall Civic Complex Saturday night helped raise much-needed funds for the United Way of SD&G. Ninety-seven sponsors stepped up to make the second annual Corus Cares Holiday Wine & Gourmet Tastings event a success. Organizer Angie Baker expects to surpass or rather double - last year’s total of roughly $20,000. “It was something we thought was really needed for the United Way,” said Baker. “They’ve never had a signature event.” In order to create the elegant evening, she estimates that $50,000 to $75,000 was invested, including cash donations, volunteer hours, inkind services, auction items, and decor. The official results will be announced next week. Lori Greer, executive director for the SD&G branch of United Way, said the 2014 campaign, which aims to raise $707,070 by Dec. 19 to support the 16 agencies under its umbrella, is at the

30 per cent mark. She described the charitable soiree as a tremendous boost to their efforts that has become a must-attend function. “It took an amazing group of volunteers and countless sponsors to make this possible,” said Greer. “The support has been amazing, but we still need donations to come in to reach our goal.” As guests arrived, they were greeted with a glass of sparkling cider. Live jazz music and aromas of fine cuisine wafted throughout the many gourmet dessert stations. There was a martini bar, live and silent auction, and the list goes on. Stephanie Lalonde, executive chair of the decorating committee, said it took nearly a week to transform the salons into such a fancy venue. Greer and Baker also thanked Bruce Wickham, the local go-to decorator, for his support. TC Media and Cornwall Seaway News were proud sponsors of the event. For more information on how to support the 70th anniversar y campaign, visit unitedwaysdg.com.

OPINION

River Kings looking more like a court jester - again Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

You’ve seen ‘Slapshot’, right? My favourite scene in that quintessential hockey movie is the one where the team’s French-Canadian goalie repeatedly demands to know who “oowwwnnnzzz” the team in a heavily accented voice. It’s a great question – because people have been asking it repeatedly in Cornwall in recent weeks. The Cornwall River Kings soap opera was back at the top of every local hockey fan’s mind last week, with rumours racing around the city concerning the team’s ownership. Things came to a head Sunday when Brock Frost, a city councillor-elect, sold his majority stake in the team to chief cook and bottle washer Darren Madden. The deal, which still requires league approval, was probably done long before Sunday, but that’s when it finally went public following days of speculation. Madden, who has held nearly every position possible with team outside of coach and backup goalie, has promised nothing will change and suggested the team is in a strong financial position.

But perhaps things do have to change. Big time. The only thing consistent about this team has been its inconsistency. Four owners in just two years? C’mon guys…that needs to change. Others have also jumped ship in recent days with significant components of the off-ice team dropping off the radar. The Papineaus, Kevin and Allison, who spent hours shooting footage and taking pictures at River Kings games, have indicated they won’t be back unless they’re sitting in the stands as fans. Same goes for accountant Anne Laperle, who sent out a missive last week via social media, suggesting she can’t in good conscience continue with the team. She’ll support the Kings from the stands as well. Not exactly an auspicious start to the Madden reign. Madden has some hockey knowledge. His time with the River Kings includes stints as team trainer, director of sales and director of merchandise, but most importantly he has pressed the flesh with fans via a connection with the team’s booster club. That’s in addition to spending hours at the rink, before, after and during games, listening to people. In addition to signing the cheques Madden

has just one other responsibility: finish the season as owner and come back again next year for more of the same. Even in the up-and-down world of semi-pro hockey, the River Kings ownership saga is becoming a joke. Now is the time to shut the door on those kinds of suggestions because, not unlike the scoreboard at centre ice, time is running out on this one. If the River Kings are to be a significant part of this city moving forward you can use any sports cliché you like: “It’s do or die time…Their backs are against the wall…It’s gut-check time.” This team will not get another free pass from fans sick of changes at the top. With all due respect to the Cornwall Colts, fans of the River Kings are some of the most passionate I have seen in the Seaway City in some time. When they’re happy, few will celebrate with the gusto of a Kings fan. And when they’re angry…well, if you’ve been anywhere close to the Facebook fan page of the River Kings then you can see first-hand just how upset they have become. It’s getting ugly. Madden has a monumental task before him. To convince an already skeptical fan base that not only is the team financially secure, but building towards years of success – while a laundry

list of owners have come and gone in just two years – is something I cannot envy. A big indication of just how big the challenge Madden faces will come Saturday when Riviere-du-Loup comes to Cornwall. It will be the first home game the team plays since the ownership was settled, kind of, on the weekend. Will fans return? Of course. Like I said, they’re passionate about this team and only want to see it succeed. But the days of 2,000-plus at the Ed Lumley Arena for home games are a thing of the past until more consistency (and dare I say, more wins) presents itself. The people left watching River Kings games are the die-hards – the guys who paint their chests in red and blue despite the fact the team is mired in last place after 15 games. Fence sitters will stay away until this team sorts itself out. Only time can mend what’s wrong with the River Kings. With respect, Madden and Frost can say all they want about the team being secure. Fans and the general public are tired of words, and many of them are openly questioning that sentiment. It’s time for the focus to move away from ownership – let’s hope that’s because the owners have taken a backseat to a great product on the ice. Let’s hope.

Richard Allaire was a classy individual Of all the people this scribbler dealt with at city hall over the years, Richard Allaire without doubt was the classiest of the classiest. He grew up in the east end, around Mattice Park, when it was Cornwall Township. Fresh out of school he wanted to become a firefighter. There were no openings so he took an entry level job at city hall and worked his way to the top. He accepted the CAO position on the condition he could keep the clerk’s title. Sort of an insurance policy. Thus, he became the city’s first and only CAO/Clerk. His “second job” was working the canteen at the Water Street Arena. His father-in-law Gus Lebrun, who would become co-owner of the Royals, owned the arena concession rights in those days and the family pitched in, sans financial compensation. Gus would throw a party for them at the end of each season. Some of his CAO tenure was during the turbulent, infamous “Dodge City” days, but through it all Allaire remained cool, calm and collected, never wearing his feelings on his sleeve. He was unflappable. He would joke that the CAO job was the only city job which had a job evaluation every two weeks (council meetings). He performed the near impossible tight-rope act of running the city and dealing with council with all the skill of a Wallenda of high-wire fame. In all the years I knew him, I never heard

Richard Allaire say a bad word about anybody, even when his beloved Montreal Canadiens would blow a game. In retirement, he gave back to his hometown, working as a volunteer with numerous charitable causes, even while battling a serious illness the past few years. He lost his long, courageous fight with leukemia last week. ****** You can’t have a Cornwall Police Service budget debate without somebody mentioning the word OPP. And in a couple of months, the cost of running CPS probably will be back under the financial microscope. The cost of running CPS is the biggest single service expenditure. On the average municipal residential tax bill, CPS takes $770 of the $2,706. The city’s second biggest is the fire department, far back at $339 per $2,706. CPS budgets, which have outpaced inflation, have been the proverbial elephant in the room in most of the past seven or eight budget processes. It is a far cry from when Chief Tony Repa had a surplus in one of his budgets. But it was pretty easy for Repa. He parlayed a mass exodus of first-class officers (and higher salaries) into a $300,000 surplus that was returned to the city coffers. Having the OPP take over from CPS is not a new idea. It was raised by Mayor Ron Martelle back in the early 1990s during a short-lived

skirmish with the police union that ended with a love-in and a change of heart about an OPP take-over. At the time, Cornwall police officers were the highest paid in the province. The OPP idea has been tossed around several times since but has never reached first base. Since then, another idea has been proposed - a regional police force. CPS did propose this to the United Counties several years ago but the neighbouring municipalities voted to keep the status quo (OPP) rather than “risk” a regional force under the aegis of CPS. There is no reason to think that they will change their minds anytime soon, meaning never. TRIVIA ANSWER The first parking meters in Cornwall (along Pitt and Second streets in the downtown core) were installed in 1946. They accepted one-cent coins. TRIVIA A ceremonial flame was lit in Memorial Park on March 6, 1958. What was the occasion? THIS’N’DAT The Wynnettes have made a big deal out of giving Ontario residents a break by ordering the insurance companies to roll back premiums. Meanwhile, they are taking back a chunk of the reduction by pushing up the cost of driver’s licences and vehicle permits. Then there is the mother of all tax grabs, the “E” test. ... Like to have the weather gods explain why winter arrives three to four weeks before the official start (Dec. 21) but we don’t get the same early start on spring (March 21). ... The S-F’s

R-Man wrote that it would be good if Ministry of Housing closed meeting sleuth Steve Fournier never had to be assigned to another Cornwall city hall investigation. No need to fret, R-Man. Fournier will never carry out another investigation at city hall. Why? Few months back he retired. HERE & THERE With a new four-year contract, Chief Dan Parkinson is positioned to be the first Cornwall police chief eligible for both CPP and Old Age Security. He is currently the city’s second longest serving police chief (and the first not to live in Cornwall). Danny Aikman, also with a new four-year deal, is the force’s longest serving deputy chief. ... Willie Wise still sitting in a San Francisco jail cell waiting to be sentenced for stealing millions from investors who got trapped in his Ponzi scheme. It has been more than two years since he pleaded guilty. Numerous dates for passing sentence have come and gone. At this rate, if he gets a rebate for time served they may owe Willie time. SPORTS STUFF Local connection to the Vanier Cup to be played in Montreal on the weekend. Kevin Aleinik, defensive tackle (No. 92) with McMaster, hails from the Lancaster area. He is the son of Linda and the late Terry Aleinik. The Holy Trinity grad is going for his second national championship ring. ... Owners in this league come and go but the River Kings must be setting some sort of record with their game of musical ownership chairs. They are up to four in two seasons.

Smoke and mirrors about taxes Dear Editor, etc. It’s time to say: stop cost increases. Cost in The total budget for the city of Cornwall from dollars tells the real story. If costs don’t go up, 2006 to 2014 went from $151 million to $180 taxes don’t go up. It is possible to “game” the budget by million, a 19% increase. The cost of living in that time period went allowing increases in operating costs and up 15%. That 4% difference meant $6M in reducing capital costs so the total does not change. Capital works though are required for 2014. For too long, politicians danced with words the future well-being of the City. The challenge like tax rate, mill rate, assessment changes, etc. is to cap the operating costs in spite of the very

generous wage increases imposed by provincial arbitrators. That may mean reduction in the services we receive. Question: Why do 2/3 of the City managers live in the townships? Why do the majority of firefighters live outside the City? People live in the townships for various reasons. One reason is lower taxes. Question: Are they receiving fewer services?

OPINION

Lihou was too soft on Rivette last week Ed Allard

PLUS TAXES AND LICENSING

What’s the price of openness and transparency at city hall? Well, so far, it’s $6,000. That’s the cost to taxpayers for André Rivette’s outing of a confidential agreement between the city and it’s union. All the details are in last week’s edition. In fact editor Todd Lihou’s column last week praised Rivette for the disclosure and for the newfound openness. I have a different take on the issue. Rivette is unapologetic; he knew he was stepping into forbidden territory, but he apparently believes that his personal opinion about what should or should not be disclosed trumps all other principles. And why would he want to apologize? After all, it’s cost him nothing and there are no other apparent consequences for him. We are the ones who are paying the freight, not that we have much choice in the matter. He’s just along for the ride. We also elected him for another term, so he’s basically fireproof until 2018. This was typical Rivette, thinking with his gut instead of his head and letting his emotions get the better of him. He’ll be the senior councillor around the table and, therefore, will be looked upon as a role model for the others. But it’s highly ironic that a guy who railed against the city’s legal payouts is actually adding to them. So, do as I say, not as I do. Some role model! There is a larger issue here than can have a significant impact on the city if matters are left unchecked. It’s called the law of unintended consequences. It boils down to a matter of trust. Our city, like all other governments, cannot avoid some degree of confidentiality in its

dealings. When the city signs an agreement it puts its reputation on the line and is expected to live up to all aspects of that agreement. Even if some aspects might not be palatable to everyone around the table. Having a rogue councillor who insists on playing by his own rules is going to send a chill through the corporation and its many partners. If I were a senior member of city staff I would be seriously considering how much confidential information I can safely share with city council. That alone can lead to a whole host of downstream problems. But the city is also frequently involved in discussions and negotiations with individuals, businesses, unions and other governments that may involve sensitive financial, property, legal or personnel issues. If city hall gains a reputation as a place that won’t respect its agreements or can’t keep its trap shut, then some of those partners could walk away and the city could miss out on opportunities that would make $6,000 look like chickenfeed. So I would hope the new council team is mindful of the potential consequences of too much openness. They will need to learn respect for the process and the interests of its various partners and take steps to ensure that all parties will respect city commitments. Disagreements are best sorted out in-house, not in the media. This must be a one-off that will not be repeated. After all, by electing them, we put our trust in them to provide ethical leadership. Those who work for the city or who must deal with the city at any point must also be able to trust them. And that’s the way I see it.

By the children, for the children adam.brazeau@tc.tc

Adam Brazeau

CORNWALL, Ontario - Rachel’s Kids Charter of Children’s Rights is now firmly planted on the walls of the Benson Centre. The charitable organization founded by Cornwall’s Dr. Rachel Navaneelan unveiled illustrations that represent all twelve rights on the charter with the fledgling artists and their parents, on Nov. 20. “The goal is simple: come together as a city to reach an agreement of the basic rights every child in our community should enjoy,” said Navaneelan. Rachel’s Kids has been working on this initiative for quite some time, both with the City of Cornwall and 10 community partners. The charity reached out to local agencies like Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Children’s Aid Society, as well as area schools, to recruit the illustrators. In perfect harmony with the multi-pad sports facility was Trinity Denneny’s drawing of a few young hockey players. “It’s important because some kids don’t get to play with the others,” said Denneny, 11. “We should all be able to play together.” Her mom, Sarah Dawson, praised Rachel’s Kids for helping to break barriers many children must face due to circumstances beyond their control. “I like that the kids are being taken seriously, no matter where they come from,” said Dawson. Navaneelan stressed that the purpose of the charter is not just to be plaques on a wall - it’s a challenge and a guide for Cornwall to do more for the next generation. “The charter contains rights that are for the benefit of our children, but I have to point out that these rights are the responsibility of us adults,” she said. The City of Cornwall has already endorsed the charter and has discussed using it as a pillar in strategic planning. “Everyone talks about youth when they campaign, but what does that mean?” said Councillorelect Bernadette Clement. “This kind of charter makes council focus on children’s rights and spells out in black and white what they need to have access to.” Rachel’s Kids intends to use it as a mandate for how they select and fund their projects. “We hope other organizations and community agencies will sign on too,” said Navaneelan. Some of the rights include: - The right to basic needs: Every child has the right to love and be loved, healthy food, clothes for all seasons, a safe home, clean air, water and earth. - The right to be heard: Every child has the right to his/her emotions and to share these feelings respectfully. To be heard and to listen to others. - The right to a nurturing home: Every child has the right to feel safe and loved in his/her home and to spend time with family and friends.

Pastor’s Perspective – Pastor John Scorgie True love goes way beyond simply having some good will toward others. True love takes action! This is not an exhaustive list in any way. True love reaches out to and cares for other people and their needs (Hebrews 6: 10). True love communicates and instructs other people in the truth (Ephesians 4: 15). True love sets a worthy example before others by sincerely serving them (Galatians 5: 13). True love is willing to look beyond another person’s faults (I Peter 4: 8). True love patiently endures the idiosyncrasies of other human beings around us (I Corinthians 13: 7). True love freely forgives the personal offenses of others (Ephesians 4: 32). True love willingly sacrifices time, energy and money for the sake of other people (John 15: 13-14). Surely, you are not satisfied with “playing games” and “wearing masks” on this matter of love. Surely, you would desire to be a clean channel through which God’s unconditional love for humanity is indisputably proven and undeniably confirmed by bold and kind actions! 5925875

If you are painting a small item, it helps to place it in a makeshift cubicle made of scrap cardboard. This will contain the paint spray inside. Tip 4: Remove Any Rust It is important to remove all rust before you spray paint a metal surface. For this purpose you can use sandpaper or a wire brush. Scrub out all the rust and then wipe the surface clean. Tip 5: Remove Grease and Dirt Clean the metal surface thoroughly beforehand. This will improve paint adhesion and finish. Use grease cutting cleaner to remove all accumulated grease. Also ensure that the surface is free of grime and dirt. Tip 6: Apply Primer Primer is very important when painting a metal surface. In the absence of primer, the paint will not adhere to metal. Also, there are more

chances of rust formation and peeling paint. Use a good quality primer that is compatible with metal and the paint you plant to use. Tip 7: Shake Can Well Shake the paint sprayer well and ensure that the paint is properly mixed up. Not doing so will cause uneven buildup of paint. Tip 8: Apply a Test Coat Before you apply paint on the metal object, spray a couple of coats on a scrap test object. Use something like a piece of cardboard. Check whether the paint lands evenly. Tip 9: Hold Can About 1 Foot Away from Object It is important to hold the spray paint can at the proper distance from the object. Holding it too close will result in thick coats and overlap, whereas holding it too far will result in uneven coverage. Tip 10: Spray in Thin Coats and Repeat if Necessary Avoid applying thick coats of spray paint. You can achieve better coverage by applying thin

Glass Shower Doors Sharon Fortier

owner/operator shar’s private cleaning services

Shar’s Tip of the Week Glass doors are a convenient additon but can quickly cloud up with soap scum. For some heavy-duty cleaning, try: Shaving cream: Squirt on the foam and wipe clean; the foam will leave a light film that keeps the doors from fogging and makes it harder for scum to stick. White vinegar: Keep a spray bottle in the shower so you can make washing down the surfaces part of your post-shower routine. Baking soda: Make a solution of 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/4 cup baking soda. Then scrub with a sponge. A small amount of vegetable oil poured onto a sponge or paper towel and applied to the doors after cleaning will prevent a build-up reoccuring.

(NC)—An affordable home renovation that is quick, easy, and saves you money can be hard to believe, but many homeowners may be surprised to learn how simple it really is. “Re–insulating your attic is a simple, easy project that can be completed in as little time as over a weekend, and can provide substantial short and long–term benefits,” says David Flood, insulation expert at Owens Corning.“By meeting the recommended standard of attic insulation, you can keep your home energy efficient and help save up to 28* per cent on heating and cooling bills.” Ensuring your attic insulation is topped up will help keep your home cool this summer and the newest innovation from Owens Corning, EcoTouch™ PINK™ FIBERGLAS® insulation batts are friendly to the environment too. New EcoTouch™ PINK™ insulation is made from natural**** materials and over 70*** per cent recycled content, the highest in the industry. Most importantly, by meeting the recommended standard of insulation in your attic you’ll help save up to a half ton** of greenhouse gas emissions year after year. To top up the insulation in your attic, follow these easy home renovation steps: 1. Measure the size of your attic and amount of existing insulation. To meet the recommended standard of R–50, install up to 15 inches of EcoTouch™ PINK™ FIBERGLAS® insulation. 2. Start at the outer edges of the attic and work your way in, placing batts perpendicular to the joists. Cut holes around vents and allow 3” of clearance around exhaust fans, chimneys and any heat–emitting objects and light fixtures. 3. Install Raft–R–Mate® attic rafter vents between rafters to provide unrestricted airflow through the soffits into the attic, reducing the risk of condensation.

Spray painting is a quick and easy way to paint metal surfaces. You can paint metal furniture, door knobs, cabinets and appliances. Spray painting provides a smooth, even finish that is very difficult to achieve with a paint brush. Below are some useful tips for spray painting metal surfaces. Tip 1: Work in a Ventilated Area For a metallic object, use a metallic finish spray paint. Because spray painting results in the emission of very fine particles of paint, it is important to prevent excessive inhalation. Open all windows and close the door to the room in which you are painting. Wear a pair of gloves to avoid getting paint on your hands. Tip 2: Clean the Work Area Spray painting will give best results if the surrounding temperature, humidity and windiness are under control. Avoid working in freezing temperatures, excessive wind and high humidity. For best results, you must thoroughly clean the surrounding area, or else dust particles can fly around and settle on the painted surface when it

OPINION

Canada must do much more to stop global warming Opinion Column – Sultan Jessa Canada is left with no choice but to change its stubborn policy on fighting global warming. The Ottawa Tories will have to act and act quickly in light of most recent events. The United States and China, two of the major polluters in the world, have signed what

many call the “giant leap for mankind.” The two powerful countries signed a landmark accord towards a global climate deal in Paris. This deal is aimed at curbing carbon emissions and takes the world closer to preventing dangerous warming of more than 2C. Some of the world’s best and most respected scientists say that if temperatures rise

beyond 2C above pre-industrial levels, the effects of climate change will be far more dangerous. To keep warming below that level, the world will have to drastically reduce its emissions, the scientists say. An increase in global average temperature greater than 2C above pre-industrial levels would result in further melting of glaciers and

Fast approaching our 2 year mark, and what a great ride it has been! Thanks to you, our loyal customers. We reported to you last year that we we’re expanding our showroom, and due to a huge success, we our presently undergoing yet another expansion! This will permit us not only to showcase more of our very unique hand crafted pieces, but also, we now have our warehouse attached to our showroom for easier access and even better customer service. Owner, Guy St-Jean, continues to design our unique, one of a kind pieces, which are all hand crafted by our hand -picked staff in India. Why India you ask? It was a way that Neo Vintage Furniture can offer its clients beautifully crafted, handmade unique pieces at affordable prices. The woods we use are an Indian Rosewood called Sheesham, as well as Mango Wood. Both are very hard, durable woods, with breath taking grains to them. The combination of wood and iron creates an industrial, vintage look to our products, all why being durable and practical. It’s been very interesting to hear how are clients are using our products. For example, we have a 4 drawer wood and iron kitchen cart that some clients have purchased as a piece for their front entrance, while others have it at their place of business as a coffee station. Others are using it as a TV stand, and some, as a work space in their kitchen. Our reputation is also of one for having conversation piece type furniture. Recently, in our latest shipment, we received our Round Iron Bar. It’s certainly caused quite a

stir among our visitors in the showroom …by looking at it, it looks like a big round iron black ball on legs….however, when you open it up, it’s a unique bar complete with shelves, glass holders and storage for bottles. Our website has also recently been revamped, adding the Wish List feature. This will be a great tool for Brides, Birthdays and of course, Christmas. We at Neo Vintage Furniture pride ourselves on our customer service. We want our clients to have an “experience” when entering our showroom. As many of our Ottawa and Montreal clients have shared, we offer a big city feel with small town charm. There is no sales pressure here, just simply a friendly smiling face, proud to show off our products. Drop by the stunning Neo Vintage showroom to get a feel for what just one of their pieces could do for your space. It really must be seen in person. Open TuesdayFriday, 9:30-5:30, Saturday, 10-5; and Sunday, 11-5. Neo Vintage Furniture Inc. is located at Highway 138 at Cornwall Centre Road. Call 613-935-5558 for further information or visit www.neovintagefurniture.ca or on Facebook, and Twitter.

Arctic ice, continued rising sea levels, more frequent and extreme weather events, difficulties for agriculture and changes in plant and animal life. This deal was unveiled in Beijing. The United States agreed to double the rate at which it is reducing its carbon emissions while China set a ceiling on its emissions for the first time, vowing to reduce them from 2030. Many environmentalists believe the US-China accord provides a badly needed political momentum towards the Paris summit at which world leaders are supposed to agree a binding emissions-reduction deal. Then there was the G-20 summit in Australia. Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott like Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper does not have a reputable record on climate change. The US President Barack Obama put the Australian prime minister on the spot during the meeting of the world’s largest economies. Obama talked about Australia’s reluctance to tackle global warming head-on. The US president also pledged $3 billion to the Green Climate Fund, an international fund that helps poorer countries adapt to global warming. Let us not forget that it was the Harper government which pulled Canada out of the first global climate change agreement, the Kyoto Accord. The majority of Canadians want something done about global warming. With the next federal election scheduled for next year – it may come much earlier than expected – Harper’s government will have no choice but to make a much stronger commitment on global warming. In the past Harper has insisted Canada cannot act alone. With the accord between the United States and China, Ottawa has no excuse.

I’m Jon and, as the Energy East Pipeline project’s community relations lead for Ontario, I’ve had the chance to travel across the province several times over and meet community members along the route. In that time, I’ve gotten to know them, listened to their concerns, and experienced their excitement firsthand. At the more than 40 open houses I’ve attended, I’ve heard how they look forward to the new jobs, tax revenues and economic opportunities that the pipeline will provide. We’re working together to build something we’re all proud of and that depends on everyone having a voice.

RADON MITIGATION

What is radon?

Radon is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that is naturally occurring in the environment. Low concentrations of radon are safe. However, high concentrations of radon cause cancer. Some level of radon is found in nearly all indoor air.

KEY FACTS

v Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after tobacco. v Exposure to high concentrations of radon is responsible for 13% of lung cancers in Ontario. v Radon is naturally occurring and can be found in almost all air, including in homes, offices, schools and any other indoor environments. v A 2011 Health Canada study found approximately 5% of buildings tested positive for radon concentrations more than four times the safe levels.

Rosacea using Limelight or Laser Genesis Laser Treatments. Laser Genesis The Laser Genesis procedure utilizes noninvasive laser technology to safely, discretely and effectively diffuse excessive redness. You can expect to see subtle yet consistent results after each skin therapy treatment, without unwanted side effects such as bruising or excessive skin irritation. Treatments can be performed in a relaxed, comfortable manner without the use of topical anesthetics or gel. Limelight Limelight is perfect for the treatment of skin redness and rosacea. It is a noninvasive approach to skin rejuvenation. The procedure offers the advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with aging and photo-damage. The Limelight treatment shrinks the tiny vessels causing the diffuse redness and dramatically improves the outcome of redness and rosacea.

What can you do?

Test your home for radon, it’s easy! A radon testing kit can be purchased from your local hardware store. The kit should be placed in the home for three to six months during the time that most windows and doors are closed (fall/winter). The kit will need to be sent to a lab to receive the test results. The lab submission is included in most kits.

How does radon get into homes?

Radon is released into the air as soil and rocks containing uranium naturally breakdown. Outdoor the released radon is quickly dispersed and levels remain very low. However, when radon enters buildings through foundations, joints and vents it may build up in concentration. This is particularly true in basements which are often poorly ventilated.

The perfect day to sleep well In a society where work and the struggle to succeed dominate our daily life, a good night’s sleep has become a rare luxury. Did you know that you will have spent a third of your life asleep by the time you reach the age of 75? Amazing but true! To get all the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of sleep, an adult should get an average of seven to eight hours of it per night, while a teenager needs about nine or ten hours of sleep. If you get any less than that amount, you risk suffering the effects of lack of sleep. Those can include weight gain, impaired concentration and job performance, relationship difficulties, or even depression. In other words, sleeping well is absolutely essential to your health. Your sleeping environment should meet certain criteria in order for you to sleep well. The first step is to establish an evening routine that you follow daily, including weekends. In the hours before going to bed, don’t consume any stimulants such as coffee, alcohol, tobacco, and sugar, and avoid eating filling snacks. The temperature of the bedroom should be kept at around 18°C. The room should be completely dark, and noise — the main contributor to sleep disturbance — should be limited as much as possible. Relaxing for around 30 minutes before going to bed is also a good idea. Avoid computer screens, video games, television, and intellectually demanding activities. And, whatever you do, don’t fight drooping eyelids!

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease that causes facial redness and most often appears on the cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead. At first, the redness may come and go, but over time, it can become more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear. If it is left untreated, bumps and pimples may develop. Rosacea affects mostly adults, usually people with fair skin, candace between the ages of 30 and 60. Although it’s more common in women, men may develop more apparent signs of the disorder. It’s not lifethreatening, but it can affect your appearance and lower your self-esteem. Millions of men and women are affected by rosacea and if you’re one of them, Vitalglow can help! Vitalglow can treat mild to severe Rosacea

Some couples turn to surgical sterilization as a means for preventing future pregnancies. Men who elect such an option will undergo a vasectomy, which prevents sperm from reaching the ejaculate fluid, thus rendering the man infertile. It’s important to note that the procedure is not entirely foolproof. Pregnancies after vasectomy have been reported, and such instances occur when sperm finds an alternate route into vas deferens, the ducts that carry the sperm to the ejaculatory ducts. Also, after having a vasectomy, it may take several weeks and ejaculations before there are no more viable and mobile sperm left in semen. Men who undergo the vasectomy procedure are urged to return to their doctors six weeks later for a semen analysis to check for live sperm before having intercourse. Otherwise, there is the risk for pregnancy.

Kilger weighing cancer treatment options with doctors Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger is once again fighting cancer. In an interview with Seaway News the mayor, who has less than a week in office before a new city council and mayor-elect Leslie O’Shaughnessy is sworn in on Monday, said the cancer was detected in his colon. He got word of the diagnosis during the election, but is still discussing treatment options with his doctors. “I’m going to face it with optimism,” Kilger said. “I’m going to kick butt on this too.” Kilger is no stranger to defeating the disease. His time in office included being treated for stomach cancer, though he pointed out the diagnoses are unrelated. “This is a brand new cancer,” he said, urging

others to complete regular colonoscopies, which led to the detection of his particular illness. “You can never underestimate getting these things done. “Early detection can lead to early treatment, and early treatment can lead to a better quality of life.” Kilger was advised of the diagnosis at about the mid-point of the recent municipal election, but kept the news quiet, including from his family until after the race was finished. “There was nothing that could be done at that time frame,” he said. “I’m feeling fine. I feel very good.” While the specifics of the treatment have not been spelled out, surgery, chemo therapy or a combination of the two after often employed. The decision to add chemotherapy in management of colon and rectal cancer depends on the stage of the disease.

Kilger has not issued any media releases on the diagnosis and confirmed there won’t be any in the future. Early detection of colon cancer is key in

Bridge demo company pays for damage after car hit by debris: motorist Daniele Breau Special to Seaway News

CORNWALL, Ontario - The company demolishing the Seaway International Bridge forked over hundreds of dollars in repairs after a Cornwall woman’s car was dinged by falling debris. Julie Lebrun’s brand new Kia Optima was hit by falling debris, perhaps a piece of cement, while she was driving on Second Street West a few weeks ago. The result was $1,200 in body work that needed to be done to fix the massive dent in the roof and damage to the windsheild. She was also compensated for the $450 it cost

she said. “He was so nice and he took full responsibility and he apologized to me in person and I had no problem,” said Lebrun. MacDonald could not be reached for comment. The intersection at Second Street West and Brookdale Avenue had been partially closed for several days to keep vehicles away from demolition work that was taking place directly overhead. The intersection was reopened Wednesday at around noon.

for her to rent a car while her Optima was repaired. “They were taking a part of the road off the bridge and they only had a black net with holes in (it) to catch what can possibly fall,” she said in an interview. “I was thinking holy crap what was that? What just happened? I thought something hit my windshield but it did not. Instead it made a dent on the roof of my car near the windshield with two huge scratches.” Lebrun said after contacting her insurance company she called Demo Plus, the firm demolishing the bridge. Steven MacDonald, owner of Demo Plus, took responsibility for the damage,

Julie Lebrun and her Kia Optima before the incident that saw a piece of debris from the Seaway International Bridge dent the roof of the car.

CANDLELIGHT REMEMBRANCE SERVICE Wednesday, December 10th 7:00 pm

KNOX ST. PAUL’S UNITED CHURCH

800 12th Street East, Cornwall, Ontario

Guest Speaker Barry MacDonald

For many, the approaching Holiday Season is anything but Merry, especially if you’ve experienced the death of a loved one. Bereaved Families of Ontario - Cornwall & Area invite you & your family to their Annual Candlelight Remembrance Service.

December 31, 2014 Featuring Unwound • 9pm- 1am Buffet@ Midnight

Semi- Formal

Dream Maker Productions brings to the stage “Frozen” - the story of two sisters, who have to come to terms with the fact that you can’t run away from your problems; that sometimes you have to ask for help from people. But even more important, it is a story of the love shared between two sisters, and a bond that can’t be broken despite any hardships that come their way. The production tells the story of Anna (Natalie Carroll) on a dangerous and whimsical quest to save her sister The Snow Queen (Elizabeth O’Connor), before she is trapped forever in the palace of snow and ice. Joining Anna in this quest is the young hero, played by Cameron Brunet along with his trusty reindeer (Morgan Aitkens). The protagonist is played by Jasper Ross who is seeking the throne with the help of the evil Duke (Jana Hickman).

Tickets on Sale Nov 29- Members $35.00 per couple Dec.6- Non-Members $45.00 per couple

“After years of doing many of the old classics this is one of the newest shows we have done since High School Musical,” said director Richard Boyer. “We have put together an excellent cast, and an exciting show that is suitable for the whole family.” The show features a talented cast that brings this endearing story to life with imagination, music, special f/x and a unique set. This lively performance will captivate the audience as they participate and follow the cast through their adventures. Treat your children this Christmas to an affordable family show and a great live theatre experience. Show dates are Dec. 6 and 7 at St. Lawrence Secondary School with shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available in advance at Melody Music. At an all-candidates meeting for the past municipal election a local resident, Jacqueline Milner, caught my attention; she was clearly frustrated by the candidates’ evasive stance on the widespread deforestation of the landscape. “Since I came here in 1999 I have seen huge expanses of treed landscapes stripped bare,” she said. “Hedgerows are being completely ripped out, leaving vast spreads of mono-culture corn and soy.” “Those hedgerows are needed to feed, house and provide cover for wildlife. Pollinators, birds, foxes and butterflies depend on the rows of bushes, grasses and trees between acreages to find cover and food among the vast monocultured landscapes.” “When we do not leave habitat necessary for the growth and protection of our various species, we risk losing them. That affects the richness of our own lives.” “Why are farmers changing their use of the land? The simple answer..... money.” “In an ideal world all people would inherently understand that we are all intricately connected, that the well-being and health of each habitat and life form is essential to the health of all life forms. Habitats would be respected and considered before dollars. To consider and respect the concept of co-flourishing is a win, win, win situation.” “I don’t think anyone appreciates having laws imposed upon them about what they can do with their property. However, if landowners are mismanaging their properties in such a way that fouls the water, poses a hazard to life and/ or natural habitats, I would hope that our municipal representatives stand ready to use all the powers accorded to them to swiftly rectify the situation.” “We can encourage farmers and landowners to leave a certain percentage of their property treed and to maintain buffer zones around waterways. We could encourage them with tax breaks to maintain old growth forest, buffer zones and hedgerows. Conservation authorities recommend leaving at least 30% of the

land wild and treed. It’s a necessity for our continued health and well-being.” “We should plant and maintain trees, bushes and flowers that nourish, feed and provide cover for our wildlife. We should insure there is a healthy buffer zone left around waterways so that run-off from business and farming operations does not foul up water habitats and that area wildlife can drink in peace and under cover. Water is vital to all life. Good stewardship would inspire others and be appreciated by the generations who will inherit what we leave behind.” “Without trees, life is, in many cases, not possible. Trees provide us with shade, cover, food, fuel and oxygen. They cool our homes, provide us with wind breaks, help guide wind direction and speed, help with the production of rain fall, prevent soil erosion, absorb C02 and provide us with a sense of well-being. “At an election meeting I heard my township mayor say that he would not now or ever support a bylaw restricting tree-cutting. My response to that is, if our area landowners and farmers cannot be respectful land stewards in maintaining the forest cover necessary to allow us to flourish, then how can our municipality serve its citizens in good conscience, if it is not willing to use the power it has to rectify the situation?” Without a doubt, Jacqueline Milner’s statements are sure to stir up some strong feelings on both sides of the hedgerow.

Kudos to Nik, owner of Zorbas restaurant for making sure a very young orphaned fox gets a meal of meat and milk whenever it shows up. Gladdens the heart to know he is helping a young animal to survive instead of letting nature take its course.

I found myself in a pub in Cork. A group of American tourists came in. One of the Americans said, in a loud voice, “I hear you Irish think your great drinkers. I bet 5,000 euros that no-one here can drink 30 pints of Guinness in 30 minutes.” The bar was silent, the American noticed one Irishman leaving, no-one took up the bet. 40 minutes later the Irishman who left returned and said “Hey Yank, is your wee bet still on?” “Sure” said the American, “30 pints in 30 minutes for a bet of 5,000 euros.” “Grand, “ replied the Irishman, “so pour the pints and start the clock.” It was very close but the last drop was consumed with 2 seconds to spare. “OK Yank, pay up.” said the Irishman.. “I’m happy to pay, here’s your money” said the American. “But tell me, when I first offered the wager I saw you leave. Where did you go?’ The Irishman replied, “Well sir, 5,000 euros is a lot of money to a man like me, so I went to the pub across the road to see if I could do it.”
