BIG BENEFIT

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall and District (BBBS), as well as their friends at the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall (BGC), are often miscast when it comes to the good work they do on behalf of young people and their families in the Seaway City. From left are BGC executive director Jacquie Richards, Hannah Alguire, Gabriel Albers and BBBS executive director Amanda Brisson. Check out the differences (and similarities) between the two groups on Page 29.

NERDS UNITE: Cornwall’s comic book

Time for your flu shot

CORNWALL, Ontario - Flu season, not unlike winter, is just around the corner. Starting on Oct. 27, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit will begin holding seasonal flu immunization clinics throughout the five eastern counties. In addition to the community clinics, the health unit will hold clinics by appointment at its offices for people with young children, physical limitations, medical considerations or special needs. A pamphlet announcing clinic dates, times and locations has been mailed out to every household. The pamphlet can also be found on the EOHU’s website at www.eohu.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Let’s face facts - these days, it’s cool to be a nerd. Superhero movies are raking in billions of dollars, TV shows like The Big Bang Theory are at the top of the ratings list, and public events like Comicon and others are drawing huge numbers. With that in mind, a Cornwall event is taking shape that will bring under one roof everything you can imagine that flies, fights crime, and wears a costumer. The Cornwall and Are Pop Event (CAPE) will take place April 18 in the Seaway City. The acronym plays off the ‘cape’ that nearly every superhero includes in their costume.

Randy Sauve, owner of the wildly popular Cornwall comic book store Fantasy Realm, as well as his partner Carol Grant, are organizing the event. “It’s about three years we have been planning this,” said Grant, adding the couple have visited a number of Comicon-type events recently, to gain some knowledge about how to organize such an event. They’re also local experts in the field of comics. Fantasy Realm carved a niche for itself 30 years ago on Pitt Street and continues to be a local hub for everything from Spider-Man to Godzilla. Sauve said the Cornwall market is ripe for this type of exposition. “Cornwall is ready,” he said. There have been other events, to be sure, in Cornwall that focused on comics and superheroes. Cornwall’s Tiny Convention (CoTiCon), took place earlier this summer, and ‘Heroes of the North’ (HOTN) a popular web series, held an autograph session last year at Fantasy Realm. But the CAPE event will take place on a grand scale. Grant said organizers are in the process of securing a large venue in Cornwall that will support dozens of exhibitors, vehicles, and special guests. She and Sauve weren’t ready to divulge specifics yet, but they said comic book artists from

Housing authority massages air conditioner policy CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall and Area Housing Authority is backing off on a plan that would have shelved window-based air conditioners in many of its units. Housing authority manager Peggy Fulton said Tuesday window-based air-conditioning units will now be permitted, so long as they are protected by a balcony, or if they fit within a sleeve in a wall. In addition, the housing authority is seeking to offer so-called “preferred pricing” on new airconditioning units that meet the new rules, in

an effort to offset the high cost of purchasing additional equipment. Many residents dwelling within housing authority units are on a fixed income, or pension. “We want to ensure the safety of our tenants and the public at large,” said Fulton. “We have the benefit of time and we hope to come up with suitable solutions for all of our tenants before the beginning of the next summer season.” Seaway News reported weeks ago that dozens of housing authority residents were miffed because the agency was changing the rules

Fulton said at the time such a scenario presented a liability issue for the authority. But residents complained to Seaway News,

CORNWALL, Ontario - Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) of SDG&A and the Agape Centre have teamed up for Glam Swap, the ultimate girls’ night out. First and foremost, this is not your typical fundraiser. Unless you’re a Cornwall firefighter volunteering at the event as a server for the evening, it’s strictly women only. Organizers say it’s a chance to relax, mingle, eat, drink, swap things you no longer need or wear. “We just wanted to have a fun women’s only night that supports two great organizations in our community,” said Trudy Watt, public education coordinator for SASS. So, how does it work? Buy a ticket. Bring a minimum of 10 items to the Agape reception desk by Wednesday October 22. Then, on the night of the swap, you can take home as many items as you brought – for free. Items should be trendy/fashionable/classic clothing, jewelry, purses, shoes, and accessories in good condition and quality only. All clothes should also be freshly laundered. “We are asking for trendy and classic pieces as all of the remaining items will stay at the Agape,” said Watt. All funds raised will be split between both non-profit agencies. “We wanted to give people a taste of what

World cycling tour against MS rolls through ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Multiple Sclerosis may have confined Gérard Guillouzic to a wheelchair, but the 54-year-old France resident is too busy travelling the world to let the disease slow him down. Guillouzic is part of a six man team participating in the World Cycling Tour Against Multiple Sclerosis that left from their hometown in Lille, France on July 12, to trek across Canada, Bolivia, South Africa, Australia, Japan, and Turkey, before ending in Paris exactly one year later. The goal is to meet people affected by the disease and organizations that help combat MS and its effects, like the MS Society in Cornwall where they stopped for lunch on Thursday, October 2. “At my age, I didn’t think this was possible,” said Guillouzic who was diagnosed 25 years ago. “It’s a dream to travel the world and speak about MS. And if I didn’t have the disease I wouldn’t have been able to.” They are all members of L’odyssée de l’Espoir, a non-profit French organization created for a world tour project of the organizations fighting

against MS. “We’re very excited to welcome these cyclists,” said Karen Torrie-Racine, office manager of the MS Society of Canada Cornwall & District branch. The Seaway City marked 4,000 kilometres. To help keep their bikes in check before the team heads to their next stop in Toronto, Cornwall’s Kalrim Cycles dropped by the local branch to provide a free tune-up. “It’s a really common disease, but people dont’ know about it,” said team member Benoit Le quentrec. “We wanted to show that even if you have MS, you can still live to the fullest - just like Gérard is.” According to the MS Society’s national office, Canada has the highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world, with 100,000 individuals living with MS, and every day three more people are diagnosed. Massive fire takes aim at two east-end homes Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A massive fire burned in the city’s east end last Wednesday night, with witnesses saying a person had to be pulled from a dwelling caught in the blaze. Two homes at the corner of First Street East and Alice Street were destroyed amidst towering flames. Witnesses at the scene said no one was injured, which was later confirmed by the Cornwall Fire Department. Thick acrid smoke filled the neighbourhood and street corners were overflowing with onlookers, who witnessed chaos in the early going. “(My son) and I were walking up the street and smelled smoke, then I heard sirens in the distance,” said well-known local photographer Jason McNamara. “We ran down the street a bit and saw neighbours forcing a man out of one of

the homes that was on fire. “I heard them tell the police that he wouldn’t leave because he didn’t have his shoes. Thankfully, they got him out. Seconds later the flames were out of control.” Firefighters were battling an intense blaze that was finally extinguished at around 11 p.m. Foam was used to help quell the flames. So much was used that the thick substance was flowing down sidewalks and pooling in the street. Louise Leblanc, who lives in the neighbourhood, said the fire was intense. “It smells, there’s lots of smoke and the flames are very high,” she said. “The front part of the house fell in while I was there.” Motorists and pedestrians were encouraged to remain outside a one-block radius surrounding the First and Alice streets area. The Salvation Army was called in by the Cornwall Fire Department. The local charity A massive fire was burning at a house in east end Cornwall last Wednesday night. Cornwall Square shaping up after long wait

The first of two projects to update the parking garage and pedestrian bridges at the Cornwall Square is complete. On to the next one...Adam Brazeau

Chronic bronchitis, emphysema or smokers cough - also known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) - is a lung disease that gets worse over time. COPD is most often caused by cigarette smoking. Although there’s currently no cure for COPD, research is being conducted to find potential treatments to help prevent and control symptoms. A worldwide research study is now underway to test an investigational, triple therapy for COPD.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Patrons who shopped throughout the reconstruction of the mall’s high-level walkways can park a little easier now. Cornwall Square has issued an update to the repair and maintenance work underway on its parking garage. The first of two complex engineering projects, which replaced the pedestrian bridges connecting the mall parking garage to the shopping centre, was completed on September 30. Since April, access to the mall from Pitt Street was prohibited. Vehicles were only able to enter via the Sydney/Water Street intersection. Now, the roadway between the parking garage and the shopping centre has been reopened to two-way traffic. The second project, slated to begin midOctober, focuses on the ongoing maintenance and repair of the parking garage. “This project will have minimal impact on vehicular and pedestrian traffic,” said Karen Burns, Cornwall Square property manager in a

media statement. “A reputable national engineering firm has been retained for design services and review of construction activities associated with both projects. Our entire team is committed to the success of these projects.” To celebrate the completion of the pedestrian bridge replacement project and their 35th anniversary, Cornwall Square is giving away a dream kitchen valued at $8,500, which includes Sears Kenmore Elite fridge, stove, dishwasher, and, microwave and a $2,000 Emard Bros. Lumber gift certificate. For more information, visit www.cornwallsquare.com.

City, Akwesasne sign preliminary waterfront pact Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The city and Akwesasne are a step closer to finalizing an agreement on how to administer waterfront lands in Cornwall. City hall and the First Nation territory this week signed a memorandum of understanding related to the Port of Cornwall where a pair of controversial chemical tanks now sits. The parties want to assume ownership of the lands, via a federal government port divestiture program, and must now sign an official agreement on how to administer the property in the future. The memorandum sets out the principles of equal partnership, equal ownership, and

operation and management guidelines for the port lands. “The signing of this memorandum of understanding represents an historic step forward in the relationship between the communities of Cornwall and Akwesasne,” said Mayor bob Kilger, who along with Akwesasne Grand Chief Mike Mitchell completed the documents Monday. “This MOU is symbolic of our commitment to work together with Cornwall to find solutions to common issues through friendship and a mutual respect for the environment,” said Mitchell. “We are pleased to see the divestiture discussions take a positive step forward.” Negotiations between the city, Akwesasne, and Transport Canada are continuing. 5784893

Multicultural event celebrates city’s diversity ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Public Library hosted its second annual multicultural event - a celebration of the different ethnicities and customs that are a part of our colourful city. Over 45 members attended from the TR Leger Immigrant Services’ Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs on Thursday, September 25. Among the group was Bertha Puis Argote, a Cuba-born Ingleside resident who became a Canadian last year. She proudly showcased jewelry, sculptures, and various other artifacts from her hometown of Varadero. Argote has been studying English for only six months and has already established a foundation with the language. “I love it so much here - it’s beautiful,” said Argote. “The people are so friendly.” Booths lined the library’s hallway with representatives of 17 nationalities, including Egypt, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, and Pakistan. Homeopathy and TorTicollis

This summer, Grandpa was in the car for a few hours and when he arrived at his destination, his neck was sore. The air conditioning had been on and he never complained, but the cold draft must have bothered his neck. The pain and stiffness was worse when he stayed in the same position. He said he felt better when he moved his neck around and tried to stretch it back into place. He became very restless and fidgety and couldn’t sit still. We were concerned a small problem could easily get out of hand, at 89 years old. He was given Rhus Toxicodendron three times at 15-minute intervals and by the end of the afternoon, he was back to his old self again. After going for a walk he commented on how foolish we all were, to have made such a fuss when there was nothing wrong with him in the first place. Oh well, that’s Grandpa! Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease, so two people with the same problem may require different remedies. 5789423

outreach worker for TR Leger Immigrant Services, said the main goal of the event was to showcase the city’s different cultures so residents can learn more about them. Zeeshan and Pierre Dufour, the library’s communications and programs coordinator, are hoping that it lives longer than two years. “It’s very easy to find information on different cultures on the Internet, but it’s not the same thing as actually meeting the people themselves,” said Zeeshan. This year, the event expanded from its original multicultural fashion show format and featured various community agencies that offer services to newcomers. Jessica Wyatt, public educator and volunteer coordinator for Maison Baldwin House, said a lot of women who are newcomers to Canada use their services. The Cornwall women’s shelter stays in close contact with TR Leger to ensure its clients Cornwall, a city with a world of possibilities. LABOUR PAINS: Candidates miffed with local council Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Word on the street is plenty of local candidates running for office here in Fun City are miffed with the Cornwall and District Labour Council. The reason? Every election the labour council chooses to endorse a slate of candidates, with this campaign being no different. The labour council sends out a bunch of questions to candidates, and based on the answers to those questions they throw their support behind a handful of people, and urge their members to vote for specific individuals. The problem is that the answers had to be submitted in early September – days before the deadline for individuals to file their nomination papers. The result is that some candidates were not afforded the same opportunity as others in answering the questions, and potentially garnering the support of the labour council and its thousands of members. To be fair, an endorsement from the labour council isn’t exactly a blessing from King Solomon that results in an automatic seat at the table – but any support is good support this time of year. So I get it when candidates call my office, angry that a local agency isn’t playing fair. I spoke with Louise Lanctot, the local labour council’s political action chair, who agreed there’s “an issue” with getting the questions into the hands of all the candidates. She stopped short of calling it a mistake, but did offer an explanation as to what happened. The questions and information circulated

among candidates is printed, in Toronto, and comes under the auspices of the Canadian Labour Congress. Copies of the packets are circulated throughout the province during a municipal election, and the powers that be wanted to ensure the questions could be printed with enough time to ensure answers were collected and disseminated to make an informed decision about who to support. Timing, it seems, was the driving factor… and many who didn’t get the questions are screaming that fairness went out the window because some last-minute candidates were left out in the cold. “It was a problem all across the province,” Lanctot said. A simple solution, it would seem, would be to print the items locally, instead of at a central hub in Toronto, to be fairer to all candidates and Lanctot said it was discussed…this past Monday, at a meeting in the Big Smoke – too late to make an impact this time around. The local labour council took it on the chin, a little bit, during the first half of this campaign. Councillor candidate Mark MacDonald called out Lanctot and the labour council over some perceived shortcomings, and pointed out that he felt marginalized in the last municipal election when the labour group endorsed Bob Kilger over him for mayor. This week rumours exploded that the labour council had endorsed three women running for council, one of whom is labour council president Elaine MacDonald. MacDonald will be endorsed, there’ll only be news if she’s not. How could the labour council not endorse its own president, who has

been a driving force behind the labour movement in Cornwall for years. Lanctot told me that the labour council won’t be announcing its favourite sons (or daughters if the rumours are true) until later this week, after its Wednesday candidates night at the Royal Canadian Legion. Perhaps the labour council wants to hear from all candidates, giving everyone a chance to speak in spite of many missing the boat on those pesky questions, before making up its mind? Maybe…hopefully. My gut tells me the decision on who to endorse has already been made. Fact is, I think there’s been a mistake. Every candidate should have received those questions from the labour council. I can’t see how a few days would have made a difference. Was there any malice behind the move? I doubt it… why would a group go out of its way to marginalize so many last-minute candidates from across Ontario? The thinking, I assume, had a lot to do with

know what I'm talking about, the guy/gal who genuinely cares about the constituent, or, the self-absorbed/egotist/entrepreneur who is...... self-indulgent and/or networking? Simple. Look at their history. Say a guy/gal has spent the last 30 years, firefighting,

fending for the poor, disabled, elderly, or a her own business interests first and foremost. Before you cast that vote, try to do your due member of the community in general, then, s/ he probably has the community's best interest diligence and know who/what you're voting at heart. I would be suspicious of a candidate for. Mike Kilgallen without a previous involvement in social Newington betterment. Especially, one who may have his/

the arrogance of a decision based in Toronto (you know, the centre of the universe) and a belief that if one hasn’t made up their mind to run for office by early September then perhaps they aren’t worth the trouble. Does a labour council bigwig in Hogtown really care that a guy on the political fence in say Cornwall, North Bay or Timmins has taken until Sept. 12 (the deadline for nomination papers) to make up their mind? Nope…but they should. I visited city hall at five minutes to deadline on the 12th and there was actually someone in the city clerk’s office filling out his paperwork. It’s the right of individuals to take as much time as they want. Many candidates, some of whom are a slam dunk to win, or had personal issues going on, did not file until the last few days leading up to the deadline. I’m sure the same pattern was repeated in countless other communities across the province. Labour councils need to consider that in 2018 when we do this again.

Fluoride is a benefit to Cornwall Dear editor: Cornwall City Council is again considering the fluoridation of our water, after accepting the strong recommendation of the local Medical Officer of Health to continue to do so. This time the issue is cost, and safety at the filtration plant. I understand the cost of fluoridating water, per person for a whole lifetime, is less than the cost of a single, simple filling. How effective is it? I grew up without fluoridated water. My high school years, in the early sixties, meant about two fillings every six months. My children grew up with Cornwall’s fluoridated water, and hardly know what a cavity is. I was lucky to have good dental care; many other didn’t. I remember so many in high school

showing large cavities when they smiled - losing their teeth in Grade 12. Fluoridated water hardens teeth and reduces cavities; this was first noticed where fluoride is present naturally in the water. Adding it artificially is an excellent, cost-effective Public Heath decision, much like mandatory vaccinations. The main benefit of fluoridating water is to those least able to help themselves: children, with developing teeth. This benefit means most to a family that is poor, with no dental plan. Can fluoride be poisonous? Yes, but not as poisonous as chlorine. Who wants to stop adding chlorine to our water? Stephen B. Renner, Cornwall

OPINION

Fluoride debates gets sucked into election talk Ed Allard I wonder at the wisdom of having council meetings during an election campaign. This only occurs at the municipal level, but even there it’s not in all municipalities. It can be argued that publicized meetings give incumbents extra free opportunities for getting their messages across. Of course the risk is that some of the wrong messages can get out too. For example, the last council meeting involved a discussion on fluoridation, which caught some councillors outside their comfort zone and looking rather less than objective. A staff report on a safety hazard at the water plant recommended some essential and costly upgrades to the fluoride system for our water supply, but also hinted that doing away with fluoride might be the better option. This was not some

anti-fluoride interest group; it was their own professional staff. Debate began with an immediate call for a deferral until Dr. Roumeliotis could come and convince them yet again of the importance of fluoride in the water. In fact, some councillors had already been talking to him in anticipation. There was very little focus on the employee safety issue. They sort of agreed that someone should be found to present an alternative view. But nobody knew who or what that might be. It left an impression that it would be just a formality anyway; the doctor’s input is really the only one that matters. You can already see how this is going to end. It should really be set aside until the new council is in place with a fresh mandate. Personally, I’m OK with fluoride in the water. But, once the employee safety aspect is settled, I think fluoridation really should have some public

input. Not the usual type of public input: one or two public meetings at the Civic Complex, attended by a hundred or so of the regulars who normally attend those things. I’m thinking referendum or some similar mechanism where the other 30,000 of us can make our preference known. Our opinion matters because it affects every one of us who drinks city water. Of course, a referendum cannot happen now until 2018. On another topic, I agree somewhat with a recent call for more polling stations. Toronto has one polling station for every 960 voters. A similar ratio here would mean some 32 stations. Instead, we’ll have only 10 and another 16 limited to seniors’ homes and the like. Of course, it takes much less time and effort to get around Cornwall than Toronto, so 32 may be unrealistic but if you don’t have a car, the difficulties can seem quite similar. I

think the city is making an effort to target highdensity areas, but some parts of town could be better served. I am less concerned about seniors getting out to vote – they are one cohort that does so, consistently. Then again, for many, the polling station comes to them. The focus needs to be on what inhibits younger people from exercising their vote. I think the time for Internet polling has come and should be seriously looked at for the future. One final note. We seem to have public election debates set up for arts issues, for labour union issues and for business community issues. Each of them could well touch on some of the things that concern the general population. But there is no debate that is specifically focussed on residential concerns. Yet residents are the only ones who can vote and they form the largest block of taxpayers. And that’s the way I see it.

seek a fourth successive mandate from Canadians. He has made it clear he plans to drop bombshells which could prove damaging to his old party. My guess is Harper will probably ignore Canada’s fixed date election and call a snap election following the presentation of the new budget. Prime Minister Harper could possibly face a credibility issue if he pulls the plug on the current Parliament. But, he should have no problems coming up with a variety of excuses for calling an early election. He has done this once before. Harper circumvented the last fixed date election when he asked the Governor-General to dissolve a “dysfunctional” House of Commons.

This was just one a year after fixed election date were introduced in 2007. In the meantime, the Liberals, under the charismatic Justin Trudeau, are rapidly gaining new members, new supporters and new ground. The New Democratic Party will not do well in the next election despite what Thomas Mulcair is saying. Mulcair has and continues to perform well during Question period in the House of Commons. The New Democrats did extremely well in vote rich Quebec the last time around. But, there is a big difference between Mulcair and his predecessor. There is no doubt all the three major parties are gearing up for an early election next spring.

All indications are the next federal election campaign will be very long and nasty. Although Prime Minister Stephen Harper has until Oct. 19, 2015, to keep his job, it seems the ruling Conservatives may send Canadians to the polls well before the scheduled date. There are a number of reasons for this. The Harper government will present an appealing budget, which will contain a lot of goodies and tax cuts, next spring. The Conservatives and the Liberals have already selected candidates for many of the ridings for the enlarged parliament. The thing bothering the

Harper government most is the trial of Senator Mike Duffy trial. This is scheduled for next April and could go on for a couple of weeks. Duffy is facing 31 charges including fraud, breach of trust and bribery. This trial is likely to generate a lot of negative publicity which the Tories will like to avoid. If Duffy goes down, he will try to do as much damage to the Tories as he can. The trial of another disgraced Tory Senator Patrick Brazeau is also pending. And let us not forget that the matter of another Tory Senator Pamela Wallin has not been resolved. The Duffy trial has been haunting and will continue to haunt the Tories for a while. Duffy is not going to keep quiet while the Tories

NEWS City clerk defends polling strategy, and number of locations

5812117

- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario - A former Cornwall mayor believes there are too few places to vote in the city, and he worries it could limit turnout on election day. Brian Lynch, who was mayor in the late 1980s, said “the small number of voting stations” in Cornwall, 10 scattered throughout the city, is not enough compared to 21 that were established during the June provincial election. “People are more inclined to vote if their polling station is located within walking distance of their home,” he said. “ Many seniors, disabled persons, and people without cars may not get out to vote if their polling station is far from their home.” Lynch is calling for more voting locations in time

for the Oct. 27 election. “In the interest of greater democracy in our municipal elections, the City of Cornwall should rectify this unfortunate situation,” he said. “We should be doing everything possible to encourage everyone to exercise their democratic right to vote. Having fewer voting locations discourages and prevents some of our residents from voting.” City clerk Helen Finn defended the city’s polling strategy, and pointed out there are, in fact, a lot more than the 10 locations that are getting most of the spotlight. She said in addition eight institutions and retirement homes are available for people to cast a ballott, as well as eight other so-called “large complexes.” She said the facilities include Riverdale Terrace

and McConnell Manor, to name just a couple. “Anyone can vote anywhere,” she stressed. “It’s not like the 1980s, where you had to go to a (specific place).” Finn also pointed out there are advanced polling dates (Benson Centre, Cornwall Square and Eastcourt Mall on Thursday, October 9, Friday, October 10, and Saturday, October 11) as well as dates set aside to vote early at city hall. Voters can cast ballots Oct. 14 to 17 and 20 and 21 at city hall. The 10 other voting locations in Cornwall on election day, include Viscount Alexander School, city hall, Eastcourt Mall, La Citadelle Secondary School, the Benson Centre, Cornwall Square, L’Heritage Secondary School, General Vanier School, Eamer’s Corners Public School and Rose des Vents

School. The city has had some issues with the voter cards that have been mailed out to eligible - and some noneligible - people in Cornwall. Recently the 15-year-old daughter of council candidate Greg Kielec received a voter card. She cannot cast a ballot until she is 18. Others have reached out to Seaway News and suggested they have received voter cards for family members who no longer live in the city. City hall gets its voter information from the Municipal Property Assessment Corproration, which uses census data and property title information when it compiles its list. The city refines the list before sending out voter cards. More revisions then take place to mitigate further errors. Individuals need to produce ID, in addition to the voter card, before casting a ballot.

Attic maintenance: Put a hat on your home (NC)—Just as people lose most of their heat through their heads, houses lose most of their heat through the attic space. Now that fall is here and winter is looming, it’s time to make sure your attic keeps in as much heat as possible. Half of typical home heat is lost due to poorly insulated walls, floors and attics. Adding insulation is cost-effective, won’t take very long, and could save you 15 per cent on your heating bills, or roughly $200 per year. Nearly 25 per cent of your home’s heat could be leaving via the attic

alone; it’s worth concentrating on this problem area. Here are a few tips for taking care of your attic: •The thicker the insulation, (a depth of 10 inches is recommended) the less heat you will lose. Common drafts can waste up to 30 per cent of your energy use each year. • Caulk any holes or drafty spots in your attic to prevent heat from escaping. • Watch for ice dams (ice collecting at the lip of your roof or gutters), they can cause melting

snow or rain to back up and find its way under your roofing and into your home. • Air seal the attic floor. The extra insulation prevents ice dam formation and helps stop heat loss through your roof. • Make sure there are no animals nesting in your attic. Squirrels, racoons and bats are known for finding small holes into your attic and often burrow away through insulation. This damages your weather proof barrier and enables water to get in. If you’re unsure about checking your attic yourself, hire in a specialist.

• Fertilizing promotes vigorous growth the following spring. If chemical fertilizers are prohibited in your local community, ask your garden centre to recommend a natural alternative such as compost or another kind of fertilizer. Also, clippings left on the lawn are rich in nitrogen and provide free and easy fertilization. Make sure you spread fertilizers evenly and thinly to avoid clumps that can cause snow mould. Although Health Canada has registered many pesticides for use in Canada, some provinces and municipalities have placed additional restrictions on pesticide use on public and private property. A great source of information for more healthy lawn tips is the consumer product safety section of the Health Canada website at www.hc-sc.gc.ca.

(NC)—Preparing your lawn and garden for a Canadian winter can be a tricky business even for the most experienced gardener. Follow these three tips early this fall and watch the fruits of your labour blossom after a long, cold winter: • Top-dress your lawn with a thin layer of compost or good garden soil, and add grass seed appropriate to your lawn condition and local growing area. This will help to regenerate your lawn and take care of any thinned-out areas. Mix the compost into the existing soil before seeding or laying sod, or spread it in a thin layer raked over the existing lawn. • Overseeding, or regularly spreading grass seed on your lawn, will ensure that it remains dense. Keep the new seed well watered until the new grass is established.

(NC)—It’s once again time to prepare your home for winter and the most important task is ensuring your heating system is ready. For some, it may be time to invest in a new furnace, for others, your furnace may just need a little TLC. The rule of thumb is any furnace older than 15 years should be replaced with a newer, more efficient model that has a good Energy Star rating. This replacement could save you $450 per year in energy bills. If a new heating system isn’t in the budget, here are a few tips to save money on your energy bills: • Thermostat: for every degree you turn it down, you could be saving five percent of your heating costs. • Hot Water: turn down the temperature just one or two degrees and you could save 11 percent of your water heating costs. • Program it: turn the temperature down when you’re not home, it could save you up to 20 percent on your heating bill. • Air filters: clean them regularly to remove any fire hazards, prevent allergen build-up and allow your furnace to work at optimum capacity. • Cables and Wires: check all of your furnaces electrical connections for damage and wear. • Oil and gas: check all of your oil or gas connections, gas pressure, burner combustion and heat exchange—this will ensure there is no fire hazard and you’ll know your furnace is burning fuel as efficiently as possible. If you’re unsure about checking your furnace yourself, hire in a specialist.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Autumn: time for a good clean-up! filter. After cleaning the pool thoroughly, pour in the products included in the pool-closing kit and store pool accessories in a dry place. Do a good clean-up of your garage or your shed. Store the pool accessories, garden furniture, bicycles, the lawnmower, gardening tools and the barbecue at the back. Then find a handy place for the snow blower, the shovels and winter sports equipment, etc. Before being put away for the winter, some items such as the garden furniture and the

as a musty smell, condensation on windows, white powdery stains on concrete floors and discolouration on walls, ceilings or floors. • Use proper ventilation, such as a fan hood vented to the outdoors, when cooking with a gas range or oven. • Keep vents and registers clear of dust and debris. From outside your home • Use weather-stripping and caulking to seal gaps and cracks in and outside the house to prevent outdoor pollutants from coming in. • Consider investing in an insulation/air barrier system which can minimize the flow of outdoor pollutants and allergens into the home. The moisture management provided by this type of insulation can also help provide your house with protection against moisture that can lead to other indoor air quality issues.

(NC)—As we prepare to spend more time in the great indoors, it’s a good time to take some proactive steps to improve the environment (i.e. quality of air) inside our homes, especially if someone in the family suffers from asthma or allergies. Sources of indoor air quality problems can come from inside or outside your home. Here are some steps to help address both areas: From inside your home • Limit sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are found in common household products such as paints. When painting inside, open windows, turn on fans and make sure there is continuous airflow to the outside. • Control indoor moisture, which can lead to mold problems. Limit the use of humidifiers and set up a dehumidifier in damp areas inside the home. • Look out for signs of moisture problems, such

Autumn is as good a time as spring to do a clean-up around the house. It’s for this reason that October was designated Autumn Inspection Month. Some of the necessary jobs can be done easily while others need the expertise of specialists. First of all, the job of closing the pool has to be tackled. Aquarius, the physical rewards for all your hard work will become apparent soon. You’ll find that all of your efforts thus far have been well worth the sacrifices. Working together for the youth of S. D. & G. CORNWALL, Ontario – Talk about trying to tell the players without a program. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall and District (BBBS), as well as their friends at the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall (BGC), are often miscast when it comes to the good work they do on behalf of young people and their families in the Seaway City. Heck, even their acronyms are kind of similar. It’s an honest mistake, to be sure. Two community-based agencies, helmed by some truly fantastic people that are backed up by an army of volunteers (Boys and Girls club is not a volunteer program. They have paid staff) who want to make Cornwall a better place for children – it’s not difficult to get them confused.

Amanda Brisson

Littles matched through BBBS can often be found enjoying the programming offered by BGC. It speaks to the quality of the work both agencies do, while also expressing a need to maintain and in some cases augment their services. BBBS, as an example, does not receive government funding and relies almost exclusively on donations and fundraising to accomplish its goals. Likewise at BGC, which sees 57 per cent of its revenue collected via donations. Both BBBS and BGC are United Way member agencies, and rely heavily on the good work done by that charity to meet the requirements of their clientele. “Cornwall and the surrounding area is such a giving

Who We Are - What We Do Programs for Kids (6 – 12) After School Program – This program is offered at 7 locations in Cornwall and is free to Members of the Club. Full Day Programs – This includes PD Day programs, Winter Break, March Break and Summer Camp. ReadE for Summer – This free 2-week summer camp is offered in partnership with Upper Canada District School Board with a focus on improving retention, building literacy skills and having fun. Programs for Teens (12 – 18) Drop-In – This is offered at both the Henry St and 506 Clubhouses. Activities include tabletop tournaments, cooking meals, video games and other fun activities chosen by the Members.

Both Amanda Brisson, executive director of BBBS, and Jacquie Richards, her counterpart at BGC, laugh when they discuss the similarities, and important differences, that are innocently confused from time to time. “Sometimes people come to my office, looking to pick up their children,” Brisson said with a laugh, referring to the colourful BBBS main office on Third Street West in Cornwall. The thing is, those children are likely found across town, enjoying the daily activities at BGC, which is located on First Street East. “We’ve also had people make similar mistakes,” agreed Richards.“But when you have two organizations, as closely linked as we are, it’s easy to make that mistake.” BBBS and BGC have a rich history in Cornwall. Both offer programming that helps young people learn life skills, while also enjoying activities that offer a chance to grow and learn among their peers. But there are key differences.

Over at the interactive offices of BGC, area children aged six to 18 can enjoy a myriad of fun activities with other young people. After-school programs are offered, PD Day activities and education programming for teens are part of the regular regimen. Things are different, but equally rewarding, at BBBS, which offers a mentoring program that pairs young people with adults. And unlike BGC, the lion’s share of the activities offered by way of a BBBS mentoring partnership take place off-site, almost always at venues and attractions that ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’ choose to attend. BBBS partnerships, while beginning at age 6, can last well into adulthood because of the relationships between Big and Littles. “We are two groups that have the best interests of children at heart,” said Richards. “We’re just coming at it from a pair of angles that happen to be slightly different.” Brisson agreed, suggesting the relationship between the two groups is steadfast. “We’re not only colleagues who have the same goal, but we’re also all friends,” she said. “The children that are helped by our agencies really get to enjoy the best of both worlds.” No kidding.

The next step for both agencies is to build on the success they have already achieved – working together to help children, while also staying on course with their individual mandates. “Both agencies are so important, we know people realize we are important pillars of the community,” said Richards. Brisson wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s nice to know that this isn’t a competition. We all love our kids, and want nothing more than to see them happy, and succeed,” she said.

SLIDESHOW: Bridge demo work shows early progress CORNWALL, Ontario - The demolition of the Seaway International Bridge is in full swing, with a large sectioning of the decking already removed. Passersby and motorists who look up near the corner of Brookdale Avenue and Water Street can now see daylight for the first time in decades. Demolition crews began mobilizing this weeks ago to start the 18-month task of bringing down the Seaway International Bridge, which runs above and beside Brookdale Avenue. Crews began by removing the decking of the bridge, which will be followed by its steel

apparatus, and finally the concrete pillars, in time for a 2016 deadline. Parts of Brookdale will remain open during the work, perhaps one lane in each direction, and on occasions intersections like the one that crosses Second Street West may have to be completely shuttered for a short period of time. Demo crews will remove decking in large chunks that can be easily managed by a crane and set down on the back of flatbed trucks that will carry it away. RELIGION & OBITUARIES

Religious pitfalls pastor's perspective Pastor john scorgie Whether a person is religious or not doesn’t ultimately matter to God. Now that may surprise some of you. The truth doesn’t change because someone has a particularly religious perspective on life. The truth doesn’t change because someone claims, “I’m an atheist” or “I’m a secular humanist”. The things that are genuinely spiritual, divine and eternal don’t go through seasons of change. I wish now to address those who would consider themselves having a religious bent. My words are actually words of caution not commendation. So here goes. Be careful that you don’t become totally preoccupied with mere external religious activities. And finally, be careful that you are not interested in merely acquiring more and more information on religious beliefs, traditions, history, and practices. God sees right through that as well! These are just some of the occupational hazards of being religious – having the appearance of being religious with the real possibility of totally lacking the spiritual authenticity of knowing, loving, worshipping, serving and following the living Lord! So please, if you think you’re the religious type, watch out for these three pitfalls! They are perilous indeed!

New details emerge in high-profile fraud case CORNWALL, Ontario - A local financial planner who also helmed a community-advocacy group will appear in court again later this month. Gilles Latour, former chair of Team Cornwall, made an appearance in Cornwall court this week, where specifics of the police charges he is facing became clearer. Latour is accused of defrauding one individual of $36,000 by not directing the funds as he was instructed, according to documents filed at the Cornwall Courthouse.

Man charged after Cadillac lands in St. Lawrence River

He is also alleged to have committed a breach of trust by converting $165,000 for a use that was unauthorized by another individual looking to invest the money. The alleged actions translated into police charges that include fraud over $5,000, theft by conversion, false pretenses and breach of trust, police said in August. None of the allegations against Latour have been proven in court. He is scheduled to appear again in court Oct. 28.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Provincial police have laid charges against the 21-year-old South Dundas man who ditched his 2005 Cadillac in the St. Lawrence River after crashing it into a guardrail and a private dock on Lakeshore Drive in Morrisburg shortly before 11 p.m. on September 10. SDG OPP identified the driver as Nathan Tibben on September 11.

He was charged with failing to remain at scene of an accident, fail to report accident, careless driving, and having care or control of a motor vehicle with an open container of alcohol. The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall on November 18 to face Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and Liquor Licence Act (LLA) charges.

ENTERTAINMENT & RESTAURANTS

Coming back from holidays with new music Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - I spent some time in the Maritimes, recently, where I got a more-than generous helping of east coast hospitality, a taste of their passion for music, and an earful of its talented musicians. They are everywhere, waiting tables, working in offices, and digging ditches, all to support their insatiable appetite to strap on a guitar and play their songs, no different from any of us, here in town, schlepping our tunes, for a buck. While I was out there, I got invited to jam at a bona fide, east coast kitchen party. Good for the soul. Happy Birthday, Steve! See you all next year. I always love coming back from holiday with new music, in tow. I heard a number of great musicians; might I recommend you check out Brooke Miller at https://www.facebook.com/ brookie.miller; Mitch Schurman at www.facebook.com/TheMitchSchurmanBand; and Nudie at www.nudiemusic.com, just to name a few. SLC Sharks finish fourth at provincial championship

5779492

CORNWALL, Ontario - Twelve shots make a world of difference on the green. The St. Lawrence College (SLC) Cornwall Sharks golf team took fourth place in Division 2 of the Team Championship at the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) provincial championships. After 54 holes over three days (Sept. 29-Oct. 1) against 16 other varsity teams, the SLC Sharks fought for bronze against the Sault College Cougars in the final round.

The Sharks finished mere strokes away from the Cougars, with a final score of 1020 to 1008. “It was not from a lack of effort,” said Sharks head coach Sean Boulerice. “These guys cared and kept their eyes on the leaderboard until the Sault scores were all posted.” Jordan Rochon finished the tournament as the top SLC-Cornwall golfer and clinched the top 20 to place 17th overall, shooting +7 (79) on the final day. The day belonged to Danny Deneault who shot an impressive +5 (77) in his final round to finish 53rd. Through all three rounds at the championships, Deneault dramatically improved his scores, going 94-84-77. Starting on the back nine, Andrew Johnson got off to a rocky start going +13, but relaxed and recorded one birdie and par on the front nine, going +7. Johnson finished the tournament in a tie for 57th overall. The same was also true for Jody Mclennan, who had a tough start but finished the last nine holes with a score in the low 40s, good for a 61st place finish.

Cumberland was paced by Pancel, who tallied one goal. Pancel scored 1:29 into overtime to make the score 3-2 Cumberland. Matthew Morin picked up the assist. The Grads kept Cornwall’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Denny Dubblestyne made 28 saves on 31 shots. Others who scored for Cumberland included Brandon Zullo and Riley Hennigar, who each put in one. In addition, Cumberland received assists from

- Cornwall Expess - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

15 (annexe B).

CANADIAN COMEDY: Edwards looking forward to interacting with Cornwall audience TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario- Derek Edwards has been a staple of the Canadian comedy scene for years, feeding off all things Maple Leaf and poutine through much of that time. The comic will be performing Oct. 16 in Cornwall, part of a stop on his Baloney and Wine comedy tour, which will feature his

baloney. “Because really, I don’t come that close to being thought-provoking.” Edwards was born in Timmins, Ont. and has taken his experiences in a remote part of the province and woven them into a comedy career that speak to audiences through its simplicity. “I like the small town feel,” he said of playing venues like Aultsville Theatre in Cornwall. “Once in a while I will offer something up to the audi-

ence and try to get in there with them. “I’m not just pushing play in my head.” Edwards has made a number of appearances at Just for Laughs in Montreal, and his lanky persona is easily recognizable through his multiple television appearances. Edwards 90-minute show begins at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Ticket information can be found at www.aultsvilletheatre.com/english/events/ derek-edwards-baloney-wine.htm.

Thanksgiving: let me count the ways NICK WOLOCHATIUK

lived in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Gaza or any of the war-torn and terrorist-plagued countries near the Mediterranean, we might be desperately trying to make land in Italy or Greece. If we made it that far, we’d be trying to make it to England. Then there are the economic refugees from Central America who are trying to evade the US Border Patrol in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. On Thanksgiving Day, we have friends and family at our door – not ISIS or Ebola! We have so much to be thankful for here in area code 613, Eastern Ontario: none of California’s threats of brush fires, landslides, smog or earthquakes; none of Detroit’s bankruptcy; none of the hurricane season of the East Coast; none of the despair and mismanagement of many of Canada’s Indian reserves. Japan’s active volcanoes are far away. We suffer from none of that. We even have more to be thankful for than the province that borders us to the east. Our fuel prices are not as high; our construction projects are contracted with less graft and the THE WILD ONES – Unlike their domestic relatives, these turkeys don’t tremble at the concrete used lasts longer; our provincial taxes thought of Thanksgiving Day. Canadian Thanksgiving Day is quite unlike any other special day. Unlike Easter, it has no chocolate bunnies, eggs or dinosaurs. Unlike Christmas, it has no gratuitous orgy of gift exchanges. Unlike Mother’s Day, we aren’t goaded into sending flowers. Unlike Valentine’s Day, we don’t have to prove our love. Thanksgiving is not a one-day event. It’s a 365 day of the year celebration of gratitude. Our Thanksgiving Monday observance is quite unlike the Thursday one south of the 49th parallel. (To be closer to being correct, I’d have to add, “…and south of where the international border we share with the 48 contiguous states meanders through Lake Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario, plus a lot of other negotiated border jiggles. Oh yes, mustn’t forget Alaska, which is north of the majority of Canadians, and Hawaii, which is way west of Moose Creek and Saskatoon.) This year our American neighbours are carving their gobblers on November 27. We celebrate our Thanksgiving when our trees are a riot of colour, when our weather provides a 50-50 chance of dining on the deck and we don’t have to run the risk of icy roads to get to the ‘Black Friday’ shopping excess that is the dominant feature of Thanksgiving USA. We have so much to be thankful for. If we

Pet Tip of the Week: People food is dangerous for your pet. Rich foods can upset their delicate stomachs and poultry bones can splinter and cause serious illness. The best thing to feed your pet is a specially formulated cat or dog food. Your veterinarian can help you select the one best suited for your companion animal. So this Thanksgiving, make sure to keep the turkey and trimmings out of Fido’s reach.

What a sweet sentiment. Kudos to Dairy Queen in Cornwall for keeping the community updated on different charity campaigns and events that need support with their outdoor sign.

The Alison Wonderland Band rocked La Maison to raise money for Hospice Cornwall on Sept. 27. Good luck to their lovely lead singer as she starts her new gig with the hospice as volunteer coordinator. Looking to join a choir? Come sing with Christ Church Seaway in Long Sault. They could use some more basses...and tenors...and altos... and sopranos. They rehearse Thursday nights at 7 p.m. and sing on Sundays at 10 a.m.

Seaway Family Dental is hosting a food drive for Thanksgiving. The drive will run up to Oct. 10 and will collect much-needed food to re-stock the Agape Centre’s food bank in time for Thanksgiving. Donations will be accepted between 8 AM and 5 PM (Mon-Fri). All donations will be given to the Agape centre food bank. For every donation, people get to enter our draw to win an Oral-B Electric Toothbrush (values at $175.00). The office is located at 1080 Montreal Road, Cornwall. It’s time to start thinking about car care for the winter season coming up. Check your car manual and switch to the lowest recommended winter oil grade for your model. Synthetic motor oil (though more expensive) can be used year round and resists cold-temperature sludge.

A police officer pulls over a driver and informs him that he has just won $5,000 in a safety competition, all because he is wearing his seat belt. “What are you going to do with the prize money?” the officer asks. The man responds, “I guess I’ll go to driving school and get my license.” His wife says,“Officer, don’t listen to him. He’s a smart aleck when he’s drunk.” The guy in the back seat pops up out from under the blanket and says, “I knew we wouldn’t get far in this stolen car.” Just then a knock comes from the trunk and a voice calls out, “Are we over the border yet?”
