Greg Kielec is looking for all the votes he can get going into the municipal election – but one he didn’t count on is from his 15-year-old daughter. Still, Kielec's daughter Marie-Soleil received her very own voter card in the mail, along with her parents. "She won't be voting, but she got a card," said Kielec, who found the anomalous card when he sifted through the voter information sent to him in the mail by city hall.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Photog phenom Jason McNamara is putting down roots. The acclaimed photographer, who contributes mightily to the popular Cornwal Living magazine, is setting up a studio in a heritage building in Downtown Cornwall in space above Pure Esthetics at 137 Pitt Street. “Having a studio will allow me to take my business to the next level,” says McNamara. “Downtown Cornwall has an exciting vibe to it, and I look forward to adding to it.” The 800 sq.ft. of studio space will allow McNamara to under take more commercial and portrait photography. The self-taught photographer has been amassing lighting equipment for some time now and creating a home base will allow him to be more efficient and increase his output. “Getting the right image is all about the combination of subject, setting and light,” says McNamara. “A studio gives the photographer more control over each element.” The studio will also be a place for McNamara to edit his photographs, and increasingly, his video projects. “Editing video can be a time-consuming process,” says McNamara. “The other nice thing about being downtown is that I will be surrounded by some excellent restaurants which will come in handy when I need to take a break.” Mr. McNamara is known for creating

Kilger has six-point plan for city’s future TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mayor Bob Kilger officially kicked off his campaign for re-election in Cornwall Monday, issuing a six-point plan he wants voters to buy into before next month’s election. Among a list of other proposals, Kilger said it’s time for Cornwall to introduce development charges that will be paid for any new construction in the city. Cornwall is one of few municipalities in the province that doesn’t issue development charges, and Kilger wants city council to closely examine the idea. “The time has come for council to have a full debate around the issue of development charges,” he said. “It’s only to be considered when new residents and new housing, and if a new commercial enterprise...so that as our community grows a

certain amount from those buildings would go into a reserve.” The money in that reserve could then offset the costs associated with introducing traffic lights, sewer lines and other infrastructure for a particular development. Kilger also called for the creation of a new home for the arts and culture sector in Cornwall. For several months there has been talk in and around the city about creating an arts centre in Cornwall, and Kilger suggests now is the time to move forward on that file. “The time has come for the City of Cornwall to give itself and its residents a home for the arts. It’s long overdue, some would say,” he said. “I hope my colleagues will see this in the same (way).” Kilger further suggested that if elected he would urge city council to adopt a code of conduct, similar to other boards, both public and from the private sector, that mandate such a practice. “It’s a principle that is widespread,” he said.

“You do not take a seat at the table without signing that code of conduct. “What that does…is it establishes the code as it pertains to the culture and the ethics of the group.” Kilger also made promises to toe the line on taxes, suggesting he wants to ensure tax rates in Cornwall keep pace with inflation over the course of the four-year term looming for the new city council. His plan also includes what he jokingly referred to as “Bob Kilger’s pet project” which would see some kind of park or recreation area created in the city’s east end, perhaps in the area of Montreal Road, First Street East, St. Felix Avenue and McConnell Avenue. “Before any talks about a splash pad anywhere, know that Mayor Kilger will want a park in that area of the city for those children and those families,” he said. “There isn’t even a sandbox in that entire area of our town. I find that shameful. That

Mayor Bob Kilger at his re-election campaign launch Monday in Cornwall. needs to change.” Kilger also said greater efficiencies need to be found with how the city operates, including finding ways to further consolidate services and employees housed throughout Cornwall and move them to the civic complex where departments like financial services and planning are currently found.

Kids’ Expo connects families to community CORNWALL, Ontario - Event organizer Ginny Pereira wanted to help families see that Cornwall has more to offer its youth and teens – and she did just that at the Kids’ Expo’s inaugural year. A variety of local youth programs, sports and fitness groups, businesses, clubs, and various resources filled the salons of the civic complex on Saturday, September 27. With 40 booths to choose from, over 600 attendees took full advantage of the free event. “I think the numbers really show that Cornwall

parents need more children and family-friendly events,” said Pereira, owner/operator of Cornwall’s Creation Workshop. Wasting no time, she’s already planning round two, and is looking for feedback from parents to know what elements can be added to the expo. “I would like to see more of a focus on the food side next year, like nutritional information for children,” she said. Meanwhile, the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of SDG purple ribbon campaign launch ran simultaneously in Lamoureux Park. “We are grateful for the partnership, and we’d like to work even closer with them for next year,” Pereira added. The two events running side by side made visiting the expo an easy decision for Jason Taillon and and his two sons Caleb, 7, and Matthew, 5. The trio explored some aquatic insects and fish from the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Science booth before they dashed over to the next exhibitor. “We enjoyed ourselves outside and then we came in here to cool off and get educated on all the services in the area,” said Taillon. “I hope they combine the expo and launch again next year.” The contrast of the exhibitors covered municipal services like police and transit, volunteering with St. John Ambulance and the 17th Cornwall Girl Guides, fitness with SDG Taekwondo, arts with Fantasy Realm, and service opportunities with the army, air, and sea cadets. And the list goes on. “The vendors had a chance to meet each other and share information about their own

businesses,” said Pereira. “And the young families are getting information about different services the city offers, as well as other vendors in the area.” The Raging Robots, a FIRST Lego League (FLL) robotics team in Cornwall for youth and teens, displayed a large customized table covered with mini feats of technology as they prepare for the FLL regional qualifying tournaments in Kanata this November. “They have no funding and this is their only true opportunity to come and let the city know that they’re here,” said Periera. Sandra Knight and Carolyn Cormier’s booth stood apart from the others. They were fundraising with authentic African crafts and coffee to help pay for an international student’s $12,000 annual school fees. Last year, Knight took in Betelhem “Beti” Girma. The Grade 12 Holy Trinity pupil has since become family. Cormier, a best friend of Knight and a monthly sponsor of Girma, even considers her her niece. “To find someone who is going to help me and a community, it’s really nice,” said Girma. Knight met the bright-eyed teen in Ethiopia about six years ago. “The circumstances were rough so we just gave support over the years when we could,” said Knight. “She is of the age now where adoption would not be possible because she is 18, but we can at least get her an education.” The end goal for Girma is to attend university in Canada to become a doctor and claim her independence, to either stay here or go back to

son running through the nearby parking lot. Tyler White, 49 of Akwesasne was arrested Saturday and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80. It is alleged that an impaired man was found to be operating a vehicle that plowed into Ye Old Fish and Chips on First Street East. White was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to attend court on Oct. 20. Henstock took over the restaurant where he lives from his parents eight years ago after they owned and operated it for a decade. “This is my future, all my money is invested in this building,” he said. “What happens next is uncertain until a construction engineer comes in to tell me if it’s a write-off or not. It’s an old building.

Hopefully, I can fix it and be back in business.” Patrons of the family-operated restaurant flocked to the shop Saturday to see the damage for themselves and to ask to Henstock how he was doing. “By morning over 100 people came to the restaurant. Whether they eat at the Fish ‘N Chip or not, they wanted to see,” he said. “It’s nice when the community stands behind you.” Boyer and Henstock both believe the crash was linked to drinking and driving. Henstock said he was glad nobody was hurt and is keeping positive about the ordeal. “I was pretty shocked, but life goes on. How many people can say they had a car run through their building?” he asked.

THREATS Robert Couch, 43 of Cornwall was arrested on September 26th, 2014 and charged with threats. It is alleged that on September 26th, 2014 the man attended the Social Services Department on Pitt Street and threatened to shoot everyone at a bank and at social services. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On September 26th, 2014 police located the man at a Marlborough Street address and took him into custody. He was charged accordingly and released to appear in court on October 28th, 2014. ASSAULT, ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON, BREACH A 21-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on September 27th, 2014 and charged with two counts of assault, assault with a weapon, breach of probation for failing to keep the peace and breach of recognizance for being with someone she has conditions not to associate with. It is alleged that on September 26th, 2014 during an argument at a Marlborough Street convenience store the woman punched an 18-year-old man known to her then punched her 18-year-old sister in the head with brass knuckles. Police were called and an investigation ensued. During their investigation the woman was located at a Pitt Street address, taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. Her name was not released as it would identify the victims in the matter.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The owner of the Ye Old English Fish ‘N’ Chip Shop in downtown Cornwall is not sure if his family’s legacy will continue to feed the city. A vehicle plowed through the eatery, which is located at 9 First Street East between Pitt and Sydney streets, early Saturday morning at approximately 2:45 a.m. Michael Henstock, the shop’s owner, raced downstairs only to find his establishment in ruins and the black SUV-type vehicle that caused the damage attempting to make a getaway down the street. “I heard a loud crash and there it was,” said Henstock. Joseph Boyer, a DJ for Vu Nightspot, heard the incident from outside the club just a few hundred meters away. “I went around the corner after seeing smoke rise up from the building. I thought it was an explosion at first. After turning the alley corner the vehicle proceeded to back out and drive directly towards a group of us. It then spun out on its rims and couldn’t go any further,” said Boyer. He didn’t see the driver or if there were any passengers inside the vehicle. Henstock recalled seeing the vehicle come to a complete stop just before the stop sign at the end of the street. Then, he witnessed an unknown per-

Making noise about child abuse Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Pop goes the silence. With mashed brown paper bags in hand, the crowd at Lamoureux Park demonstrated how simply and quickly the secrets that surround child abuse can be exposed. The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of SDG launched its annual campaign with a wave of purple ribbons and T-shirts on Saturday, Sept. 27. Over 2,700 people flocked to the park for free family activities such as inflatables, Zumba, a BCDC dance show, carnival rides, games, a dunk tank, and face painting. For the Hurlberts, the event is a family tradition. Kevin, his wife Sheena, and their three daughters Kaylie 12, Sydney, 6, and Corey, 4, attend for many reasons, but most importantly the bag pop.

“We do this as a family every year to support kids,” said Kevin. In a resonating public display of solidarity, over 800 people broke the silence and attendance records as they held their bags high and popped in unison. The symbolism was powerful to behold. “The message is that if there’s any child out there who is in trouble, being harmed, abused or neglected, we need to step up for those children who are vulnerable. We have to be their voice,”said Organizer Kimly Thivierge, CAS public relations manager. CAS has more than 50 different sponsors supporting their October Child Abuse Prevention campaign. At the launch event alone there was a slew of complimentary samplings: BBQ supplied by Benson Auto Parts, slices from Boston Pizza, curds from St. Albert Cheese Co-op, coffee and hot chocolate from Tim Hortons, smoothies from Mocktails,

Cornwall refused to stay quiet about child abuse on Saturday, Sept. 24. Adam Brazeau mini-donuts, family photos, and the list goes on. A constant theme with nearly all the attendees was the ‘Break the Silence - Use your Voice’ CAS slogan T-shirt. The $10 garment is the perfect fit for October 17, when over 60 schools and more than 120 area businesses will dress purple for the cause.

For more information, visit www.cassdg.ca. So we broke the record with 801 people who participated in the bag pop event breaking the silence on abuse. We also had apron 26 -2800 people come attend the park during the 4 hour period.

SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON: New farm in the city CORNWALL, Ontario - There’s something fishy brewing in west-end Cornwall. The city’s planning advisory committee has green-lighted a plan to see an industrial-sized fish farm built at the corner of Second Street West and Saunders Drive. The farm will literally be home to millions of fish, all about the size of an inch, that will be

raised and sold into the wholesale and veterinarian market. The farm will be located in what is currently a warehouse, that is surrounded by other commercial operations. The PAC committee learned the fish farm will remain several hundred metres away from residential properties. The farm is not expected to impact the local environment or neighbouring eco systems. “The type of aquaculture to be practiced on

the subject site would be the breeding of ornamental fish for sale,” reads a city report authored by senior planner Mary-Joyce Smith. “This type of aquaculture is of very low risk to surrounding ecosystems because the facilities are able to operate separate from the natural environment.” Secure holding tanks are expected to house the fish indoors. “Indoor aquaculture breeding facilities such as the (one) proposed, require significantly less water in order to operate when compared to outdoor or open tank operations, and likely would not introduce any stress on 5776863

In an interview Smith said the owners of the new fish farm want to start work as quickly as possible. She added species like guppies and angel fish will be included to begin operations. City council is expected to review the plan next month. The company is anticipating millions of dollars in sales to start, and could employ a few dozen people once operations fully ramp up.

Mental wellness forum focuses on healing Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - If there was ever a person who could be excused for carrying a wealth of hate with her for the rest of her life it is Noella Bouvier. The Cornwall woman suffered through the worst tragedy a parent can endure, following an October 1999 stabbing attack that targeted her daughter Julie. Julie ultimately survived the tragedy, and the incident has been immortalized in a controversial, but popular, documentary that highlights the fragility of mental illness patients, Not Criminally Responsible. In an interview with Seaway News Noella said she was able to forgive her daughter’s attacker, Sean Clifton, through her strong faith in God, and the “New Beginning” course offered by One Voice Outreach in Cornwall. “Once I understood the mental illness... then I came to realize it is a terrible sickness,” she said. Local amateur club looking for new members

CORNWALL, Ontario - Ed Halliwell can still remember, with vivid detail, how crowded the airwaves got when an amateur radio operator from New Zealand was heard bouncing his signals across the sky. Halliwell was at an outdoor Seaway Valley Amateur Radio Club event and his radio set was barely putting out any juice, but he could still hear the voice of a man on the other side of the planet. And so could nearly everyone else in North America with a HAM radio set of their own. “Everyone in North America was trying to talk to this guy,” Halliwell joked. “We just didn’t have enough power for him to hear us. But we could hear him.” The world of amateur radio is full of stories like that. Halliwell and the dozens of others who are members of the Seaway Valley Amateur Radio Club are looking to broaden their reach by adding other likeminded individuals to their ranks. The club is hosting some information/ education sessions beginning in November and into the new year. “The club has been around for a long time. Fifty years,” he said. For more information, please call (evenings) or email; Halliwell, 613-933-0132 (ed. halliwell@xplornet.com) or Joe Scott, 613932-2252 (ve3adb@hotmail.com).

One photo shoot down, and plenty more to come for Madison Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Thirteen-year-old Madison Pawis has a pretty extensive resume. It’s got all the normal stuff for a young girl... school work, hockey, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics. Oh yah, professional model, too. Cornwall’s Pawis recently received the first issue of 1608, a French-language Quebec-based fashion magazine that contains her very first photo shoot. And if the early returns are any indication, there are more just around the corner.

Pawis will be heading to New York City later this year for another photo session with some high-profile American photographers and fashionistas. But seeing her images in print for the first time is still resonating. “It was kind of like, ‘Why would I be in a magazine?’ A lot of people will see it,” she said. The summertime photo shoot was wall-towall make-up artists and fashion experts. “There were a lot of clothes that I would never wear,” she said. “It was mainly for older people.” When one sees her photos it’s hard to believe

the model wearing the clothes is still in junior high school at Holy Trinity in South Glengarry and a few years away from getting her driver’s license. Pawis got her start in modelling thanks to social media and her mother Leeann. Leeann had posted a photo of her daughter on Facebook, and one of mom’s friends – who happens to be acquainted with a fashion agent in Montreal – saw the photo and inquired about some more photographs. Pawis said she’s looking forward to more fashion layouts in the future. “I really like taking pictures,” she said.

DEVIL’S SEED:

Teens hospitalized after ingesting poisonous plant

5812488

CORNWALL, Ontario - Public health officials and police in eastern Ontario are warning the public about a deadly plant that has sent several teens to the emergency room in the past few weeks. And unlike other deadly toxins people take to get high this one grows wildly and locally. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) issued a community safety alert on Sept. 29 after a Russell County teen was hospitalized for ingesting Datura stramonium, also known as ‘Jimsonweed or Devil’s Seed,’ earlier in the month at a school. OPP say the teen was spotted at a campus after school hours by faculty acting strangely and not feeling well. As police investigated the

case, he was taken to the hospital. On Sept. 26, provincial police confirmed the accused was intoxicated by the notorious plant. He has been charged with administering a noxious thing with intent - endanger life or cause bodily harm. The teen is scheduled to appear in L’Orignal Youth Court on October 29. “Young people are not aware of the serious risk they’re taking,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, medical officer of health of the EOHU. “Some of them may think of jimsonweed as a substitute for other drugs. Unfortunately, this could cost them their lives.” According to the EOHU, all parts of the plant are poisonous and contain a powerful hypnotic sedative as well as a high level of nitrate. Symptoms usually occur within 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion and may continue for 24 to 48 hours or even longer. Jimsonweed is described as odorous with pointed green leaves sprouts trumpet-shaped white or purple flowers, as well as a prickly pod filled with dozens of seeds. Common effects include high fever, racing heart rate, blurry vision, hallucinations and Jimsonweed Kyle Walto delusions. More severely, the plant can also any further victims. cause seizures and comas. In 2007, over a dozen teens in the Cornwall Roumeliotis urges parents and caregivers area were hospitalizes after ingesting the halto speak with their children regarding the danlucinogenic plant. gers posed by jimsonweed in order to prevent Search for Jimsonweed on www.omafra.

Reductions of fuel consumption up to 147% are possible! DANCES WITH WORDS Nick Wolochatiuk nuthilltoo@gmail.com

If you were born before sliced bread was available at the corner store and when hands and arms were turn indicators for cars, you can remember when gasoline cost about $0.40 per imperial gallon. If you’re one of those who have callouses on your thumbs from texting and can’t hear me because access to your brain is blocked by the ear buds that are constantly in your ears, here’s some useful mathematical trivia for you: one Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 liters; one liter = 0.21996916 Imperial gallons. I’ll let you do the math to find out

how much of a bargain those days of yore fuel prices were. I’ve carefully perused the sage advice of driving experts such as Tim Houle and Thomas Jay McCahill III (known as ‘Tom McCahill’ in his 1950s-1970s car critiques in Mechanix Illustrated). As a public service to you, I’ll summarize and present the many ways you can reduce your car’s fuel consumption. If it’s a gas guzzler, don’t jump the gun by having a mechanic look under the hood. First, take a look at the guy (or gal) who’s behind the wheel. Modifying your driving habits can result in great reductions in fuel consumption. Savings up to 23% if jack rabbit starts are avoided and 18% if panic stops are avoided. Some drivers seem to be trying to replicate the catapult

take-offs and arrestor cable screeching stops of carrier-based fighter aircraft. Is there really a pressing need for hurtling along at 100 kph on side streets and in Walmart’s parking lots? Save up to 23% if you moderate your speeds. Additional savings of up to 17% can be achieved if you avoid rush hour and the Tim Horton drive-thru between the hours of 1201 AM and 1159 PM. An idling engine gets you nowhere. If you don’t start your engine until your passengers are belted in, a saving of up to 15% can be achieved by avoiding idling. Winter’s coming: save 12% by wearing a toque and long johns instead of resorting to an excessive warm-up period. At highway speeds there’s a 16% increase in

drag because of open windows. Wear a bikini and just sweat it out if you don’t have air conditioning. One more thing: in December, take those golf bags out of the trunk; in May, take the goalie hockey equipment out and the ski-rack box off. Excess weight costs 12%, excess drag costs 11%. Unfortunately, you can’t refuse to have your obese friends as passengers. Did you just ask, “What’s your personal secret to fuel savings?” My pickup truck always has a 16-foot canoe mounted on top. A canoe is as streamlined as a Concorde SST or a 15-year old girl on a vegan diet. It works just like the enormous spoilers at the rear of Indianapolis racing cars and pimped 1984 Honda Civics.

2014 NISSAN TITAN FINANCING

opinion

Talking culture in Cornwall truly is an art form Todd Lihou

playbook. There’s no doubt that an arts centre would be a wonderful feather in our cap as a city. But who pays for it? Where does it go? Who operates it? And how much will that cost? All are questions that continue to swirl with no concrete answers. But if artists can mimic the grassroots campaign that led to the construction of the Benson Centre then the creation of an arts centre becomes more of a reality. On the question of who pays for the initial development of an arts centre, I think it’s obvious that artists have to come to the table with more than a desire for the facility. We’ve heard you – and most of us agree. Now it’s time for artists to dig in and start raising money to that end. It’s becoming clear among many that Aultsville Theatre/Hall would be a great home for an arts centre. I’m no artist (obviously) but I can’t think of a better place, with amenities already available like the waterfront and St. Lawrence College, which would create an atmosphere of creativity and inclusion. The last two questions are sticky ones, which lead to even more queries. Is the city in the arts business? Will already overburdened taxpayers sanction more expenditures on the people and infrastructure needed to operate an arts centre? I’m not so sure. Candidate Mike O’Neil, one of few who did their homework ahead of Monday’s forum at the Cornwall Public Library, suggested in places like North Bay ($315,000), Brockville ($155,000) and Aurora ($400,000) the cost of operating an arts centre could hardly be considered cheap. First-rate facilities often come with hefty price

todd.lihou@tc.tc

Two ‘debates’ down, and frustratingly we’ve spent a lot of time focusing on arts and culture in this municipal election campaign. At the risk of getting pelted with a paint brush, or smacked with a guitar, it’s time to change the record. I have to admit, I am biased. I can’t dance, sing, or draw a picture to save my life…it’s never been my strong suit. Writing even presents problems, as evidenced by this rant, many will agree. My favourite part of the two high-profile debates concerning the subject of arts and culture to date has come when every candidate has risen to say how much they support that facet of our community. What else did you expect to from a collection of people addressing a room full of artists? But what many candidates have suggested and I agree with, is that it’s time for artists to take it up a notch. Years ago when hockey people finally became fed up with the quality and quantity of the rink facilities in Cornwall they banded together and convinced city hall to invest money in a new facility. Today we have the Benson Centre. A grassroots fundraising program raised millions to help offset the cost of that project. I forget how many said it at the arts debate Monday night, but it was pointed out that after MILLIONS had been raised in the community, city hall had little choice but to move ahead with the Benson Centre construction. Artists need to take a page out of the hockey

tags. O’Neil impressed because he is a candidate in the early going who actually knows a thing or two about what he’s talking about, because he’s taken the time to examine an issue. In a little talk later he pointed out that Cornwall currently spends nearly $200,000 on arts and culture, buts it’s split up between the local art gallery ($55,000), Aultsville Hall ($97,000), Centre Charles Emile Claude ($30,000) and the Centre Culturel ($16,000). So, there is some municipal money for operating costs already on the table – the idea now has to be getting all these groups under one roof. Perhaps hosting exhibitions, concerts and shows at an arts centre would be enough to offset some/most of the operating costs of such a facility. Maybe taxpayers will be asked to subsidize the balance. We already do, to a certain degree.

Until we know the answers to these questions, the future of an arts centre in Cornwall can’t be carved in stone (see what I did there? A reference to sculpting…maybe I am an artist at heart). We’ve heard from artists, and we’ve also received an earful from candidates on this subject. Many will agree it is time for action – but I would argue the action can’t come from the politicians. Mayoral candidate Leslie O’Shaughnessy rightly suggested Monday night that a solution to the arts centre question cannot come from elected officials, or it is doomed to fail. Instead, artists are the ones that must now take up the challenge of seeing a centre created that will more effectively convey their work to the community. Get back to me when you’ve got all that sorted out.

The charismatic Scottish leader Alex Salmond claimed his countrymen were “tricked” into rejecting independence in the referendum. He claimed politicians in London promised to hand more power to Scots and this played a crucial role in swinging the votes in favor of union. This makes some sense. Prior to London politicians getting heavily involved, it looked liked the yes side could succeed. Just days before the vote, Cameron and his political rivals joined forces in a vow to quickly pass laws to transfer key decision making powers from London to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. Although the Parti Quebecois, under Pauline Marois, was defeated in Quebec, the talk of separatism has temporarily been put on hold. It will resurface again despite the fact that the younger generation are fed up of referendums and have no interest in separating from the rest of Canada. Quebec has already had two referendums on sovereignty. Scotland will also have another one in the future. Politicians made promises to keep Quebec together. The same thing happened in Scotland. Unless some of the promises are honored, the dream of separation will live on.

independent Scotland is not dead. This dream to be independent will always live on. After a decade or so, if not earlier, the talk of another referendum will once again raise its ugly head. Scotland’s situation is similar to what is happening in our own country. We all thought no one was ever going to talk about separating Quebec from the rest of Canada. Only months after the Liberals trounced Parti Quebecois, the separatists in this province are working on a new strategy. In the next five years or so, we will see the separatists in Quebec talking about another referendum. Several weeks ago, I wrote an opinion column in this newspaper and predicted the vote was going to be very close with the no side winning. I guess the no side won because the rest of the United Kingdom suddenly woke up from a deep slumber and realized they had to do more if they wanted the country to remain united. The British Prime Minister David Cameron, Her Majesty the Queen and a couple of former prime minister and several world leaders got involved in the campaign urging Scots to remain united. This did the trick.

Clearing the air on Agape finances Dear editor: When we think of the Agapè Centre, we immediately connect it to our food bank and so when people see the financial statements of the Centre, they are perplexed as to why the Centre has large operational costs including the wages. What people do not see in the financial operations is that the Thrift store is also part of the Agapè Centre and it cannot be separated out as our store would have to charge HST on its’ items like for-profit “thrift” stores. Our Thrift store brings in over 55% of the total revenue and helps pay for many building expenses that the food bank and soup kitchen benefit from. For example, we incur very large utility

bills due to all the fridges and freezers including our walk-ins, to fulfill the needs of the clients of the food bank and soup kitchen. Our Thrift Store, in addition donates “off book” substantial clothing allowance to those in need. $225,000 of the total wage costs of the Agapè Centre is attributable directly to wages for the thrift store. Moreover, the thrift store employs 6-8 full time staff as well as additional part time staff that are earning a living which contributes to the economy of Cornwall. Here are some other interesting facts about the wage costs of the Agapè Centre: 1. Even though the soup kitchen serves approximately 120 people in need every day, there is only one head cook at 35 hours per

week. Additionally we employ a dishwasher at 25 hours per week and there is also a receptionist to cover the needs of the soup kitchen clients. The rest is all done by volunteers. 2. Even though the food bank serves over 1000 families per month, there is only one paid client services manager and receptionist to book appointments. 3. There is one volunteer coordinator who works with over 150 volunteers per month. 4. There is one operations manager who oversees the functioning of the 3 separate entities (food bank, soup kitchen and thrift store). 5. There is one executive director who is responsible for planning events that provide more funding to the Centre, write grants for

additional projects that have positive impact in the community (such as the feeding families fund) as well as donor and public relations, communications, etc... 6. There is nobody, nor has there ever been anyone on the Sunshine List with a salary above $100,000. If you still think the wage costs are too high, please visit the centre for a personal tour and we will walk you through our books and the operation of our organization. Only then can you make an informed opinion about the wages of the Agapè Centre. Jim Healey Chair of the Board of Directors, Agape Centre

EI Premium rebate is political marketing EI premiums to small businesses does not create jobs. A business creates a job when their is growth in production and when customers want their products. A small business does not give a moment of consideration to the cost of EI premiums. Secondly, the business will merely pocket the savings in EI premiums. It is a nice

reduction in the cost of employment, a small bonus to the business owner, but it does not entice the owner to hire another person. Thirdly, it is a political trick. The government should simply reduce EI premiums across the board. Instead, Harper targets small businesses exclusively and arranges a

periodic rebate to remind the business owner that she is receiving a gift from the government with her own tax money. It is all an expensive vote buying scheme, heavy in administrative cost, and completely irrelevant. Tom Manley Berwick ON

Dear editor: The old saying is “any free advertising is good advertising”. The Harper Conservatives exploit that by getting air time over a useless rebate in EI premiums. In fact, they get double messaging by falsely claiming job creation benefits. For one, a rebate of pennies in

RELIGION & OBITUARIES

Your walk with Jesus PASTOR'S PERSPECTIVE Jesus of Nazareth did walk this earth almost two thousand years ago. The Bible tells us that Jesus has returned to heaven and that one day He will come back again. Theologians have called this future, glorious event on God’s prophetic timeline, “The Second Coming of Christ”. However, so many people now consider Jesus to be completely absent from this world. But nothing could be further from the truth. By the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus has sent to those who repent and trust in Him, human beings can still walk with Jesus Christ in this crazy, confusing world. He wants to walk with us and, furthermore, He wants us to walk

with Him in a close, intimate, spiritual, transforming fellowship. Basically, Christians can walk with Christ in one of three different ways. Option # 1 – We can choose to walk far in front of Him and think we can do it all on our own or simply consult Him only in our desperate moments. Option # 2 – We can choose to walk far behind Him, allowing a great distance to come between us, and thus forfeit some pretty special blessings on route. Option # 3 – We can choose to walk right beside Him – close enough so that we can listen to Him, learn from Him, and lean on Him. The third option is, of course, what the Bible heartily recommends for every true follower of Jesus. So please don’t walk ahead of Him or walk behind Him but walk with Him … the greatest Friend of all!

Tips for selling your cottage

The cottage has always been your little slice of heaven. But, due to your age and stage, the costs associated with cottage ownership— or whatever the reason—you’ve decided to sell. Here are some tips on how to sell your cottage and achieve the best outcome—for both you and for your family. First decide whether to keep it in the family “Any cottage owner will tell you that a cottage is more than just a house by the lake,” says Sam Lieberman, CPA, CA of North York. “There is a sort of magic that happens when a family comes together up at the cottage. As a result, cottage owners will often want to ensure the cottage is kept in the family.” Unfortunately, adds Lieberman, the sale or gift of a cottage to children or other family members all too often leads to unplanned financial and personal results. “Before deciding to sell or gift the cottage to your children, reflect on what owning the cottage could mean to them,” advises Lieberman. “Ask yourself whether they have shown any interest in owning the cottage, and whether there may be conflict among your children about sharing and maintaining it.” You should also consider

behave ethically and who knows your market.” You can research realtors online, but exercise caution when doing so. “Often the agents listed on websites have paid to be listed there, so it’s no assurance of quality,” explains Lieberman. “A better bet is to Google the top real estate companies in your area and look up the profiles of individual agents at offices near you.” Make sure you have the documents you need for the sale. “You need a copy of your deed or other proof of ownership and, ideally, a survey that describes the property,” says Brown. Determine the tax implications “When you sell your cottage, and the value of the property has appreciated, then tax will become payable at that time on the difference between the proceeds of the sale and the total of its adjusted cost base,” says Lieberman. “This is generally a capital gain for income tax purposes, and taxes will be assessed at up to approximately 25 per cent in Ontario on the gain.” It is important to have records of the cost of your cottage and major renovations, in order to minimize the capital gain. “You need receipts for any major renovations, such as the cost of building an addition, dock or boathouse, replacing the roof or work on your well or septic system,” says Brown. “These receipts will help determine the adjusted cost base of your cottage—which is the sum of the original cost of the property and the cost of major renovations.”

If you sell to your children, the capital gain will be based on the fair market value of the property, regardless of the actual sale price, because the sale is considered to be between “non-arm’s length parties.” “If you sell to your children at less than the fair market value, not only will you pay tax as though you received fair market value, your children will have an adjusted cost base equal to the amount they paid, possibly leading to double taxation,” cautions Lieberman. “If you do sell to your children, consider spreading out the gain on the sale over five years. You may be able to use the capital gains reserve and pay taxes on the capital gains over time, instead of all in one year.” You may be able to shelter the capital gain on the sale of your cottage by using the principal residence exemption. “A cottage can be designated as a principal residence, even if you don’t use it as your primary residence, as long as it is ‘ordinarily inhabited’ at some point during the year,” says Lieberman. Before you sell your cottage, talk to a Chartered Professional Accountant about the tax implications. “If you have more than one residence, you need to decide whether to exercise the principal residence exemption,” says Brown. “Depending on where it is located, your cottage may have appreciated more than your house. It’s best to seek advice on all the tax implications involved.”

whether your children have the resources to maintain the cottage, and how you will treat your children fairly if some want the cottage and others do not. If you do decide to transfer the cottage to your children, think about the financial implications. “Even if you gift the cottage to your children, it is still treated as a sale at fair market value for tax purposes,” explains Sharon Brown, CPA, CA of BDO Canada LLP in Guelph. “You may therefore want to defer the transfer of the cottage to your children until after your death, and make the tax liability part of your estate planning.” Spruce it up As is the case with any piece of real estate, the better the cottage shows, the higher price it will fetch. “Do obvious repairs inside, including repainting,” advises Brown. “A cottage sale can be different from a house sale, in that cottages are often sold with their contents, including furniture and dishes. If this is the case, go through the contents and discard what should be thrown away. Too much junk in a cottage puts people off.” In addition to de-cluttering and tidying, Lieberman suggests replacing cracked floor or counter tiles, patching any holes in the walls, fixing leaky faucets, and repairing doors and drawers that don’t close properly. “Outside, ensure the trees are trimmed so the view of the water is unobstructed,” he suggests. “Re-stain wooden decks and docks, clear pathways and walkways and replace loose flagstones.” Hire a realtor and assemble your documents “Use a realtor who specializes in listing cottages in your area,” says Brown. “A local realtor will have a better idea of the current market and how to best present your cottage.” Ask your neighbours which realtor they would use and look for realtors reputed to go “above and beyond” to satisfy their customers. “The saying ‘20 per cent of the agents do 80 per cent of the business’ is true,” says Lieberman. “The best agent for you doesn’t necessarily work at the largest brokerage, close the most deals or make the most money. The best agent for you is an experienced professional who will listen to you,

YOUR HOROSCOPE for the week of October 3-October 9, 2014

Cornwall’s Hottest Music

ARIES

Aries, though you are usually up for a conversation with someone you don’t know, this week you could be in a more conservative mood. You’ll have future chances to chat.

TAURUS

You have been on a shopping binge of late, Taurus. If you have unlimited funds, this would not be so problematic. But finances are tight, and you should be more cautious.

GEMINI

Gemini, you are often an entertaining and fun person to have around. This is probably why you get so many invitations to parties and other social occasions. Enjoy your fanfare.

CANCER

Surround yourself with children this week, Cancer. They’ll provide the unedited, honest information you desire right now. It can certainly be eye-opening.

LEO

Spend some quality time with a romantic partner this week, Leo. He or she can provide more of what you need, such as true affection and companionship, than what’s offered by friends.

VIRGO

Virgo, you deserve credit at the office. If you’re patient, some measure of recognition will come your way this week. It’s a start to getting what you need.

Few people will accuse you of being uncommunicative, Libra. In fact, you’re usually downright chatty. It’s one of the traits people will admire most in you this week.

SCORPIO

Scorpio, a new person comes into your life and your attraction to this person catches you off guard. It’s okay to flirt, but if you’re already attached to someone, leave it at that.

SAGITTARIUS

Capricorn, once you have gained enough confidence in a special interest, you may be able to turn it into a career instead of just a hobby. Keep working toward that goal.

HOW TO PLAY :

AQUARIUS

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once.

PISCES

Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column, or 3x3 box.

It’s time to tie up some loose ends, Aquarius. Rustle up some energy to take care of all those little things that need to be wrapped up. You’ll feel a weight lift afterward. Pisces, increase your level of activity this week. Exercise can do you a world of good, especially if you’ve felt sluggish of late.

Lalonde’s tallies came at 4:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cornwall and 6:28 into the third to make the score 3-1 Cornwall. Cornwall was led by goalie Denny Dubblestyne, who finished with 42 saves while allowing one goal. Dubblestyne managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 1.58 prior to the game. The Colts pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 16 penalty minutes. The lawsuit says Pokulok played under an NHL contract for three years and suffered multiple head traumas during his career, including in training camps, NHL rookie games, and prospect and main camps. “Mr. Pokulok was never warned by the NHL of the negative health effects of head trauma,” reads the lawsuit. The lawsuit also includes a quote from former Cornwall Royal Owen Nolan, who said the new NHL glass is “a lot harder. It’s like hitting concrete.” Simon Danis-Pepin, a 2006 second-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, also attached his name to the lawsuit. The NHL has faced six lawsuits concerning brain injuries. Pokulok’s lawsuit was filed in a Minnesota court.

Gold in Oshawa

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall River King is going after the NHL in a lawsuit that alleges as many as 30 per cent of retired players have, or will develop, brain damage from head injuries and concussions. Sasha Pokulok has filed a statement of claim, according to a report by TSN. It’s unclear what Pokuluk is seeking by way of damages. Pokulok is entering his third season with the River Kings. He was drafted 14th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2005, but has never played a game in the NHL. He did, however, sign a contract with the Capitals and spent his time playing in minor leagues like the AHL and ECHL before beginning a playing career in Europe. Pokulok returned to North America and began playing with the River Kings in 2012.

ence of the wind and dampness. Watching another player’s ball, especially if he or she has a similar shot, provides hints on how the ball rolls. Sometimes, it even provides you with a near perfect line. Also, miss a break on the high side of the hole not the low. That way the ball has at least a chance of rolling in. And it doesn’t roll as far away from the hole on the high side as it does on the low. In addition, a strong wind affects the speed and direction of the ball as does dampness. So factor these elements in. A ball rolls a lot slower on wet grass than on dry grass. Finally, watch the ball if it goes by the whole. Don’t turn away in anger. There’s little feedback before and during a putt, so you can’t check your reading accuracy until after you hit the ball. Key questions you need to ask yourself are: Did it have the right direction? Did it have the right speed? Did it have the right on line? Answering these questions is crucial to improving your ability to read greens and sink more putts. And doing that, as my golf lessons point out, will lower your golf handicap.

5777567

you walk to the green. The best view of the green’s slope (whether it slopes to the right or left) is from 20 yards or so away. Standing on the green can’t tell you this. If the terrain surrounding the green slopes to the right, the green probably slopes to the right. If a green slopes in the opposite direction, it creates a basin that collects water. No self-respecting landscape architect will do that. * Check from the side of the green if you have an uphill or downhill putt. You can make this judgment by standing behind the putt. The side provides the best perspective for this and for determining the speed of the ball. For downhill putts, the low side of the green offers the best perspective for judging the terrain’s slope. * Stand behind the hole to judge the area around the hole. This area is crucial because a ball loses most of its speed by the time it gets to the hole. Here, the terrain can really influence the ball’s direction. * Read the green with your feet. Use your sense of balance to determine the green’s slope. It will also give you clues about the putt’s speeds * Stand behind the ball to make a final decision on the putt’s direction and speed. When you stand above the ball, your perspective changes, as does your impression of the line. Behind the ball is the best place to take a final look. Once you’ve made the decision, don’t change it. In addition, here’s a few putting tips I always highlight in my golf instruction: watch the roll of another player’s ball, don’t underestimate the break on a putt, and pay attention to the influ5779491

Ever hit a putt you thought was going in only to have it drift wide right? If you have, chances are you misread the green. My golf lessons teach that reading greens takes skill, good judgment, and experience. Since there’s no formula for determining the direction a ball must start based on the slope of the green and the distance to the hole, reading greens is key to sinking more putts. And sinking more putts, as my golf tips emphasize, produces a lower golf handicap. Let’s talk about ball speed for a second. Ball speed is critical in putting. The factors affecting speed are (1) the type of grass you’re putting on, (2) the direction the grass is growing, and (3) the moisture of the grass. Wet greens tend to slow a ball down. Fast greens tend to drift the ball away from the hole. Reading a green correctly—accounting for how these factors affect your putt— helps you determine not only the speed of a putt but also the direction. To sharpen your skill at this technique, we recommend developing a green-reading routine. Let’s look at the putting sequence before getting into specifics. First, your subconscious mind absorbs all the factors affecting ball speed and direction. Next, you decide how hard and where to hit the ball. Then, you putt. You judge the accuracy of your read by watching the putt. If it goes in, you’ve read the green correctly. If it goes by the hole, you’ve may have misread the green. My golf tips stress that experience contributes greatly to reading a green correctly. But I also recommend that you keep the following in mind as you approach a green: * Start thinking about the line of the putt as

He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher said, “okay, but don’t go into that field over there…”, as he pointed out the location. The DEA Agent verbally exploded and said, “look mister, I have the authority of the federal government with me!” Reaching into his rear back pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this badge?! This badge means I can go wherever I want… On any land! No questions asked, no answers given! Do you understand old man?!” The rancher kindly nodded, apologized, and went about his chores.
