CORNWALL, Ontario - We 3 Girls and Co. invite the community to “shop ‘til you drop” when their fifth annual Trunk Sale and Pamper Me Party is held, on Sunday Nov. 2 from 10-4, at Marlin Orchards. The event is raising funds for the local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. “With over 90 vendors to choose from, there is definitely something to be found for everyone on your list,” said co-organizer Debbie Burns. For many, this event is the unofficial kick-off to their holiday shopping season. Choose from a vast amount of local talented artists, artisans, Cornwall & area shopkeepers, as well as vendors coming from the Ottawa and Montreal markets. “This year, you can expect to see 40 brand new vendors to the show offering a wide range of items new to the market helping to create our unique, somewhat ‘one of a kind’ show,” said

Burns. Funds for the MS Society are raised through admission tickets, raffles, a percentage of sales, and a ‘sample for donation’ provided by several restaurant partners. To date, We 3 Girls and Co. have raised more than $40,000. Burns and Julie Hickman co-founded the fundraising group in 2010 with their first ever event held at Sign it Signs in Williamstown. With a much larger than expected crowd, they quickly realized that more help and a new venue was needed. Cue Marlins Orchards and the talents of Nancy Sylvester and Tony Lacroix. “This being our 5th year, we have worked very hard to bring our guests a little bit of everything,” she said. Tickets are $5 at the door. Skip the long lineup and pre-purchase them at Life’s Little Pleasures, Echo Trends, Marlins, Neo Vintage, Love Love Food, and Joe’s Place. CORNWALL, Ontario Five union locals along the St. Lawrence Seaway Tuesday gave 72 hours' strike notice. "The communities along the Seaway benefit both from the good jobs it provides, and the work our members do to keep the waterway safe," Unifor National Representative Joel Fournier said. One of the key issues in the contract talks is staffing levels at the locks as the Seaway moves to hands-free mooring, eliminating the staff currently working on the locks. Unifor is calling for minimum staffing levels on the locks to deal with emergencies.

Voting delay apology

The company charged with disseminating voting results through the United Counties has apologized for the election night fiasco. Scytl Canada North America general manager Brian O'Connor issued a statement Tuesday, apologizing for delays that left many voters wondering well past midnight just who had won elections in their municipality. The manual count led to a long night for candidates, voters and municipal staff.

MASSIVE CHANGES: New-look city council elected in Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - Angry voters have turfed four city councillors and Mayor Bob Kilger in a massive endorsement of change at city hall. The best finish for a new city councillor goes to Claude McIntosh, a journalist turned politician who raked in more than 5,000 votes and finished second only to Bernadette Clement who once again topped the results with more than 7,000. “I’m blown away by the margin,” said McIntosh. “I was shooting for 10th spot. I thought that would be a good place for me to finish.” But voters had other plans. “People told me they wanted change. And I wasn’t sure I believed it. But it was out there,” said McIntosh, who ran a bare-bones campaign. “I had 75 signs and every one of them, people asked me for them. I didn’t have to ask one person to put a sign up.” The new councillors also include Mark MacDonald, Justin Towndale, Carilyne Hebert and Brock Frost. Gone are Gerry Samson, Denis Carr, Glen Grant and Syd Gardiner. Hebert, who at 26 marks a new youth movement at city hall - something else voters clearly wanted - was the first person to file her nomination papers, way back in January.

She finished in seventh spot with nearly 4,400 votes. “Unreal. I’m thrilled,” Hebert said. “We ran a positive campaign. I had so many people behind me and we worked so hard for this. I knew I would be proud of our results, but this is above and beyond.” “I think I can bring energy and perspective that some of the others might not be able to. The issues youth dealt with now, and what they dealt with many years ago, are different.” Towndale and Frost both said when they approached voters while out knocking on doors the message was simple. “They wanted change,” said Towndale, who will parlay his experience working at Queen’s Park into that of a politician at city hall. Frost said voters were adamant. “I would consider this election a huge shakeup,” he said. Mark MacDonald, a former city councillor who lost to Mayor Bob Kilger in the last municiCouncillor-elect Mark MacDonald and a supporter view the election results Monday pal election, was delighted Monday night. night at the civic complex. “Things have gone wrong for four years,” he said. “And now with the new council there’s a lot Justin Towndale: 4,728 of challenges ahead. city council that he will helm to be steeped in transparency. “We’ve got to put some kind of policy in place regarding transparency and accountability,” he said. “It has to be done. No more surprises a year after something starts and the public finfsd out. “The community has to be brought along step by step.” O’Shaughnessy was able to capitalize on an anti-Kilger sentiment that was growing with each week of the 2014 municipal campaign. “It’s a long campaign. But basically what I did was let the community talk among themselves,” he said. “The strongest government you can have comes from the community up and that’s what we have

CO R N WA L L , O nt a r i o - Le s L i e O’Shaughnessy said Monday night he plans to follow through on his campaign promises. O’Shaughnessy, who ran on a pledge to increase transparency and accountability at city hall, was elected mayor defeating incumbent Bob Kilger by nearly 900 votes. The final tally saw O’Shaughnessy with 6,633 votes, followed by Kilger’s 5,751. I did it the way I’ve always done it.” He also conceded the issue of city council raises played a role in his defeat. City council voted itself a raise that would have been measured at a 40 per cent hike by the time the looming term of council is completed. “For some peope maybe that wasn’t acceptable and I respect that,” he said. Not surprisingly long-shot Jamie Gilcig was way back, garnering 725 votes.

It’s out of there,” said Coun.-elect Mark MacDonald. “The first issue to come back to the table is the 40 per cent raise. It’s number one, because that is going to set the tone for everything – the budget.”

Coun.-elect Claude McIntosh echoed those sentiments. “I dead against it,” he said. “I’m not going to accept it.” Justin Towndale, Brock Frost and Carilyne Hebert, all newcomers to city council, likewise agreed the raise is toast.

Buddy finds a home Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - One of three puppies dumped at the SDG branch of the Ontario SPCA was adopted minutes after the shelter’s doors opened on Monday. Local animal lovers lit up with concern after the shelter in Cornwall on Boundary Road asked for the public’s assistance in finding the person who dropped the three pups over their sevenfoot fence, and onto a patch of gravel, at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21. “People have been calling like crazy about them, but we had to wait until Monday to put them up for adoption,” said Stephanie Lapierre, an Ontario SPCA animal care attendant. “Within

the first five minutes, one of them was on its way home.” Named Buddy by his new owner, the black and white border collie-type puppy, is the first of the trio to be adopted. Lapierre is confident that Matty, the other border collie-cross, and Lola, a terrier-mix, will also find their way into a new home. “They’re very friendly,” she said. “And fortunately, none of them were hurt from the fall.” The adoption fee is $340, which covers taxes, spay/neuter, microchip implant, vaccinations, deworming treatment, flea treatment and six weeks of free Pet Watch Insurance. For more details, call the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry branch at (613) 936-0072.

River detectives dive into a polluted industrial past

adam.brazeau@tc.tc

Adam Brazeau

CORNWALL, Ontario - Two local scientists want your input as they uncover clues that link sediment in the bottom of the St. Lawrence River with the current health of the water. River Institute scientists Dr. Roxanne Razavi and Matt Windle will lead a talk for the Science and Nature on Tap series at Schnitzels in Cornwall on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The free event starts at 7 p.m. “This talk will be of special interest to all of us who make our home along the St. Lawrence River and care about its current status and its future,” said Karen Douglass Cooper, the Communications Officer for the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences. From studying mercury along the shores of the St. Lawrence to examining the human impacts of mercury in China, Razavi boasts an impressive resume of scientific work. Meanwhile, her fellow colleague has explored fish species at risk and both fresh and salt water ecosystems from coastal and inland waters across the country. In the summer, the river detectives joined forces to investigate the upper St. Lawrence by taking core samples of sediment. “For 30 years, since being declared a hotspot in the Great Lakes area, the St. Lawrence has been in a recovery mode and monitoring the progress is part of the process,” said Douglass. “Is the River healing? This session will explore what the science can tell us.” Gathering samples from the river bottom provides updated information for the Cornwall Sediment Strategy Program, a River Protection Plan developed ten years ago by local, provincial, and federal partners. The program is administered by the Raisin Region Conservation Authority and helps to safeguard vulnerable areas of the river from stirring up old buried contamination. “The detection of certain types of mercury and where it is found can provide important data to researchers seeking to determine how the St. Lawrence River is faring with respect to recovery from its polluted industrial past,” she said. Space for the session being held at Schnitzels European Flavours is limited. For more information or to reserve a seat, call (613) 936-6620 (ext. 229), e-mail kcooper@riverinstitute.ca or visit www.riverinstitute.ca.

As of October 15, 2014 carbon monoxide alarms are now mandatory in all residential homes in Ontario. The new CO alarm law makes it mandatory for every home in the province with fuel-burning appliances or heating systems, an attached garage or a wood or gas fireplace to have working CO alarms outside all sleeping areas. Homeowners are responsible for ensuring that their carbon monoxide alarms are properly maintained. Just like smoke alarms, all CO alarms have a test button that should be pressed monthly to confirm the alarm is functioning as it should. Batteries should be replaced at least once annually. not to fight,” said Nick as he fought back a tirade of emotions. She suffered from NUT midline carcinoma, an aggressive cancer she discovered during pregnancy, that had spread to her hips, pelvis, and spine - causing a tumour in her lung. “I wonder how her final months would have been different. Maybe rather than driving to the hospital on a near daily basis, we could have traveled to see parts of the world she wanted to see. I know she would have returned to P.E.I. to visit her family and friends. Things surely would have been different. Although she wouldn’t have been living with hope, and she would have died silently. By choosing to fight for her life, Stephanie unknowingly at the time made a lot of noise,” Nick added. The Gradys welcomed their daughter Danika in July 2013, and just several months later in November she underwent surgery to have the lung removed. Despite a grim diagnosis from doctors who pronounced her condition incurable, Stephanie never stopped fighting. She sought treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston in March. The exorbitant cost of the drug she required called a BET inhibitor, which was still in clinical trials and therefore wasn’t covered by OHIP, meant the Gradys needed funds, and fast. But the beloved St. Lawrence High School teacher who lived with her family in Long Sault was not alone. Not by far.

Cue Team Grady and the We’re NUT Givin’ Up fundraising campaign that raised $200,000 through a series of tournaments and events across SDG in only three months. “To be honest we weren’t quite sure what to think. We really didn’t want to reach out for help. But at the same time, we knew we probably weren’t going to be able to do it on our own either,” he said. Brockville resident Heather Lisney, an instrumental part of the fundraising campaign, said the pavilion will be the first of many ways in which Team Grady, in collaboration with Nick Grady and Jennifer Doyle, will be giving back to honour Stephanie with the remaining funds from the campaign. Nick handed over a $15,000 cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope program in the SDG & Prescott-Russell areas at the event. Funds will also be used to help purchase new equipment for the Cornwall Community Hospital’s new chemotherapy wing, to support Winchester District Memorial and Ottawa General Hospitals, and to establish an employee illness relief program for UCDSB staff members. Annual bursaries will also be established at Rothwell-Osnabruck High School and Charlottetown Rural High School in PEI, and through some of the local churches. Nick is also working with local hockey organizations to facilitate opportunities for more children to participate.

‘THE TOE’ IMMORTALIZED: Famous CFLer has memoir penned by his son CORNWALL, Ontario - The story of Moe Racine’s success in the CFL is being told in a new book that, not surprisingly, has been written by his son Thom. And despite all the stories of his success on and off the field - he was a four-time Grey Cup champion with the Ottawa Rough Riders - in an interview there are other things that stick out. “My legs,” he said with a laugh. “My legs were so big and strong.” That shouldn’t come as a surprise. Racine got the nickname ‘The Toe’ for his kicking exploits that resulted in 392 career points and numerous all-star recognitions. “Everyone I played with said I mentioned in the book my speed and strength,” he said, almost

dismissively. Racine, despite his success on the field, has never been one to seek the spotlight. He can thank his son Thom, a former police officer who has jumped into writing with both feet, who put together “Moe The Toe - Never My Dream.” The memoir tells the story, and then some, of a shy Cornwall boy who became a man on the football field. “If one wanted to follow my old man’s career, you only had to go to the boxes,” said Thom, alluding to the reams of material the family kept over the years. “I had a real head start.” The book includes interviews and recollections with dozens of former CFLers who lined up with, and against, the elder Racine. It also tells the story of a sporting family that

has roots deep in the Seaway City. “On game days you never attempt to talk to your father,” said Thom. “He took his job very seriously.” The book goes into great detail concerning the 1973 Rough Rider championship, what Moe refers to as “My Grey Cup.” The ‘73 team was not expected to win, but Moe points out that his teammates wouldn’t have it any other way. “We had such a great group of guys. We were a real team,” he said. ‘Moe The Toe’ also tells the story of the elder Racine’s girlfriend Sylvia, whom was known to his wife Donna. But before readers can get too bent out of shape it is revealed that Sylvia is a hotel in Vancouver, where the Rough Riders would stay during games against the Lions. “My dad had a girlfriend,” Thom said with a laugh, telling the story of how wide-eyed football players would enjoy being wined and dined at a hotel that was bigger and better than they would see in most other locales. ‘Moe The Toe’ will be available Sunday at the

Canada World Youth group arrives in Cornwall

Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A group of 18 volunteers from Vietnam and other parts of Canada have arrived in Cornwall for a unique two-month culture and volunteer exchange through the Canada World Youth organization. Nine people from Canada recently travelled to Vietnam where they were paired with nine Vietnamese for a two-month volunteer placement. The group is now in Cornwall for a similar education and volunteer experience until Dec. 21. “It is an exchange of culture, ideas and information and a very rewarding experience for all involved,” said David Arsenault, program supervisor with Canada World Youth. The group arrived on Oct. 20, and the volunteers will be staying in pairs with host families and completing work placements with organizations such as Agape Centre, Canadian Cancer Society, United

Way, Seaway Valley Community Health Centre and others. On Oct. 21, the group received an official welcome to the city from Mayor Bob Kilger followed by a short tour of Cornwall on a Cornwall Transit bus. They got a first-hand view of the city’s landmarks, sports facilities, commercial areas and other amenities. To make it easier for the volunteers to experience life in Cornwall, Canada World Youth partnered with Cornwall Transit to equip each participant with a bus pass for the duration of their stay. “These are bright, hard working young adults that are looking to make a difference in the short time they are in Cornwall,” said Arsenault. Integration into a family and volunteer work with local agencies and organizations are key goals of the program. They provide youth volunteers an opportunity to learn about the region as well as the local lifestyle and culture. This is the first time that Canada World Youth has run a program in Cornwall.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Dwayne Doyle stood guard at the Cornwall Cenotaph Saturday morning surrounded by fellow veterans, bikers, and community members, with their heads bowed low but spirits held high. They gathered to honour Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was killed after being struck in a hit-and-run attack in Quebec on Oct. 20, and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was gunned down days later at the war memorial on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. “It’s important to show our support - not only as a community, but also to show our resolve as a nation,” said Doyle, 41. “We are not going to bow down in fear like they want us to do.” The 41-year-old Cornwall resident, who served with the Canadian Forces for 12 years

and retired seven years ago, was proud to join veterans and soldiers all across Canada on Oct. 25, as they paid tribute to Cirillo and Vincent by holding vigils at various war memorials, landmarks, and cenotaphs. Doyle is also a member of the local Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers (CMC). Of the 25 people at the cenotaph, nearly half were bikers. “We’re here to support the troops,” said Cornwallite Steph St. Louis, a member of the Road Snakes Riders Club. A candlelight vigil hosted by the Friends of Vets was originally scheduled for Oct. 22 to honour Canadian soldiers and RCMP officers lost to suicide. But due to the recent senseless tragedies, for safety reasons it was postponed. The peer support group will decide a future date at their next group meeting. Denis Labbe, Friends of Vets vice-president, wanted to do his part to draw attention to the

opinion

We got what we wished for - now what? Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Bill Kingston owes me five bucks. The former radio journalist who now helms Cornwall Newswatch agreed to a little wager with yours truly in the days leading up to Monday’s election. The bet was a simple one: who would more accurately predict the results of the election, specifically the names of councillors candidates who went down to defeat. Of the four who were shown the door, I got three correct. The decision to turf Glen Grant kind of surprised me, but when one looks at the election results (specifically some of the new faces) that’s exactly what comes to mind – surprise. But it shouldn’t. If there was ever an election that contained a strong demand for change it would have to be this year. Voters, angry at tax increases, raises for city councillors, accusations of mismanagement and secret dealings had had enough…big time. Leslie O’Shaughnessy, the mayor-elect, and I have butted heads during the campaign over the phraseology of his decision to leave city council during this term. I call it ‘quit’…he says ‘resigned in protest.’ Based on the results Monday night you can make three conclusions…no one cares what Lihou says, no one reads what Lihou writes… or O’Shaughnessy was right. Hint: it’s the last one, at least as far as voters are concerned. You have to give credit where it is due. O’Shaughnessy saw a way to defeat Kilger and he exploited it. There’s no doubt that the antiKilger sentiment that dominated the campaign grew exponentially as the race unfolded. And while the soon-to-be ex-mayor

tried his best to rise against the tide that was forming against him, there was no escaping the wave of change that swept him and longtime colleagues Denis Carr, Syd Gardiner as well as newcomer Gerry Samson out of office. O’Shaughnessy now finds himself with a monumental challenge. The former city councillor who also spent time as a mayor in the former Charlottenburgh Township, not to mention a stint as the warden of the United Counties, will lead a council that is short on experience. But maybe that’s exactly what we need? Time, as it always does, will tell. Claude McIntosh, Brock Frost, Justin Towndale and Carilyne Hebert are rookies in every sense of the word. They all have different strengths, but experience as a member of public office is not one of them. Mark MacDonald, after a couple of election defeats (one for mayor, the other for MPP) put enough together in this race to return to the table, and offers some of the experience his new colleagues are lacking. Forgotten in the hub-bub of all the new blood around the council table is the fact that the city’s top administrator, CAO Norm Levac, has announced his intention to retire in the new year. If there was ever an opportunity for a fresh approach to municipal government in Cornwall, it is now. All of the planets have lined up. The other way to look at it is this – we got what we asked for. Now what? ELECTION NIGHT NOTES: WHITE WASH Are you kidding me people…Stephanie White got 2,000 votes? She’s the same one who voluntarily pulled out of the race days after the nominations closed.

wasn’t enough to translate into a victory. In my comments on Cogeco on election night I suggested the only thing people could take to the bank would be that hardworking, deserving people, would not get elected. St-Jean and Bennett represent that sentiment in spades. LEFT-LEANING COUNCIL? Big party politics are supposed to stay out of city hall, but if one looks at the new makeup of city council, it looks like there is a decided shift to the left. Newcomers Mark MacDonald, Carilyne Hebert, Justin Towndale, as well as incumbents Bernadette Clement, Elaine MacDonald and Maurice Dupelle, have an ideological bend that is decidedly left leaning. One has to wonder how this will play out, say, during budget deliberations when outside agencies begin clamouring for more money out of city hall.

Mayer’s column proof that sexism lives on Dear Editor, In response to the opinion piece by Brandon Mayer: The issue of sexism is alive and prevalent, Brandon. Your own example is proof of that. Why is it that the boys’ clothes are professing the wearer to be a “future super hero” and yet the biggest aspiration for the girls’ as claimed by their outfit is to date said super hero? Teaching young boys to be selfsufficient and strong is great, but teaching young girls to simply find one of those boys

to latch on to is not. As parent to both a boy and girl, it is my responsibility not to thoughtlessly purchase these “labels” and perhaps influence their self-esteem in a negative way. However, it is only by first recognizing that this is sexism, and then discussing it accordingly as Prof. Logel is doing, that young girls and boys may begin to learn that although media messages are everywhere, they are often inaccurate and incomplete. Can someone explain to me why 2,000 people voted for someone who didn’t want the job and did no campaigning to speak of? DISAPPOINTING RESULTS You’ve got to feel terrible for guys like Guy St-Jean and Todd Bennett – especially Bennett. The guy finished just out of the running in 2010, by 1,300 votes. He did exactly what voters told him to, joining city committees, volunteering and attending nearly every council meeting. The result this time? He finished even further back than he did in 2010, a disappointing 15th. St-Jean finished just out of the running, in 11th, about 350 votes behind incumbent Andre Rivette who was able to keep his job, even if just barely. St-Jean impressed me, and a slew of others, during the campaign. Obviously it

OPINION

Canada honours Malala with honourary citizenship OPINION COLUMN SULTAN JESSA The youngest Nobel laureate ever is also the youngest person to be awarded honourary Canadian citizenship. Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani child rights activist, has been relentlessly working for rights of education and for women particularly in those areas where girls are banned from attending schools. Prime Minister Stephen Harper was compelled to postpone honouring Malala’s courage and campaign because of the crisis in Ottawa when a lone gunman burst into the House of Commons and started firing after killing a soldier at the War Memorial. Malala has become the sixth person being honoured by the Canadian government.

In October 2012, Malala – then only 15 years old - was shot by a Taliban gunman in the face as a show of the fundamentalists’ opposition to her efforts to promote schooling for girls. The young girl survived and she is today being celebrated and feted as an international symbol and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Ottawa and the House of Commons have to be lauded for honouring Malala. Malala is famously known as the girl who braved Taliban bullets while on her way back from school in Swat, Pakistan. Since the ordeal the young girl has been devoting her full time advocating for girl’s education on international platforms. On her 16th birthday on July 12, 2014, she spoke at the United Nations in New York calling for girl’s education worldwide. The UN dubbed the event “Malala Day.”

Canada does not give out honourary citizenship lightly. Among others who have received the honour are Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Aung Sun Kyi, His Highness the Aga Khan and Raoul Wallenberg. Malala nearly died when she was shot by a Taliban gunman. But, since the she has shown courage and recovered and also inspired many people around the world. She continues to inspire others. Malala is a reminder to us that women will not be silenced or threatened into silence. She has become the global spokes person on the importance to education. Malala won the Nobel Peace Prize with Kailash Satyarthi, the 60-year-old children’s activist from India. It would have been nice to see Canada honour the two Nobel laureates, a

Pakistani and an Indian at the same time. Malala became an instant celebrity by accident. Satyarthi’s work has not been in the international limelight. As a six year old boy, the Indian started a soccer club, using the membership fees to pay the school fees for children too poor to afford them. He and a friend collected donations of 2,000 school books in a single day. This project eventually became a book bank in his town. Satyarthi, who was inspired by Gandhi, chaired a global march against child labour through 60 countries around the world in 1998. He has won multiple international awards including the Robert F. Kennedy Human rights Award. His work has included raids on factories rescuing children from enslavement.

The Ultimate Non-Surgical Neck Lift

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2014

At the Canadian Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than raising awareness, it’s about taking action to save lives. In the last 20 years, the Society invested close to $100 million in breast cancer research, Research leading to earlier detection and better therapies, which in part led to a 43% drop in the breast cancer death rate since the 1980s. Screening The Society’s Women to Women and Screening Saves Lives initiatives provide women with the information and support they need to get mammograms. Support Our transportation, information and peer support services help people living with breast cancer cope with the disease. Advocacy We are challenging the Ontario government to reduce the financial burden and distress that cancer patients and their families can face during treatment. Fundraising Our ability to help women is only made possible through the generous donations and fundraising efforts of Canadians everywhere.

If age or weight loss has been unkind to your neck area, you will be pleased to know you have some great options that will help you defy gravity and turn back time! Vitalglow is please to offer you the ultimate nonsurgical neck lift that involves combining the tried and proven candace technologies of the Thermage and Reaction ReLift. The Thermage treatment uses a wide form of radio frequency (RF) energy to heat the deeper layers of your skin which will encourage your skin to increase its collagen growth. Collagen is what gives your skin its tightness and elasticity. This effect diminishes

fine lines and wrinkles and gives your skin a more youthful look. Thermage is perfect for the neck and face. To target areas that may contain unwanted fat deposits, the Reaction ReLift takes over. The Reaction ReLift also uses RF energy, but can target specific areas and skin depths using its patented vacuum technology. The result increases collagen growth with the added benefit of shrinking targeted fat cells. Using these two technologies together, we can reshape your neck area by tightening the skin and reducing fat cell size in the right areas. Sounds just like a surgical face lift doesn’t it, but there is no expensive surgery involved and there is no downtime. If this treatment interests you, you can have a free no-commitment consultation by calling Vitalglow at 613-938-9255 or visit us at www. vitalglow.com.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in women in Canada. In 2014, an estimated 24,600 Canadians will be diagnosed with breast cancer and an estimated 5,000 will die of the disease. Today, 88% of Canadians diagnosed with breast cancer will survive. Close to 24,000 lives were saved since the mid-1980s, thanks in part to the Society’s efforts to increase screening rates and our investment in research.

People with diabetes know they must monitor their blood sugar levels on a daily basis. It’s vital to maintain a healthy level of blood sugar, and doing so often comes down to making smart dietary choices. Those who have diabetes should be careful when choosing sweeteners and foods that may cause rapid changes in their blood sugar. Agave syrup, a derivative of the agave plant, may provide a solution for diabetics. Agave has long been used in Mexico and other parts of Latin America as part of a traditional diet. Its recent introduction to the American market is likely a byproduct of increased interest in diabetic-friendly foods. Agave syrup has a low glycemic index, which is used to determine a food’s ability to raise blood sugar to a particular level within a given period of time. However, not all agave nectar and syrup is produced in the same way, so products often differ with regard to how they affect blood sugar levels. Individuals with diabetes should exercise caution when introducing new foods into their diets and should continue to carefully monitor their blood sugar levels.

Save money on energy bills (NC)—Home is where the heart is, where families grow, and generally where the most of our leisure time is spent.. Working with green technology for the best insulation will keep your house warm, welcoming, comfortable and cozy—and will save you money, all at the same time. Insulation advancements are on the horizon at all times, experts say. Take a look an innovation by Icynene, for example. Their soft, expanding spray foam insulation and air barrier material, protects homeowners from the harmful outdoor environment and from energy-robbing air leakage. Icynene pioneered the spray

foam technology and now leads in industry training. Why are homeowners turning to spray foam insulation? Experts tell us that older insulation types such as fibreglass, will settle, compact and sag over time, decreasing their insulation properties. Spray foam insulation is energy efficient, says Icynene, and it has a high R-value due to its ability to seal and insulate at the same time. The spray foam solutions are created with water blowing agents and renewable and recycled content, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions to support a healthier environment. Spray foam insulation can be used

in new home construction or additions and insulation upgrades to existing homes (attics, crawlspaces) during remodeling projects. With spray foam insulation you can maintain healthy indoor air while reducing your HVAC equipment needs and saving in energy bills. In addition, homeowners can conserve construction materials without the need for excess sealing and still achieve optimal airtightness. Spray foam insulation doesn’t off gas over time, performs at peak levels for the lifetime of your home, and because airborne moisture is controlled, the durability of the building remains unthreatened by the growth of mould and mildew.

Autumn: time for a good clean-up! Autumn is as good a time as spring to do a clean-up around the house. It’s for this reason that October was designated Autumn Inspection Month. Some of the necessary jobs can be done easily while others need the expertise of specialists. First of all, the job of closing the pool has to be tackled. Check to see if there are any repairs to be done before the winter. For an above-ground pool, lower the level of the water to about 30 cm (12 inches) below the level of the filter. After cleaning the pool thoroughly, pour in the products included in the pool-closing kit and store pool accessories in a dry place. Do a good clean-up of your garage or your shed. Store the pool accessories, garden furniture, bicycles, the lawnmower, gardening tools and the barbecue at the back. Then find a handy place for the snow blower, the shovels and winter sports equipment, etc. Before being put away for the winter, some

items such as the garden furniture and the barbecue need a good cleaning, and other things like lawnmowers need tune ups. Well before winter arrives, protect any young trees or shrubs by wrapping them with a wooden or plastic snow fence, jute or geotextile canvas. Tie the branches together to protect them from the weight of the snow. Spread earth or compost on your flower beds. Annual bulbs should be dug up and stored where they will be protected from frost. Prune perennials and cover them with mulch. Mow the grass one last time, taking care to pick up all the grass cuttings.

Top up your attic with PINK and save on GREEN (NC)—For homeowners, spring is a time for cleaning, household chores and most importantly, checking the state of their house after the harsh winter weather. Inspecting the outside of the home is a great starting point, but don’t forget to inspect indoor areas as well. Determine what areas of the home could be prone to drafts and gaps caused by extreme weather conditions, creating a less than energy efficient home. “After a long winter, homeowners should inspect the home to see if any areas or equipment have been affected by the cold, especially the top of the home which bears the brunt of winter weather,” says David Flood, insulation expert at Owens Corning. “A quick renovation project, like topping up your attic with insulation can help protect the home by eliminating leaks caused by drafts and gaps, helping homeowners save* on energy bills.” How to get started? To meet the recommended standard of R–50, install up to 15 inches of the new EcoTouch™ PINK™ FIBERGLAS® insulation batts to save up to 28* per cent on heating and cooling costs, and replenish your

home from winter damage. You’ll do your part for the environment too, since the new EcoTouch™ PINK™ insulation batts are made from over 70*** per cent recycled content, the highest in the industry, and natural**** materials. Most importantly, by meeting the recommended standard of insulation in your attic you’ll help save up to a half ton** of greenhouse gas emissions every year, year after year. Not only is updating your attic insulation easy, but with all the energy you’ll be saving, it’s friendly to the environment and your wallet as well. More information on home renovations can be found at www.owenscorning.ca. *Savings vary depending on the original amount of insulation in your home, climate, house size, air leaks and personal energy use and living habits. **Based on an average attic size of 1700 SF with existing R19 insulation, averaged over seven Corning fiberglass batts, rolls and unbonded plant–based compounds. cities in Canada. What’s old is new again in home décor Loving Linoleum – The vinyl and linoleum flooring that became popular in the 50s are both back and better then ever. Allure’s line of vinyl floors is available in a wide selection of colours and textures. Frank recommends the new Easy GripStrip Installation to make this an easy DIY project. All you need to do is lay this new flooring over old floors. No prep or messy glue required. Carpeting – While the brightly coloured shag carpeting of the 1970s has yet to make a comeback, the cost and comfort of wall–to– wall carpeting has kept this trend alive. Frank says Canadians are no longer sticking to neutrals when it comes to carpeting – we’re getting more adventurous with colour again. The

new line of Martha Stewart Living carpets offers homeowners rich colours, patterns and textures. Bold browns, avocado greens and rich reds are a few examples of colours being introduced to the decorating world. (NC)—Vintage trends have been appearing everywhere in recent years; from the return of 60s fashion to cocktails, even slow cooking. The cliché “what’s old is new again” rings true more than ever when it comes to home décor. Frank Turco, senior manager, trend and design, The Home Depot Canada, shares some of the biggest décor comebacks for the season and how to make them work in your home: Mirrored Tile – In the 80s, everything and anything that could be covered in mirror was – closet doors, ceilings, even entire walls. While the trend has returned, Frank suggests combining the look of mirrored tiles with a standard tile to give the bathroom a sleek and sophisticated look.

How to lose your snap-hook in 5 minutes

This story is for you if... • You're a good player, but you struggle with hooks • On the tee, you always fear the ball going left • You sometimes follow a snap-hook with a way-right slice The Problem Your most common mistake off the tee during the round you just finished was short and left — an ugly snap-hook that got you into tons of trouble. The Solution You snap it when your right hand slips underneath your left hand in the downswing. The clubface swings open, and the only way to get it square is to arch your right wrist and snap the clubface — and the ball — to the left. To fix it, keep the heel of your right palm on the grip

on the way back down so it doesn't slip underneath and force you to make the snap compensation. Try This Take a tee and place it between your two hands as you grip the club; the tee should be wedged between the top knuckle of your left thumb and the heel of your right palm at the base of your right thumb. Hit balls on the range and make sure that the tee doesn't come out during your swing. It may help to imagine that the tee is a thumbtack that you're trying to push into your left hand at impact. When you lift your right palm off the grip to help close the clubface, you're headed left. If you start hitting some shots to the right, that's O.K. Just start rotating your right hand over your left earlier in your downswing, but always keep your right hand on the grip. Why It Works Many good players — even guys like Fred Couples and Vijay Singh — let their right palm come off the club to keep the ball from going Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry & Akwesasne right. For guys with great timing like Singh and Couples this can work, but for most players it's a recipe for regular snap-hooks. Keep it simple and make sure your right hand stays above He dominates the conversation. your left in the downswing. CORNWALL, Ontario - If you’ve got it, why not walk the runway for a worthy cause like the SD&G branch of the Ontario SPCA? The second annual charity fashion show and auction raised $9,100, falling just short of its $10,000 goal, at the Best Western Parkway Inn in Cornwall, on Oct. 25. “Thank you to everyone who came out to support the event,” said organizer Christina Russell. Dozens of models strutted on the runway, as animal lovers bid in a silent auction with 100 items. “The models had a great time showing off their outfits and knew how to entertain the crowd,” said Russell. Clothing being modeled featured the latest fashion trends of The Squire Shop, workwear from TSC, and Jewelry from Stella & Dot. Special guest Johnny Taco from Wild Country 96.5 FM once again joined Russell as co-host. In its inaugural run, the event raised $8,500. Major sponsors this year included the Law Firm of Gordon Scott Campbell, Russell’s Hoof

Astro Printing

The Ladouceur family’s involvement in the printing business began, locally, over a halfcentury ago, and although the digital age has certainly made its mark in the printing world, old-fashioned, time-tested methods are still very much at work at Astro Printing. “We are a general, commercial printing business, offering graphic design, printing and binding services,” explained co-owner, Marc Ladouceur. “Essentially, everything that has to do with the general public or local business for day to day printing needs - business cards, office forms, stationary, wedding invitations, stag tickets and memorial cards.” And the list goes on. Something that is very popular now, says Marc, is their book binding service. He says that many people want to leave a legacy to their family, by putting their life story in book-form, along with photographs. Just bring your text and photos in, and the on-staff graphic designers will put it all together for you, in hard or soft cover, for a very professional look. The business has certainly grown with the times, and they are fully equipped with all the latest in digital technology, says Marc, however, large orders are still filled on the offset printing machine. The difference, he explains, is that the quantities don’t matter anymore. Where there was a time that a large order would have to be placed in order to make it cost effective, with the digital printer, small orders are easy and affordable. It also means that you can get your order faster.

AGAPE CENTRE: Why not move? by agape centre Over the past 43 years of operation, the Agapè Centre has had tremendous support from the community and this has made it possible for the Centre to deliver emergency food services to low income residents living in Cornwall. In June 1977, Agapè was operating from a garage. With the help of St. John Bosco Parish, Agapè opened its doors at 818 York St. on October 19, 1977. On November, 1989, the Agapè Centre moved to 301-C McConnell Avenue. Since 2001, the Centre has seen staggering increases in the number of the people assisted. An acute need for additional space was needed. The Centre undertook a capital campaign and purchased the building, Saint Columban’s Parish Centre December 2006, on 40 Fifth Street West, Cornwall which is where we still are. The building is centrally located, has ample parking, is accessible by bus and is built for Agapè’s needs. However, the maintenance and heating bills started to become costly and so management and the Board of Directors looked at the pros and cons of moving to a different location. They conducted a feasibility study as well as received expert advice from local commercial realtors. The result: the cost of moving to a new location, whether it is a lease, build or buy, far outweighed the cost of staying. An engineer was then hired to look at Agapè’s heating system. Currently, the building is heated using a hydronic hot water system. The hydronic system is mostly original to the building, with the exception of the boiler and several pumps. Agapè has, over the last few years, had to call for repairs multiple times per month to patch sections of piping which have leaked. It worsened and has been difficult to maintain as repairs consisted of patching on top of patches from previous leaks. It was recommended to replace the heating systems. The condition of the hydronic piping is the main concern for the building systems. With the age of the systems and the amount spent on maintenance costs, the existing system appears to be at/ near the end of its useful lifespan. Our building has become home to many. This facility provides a vital physical location from which we are able to receive more than 500 visits a day and serve our residents through the services that are hosted within our walls. With enthusiasm, vision and careful planning, our building renovation is intended to provide a safer, more accessible environment for our clients, volunteers, staff and customers and save on costs. Please support our building campaign by making a donation to support the WITHIN THESE WALLS Building Campaign by contacting the Agapè Centre at 613.938.9297 or ablais@agapecentre.ca or mailing a cheque to Agapè Centre, 40 Fifth St. West, Cornwall, ON K6J 2T4.

- Cornwall Expess - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

Keeping God’s commands PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE PASTOR JOHN SCORGIE

RELIGION & OBITUARIES

Talk about confusion. Human beings have made a royal mess of trying to rightly interpret and properly apply the commandments of God from Scripture. There is so much misunderstanding on this one key point of the law of God and its role in our lives. The law of God is definitely a reflection of who God is in His eternal nature – good, holy, just, wise, and righteous. The law of the Lord is also a plain indication of how He

wants us to live ethically on earth. Those two salient points should be clear enough and, hopefully, you would concur. But from that point on there are multiple and divergent and contradictory views on the commands of God. So many people think that if they just keep all of God’s commands they will be assured of heaven one day. Not so. We’ve all blown it! We all have fallen far short of perfect conformity to the holy law of God. Those broken commands should make us keenly and humbly aware of our great

need of God’s grace and forgiveness. But the law still stands, so how do we respond? Some people respond in tremendous fear. They attempt to obey God’s laws out of total dread of His punishment. That is so unfortunate! Some people respond in pure self-interest. They attempt to obey God’s law and thereby make a sweet deal with Him to secure God’s leniency. That too is erroneous! Then there are some people who seek to obey the commands of God out of sincere love for Him. Their obedience flows from a

heart of love for God, having already repented and believed in the Son of God alone for their salvation. Now that, my friends, is the proper, spiritual dynamic in seeking to obey God’s commands, all in His strength and all for His glory!

Nick Wolochatiuk dances with words

www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Seaway News - Thursday, October 30, 2014 - 37

In 2005 I decided to travel from Vancouver Island to St. John’s Newfoundland by hitchbiking (‘hitchbiking’: travel by bicycle and thumb) with my dog Keesha. No tent, no fixed itinerary, just maps, lots of optimism and a sense of serendipity. When a close family member heard of my plan, he uttered, “No way! Do you know what kind of strangers you could meet when you’re hitch-hiking!” A close friend confronted me with another negative question, “What if you got very sick or badly injured! Who would take care of the dog?” It took from early April to mid-October to get back home. We slept on park benches, in picnic shelters and airline terminals and in homes and cottages of strangers who took us in. I met hundreds of wonderful strangers – and I didn’t get sick or injured. Whether I’m in my own village, or in a distant city, or waiting for a flight at an airport, or on a wilderness lake or trail, I talk with strangers. I do more questioning and listening than just talking. That’s how I learn, that’s how my life gets enriched. Among my favourite strangers are barbers, birdwatchers, canoeists, construction workers, hikers, pilots, policemen, street people, truck drivers and, oh yes - did I mention pilots? If I were to see a stranger on a motorcycle such as the one in this week’s illustration, I’d look carefully, do a lot of wondering and then

ask questions such as these: I don’t see a make or model. Who manufactured it? The side-car, trailer and panniers are quite unusual. What kind of travel do you do with it? It’s obviously not a modern Yamaha or a Honda. It looks old, but in fine condition. Did it have to be restored or was it always in such pristine condition? Its drab brown colour scheme suggests it was used by the military. What army? What was its original role? It looks almost older than you. How long have you had it? Would you mind if I took a picture of you and your fine machine? An encounter with a stranger such as Hubertus von Ruville of Jever, Germany would be more than enough to make my day. It would make my week, my weekly commitment to write a column, (a column every week since 1994). I talk to strangers, and strangers talk to me. A stranger is just a person you’ve never met. He (or she) can become an acquaintance, even a friend, if you are just willing to ignite a conversation with the next stranger you meet. The stranger is the brother of my friend Sigrid Kube, from Finch, who supplied the photo. He will get a copy of this column. I hope he will provide us with answers to my many questions, to be published in a future column. In the meantime, are there any motorcycle aficionados out there who could share their knowledge about this type of motorcycle?

Be sure to talk with strangers!

613-938-8451 Is it just us, or have construction crews decided to do all their work at once in Cornwall? The bridge is being torn down, Second Street is being reduced to one lane. Marlborough Street is a disaster, as is Ninth Street. You need a map and Sherman tank to navigate parts of the city, these days.

Voters want to know why Stephanie White got so many ballots cast in her favour. People were stopping us Monday night, and via social media, to demand answers. Wish we had some for you – but many of those votes could have gone to other candidates who sorely needed them.

From a reader … Radio announcers should stick to announcing and leave E-Bikes, E-trikes and traffic alone. The police should be looking after this problem, if there is one. E-Bikes, E-Trikes and Bicycles are doing everyone else a favour by slowing traffic down and eliminating pollution. While like everything else, there are always people that will abuse the system and drive in the middle of the road and like car drivers using their phones, they should be heavily fined and put off the road. Don’t let a few people spoil it for everyone. Pet Tip of the Week: Be a responsible pet owner! On Halloween evening, it’s best to keep your pets inside and away from outside doors. They may be confused or frightened by the costumes and masks of the young trickor-treaters who come to your door. Candy is not good for your animal companions. Don’t allow children to share their Halloween treats with your pet. Candy, particularly chocolate, is toxic for animals and can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart problems and even lead to death. The best treats for your cat or dog are specially made treats purchased from the pet store or your veterinarian. Also, never leave lighted candles unattended! Pets are attracted to the light in a darkened room and a tail flicked through the flame can result in serious burns.

9-Day Tour

Following his election night win, the big question we have been asked here at Seaway News is “What is to become of Claude McIntosh and his column?” The answer is Mac will return, but we’ve made a decision that he can no longer write about city hall issues. He agrees with our policy. But his column will include other tidbits about Cornwall, heavily influenced by local history. Check it out, next week.
