IN & AROUND Cornwall and the Counties $4M drug bust

Police have nabbed six people and a large supply of marijuana in a drug bust believed to be linked to Mexico. Ontario Provincial Police executed search warrants at properties on Concession Road 7 and Cuthbert Road in South Glengarry on Aug. 27. The street value of the drugs seized is estimated at over $4 million. A total of 3775 mature marijuana plants, 186 pounds of marijuana bud, 237 pounds of marijuana shake and 75 pounds of a mixture to produce marijuana resin were all found in the series of raids.

City hires arborist

The City of Cornwall’s Parks and Landscaping Section has a new face on board to help combat the emerald ash borer. Scott Porter recently joined the city as the new Municipal Arborist Supervisor. In this position, Porter will be charged with implementing the City’s Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan as well as overseeing the city’s entire tree inventory. Porter worked with the City of Brantford in a similar position before making the move to Cornwall.

MacDonald won’t attend debate

‘Sonny’ Herrington passes away

A candidate for city council won’t be attending an October debate, and has taken a shot at the group organizing the event. Former city councillor Mark MacDonald said in an interview the Cornwall and District Labour Council is making a mistake by asking candidates to show up at a debate, after it has decided which individuals it will support in the looming municipal election. “We need to find issues that unite us, not divide us,” MacDonald said. “They’re too divisive.”

A Cornwall man whose volunteerism stretched from putting the city’s lacrosse heritage on the map, to also creating a home for navy veterans, has passed away. Richard ‘Sonny’ Herrington was 90 and died Sunday surrounded by family and friends at a Cornwall retirement home. “His community work…he did so much,” said his son Allan, responding to his fondest memory of his father. “He was always in there doing what he could.”

Chip stand owner dishes on his side of the story Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The deep fryers have gone cold. The doors have been closed by regional health authorities. And Serge Geneau, the 64-year-old owner of Grampa Bill’s, is speaking out. Geneau operated the chip stand at its Eleventh Street East location in Cornwall for 15 years. He was in the french fry business for over half a century until the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) shut down Grampa Bill’s on Aug. 20 for the second time, following multiple complaints, violations and

fines, over the last two years. “It’s definitely somebody who has a vendetta against me,” said Geneau. “They didn’t even look, they didn’t even check, they just gave me the letter and said you’re closed. And that’s what got me going.” In a recent interview with Seaway News, Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, EOHU chief executive officer, said the premise presented a health hazard due to the inability to maintain proper sanitary conditions. Geneau disagrees. “It’s not right the way the health unit went about it. They wanted the walls, floors, and ceiling, clean, as well as the screens and the outside steps, which I did,” he said. “Let’s face

it, we work in grease. I don’t care which place it is, you can’t keep it spotless. I even had a part-time worker clean the cupboards every night. In the last two weeks, we really kept the place in tip-top shape.” He’s adamant that all the requests made by health unit were followed. “I knew they were coming to inspect me last Wednesday. I was ready for them. To be honest, I was proud of myself because I had done more than what they asked,” said Geneau. He went into further detail alluding that it was a neighbour who kept calling city councillors and the health unit to have him shut down.

“I had trouble with them two years ago when they were there, then they moved away and I had no complaints at all,” said Geneau. “They move back and ‘bang’ I get all the complaints again.” He has the option to re-open if he cleans up his act, to the health unit’s satisfaction. But not a moment sooner. “I was thinking of re-opening, but after all of this, I’m not. It’s sad that it finished this way. At this point it’s not worth it for me anymore,” said Geneau. “I fed customers when they had no money, but people seem to forget that. I sweat my guts out for 55 years, it’s enough.” The chip stand is currently for sale on Kijiji.

CHILDREN’S CHARTER:

New list of rights unveiled by Rachel’s Kids Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A local children’s advocacy group has unveiled a list of rights it says all young people should be afforded. Rachel’s Kids has unveiled a Children’s Charter of Rights that city council is expected to ratify at an upcoming meeting. The charter includes a series of rights Rachel’s Kids officials say every child should enjoy, including the right to play, be safe, be heard and an education. “There are larger municipalities in Ontario that have done this,” said Gillian Oxley-Harper, vice-chair of the Rachel’s Kids board. “When you look at this community and the agencies who help children...we thought that children should have a list of rights.” City council will hear from Rachel’s Kids representatives at its Sept. 8 meeting during a presentation. Oxley-Harper said the ultimate goal is to have the charter ratified by council and displayed at city hall.

Rachel’s Kids has reached out to local agencies like Big Brothers/Sisters and the Children’s Aid Society, as well as area schools, to encourage young people to create illustrations that represent each of the rights on the charter. Oxley-Harper said the illustrations are expected to be incorporated with the charter in its city hall display.

RACHEL’S KIDS CHARTER OF CHILDREN’S RIGHTS:

- The right to basic needs: Every child has the right to love and be loved, healthy food, clothes for all seasons, a safe home, clean air, water and earth. - The right to be heard: Every child has the right to his/her emotions and to share these feelings respectfully. To be heard and to listen to others. - The right to a nurturing home: Every child has the right to feel safe and loved in his/her home and to spend time with family and friends. - The right to an education: Every child has a right to learning and training - to be the best that

he or she can be. - The right to justice and protection: Every child has the right to be safe and respected at all times and in all places, at home, school, on the internet and in public. - The right to make friends: Every child has a right to love, peace, and happiness. - The right to culture, faith and beliefs: Every child has the right to be treated equally. To learn and practice his/her faith and culture without fear. - The right to peace: Every child has a right to love, peace and happiness. - The right to be different: Every child has the right to be himself or herself and to treat others as he or she would like to be treated. - The right to privacy: Every child has the right to privacy when thinking, changing clothes and learning. - The right to play: Every child has the right to play, explore, express and dream. The right to equal access: Every child has the right to access health care, public places and opportunities to a good life.

THIS CARR RUNS: Councillor adds his name to growing list of candidates Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - With just days to go before the deadline for municipal election candidates to sign up to run, more names have been added to the mix. Denis Carr, the elder statesman around the council table with 23 years of experience as a councillor, announced Tuesday he will be running again this fall. “Over the past four years we have tabled budgets that were always below inflation while lowering the tax rate by 10.7 per cent,” he said. “It is my intention to continue working with both (Business Improvements Areas) on revitalization and new construction in our downtown areas.” Also new to the list is Heather Megill, just the third female candidate to sign on, though Coun. Elaine MacDonald has indicated she will run again. Coun. Bernadette Clement has not commented publicly on her intentions. The full list of city council candidates, as well as their contact info, can be found at cornwall.ca/en/ cao/Nominated-Candidates.asp. That list also includes those running for school board trustees, including Todd Lalonde who confirmed recently he will seek another term with the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. “I believe we have made great strides in the past four years in Catholic education,” said Lalonde. “I admit the years to come may be yet the most challenging. We need strong voices that will stand up and protect our Catholic education system when people continue to challenge our existence. We need to continue to build on the relationship between home, school and our parish community.”

River Institute: “It started as a dream”

CASTING CALL: If you’ve wrecked your house, you might be featured on TV todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - An Ottawa production company is looking for the worst handyman it can find - and the spotlight is shining on Cornwall. Mountain Road Productions will be filming segments this fall for springtime TV show “I Wrecked My House” and producers are hoping some ‘unhandy’ men and women from the Seaway City and surrounding area will volunteer to have their project - or what’s left of it - featured on the show. “Right now we’re in the middle of an Ontario-wide casting call,” said production coordinator Stephanie Beaune. “We would love to come to Cornwall. The tight-knit communities are the best for these types of shows.” The premise is simple: if you’re home renovation has stalled, or simply turned out to be a disaster, producers would love to hear from you. More outrageous projects - and handymen – will be chosen for the show. “I Wrecked My House” is hosted by Steve Patterson, and features a pair of homes in one locale. Producers choose one of the homes to complete the renovations. Beaune said interested people should

send an email to casting@mountainroad. ca and include as much detail about the project as possible, including pictures. Producers expect to shoot segments this fall, and the shows are expected to air next spring.

A group of local politicians and environmentalists celebrate the Institute’s 20th anniversary with a taste of the Castle Brew’s new “Fluvi-ale” that’s infused with St. Lawrence River water on August 28. Pictured are MPP Jim McDonell, Henry Lickers, director of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne department of the environment, Dr. Jeff Ridal, executive director of the river institute, Christina Collard, program leader - administration and special projects - of the river institute, MP Guy Lauzon, Coun. 4419669

CORNWALL, Ontario - Twenty years ago, local citizens, businesses, government representatives, and Mohawks of Akwesasne set a goal for a whole new standard of environmental science in Cornwall. Flash forward to 2014 they’ve succeeded. It all started in response to the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall (and Massena) being declared an environmental area of concern by the International Joint Commission. Dr. Jeff Ridal, executive director of the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences, was one of the original scientists who set out to identify and undertake vital research for the protection and rehabilitation of the St. Lawrence River. “It started as a dream,” said Ridal. “In 2014, we have managed to gain an international recognition for our freshwater research, education, and community partnerships and we

look forward to what lies ahead.” As a salute to community members who have supported and continue to support environmental research and education along the St. Lawrence River, the institute hosted an outdoor soiree aptly named Science Under The Stars, on August 28. Some of the attractions of this event included river-related displays, exhibits, and presentations that showcased the institute’s various projects as well as an environmentally friendly silent auction and dinner. Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger, MPP Jim McDonell, MP Guy Lauzon, and multiple city councillors had plenty of reasons to toast the institute’s success. One in particular was the launch of a unique craft beer made for the institute’s celebration year by Cassel Brewery, with a recipe created by their own staff. Cassel Brew’s St. Lawrence “Fluvi-ale” was formulated by Andy Bramburger and Louis Savard utilizing St. Lawrence River water. For information, visit www.riverinstitute.ca.

Cornwall Classics:

A team of underdogs who became football titans adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Sports fans relived the glory days of the most stunning season in local football history at the Cornwall Classical College “Classics” 50th anniversary reunion. In 1964, the Cornwall Classics defeated the heavily-favoured Mont St-Louis Kodiacs to win the Quebec Intercollegiate Football League Championship and the Pierre Proulx trophy. To mark the milestone, a press conference was held at Summerheights Golf Links Saturday, where Acting Cornwall Mayor Andre Rivette declared Aug. 30 “Classics Day.” Team alumni Robert Marleau and Larry Gabri, head coach Gilles Leger, and captain Pierre Guindon reminisced about their championship season with family, friends, politicians, and special guest/former CFLer

Moe “The Toe” Racine. “The team had a great attitude and wanted to play football,” said Guindon. “We were ready to listen; they were ready to teach us. Most of us had never played football, but that year it gelled and everything fell into place.” Marleau noted that each player had to maintain a 70 per cent grade average to be on the team. He credited the discpline instilled by the college as a major part of their collective success. The ‘64 Classics’ lineup, stacked with future sports talent, doctors, teachers, businessmen and civil servants, was armed with a secret weapon: their opponents thought they only spoke English. Unaware of this advantage, the Kodiacs confidently strategized their plays within earshot of the Classics. Experts were left flabbergasted at the win. The championship game on November

Pictured from left are Robert Marleau, Larry Gabri, Andre Rivette, Gilles Leger, and Pierre Guindon. Adam Brazeau 15, 1964, was broadcasted live by CFTM (TVA). Former Cornwall Mayor Nick Kaneb and Stormont-Dundas MPP Fern Guindon travelled with the team to help that city celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Cornwall wrestler climbs regional ranks adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Newly crowned Big Time Pro Wrestling (BTPW) champion Randy ‘The Rage’ Berry doesn’t wait for opportunity to knock. The five-foot-nine, 216-pound professional wrestler from Cornwall won the Ottawa-based league’s most coveted title on Aug. 30 at the Stormont County Fair in Newington. There was plenty of hype surrounding the fight. Berry vowed on social media that his wrestling career was over if he lost to his opponent Joshua James, the eight-month reigning champion. To his fans’ delight, the retirement party has been cancelled. “There is no bigger reward in this business than being the face of a company,” said Berry. “Being a champion represents all of the sacrifices, hard work, and hardships you’ve put in.” And during his 10 years of fighting in wrestling rings throughout Ontario and Quebec, Berry has endured plenty of all three. By no means was James an easy target. He’s had the privilege of working with World

Wrestling Entertainment legends several times. Berry claimed the same glimpse of fame in 2012 for a WWE Raw and SmackDown taping. He noted that BTPW is the longest consistent running pro wrestling organization in all of eastern Ontario, with a span of 11-plus years. With all the cuts, bumps, and bruises, Berry was glad to dispel any myths about wrestling’s legitimacy. “Pro wrestling is choreographed, not fake,” he said. “Even though we fall into the entertainment category, there are more injuries annually in pro wrestling than any other sport.” Berry was trained by wrestling legend Jacques ‘The Mountie’ Rougeau. Since making his debut with BTPW in early 2012, he has competed in countless main event matches and has defeated most of its top competitors. Berry’s rise comes at a time when Cornwall’s wrestling scene has taken a nosedive. As he climbs regional ranks, Mecca Pro Wrestling, a league Berry founded, has been put on the back burner. Canadian Grand Prix Wrestling (CGPW) is also no longer hosting events in Cornwall. Berry will be making his first title defense on Friday, October 3, in Metcalfe, Ontario.

Tim Houle Auto Talk

Your car’s alternator is designed to recharge the battery after the slight discharging that occurs when you start the car. If a problem occurs with your alternator, you could find yourself with erratic engine operation, fluctuating lights, flashing dashboard warning lights and inability to use such things as power windows. If these problems occur while you are driving, this could put you in a dangerous situation. Here are some tips to follow: •Have the alternator’s drive belt tension checked at every oil change. A loose belt can reduce alternator

output and run down your car’s battery. •Have your car’s charging system checked before travel season. The test will determine if the alternator is putting out the proper amount of current and voltage.

Forty reasons why age shouldn’t matter Todd Lihou TODD.LIHOU@TC.TC

On a cold February night in 1988 my dad turned 40. My mom followed a month later. Fast-forward some 26 years and the ritual of mid-life is soon to be repeated in the Lihou clan as yours truly will one day, not too far from now, measure his time on Earth in terms of four decades. In fact I’ve only got about a month of my 30s left. The good news is I don’t feel nearly as old as my parents looked to me when they celebrated their 40th birthdays. Apologies to my parents, but it’s true… they were old looking back then. I am having a hard time with it, truth be told. Not because I’m getting older, but mostly because I still feel like a man in his late 20s or early 30s…and everyone else is getting old. This 40 thing just doesn’t feel real – it won’t compute.

But there it is, staring me in the face like a bright light in a dark tunnel. I’m not alone. Nearly every person I went to school with is turning 40 this year. The great thing about being born later in the year is that everyone I knew as a kid has turned 40 before me (ha!) and I’ve been able to sport a fiendish grin all year. Until now. There are whispers of a party, mostly from me, because I’d much rather remember my 40th as a celebration than something I dreaded. So many things have changed in the city, and so much more has remained the same, which is why it probably makes comprehending this age so difficult. My commute to work lasts just six minutes, and still takes me past the street where I grew up. I even know the people who now own the house where my parents raised my brother and I. The places I went to school? I cover events at those places all the time, so it’s

almost like I never left. That’s the greatest thing about living and working in a small, tight-knit community like ours. Things are changing, though. For all of my (nearly) 40 years, there has been a department store anchoring the Brookdale Centre. That is changing, as Wal-Mart (it used to be Woolco) will soon make the move to a new, massive locale on Cumberland Street between Seventh and Ninth. When my parents celebrated their 40th Domtar was still the economic engine of the community. Most of that paper mill has been demolished and trucked away – except for the iconic smokestacks that remain like towering sentinels, reminding everyone of what once was. But the biggest change to Cornwall’s landscape will come over the next several months as the Seaway International Bridge is removed.

Every resident of Cornwall today, whether they are 40 or not, only knows a Seaway City with the bridge spanning the skyline. In just 18 months the bridge will be gone…another part of the past. Why is all this news? Frankly it’s not…everyone turns 40 (if they’re lucky) and it should be celebrated instead of vilified. I got out an old yearbook recently and was leafing through its pages…naming people who were dead. Kids I went to school with never made it to 40. An old friend was killed, along with his wife, while waiting for a bus of all things, while out on a date in Ottawa just a few years ago. Another classmate I had, from elementary at Memorial Park Public School, right to Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, died after overdosing during his 20s. Yet another young lady I knew at CCVS was claimed by cancer not long ago. Forty, it seems, is an achievement.

‘Sonny’ Herrington was the driving force behind local lacrosse Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings EDITORIAL@cornwallseawaynews.com

For most of his 90 years, Sonny Herrington didn’t drive. But when it came to lacrosse in this town, he was for the longest time in the driver’s seat. Herrington’s DNA was all over the sport during its heyday here in the sixties and seventies. He lived and breathed the fastest game on two feet. It started with coaching in the Cornwall Minor Lacrosse Association and serving as its secretary from 1963-1971, a time when the sport was putting up robust enrolment numbers; a time when it seemed like every kid in town was walking around with a hickory lacrosse stick. In 1969, Herrington was elected to the Ontario Lacrosse Association as a director and took on the job as chair of the Castrol Cup junior B championship series played in Cornwall. Impressed with his behind-the-scenes work at promoting lacrosse not only in Cornwall but across the province, the OLA in 1970 put his name on the prestigious “Mr. Lacrosse Ontario” award. Three years later at the annual Cornwall Lions Club Sports Awards Dinner, he was named winner of the Jacques Richard Memorial Trophy, the local sports community’s holy grail. In 1974 he was inducted into the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame, later serving as the board president. He made a big leap up the OLA executive

ladder in 1972 when he was elected third vicepresident. The next year he was promoted to second vice-president. During the Second World War Sonny signed up with the Royal Canadian Navy and spent a good part of the war as a member of a crew that hunted German submarines in the Atlantic. After the war a married Sonny worked at the old power station before moving to Ontario Hydro. He helped establish the Navy Club on Sixth Street East and was the last surviving charter member. For his work with the club, he was honoured with the Navy’s Bravo Zulu Award. In navy terms, bravo zulu means job well done. He was the first civilian to receive the award. He lived in and raised his family, seven boys, in the same house his parents raised him ... a three bedroom, one bathroom Englishstyle, brick rowhouse at 136 First St. W. It was a busy home. When the kitchen or living room wasn’t serving as a gathering place for the boys and their pals, mom Viola was tending to her in-house hairdressing business. “Sometimes we’d have 50 kids in the house,” recalled son Rick, who lives in Florida. One Christmas Eve the boys and some pals were playing cards in the kitchen. A large turkey cooked by Viola for the family Christmas dinner was in the oven. About midnight, after Viola had gone to bed, Sonny decided to put the turkey on the table for the gang to “nibble” at. “We ate the whole turkey,” said Rick. “Dad put the top back on the roasting pan and put it back in the oven. Mom took a fit the next

morning when she took off the top and saw most of it gone.” Most time the boys were playing hockey or lacrosse. With the city’s help Sonny had a lacrosse box built on a vacant lot at First and Augustus streets. In the winter it served as a neighbourhood hockey rink complete with a small clubhouse. The gang flooded it with a hose running from the neighbouring Thompson home and scraped off the snow. “We didn’t spend much time in front of the TV,” said Rick. “Dad kept us busy playing sports.” Early Sunday morning Richard Sonny Herrington passed away at Glen-Stor-Dun

Lodge where he had resided for the past several years after Viola died. Funeral service will be held next Tuesday at St. Columban’s Church. TRIVIA ANSWER Money donated by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), which railed against the sale and use of alcohol, paid for construction of a splendid water fountain in Central Park in the early 1900s. The fountain disappeared when the park - now called Horovitz Park and a shadow of its once glorious past - was ripped apart in 1978 during construction of Cornwall Square. TRIVIA What annual summer event was held on Sheek Island and played host to hundreds of city and area children?

A sixth was born at Cornwall General. Four were named after Philip and two after Elizabeth. Parisien was one of the babies. Information sessions for city candidates Thursday night Helen Finn Clerk, City of Cornwall

Do you know there will be municipal and school board elections on Oct. 27? Many people think municipal elections are not important, it’s just municipal, right? Let’s try this: Tomorrow morning, don’t turn on the water to take your shower or make your coffee. Do not take the garbage or recycling to the curb. Do not drive down the street or use the bike path, and especially don’t stop at the stop sign that was put there for your safety. During your lunch hour, do not eat in the park or try to find that new Cornwall business that the Economic Development department helped publicise or call that new doctor that was just recruited to work in the City. Don’t take your kids to the Benson Centre for sports or to Lamoureux Park to the splash pad or to watch the Arts in the Park.

The elections are also for the school boards, so they affect all schools too. Few people are fond of paying taxes, but they pay for all this and more. Where would we be without our Fire, Police and Social Services? If you can honestly say that you don’t use or do any of the above, then maybe you don’t have a reason to vote, but I think we all do. Anyone who is elected is here to represent each and every one of us and set the direction for the City on all these issues and more. If You want to run for election, join us on Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Civic Complex, Salon A, for a presentation by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing to discover want it means to serve your Community, and some of the do’s and don’ts for campaigning. You still have a bit of time, but not much, to put in Your nomination to run for Council. The Clerks Department will be accepting Nominations until Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to vote. The first step is to make sure you are on the electoral list: go to www.cornwall.ca and at the bottom of the page use the Internet Voter Lookup tool to see if you are listed. Remember to check your school support too! If you have moved, your school board choice may have reverted to the default, English Public, if you didn’t specifically ask to support

another school board. It’s your taxes; make sure they go to the right Board for you! Many of you will receive an insert titled ‘Why Vote’ with your tax bill in September. We will also soon see bookmarks at the Library and posters around the City with a QR scan code to go online and check if you are on the electoral list. Your Vote Matters!

Talking new jobs in Cornwall Dear editor: There are two ways of growing the number of jobs in Cornwall. One is to attract established businesses elsewhere to come and open a manufacturing or service industry here. City creates the atmosphere but the final decision is of the corporations. Days of manufacturing plants like Domtar, Courtaulds, CIL are gone but

we should keep on looking for opportunities. Cornwall has done fair to good job in attracting distribution centres and or helping them expanding their businesses. The second one is to help local medium and small businesses to grow. City does not create jobs but the businesses do. These jobs will come only if their business can grow too. I believe that City should be instrumental

in further improving the atmosphere so that businesses have the need and desire to expand, grow and create more jobs. Recently we have seen downsizing of our radio station and Standard Freeholder. Cornwall Square is loosing tenants. Jobs are being lost on which we do not have any control as the decisions are being made out of town.

We have to do what is in our control. Next Council that we elect should have the ideas and desire to improve/create this atmosphere. We have the control on what we do. Council should work for the growth of the City and not status quo. Naresh Bhargava, Cornwall

If you are presently working

– your future for your next 10 years Denis Thibault

It is obvious that with all of the new and enhanced technology surrounding us, it means that we are working in a new, more flexible, more knowledge-focused workplace. The fact that most of us will live longer lives also ensures that we should reasonably expect to be able to continue making meaningful contribution, through paid and unpaid work, well beyond traditional retirement age. When you evaluate these two statements I can’t help but think that experienced employees who have kept up with technology changes will continue to be comfortable in productive & fulfilling employment or in second and third careers. It is becoming quite clear to employers that workers over 55 are in many cases quite technology savvy. Some employees in their 50s, 60s and 70s for instance use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

Many 20-year-old employees do not have workforce essential skills coming out of school and don’t know how to use the tools in ways that are appropriate for business but, older employees have those skills as well as experience that are important to businesses. Social media has emerged very quickly in the workplace and there is an excellent comfort level and use at all ages. If I’m an employer I want skilled & experienced workers. In our ongoing survey of employers across SDG and P-R our Employer One project has found that very few employers have meaningful succession plans but numerous managers are stating a willingness to enhance the skills of workers 45 years of age and older. Managers and employees are beginning to have in-depth discussions about training needs and career opportunities instead of succession planning. Many employers realize that it does not matter that an employee is 35 or 55, ongoing career development is essential for all. Labour market information suggests that during the next 10 years, government services, employers and employees will recognize the

importance of transitioning with purpose into new careers or the next stage of your present one. Canada-Ontario Job Fund Agreement is the foundation on which this transition will happen. It will mean more relevant approaches to career exploration, lifelong subsidized training and development leading to successful transition strategies for experienced employees. Both employees and employers fall into the trap of believing we will exit the workforce in our 50s and 60s. Often, employees readily admit that they do not want to continue doing the role or work that they are currently assigned but feel that there are no other options. It leads organizations to shortchange themselves on how to best use the talent that they have at their disposal and that is why in many cases employees feel stuck. Longstanding employees have significant impact on the present and future of a company and with proper up-skilling can expect much more satisfaction from their own careers as they age if provided with opportunities to contribute. Canada-Ontario Job Fund Agreement will offer employers and employees the

opportunity to capitalize on the business benefit of new programs for employees even in their 50s and 60s. New career paths and options will become available within the next year to retain, retrain and engage experienced employees in meaningful work that supports your business strategy. Now that does not mean that workers are not interested in retirement but it does mean that under the right conditions many would love to continue to contribute instead of spending their days at coffee shops or addressing the to-do list at home. We are all living with the technological revolution working its way into our everyday world while, at the same time, our assumptions about career, employment and talent are being challenged. In my opinion, the Canada-Ontario Job Fund Agreement is a great opportunity for both employers and employees to take advantage of new career models that reflect the reality of today’s demographics and position our businesses as leaders of the fastest growing & hottest economic market in Ontario.

Cornwall’s budding chefs ready for the kitchen CORNWALL, Ontario - Eleven budding chefs celebrated all things food at a graduation ceremony of sorts Friday in Cornwall. The young chefs spent the last 16 weeks being schooled on the culinary arts as part of a Youth Skills Connection project helmed by the Eastern Ontario Training Board. A luncheon, attended by local dignitaries including MP Guy Lauzon, MPP Jim McDonell and Mayor Bob Kilger, celebrated the transition of the students’ theoretical studies to practical applications in a kitchen. The students will now move out into food-preparation industry at places like the Cornwall Community Hospital, St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, Love Love Food and the Ontario Hockey Academy where they will put their new-found skills to the test. “I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of our student’s lives for the last 16 weeks and witness first-hand their transformation into successful kitchen helpers,” said project manager Kimberly Vass-Lihou. “All of them have shown the initiative necessary to make a name for themselves in the food-preparation industry.” Lauzon told the students they now have a huge feather in their cap. “In a past life I was an employment councillor,” he said. “If a client came in and knew their way around a kitchen I could get them a job like that. “You can go anywhere now, and get a job.” The program is built around giving at-risk youth the skills necessary to land full-time employment without the need for social assistance programming. McDonell echoed Lauzon’s sentiments. “Most people were enjoying their summer vacation, but you were here,” he said, from the hall at Trinity Anglican Church where the students spent the last three-plus months studying. “It’s a great trade to be involved in and a great tool to take on.” Students were presented with gifts from Trinity’s Rev. Frank Kirby. The program will continue this fall and move into rural parts of the community while taking on new students.

Some of the students who took part in the Eastern Ontario Training Board’s kitchen helper program are flanked by project manager Kimberly Vass-Lihou, left, and Keitha Fisher, programming instructor.

So why did Christ suffer? Pastor John Scorgie Pastor’s Perspective

reason for Jesus’ awful pain. The sufferings of Christ shout to me personally four powerful truths. One, His sufferings prove the amazing love which He has for this world of humanity. Out of pure love He suffered so. Two, His sufferings paid the penalty for the sins of rebellious humanity. Our debt was paid in full. Three, His sufferings placate or pacify the

holy wrath of God against sinful people. From one angle, it was a display of perfect justice. Four, His sufferings provide complete salvation for a lost world. Nothing more is required. I do believe that the Bible backs my reasoning. I would encourage you to carefully and prayerfully consider these reasons for Jesus’ pain, and may His Spirit confirm these realities in your own heart! 5755364

We have all seen the universal symbol of the Christian faith countless times. It is the cross, of course. Now the original cross upon which Jesus suffered and ultimately died was

not made of gold or silver, steel or aluminum, plastic or glass, concrete or fibreglass. Christ personally anguished and finally died on a rough wooden instrument of Roman capital punishment. That cross was definitely a means of cruel torture. So why would a good and holy man have to suffer to such an extent? Was it really necessary? You may very well have contemplated such a mystery in your own quiet moments. Let me try to explain the

Shar’s Tip of the Week Nothing will extend the life of carpets (and for that matter, other furnishings) more than faithful vacuuming. Regular vacuuming removes the dirt and grit that grind and wear away at carpet fibers as we walk over the area. Never use the carpet power head on wood or hard-surface floors. This could create scratches on softer hardwood, use a plain floor brush attachment to vacuum. Take your time and let the vacuum work for you. The power head needs time to loosen the dirt and the air flow needs time to suck it up.

We would like your surplus apples and other fruits and vegetables to process as needed and donate to area food banks, call 932-8721 or 347-7744. Skateboarding legend Claude Regnier has been grinding the city’s gears for years to make local politicians realize the importance of having a top-notch skate park. Perhaps it’s time for skaters in the area to unite and form an alliance so city hall catches the drift.

What is self sabotage and why do we do it? Jason Christoff Get Fit Cornwall JASON@REVOLUTIONWEIGHTLOSSCLINIC.COM

In the first two articles I described what often initiates self sabotaging behaviour and also some classic examples of self sabotage. Classic self sabotage scenarios involve people joining fitness clubs and never going, starting a diet and then breaking the diet, buying yet another piece of home exercise equipment that never gets used etc. Health based self sabotage is common today yet self sabotage can infect a person’s behaviour all across the board. From romantic endeavours to our finances and from the jobs we settle for to the life we settle for, People who self sabotage in one area often sabotage in many other areas as well because the foundation of most self sabotaging behaviour is the same.

In the second article I touched on the fact that most self sabotaging behaviour stems from fear, often experienced in childhood. Fear is not easily processed by children and when fear is encountered as a child, the child’s options are very limited for reducing or eliminating the fear. If an adult experiences fear, not only can an adult’s mind more efficiently process the fear based experience, adults can also do many other things to alleviate the fear that children can’t. Most children can’t move out of town, defend themselves or buy a ticket for the next train leaving the station. All humans are equipped with the genetic defence mechanisms necessary for dealing with fear. Children exposed to chronic fear or high impact emotional/physical trauma, in their early years, often pull back or end up disconnecting emotionally. The reason the body is equipped to deal with pain via disconnection is simple. Chronic pain can over load the body’s self

defence based nervous system, otherwise known as the fight or flight system. Any organism that’s getting physically or mentally tormented for long periods of time (or even short bursts of intense trauma) reserves the capacity to literally withdraw their nervous system from operation, as to not feel the pain as intensely. So a child who is chronically abused can literally shut down their nervous system so they don’t feel as much pain. This is the disconnection I talk of. When this disconnected child grows up to be an adult, sometimes the disconnection can still be active and disconnecting can become a regular coping mechanism. This disconnection is the base of most self sabotaging behavior because that disconnection, first executed to dull the nervous system to pain, now is unable to read any life situation effectively. Here’s an example. Picture a person you’ve seen consuming alcohol shots, late at night at a bar, after

already having too much to drink. Well, disconnected people can’t often effectively assess how drunk they already are because they are disconnected from feeling exactly what’s happening to them. They can’t feel how drunk they already are, can’t feel that their body isn’t liking the additional drinks and couldn’t really feel how drunk they were hour by hour because they’re in this disconnected state. Disconnection it about not being able to feel what is good and what is bad because the system that judges these things has been shut down because of fear, most likely childhood fear. Fear is heavily involved in self abusive behaviour and self abusive behaviour and self sabotage are first cousins in the destructive behaviour family. How can we effectively deal with self sabotaging behaviour and our trapped fear, in order to move forward? This will be answered in the next article. A free self sabotage seminar is being given in September.

how to hold the club, foot positioning, weight distribution, etc. As golf is accessible for all, it’s enough to be interested and to want to learn the basic techniques; with a bit of practice, everyone can get there. Relax, inform yourself, ask questions. Don’t be shy, everyone had to start somewhere. Even the famous Tiger! You will be more comfortable with your game and will have a much better time. And above all, you will progress more quickly. Think about it: you certainly wouldn’t venture onto the highest ski slope for your first descent without taking a few lessons and trying a few runs on easy slopes! It’s the same thing with golf. After a series of lessons, it’s recommended to start on the driving ranges, and then move on to the par three courses. Once these are mastered, you will have more pleasure playing on the larger scale courses... The steps to take before setting off on a large course are pleasant, and will give you more confidence in yourself.
