TRAFFIC JAMMED: More headaches coming for Second West, in addition to other congestion CORNWALL, Ontario - If you thought some of the traffic headaches in Cornwall these days were tough, it’s going to get a whole lot worse in a couple of weeks. In addition to several pockets of road work being done across the city, Second Street West near the Seaway International Bridge will be shuttered beginning Nov. 10. Residents in the west end will face detours as crews continue to

remove decking from the bridge that is in the process of being demolished. At the corner of Second and Brookdale Avenue there’s already lane reductions and much gnashing of teeth from motorists trying to navigate the busy intersection amidst the chaos. Steve Wintle, the city’s infrastructure planning manager, said the closure could last up to three weeks. Andre Girard, the Federal Bridge Corporation’s spokesperson, said the plan is to close the street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. He added the street closure could be

extended, depending on the depth of the work. Motorists eastbound on Second Street could be detoured up Hoople Avenue to Seventh Street in their attempt to leave the Riverdale neighbourhood. And that’s not all. The construction work being done on Marlborough Street in Cornwall, part of a $5-million sewer reconstruction, is expected to continue until snow blankets the Seaway City before resuming next year. “We’re going to try to get to Fifth Street (before winter),”Wintle said, adding the street will be opened for the winter. The sewer reconstruction includes augmenting the system to ease the pressure on flood-ravaged parts of the city in the GrandMiron area. Additional outflow capacity is being created along much of Marlborough Street. Over on a busy Ninth Street motorists are contending with construction crews that are still adding the capacity for more left-turning lanes adjacent to a new plaza that includes a grocery store, dollar store and fast-food restaurant. Second Street East is being modified to allow for more bike lanes, while reducing the amount of real estate for motorized traffic.

MYA’S MISSION: Young Cornwall girl to have brain surgery to remove NF2 tumour CORNWALL, Ontario - Mya Jackson is just like any other Cornwall five-year-old - with one major difference. She bounces around the living room, moving from Ipad to television with lightning-like speed and soaking up all the fun of an occasion like Halloween. But unlike the balance of her five-year-old friends, Mya has a date with a brain surgeon in a

few weeks to remove a massive brain tumour that has attached itself to her frontal lobe. Her condition is part of a rare disease known as NF2 - an inherited ailment that leads to the formation of tumours in the brain and parts of the nervous system. She has other tumours near her ear, and on her spine, but the one attacking her brain is of special significance. “In the space of three months it grew 50 per cent,” said her mother Tanya Lamarche. “It has to

come out between now and Christmas.” Little Mya, due to her age and because Lamarche wants to spare her daughter the worry by explaining the specifics of the procedure, doesn’t fully comprehend what’s in store for her. “I just haven’t had the heart to tell her,” said Lamarche. “She knows she has a bo-bo in her head.” The surgery comes with some significant pitfalls and risks. Mya will lose her sense of smell and taste and her vision and hearing could be impacted as well. But perhaps most compelling is that the surgery could result in some personality changes too. “That was the hardest part,” said Lamarche. “You don’t know what you’re going to get afterwards.” The tumours are not cancerous, but their growth creates problems, especially in confined places like the human skull. The growth of Mya’s tumour is leading to fluid buildup and other complications. Lamarche is waiting for an upcoming doctor’s appointment to determine when Mya’s surgery will take place and what kind of procedure will be done. It’s most likely doctors will open her skull to remove the tumour - but there’s also a possibility that they could go in through her nose. Lamarche is understandably stressed. “Really you don’t expect it to be you,” she said. “You think it’s going to be in another person’s

Mya Jackson and her mother Tanya Lamarche. family.” She added the rare occurrences of NF2 have led to quizzical looks from the small number of people who know Mya is sick, and even some doctors have been confused by her condition. “I don’t even think the people who live around here,” she said, gesturing to the neighbourhood from her Briarhill home, “know that Mya has this. No one knows what it is.” A fundraiser is being planned for the family, with details to come soon. In the meantime, Lamarche and Mya are preparing as best they can. “She is just so happy and loves life,” said Lamarche. A Facebook page for Mya has been created and can be found here. Lamarche can also be reached at tan759298@yahoo.ca.

election,” he said. Kilger said the municipal election reminded him of the 2004 federal campaign that saw him defeated by current Tory MP Guy Lauzon. “Maybe there was a lot more going on on social media than I might have been aware,” he said. “There a couple of times when I thought ‘This is a strange campaign.’ “(But) there’s a very familiar ring to it. There was that possibility. Any time I talked about it with my campaign manager and our volunteers…we had predetermined what kind of campaign we would run and how we would conduct it. And we always came back to that.” Kilger has had a rich run as a public figure. He’s a veteran NHL official, and a Memorial Cup champion that coached the talent-rich 1981 Cornwall Royals to the title. He followed that up as a restaurant manager at St-Hubert in Cornwall, before winning the local Liberal nomination in the late 1980s and parlaying that move into a lengthy term of office on Parliament Hill, including a stint as deputy speaker of the House of Commons.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A pair of two-term mayors who were denied a chance to threepeat have no regrets following a pair of failed campaigns. Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger and his counterpart in South Stormont, Bryan McGillis, were both shown the door last week during municipal elections that, in the Seaway City especially, saw some major shifts in the political landscape. The disappointment that both men feel is still tangible, but they also agree there’s no time for sour grapes. “I fully accept the outcome and the decisions made by the citizens of Cornwall to effect change,” Kilger said in an office at city hall that has been his home for eight years. In just a matter of weeks Mayor-elect Leslie O’Shaughnessy will be the new tenant. “I feel good about my record and what I’ve been a part of.” McGillis likewise suggested his township is on a solid foundation. He was defeated by Mayor-elect Jim Bancroft who returns to office following an eight-year absence. “Our future is bright because the people of

South Stormont have come together and done so much we can all be proud of,” McGillis said. “As someone who embraces democracy, I accept that the people have spoken.” Neither man has immediate plans for the future. McGillis has been approached by a couple of groups about doing some work for them, but he’s not yet ready to make a specific decision. He’s mulling another campaign in 2018. Kilger suggested after nearly 24 years in public life as not only mayor of Cornwall, but MP for the region years ago, it’s time to retire. “I knew this would always be my last campaign, and I wanted to be true to myself,” he said. “I’m not going to run again. For no office at any time.” Both men spoke in generalities about what cost them the election. McGillis, when pressed on the point, suggested “false statements” were made during the election that could have cost him some votes. But he wanted to make it clear he was not second-guessing the electorate. “In the last eight years I’ve had the honour to serve this community…I want to sincerely thank the people who supported me in this

Plowing match agreement signed for 2015 event CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s official. Organizers of the 2015 Stormont Dundas & Glengarry International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) have signed an agreement with the Ontario Plowmen’s Association (OPA) to host the event. Melvin Switzer, OPA president, and a number of county directors from across the province were on hand for the signing. There was a rally-like atmosphere in the banquet hall of the Finch arena as the kickoff was indeed a countdown to the 2015 IPM which will take place a few kilometers north of Finch in less than 11 months. IPM chair Jim3 Brownell said upwards of 200 volunteers and community leaders who attended the event, that while the paper work is now in place, many volunteer hours and commitment to the event really began in early 2012. “When I was asked to be chair of the IPM committee in March 2012, shortly after the bid was accepted by the Ontario Plowmen’s

Association, I can tell you there was already a dedicated group in place ready to make this IPM the best one yet,” he said. Cathy Lasby, executive director of the Ontario Plowmen’s Association congratulated the volunteers on the organization and hard work that has already been done. “When you come into this county you can feel the buzz,” she said. “You can feel it already. And it spreads very quickly.” Also unveiled to hails of enthusiasm were mock ups of two billboard –sized signs soon to be installed on County Road 43 highway west of Finch and at the IPM site on Concession road 2-3 and County Road 12. The level of support for the IPM from the local business community was evident. Corporate partner Shane’s Signs of Crysler provided not only the site signage but a number of other services and products at cost or as in-kind donations. Equally enthusiastic is volunteer Todd

Helmer who heads up the signage committee. “I’m in awe of the graphics on the signs,” he said of the work of local graphic designer and volunteer Colleen Parette. “She did such a great job of depicting our region and our logo, Link to the Past, Look to the Future,” he said. “The images and colours in her art work really reflect

us and our ties to agriculture.” Delaney Bus lines of Avonmore, a long-time corporate partner of the IPM, has also worked with designer Colleen Parette and Shane’s Signs to wrap one of its Ottawa commuter buses with the same design work. It will hit the road this week.

Big Brothers /Big Sisters recognizes young leaders ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - What started as a way to give a troubled teen a role model became an unbreakable bond between Big brother Corey Willard and his Little, Nick Brisebois. Willard, 26, was named Big Brother of the Year at the Ramada Inn on Nov. 1. The coveted accolade was one of many awards presented at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District 41st annual

banquet, including Big sister of the Year which went to Carilyne Hebert. The Willard and Brisebois stood beside each other at the podium as Willard, a Cornwall native who moved to Ottawa where he now works in a law firm, delivered a powerful impromptu acceptance speech. At first glance it was hard to know which one was the Big brother. Now, 18, Nick is basically the same height as Willard, but he’ll always look up to him. That will never change. “One of the first things I wanted to do

when I turned 18 was to become a Big Brother, because I had two sisters,” said Willard as the crowd laughed. He continued: “So I went over to the office and I remember seeing a wall and I’ll never forget that day. There must have been 90 pictures. I asked, what is that? And they said, ‘oh those are people who are waiting to be matched.’ And to this day I understand the list is about the same. Willard encouraged the crowd to reach out to their fellow colleagues to help get that list down to zero.

“So I jumped on board. And how cool - I get to choose my little brother,” he said. “We’ve had an interesting experience. I think I’ve learned more than Nick has and I can tell you that, I still don’t know if I want kids. Why would you want kids if you can have a brother?” Hebert told the audience at the banquet that her six years as a Big Sister has been a rewarding experience. She is paired with Monica Saucier. The littles of the year were Patrick Gauthier and Brandy Cameron.

Mrs. G. couldn’t use her left hand. Her doctor told her to take Tylenol to control the pain until she could see a rheumatologist, in six weeks. Controlling the pain with Tylenol didn’t seem right. Mrs. G.’s hand was red and extremely swollen around the two middle knuckles. There was a lot of pain, especially at night, and the only thing that seemed to relieve the shooting pain was soaking her hand in cold water. Dre Sabine Chahwan will be available She took the remedy Ledum every hour the first day Tuesday, November 11th from 11am-1pm then reduced the dosage to three times per day. By for more information the fifth day she felt 90% better and the swelling had disappeared. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease. So two people with the same problem may 5 Ninth St. E. (at Pitt) require different remedies. Cornwall 613-938-7339 5789425

We Will Remember: Legion has launched poppy campaign Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - While Canada unites for Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, the soldier killed in the shootings at Parliament Hill on Oct. 22, Cornwall’s war veterans are handing out thousands of little red badges of honour for Rememberance Day. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 visited Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger’s office on Oct. 23 to announce the start of their annual poppy campaign, which began on Halloween. “It’s very important that we all pin a poppy to our lapels in memory of those who have fallen in war, and in aid of those who have fought and continue to fight today,” said Hugh Primeau Sr., campaign chair. Legion reps will be out front of local retail shops and grocery markets daily selling poppies from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Tuesday, Nov. 11. Many convenience stores, as well as The Beer Store and the LCBO, throughout the city and

area will have small stations where people can pick up a poppy. Every elementary school and high school in Cornwall will also receive their own batch. Any donation is welcomed. “It’s not how much they give - as long as they give something. It’s the overall total that makes the difference,” said Primeau Sr. In 2011, the campaign raised $47,000. The funds will help aging veterans and their widows pay for their health care bills. It will also assist a therapy dog program for Afghanistan veterans suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Jack Rowden, Legion member and Korean War vet, added that the secret to a successful campaign is to distribute so that the entire community can wear a poppy on Nov. 11. Plans for Remembrance Day include a solemn march by Legion members from the branch headquarters at Second and Cumberland streets to the cenotaph a few blocks away, where wreaths will be laid. For more information, call the Legion’s poppy office at (613) 933-6161.

JUST IN TIME FOR WINTER

OPINION

We have the power now to examine electric billing Todd Lihou

So what do we do about this? Good question. There is a move afoot, among some councillors who kept their jobs following last week’s municipal election, who want administration to find out how changes to the current power supply environment in Cornwall could be impacted in the years to come. In fact, they want the negotiation started sooner rather than later. And I have to agree with them – let’s get the ball rolling on this thing now. There is a very real concern from some that if Cornwall Electric is forced to purchase its power from, say, Hydro One those relatively affordable utility bills we’ve grown accustomed to could disappear in a quick whiff of ozone. Doomsayers suggest we could be left with bills that are as much as double (maybe even more) compared to what we are used to. Experts in the industry suggest that will never happen – but even a moderate increase will result in some squawking. The good news is we have plenty of time to address the situation. Could an agreement be reached to stick with Hydro-Quebec beyond the deadline that looms? Could a deal be found to purchase power from another Ontario utility that isn’t as expensive as Hydro One? Would such a utility have enough capacity for us here

todd.lihou@tc.tc

Don’t shoot the messenger. Cornwall Electric customers in the Seaway City and some parts of South Glengarry have become accustomed to low utility rates (relatively speaking) that just about everyone else in Ontario wishes they could access. There is a fear, though, that the end of the electric gravy train could be on the horizon. The current contract Cornwall Electric has to purchase power from Hydro-Quebec , not to mention the expiration of provisions contained in a contract the utility has with the Ontario Energy Board, both expire at the end of this decade. The agreement with Hydro-Quebec spells out how much is paid to purchase their product, while the paperwork with the OEB recognizes Cornwall’s uniqueness as an area that has a utility that purchases power from outside the province, among other things. The fact that they are both set to expire at the end of the decade has some city councillors worried, because we’ve all heard the wailing from Hydro One customers in this province about the skyrocketing bills and customer service headaches experienced with the provincial utility.

in Fun City? Would Hydro One give us a break on its exorbitant rates because we haven’t been connected to its infrastructure? They’re all good questions, and we have plenty of time to find the answers…if we start now. This should be a priority of the new city council that will officially take office Dec. 1. Sure, much has been made of transparency, accountability and other mom and apple issues that invariably get mentioned during an election campaign. But when it comes down to it, property owners in Cornwall want to know how much lighter their wallet will be at the end of the month.

City council has an obligation to get answers on this issue as quickly as possible, on behalf of Cornwall Electric customers. There is a strong working relationship between city hall and the Cornwall Electric offices on Sydney Street. By the end of this term, in 2018, it might be too late to effectively negotiate on this subject – which is why we should be examining the issue now. We’re not suggesting a conference call needs to be convened within the next 48 hours, but let’s at least begin asking some questions – because if we get word that hydro bills are skyrocketing by 2020, those city council members who get elected in 2018 may not be so lucky in 2022.

Too many people sat on their hands for the election

scale that unfolded last week. In fact, I naively wrote some weeks ago that unless there was a big uptick in the number of voters, we wouldn’t see many new faces. Kick that crystal ball to the curb! The good news is that the new council will be more representative of our local demographic. Just 25 per cent of Cornwall’s adult population are senior citizens, but they comprise more than 70 per cent of the current council. That

We voted for change and, with a new mayor and a 50% turnover at the council table, that’s what we got – well, on the face of it anyway. Election challengers have been promising change for eons. We’ll see what this group can deliver. We’ll have a chance to revisit that in four years. I expected some turnover but not on the

proportion has now been noticeably reduced. It was a natural and healthy evolution. Ironically, it was probably seniors themselves who contributed to some of that. The number of women increased to three, which is still well below their 52 per cent share of the electorate. There were some good people below the cut as well, but overall the new council should have more in common with Cornwall’s population. I think there’s a lot of potential. Whether it will materialize will depend on how well they work together and how they handle some of the trickier files coming their way. If being a councillor were dead easy, there would never be any controversy. But that’s not often the case. The whistleblowing issues aren’t entirely done; there’s still some mopping up required. We’ll see what a new perspective will bring. Policies for city personnel and for council itself will likely come under a microscope. Fluoridation will be coming back to the table. The waterfront is an active file and will soon require some critical decisions. I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of pigeons and geese, either, whether we like that or not. I’m told the pay raise will be sent to the dumpster, but something will likely replace it before the next election. The Courtauld’s condo project might be back for another try under some new rules, as will a debate on development fees. Union contract issues are never far

from the table, nor is budget-making. And, of course, they’ll have to hire a new CAO, which will set the tone for the staff. So, there’ll be a learning curve for sure, but even the old hands had to learn the ropes once. It’s fair to say the current council has lost the confidence of the electorate and should not be deciding any of these items before Dec. 1. But the results weren’t all good news. The number of voters dropped to barely 40 per cent of the electorate, down from 43 per cent in 2010 and 54 per cent in 2006. Just two out of every 10 eligible voters chose our new mayor. That’s hardly a ringing endorsement. After hearing so many people ramble on about how the city was going to the dogs and the critical need for big change, it was a huge letdown to learn that so few of us could find the energy to show some interest. In the end, a handful of voters opted for change – the vast majority sat on their hands. This isn’t unique to Cornwall. I realize many people have no interest in local politics or lead very busy lives. The same trend exists in other municipalities, not to mention other developed democracies around the world. But democracy needs citizen input to work properly. Voting is one of the responsibilities of citizenship; walking away doesn’t make things better. And that’s the way I see it.

Some thoughts on the campaign trail Claude McIntosh

EDITOR’S NOTE: Please wELcome Claude McIntosh back to the fold at Seaway News. After ‘Mac’ is sworn in as a city councillor next month his column will change slightly. He’ll be shelving the political speak, but his column will continue.

* A wise man, speaking about a successful candidate, once said, “He kept all the promises he intended to keep.” ***** Ron Joyce, co-founder of Tim Horton’s, said no when asked to kickstart the Ed Lumley Bursary, set up by the University of Windsor, with a $1 million donation. Instead, Joyce sat down and wrote out a cheque for $10 million. The bursary is in recognition of Lumley’s commitment to U of W and his native Windsor-Essex. The former Cornwall mayor and Stormont-Dundas MP is the university’s chancellor. The fund will provide financially challenged students (most are) from Windsor-Essex with up to $8,000 a year to study at U of W. Said Lum: “We know these students have the potential to impact society in a positive way and this is a chance for them to focus on their studies and activities and worry less about finances.” Lumley and Joyce, the former Hamilton cop who helped establish the coffee/doughnut empire, are long-time pals. ***** IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR: The Cornwall Street Railway Light & Power Co. barns on Water Street, between Pitt and Sydney streets. ... The 142room Cornwallis Hotel at 22 Second St. W. with its majestic lobby and thick red carpet. The magnificient ball room later named after Queen Elizabeth. Bellhops decked out in red jackets and those funnylooking pillbox hats, and elevator attendants who wore uniforms and spotless white gloves. The

Crooked Stovepipe with Maggie Terrance decked out in a straw hat and playing the piano. The Glengarry Lounge and men’s draught room. ... The 1980s Top Dog hot dog stand at Second and Cumberland streets (northeast corner) that was shaped like a giant hot dog. One city councillor complained that it was an “eyesore.” TRIVIA: This Prime Minister laid the cornerstone of Simon Fraser Public Library. On the same day a Canadian premier who would become leader of the federal Progressive Conservatives officially opened a technical library, a gift from 20 city industries. Who were they? THIS AND THAT: Sears is closing its store in Massena’s St. Lawrence Center. The once busy shopping centre is fading away. ... Mayor Bob Kilger was greeted with a loud chorus of boos when he was introduced at River Kings game during the campaign. It must have brought back memories of refereeing in Boston and Philly. At least this hockey crowd didn’t throw anything but catcalls. ... The 39th president of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) is Derek Sprague, general manager/director of golf at Malone Golf and Country Club. Sprague is a native of Malone. ... A Cornwall success story, Laframboise Mechanical, has purchased the former Combusion Engineering property. ... The upcoming two to three-week closing of the Second Street/Brookdale Avenue intersection to westbound and eastbound traffic has the potential for a traffic nightmare at the Brookdale traffic circle. Optional route pretty much limited to the Seventh Street extension. Closing is needed to carry out overhead bridge deck removal work.

Now that we have that out of the way, reflections on some of the good, bad and ugly along the campaign trail. * It was a tight race but incumbent Maurice Dupelle might have won the unofficial lawn sign battle, easily beating out Brock Frost who reportedly had around 400 signs of all sizes. The Dupelle campaign team papered the city with a reported 620 signs. Just a thought, but it might be neat if the sign-making folks put up a trophy for the lawn sign champion. * Successful incumbent Dave Murphy likes to say that a council re-election campaign starts the day after the election. So, let it be known that Murph’s 2018 mayoral campaign got under way on Oct. 28. His may be the longest mayoral election campaign in city history. * Bob Kilger isn’t the only ex-Royal to serve as an Ontario mayor. Defenceman Ron Smith (1972 Memorial Cup team) was mayor of Cobourg for several years after retiring from the National Hockey League. * Mayor Bob’s election promise of a new park in east Cornwall got zero traction and quickly

disappeared from the campaign radar screen. Just what we don’t need, another empty park. * The crowded councillor ballot of 29 wasn’t a record field. Dick Aubry reminded us that when he first ran for council there were 33 names on the councillor ballot. His was the first name on the ballot. * Several candidates took to the streets in the age-old door-knocking exercise. Ed Lumley tells about his first door-knocking experience when he ran for mayor in 1971. Lum was skeptical about its benefits vs the time it would take, but Norm Baril, one of his campaign handlers, insisted on it. They started in the east end. Eight doors and two hours later Lum threw in the towel and headed back to the campaign office. During that campaign, a member of a rival candidate’s campaign team referred to Lumley’s band of helpers as “Ed’s flunkies”. On election night, after Lumley was declared the upset winner, Baril showed up at city hall (election central) with a button that read “Ed’s Flunkies”. * Can’t ever remember this happening in a local municipal election campaign but one candidate, who described himself as a“good Catholic,”went on Facebook and claimed that a dying priest promised to pray for him to win. The same candidate sent a post-election e-mail to Seaway News editor Todd Lihou that said he (candidate) was praying for the journalist because “Your family has to put up with you.” * Leslie O’Shaughnessy will become the first former United Counties warden to wear Cornwall’s mayoral chain of office. He also served as reeve of Charlottenburgh Township.

Take a bow, CAS Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) hosted its second annual Child and Youth Dinner of the Arts, on Wednesday, wrapping up a month long campaign, to bring awareness and education about child abuse prevention, held throughout October. “It’s our finale, celebrating kids and our youth,” said Kimly Thivierge, public relations for CAS. The event, held at Au Vieux Duluth, which donated all the food for the day, featured children of the community serving up lunch and dinner, and providing the evening’s entertainment. Meals and entertainment were free, donations were gratefully accepted. As well as the child-performers, David Jans dazzled with his magic and guest musicians, Slim and the Fat Kid, aka Marc Muir and Rodney Rivette, played an all-request lunch hour. “They were wonderful; People made a donation to hear their request. You can stump them,” said Thiviege.

The silent auction, with a twist, was also a huge success, she said. “This year we decided to give opportunity to our youth and their parents.” Thirteen different community organizations donated either a sports membership (volley ball, hockey, Tae Kwon Do) or music lessons, dance, or art lessons, for kids who don’t have the opportunity because their parents have other financial responsibilities, she explained. Of course, Pommier Jeweller, as usual, provided the bling for the auction. “It’s a real community effort.” “It’s a really great event. We were at maximum capacity at lunch hour, lineup out the door an hour wait for a table, and the kids were wonderful on the mic.” Among them, Amanda Trakas, 12, of Tagwi, sang Roar, by Katy Perry. “I really like this event because I know it helps people, (involved) in child abuse issues.” Thivierge said that although the month is ending, they are hoping that the effort and initiative doesn’t. “(Child abuse) goes on all

year round; if you see it, hear it, or suspect it, call the agency, so we can protect our most vulnerable kids.” Funds raised help send community children to summer camp. Last year’s event raised $10,000. Next up, for the CAS, is the Christmas Star Campaign where the community is asked to help bring Christmas to kids whose families can’t afford a gift or Christmas meal. “We want to be able to have all kids have a present under the tree on Christmas morning.” To donate or volunteer, contact Kimly Thivièrge at kimly.thivierge@cwcas.ca or call 613-938-5305.

AverAge income tAx rAte 10%, perfect yeAr-round weAther Ecuador: Hottest new retirement destination for Canadians The trend is not new: each year, thousands of Canadians flee the cold and the snow, heading south to sun destinations for weeks or months at a time. But for the most part, only the most adventurous dare to take the next big step and acquire their own property outside of Canada. GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT : KEY FACTORS The Canadian company HolaEcuador understood the challenges faced by Canadian snowbirds and now facilitates the sun property acquisition process. After having visited Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama, company co-owners Yves Cormier and Gordon Poole chose Ecuador as the ideal location. The quality of the country’s infrastructure, incredible biodiversity, low cost of living, beautiful landscapes, accessible and modern healthcare system and year-round mild climate were the decisive factors.

Mr. and Mrs. Oulianov from Gatineau, QC, recently purchased their property in HolaEcuador’s urban development. «The ability to sign a Canadian contract was reassuring for us», indicates Mrs. Oulianov. «Furthermore, the HolaEcuador representatives here in Gatineau answered all our questions and helped us throughout the entire purchase process. The whole experience was very positive!» GOOD TIME TO INVEST For now, Ecuador remains a relatively well-kept secret, but prices are rising quickly with the current real estate boom in the region. The Oulianovs wanted to act quickly and take advantage of the favourable market. «The development itself is spectacular - an endless beautiful beach, lots of parks and gardens, services available right on the site, and a ton of activities available in the region. We’re convinced that this will be a fantastic community in a secure and comfortable environment.»

«Since 2010 we have helped hundreds of Canadians acquire a property on the Pacific coast of Ecuador», says M. Cormier, VP Sales and Marketing. «We are literally creating an entire seaside village. Of the 1,700 properties that

we had available at the start of the project, only 700 remain unsold. And now with the majority of the site infrastructure completed, home construction is ramping up quickly.»

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Military Medal citation: On 24 March 1949, after landing on the dropping zone north of DIERSFORDTER WALD GERMANY, Sergeant Bray came on a platoon of another battalion pinned down by heavy enemy machinegun fire. He assumed command of the platoon and immediately led three of the men in an assault on the machinegun nest. After assaulting and capturing the machinegun, Sergeant Bray proceeded to his own platoon objective. On arriving, he discovered that he was the only member of his platoon to reach there. Knowing full well that it was vital to capture the objective to ensure the carrying out of his Battalion’s plan, he moved straight on with a stun gun as his only weapon. By his outstanting act of courage, he captured the feature and sixteen German Luftwaffe troops. Two other members of his platoon then joined him and dashing forward they captured a further forty-five prisoners. By his outstanding initiative, courage and leadership he ensured that the objective was captured and the lives of many of his platon and company were saved. Medal achieved: Military Medal (For bravery in the field); 1939-45 Star; France & Germany Star; Defence Medal; Canadian voluntary Service Medal with overseas bar. Canadian infantry corps. (1st Canadian Parachute Battalion).

Cornwall family receives ribbon honouring Korean veteran TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall family has received a military honour for a Korean War veteran who spent weeks transporting injured soldiers away from the front lines. The family of Robert Cullen received the Memorial Ribbon, a decoration straight from the Department of National Defence, a couple of weeks ago. Cullen, at age 80, passed away last year. His wife Barbara said her late husband was deserving of such an honour. “Driving that ambulance he saw a lot of horrific things,” she said, adding the war wasn’t something Cullen often spoke of. “For years after he came home he had nightmares. Terrible.” But Cullen was proud of his military background. He was an active member of the Canadian Forces from 1952 to 1961, splitting time between the army and air force. It was on an air force base in Aylmer that he met

his wife to be, who worked as a secretary there at the time. Cullen was originally from Ormstown, Que. just over the provincial border and wanted to return as close to home as he could, and ultimately the couple raised a family in Cornwall. He worked for years in the finance department with the local Parks Canada office. Barbara said her husband, like most Canadian soldiers, wasn’t a man who sought the spotlight. “He’d probably be giving me a hard time for doing this,” she said of applying for the ribbon. “He wasn’t one who liked a lot of attention for something. “I figured he was in the service and was deserving of it.” The Memorial Ribbon was introduced by the Canadian government during Remembrance Week in 2012. It was created as a means to provide a small token of remembrance to some of the close loved ones of veterans, especially children. Barbara and her daughters Linda Grant, Brenda Shaver and Sandra Tryon each received a ribbon.

A man was walking home alone one night when he heard a “BUMP....BUMP.... BUMP...” behind him. Walking faster, he looked back, making out an image of an upright coffin banging its way down the middle of the street towards him....”BUMP... BUMP...BUMP...” The man began to run toward his home, and the coffin bounced after him faster.... faster...BUMPBUMPBUMP. He ran up to his door, fumbled with his keys, opened the door, rushed in, and locked it behind him. The coffin crashed through his door, with the lid of the coffin clapping BUMP...BUMP...BUMP... on the heals of the terrified man. The man rushed upstairs to the bathroom and locked himself in, heart pounding. With a CRASH, the coffin broke down the door, coming slowly toward him. The man while screaming, reached for something, anything....all he can find was a box of cough drops which he hurled at the coffin...and suddenly “the coffin stops.”
