CORNWALL, Ontario - Planning is underway to open a medicinal marijuana packaging and processing facility within city limits.

Sweetleaf Medicinals Inc. is the latest brainchild of Michael Langburt, and aims to offer business services to companies operating within the cannabis industry. Currently, Langburt and his team are seeking a space for their operation.

With hopes of opening shop behind Hood Packaging at 1800 Vincent Massey, Langburt says that rezoning the space is the first hoop they must jump through. Having met with the city’s Planning Advisory Committee (PAC) to further discuss the details involved, Langburt says that there are a lot of factors to be considered.

“We’ve presented our model, but we’re still

not sure whether it will be accepted,” said Langburt. “This is the first of many steps we will have to take along the way. There’s a lot of licences that come into play.”

Mary Joyce-Smith, Division Manager for Planning Services says this case is reminiscent of a 2015 proposal to approve a bylaw allowing a medical marijuana facility to open in Cornwall.

While the 2015 project never got off the ground, Joyce-Smith says that the city is using the case as a reference point for Sweetleaf.

“Essentially, we are following same protocol and specific zoning bylaws for medical marijuana that we saw in 2015,” said Joyce-Smith.

“Many of the same issues will be revisited.”

It may be a long road ahead for Sweetleaf, but Langburt says he is willing to follow the rules to see his vision through.

“We’ve got some good things ahead, and we’re hoping we can move forward with the city’s help,” said Langburt.

Hybrid course, the actual road had two curves, which some riders may be new to, practising on straights,” said Regnier. “After laying it down, it was more like what I used to train back in the 70s and 80s.”

Of the three categories, Regnier says that the Giant Slalom appeals predominately to the longboard community, with its characteristically wider turns.

“In terms of course setting, it’s not that different from ski racing,” said Regnier. “Typically, it’s on a bigger hill with wider turns, and faster speeds.”

Regnier says that Tight Slalom requires the most discipline, requiring riders to really put in the work to succeed. With Sunday’s Tight Slalom unfortunately getting rained out, riders will reconvene on Monday for both Tight and Giant Slalom.

“Like anything else, if you want to be good at something, you have to put some time into it,” said Regnier.

Alycia Douglass CORNWALL, Ontario - The city was embracing skateboarding culture this weekend at the World Championships of Slalom Skateboarding. Taking place at both Lamoureux Park and Bellwood Dr, the event welcomed everyone from pro level skateboarders to those just starting out in the sport.

With 45 competitors coming from across the globe to compete in yesterday’s Hybrid event, organizer and long-time slalom campaigner, Claude Regnier says it’s been an exciting event for Cornwall.

“Part of this is an awareness campaign for the future outdoor skateboard park we’re working on,” said Regnier.

With three divisions taking place over the course of the weekend, Regnier says that courses will be slightly more technical than some riders may be used to.

MPP discusses value of community news with TC Media

By TC Media staff CORNWALL, Ontario - Local MPP Jim McDonell recently met with TC Media General Manager Rick Shaver to discuss the value of community newspapers in our region but also in our province and country. During their conversation , the following points were discussed: Local advertising supports local news, so why does foreign-owned digital media now claim a larger share of the government’s total advertising spend?

•With more than 400 printed newspapers editions throughout Ontario, accounting for almost 8.5 million circulation each week, Ontario newspapers represent a powerful medium. Current research from early 2017 confirms that newspaper readership remains strong and stable, making it an effective medium for communicating with Ontarians.

Across Canada, nine out of ten adults (87%) report reading newspaper content on any platform, including print, desktop/laptop, phone or tablet. Print is still the leading platform for reading newspapers, although more than four in ten printed community newspaper readers report accessing newspaper content on ALL four platforms measured. When it comes to local community information, newspapers are the primary media source; 95% of printed community newspaper readers report reading for local news, editorial, sports, entertainment and events.

•Despite this compelling research, the Ontario government continues to under-use this powerful medium when it comes to placing advertising. The government of Ontario has greatly reduced its advertising in newspapers over the past decade, while increasing the amount of its online advertising, much of which is through US-based companies, such as Google and Facebook. In 2015 approximately $9M was spent on online advertising, with a portion of that being completely exempt from the review provisions under the Government Advertising Act. •Ontario’s community newspapers believe that the Ontario government should demonstrate a stronger interest in protecting local news publications by advertising in community media. Not only would this support stronger local community news sources, the evidence as well as the experience of other advertisers show that local community newspaper advertising works. If the Ontario government is interested in getting its message out, as well as committed to the strength of community media, it should return to community newspapers as a preferred advertising partner in order to improve audience reach through all community newspaper platforms, including print and online.

Shaver also pointed out the importance of the Waste Diversion File and how the present plan should stay.

While the weather was slightly gloomy, it didn’t stop kids from enjoying the multiple bouncy castles, train rides, or face painting the event had to offer. With festivities taking place all day long, free hotdogs were handed out throughout the day.

While the day’s activities were a fun way to wind down from summer, Labour Council President, Elaine MacDonald says they were small parts of a bigger celebration.

The theme of this year’s parade is “We Stand for Fairness,” highlighting the importance of improving pensions, shrinking number of good jobs in Canada, as well as the lack of access to paid sick leave.

“The world changes, and the workplace changes, and sometimes things that may have worked in previous times need to be reinvented,” said MacDonald. “So many issues like healthcare just fade into the background, and they become vulnerable.”

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario - The Stormont County Fair closed out the summer in style this Labour Day weekend, celebrating 150 years of agricultural fun.

While Sunday’s rain put a bit of a damper on some of the weekend’s activities, there was still plenty to see and do at the fair. With horse shows and livestock competitions taking place throughout the weekend, folks had ample opportunity to cheer on their friends or witness something a little different.

Gordon Moat has a deep-rooted passion for antique spinning and weaving equipment, and came to the fair to enlighten those old and young on what has become somewhat of a lost art. With a spinning wheel cobbled together from two wheels, Moat unpacked his vast knowledge on the works of Horton Row, a 19thcentury craftsman and entrepreneur in Kemptville.

“I like getting the children to actually hold the fleece,” said Moat. “They get the feel of the fibres leaving their hands, and it’s really a novel experience. Today is a rare sight, because we have a sheep sheerer working on one end, and

the knitting club on the other.”

In addition to Moat’s demonstration, Robert L. Vaughan, an experienced blacksmith, was also showcasing something no longer seen in everyday life.

“I do a variety of things with no torches, no electric – just the heat of the fire,” said Vaughan.

“Some people are quite fascinated with the craft – there are things that can be done with a forge and anvil that you can’t do any other way.”

Another demonstration which received heavy praise was the South Stormont County Volunteer Firefighters’ emergency response reenactment. Showing how things like the jaws of life are used in action, the purpose of the demo was to inform people of the careful procedure that firefighters must follow to ensure safety.

“It’s a great way to show people what actually goes into saving a life,” said volunteer firefighter, Rodney Beaudette. “Everything was done in slow motion so we could break it down and explain to the crowd what we were doing and why we were doing it.”

While the fair has come and gone for another year, a good time was undoubtedly had by all.

Spine Care Plus: Relocating to Serve You Better

Community members respond to MacLean’s article CORNWALL, Ontario - There has been a national and even international spotlight on Cornwall in recent weeks as the Nav Centre has taken up the task to host asylum seekers from Haiti who have fled from the United States.

National magazine MacLean’s wrote a story on Cornwall that was published on their website on Aug. 29 titled “Cornwall’s garlic festival goes on despite anti-migrant sentiment”.The full article can be read here.

The Mayor of Cornwall and Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects (which organizes the Garlic Festival) both feel that the article is a misrepresentation of the situation in Cornwall and at the Nav Centre.

“I’ve never seen an article like it in my life,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy.

O’Shaughnessy explained that he spent more than a half hour talking with the reporter from MacLean’s and was disappointed to see that much of what he told her was not represented in the article.

“I mentioned to her that people coming here were vetted with police checks,” he said. “Also that the City of Cornwall had no additional stress on our city resources.”

As for the article’s claim of anti-migrant sentiment, the Mayor feels that this statement was also off base.

“That’s not what I’ve seen and that’s not what I’ve heard,” he said. “Certainly there was some animosity, but it was not widespread. There were people who were simply looking for answers. We

held a special meeting of council where we went over all of the details and I did not receive any more questions after that meeting.”

Councillor Bernadette Clement, one of the supporters of the failed motion to provide bus passes to the asylum seekers that was mentioned in the article, also feels that the article omitted the support and good will that Cornwallites have shown in face of this extraordinary situation.

“I was very disappointed by that portrayal because it doesn’t reflect the good will,” she said.

“During the whole week last week I couldn’t keep up with all of the offers of support.”

Clement also said the article’s characterization of the bus pass issue was not accurate and feels that the motion failed not because of a desire to withhold access to public transportation to asylum seekers, but because they were already being given bus tickets from the province. She said that if there was any negative reaction from the public in Cornwall that it mostly came from a lack of information and answers to their questions.

“What was missing was the proper flow of information at the end of the day,” she said. “I felt that people were either positive or they were concerned in terms of the availability of information.”

Clement hopes that an after action analysis can be taken of this experience to better prepare the city in the future.

Brenda Norman of Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects (KCEP) said that she and her fellow board members feel that they were

misled as to the intention of the MacLean’s article. They wish to make it clear that the Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival and KCEP has always been about community and inclusion and that not a single person or vendor choose to be absent from this year’s event because of the presence of the asylum seekers.

Norman also explained that they always had full faith in the Nav Centre and that the Garlic Festival could not have gone as smoothly without their professionalism.

“Stuff like this is daily life for the Nav Centre,” she said.

The KCEP board is going as far as saying that

MacLean’s misrepresented them.

“We consider this to be a very discredited piece of journalism based on all the errors and obvious sensationalism,” said Sylvie Paquette KCEP Vice-President and Communications Officer.

Mayor O’Shaughnessy said that the asylum seekers at the Nav will be gone by the end of this week, but that the tents on the site will remain up at least until the situation is re-evaluated on Oct. 1.

Seaway News reached out to the reporter who wrote the MacLean’s piece, but has not received a response at this time.

Next Thursday the City of Cornwall will be holding an open house at the Cornwall Civic Complex to get public input on their strategy plan to develop and grow the city over the next 20 years.

It is hard to imagine what the City of Cornwall will look like in 2037. All we have to go on is the landscape we are facing now and right now, the City has some major assets, namely geography, and some major obstacles, namely financial in nature.

I’ve seen people comment that they would like to see more jobs in the city over the next 20 years, no new condos and one person even wants a monorail. I’m not sure about the monorail idea, I remember it didn’t work out too well for The Simpsons. What I do think we need to do is get a handle on our tax situation and promote innovation in Cornwall.

Innovation will lead to growth, to put it simply.

As for the tax situation, this is something that City Council needs to get a handle on and

they do not have 20 years to do so.

This past budget season, council passed a tax increase of 1.74 percent, a smaller tax increase than the year before despite the fact that the city is facing a tougher financial situation.

Council had the opportunity to raise the residential tax rate by 2.78 percent, but chose the lower number instead. This lower tax rate will cost us more in the future.

The Mayor put it best when he said, “I’m going to support 2.78 and why? Because that doesn’t even address the problems we have this year,” said Mayor O’Shaughnessy. “We’ve accomplished nothing to tackle this $3 million deficit. There’s no one who dislikes raising taxes more than me. Cutting for the sake of cutting makes it harder for future years. I can just see this compounding and it is just getting worse and worse. This is just an illusion to the people that we are saving them money, but we’re not.”

The City is already seeing evidence of this.

This summer we had two watermains break.

While the city is replacing old watermains, it is not spending enough money to keep up with

the rate of decay, which is costing residents What the City must do immediately to plan more money. This is just one example of how for the future is figure out a proper tax rate that city tax revenue is not meeting the City’s financial needs, such as maintaining critical meets the needs of residents and not just pull infrastructure. the lowest number they can out of the air.

Politicians around the world make promises they don’t intend to keep! the country.

It took more than two years before I was approved as a landed immigrant.

The situation in Syria is different.

That country has been at war for more than five years.

But, now Canada is facing a different kind of a problem.

President Trump’s executive order on immigration stranded people around the world and provoked condemnation.

This was a golden opportunity for Trudeau to restate the country’s open-door policy.

Canada had no choice but to welcome thousands of refugees, mostly from Haiti, who found themselves shut out of the United States.

More than 10,000 Haitians are already in Canada.

I simply regard this as queue jumping.

Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake some years ago.

That country is at peace now.

This influx of Haitians has created gigantic logistics problems for Canada.

Trudeau has simply lost all control of our border crisis.

What about thousands of legal immigrants who want to make Canada their new home?

They will have to wait while Haitians continue to pour in.

Very soon people from El Salvador will cross into Canada to seek refugee status.

How does this end?

This is a crisis of illegal immigration along the Canada/U.S. border.

Canada is making it much easier for the U.S. to get rid of many illegal immigrants.

This usually happens during election.

You just have to look at countless promises President Donald Trump made.

Now, President Trump is struggling to keep some of the promises.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is no exception.

He, too, made numerous promises to get elected.

Trudeau has already broken some of the promises he was determined to keep.

One of Trudeau’s promises was to strengthen diversity.

“To those fleeing persecution, terror and war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith,” he wrote on Twitter one fine

Saturday afternoon.

Another post showed Prime Minister Trudeau with a child, apparently a Syrian refugee, who had just arrived, with the caption:”Welcome to Canada.”

One of Trudeau’s immediate priorities after he took office in late 2015 was to drastically accelerate the entry of refugees from Syria.

Since then Canada has admitted more than 40,000 refugees into a country with a population of around 36 million.

Let me make one thing clear.

I came to Canada in 1972 when my family lost everything in Tanzania after mass nationalization.

At that time, coming to Canada was extremely tough.

You had to have a certain education, some money, a profession and a reliable contact in

THIS WEEK IN 1967: A picket at the strikebound C-I-L plant on Brookdale Avenue was arrested and charged with obstruction during a confrontation between striking members of the United Mine Workers of American and a train carrying three car loads of salt to the plant which continued to operate with non-union staff members. Later, at a city council meeting, Ald. Ralph Carrara accused city police of being used by the company as strikebreakers.

However, the president of the union said police were not taking sides in the dispute.

• Cornwall Street Railway announced that bus service was being extending through the Riverdale area. ... Young violinist Joel Derouin received the highest marks in Ontario on the Royal Conservatory of Music practical examination.

• The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) gave its blessing for the purchase of Glengarry Gardens by Alexandria for $56,000. The arena had been shut down for a year and was being used as a warehouse.

• Magistrate P.C. Bergeron gave a city man a 30-day jail sentence for a repeat conviction of being intoxicated in a public place. “Time in jail will give you a chance to dry out,” said the magistrate.

• The new regional school of nursing in Cornwall opened its doors and the first student to register was Margaret Lawson of St. Andrew’s. The school was using temporary quarters at 321 Second St. E. until the new school was built.

• City council agreed to pay travel costs for the Cornwall T-Birds who were on their way to the second game of the Canadian junior B lacrosse championship best-of-three series in Elora, Ont. The T-Birds won the first game in Cornwall 14-1. Ald. Angelo Lebano said it was good investment because the club had a good chance of returning with the Canadian title.

• Site for new super high school to replace Cornwall Collegiate and St. Lawrence undecided but you can bet that it will be built in the city. The list of potential sites probably around three, four at best. Few years back the city had a full court press on to have Holy Trinity built in the Marleau Avenue area. The Catholic board bucked the pressure and bogus claim that a preferred Boundary Road property was not a safe site (too close to the Industrial Park) and built in South Glengarry. When it came to building a new super elementary school, the public board went with a Marleau and Nick Kaneb Drive site.

HERE AND THERE: With her approval rating down to 15% and a provincial election less than a year away (June 7), Preem Kathy is pulling out all the stops. On a Toronto radio show two weeks ago she blamed the Mike Harris (Conservative) government for many of the problems - massive debt, Hydro horror show, etc. - her government is struggling to fix. That was four consecutive Liberal governments ago!

• Fate of Alexandria-Cornwall Diocese is expected to be announced before end of the year. Two options are on the table - leave as is and appoint a new bishop or amalgamate with the Diocese of Ottawa. Regardless, a decision on the future of Nativity Church will be near the top of the “To Do” list. There is a movement to prevent the 130-year-old co-cathedral from being sold and decommissioned.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Tamblyn’s Drug Store was in the King George Hotel block on the northeast corner of Pitt and Second streets.

The chain was founded by Canadian Gordon Tamblyn in 1904. The name of the Cornwall store was changed to Boot’s in 1978 after the chain was sold to the United Kingdom pharmacy group.

Next police chief could come from within Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings Dan Parkinson is scheduled to retire as chief of Cornwall Community Police Service next year and the search for his replacement is under way. The police board may not have far to look for a replacement. The smart money is on Deputy Chief Danny Aikman who is sitting in the wings.

If the long-serving deputy is handed the reins, it will be the first promotion of a Cornwall Police Service deputy to the position since 1974, when Earl Landry replaced Allan Clarke.

The current chief, who came to Cornwall from Peel Regional Police Service, will retire as Cornwall Police Service’s second longest serving police chief - 14 years. Clarke, who headed up the combined Cornwall Township and city force in 1957, served 17 years. Clarke had been chief of the old Cornwall force since 1953.

Parkinson, who was president of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OCAP) 2009-10, will leave the service with a long list of honours and awards that include an honourary diploma from St. Lawrence College, the Queen’s silver, gold and diamond jubilee medals, and the OACP’s highest honour, the President’s Award, which he received in 2012.

On Nov. 14, 1983, Parkinson, who started with the Mississauga police force in 1973, was working as a Peel homicide detective when he got a call to the Toronto International Airport parking lot about a suspicious vehicle. Stuffed inside the trunk was the body of mobster Paul Volpe.

Parkinson became one of several Peel homicide investigators assigned to the case.

The murder of the mobster, who had a lot of enemies in the underworld, has never been solved.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Rachel’s Kids House of Hope announced that they were grateful to be the beneficiaries of this year’s local Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie campaign. The Smile Cookie will be on sale at local Tim Hortons’ from Sept. 11 to Sept.

17. Money raised from the sold Smile Cookies will go to Rachel’s Kids, which in turn invests that money in helping local families in the community.

“We are extremely excited to be chosen again as beneficiaries of the Smile Cookies,” said Rachel’s Kids Executive Director Kim Lauzon. “All money raised from smile cookies goes directly back out to the community.”

Darryn McPhail a local Tim Horton’s franchise owner said that it he was pleased to work with Rachel’s Kids again and admired the enthusiasm with which they participated in the event last year.

“We’ve never had anyone get involved in the program as much as Rachel’s Kids,” he said.

Last year the Smile Cookie week raised around $40, 000 for Rachel’s Kids.

“I like that it can be fast paced, but there are also times when it gets slower and you get to really know the patient,” Walsh said. “When you are working with sick and elderly patients the most important things to remember is to be hands on, but also to listen to their needs.”

RPNs are employed in hospitals, long-term care facilities and residential care facilities.

Some also work in the offices of physicians and companies.

The Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB) projects that more RPNs will be needed in Ontario as the province’s population continues to grow and also age. While RPNs will continue to be found in great numbers in hospitals, more will be found in community health programs as community outreach and at-home care continue to be emphasized.

“Registered practical nurses who are able to accommodate long shifts and work flexible hours will find their job prospects greatly improved,” the EOTB states. “Many opportunities may be available for part-time, split-shift, and contract work. Nurses who are able to travel will likely have better employment opportunities as some may be required to work at multiple locations.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Quick response, along with the right training and right equipment helped Cornwall’s emergency services save a man’s life recently.

While working the night shift on July 13, 2017, three members of the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) responded to a call at the home of Richard Duperron.

Duperron’s wife had called emergency services after her husband collapsed.

Being closest, Constables Kim Norman, Casey McGregor and Jennifer Payment arrived on the scene first.

“When we arrived the patient was on the ground and unresponsive,” said Cst. McGregor.

“He was turning gray and we couldn’t find a pulse.”

All three officers began administering CPR to Mr. Duperron and prepared to use their Zoll AED Plus defibrillator.

They applied the defibrillator three times and after a third time, they found that Mr. Duperron had regained his pulse. It was around this time that paramedics Elizabeth Hill and Andrew Van der Heyden arrived on the scene and continued to administer life saving measures as they took Duperron to hospital. In all, from the time police arrived on the scene, the whole incident transpired in about 10 minutes.

“If we didn’t have that (the defibrillator), I don’t think we would have saved him,” said Cst. Kim Norman.

For the three officers it was their first time using the defibrillator. The Zoll AED defibrillators are carried by 13 police cruisers and are provided to the CCPS by the Cornwall SDG Paramedics Service through their Public Access Defibrillator Program.

Around 25 minutes after the police officers arrived on scene, they went to the hospital and found that Duperron was awake and talking.

“This really shows the importance of early recognition and CPR,” said Paramedic Elizabeth Hill. “It can save a life.”

Duperron got a chance to meet the officers and paramedics who saved his life at the Paramedic station on Campbell Rd. on Friday, Sept. 1.

He thanked all of them for saving his life and said that he remembered nothing from the incident. He said for him it was like going to sleep and waking up in the hospital.

“Without the efforts of the Police Officers and Paramedics in those critical first few minutes, the outcome my have been entirely different,” said Commander Brad Nuttley of the Paramedic Services. “The act of performing CPR and using an AED prior to Paramedics arrival provided the window of opportunity needed for the successful treatment of the casualty and the restoration of breathing and circulation.”

FINCH, Ontario - Broomball can be traced back to the early 1900s. Its exact origin’s is debatable, some documentation points to Barrie, Ontario; while others claim it was the First Nations that passed this sport on to the settlers. But regardless of its origin, we can all agree that it’s a fun Canadian sport.

At approximately only 1/3 of the cost of hockey, with minimal equipment requirements (broomball shoes, hockey helmet, elbow pads, shin pads, gloves and of course a broomball stick) and less time commitment (one game per week)… This sport is appealing to many Canadian families. Skill training is incorporated in with games and most games take place at your home arena, therefore travel cost & time are also kept to a minimal. This combination makes broomball a win-win sport for both children and parents alike.

Not only are team sports such as broomball fun and exciting, but they also bring about a

gamut of other great benefits. It can help build your child’s confidence; provides regular exercise; expands their social skills and develops relationships; contributes to stronger academics by teaching children discipline and time management skills; as well as teaches children respect and helps them to put winning into perspective.

Eastern Ontario has always been a centre for strong-skilled broomball players, with Finch being one of the primary hubs in our area. Finch Youth Broomball 2017-18 season starts the weekend of September 22nd, children ranging in age from 4 to 15 are welcome to join. Registration fees are $165 for Sprouts (ages 4-8), and $195 for Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget. Registration will be taking place on September 9th and 12th at the Finch Arena (downstairs). World class curling returns to Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario – Forty of the top Curling teams from across the globe will converge on Cornwall’s Curling Centre from Sept. 14 – 17, 2017 to participate in the 21st Annual AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic, a World Curling Tour event presented by WFG Financial Group.

This event, the longest running event on the World Curling Tour will feature a who’s who of the Curling world and will be a chance for everyone in Cornwall to meet and see the greatest curlers in the world in a very personal setting.

The field includes 2014 Olympic gold medalist Brad Jacobs from Canada, the bronze medalist, Niklas Edin from Sweden, and the current Tim Horton’s Brier Champion Brad Gushue.

Additionally, the field will have other world champs and Brier champions such as Ontario’s Glenn Howard, Manitoba’s Mike McEwen, 2014 World Champion Thomas Ulsrud from Norway, as well as other teams from Canada, Scotland, Korea, Switzerland, Japan, Netherlands and the United States. The Men’s and Ladies’ event has a combined purse of $90,000, which is proudly the largest purse during the World Curling Tour season, outside of the Grand Slam Events. In, fact the

Un appui vital pour le Centre Charles-Émile-Claude CORNWALL, Ontario - Depuis 2009, le Centre Charles-Émile-Claude, centre polyvalent des aîné(e)s inc est reconnu à titre de centre de personnes âgées au sein de la municipalité de la Ville de Cornwall par le Secrétariat aux affaires des personnes âgées de l’Ontario.

Cette reconnaissance s’accompagne annuellement d’une subvention de 42 700 $ par année. Grâce à ce financement, le Centre est en mesure d’offrir des services et des programmes de qualité aux francophones âgées de 50 ans et plus. Parallèlement, au cours de l’année 20172018, nous recevrons une subvention spéciale supplémentaire au montant de 15 000 $ pour appuyer le développement de ce Centre. Ce montant permettra d’augmenter l’équipement matériel du Centre, d’effectuer certaines petites rénovations pour le bon maintien de notre édifice.

Nous sommes très reconnaissants de l’appui et de la confiance qui nous est octroyé par ce ministère. Prévention du suicide : Prends une minute, change une vie Communiqué de presse de le BSEO Le 10 septembre est la date réservée chaque année pour célébrer la Journée mondiale de la prévention du suicide (JMPS). La JMPS est organisée pour sensibiliser sur le suicide et pour le prévenir. Cette année, « prends une minute, change une vie ».

On estime que chaque jour au Canada, 11 personnes mettent fin à leur vie et 210 font une tentative de suicide. L’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) déclare que chaque année, plus de 800 000 personnes meurent d’un suicide, et que jusqu’à 25 fois autant tentent de se suicider.

Chacune a son histoire. Certaines personnes

sont bien connues dans la communauté tandis que d’autre sont plus isolées. Mais peu importe les circonstances, nous avons tous un rôle à jouer dans le soutien des personnes parmi nous qui sont plus vulnérables.

Robyn Hurtubise et Joanne LedouxMoshonas, coprésidentes de la Coalition pour la prévention du suicide dans l’est de Champlain, soulignent l’importante que peut avoir une minute pour effectuer un changement dans la vie de quelqu’un. « C’est parfois tout ce qu’il faut », disent-elles. « Les gens en détresse ont besoin d’aide et veulent que quelqu’un s’en rende compte et leur en offre. Quand les choses semblent ne pas aller, prenez une minute et voyez si vous avez le pouvoir de changer une

vie. » Cette année marque de plus, la 15e Journée mondiale de la prévention du suicide annuelle, une initiative de L’association internationale pour la prévention du suicide qui a vu le jour en 2003 et qui reçoit l’aval de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé. L’association internationale pour la prévention du suicide met à votre disposition nombre de ressources et d’activités pour vous aider à sensibiliser pour prévenir le suicide.

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario - Le 28 août 2017, alors qu’ils patrouillaient dans la région de South Glengarry, des enquêteurs du Groupe de travail régional de Cornwall (GTRCS) ont remarqué des activités suspectes le long de Chevrier Road. Les officiers ont observé un bateau, chargé de sacs à ordures contenant du tabac de contrebande, en train d’être déchargé sur la rive où deux (2) camionnettes attendaient.

Alors que la police s’approchait des lieux, le bateau a fui la scène avec deux (2) occupants à son bord. Les tentatives pour arrêter l’embarcation en fuite ont été vaines. Les officiers ont repéré et arrêté deux hommes sur la rive. À la suite de l’enquête, Blaze WHITE et Tylor ARMSTRONG, deux individus de 18 ans, de Hogansburg, dans l’État de New York, ont été accusés de possession de tabac non estampillé en vertu de la Loi de 2001 sur l’accise. Outre les 516 kg de tabac de contrebande finement haché, la police a saisi deux (2) camionnettes, un GMC Canyon 2007 et un GMC Sierra 2017, ainsi que cinq (5) appareils électroniques. S’ils sont jugés coupables, les

deux accusés devront faire face à une amende minimum de 139 401 dollars et/ou d’une peine d’emprisonnement.

Les accusés ont été libérés sur engagement et comparaîtront devant la Cour provinciale de Cornwall le 24 octobre 2017. « Une fois encore, l’aide du public nous a permis de mettre un terme à une activité criminelle organisée dans notre région », a déclaré le sergent Garry Belair, sous-officier responsable des Opérations intérimaire du GTRC. « Suite à notre opération intensifiée de prévention du mois de juin, les membres de la communauté comprennent mieux l’importance de signaler les activités suspectes. AKWESASNE - Shawn Dulude was sworn in as the new chief od the Akwesasne Mohawk Police (AMP) on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Dulude is taking over from acting chief Lee-ann O’brien and will officially begin his duties on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

“I’m really honored to have been chosen as your new chief of police and I will not disappoint anyone in this room or the community especially,” said Dulude.
